Solve : Power Supply Compatability?

Answer»

Are all power supplies compatable with any COMPUTER?  If not, I have an IBM NetVista 6794 model that I NEED to put a BIGGER power supply in to install a better video card, so what would WORK (need minimum 300w)?  Thx.Some NetVista's did, most proprietary systems don't (that's why they're proprietary). You might check on the IBM site for that model, or look at the power supply itself (many are by LiteOn) and go googling with that part NUMBER to get info.

300-350 ought to be fine, unless you added a LOT of peripherals.

Solve : system locking up?

Answer»

Is it possible for a power supply to cause a lockup at any given time?  I replaced the motherboard and cpu, also thought maybe the harddrive was the problem so it was replaced but still it locks up at different times.  Sometimes it will do it while in BIOS setup, sometimes after a reboot with scandisk running, sometimes after a boot and sitting idle.  The only thing that hasn't been changed since this started is the power supply, case, and DDR memory.  Im running out of parts to swap.  Any help is appreciated.More info maybe helpful......like ram ......are they a match pair.?......operating system is?.....the more info the better to help you solve your problem...okIf the fault lies with the PSU, it would most likely shut down or reboot. Not crash.

You may wish to test the RAM by using Windows Memory Diagnostic as faulty RAM may cause the system to crash.check all your fans are working and clean I had a pc last week the cpu fan had a CARPET on it and had STOPED working all TOGETHER, the pc would run for about 30 mins the flock up,
another pc was in a cupboard with no air HOLES for air to move

Solve : New Hard Drive question??

Answer»

Friend of mine had to put in a new hard disc in her HP computer. Now when she goes to Defrag it is over in SECONDS. The installer told her that this is normal because there is no data on her new hard disc. Is this a correct answer to her problem?? THANK you:)Yes,

Defraging a hard drive is just puting all the files in order.
So when you have used your Hard drive all the files will be all over the place and when you Defrag it it PUTS themm back together so the computer can find them fast.

If there is nothing on the Hard drive it will defrag fast because the files are where it needs them to be.

Perfectly normal.

The more you defrag, the less time it will take next time.

The less files you have, the less time it will taks.

Defrag your HDD on a WEEKLY basis. It prolonges the life expectancy of the HDD.

Solve : Hard drive!!!?

Answer»

I have this like... iunno what it is, 218? hard DRIVE. And I wanted to know if there is a possibility to put two 512's in with this ONE. Will it make my computer faster or just add more space. Cause i'm really trying to make computer faster.arielle...... Ah ...I think perhaps your refering to RAM (memory as opposed to storage ?)

Sounds like you currently have 256 mb of ram installed and you wish to add 2 additional STICKS of 512 mb
That would make your pc perform much better .......however , just be sure that the new Ram matchs the existing ram or you may have problems .

dl65  oh and how do i know if they are the same?
this computer is completely custom cause my ex built it for me then decided to not tell me a damned thing about it... and I don't know where to go to figure out the INFORMATION on it Quote

So where are you COMING up with these numbers? Generally more RAM speeds things up, and hard drives let you store more data.i have no idea, i was just told by someone if i add two 512's and open up some room it would make my computer run faster

how do you upgrade the ram? Quote

how do you upgrade the ram?

Start by reading this.
Then go here and do some homework.
First , download Everest Home Edition, now check what kind of RAM you have. Then go to some site e.g Ebay (Egay  ), Amazon etc. and give in the RAM name and look for the cheapest Seller and longest garantie (the lifetime garanties are for REAL   you can trust them only if the firm is well known and wont go for broke).

Solve : Wireless connection to a wired network?

Answer»

I have a home wired network connected to a Lynksys router / ADSL modem.
My wife has a laptop and would prefer to connect to the home network and subsequently, the net with a wireless connection.
Does anyone know of a device which will connect to the network that will ENABLE a wireless connection from a laptop without the need to buy a new wireless router?wightrob....... Will the laptop accept a PCMCIA ethernet adapter ....then just plug into the existing router ?
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1224098&CatId=588

dl65  Is your linksys router NOT wireless? If not then you must have one and the laptop must EITHER have built in wireless card or a pcmcia wireless receiverThanks for your reply dl65.  The laptop is a FAIRLY new Sony Viao and has a built in Ethernet adaptor.  We have connected to the home network using a patch cable.  This works fine.  The problem is my wife wants to use the laptop from anywhere in the house without hard wires.  I think that the  laptop has built in wireless connecvtivity.  My idea was to plug a wireless sender/receiver into a network port to eliminate the cable connection to the PC.Thanks for your reply wrwss.
The Linksys router is not wireless, it's a wired model(AG041(UK)).   The wired network works fine for the rest of us but my wife just feels too tied down with cables!
I have explained in my reply to dl65 what I want to do to avoid buying a new router as these THINGS are not cheap on this side of the pond.if that router does not even send a wireless signal, I can't imagine a cheap way to pick one up.You will have to purchase a wireless router for the laptop to connect wirelessly to the internet. You will have to put it in place of your current gateway. Check on ebay for a wireless router, you will save alot of money.

Solve : Graphics card Failure???

Answer»

There is no video signal coming from my pc.  The monitor is showing no signal.  I have tried swapping Monitors with no effect.  This WOULD INDICATE that the graphics card has failed , but I've tried booting it up with another card (Matrox G550 dual head) with the same result.  There are no irregular bios beep codes that would indicate where the problem is.  Does anybody have any ideas before I try to swap out the motherboard???How's that power supply working? I would swap that  one out briefly with a known good unit and see what happens.

