Use a PROGRAM such as Partition Magic.

You can also do it using the Windows XP CD-ROM or a bootable diskette, but this will require you to reformat the Hard Disk Drives and loose all data.Great,

Thanks.Good luck. Should you require ASSISTANCE repartitioning your Hard Disk Drive, do not hesitate to POST.

[glb]Flame[/glb]I just got more info. It seems she can only not see the things that I sent to her which is very strange because everyone else can. There was a windows MEDIA file-she has win media yet still COULD not play it. Also, I sent her a link to a website which she could pull up but could not see the pics, only writing.
Yes, she used to see it all.

Solve : Dell Video problem?

Answer»

I bought a Dell Optiplex GX110 off of ebay a couple months ago. I installed win98SE on it, and got the REST of the drivers I needed off of the Dell website.

A couple days ago I installed Medal of Honor: ALLIED Assault, and when I go to play, I can't see anything.  Everything is milky and washed out. I tried adjusting the video setting in the game, but no go. I have no idea what video this thing has in it, it's integrated into the motherboard. I went into the system properties to see what the CARD was, and all it says is "Intel(R) 82810E Graphics CONTROLLER"

Is there any way to FIND out exactly what kind of video this thing has, or what? Quote

No known issues with MoH AA.
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-010467.htm

Make sure you have the latest drivers.I believe the GX110 which uses the i810 only has offiially 1 meg RAM and the rest is allocated from system memory up to about 12 meg max. I can't see that being able to play any of today's graphics intensive games well. It should work perfectly well with all applications OTHER than games. The processor upgrade path is generally limited to about 1 Ghz as well, so no gaming joy there as well.

These were designed as business machines and do that extraordinarily well, although I prefer the GX1 obviously as the graphics are discrete chips, not shared memory.Onboard videocards mean nothing but trouble for unexperienced players.

Solve : connect sata hdd to ide motherboard?

Answer»

hi ,,i bought a new hdd , 200 gig sata,, i also bought a connecter PLUG that fits into mother board (mother board is ide) and sata LEAD plugs into it also ,,this is supposed to allow me to run new hdd,, but computer says no hdd,, to i have to go into bios to change things??   thanxian:

If your computer's BIOS is too old it may not support a hard drive that large.  Check the documentation at the motherboard manufacturer's website to see how large a hard drive it will support.

If it will not support one that large, you may be able to download and install a flash BIOS update.  Just be careful when you install it, because doing it incorrectly could make the motherboard unusable.

Solve : Trying to locate system battery?

Answer»

A neighbor of mine has an old Emerson computer. The model NUMBER is either 500EC or ET200 (the front SAYS one number and the BACK says the other). The machine boots up but goes no further than an error msg saying replace system battery. I know a bit about electronics so I think I know what a system battery should look like but I am unable to locate anything in the unit that looks like a battery. The only place that looks like there MIGHT have been a battery there is a circle marked S1 with 2 holes on the circuit board. I have no way of knowing if something like a battery holder and battery was there at one time and was removed. Does anyone have any information on the system battery for this unit? Some of you will undoubtedly think why bother with this computer but I would like to know if it can work. Thanks.Modern system batteries are round about the size of a dime, but thicker. Older ones had them built into the motherboard and an replacement could be soldered on later. I don't know for sure about the Emerson. I had an Emerson XT at one time, but never had occasion to change out a battery. What KIND of machine is this? System specifications?Computer is vintage 1990.Thats your area of expertise , then.

Solve : - 5 vdc supply requirement?

Answer»

I am trying to upgrade the power supply in an older Gateway 450 with the Pentium 3 processor.  The original power supply has a wire for -5 vdc supply to the mother board.  The new ANTEC SP500 does not have this supply.

Is there a need for the -5 vdc supply on the Pentium3 and its associated hardware?  Will installing the supply without this cause damage to the system?

Thanks for your help.

Chris.Is the "older Gateway 450" a Pentium II or III?Sorry, I wrote Pentium 3.

It is a Pentium III 450 mHz on a Jabil BX motherboard.

