Solve : Is my sound card dead??

Answer»

A few days ago, I went to use my pc and the sound wasn't on. I though some of the volume controls may have been down or something may have been muted, but going into Control Panel, then Device Manager (this is WINDOWS XP btw) I found all volume controls up and NOTHING muted. At this point it STILL showed my soundcard--E-MU 0404. I uninstalled the drivers, then reinstalled them and still nothing. I turned off the computer then uninstalled the card then turned the computer back on, then rebooted again and and reinstalled the card. The first time I did this, "new hardware added" appeared, but I was still unable to get it to work. I retried it and now Windows isn't even showing the card at all. I've run Everest Home diagnostic software and that shows an Audigy 2 as my sound PROCESSOR, which I'm nearly 100 percent sure is what the E-MU platform is.

I just got the computer to find the card by CHANGING the Audio settings in CMOS from disabled to auto. However, I'm still getting no sound. And when I go to Control Panel----Sounds and Audio Devices Properties--the volume control is grayed out. Any ideas?Quote

When did this happen? That was the first thing you should check.

Yes, it sounds like the card is gone.

Solve : Weather extremes and laptop??

Answer»

I have an old laptop. About 4 years ago, the screen DIED, so I packed it away and forgot about it, planning to deal with it "some day". I forgot completely that I even had the THING until someone asked me for an old family picture that was stored on it. There are several pics/videos on it that I would like to get back. In the past 4 years, I have moved 3 times, and the computer has spent a lot of time inside self-storage units and most recently, my storage shed. It's in a box, but I know it has GOTTEN both extremely hot and extremely cold inside the buildings. No SUN exposure though. This past week it was 100 degrees with a heat index of 115, and that got me to worrying. I still need to go through boxes and find the computer, but assuming I do this, I have no way of knowing if it works or not because the screen died long ago. Is it likely that data from the hard drive data will be recoverable after all this time and temp extremes, or is the data likely destroyed? I have no idea exactly how cold or how hot it's gotten within the storage facilities, but I have to assume below 0 and over 120. I am not concerned about the computer itself, as it was already broken. I just want my data back All is not lost til you try...
See Here...

You will need a laptop to IDE converter cable... approx. 7 Bucks from any PC store...

Or the other option would be an external USB enclosure that accomadates laptop HDD's...more money...

Best of LUCK...Thank you Is it likely there is still data on there though? Or is it common for temperature extremes to cause the data to be lost? I'm sorry, I just really know nothing about this. Can't tell you til you try...

Solve : RAID Issue on Dell PE1800 Server?

Answer»

Hey all, I've posted on here before but I think this is my first time with a question.

I have a new client, for whom I will be installing new hard drives, because they're running low on space AND they're starting to get read errors.

The current situation is:

They have a Dell Poweredge 1800 server with a P8611 board. On this board is a SCSI U320 RAID Controller, which has two 76 GB drives on a RAID 0 array. They are running dangerously out of space as their Exchange DB grows, and just recently they have been getting drive read errors.

They can't afford to go to a new server and do a full migration, nor buy 2 new, larger SCSI drives. So, I have 2 1 TB SATA drives that I want to install.

What I would LIKE to do is this:

image their current volume and create a new RAID 1 array using the SATA Raid controller on the motherboard, and reload the image onto this new array.

I've been testing this on my test server in the shop but I can't get the procedure down. I'm AFRAID of Windows blowing up because, number one, it is a totally different type of Raid array, and number two, it's a different raid controller.

I'm currently using Acronis True Image to do the imaging, and I've read in articles and other forums that Acronis can do the imaging regardless of it being two different raid controllers.

The issue I keep having is after I image the original RAID 0 volume and re-image it on the new RAID 1 array, I get an NTLDR is missing error. It seems to work if I go from mirrored to mirrored, but not striped to mirrored, which is what I need.

Sorry this was so long and in-depth, but I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance.

-RyanAre you saying that you want to take the two 80 GIG drives out of your client's server, and then put them in your server to make an image of the drives?

Why are you switching from RAID 0 to RAID1?No, I want to image the current SCSI drives in the server they are in right now, then install the new, larger SATA drives on a *DIFFERENT* Raid controller in the SAME server, and also go from RAID 0 to RAID 1.

They decided with RAID 1 because they are crazy paranoid about losing their data, so I'm setting them up with mirrored drives, offsite backups, and onsite backups.Quote

The issue I keep having is after I image the original RAID 0 volume and re-image it on the new RAID 1 array, I get an NTLDR is missing error. It seems to work if I go from mirrored to mirrored, but not striped to mirrored, which is what I need.

I know you've probably already thought of this, but have you tried booting to the recovery console and using the copy \i386\ntldr c:\, and the copy \i386\ntdetect.com c:\ commands?Well another thing I did not mention is that when I restore the image onto the new mirror array, it restores as the same size partition as before. So, afterwords I tried resizing the partition with G-Parted (a small linux distro) that has rarely failed me before for this purpose. But, when I try doing this it tells me that the file system is corrupted. I tried a chkdsk /r in recovery console to try to repair it but it doesn't even find a windows installation.

It seems to be getting hung up on imaging the original striped array. I've tried this with 3 seperate loads of Server 03 and every time I create the image, Acronis tells me that the partition is corrupted and can only be imaged using the sector-by-sector method.

Am I doing something wrong with creating the intial image?

I will try the copy \i386\ntldr c:\ and the copy \i386\ntdetect.com c:\ commands when I get back into the shop tomorrow.

Those aren't the COMPLETE commands. You need to place you drive letter in there. this assumes that your CD drive is d:
copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

This might be a lost cause since recovery console doesn't even recognize the windows installation.

Would it be possible to just save all of the data and install a fresh copy of windows on the RAID 1 array?

How did you go about setting up the array? Went into the raid controller bios, chose to create a new array, chose raid 0, chose the drives for the array, and chose the default 8 kb chunk size.

then loaded Server 03 on this array.

when server 03 was loaded, I used acronis to create an image. when doing so, acronis reports the disk as being corrupted and says the image can only made using the sector-by-sector approach (this happens every time). I do this, and when it finshes I take out the raid card and put in a different one. (this is to test going from one controller to a different one, as mentioned in my first post)

When I create the new raid 1 array on the second card, I first try to load the image onto one hard drive without beign in an array. Then I create the mirror in the raid controller bios with the "with data copy" selection so the other drive will mirror.

When I try to boot from the drive to verify the image, I get "ntldr is missing".

So, it seems to me like the problem starts when I try to create the first image from the striped array.

Solve : CPU Temperature?

Answer»

How can I lower my CPU temperature?
I believe it's too hot.

