Solve : Hibernation on Boot Up?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I am having problems with starting my PC.  As soon as the desktop comes up, my computer goes into hibernation mode.  It will start again when I MOVE the mouse but goes right back into hibernation.  On the rare instance when it does start, my anti-virus software won't work, the computer won't recognize my printer anymore, just all sorts of problems.  I totally reformatted my hard drive and restored the original programs and the same thing happens.  I've also RESET my BIOS with no results.   SINCE my PC is about 4 years old I was thinking the hard drive MAY be worn out?  I did run a scan and there are no bad sectors.  I am totally at a loss.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Thanks! Can you enter safe mode?

Solve : Windows XP with SP1 not recognizing 250gb HDD spac?

Answer»

I've recently purchased a 250gb HDD, USB connection.
When I try to transfer files to it, only 4gb is being recognized, the rest is "unallocated".
I have tried locating updates or upgrades for my BIOS (Aopen MX4LS), but haven't found any. My chipset is up to date.
It doesn't seem to be recognized by my BIOS, but in Windows, it shows the full volume.
What can I do, so that I can use it ?

What file system is used?

If this concerns a SLAVE drive and not a clean Windows XP install, you will have to reformat the HDD first by using Windows disk management. My other 2 - 40gb drives are using NTFS.
When I checked in Disk Management - it SHOWED the new HDD as FAT, 4gb as being Healthy & the rest of the drive was 'unallocated'.
I THOUGHT, that by pluggin' in the HDD, (it AUTOMATICALLY was set-up by Windows) - that it should be useable.
Could my system not be capable of handling more than 2 drives, 1 CD ROM & 1 CD Writer ?? Quote

I thought, that by pluggin' in the HDD, (it automatically was set-up by Windows) - that it should be useable.

You have to allocate space first and then reformat it.

All new Hard Disk Drives need to be reformatted before use.

Solve : Bios Death?

Answer»

I flashed my award bios with a beta VERSION (Asus motherboard) and immediately went dead. I cant EVEN power up now.

Is my bios chip fried?Did the flash process fail? The flash process said it was SUCESSFUL. It did warn me that it wasnt the right bios, but since it was a beta version and it is an older second computer I went for it anyway.

What do you think? It hung immediately and now wont power up (1/2 second power up, then dead). My Asus mobo book says that if your bios is dead it then checks A:
Try booting it with a floppy that contains the original or latest bios file for your mobo.
My book goes on to say, make sure the file is renamed as P4P800.ROM (In my case)

Maybe read the book a little. Quote

You downloaded a beta version for the wrong CMOS chip? The latest versions for many Asus motherboards are Beta.  If they work, Asus doesn't seem to bother to change the name.  I have 2 DIFFERENT Asus motherboards and both Award BIOS say: Beta.did you save the old bios to floppy.....before you flash the bios .if not.....you may need a NEW mobo...... Solve : BIOS beep conundrum?

Hello everyone, first off, i'm using a:

P4 530 3.0 ghz HT,

1 gb centon 533mhz ddr2 ram,

geforce 6600gt pci-e card,

asus p5gd2 premium mobo,

The problem is, when I start up the computer everything loads fine, fans, LEDS, but no monitor.  Here's the confusing part.  When the KEYBOARD is not plugged in, I get 4 short beeps, with the keyboard, I get 3 short beeps.  I have tested several times to make sure I COUNTED correctly.  I have also attempted switching around the ram and taking out one or the other, but still 3 beeps, or 4 beeps with no keyboard.  I also tried taking out the video card, but still, 3 beeps.  I have no idea what's going on and appreciate the help, thanks. What BIOS is installed?

Do you recognize any of the beeps Computer POST / Beep codes? If yes, copy the MEANING here.

You should reseat the videocard or test it in another slot. It may be faulty or improperly seated.

Solve : Installing PC Memory?

Answer»

I have HP Pavilion 6730 computer with standard memory of 64MB and Hard drive of 10GB.  I installed Windows XP and My mouse was freezing. XP recommends 128MB.

I installed 128MB SDRAM in second slot to increase memory to 192 MB but system is detecting 64MB memory only.  I installed XP again but the new memory is not there.

