Solve : Experiencing Lag?

Answer»

Ok I've been haveing this problem for a while. For some weird reason when I'm playing games like warcraft III or Counter strike source sometimes the game gets super laggy it's so bad that the mouse can barely move at all. Then after like 2-5 seconds it goes back to normal. But in counter strike the same thing happens and when this happens my frames drop to like 5 or 10. I dont think it is my graphic card as when this happened on my Geforce mmx440 I bought a geforce 6800nu. I still have the problems. I emailed the tech support for EVGA and they said it sounds like a ram problem with the video card. I even installed the game to my 2nd harddrive which is brand new with barely anything on it.

2.4GHZ
756MB memory
evga6800nu
Have you tried updating the driver?

You could ALSO try setting the paging file to 2000 Min & Max.

What speed is your drive(s) and how big is the drive cache or buffer?Yup, my video drivers are up to date. The pageing file is at 2000 min and max. The drive is 7200RPM with 8mb Buffer.ctrl+alt +del......>task manager.....disable the proceeses you dont need......like error reporting/remote access/ etc.. or pay the games website a visit for a patch.....768-756=12

Where has the 12 MB of RAM GONE, or is it a typo?

Have you run a test on the RAM?You didnt say if you got more Ram if you didnt , Ram WOULD definatley help.

Make SURE the severs you connect to have low ping.

Dont install games on a second hard drive its best to install on the primary drive or so ive found. what cpu do you have?.something is dragging the system down........do you have any P2P programs....

does this happened all the time....or only when gaming....This is only happening when gaming I don't think it happens any other time. I have a pentium 4 processor. Its weird i dont know whats going on.!Heat or video card problems perhaps? Are you overclocking anything? Have you gotten a response from the game or video card manufacturer regarding this? Are there any updates/patches for the game?Hmm I emailed EVGa about the video card but It still happens on another card. I think maybe I should not overclock my system and leave it at default. All up to date on patches.I think overclocking may be a big part of the problem and something that should have come up earlier as a possible prolem source.

I would never recommend this, unless you just want to have problems or burn up components. Quote

I should not overclock my system and leave it at default.

Overclocking is - not - good engineering practice.

Processors are made to run at a higher rate than their sevice rate and so it is possible to overclock them.

However having determined the point at which they fail the processor is then rated at its correct, service, rate.

This same engineering principle is used in car engines as well. An engine which is used in a car may be 'overclocked' (tuned up) but is then over-stressed.

Whilst the engine will last out the race (not always) it won't keep going at the higher speed for 500,000 miles.

Most commercial engines are underrated on purpose to extend the service life, and this is true of processors as well.

Moral. Don't overclock unless you can afford to change the processor and not be concerned about the expense.
It seems that it wasn't overclocked..   I just don't know why I get these problems. I am stuck with 2.4 pentium 4 until I get some more money and upgrade to a better motherboard and processor possibly AMD, because I heard its faster.I don't get it. First you said it was overclocked and then you said it wasn't.

If it was don't. If not wait till you can get a faster chip. I guess you know if you get an AMD you get to buy a new motherboard, maybe some new RAM.....Are these games also running from the cd?

Solve : MSI KT6V mobo CPU and NB chipset recognition prob.?

Answer»

I have upgraded my motherboard to MSI KT6V. It has Athlon xp2600 cpu, 256mb memory (pc2700).

MSI corecell REPORTS FSB 166 and multiplier 11.5 i.e. 1.909Ghz, but when getting system report from Sisoft Sandra Lite 2005 is reports the CPU as xp2400 and also show the Northbridge chipset as Via KT400 when spec for motherboard states that it should be KT600.

One final thing that I have found is that Motherboard should support AGP x8 but in BIOS only get 3 options Auto, x2 or x4.

Other that above system opertates and usable but I would like to get at very least the MSI quoted PERFORMANCE from system. HOPE someone somewhere can help.

Thanks

Solve : Dead, Dead, Dead?

Answer»

Home made, worked fine until I decided to disable front audio and enable rear ports; opened case, changed a couple of jumpers on MB (MSI Neo 2 PFISR), vacuumed dust from processor fan/heat sink, closed case, then nothing.
Fans spin, as do FD and HD but no video, no boot, beeps or anything. Have re-seated all MB connectors, except main power, wiped CMOS; won't even boot from start-up floppy.
I'm stumped, hoping for useful suggestions. Are all cables back like they were at this point? If not, do so, and see if it works.foam4me...Hard to tell from your description ...but are you certain you didnt dislodge a card or something else when you were inside the case ? Have you reset your CMOS defaults ?  Are you certain the jumpers you changed inside are correct ?

dl65  I re-seated IDE connectors on mobo and rear of drives, video card in AGP slot; there are no other cards to move/re-seat.
No way to RENEW CMOS as no POST, video, or any other signs of life except the spinning fans on processor and Northbridge, lights on optical drives when power on, and signs of life from FDD. Again no beeps, no video.
The jumpers were done as directed from manual that came with mobo, have not re-connected original cable.
I thought to check PIN voltages on power supply but have not tried to reseat power connector.
The most frustrating thing is that the MACHINE was built in January and has worked flawlessly until this debacle.Any chance the processor got damages either by ESD, improper seating? Is the processor fan on correctly? If no post, most likely that or power supply. Can you check with a known good PSU?

Are the jumpers back like you had them (when it ran correctly) or per manual (which may have a typo)?I don't think ESD is the issue (I wore a grounding strap when working on the mobo)although I think it is hard to check. When vacuuming the dust I tried to be careful with the vacuum tool, and it was running on 110 ac, but it may be possible that something was damaged; I hope not.

I'll try refitting the original audio cable to the top panel.maybe you need to plug in the video card...... Quote

maybe you need to plug in the video card......

Is that supposed to be a joke?
I prefer serious replies.I think if you can get it back like it was originally wired and the system is running we should proceed from there.

Who understands what Merlin TYPES? I don't. I think Hopester Doofus does, but it is because he has an English/Merlin dictionary which does not require proper sentence structure or punctuation.do you hava video card........if so plug it in the motherboard......

or can you understand morse code  ... --- ...Since you are so rude: I can understand morse code but you cannot read, or at least the earlier message when I specified that the video card was re-seated.
Pay attention next time.So are you back to original configuration? What happens now?I'm not sure whether my brain has a pre-installed English-Merlin interpreter...

Try with a different video card. Or monitor. Quote

A vaccuum creates quite a bit of ESD...

Solve : Need Help w/ New Build Problem?

Answer»

I just put together my first build; ASUS A7V880 MB,MSI RX9250 128 MB DDR video CARD,AMD Athlon XP 2.17 CPU,20 GB used hard drive,16x DVD ROM,128 MB Corsair Extreme memory(1 slot).
Everything came on after;fans, cpu, lights, and I got the motherboard set up screen on my MONITOR. It said to hit delete to set up. I did that, and nothing happened.
Then I went back in the case, tried to figure out if I hooked something up wrong, rearranged the ribbons, power leads, then I got a blank screen with only a orange light lit. Now that's all I get.
I'm hoping  that I didn't short out anything, can someone who's an experienced builder,PLEASE help me. Thanks.Which operating system are you thinking of using?

When you hit delete was the keyboard powered up?

Could you toggle the NUM light on/off?Yes the keyboard was powered up.
There is already windows me(i think)installed on the hd.
I could not get the num lock to TURN off.It sounds like you were going great until you went back and rearranged the leads.
Put them back & start again.

Solve : Computer freezes during gameplay?

Answer»

Wassap, been awhile since my last posting.  Got a new problem.  Just bought a new mobo, processor, and ram.  Amd Athlon XP 2.20ghz and 1gb of ram.  Mobo brand is Gigabyte.  Anyway, everything runs perfectly, or so I thought.  During gameplay, the game starts up just fine, but after awhile of playing, the system will freeze over and make me hafta restart the entire system.  What could be causing this issue? Not enough RAM, not enough free-space for the paging file to grow?

XP can use up to 4 x 1024 MB if the mainboard is suitable. Also:

Excessive heat...

