Solve : second chance for windows 98se?

Answer»

:-/
 good afternoon

i was wondering, is it POSSIBLE to download a free verion of second chance for windows 98se as i have no recovery disk, even if i had i STILL can't use it because my floppy disk drive died on me after i installed a  liteon cd-rewriter.

regrds
daveexpress:

You may be able to get the floppy drive to work.

Is the floppy drive data cable connected FIRMLY to both the drive and the motherboard?  Is the power connector from the power supply connected firmly to the drive?  Does the light on the floppy drive STAY LIT even though there is no diskette in the drive?

Solve : Help with CD Drive/Game installation?

Answer»

This is what I posted on a site I go to, so I'm jst copying what I had. ^_^ Ok:

Yeah, so it got here today, and I was all excited. But after some suspensful installing (Lol, yeah, the PC was making some pretty odd noises! O_o And taking long on certain data, but it's just because they're large files) I finally installed all 4 CDs. When I got the message (that you get when installing all PC games with multiple disks) to put disk 1 back in, the drive wouldn't open.

You see, our first disk drive/tray had problems, it stopped reading disks, saying that there was no disk in the drive when there was. So we ordered a new one, this one, and it kinda had problems the whole time. You have to click the eject button several times and wait in between before it would open. But it never stopped reading disks. 'Till now, of course, when I get my new anticipated game.  But it worked again after that...-_-

Yeah, so I finally got it open to take out disk 4 and put disk 1 in,and I closed it, with disk 1 on the tray. It just kept saying "Insert Disk 1" after I clicked ok. It wasn't recognizing that the disk was in, and kept saying it wasn't. So I clicked cancel, and erased all I had done. -_-

I really would like to play it, and when I tried again, it wouldn't read disk 4 when I put it in druing installation and did the same thing--"Insert Disk 4" even when it was in.

Any help? I was REALLY waiting for this game to finally get here, and now it did, and it doesn't work -_- Any suggestions? (Not getting a new disk drive, because as I said, I've done that before.) A new PC is definately in order, but is there anything I can do short term? [glb]Thanks! ^_^[/glb]

((For reference- I have: WINDOWS XP, nVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420 graphics card, 700 something RAM and I'm not sure of the GHZ of the processor...))

Yes...So can anyone help me? :-/Are these DVD Cds you are installing from? Do you have a DVD Reader Drive? Scanned for viruses and Spyware? Do you meet the game's requirements?

[glb]Flame[/glb]You say that it has problems with reading other CD's as well? Why would this be any different?

1) Make sure the drive is installed correctly- cables, jumpers, on it's own IDE channel #2 (not sharing with a hard drive).

2) Check the manufacturer's site for any firmware updates

3) What Flame said

4) Make sure the CD's are clean.

5) Try music CD's and data CD's. Do they all have a problem?

6) What is the make and model of the drive?Well, no, the drive *reads* games, but it's just you must clikc the eject button several times to make the tray come out.

So, I'm pretty sure it reads other games, the first time it hasn't read a game was while doing Fable. It was the old drive that didn't read disks.

Erm, what do you mean DVD CDs? I don't know what you mean by that, they're regualr game CD ROMs. Viruses and Spyware--Lol, no, that's unlikey it's not connected to the internet. O_o

Yes, the requirements are met, they are all over what's needed, besides the graphics card, which meets it.

1) I just opened up the PC before, I made sure everything was in, but can't be sure the IDE cable isn't sharing a line....WHat does it look like? Is the ribbon leading out of the drive? Or the connector with a few different color wires in the drive?

2) Manufacturer of the drive, I suppose you mean? Ok, I guess I'll do that.

3) Ha,

4) Oh trust me, they're shinin' like they're no TOMORROW.

5) Yeah, I guess I should try some other CDs...but it's not like it doesn't read any disks. When I re-try installing (I've tried multpile times, to check) it won't work with random CDs. One time it doesn't read disk 4, the next time it's 3, then most recently it was disk 1. Quite odd.

6) It's a MAXTOR 6L040J2. That help?Oops,--*like there is no tomorrow. Yeah. The 4 wire multicolored adapter coming from the CD drive is the power adapter. The flat silver cable is the data cable. Make sure both are on snugly.

Frankly, if it has trouble getting the signal to eject the CD (or whatever it is!) that sounds electromechanical re: the drive, not the game, particularly if this happens with other CD's (or even with no CD in the drive, right?

If part of it is not functioning correctly, it would be a poor conclusion to assume that all other functions are fine.

Check out that other stuff and post back.  Yeah, I made sure both were in, and pushed  them too,  for kicks and giggles

Yeah, I'm 99% sure it's the drive, because yes, it does it when there's not even a disk in.  :-/

So, any ideas?

(P.S., on the other site I go on, it was mentioned, though I asked it, if I should do the thing where you change the secondary and primary channels and which one the drives on. Should I do that?)Hudo-Kudo.......  Well , with all due respect , while I was more than amused at your abuse of the English language.....it appears that you don't have too MUCH of a idea of what goes on inside the case of a computer .....
perhaps you could get someone who is a bit more used to installing hardware to check out the install of the media drive you have installed .......  The issue could be the new drive itself .....especially if its a maxtor.

Primary channel - Hard Drives, Secondary channel CD drives. If more than one, one should be configured as master, the other slave (on each channel).

Solve : trying to setup home network?

Answer»
I have tried to figure this out on my own but I am only getting more confused. I have a computer downstairs that has internet from the cable company. I would like to setup my 2nd computer upstairs to get on the internet through a wireless hookup. I need to know EXACTLY what I need to hook up to do this.
I have some hardware that someone gave me but I don't know if I have everything I need.
I have 2 Linksys wireless USB network adapters 802.11b
I have a Belkin router. I have a Netgear access point 802.11b. I have a Netgear 4 port 10/100mbps Dual speed hub and tons of cords. All of this was in a box...there is more in there but this is what I thought I needed...but everytime I think I have it figured out I read something different  on another website.
What I really need is just a list of EVERY component I will need to do this. I will try to take it from there.
Please help?!!!
AmyI think a router + 1 adapter for the computer is all you need ot make this WORK. The router goes between the cable modem and the main computer, so TWO cat5E ethernet cables here. The USB adapter goes to the upstairs computer so it can see the router. B equipment is fine for your purpose. YOu don'y need anything FANCIER (or faster) for internet access.

Do you have a driver CD for the USB adapter? If not there will be one on the manufacturer's web site. The fact that they are different manufacturers has no bearing.Thank you very much! Yes, I have the driver cd. The adapters were still in the boxes.