What happened prior to this event?

If power supply is found to be good - Is this a PCI card? If so, try another slot. Try that card in another machine.Power supply APPEARS to fine.  The pc sounds like its booting up.  I'll try the card in another pc.So it is an AGP card? I SUPPOSE you have tried removing and reseating the card?Yup, tried that.  The matrox card I tried was a pci one (tried it in different slots) which didn't WORK either. I'm going to try that in another pc as well just to confirm that it's working ok. Watch this space. We'll be here..........

Solve : someone diagnose me?

Answer»

Hi, okay here's the problem

I'm trying to build my computer, and it's my first time and after setting up the entire rig, i booted it up, and...nothing is displayed.

Here are the symptoms:
- fans are all spinning
- Led on the mobo is GOING on (i've got an asus A8N sli deluxe and it's a green led that's comign on)
- no beeps or sounds (but that might be because i don't have that system warning speaker thing in my case, so I didn't hook anything up to that particular connection)
- nothing is displayed on the monitor and I ran the mobo for 15 minutes to CHECK if anything'll come up

Is this a fried mobo or processor or a bad gpu or something? Any help would be uber-greatly appreciated.oh, and here are my specs

Asus A8N Sli-Deluxe mobo
2x 512 pc3200 Corsair XMS ram
Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego CPU
560W Thermaltake PSU
2x 74 GB SATA
Audigy ZS
If you have not tried to reseat and test all hardware individually, then install a speaker. Without a speaker, you will never be certain.

so do i install a sound card and install a speaker into that? could I use headphones instead? You connect the onboard speaker to the mainboard. The connector should be located near the other connectors such as HDD_LED. It should be labeled Speaker. However, it may be named spkr as well. It depends on the motherboard. Refer to your manual for instructions.oh yea, that plug

yea, in my manual, it says that i should connect something here to HEAR beeps and etc

but the only problem is that there is no system speaker on my case or any plug at all that fits into this plug
Your running AMD's newest core - San Diego. You MUST update the bios for this particular core first. You may be able to obtain a PC speaker at any dedicated computer store.lol, i would update my bios, 'cept my comp isn't posting  :-/

okay, i'm going to a pc repair shop soon, gonna tell them to check up on some stuff before my newegg warranties expire

btw, thanks for being patient and helping this noobIf the computer is still under warranty, you should make full use of that warranty.

just wondering, but how would they know if the product was doa or fried while handling?I have never had a product that was dead on arrival so I can not tell the difference. I never destroyed a piece of hardware either.Did you load the mobo floppy disk that came with it?it contains loads of data thats NEEDED....okay, I went to the pc repair shop and they told me that most likely, my mobo is dead or something. They said it's about 80%-90% chance that the mobo is the culprit, because since they couldn't test everything fully cause they didn't have AMD systems or PCI-X capable mobos, they weren't 100% sure

Here's what happens though, tell me what you think:
I bought a speaker thing that connects into the slot under the HDD_LED and all that stuff. When I hook up the cpu and cpu fan, I hear this loud beeping. Then, when I add the ram but NO GPU, there is no beeping, which is pretty wierd.

Oh, and I was trying to know how would the reseller (newegg) know if I fried the mobo or if it was DOA? I'm pretty sure it was DOA because I've got no carpet in my house and made sure to be grounded. And what happens if it turns out that what I RMA'd wasn't defective? Do I have to pay something?

And how much static does it take to fry something? A jolt that you can feel, or less?
Start again & tell us where you are up to?
New mobo? Old mobo? What's a GPU?
Carefully put it all together, turn it on & tell us what happens.
Others may disagree but I don't think static is a huge problem so long as you touch the case to eliminate any potential static & try to handle the components by their edges.

Solve : Finiky Network Card.... or something?

Answer»

I have a dell inspiron 5150 notebook, it connects to the internet thru a dell truemobile 2300 router. On saturday, my laptops cord had fallen out, unbeknowst to us, the battery ran out, and it abruptly turned off on us. After reconnecting everything and rebooting I found that I could not get on the internet thru both the Firefox and IE browsers, plus thru a online game by the name of World of Warcraft. Our desktop computer which had a direct connection to the router worked fine.

I tried resetting my router, removing the power cord from the router, repairing the connection thru the laptop. But it did no good. I finally used the same cord that our desktop connected to the router and hooked it up to my laptop and found that it still did not work. I even bypassed the router and DIRECTLY connected to the comcast cable modem, again without sucess.

But I did find something very odd. One program on my laptop was able to connect to the internet. A Instant Messaging program called Xfire. It worked fine without any screw-ups. And I was able to chat online. But every other online program would not work at all. Whatever the problem is it seems to be isolated to my laptop. I'm not sure if its my network card or not, and I really don't UNDERSTAND how the HECK I could connect to xfire wirelessly, yet nothing else would work.  And I'm not sure if the SUDDEN power outage on the laptop caused anything to mess up....

If this belongs in software sorry, but I really can't tell and I don't see forum areas for network and internet issues.
Hi

Are you running XP?
Try system restore if you are.
If you are GOING wirelessly check that IE/Firefox are not using an older internet connection.

Tools> Internet options> connections> and it should be set to never dial a connection as the router now holds the access information.