Do I have to remove 64MB memory and install new card KByte 128MB SDRAM (PC100/133  168Pin ) to increse memory to 128MB?  System can have maximum memory of 256MB.hsawhney.....I would try removing the 64mb stick and REPLACE it with the 128mb stick and see if 128 mg stick is seen .........if it is then install the 64mb stick in the second slot.

The bigger module usually goes in the 1st slot.

You would be better off putting 2 x 128 MB as it will still be on the low side for XP.I am not convince that the new memory is compatible. Some of those machines are very pickey. Did you just get it off the rack or check a web site like Crucial to guarantee a match? How much RAM is seen by the BIOS?

Check for loose hardware components next.

You can test the RAM later on.Thanks, the 6800 card is a power hog, so the heat issue sounds very logical.

Solve : need help please...?

Answer»

I'm going to explain this from start to finish so that anyone who replies (thank you for your time and support) will be able to MAYBE better trouble shoot the problem.

I built my 1st PC, all parts are brand new, DFI Lan party Nforce4 Ultra D mobo, athlon xp 64 3000 venice core, saphire ati radeon x300se pci express vid card, hynix dual channel memory (2 x 256mb ram pc 3200), 80gb hd.

What I did and was told was wrong was I put in the 80gb hd into my current pc (the one I'm using at this very moment) and loaded win xp corp sp2 onto, the installation went great, I was able to boot up on the new hd and use win xp corp sp2, I removed the hd and installed it into my new pc after I was done putting the pc together, I learned from others on here that was my first mistake.

So, I tried installing win xp corp sp2 all over again once the new pc was together, well it got to the blue screen that says in the top left hand corner 'windows setup', then it scans and installs the drivers, and all that other stuff....2 things happen after it finishes that part, either I get a blue screen with an error that says 'Bad_pool_header' and something about checking hardware ect, or it'll just come up with blank blue screen...

So I used a win 98 boot disk, and formatted the drive, nothing is on the drive cause it's formatted, so then I CREATED a new dos partition, ect, that goes well and then I try and installing win xp corp sp2 again, same thing happens.

When I go into CMOS or system set up, the HD is detected, it says it's the master drive, has the volume number and the size (80gb), my memory is ALSO displayed and it says 524288 Kb of memory...so basically I feel I'm screwed and have no idea on what to do, I mean I just don't understand why win xp corp sp2 installed perfectly in my current pc but in this new system it's not going well at all. I'm pretty sure all the hardware is connected properly, I can't even run Linux Knopix and that's suppose to boot RIGHT from the CD rom drive.

I'm not sure if this would have any affect on anything, but I'm putting a pic of what the mobo looks like, you'll notice that the memory slots go yellow, orange, yellow, orange, well I have my 2 sticks of 256mb ram on the top 2 (yellow, and orange)....memory is detected so I don't think that is the problem.

Now the quick installation guide I got with the mobo said to put the PCI express in PCI express 1 slot, well I put it in PCI express 2 slot because the the PCI express slot was close to the Nforce 4 fan, I just didn't want it to be too cluttered so I decided to put it there instead...there's display on my monitor (mobo starting up, accessing CMOS, ect...so I'd assume that where the vid card is placed isn't affecting it, cause if the video card was in the wrong place wouldn't I just see a blank/black screen?

At this point I'm just frustrated, I was so excited to do my 1st build and about the parts I got, and now I'm just really bummed out cause I don't know what to do, I almost feel like I wasted my money, I just need some advice/help...I even tried installing the Utility CD that came with the mobo but that doesn't seem to boot, I dunno, hopefully some of you's that know lots can help.1. Discard Windows 98 boot diskette
2. Set CD-ROM as the first boot device
3. Insert Windows XP CD-ROM
4. Repartition and reformat. Quote

The motherboard's memory slots have been color coded for easy dual-channel configuration. To run your memory in dual-channel mode you have to put the modules into slots of the same color.

If you enter - DFI Lan party Nforce4 Ultra D mobo - in the Google search you'll find a lot more info.

Re-read the MoBo manual.
Put the PIC card in the suggested slot too.I would put 2 x 1024 MB of RAM in there, if you have the money, btw.

Solve : My cdrom drive?

Answer»

I have bought this computer a couple months ago and have been enjoying it with zero problems. About a half hour ago I felt like reinstalling a game of mine so I pushed the eject button on my pc tower and the tray OPENED about half way and then closed again...

