Solve : Windows XP safely remove USB hardware?

Answer»

When I click once on the Safely REMOVE (USB)device I am given a list of devices that are currently connected.

This list is currently using the format USB-device for mass storage - station(G:) remove safely (Freely translated). I would like it to report the name of the drive currently connected as OPPOSED to the station letter.

How do I MAKE it so?The events log will list it ......but when you remove it from the list.....windows will reallocate a IRQ for it any way....That does not answer my question.

I would like to have the name of the device connected to be shown rather than only the drive station when I click once on the safely remove hardware icon in my taskbar.

Solve : Cyclic Redundancy Error?

Answer»

I get this 'Cyclic Redundancy Check' error when attempting to COPY MP3 FILES to my computer from a CD-R disc. However, I burned the CD-R disc as a data disc, and I THINK that is the partial cause of the problem.

How do I recover the files now? I tried using CDCheck software, and USED their Recover option but it merely froze every time and the DVD/CD-RW drive kept on making a grinding sound.Cyclic Redundancy Check or CRC errorCyclic Redundancy Error means simply ehough that the item saved is greater or lesser than tha actual item size count,
it could be a scratch on the cd itself or a hicup during the burning process.

Solve : Computer can't cope on network?

Answer»

Hello All.

Well its uni time again and as per usual the questions from me are going to start flooding in.

My main PROBLEM at the moment is that my computer crashes every 5 minutes or so. It seems to happen more when I am connected to the University network (if you need more info. about the network let me know and I will look it up).

Sometimes the comp just goes BLACK, makes a sound like its gunna restart and then the screen goes black and it doesnt restart or turn off, both lights (on monitor and tower) stay green and I have to turn the computer off manually and then on again and scan DISK starts etc...

Then sometimes my screen clicks off and it says "bad signal" and then at other times it just does a bog standard crash, gives up the ghost and restarts itself!

I have checked that all the wires are securely in place and have virus checked and spybotted it and everything is CLEAR.

Any ADVICE as always is greatly appreciated.

Solve : DVD drive & Sound Distortion?

Answer»

Hi There...
Recently my CD/DVD drive has been running much slower than usual.. To the point that it won't burn a CD or DVD because it causes the data to skip.
It use to run up to 9000kb/s.. now it won't EXCEED 3000kb/s... And whenever it hits 3000k's my motherboard starts BEEPING..
But also, whenever I am using a CD or DVD in my computer, whether it be audio, video, data.. My audio sounds distorted and scrambles.. But only when I'm using a disk...
I'm thinking my CD/DVD might be on it's way out... Or somehow my processor can't handle it...
Does anyone have any ideas?

Solve : My harddrive is not loading???

Answer»

Uhh, last night I shut down my computer, but apparently it froze and there was nothing i could do except manually shut it off. I didn't know it froze until this morning, though. Now, when I turned my computer back on and tried to open up something that was on me E drive, it said "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'World of Warcraft.Ink (or any other thing on the E drive) REFERS to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is AVAILABLE, then try again."

So I thoought my shortcut wasnt working at first (I only tried one game) so I open up My Computer and WHAT?! My E drive isn't there. I restarted my computer and the same thing happens. Help! I have no idea what to do =(Is this a separate hard drive or just a different partition on an EXISTING hard drive? (E could be EITHER.)

Solve : HDD close to PC speaker dangerous??

Answer»

I am working inside a Q-tec case and noticed that the PC speaker is alarmingly close to the HDD mounting cage. If I were to MOUNT two HDDs, the second one would be LITTLE more than a centimeter (half an inch) away from the PC speaker.

The primary HDD would be approximately 4 centimeters away. (2". Give or take)

Should I be worried? Is the PC speaker powerful enough to interfere with the HDD? It seems to be a rather WEAK magnet, but I do not want to take any risks. There is some info on this subject http://http://www.dansdata.com/io014.htmhttp://

TRY this
Gray:

Your PC and PS2 must have the same default gateway, the same subnet mask, and an IP address that begins with the same numbers but ends in different numbers  before they can talk to one another.

To check the default gateway, IP address, and subnet mask of your PC and PS2, do this:

1. Click Start > Run
2. In the run box, type CMD and press the Enter key
3. In the CMD window, type IPCONFIG /ALL and press the Enter key.
4. Write down the IP address and the subnet mask (they will each be four sets of three numbers separated by periods)
5. Let us know what these are
6. Find out the default gateway, IP address and subnet mask on the PS2 (check the PS2 manual to see how to check this)
7. Write them down and let us know what they are

We will tell you what to do next.

Best regards,

If you are *sure* the IP address and subnet mask and default gateway is correct for each, then try disabling any firewall.

For example, if you have Windows XP, disable the Windows firewall by opening the firewall applet in the Control Panel.

Solve : 0271 error (check date & time)?

Answer»

Hello:

I'm trying to restore an older HP computer for fun, but as it boots the system will give me 2 short beeps and then will proceed to give me an error 0271 Check date and time!  I think this has something to do with the bios but I can't even get into the bios to fix it.  Can any one please help?Unplug the machine from the power supply. MAKE sure you are properly grounded and replace the CMOS battery: it's about the size of a dime and can be bought just about any comp. store/Radio Shack etc.  #CR 2032 part number.
While you have the case off check for any dust bunnies/dirt etc. You can blow these out with a can of compressed air.

patio. Newlman:

Some systems have the battery hard wired or soldered to the MOTHERBOARD.  If this is the case, you may have to take it to a repair shop to have it REMOVED and have a new one soldered in its place.

=====================================

Patio:

Good to see a new face here at the forum!

With some old machines it is not necessarily the CMOS battery but the BIOS itself that can't handle the date. If you can get to a DOS prompt, just use the "time" and "date" commands to set them. If the BIOS is not year 2k compatable, you have to do this every time you turn the machine off and on again.Yep!

For help doing this, at the COMMAND prompt, type

time /?

and type

date /?

Docwith real DOS you can type time and then enter any changes if needed. same thing for date.Thanx for the GREETING, pcdoc !

Solve : Problem with upgrade and/or BIOS...?