Video card troubles...

PSU problems...

patio.  If you need more than a gig of RAM you gameplay has really gotten out of hand, MacI don't have any games on my computer. Quote

I don't have any games on my computer.

Get a good FPS for therapeutic help.  Update Windows, directX, sound & video drivers.
Check the game websites for fixes & patches.
Test your ram.Okay, heres my specs:

2.20 Amd Athlon XP (Socket A)
1gb of Ram (2x 512mb Geil sticks, cas lat 2.5)
Gigabyte Mobo (supports 3gb of ram, socket A)00
256mb ATI Radeon 9550 AGP
500 watt Ultra X-Connect
80gb Seagate Hdd
Dvd-rom 16x read dvd/ 48x read cd
Cd-burner 52x read/ 52x burn/32x re-write

And temps really arent the issue.  Ive got 3 exhaust fans( 2x 80mm, 1x 120mm), 1 INTAKE (80mm), a cpu fan (5600 rpms), a video card fan(6000 rpms), dual hard drive fans, and my POWER SUPPLY has 2 built in.

I just moved everything off the drive I had my games on, reformatted and repartitioned the drive, and I still get the same problem.   I tested the ram but it showed no errors what so ever.  Im seriously stumped on this freakin problemAre you overclocking that system by any chance ? ?

Those specs should be more than enough for gaming.

P.S. What game does this occur in or is it all games...

patio.
Its in every single freakin game I play!  Currently, heres where I stand.  I just reformatted the entire partition, and reinstalled XP.  i am still getting this issue...so what now?OH......and im not overclocked at all. Uninstall and reinstall all drivers of significance.

Clean Windows installation using a registry, virus and spyware scanner, etc. That narrows it down...

Heat
Vid card problems
PSU.

patio.  I just bought the power supply...500 watt Ultra X-connect psu.

Other than taking two giant household fans and stickin em on either side of the computer...i think the heat is well taken care of.

The video card is pretty new.  Didnt have problems with it on my old mobo.  Abit mobo with celeron clocked at 2.87ghz......so..i really dont know what to say. this is a Gigabyte mobo with an amd athlon xp clocked at 2.20ghz...so.....dunno.Programs running in the background........you need to keep systray/explorer.......dump the rest.......unless you are using this game via the net.....

Solve : Anyone heard of Kahlon Memory??

Answer»

I was using a search engine looking for PC100 memory for a COMPAQ Presario 5000 and came across a place called Kahlon.com .

I used its "memory configurator" and it came up with matches for 128MB and 256MB. They have a life time warranty on their    memory and GUARANTEE their memory is compatible and will work. They had the best price of anyone else.

I just wondered if anyone had heard of them?Kahlon makes a lot stuff. I've never used their memory but did buy a laptop battery from them. It is ACTUALLY better than the original and gives about an hour more run time. Use your own judgement.I think they used to make hard drives as well. How much cheaper than name brand memory or crucial are we talking? If only a few bucks, I would stay MAINSTREAM. Quote

It would be $25.00 - $30.00 cheaper than Crucial, Kingston, or Corsair, depending on which one!!!!Cheaper than newegg? Lifetime guarantee? GUARANTEED to work? Guaranteed compatibility?

If so, and you want to save some dinero, go ahead. You have our blessing.

Solve : Did my hard drive die :(?

Answer»

Hey guys, yesterday I plugged in my ipod and it awas syncing like usual and all of a sudden my computer restarted. Once it restarted, and I logged into windows nothign happened except the start menu showed but none of my icons on my desktop or anything loaded. So then I restarted my computer again and since then I can't GET past the Windows load screen (where the bar moves across the screen). WHENEVER it gets to that part and it looks like windows is going to load my computer just restarts. Is there ANY possible way of saving anything? I'm so dumb and I didn't back up my beloved photos of when I went to spain and if I lose those I will literally freak out. Also all my college papers were also not backed up, i'm soooo dumb. Anyway.. .. any help would be appreciated, thanks! The hard drive may well still be intact. Before you do ANYTHING to try to fix it, can you backup the data you need? Either have a friend put it in their computer as a slave drive & save the data to a CDR, or boot into safe mode and copy files to a pen drive, or boot with a Live  Linux CD and copy the files to a networked computer that could similarly store them? Several options to consider.

It is more likely that you have a spyyware/adware/virus problem or something OTHER than a hard drive failing, if it boots at all. Trying to fix it before you save your data could result in data loss. Just to be sure.....I don't know much about computers but if I disconnect my hard drive and make it slave on my friends computer, it could potentially save the files? All I care about are the files thats all, its a crappy old computer and I need a new one anyway, but I just want my files. Is it really just that simple? Just unplug and plug? thanks so much for our help! The thing is I can't even get into safemode on my computer  to do anything, it just keeps restarting. when I try safe mode it loads intil "Mup.sys" and restarts. thanks for your help! That's about it, but your hard drive must be jumpered as slave, and the other computer's hard drive must be jumpered as master. He should then check in his (or hers) machine to make sure both drives are showing.

No doubt your operating system may be shot, but the data files (what you are trying to save) should still be intact. Once you get it running in the other machine, just burn them off to a CDR. Your stuff will probably be on the D Drive in My Computer, but it may be assigned a different drive letter. You'll be able to see it because the icon will look exactly like the C Drive.

Feel free to post back if other questions.

Thanks so much for your help! If my windows account is password protected, and also privacy protected from other accounts (aka if you try to view my documents and stuff from another user account then it won't let you ) will that give problems? or should it just show up as a drive that has ALL my files. thanks so much again! It should be a drive that has all the files, though you may have to navigate around to find them, but you will never know until you hook it up. Was this drive formatted as FAT32 or NTFS, if you know?

Do you have the password(s) necessary to retrieve the documents? (I am assuming they are Word files that were encrypted.)i really don't know how they were formatted (fat32 or whatever)0 does that make a difference? the only password protected thing was my user account on the windows startup screen, however I made it so only that user could access those files, i forgot how but i clicked on the folder then folder options, then somehow protected them, would that  make a difference? if possible could you possible walk my friend and I through the master slave thing (with dumby talk) we dont' really know how to do it and there's not one else that can really help. thanks again for all your time. There are three sets of two pins on the END of the drives where the cables plug in. If you are lucky, they will be MARKED MA (master),SL (slave) or CD (cable select).

The drive from your machine should have the jumpers on the 2 pins for SL, your friend's machine must have the 2 pins jumpered on MA.

DO ALL OF THIS WITH THE MACHINE UNPLUGGED!

Turn on your friends computer after connecting the data cable (the flat grey one) to both drives. The red strip along one side goes nearest the 3 prong power plug. It does not matter which of the plugs you use for which drive. You do not need to mount the drive in the case for this procesure, just make sure it is in a  secure spot.
Make sure each drive has a data cable and a power plug in it.

Boot the machine, and go into the BIOS/setup (It should tell you what key to press to get there.) Make sure both drives are recognized, then exit/save from that and restart the machine.

If you wire it wrong it won't hurt anything. It just won't work. Go to My Computer and navigate to your old drive and see what you can access.Hey GX1 Thanks so much for your hlep, I have good news and bad news. the good news is I followed your instructions and got into my hardrive and I can see all my accounts and everything. However, like I said before, I denied access to anyone but the user that's loggged in, for the files I REALLY need. is there anyway I can hack this, or do ANYTHING to retrieve these access denied files, I wish windows would just let me enter a password or something because I'm so close to getting them back! Thanks!I DUNNO, unless you create a user that is exactly like your previous user name and get in that way. If not, and no one has any ideas, you can call a professional service. Expensive, but they could do it. Good luck!

Solve : Computer freezes during RAM check?