Ever since then the drive icon, and the drivers and every trace of it ever have been there. I found a tweak on the net and used that and what not and got it all to come back... it SAYS the exact name of the device and shows the icon now... but it wont open.. and nor will it read the cd that's in there.

So I decided to REFORMAT hoping that it would change it back... it didnt.. now the lights dont go on for that drive either... it shows its icon in "My computer" and in the device manager it still shows its CORRECT name.. but I click on the icon and it says "Please insert disk.. ETC"

I unplugged the IDE cable, the power cable and replugged them in... and everything and still nothing.

Am I going to have to get a new one?Test the CD-ROM drive on another computer.

You need to recall the exact error message so that we can determine if it was legitimate.

You may be able to do the following:

1. Right click on My Computer
2. Properties
3. Hardware  tab
4. Device Manager
5. Expand DVD-/cd-rom-stations
6. Right click on your CD-ROM reader, select remove

Restart your system and allow for redetection.sorry, should have been a little clearer, the message about registry values popped up after the virus had been removed( it was removed with TRENDmicro software), whilst i was trying to repair NORTON. Solve : Lazy computer...?

Answer»

Here's what my computer is doing... maybe somebody can help me out.

I TURN on my computer... in the middle of boot-up, the MONITOR shuts down and goes into permanent stand-by mod.

It does this at the load-up screen that has the WINDOWS XP logo on the black background with the sliding blue PROGRESS indicator at the bottom of the screen.  Once this screen pops up, almost instantly the monitor shuts down.

I swapped out monitors, cables, and video cards... and to no avail.

When the computer is loading, the hard-drive light flickers.  However, once the monitor shuts down, the hard-drive light stays lit.

This would make me think that because of the hard-drive light staying lit once the monitor shuts down, it might be a problem with the hard-drive.  But, I am far from being an expert on computers.

HELP!!!  (and thank you)Will it start in safe mode?I try starting it in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, and Safe Mode with command prompt... again, monitor shuts down. Another note on this... It was working fine earlier today.  I turned the monitor off after working on it this morning.  I turned the monitor this evening, and it appeared to be in standby mode.  Moved the mouse, didn't turn on.  So I reboot the computer, and it's been doing this ever since.I suppose you have tried pushing the monitor button after the computer has booted into it's 'dead state'?Yes.  I hit the monitor button, and it totally turns off.  I push it again, and the monitor powers up, but in it's "walking dead" state. See if it will boot to the xp disk. What are your hardware SPECIFICATIONS?

Solve : haunted computer, I think it's RAM??

Answer»

Hello,

On a system that I'm working on, I'm trying to get Windows 2000 reinstalled and functioning properly.

It kept doing odd things like saying that it couldn't find certain files when in the middle of installing service pack 4 (like MSI.DL_), but not always the same file.  (So far, I've tried re-installing several times).

I then decided to try downloading the SP4 file onto my hard DRIVE, and comparing it with the one that I have on CD using the FC command.  Differences were found.

I suspected RAM, so I SWAPPED the 256 meg chip out of the computer with a 64 meg chip that I had lying around.  After downloading the SP4 file onto my hard drive again, I ran FC again.  This time, no differences were found.

Realizing that 64RAM would not be ENOUGH for this system, I found a 128 chip that I had around, and I tried the same test again.  Differences were found.

The system is a Pentium III 750mhz with a motherboard that I'm still in the middle of trying to identify (it has an Award BIOS).

What would be the next step in troubleshooting this?

Thanks, QUOTE

Yes connect it to another computer like you would a CD drive and in my computer it will appear in place of the CD you can open it and recover all data, disconnect the CD rive Cable and attach it to your hard drive that you wish to recover data from.
Don:

There is one way you may not be able to save the files: If you encrypted them (or used the Windows XP option to make them "PRIVATE").  You will then be able to copy or move the files but you won't be able to view them.

DocIs there anyway to view/recover the files by maybe using ms-dos?  I found info for doing so for windows 98 but not for windows xp.  It should WORK. Give it a try and see.

Solve : have no idea what wrong with my computer?

my cpu come on but monitor, keyboard, mouse and other external unit does not come on or WORK. does anyone now what my problem is?
Tade:

When you say CPU do you mean the power indicator light is lit, or do you mean you can hear the interior fan(s) and hard DRIVE(s) SPINNING?