Below is my fans setup:

And this is what Asus AiBooster tells when my PC is at idle after restart:
It doesn't look as though you have any hidden software that's stealing CPU power as it's on 4%, which leads to hardware.
Firstly, make sure you are using plenty, high quality thermal paste, such as Arctic Silver between the CPU head and cooling fan leaving not air in the gap.
ALSO, if you are overclocking, turn that off as it will increase the temperature.
You might want to invest in a new fan. i recommend this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Arctic-Cooling-Freezer-Rev-2-Cooler/dp/B002G392ZI/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1311766354&sr=8-13
Make sure you get the right one that fits your cpu.
Also, if your case will handle it, you might want to get an 8cm fan.
Let me know how it goes,
Luke
Hi Luke,

I applied the thermal paste as instructed in many websites/forums - a very thin even layer.

FYI, currently I REMOVE the side cover casing i.e. it's totally exposed to the air ventilation of the ROOM.
I'm not sure whether putting any additional fans will help.
If I close the side cover, the CPU temperature WOULD go up to around 90 deg.Get readings from another app such as SpeedFan...or Speccy.Quote from: Michael on July 27, 2011, 10:59:47 AM

The reason i suggested this extra fan is that it will create an air flow. Where at the moment you have stationary air in your room (probably) and the fan on the heatsink is just circulating the same air. With one fan on the front of the case, drawing air in, and one on the back pushing out, will give a wind tunnel effect and help remove hot air nicely.
Either that or run a desk fan into your open case until you get it sorted.Hi Patio, Speedfan gives the same readings.

Hi Luke, there is a ceiling fan in my room so the air is not stationery, and my computer desk is almost directly under the fan.
Anyway, I'll get a fan and blow in directly on top of the CPU fan with the casing closed and see what I get.

Thanks.
Are you sure the airflow from the CPU fan is IN? I always thought it should be all OUT for any direct and passive cooling.I can confirm my CPU and GPU fans are IN.
Is it just me, or is that FSB too high... 800 MHz...?Quote from: jason2074 on July 28, 2011, 12:40:24 AM

Hi Jason, YES, it's IN i.e. blow down.

As I understand from previous forum discussion, it seems that most fans blow down while some suck out.
All those I had used are blowing down.

Solve : buying a lap top and monitors?

Answer»

I am looking to buy a lap top for stock/share trading so need SOMETHING fast and reliable. I also want to run 2 or 3 monitors off of it to show different graphs etc. Does it matter what size the lap top screen is if I want to have large monitors and how do I wire them up? My budget is about £800 for the lap top. I think that the ram is more important than the MEMORY but please correct me if I am wrong1st of all, RAM is another name for memory. 2nd, a laptop running multiple monitors may be difficult or impossible to find.Hi Philip

I would look for a laptop that had a 3 year next business day warrantee. Most brand name business laptops have a option to restore a backup to any model from that maker so if you want to change in a couple of years you can use the same windows and software on the new laptop. This is also important should the Laptop get stolen. Matrox make this unit that allows up to 3 monitors from 1 video out put.

http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/th2go/

And i have used this on a build for Flight simulator X and it worked very well.

The rules say that i can't push one make or model but if you have a laptop in mind please post the link for comment.

Hi Lisa Thanks for the info. The Matrox looks like a good bit of kit. I am thinking of buying either a Samsung R780 or a Samsung RF510 or maybe a TOSHIBA Satellite L775-11E. What do you think? using an i7 for office applications is quite overkill... although it would be a good investment if you are planning to use the samsung rf 510 computer for the years to come. The Toshiba sounds just right if you are on a budget-it supports a huge video resolution (1600x1200 max)-will be handy if you are planning to hook it up to a huge monitor to monitor all your stock charts. However, the graphics card is not all that aspiring and will not HANDLE graphics-intensive applications with up-to-par performance-Intel is clearly not a leader in graphics cards. The Samsung's GT 420 is actually good for moderate gaming, not that I'd recommend gaming on a laptop.

RF510:http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-computers/performance/NP-RF510-S02UK/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail
Satellite:http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Satellite-L775-11E/1106669/
I'd recommend the RF510 if you have a little more money to spend.

The HP Probook series is also a pretty interesting deal.I think I'd go with a desktop/tower system if I wanted multiple monitors. You just have more flexibility in video card choice to support multiple monitors with a desktop system.Agree 100%Thanks Soyabean and Transfusion The reason I want a laptop is because I tend to only spend about 5 months in my home and the rest in a couple of other places. I hear what you say about the graphics card. which card on a lap top do you think is best? (for my usage) Also you say the i7 is overkill do you think the i3 is good for me or is i5 the best option. Thanks for your imput
the i7 is geared towards extremely CPU-intensive applications, say video encoding or photo editing, which will definitely put a strain on the battery life. Any graphics card with specs equal to or better than the Radeon HD 4350 will suit your needs.
The i5 is a good balance between price and power. The Asus X77 seems just about right.I'd recommend that you take a look at Lenovo ThinkPads, they are designed for business enviroments and are very robust and reliable. They are quite expensive but well worth it for the QUALITY in my opinion.

Solve : badly crashed computer?

Answer»

The other day, my computer had crashed badly, it would not even start in safe mode
No matter what i tryed.

It would just get passed the welcome screen to the desktop, and then dialog boxes would come up very fast saying "loading your personal settings" "logging off"
"saving your personal settings"
and then just repeating that over and over again. So it had to be taken away to get it fixed.

to cut this short he had reinstalled windows xp, and managed to recover the "my documents folder" pictures folder (etc).

He could not give me answer as to what went wrong as it could have been any number of things, although he had replaced the graphics card because the FAN had packed in which would cause overheating, and could have been a factor in what went wrong.

Also he had created a backup folder for me with the entire PC settings with
the file extention "TIB"

I was just curious about this, as he said if anything went wrong again i would have to call him out, and he would use this backup folder.

Could he have not given me this backup folder on a cd for me to use to boot from if things did go wrong.

I have looked up the file extention "tib" and thats probably why he did not give me any back up cd.

i just wondered what anybodys views were on this.tib means he used Acronis True Image for the backup....

Been reading about this

So basically, i could backup my whole computer includind the OS, if i had an external HDD and the acronis software, and recover if the computer FAILS againAs long as that backup is from that machine and Windows was installed on it yes...

However keep in mind it will only take the machine back to the date the image was created....any data/apps installed after that will be gone upon restoring.

I create an image 1 a week and burn the latest one Monthly...works for me.

very interesting suff, i might consider buying the acronis true image home 2009, and learn all about it.
just for the record though, which is better downloading the software or getting in the boxed version.

Solve : r.i.p. laptop??

