Solve : Sound problem help =/?

Answer»

So im using firefox right?
Everytime i change my speaker into Headset, it won't work. I have to reopen the browser to do it. (Same as games too)
It's SOMETHING every time i change headset to speaker.

Anyone know why? This is likely because your SOND card sees the rear speaker panel and the front panel as two INDEPENDANT lines
When you switch from one to the other, with the program open, the ound card redirects the audio but the program is still attempting to send to the old output. the easiest was to AVOID this? Use the headphone JACK on the speakers themselves; or buy a 3.5mm male to female extension cable leading to your desk. That way you can plug in your headphones into the same port without the need to reconfigure it.

Otherwise post up soundcard details and we can try to find a software option that works.

Solve : cpu: whats your favorite??

Answer»

what cpu do you prefer?

Also if there are any good cpu companies thet i missed or DONT know lett me know.Of course there are a few other companies out there that manufacture CPUs

Motorola for one, I believe the PS3 houses a Motorola CPU
VIA also produces very energy efficient; but slow chips.

There are a few others but I doubt anyone on the forums uses any of them.
I prefer Fission Chips.MOS technology 6502.Quote from: reddevilggg on July 18, 2011, 03:58:05 AM

Its a pity VIA is in the shadow of AMD and Intel. That said, I'm thinking of building a HTPC with this board.Quote from: Transfusion on July 18, 2011, 06:42:10 AM
Its a pity VIA is in the shadow of AMD and Intel.

They are in the shadow of AMD and Intel because their offerings have always been sub-par even in the REALM of value machines.

AMD first made inroads into Intel's market mostly because of the K6, which was really an improvement, not on the K5, but NexGen's Nx586.

In order to use a Pentium II chip, users would have to upgrade their entire motherboard. The K6 was physically installable into a K5 board, so users could get performance somewhere between a Pentium I and a Pentium II at a fraction of the cost. the K6 also boasted faster Integer operations than the Pentium.

VIA's first offering- the Cyrix- was inferior to both the Pentium as well as The AMD lines at the time, And there is, quite literally, no reason to ever have a machine that uses a VIA processor in a DESKTOP PC. None of it's later and current offerings are value-equal to similar offerings by Intel and AMD. VIA Motherboards, however, are usually quite capable. The fact that the only way VIA can get it's CPUs into consumer hands seems to be to pair their boards with the CPU is telling in that regard.

Like Motorola, ARM processors, and so forth, VIA would be best to concentrate on embedded APPLICATIONS for their processors, rather than the desktop, especially with the boom in mobile devices, which can be in fact more lucrative a market than desktops and laptops anyway.
ha ha ha, by adding Fission Chips to the poll, you've turned it from a 'personal preferance' poll into something more farcical.

Solve : RAM Compatibilty??

Answer»

Hi guys,

I have 2 old computers, one is from 1999 and the other is from late 2000.

I want to use some of the RAM from the yr 2000 PC in my 1999 one. My question is will the RAM be compatible? The RAM I want to put in is a 128 MB stick of PC-133. But I do not know what KIND of this PC takes.

Can you guys help? You have provided no useful information.
In any event, download and install this and it will tell you what memory you have now.Attached is the info CPU-Z gave me.

Sorry, I can give you more info, just tell me what you need.

[attachment deleted by admin]Which machine are you displaying? You need one for each, since you want to move RAM from one to the other. Label them so you tell which is which. Also click on SPD TAB and it will show each RAM slot in the pull-down box and the details of the RAM module. This may not be available or accurate in older computers. That was for the machine I want to put the RAM into. The computer I'm taking RAM from is not set up right now but I know the RAM is PC-133.

And the SPD tab did not give me any info.SPD was not STANDARDIZED on all computers until later.

If the modules have the same number of contacts and the NOTCH is in the same location, all are the same. PC66, PC100, PC133 are all the same (except for speed) and are usually backward compatible, i.e. you can use a PC133 in a PC100 or 66. If the PC133 fits into the slot you can do no damage by trying it.

Solve : Problems installing sata hdd on ide system.?

Answer»

I recently purchased a new Samsung 1tb hdd. It's a sata drive but the system I am installing it in uses IDE. I bought the appropriate converter, but everytime I attempt a boot up the machine it takes me to the screen that shows the emachine logo and the options "BOOT MENU " and "BIOS SETTINGS ". If i try to enter either screens it just freezes and does nothing. Iv'e even tried repeatedly hitting an option directly after pressing the on button but still nothing. If I unplug the drive it will automatically boot from the cd drive. What gives? The system itself is an emachines w3052 and originally had windows XP home edition. I am trying to install Ubuntu onto the drive.Quote from: revron on September 30, 2009, 05:12:17 PM

I recently purchased a new Samsung 1tb hdd. It's a sata drive but the system I am installing it in uses IDE. I bought the appropriate converter...
Please provide details on the converter and how it is connected. Here is the url to the adapter I purchased.

Some are SATA to IDE and some are IDE to SATA. Others are bi-directional.

Can't you get an IDE drive instead?I suppose I COULD but I have been unable to LOCATE an IDE drive this large. I suppose I could always get a sata card and install it with that while using a small IDE drive to store the os. Is this advisable? The largest IDE I have found is 500GB. If you really need a 1TB drive and it's for data storage, then what you suggest is feasible. OR get a bootable PCI-SATA controller card.

I like the 2 drive plan better, keeping OS separate from data is adviseable.

Solve : 3rd hard drive or replace hd?

Answer»

and goes on to say this.. which is the major debate about hot swapping HD's..

Quote

System/Operational designThere are two slightly differing meanings of the term hot swapping. It may refer only to the ability to add or remove hardware without powering down the system, while the system software may have to be notified by the user of the event in order to cope with it. Examples include RS-232 and lower-end SCSI devices. This is sometimes called cold plugging. However, if the system can detect and respond to addition or removal of hardware, it is referred to as true hot plugging. Examples include USB, FireWire and higher-end SCSI devices.

Some implementations require a component shutdown procedure prior to removal. This simplifies the design, but such devices are not robust in the case of component failure. If a component is removed while it is being used, the operations to that device fail and the user is responsible for RETRYING if necessary, although this is not usually considered to be a problem.

More complex implementations may recommend but do not require that the component be shut down, with sufficient redundancy in the system to allow operation to continue if a component is removed without being shut down. In these systems hot swap is normally used for regular maintenance to the computer, or to replace a broken component.

I'll stick by my statements...The term hot swapable goes BACK several years and was originally designed for severs used in RAID configurations with both the drive and chassis specifically designed so that a drive could be CHANGED with no loss of data. These are commercial units with commercial prices. Finally some semblance of reason...Somebody ought to correct the article than, for some reason they have this silly idea that USB was designed for hot swapping. Somebody ought to correct the USB specifications which make several references to that intended functionality.