Answer»

How do I get modem to work?
Hello all!
I'm helping out a friend that was having pc trouble. He has a HP Pav 7320. I used the First Aid Recovery disk and it ERASED everthing and reinstalled the original Win95. I then used his WIN98 upgrade disk. Here's the problem. I'm trying to get online to Windows Update but can't cuz the modem is having a problem I've never encountered. Under the Communications Port Properties which had an exclamation next to it it SAYS under the DEVICE Status ....
This device is disabled because the BIOS for the device did not give it an resources. (Code 29). You must enable the device in the BIOS. See your hardware documentiation for details ,or contact your computer manuf. to get an updated bios.

After running Belarc it seems he has an Intel RU430HX AA665095-501. The BIOS is also Intel 1.00.03.DL0L.11/15/96.
One other thing I've noticed is that under the driver files (3 of them) one has this right after one of them [vcomm.vxd].
I've heard something about having driver files with brackets around them and it wasn't anything good but my memory doesn't serve me quite well enough to recall just what that was. Is this any thing significant?

My problem is that I haven't an idea on what to do next. Can anyone help out here, please??? I'd be most grateful.
Thanks so much and may God bless,
Peter

what it is doing now is it makes all the normal sounds (harddive reading, fans moving, etc) however nothing shows up on the moniter i have TRIED it on different moniters and it does the same thing  i have also tried removing the new video card in hopes that it would ENABLE the onboard one  but even that did nothing. also the keyboard lights do not turn on when it's plugged in and the cooling fan on the new video card does not move. could it be a mother board issue?

either way i'm out of ideas and am in desperate need of helpRemove the new video card and perform a "hard CMOS reset".  Consult manual how to do this.  This should enable onboard video.  If this works, then try installing the new video card.  If it dies again, the 5200 card is dead.Motherboard does not like the ram?the ram has been in there for a few months now   Quote

Solve : Sharing an internet connection - question?

Answer»

Hey, not sure if this is the right forum...but anyway...

I share a web connection with another PC in the house. We are both connected via ONE cable between the PC's (Mine is connected like a phone cable which runs to a seperate BOX that is in the same room as the other COMPUTER, so it's not directly connected to the other pc.)

My question, which is probably stupid to someone who knows about PC's:

Can INFORMATION between the two pc's be exchanged without your knowledge? For example, can files on my PC be viewed on the other PC?

Thanks.Depends if file sharing is enabled, and how it is setup. Yes, it is VERY possible.Any ideas how to find out if file sharing is enabled?

Thanks. When you go to my computer, look at the drive icon- if it has a hand holding it is is shared. You can also right click on the drives and view the properties it should tell you if it is shared. In windows XP is you look in the folder called shared documents it should show you what is shared - like a printer etc.

Solve : Is my CD-RW drive broken??

Answer»

Quite a while ago I wrote some CDs which were 1x-4X discs, but I'm sure the CD-R drive on the computer is 10x-24x (or something along those lines). Since writing these 1x-4x CDs Nero and other CD writing programs seem to think the maximum speed the drive can WRITE at is 4x. Anyone know how to switch it back to the old settings? Because at the moment it can't write anything!

Anyone have any ideas? What about uninstalling and then reinstalling the program? Does the drive work OK otherwise?Yes I could do that - but is there a way of clicking it back to the speed it should be in?When it reinstalls it may set itself up correctly. Sometimes the simplest solutions work.

If not, let us know anad we'll go from there......Have you set nero to burn a DVD instead of a cdrom. Its just DVDs burn at 4x. did you buy cd disks that write at higher speeds. Can anyone recommend me a writing/burning PROGRAMME?
Are you USING NERO? If so did you disable the "automatically scan for maximum speed"? It will write very slowly since before the write it keeps things into memory. Are you using CD-RW. Did you download there latest version online?Mei....

First of all when you talk about 1X or 4X you are talking about a DVD not a cd ....there is a big differance.
Typically a blank cd DISK will handle a write speed of from 1X to 48X ........depending on your cd rom ....A DVD on the other hand is differant animal .

Solve : Laptop Monitor Discolored and Small?

Answer»

My laptop's LCD screen is stuck in 4 bit color and at 640x480 resolution (with a 2-3 inch black border around the whole screen). I have tried the NORMAL way of adjusting this (right click on the desktop and go to 'Settings') but after clicking 'Apply' or 'OK', the computer gives me the Blue Screen of Death for half-a-second, then shuts down...

This all started happening after I adjusted the settings from dual monitors to just the LCD screen,  unplugged my 2nd monitor, then after realizing I still needed to use the 2nd monitor, plugged it back in again... At first, the LCD screen went to 640x480 res but at full screen, which has happened before, and I've fixed it... I believe I tried to fix it via the method described above and it crashed... Then after booting up again, it displayed the 4 bit and the 640x480 with the black border...

Needless to say, I'm pretty frustrated... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Does the blue screen of death have an ERROR message displayed on it? if so, what does it say?The computer restarts before I can read it... I changed the settings so when the blue screen happens, the computer won't restart (directions on how to do that found on this site, thanks)... I guess I'll crash my computer to see what it says... Give me a few...Alright, so...

The Blue Screen says:

Why Does S-Video Not Work?

To use S-Video, resolution must be set to 800x600 or 640x480.

S-Video will not be active after a REBOOT.  You will need to re-enable it to use it.

S-Video will ALSO be disabled after the UNIT resumes from hibernation, and is not accessible using the Fn+F5 toggle switch.

Change TV input to "video in".  Look through the TV manual.
Kellee

I connect my laptop to the TV with a s-video cable.

The setting on the TV set for our TVs is AV2 ... NOT a "channel".

Look for the AV settings on your TV controller.  You will have to go through those.

Solve : Computer freezing when coming out of Stand By?

Answer»

Hello,

I bought my computer from a local reseller (MDG) almost exactly one year ago and it had been working fine up until very recently, when I moved apartments.