Support documents indicate that the board "must have standard ATX 20-pin power connector"

Chris-5V is optional for the PCI-bus only.  Antec SP500 will work with no problem, assuming it fits in the case you have.  Make sure the Gateway is not a Micro-ATX.  ATX has 4 mounting screws, Micro-ATX has 3 mounting screws.

SP-500

Antec says:
"...24-pin power connector with detachable 4-pin section for backwards compatibility with ATX 20-pin motherboards..."Thanks for the info.  It is a full tower case, with a 4 hole mounting CONFIGURATION for the supply.  It may need some slight modding to adjust the opening, but I have not removed the old supply yet to verify if there are any adapter plates in place.

I remember reading somewhere that the -5 v is optional, but it's good to have a second opinion.

Chris. If the case is ATX, any ATX power supply will fit.Unless it is a Dell or Gateway. Their PSU are proprietary. Dell has some of the voltage lines switched and Gateway are sized differently. As a follow-up for those interested, I spoke with ANTEC support and they ASSURED me that connecting the supply would not hurt anything.  If the motherboard requires the -5v signal, the computer just will not boot.

During a more careful examination of the Gateway support documents, I located a page which clearly states the the -5v and -12v signals are not used by Gateway motherboards, but are legacy connections used by older floppy controllers and built-in SERIAL ports.  I will try hooking up the supply and post my results.

Thanks again for everyone's replies.

Solve : ISDN Connection?

Answer»

Can anyone tell if you can run ISDN through a router so that 2 computers can be on net at the same time.Yep!

The router may have it's own IP address and act as a gateway so that you may SUBNET the rest of your LAN (home network) to have as many computers as you desire connect through the ONE router.

Your ISP may be able to detect this and not allow you to use the router this WAY without paying for the additional nodes.

Solve : Motherboard and CPU help?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I don't know much about computers (I know the basics) and a friend of mine is just learning how to build a computer and needs help, so I thought I'd get on and ASK the question for him, as he really needs to know.

It's about using the right CPU with the right motherboard. He's studying so he can build a computer, but he doesn't understand the compatability part, and reading his texbook, neither do I.

1. If someone has a motherboard that supports up to 900MHz, can they use a 1GHz CPU with it?

2. How about a 400MHz on and the same motherboard?

3. Can someone use a Slot 1 CPU with a socket type motherboard?

If anyone can answer these questions, it would be a big help. It's so confusing!

#1 - No
#2 - Probably Not
#3 - Definitely Not

Check the motherboard manual for proper and supported CPU's. Only these will work, and some jumpers or switches may need to be set to correctly identify the processor being USED. You can damage your system with the wrong components. At best it will not work.I smell homework. Quote

I hope I didn't help withhomework. I thought I had left that behind me years ago! Thanks for your help.

I'll pass that on.

No, it's not 'homework' (he's 23, so I hope he's well past homework by now!lol) but like I said, he's studying to build a computer. He's doing it via correspondence, and so help wise it's very hard to ask a teacher or tutor for help when you don't have one! The questions I gave were an exercise in the textbook, and I thought if he could see the answers for them, it MIGHT help him. I was just sick of him bugging me for help, because I didn't understand any of it!

Cheers! ChanelleCome back anytime, then. Quote

1.  DEPENDS on the motherboard.
2.  Depends on the motherboard.
3.  No.  But the reverse is true, a Socket 370 can be used with a Slot 1 motherboard, with an adapter.

Solve : Crashed Computer - Need Backup Help?

Answer»

My laptop was RUNNING WINDOWS 2000 and it crashed. (so i have been told).  I have the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH - it comes up when you start the computer and says its dumping the physical memory and then it tries to start windows, then comes up to the blue screen again and then restarts. It does this continually until you turn the computer off.

Ok- I have the disc for windows 2000 and want to repair it.  I have tried - either you have to have a repair disc (which I don't have) or to repair the console, you have to have an ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD (which I don't have).

I heard you can connect computers and backup the computer (so I won't lose data).  I don't want to reinstall windows, because it will overwrite my files and data.  Can you somehow back up the data or connect the laptop to another computer?  I don't know how to.  Can you do this in DOS?  Can I stop the restarting and save my stuff?