Or we can all put the blinders on and pretend that it's not hot-SWAPPABLE to make Patio feel better.Well let him keep powering down his system to plug in a Hard drive, mouse, keyboard, phone, camera, etc, etc, etc, etc, not my problem... how ever i stick to my statement: hotspawable simply in all lamens TERMS means that you can plug and unplug an item into a system that is powered on. Quote from: rthompson80819 on July 17, 2011, 02:56:50 PM

Terms aren't "designed" and how a term was originally used has absolutely no bearing on what it means now. Also, the term in the context of RAID meant you could replace the drive while the system was on, and the array was in use. Warm swap meant you had to stop the computer from using the drive (by dismounting the RAID array) Cold swap meant you could power down, replace, power up, and the RAID array would work just fine with the new drive.

Going by that terminology, a USB drive would be a Warm swappable device. So would a eSATA drive, which has the exact same issues with requiring the "safely remove" option, the only difference is that all eSATA drives are going to be recognized as fixed disks, and so they won't have any write-caching by default, but this is also the case for removable fixed Hard disks that connect via USB, so whatever term applies to one applies to the other.

Telcon switches in particular have had hot swappable CPU boards, etc for many years as do many commercial servers. They now call them "blade servers" when used for internet applications. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_server

What os is it. : win xp,vista, win 7Look in BIOS, F10 at Dell splash screen.Look for keyboard FUNCTION key(Fn) and the monitor symbol or icon(F4,F7...) on to enable external monitor. Here is an alternative solution that WILL void your warranty-Disconnect the internal monitor cable inside your laptop. The display will DEFAULT to the external VGA connector.

Solve : Can virus attacks computers by sharing a printer??

Answer»

Can virus attacks computers by sharing a PRINTER?
I run a small business and had 2 computers in my office. I used one computer to do all the office work like keeping record & data, letters etc and the other which is connected to internet for email, research, etc. Both computers are sharing same printer. If the computer that connected to internet get attacked by a virus, does my other computer will be attacked too?
Best protection is a good firewall between your systems and internet and daily virus update definitions and scans from a good antivirus, as well as daily or weekly data backups depending on how critical your data is to replace if wiped out. Most businesses go with daily backups minimum as well as shadow copying with MS Server and use of RAID 5 etc setups for protection against total data loss via infection or hardware damage and/or failure.

Is this printer a shared USB connected printer or a stand alone Network Printer in which the systems are both connecting to it as its own identity? Shares and Pass thru authentication are your biggest concerns. Shares can allow for one system to spread the problem to the next. Pass Thru authentication can be a problem if the same user/password is VALID on both systems, so as to where the infected system could call out to the next system and use same credentials to infect the next system.

It is VERY rare for a virus to spread via shared printer, but its not impossible. The most common points of entry are removable portable drives that connect between systems inside and outside of a business that can get infected and spread virus's, as well as e-mail attachments etc. Most creators of virus's go for the easier attacks like removable portable drives and e-mail attachments tying to get someone to unzip and execute or execute the attachment and then initiate the attack. They generally want it to spread more rampant and a shared printer if attacked in this method would probably stay within the systems of the shared network without looking for alternate paths of attack to worm out.Quote

It is VERY rare for a virus to spread via shared printer, but its not impossible.
Yes, and it is more that just possible. It is doable if there is a great motivation. Otherwise, it is so much easier to make profit doing other kinds of malicious things. Of which, I know very little.

Look here, Even if half of what hes says is true, it still presents t cause for paranoia.

Solve : 3 computer monitors go straight into standby at one house but not another?

Answer»

I am really needing suggestions about my brother-in-law's computer. He had gotten a really nasty virus and asked me to fix his computer. He brought it to my house and we decided to just wipe it out and start with a fresh install of windows7. He had both his tower and monitor at my house, but I had to use my own mouse and keyboard. Everything was working fine when he left here with it. When He got home he calls to tell me that he can't get his computer to turn on, so I drive over there and determine his computer is turning on but his monitor power light is going green for only a moment before going into standby. We tried changing monitors out with two other monitors all with the same results. So I took his computer back to my house with the same original monitor, plug it all in and it all turns right back on as if nothing had ever happened. It all worked just fine. He PICKED it back up today and took it back home, plugs it in and still has the same problem. I am at a loss, it worked fine at my house not once but twice. At his house he has tried 3 different monitors all with the same problem. It never shows anything at all on the screen at his house just a black screen, but the power light goes green for mere seconds then clicks and goes yellow. Now he has the idea that I did something wrong to it, even though he saw for himself it works fine both times at my house. The only thing I could think was maybe there is an electrical problem at his house not pushing enough power to it. I mean why else would it work here and not there? Any suggestions would be so very appreciated. Quote from: amikkwe on July 18, 2011, 08:49:40 PM

He had both his tower and monitor at my house, but I had to use my own mouse and keyboard.

What's the reason you had to use your mouse and keyboard?

Are you using your mouse and keyboard at your house, and then using his mouse and keyboard at his house every time?

If so maybe something is wrong with his mouse and/or keyboard.Based on your post it could be on the power output. Have you tried different wall outlets in their house?

When He first brought the computer to my house he forgot to bring over his keyboard and mouse. The second time it was at my house I had his keyboard but not his mouse, but he uses a wireless mouse and the wireless receiver was plugged in the whole time and shows that the driver installed fine. Now he claims that his computer was fine at his house before the virus, and even with the virus it was still turning on o.k. However I know everything worked fine both times at my house, it left here working in perfect order. and I noticed his house the lights are always flickering and he has two power strips plugged into every outlet of the house all loaded down with multiple electrical items. He says he has plugged straight into the wall outlet too though. But his house is a VERY old house. Maybe with the old wiring and so many THINGS plugged in throughout the house is just too much. I really don't know. I am lost, but I feel good about the work I did on that computer.Quote from: jason2074 on July 19, 2011, 12:15:41 AM

That is what I feel, the problem is he TELLS me that before the virus and bringing it to my house it would power up fine. I don't know what could have changed since then with his power however I am inclined to believe it's his house since it all works here ok. I tried to tell him to take it to yet another person's house and hook it up just so he will see it's not the computer but something to do with his house. Just thought if I posted here someone else may have encountered something similar and have an idea I may not thought of.

Solve : All kinds of booting problems.?

Answer»

The problems are PILING up and driving me insane. Please help.

When I try to start up my computer, it does one of SEVERAL things. 1) it doesn't beep at all and therefore needs several hard reboots before it gets to my screen. 2) Blue screen of death. 3) Freezes once in windows and needs to be hard booted to start again.

By the way, I can only load into my OS through the disk as apparently I am missing my boot manager. I have tried to reinstall the OS and have tried repairing it but without the disk in my drive I cant get into windows 7.

I have attached my DxDiag if that helps.

Thanks in advance.

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? The newest hardware would be a wireless-N usb 2.0 adapter but I have been using it for 8 months with no problems until now. I took it out and restarted computer without disk and still couldn't get PAST "no boot manager screen" without the start up disk.
I run virus protection regularly and have found nothing.
I suppose it could be a boot up virus but not sure how to find out besides running a virus scan which finds nothing.Boot to the W7 dvd and try startup repair OPTIONS.