Answer»

My computer started freezing up occasionally after start up and it had been sitting awhile. My power management should not have changed, and it only froze 1 out of 10 times. Over a period of three days it got progressively worse. I noticed that I had to push the On button several times before it would power up. Then it would suddenly power up a MINUTE or two after I had given up on pushing the power on button.
Needless to say it was running scan disk every time because of having to turn the power off due to the freezing. Then it begn freezing during scan disk. Now it freezes during the RAM memory test. I traded RAM from another computer (same type) and it froze up again on the memory check. So what's fried? The M /B, the CPU, or the power supply? Whats the specs of the computer and OS. Can you boot up in safe mode. if you can check for virus and spyware. make sure there is no dust build up in your system and check to see if its over heating. reseat your ram in a diffrent slot if you have one. Scan disc hard drive for any bad sectors try a system restore set your bios to default settings remove the cmos battery and if this still dont work Reinstall your windows.I took out the cmos battery and put it back in, but it still took a while for the power to come on. When it did, the black screen said check sum error - defaults loaded. So I held the F8 key down to watch every step. The screen went black and nothing happened for ten minutes. I hit the reset button, but nothing happened.  I did that 2-3 more times, finallyturning off the power strip. I removed the case, disconnected all the cords and cables, blew out the whole case (with my gas blower - I don't have any canned air), reconnected everything, turned on the power, it came on right away, went into scan disk, and lo, and behold it completed the scan. I knew that was a good sign. When windows loaded normally, I was pleasantly surprised and relieved.
So now I don't know if it was the dust or taking out the cmos battery or taking the case off.
If it acts up again , I'll let you know. In the meantime I'll leave the case off and see if it acts up again. Thanks a MILLION!Well, it froze up again. Fortunately, I was able to use it long enough to back up all my recent work files.
Here are some specs: Pentium II, 350mhz, win98se, not sure what else you need. I did notice the memory check did not total up to what I put in the slots, so I will experiment with that first. The memory sticks I know are good because I took them out of this computer (swapped). I don't want to have to rewrite this so I'll post this, but no need to respond until I finish testing all the memory. I do have two speeds of memory a store salesman sold me stating that the memory would work at the slower of the two speeds, but that there should be no conflict - and there hasn't been. Now I need to find out if that has changed.I tested every stick of memory I had. The pc133 256mb sticks checked out as 128mb (half what the label indicated), PLUS the computer froze. The pc133 128mb stick checked out as 128mb, but the computer still froze.
I now have only pc100 sticks in it and it seems to be working fine - so far. I now have the two pc133 256mb sticks in this computer. Hopefully they will not mess up this computer. I've had them in here for over a year.
Incidently both m/b's have top bus speeds of 100mhz.
Does this make any sense to you?Stick with the pc 100 as the FSB is 100mhz. pc 133 is to much thats why it freezes, because its more then it can take. Pc 100 is what your computer can take.Got to use what the motherboard was designed for. In you case that's PC100With only pc100 memory, it still freezes, sometimes wafter 2 hours of working, sometimes during scandisk, sometimes during RAM check. My Bios usually reads "check sum error" and gives me the opportunity to go into setup. I usually don't because when I have I haven't found anything wrong. This is really getting annoying! I even traded the cmos battery with an equivalent battery from another computer. What part COULD be wrong or so worn out that it works for a while and then quits? Doesn't that rule out the power supply? Doesn't that rule out the memory? Memory is either good or bad, right? I'm leaning toward m/b, cpu or Windows as being the culprit. What do you think? The problem with Freezing is it can be alot of things i have covered the obvious ones but there are also other possibilities hard drive could be on its way out windows could be corrupt. Did you check for virus and adaware. It also depends what your using the computer for as its not a high spec machine. Have you tried running in safe mode for a few hours and see if it still freezes if it doesnt this will tell you its a software problem. Try some more compound between the cpu and heatsink. Let us know how you go on.I bought a new power supply, but when I tried to install it. it had more pins than my motherboard would accept. I was so FRUSTRATED, I gave in and did a long-overdue upgrade. I bought a new motherboard, CPU, case w/power supply and a new hard drive. My old hard drive works fine in it. Problem avoided, but not solved.

I have since tried to return the power supply, only to be told that the four extra pins were detachable - now they tell me! I'm going to reconnect it even though I have a NICE new computer with all my old stuff intact.  I hate to not solve the problem. I like learning. I'm guess I'm half-geek!Yep, we will never know what it truly was but congrats on the new setup!   Now that it's all new & shiny how about a fresh install of w2k with partion for linux too.  You're preachin' to the choir!

(That doesn't sound like Mac too much, does it?)   I had several Dells do the same thing, they were surplus business machines.  Sounds like dust in the memory slots.  Remove all plug-in cards, cpu and memory and clean all the slots with contact cleaner or circuit board cleaner.  If the mobo is removed, do it upside down over a towel or outside.

Any idea? What if you uninstall and then reboot and reinstall the software? Can you test the drive out in another computer?vist the hcl.......winxp.......site......you drive may need firmware for it to run......check it out......

more info>>http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htmI've tried to reset the drive, reinstall both software and hardware. And the result is same.
I'll get another computer to test the drive.
Thanks.Well, I've updated the firmware for the CD Writer and also the Nero software. I also have tested the CD Writer on another computer. All ENDED the same. I guess this is a hardware failure?
Sounds like.   Sigh...guess so...since I'm always have bad luck with this kind of thing e.g. hard disk retired one MONTH after the warranty expired...game pad retired 3 months after warranty expired...just to name a few...

Btw, I think devices like harddisks or CD-ROM drives etc are not repairable?Well, your trend continues....Btw, just another minor question:

What are the recommended burning speeds for different file types? Any reason behind? If I'm burning a O/S (some Linux Download, etc.) I use 4X, for general use 24x. I'm sure you can burn faster, but I've never had any coasters this way. I have a 52x burner, so that's not the issue.

Solve : Hard Drive Shredder?

Based on the results GOOGLE returned, this may be a long shot. Does anyone know of a commercially available hard drive shredder/grinder? I NEED a device that will physically destroy hard drives by the DOZENS, and I've heard that these machines exist.Heck, send them to me. I am always needing hard drives!Wish it were that easy, GX.

We're required by law to physically destroy them...Control-Alt-Hammer ? I prefer well placed explosives...

Solve : Suggestion on RAMS?

Answer»

Hi,

Recently, i have decided to buy another desktop. But i need some advice. Because i need a very high memory capacity for one of my application to run quicker, i don't know whether i should go for 2x512 M RAMs or just a single 1G RAM. What's the implication of having a single RAM only?

Is there any suggestion?

Thank you and look forward to hearing from youA single stick. It's cheaper, and if you want to upgrade later you can just add another bank instead of having to replace both (assuming you have only two slots). Performace wise, there's no real difference.Thank you, Hopester Doofus for your reply.

That's very helpful advice. But i'm not quite sure about the disadvantage of having a single stick. I heard that in the worst case scenario, having a single stick can be disastrous especially if it's broken or stuffed for some reason which means there is no other spare stick.

So there is no real difference between having a single stick(1G) and two sticks(2x512) as far as the performance is concerned, is there?

Thank you in advance Quote

Are you talking about Dual Channel memory?

I pasted this from a memory site.

What is Dual Channel mode?

The dual channel mode was introduced when the DDR memory came about.  This technology requires two matching pairs of memory modules to be installed so that that the system runs at optimal performance.  In dual channel mode, the effective bandwidth becomes twice the standard size, that is, if you have a Dual Channel PC3200, the peak bandwidth becomes 6.4GB/sec instead of 3.2GB/sec.  This is because the two sets of identical memory DOUBLES the data paths that can be used simultaneously allowing data to move faster, minimizing time delays between read/write processes.  Before you upgrade, consult your system's specifications to verify if your motherboard supports the dual channel function.Disastrous is a strong word. Defective or failed RAM will have no effect on your data, and RAM failure rates are low, especially from a reputable manufacturer which includes a warranty.

It's a TRADEOFF. Performance is slightly better with two sticks, but what if you want to add more RAM later? If money's no object and you want to maximize performance, go with two sticks. If you want to save a couple of bucks and keep your options open down the road, go with one.

Keep this thread open and see what the rest of the gang here has to say.

I just learned of this "dual channel mode" myself.

I have a built computer that has a motherboard that supports this setup. I was looking into updgrading the memory and found it will take up to 3GB of RAM. It only has a single stick now with 256MB.