HELP ME!!!

            kris:

The BSOD should display an error code followed by the word STOP that starts with a zero and an X and ends with eight numbers, or eight numbers and letters.  Let me know what that error code is and i'll find out what the problem is and (hopefully) be ABLE to tell you how to fix it.

Best regards,
DocI assume that mean the code on the blue screen right?  If that's what you mean, the screen goes by so fast that you can't even read what it says.  We've had to watch the screen several TIMES just to GET the words "dump physical memory"  The screen flashes by in under a second. Can you start in safe mode?no.

You can try the following:

  • Place important documents on Diskettes (Not photos, too large)
  • Install a CD/DVD burner and burning software (Such as Nero)
  • Buy an external Hard Disk Drive (USB/Firewire)

Solve : Hard drive won't show up in My Computer?

Answer»

If this has already been posted here or should be in the Windows section then I APOLOGIZE.  I have run into all sorts of posts with people having this problem but none of the solutions work for me.
So I just installed a second HD on my comp.  120gb Seagate as a slave to the 40gb Seagate that is in 2 partitions.  I initialized it and formatted it using fdisk to give it Fat32 partitioning.. it didn't show up in my computer but i can still browse to it and put a shortcut to it on my desktop.  FIGURED maybe since it wasn't formatted in Windows then maybe I'd do that.  Reformatted and partitioned it in NTFS and got it online with a drive letter and all.  Can still explore it or open it but it still won't show up in my computer.
My primary drive is drives C & D
DVD-rw is E
CD-rw is F (also doesn't show up in my computer)
New HD is G (not showing up)
Did i mess up because i installed the 2nd cd rom drive at the same time?  I've READ where people say to give the hard disks lower drive letters but I can't figure out how to reassign the drive letters on the optical drives.

If someone knows a solution to this then PLEASE let me know because it's driving me nuts.  I don't want to be stuck with just a shortcut to my brand spanking new drive on the desktopYou can reassign drive letters from the same area where you reformatted the Hard Disk Drives with NTFS.I can SEE how you right-click on the hard drive (from disk management) and reassign drive letters but can't figure out how to do it for the Removable storage where it lists the cd and dvd drives.  I can open it up in properties and see what drive letter it's assigned too but it won't let me change it.  Any ideas on how to change the removable drive letters? Solve : Computer Crash, Then Wont start?

Answer»

Hi, I'm new to this, but I've searched the forum and there isnt any other posts that relate to my problem, so here goes.

Basically what happens is when I use my computer to run a program, usually games(even ones with really low graphics), my computer just turns off. I guess its like a crash but it doesnt restart like it would if it was over heating and when I press the power BUTTON to boot up after nothing happens. Its like its not even plugged in! So i remove the plug from the mains and wait a while and then plug it back in, then it starts fine?!

I've had this problem for a while, but it only happened on one game so i just assumed my computer couldnt handle it.

This is a breif discription of my pc;
CPU; ATHLON 2700+
M/B; MSI KT4AV-L
GFX; Radeon 9800pro 128(brand new)
RAM; 512mb DDR333 Crucial
P/S; 550W
Snd; Creative Sound card (dont remeber which one)

I also have 4 case fans and a coolmaster heat sink on the go which keeps my CPU 46 and CASE 32 (C). 1 DVD driver and 1 CD-RW, Floppy and all the other usual stuff.

I'd really appriciate it if you guys could help me out, although its probably got something to do with the fact i built this pc 4 years ago and didn't use all of my brain when purchasing the mobo  What type of PSU is installed?q-tec 550w dual fan

Definitely not a keeper.

But before looking into replacing the power supply unit, do the following and see if it still happens:

1. Right click on My Computer
2. Properties

I tried that last night, it didn't work. I guess at least its not a system fault/Overheating?

There wasnt anything in my EVENT log. My computer just shuts down like a power cut, i guess thats why there isnt anything. Its not my video drivers, I'm certain because I've reinstalled them(Omega Drivers) and tried the default ones (ATI). I doubt its the game that needs patching because it happens on all my games.
Power suppky is really suspect....ok thanks for your help !! I got this message just now

Solve : mouse and keyboard?