Solve : CD Rom Drive problems?

Answer»

Ok if anyone can help this is my situation.  I have an older computer that I am trying to get running again.  It is a Gateway 2000, 233 Mhz, with only 96 RAM.  Because I am an idiot I installed Windows ME on it and would like to try to add some RAM and upgrade to Windows XP.  My problems are as follows:  While the CD Drive is listed in the BIOS information on Boot up(A TOSHIBA XM 6202B), it does not appear in the My Computer area of the OS.  The original hard drive and a secondary hard drive that I installed as well as the floppy drive all are listed but not the CD Rom drive.  It will open and close but will not read data.  Furthermore in the Device Manager I have yellow exclaimation point indicators on both the primary and secondary IDE controllers but not the Master Bus IDE controller.  When I check the device status of the primary and secondary IDE controllers it says "The device is either not present, not working properly or does not have all the drivers installed. CODE 10".  I'm not sure what exactly the primary and secondary IDE devices look like but I know ive never removed them and when I try to update the driver it tells me the drivers are fully updated (of course its only checking the windows drivers since it has not internet connection :more on that later).  We had a power surge at the house recently and this is my girlfriends computer.  She tells me that she stopped being able to get on the internet via the Linksys USB network adapter right after the power surge.  The CD Rom drive was undetectable for at least several months before the power surge so I dont think the two things are related but what I am trying to figure out is where do I start with all this to try to salvage this computer?  Is this a long first question on here? Let's go a few things at a time. There are 2 or 3 cables to the CD ROM drive. One is the power cable. It has 4 coroed wires. When fit in snugly and operation the CDROM can open and close the drawer as well as spin. There is also a flat grey (usually) cable that is the data cable between the CDROM and the Secondary IDE port on the motherboard. If a good cable is plugged in correctly on both spots and the CD can not be read within Windows, it is time for another CDROM. A third very small wire MAY connect the CDROM to the sound card which may be an actualy plug in card, or a port on the motherboard.

The BUSMASTER IDE controller is not relevant to this discussion as it is unrelated to any of these problems, and is on the motherboard, not to mention it apparently works OK.

Is there just the one CDROM drive? If so, it should have jumper on the back that designate it as master on the secondary channel.  There are two hard drives, and they sound like they are working, but they would be jumpered and listed as Master and Slave on the primary IDE channel.

Now a surge of electricity could have damaged both of those IDE channels, but make sure everything is plugged in right. You can see the drives in the BIOS so that is a good thing.

Windows XP will never be a good fit on this machine. Windows ME, though it has it's problems may work, although some RAM would boost it's performance, it's not required at this time. Do you have the original WIndows CD and the Registration Code? (25 digits - may be on the machine  or on a book cover). If so that is good.

Go to bootdisk.com and download the boot disk for whatever operating system you plan to use. BUY a used CDROM or borrow one for a test as you will need it to load WIndows of any kind. Did you get a driver CD along with that computer?

OK, your turn.I've already removed and put back the IDE Cables.  There is a double cable to the two hard drives and a single cable to the CD Rom Drive.  The jumper on the back of the CD Rom Drive is in the Master posisiton and has never been fiddled with.  I can't find the original Windows CD and was worried about XP but if I can't install XP I would still rather put someting else on the computer and am considering Linux Red Hat but want to get the hardware running right first.  If the IDE channels have been damaged by a power surge that is pretty much it for the mother board right?  or no?  I don't have a driver disk but that's not a huge deal I have used Belarc to make a list of all the hardware and can just find the drivers out there on the net if past driver experience is a guide. If the IDE channelsare damaged you can always get a PCI IDE controller board (about $10 on eBay) which will PROBABLY run the drives better and FASTER and provide up to 4 IDE outputs. I just sold one, so I know of which I speak.

What other components are we talking about - video,  sound card, etc.

How about a Live LInux CD to test everything? With only 96 meg of RAM you will be limited as to what to run other than Windows 98SEAnother question is if the IDE channels are FUBAR why are the Hard drives working and for that matter why does the computer even boot up?  Unfortunately for me this is a Gateway so the outer case and design of the CD Rom that came with it make it impossible to install a new internal CD Rom so it would have to be an external CD Drive.  There is one unrecognized piece of hardware in the device manager and under that device is listed the orginal modem which also has the yellow circle with an exclaimation point in it.  I tried to take a screen shot of the device manager to post here but the old CTRL-Print Screen method doesnt work it seems in ME.  What exactly is Live Linux?  Does it tell you if Linux will run on a specific computer?  I was under the impression that Linux required a lot less to run that Windows.Something else I just discovered under the performace tab of the system properties is a window with 3 messages which follow

[glb]Compatibility-mode Paging reduces overall system performance.[/glb]Additional details of this message are: [glb]Windows Millennium Edition was unable to identify a real-mode driver or memory-resident program loaded in your Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file. You will see another message that lists the name of the driver or program causing the problem.
Because Windows Millennium Edition could not identify the driver or program, it has switched to MS-DOS compatibility mode to ensure the program will run. However, this decreases overall performance. To improve performance, remove the program or driver causing the problem, or contact its manufacturer for an upgraded version.[/glb]

The second and third messages in the window are: [glb]Drive C/D is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system[/glb] and the accompanying details are: [glb]This problem often occurs on more than one drive. Usually it is caused by a driver listed in the Config.sys file that Windows Millennium Edition does not recognize and that is related to the message Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance. If you see both messages, see the Help for the Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance message first.
If you only see the message Drive X is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system on one drive, that drive is using an MS-DOS compatibility (real-mode) driver, which might reduce that drive’s performance. Contact your hardware manufacturer to see if an updated driver is available for your drive. If not, the drive’s performance might be less than optimal, but you can still use it.
[/glb]

Any clue what thats all about?