Answer»

Alright, so basically, my boyfriend and I got in a fight, and he ripped my laptop in half, as in, the screen is completely DISCONNECTED from the bottom part.
I plugged his desktop monitor into it, and it worked fine, but my laptop no longer could pick up any wireless signal, or if it did, the signal was so weak I was unable to connect.
I took it apart, and tried to fix everything, but now the monitor won't work at all.
Any clue? The antennas are located in the monitor on a lot of laptops... you will need to have an external USB WiFi adapter if you ever want wireless on your laptop, short of FIXING the screen. What model is your laptop?

EDIT: Your boyfriend seriously needs a dose of estrogen to put out his testosterone-fueled wrath.I had to add that if you unplug the internal monitor cable and plug in a display you will be able to use the laptop as a desktop computer.Adding to transfusion COMMENT "Your boyfriend seriously needs a dose of estrogen to put out his testosterone-fueled wrath.".This particular type of computer malfunction can often be repeated originating from similar incidents. It can be random and very unpredictable. It is often NOT confined to computer issues but can become a factor of a destructive nature in almost any life experience where interaction occurs. While you are researching your next computer that will probably be required to replace your damaged one it is probably advisable that you also consider a replacement for the "boyfriend" as well. As with technology in depth research and a clear understanding of what you desire out of a relationship should be ESTABLISHED before you make your choice. Good luck, truenorthTransfusion is correct about the WiFi antennas being in the screen. As far as the no display on the monitor goes, are you sure everything was put back correctly when you disassembled the system. Does the system appear to boot even with no display (Hard drive LED activity, start up sound .etc) or does it just sit doing nothing? Finally does it produce any beeps or PATTERN of leds when it is powered on (This could help pinpoint the culprit).Dump the boyfriend. He is a dork.

Solve : New RAM upgrade not showing in BIOS or Vista index?

Answer» HI Guy's, will try to be as thorough as possible.

I have an Advent 9315 1.5 Duo Core
2Gb RAM (1916mb) 2x 1gb modules
SiS mirage 3 (376mb shared memory) which does seem a little higher, hard to say though.
BIOS ver: 1.00PARTTBLR
Win Vista 32bit SP2 version 6.0

OK, so I purchased 1x 2gb module from here
http://www.offtek.co.uk/ram-memory-2/advent/advent-laptop-memory/9315/mid78713

and installed it. The computer starts up fine with the module in.

However the new RAM is not showing in the BIOS or in windows experience index/DxDiag specs, I'm still showing 1916mb in both.

Here's what I've tried up to now.

Opened msconfig>boot options>advanced and maximum memory is unchecked already.

Looked in the BIOS but there are no options available for the RAM, just shows the 1916mb available

Tried a memory test on boot and no errors came back.

Tried refreshing the Windows experience index, nothing changed.

I've been assured that swapping the modules over will have no effect. (The second slot requires taking out the MB).

The site I purchased the RAM from also states that 4gb is the max RAM (3.2 or so available) and that 2 similar modules are not required.

So that's where I'm now stuck at. Tried reading through multiple threads on here and other forums, seems to be a problem for others as well but with no definitive answers.
Any help gratefully appreciated as always. Thanks in advance.

It's OK sorted it out. How did you fix it? Could help others who stumble UPON this thread through Google or a forum search.Sorry could not type more in my answer, I was meaning to come back to it and answer the issue. The issue is I'm EMBARRASSED to say simple.

The Advent 9315 has only one memory bank with one 2gb module.

I was told quite some time back that there was 1 bank under the keyboard and 1 under the quick access panel, which we actually joked about earlier in the month. That person will go unnamed as he's a good lad, honest mistake. (not you Cameron)

Problem is, there are LOTS of sites out there with people confused about how the RAM is set up in this laptop. Some think it's 2 banks some think its 1 bank. SEE the site I purchased the RAM from = 2 banks.

I've now informed the COMPANY that I purchased the RAM from that there website has a misleading product for sale, and of course I want a refund.

After getting these conflicting websites with conflicting information I did a lot of ground work to find out the truth. My old RAM had no stickers and no way to tell what it was. I used many different sites inc eBay and Amazon to get images of the RAM modules and I found one that I could make out it had a DDR2 2Gx, which saved me the trouble of removing the MB to see for myself.

So yeah the Advent 9315 has only 1 memory bank with a 2Gb module installed.

Solve : PC shut down immediately after cold boot?

Answer»

Hi all,

My PC is 4 years old. It has got 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Raedon HD 4600 PCIe series, CoolerMaster 550W running on XP SP2.
Recently, it shut down immediately after a cold boot. Sometimes it shut down before I could see the DESKTOP screen.

Since it kept shutting down, I thought that the problem might be caused by some corrupted core files of Windows XP, so I used True Image 10 to restore the system back to 2 years ago when everything ran very well. But the PC STILL shut down after the restoration of the system.

I had also used MeMTest86+ to do the memory check, and the 2GB RAM passed the test.

I have no idea what happened.

Please help me if you could.

Thank you so much for your time.

Solve : WinXP Ignoring Video Card!?

Answer»

I am currently running WinXP Professional on my computer. I recently tried to add another monitor to my setup. My computer has several video card slots. One has a DIFFERENT connecter than all the rest. An NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro card occupies this slot. When I inserted a new card into one of the other slots (and connected the new monitor properly), Windows boots and works FINE. However, the new card is ignored by Windows. When I looked in Device Manager at the new card, it said "The device COULD not start (Code 10)". I tried the same with a different new video card and the same thing happened. When I removed my standard card and only left the new one, Windows booted fine, sending video data to the new card and monitor. But when I put the old one in with it, the new card fails to start. Solve : Weird PCI-E Graphics card issue?

Answer»

I have been having an issue with this graphics card I am using, something I have never came across before. This card (Nvidia 8600GT) used to work but randomly started doing this. I have tried this card in multiple machines since but I still get the same problem. I have a dual DVI graphics card and I can't get either DVI to work UNLESS I am using a DVI to VGA ADAPTER. Once I have a VGA connection up it WORKS as if there is nothing wrong. I have tried multiple monitors/TV's to diagnose this. Does anyone have any ideas? I've CHANGED setting in the BIOS the graphics card is set as default.

(The onboard card on this MOBO has been acting up too, weird graphical glitches on the screen when there are a lot of images)

Solve : motherboard and harddrive?

