Every time i boot up, after a while the computer restarts randomly.

Exactly what do you mean by that .
How long does it take before it shuts down .......and are there any error messages ? Which OPERATING system are you using ?

dl65  Using Windows XP Pro

It Shuts down after Varying Amounts of time, generally it doesn't stay on for more than 3 MINUTES, there are NO error messages, and no beeps to indicate anything. One minute its on and fine the next its rebootingList pc hardware........check the power settings.......control panel......if you get there......check the power options in the bios setup screen.Have the extra drives caused to much heat build up, take the side of the case off and see how it runs. make sure all the fans are spinning including the psu fan. If still no luck reset the bios by taking out the cmos battery and check for faulty memory. It may even be the new power supply thats faulty.

Solve : Graphics Card Trouble?

Answer»

I bought a new computer several months ago and just recently I wipe it clean and reinstalled windows and that is when my problem started.  I updated the drivers to my graphics card and now none of my computer games will work.  Everything works FINE on my desktop but once I start to load a GAME the problems start.  First everything runs NORMAL but after about 30 sec of loading everything freezes and there are a whole bunch of little blue rectangles all over the screen and the whole computer is frozen.  Could this be because I have the wrong driver installed?  If so what can be done to fix this problem.  If not what else could it be?  Thanks.Update Windows & directX.
Then get video & sound drivers from the manufacturer's websites.Ok....now what drivers do I need for my GeForce 6800 MADE by MSI?  Do I go to the MSI page or Nividas page?http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_12687.html

Solve : Inaccessible Hard Drive?

Answer»

Hi there,

I am having a very frustrating problem right now, I have a 30GB Fujitsu 2.5" hard drive which I am currently using in an external usb hard drive case, the type I have is the one that doesn't require an external power supply it just connects into 2 usb ports.

When I plug it in, it shows up in "My Computer" as drive D which is normal but when I try to click on it (highlight it) "My Computer" stops responding.
I tried running "Scandisk" but as soon as I click the drive under the list "Scandisk" stops respoding.

I'm running Windows 98 SE so what I did is deleted all drivers that the usb drive needs to operate and I replaced them with fresh COPIES, but this did not do anything.

I'm starting to think there is a Read/Write error going on here but I'm unsure how to fix it. The Hard drive powers up just fine and makes that whirling spinning sound you hear but no matter what program I USE to try and access the drive that program will stop responding.

Could this be a hard drive malfunction?
I would be open to backing up all my data off the drive and burning it to CD/DVD but I don't know what sort of program could be of use?

I'm not in any hurry to get this problem fixed as the only files on the drive are mostly mp3's and music video's but all together there's about 20GB of data there which I'm not re-downloading!

Please help

Regards Matthew Matthew........ Is it possible that the additional load of the external hard drive is more than your PSU can handle ? How many watts is your PSU ?

dl65  One thing I forgot to mention before is that I've had this thing working for almost a year now and all of a sudden it's decided not to work.

To ANSWER your question my PSU is 150W, it's a preety old computer but its definently a good working one.No...Sorry its a 250W unit, does more than 25Amp surley this is enough, I don't have alot of things running in this computer and I also just tried it on a friends computer and it did the same thing. Was it a new drive when you relegated it to this duty a 1/2 years ago? It may just be dying? If it doesn't work on any other computer as well I would suspect the device. Quote

...the type I have is the one that doesn't require an external power supply it just connects into 2 usb ports....

Very common problem, I've had several do the same thing.  USB port is unable to provide enough power to perform read/write.  USB ports supply 500ma Max.  External power supply for the USB drive case will fix the problem.
I'm getting my friend to come around my house sometime with his external usb hard drive case (same as mine) and I will put my hard drive in it to determine wether its the case or the drive.

GX1_Man: I BOUGHT the case BRAND new and the drive 2nd hand off ebay. Because the same problem is happening on different computers I was thinking it is the drive, but I guess something else might be playing a part in this too.

Computer_Commando: Very interesting, not enough power ay? Infact this morning when I tried it again on my computer the drive seemed to have trouble powering up, it just kept spinning then stopping then repeating the process over and over. But on my upstairs computer (just got it up and running with WIN98) it powered up fine but still couldn't access the data on the drive without the computer freezing.

Solve : PC not booting up?

Answer»

Help!  I upgraded my PC about a month ago and now it will not boot up.  I hear the fan motor running but no beep, nothing on monitor.  Lights flicker.  I upgraded to Windows XP and ADDED 128 MB (192MB Total) ram to my E-machine 600. Also added a cordless mouse. Since then, when I shut down the PC it will not power off on its own,  I have to push the power buttor to turn it off.  Yesterday,  I turned on the PC and it rebooted to the users screen but when I clicked my name the PC shut off and I can't get it to reboot since.  Any suggestions?192 MB is rather low for Windows XP. 512 MB gives a much better result. Even doubling up from 256 to 512 MB makes a huge difference.

Did you do a clean install of XP and can you go back to your original mouse?

Have you enabled APM in the power settings?

I did a clean install of XP.  I did not MAKE any changes to Power setting.  (didn't KNOW how.)  The research I did on my PC indicated that 256MB was most RAM I could go up to??  I can go back to old mouse if I can get the PC to boot up again.Have you added a new graphics card to this pc?....what happens if you hold down the F8 on boot......does it display the black screen....

Solve : Power/Motherboard Problem?

Answer»

Have problem with booting up without rechargeable wireless optical mouse ("I.T. Works") installed in recharging cradle attached to PS/2 mouse port.  Any other mouse connected to P/S2 port or a USB mouse connected to USB port will not enable boot up either.

Had similar problem previously which led to new Asus A7v400-MX SE motherboard which worked with above wireless mouse for about 1 month until problem showed up again.