Solve : Screen goes black, without a BSOD first !?

Answer»

I starting to have problems with my server again.
It's a AMD64 3000+.

I run Windows2000Pro + sp4.
The graphic card is a ATI Radeon9200 SE.128mb
and the motherboard is a ASUS K8V-X.

and the worst is that I'm not even getting a BSOD,
he screen just goes black.

How ever, you can still hear the FANS in the computer working,
the power led on the computer is still on, so the PSU seems ok.

But everything closes down. If you have music on, it stops,
and you can't reach the computer even through the LAN,
so it is in what you could call a "frozen state".

And the CPU is about 50° so its ok, not over heating.

The evenlog doesn't show anything at all and it doesn't leave any trace in drwtsn32 either.

Graphic card error ? Motherboard failure ?

Any clues ? Help please !!!  Personally I would run a Live Linux CD to determine if it is hardware or software. It's free, just takes a few minutes and it's simple. If it boots and runs -> it was your software. Quote

Hm, but I forgot to write, it doesn't happen that often, only like every other day or so.

In between it works just fine... but it's very annoying when it happens as you
loose what you are doing at the moment, when it happens. !Need to find out if it's hardware or software somehow, That's my take.I just updated the video card drivers, just because I have really nothing to loose in this stage.
If I have like sh*t luck, it could be it, not that I think so.

How ever I'm 99,9% sure that it's hardware.

But what I need to know is, what part ?
the video card or motherboard ?

I still got warranty left on the motherboard but not on the video card.

The video card would be much easier to replace though,
but I don't want to buy a new one unless I'm about 99,9% sure it is that what causes this problem.

So if anyone is familiar with this problem or have heard about a similar case, please let me know !  Can you check temp on the card? Was is a recent install? Remove and reseat everything, check for card wiggle in the slot. Is the power suplly adequate for all of the hardware installed? Can you check with a borrowed PSU for a few DAYS?

I'm trying to think of easy things to check (and free too)

The temp on the video card ?
No, but the motherboard temperature is 37°C

No it was not a recent install, everything have worked with the current configuration earlier for at least 6 months.

Yes, the powersuply is adequate and only about 7 months old also.

There shouldn't be any wiggle anywhere, I have built all my computers my self and I'm sure it is correctly set.

How ever, thanks for the advice,   but as I said earlier, it's most probably the motherboard or video card.

I just need to know which ?Try another video card, or put the old one back in for a few days?   Old one ?

The thing is, I'm don't think I have a spare video card,
my last one broke loooooong time ago.

But I'll look into it tomorrow and see if I can find another old one somewhere ...  Maybe you can borrow some generic PCI card from someone with an old system sitting idle?Crystallize:

Some guesses as to other possible causes:

CONFLICT between two hardware devices or two programs can lock up the operating system infrequently.  It's really hard to determine which two devices or programs cause the conflicts in these cases, but it is usually the latest device you added or the latest program you installed.  Try removing the latest software application or hardware device to see if the problem goes away.

2. A small crack in the motherboard that the naked eye cannot see may cause a short every once in awhile.  One way that i've read to take care of this is to loosen one of the screws that holds the motherboard to the case.  This is supposed to relieve the pressure on the board that widens the crack.  This is only a temporary solution, however.  The permanent fix is to replace the motherboard.

3. A metal screw that holds the motherboard to the case, if it touches one of the lines of circuits, may cause a short circuit in the motherboard.  The way to take care of this is to put a small PAPER washer between the  offending screw and the motherboard.

4. The power supply may be dying hard.  Solution: Replace the power supply with one with the same or more power.

5. A virus may also be causing the problem.

I'm sure there are many other possible causes, but these are all that come to mind at the moment.

Blessings to you,
Doc

Maybe you can borrow some generic PCI card from someone with an old system sitting idle?

Nope, I don't and I have decided to wait with trying the other VGA card if the re installation of the drivers helped any first.
--------------------------------------------

Thanks for you suggestions pcdoc4christ
I'll answer them in order...

1. I have not really installed any new software lately. And no hardware at all for a half a year.
But I did notice one little odd thing anyway. I checked in the display properties and it SHOWED that
there was two VGA cards installed, one secondary. I'm not sure if this should be, but I don't think
I don't have two on any other computer, to add, the mother board does not have a built in VGA.

How ever, I tried to uninstall all graphic drivers and then reinstall only one, but it installed both automatically simultaneously.

2. I could try this, how ever, I'm putting off pottering with the hardware until I have no more options.

3. No I checked this when I assembled the computer.

4. I'm leaning against this solution in the first hand.

5. No I have no viruses on the computer, for sure.

So thanks for your suggestions, I may have use of this suggestion nr. 2 if nothing works, I have never heard that solution before. Could be worth trying.

Also what do you think about nr. 2, the 2 drivers ?

Everytime I turn on my printer it immediatly start printing over and over again, sometimes its blank sometimes it has some weird looking code on it.

What model printer did you say this was? And you said it was a USB or parallel connection? And what happened between it worked fine and it didn't? And what have you tried to fix it? And what is the operating system in question?