Answer»

i just got this new custom built PC.and the mouse and keyboard dont work. i should clarify the fact that to the extent of my knowledge they never did.my bro made the pc and has had it for a couple of months he got fed up with the mouse and keyboard so he was GOING to throw it away so i took it thats the only problem that i know of. so how would i fix this problem? If the mouse and/or keyboard are defective, you don't fix them; you replace them. If they're new enough you might still be able to get them exchanged.

Have you tried a different keyboard and mouse, just to make sure that the problem doesn't perhaps lie ELSEWHERE?i have tried different keboards and mice its in the compgraphics card missing.......or the on board one is not enabled.

more info needed.....on system used.....i am a bit of a noob so could u explain what u meen by
"on board one is not enabled"
also what do u meen by the system as in windows or who made it?Make sure they are plugged into the correct sockets.
(Look for little symbols near each socket)

Do they show up in your device manager?
(Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware)u know what my bro must of had them working at one time cause it has a password YES they are plugged in right i THINK he may have tuched the plugs (on the inside of the pc and done something)
is there a way to fix the plugs?
List make model of the motherboard ..........does it have a graphics card.....?maybe someone left it out of the build.it should have a graphics card.........and i dont know about the mother board (he made it in this summer program callede tech venture)Not so long ago we had a poster who had a keyboard/mouse problem, one of the very first responses was, "Are they plugged into the correct sockets?"
The answer was yes, 60 posts later... the answer was no.

Solve : device manager missing category DVD/CD-ROM drives?

Answer»

The category DVD/CD-ROM is gone from the device manager. All my DVD/CD-ROM  are being detected as hard disk drives. So I can't burn either dvds or CDS. I also have troubles reading them sometimes. Please help.

I have windows xp.

EdgarTry removing them. Restart the COMPUTER to allow for redetection.I tried. They're not listed under any category in "device manager" now. The category DVD/CD-ROM is not showin up yet.

Windows explorer is still "thinking" my dvd/cd-rom drives are hard disks.

EdgarChange BIOS (CMOS setup) configuration. After you check the BIOS settings, check each device in Windows device manager to see what the status is.

Does it say the device is working properly, or does it GIVE an ERROR code number?  If an error code, let us know what it is.

Do you have the driver CD that came with the DVD drive?

Solve : Problem with Palm Pilot?

Answer»

Hello
I have a Palm Pilot III which I bought back in 1998 and still use today - but I recently threw away the computer I use to sync it with and want to instead transfer all the information on it to a Palm Vx that I OBTAINED from a friend. The issue is that I do not know how to do this GIVEN (a) my new computer does not have the original desktop software to connect to my Palm III, (b) my new computer does not have a SERIAL cable connector, (c) the Palm Vx has a different connector which also does not connect to my new computer, and (d) I do not have the software to run the new Palm Vx. Lastly, I am keen to basically transfer all the info on my Palm III into my Microsoft Outlook software, and then get the new Palm Vx to uptake all the info from my updated Outlook (which will contain in particular all my address book from my old Palm III) and so sync going forwards with Outlook. Is anybody able to help me? THANKS a lot in advance. Rony
RDouek:

Purchase a serial-to-USB adapter or serial-to-FireWire adapter (depending on what type of PORT your new computer has) so you may connect your Palm Pilot to your new computer and upload the files.

Solve : Adding IDE HD to New PC?

Answer»

I bought a new computer last week that has a 200Gb SATA drive.  I have an old computer with an 60Gb IDE drive and I was going to add the old drive to the new computer for backup storage.

Looking at the new PC, however, it only has one IDE CONNECTOR on the motherboard and it has a CD-ROM and DVD burner connected to that cable already.

Any way to get this thing connected to this PC?

I can remove the CD-ROM and connect the HD and this works, but I'd like to have EVERYTHING

Any hint or tips appreciated!

ColinAdd a longer IDE cable with two connectors.

The one IDE cable on the motherboard has two connectors on it already - one for the CD-ROM drive and one for the DVD-Writer.

I need a third connector for my HD.