Presently, my computer will occasionally FREEZE and become non-responsive to any key input, requiring a reboot and a loss of all unsaved data.  I have noticed that the instances of ‘freezing’ come in two distinct flavours: (1) When bringing the computer out of ‘STAND By’ mode, the computer will whirl up, however the monitor will not automatically turn on in response to an input signal, and no key strokes will register.  As well, the restart/power soft buttons on my tower will not respond to single pushes, so the only way to restart the system is to hold the power button down for five seconds and then turn it back on for a hard boot.  (2) Soon after brining the computer out of ‘Stand By’ mode or soon after starting the computer up from rest (usually less than 2 minutes later), the system will freeze and become non-responsive.  In this case, the system does respond to a restart via the buttons on the tower.  In both circumstances, the system has not been on for a long time, so I don’t think that it’s overheating.  Usually, once it has been on for 5 or so minutes, I know that I’m in the clear, as it likely won’t shut down during my work.  I realize that these situations occur around having the computer suspended in a stand by/sleep mode, however I’m not sure how this can be affecting the system (stand by has worked fine for me for the past year)

I’ve tried to think of as many of the things that have changed since I’ve moved, so I’ll list them here:
-      In the event that the physical moving of the tower has caused anything to become loose, I’ve taken out and reinserted the cords and boards in my system while down.
-      The only hardware that I’ve installed since the move was a new wireless card.
-      I’ve taken the tower temporarily out of its compartment in my desk, and removed one of the side panels in the event that it has been overheating.

My system specifications follow:
-      Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2
-      Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz, 512 MB of RAM
-      I am running both Norton Antivirus 2005 and Microsoft Antispyware, and have had recent scans showing no infection/spyware
-      Typically, the most that I’m running on my system at the time of the downage is MSN Messenger, Mozilla Firefox, Outlook 2003, Windows Media Player, etcetera (i.e. nothing that my system has had any problem handling in the past)

I’m REALLY at my wit’s end here, as I need my computer to be functioning and I don’t want to have to take it all the way out to the suburbs (where I bought it) for servicing, where they might not be able to even observe the problem (as it occurs so sporadically), let alone fix it.  Has anyone encountered something like this before?  Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?  If you need anymore information, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks so much for your time,

KurtHas anybody dropped this pc or knocked it upon moving?.......upon boot up......hold down the f8 chose safe mode options from the list.....and then chose shutdown from /start menu........and re-boot pc ......Hello again,

Thank you for your prompt response.  After reading your e-mail, I followed your advice and restarted the computer and did a full load/restart in safe mode.  I restarted the system once again in normal mode and used the system for about a half hour, after which I put it into stand by (as a test), and attempted to bring it out of the stand by mode after only 10 minutes or so.  Once again, the system failed to properly load, and I had to shut it off and do a hard reboot.

Regarding your question as to if anyone dropped the machine during the moving process: I don’t believe so, as I made sure that I was the only one to move the tower itself.  I did consider the possibility that the vibrations from moving it in a van may have made something loose, so I attempted to disconnect/reconnect most of everything in the tower (which, mind you, I’ll likely try once again after I send this message).  I should note that a couple of weeks ago, I placed a medium-sized book on top of my tower without unreasonable force, and the machine did fully restart.  This lead me to check everything inside, however I think that this issue is unrelated, as it did not cause the freezing difficulty that I have been encountering recently.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks,

KurtFirst I would hope that while R+R the system boards you were wearing a wrist strap? Number two I would start with the obvious installation of the wireless NIC. When you say new wireless NIC do you mean new as in, never had one before? Or, new as in old one stopped working so I replaced with new of same brand make and model? If the former is true I would look at the IRQ assignment of the NIC. It may be conflicting with another device that is needed when the computer comes out of hibernation. I had a NIC that took the same IRQ as my mouse once. Needless to say that I had problems with none responsive mouse when on the network.
This was of COURSE a USB mouse.
Hope this gives you some help.

www.qsl.net/kc9eye/Disable stand by mode and see what happensHello again,

First and foremost, I was careful to ground myself before tinkering inside my tower; Thanks for your concern.

Yes, this was a brand new installation of a wireless network card, as I had always used a wired setup for my home networking before the move.  I checked my IRQ assignments (listed at the bottom of this message) and there doesn’t seem to be any other assignment to IRQ 22.

I must add that this problem does not occur every time that I come out of stand by, so it’s hard to test to see if something has ‘worked’ (i.e. I just have to wait and see if it happens again, which it did).

Regarding disabling stand by mode, would I do this in the BIOS setup?  I would prefer to use some form of hibernation/stand by, as it helps me continue working without having to re-search for websites that I need.

Solve : Ethernet/broadband help?

Answer»

Hi,
I want to connect my PC to the internet, to use the internet I have to use my dads/the familys computer on the ground floor. My computer is on the first floor. We have one BT Broadband connection. The only way I can think of to cheaply and safely share a connection is through ethernet/LAN, which is bad because I only have the most basic knowledge and I don't know if the built in ETHERNETS on both computers is compatible.
Is there another, simpler easier way? i don't think i can split the connecion and simply wire it to my computer because i don't have a modem and the signal would not make it through the metres and metres to upstairs...
Any SUGGESTIONS would be a big help! Can you SAY, "Wireless Router'?READ the following article, it will answer most of your questions:

Solve : hdd size?

please help me...im using the maxtor diamondmax plus 9 with 80 GB ata/133 and my os is windows xp service pack 2. My COMPUTER spec, pentium 4 with 1.6mhz. ok this is my first try using the 80 gb hdd without update the cmos...just installed the os and leave it untill it finished. so the problems here are...the hdd just show only 32 gb, where the others...can i get it without formatted the drive.....?/You are trying to format it as FAT32, I'll BET. If you format it as NTFS you will get the whole drive in one partition. Does the BIOS see it as a full 80 meg drive?Check the pins at the back of the HDD left of the power supply. There must be 8 pins in two horizontal ROWS. Now on the hdd or in the manual or the publisher's website must be the configuration for MASTER, SLAVE, 32 GB and more.
Hope this helps Quote

1.  You are trying to format it as FAT32, I'll bet. If you format it as NTFS you will get the whole drive in one partition.
2.  Does the BIOS see it as a full 80 meg drive?

1.  I'll bet not.  FAT32 supports volume size up to 2TB, same as NTFS.  NTFS vs FAT
2.  More likely a BIOS issue.

Solve : Disabled videocard by accident, help !!!?

