Solve : Sony Laptop Screen Problem?

Answer»

The problem is that my laptop screen's brightness has just completely gone, leaving things very dark and barely visible. It's like it has no backlight, just the image. I don't think it's anything to do with the brightness settings so I suspect the screen may be damaged somehow. Other than that, it functions well enough without any other problems. I have had this problem before and it sorted itself out LAST time, however, I don't want to rely on it this time, plus it has been like this for a week. It is a Sony VAIO PCG-GRT815E. What SHALL I do?

Will I have to GET it repaired? How MUCH will it cost? Where can I get this done? (I live in the UK) Can I get Sony to repair it?

(Excuse my spelling/grammar as I am having trouble even seeing the screen.) Quote

I doubt if it is user servicable. Get a quote and details from Sony. Maybe you will get LUCKY and find that this is a known issue and you can get a free one! Doubtful, but what have you got to lose?

Solve : LCD Monitor went blank - and interesting 'service'?

Answer»

First, thank you both Merlin and di65 for answering my post.  (I've gone to the 'linked' sites, and really do appreciate your help).

I've just returned from taking my F1702 LCD panel Certified Data monitor back to London Drugs (since it's their store brand) - where I've shopped for years and purchased 2 computers (both Certified Data and nary a problem), a scanner, printer and all-in-one etc (and this monitor was purchased there, as well)  and always been pleased with their normally wonderful staff.

But I was told in person  this evening what their representative had said on the phone earlier - that  "there may not be any parts available" to repair this particular LCD monitor - but I could pay them $50.00 'estimate fee' and they would phone me on Monday to LET me know if parts are even available.

I suggested that surely an 'estimate fee' would apply only when 'guestimating' the cost of repairs themselves - not to tell me if they even have parts?? And to make matters even more interesting, the representative then wondered why I would 'bother to have the monitor repaired anyway' - since they have come down from over $600 to about $350 over the past 2 years since it was purchased - and yup, he suggested I simply buy a new Certified Data.
(I wonder why he would think anyone in their right mind would make a repeat purchase of a brand where he maintains  'parts may or may not be available' should it need a repair? Eek!).

So London Drugs now has my magical monitor - and sadly, caught 'between a rock and a hard place', I paid the $50 'estimate fee' in order to learn if they even have parts for repairs.  Heavy sigh.

If they have parts - and if the repairs don't cost a fortune - I'll have it repaired.  But sadly, never again will I feel quite the same way about purchasing from London Drugs - and even sadder, can never again risk purchasing anything made by Certified Data.  Drat!

With kind regards,
Mara

If you're forced to get a new one and you have the space, a crt is still the way to go.Hi Fed,

Even THOUGH I work with mostly graphics and photo editing, do you still feel at CRT is better than an LCD monitor?

(Only wish they made thin CRT's - have such limited space here, too).

Kindest regards,
MaraAll the reading I've done says crts have better colour. Thanks for the advise, Fed ... an a CRT is so much cheaper, too!

A bit of info on London drug ...... They're are a very LARGE chain operation ........and most of their locations has a very large Audio / Video section .........They carry a varied selection of complete packages as well as barebones kits , components of all types as well as a good selection of software....in short , they can look after almost all of your requirements . Most of their locations have in store service techs. Unfortunately Mara .....had a problem with a monitor which only comes with a 1 year warantee ........
That monitor , LIKE most others was built in the orient somewhere ( as are the majority of other components )
If I'm looking for a part , or some memory or any other incidental computer related item .........the first place I check is London Drug.   I will continue to use them .......Sometimes things simply fail .......we have all had that experience...........I don't think if fair to cease to do business with or lose trust in a Company simply because a product was purchased there and failed a year after the warantee had run out .....

LOL.......Bloody *censored* I really went on a rant ........LOL
But I wanted to set the record straight .

DonHi Don,

It's okay to 'rant' - grin - and actually you are quite right, normally London Drugs has great service.

I think the hardest part of this whole thing was the odd attitude of the gentlemann in the computer section ... can sadly understand if somethings not fixable, but how odd that he seemed to think it was 'funny' (literally ha ha) that parts 'may or may not be available' for their own product - and then wondering why I wouldn't want to buy another monitor also made by Certified Data, knowing that if this too goes poof, parts may or may not be available to fix it either.

Won't buy another Certified Data product - only because I can't afford to take the risk financially ... but other than this one 'odd' person in their computer department, I agree totally - London Drugs is a great store.

Kindest regards,
Mara

Solve : Laptops and external tv tuners?

Answer»

Ok I'm LOOKING for a laptop for $1000-$2000 that will be fast enuff to save movies as well as copy screen shots of my xbox games.

I also like to use Photoshop alot for editing images and I play some games but nothing with great graphics (just football simulations, besides being resource hogs they arent bad)

Last but not least, I'd like to be able to get online at my favorite hot spots... A guy on the chat suggested these two things below:

http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?sku=5479954&SourceID=k40132: TV Tuner

http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cmod.to?seg=HHO&coid=-28641&sel=0&rcid=-26367&ccid=1291021: Laptop

my concern with this is the recuirements for the TV Tuner is 700 GHz while the laptop only has 500... isn't that RIGHT? Any better computer suggestions I will take happily...You believe you can spend $ 1000 to $ 2000 dollars and only get a 500MHz Laptop?

As Will from that *censored* SHOW Will & Grace would say,

Quote

Honey, it's 2005

What I can deduct from the WEBSITE you have provided us with, the Laptop contains a 3.46 GigaHertz processor.