On mine it says you can use the dual channel by LOADING the sticks into two certain slots ( Mine has 3 slots) or use one certain slot or all three stick slots and then its not dual channel.

www.newegg.com has good prices on twin stick setups.
I don't run dual channel, but RAM is fairly inexpensive today. (I remember when a 4 meg stick for my 386 was $164 though!) I would go with two if I had the capacity and further expansion seemed unnecessary (like not using Vista!)Go for dual channel mode and put 2 x 1024 MB modules in.Hi, Thanks a lot guys for your feedback.

However, just like to check with you people. Is it true that having a single stick of 1024 M RAM performs a lot faster in comparison with two sticks of 526 M RAMs theoretically. BTW, the motherboard i'm going to buy has 4 slots available for use. The price that i quotes so far is for a single 1M RAM $165 whereas 2x512 M are $130 in total. It's tempting to go for 2 of 512M.

Thank you all in advance Quote

Wasn't this the original question several posts ago?
The application you're wanting to run should have the minimum and optimal hardware requirements listed in its specs. If you don't have the box it came in, you can find it on their website.

Buy two sticks and stop torturing yourself. Quote

Go to www.newegg.com like I mentioned. They have brand name memory of many variations.

Go to the memory manufacturers web-site you are interested in using and get the specs on the memory and put these specs in NewEgg's memory system search.

Leave the manufacturer line set at "Any" and it will give you the info on all the brands they have with the specs your looking for.

Just for INSTANCE. 512MB of Crucial DDR PC3200 that will fit   the motherboard in my home built unit, is $63.99, on sale for $57.59 on their site and the same Crucial part # at newegg is $44.80.

I can double stick mine with 1GB DDR PC3200 (two 512's) of Kingston ValueRam for $79.91 newegg.

Solve : Diamond Stealth s60 problem?

Answer»

I'm working on a Win2k computer with onboard video. We need to connect to a TV, so I've installed a Diamond Stealth s60 PCI CARD. I've installed 2 of these successfully (after calling Diamond and downloading new drivers because the CD that comes in the box with them doesn't work). I've been in Windows to uninstall/disable the onboard video, and went into the BIOS to set the primary display to PCI. When the computer boots, it freezes at the b/w Win2k startup screen. I can reboot and change the BIOS back to onboard video primary and it boots fine, but we need to use the new video card. Diamond Multimedia is impossible to contact (been on hold for 30 minutes long distance, and they won't reply to their web form I've completed twice). Any ideas I can try? I'm thinking of just taking it out and buying an AGP card if we have to.I FINALLY got in touch with Diamond Multimedia, who says they're moving, which is why they're not getting to the tech help. They said to boot Win2k to Safe Mode and remove the onboard video drivers from Device Manager. Then reboot the computer to the BIOS and change the primary display to PCI. This worked, and the drivers that came with the card on the CD actually worked this time too. Problem solved. So the only difference was safe mode?Yep, that's the only thing I did differently. It started right up into Windows ready for drivers. Now the teacher I did this for called and said that starting yesterday the computer boots to a blue screen and stays there. I'm going to go check it out with new drivers from Diamond's web site in hand, just in case. When I got there, they had it running in safe mode. I removed the standard Intel adapter from Device Manager again. Then every time a user LOGGED in normal mode it wanted to install the standard VGA graphics adapter. This time I let it then disabled it in Device Manager. Now no MATTER what user logs in, it no longer tries to install a standard VGA adapter and uses the PCI adapter. For now, everything is working again.admin.....Yes, I was logged in as admin while removing/installing anything. But even if I removed the onboard vid, then logged in as a user, it would try to install it again and the user can't do anything with that. So I disabled it as the admin so it remained disabled for everyone.

Solve : Help With Fatel Errors?

Answer»

I've started experiencing a problem which is VERY annoying. Its a mixture of fatal errors and "error caused by device driver". Sometimes it causes the compter to restart and other times it just causes the program to close. The problem seems to occur the most when I use demanding software/applications/games or a mixture. This lead me to believe it was either my ram or graphics card which i've discovered are fine through trying diffrent components and reseating etc. Also its neither an over-heating problem or PSU problem!!

WELL any way i need help! so heres my computer specification
CPU: 2700+ Anthlon
Ram: 1 Gb (crucial)
Motherboard: KT7AV-L
Gfx: Saphire Radeon 9800 PRO128mb
HD: Exector[?] (sure you know what i mean)
PSU: Tagan TG-330

I've probably missing loads, but there ya go. Thanks for your attention!

Edit: I also have a black mouse Quote

Edit: I also have a black mouse

You get 10 bonus points for a sense of humor!

You might try in this order:

Reseating RAM chips
While in there reseat all other cards and make sure connections are snug with cables, etc., all fans are turning, etc.
Run memtest 86 (FREE, www.memtest86.com) for several hours
Check for conflicts in device manager (yellow exclamation point)
Make sure your adware/spyware/virus scanners are up to date and  used
Check system temp, if available in BIOS
Let us know what video card is in there.
Is this a new problem, or has it always done this?

Let us know what you find.
Right, So i've done most of the things you've suggested apart from the memtest (which i'll do a bit later) I reseated everything, and i thought for a second that maybe something (sound card which i've never reseated it) had sorted the problem as I managed to get through the entire opening cut scene of F.E.A.R. But then a short way into the game i discovered how to slide tackle and went a bit crazy tackle bad guys and the computer restarted it self

Is there any chance that it could be the motherboard that is causing this? When I first received the board it was faulty and had to get it replaced.

I'm not really 100% sure whether the problem has always been there, this is because its only recently games have become more demanding (slide tackling) and its only really started to show through this. I never experience this problem in games like HL(1), wc3, FM2006 and other various old school games.

Im gonna try the memtest later though to see if that can give any evidence to the problem. I've done it a few times before but no longer that 3-4 hours at a time. What about the system fans and the heat question? If it only does it when CPU intensive things are goin.....58 is the highest it goes. HMM, I'll try running it with the sides of the case of. But surely that would only solve the computer restarting it self if it was the problem and not the application errors ? Quote
Its a mixture of fatal errors and "error caused by device driver"

UPDATE your sound & video drivers from the manufacturer's websites.Ok, I've checked and there now updated.

Whats the problem likely to be?Disable your sound to see if that is the problem. I used to play a game that crashed on me like this. I found out that although the sound card was WORKING playing music Cds ECT...  it still caused my game to crash. I bought a diffrent Soundcard diffrent make and all was sorted. For what ever reason the soundcard i had didnt like me playing night maps.various old school games.

Its a mixture of fatal errors and "error caused by device driver". Sometimes it causes the compter to restart and other times it just causes the program to close

visit the events log......c/panel >click admin tools. icon......Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and check all your devices...if you spot any yellow ? marks then that is your wonked driver.
Replace accordingly.

Solve : Hard Drive Install?

Answer»

Hello everyone hoping you can help me again i installed a second hard drive in my computer and made it the slave. Windows recognizes the drive and says it is working PROPERLY but my total space as not CHANGED at all. I went through add hardware and that still doesn't help me hoping one of you guys can.reboot pc......now see.....rebotted and still nothing. When i bought it the guy at the store was saying something about going into the C drive propertires and switching something so the computer will use both at the same time. You can only get a total for each drive independently. I have NEVER seen them added.

Download Belarc Advisor for free at www.belarc.com and see about the various sizes of your drives, USED and unused portions, etc.i dont even have a seperate drive in the My Computer folderWhat kind of computer? What kind of hard drive? You see both drives in the BIOS/setup screen? You are sure that both drives are jumpered correctly and connections snug? That HDD needs to be properly partitioned and formatted before Windows will recognise it ...
Use the utility that shipped with the HDD.

patio.  Did you change the first drive's jumper to Master?

Can you see the drive and unallocated space in Disk Management?

If yes, Can you assign the drive a letter and then make a partition(s) and format them?