Answer»

I disabled my AGP VIDEOCARD in WinXP by accident. Now I can't see anything on my screen past the Win bootup screen.
My mobo doesn't have any BUILT in videocard, so that's not the answer. I need to see what I do to enable the videocard again.
I tried taking the card out of its slot and reputing it in, but it's not working. I don't have any other videocard to plug in in order to enable the previous one.
What can I do???
I tried also booting in safe mode, nada...
Tried also the last KNOWN good configuration, not working.
Help me !!!!Borrow a PCI video card (any amount of RAM, even 1 meg will do. This will allow you to correct your mistake.

I guess it's safe to say that you learned your lesson?

Yeah, I learned my lesson...
Is there any other way I can fix the problem ?
Not sure where to borrow another card...
If a friend has a PC with any kind of a card that is your best bet. You don't have to load DRIVERS or anything. Just plug it in and connect it to your monitor. Should take all of about 10 minutes, tops. Quote

I disabled my AGP videocard in WinXP by accident. ..

I am interested to know how this is done.  If it's removed from the Device Manager, won't it reinstall itself on the next reboot?  If you see the Bootup Screens, that says that Safe Mode should work, too.
Well, I didn't take it out of the device manager. I did a right click on the desktop, went to the properties stuff, and disabled the videocard there...
That was really dumb of me...
hehehe
I was trying a repair of Win XP, but now it's worse.
The repaoir won't finish and passed the Win XP logo I GET a message saying that the repair is getting finished, computer reboots and this repeats itself forever and ever..
Grr !
If nothing works I might just have to do a clean reinstall of Win XP..
I'll let you guys know.
Thanks for your help !Ok but if you don't want to reinstall, take my advice.

Solve : Losing Active Window?

Answer»

This has baffled me. I work in Windows XP Home edition. No other computer problems except for this. When I am working in an active window, without any indication, the window becomes inactive. For example, as I am typing this message, this window greys out and I find that all the typing I have done has not registered. When I click the mouse, it reactivates the window and I can START typing again. But then without warning, the window will become inactive again - no particular amount of time and no specific keystrokes cause the reaction. I have run several virus programs and have not found a cause. So, I don't know if its a problem with the computer, the keyboard, the mouse, or what.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.I would try a new mouse and or keyboard first as these are the least expensive items to troubleshoot...SINCE the window does become active again i suspect one of the 2 input devices.
ALSO check Control Panel/Power Management and set all settings to never.

patio.  I would check all programs running in the background. It also happened to me and it was the software fo the mouse and the keyboard causing the problem !!Are these a standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse or some infrared or USB THINGS? That COULD be your problem right there.

Solve : home LAN?

Answer»

Hi,

I just moved to a new house and have noticed that there are sockets labelled "LAN" already wired into each room...right next to the phone sockets. In the cellar I discovered a card fixed to the wall which has 8 sockets. LAN1 - LAN6, "IN" & "LINE/U". All the sockets in each room seem to be connected to this card.

I am a complete newbie to networking so I was wondering what this card is, and what I need to connect the PCs in each of the rooms.

I have tried to look for a name/model number on the card, but there is nothing.

I would be grateful if someone could help me out here..

Cheers! With no name or model number, can you POST a photo of the card?  Maybe we can identify it from that.mrmatty...... the sockets you refer to in the various rooms .........do the look like a large telephone jack  ( that takes a RJ 45 connector ) .

Most new houses are prewired for Audio , Video and internet .....or any combination of that .....they will be terminated in a cabinet ..located in the basement , garage or some other convenient location .......
This eliminates the requirements of trying to run and conceal the cabling if its required.

dl65  Hi both,

Thanks for replying.

I have posted pictures of the card.  There appears to be a serial niumber on it, but this didnt  help when i googled it.

http://www.geocities.com/flasc_h/LANcard/

dl65: If the house is wired, what would I need to buy to connect all the PCs together? I would like to share files amongst the PCs, share the internet connection etc.

Thanks again for your help.

Isn't his first photo something like a hub...and then he connects the computers to the sockets in the walls and then connects them using the thing in photo 1?

I might just be wrong?  I am not too sure on networking...

Matty,
How many computers do you wish to connect...

If it is 2, you could just do a direct link...mrmatty.........  Well ,after looking at the pics you provided .......I would think that what you have is a prewired house for both internet and sound . What I cant be certain of is the card ( board) a terminal point only or a router or hub .........
I would also think that there is probably a place for a incoming cable ( or telephone ) connection .   If the board is just a terminal point then you would need a 4 port router , the router outputs would plug into the appropriate output2 ( LAN 1 , 2 ,3 , 4 or 5 ) DEPENDING on which rooms would have a pc .........
Then if you were using a HS cable connection .........a cable modem would be plugged into the incoming cable connection and its output , would plug into the incoming plug on the router.
Then at the other end ( the appropriate room ) a cable from the wall jack to the ethernet card on the pc .......

However , if this is a new house ..........talk to the builder and they should be able to give you more info .....or perhaps the REALTOR .

Btw , I was unable to find out anything by searching the NUMBERS on the card ........

Let us know what you find out .

dl65  Hey MrMatty, NICE setup! I wish my house was wired like that But like dl65 stated, looks like all you have to do is plug in your high speed modem in to the LINE-IN and you should be good to go Cheers!

Solve : computer wont boot-up?

I removed my chip from my computer, the fan was full of dust, I replaced it and now my computer wont boot up. I made sure pin 1 was at the right place, my computer wont even start to the bios, could it be that I need a new battery?

I assume you mean you removed the CPU fan from the CPU, is that right?  Did you replace the fan with a new fan?  New battery?  No.  You reinstalled something wrong, check again.
I removed the fan to clean, I did remove chip also, I do believe I put it in correct? I just went home and installed a new battery. Tryed to boot and nothing! The monitor says "No signal" Quote
I removed the fan to clean, I did remove chip also, I do believe I put it in correct? I just went home and installed a new battery. Tryed to boot and nothing! The monitor says "No signal"

HOw did you reinstall the cip tell me what you did I think you missed something out tell me excatly what you did.Did you lock the CPU in place?  Did you forget to plug the fan back in after cleaning?  Are you sure the fan WORKS?first i turned off computer, unpluged it , then i removed fan & metal square with slots on it, this is where the dust was. Then like a DUMMY I remover the chip, I thought i might be able to up grade it so i removed it to get the information off of it. Put the chip back in lowered the locking bar, replaced fan & metal thing. plugged back up the computer, pressed the power button, fan on chip has power and is running, but hard drive is not kicking in. I get a slight humming sound, but no hard drive activity.Hello, are u guy's still out there, Im pretty sure I put it in correctly, one corner of the chip has a bigger notch in it than the other three side's, I assume it is pin one , right? the other side has a letter "N" on it. The box on the mother board has one corner that has a few less holes on it,  with one pin in the corner. I hope this is pin one. Did I do it wrong or what, I hope I did'nt screw it up!The cpu chip will only fit one way.........re-paste the cpu chip with artic paste and then replace the heatsink>> ........The monitor says "No signal"  reseat graphics card if it has one..........It worked before, then you removed it and when you replaced the item it no longer worked.