Solve : Re: Computer Monitor sizes?

Answer»

Why is the sky blue, rateliff.

This is a peculiarity of CRT (CATHODE ray tube) monitors. The viewable area is always 1-1/2 inches less than the actual size. Thus, your 20 inch MONITOR comes up a little short when you actually take a RULER to it.

LCD monitors don't have this problem. A 15" LCD is EXACTLY 15 inches corner to corner, almost exactly equivalent to a 17" CRT, which is 15.5".

Solve : Two network cards?

Answer»

OK i made my new COMPUTER and the ASUS A8n-SLI deluxe came with TWO ETHERNET cards. Is it possible to use both cards with a router to get a faster or more stable connection? Because i tried just plugging in two ethernet cables from my router and only the one that i PLUG in first gets used.

PLEASE HELP?One nic card should be enough...........that why a router is used unless you need to network your system......save the  other one  for another PC....KP:

No, you only need one to connect to your router.  The other may be used to connect directly to a network printer, or to another computer (via a crossover CAT5, CAT5e or CAT6 cable).  However, since you have a router, this is not necessary.

Use the second card as a spare if the first one dies.

Solve : Hard Disk Format trouble?

Answer»

I have a 40 GB HARD disk which installed XP Pro, after I fdisk it into two parts, I just can´t format any PART of them. During the format process, it tried many times to "recover FAT units", finally when it finshed with 100%, it stopped with  " can´t write out information to FAT" error when it is getting around 15% process, then format terminated.
I think this hard disk is finshed, but would like to be sure. :-/
Thanks very much for help!

kittypryde.....Did I understand you to say that you installed XP pro and then did the fdisk to create the partition ?
let us know

dl65  Atucally, the HD was installed XP Pro(NTFS), then it got problem so I want to install it again. At beginning, I used "recover option" of XP and it worked for 3 days. Finally, I decided to format everything.  I used XP´s setup tools to format(failed, it told me that HD could be damaged) or fdisk(it passed but couldn´t format. It failed with both NTFS and FAT32 file system. So I came back to old DOS way to fdisk and format, this time during the format process, it tried many times to "try to recover FAT unit", but after it finished with 100%, it stopped at the the process of "write out information to FAT", then format terminated.kittypryde.....How old is the hard drive in question and what brand is it ?
Do you have a floppy drive on that pc ?
Do you have a floppy boot disk ?
So do you still have two partitions or just one ?

dl65

kittypryde.....Here's a step by step installation procedure complete with screen shots ........
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdrepair/part1.htm

dl65  hey, pal, thanks very much for the help.
When I said "old DOS way", i mean I boot computer from floppy cos XP setup doesn´t give me the error message I want. Yes, this hard disk is fdisked by two partitions(FAT32 of course, DOS way.:-)) and both of them can´t be formatted. I really would like to know what actually happened, or what it mean by " can´t write information to FAT".
My last try is Virus. I really doubt cos I did a complete scan after that rare 3 days´"normal" time and didn´t find anything.
The hard disk is  Quantum 40GB, bought about 2 or 3 years.
Thanks. Quote

The hard disk is  Quantum 40GB, bought about 2 or 3 years.Thanks.

Quantum sold it's hard disk business in 2000, so that's five years. I guess it could have been lingering old stock somewhere, but I BELIEVE the disk is older than that.

Write zeroes to the Hard Disk Drive. Obtain the proper software from the Hard Disk Drive manufacturer.

Solve : Recommendations for where to get computer serviced?

Answer»

We're in the GTA in Ontario, and our computer needs to be looked at by a professional, (we've only managed to make things worse by tinkering on our own). Does anyone have a recommendation for where to take it?

Is Future Shop a good idea?  It's a Dell Dimension 8200.Zip Code Please

[glb]Flame[/glb]M1M 3P6hhhmmm... Do you have a CompUSA http://www.compusa.com  , a BestBuy http://www.bestbuy.com , or a Circuit City http://www.circuitcity.com  in your area?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes, we have a Best Buy...shall we head there?Well, I'm glad that of all places, you have a bestBuy, becuase inside all BestBuy stores now, is something called GEEK Squad. They are a computer support task force, and can get you back on your feet. So yes, head over to BestBuy, and go to the Geek Squad department. If for some reason, your location does not support geek Squad, then BestBuy will do a good job as well. (Although bestbuy says that Geek Squad is in EVERY store. http://geeksquad.com/servicesandpricing/bestbuyprecincts.php  )  Good luck!

[glb]Flame[/glb]A privateer pc shop MAY produce better results.....check with other peoples recomendations......

What is wrong with your pc.......and is it still under warrenty from dell? How old is it?

[glb]Flame[/glb]It's about five years old. I doubt it's still under warranty, but we've LOST that info anyhow.

We'll head over to Best Buy, thanks guys!Sure! let us know if you have any more questions!

[glb]Flame[/glb] Quote

Does anyone have a recommendation for where to take it?

Here of course.  LEARN how to maintain it yourself.

Saves money!Depends on what is wrong with it though...

[glb]Flame[/glb]We need to replace the hard drive, it was "operating outside if specifications", and rebooting endlessly.  But we might end up just buying a new computer, cause we'd like a RAM upgrade too, and the TYPE of RAM we have is obsolete, very difficult to find and extremely expensive.

I'm hoping we're gonna go for a new one.  Good luck then! Come back and see us if you have any more questions!

Solve : Can't burn CDs?

Solve : Several headsets to one XP-laptop??

Answer»

We're planning an XP pc-laptop based "studio" for school projects - live VOIP and podcasting recordings - and need to connect three pc headsets so that all users can communicate simultaneously.

The CHEAP pc headsets can't be connected to our regular Phonic mixer due to 3V out from the pc to the headset condensator mic so we wonder how to PLAY it.

Would it work, connecting three usb pc headsets through a usb hub? Anyone who has EXPERIENCE of this?

Solve : usb device driver??