Answer»

The motherbaord on my pc(HP) went bad. The manufacturer will replace the whole pc because of warranty. How do I get my downloaded files and documents off the harddrive before I send my pc back? I must say that only the power light comes on, not the light for the hd and the monitor is WORKING but STAYS dark.Slave Drive Tutorial[/u]

This will guide you on how to hook up your drive in another working system to copy/burn your info...
Make sure to double check with the manuf. that removing your HDD will not VOID the warranty.Thank you for your help but when I remove the hd my warranty is goneThen you can only rely on them to save your data in the Warranty PROCESS...this hardly ever works because it's not their priority...There is a tool called hd clone if you have another drive and an external hook up then you wont have to worry. i dont think that they'll do anything to the drive at least they shouldnt. Most computer manufacturer's warranties will be void if the case is opened. They put a sticker (seal) on the machines that you have to break in order to open the case. So there is no way to get the data from your hard drive if the motherboard is dead. If you explain to the company that you really want all of your STUFF, then thay may recover it for your. That is true but not all the time. Its like what you would see on OLDER playstation2's if you tried to remove it, it reads out void.

Solve : freezing & power off?

Answer»

Hi i hope someone can ADVISE. I have problems with a lenovo G555 laptop which started slowing down over the last few weeks then sporadically freezing and powering off with or without freezing first. It was running windows7 and had up to date antivirus software. It now will only work for about 10 mins before freezing or powering off

I tried a system check but it froze before completion. I fitted a new hard drive yesterday but it powered off before the windows installation was complete, it does this with or without the power supply attached so i dont think the problem lies with the power pack. The ram sticks have been changed and the same happens so i dont think the problem is memory related and it cant be software either now. Can anyone suggest what to look at next?I would certainly consider overheating as a possible issue.
Ive taken it apart and cleaned out the fan. fan is WORKING fine. Turned back on with the new hard drive in but it came up error reading disc with the windows disc in and wouldnt load it - it was reading it fine yesterday. So iv put the original hard drive back in and it started to run check disc again but has frozen at 13%. The previous two times running check disc on this hard drive it froze at the exact same place 13%.

Dont KNOW what to do next... iv eliminated software, ram, hard drive, power supply & fan
Why are you so sure it's not RAM related? You changed the sticks, you SAY. With what? Brand new compatible RAM? If so, maybe the memory controller (or some other component) on the MOTHERBOARD is flaky. Is this machine still under warranty?

Solve : Floppy Drive Error?

Answer»

For at least two weeks my computer refuses to respond when turned on. there is no indication that the system is running. I had previously discussed this issue with an EXPERT that said this maybe down to a loose cable.
The problem has continued ever since and now I am receiving an ERROR message on my boot screen..."Floppy Disk(s) fail (40).

I read an article that gave me a better understanding of the problem, yet I DO NOT have a Floppy Drive present on my system, so I am wondering whether their is something critically wrong with system because I've never has this problem before?

HELP.

PS, I'm running Windows XP Home Ed if that HELPS."Refuses to respond when turned on" - you mean it starts up and loads Windows then won't respond, or won't do ANYTHING at all when switched on?
That message can often be caused by a flat CMOS battery - the BIOS defaults come into effect and a floppy drive is expected by such SETTINGS, and if one is not present (as on your system) - and additionally if the system defaults to "Stop at any error" then you will see the behaviour you're experiencing.
Watch the screen when you switch on, do you see any messages like "Press Del / F2/ F10 for Setup" (the actual key or keys listed may be different depending on your system)? The Message 'Floppy Disk(s) fail (40) displays on the bottom, I press the F1 button to continue. If it was the battery shouldn't the clock reset itself but it doesn't.

In addition, when I said the system would not respond, I mean that the lights that that indicate the systems activity,; they flash continuously THEN the system comes on displaying the error message.

Replace the CMOS battery...part # CR2032...about the size of a dime on the MBoard.
Remove all power sources prior to this.

NOTE Afterwards if you still get the floppy error enter setup at boot and dis-able floppy seek at boot.

Solve : is it possible to replace the wire connected from the Power Button?

Answer»

Hi all,

PC was 4 years old, and recently it shut down FREQUENTLY, so I tried to find out what happened.
When I opened the PC case, I noticed that there was a wire connecting from the motherboard to the switch (power button) on the front panel of the PC case.
The wire looked very old, and part of it had melted.
I am not sure if the problem was caused by this old wire. I am not sure if I should replace it and see if the problem can be fixed, but I have never done this before.
Is it possible to replace the wire connected from the Power Button.

Here are some of the hardware in my PC:
It has got 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Raedon HD 4600 PCIe series, CoolerMaster 550W running on XP SP2.

Thank you for your time.

Kitty
If your case has a reset button, then you can simply disconnect the power button connector and plug in the reset button connector in its place. (this will obviously disable the former use of the reset button). Then you can run your PC for a while and see if the problem goes away.

You can buy them in electronics stores and lots of places online

Thank you so much for the quick help, Salmon.

And,
I think I should change the old CPU fan too.
But I have no experience either.
What should I consider if I want to buy a new CPU fan?
Do I have to find out the number of pins of my CPU before I buy a new CPU fan?1. Do you mean the fan or the whole heatsink/fan ASSEMBLY (the "cpu cooler")?
2. If you just want to change the fan, you should consider the size of the fan and placement of screw holes and the number of wires
3. If you mean the whole cooler you should get one suitable for your CPU type.
4. It sounds like you SUSPECT the CPU may be overheating.
Generally, wires don't melt for no reason, especially a four year old wire. You have got a short somewhere in your computer. You may need professional help on this one.Quote from: Salmon Trout on JULY 31, 2011, 02:53:25 AM

Hi Salmon,
I am not sure if there are any difference between a CPU cooler and a CPU fan.

Hi Salmon,
I am not sure if there are any difference between a CPU cooler and a CPU fan.

A fan is like a wheel with rotating blades that pushes air. A heatsink is a block of metal with fins that fits on the cpu with a clamp to hold it. A fan and a heatsink together form a cpu cooler.

Solve : Promise Problem?

Answer»

Hope I'm posting in the correct forum.

I've been given an old Asus A7V133 motherboard that I'd like to get up and running as a back up computer. So far just one problem that I'm unfamiliar with.

On start up, I get past the clock and memory checks, then to a screen with "Promise Technology" at the top. Underneath that the notice "Detecting", followed about 10 seconds later with, "Ultra100 Bios is not installed because there are no drives attached."

Everything halts there. What's it TRYING to tell me? Looking at the bios shows the system recognizing the hard drive. Where do I go from here?

Help is appreciated.Replace the CMOS battery on the MBoard...Part # CR 2032...available anywhere...
Make sure all power is unplugged and take anti-static precautions.

If this does not do it replace the HDD ribbon cableThat's an add-on controller card. If nothing is connected, you get that message. Change BOOT order in BIOS. Promise controller is listed as SCSI Controller. Turn it off or place it last. There were onboard Promise controllers as well and in many EARLIER machines...Well, I appreciate the ideas but so far no luck.