Can't detect PS/2 mouse port in BIOS to disable nor can I  disable PS/2 mouse port in Device Manager.

Am running Windows X/P; SP2 using AMD Athlon X/P 2.13 gigahertz.

Is this likely to be another MOBO failure or a power supply problem?

Have looked inside case & everything appears normal.

Any suggestions please?

ThanksSomestime power supply problems can cause motherborad problems. What exactly happened to the old one?The old power supply was used in the new motherboard.  It does seem to be working OK though.

Are you getting any error MESSAGES?
How far does the boot sequence go?

You dont have a printer with memory card, switched on when booting up by any chance? No error messages because Boot sequence doesn't start at all unless/until wireless optical mouse is placed into charging cradle attached to PS/2 port.  At this STAGE, things work.  I do experience premature shut down sometimes once system is up and running and I begin to use wireless mouse.

And no, I don't have a printer with memory card, switched on when booting up (I have a lexmark X75).

Another factor is that I sometimes get randomised front panel lighting effects.  By this I mean the HD light together with the illuminated on/off switch and the power on light flicker in random sequence, but nothing else happens.  This can occur when I turn off the PC but don't immediately return the wireless mouse to its cradle before shutdown has completed.boot pc........without the mouse.....recheck bios SCREEN start up options.....hold down the del key on boot......chose defaults from the onscreen list.....Can you change the channel on that mouse ? ?
My Logitech has 8 or so channels.
Are you using any other infrared devices on that system i.e.
a Palm syncying tool etc. Can't boot PC without rechargeable cradle attached to PS/2 port and mouse installed in cradle - no power!  However, all three keyboard indicators lit for "Num Lock", Caps Lock" and "Scroll Lock" when I try to boot with mouse out of cradle.

Have previously been through restoring BIOS default route, but no improvement.

No, I can't change channel on wireless mouse - its a low cost version.  Also, I don't have any other infra red devices attached. What happens if you use a normal keyboard and mouse and forget about those two wireless things you have? I guess my question is: Is it worth this?   I agree, the point is I can't boot up at all with a normal PS/2 or USB mouse attached (or not attached for that matter.  The keyboard isn't wireless, by the way).  I would very much like to keep matters simple and not use the wireless mouse but I can't boot without it in its cradle and attached to the PS/2 port.  Frustrating or wot?

Thanks for sticking with me!Try this...

Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and find the LISTING for the mouse.
Right Click on it and select remove. This will produce an error message.Ignore it.
Now power down and disconnect the wireless mouse. Connect a normal PS2 mouse and re-boot. Windows will automatically load drivers for it and you should be good to go.

More and more this is sounding like a DRIVER issue.

patio.  Hi guys,

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions.  I have fixed the problem now - installed a new andd uprated PSU and everything is running fine.As suggested in the first reply 5 days ago!

Solve : Problem with external hard drives?

Answer»

Last September 2004,  I  bought a   " MASSCOOL FI310 Aluminum 3.5" USB + IEEE 1394 External Enclosure"   to WORK with my 250Gig Maxtor hard drive.   This worked FINE until about July 2005.   Then the hard drive stopped working totally.  It wouldn't work with the 1394 PLUG or the usb plug.

I decided to buy a new hard drive and use the same External exclosure in August.  I bought a WD 160 gig drive this worked for about 2 months.  Now this hard drive doesn't work either.

Now I'm not sure what's going on. Is it possible that the  external exclosure is killing my  hard drives?    I don't have another computer to put the hard drives in to determine if they are really dead.   I hope not,  this starting to cost me a lot of money. The hard drives I've had in the past have lasted for years.

I'm not sure what to do now.  Should I buy a new external case?  I really need something external to easily use a  backup device for both my  desk top and my  laptop.   Note that this  external drive is "gently" used.  I do not carry it around.  I leave it in one location for backups.

Solve : Graphics/Sound card not recognised?

Answer»

I previously had an Nvidia graphics card and a Creativelabs sound card
installed. Upon restarting my OPERATING SYSTEM for an unrelated reason, I had
left the CARDS in their PCI slots, so they were removed and I reinstalled my OS
again. When attempting to install the cards the graphics card is not recognised
at all and the sound card is currently recognised as an ethernet controller. (Yellow exclamation)
I have tried changing PCI slots and searching for the hardware myself to no avail. I don't have the original CD for the Creativelabs soundcard but i do for the nvidia. When attempting to install nvidia i am told that there is no relevant hardware installed.
What does this mean and how can I get my PC gameworthy (Rome: Total War) without
buying new cards or a new PC?
Thank you very much for your time.
Your question makes no sense
Being a registered member you can edit it.un-install the drivers.......you dont need for the graphics card...........now install the drivers and the graphics card you need to play the game.......dont forget to diable background processes......and maybe even anti-virus programs........CHECK the game box..Did you do a proper reinstall of windows, like fdisk and format the drive. If you did i belive you need to reseat the cards and install there latest drivers.

That is the only advantage.  The only problem is "off-angle" viewing, the image fades if you're not directly in front of the monitor.  I'm sticking with my 19" CRTs.

If you have enough room, CRT is the way to GO.thanks, i'll save my money then  ABSOLUTELY no risk of dead pixels and second HAND CRT monitors are incredibly cheap should yours fail. And a place to go is ebuyer.com......

Solve : Split Hard Drive ...?

Answer»
I have a Sony VAIO laptop that has a C drive and a D drive (totalling 60 GB).  The C drive is very CLOSE to full and I keep getting warnings about low memory.  The D drive is almost empty however I am not sure how to access it (outside of going to 'save as' for every small thing).

When saving photos etc., will I have to automatically put everything in the D drive or is there a way that everything can automatically go there?