Solve : the right processor?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I'me a comp science eng student(first year), and a CASUAL gamer.I'm going to buy a laptop and these are the points i needed clarification on-
1. T6500 vs P8600 vs P8700-which one would be the BEST processor ?
2. 3 Gb or 4 Gb-which one would be better for the 32 bit vista ?
3. Is the 64 bit vista recommended (wrt software compat,e.t.c)and if so,what ram should i have? I would go with the Intel P8700 processor.

Since a 32 bit OS can only address 4 GB of memory I would do 3 GB because the video card will most likely have it's own memory. If you go over 4 GB of memory, Windows will only address 4 GB.

A 64 bit OS will be able to address 128 GB of RAM.a 32 bit os cannot use 4gb usually. Usually its 3.25, but it can vary. Quote from: pctech on September 29, 2009, 03:22:02 PM

Being able to use 4gb+ RAM is certainly an advantage with an X64 OS, but my Vista X64 system would likely have a heart attack with 128 GB. Thanks a lot guys!Quote from: danielRay on September 30, 2009, 05:25:54 AM

Right, I get 3.5 for my tops on a 32 bit OS.um... a 64-bit OS can address 2^64 bytes of information... that's 18,446,744,073,709,551,616, 16 Exabytes.

However most 64-bit Operating systems limit this:

Windows XP x64 Edition can use up to and including 128GB of RAM.

Windows Vista depends on the edition:
Vista Home Basic x64 can use 8GB, Vista Home Premium x64 can use 16GB, and
Vista Business x64 and Ultimate x64 can use 128+ GB. (although it can be made to use more then 128GB that configuration is not supported by MS) (although you'd be hard pressed to find a motherboard that supports it, anyway....)

Windows 7 64-bit, varies much like Vista.
Home Basic: 8 GB
Home Premium: 16 GB
Professional,Ultimate, and Enterprise: 192 GB

Of course for the high-end these aren't really "limits" that will be hit any time SOON, and right now are merely the MAXIMUM AMOUNT of supported RAM (the lower editions are a software limitation purposely enforced by the OS).

BC_Programmer,
Question of the day!
Which recent Windows 32 bit OS can handle and make available
mover than 4GB of memory. And what CPU is used?
Server 2003 I believe, with a processor supporting PAE.

I think.You got it.

Solve : Motherboard Power switch?

I just got a new case and i have wires that are Power Led,Reset switch, HDD Led, Power switch. I cant find the CONNECTORS anywhere on the motherboard.

Specs that might be usefull:
Case: Haf-X
Motherboard:N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX
Memory: 6gigs
This is a motherboard out of an HP Pavilion. Its case uses a block type connector, not separate connectors. Do you still have the HP ORIGINAL case?

yes i still have the hp case.Quote from: seniture on July 19, 2011, 12:42:17 PM

yes i still have the hp case.

Therefore study the wires from the block connector to the HP Case front PANEL. You will probably need to cut the cable and join the right wires to the new case front panel wires, taking great care to observe correct polarity (or the LEDS will not light). If your electrical knowledge is not enough to do this task correctly, then maybe you should ask yourself if you really need a new case for a HP-brand motherboard.

i really dont no which thing it connects to tho :/Quote from: seniture on July 19, 2011, 12:57:10 PM
i really dont no which thing it connects to tho :/

If you removed the board from the HP case don't you remember what you did? Look at the connector from the HP front panel and look at the motherboard and you will see where it goes.

Why are you doing this? You just want a different case?

i got it to work only the switch tho and no display but im doing this because my pc is getting old and very much overheating i got the case yesterday and my new video card, ram, and cpu cooler are coming tommorow
Not sure what that response means...but Best of Luck...

Solve : Motherboard dying??

You know, I've got to say I'm very very impressed with the free live phone support I received from Kaspersky about reactivating my Kaspersky Internet Security. I had misplaced my activation code and they were kind enough to dig it up and email it BACK to me within a short time of calling them.

Don't know if I'll get around to formatting tonight, I'm a bit tired. I'll post back with a status update once I do so.Always nice to learn about a good customer service experience. I haven't forgotten about this, backup my data is going quite slow though. Like I said, the system is acting slow in general, even copying. Still has at least 2 hours left (so it says anyway).

Everything is hooked back up now and there don't seem to be anymore drive dropping. I had two more modular connection on the power supply, so I pulled out some more of the cables I didn't use before and seperated power cables so the IDE drive is on one power cable, the CD drive is on one, SATA drive has its own, and the case fans and CPU cooler are on one. IDE drive and DVD drive are still sharing the same IDE cable. Ordered some SATA DVD drives from the distributor this morning which should arrive tomorrow morning. Think I might swipe one of those and stick it in my machine and take this IDE DVD drive out and just PUT it in another junk system or external enclosure.Have you ruled out just doing a Repair Install and re-installing the Drivers ? ?

Have you ruled out just doing a Repair Install and re-installing the Drivers ? ?

Course nuttin better than a clean install every now and then...

I thought about doing that then just decided to do a complete wipe of the C: and D: drives. D: was my old backup partition for my laptop, but that's getting moved to the E: drive (large partition on the SATA) which I use to store all of my media files and other downloads. Given the age of the IDE drive, I just feel better if the backup is on the newer SATA...... now watch my SATA drive crash this weekend!

Anyway, once everything is backup up from those drives, I'll probably just remove both partitions and make it one whole partition for Windows and programs to be installed on.

The second partition on the SATA drive is for games, mostly World of Warcraft. Considering the last time I installed Warcraft and Burning Crusade and applied all the patches took 4 hours, I just keep the same installation and even copy it to my other computers when needs be. WoW doesn't require its registry entries to work properly and even recreates them if they're not there during certain patches.

Anyway, almost finished moving everything to the SATA drive now. It's just taking so long because I'm actually going through all my folders and deleting stuff I don't need anymore. Been meaning to do that for a long time, figure now is as good a time as any.Alright, speed bump.

Everything is backed up and ready to go. The old IDE DVD has been removed and a SATA DVD drive has been put in. The IDE drive is now on its own. Everything is connected again as it should be: all fans, CPU cooler, drives.

Popped in the Windows CD and booted from it. It goes to "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration..." for about 5 seconds, then abruptly rebooted.

The second, third, and fourth time, I got the message "inf file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing (status 4096)" right after it said it was inspecting the computer's hardware.

Read this might be because of a dirty or SCRATCHED CD. The CD looked flawless and I gave it a cleaning even though it looked spotless. Fifth time, setup started...

Anyway, let's see how this goes for the rest of the installation. It's just repartitioned and is formatting the drive now.Best of Luck as this has been a long journey...Well, aside from that little hiccup, everything seems to be going smooth. I've got Windows reinstalled now and I'm updating Kaspersky and downloading Firefox. Speed seems to have returned to normal and none of the drives or anything seem to be dropping out.

Other than getting a SATA DVD put in, I've MADE a few changes in cabling and added a few more cables to the power supply so each cable is shared less. The SATA hard drive and DVD share a cable (as the power supply only came with one SATA power cable with 2 ends on it). The IDE drive is on it's own power cable and IDE cable. The side, front, and rear case fans and the CPU cooler share a cable, and the video card is still on it's own cable.