It appears the Promise controller is on board, but I can't see anywhere in the bios to disable it. Any other ideas?Good call, that one does have Promise onboard.

Yeh, it does but I've not been able to figure out how to disable it and allow the hdd to boot.
How are the jumpers set & which connector is the hard drive connected to.I'll have to check the jumpers tomorrow morning (Tuesday) due to a very LONG work day today, but the guy who gave me the board tells me it was working when he took it out.

As for the hdd setup, it's set to master and I get the same result if connected to the primary connector on the mainboard as either IDE or ATA (this board has connectors for both).

" Load Onboard ATA " should be set to disabled....and replace that CMOS battery.

Ok I want to boot with the drive I have in the machine right now which has Windows Vista Home on it 64/32 version . It is a 640 GB hard drive. I am adding a 200GB hard drive from my old computer that was running XP MCE. I do NOT want to use the operating system on that drive but there are hundreds of pictures on that drive I want to relocate on my other drive and then format the 200 GB drive. How can I do this? I thought I had the master/slave/cable select pin in the right place but the computer keeps wanting to boot from the 200 GB hard drive instead of the 640GB. Thank you it was my cmos setup I tried it and it worked out now I have the drive working but it has a partition in it because it was the boot drive in old computer and now I just want the plain WHOLE 200 GB drive NO partitions.

Currently it looks like this:

6.01 GB Healthy EISA configuration
E: 13.97 GB Primary Partition
F: 166.33 GB Primary Partition
The 6GB is from the hard drive being set up with the master info on it if the computer crashed
for a restore option but I obviously do not need that any more I just want a formated 200GB hard drive to use. Thank you in advance. Now that it is booting Please restate your goals for how you want it setup including what size drives...where the data is and how much etc.....
I have to admit i got confused here...but it isn't the first time.boot from the windows CD- you can delete partitions before installation.

Solve : Desperate Help! My poor 4GB Dane-Elec flashdrive?

Answer»

I have a Dane-Elec 4GB flashdrive. I keep it with me at all times and protect it because it has ALL of my life's work on it. I am on vacation at a relative's house outside the country. When I was getting ready to go out for the day, I left it beside his computer. When I came back and attempted to use it, it was suddenly non-functional. I've tried waiting for a bit and then putting it back in, and I've even tried to see if it would work on another computer. Both times, the computers keep asking me to format it. I've run a data recovery program on the flashdrive, and I've managed to get quite a few of the files back, but a good majority of them are corrupted. I REALLY don't want to reformat so I'm trying to find someone who can help. What can I do to get my files back?nobutseriously, Welcome to the CH forums. Regretfully given what you have already done to try and access the contents of your drive and with the RESULTS that have occurred the PROGNOSIS for further data recovery is slim if at all possible. What it appears may have happened is that "someone" at your temporary location INSERTED the drive and then removed it and did so while the drive was still being read. They probably did NOT use the 'safely remove hardware" procedure and that is why you are where you are now. I too have been where you are and my recommendation for the future is that for important data you must retain duplicate it to more than one media location. Wish i were able to be more encouraging. truenorthWhat data recovery did you run ?
Have you tried it in different PC's ?
How is it being reported in Disk Management ?

At any rate even though the Horse is already outta the barn if it has all your work on it there should have been a backup strategy...Im sorry to say, but I get alot of this where I work = 99% of the time the data is GONE. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... in the future back up USB flashdrives as well as your main PC hard drive.Actually, I DO back up some of my files. I have a 500GB backup that I had the misfortune of not being able to bring on vacation due to my immense fear of its being broken by rough-handling TSA. Also, I tried the flashdrive on two different computers, but got the same message time and time again. I doubt my relative could have done anything to it, since he always leaves my stuff alone wherever it is.
Anyway, I ran the diskdigger program and got most of my stuff back, but it was mostly corrupted. Then I handed it off to a friend of a family MEMBER's who said that she could fix it, only to have it returned to me with less than half of the files that were once on it, all HTML files missing, most mp3s missing, and now formatted (despite my asking her not to). Luckily for me, my HTML files are the chapters of a story I've been working on and that has already been published to the web. So as long as everything goes alright, I can try to get those back. I also found out that my brother recently accidentally saved most of my mischief on his computer prior to this incident. However, despite all that, they can't replace my dozens of notes MADE in TXT format. I know it seems impossible, but is there ANY way at all that I can pull at least a couple of files out of a formatted USB?My answer to your question would tend toward no. However it is clearly evident that an industry has grown up that claims otherwise. So depending on the degree to which you are prepared to spend money software is available that "claims" to be able to do it. Never having used any i cannot attest to their ability to do what they claim. I am including a link that explains the process and points to some remedies. It is but one of countless that a Google search "how to recover files after a usb drive has been formated?" produced. Be cautious.
http://www.geeksengine.com/article/recover-deleted-file.html truenorth
Recuva works quite well, but like any deleted file on any media, if you've saved any info to the media after the deletion, your chances of recovery become slimmer as you continue to write to the device. On flash drives, when you hit Delete, they don't go to the Recycle Bin for easy recovery.

Hmm, not sure what else to try.Without the Windows logon password you may be re-installing Windows...where's the password ?I'm not sure what you mean. I have never used a password to log on to Windows. It's blank and I just hit [Enter] to log on.Maybe something to do with the jumper....

Doubtful, as most of them couldn't get any response from the keyboard from the moment they turned on their systems. They couldn't even access their CMOS settings or anything, whereas in this case it stops working as soon as Windows LOADS, which is what makes me lean towards this being a Windows problem.

That jumper they're referring to clears the CMOS settings, it's common on a lot of motherboards. It's worth a try, but I don't think it will fix this.

Case37, you did use a keyboard that fits into the purple port I've shown above in my previous post, right? (This port may not be COLORED on your system.)Karmac - that did look promising but no luck changing the jumper cable. Thank you quaxo for keeping me focussed on Windows. Since I could move around in BIOS I changed the boot SEQUENCE back to boot from the CD and finally got it to reinstall Windows after which the mouse and keyboard became functional again. I am now in the process of reinstalling all the Windows updates. and trying to get back to NORMAL. This is quite a relief to get this old machine back in order. Yeah, that's what I FIGURED it was. Sorry you had to go as far as reinstalling, I know what an annoyance that can be. Never seen it quite so persistent like that. Usually switching ports around or using a PS/2 keyboard and mouse will get ya through, then you can plug the USB ones back in.

Glad you got it sorted now though. Let us know if you have any problems getting Windows setup again.

Solve : Random restarts, believe it to be the power supply?

Answer»

So my computer started randomly restarting a couple days ago (while playing games, browsing internet, coming out of standby mode etc.). I did some research and disabled the auto shutdown for windows to see if I got a BSOD but I did not, so that MEANS it is a hardware issue correct? I kept my "Speedfan" program running so I could see my temps and fan RPMs.