Will the D drive automatically have the software from the C drive or will I have to load everything again?

A very basic question I know, but your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you.

1. Are you getting warnings that you are low on disk space, or that you are low on virtual memory? There is quite a difference between these two warning messages.

2. It depends on the software you use, most software can be configured to ask you where to store the files or they can be given a default path. I suggest that you do not make use of the latter and this may cause files to be overwrited without your consent

3. No, the D: drive (It is most likely a partition if you are using a Laptop, not a seperate Hard Disk Drive) will be completey empty if there are no programs installed.

However, with any program that allows you to save or open files, you can access files that are located on D: and C: with very little effort.

Solve : computer fan?

Answer»

My fan is all of a sudden acting up. My computer overheated a couple of times, but only during a game I PLAY(Starcraft) At rest, my comp is clocked at around 60 C, when it over heated the last time, it was at 83 C. Whenever I play me game, it jumps to around 70 C. What can cause my fan to act up? If this helps, I did carry around my computer before this happened, but i was careful not to BANG it around.A desktop or laptop? Have you tried cleaning the fans?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Remove excessive dust.

1. What CPU is installed?
2. What kind of cooling do you have?

Starcraft is not a very intensive game, you should take better care of your computer.I have a desktop, AMD Duron, with a typical fan overtop. My mom is going to buy me a can of compressed air to CLEAN it. Also, if you mean i don't take care of my computer by not cleaning it, its OK. But I do try my best to take of it.Are all fans operating? Standard AMD fans do not always cut it. I suggest that you look into a Cooler Master fan.

Solve : Computer beep during POST?

Answer»

I have put together a BAREBONES kit from Tiger but am having a problem.  Upon powering up, I get a long repeating beep. Keyboard lites up when power is TURNED on but does not activate when computer is booted up, no video.  FANS work, fan on AGP card works.  CD ROM led is on.  I have two SATA HDs plugged directly into the motherboard, not using IDE slots.  CD ROM is plugged into the IDE1 slot.
Beep codes should be identified in the motherboard manual that came with your system. If Tiger didn't send one then check the manufacturer web site.I have, manual only has two beep codes for the award bios and neither one describes my problemTry re-seating your video card. Or move it to a new slot.
Also make sure your RAM sticks are seated properly.

patio.   Quote

I have, manual only has two beep codes for the award bios and neither one describes my problem

What is the make and model # of the motherboard?Motomark:

Actually, there are three beep codes for Award BIOS:

1 Long, 2 Short = Video card error
1 Long, 3 Short = Video card error
Continuous Beeps = Memory error

For a memory error, remove and reseat the memory modules (i.e., RAM sticks) while the power is off.  If that doesn't work, buy some contact cleaner from an electronics store (e.g., Radio Shack) and clean the contacts on the RAM sticks and the banks on the motherboard and reseat the RAM sticks.  If that doesn't work, one of the sticks is bad.  Remove them all but the one in the first bank and RESTART the computer. If the computer boots OK, power it off and add a second in the second bank.  When the computer fails to start, you have found the bad stick.  Replace it with one of the same type (e.g., PC-100 or whatever type your system requires).

Hope that helps,
DocBTW:

A memory error may also be caused by a failing power supply, because the power supply fails to provide enough power to the memory modules, so they stop working properly for lack of wattage. So, if replacing the memory module(s) does not work, consider having a computer repair shop replace the power supply for you.  Purchase one with a higher wattage rating (e.g., if it is rated for 300 watts, replace it with one that will put out 400 watts).

Best regards,
Doc

Solve : Weird IRQ Problems?

Answer»

Alright, for the better part of a year, my computer has been crashing for apparently no good reason.  I could be surfing the net, watching a DivX or XviD encoded video, or writing in Microsoft Word and my computer will suddenly crash (It will blue screen, due a memory dump and hang; when I SET it to do so.  Otherwise it just shuts off and a very quiet siren goes off in my motherboard and I have unplug the PC for about two minutes to reset the jumpers).

I'm running on an nForce2 chipset with the Audio, Lan, and Video integrated.  I'm using Windows XP, using 2 256mb DDR PC2700 (333 MHz) RAM, AMD Athlon XP 2400+, the motherboard uses Dual Channel memory, and I haven't overclocked it.

The reason I believe it is an IRQ PROBLEM is because I have tested my RAM extensively and nothing has come as a result.  I then took a look at my IRQs (after the IT teacher in my school suggested) and, although there is supposed to be a maximum of 15 IRQs, I have 18 in total.  More surprising is that some of them seem to be on Channels higher than 15.  My exact IRQ settings are below...

********************
IRQ Usage Summary:

IRQ SUMMARY

********************

(ISA) 0  System timer
(ISA) 1  Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
(ISA) 3  Communications Port (COM2)
(ISA) 4  Communications Port (COM1)
(ISA) 5  MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
(ISA) 6  Standard floppy disk controller
(ISA) 8  System CMOS/real time clock
(ISA) 9  Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
(PCI) 11 NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management
(ISA) 12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse
(ISA) 13 Numeric data processor
(PCI) 16 NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU
(PCI) 20 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller NVIDIA(R)
(PCI) 20 nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface Standard
(PCI) 21 Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller NVIDIA®
(PCI) 21 nForce(TM) IDE Controller
(PCI) 22 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
(per) 22 NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Adapter

The other reason why I think it's the IRQs is because everytime I add a NEW USB device, the PC calms down with the crashing.  Meaning, it crashes significantly less.

If anybody can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.Also, my DMAs are as follows...