ColinAdd PCI IDE/ATA controller card.

Do you only have one IDE channel? I have not SEEN that before.Ya, it only has one IDE channel.  Didn't know this when I bought it (it's a new HP Pavillion).  Might have to go the PCI route like what  C_C suggested (but I really didn't want to use up a PCI slot - need it for a TV tuner).

Hmmm....

Does it only have 3 PCI slots then?

You can buy an external casing for your IDE HDD so that you can connect it to an USB port.

Don't tell me that it only has 1 or 2 USB ports as well!I'll have to take a look again, but I'm pretty sure that there was only a Primary IDE connector (the other connector next to it was a smaller floppy connector).

I have plenty of PCI and USB ports available, but if I'm going to spend $$ for new hardware to use this old HD, I might as well get myself a true backup external HD.

Thanks for your help.

What do you think is inside the expensive external DEVICES?

If I were you, I would look into a conversion kit. That is, if your older HDD is still in good shape. No damaged sectors and no strange noises. Not quite suitable as a backup drive, otherwise.I think the internal PCI card which will allow you to add up to 4 more IDE devices would be the way to go. Easy to find on eBay for $10 or so. No need to pay for an extra drive if you already have one! Save some $$$$ It will work as well.

I have read the chapter on how to upgrade it (although i would get someone else to do this) OR should I flog it as it is? If so does anyone know roughly how much it should go for with or without upgrade?Depends entirely on what you are going to use it for.

Quote

If so does anyone know roughly how much it should go for with or without upgrade

Depends heavily on the components inside.I do not use the computer ANYMORE as I have a new one. It has windows 98 and i have used internet on it, dvds etc. The motherboard uses intel 443bx AGPset. 256MB. I am not a spec expert but just WANDERED it's worth.Miss Ismail ...... Unless you are strapped for cash .....I would just hang onto it ....as a spare in case your new one packs it in at some point ...... What's it worth .......well not much except its fully functional. ( perhaps $50 )
You might wish to consider donating it to say a school or to some organization who collect old working pcs and sends them to 3rd world countries .

dl65  No I am not strapped for cash. The school I WORK at has got computers that are far advanced. AND the local charity shop doesn't accept electrical items due to health and safety. so the idea was to sell it at a carboot and use WHATEVER I get towards school. thanks anyway.Maybe $35 or so on eBay. Go ahead and put it up for sale. You have nothing to LOSE except the posting fee.

The specs are not outstanding, but would make a good usable system for someone. I would not spend any money on upgrading it. It has all the value it has right now.Nice advice dl65.

Solve : custom built pc wont start?

Answer»

I built my own PC about 3 months ago, and havent had any problems since getting a HD that worked properly... Anyways, I was playing WoW last night, when I heard a loud POP, and my PC shut off. I WAITED a few minutes and pushed the power BUTTON. Nothing happened. I looked inside, and the light on my motherboard was on, as was the laser on my mouse. So i flipped off the PSU and turned it back on, then tried everything again. Still nothing happening. My guess is I fried something, but I cant find out what. Everything looks ok on my motherboard, processor, and video card / RAM / etc. Im going to take apart and re-attach the wires to the power button now. Any advice would be appreciated.

System Specs:

ASUS P4S800D-X motherboard
Pentium 4 3.2 ghz processor
Seagate 160gig IDE HD
Memorex 52x CDRW drive
1024 mb Kingston PC3200 ram
500watt Raidmax PSU that came with the case
ATI Radeon 9550 vid card
Windows XP Pro w/ SP2Anyways, I was playing WoW last night, when I heard a loud pop, and my PC shut off.

Check your CPU sometimes that noise happens when one of the clips has broken on the CPU Fan mount.I checked the fan, and the mount. Everything looks fine. The sound I was referring to was more of an electrical short or spark sorta noise.. It's leading me to believe that some component burned out.Use a known working PSU.Agreed. Power supply is the most likely culprit here. Try using one from another computer (of sufficient wattage) to check this theory out for free. One last thing...