Answer»

I have had a digital television usb DVBT UNIT which worked from February till June then stopped working and now will not get past installing the drivers. It shows as a usb device as soon as the computer starts up then looks for the drivers, I try to install the drivers but it stops and a message tells me it cannot install the device. It also shows in device manager with the yellow question mark, I have the original drivers and a new driver from Jetway.
I did try it on another computer and it was detected and the drivers did install, which did not help matters as it still will not work in my computer.
WinXP Pro.AMD3200 64bit running at 32bit system,ATI 9600 Radeon 256 mb,1 gb ram, 4 total 600 gb hardrives.Asus A8V Deluxe Mobo. no changes in hardware from last year.Go into device manager, update drivers, and point windows to the proper LOCATION (CDROM, floppy, folder, etc).Hi 2k_dummy,
I tried that and it was not any better, the messages are all quite similar and will not install drivers for this usb device.
The drivers are correct but somehow windows xp does not match the device with the drivers.the device manager only shows a "usb device" and no other description. I have tried in safe mode, and have tried the "drive cleaner" software. If there was a way to force xp to match the device or remove any previous reference to the device I THINK i might be on a winner, I uninstalled then WENT into the registry any removed any FILE reference to the device that I could recognize.Disconnect the USB portion of the monitor and get the video working first. Reinstall the driver software then plug up the USB.Remove the device from device manager and allow for redetection.

You copy entire link to browser, not just click on it jjjjj......Here's what I would try ....SHUT down your pc .....
open it up and physically remove the IDE ( flat ribbon cable ) from the back of the cd drive .........now reboot you pc .......let it load completely and then shut it down again. Now plug the IDE cable back into the rear of the cd drive and also check to be sure the other end of the IDE cable is FIRMLY PLUGGED into the motherboard ........
Now close up the case and start up again.....you should see the message Windows has detected new hardware.
Then in a few seconds you will see a message which will say .......new hardware has been successfully installed .

Now it should show up in My Computer and should work.

Solve : internal harddrive for external use??????????

Answer»

Hello EVEYONE!!!
I have a Sony Vaio laptop. it is an older computer but runs pretty good. I just don't have enough hard drive space. I have two hard drives for a desktop computer though and I was wondering if i could hook them up to my laptop and use them as external hard drive. (of course only want to use one)they are not external hard drives though. i dont know a lot about computers but i do know enough to get me through the process of hooking a hard drive up. if you could please help!!!!!!!!!!!! It should work with a hard drive enclosure, but these are USUALLY USB 2 or Firewire. It SOUNDS like you may have USB 1.1 on that Sony, so if it is functional and lightning speed is not essential, it should be OK.

Solve : updating my video card?

Answer»

hello there i have a dell dimension 3000 and WANT to update my VIDEO card for smoother game play.  any suggestions???Do you MEAN update,  or get another video card. If the former, go to the Dell web site, find your model and download the latest drivers.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

If the latter, check out Newegg for an appropriate price and performance PCI card. I don't believe that model has an AGP slot, only PCI. So it is not a gaming machine, BUT you mayneed to get acceptable graphics if you are not running Doom 5 or other cutting edge games.

Please keep in mind it only has a 250 watt power supply. If you have 2 hard drives and 2 optical drives you may not have enough horsepower.

THANKS that helps alot !!!!So how many other drives are there?sorry mate i wouldn'y have a bloody clue, how should i find out  I mean can you see two CDROM type drives looking at you? Is there only one hard drive in the machine?Yeah only one cd drive and yeah only one hard drive.

Solve : Kingston USB Data Traveler keyring?

Answer»

I recently obtained a Kingston USB DataTraveler 256MB flash stick, but I can not seem to figure out how to connect the keyring to the USB stick

The keyring has a small metal like ring which is connected to a metal like hollow tube and the hollow tube is, in turn, connected to a WIRE.

The instruction manual did not state how I am to connect the USB Flash stick to this strange device, could someone tell me how?can you describe the stick? Quote

can you describe the stick?

This may MAKE more sense:

I swear the bloody pictures were sharper when I MADE them!

Ive just bought one of these things myself and from what i can work out the metal loop is not for attatching to the flash stick but to a key ring. what you need to do is push the end of the cord (not the end with the metal hoop on) through the hole in the top of the stick and then put it through itself. when you pull it it should pull tight on itlself.

I hope this is usefull  harder than you'd think to explain. If my explanation does not make sense i will try again.Reading it back what i dhould have said is;

Push the strap through the hole in the stick about halfway through. then push the end of the strap with the metal bit on through the loop you have made on the other SIDE. Quote

1. Make absolutely certain that all infections are gone
2. What scanners have you used? I recommend  the following:
3. When has your problem first started?
4. Are all your fans operating?
5. What are your computer temperatures?

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Trend Micro Housecall
-- Online anti virus scanner.

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner

on the other extreme of infections such as trojans or syware, can you sea any major drive light activity when the pc is on but you are not doing anything in particular, that could show the precence of a trojan or bot.I have used an up-to-date version of Norton Antivirus and Lavasoft AdAware SE to check my system, but they aren't detecting anything abnormal. I've done ScanDisk and Defrags, but again, nothing apparently wrong.
It's a P3 with Windows 98, so it's not a new machine, however there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the temperature or fans.
It seems to be a problem with the mouse - the more I use it, the quicker the system crashes. Could there be a connection?Type scanreg/fix in the msdos prompt.......and see if there is any imoprovement??are you using ie6?am using ie6. will try your recommended action and see if there's any improvement.Loads of issues using ie6 on win9x machines......i recommend 5.5 with tools instead.......or my shadow with say firebird/firefox.......Unfortunately, that didn't make any difference. As soon as I logged back onto Windows after doing it, it froze again!Have been using IE6 for well over a year with no previous problems. I really don't think that's the root of the problem.Type dxdiag in the run box and TEST graphics it should report....if there issues.........how much ram has the pc.......what the make of the hard drive? run another spy/virus sweep.......download spysweeper from webroot......if you have not got a firewall then may you should? And what mouse are you using?I have 128mb of ram, the hard drive is 10gb, i dont know what make but its hard to check anything because it does'nt stay opporational for very long,  if its any help the pc is a Tiny.

Also the mouse is a Trekker wheel mouse but all of these devices have been working TOGETHER for a long time.

The computer seems to work fine when i disconnect the mouse, although my NAVIGATION skill without it are quite poor.

I have run dxdiag, but cannot see an option to test the graphics, the closet i can see is; test directdraw or test direct3d.

btw i am running windows 98se  Is just one ramstick? what internet connection are you using?i use blue yonder dial up, and it is just one ramstick. Are you networking this pc?? do you have a firewall?

Solve : Dual hard drive problem (?)?

Answer»

I have a HP Pavilon 752n running XP. Their was a bad volume the other day and it would no longer boot up, so I did the system recovery.  The system has
two hard disks. (Or one which is divided? not SURE, I'm clueless here.)  C: which has 52GB of space and the D:
(recovery Drive) which has 6GB of space. Currently
it's running on the recovery drive so obviously I'm
running out of space.