******************** DMA USAGE SUMMARY ********************
DMA Usage Summary:
     2       Standard floppy disk controller
     4       Direct memory access controller
Sorry, I just realized that I actually have 14 as a few of them are shared on one channel, but still, I find the distribution a bit weird...Control panel....admin tolls performance tab>>events log......what do it tell you........what is the error code on the bsod....stop .irq_less_equal... Quote

Control panel....admin tolls performance tab>>events log......what do it tell you........what is the error code on the bsod....stop .irq_less_equal...

Okay, I went to Control Panel>admin. tools>Performance... but there is no event log.  There's only Counter Logs, Trace Logs, and Alerts.

Also, there are no items in Trace Logs or Alerts. It looks normal to me.  I don't believe the IRQ's are the cause, but your description offers a clue:
"...it just shuts off and a very quiet siren goes off..."
You said it is integrated video.  I could be something is overheating and causing motherboard to shutdown.

1.  What is make and model of motherboard?
2.  Does it have the latest BIOS updates?
3.  Are you able to monitor motherboard and hard drive temps?

another clue:  "...everytime I add a new USB device, the PC calms down with the crashing..."
4.  Is POWER supply fan running at proper speed?

5.  Can you leave the side off the case?  See if that helps.

Solve : BIOS Update Error?

Answer»

I updated my BIOS and now it will not boot AT ALL. The Screen Stays Blank and it laughs in my face as I sit there and wonder why.

Is there anyway to roll it BACK or get it working without replacing the CMOS chip?
do you have the bios boot disk< the one that may have come with the motherboard>.........if so reload it.....I'm SURE it's a boot disk but there's no display, and it doesn't short beep like it should. A bios boot disk........>is not a o/s boot disk.....

do you have a recovery disk........is this a laptop/desktop/tower........or you may NEED to go to bios re-flash site........>I know I'm talking about the disk that came with the mobo, might be a boot disk, in which case it doesn't matter casue I won't be able to see what the *censored* I'm doing.

It's a tower.

And what is a re-flash site?Reload the boot that came with the  motherboard......you may be lucky.............with holding info is futile...Just out of curiosity why were you FLASHING the BIOS? Was it because you were having problems, or just that there was an update and you wanted to load it? Was it from the official site?If it was the wrong update you might have to check here for a solution.

Solve : using the hdd on playstation 2?

Answer»

i tried to find the answer to myself on the forums, but as i know almost nothing about hdd and ide cables and partitioning etc, i hoped to save myself some grief by asking here

i have a 40g hd on my computer already.  its a celeron d 2.66ghz.  ive never added components to my computer before, except for the dvd burner, which im still not entirely sure if its hooked up correctly.

the 40g hdd that comes with the network adapter on the playstation 2 has the same input/output as the cables that connect my hdd, floppy, cd, and dvd players onto the motherboard.  is it possible to connect my ps2 hard drive to my computer?  im not sure of the architecture of most hdd's, but the ide input and power source are on teh same side if that helps installation at all.

if youve done this before, or know if it could be done, please let me know as im itchin for more memory. thanks!Well memory and hard drive are 2 different things., but I believe that is a standard drive in the  game consolde. If you are that desperate that you want to cannibalize it then go ahead, but I wonder about the other implications. Are you through gaming on the console? If the PS2 has the corract input/output port AND cord, then I don't see why it wouldn't work... However... You would only be able to use the hard disk on ONE system... It can not be hooked-up to both... Does it say anything about this in your PS2 instruction manual? If you don't know MUCH about cables and partitioning, etc., then I do not suggest starting this project unless you have step-by-step instructions... Another thing... MAKE sure that the power supply in the PS2 supports your hard disk... Not good if it doesn't... Good luck...

[glb]Flame[/glb]oh man you threw in some variables i didnt even think about (power).  my biggest concern, from what i read in the forums, is that if the second hard drive is slower (they measure them in rpms?) then both drives go by the slower speed.

still havent figured out how to measure that one.  tried using different tools from various sites.  since SONY doesnt have a dedicated computer component site, im still unsure what, if any, drivers would work on it.

suprisingly though, the ps2 hdd IS compatible, theroetically.  i followed step by step, with the jumper set to slave etc, eide cable and power cord.  while the instructions say you cant put more than 3g's of force on it, im sure i put way more jamming it into the bay (the hdd for ps2 is slightly wider to compensate for console) but i jammed it in there square hole in circle style.

ive run kill disk and it made one partition on the new drive.  im unsure of the jargon though, unpartitioned, allocated, PRIMARY, active.  i know what they mean, but in terms of hdd, no clue.  everything apears fine.  no damage to master hdd, despite the pounding and jamming.

assuming the hdd is some foreign brand, or, a non existent brand, what DRIVER could i use for it?  im assuming now that i formatted the hdd for ps2 without using the playstation's hdd utility disc, that the hdd is now just your average, run of the mill hdd.  does it matter the brand like it matters the website?  the directions on the ps2 hdd say not to use it outside of the playstation 2, so theres no help there.  as far as power, should i be concerned about the hdd? or the source of the power (the box with all the wires sourcing power to the components).

really juming in head first on this one.  could use some guidance por favorWhat is the purpose of doing this to a ps2?i think i told my problem wrong.  i wanted to take the hdd from the playstation 2 and put it on my computer as a supplement.  now that ive cleaned the new drive, "partitioned it", i dont know what to do.

as for the ps2, i hardly use the hdd for that, i figured i could use the extra space on my computer.  ps2 still usable thoughNot anymore! ? the hdd on the ps2 is supplemental as well, it can operate on whatever is inside the console.

im still needing some help.  i found different sights with different drivers, but i still dont know how to install the hdd on to my computer.  is it a motherboard driver? a cd/dvd driver?  if i need a driver, how would i load it?

i should probably get started reading the forumsIt doesn't need drivers. How did you partition it ? ?
All you have left to make it usable now is to format it assuming it was partitioned correctly.

patio.  if you are adding it as a secondary drive, it must be jumpered as a slave drive and the originaol drive jumpered as master.