ATI RADEON 9000

Note: I never watch Will & Grace.Ok, so there is plenty enuff GHz for the tv tuner? thnx alot, as u can TELL Im not a computer guy...Yes, the Laptop most likely has a 3046 Hertz processor and you require 700 Hertz for the TV card. As you previously stated.

Solve : How to put a laptop screen on a desktop pc?

Answer»

Does anyone know if it's possible to put a laptop screen on a desktop pc?

I've got this working screen and a broken laptop mother board (the processor is burnt sigh....), it would help me save space on my table.

This is a technical question and maybe an expert may give is word on it, I think that is possible but advice is better.

Thanks for any reply.

It is posssible........if you can unsolder the LEADS from the mobo to a serial cable  for  a monitor.. does the laptop power up!......i know the cpu is shot......Possible...Yes.
Practical...No.I was thinking that if I can take off the screen, how the *censored* would I know the PINS function
That would be a figure out GAME lol

I think it's a CONNECTOR that GOES to the mother board (like the ide cable to the HDs - you all know), but I checked HP site and the manuals say nothing, kinda hard... if you need it's an Omnibook Xe3 gc.

If I could do that maybe buying for cheap a screen from ebay (instead of a 200$ LCD screen )
I'll wait, that's all I can do for now.

!thanks for your replies guys!

Solve : hardware recommendations?

Answer»

hi, i'm not sure if this is the right forum to be posting this, but here i go (sry of it is the wrong forum)

I RECENTLY was given an assignment in one of my Year 11 computing classes...

It says that i am supposed to recommend certain things to an imaginary company, with some budget limitations.

of this, there are two i am having trouble in doing

Can someone please TELL me (or direct me to somewhere that can) some hardware recommendations for a SERVER that can handle DCHP and DNS

and back up OPTIONS to provide redundancy in case of a hardware crash, a fire or other type of emergency.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.....I think for that question you have to go to HomeworkHope.com   At least you admitted it was homework. And you were polite, which also puts a check mark in the positive column.

Dell is a leading manufacturer of servers. Check out their site, and call their customer service with some basic questions once you have had a look at their product LINE. Just don't tell them you're doing a homework assignment.

Solve : Computer Crash...?

Answer»

Hi, when I try and push the START BUTTON my computer (on light, one of the cd drives & all the fans) comes on for a split SECOND then dies?

I have tried replacing the power supply and CPU chip and thought I should check the actual on switch but I am not sure how to do this, can anyone help?

The motherboard is a P6BX-A+ (in an older Mind Computer 600mhz) and the switch has 2 LEADS on a three pin connector so the 1st and 3nd leads are active, the manual shows lead 1 = 1+, lead 2 = 2+ & lead 3 = 3-

Any other suggestions as to this issue would be APPRECIATED...

Thanks,
SteveYou have listed what you have done so far to try to repair it, but what exactly have you done to break it?

Solve : Error loading OS - Hard drive full??

Answer»

Hi guys,
I actually have a single hard DRIVE of 30 Gb with no partition from Seagate.
I have a 1,2Ghz pc with 384Mb memory installed and OS is Win XP Pro.
I've been using my pc for 8 years now and, though my hard drive was almost full (28Gb used), I tried to put a dvd on it, so that I think the drive became completely full. Indeed, I got an error message (don't remember what is was), tried to reboot but then I was faced with an other message saying "Error loading the operating system". Can't start the pc ANYMORE.

A friend of mine put my hard drive on his machine and the drive SEEMED to be recognized in Explorer but wouldn't open. A click on the HD properties showed "File system: RAW" and 0 bytes used.

I will no doubt buy another pc but I wish I could recover my data (mainly pictures and doc files).

How could I do?
Any help would be appreciated Quote

It looks like you need a RAW file system Recovery program.

30 GB = 27.94 GB of binary drive-space and you need 15%, or 4.20 GB free-space for defrag to run, so it has far too much data on it.

You MUST have space for the paging file to propogate, as Windows needs a minimum 1·5 times the amount of installed RAM in drive-space for it to do so.

384 MB x 1·5 = 576 MB

What RAM modules do you have? 3 x 128 MB?

XP can run on as little as 64 MB so try taking the RAM modules out to get down to 128 MB and see if it will start in safe mode. Then follow the clean up procedure on the link below and if you have an XP CD and have the (hidden) I386 folder on your drive you can delete that as well.

I would just buy another hard drive, 7,200 rev/min with an 8 MB drive buffer and add some more RAM, say 3 x 256MB or 2 x 512 MB if your mainboard will accept it.

My mainboard will take 3 x 512 MB but 768 MB is enough for my use of the machine.

Can you start with a bootdisk and remove some stuff? No, I wasn't able to do that,
BUT I finally did succeed in recovering my data, putting the damaged hard drive as slave on a friend's pc again, and then running a recovery software. I was able to copy all my important files on a dvd. Then I reformatted the whole drive with a fresh XP. Everything's fine now.

Thank you for your helpDon't forget your protection against the nasties.
Don't forget Windows update.
Don't forget to get the latest drivers. And keep an eye on your HDD space down the road.

Solve : Uninstalling Wireless Network Adaptor?

Answer»

I have Windows ME.

I WANT to REINSTALL my USB wireless network adaptor, but when I try to uninstall it, by REMOVING it from Device Manager, it appears to only partially uninstall.