I know C has been formatted because there is an
enormous amount of freespace (much more than before
the recovery).  So how do I get it to boot off just
the C: drive so I can have more space.

The harddrive brand and model is Maxtor 4D060H3 if that helps.

Am I being totally ignorant? I thought the recovery
thing was pretty straight forward but now I'm really
confused.

I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me. I'm lost! You have 2 partitions on 1 drive.
You are running on c drive.
That doesn't really help. Why is it telling me that I don't have enough memory and it's SUCKING all the memory out of the recovery disk and none from the normal one? What tells you that you don't have enough memory?Several programs. Works, foxfire... when I try to preform a task  (for example.. copying some text to Works processor) says can't preform action because not enough memory. I have no additional software loaded on my system since the recovery.

When I looked at the drive. almost all the space on the recovery is taken. How do I get it to use the space on the other partitian?Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
How much RAM does it show?504 MBRe-start in safe mode & see if you can copy stuff then.It let me copy that time. But I was unable to access the net, so I couldn't  copy the exact same info as before.  But I didn't get a memory message when I went to paste it.Run both of these free scans.

Free online virus scan

Free online spyware scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/spyxposer/com/spyxposer_principal.htm

It might be the virus that sucked my memory out!  tracyg.......... It sounds like you have one hard drive ....as Fed has ALREADY suggested ..... It is a 60 gb drive and it contains a partition .... so you see two drives .......drive C: is 52 gb and drive D: is approx 6gb.
I think what has happened is you have formatted C: drive and have removed the operating system and everything else that was on there . What you must do is copy the contents of drive D onto drive C ........
Right now you have everything trying to run on 6gb of disk space .
Hope this is of some help.

dl65
The scans came BACK negative for both.  As for copying the stuff over is it really that simple? Do I just manually drag everything over or is there something else I should do.

And yes, I reformatted the drive and it was wiped clean. Since, it's only putting stuff on the D: drive.I'll sit on the fence with this for a bit DL65, hopefully I'll learn some stuff.
I've always wondered exactly what system recovery did.Either way Fed your help was much appreciated. If you hadn't started answering me when you did, I probably wouldn't have any hair left in my head.At least you have no viruses.

Solve : Erratic Behavior?

Answer»

I'd appreciate any help that anyone can provide:

The problem started slowly, and gradually got worse.

When I turn my computer on, it doesn't seem to do anything - the hard drive and CD lights come on, the fans come on, but the startup process doesn't seem to happen.  Then, after 5 - 20 minutes (if I'm lucky), it may begin the startup process (ie. the Windows XP loading screen).  However, the keyboard may or may not work, and if it does, it may only work for a while.

I've tried new keyboards, MICE, and MONITORS to rule them out (everything else like printers unplugged).  I've tried it in different outlets also to rule that out.  My laptop computer hooked up to my keyboard and monitor works in the same outlet.

I took the computer in for repair, and they found nothing since it worked perfectly fine for them.

So I took it to a friends house, where it didn't work at first, then did after a while.

Still didn't work at home.

Took it to another computer repair place, where it worked fine.

Does anyone have any ideas?  Someone suggested the power supply ... but why would the computer only not work at my house and occasionally at my friends?

(Pentium IV, 1.8 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, Win XP)

Thanks in advance.
Sounds like gremlins.

Do you have anything to risk by a reformat? Something to think about.

So it works fine everywhere else, but not at your house. And that is ALWAYS the case or it is intermittent even at your house? The supply voltage at your house may well be different to that at the computer shop or your friend's house.

You PSU (Power Supply Unit inside computer) could be 'on the edge' which would magnify any mains problems.

How does it start in safe mode? Thanks ...

I'd definitely prefer not to re-image.

If the voltage is different in my house, would a new power supply unit get my computer working again?

I can't usually get my computer to even come on, let alone try to start it in safe mode ... it's like the computer doesn't want to begin the startup processCan you 'swap' your power supply just as a test?Probably not ... It would have to be replace it and take my chance, or try something elseFrom what you have said, the only possible causes can be your mains supply, your PSU or a combination of both.
Can you run your computer off a different power point using an extension lead, maybe even from your neighbours house?

A quick QUESTION?
Aside from the location was there anything different when you tried it?
Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor? Quote

Are there any diskettes or DVDs/CDs present?

Have you tried another power cable? What exactly has the shop used to test the PC that you haven't?Try running from a UPS. You really should have one. Quote
Try running from a UPS. You really should have one.

If everyone would buy an UPS, Greenpeace would go mental.thanks ...

I'm not all that confident in what the computer repair places did ... they claimed that they ran a piece of software that does diagnostics, and it found nothing.

I'm not using a UPS, but I guess I could buy one and try it.

I'm living in the country, so it would be very difficult to run an extension cord from a neighbours house.
By the way, there are no disk / CD's in the drive, and I have tried a new power cableHave you tried resetting the CMOS?

Are there any USB hubs connected to your computer?

Measure your house voltage.  Maybe a bad transformer in your neighborhood.
Put a coathanger in the wall outlet while standing in water...NO WAIT - just kidding

The above answer about either the computer power supply or your house 's power seem to be the only logical explanations.

Solve : No Power to computer...?

Answer»

Please forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong forum as I am new to your board..I'm at a complete loss here..I had my son come over and install a new DVD writer in my HP Compaq desktop..he has installed many new hard drives in other family computers with no problem at all..tonight after taking out the DVD-Rom and replacing it with the DVD Writer he connected all the cords BACK up..power,scanner,monitor etc..now I have nothing..nada..zilch..no power at all..only a flashing green power lite..along with a green flashing light in the back of the tower which he says is the power supply light...the computer is only a year old and my older than the hills laptop isn't cutting it..do you think I need a new power supply..any help or ideas WOULD be appreciated..
I'm not well versed in the computer language but will do my best to tell you anything you may need to help me with a diagnosis..thank you in advance..Should have spanked him more often.

1. Does the computer work when you disconnect the DVD-ROM from the power supply and mainboard?
2. Where is the green flashing light? Was this present during the installation as well?It could be that he accidentally nudged the power cable out its socket in the motherboard.
Power of the computer, disconnect the mains cable from the back and unscrew the side panel lookong at the pc from the front this is most likely to be the left sideand have a look for a small white plug with approximatly 20 wires attached near the top of the motherboard, if its loose push it back into its socket. Its UNLIKELY you will get an electric shock and the plug and socket are really the only ones which can match. Be carefule not to dislodge any other plugs or components. Quote

No..he took it out and put the DVD-Rom back in and still nothing..