Then the PS/2 drive needs to be partitioned as an extended DOS partiton with fdisk. WHen this happens it will also be tagged as a logical DOS drive.

When you reboot it will show up as a new drive and can be formatted for use.i partitioned the slave drive using killdisc, which is a result of executing the program. to add the hdd so that my computer not only recognizes it as hardware in profiles, but be given a drive letter as well (in my case G), i went into autoexec.bat and added smartdrv.exe, and in config.sys, the line, device=himem.sys. copying these files from the XP install disc, i went into install program which walked me through the rest.  So your problem is resolved then?   i hope so. i will know shortly, setup completes soon. i just think its odd im installing windows twice (c: and g:).  at the os choose screen, i have 2 choices. does this mean both drives r not integrated?ok, now i think its resolved.  im typing this one on my g drive.  c drive looks like its accessible.  i thought that adding this hard drive would just give me an extra letter on my c drive, but as it turns out, the g drive runs on its own configuration.  did i do something wrong?  or is this how having an extra hdd acts?and this one is from the c drive.  i think i get what happened.  what would be the benefit of doing this?  im sure it would make more sense if the other os was something different i guess.  would information exchange be faster depending on the drive i chose to run certain programs on?  would i be able to toggle between the two seamlessly? or are they independent of each other, and cant access the same resources at the same time?

The sound on my computer has gone crazy. One minute it was fine, the next minute, everything went really echoey and distorted.

It sounds almost like I'm in a huge music hall and everything is echoing off the roof and walls, but at the same time someone is attempting to play an electric guitar with a frazzled amp and way too MUCH overdrive.

It's like this for every single sound my computer MAKES, and it's now impossible to listen to a song properly or speak to someone online.

Does anybody know what might have caused this or how it could be fixed?forgot to say, my card is an intel graphics media accelerator 900, and I'm using windows xp, pentium 4.

and I wasn't doing ANYTHING out of the ordinary when ir happened, i just played a song on windows media player and noticed it sounded... weird.Well if it is INTERNAL sound card try muting the 3D if not then go to Start-> Control Panel-> Sound and Audio devices and make sure the correct one is selected on all of them. [glb]Flame[/glb]OS is windows xp, nothing new to the computer that I can remember no SPY ware or VIRUS I cant find any thing wrong with it all connections are in tight everything seems fine except the slow startup and the very loud cd drive.Strange how another drive would do this as WELL.... How does the other drive connect? USB? It sounds like your computer might be sending it to much POWER, or trying to make it spin faster than it is able to...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Delete it in Device MANAGER and let WIndows reinstall it when booting up again. Does it make that noise with and without a CD inserted?Do you have NERO?

Solve : Intel 955X mega install problems?

Answer»

I recently purchased a brand new motherboard (Asus P5WD2), brand new processor (Intel Pentium D 830), brand new memory (1GB PC 4200), AND brand new VIDEO card (Radeon x850 XT PE PCI-E), and put it all completely together, and TURN the power on, only to get absolutely NO video signal to my monitor, just a blank screen, and a blinking monitor light (indicating there is no signal to the monitor - like it's turned off). All of the fans turn on, my drives are powered, but still no video. I even made sure to plug in both the 12V power AND the EZ plug power. I've tried multiple monitors, tried a different regular PCI video card in different PCI slots, tried putting the memory in every slot, still the same result with no video. This prompted me to T purchase another board, this time an Abit AW8 Max. Once again, put everything together, and same result with no video.

I've put alot of computers together before, but I am COMPLETELY stumped and frustrated beyond belief as to what could be causing this. If anyone has ANY IDEA what the crap is going on with my system, please let me know....I forgot to mention that the RAM that I'm using is good too, so the problem is not a bad RAM stick.Reseat all hardware and MAKE certain that all connectors are in place.I've reseated it twice on 2 motherboards...No beeps?

Do all fans operate? No beeps, and yes all the fans run fine. I just got off the phone with Abit Tech support and they think the processor's bad, which i was thrilled to hear.

Thanks for trying to help me though, I really appreciate it.Read the mobo manual......the jumpers may need to be moved....

Can someone please tell me how to hook up the cables for a second DISK drive, so that it will not interfere with the existing DVD-ROM? I would like to install a CDR/RW disk drive.
Should the second drive be the SLAVE or the Master? I'm running XP and the existing drive is currently SLAVE.

lake2333C Drive = PRIMARY Master (unless maybe a SCSI controller is involved)
D Drive = Secondary Master
E Drive = Primary Slave
F Drive = Secondary Slave

Look on the drives to see how the jumpers should be set.

1. ASSUMING that you have ONE HDD allready installed and the CD-ROM connected as slave:

Connect an IDE cable to IDE connector 2 on the mainboard. There is no other way.

2. It should be Master or Slave depending on the other device connected to the IDE cable.

In case of no other device connected, remove the JUMPER or set it to Master.

Solve : Intermec 5055 Power Solution Needed?

Answer»

So, I have in my hands an Intermec 5055 mobile COMPUTER.  It's of course made for use in a vehicle.  I want to use it in my house though and am trying to find a SOLUTION.  I've seen a power cable with the round end and 3 holes on 1 end, and a standard 3 prong grounded plug on the other (The kind that plugs into your wall outlet at home).  Unfortunately, I didn't think it would be smart to just use that cord on this, not knowing if without some sort of regulation of power, it might blow out the power on the unit.  So, can someone please help me find the cheapest possible solution to this.  Also, the power limit for the plug on the computer is 12V DC power, and 2,8A MAX.  I've included a picture of the plug on the unit itself.

http://epsfiles.intermec.com/eps_files/eps_man/962054004C.pdf

Any AC to DC regulated power supply that OUTPUTS 12VDC 2.8A will work.  Here's a surplus one from Intermec:  http://www.mpja.com/productview.asp?product=15896+PS

You'll have to fabricate an adapter to the connector.Looking at the adapter, I don't see how I can fabricate the other end.  The cable that came with the unit (which has the female version of the plug on both ends...) is, by far, thicker than the cord I see on the surplus unit.  Anyone else have any other ideas besides just "fabricating" one?CONTACT Intermec and ask them.