Without the info we can go no further.   guy......Go into the printer que and delete anything thats in there ...... Then run your printer test .....

let us know

dl65  Model: HP Deskjet 970Cxi (professional series)
Connection: USB
System: Windows XP

Nothing really happened to cause it. Last night I printed a picture and turned off the PC, I got up went on the internet (didnt really do anything) then I tried to print and this happened. I havent tried anything to fix it really, i'm not very computer literate.

On the second note I deleted the que list but one last one just sticks there no matter what i do, its just one of the pics I tried to print but I don't see how all that screwy code can come from that.1. CLICK on Start-->Run
2. Type services.msc
3. Click on Print Spooler
4. Click on Stop the Service
5. Delete all files in C:\windows\system32\spool\printers
6. Now go back into services and restart the print spooler.
I need help badly
I have a printer deskjet model 870cxi
the printing has become eratic and skips and car hardly be read.  I took it in for service and they told me it couldn't be repaired it was too costly... buy a new one
but sometimes it prints okay.  I just put in a new cartridge and cleaned  it but still the same ...the top half of the word does not print or it skips
Anyone can help me???Why do you DOUBT the advice they gave you? Have they worked on more printers than you?

If the ink jets are plugged you can have problems. Many Epsons install new print heads with each new cartidge, but not so with this model HP. If it is a mechanical problem, your advice was PROBABLY right also.

I saw a printer the other day (unfortunately a Lexmark) that was "Buy the ink cartridge, get the printer free". What are you waiting for?

I have a BenQ Joybook 5100 that just will not boot. It started playing up, not booting properly about one MONTH ago and then last WEEK NOTHING. What could cause this? I thought the hard DRIVE but I tested it in my computer and it works fine. Could it be the power supply/lead, battery, or could it be motherboard/processor/RAM? Any HELP would be great.

Thanks,

Solve : hdd not decteted?

im trying to replace my 6gb primary slave with a new 160gb seagate.  my pri master is a maxtor.  i can only get one decteted at a time.  always who ever is on the master cable.  slave is never detected.  ive set the jumpers to CS and forcfully slave/master DEPENDING.  why cant i get it to recognize correctly.

i have an asus AK8N mobo.

thanks so muchDid you use the Seagate tools to setup the new HDD ? ?
Until the drive is partitioned and formatted it will not be recognised by Windows.
I would also suggest not using CS, causes headaches on some systems.

patio.  it is formated as ntfs with windows loaded on it, im using the other one for linux.  the problem is the mobo is not detecting it.  if i put either as pri master, it is decteted.  its when i try and use both where which ever is on slave is not deteced.Maybe you bios needs upgrading.........pay the mobo site a visit.....Go into the setup screen and see if the drive is registering, and what MB. It may be a BIOS limitation of the MOTHERBOARD. Since it is a 6 gig drive, I am assuming it is an older model.

More info and we can help.

1. The Seagate may not be compatible with the Maxtor.
2. There may be a problem with the IDE cable.  Try a new 80-wire ribbon cable.

Solve : Will a PCI-E x16 card work on this??

Answer» http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=999942500050007&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01173&id=pcmprd42700050007

It says its PCI-E but doesnt say if its PCI-E x16DarkRagnorak........
Like most Athlon 64 chipsets, the RADEON Xpress 200 series will talk to AMD Athlon 64 (and Sempron and perhaps Opteron) processors via a HyperTransport link. That link is 16 bits in each DIRECTION, with a clock speed of up to 1GHz. Because the latest AMD processors have their own memory controllers onboard, the Radeon Xpress 200 north bridge chips should perform in memory-bound tasks about like most other chipsets do when paired with an AMD K8-class processor. Thus, the bulk of the north bridge's uniqueness comes from other FEATURES, like PCI Express and integrated graphics.
Below is a quick feature summary of the new PCI-E north bridges. The asterisk next to the HyperTransport speed on the nForce4 is intended to denote a possible problem. NVIDIA says it will have a full 1GHz HyperTransport link, and we believe it, but rumors to the contrary just won't go away. We're sticking an asterisk in there just in case.

Intel 915G/925X VIA K8T890 ATI Radeon Xpress 200 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
HyperTransport link N/A 16-bit/1GHz 16-bit/1GHz 16-bit/1GHz*
PCI Express lanes 16 20 22* 20
North/south bridge interconnect type DMI Ultra V-Link 2 lanes PCI Express N/A (Single chip)
Peak theoretical interconnect bandwidth 2GB/s 1.06GB/s 1GB/s N/A (Single chip)

The Radeon Xpress 200 north bridge has a hefty 22 lanes of PCI Express connectivity. (Lanes are the bidirectional pairs of point-to-point communication LINKS that make PCI Express work; each lane offers 250MB/s of bandwidth in each direction.) 16 of those lanes will be dedicated to a PCI-E X16 graphics slot in a typical configuration, while two of them on the Radeon Xpress 200 are dedicated to act as links to the south bridge. That leaves four lanes free to service on-board peripherals or PCI-E X1 slots.

ATI says the Radeon Xpress 200 could, in fact, serve as a competent chipset for a motherboard capable of hosting an NVIDIA SLI config by dedicating eight PCI Express lanes each to a pair of PCI-E X16 slots, just as other SLI motherboards reportedly will. I don't doubt that such a THING is technically possible, but I'll believe it's happening when I have a production motherboard in my sweaty little hands.