It seems obvious that the chip has been ruined or is reassembled incorrectly. No other possibilities I can think of. Did you ground yourself properly before doing this surgery?Don't know if I ground my SELF or not! And the chip seems to have never had any paste on it, that I can tell?Where might I get this paste, and where do I put it. I guess If I fryed it I will have to get another mother board. Can you recommend one that might suit a TEEN , for surfing the net and doing home work. On a mini tower, nothing fancy or expensive. Quote
...And the chip seems to have never had any paste on it,...

Not necessary if it has a thermal pad.
Did yo make sure yo placed the heatsink and fan on correctly.I put the heat sink smooth side towards chip and slotter side toward fan. Then I snapped fan to chip, it has power and is blowing. Quote
...Then I snapped fan to chip...

Don't know how the fan snaps to the chip.  Is this a PENTIUM 1, 2, 3, or 4?

From bottom to top:
Motherboard socket
CPU
Heatsink
Fan

Fan is attached to heatsink, heatsink mounts on CPU which is in socket.  Heatsink snaps to motherboard socket.

Solve : SB PCI 128 MIDI port?

Answer»

My brother RECENTLY gave me his Roland PC-70 keyboard. For some odd REASON I can't find anything on Roland's website about it... I'll assume it's just too old or something.

Anyways, I figured I'd hook up an old computer in my room with all the old parts I had LAYING AROUND. I put in the SOUNDBLASTER PCI 128 sound card, which has a MIDI port so I can plug the keyboard into it.

Everything works fine, I installed a fresh copy of WinXP, and normal sound works fine. Heck, I can even play normal MIDI files.

The problem is, the keyboard isn't making any sound at all. It *is* plugged, and has power. So I'm wondering, what's going wrong here? Is there anything I should install from soundblaster? I haven't been able to find info on it other than installing some drivers which hasn't done anything.

Thanks for your time!if the keyboard is plugged into the pc...............the pc has overidden the keyboard sound. So what should I do? Quote

if the keyboard is plugged into the pc...............the pc has overidden the keyboard sound.

So what should I do then?I might want to add that the keyboard only has one output plug, and it's a MIDI plug. Hence why I'd want to use the computer...

Solve : On board sound does not work?

Answer»

I recently purchased a new Mother Board, installed the CPU, memory, etc: All STARTED up ok; but I can't get the sound to work.
Mother Board: Mach Speed X-Caliber PT88AS SOCKET 478
CPU" Celeron 2.93
Memory: 1024 PC3200 DDR

PS: I checked the bios and the sound is activated: tried auto and enabled.

Any suggestions? I have ordered a sound card as a last resort!Check speakers connections/and mute option.......Check it in your Device Manager.Did all that - shows all working well - still no sound?
Even re-installed drivers. If it is onboard, make certain it is enabled in the BIOS.

Also doublecheck to see if you connected the speakers to the proper connector on the souncard..Thanks, bios is enabled and using correct output. Actually, tried all three just in case it was mis-labled - still nothing - but be a bad sound card on the MB. Looks like I will need an ADDED sound card.what does dxdiag report if typed in the run box ........if this is a new mobo......have you checked that is not earthing on the case...........Did you contact the seller of the board, or the manufacturer? This is OFTEN best in the case of a new purchase.ran dxdiag, reports no errors - but still no sound.
earthing? don't understandMake sure volumn control is loading at startup and nothing is set low or muted. It is generally better to set everything to max volumn in volumn control and then use the speaker controls to make adjustments.

Solve : computer blues...?

Answer»

Hello everyone. I am having a very large problem with my computer, and it seems that the technical support forum is down, so I thought that I'd post here.

Background info: a couple of days ago, I installed an old monitor that I have because it was bigger than the then current one. I noticed that I had to adjust it with every GAME that I opened so that it didn't have a lot of BLACK space.

On Saturday, I was doing this for a game i was playing, and I changed the display settings to 1024x768. It seemed okay, but then it started freezing a little. After a while, it completely restarted, and from then on it would not let me into windows. It says, "no bootfile name recieved" and it also says in some screens that there is no hard disk detected. I'm not sure what is going on, but if anyone could help me, that would be nice. Thanks.Tyler Magee.....Was this an on-line game ?

dl65  actually no, but I did do the same for the online games that i play.Tyler Magee.......Are you using the pc in question now ?

dl65  i wish, but no, it keeps restarting. another part that i left out was that it says that windows experienced an error, and it gives me options, like, safe mode, safe mode with networking, "last known GOOD configuration" or restart windows normally. no MATTER which i choose, it restarts, when i choose "last known..." or restart windows normally, it restarts halfway through the loading windows screen.Tyler Magee.....What about the safe mode ?

dl65  it justs restarts when i try and GO into safe modeTyler Magee...... Can you get into the bios ? If you can does the hard drive show up in there ?

Solve : Problems with CD Drives?

Answer» HEY folks, I have a little bit of a problem for you.

I just recently had XP installed on my computer. Everything was working quite swell, until I loaded an old CD writing program that I got with the computer when I first bought it.

After that, it said that my driver was invalid, or something along those lines.  I uninstalled the program, and after I did that, both of my CD drives failed to show up.

They were working perfectly fine before that (I transferred backup files I made before the O/S switch from CD to my hard drive).  Any ideas on where to go from here?  If I could find the default XP driver, I WOULD throw it on, but I can't, and I'm not entirely sure if it's a driver issue.