Solve : non-detection of cd-rw drive?

Answer»

Hello, I've been having a bit of trouble with my CD-RW DRIVE lately.

I have a Sony VAIO PCG-Z1VA laptop, and my cd-rw drive is a Matshita ujda755 dvd/cdrw. My computer seems to think that this drive is a CD-ROM drive and not a cd-rw drive. Under "My Computer," the drive's NAME si "DVD/CD-RW." However, when I right click to "Properties," I can't change the burning options, because there isn't a tab for me to do so.

Also, I tried using both Roxi Easy-CD Creator (which does support my cd-rw drive), as well as the Windows XP PROGRAM to burn a CD, but neither one detects my drive as a CD-RW drive.

Help is greatly APPRECIATED. THANK you!Have you checked the Sony web site or forums? I am assuming this is an internal drive.

Solve : Black screen crash in 3d games?

Answer»

I am looking for knowledgable types to help me diagnose this annoying issue (or at least maybe to confirm or correct my thinking about it).

Basically, the rig in my SIG has been acting up in intensive 3d games. Well, in HL2 and F.E.A.R. anyway (and the Age of Empires III demo, which is not so gpu intensive, I'd guess). What happens is after 10-15 minutes in F.E.A.R. and 20-30 minutes in HL2/CS:S (and pretty much exactly 10 mins in the AoE III demo) there is an explosion of coloured pixels on a black screen, then the monitor loses its signal, there is no more sound, and I have to hard reboot.

It is only these games that present a problem, however. I have successfully played hours of Dungeon Siege II, Fable: The Lost Chapters, Psi-Ops, GTA San Andreas, Boiling Point and Fahrenheit with no problems at all, all at maxed settings.

Now, this rig *used* to play HL2 fine six or so months ago. Since then I have added a SATA HDD and a tv card and replaced 2x512 sticks of ram with 2x1024.

I have removed the tv card, unplugged the new drive, given the gfx card a dedicated molex, reinstalled older drivers, turned up the cpu fan speed, restored default clock speeds, cleaned the dust out of the gpu fan. Still the same problem.

Most people seem to think there are 3 possibilities:
1. Bad memory stick(s). I have pretty much ruled this out, THOUGH, as all other games play fine, and memtest and prime95 will run happily for days with no errors. I could possibly make a trip to my dad's and borrow his ram to check it out, but I'm not sure if it's looking likely enough to help to be worth the effort. Agree/disagree?
2. Power issues. I have also ruled this out of my thinking as the psu has powered everything I now have connected in the past with no problems and the gpu is on a molex with no other devices.
3. Overheating GPU. This is the one I am left with. I have tried running with the side of the case off, and this *seems* to buy me a few more minutes on average in F.E.A.R, but this might be just my perception. I have tried alt-tabbing out of FEAR to the gpu temp monitor, and it gets up to 90-92C before crashes. This seems very hot, but I have read, I'm sure, that 6800GTs can go up to 120C without damage?

One other thing: in event viewer when I restart after a crash there are always between 3 and 6 entries for Event: 2, Source: nvatabus, description: device identified. Is that significant? It means nothing to me, and is listed as 'information' rather than 'error', but it's always there.

Any help/ideas I would be extremely grateful for, enough to consider naming my firstborn in your honour...You Don't need to name your firstborn GX1_Man, but I, like you, think it is a heat issue with your Gfx card. Are more case fans an option? Does it go fine for hours with normal tasks - webs surfing, etc. If so, then the higher requirements of the game seem to excite it beyond coolness.  That is a pretty warm temp!

I would rule out #1 and 2 for the reasons you mentioned, except I didn't SEE that you mentioned the name and specs for your PSU.GX1_Man... hmm, well I only said I'd consider it

In racking my brains over this and specifically why it only happens in HL2 now when it didn't before, it suddenly occured to me that, of course, I'd moved house since then, and the pc is now in a different room, and in a new computer desk that doesn't allow so much AIR movement. Aha!

The only doubt I have here, though, is that I get none of the usual graphical corruption you'd expect with overheating gfx cards before it crashes...

More system fans aren't really an option as I have used up all the slots for them already and I don't want to dremel my case.

My PSU is still a possibility, though, as it is cheap generic one from ebuyer. Rated by them at 450W, but I wouldn't trust it too much.

But, yeah, the only time crashes ever happen are with the three games I mentioned: HL2, FEAR and the AoE III demo (which, surely, is not as graphically demanding as, say, Fable, which runs fine?!).

Thanks for the reply. Think I will try moving the pc to another room with better airflow...

Edit: Well, moving the pc and leaving the side of the case off made no difference at all! I did notice that the gpu hsf was very hot to the touch, but it still crashes after 10 mins whether the side of the case is on or off! Surely the case being open should make *some* difference to temperature?

Anyone got any opinion as to whether it'd be worth buying a new hsf, some cleaing solution and AS5 to try to cool this card? Or am I missing some other possibilities? Before you go out and purchase a new HSF try running it with the side panel off and a small desk size fan pointed at the vid-card...
If the results are satisfactory then it confirms a heat issue.

patio.

p.s. what brand of PSU is it ? ?