When I try to reinstall it it doesn't even need the disc it came with. I need to fully uninstall because I'm having trouble with settings, such as unwanted password and connection PROMPTS, even THOUGH I haven't set any passwords etc.

I have tried changing settings but reinstalling it seems easier, as I can't achieve the desired settings as it is.

Thank you.
Are you reinstalling the software, then rebooting and adding the hardware later? That is the preferred order. Usually when the software re-installs it will remove previous versions of itself.

Solve : Dial-up speeds?

Answer»

Hello,

No matter what computer, modem or ISP I have ever used my connection speeds have ALWAYS been around 26.4-28.8 kps. A friend of mine brought his laptop over and CONNECTED to the internet using the same line that my machine uses and his speed was 40.0, thats the highest speed that has ever been established in my house and it blew my mind. I had him use my ISP on his laptop and he again got 40.0kps, I used his ISP on this machine and of course I got 26.4kps. The modem on his laptop is a Toshiba and mine is a brand new (2 days old) US ROBOTICS v.92 56k pci faxmodem.

Is there something I can do or settings I can change to try and get faster speeds? Or does it just have something to do with the fact that it's a laptop, that doesnt make sense to me either but before my friend got this laptop the best speeds he ever got with his mac was ALSO 28.8. Even though this is a new modem I'm half tempted to buy a toshiba model and see if that would do anything. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ThanksYou are looking at the speed between your computer & your modem (port speed).

Solve : Computer power supply question.?

Answer»

Good / Morning / Afternoon / Evening or Night

Computer power supply question.

Can I use a computer PSU off load, without it switching hard over and blowing up?

I am running two USB to IDE converters on my computer which both have independant 1.5 amp PSU's, and would like to use a spare 350W computer PSU instead of the two separate ones, which get very hot.

The power supply I intend using would at times be off load when changing DISK drives.

Thanks in anticipation

George

I believe that most PSU manuals will advise you to always have a load (Such as a HDD or a CD-ROM drive) connected.

However, in your case, the PSU would be connected to a Mainboard. To the mainboard, additional components would be connected.

That also COUNTS as a load.  Thanks for the reply, The PSU would not be connected to the main board so I take it that I would need to simulate a load (dummy load). Unfortunately there are times when no load would have to be applied

Regards GeorgeBefore you continue, you may wish to contact the manufacturer of the PSU and ASK technical support if attaching a load is neccessary and if yes, what type of load would be the safest.

Solve : Scandisk keeps freezing?

Answer»

Completely spastic newbie here.

I tried to run a defrag and it won't do it until I run a scandisk because there are errors on the drive. When I run the scandisk I have two problems:

1. It keeps restarting - seems as though something is RUNNING in the background and allocating files

2. It eventually freezes my computer - never at the same point twice.

Can you please help me to determine what is running in the background and also if the errors on the hard drive are something I can FIX myself?

Thanks! Can you run it in safe mode?Which OPERATING system are you using?Windows ME.

I put the computer into safe mode and the scandisk worked, (yay! thanks for that suggestion) saying that it found no errors. I then tried to run the defrag again but it still says the disk has errors. I ran it without checking for errors and it completed, but I'm concerned that I still have errors on the drive.

Also, I get errors every now and again or the computer freezes and I have to reboot.

Thanks so much for your helpWhat errors......Run defrag in safe mode checking for errors.Disable SCREENSAVER..........and run defrag..........disk clean-up........how did  you shutdown the system......? scan for virus worms etc.....defrag will run......it has nothing to do with scandisk.....That was for scandisk, now he has a defrag problem.
It's probably power settings, screen saver or some crappy software running in the background.

Solve : Source for power supply?

Answer»

I suspect my power supply is dead...so I brought my PC to a repair shop and was told that the power supply is a PROPRIETARY item and will ahve to be ordered. The PC is a Pavilion 8660C. Anyone else come across this before? What are my options?

Thanks
FrankHow old is the pc......and have you modified it.

What makes you think its  the psu?If it is an HP it is a proprietary power supply. Failrly expensive and underpowered, but will be appropriate for that unit.

An alternative would be to buy an old identical unit, and harvest parts off it as needed, if it is too expensive.  If that is an older model, this may be the better option.  What was your cost estimate? I am 100% sure your repairman is telling the truth.

List the faults.....then find the CURE......it does not do to jump to conclusions. Thanks Merlin 2 and GX1.

I am not sure it is the psu...the machine just died last week, and there was no life at all.

Windows98 thought it was the psu or MOTHERBOARD. I took it to the repairshop and they think it is the psu. But cannot get generic parts to fit.

The PC is about 5 years old, and HP 8660C.

What do you think I should do now.

FrankWell if it's not the power supply for sure, I would try to make sure. I thought they must have tested it in some way to DETERMINE that.

This model appears to only be supported for Windows 98SE, with a PIII-533 chipset and onboard graphics. Limited expansion and no upgradeability, so I wouldn't spend a whole lot. Replacement power supply (185 watts) from HP is $77 plus shipping, probably more than it is worth, unfortunately. A replacement 320 watt PSU is available for $34.99 here:

Solve : Network cards and IP addresses?

Answer»

My internet provider told me that if I wanted to change my IP address I had to purchase a new network card and install that on my computer.  However, before I spoke to that guy, another rep from technical support told me that my IP address will change automatically every 2 months.

Now I don't know who is right.

How do I change my IP address? (And just so no one is speculating, nothing illegal is going on here.  My husband and I are in ministry but it's a long story why we want our IP address changed).