The other bit of PCI Express related goodness you may be interested to learn about is related to overclocking. ATI says the Radeon Xpress 200 can indeed lock the PCI-E clock at standard speeds while the rest of the system (primarily the HyperTransport link, which controls CPU and memory clock speeds) is being overclocked. That opens up the possibility of some fairly decent enthusiast's motherboards based on the Radeon Express 200P showing up.

Hope this answers your question .

dl65

ok thanks I'm going to add a X800 PRO to hit so probably not going to overclock

Solve : video card & hibernation?

Answer»

Someone installed a 2nd soundcard for me, and messed around a bit in the BIOS.
The Tab for Hibernation (Windows XP pro) has completely disappeared now (also, the Standby button in Shutdown menu is grey, thus inactive).

It was suggested I should re-install the videocard to recuperate the Hibernate Tab - is that correct?

If so, is there an easy manual somewhere that explains how to do this? I'm not very knowledgeable on soft nore hardware  :-/  If you have 2 sound cards installed in that machine it's possible that could create havoc...decide on one and uninstall the other one. Make sure it is also removed in Control Panel/System/Hardware Devices.

"Straighten out" the BIOS, PUT it back the way it was.
When you say messed around in the bios i assume they were trying to disable onboard sound. If this is what they did it shouldnt effect the things you talk about. Can you do a system restore do you know how to do this?. Quote

Do you not have a manual for your system or motherboard? You are more likely to have it than we are! What are the specifics of the system?

Can that someone that "messed around in the BIOS"  put things back LIKE they were? Or at least tell you what they did?

If I would do a system restore, all the SETTINGS that were made for the new soundcard to work GOOD, would be undone also.
The guy who messed in the BIOS claims there's NOTHING strange he did that could cause the problem.

Guess I'll have to live without hibernation from now on.

I have also tried changing the USB connection around and still am having the same problem.  Nothing seems to be working to correct this problem.

Solve : Access Point vs. Router?

Answer»

I have a second COMPUTER in my house that I want to CONNECT wirelessly to my INTERNET connection.

I have ACCESS to a free access POINT if I want one, but I know a router is what most people use. If I understand what I have read on the internet, an access point is a router without the security and switching capabilities. So why is the access point more expensive? Is there some reason why I should buy a router when I could use an access point that won't cost me anything?

I'd like to preserve the clamps if possible, as they're gone from the local SCENE (except for eBay, etc). Also, is there a "proper" way to remove the fan *censored*'y from the heatsink with a minimum of force (to permit PLACING the clamp)?

Solve : Problems Installing New HD?

Answer»

I'm attempting to add a new 120 GB HD to my WinXP computer.  I currently only have one hard drive installed.  But Disk Management shows two volumes:

VOLUME   Layout    TYPE    FileSystem  Status
(blank)   Partition   Basic   FAT                Healthy (EISA Config.)
(C)             Partition   Basic   NFTS              Healthy (System)

The C: volume listed above is my ACTUAL hard drive and operating system, which was formatted with NFTS.  Right-clicking on C: under Disk Management brings up a full pop-up menu.  But when I right-click on the blank volume to try to delete it, a very short menu pops up.  The only item on this menu is "Help", with a horizontal line above the word "Help".  It appears that this pop-up menu just contains the very last item of the full pop-up menu that I can get by clicking on the C: volume.   The blank volume is described by the Disk Manager as a 39 MB drive, which is a similar size to a an old HD I had tried to INSTALL as a second drive (but gave up) when I first set up the computer.

I have tried installing the new 120 GB hard drive, but the computer doesn't recognize the new drive, and it has no affect on Disk Management.  I've double-checked the jumper settings, and I don't think that is the problem.   How can I clear the "phantom drive" from the Disk Manager?Computer make.model can be significant as for instance many Dells require CS rather than master slave, etc.

I am assuming this is an older computer with a hidden EISA configuration utility. PLEASE leave that alone unless you know what you're doing.

When the new drive gets recognized by the BIOS correctly it should show up as D. Don't mess with C unless you want to start all over again!!

Solve : Helping a fellow newbie.?

I have a friend that will help me out by puting it all together, but... He said he won't help me buy the pieces and that I should find out the information before buying the items. So, here I am...

What do you look for, for a TOP of the line gaming computer, fast computer, powerful computer?

Basically, what power supply, video card, processor (pentium D?? Is it any good), RAM, CD, DVD drive, SOUND card should I be looking for? And anything ELSE that I have missed. I am an EXTREME hardware newbie, and I would like to learn.
Help! Ok the best thing for games right now would be an nVidia 7800 GTX 256 MB Graphic card. That would be the most important thing for a game pc. These cards are around 500 dollars each. Note that you could also wait a little bit for the 512 MB version wich is really better for newer games.

Dual core is not a good idea for games because it doesnt help you much because games must support dual core. I would go for a AMD FX 57 for a 1000 dollar.

2x 1 GB of memory in dual channel. 2x sata hard disks in RAID 0. And the newest X-FI sound card from creative. New mainbord for PCI-E 16 VGA, 2x sata raid 0, socket 939, 4 banks ddr memory dual channel and pci for sound card.

You figure out the pricing.www.alienware.com - get a gaming machine. It may be cheaper in the long run.