The flashing greenlight  is the power button bulb..another green light is flashng on top of the back of the tower. No..the greenlight was not flashing during installation..there was no cords connected to it at that time..it was turn off and disconnected completely before installation..

He did that last night..he took out the DVD burner and put back in the original DVD Rom..the way everything was before he did anything..and we got the exact same result..nothing.. the fan doesn't work either..no signal to monitor..nothing from the tower at all other than the blinking lights..I willl see if he can come over tonight and check the connections to the motherboard as you requested..you all are the best..if all else fails I guess it goes to the shop..which I just dread as I know it will be gone forever..that's why I had him do this for me to begin with..it was in the shop once to upgrade the memory and they had the thing 2 weeks..

Again...thank you Merlin...I will tell have him do as you suggested and let you know the out come..

As my grandson says.."Peace Out"
You might try this, because almost the same thing happened to me when i installed my sisters cd burner.  Check and make sure that the wire that runs from the power on button is still connected to the motherboard.  Sometimes it the simple things..........How much Memory do you have, if you have 2 sticks try taken one out and try restarting your computer to test for faulty memory. if that dont work swap them around and try rebooting again.

One more thing that happened to me with blinking lights, but im not sure it applys here as im not certain what is working in your computer, was i had a problem with my Graphics card. The driver had become CORRUPT and the only way i was able to start my computer was to install an old Graphics card. After that i was able to reinstall the one i had in.

Solve : Help on replacing motherboard.?

Answer»

Hi all, I need to replace my current motherboard with one that has an AGP slot or a PCI E 16x slot.. This is my current computer...

So I'm guessing I need a mobo thats compatible with..
-Pentium 4
-PC3200 DDR2 ram
-socket ?

I also probably will need a new case and PSU, around 400 watts.. Can anyone reccomend me with any mobos from Newegg? I'm horrible at this type of stuff..Are you going to assemble this or are we?   I'll read up on stuff on now to assemble, I'll probably try it on my other older computer and see what goes where, but I needed someone to pick out some possible motherboards that are compliant with the specs of my current computer..Pay hp website a visit for upgrading......i hate it  when pcs byte the dust....I don't think it died Merlin, they were just too stingy to put an AGP slot in it.
How OLD is it TN2COOL, not that old surely? It's actually very good, the only thing is lacking is a PCI E or AGP slot.. I was planning to scrap the processor and hard DRIVE, cd DRIVES, and ram to a new motherboard and case.

The processor is 3.0 ghz (prescott)
and my ram is PC3200 DDR2 ram (I'm assuming its a good type of ram, due to the "2" being after the DDR.
my hard drive is a 200 gig, so thats GREAT also..

I was looking at some motherboards that seem compliant with what I have, I'll post some links later...

So is it hard if I were to TRANSFER that stuff over? Am I missing anything important here?I have been more than happy with my Asus mobo.
*just saying*
BTW, get a quality PSU, not a no-name crappy one. What specs Fed?Mine is a P4P800 Deluxe, a couple of years old now.

If you have the space get a large case even if you have no intention of using the spare bays. It's much better for heat reduction.

Solve : Opening club 2460 PB system case?

Answer»

I have a packard bell Club 2460 computer, and would very much like to see the inside.

However, its tighter than fort Knox. I unscrewed everything unscreweable, and applied ENOUGH pressure on the CASE doors and top that should normally allow them to come off, but they will not budge.

There are no instructions on the casing. What do I do to open it?
well...FRIEND...It may be possible that there some clips that make it so tight. There is a type of clip which is normally PRESENT in CD Drives. To open them, we just have to press it inside with the help of screw driver. May be such type of clips are there.
Okay take care.

Depends on what you use the computer for.

Install as much RAM as your mainboard is capable of if:

You play games
You edit photos/videos
You MULTITASK with demanding programs

If you can install more than one gigabyte, do not bother. The DIFFERENCE between 1024MB and 2048MB RAM are negligible for most home users. Quote

Here's my opinion ......
If you not using it online......
would it be worth it ..... The programs you use would probably load a little faster .

Is it a waste of money ........Not really , because you can always remove it and use it in another PC ....given it uses the same TYPE of Ram.

Will it damage your computer.........No ......

Would I do it ?........If the pc is reasonablely fast ( the processor ) and I was going to use it on-line than Yes otherwise I'd LEAVE it as is .......

well i dont know. For 512megs i payed £45 so for a 256meg strip it would only be around £20.

Solve : Computer Hard Drive Bad???

Answer»

After my computer has been on a while the moniter gets the wavy lines and I can not do anything. I have tried reformating...but did not work???  Is this a bad hard drive? If it is a monitor problem, I would start by checking the monitor (hook it to another computer) and then CHECK the video adapter (hook another monitor to it). Do either of these point to one or the other as the bad component?

Are the video drivers correct for the adapter? By the WAY what kind of adapter, monitor and computer is it? (Info helps get appropriate responses.)

A hard drive is the last place I would look for a solution.
It is a Dell,  with a pentium 4 cpu 1500mhz.. I am not sure about the moniter it is a dell as WELL the one that came with it, and I have tried CHANGING moniters..So what is the make and model number of the computer and monitor. (You can find that on the cases!)

Have you changed any settings?

You said you tried changing monitors.....and.......what happened?

The monitor you had worked fine with another computer, or another monitor worked fine on this computer, or what?

We're getting closer.....   Sorry I am new at this...

I changed moniters on the computer I am having problems with and the same problem happened.

I then put the moniter from the bad computer on a good computer and the moniter worked fine.

The thing is if I leave the computer shut down for  a week or so, it will start up just fine....then after a day of playing around on it off and on it starts the FUNNY lines again.  Then will not start up normal again.

I have not changed any settings that I am aware of.

The model number for the moniter is M991...So it is a problem with the graphics adapter (most like) on the bad computer. What is the model number (such as Dimension 4200, etc.) so we can see what is in there? Can you go to Settings/Control Panel / System and double click the "display adapter" button and tell us what it says?Tammy Zahradka......  Try uninstalling your vid card and then reinstalling it ..and see how things are .

dl65  Everyone should read this.

Solve : Hard drive disappearing.?