DocSince you are *somehow* PERSON #1.000.000 to call a PC a CPU I'll assume you mean PC.

Solve : computer is buzzing, but not doing anything?

Answer»

My computer starts up and when XP is ready for me to log in, it starts buzzing. It sounds like it is coming from the processor. It acts like something is using up all its resources. Any hints? kennerphil..... Are you able to log in ?
Are you certain the "buzzing" is comming from the CPU ....or could it be from the fan or possibly the hard drive ?

dl65  I was able to login, but not anymore. I click on the user name I want, but it does nothing.

the buzzing is more like a continuous beep. I don't think it is coming from the fan, but maybe the hard drive
kernner:

The audible tone you hear may be the motherboard's BIOS beep codes.  Beep codes are a way the motherboard communicates what is wrong (it's something like Morse code, but not as sophisticated).

If it is a continuous series of beeps that does NOT end, then try this:

* If your computer has an Award BIOS or a Phoenix FirstBIOS, the continuous audible tone indicates a memory failure.  To fix the problem, remove all memory (RAM) sticks except the one in the first bank (the one labeled bank one on the motherboard).  If the beep tone goes away, then one of the RAM sticks you removed is bad or was not seated firmly.  Add one RAM stick at a time till you get the beep tone again.  That stick may be bad.

* If your computer is an IBM, the continuous beep tone means the power supply or the motherboard is bad.  Have a computer repair shop replace the power supply for you.  If that doesn't WORK, have the shop replace the motherboard.

If the audible tone stops after SEVERAL beeps, then your system may have a Phoenix BIOS 6.x or later.  In this case, count the number of beeps and pauses between the beeps.  Write them down and let us know the number of beeps between each pause.  We will let you know what the cause is.

Doc
Take the case door off and inspect all hardware.

Thanks for hte responses.

The beep is one long contiuous beep, not a series or anything like that. I will CHECK to be sure nothing is loose inside, then the memory sticks.

Thanks againNothing appears to be loose. Only one memoey stick.

Sounds like either the motherboard or power supply.

Not that I know much about this, but it seems wierd that it starts and gets to the point to where I am ready to ogin into Windows XP HE, then it starts beepng. The curser moves but nothing happens when I click the mouse.

I was able to get in before, but it seems to be worse now.

GUESS I'll have to bring it in.Can you start in safe mode?

WAIT A MINUTE!  You will not hear a beep code after you get to the Windows XP logo, only before.  (Sorry that i did not catch this earlier.)

Once the BIOS gives control of the system to the operating system there will be no beep code.  Do you actually see the Windows XP logon dialog box or the Windows XP welcome screen?

If you get to Windows before the sound, then it is not a beep code.  It may be the hard drive is grinding.  Does it sound like an electronic beep made by the speaker inside the case, or does it sound like something else?

DocAnyone want to bet it's the hard drive?

Solve : Cannot turn on PC?

Answer»

I'm not a computer expert. That's why I need all help from you guys. My desktop couldn't be turned on. It has 3 different things to be noted.
1. Sometimes, the desktop can not be turned on. If I push the power button, nothing happens. No sound no lights.

2. Sometimes, the desktop works properly. It can be turned on and off any time.

3. During the time when desktop can't be turned on, it occassionally makes beep sounds like it's starting and then sounds die and it will repeat making beep sound again and again. At this moment if I push the power button, it will be turned on normally. Once it's turned on, it works properly without any problems.

However, my computer cannot be turned on for 2 days already. Any suggestions? I don't think I can fix it by myself. I live in manhattan. Is there any place that can fix PC desktop at reasonable price?
Please help me.You may have damaged something by not immediatly having it taken in for repairs.

Do any of the hardware installed show signs of BURNS or do you smell anything BURNED?I don't see any visible signs of burning nor smell. I don't know if this will have anything to do with it, but the latest upgrade I did is installing DVD burner. However, the burner looks fine and work pretty well when I can turn on the computer.1. Do you recall how the beeping has started?
2. Are the system fans operating properly?
3. Is there EXCESSIVE dust build-up?