Is the slave drive connected to the intermediate grey colored connector on the IDE cable? And if you want the 2 drives to "appear" as joined, you will have to have a RAID controller, either onboard or an add in card. Then you will need to set it up as RAID 0.Is this for XP Professsional?

Remove the hold down screw on the top of the card tab.
Carefully pull the card STRAIGHT up towards you, it shouldn't take too much pressure..

Check the contacts on the sound card you can clean them gently with a pencil eraser.
Choose another slot to install it into...this could be part of the problem.
Insert it firmly making sure it is lined up properly it will only go in one way.
Remember to use the small screw that holds the sound card in place as this also serves as a ground.
Hook up your connections, plug in the power and boot up...
Hopefully you should be good to go.

Solve : keyboard and mouse not detected?

Answer»

hi!
i have p4 pc 400
windows 98
my problem is that i cannot press any key while the computer is bootig up! supposed to be that i can press del key to go to cmos set up! or F1.but nothings happen!
when the computer FINISH the boot up and it shows the winows 98! when i open the word application i can normally type!

but one time i decided to reset my bios by taking off the back up battery!and the bios DEFINITELY rset!but i have to configure it.but i cannot press any key!
now i cannot go any more to the windows!
please help!
sorry for my grammar
thanx again
Is this a PS/2 mouse/keyboard, or a USB or wireless?

Can you get to the BIOS and turn USB emulation off, if that is an option and you have a standard PS/2 mouse and keyboard?my keyboard is an usb PORT! and my mouse i connect to the com 1 of the pc!last few weeks i can acces to the cmos set up and i can press del key!I think if you had a normal PS/2 setup all would be well. At least that may be required to get into the BIOS.

Have you tried with a normal set? Does that fix all problems?for now i do not have a ps/2 keyboard! maybe 2morrow i will buy! i hope i will work! but actually this is my first time it happens to me! i always use that keyboard to acces the cmos set up!i do not have an updated WIN 98 and i dont have a virus and spyware protection! dont you think it might be cause of an spyware?
thanx man!for ur time and effort!i REALLY appreciate it!okay have to buy a new one!Virus and spyware protection is critical for any Windows based computer on the internet. Once you get your inpute devices working you might want to download and use Ad Aware, Spybot and AVG Free edition. All of these are free and you can do a google search to get them?

Where are you located?

well im trying to boot from my cd drive first....so i can re-install windows.  i set it as the first thing to boot.  then i restart my computer.  then it takes me to (i think) DOS and i have a blinking horizontal line on the top left, kind of like a text cursor instead of it telling me to press any key to boot from my cd.  my keyboard stops responding at this point (im able to turn num / caps lock off and on until i get to this screen)  i unplugged and replugged all the things connecting to it, and even tried using the ports and CORDS i did for my hard drive.  i also tried two different cd drives, both of which have worked in the past. so, may i ask, *censored*?!?!?!?! What is the computer make/model? Are you using standard PS/2 and mouse? Are they PLUGGED into the right ports? What happened prior to this difficulty? Why a Windows reinstall? Any previous hardware problems? Have you added a second drive or anything unusual? Are you the only person with ACCESS to this machine?i built the computer myself...i installed windows and everything fine before but i accidently clicked automatic updates and had to activate it.  the mouse is usn but the keybaord is ps2, and it works in seyup and whatnot.  its the driver other than my hard drive.  ive tried everything on several websites, but nothing works.  would deleting windows help? it worked when windows wasnt there in the first place...i even tried setting it as primary and secondary master and slaves, nothing SEEMS to work. so once again...*censored*?!?!?!! I would try a PS/2 mouse, and make SURE those drives are jumpered correctly. So this is a problem with activating Windows? Was this CD already used on another machine?well i tried the ps2 mouse, and ive disconnected and RECONNECTED the drivers multiple times, switching from primary and secondary master and slaves.  ive tried a bunch of different settings in setup.  nothing works.  it seems like its trying to read the cd, but cant.  its brand new though, and i used the same one to install windows the first time.  since ive already used the same cd key, will it not work if i try activating it over the internet? (i havent been able to try that yet cuz i cant access it from my dorm room without signing in through windows.) shane sprenger.......

Why would you not have activated windows ..........or are you using a not so legal copy ?

dl65  If it has never been activated orf even if it has go ahead and do so now. The activation is keyed to the machine it was first installed and activated on, so if this is just a reinstall, no problem. If not, then you will have to call Microsoft and explain how this happened.

We are assumoing you are all legal here.

Solve : Complete Computer Failure?

Answer»

recently on friday i was adding a pci card and turned my computer back on to find i had no picture. tried another computer and monitor was fine. power was getting to gpu card. bought a new one today and still no picture. it does a monitor test as if its just plugged in with power.

Comp Specs:
KT600 Dragon Plus v2.0 MB AGP 4/8x
AMD Athlon 1700+
512 MB Ram
*New Gigabyte FX5200 Video Card W/ 128mb gddr

Took everything apart and cleaned including cpu. put in bigger PSU and added fan. Everything powers up fine and runs but no picture.  Any ideas. Im good with computers but im just frustrated with this.Do you have an onboard videocard? No onboard video  Are all cables and hardware firmly and properly inserted?

Have you taken precautions against ESD?

Have you tried a different videocard?all cables are secured and I have esp grounding strip from my parents work. they do chip work and have to wear them. everything powers up right and fans and all run. all wires are put in place, ram is in tight, cleaned heatsink, fan, tried DIFF hard drive. it turns on but just does not boot.Do you hear any beeps?

Have you tried a different videocard?

What does work?

Have you tried to reset the BIOS?had another card in there a MX440 put new FX5200 in todayReset bios. how do i do that?
Quote
Reset bios. how do i do that?

To reset the BIOS, take the following steps:

1. Power down computer
2. Take measures against electro-static discharge
3. Remove computer casing
4. Inspect mainboard for a CMOS jump switch or CMOS battery (Most systems have either)

In case of CMOS jump switch being present :

FOLLOW instructions provided with the mainboard manual.

In case of CMOS battery present :

I. Remove CMOS battery for approximately 10-15 seconds.
II. After 10-15 seconds, place the CMOS battery back.

5. Power on system.

Do not power on the system when the CMOS jumper is set to clear_cmos or when  the CMOS battery is not present.

Quote
had another card in there a MX440 put new FX5200 in today

What were the results?reset bios but still nothing. No onboard videocard is present? (Present as in; enabled or disabled)

If there is, use that to get into the BIOS and disable it from there.

If there is non present, try using a PCI videocard.

Also test the computer using another monitor.

On another side note;

You are absolutely certain the computer operates normally? Do you hear the Windows jingle sound as it loads? Do all the fans work and do you hear the Hard Disk Drive spinning?I DONT have PCI Videocards and My windows is password PROTECTED so there is no jingle sound. Hard drive spins and tested them both in another comp. HD with windows is master other is set to slave.Onboard video does not exist. its micro atx.

Solve : Gateway Won't Start?

Answer»

My two year old computer is having startup problems.  Attempting to start up by moving the mouse or touching a key is met with a blank screen.  The green light indicates that the CPU is getting ELECTRICITY.  For several days, the computer did not initially respond, then would open the "Owner" screen either minutes or hours later.  Now, I cannot get any response.  I am not aware of any downloads in the last few weeks (although AOL may have provided an updated version.  My daughter may have also downloaded a screensaver.)  I do not have a startup diskette.  The CD-Rom drive will not open when the button is pushed.  I have checked the cables, and they remain properly attached.  Please speak loud and slow if you respond, because I am not very computer-savvy.  Thanks.  First off, do you use any spyware/adware/virus PROTECTION? If so was it current and being used?

Can you shut the machine down by holding the power button in for 4-5 seconds? If so, when it restarts, go to the desktop, right click and choose Properties, then screen saver. If anything is listed, make note of what it is, and chen select NONE.

Let US know about these issues first.I have Norton Anti-virus.  It is current and being used.

If I hold in the on/off button, the computer does go off, but when I restart, I still have a black screen - the desktop does not come up.Can you get to the BIOS/Setup screen at all? The key combination may show up briefly before Windows starts to load.