I can turn on the PSU and the light on my motherboard comes on. Im assuming this means that some power is flowing through onto the board? Could it be that the PSU is only sending power to certain things?Maybe, or a very little power to all things, but you need tostart removing the variables from the problem.Light on motherboard is +5V from PSU, drives and fans are +5V and +12V.  On unused 4-pin power plug, check for +12V (yellow to black).

Solve : Modem won't hang up!!?

Answer»

I am working on a Compaq PRESARIO 7598 with a Agere Win Modem (aftermarket).  The modem will dial out just fine but will not hang up when finished LEAVING the line open.  I am running windows 98.  I have already performed a format and reinstalled the drivers.  I have also changed the port settings to there lowest levels.  Somebody HELP!!!  This has me so frustrated!!! Shut it down manually, then. The only way I can get it to hang up is to unplug the phone line and plug it back in.I am Jason E. Jones by the way.  The person who started this post. When you connect to the Internet using a Dial-up modem, an icon will appear in the system bar.

Right click on this icon and click on Disconnect. What ISP are you using? Do you see the icon in the lower right corner when connected? Did you test it in Windows control panel?

If you have hyperterminal installed in Windows we can try a few commands there.

If you unplug the line from the modem and turn OFF the computer for 5 minutes, it should do a hard reset in the meantime, until we get this figured out.

Keep in mind that this is a "WinModem" not a nice and real HARDWARE modem, so that at the very worst $10 will SOLVE the problem.I have already tried to do a disconnet manually though the icon in the system tray---still the same thing.  I have tried both Juno and Att net with the same results.  I tested  the modem in the control panel...the computer and modem are communicating fine.  If you could help me in hyperterminal that would be great.  I am thinking about installing a old modem laying around just to see if the same problem exists with it.

Thanks ahead of time

Solve : problem with dvd rom and floppy disk?

Answer»

I ve got some problem with my floppy disk.
when I enable my floppy disk in the bios, the computer said that the floppy disk(s) fail (40).  When I try to use the floppy disk, even i ve inserted a disk, it still said 'please insert a disk'.  The floppy disk's light is always on even i disable it in the bios.  I ve got 2 floppy disk.  both of them like that.

And, I ve got a problem with my dvd rom as well.
i can find the dvd rom in the device manager.  But even i ve inserted a disk, it still said 'please insert a disk', which is the same as floppy disk.

Recently, I ve added a new hard drive.  is it there have CONFLICT?

thank you vy muchFloppy disk flat ribbon cable is inserted the other way around.

Make sure the red line corresponds with pin 1.sorry, i don't know which red line u were talking abt and what pin 1 is. Quote

sorry, i don't know which red line u were talking abt and what pin 1 is.

Pin 1 is designated on both FDD and mainboard FDD connector.

Red line is on the IDE cable.

Turn IDE cable around so that the red line is aligned with Pin1.

If you have no idea what I am on about, check the mainboard manual.Do the hard drives you installed work correctly. Do the terms "MASTER" and "slave" have any meaning to you in the computer sense? Are both floppy's 3 1/2" size. If you look very closely where the floppy cable plugs into the floppy you may see a "1" there. The cable will be red striped on ONE side (although may be a small stripe). THat side of the cable may need to go to Pin 1.

Did this machine USED to function with two floppy drives? If so, the A drive will be the one on the end of the cable and the B drive will be further up the cable.

Let us know.

Solve : PC will not power up with USB devices?

Answer»

Please help,

My P4 titan motherboard with WD SATA will not power up with self powered usb devices plugged in (Memory stick, usb Hardrive, scanner etc)

There is no POST, no screen, no fan noise.  It is as though the PC is not plugged in. (it is though, I checked!)

Have tried CHANGING power supply and a PCI usb hub.
unplugging the problem device will allow the system to boot and plugging the devices in after system boots is fine with none of them exceeding the 500ma power limit.

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks

My computer can not boot up either with my external (FHD2-Pro) Hard Disk Drive connected.

I do not know if there is a work around. Have you tried disabeling booting from USB devices in the BIOS?

is this a self build. It is a self build,

.....I do not know if there is a work around. Have you tried disabeling booting from USB devices in the BIOS?