Try reconnecting all hardware and cables.
Review this article and tell me if the beep you hear appears in the list. Be certain to look under the correct BIOS listing.the beep sound is only one beep like computer starting normally. When it has problem, the computer will start itself. There's sound of fan working and one beep sound after that every things will be stop like the computer turn off. And then the fan will start again with one beep sound, then they will go off again. It will repeat like this until I push the power button. After that, everything will work fine. So I don't think it has anything to do with the bios or I'm not sure.Tony:

Sounds like it might be a power supply problem.   Have a computer store replace it to see if that fixes the problem.  Before you do this, however, check that the computer power cord is firmly plugged into the electrical outlet and is firmly plugged into the back of the computer.

Solve : Minute electric shock while touching Monitor?

Answer»

Hi is there anybody out there who can let me know how to prevent the monitor from giving minute electroc shock ? can anyone tell me the reason behind this and how to prevent it ? it happens when i touch the monitor screen!!!!Well man I think it is normal. It is due to earth. Secondly there is no need to touch the screen of the monitor. You can also USE screen filter to prevent this.thanks !!! i will try to get monitor filter (screen filter) and i want to know does it affect the performance of my pc or monitor It is the static CHARGE that builds up across the face of the monitor and is due to the high voltage applied to phosphors to make them glow. The static charge itself is not dangerous but voltages inside the monitor are extremely so. All monitors and TV sets that use a CRT do this. The only way to prevent it is to not use it. If you need to clean the monitor, TURN it off and wait for at least 30 minutes for the charge to dissipate. Otherwise, You will just have to endure the small shock.I really don't know if this will help but when you turn on the monitor you should hear a noise as the de-Gaussing cuts in.

If you are in the habit of leaving the monitor on for long periods of time try using the de-Gausser and see if that helps.

I would be interested to know.

Last time I can across de-Gaussing big-time it was on a SHIP and was used as an anti-mine measure.

We stripped out the cabling and sold it for the copper content when the price of copper soared.I don't think deguassing would do much in this situation. Without getting technical, certain components build up magnetism and cause the color guns to not be true. This can cause blurred or shadowy images and other anomolies. Degaussing removes the RESIDUAL magnetism that builds up over a period of time and keeps the color guns tracking properly. It will have little or no effect on the static charge that is present at the front of screen.wear rubber shoes/and dont have sweaty hands.........how is this monitor? my one does not do ,what your ones does.?

Solve : Duel Video Cards?

Answer»

I recently baught a gforce4000 card for my computer to play 3d games. Im not a huge gamer, so I didnt want to spend the money on a high end card, this one works great. Now on to my question, I decided to HOOK my cable tv to my computer so I can watch and RECORD tv shows to my hard drive. I bought a Hauppauge WinTV GO-Plus videcard for my tv tuner. So can I use my Gforce card for gaming and my TV tuner for recording/watching shows? is 2 video CARDS possible? One AGP and one PCI, will this be a problem? is it very difficult to implement? Sorry for the cunfusing writing.. its late and Im tired.

any help would be greatly appreciated.Does the motherboard support DUAL video cards? You should  be able to. I doubt that the TV tuner card is RECOGNIZED as a videocard.  Perhaps it can not even function as a videocard. (No VGA or DVI-I connector? No videocard.)

Solve : computer will not turn on...?

I have a dell dimension 4500 with a Pentium 4 , 1.80 GHz Processor and I wanted to upgrade.
I went to my local computer store and I bought a Pentium 4 , 3.00 GHz (Btw I showed them my computer and they said that the Processor would be compatible)
So I go home and install the processor in my computer(I was wearing a ESD wrist STRAP) I turn my computer on and it didn't turn on, so I take it thinking I just bought a bad part and I put my old processor back in and It still won't turn on!!
The light comes on the power button and on the mother board, NO fans come on ,NO beeps, NO nothing.
BTW I've tried two different power supplies.
Did you seat the heatsink properly and put compound between the cpu Heatsink. Could be the fan did you make sure you connected everything back.Sagura:

Try resetting the BIOS to the defaults.  Check the motherboard manual to see if 3.00 GHz processor is compatible.  Check that all data cables and connections to the power supply are firm and not reversed.

Try resetting the BIOS to the defaults.

To reset the BIOS, take the following steps:

1. Power down computer
2. Take COUNTERMEASURES against electro-static discharge
3. Remove computer casing
4. Inspect MAINBOARD for a CMOS jump switch or CMOS battery

In case of CMOS jump switch:

Follow instructions provided with the mainboard manual.