My two drives are: LG CD-ROM CRD-8522B and LG CD-RW CED-8080B.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!Well friend ... try to do system restore because you are using windows XP.
DWWell, for now, we'll just focus on getting those drives back... We'll figure out what went wrong later... LETS try this... Click on Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore ... A new window should appear... Make sure that "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is checked, and click next. You should now see a calendar... Click on the day before, or the same day as this happened... There should be "checkpoints" on one of these days... Click on one of them... Just make sure the one you select is a checkpoint made BEFORE you installed the program. Once you find that date you want, click on it, and click next. A confirmation message will appear. Just make sure everything looks right, and click on finish/ok. Your computer will now restart. You will see a progress meter before it restarts... Be patient, as it may move slowly... Once the computer restarts, boot-up in your name, and see if the drives came back. Give us the details after that. Good luck!

[glb]Flame[/glb]Faaaannntastic!!  The drives are back up.  I won't be installing my cd creator program, which is a shame, because it's the NICEST one that I've seen (Adaptec Easy CD Creator).  I haven't been able to find a newer version on the web yet.

Any ideas on what happened?  When I contacted LG about this problem, they said that these drives weren't supported with XP, but they're working.

Anyways, thanks for all your help.  You guys are friggin GENIUSES!!The drives are fine, it may just be the software, as stated, that is incompatible with the drives, not XP unless something happened when you were copying old files back over.

If the drives were made after Easy CD and the updates are not installed for the program (if you can even still get them) you will not be able to burn.

Adaptec Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum was the best I have seen, but after my 8x CDRW died, I couldn't use it on a newer drive.

Solve : Blue boot screen sticks?

Answer»

Soppy if this is already covered. I searched the topics and didn't find it. I might not be calling it right.

I have an HP Pavillion with Windows XP, SP2

Sometimes when it restarts, it gets stuck on the blue boot screen (F1 for setup, F10 for recovery)
If you shut off & restart like 15 TIMES it will FINALLY start windows.

It seems to go through the boot process but then freeze. I can hear the floppy boot and the light comes on. I tried changing the boot order, and booting with everything but the monitor disconnected with no success.

When it first goes to the sreen I can get into setup about 1/2 the time, the other 1/2 it says entering setup, but just sits there.

I'm afraid that one time it's just never gonna come back.
Thank you for any input.Do you hear any beeps?

How old is your computer?

Try to reset the BIOS to its fail safe or default settings.computer is about 1 yr old, maybe a couple months more. A 2.7 ghz celeron.

setting to default settings had no effect.

It beeps once when screen comes up, then the sound which I'm assuming is the floppy booting since it does it when the light is on. Both are noises that it has always made during normal boot.Does the POST succeed and does the problem start when Windows loads?POST? You'll have to explain.  Sorry. Quote

POST? You'll have to explain.  Sorry.

The post is black screen with the white letters (or the mainboard/PC brand screen) that appears before Windows loads.POST = Power On Self Test, to check all the individual components for basic functionalityNo POST, whether boot works or not. I remember seeing it in the past.
Today the monitor wouldn't come out of sleep mode. Restarted an same prob. After about 12-15 tries, it booted up.

I defragged last night, Ive run adaware and spybot. Ran virus scan too. I'm gonna back-up again and try an earlier restore point. Don't know what else to do. Dont wanna recover if I can avoid it.So when you turn on the PC, absolutely nothing is seen on the monitor?

Solve : Installing a wireless router?

Answer»

The son has an XBox on the other side of the house, and I want to set him up for online gaming. I'd LIKE to connect a wireless ROUTER to my PC to allow him to do this. Having never done this before, I'm a little concerned about potentially subjecting myself to a subsequent week of torture, troubleshooting and tech support.

If I have all the hardware (LinkSys 802.11g wireless router, onboard NIC, XBox wireless adapter) and no experience, where's the best place to go for a simple EXPLANATION of what to do and how to do it, and to be prepared for any issues that may arise?

Thanks.www.xboxhope.com ?

ACTUALLY I would recommend (gulp) Microsoft's site, or a gaming forum (computing.net?)I should clarify. I'm not concerned about the XBox end of it; I'm more worried about what I'm getting into on the PC side of things once I plop that router in between my computer and my modem.A hardware firewall can be a good thing for all concerned. I think that is the easy part to do,but I predict the whole setup takes less than 15 minutes even for a Doofus.

Plus when you get your new laptop you will be ready to connect that as well.   But there is configuration involved, right?Minimal! What hardware do you have?Minimal! What hardware do you have? Linksys home page can get you started. You can setup the router with any computer wired to it. (It goes between the cable modem and that comouter), You go to the homepage for setup with your browser and follow the simple directions from the manual (preferably) or the linksys website.

One suggestion. Do not enable WEP until everything works fine. Once you make the changes to the config page (setting workgroup name, etc) any computer that you plug into that router has full access to the internet at a similar speed to what the lone, free standing computer originally had.

When you get that wireless, you just plug in the card and make sure the settings match - channel, type of connection and add workgroup name to it and you are on. Takes less than 5 minutes from when you get the wireless card out of the box. With a hardwired computer, there is nothing to configure if you USE DHCP. It is ALL automatic.

Be sure your jumpers are properly set. If you try to re-install XP, i seriously doubt you will be able to do it without refomatting your HDD. Though you may try to see if you can USE the 'Repair XP' option, this may in fact be your only solution. Other than that, your options are very limited. Also LOOK into a demo of Boot Commander in case you are succesful. Quote

Solve : problem w/ old pc?

Answer» mga dude! can someone HELP me i have an old pc w/c is P3 500,w/ winme,10G hd,320Mb memory, the problem is im experiencing slowlessness when i use it... help plz...  Hi there, hope i can help. GET rid of WinME, it is by far the WORST of ALL Microsoft operating systems. Next, upgrade your hard drive. Your 10 gig is VERY slow as far as tranferring data as compared to the NEW ones. And upgrade to at least 512megs of Ram.

1. Get WinXP
2. Get new Hard drive (ANY new hard drive will be bigger and ALOT faster than the one you have now).
3. Upgrade your ram to 512mb.

To do this will cost you under $200 U.S. But will re-invigorate your Pentium III.

Also note you are now at the extreme low of the performance ladder with that processor, but if all you do is use it for web surfing and some office work, it should be adequate.