Solve : computer suddenly freeze?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a computer that is used as a webserver in my small NETWORK. what's been happening is that it can freeze or hang by itself and i have to reboot it to get it back to normal. Then, it works for a while and you'd never know when it could hang again. But i noticed that it sometimes happens quite a lot over the weekends. Very weird but true. The trouble is this. Because i installed a private mailserver called merak mailserver on that computer, i can't get any emails until manually having to reboot it.

It's pentium 3 (quite an old one), has a decent memory space(used for mail only), and windows XP Professional.

I have also PC-Cillin antivirus scheduled to run automatically on a daily basis, Microsoft antispyware and ADWARE running automatically on a appropriate timing.

What should i do? is there any way of fixing this apart from getting another new machine?

Thank you for your help in advance and look forward to hearing from you.Have you made any changes to the system before this happened? Do you have maybe too many applications running at once?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Something has changed with the computer of it's setup. Maybe just that mail server, but I suspect it's more. Could you post more details please on precipitating events? You may get a hint by looking in your 'Event VIEWER'.Hi, guys. Thank you for your replies and sorry for getting back to you late.

I don't know exactly what happend to it over the weekend because the mailserver resides at the office. And luckily, my boss lives very nearby. He went to get it reset then it came to work as normal.

He said before resetting it, he noticed the screen was blank and the machine was running because he could see the power LIGHT on. He moved the mouse around but nothing happened on the screen.

By the way, I went and checked the event viewer for the date of 8th oct and the following date up until today, nothing too serious other than getting warning message that read as follows

"The time service has not been able to synchronize the system time for 49152 seconds because none of the time providers has been able to provide a usable time stamp. The system clock is unsynchronized."
SOURCE: W32Time.

I don't think this would be related to the above problem.

Thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you

Solve : Light case vibration?

Answer»

What does it mean when the case seems to lightly vibrate when you place your fingers against the  case? This seems to happen even with only the monitor cable CONNECTED.

Is this dangerous?

Should I ground the motherboard in a better fashion? If so, how? When the computer is running or shutdown? Quote

This seems to happen even with only the monitor cable connected.

It happens even when the PSU power cable is disconnected and only the VGA cable is connected.

The VGA cable leads to a Compaq 15" monitor which has been turned off but, in turn, is connected to an ungrounded outlet.

Does the same with another monitor/computer connected to the same power outlet. Coincidence?

Does it happen when the video cable is removed?
This is a weird one, do you get cockroaches over there? No, it does not happen when any of the cables are removed.

No, we do not have roaches.

I have seen this before, but now it is happening to a computer I am building. My other two computers, one Compaq and another one that I built and rebuilt over and over have never shown these signs.

I connected only the PSU to a grounded outlet and the behaviour does not seem to reoccur.

When I held my Multimeter against the case during an ungrounded connection, the ratings would go up and down. Now, even though it is connected, they stay at zero.

My conclusion would be that it is caused by an ungrounded wall socket. Can you explain why, Fed?Can you run an extension lead & connect eveything to a grounded outlet? The initial setup was:

Ungrounded wall outlet -> Extension cord -> Two monitors plugged in, 1 computer plugged in (Black case). Both computers vibrate, even though the computer I am now speaking of (Qtec case) VIBRATED even with only the  VGA cable connected.

The secundairy setup was:

Grounded wall outlet -> Grounded extension cord -> Two computers plugged in, one turned on, other turned off. Connected the Qtec case to the power cable and it wouldn't vibrate.

Reconnected it to the ungrounded extension cord/wall outlet and it started to vibrate.

Why is this? I have seen it before. Even the computer in our living room shows these signs. (It is connected to an ungrounded extension cord as well. )Mate, I'd love to nut this out with you but it's 1.20am here and I have to get up early tomorrow.
DL65 is an electrician too so I'll be INTERESTED to see what he has to say in the morning.
My first thoughts, all outlets should be grounded, that's how we do it here. (For at least the last 40 years)

See you tomorrow, have a good day.   Quote

We have almost no grounded outlets. Old house. Can you get your outlets grounded?
What supply voltage do you use? Quote

1. Can you get your outlets grounded?
2. What supply voltage do you use?

1. Why should I? I have grounded outlets for the computers I use often. The answer is no, though. Unless you can do it for free.

2. 300 Watt PSU. It ALSO happened to another computer with an entirely new PSU on the same outlet. Not PSU related.

I am not quite looking to resolve the problem, I want to know why it happens and if it is dangerous to the equipment or user. Quote

300 Watt PSU

Is your electricity grid pedal powered?230 Volts.

300 Watt PSU with stable SUPPLY VOLTAGES.Wow, this is a first for even me. I've never heard of a situation like this before. The only thought that comes into my head is what if you were to try a different monitor on the computer. Maybe the monitor is bad and somehow generating this issue. You have never touched a computer that seemed to be under current? (Don't know how to call it). It feels like its shaking a bit.

It goes away when you connect it to a grounded outlet, I learnt that much today. But I don't understand what causes it.

I come from Europe, you're both from America. That may explain why you've never seen it?

I suppose you have never heard of a buzzing monitor either. Bleh.  :-/

Solve : selecting CD-RW drive for burning picture files?

Answer»

My computer's (an emachines PC with Windows XP, just so you know) CD-RW drive doesn't work properly, and I just hooked up a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive to one of my USB ports this weekend. I've ALREADY used it to burn music CDs so I know it works with my computer. But though I figured out how to switch my Windows Media Player over from my original CD-RW drive to burning with the new drive, I can't find the way to burn picture files using this drive... it only recognizes the original drive and I can't find options for changing the default when I'm burning pictures.