Has this computer been moved/abused/played with inside, etc. lately? Have you checked with Gateway to see if this is a KNOWN issue for that model? By the way, what model is it? Is your warranty still in effect? And to sum up it worked totally fine until now? And the only thing that might have affected it on your end is AOL (uggh!) or somebody downloading something (scary).

Well, let us know about these issues.Laptop/desktop.......did you hibinate/standby feature on  this PC.......list the pc hardware specs if know.....hard drive is...../ etc....

Solve : Mysterious 56k Modem?

Answer»

Hye Guys
I've got a funny 56k Modem, when I start it and start downloading something it starts of with a speed of 56 - 100 KByte per minute   and then it SINKS to 4-1.
Does anyone know how keep the top speed constant or around that high level of DSL ?Well if you have a 56kbps modem that's Dial up.

You average speed for that is about 4kbps MAX.

For DSL it can vary from 150kps up too a Meg depending on connection speed.Yeah well my Modem is mysterious as said in the topic-header.And as already said the DOWNLOADS start of with a speed of 64kBytes/min and then sink to 4 or less.
I'm sure other people have already expierenced this to. :-/An initial modem connection will show as the high END until the modem has enough time to read packets and report a true connection speed.
This is completely normal.

patio.  An initial modem connection will show as the high end until the modem has enough time to read packets and report a true connection speed.
This is completely normal.

patio.  Is this download or upload speed......and how many pcs are connected to it via a hub? This is a download speed and I don't work in a network. patio
Well if it shows the speed of the conneting computer then the connecting computer must have that speed with the user (me), but somehow it turns down the speed. Smehow you should be able to stop that!Is this some kind of WinModem or a real hardware controlled modem? When was the last time you had your phone line checked? I believe Patio is right, that it is normal.
I use a v.92 that runs at 56k. On downloads it MIGHT start as high as 9.5, but WITHIN a few seconds usually it's leveled out to around 5.5 or so. Has a lot to do with your actual connection speed too.We need to know more.........what make it the 56k , internal/external what pc is it connected to.....and isp and is it connected to an extension lan cable......

Solve : Questions on notebook system temperature?

Answer»

Hi, I've got a few doubts regarding notebook system temperature, heat production and dissipation

-What's the upper limit of a notebook harddisk temperature?

-Which part of a notebook that produce heat the most? Is it the harddisk, RAM, CPU or the graphics card?

-How effective is a notebook cooler pad in heat dissipation?
-Is there any alternative that I can use?

--My laptop harddisk is constantly above 40 degree centigrades, only falls less than that when no application is running, not even screen saver or when the system is just started. This HAPPEN in any room temperature, with my cooler pad operating at USB POWER plus an external computer fan near the "vent". It even goes up to 55 - 60 degrees during defragmentation.
What computer make/model, what CPU, do you have Speedstep technology active (if Intel) and are you sure it is free of dust and all fans operating correctly? What does the manufacturer say the temp should be?does it SHUTDOWN? do to this heat problem.....all electrical products generate heat........one cure is have more air-flow......place the laptop on solid surface with WOODEN blocks under it..........a laptop/notebook should not be on your laptop........it will have more problems from body heat.......and do even more....to your body?not scaremongering a proven FACT.....

Solve : psu q's?

Answer»

my WINDOWS 98 SE is having psu problems, the fan inside the psu no longer works, and now i have to replace the psu..... i have another computer that i no longer use, and i was wondering what do i have to look for on the psu to ensure that i don't ruin my windows 98 SE compThere is no such thing as a 'Windows 98SE' computer. It is a PC and the OS happens to be Windows 98SE.

First of all: Make certain that the form factor of the PSU complies with that of the case you intend to put it in. It is either AT or ATX unless it is made by a company such as Compaq whom may use different form factors.

Second of all: make certain the amount of Wattage the PSU is capable of providing is the same or more than the one currently installed.

And last but not least: make certain the PSU is undamaged and TRUSTWORTHY. Do not install a PSU that is dodgy or was found lying around a dumpster. If the PSU seems damaged in anyway, discard it. Stick to the above three pointers, take notice of ESD PRECAUTIONS and all should be well. Second of all: make certain the amount of Wattage the PSU is capable of providing is the same or more than the one currently installed.

how would i go about finding that information.... is it on that nice little sticker that is on the psu?
PS i know that windows 98 SE is an OS, but its a lot faster to just type windows 98 SE comp than my computer that is running the OS windows 98 SEThe OS has no influence over the PSU installed.

Also, since this is a forum and not a chatbox, you can take all the time you need to write your message. Include as much information as you can, but do not mix jargon for your inconvenience.

you TELL me not to mix jargon but what is all of this that u have typed? If it is a standard ATX power SUPPLY that you plan on using, and that is what the original had, and the wattage is the same or higher you should be fine.

Is this some proprioetary computer? (HP, Dell, etc.) Quote

Don't say 'Windows 98SE' when you actually mean a Personal Computer.

Get it?not a proprietory comp, ATX power supply = huh? Some manufacturers (HP, Compaq, etc.) have ATX power supplies, but they are proprietary in terms of physical size, capability, etc.

Solve : hp3650 printer, color cartridge problem?

Answer»

I have had no problems re-inking the black cartridge on this printer so I thought I would try to re-ink the tri color cartridge - now it only prints in black and light blue, and infrequently in yellow and light green.  I have tried to clean, recalibrate, test print, all that stuff, but still comes out the same. One of the suggestions in the booklet that came with the kit was to set it with the nozzle on a wet papertowel for 5 minutes. When I did that, I did see all 3 colors on the towel.... put the cartridge BACK in the printer... tried to print a picture.... still came out black and blue (and no... I didn't do anything to bruise it!   ).

I have tried searching on the HP site and only info is to replace the cartridge when the ink shows running low - nothing in the troubleshooting section on this TYPE printing problem... and after searching this site for QUITE some time, I haven't seen this problem mentioned here either.  I also talked to a 'computer geek' friend - said he had the same problem when he reinked the color cartridge too, but never found a solution to the problem.

Is there some TRICK to reinking the color cartridge? Has anyone run into this problem when they have reinked a cartridge? Any ideas on a solution besides purchasing a new color cartridge?
:-/ HP and the other manufacturer do not support re-using cartridges, and in some cases it voids your warranty. It may just be $$$$ to them, but I've never heard complaints from using a major branded cartridge, EXCEPT for the price.try going into the hp software help page.....or the print manager......

Solve : NIC cards won't default to 10Base2?

Answer»

Hello - I have half a dozen jumperless combination ISA NE2000 compatible cards - badged "Ansel" with a UM9008F chip onboard.  These all worked FINE on a 10Base2 network.  Then I used them in pairs with 10BaseT cross-over cables - again they all worked fine.
Now I want to RESTORE the 10Base2 network - but these cards won't default to the original 10Base2 (BNC connector) setting - like they're supposed to:  auto-selection is 'stuck' on the RJ45 connector !!  If it was just one, I'd think 'faulty card' - but they're all the same.  I've been mooching around driver/utility sites all day, and it seems that some companies provided a disk with their cards which allowed user-defined connection - but all the utilities I've downloaded so far (over a dozen !) are restricted to defining Interrupt and Port only.

Does anyone know of any way to reset these jumperless/PnP cards to default - or does anyone have a program which allows user selection of the connector ?  Am using WIN95b/NetBeui - or I would be if the cards would behave !

Regards

Colin

unistall them from the device manager....where did you get them from.....and what net system are you running......10x10=100mps= to a standard network card....I TRIED the usual de-installing, re-loading drivers etc, and have narrowed down the problem as being on the cards themselves, as I've even installed a couple (one at a time) on completely clean systems: i.e. using blank HDDs and completely fresh WIN95 installs.  There are no transmit pulses, and thus no voltages present at the BNC connector.  Dead in the water.

I wanted to re-constitute the 10Base2 LAN as ducted/ through the wall wiring is already in place.  If I can't solve the problem today then I'll buy 'em a hub and some new CABLE and get the CARPETS up - but it would be nice to make the kit work as before - as the original designer intended !!