Also note, these are ALL upgrades you can do yourself VERY easily, quickly and with complete confidence. Cheers and good luck.Virus scanners

Solve : Computer does not switch off?

Answer»

A friend has a new P4 with WinXP that does not want to switch off. It reboots after switching it off whether from within windows or by the power switch. Power supply was changed and still does the same. only by accedent I un plugged the CD Rom and it did switch off. The CD Rom is PERFECT and works well on another machine. What setting or adjustment is needed to MAKE this work with a CD rom. What do you mean switch off, shut down? The computer doesnt shut down instead it keeps restarting is that the question? The CD ROM should be fine when a computer keeps restarting it could be a heat issue or a hardware issue. Is the CD Drive near the CPU?Windows shuts down and immediately rebootes and starts up again. But it does shut down and stays down when the CD Rom is not connected. There is no heat issue. It happens when the computer is just started and the case is open. The Cd rom is FAR from the CPU and only by unplugging its power the system shuts down normally.Windows update. Quote

Solve : Is This Worth Using??

My room MATE was given an old computer while helping a friend move. He knows nothing about computers and I KNOW the bare minimum.....is this computer worth setting up & using?
  Here are the specs:

Is there 1 MB used by an onboard videocard?

Certainly. A decent 32 or 64MB videocard would fit in perfectly with the specifications.

The computer would even be suitable for Windows XP. Should you wish to install Windows XP, I would advise to install at least 256MB RAM.Product information, HP Pavilion xe744 Desktop PC (US/CAN)THX! I'll give it a TRY!

Solve : Scanner bulb is always on, please help.?

Answer»

I am running Windows 98 on an old Gateway computer and whenever the computer is on the scanner bulb is on. It never shuts off. I remember somewhere in Windows 95 you would go into config or one of those odd "run" programs and could check a box that would connect the scanner whenever the computer booted and this would turn off the scanner bulb. Can someone please help me to solve this ? I am going to sink this darn thing in the lake. Arrrgggg !!! Thank You.   JohnWhat type of scanner is it? if you don't know how to find out, CH000502 on the website.APM......bios......setup.....plug and play........Okay guys, the scanner is a Paperport 3000 and I should mention it uses the old parrellel ports. It is connected straight to the computer and then the printer connects to the scanner with a Parrellel cable. I WENT into the setup utility/ advanced / bios / and did activate the plug and play (I assumed was set to yes) it wasn't but it is now and that did not change anything. *CENSORED* !  I THINK it is important that after I boot up the computer, lauch the Paperport software, connect the scanner and then turn off the software the scanner goes off. I'm SURE this is SOMETHING simple but it is driving me nuts. Thank you for the help.

Set the first boot device to A: (FDD) in the BIOS. Quote

...It was at one time a compusa pc...

I've got one of those!!  Mine is an Intel Motherboard, SE440BX-2, Pentium III-450.  Maybe a little newer than yours.  There's a jumper in the bottom back CORNER, for BIOS reset.  Instructions are printed on the motherboard.  It has 3-positions, 1-2, 2-3, remove.  If yours is the same, position 2-3 is Recover.  These PARTICULAR mobos are very sensitive to any hardware CHANGE.  I moved the FAN connector from one position to another and it refused to do anything, even enter the BIOS.  F2 enters BIOS.

Solve : Digital to Analog?

Can anyone explain to me the process of how/why the information is converted from one form (analog or digital) when it is entered (keyed in) to another form when it is displayed on the screen.

I know that the definition of an RGB (red, green, blue) MONITOR is simple.... I'm trying to explain it to a FRIEND and can't seem to get the words out right.  Help?!

Short for red, green, blue monitor, a monitor that requires separate signals for each of the three colors. This differs from color televisions, for example, which use composite video signals, in which all the colors are mixed TOGETHER. All color computer monitors are RGB monitors.
An RGB monitor consists of a vacuum tube with three electron guns -- one each for red, green, and blue -- at one end and the screen at the other end. The three electron guns fire electrons at the screen, which contains a phosphorous coating. When the phosphors are excited by the electron beams, they glow. Depending on which beam excites them, they glow either red, green, or blue. Ideally, the three beams should converge for each point on the screen so that each pixel is a combination of the three colors.

Solve : Printer Sharing - Please Help!?

Answer»

I have two computers that I am trying to connect to one printer.  The printer only has one port.  The first computer is a Dell Dimension DIM 9100 with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002.  The second computer is a Dell Dimension 8200 with Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002.  The printer is a Dell Photo AIO Printer 942.  I have tried to use a Belkin USB Peripheral Switch but never got it working completely.  It would work with the 8200  but the 9100 would have problems recognizing the printer.  Do you have any recommendations?  I have also tried to set up a network with the network set-up wizard, but can't get the old computer to connect with the printer.
How is the network connected......the net map.....which is the sever....Not SURE I understand what you're asking me.  I have the printer connected to the new computer and both computers share an internet connection through a router.does the other pc work on the net>the old one........did you try....clicking  the my network places icon......it has option to share folders/files/printers.Texgal....Ok , but do you have the pc's setup to share files and a common printer ? Are you able to access files on the other pc?
This may help you ....... http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_home_network.htm

dl65  I clicked on the network places icon and it looks LIKE I could access files, but I can't.  I really just wanted to use the stinking USB switch.Texgal.... Have you tried this ?

To share a printer, on the computer which is directly connected to the printer:

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Printers And Other Hardware -> Printers And Faxes. (Note: These steps will be a little different if you’re sharing a printer on a PC running a version of Windows other than XP. For example, under Windows Me, you click Start -> Settings -> Printers.)
Click the printer you wish to share.
Click Share This Printer in the Task Pane.
In the printer’s Properties dialog, click the Sharing tab.
Click Share NAME and OK.

Make a printer accessible to others on the network by sharing it.

Once a printer has been shared you can access it from other computers on the network. To do so:

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Printers And Other Hardware.
Click Add A Printer.
In the Add New Printer wizard, when asked whether the printer is a local or network printer, select the latter.
In the next screen, select the option to Browse For A Printer and click Next.
Select the APPROPRIATE printer from the list and continue with the wizard.

dl65
load the drivers for it and then plug the beast in........I remember you.

When you installed the printer software on both machines did you have the printer 'switched over' to each respective machine as you installed them?