I apologize if this question is not in the right subject area.

Thanks! What is wrong with the network card you have? A real old model?

I have never heard of an ISP changing your IP address automatically every 2 months. And I won't go into why on earth you would want to (unless you have a pirated version of Windows - LOL), but that just doesn't sound right.

Who is the ISP?

And please disregard the Tracker Pengun.Depending wich isp you have, a new network card will change your ip STRAIGHT away. Some isp will also change your ip from time to time.My ISP is comcast.  I don't have any pirated versions of any software on my computer.   I just want a new IP address and my ISP told me 2 different stories on how to get one.

It would be cool if the ISP did change my IP in 2 months, but if that isn't the case then I guess I'll have to get a new network card.  There's nothing wrong with my current network card, but I was told that's the only way I can  manually change my IP was to get a new card.Comcast is not being straight with you. They can assign a new one on their end.

patio.  A new NIC will not resolve this. Stay after Comcast, but I'm sure they will want to know why you want to change your IP so often.Comcast uses DHCP.  Fixed IP's cost extra.  If you want to "force" an IP change, changing the NIC (MAC id) is one way to do it.  Another way is to turn off the modem for a few days and hope that a new IP will be assigned.

Why do you want to change your IP?I just got this computer a few months ago, so I just got assigned this IP address.  The problem is that this IP address is blocked from a few christian websites, and the only way I can get in to the sites is to use a proxy server.  The proxy server takes forever.  I even had a few moderators from the websites send me links to help me access it, but this does not help.  I've been told that if an IP address got blocked, when they reassign that same IP address, that person's computer can also get blocked.

I don't wanna buy a new network card if this won't solve the problem.  I don't need my IP changed every 2 months either (although I wouldn't mind), I just need to get rid of my current IP address.JerseyGirl3578......
Quote

The problem is that this IP address is blocked from a few christian websites

Are you absolutely certain it's your IP address THATS being blocked ?  It's entirely possible that the Christian websites server has actually blocked your server for some reason ....... That might explain the double TALK you are receiving .  I just have to ask , why would any website block your IP address ...unless your views and theirs differ....and of course its their site and they have control over it ......and if that was the case they will just block you again regardless of what your IP address is .....
or ...am I missing something here .

AND ...havent you posted this issue before ....
Let us know

dl65

No I posted a separate issue and that was about proxy servers.

I have contacted the site administrator and he was gonna check on a few things on his end and get back to me in a few days.  But on another website there are days when I can get on and days that I can't.  The site administrator are actually friends of ours and I just contact him DIRECTLY when it happens.  Sometimes he doesn't UNDERSTAND why it happens either.  I thought it had something to do with my IP address.

Solve : My computer won't boot from CD!?

Answer»

My Windows installation is on it's last gasp of air and I need to reinstall it. The problem is, my Compal CL56 (an adequately powerful notebook COMPUTER) refuses to acknowledge that my CD drive exists until Windows is LOADED. As you are probably aware, you can't format the hard drive and install Windows FROM Windows. During the boot process, I press F2 to go to the setup thing, and it says my BIOS is 1.40.T1 or something like that. It also says "ATAPI NONE" which I think means "No CD drive detected: Fark you, loser!" I spent every last cent to my name on this computer, so losing it would quite literally be the end of the world for me. I'm completely out of ideas. I don't know if there is such a thing as an external CD drive with legacy USB support, and while knowing where I can find one would be nice, but do me no good as I'm completely penniless. What I need from all you nice people is a solution to make my CD drive recognized from the boot screen, not just Windows. I know it was nothing that I did to make it not recognize the drive, as it has always been this way since I got it. Perhaps the place I bought it from (Microexpress as the Microexpress CL5620) disabled booting from CD, which would really suck. If that's the case, is there a way around it? I don't think it's a problem with my Windows CD either, because I also have a Linux CD (Ubuntu 5.04) which my family's desktop computer boots from fine, but of course not my PRECIOUS personal CL56. I know I'm rambling, but I'm trying to provide as much information as possible. I know that the CL56 has two options for optical drives, one is a CD drive and the other a DVD+-RW drive. Mine is the DVD+-RW just so you know. My CL56's specs include a 2 GHz Pentium M, a/b/g WiFi, 1GB RAM (2x512), and 60GB 7200RPM hard drive. I am running Windows XP Professional SP2. If any more information is required to help me just ask! If any of you could solve my problem I would be more grateful than you can possibly imagine. Thank you for your time.Go into the BIOs, then standard CMOS features (or similar) and where it lists your drives highlight them in order:
usually pri master, pri slave, sec master, sec slave. Press enter and choose auto detect. If after that it still doesnt detect your drive then there is a hardware issue and you will need to get it checked.

If it does detect you may need to check the boot sequence to make sure that cdrom is before hdd.
You also need to press 'any key'when booting from the cd so the system knows you didn't leave it in the drive by mistake. Quote

It also says "ATAPI NONE" which I think means "No CD drive detected.

I spent every last cent to my name on this computer, so losing it would quite literally be the end of the world for me.

Perhaps the place I bought it from (Microexpress as the Microexpress CL5620) disabled booting from CD.

Click on the link below and head for the bootdisks section. You might as well download them all as you never know when you need one.

With the DELPART bootdisk in the floppy drive and the CD in the DVD drawer re-boot and see if the setup program starts.

Yep, you probably don't need DELPART but it should load the generic drivers for your DVD drive - if - the DVD drive will run on generic drivers. (?)......umm......