System 34C
CPU 51-58C (idle-peak)
AUX 37-67C
HD0 32C
HD1 31C
Core 53C

CPU0fan 2136 RPM (average)
AUX0 fan 3150 RPM
I have more fans than this but only these 2 showup (I have a total of like 7 fans I think)

A couple things are running hotter than I would like but nothing seemed bad enough for a restart/shutdown. Today when I turned the PC on it said AUX 126C! Which didn't seem possible but the auxfan rpms were 0 too. The power supply fan was not running, all others were though. Now I do not know much about computers so I was not SURE if it is normal for the power supply fan to not run when the computer is first turned on (only turns on when needed?). I am going to open the PC up and clean it out. I there anything else I should check before or while I open it?

Next post will include system specs, wanna GET this posted before another restart! Win XP5.1 service pack 3
P4 3.2 GHz
ASUS P5WD2 Premium MOBO
2G OCZ Ram
NVIDIA 8600 GT

Of course I can't remember what my power supply is though! It is antec though, as is the case.

Anything else you need to know let me know!Best and cheapest test for a PSU is to borrow one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there...Thanks Patio. I will see what I can find, how hard is it to change out? I haven't done a lot of work with computers but I am a quick learner.
It is not a antec BTW (antec was what I was supposed to get but that is a long story!) It is a thermaltakeX 480w.

Well I cleaned it out and it was a little dusty as always, OLD house so I do regular cleaning inside the case. Temps are down a little but the biggest drop is the AUX which is down to like 22C & the fan is only running at 760RPM now. The PSU fan was not running when I first started up the PC again, is that normal??
Quote from: myswtsins on April 19, 2009, 12:42:30 PM

The PSU fan was not running when I first started up the PC again, is that normal??

No. Definitely not normal. And it's still not running? Sounds like you need a new power supply with a working fan.The fan does start running after a few minutes.
I do not have one to swap, no one seems to have more than 305 watts. I am waiting for one more source that might have one. If I have to buy one (which is not a big deal, they seem to be reasonably priced at zipzoomfly) any particular brand or wattage anyone recommend? And can anyone recommend a good source for info on replacing a power supply or will anything I find on google do just fine?

I have had PROBLEMS in the past with random restarts, about 2 years ago when the PC was first built for me, and it turned out to be my RAM. One of the 2G kits was bad (and it is actually sitting next to me) so now I only have the 1 2G kit (2 separate stick). Can I try 1 of those sticks at a time to eliminate RAM as a problem or can I not break up the kit?http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10009795
This seems like a good deal but I have no idea if it is what I really need. I don't know if this is enough...
6 Pin PCI-E Connectors 1
8 Pin PCI-E Connectors 1
S-ATA Connectors 6

But it seems better then others of similar price. I guess I am opening up the case again to see what kind of connections I am looking at! Please let me know what you guys think about the PSU. Thanks! So last night my computer shut itself down and will not start back up now. The fans and lights come on but nothing ever loads. There is no beeping that I can hear. My fan is too loud to hear if anything else is running too.

I do not have a power supply I can swap in. Do you still think it could be the power supply? Please help, I use my PC for work so this is not a good SITUATION for me.

Something I did not list yet is my harddrives, 2 - 320GB Maxtor.
Things that I have done different recently are using standby after being idle for 30mins & I had a virus (fake anti-virus program).Power supply install.....

Solve : how could i know the RAM that i have is DDR, DDR2......??

Answer»
Hello, guys how are you doing?

I have found a RAM ( MATRIX 16M84X-6) in my company and right now, i want to BUY a desk top computer. So, my question is
1. what kind of computer shall i buy in order to add this MATRIX ram? does this matrix ram is DDR1 or DR2?
2. how could i know (say) that a computer or a laptop has SDRAM, DDR1, DDR2.....?

Please guys help me?

Thank you To find out the type of RAM that is, just Google it. It's DDR 400MHz RAM, 512MB.
To find out what kind of RAM a computer uses, you can either look at the actual memory socket, or look up the manufacturer's info, for example find the manual.

Hope this helps.yonee, You can also go to the "crucial" web site (a memory manufacturer) and download their scan program which will tell you exactly what you have and what are your maximum RAM data for your computer. It's free and there is no obligation for you to buy their products. Also you could download another free program "EVEREST" and it will scan your computer and tell you everything very specifically that includes what you have as RAM.truenorth
thank you so much guys i understand what you said
Hello, guys how are you doing?

i ALREADY downloaded the Crucial System Scanner tool in another PC and detected that the following info

System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
System Model: HP Compaq dx2390 Microtower
Motherboard Manufacturer: MSI
Motherboard Model: 2A78
* Maximum Memory Capacity: 4194304 MB ( DDR PC2-6400 )
* Currently Installed Memory: 1024 MB
* Available Memory Slots: 1
* Total Memory Slots: 2
* Dual Channel Support: N.A.
* CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
* CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz Model 15, Stepping 13
* CPU Speed: 1995 MHz

Right now my question is, the RAM of this computer is DDR pc2-6400 and the one that i found is DDR 400MHz RAM, 512MB. So, if i goin this RAM to this scanned computer, do you think it will work? i mean both RAM are DDR.

THANKS

See the 2 in PC2-6400? That MEANS it's DDR2. Not sure why it says DDR PC2-6400, but it's definitely DDR2, not standard DDR.
Thanks calum and i really appreciatedThat Matrix 16m84x-6 ram should be an DDR EEC REGISTERED server ram, if it has chips on both sides, its a 1gbHe hasn't been back for 2 years...Module Name - PC2-6400
Standard Name - DDR2-800

DDR 400MHz RAM, 512MB is not compatible, it's DDR, DDR2.

Solve : installing an external hdd inside tower?

Answer»

Hello forum,
I have an external hard disk (LaCie little disk 500GB USB 2.0) which has a DAMAGED adapter and for that I want to install it inside the new PC I'm going to buy. I'm not sure if it will be compatible with my motherboard, but before trying I want to know if after the installation I'm going to lose my files. I've done some search, but I found no accurate RESULTS. If someone has an answer, please INFORM me.If you open the external drive CASE, and take the hard drive out and install it in a computer case as an internal drive, the files on the drive should be unchanged. They will not vanish. This assumes the disk itself is not damaged.

Thanks Salmon Trout, that was quick!

Solve : new build shuts during first boot.... help.?

Answer»

I just built a new PC today....I need troubleshooting help.