Please help...Deandra Mason.....What kind of burning software are you trying to use ?

dl65  Now I feel very clueless, because I don't know the answer to that. I just select the pictures I want in the "My Pictures" FOLDER and hit "copy all to CD." But it sends them to the wrong CD drive and I don't know how to redirect it...

thanks  Deandra Mason........ok .....I know what your doing .......
Question for you ........when you have the external cd burner plugged in to the USB port ........what drive letter does it SHOW up as in "My Computer".

Look in you programs folder (or in ALL Programs ) and see if you have a program called NERO or Ahead Nero ?

let us know

dl65  The drive letter is E... I don't have Nero...

thanks  Is the CD-RW detected? You may need to install drivers for it.

Does it work outside of your copying software? If it works for copying music, then doesn't that mean it's detected? I was able to go into iTunes and Windows Media Player, and switch the default burning drive over to it, I just don't know how to do that with picture burning...Wmp can not burn jpeg/ipg files to disk......maybe you need this >>http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4055

the pic files should burn as DATA? Quote

If you can copy music, then why can you not copy pictures? If you are using Windows XP, simply drag the pictures onto the CD-RW station, right click and select copy files to disk

Solve : a disk read error has occured-dell 8100?

Answer»

I need to get out of the same screen, every time i restart, message says-a disk read error has occured-press ctr-alt-del to restart. I have a dell laptop 8100 inspiron- bios A15- also what would be the boot ORDER for this, or how can i get around this problem. Thanks Press F2 when you SEE the dell screen and see if it recognized the hard drive in the BIOS (about a  third of the screen down). If not you may have a bad hard drive, OR the drive may have gotten slid out of its docking SOCKET. If so, just push it back in until it clicks. Some have a screw and some don't to hold it in, OTHERS just a release on the bottom.

Let us know what you find.

Solve : Memory, internet, and computer speed.?

Answer»

Well, I installed a new memory card, and now I have 1 gig of RAM. And now, for some reason, my internet is faster. Well I guess that is a plus... However, when ever I download, a web page, or a big file, all of my system resources are taken up. For example, if I am downloading something, my mouse only MOVES about every 20 seconds. When I ma listening to music and surifing the web, the song gets laggy. I am not sure of the cause of this.OK, here goes the USUAL drill.

Scan for Spyware, adware and viruses

Ad Aware, Spybot, and AVG Free work well for this, if you don't have one or all of these. You can google for the download sites.

If that doesn't fix things, then post the specifics of your machine - make/model, etc. etc., the more the better.

Identify what was happening before your machine started slowing down - did you spill coffee in it, kick it over, etc. etc.

Someone will then be along shortly to solve the problem with you.

Actually, for some reason, Turning off page fiel solved the problem. I have no spyware, or ANYTHING like. And I already said, I installed a new memory card and this started happening. Quote

I give up. What is page fiel and how did you turn it off? And everything is normal enough to call this case cured?Sorry, I mean "page file," as in reguards to virtual memory. YES, this did solve the problem, but I want a way to fix this without having to turn my virtual memory off.Can you do a system restore to a previous time?

Are you interested in backing up critical data and reinstalling Windows?Welcome back John    Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Have you made any changes to your system recently?

Solve : screen is black, hard to read icons?

Answer»

Heres the problem, I have a Toshiba a45 s120, when I boot the laptop up the screen is very dark and the icons are hard to read.  It has LCD panel., at first I thought it may have been the inverter.  I bought a new one off of ebay. the problem still continues after I installed it.  So I decide to disconnect the inverter from both ends and boot the computer up again.    Same problem, dark screen and hard to read...any HELP or ideas???
ThankiesHave you TRIED adjusting the brightness?  Fn + F7

We I first had this problem, my FATHER and I removed the keyboard to reveal the mother board.  He used a samll insulated screwdriver and pressed slightly down on a contecter on the motherboard.  I am not sure what the connecter is for, I'm assuming it is how the power is transfer from the battery (main power) to the inverter to the lcd screen.  Any ideas?  Thanks for your replies!!!   Quote

I have read your post above many times now & have come to the conclusion that we are not speaking the same language. In fact I suspect you are speaking Merlinspeak which I have only a limited understanding of. I wish you luck with your problem.   LOL!

Poking AROUND with a screwdriver on a motherboard is not a good sign...........type dxdiag in the run box and test graphics......maybe your graphics card is failing...I can't imagine what you've done. Never poke around with a screwdriver on a motherboard ESPECIALLY when you don't know what you are doing.

So what happed preceding this. And what happens with the external monitor? It WORKS OK?Yes the using another monitor works fine.  I trust my father 100% with working on my laptop.  He knows he's electronics, sincetheir are times he fixes electronic equipment with our business.  I am trying to find other reasons beside the panel is in need of repair or the inverter is bad.  If anyone happens to know how much voltage is transfered from the battery to threw the inverter to the panel.  My cousin is the one who suggest the cable that connects from the battery to the inverter may have a short in it.  He knows his computer stuff, he teaches it at a local university.  Thanks again for the helpful replies.Lcd screen has had it......Well if 2 people who know 100% what they're doing can't fix it, I would say replace the LCD or buy another laptop, which will probably be cheaper.