The CL56, as a SLIM and trim notebook computer, does not have a floppy drive.

It does have an SD Card slot though....

And how do I get to the BIOS? Is that what I'm seeing when I press F2 during boot? (it flashes really quick: "Press F2 to go to setup" The options on the screen I go to are VERY limited though, basicly just select what order to boot from, right now I have it set to check floppy first, then CD, then hard drive. Checking floppy is pointless though, as I don't have a floppy drive. By the way, would checking floppy count as checking legacy USB? Beause I'm considering getting an external legacy USB CD drive and booting from there) and what's a CMOS?Set it to boot from CD first then HDD...

Make sure you are using a bootable CD...borrow one if needed to TEST it out.

patio.  Let the laptop boot........then try the cd/dvd drive. Quote

In the BIOS change the floppy to disabled, then CD, then hard drive.

Solve : dvd drive problems?

Answer»

>:(my writer door will not open. i have two dvd drives  one was selected to write one to play dvds & read i would like to make my dvd  drive write now, as it has the capabilities.what should i do to tell my pc to ignore the nonoperatable drive and only recognize the other to read & write?I might be missing the point here, Joanna, but...

You don't have to tell your PC to ignore one drive and only "see" the other. When you put a CD or DVD in the drive you want to use, it EITHER autoplays or you access the files on it from My Computer under your Start Menu (then right-clicking on the appropriate drive icon and SELECTING Explore). And if you want to write SOMETHING to the DISK in that drive, the software you are using ASKS you to tell it what drive you want to copy to.

You may have damaged one or more parts beyond repair by overclocking or inappropriately connecting the hardware.

I SUGGEST that you inspect each piece of hardware for burn marks and immediatly reset the BIOS to its default VALUES to prevent further damage from your possible attempts to overclock (Meaning: Increasing voltage) Quote

This can not be CONSIDERED a good sign. Are you connected to a good and proper power supply, or is the computer connected directly to the utility pole?

Solve : transfering C: drive data from old computer to new?

Answer»

How do I transfer the data from my old C: drive to the C: drive of a new computer? My SON says that not all files will be tranfered, there are hidden files that will not be automatically be transfered. He also says that software can be purchased to help with this job. Any ideas?DEPENDS what files you mean.  There are 3 general CLASSIFICATIONS:  Operating SYSTEM files (Windows files), Applications files (Program files such as MS Office), Data files (Word documents, Excel files, photos).  When you say Data, I ASSUME you mean only the 3rd classification.  If, yes, they can copied in a number of different way, depends on how many and large they are.  You can copy them to a floppy disk, CD, or network the 2 computers and copy from one to the other.

Solve : Modifying the Northbridge fan?

Answer»

I own a Gigabyte 7N400Pro mainboard, which I currently use for gaming.

The Northbridge fan does not work when my videocard is connected, appearantly, it draws too much power even though it is FED by the Power Supply Unit. I have allready been sent another fan by Gigabyte and replaced it a very long time ago, but I recently noticed that the fan has NEVER worked with the videocard in place. (I am not looking to make it work, as I have another idea)

The northbridge fan becomes very hot without the fan.

Here is the idea I have:

First, a picture of the mainboard I use. The Northbridge fan is located underneath the AGP 8X logo which is a fan with a small heatsink hold onto the mainboard by two white plastic pins.

1. What is underneath the Northbridge heatsink?
2. How do I remove the northbridge heatsink?

If I were to take an older AMD COOLER, as shown below,

(An image of a cooler similair to the standard cooler has been included for the sake of reference)

and use a type of thermal glue to fasten it to the northbridge, connect the fan to the PSU and remove the metal clamp, would this have any effect at all?

1. I know that in the past, there was thermal glue that would not let go. Is this still being fabricated?

2. Would the Northbridge be able to tolerate the heatsinks weight?

3. Is this far fetched?

4. If this is IMPOSSIBLE to realise, could I remove the videocard heatsink (9800Pro/standard cooler) and glue the cooler onto the videocard? These you may wish to consider also>

I fitted an AMD retail heatsink to my Northbridge - had to trim it a little first (using a hacksaw). Drilled two holes and bolted it to mobo, with plastic washers underneath because PCB tracks ran very CLOSE to the holes. I noticed the top of my Northbridge (KT333) was slightly concave (I think this is normal) so thermal paste wouldn't have given good contact. I left the AMD heat pad on the heatsink and used that instead.

I'll save drilling holes in my mainboard for a very, very cold winter night.

Solve : Removing Hard Disk Drive cover?

Answer»

If I were to remove an older Hard Disk Drive its cover and connect it to a computer, would I be able to see the mechanics in motion or would it immediatly crash due to dust and dirt build up?

Even if it were possible, would it be safe?Yes this has been done!......by a placing a  plastic cover to see the platters working.....its safe....to do it......providing its earthed on the case! Will an improvised plastic cover do? I believe I have seen these before, but they looked Hard Disk Drive specific..I have know case modders to use a cd plastic case....

my sons pc looks like a lighthouse.......disco......Not quite interested in Hard Drive BOOGIE, I'm affraid. Just interested in seeing the mechanism work.

Use your old cover as a template & make up a PERSPEX one.
I'd be more concerned about your own SAFETY than any dust getting in.
7000 RPM + out of BALANCE could be a recipe for sliced & diced Raptor.
If you ever open it up, let us know what it all looks like in there. You have never seen an open Hard Disk Drive? I have destroyed several today. The platters are unremovable, even with the correct tools. The magnets inside are very powerful and should be salvaged if you ever discard a Hard Disk Drive.