Like I said, so far so good... although I still haven't isolated exactly what the issue was before. Not sure if it was the power supply or the Windows installation going out, but it's running fast and strong without issues for half an hour now, which is more than it was doing before. Anyway, thanks for all the help. I'll post back if it starts acting up again.Good News indeed...
Now do an image before anything else...verify it and burn it to DVD.

Solve : Video card instalation problem?

Answer»

Today in the mail I got my new atx 500watt powe supply and radeon sapphire 5830 graphics card. I got the power supply working and went on to install the graphics card. It went in a little tight but was okay. I turned on the computer and windows recognized the new HARDWARE. Then I pressed the wrong option and tried to get out by turning off the computer. Wrong MOVE I guess. I was at the REGULAR screen of windows and using a graphics device from my motherboard possibly. I tried putting in the cd but it seems my cd rom drive is gone now! I am clueless on what to do and i am very frustrated.I hope one of you guys can HELP me.If your motherboard has integrated video, remove the video card and get the system to boot and run without this graphics card. Then shutdown correctly when this is achieved, and then install video card, and then boot system up and chose correct OPTIONS for installation and then you should be all set with a reinitialized graphics card installation vs your current problem.

I agree with Patio. It's a very good starting place to learn hardware.

Alan <>< I also recommend CompTIA as a starting place. Working on mine as we speak!

ProProfs.com has a great forum and learning tools to help you out, although they haven't finished updating their site for the latest version of the test. You really don't want to go into repairing computers. There is a deal of satisfaction in that field, but not much money.

I would encourage you to take some engineering COURSES and go from there.

Solve : motherboard with no vga port.?

when i get a motherboard it has no vga PORT on it. Can i use a graphics card in the pci exressx16 slot in a motherborad without a vga port to install an os? Or if there is an eaiser way let me knowNot sure what your asking here.... No VGA port? So you have no way of viewing what is happening? Unless you use HDMI... I'm lost... you cannot interact with the computer without a visual DISPLAY. So without a display 'No' you cannot install an OS as you cannot interact with the computer if you have no idea what it's asking. if i have a motherboard with no stock/company vga output port. If i plug a graphics card into one of the pci slots in will it allow me to SEE the screen.Quote from: Dustin13838 on July 19, 2011, 03:10:39 PM

Correct. So the best way is to put a video card on your PCI slot. MAJORITY of video cars have VGA port. Good luck!

Solve : BIOS no longer detects either CD or DVD burner.?

Answer»

Hello, I have an ASUS P5K-V mainboard with an AMI BIOS running WinXP Pro with SP3. Everything was working fine until the other day when I OPENED it up and blew out all the dust. After I was done I noticed that I had FORGOTTEN to plug the SATA DVD burner back in, which I had unplugged for easier access to one of the fans I was cleaning. So I opened it back up and plugged it back in. After booting back up I put a blank DVD in the burner, which seemed okay because it had power but UPON checking in "my computer" I noticed it was not being detected. And to MAKE matters worse, now my IDE CD burner was no longer there either! And it was working fine before and I didnt even touch it when I plugged the DVD burner back in. So I went into my BIOS and tried to have it auto detect it, but it wont. And I noticed that during boot process when the messages flash across black screens before windows loads, there was something strange. It was under the usual Maxtor HDD0 list; I think it was referring to my cdrom, but it read ODD0: !!OAY some weird characters and C with a vertical double pointed arrow X230E and what looks like a club from a suit of cards. I dont remember seeing this before. Does anyone KNOW what I can do to make my BIOS recognize these drives again?
Thank you,
LindaYou blew some dust inside the SATA receptacle on the motherboard. But I never unplugged anything from the motherboard, just from the burner itself. After I nplugged it back in, I got power to it, but it isnt recognized in the bios any more, and after plugging it back in my other IDE burner doesnt show up either! And what are those strange characters and symbols that show up during boot screens? I had a SATA hard drive do something similar. It's not making a good connection at the drive. Cut a little paper tab (a cut up plastic Post-It page marker works perfectly) to tighten up the connection between the gold tabs.
Thanks for the good tip that I will not forget, but unfortunately that doesnt seem to be the problem here. However, after doing your suggestion the other IDE CD burner has started working again and the BIOS summary is legible and no longer shows those strange characters. And I didnt touch this IDE drive, only the SATA one, which still isnt recognized. Do you think it could be my motherboard? Maybe I will remove the SATA plug from its current spot #3 and move it to #4 on the board to see if that makes any difference.Well it looks like it is my board, cause I switched the SATA plug to the #4 spot and it works just fine. I guess I better start looking for another board.Try blowing out the old port and plugging it back it. Bet it will work again.

How is it possible that my PC time changed slowly, always keep on changing every time .
My Latest situation is from sunday onwards , my PC didn't boot at al even when i press the CPU power switch button in the morning, then no boot up..
By the previous day i switched the CPU power switch ON in the morning, then in the evening at 5:30 only, my PC booted up and worked normally till my night sleep before go to bed. Then on next day[sunday], i cleaned my PC to remove some dust with soft brush, not by disconnecting all the power supply, just removed all the connection by the back of the components like monitor wire, mouse, keyboard, ethernet, speaker wire,..and also remove[unplugged] my 2 GB RAM memory card and put it back into same slot, didn't do disconnected Hard disk cable,DVD drive cable, and rest of the wire was connected to motherboard i didn't touched it at all.
Then my PC didn't totally booted up till i waited for the evening and also by night time.
Till so far i didn't touched my CPU because of nervous and if i touch it didn't go wrong by major problem of afraid.
Tell me so far i told my PC condition now, what might be the problem exactly, then what i supposed to do now...

So unless you are registered on Facebook you can't add comments. Some sites and or Newspaper columns requires people to sign in to an existing account before posting any comments. Another thing would also worth trying is to clear your browser cache/cookies. Download CCLEANER for free http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
Install and run the program. Checkmarked all your Browser's Temporary files and Cookies under Windows and Applications Tabs and leave all unchecked.Click Run CLEANER button while your browsers are not active or being used. Solve : Host Burn-In mode?

Answer»

I've got a Pent. 4 641 (SL9KF) Motherboard Intel D945GCCRG1

My bios allows "Host Burn in mode" but when I set it to +4% and boot the computer, CPU-Z shows that FSB speed and Processor Speed at their regular speeds...no increase

Could this be because Intel locked the cpu and/or FSB from being overclocked? Why would you want to overclock an older system?

Most machines become accustomed to the power accorded them over time, overclocking an older machine can kill it really fast. It's not that old of a machine. I got it in the middle of 2007..if you use the AGP/PCI Burn-in Mode BIOS feature to overclock the AGP and PCI bus, Intel automatically disables this BIOS feature and you won't be able to overclock the processor and memory modules.QUOTE from: EEVIAC on November 10, 2009, 12:00:11 AM

Well, thx for the pointer...didn't realize my system is relatively old

I'm still curious as to why no speed increases are apparent Because the hardware is not capable of it without failing entirely.Quote from: Quantos on November 09, 2009, 11:58:18 PM

I tend to agree.