It does not even get to P.O.S.T let alone read booting information in bios.  The motherboard does not get any power at all with USB devices plugged inI know you said you changed the PSU but it sure sounds like a PSU problem.

"When the computer is powered on, the internal power supply initializes. The power supply doesn’t immediately PROVIDE power to the REST of the computer. First, it determines whether it can supply the proper voltages that the computer’s components require. The power supply sends out a POWER GOOD signal when it determines that it can supply reliable power to the rest of the computer. When the chipset receives this signal, it issues a SYSTEM RESET signal to the processor."

Do you have complete confidence in the size (WATTS) and quality of both PSUs?Both PSU's work fine in other systems and are both 400w "True Power" supplies.

Am thinking about trying a remotely powerd USB1.1 hub
if I can find one cheap enough.

Can you unplug the usb devices then enter bios & have a prowl around in there for the usb setting OPTIONS?Everything looks normal in BIOS but how will this affect anything if power doesn't even get to the BIOS?

I have noticed that the problem gets even worse with PCI devices plugged in (PCI USB hub, PCI Network card etc)  System would not fire up until these were unplugged but only if I tried to fire up with the USB devices plugged in, could  be a problem with the PCI controler.

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I put my first self build together a few months AGO, and the only problem is that sometimes when I POWER up, the PC goes into action, but the monitor stay black. If I then puch reset, it always come on the second time. I would estimate that this now happens 1 time in 10 or something like this.

I have posted about this problem before, and people suggested that I make sure that my video card is fitted properly. I did check this, and even removed it and inserted it again. I think that this did reduce the number of times the error occured for a little while but I am not sure.

Just hoped that someone could offer me some more advice.

MANY thanks in advance of any replies posted.
Kop442000If you are certain that loose or bad hardware was the cause, you should test each component in another computer.

Is the power supply unit adequate ENOUGH for your systems demands?Well I am not certain that bad hardware is the course. I am just going on what people advise me. In any case (pardon the pun), I don't really have another PC to test on.

What about your previous computer?

You can retry to reseat and reconnect all hardware, but it will not lead you to determine the faulty part as quickly as testing it in another computer would.

Solve : Video Memory reading Wrong?

Answer»

Hmm what should I do? My Video Card is only 8MB I know that for a fact and its internal... yes its internal.... The thing is in windows XP it reads the video card as 32MB instead of 8MB. The only Operating SYSTEM that can get it right is Windows 2000.

Video Card Memory Read by Each OS:

Windows 98  4MB

Windows ME 6MB

Windows 2000 8MB

Windows XP 32MB

I really aren't concern its reading it wrong the thing is if I run an application that is over 8MB the computer runs it for about 5 Min before the computer restarts on its own.... I would buy a new video card but I don't have a AGP slot on my motherboard and Im using all my PCI slots... Is there anyway I can tell the computer its 8MB? Besides yelling at it when it resstarts.. BTW any application that is over 8MB The pictures are horrible I mean horribleIt may be caused by the following:

  • Incorrect drivers
  • Incorrect BIOS settings. Allocate more RAM to the videocard
  • Videocard is not supported by pre-Windows XP OS.

This machine is a couple of years old, no problems until yesterday, haven't installed any new hardware or software.

Not overheating, even happens when I start up in the morning. Can make it happen by loading a very long (70 page etc.) document in MS Word and then holding down the scroll bar to scroll down page by page, it will freeze before it gets 1/3 way down.

It's NOT a MS Word problem, if I load the same doc into OpenOffice, same problem occurs.

It's not a virus either.

I figure it is either the graphics card, or the motherboard, or the CPU.It wouldn't hurt to test your ram.

Hard Disk Drive.

You can test the memory using the following tool: Windows Memory DiagnosticO.K. I'll give that a try. If that doesn't work I think I'll reformat and I downloaded from microsoft the bootable disk to download the drivers for xp. then maybe I'll be able to download the rest of the os after that.
Thanks for your help all. I'll LET you know of my progress tomorrow. If windows loaded when he put in another CD Rom drive then he fixed that problem with loading the os, you need a new CD Rom drive.