If you wish, I can make a photo of several, now demolished, Hard Disk Drives. The platter(s) inside is extremely reflectible, much better than your standard mirror.

Use your old cover as a template & make up a perspex one.

What exactly is perspex? I have never heard of that before. Where do I obtain it and how does it work?I have a few old ones, I'll pull one apart & check it out.
Perspex? What can I say? You must know it by a different name.
Clear, tough, plastic, acrylic sort of?

Where do you live?I am too paranoid to tell you.

But I'll give you a hint; We've got Windmills, legalized prostitution and Bob Marley would feel at home.

Appearantly, it has the same name in my language. I will look for it. Can I simply do this at home and is it expensive?
That's ENOUGH hints, the CIA are on their way. LOL

I'd expect you would get a 150mm square piece for free.
You can cut it to size with a hacksaw blade, leave a 5mm overlap all round because if the holes you drill are too close to the edge it will crack.
Position your old cover as a template, mark the holes & drill them out.
Don't tighten the screws too tight as this will cause it to crack too.Can I obtain this at any D.I.Y center?

Solve : Power supply shuts down?

Answer»

I read an article on how to GET a SWITCHING power supply to turn on when it's not hooked up to a mother board. Now I just have to FIND out how to keep the power supply from shutting down when I PLUG something into it(car stereo, 12volt r/c battery charger, etc.). If I plug the stuff in, then turn on the power supply on it works fine. But if I turn off say, the car stereo then turn it on again the power supply shuts down. How can I get around this? I'm using a 400 watt Powmax ATX Switching Power Supply. Can anyone help?Fed is the resident electrician. Hopefully he will be along soon to enlighten us all on this gripping topic. This is shooting from the hip

I suspect when you start with the things plugged in the power supply stabilises & gives you an output (like normal)

When you plug in or turn on after the supply is running, it senses the power drain as unstable & shuts down.

Why are you doing this, maybe there's another way?Why not simply use an AT PSU?

Solve : Monitor Problem while scrolling?

Hi,
I have currently upgraded my Windows XP Home to Windows XP Professional.  Since doing so, my monitor has a 'wave affect' whilst scrolling up and down.  The IMAGE is displayed fine whilst it is still, but moving up or down causes it to 'jump' up and down like a wave of water coming over the image EVERY second etc.  Can anybody help with this PROBLEM? HOPE so!!
Thanks,
MikeI doubt you can upgrade from Home to Pro, you have most likely overwritten Home with Pro.

But that is your concern so I will just tell you the following:

Install videocard drivers and anything ELSE that may be missing from the device manager.

A local school got rid of some DELLS.  Pentium III and 128 megs of ram, 866 Mhz.  How do I load an operating system on this computer?  Right now it doesn't even have Dos on it.You FIRST need to 'get' an operating system, w2k springs to mind  I understand and I have one.  As a matter of fact, I have windows 2000, however, the machine only recognizes that it has the a drive.  The CD ROM works, but the system has been wiped to the point that I can't boot from the CDROM drive.  I have a generic DOS disk that has some dos files on it.  Can I use it somehow to get the system to recognize the other drives?socraturk.....If you look at the dos files on the floppy ,you will probably find several dos files as well as some generic cd rom drivers .......so load that disk and then see if the cd drive is recognised ........if it is you should then be able to boot from it .........

dl65  Grab a Win2K disk from bootdisk.com....extract it to a floppy and boot with it. Select "start with CDRom support" and it will load the drivers for your CDRom.

On the boot screen it will show you which drive is your CDRom.

If E: for EXAMPLE type E: and hit enter.
Then at the E: prompt type setup and you're good to go.

patio.  Press F2 on boot and you can get to the boot sequence option. That late of a model can boot directly from CDROM.Is the hard-drive physically present, or has the school removed them?

128 MB of RAM is low, even for Windows 2000, 512 MB would be much better.

Solve : installing two hard drives?

Answer»

help ive just bought a 126gb maxton hd i am running w98se with a 27gb hd now both have got win 98 installed the computor reconises both drive .but i CANT choice betweent the two which to boot. any one know the answer please. You need to have a boot manager. Windows 98 does not provide this. But you can get one for free at a boot manager site.  I'd suggest getting a MULTIBOOT compliant LOADER such as GRUB (google.com search-> grub) although it seems complicated after reading a little of the documentation you can setup the required partitions.thank you for your advice i will try this out and let you know if i have any success.daveIf you don't mind paying for a good boot manager which will do backups and drive images as well, I would suggest BootIT NG from TeraByte Unlimited.

Why did you PUT '98 on both drives INSTEAD of making the second drive part of the first drive's Extended DOS partition and adding Logical drives to it?

Do you need two copies of '98?

PLEASE HELP.
I never had a problem using PLUG and Play devices when I was running Win XP & Win 98SE.  Now that I am using Win 2000 I am unable to plug my mouse into another usb port, install my webcam or printer.  I am unable to locate any of my previous driver disk.  When I plug something in then my hardware wizard tries to install a driver for my "Generic USB HUB" device.  Then I GET a message stating it failed due to an installation instances or something like that.  Someone please help. You can obtain drivers from the manufacturer their website.Confused,
From which manufactuor?  I have searced Intel, Gateway and Microsoft and nothing?Of the devices that you are attempting to connect. Before connecting these, first install drivers.http://www.usbman.com/

you may need one of these>USB HUB" deviceWhen trying to update the "Generic USB Hub" I receive a message stating the driver update failed due to a device instance not specified for this driver" or something like that.Apart from finding the correct drivers, I WOULD not know what else you can try.