In case of CMOS battery:

I. Remove CMOS battery for approximately 10-15 seconds.
II. After 10-15 seconds, PLACE the CMOS battery back.

5. Power on system.

Do not power on the system when CMOS jumper is set to clear_cmos or when CMOS battery is non-present.

Solve : Friend has trouble with new games graphics??

Answer»

So, my friend RECENTLY bought ArmA: Armed Assault for the PC to play it with me. However, upon playing it he gets this extremely weird problem, and I honestly don't know how to fix it.

So, his SCREEN looks like this when he starts it up:

He has the latest drivers. His PC specs are:

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (build 7600), 64-bit
ATI Radeon HD 4550

Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5400 2.70GHz 2.70GHz

Installed Memory RAM : 4.00 GB

We're honestly unsure of the problem.
What are the required specs for the game??

    Minimum specification:

CPU: 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
    RAM: 512 MB
Graphics card: NVIDIA Geforce FX series or ATI Radeon 9500 series or higher (Pixel Shader 2.0)
HD space: 3 GB (or more as needed for downloadable addons)
Operating system: Windows XP or Windows 2000

    Recommended specification:

CPU: 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
    RAM: 1 GB
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce 6800 series or ATI Radeon X800 series or higher
HD space: 4 GB (or more as needed for downloadable addons)
    Operating system: Windows XP

--------------------

What we're finding weird is that I have:

Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1, 64bit
AMD Athlon II x2 240 Processor 2.80 Ghz
3.00 Gig Ram
ATI Radeon HD 4200

And I don't have a problem?

No beeps at boot,
I tried running only 1 module at a time swapping all 4 modules into the primary slot with no joy,
2 different 'known good' monitors,
removed motherboard battery to reset BIOS,
Is there a way to check for faulty graphics card without having an external PCI Express 2.0 ×16 graphics card to try (which I don't have)?
What else can/should I check first?
Thanks as always,
Mike
If the video was bad and everything else swords, the BIOS would make beeps. Well, that is what is expected.
Was it working fine a few days ago? Did it ever beep?

Quote

What does that mean?

You can also try to remove all devices from the system, even the keyboard. This means removing the poser and data to both hard drive and DVD drive. Remove all USB things.

The objective is to either get a beep of a BIOS logo on the display. Try just one stick of RAM. Swap RAM.

Try power off/on cycle several times.

You need to check the +3.3 , +5 and +12 volts on the motherboard.

It worked until when it would not show the display at start-up. No beeps so far.

I mean swapping each stick of RAM into the 1st RAM slot closest to the processor. In my experience with different motherboards, that's the slot the manual says to use if only using 1 stick.

Where do I connect my DVOM meter leads? I can't find this info on the Gateway support site. I can never find very much usefull info on the Gateway support site. I can't even get the user guide to open with Adobe Reader

UPDATE: I tried starting it with nothing connected (USB mouse and keyboard, SATA hard drive and optical drive, PCI-E cards ect.).
I also swapped all 4 memory sticks into slot furthest from processor one at a time.
Still the same result = no beeps, no display.
At this point it is time to try another power supply Unit. (PSU)

GOOGLE power supply pinouts
OR look here:
Google search for PSU pinouts
Here is a general coverage of how to test a PSU. But if you find it too much, do not bother. It is more likely you motherboard has a problem.  You can just beg nor borrow a PSU and see if that makes a DIFFERENCE.
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/f/powersupplytest.htm
Let's hope it is not the motherboard.Okay, I've checked the PSU with my DVOM and all voltages are correct.
Next? One more thing. Plug in the keyboard. Turn on the power and watch the keyboard lights.

At power on, all lights flash once together.
At some point all lights will be off.
Then at last the Numlock should come on.

This is the clue that says the CPU is running and the BIOS found at least a small amount of usable memory.
But if nit does not, your CPU either is not starting or there is no RAM available.

To test the CPU, you put it into a known good mobo. That may no be easy. This is the limit of my experience. I gave up on repairing mobos years ago.

I do believe a newer CPU  have better warranties than its motherboard.  So it would make not sense to buy a new CPU.
The price of a good motherboard is a bit more that a CPU, but it varies.

What I fear is that you need a new motherboard. But wait for another opinion. I am often wrong.