Answer»

Hi all.
I am new here and hope that someone can help me with this problem that has been plagueing me FOREVER.  One of my computers always drops a hard drive.  It is on an ABIT KR7A Raid motherboard.  Now what happens  is after computer has been shut down, upon reboot the secondary slave hard drive is gone.  I have to go into the bios and redetect it, and then it will be back and working fine until the computer is shut down again.
Now what I've done to try to fix this so far:

2 hard drives on one IDE cable.
2 CD ROM/burner on another IDE cable.

1.  Changed Ide Cable.  Works fine for about a week and then it starts dropping out again.    curious.
2.  Upgraded the bios.  works fine for about a week and then starts dropping out again.  curious again.
3.  INSTALLED new Via drivers.  Worked fine for about a month or so, then started dropping out again.
4.  Swapped the Hard drives and CD ROM/burner on the motherboard IDE ports.  Worked fine for a while.

Now it's to the point that even going into the bios and redetecting the hard drive doesn't bring it back.  It shows up as a Maxtor, but instead of showing the number it shows  Maxtor  DRACO.
At my wits end, I popped out the CMOS battery and it came back fine.  Then I rebooted the computer and it disappeared again without being able to fix this by going into the bios.  Anyone have ANY ideas on what this may be.  It is driving me insane.

Thanks in advance for your help.   It doesn't make any sense to me, either.  I suggest you POST this ISSUE here.Ok.  Thanks. I will try that.  Hopefully someone here might have an ANSWER.  It's like a freaky gremilin I've never seen before. The first thing I'd do is put a new battery in it.
Next I'd re-seat all the cables.
Don't ask me why.  I have reseated all the cables quite a few times including the power source.  Tomorrow I will buy a new battery.  If it is not that I just don't know.

thanks.

Take it back to whoever "repaired" it and ask these QUESTIONS of him. I don't know what he did, or if everything was hooked up correctly.

Is it a repaired (soldered) motherboard? Generally repaired MB's are a problem.

I have been having this problem for awhile and now it wont do anything.  I have a emachine and I try to power it on and it just stays on for less than a second and the blue light goes off and hit it again and it does nothing until i unplug it for awhile.  Please help me if you can. Please if you KNOW anything about this please let me know.

SmirkAnd it is what model? And what happened right before it quit working? And how old is it? And how long is "awhile" that it has not been functioning? And have you tried opening the case to make sure nothings loose, checking a new power supply, or googled to see if a standard ATX power supply would fit?

Let us have a clue so we can offer a valid suggestion. Just a little too vague so far.

Model EMachine T3085

I put an extra hard drive in

Now it is out.

1 yr old

This morning it wouldnt boot. The light stay on for a splite second and goes off and makes a tick sound when you push the power button.

it has a 300 watt power supply

Thanks for helping a knob like me

SmirkSo the most likely things (though not all) are:

Bad Power Supply

Bad Ram

Defective cooling SYSTEM for CPU

Suggestions would be:

Trying another power supply that you know works, just to be ABLE to test it.

Running Memtest on the RAM

Open case and see if CPU fan is spinning happily away and see if everything else looks OK in there. Any strange odors or GLOWING?

That will help us along.

Solve : Keyboard numpad wont work!?

My numpad will not work on my keyboard...I have tried everything that I know.  Have changed keyboards...cant seem to figure this out....

Help...Have you PRESSED NumLock? Have you checked to see if it is turned off in the BIOS? Has it EVER worked? If so, when did it quit and under what circumstances?

There is no magic information without KNOWING just a little history of the problem.   Yes the numpad has worked before...I have checked the BIOS.

Under what circumstances I am not sure, ONE day I just noticed it was not working and my children do use my computer.

I wonder if anyone can help me? I bought a Genius KB-21e keyboard and although I've  installed it, the INTERNET, office and  multimedia keys won't work.  I thought there might be a problem with the driver software CD, so I downloaded a driver from the maker's site.     Now I've got a file in Applications saying it's the driver, but still NOTHING happens.   What should I do next?  I'm on a home PC with ME

Any ideas welcome! Are the drivers COMPATIBLE with ME?

Solve : Monitor darkening?

Answer»

Hello,

I have noticed my monitor starting to darken recently. I currently have the brightness all the way up and contrast set to the most beneficial setting. I have an older 21" NEC MultiSync 6FG monitor. Does this darkening mean that the monitor is starting to die? Is there anything I can do to restore the monitor to proper working order. I use the monitor for work it is on EVERYDAY for 8 to 10 hours. There are also a couple of dark curved spots near the bottom corners and one in the upper right. These have also STARTED to get worse recently. In all probability it is on the verge of giving up the ghost. You can have it repaired or replace it. Some TV repair SHOPS will repair monitors and some will not. Won't hurt to check around.Yep, it sounds LIKE it's heading south. Unfortunately the repair is usually more than the cost of a new one in our disposable society.   :-/

Solve : Instant power off?

Answer»

My computer shut off without warning.  It WILL NOT turn back on.   Is this the power supply FAILURE?  I would think that if it were heat related, it would turn back on.  I've checked all the cables and outlets, and have not blown a fuse.

Puzzled.

If its completley dead (no FANS or anything running) then if i was you i would first check the power supply. Have you got another computer to test it in. If you find it isnt that i would next LOOK at the cpu Heatsink and fan.Chris:

Could be the power supply.  First, test the ELECTRICAL outlet by plugging a lamp into the socket.

Power supplies have FUSES that are designed to blow if your system is demanding too much power or if your home experiences a power surge.  Don't replace the power supply unless you know what you are doing.  If you do replace it, be sure to unplug the computer, first.

If replacing the power supply does not fix the problem, you may have to replace the motherboard.  Check the motherboard for any signs of damage (for example, discolored or cracked chipsets).

Do you hear any sound at all or see any other signs of "life" when you press the power switch?

Was it smoking, glowing, or anything unusual?

Anything at all?

Solve : Failing Video card? or something else?

Answer»

Hi there

Not sure if this is a hardware, software or virus issue.

Every now and then my computer hangs for no particular reason.

it doesn't seem to relate to any specific software or hardware i'm using and I can tell when it's going to hang because just before it happens i GET single pixel lines appearing on the screen in various colours.

This might suggest that it is a display problem.

However, when i reboot, some of the characters displayed in the boot messages have been transposed with other letters so that they display gobbledegook.

My display drivers don't load and windows can only display 16 colours.

When i reboot again the gobbledegook gets worse and there can be chasing odd letters all over the screen.

if i continue to reboot, just as quickly the boot messages return to normal and i am able to load windows with no problem restoring the display drivers.

ok, so a virus then.

i tried reformatting my hard disk and REINSTALLED Windows, but the problem remains as before.