Solve : Programs Freezes? Hardware??

Answer»

This is making me sooo mad. Internet Explorer Keeps on Crashing. I downloaded Firefox because I thought it was I.E. that sucks. Firefox crashes too.  I just noticed that Doom 3, FarCry, AOL Instant Messenger crashes or freezes.  I built my computer and I don't know whats causing it. Is it software or hardware?  I thought maybe that my comptuer was over heating , so i added a extra fan. That didnt work. Maybe it was the Extra Stick of 512 Megs of ram i installed a while ago(I have 1 gig of ram). Maybe it the Virus SCan software I installed? Maybe its just Windows? I don't know but its very frusterating.  The only thing that doesn't freeze is my Music Production programs.  As I write this, I.E and Firefox crashed 5 times.  My friend was telling me that its a bad stick of Ram.. but I dont' believe it. I did a virus test and a Adware test. .and it was all good. help!

thanks,
JOhnMore than likely it is all the adware/sopyware/cr*pware that you have picked up on the Internet? Do you have up to date software to protect you from this? If not. google for AdAware, Spybot, AVG AntiVirus, etc.Run these 2 scans first then when you are clean download & test your RAM with the last link if you still have a problem.

http://www.memtest.org/Hey, Im confused on this memtest.com.. theres so many to choose from.. which do i choose?   I entered BIOS and both stick of ram are running at 200 MHz. so thats good.  I have to spyware, adware or virus.. my programs are up to date.

1. Farcry.. Just quits after like 2 minutes
2. Doom 3- freezes.. then gives me a "Illegal Operation"
3. Internet explorer- give me illegal operation, in pages with alot of graphics
4. Firefox- just freezes.

Just my music production software never freezes..

thanks,
johnHave a floppy ready.
Download the  Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS - Win)
Create the bootable floppy.
Set your bios to 1st boot a drive.
Boot with the floppy in a drive and let it rip for a few hours.Ahhok.

Well, I don't have a floppy,, so if i put it on a CD-ROM and make CD-rom a Bootable Item.. that will work?Use the Windows memory test, it's fully explained before you start.
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.aspIt may be from a bad driver. Check your device MANAGER for any warnings and if you see anything either not signed by microsoft or suspicious try to find the latest update.

It is possible that a running program or service can be causing the CRASH, I know in Windows98 (not sure about OTHERS) the crash report gives you what caused the exception and that should give you a good idea of what to stop.

Solve : Computer will not power up!?

Answer»

I just purchased a new mother board, power supply, processor, and ram chip to upgrade my system. I completed the install, powered the system up and everything seemed to work fine. I began to install Windows ME and after about 10 minutes of run time, the entire system shut down. I tried to restart the system and nothing would happen. I then unplugged the system and let the power on led on the mother board go completely out. I plugged everything back in and tried to power the system up again. The fan on the power supply, case and processor all twitched, but then stopped and nothing else happened.
These are all new components that I purchased online from a reputable retailer. I have built or rebuilt several systems, but this is the first time that I have ENCOUNTERED this problem.

Thanks for your help,
DarrellAre the pieces compatiblke? Is your power supply adiquate to run the motherboard? Have you try to reset your motherboard settings? Remove the battery to reset your COMOSrecheck the cpu.........repaste it.......and then replace the heatsink........This just happened to me. I was in the middle of Age of EMPIRES 3... then it just turned off. The power supply FELT pretty hot. unplugging and re-plugging the power cord caused a fan twitch but it wouldn't boot and well just nothing happens. except the green power light is on in the front. I built this PC last summer. It's been a dream. I just don't know where to start to FIGURE out this shut down. Could it be power? Processor? Motherboard? It could be anything. Heat and motherboard incorrectly installed to where it is shorting out is possible, as is bad power supply, or improperly connected items. Reseat everything.

Solve : Can't Degauss?

Several days ago, my CrystalScan 1572DG MONITOR gained a slight blue tint on-screen, which has progressed to the point where red is virtually black. I think it needs to be degaussed, but I have no idea how to do that with this machine. There should be a degauss button on the monitor or a way to select it in the OSD (On Screen Display). The only buttons on this monitor adjust screen display (HORIZONTAL, vertical, width).Leave monitor ......disconnect from the pc.....and unplug it  from the mains supply......for a couple of days......and never have the moblie phone or SPEAKERS next to it.....or any other  magnetic force....... Thanks for the tip. I unplugged the monitor, as you directed, and left it in that state for two days. I then plugged it back in and STARTED it back up.

It didn't work. I still have the annoying blue haze over everything on-screen.

Solve : Keyboard Problems????

Answer»

Hi Guys,
This one baffled me! I switch on my PC and Log-in usind the standard Ctrl+Alt+Del and enter my password, all fine. Then the minute that Windows starts after I've logged on, and am in Windows, I no longer have the USE of my Keyboard?

Any suggestions?hold down the f8 key on boot and chose last good config....or try hitting the crtl+alt+del again after log-in.you may have a damaged/corupt driver..?Tried F8, didn't work.

Tried up-dating driver, didn't work.

It doesn't respond to Crtl+Alt+Del in WindowsIs it your pc......OK, I managed to get it working when I logged on to the actual PC instead of LOGGING on to the network. The question now is why does it work when I log on to the Local machine and it doesn't when I log onto the network?