I'm going to return it now. OK. Not the video chip.
Don't give up. There are junk dealers out there that collect Gateway parts and recycle them. You want a real Gateway motherboard to preserve your investment in the CPU and the Windows 7 system. On a Gateway, use of another motherboard will make your Windows n7 not legal. (Not real sure of that.)
Even Amazon has some junk  recycle vendors

Socket AM2+ is a CPU socket, which is the immediate successor to Socket AM2 that is used by several AMD processors such as Athlon 64 X2. Socket AM2+ is a mid-migration from Socket AM2 to Socket AM3 and both AM2+ and AM2 socket CPUs and motherboards have the potential to operate together. Actual interoperability depends upon other factors, especially the availability of compatible BIOS software, and some PC retailers, such as Dell, have not provided compatible BIOS versions that allow use of socket AM2+ CPUs on their products utilizing socket AM2 motherboards, such as the Inspiron 53
So Wikipedia says don't blame AMD.

As far as Malware goes, after doing some researching, this dialog appears to be legit. It appears when the S.M.A.R.T (Smart Monitoring and Analysis Tool) built into the drive DETECTS an error that points to the drive beginning to fail.

If you just want to check the S.M.A.R.T status of the drive download Speedfan http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
The download link is the blue writing in the second paragraph "The latest version is SpeedFan 4.46."

Start Speedfan and go to the S.M.A.R.T tab, then select your HDD from the drop down list. Click "Perform an in-depth online analysis of this hard disk"
You will be taken to a page which will tell you if your hard drive really is sick or not.

Post back with any warning messages it gives you.

Solve : Help! Computer Won't Boot!?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite a205 s4707. It came with Windows Vista Home Premium, and has been running okay for about 3 years. The computer keeps crashing after, and these random colored patterns, sometimes in horizontal stripes, weird patterns appear, ranging in a lot of different colors. (I also got a couple of BSODs) What I was doing with the computer doesn't REALLY seem to matter. Emulators, Word documents, videos, music, the colored stripes would appear, and I would have to reboot Windows. After a while, the system completley won't boot, and I had to get a Vista recovery disk and repair Windows. It worked fine for a couple of hours, but then, it wouldn't boot again, and I had to use the recovery disk a few more times. (The PC was also very slow, HARD Drive only had about 30GB out of 120GB) The colored stripes would still come out, so I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and installed it. The first 2 attempts failed, halfway through the install, the colored stripes would come out. Third time lucky, I completley installed Ubuntu and was able to make a User, download some pictures, check for updates, watch a video on Youtube, and play a browser game. I closed the lid to make it go into sleep mode, but then the computer won't boot. After a few tries, and messing around in the Recovery Mode, I was able to get Ubuntu to the login page. After using it for a few minutes at most each time, the colored stripes would appear again. This morning I tried again, and Ubuntu won't boot at all and it keeps crashing (colored stripes) and the Recovery Mode is also effected. The only thing I did that was close to working was to do a memory check and I was able to get Ubuntu up for a minute before the colored stripes. From reading other ARTICLES and forums, I believe that the Graphics Card is probably broken. ( I NEVER cleaned out the fan or anything, so dust might also be a problem.) Can you please tell me the problem? And if so how to fix it?

Thank you for a very detailed post. You have done the things that you need to do.
You have used tow completely different OS, Vista and Ubuntu, and still had random problems.

Can you run the laptop without the battery in place? (A few laptops don't allow this, but I think Toshiba is OK.) A bad battery, in a few cases, gives the symptoms you mention.

Have you tried removing all USB devices?
Can you get into the BIOS and check to see if time and date are correct. Bad time and date would mean the CMOS settings have been lost. Bad CMOS  power cell.

You may have a bad video chip. But there is no easy way to prove that. Can you get into the BIOS?
If you can get into the BIOS and the display is stable, it might mean there is something else other than the video chip at fault.

Shpt in the dark. Have you ever done a firmware update on this laptop? There is no need to multiple post vitamink.3 duplicate posts deletedSorry guys about the mulit posts, I was kinda scared that no one would see my posts. I can run the PC without the battery(with the power cord in), and I don't have any USB devices. I'm not that good with computers (only 13 lol) and I checked the date. Funny thing is that today is the 15TH, and it shows its the 16th. I dont really know about firmware updates, but getting different advice from people.
Some say its faulty RAM
Others say it could be the dust (never cleaned it, been about 4 years now )
Also say that it could be the video card

I really dont know what to make of it. Took it to GeekSquad, and before even checking it out, they offered the $70 checkup thing.
The poor guy at Staples didnt even know what Linux was. Thanks for replies and please help! One detail missing. Can you run it in the Linux 'Live" mode.  That is when you do NOT install it to the herd drive. Just run it in RAM. Ubuntu does it and so do many other distros. This way you can see if the problem goes away when you  do NOT use the hard drive. Simple way to see if it is the hard drive or something else.