I was recently able to overclock my old 350Mhz K6-2 to 400Mhz using the jumpers, and it had been running at 350Mhz for nearly 9 years. I did however have heat dissipation problems even with the new HEATSINK, and resulting errors.

I then replaced the CPU with a 500Mhz model

No, actually I've seen it.They don't get used to being overclocked... that's just silly.

By the same token could one say that running a 100 watt light-bulb at 60 watts will eventually make the bulb unable to output 100 watts?

Additionally why stop at while power is applied, heck, if you leave a CPU untouched for years should it not get used to having no power running through it? what metric is used to determine "when" the CHIPS "power memory" is being affected?

I would suggest MSI-a cheap TIER 1 mobo manufacturer.
Intel is overpriced. AMD's Phenom dual core is the best bang for the buck-the corresponding motherboards are also cheaper.

MSI motherboard range that i use for my everyday computing: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/#/?sk=Socket%20AM3 the AMD 760 chipset. you might need the AMD 880 chipset.

The RAM is good-Corsair DDR3 RAM, i see. I personally am happy with 2 GB RAM -I can run san andreas perfectly.

Solve : Computer Overheating, or possibly another problem? Help?

Answer»

Hello, and thank you for reading my dilemma..

Firstly, I'll tell you my problem, then tell you about my COMPUTER. I'm on a different computer telling you my problem. It occured last night while I was browsing the web. I got the blue screen, and it said it was checking disk. It restarted, but when it restarted, it never rebooted. I just heard 2 beeps. These 2 beeps would continue every 5 seconds or so. So I'd turn it off, then try again 10 minutes later. This time, I just hear the 2 beeps.

The beeps is 1 short beep, then 1 long beep. 5 seconds later, same beeps.

Then, I waited an hour, and it'd start up, but shortly after I arrive at the Windows area, the monitor would either go black, and the computer would start the 2 beeps again. Or (another time I'd start it) the monitor would go black, and I couldn't do anything except unplug it.

I did some reading on here, and it may be an overheating issue, but also read that it could be a heatsink disconnection, or possibly a virus. So I just need some confirmation.

Now, here's my computer information...

I believe this is my motherboard coming from looking up my computer on the HP website

truenorth, my desktop computer is the "master" (computer hard wired to the router) and my laptop "slave" feeds through the router by, I think the term is, WI-FI?
Again, the terms master and slave have no relevance here. Just because your desktop is connected to the router by cable does not make it "master" nor does your laptop become "slave" by virtue of a wireless connection to the router.

Furthermore, you're referring to truenorth's comment but you aren't even using the terms master and slave in the same sense as him. He was referring to printers but you're talking about the computers themselves, not the printers.

"master" and "slave" usually refers to the common scenario of two drives (hard or optical) connected to the same data cable which connects the drives to the motherboard. The terms simply are not generally used terminology in connection with printers or cable vs. wireless connection to a router. There is no "master" and "slave" in this configuration. Both are connected to the router and it makes no difference if one is wired and the other is wireless (Wi-Fi).

In your configuration, in order to print from the notebook computer to the USB printer which is connect to the desktop computer, the desktop computer must be on. You could convert the USB printer to ethernet and then connect it to the router, so the desktop computer doesn't have to be on.

If you really must have another firewall besides the one built-in to WinXP, they plenty of free ones.Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 01, 2009, 11:45:40 AM

Ha. truenorth, your right. My eyes are glazed over. I think I thanked everyone. Hope I did.

Why buy, when there are good free ones?

Anti-Virus
Avast and AVG both have freeware.

Firewalls
Many are freeware, or just use the WinXP firewall. What Next, Fantastic that you have made progress and can now use your printer as shared. On the "free" anti virus. I have used both the suggestions of Comp_Comm and offer a comment and another alternative. Comment: I find AVG has gotten too bloated. Alternative (free) is "Avira" which i use on a couple of my computers and find it to be very efficient compared to the 2 others. For your information and guidance. On the central concept i do agree that you don't need to "buy". In FACT the 2 most popular commercial ones "Norton" and "McAfee " are know to have a lot of downside potential for computer issues. truenorth

Solve : looking for some ideas to set up a surveillance system for a clothes shop?

Answer»

Hi all,

I was doing a part-time job at a clothes SHOP which can not access the Internet.
Recently, someone broke in the shop and stole some expensive jeans.
The shop MANAGER is looking for some hardware to set up a surveillance system, and
she wants the hardware to CAPTURE continuous videos to be accessed by her at home.
But the problem is that the shop does not have any equipment necessary to access the Internet.

Are there any hardware that can help her solve the problem?

Thank you.

KittyWithout knowing more of what you need, here is a low end solution.
You buy a number of small, battery powered MOTION sensitive spy cameras. The look like ornaments or something common.

When thee is any motion in the field of view, then start to record. They can record up to an hour of low end video onto a SD chip. Later, you can download the video via USB and look at the footage with any media player. It is common AVI format. With sound.

The go for about $150 a pop. Which is reasonable, considering that they are small, automatic self-contained units for a very specific use.

And no, I am not in the spy camera business, but I happen to have a some I got for my own use. Works find. The thing is, you have to manually connect it to your PC to see what you got. A vat playing in the store can start the recording. Some kind of intrusion detector would be helpful.

But setting them up for Internet upload would be a real chore.
This link is NOT a recommendation. Just for reference.
http://www.homespy.com/
They have stuff you might want, buts looks pricy to me. Not without an Internet connection...No.
Unless she wants to wait til the next day when it's too late...Since you didn't mention it, I'd get a burglar ALARM before I would worry about a surveillance system.

Tiger direct has a variety of surveillance systems.

2. Then I was told to replace the hard drive so I did and it didn't fix it.
3. I also went and took it all apart and blew it all out.
4. Their is no change in this computer. Does anyone have an idea as what could be done to fix this future paperweight?
1. Probably correct, but it's no guarantee.
2. Did you install Windows on the new hard drive? Does the BIOS recognize the the existence of the hard drive, the old one or the new one.
3. Can't hurt.
4. Are there any "beep codes" when you turn it on?

"The screen started to smear then froze up then went black. Then I shut it down and restarted it and all I got was the IBM logo."
This DESCRIPTION is some kind of clue which eludes me. It does seem like something overheated and then blew out, which brings us back to the motherboard.
Hello Again: Yes sir I already went through the manual but it don't help to repair the problem. #1 I KNOW it's no guarantee but that is why I ask you. #2 I started to install windows and got about a third of it when it froze up again and started over but all I got was the logo and it went black. #3 It seamed to help a little #4 Their are NO "beep codes" just the logo when it get warmed up and yes the fan is running.

Solve : Tosihba Laptop, I/O Error at startup??

Answer»

I have a Toshiba laptop with windows Vista on it. When I try to start the computer, it'll give me the option to either, "Start windows normally," or "Launch Startup Repair (Recommended)."