Could this be a boot sector virus?
Or a problem with the BIOS or Athlon chip?
Or what about a FAILING video card?

Any help would be appreciated because i cannot find anything on the web relating to these specific symptoms alone.

thanksDid you try updating your video card driver? If so then try taking out the video card and putting it back in. Might be because your video card is loose or something. When my video card was loose i had this green line that goes right through my screen and black boxes. Try it out. I never heard of a video card failing. it only failing if 1. It crashes all of a sudden. ie. The screen freezes and when you start hearing beeps with nothing on screen that means your video card is deadThe card has always worked fine with the drivers supplied so i reloaded the original drivers after reformatting my hard disk.

i'll try taking it out and putting it back in, but what is causing the corrupted boot messsages?Did you try to reset your motherboard settings? You can do this by unplugging the power and removing the LITTLE battery in the computer for about 10 sec. then put it back in. THis should reset your motherboard back to the default settings.Do i need to back any settings up before i do this? No, this is your COMOS setup. You know when you have to hit Delete or F1 etc.. to enter sytem setup in BIOS. that is what it does it just resets it for you. Quote

Hi there

Not sure if this is a hardware, software or virus issue.

When in doubt boot with a Linux LiveCD (available for free) and see if the problems persist. If they do - hardware, If they don't software. If you run a temp >102 - virus.

Actually, If you reformatted and it persists, not virus. Quote
However, when i reboot, some of the characters displayed in the boot messages have been transposed with other letters so that they display gobbledegook.

If this is in the POST screen then it will make no difference what OS is installed.
Did you re-seat your video card yet?

Tell him to read up on TCP/IP and computer security and stop getting himself banned from websites.

I NEVER get banned from websites. You cant be tracked. Well you can if ebay look at all the IPs which i doubt they do.

I don't recommend bailing him out. let him find out the hard way.

At the very least, you may be traced back to your Internet service provider, who may be contacted.  Those who administer your ISP may then provide your identity to those who contact them.

Solve : Continuous Restart?

My computer will start up for about a minute then shutdown on its on and start to restart.  Then it will restart on its own again and again USUALLY not even getting to Windows.  Then sometimes it will restart with the lights from the DVD-ROM and DVD-RW player on, but the power light is not on and the monitor won't display anything.  I can unplug the power cord, and plug it back in and it will start doing the same THING.  Eventually I can unplug it and plug it back in and the power light comes on and it will get to Windows for about a minute and then STARTS restarting on its own again.  I think it may be a power supply problem.  If anyone can help I would appreciate it.More INFORMATION needed.Info link:>http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htmMy computer is a home-built (not by myself, so I don't know a lot about it) it has a 1 Ghz AMD Athalon processor and Windows ME.  And my main problem is getting it to stay on and not restart, if I turn it on and off enough times I can get it to start, but only for a minute. Can you start in safe mode?I'm having a similar problem.
I took my RAM and video cards out to swap into my brothers computer to play some network games, but it proved to be too much hassle. So i put everything back in and it seemed fine.

I've tried safe mode, last known good config, every kind of booting procedure, booting from the win cd, evertime it tries to load windows in any form, it resets.
I've tried running my hard drive in another computer and my windows desktop loads fine, i've tried DIFFERENT video cards and power supplies and i get the same result every time. I've tried resetting the bios, same thing.

Solve : computer turns on and then immediately off?

Answer»

just built a new system, 370 watt psu. all was working great for like 2 days continuously and then came home and found it turned off. so i turned it back on and it immediatly turned back off, before MONITOR lit up or bios appeared. normally i would think overheating or BAD psu, but it was running great continuously for 2 days! any ideas?I think your diagnoses are the most likely. Try reseating every component and try it again. Do you have another working power supply you could test with after that?A fan could have FAILED in the meantime.

Inspect all hardware.it seems to be working again now so i'm gonna watch it in the mean time. all the fans appear operational. i'm tempted to rule out overheating b/c if that were the case then i think playing processor intensive games like doom 3 and what not would KILL it rather than idle. as for psu, its an antec truepower which i believe are reliable, but i'm not ruling that out yet. if it dies again i'll try a new psu. if any other ideas... let me know! thanks!Could be a power brownout in your area.

Solve : Format my Compaq Presario 5060???

Answer»

Hi!
I want to format the hard drive on my Compaq Presario 5060 but I'm not sure on HOW to do it.
In other words, I want to remove every file that ever existed on my hard drive. Nowadays the computer is SOOOO slow and makes sounds whenever it's working, maybe because we've installed Windows 98 over and over again whenever it would go nuts and we've also downloaded very big files as movies and such.

I don't want to use Fdisk so I've read about this other program called "Morgud's Erasure Suite (MES)"...but I don't know if it works on my computer.

What is the best program to use? I've never done this before so I want to know what I should do instead of taking a wild guess and maybe mess up the computer more.

I appriciate if anyone please could help me.Do the following:

  • Download a BOOTABLE diskette from this location
  • Create a bootable diskette
  • Insert Diskette
  • Set FDD as first boot device
  • Choose to boot with CD-ROM Support
  • Type Format C: in A: prompt.

I don't know what Morgud's Erasure Suite" is, and I'm not sure I want to. Fdisk and Format are the only commands you need, but first answer the question about WHAT are you going to restore with - a Windows 98 CD or the Compaq Restore CD. You will want to note your hardware for driver searches first. (Trust me, I've done Presarios MANY times!)It's me again, thanks for all the help.

Raptor & Computer_Commando (CC I liked the way you replied!):
I don't want to use Fdisk cause I read a lot about that it doesn't take away all the information on your harddrive and it can still be recovered. Look at http://www.unh.edu/tech-services/csc/comdisp.html to learn more.

I want to completely wipe and erase everything out so the hard drive is like new, fresh and clean like it was the first TIME it was ever used. I found it in english and now I know what it's called...to zero out a hard drive. NOT format it. That's what I want to do. So now what?

The only thing that happens is that windows 98 lays itself on top of itself and that's not good.

Should have that sooner.

Fdisk does not erase information. It allows you to create new partitions. The format command causes Windows to stop seeing the files.