Yeah, you know I've been searching the house for a desk fan all day. I could have sworn there was one in the garage or the spare room or... somewhere, but no

The PSU has a label on announcing it is made by ENCER. NEVER heard of them. It's probably a piece of junk, tbh.

I found something interesting just now, though: I got hold of a spare 512mb stick of ram from a friend, and stuck that in in place of my 2 1024 modules. Result: the Age of Empires III demo no longer crashes! It's juddery as sin, but it doesn't black-screen crash anymore. Hmmmm.

I can't really check if FEAR runs now, with only 512mb in the system, but it certainly makes all this look like a RAM issue after all.

A question, though: why would only certain 3d games but not others crash like this if there's some ram/motherboard conflict, but everything else run fine, and memtest and prime95 report no errors? I am bamzumped and gaboozled!Power Supply....

patio.  You think so? As I say, I haven't ruled this out, but I have no idea how a psu problem would manifest. Does it fit the profile that the crashes would always come at pretty much exactly the same time after starting one of the problem games (i.e. 10-12 mins in FEAR; 20-25 mins in HL2)?

Heck, maybe I could do with a new psu anyway. Wouldn't hurt, I suppose. Could always carry it over to my next build...PSU's can have heat issues too. Any PSU that cannot deliver full power up to 50C is a waste of time and money. I suspect that is your problem. I have seen 450W PSU's fail miserably where a 250W worked. Cheap PSU's will deliver full power at about 29C (roughly body temp) and lose approximately 10% for every degree above that. A PSU typically runs at 45-50C so your el cheapo is likely failing when demand increases. With the specs on your system you should get a really good quality PSU. It is the heart of your system. Quote

One other thing: in event viewer when I restart after a crash there are always between 3 and 6 entries for Event: 2, Source: nvatabus, description: device identified.

It often helps to read the screen.
Try Googling for nvatabus

I'm not sure if memtest etc can give 100% accuracy so there is still a cloud over the ram.

I have had a bad experience with MSI mobos (3) and ram sockets. *just saying*

Having said all that the time line sure suggests heat.  Disable all backgrounds processes.....except systray/explorer......and anti-virus programs......and disconnect from the net...........buy a ps2/xbox/nintendo box.............update graphics drivers.....

my computer is about 5 years old with an 800 mthz processer and a soltek motherboard in an ATX midi tower. can i upgrade the processor only or do i need to also INSTALL a new mainboard and can i get one to fit the case. thx in advance. walt. Do you know the model of your motherboard? The book should tell you how fast you can upgrade to and what CPU it takes http://www.esupport.com/global/upgradesteps.cfm this will show you how much RAM your computer can take and what is the Maximum CPU speed you can use.Chances are slim that it will upgrade to anything near current levels of performance, if you want that.

Motherboard and CPU upgrade recommended, but what are you wanting to do that you cannot now? Some people get bitten with the upgrade bug without a need. How much RAM and hard drive space? What computer make and model?

If you want to run XP Home Edition an 800MHz processor should do but you need 512 MB or more RAM.

I use a 1000GHz PIII with 768 MB SDRAM and a 7,200 rev/min drive with an 8 MB drive-cache and XP works just fine.

Click the link below and take the XP Compatability test at PC Pitstop to see if anything else needs to be upgraded such as the BIOS and download and install Everest to give you more details on your mainboard and RAM, etc. What do you want your pc to do........play games is my guess......consider the costs......is it cheaper to buy a GAMING machince.........?

Solve : a little help, thankx?

Answer»

i just bought a new motherboard and a new cpu for my computer and its the first time i try this. when i put everything together and set to optomized setting it WONT post. i tried without the opt setting too but still didnt work. after the BIO it loaded things up and takes me to a menue where you choose to run safe mode, last known good configeration and start computer normally. i tried all of them but it just takes me back to setting again....so, any suggestion? i dont have anything to help cuz i just moved....  Do you still have Windows on the hard drive from a previous installation with a different Mobo and CPU? If so I would recommend a TOTAL reformat and reinstall. That might solve this problem easily AND prevent multiple other ones down the road.

that was what others told me. how do u reinstall OS? does system recovery cd work?Yes, but backup any data files first. You need to format the drive and reinstall, and a recovery disk usually does just that. How i do that when i GET get to the window?i put the system recovery cd in and  i tried to use the bio to boot the cd rom but it say "Erro! PC System not SUPPORTED".....I suspect you will need a real OS disk.

Solve : Re: Graphics Dilemma?

Answer»

Why did you start a new thread?  Original one is here.

Power supply ratings are not standardized.  Your 180W may or may not be sufficient.  The ISSUE is:  why upgrade onboard AGP for HI performance PCI?  Given that your Dell was never intended to be UPGRADED in this manner, live with what you have, or just get a new computer. Quote

...The SYSTEM has what it has... I'm not trying to BUILD a super machine, just merely trying to get by with what I have.

Than do nothing at all.

Solve : FDD refuses to write.?

Answer»

I recently bought a Dell cpi laptop from ebay, everything is working fine apart from the floppy drive which refuses to save my work.

It reads the floppy OK but when I try to save on the disc it comes up with disk is write protected. Ive made sure the tab is accross and Ive even put in a replacement FDD drive. Ive also tried to format the disk in windows and in dos MODE but it still comes up with the same message.

If anyone has any ideas i would like to here from you.

Thanks

StuartThe tab on the diskette is supposed to be left open.Geez. Post the same question only once please! lol

[glb]Flame[/glb]Sorry, Its the first time ive used one of these forums I'm REALLY sure what i'm doing, lol.

The tab is in the correct place to save, although i have tried it both ways just in case. Is the FDD detected?Yes, the drive reads ok but will not write.