Solve : Windows xP boots to 98! HELP!?

Answer»

Ok on my brother's computer I wanted to try my geforce 6800 on his computer to see if I still encountered problems. But when I took out his MX440 card and put in my 6800 for some weird reason it wouldnt GO all the WAY in the slot. ALSO SINCE he had no more of the power cable thing the red, black, yellow cable with the white haed I unplugged one of them from 1 of the hard drives. But since I couldn't get my card in any farther and get it to BOOT I took it out and put bak in the mx440. Then when I reboot his computer it shows Windows 98. The only hard drive that has 98 was my old computer hard drive which is one of the 2 in the computer. Then when it boots it says "While initalizing device NDIS: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." when I do i get the same error. What do i do?So you have a boot loader problem, or you never reformatted that drive and made it a logical drive on an extended DOS partition.

Obviously you did not have an 8x AGP slot, or perhaps any kind of AGP slot. You're lucky you didn't ruin anything, but that's another story.

Do you ever boot Win98 on that machine?

If you can't fix the boot loader, then you may be looking at a reformat and a total reinstall. You did back up all of the data files you might need on that machine?

Solve : Problem with my memory!!?

Answer»

First and Foremost, I have no Viruses or Adware, It's a clean and new O.S..

This is weird.. I have a Gateway Computer, Intel P4 2.5GHZ, 706MB of RAM running on Windows XP SP1.... I had it for about a year, and it ran fine. I usually reinstall Windows once a month, well, the last 2 installs, i've found that my memory gets too low now, waaaaay too quick.. If i let the computer sit for 20 minutes or so, then TRY to start programs back up, they won't load.. They all get stuck at 64K in the memory in task manager.. I KEEP having to restart about every 30 minutes!! I have a 512MB and 256MB stick of DDR memory inserted..   I had no recent hardware changes besides the installs of XP..  I usually surf on Internet Explorer, but now, i'm only allowed to surf for 20 minutes, then usually the applications fail and is unresponsive.. After I close try to reopen IE, or any other heavy program, they simply won't load.. I'm torturously forced to restart my computer every 30 minutes!!! and Does any one know a way for me to trouble shoot all of this, or any suggestions?
Well you must have a viruses or spyware.

I dont know what it could be.

Errmmmmm

try microsoft anti-spyware

R0SSDoesn't DDR require 2 chips of the same size to function properly? (I know this will not solve the problem.)

I always enjoyed a reinstall of Windows, but it sounds like you are doing it waaaaaaay too often. There is something seriously amiss here.

There is some background process at work here eating up your CPU/RAM usage. Usually these are viruses/trojans, etc. You SAID you are clean, but what have you used?

Have you contacted Gateway about this issue or done a Google search to see if this is a widespread problem?

hang in there. Quote

...It's a clean and new O.S...Windows XP SP1....

What do you mean by "new"?  WinXP-SP3 due for release.  Upgrade to SP2 immediately and then perform Windows Update.
^Not new, but a clean install.. I scaned my memory with PC Doctor, scanned with memtest, I scanned my hard drive, defragged, and all of that.. I even did a scheduled disk check, but when it finished and tried to boot back up, I got an error message on a Blue Screen that read,

Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing
xxx STOP: 0x00000006 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x000000000, 0x000000000)

In so many words.. I don't know how to disable these things.

I'm using RAM Def 2.5 and it regulates the memory well.. At first IE wouldn't open at all after like 30 minutes of running.. Now it opens fine, but it won't connect to the Net.. My anti virus still runs, but won't live update..  The internet won't connect.

Weird problem..sonofisis.....First , let me say that you have sufficient ram for Xp to work well ......But given that you are unable to update your AV and can't access the internet , suggests to me that there is probably a virus present.
So ...I suggest trying this .
1..Turn off your system restore .
2..Shut down and restart in SAFE mode.
3..Run you anti virus in safe mode ......deleting anything it finds.
4...Run SpyBot and ad-Aware and of course remove anything it finds .
5...Reboot into Normal mode , go online and ATTEMPT to update your anti virus.
6...Rescan your pc .....again with your updated AV .
7...Go to Windows update page and get all the updates ...Including SP2 ....
8...Then D/L and install M/S antispyware Beta ........

9.... If your pc seems to be running ok .......turn back on your system restore .

Let us know how it goes .

you have it all wrong.. AV can't connect only when my memory acts up.. I'm updated, and I've scanned for a virus.. I have none, I even said that already. I'm very familar with getting rid of a virus.. this is an unknown problem.. I have no viruses, My memory has been doing this the past two reinstalls I did of Windows.. Quote

I did that, I even switched places, then switched back.. I left the 256 MB stick in only at one point, and it did the same.. I would contact gateway, but i'm no longer under warranty..Uninstall RAM Def 2.5 and see if it improves. I've seen RAM optomisers act up this way.

patio. Nevermind now guys.. I'm 99% sure that i've isolated the problem.. I was using Outpost Firewall, and I just uninstalled it.. Now that it's uninstalled, the internet doesn't mess up after 30 minutes, and everything loads fine.. I don't know why Outpost would prevent my Internet Explorer from opening, but that seems to have been the case. I've now been online for almost 2 hours, no problem, I hope that it isn't just a fluke, but i'm quite sure that there was a conflict with Outpost Firewall.. Quote

I would definitely start by losing RamDef, whatever the heck that is. If you need  programs like this, if it works, you've got other prolems. Let's just work on one issue and remove ALL of the variables.

Solve : hdd info transfer?

Answer»

is there a way to tranfer the contents of one hard drive to ANOTHER, assuming both o/s are the same? This is called drive imaging. Acronis TRUE Image 9.0 is an excellent tool for taking a snapshot of one drive and TRANSFERRING it to another.

I'm not familiar with anything reliable that would be available for free, but someone else here might be. Or go to Download.com - I can't vouch for what they have, but you can research it.Hey,

True Image is really perfect for creating hard drive image. I've been using it for quite long time, so I could say it's the easiest and most convenient software I've ever seen. ALSO it has very useful tool, just special for you - "Disk Clone".
Plug second drive as slave> create clone and it will transfer everything onto another drive almost automatically, it's very easy and comfortable.
Tried method!
Thanks GUYS you are always such a great help !!!