Destroying all data on a HDD means you have to use special software. This software can often be obtained from the HDD manufacturer. This will take several runs to be certain that no home user can retrieve software. Quote

Have you damaged the mainboard or PS/2 CONNECTOR?its a pc some ONE gave me, far as i know it was a fault that occurred out of the blue.  Have looked at main board and there is no signs od physical damageIf the PS2 mouse port is damaged, you can get a PS2 to serial adapter and hook the mouse up to the serial port. It might require a different driver, but windows should detect and install a generic driver for it.check the bios setup.......

Solve : My computer seems to be having electrical problems?

Answer»

I would deeply appreciate It if somone read the first two paragraphs(my story) and tried to help me figure this THING out.

Last night my computer was fine, just as good as usual. This morning I turned it on and conducted some chores. When I came back to my computer I noticed that my monitor was in "auto-off" mode, meaning that it wasnt getting information from the computer and automatically shut off. So I'm like *censored*, and I restart my computer and it starts working fine. Then I start playing some music, and I notice that my speakers are working up a very ANNOYING buzz noise. The buzz gets louder and louder until im convinced they are broken(I had the same speakers before, and they broke unexpectedly as well). So I goof around on desktop looking for any weird settings that might be enabled and my screen goes black and reads "auto-off mode in 5 seconds", indicating that the monitor stopped recieving signals from the *censored* computer. So I turn the computer off, then I turn it back on but only the front light goes on, not the fan, or hardrive etc...

So now Im really aggrivated. I open the computer and take a look inside for burnt wires etc... and find nothing. I leave It open though and start It up again, I notice that the fan turns on but the hardrive dosnt make the quiet funny noise it makes when its loading up the computer. So again I shut It off and turn It back on. The front light goes on, the fan goes on, I can hear the hardrive and I notice the ethernet light blinking (indicating that it's recieving a signal) in the back of my computer. So I go on desktop again and everything is working fine for about 1 minute until everything shuts off except the fan and the front light on the computer. I noticed the hardrive wasnt making the sound and the ethernet light in the back wasnt blinking.

Thus, whatever the problem is, It is failing to send electricity to certain parts of the computer randomly. I have the feeling it might be my power supply unit, however I have no idea what mine looks like, where It is, or what one I have right now.

PLEASE any help is greatly appreciated.list components ......in this pc......may help.......

Oh and 1 more question. I know I'll be touching just about every part of my computer while installing the PSU, so would rubber kitchen cleaning gloves work well to prevent a static discharge?

Not necessary. Just unplug the power and modem, printer/scanner, etc. hold the bare metal casing with your left hand and hold the on button depressed for ten seconds to equalise any static emf across the board.

It should then be OK to work with bare hands. Use a wrist strap if usure. (Ask the PC shop.)

If you click the link below and download the .pdf file you'll see the power supply unit marked clearly. Best to take it out and take it with you, maybe they can test it for you.

You'll also find a link which will allow you to guage the amount of wattage you actually need from a PSU.
More>http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/Update: I replaced the PSU and my computer turns on and works fine, as normal.  Yet the only problem is that the sound is messed up. No speakers will work on the computer, and at the boot screen the speakers beep once.  Usually the motherboard does that?

When I go into winamp, it gives me an error when I hit "play":

"waveOUt  output v2.0.2a error

Another program is using your soundcard. Please change output device (in wavOut plug-in configuration), switch to DirectSound output (in Winamp preferences / plug-ins / output) or get a soundcard which can play multiple streams.

Error code: 4
Windows error message:
'The specified device is already in use. Wait until it is free, and then try again'"

Also, when I initially booted up with the new PSU, I got a seemingly unrelated USB 'power usage' error message in the lower right, about too much power being sent to one USB port or something.  I don't have any USB devices connected, except a mouse that is using the USB->PS/2 converter.

I looked in the BIOS and the onboard sound is enabled. No devices show up in device manager, maybe because I am using integrated sound, maybe not.  When I enter the sound settings it states: "No audio device" next to the speaker icon.

Thanks for your time,
N. Johnson.  error:

"Power Surge on Hub Port
A USB device has malfuntioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port.  You should disconnect the device.

The location of the device is SHOWN in bold type.

+ USB Root Hub (6 ports)

Recommendation--
To reenable the port, disconnect the HARDWARE and click Reset. If you click Close, the port will no longer function."

That's the error, but no device is connected. Sound is still not working.

Thanks again,

Solve : which psu??

Answer»

i have and old 1.2 ghz
i have 2 different psu's it can run
both atx
one is 160w
and the other is 350 but the 350's -12v rail runs at 11.6v

which one should i use?160 w is for lightbulbs.

Use the other for now. Have you tried it?i have tryed them both(160 came in it)
i was just wondering if the -11.6v rail is to wory about?i also found a site that trys to predict power consumptions
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/

it sez i need about 217w

but the computer came with a 160
meaning that psu is running at allmost full burn
wont it burn out soon

which is beeter an unser powered power SUPLY or a good psu that has a bad rail   (some one told me that rail is for serial  is it true?)Big is best.kingneo......

Perhaps y'all cuud splain zactly what a rail is.
Izz been a sparks for a long time and I've ain't  never herd  the output of a power supply refered to ...as a rail ....that is what your REFERING to isn't it .
As FED ,has already POINTED out a larger wattage PSU is better ...... however have you metered the other output voltages of the 350 Watt PSU ?  Is the 350 Watt psu a new unit or is it used ?

Let us know

WARNING : Computer Ebonics

USER IGNORED!a rail is the type of power
so a psu has a
+12v rail
-12v rail
3.3v rail
5v rail

acording to the bios the running voltages are
160w
vcore = 1.4
+3.3 = 3.2
5v = 5
+12 = 12.5-12.6
-12 = 12.3-12.4

350w
vcore = 1.4
+3.3 = 3.2
5v = 5
+12 = 12.5-12.6
-12 = 11.7-11.6

If system performance is not a priority, you can try the 350 watt.

To get an exact measurement of the voltages, use a Multimeter.so the 160 will burn out sooner
and the 350 will make the computer run slower?
Neither statements were ever made.

1. so the 160 will burn out sooner
2.the 350 will make the computer run slower?

1. It may simply shut down your system each time you boot and place some strain on the computer.
2. If the PSU is weak, so will the hardware be. Hardware needs power. See the connection? The voltages on the 350 look fine. You will not ever plug anything into the -12V. All rails should be +/- 5% and they are all OK.  You should not have any problems with the 350.What other components are used.....? Quote

You need more power the more components are added that use that power - a second hard drive, a high end graphics card, 2 CD drives, etc. It may not fuinction with the 160, especially if it is failing, the 350 provides more power if you need it (and ASSUMING it is a good component.)