Biostar A780L3G
AMD Phenom II X4 840
Logisys CS308 case with 450watt PS

I have re-checked all connections.

my problem:

1. I turn on PC, INITIAL screen SEEN. all fans are running

2. press DEL to enter set up (boot from DVD is not active. I am trying to set it)

3. PC power shuts off before I have opportunity to scroll through screens.

If I press power again it will shut off in less than 10 seconds.

if I leave off for 10 minutes, I get as far as step 2 above.

Not sure how to proceed.

thanks in advance for your help.

Elizabeth

overheating/CPU thermal paste/heatsink issues is all I can think of... I'm sure others will come up with more ideas.

It would be helpful if you could take a few pictures of your assembled PC so we can check to see if there's anything wrong.here is what the store IT help line suggested.

Greetings Elizabeth,
I understand you have a problem with your computer. If you could enter the BIOS right away and then press F10 to save your changes and exit. See if that might resolve the problem, if not you might have a bad battery on the motherboard, or another problem with the motherboard itself.
If you still have trouble after saving the settings, I would recommend returning the motherboard for another one.

Thank You,
Ken - Micro Center Technical Support
If you do happen to return the MBoard ask MicroCenter for an upgrade...
I've had nothing but issues dealing with their MBoards.Since I paid a penny for this board (on sale-Gee, I wonder why?), I was going to just get a real board now. I was thinking Gigabyte board. I have had success with these on LAST 4 PC's. but have heard about posting problems recently.

any recommendations. I am not a gamer. I do like to have several web windows open at one time, I use 4D embroidery software (cad for sewing) and Often have photoshop open at same time as 4D.

My prior PC is too slow. 1GB that is why I decided to build a new one. give the old to hubby-he only surfs web.

here is what I already have.

AMD Phenom II X4 840
8GB RAM DDR3 1333
Logisys CS308 case with 450watt PSThat is one big upgrade, suitable for gaming.
Gigabyte boards are pretty expensive-I prefer the American Megatrends BIOS for customization purposes on Asus/MSI boards, although that is totally up to personal preference. Get an AMD 890 GM, socket AM3 chipset board-it comes with the Radeon 4290 which will handle photoshop on a 19-in, 1366x768 display without any hassles (personal experience.)
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/890GXM-G65.html
Something like this motherboard would be great.

4D Embroidery? I just heard of a network-enabled embroidery machine last week and now they come oue in 4D VERSIONS?!? if u have'nt changed the motherboard then i would like to help, check if the smps is providing proper voltages
better change the smps.
thanks all. it turned out to be a bad internal battery in motherboard. they gave me replacement board...yes i took the replacement for the penny (putting it into another machine). Ended up getting a Gigabyte 880. everything works great.

thanks.

ElizabethGood News...
That Gifabyte will serve you way better than any Biostar...

Solve : Turning A laptop to a flatscreen monitor?

Answer»

So I have this old laptop that I am trying to convert into a flatscreen monitor by following this guide: http://www.instructables.com/id/Laptop-Converted-to-2nd-Monitor/. The battery is broken atm so can't test it myself. Some of the stuff WENT over my head and I wanted to check in here and make sure I was doing everything right. First off, I TOOK everything our except the inputs, the FAN, and the disk drive (idk why). I then took the monitor and plugged it in to the motherboard from the opposite side of the computer. The guy in the guide connected the brick directly to the motherboard because he said the input that you put the AC adapter in was loose or something. Instead of doing that I just left the battery in. I then glued the power button on. Here are some pics of what I have:

(back.. the power button is at the bottom, but you cant really see it)

(front)

So, will it WORK or did I fail?Spending $50 to turn a 14 in monitor into a flat screen monitor makes no sense in 2010 when you can purchase a 19 in monitor for $100 or find one used for less. The 19 in will have digital & analog inputs. The converted laptop cannot connect directly to any graphics card, it must be used in some "weird" network CONFIGURATION, see Step #9 in the link you provided. All I can understand is that it is now some kind of network terminal. Other than that, I can't tell if what you've done will function.

Solve : Does My BIOS Support Larger Than 137 GB Hard Drive??

Answer»

I've got a new 320 GB Hard Drive for my Gateway Laptop that is replacing a 60 GB Hard Drive. The computer only recognizes 127 GB. I've read there are three issues I must resolve. I'm using Windows XP-Ser Pak 3 which addresses the first issue. I ran a utility that says my 48 bit LBA is enabled for larger drives which addresses the second issue. Lastly, I need to determine if my BIOS and MOTHERBOARD support the larger hard drive. I read I should go the the manufacturer for that info. Well, the Phoenix Website does not have a support tab. I went to the Intel web SITE and they recommended I run a utility called 'Application Accelerator'. Every time I run it I get a 'Your Chipset is not Applicable' message. Am I overlooking something. Is there ANOTHER way to find out if my BIOS supports the new drive? Quote

he computer only recognizes 127 GB
Yes, BIOS does not have the 48 bit LBA.
Do not even attempt to write anything abov the 127 line. But... no buts.

Theu problem is explained at http://www.48bitlba.com/

If your don't understand anything, please come back here and continue in this threadWhat particular model is your Gateway laptop? Have you read the manual(if still available)or check online for that particular model? I went to the 48 Bit web site, even downloaded the utility HDINFO. It scanned my system and said that my system supported 48 bit LBA. I also used the BIOS Agent Plus utility. It scanned my system and gave me contradictory info about what's installed on the laptop compared to the manufacturer's spec sheet. I have a Gateway Model MX6030 running in XP SER Pak 3. The Gateway specs indicate I have an Intel 852GM Chipset. The utility that I ran (HDINFO) says it is an Intel 3580 Rev.2 Chipset. One last thing, when I look at the BIOS data while booting up, it states both my System BIOS and Video BIOS are SHADOWED. Does that have any impact on my problem??My error. If you BIOS was made or revised after 199,You have a recoent BIOS that does support 48 bit LBA

Your problem may be how SP3 was installed on you machine. After installing a large drive, you have to update the registry in XP sp3. the SP3 should have made the changes. There is some confusion on this. I recall that I had to do the registry edit with SP2, even THO they said SP2 already had the 48bit support.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303013

The http://48bitlba.com site is, I believe, the vest authority on the subject. But it is hard to understand. There are three or fours levels of concern.
1. BIOS.
2. Service Pack.
3. Prior Install.
4. Registry edit.
If the prior install was under 137 GB, the installation may t 'turn on' the right values in the registry. Unfortunately, This is not well-documented.