Also, when I booted in Safe mode, it worked, but the minute I booted in safe mode with networking it didn't work again?

I illiminated the chance of it been the PC, otherwise it wouldn't have worked at all, and it did work to log on.

So I found the problem, but does anyone know why it does that?Is your computer clean?

Are you able to isolate the network and go online independant of the network ?

dl65
Possible, but why would the network effect 1 PC out of 40, and why would that effect the keyboard?

Also, I can then log on to the local machine, and access the network from then onwards.NeilP....
Have you tried another keyboard ..just to rule out that POSSIBILITY?
When the keyboard is inactive .....is the mouse fully operational ?
what's the possibility of it being a prank of some kind ?

Has the previous mouse shown the same signs?yes problem existed with previous mouseIs this a laptop? Try disabeling the onboard mouse.Yes it is a laptop.
Mouse is plugged into USB .. not a wireless mouse.

ThanksHave you tried to DISABLE the onboard mouse, if there is any?No I havent. Not sure how to check for one.
I am a user not a techie..  Is there a device that allows you to use your fingers to guide the mouse or a little stick in the center of your keyboard?

Mouse acting erratically and/or is not moving properlyyes I have both.
You have both of these devices?

You can most likely disable them by doing the following:

1. Right click on My Computer
2. Properties
3. Hardware tab
4. Device Management
5. Right click on the onboard mice and select disable. Do not remove them as they will be redetected upon restart!

See if this causes the erratic mouse behaviour to cease.Found mouse options in the controll panel.
disabled pointing stick. left touch pad alone.
applied new settings. Hope this works.
I noticed when touching pointing stick it
was only moving vertical. Would this
indicate it wasnt working. Quote

It should move both horizontally and vertically, however, I have very little experience with laptops.

Do remember that if you wish to use the accupointer and touchpad, you will need to re-enable them.

If this did not resolve your problem, you may wish to scan for viruses, trojan horses and spyware.

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy

Using only one firewall is advised. Dual firewalls may cause problems.
Using a hardware firewall and a software firewall is even more adviced.

Solve : big CD Drive problems?

Answer»

I just got Warcraft 3 and I'm dying to play it, but all the sudden my CD drives aren't working.

First off, I go to device manager and CHECK the properties of my DVD drive ( HP DVD Writer 640b) and it says This device cannot start.
. I go through the troubleshooter and try uninstalling the drive and reinstalling it twice, but it can't start. I didn't try unplugging it and replugging it because that would involve a lot of unneccessary work if there's another way to fix it. Help on that would be appreciated.

Secondly, my cd drive (ARUR CD-R480.A4) doesn't seem to want to read the wc3 disc. When I go to My COMPUTER the cd drive merely tells me that there's a CD-ROM in it. The autoplay doesn't run and when I go to double-click on the drive to start the game, I get a message saying F:/ is not accessible. The disc structure is corrupted and UNREADABLE. I know the disc is fine because my other computer can read it, and I also know that the drive can't read Age of Empires 2 even THOUGH it could earlier today. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling this drive too, and still no luck.

Both of these drives came with the computer and haven't been messed with, and have worked fine until tonight. Help please? Are these copied games?Nope, both games are perfedctly legal, and sc3 was fresh out of the box.  The problem is definately with my CD drives.  I'm thinking that if I can't get them fixed today I'll just bring it in to Best Buy and get it repaired or SOMETHING.  There's bound to be a warranty on it somehow, I only got it less than a month ago.Make use of the warranty, then.

Solve : Pri Master Hard Disk: S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, Backu?

Answer»

I have been receiving this message and realize that my HD is probably going bad and need to replace. I have looked at Norton Ghost  and Powerquest Drive copy to help copy everything over to a new HD. My question is is there a special cable i need to hook current HD to new HD to allow this transfer to happen? I am trying to fix this myself and not have to TAKE it in. as I am typing this I do not know all the specs of my current HD.
and help is appreciated!
thanks Ghost and DriveCopy are used to create IMAGES on HARD drives, CD's, etc.  The "image" file is not bootable or usable in any way until it is restored BACK to the hard drive.  In addition to your bad hard drive, you will need a new hard drive AND something to back the old one on to.  OR, install new hard drive and copy entire contents of old drive to new drive.  Software with the new drive will allow you to do this.

Installing a PC IDE/EIDE hard drivethank you commando for the info you posted.
If this helps:  is there a specific interface cable i can use to easly transfer all the data from current HD to new? and will the new HD need to be powered up, etc...  and what software if any can perform this?
thanks again.
Cable and software will be included with new hard drive.  If new hard drive is not supplied power from your PC, it won't work at all.  There will be spare power connectors inside your PC.  If this is a NOTEBOOK computer, you will not be able to transfer in this manner.

Solve : Keyboard problem, First Post?

Answer»

Hi This is my FIRST time posting in this group. I hope I'm in the right forum. My keyboard will not let me use the number keys. I've tryed a new keyboard and the same thing HAPPENS. There are no Num Locks on. Sometimes I can get the number keys to work but I don't know what I've done to make them work. I could use some SUGGESTIONS as to what to do. Thank You, David
PS should I be posting in a software group?Num LOCK should be on while USING the keypad.

[glb]Flame[/glb]There should be a setting in the BIOS to automatically turn num lock on when the computer bootsIf you have windows XP, and you press num lock while on your username, and it remains on until the computer shuts off, then it saves this as a personal setting