I did see a similar problem on another site, the person was told she would have to replace the motherboard. Can you not contact the previous owner and inquire on this problem?Place a blank floppie in the drive and format it.....or make a boot disk to check the fdd drive......in windows do it.....or another test would be load a floppy with data on it.....in the dos command .......use the dir......A:\>dir....what o/s is on this laptop....or SPEND a few bob and get one of these>http://www.lindy.com/us/productfolder/04/40411/index.phpHave tried all of the above but none of them work.

The only solution I have come up with is to use the floppy drive on the external cable, (it works that way) and just keep the cdrom drive in the laptop permanently as they are interchangeable.

I dont know if that sheds any light on the problem but its not a problem to use it like that anyway.

Thanks

Solve : Only 2gigs shown on a 40gig HD?

Answer»

Hi there, I've got a big problem with the hardrive at my girlfriends house. They have installed a 40 gig hardrive, but the computer only shows 2 gigs of space.
Anyone know what's going on?

Also.. I tried giving them my old computer, but when I try to install windows on my old hardrive, it tells me it cannot find FDISK. Same thing HAPPENS when I put their old hardrive in my comp..

The first problem is all I really need to know for now, but if anyone knows about the second one, please feel free to help  is there stuff installed on this 40gig HDD?

Or is it Brand new?

R0SSWas it a new hard drive or a used one? If used, did it used to work OK? Is it read as 2 gig in the BIOS/setup screens? What type of drive? The more details, the better!

What operating system are we talking and how are you trying to do this?I do believe it was used, though I'm unable to ask them right now. They're running Windows 2000 Pro and the HD is a Samsung SP0411N. It is only SHOWING 2Gigs of available space everywhere I can see.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me  If it was formatted FAT16, then the max partition is 2 gig. You will need to FDISk and repartition.Looks like they have used fdisk and forgotten to 'Enable large drive support.'

Can't you USE the 2000 CD to re-partition and FULL format the drive?

Where is our resident 2000 GURU in this moment of need?  Thanks guys, I'll give it a try now. What happened?

Solve : Changed CMOS battery, now dead computer?

Answer»

I am new in this forum...I HOPE you can help me.

I was having problems with my HP 8660 during booting due to CMOS ( I think). So I changed the battery in the computer. It worked fine for about an hour, then it died. It is completely DEAD.

I would apprecaite your comments and help.

Thanks
FrankChanging the battery doesn't usually mean the computer is dead. Do you at least see the power supply fan working? If not then it was only your power supply. Test it out by unplugging it from the motherboard. If the powersupply works and when you plug it into your motherboard and it doesnt then your motherboard is dead. Thanks for your response.

Your suggesting that it MAY be the power supply or the motherboard. Does it have any connection to the cmos battery?

How do I check if it is the power supply vs. the mother BOARD?

Thanks again
FrankCheck by unplugging the power supply from the motherboard.

Usually if the motherboard is dead the power supply wont run so that is why you unplug it  from the moterboard first.

Solve : Can I replace the driver?

Answer»

I would like to know if I can have the driver REPLACED and installed a DVD Burner. If it is POSSIBLE I would like to kown which Brand DVD/CD Burner for IBM laptop would be the better and where can I GO to do it.What is the make and model #? You would probably be best SERVED by checking with IBM/Lenovo as all laptops are proprietary. You just can't go get one "off the shelf".

Solve : loud noise on startup?

Answer»

Hope some one can help.  My son's dell is only a year old.  Yesterday when he turned it on, it MADE a SOUND like a PLANE taking off....really loud!  he turned off the plug.  Next time we tried it same thing.....is it going to explode?  Help! What model? Have you taken off the cover to look INSIDE? Has it been moved recently? Sometimes a wire can get caught rubbing in one of the fan blades.

Or it could be taking off.

Let us know what you find.aha, it has been moved recently....I will check out the wire in the fan idea...I like that!  Thanksok, so I tried it again, while looking in the back, and the fan is blowing reaaly hard, that's what is making the noise.  doesn't SEEM like its bumping anything, just blowing really hard.  Any ideas? Is that the fan on the power supply, on the processor itself or a case fan? What model Dell?

I don't suppose it's still under warranty? Probably not, especially if it's a Dimension model. Its a dimension 8400, purchased 7/04.  The fan in question is in the "heat sink and blower assembly."Those are relatively cheap and easy to install. what kind of processor?

www.newegg.com for a good replacement.I am still under warranty and am chatting with IndiaLOL!

I know exactly what you are talking about. The question is, do they?  Could it possibly be the CDRom unit ? ? ?

They sometimes do this right before they are ready to fail completely.

Solve : Is my motherboard fried??

Answer»

When I took out my MODEM in my cpu, the computer was still on and now when I turn it on, nothing shows up on the monitor and also you can only see the green and red light on my computer. The hard drive spins and the fans turn on, its just that nothing shows up on the monitor. Is my motherboard fried? Would it also be possible that my video card got fried too? But the fan was still running on it.

Quote

When I took out my modem in my cpu, the computer was still on...

Why would you do this?
Who knows what's damaged...could be anything or everything.  If fan is on, 12V from power SUPPLY is still working.
Ya, I know it was pretty dumb of me.   I hope my whole system isnt fried. Someone is looking at it.Steven:

I'm glad you didn't get electrocuted!

It may be that the video card was just jarred loose when you removed the modem expansion card.  Simply reseating it in the slot may do the trick.  You will still have to PAY the repair shop for the labor, however.

Blessings to you,
DocLol thx ur too kind! LUCKILY the person can fix it for free because I know him, but I might have to pay for the parts if they did get fried. I hope my evga 6800 didnt get fried because I don't want to pay another 200 for it. Or maybe I can get it RMAdYeah, generous geeks make good friends!