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic36678.html
http://www.48bitlba.com/enablebiglbatool.htm
Did you use the above tool?If its an ATA HD, I think it will not support a 320 Gb HD as compared to a SATA. But I could be wrong. See this link
http://harddrive.specs-com.com/gateway/gateway-mx6030-hard-drive/Gateway MX6030
Given the specs, the 320GB should be supported, but it clearly is not.
A 320GB ATA drive is $100, because very few computers can use them. A 120GB is $60. I would just exchange it for a 120GB. If you have to spend any more than $100 for a laptop, it's more cost effective to buy a new one. There's some really nice ones for less than $500.Computer_Commando,
Good advice! If he can not resolve the issue, just get a smaller drive.Just an update to my problem: Initially I cloned my old hard drive to the new one and installed the new one to replace the original drive. After trying your suggestions and running several utilities, I ended up reinstalling the old drive and connecting the new drive as an external drive. When I do that, the system recognizes the entire 320 GBs. Looks like it's either live with that environment or live with a 128 GB hard drive (It's too late to return the new drive). That will work. Use the larger external drive for videos and stuff that takes a lot of space. And use it for backup of your system.

You can make a 'compressed drive image' of the OS and put it on the external drive.

BTW: There are free programs out there that lets you recovery a Windows OS from an external drive using a Linux boot CD. No WinPE needed. The other option would be to partition the 320 into say 120 and 200...
Re[image the 120 partition as a bootable partition and it should see both...
Then wipe the existing internal and use it as external storage...Found this: If the BIOS of your motherboard or controller card supports the drive but Windows does not, see Answer ID 928: The full capacity of EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) is not recognized in Windows 2000/XP.

Solve : picasa problem?

Answer»

when working with pictures in picasa,my computer goes off and I get a black screen that says keyboard error or no keyboard present. If it is only occurring with that PROGRAM uninstall it via "add/remove programs". Then reinstall it from the Picasa site. It is a free program. After you have done that come back and TELL us the result.truenorthIf I uninstall the program, what will happen to all my pictures, truenorth? Will I lose them?Depending on how your pictures are saved, whether edited or original photos. The save options to location/FOLDER in your hard drive is usually the default. Other options are thru disks or flash drives. Just make sure you are saving them. http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=11021 As jason has indicated ENSURE that you have stored the pictures in a separate folder or other location than picasa THEN uninstall the software. You will be able to reintroduce them to Picasa after you have reinstalled the program for any manipulations you may wish to execute on them.truenorth

Solve : SATA hard drive undetected?

Answer»

Hi

3 years coming up to 4 i built a pc, custom ordering all the parts and with a bit of help of a friend i built it all and have had no problems until now. I'm using a western digital SATA hardrive running on legacy power on my ASUS motherboard.. one day i try to boot up my pc and it tells me to instert boot media so i check my BIOS and my hard drive isnt being picked up and my IDE DVDRW is primary IDE master.. the BIOS settings still enable SATA and will pick up a slave IDE hard drive but luck on my SATA. I've tried changing the cables with no joy ( in fact there are two types of pairs of SATA ports on my motherboard coloured RED and black and i couldnt remember which i connected them to originally so i tried 'em all). When connected i believe the disk drive powers up THOUGH i cant really feel it spin or such it does heat up though of course i never checked when it was working so this could be the norm.

I'm really not sure what to do about this, i cant afford the £70 or so just to see if it can be fixed and though i might be able to buy a new SATA hard drive IM worried i will have the same problem and really be WITHOUT a paddle. If anyone can SPARE some time to try and help me I'd really appreciate it as im totally stumped here.If the drive isn't showing in the BIOS:

1. The cable is bad.
2. The drive is dead/dying.
3. The motherboard is having problems.

It might be worth hooking the drive into another system and seeing if it works. That'd be the first thing to do I think. Thanks for the reply, i think i can rule out the cable at any rate.. and my motherboard will pick up an IDE but i dont have a different SATA drive to test on my pc or a different pc to test my SATA drive on im afraid so not sure what i can do about that.

Solve : Motherboard bios issue?

Answer»

Computer is not detecting alot of hardware such as the video card. Overall system is just not functioning right. I wanted to try to install new bios to see if that would resolve the issue but am unable to find them anywhere on the net. The motherboard is a FIC K7MNF-64. I have checked the FIC website and couldn't find anything at all. Another thing is this computer doesn't have a floppy drive. Don't really personally know anything about DMI but think that might be the issue. I did notice on boot that it was verifying DMI. Any help/assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance of course.Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <>< Reformated LAST night with a fresh install of Windows XP. Only thing that I have installed at this point is a drivers package. Computer wasn't detecting/installing ethernet card. It started about a week ago when I tried to install Service Pack 3, WELL first NOTICED. The installation wouldn't ever finish. Would just error out over halfway. Same with Windows MEDIA Player update. Then a couple days ago the computer was running slow and Firefox was freezing while trying to load up Yahoo as home page, would have to stop the browser before it started to load Yahoo then go to the site which I wanted to in order to avoid this. So I figured I would reformat to start out clean and fresh. Which only exposed these other issues with hardware not being recogized or installed properly.Where are the chipset drivers you installed from ? ?I haven't installed any new chipset drivers yet since I am unable to find any. The drivers package that I installed after the reformat last night was from the eMachines website if you are asking about those. It was just a package of drivers for ethernet card, sound card, etc. The problem was occuring before that installation. Also the drivers for my video card will not install since it isn't being detected at all. However I do have the monitor connected to the video card and am using the same computer on these forums. Many external driver components are reliant on having the MBoard chipset drivers installed correctly...that's where i'd start troubleshooting...

Solve : Which cooler is better??

Answer»

OK i while back i started a topic about tips for making a NEW computer and now i did... i have the computer and it running Fine... THANKS allot again guys...

the thing is that i bought a Masscool 90mm Hydraulic CPU Cooler at the same time i bought the new Intel CPU w/o knowing that i came with a cooler... So which one should i use? Also i attached the pix..

Ps: i heard that the processor is capalbe of more.. (overclocking) [saw one that does 3.83Ghz?!?!?!] Can you guys provide me with an instrucktion on how to overclock this w/o shortening the life span or damaging it? Intel Pentium E5300 2.6GHz 800MHz Socket 775 Dual-core 45nm Processor.

Thanks ^^

Thanks ^^

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Both coolers should be fine, why don't you stick to the one that came with the processor?

You can't overclock something without degrading the LIFESPAN of the component.
Overclocking increases heat, and ALWAYS reduces the life of the component.

If you want more performance SPEND a few dollars more and purchase faster components. Intel stock coolers are more than adequate...return the other one.Quote from: Quantos on November 06, 2009, 01:06:47 PM

Thanks for the tip..

But i updated my bios version and it came with a new menu (AI Overclock) or something like that... and i set it to 20% is that still gonna shorten the life expectancy.. I would not overclock unless it's done by the manufacturer and they stick a good warranty with it.Quote

Short answer: Yes.