The other problem you have with windows now, is that some files may be corrupted. Get another Cdrom drive and install windows again. If the same THING happens or you experience other problems i would look at your hard drive.

Solve : Losing Computer Memory?

Answer»

My brother goes to this site that has a lot of video clips, some of them you have to download to see it. When it comes to that, my brother clicks Open, instead of Save, but I still think the video somehow still saves into the computer. EVER since he's been going there, WATCHING videos like crazy, the computer's space has been going down. I lost over 10 gigabytes & it went all the WAY down to 34mb of space left on my computer. I had to delete a bunch of crap (including softwares) just to bring it up to 1 gigabyte, yet it's still going down a little bit. If those videos are saved into the computer somewhere, I'd like to know where so I can delete them (if that's the problem), & I'd like to gain back over 10 gigs again. How about doing a file download ( a small one) and see where the default download spot is on that system. The culprits would be there.

Also delete your temporary internet files (or do a system cleanup (right above defrag).

Then delete the one who is downloading this stuff, or teach him better. They are saved as windows Temporary files.

And they get automatically Re-written over.

But if you want to remove them manually then right click on Internet Exploer and then properties,

The click delete files.

Solve : shared broadband connection?

Answer»

I want to share a broadband connection (wirelessly) and without  INSTALLING an ethernet PCI card (my computer has 'low profile' PCI  slots).
Is this all I need?

Broadband connection adn ADSL modem (already installed)
WIRELESS hub
wirless ethernet card (USB adaptor type)

also, I read that some USB modems can't support hubs,
mine has 2 ports, one from the line to the modem, and one from the modem to the USB port. Will it be able to support the hardware? What type of USB ports does your Compaq have? 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0 (Hispeed)?

Is the ADSL modem wireless as well?
Hi,
Sorry for the late reply, I have a USB adsl modem, (not wireless) my computer is a dell optiplex gx150 and I think I have 1.1 (sometimes I get messages in windows saying 'this device can perform faster' when plug in some things in the USB port) Quote

Your computer has an onboard NIC:  #5
and 2-USB1.1 connectors:  #11

so I dont need to install an ethernet card?

Solve : USB vs Parallel connection?

When I install and hook up a printer is the USB connection faster or slower than a PARALLEL connection? Quote

When I install and hook up a printer is the USB connection faster or slower than a Parallel connection?

Both are faster than the printer can print.
I am concerned about the delay time between PRESSING the print button to when the printer starts printing.  I am hooking up a LASER printer. The delay time is controlled by the printer. It requires x time to WARM up properly and will not print until it is ready.Make sure your print spooler is set to automatic in

Reset BIOS.ah! how do i reset the bios??

but there seems to be power in the pc, but the thing doesnt boot up(not just windows, but the "dos " screen eitherah! how do i reset the bios??

but there seems to be power in the pc, but the thing doesnt boot up(not just windows, but the "dos " screen eitherhow to reset the bios??How to enter the BIOS/CMOS setup

or

To reset the BIOS, take the following steps:

1. Power down computer
2. Take measures against electro-static discharge
3. Remove computer casing
4. Inspect mainboard for a CMOS jump switch or CMOS battery (Most systems have either)

In CASE of CMOS jump switch being present :

Follow instructions provided with the mainboard manual.

In case of CMOS battery present :

I. Remove CMOS battery for approximately 10-15 seconds.
II. After 10-15 seconds, place the CMOS battery back.

5. Power on system.

Do not power on the system when the CMOS jumper is set to clear_cmos or when  the CMOS battery is not present. here is another symptom that i have noticed.
the firsr "beep", that switches on the screen occurs at different lenghts of time, sometimes 2-3 secs, sometimes 10-15 secs, is that a clue to some thing??
thanks
tonySee this article. ::)thanks for all the info.

looks like i have a lot of things to check out !!You need to know:

  • Beep code
  • BIOS name
it says amibios at the initial boot screen, and when it doesnt light up the screen, there are no beeps at all.
usually one beep LIGHTS the screen, and then another one just before win xp starts.
if the onboard graphics was a bit dodgy would that cause my problems ? Quote