When I choose "Launch Startup Repair," it says, "Windows has encountered a problem COMMUNICATION with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removeable device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by family hardware such aas a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removeable removable STROAGE is properly connected and then restart your computer."

STATUS: 0xc00000e9 INFO: An unexpected I/O error has occured.

When I choose "Start Windows Normally," it takes awhile to load, but eventually says, "Windows failed to start. A recent harward or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1) Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2) Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3) Click "Repair your computer." File: \windows\system32\config\system."

STATUS: 0xc00000e9 INFO: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.

The thing is, nothing happened to the computer. I've only had it for two months (no warranty, though) and nothing was wrong with it whatsoever. I've never had any problems at all. All I did was shut it off (properly) then went to use it again awhile later and it's doing this. It's never been dropped or banged or anything. There's no discs in the drive and nothing is connected to it.

What could be wrong with it and what could be done? Thanks for any and all answers you can give.

Where did you buy it?Test the memory. Go to either www.memtest86.com or www.memtest.org and download the "free" memory diagnostic software. PICK the appropriate download for a bootable CD, floppy, or USB drive.

You need to ensure the resultant CD, floppy, or USB media is bootable.

Boot to the memory diagnostics and let it run for a couple of hours or OVERNIGHT. It should run forever unless you stop it (ESC key?). You shouldn't have any errors. If you do, we'll need to figure out what it means.

Use the AC power adaptor instead of battery power to run the tests. No use running the battery down or having it quit on you half-way through the tests. It's not a memory problem. The registry is corrupt. Continue to try to do the repair from the Vista CD, but if you cannot you may have to do a format and new install (sorry). It's ALSO possible your HD is on the way out, which would potentially cause registry corruption depending on where the bad sectors are. Drives are not expensive, so if you do have to do the format and clean Vista installation I'd recommend first installing a new hd.1. Test the Memory. If you load the "system" registry file into bad memory, it will be "corrupt".

No, I'm not sure what the problem is; but you've got to start somewhere. Test the memory, then the hard drive to eliminate them as the source of the problem. These tests will also exercise your CPU and motherboard to some extent.

2. Do you have a Vista Installation CD/DVD?

Sounds like you're trying to work from software pre-installed on the hard drive. Does that Toshiba laptop have a recovery/restore partition you can reinstall the operating system from?

Solve : Possible power supply problem?

Answer»

A friend has a brand new computer which at times reboots over and over again for no apparent reason, often before even starting Windows) When we brought it back to the store, they saw no such phenomenon. Could it be the power supply? (Could it be that the voltage in my friend's house is too low?) I have a perfectly 450-watt good spare power supply removed from a Pentium 4 computer. Is it suitable for the new computer? (If so, I can just replace the power supply and not argue with the store.)

Details:
OS: Windows XP Pro SP3
MB: G-31/1600 MHz/VGA
CPU: Intel Core E5300/2.6 GHz
HD: 320 GB SATA IIFirst let's make sure it's a hardware problem. Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and uncheck "automatically restart". If the computer continues to reboot it's probably hardware related, otherwise the next time there's a problem you'll get a blue screen error message instead of a reboot. Post that entire message here.I'm sorry that it took so long for me to reply, but the other party was not immediately available.

First, when I asked her to uncheck "automatically restart," the computer notified her that the setting for the virtual memory was too low and did not accept the automatic restart change. I had her change the virtual memory settings and the automatic restart was then accepted.

Thereafter, the computer functioned normally for 2 hours and then turned itself off. This is in contrast to the previous condition, where the computer rebooted.

Now when she starts the computer, it turns itself off almost immediately.

On the basis of the new information what do you think the problem is?

Well it's certainly a hardware problem. And the change she made to "automatically restart" is not the cause of the computer shutting off - it's a coincidence but unrelated. It works at the store but not his/her house..... have you tried it in your house (or some other 3rd party location)? I'm not a hardware guru, but the obvious possibilities (to me, anyway) are any of the following: power supply, ram, as you suggested - something with the power at the house.

But hang around - someone with more hardware expertise is sure to respond.Lowest cost solution...borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnite...
You will know soon enough if that's the issue.
If not we need to look elsewhere.Quote from: patio on OCTOBER 24, 2009, 11:52:28 AM

Sounds like the right one, give it a try. Thanks to all for your SUGGESTIONS. Replacing the power supply did indeed solve the problem.

I must say that I was a bit hesitant, out of fear that if there had been a serious short somewhere, that coud have destroyed my brand-new power supply and still not have solved the problem.

Solve : Processor Problems -> Slower Computer. Help!?

Answer»

I've been having a few problems with my processor for about a year and it STARTED with how it's connected to the motherboard. It started about a year ago when I moved to University, during the move I guess one of the prongs to my processor's heat SINK / fan or whatever it is, (I7 processor) and can no longer lock in properly.

Due to this, in order for the heat sink to do it's job, my box has to rest against he ground horizontally so that the motherboard lies flat on the ground, and the heat sink lies flat above the processor instead of the typical vertical. I've quite often had problems when starting up my computer that it'll tell me my processor is overheating and the computer would shut down.

More recently, every time I go to start up my computer I get the exact same error message for the processor is over heating, but now it doesn't shut down any more and allows me to by-pass the problem and start the computer up. I wonder if my processor is getting worse and worse.

One thing that i've noticed recently is that listening to audio for example will be like "And be a jukebox hero, got stars in his --BZZZZZT-- eyes." The audio doesn't do it alone, the computer also lags at the same time.Heat sink must lock securely or it will overheat. It's like running your car without coolant, it will overheat & die. If you choose to ignore the warning signs, that's your business.I just had a friend log on who was suggesting that my lack of CONSISTENT slowness isn't my processor and it was instead my RAM because it's more of a kinda RANDOM problem that LACKS consistency. I'm going to attempt his fix which is to take them out one by one and restarting every time to see if it's a module problem.Yeah, first stick of ram that I took out seems to have fixed the problem. Thank goodness!Quote

Heat sink must lock securely or it will overheat.

Correct! And there should be a thermal compound/paste between your CPU and heat sink before you lock it.

Solve : Mother board?

I installed a new mother board and now I have no MONITOR. nothing will come up it wont even power up. Is there something I have to do? Is your boad in a case or out of a case?Tell us what you did...step by step.board is in the case. what I did is removed all cables leading to the tower power, mouse etc. Opened the case and wrote down the color coded wire bundles that go to the mother board so I know where they go on the new board. removed the additional cards for the WIFI and the video card and the sound card. removed the memory then removed the motherboard. REPLACED in the reverse ORDER. went to turn on and now I have no monitor. I looked in the back at the ABCD lights. The ABC is yellow and the D is green. According to the Dell book this is a Bios problem. Cant run a disk because I cant see what is going on with a black screen on the monitor. Did you take anti-static precautions while working?

Does the computer get any power?

You power supply may have an on/off SWITCH on the back. Is it turned on?

Have you tried plugging it into a different outlet?

Have you checked your motherboard book to make sure that you have the power connectors in the right place?

Are all of your motherboard standoffs in place?