Regards, Colin

Try another  bank in the mobo.........or go into the bios...to enable all pnp hardware.....Just wanted to say thanks for your advice on this one.

In the end I gave up and scrounged a box of old 3com cards that were destined for the skip.  Installed these and network running ok now, as solid as a rock.

Regards

Colin
3Coms are definitely a better choice.

Solve : mother board problem?

Answer»

ok im building a computer for an uncle of mine in mexico but it wont power up i have checked all the conection 3 times and then checked the mannual but i get the same problem it powers for a few cpu fan spins for 3 SECONDS and then the computer shuts down it does not power up at all the fan spins and that is it i can see power but it does not start
im asking you guys for some help so LAY it on me

o and the computer i have is the same spc's as this on

i got a matsonic ms9307c series mainboard sis 645DX chipset pentium 4 mainboard

with a pentium 4 celeron CPU 1.8 GHZ

1x 512 DRR

radion 9200

400 watt power

and a 40 gb hard drive segate

2 things I can think of:

1) U put connector for pwr switch in wrong
2) Ur PSU is overloaded or not switched on in the backAnd these are all new components? You don't even get to POST? Are there any beeps?

Have you ever assembled a computer before? Have you tried removing and reseating everything?

I GUESS you COULD try to swap out one component at a time with known good ones. Have you stripped it down to motherboard, CPU, smallest stick of appropriate RAM, generic PCI video CARD and floppy?

Solve : monitor goes black after 20 seconds?

Answer»

At first after two hours or so of use the MONITOR would get dark in a few areas then go black. Then it went black in less and less time, NEW it goes black in 15 SECONDS.  :-/Check that monitor on another computer, and then check that computer with another monitor. Let's SEE where the problem lies.

A few more details like make/model/age of monitor, type of computer, graphics card, etc. are always helpful in any post as well. Quote

Solve : Replace mobo??

Answer»

I wanted to replace my motherboard so it can support pci e 16x, only problem is... I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO WHATSOEVER!  Are there certain complications and rules I must go by when trying to select the right mobo?  I was at newegg and this mobo caught my eye...

http://stores.tomshardware.com/rating_getprodrev.php/product_id=5743662/id_type=M

Oh and I was planning to just use ram and stuff from the old mobo..What are the SPECIFICATIONS of the hardware you wish to transfer?

You should keep in mind that you may use older hardware, and that my become a BOTTLENECK to your NEW motherboard its capabilities.

If you have absolutely no idea of what you are doing, consult an expert and have him transfer hardware before you damage hardware components.Hey Raptor, you seem to know alot about this type of stuff.. Might you be able to talk to me on AIM or MSN MESSENGER?

Solve : Overheating??

Answer»

My computer has been powering off at random.

This is NOT a crash...

I am running XP SP2.

Seemingly at random, my computer will power off. When it reboots, it acts as if nothing had happened. (In other words, no "Windows unexpectedly shut down"-type messages).

When it reboots, all of my menus are exactly like they were AT THE TIME OF MY LAST REBOOT. In other words "Recent Documents", etc. (Start Menu AND inside Office) do not reflect what I was working on since the last reboot. (Although all saved documents are indeed saved - just not on any Recently Used menus.)

It happens pretty consistently when I RUN NAV - but not in the same "place" in the scan. Ditto for Spyware Blaster. Sometimes when updating AvantGo on my Palm, but not always. Also in Safe mode with NAV.

Obviously, I don't have enough information to search out what's wrong. But it's all the information I have.

I’m thinking it MAY be a heat-sync issue… For no good reason, I blew compressed, cold air, over my fans every few minutes while running NAV last night, and it didn’t power off for the first time in a month.

So, do different programs and processes run at different temperatures?

And, is there a utility to monitor this?

Thanks!

Not yet, but I will.hold down the del key on boot......bios screen setup display cpu temp.OK, so I downloaded the PC Wizard.

I am currently running at 66 deg C.

Don't know if that's high or not, I do know my fan runs constantly.

So, we'll see.

Thanks for the tip!Neat utility. I rebooted, and my processor was 53 deg C, my HD was 34 deg HD.

I ran Ad-Aware, CPU did not change, HD went up to 41.

Running Norton now, seeing what's cooking...

Thankswhat cpu is this.......amd //intel all cpu run hot.....thats why the heatsink/fans is sitting on them.....more info on sytem specs.......if you are a gamernut maybe you need this>http://www17.tomshardware.com/howto/20050609You might want to try turning off 'Automatic Reboot" in Startup & Recovery.Sixty-six degrees celcius would be considered very warm. For an Intel processor. However, if you have an AMD processor. There should be no need to worry. (According to AMD)

Installing a more powerful cooling solution is advised. It is a P4...

If by "Gamernut", you mean, have I played Minesweeper while on hold once or twice, then Yes.

Otherwise, um, no.Any hardcore GAMER has had to have played Minesweeper at least once. The action, the excitement. Ho Chi Min all over.

For a Pentium processor, I would consider sixtysix Celcius degrees to be very high. It should be no more than fourty Celcius degrees. fifty Celcius degrees at most

I suggest that you do the following:

1. Clean fans/heatsinks
2. Set fans to maximum RPM capable. BIOS may be using Smart fan functions to determine how fast they should operate during certain temperatures.
3. Remove excessive dust.
4. Install more powerful and efficient cooling solutions.

Solve : IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error on startup?

Answer»

I have had no troubles with my Cyberpower XPLORER X64-PRO notebook (heres a link to the specs: http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/hig...onfigurator_top ) until today when I went to start it up I received a BSOD with the following info:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP: 0x0000000A (0x0A050029, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804E7808)

I know this type of error could be hardware related (RAM) or the CPU overheating. I have not had any serious problems since I BOUGHT the notebook in April and I wasn't doing anything the DAY before that could cause this error ( ie. ADDING hardware, changing settings, etc.). The error occurs when I boot up regularly and in safe mode. I tried using last known good config. but that didn't work either.

I will get as far as the Windows logo and then it changes to the BSOD.

How can I fix this since I really don't want to have to open the case or send it back to the company.

ThanksTo try to work around this issue: If Easy CD Creator is still installed, uninstall it, or uninstall only the DirectCD componentEasy CD Creator was never installed.  Even if it was I would be unable to get anywhere to uninstall it since my computer will not get passed the loading of Windows XP screen.ok fred  have a look here>http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=165863&sd=RMVP

Here's the link again:

I have Windows XP Pro/ SP2

The microsoft link was for Windows 2000.  I clicked on the one for Windows XP and I will see it it helps.

Thanksi would send it back......warrenty........can see if it had that specs.why it has an  ac97 sound card?

something to read>http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/2274/?o=80Thanks for the link but everyone else with the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error seems to just have it randomly sometimes depending on what they are doing sometimes not.  The difference is my laptop won't even get passed the windows loading screen.

I have tried safe mode, last known good config., and even tried to boot off the XP cd but I still end up with the same error. I pretty much can't do anything except acess my BIOS and I tried disabling ang messing around with the settings there but it seems to have had no effect.

I removed everything connected to the laptop (mouse, printer, etc.) but I don't really want to have to open the case if I don't absolutely have to.

Thanks for your help so far. Before i desert you fred...when it boots up......tap the underside of it to inject life into the hard drive...maybe it needs a full charge on the adapter......thats what i do with tosh.lap...(..tap it...on boot up.. suggestion)....lazy drive.....

Solve : Best Track-Ball mouse?

Answer»

Hello does anybody know what the best track-ball mouse on the market is?

Before you think i'm dumb for not just going optical, my reason is: I am a serious gamer and i move my hand too close to the mousepad that opticals pick up movement when i do not want them to, even with my friend's MX510.

My current ball mouse gives me perfect response, except when moving accross  the pad at VERY high speeds. I think it is time to upgrade, and i would like to check out the best track-ball MICE on the market to see if it is an improvement.

Shape wise, i like them SLIMMER than most. But i am definately willing to take anything i can get, as i bet that high-end track-ball mice are few and FAR between these DAYS. I have a lot of extra cash so money isnt a biggie.

ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks a lot!!Well, you seem to like your current mouse... I'm sure that the manufacturer of that mouse has come out with an upgraded version of your same model... What kind do you have now?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Check the Logitech offerings.

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/categories/US/EN,crid=2133&categoryid=412Been using Logitech trackballs for many years. Wouldn't have anything else.I have been using a Logitech M-S48a, which is probably one that came with one of my dads  old computers from the late 90's.

just to clarify, when i said trackball i didnt mean these at the bottom http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/productlist/US/ENcrid=2141
but i did mean this http://www.ixbt.com/peripheral/cheapmouses/p2/m-s48a-1.jpg

i couldnt find any non-cordless ball mice at the logitech website, except for the kids ones =\ i dont really trust cordless. My friends have had bad experiences with interference.

If worst comes to worst i will just continue to use my current one (the one in the 2nd link above), but i really would just like to know if my desired mouse even EXISTS. thanks a lot for the help so far though, its better than i have done.

Solve : HD or Windows prob.??

I am having a PROBLEM with a Pentium 3 300MHz, Win98, Computer.  when it FIRST boots up it SAYS, "See Master Hard Disk: S.M.A.R.T.  Command Failed     Press F1 to Resume".  Then it goes into DOS ScanDisk and freezes up.
Is this probably a shot hard drive?  Oh, the last time it was working, it just shut off. Quote

...Is this probably a shot hard drive? ....

It's dead!   BTW, S.M.A.R.T.
thank you.go into the BIOS setup < keys del/ f1/2 on boot> and disable it.......now save the data to disk before  the hardrive  fails.......Yep, disable that drive's S.M.A.R.T. then immediately slave it to another computer's hard drive and save the data. That's really all you can do. Cheers!

Solve : Rame does not match?

Answer»

I have 256 M RAM on my Dell P3 machine.  When I bootup, the first SCREEN (black with white letters) says I have 128 M RAM.  Once Windows ME BOOT up,when I go to control panel, system Hardware, the screen shows I have 256 M RAM.  I seem to be having low MEMERY errors lately.  Thoughts? One of those RAM chips is possibly not seated properly...i find it interesting that the BIOS does not recognise the CORRECT amount and WinME does.

Aren't computers fun ? ?

patio.  CHECK that ram are both in same family. i.e. PC133.Are you perhaps sharing 128MB with your videocard? If that is even possible for Pentium III machines..

Solve : Lines On Monitor?

Answer»

My monitor has some bright lines on the TOP of it.  The owner claims it is because it's about to CRASH.  I was wondering if this was true.  The lines always appear when trying to download something.  They start at the top and work their way slowly down, NEVER REACHING past about 1 inch below the top.  In addition, the screen will start to go BLACK up at the top.

Solve : JumpDrive not working?

Answer»

I dropped my JUMPDRIVE and now it doesn't work. At LEAST that is the only thing that I can think of that would cause the problem. It worked, then it didn't.

I have very important files on this JumpDrive. Is there a way to recover them?Send it to a professional data recovery firm and expect to pay a high price.Check it very carefully for a tiny lock switch.Where would this switch be?  On the drive. No kidding... It's on the drive!   I thought it might be. I assume that your joking .

I just wanted to know if there were a specific place to look, what it would look like. You said to look very careful. That gave me the impression that maybe it was hard to see.

Thanks for the help anyway. No kidding... It's on the drive!   I thought it might be. I assume that your joking.

Thanks for the help anyway. The quality of the answers depends on the quality of the question, perhaps it may have been a good idea to give us a little more detail.
It's your drive, we don't even know the brand.  OK. Must be misunderstanding SOMEWHERE. Whatever the case I do appreciate help. I have a Lexar, 128MB, red & black JumpDrive.

Does this clarify the question? It doesn't look like it has a lock switch on it.

What happens when you plug it in?
Have you tried it on a different computer?
Remember it needs drivers for win98."What happens when you plug it in?"

Nothing. The little light on it doesn't even come on... I plugged another one in and it wirked fine.

"Have you tried it on a different computer?"

I just tried it at my office, and still no go.

"Remember it needs drivers for win98."

I assume that these are allready INSTALLED as it worked on both computers before.Internal damage from a drop broke some connector inside? I had no idea these THINGS were so fragile!

Solve : CanNotGetToMyLogin or desktopWhenTurningOnComputer?

Answer»

The computer was turning on and off again and again so I disconnected the computer from the outlet. By the next day the computer had not worked normally and untill now I have not fixed the problem. My computer still turns off by itself. My computer is a Tiger, windows XP, at least 3 G of memory and 1 to 2 G proccesor. I do not know what other information you need from me to help me with my problem.
This is what happens when I turn on my computer. The screen turns black and there is a line that appears on and off  on the top left corner of the screen but NOTHING else happens.  I tryed to turning off the computer and pressing on F8 and it gives me a list. I do not knøw what to do after that. I am guessing that it is ms dos command menu. If you can please help me as soon as possible.

Well Tiger sells computers, but what is the motherboard make and model. I am sure the RAM and processor information is incorrect. Did it ever work correctly? Exactly what happened prior to all of this? Have you monkeyed around inside the case?

Usual suspects are:

Bad RAM (check with memtest86 - google for it)
Bad power supply unit (Try it with a known working unit)
Overheating (check fans and temps in BIOS)
Improperly seated RAM or cards (remove and reseat)

Let us know what you find.I have not INSTALLED anything before I started having problems.  I never opened it or installed any hardware or software like any day I started my computer and found out that it was not working.

----------
My computer is not working after power failure. There was a storm in the area, during the storm the power went on and off, on and off, on and off, for ten minutes.

However my computer was always connected all this time to the surge protector at the time of the occurrence I decided to proceed to unplug all the computer equipment from the outlet after the storm.

When the power was restored I connected the computer back to the surge protector and when I plugged in the protector I tried and tried to turn the computer back on however, the computer is not booting up all the way.

When I turn it on it begins as always doing the memory test then stops and all that I get next is a blank screen and a blinking dash on the left top corner.

I tried to type any commands after the blinking dash and it would not let me type, at that point my only option if I want to turn it off to try again I have to disconnect the computer from the surge protector or to turn it off from the motherboard switch or to press the reset button.  I try to turn it off a few times just to get same results.

How can I find what went wrong during the many times of power failure with my computer?  How can I solve my problem?

I can't access any of my computer system information from my computer itself since I can't get it restarted.  I have previously printed out some information about my system.  The following is information about my system:

How is your hard-drive formatted in case you need ot look at data recovery? Is it FAT32 or NTFS?

You definitely need an UPS or Uninterruptrible Power Supply, as well as a surge protector, if the power supply is that bad.

Solve : dvd rom won't read?

Answer»

recently my DVD rom decided not to read any media type at all. i've been inside the pc a couple of times, but didn't mess with any roms.  my cd seems to be ok.
running xp home 450megs. dell  xps.  it was working when i bought the pc used. uninstalled and reinstalled several times, also did a clean install a couple of times and that didn't fix it.  any help would be grateful as i want to sell the pc.Even though it may open and close (mechanical) it may be a dead drive (optical) if it can't read. It sounds like you have GONE above and beyond the usual fixes for this. Can you try the drive on another computer to see if it is kaput?Have you made any chnages to your SYSTEM just before this started? Are you using Service Pack 2? have you been keeping-up with Windows Updates?

[glb]Flame[/glb]How old is it? Was it used heavily? I'm thinking it is a dead drive. If it is not working when you reformatted, then maybe your drivers are not installed properly... Try using the most UPDATED frivers from the drive manufacturer's website...

[glb]Flame[/glb]i don't know how old it is. maybe a couple of years and the one i bought it from most likely used it a lot. i tried to get the updated driver from website and it wouldn't let me have the update page.  may try that tomorrow. right now i am going to unplug the cd rom and and just try the dvd rom in case it is in that cable they are both hooked to.i give up.  i guess the drive is shot.  i will sell it as is. they can buy a new one for 40 bucks.