Check your power switch connector.

Try using a screwdriver to short the power switch pins. If according to dell its a BIOS problem then try flashing your BIOS by looking in the instructions for the motherboard.

Solve : Using disconnected laptop monitor as second monitor?

I was wondering if ANYONE knew of an easy WAY to use a laptop monitor that has been separated from the laptop as an additional monitor on desktop system.

I have two pictures. The connection coming out the the laptop monitor is nothing I have seen before. I am HOPING someones knows of a cable that will allow it to be PLUGGED into a vga port or something along those lines.

No, can't be done.Keep in mind that the screen got it's power from the battery on the main body plus a charger is involved so you need some way to power it. The graphics card was built into the mother board so you need some way to tie it into a graphics card with nonstandard connectors. It would be a real McGiver or Rube Goldburg contraption.

I've got to think somebody out there could do it, but CONSIDERING the time and expense involved it would be easier and cheaper just to but another monitor.Quote from: rthompson80819 on October 01, 2009, 04:37:03 PM

That's what I meant. Most likely it's some form of digital (DVI) interface but even if you could do it, who would want to? If it weren't proprietary, there might be some market for an adapter cable and a stand to mount the screen.

I could do it, but have absolutely no interest in doing it.Thanks for the info guys. I figured it was worth a shot.

Solve : Stereo Equalization Problems?

Answer»

Hi,

I have had a very DURABLE pair of Yamaha YST-MS50 Stereo + Sub Speakers for a few years now. I recently switched them with some cheap Dell 5.1 surround sound speakers to see how it sounded. After deciding the Yamaha speakers were better, I swapped them back. Now the "center" channel is quiet, which is weird seeing as these are stereo speakers. What I mean is that vocals in music are quiet (backing vocals are now about as loud as the original vocals), voices in game cutscenes and movies are quiet, etc. My computer obviously thinks there is still a center channel, even though I have set my sound settings back to stereo. In the levels adjustment panel for my speaker settings, all of the surround sound channels, such as center and RL and RR are still listed, and adjusting the center volume there doesn't have any effect. Any suggestions?

Edit:
I have a Dell XPS-720 with:
Windows 7 Home Premium
Onboard Intel Hi-Fi Integrated Audio
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800 @ 2930 GHz
Nvidia GTX 260

Use the (orange) subwoofer connector to attach a single subwoofer.

NOTE: The LFE (Low Frequency Effects) Audio channel, FOUND in digital surround sound audio schemes, carries only low frequency information of 80 Hz and below. Thank you for your reply Computer_Commando,

The speakers only get proper input from the Line-Out connector (number 10). Before posting this topic I tested every other connector for any form of output and only the Line-Out works. The speakers are hooked up properly and exactly the same way as before I tried the surround speakers. Still no dice.

Thanks,
Teddy510Are you sure the sub is PLUGGED into the right speaker & the sub is turned on?
My sub gets AC power & provides DC power to the right speaker which proves power to the left speaker.

Mine looks like these:

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Yep, everything is plugged in correctly. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the sound settings... even though I have everything set to stereo, my computer isn't letting go of the "center channel." I have my left and right channels as always, but there is sound that plays from both that shouldn't be, and that is what is very quiet. It's a weird issue and tough to explain. The large center speaker is a subwoofer. You only hear very low frequencies from it, if your hearing is still intact. You will not hear vocals through it.What I mean is that it's almost as if there is still a center speaker right under my monitor playing very quietly in comparison to my left / right. my left / right are at normal volume and my sub is providing bass in good proportion to the sound, but when my computer plays movie voices, music vocals, game cutscenes etc, it's very quiet as those are usually played through the center speaker. Like my computer is still trying to play through a center speaker which is no longer hooked up. Before i tried the surround sound speakers, my computer played everything normally, but even though I have reset my sound settings to stereo presets, the sound is scewed up.

Edit:

Imagine playing your favorite rock song, and both guitars are loud, but you only kinda hear the vocals in the background, even though they should be loud and in front, or watching a movie and turning the sound up to hear a dialogue sequence only to turn it down when an action scene begins.Quote

Not always...i've seen the opposite...Just to try and diminish the fear factor in the O/P's mind given the observation of patio. I have many adapters that as well as offering a variety of voltage selections also offer a polarity change. I have (because i did not know of how the device was polarity configured) just plugged it in and ALLOWED current to flow.If it didn't work as it was selected for polarity on the adapter i simply changed it to the other alternative. If the issue had been polarity it worked without any SEEMING adverse consequences to the device. Was i just lucky. Then the Op could simply eliminate that as an issue by plugging it in.truenorth Yes... i'd say you were lucky...Ouch!Now i too relieved of blissful ignorance have entered the fear zone. truenorthMaybe you'd better buy a charger, and maybe a battery too, on Amazon.com. You should be able to find these items there at perhaps the best price you'll find anywhere.

Solve : Will summer heat affect my wireless network??

Answer» Will summer heat affect my wireless network?
Yes! Why WOULD anybody think otherwise? In fact, it will destroy it. On shorten its useful life-span. And it has nothing to do with then radio frequencies used. All semiconductor electronics for consumer USE are meant for less that triple digit heat. The are supposed to be used indoors in a controlled environment.

What got my attention is an article in a Fresno Rag that started talking about the frequencies used by the Wi-Fi devices and how the heat does not affect radio naves, therefore the heat is not a problem.

Somme people do zero research. In the specs of any router, witless adapter or almost any electronic device, you will find a PAGE that says not to use the thing when the temperatures GO above 100 Fahrenheit. On make says 104. Another says 90. In any case, the damage can be cumulative and permanent.

If you router overheats, turn it off. Let it cool down. Place a fan net to it.Informative! Thanks.

Solve : SCANNING QUESTION?

Answer»

Hi, All.

I am new to this forum and hope to find some help. My question involves a scanner.

I am running XP Home, SP3, with plenty of RAM. I recently connected a Canon MF6540 Scanner/Copier. Very good unit. The software with the Canon allows one to make scans in pdf format, Word format and a few others.

Question: When I have 100 pages to scan, I want it to result in one file, to enable easy attachment to an email or for copying/moving to some other location.
The scanner has an auto feed tray, which holds 25-30 originals. When this particular load is run, and a second load of 25-30 originals is inserted in the scanner, the scanner software makes separate files. Thus, if you have 200 pages to scan, you end up with 8 separate files. I need to have an end result of one file.

I have the Adobe pdf viewer, but not the full Adobe program, which is expensive. The Adobe viewer does not have the facility to merge files. The scanner software will interface with Word, which might be an avenue to solve this problem ... not sure at this point.

I believe this must be a common SCANNING problem. I would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions anyone has.

Thanks to everyone in advance.

Regards,

BoochalHello, and welcome to the forum. I see two basic approaches here. One is to go the Word route, combining all the output from your scanning into one Word file, and then convert that file to PDF. If you have Word 2007, I believe you can save directly to PDF. If you have an OLDER version of Word, or I'm mistaken about Word 2007, you could INSTALL a PDF converter such as PrimoPDF and use it to convert your Word file to PDF.

ANOTHER option would be a tool like PdfMerge, which would allow you to merge multiple PDF files into one file. Both PdfMerge and PrimoPDF are free, at least for personal use. Check the license agreement when installing for more details. Soybean,

Many, Many Thanks for your response. I downloaded PdfMerge from Snapfiles.com and it works very well.

Thanks again for the very valuable information. You have really solved a problem for me.

BoochalGlad to hear problem solved. Come back anytime.

Solve : Finding operating system?

Answer»

I can access a hard drive externally and would like to find what operating system is on it? As I need to format it as I have a windows product key but the operating system information is rubbed out and cannot be read. If you do not know what is on it, the product key is of little value.
And even if you KNEW the name of the OS, the product key may be of not value.
The product key is specific for just one of many versions of an OS.I want to format the drive so the product is required but I don't know which OS to run I can access the drive from ANOTHER computer and see all the folders but don't know where to go to find the OSA "product key" is not required to "format" a hard drive with a file system.

There is a communication problem somewhere. Perhaps if you told us how the drive is to be used?

Or are you just trying to "recover" the product key of an operating system that is (or was?) installed on the hard drive?lol. my interpretation is that ojas has the product key of an OS that was installed on this hard drive, but cannot be booted into, and he wants to know what OS product key he has, then format and clean install the corresponding OS on this currently un-bootable disk of his.

the fact that interpretations are so varied suggests a lil more detail would be helpful JXY: After rereading the thread, I think you got it right...
--dahlarbear

ojas25: Give the Nirsoft ProduKey program a TRY. It has capability to read "product keys" from CURRENT running operating system or non-running operating system on same or different hard drive. It will list:
o Product Name - e.g "Windows XP Professional"
o Product ID - "xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx"
o Product Key - "xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx"
o Installation Folder - e.g "I:\WINDOWS"
o Service Pack - e.g. "Service Pack 3"
o Computer Name
o Modified Time

Read the DOCUMENTATION within the above link.

To access other operating systems within "ProduKey" access "File -> Select Source".

Solve : No Sound on newly fixed computer?

Answer»

So someone just fixed my computer and when I hooked it back up the sound didn't work, it wasn't SAYING there was a sound device or anything. Then something popped up about windows media manager or something and all of a sudden the red X went away and it said there was a device (I still didn't hear anything though) and then I restarted to install updates and now its back to the red X with no sound device. I waited 5 months to get it back and I would really like it if someone could help me. This is what dxdiag said before when it listed sound:

Since Everest is not reporting the MAKE of the motherboard, it's more difficult to get the proper drivers. Vista seems to recognize C-Media as the audio device. This is not Everest report, but DxDiag.

Download, and install Everest Ultimate Edition 4.6: http://www.lavalys.com:8081/everestultimate460.exe
Enter following registration code (Help>Enter product key) to make it fully functional:
RHGJE-54X47-HML9C-V498I-UUMVI
(it's all legal, the above version has been recently offered as a free download)

In left pane expand Computer folder.
Click once on Summary
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI

Solve : Computer stutters and produces buzzing sound under load?

Answer»

Hi all,

About a week ago I began to notice that under load (playing resource intensive games, CAD, full HD video playback, running multiple VMs) the system stutters every 5-10 seconds for about a second and a buzzing sound comes through the speakers which will interrupt any music or other sounds playing. A few times it also seems this will also happen momentarily if the system is trying to multitask. Prior to this, it ran fine for months since I built it. Resource Monitor doesn't show any spikes in any equipment during stutters and SMART statuses are all good.

Initially, I was concerned about display drivers, but after re-installing twice from different SOURCES, the problem continues. Given the heat we've been having here I thought something might be running too hot, but SpeedFan says otherwise. I opened the case and dusted everything to be sure. As there was still no change I considered that the problem may in the power supply, as I've heard of similar symptoms occurring with failing PSU. Switched to a known good PSU and I'm still experiencing the same problem in the same circumstances.

I'm hoping I can get a little input before I'm forced to completely troubleshoot everything. I haven't installed anything or made any significant changes to software in the last week, so I'm inclined to believe it's a hardware problem.

This system:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
CPU: Intel i5 650 (2 cores, 3.2Ghz, HT)
Motherboard: Biostar TH55B HD
RAM: 4GB 1333MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 460 SE (driver version 275.33)
HDD: WD Caviar Black 500GBYou already did the most obvious THING. Next try a different graphics cad, You may find the buzzing noise is from the graphics card.Quote

Try borrowing or using a greater wattage PSU. It could either be on the driver, processor or power supply.

Solve : reuse or rebuy??

Answer»

I have an HP Pavilion elite m9040n with a dead mother board. It has 3072mb memory, 640 hard dr, dvd burner/light scribe, NVIDIA Geforce 8400 GS, pocket media drive bay, TV tuner, 15 n 1 card reader/tv remote, wireless lan 802.11. Vista

I've been advised to just trash it and buy a new model with Windows 7. Can I recycle some of the features from the old tower (ex the pocket drive bay) to save money or will the cost of having someone install the items not be worth it? Don't know how to do it myself.Depends really. Would you be happy with it fixed? If so Just replace the motherboard they are cheap enough and certainly not difficult to replace so getting that done should be cheap. If you got the cash and fancy something new and up to date the go buy. simplze Quote from: novelgoddess on November 07, 2009, 04:26:13 PM

What makes you say the motherboard is dead? If it is truly dead, you can purchase an equivalent for $50-100 and pay someone to install it. In this case, cheaper to repair than replace.I agree with Computer_Command. You can keep that machine alive for awhile. and save money.

But, here a re some ideas.
Amazon and other PUT that machien a near $1400 new. That is a bit pricy.
A refurbished unit with a warranty is less half the price.
But for that much money, you can get a nice bare new machine with a NEWER CPU. Then salvage the RAM and HDD and DVD drive.

If you just go for the mother board, think about Gigabyte.
Three year warrenty.

The hard part is you can not use your OS on the new motherboard. (I may be wrong on this, but something like that is what a MS agent told me on the phone)

If it were me, I would think about warranty and the cost of a new OS.
If it were me i'd get a 2nd opinion on why you think the MBoard is dead...Quote from: novelgoddess on November 07, 2009, 04:26:13 PM

you had better make sure the reason why your motherboard was dead. of it cannot be repaired well, you have to have a new ONE.

Solve : Abit NF-M2S Motherboard Memory Problem?

Answer»

I have an Abit NF-M2S Motherboard with AMD Athlon 3800+ Duel Core 64bit processor.I previously had 2 x 1GB DDR OCZ PC5400 memory modules installed until 1 module FAILED and the PC wouldn't POST until I removed the FAULTY module.I have tried without success replacing the failed OCZ module with a Kingston module[known working] of the same VALUE but the PC wont POST and gives Long CONTINUOUS BEEPS until I remove it.With one module it will boot ok in either of the two slots but not with two installed..Any ideas? The Kingston is probably incompatible with the OCZ stick...different memory timings.
You should get an OCZ match...