Solve : Need Help, Building a Computer but...?

Answer»

Hello I am completely new when it comes to computers, I have only own one computer in my life, and its an alienware m15x laptop ( i love it).  Lately ive been thinking and i should get a desktop later in the future. SO after hitting up craigslist and looking on other websites, ive decided to just build my own, so i can get a deeper UNDERSTANDING of how a computer works. My brother directed me to new egg, and the DIY section. Now i understand that a good graphics card isnt the only thing you need. Now i was looking at a DIY combo and I looked at the mother board, which is this (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3412#sp), now my questions are posted with my analysis, then the question:
1. Ok the MOTHERBOARD says it can support AM3 Processors, like AMD Phenom™ II processor/ AMD Athlon™ II processor. But the AMD 880G chipset says it compatible with AMD Athlon™, AMD Athlon™ II, AMD Phenom™, AMD Phenom™ II processors. Is that the same thing? and is it dual core or quad core that it can have? and how do i find what speeds are available.
2. On a related note, the DIY combo comes with this CPU (AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor FD4100WMGUSBX), now its AMD but not Phenom or Athlon, but it is AM3. Is AM3 what determines if i can put it in the motherboard?

Now the i dont know if the questions are understandable, but I am really interested in successfully understanding the build of the computer.  One those questions are answered I may ask more. And I am extremely grateful to those who take the time to help me. In my opinion the best advice one can give you at this stage is =as precisely as you can after thoughtful consideration define what your current needs from the computer are.In other words what do you want to use it for? Also give some consideration as to what you may want to be able to do with it in the next 2 or so years. I know those questions at this point given your newness to the technology may be difficult but take some time and be honest with yourself.Once you have done that then come back and define your desires in a computer and you will get advice that addresses those desires.truenorth Quote from: truenorth on June 15, 2012, 06:21:51 PM

Well really, I would like a computer I can use for gaming for the next 2 years, while i save money for parts and considering the fact that I would like to upgrade the computer when I feel the need. This originally set in when I learned from Alienware that my M15x cannot receive any more GPU upgrades. I dont want a high end computer with all the goodies. I have already found the GPU I want and for a good price, but lets keep in mind i plan on buying a DIY combo, this being that I would like to learn more about the parts needed to make a computer operate. So my previous questions are from what the combo i have decided to look at has included (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.966163). My desire is to simply learn.... whats parts go TOGETHER, and why? I have no problem doing my research in fact i have been researching for a week now, but I have no one to guide me, so Ive decided to use this forum. Is that clear?Hi urban3rd
I sympathize with you because I have also tried to get a deeper understanding of how computers work by assembling my own computer.
My first and only try has been with an Intel based system and though I feel I've learned a lot, my hunger for knowledge has not been satisfied and I'm currently working on assembling my second Intel based system.

Would you mind letting us know why have you chosen an AMD based system for your first build? Quote from: urban3rd on June 15, 2012, 06:11:21 PM

The motherboards from large brands (ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock, MSI, etc) will have a CPU support list posted on the page. For your board it is on the right hand side as a grey button which takes you here:
http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=3412
Obviously, your CPU in your kit is not officially supported on this board. Shame on Newegg, Reading through the feedback TAB shows many people unable to boot with this board because they needed to update the BIOS before it would recognize the processor, which means if you don't have an older AM3 CPU to get the board to POST, you will be unable to do anything with it.

This combo kit will be better anyhow http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.956692
This is the new generation of AMD APU's which have GPU's built into the CPU die. This means even without a discrete graphics card, you still get low/midrange graphics performance out of it, and if you get a Radeon card somewhere in the future, you are able to X-fire the onboard GPU with your new card to get even better graphics performance out of it.

Also the CPU supplied with this kit is on the supported list

EDIT: In fact that appears to be a very impressive board. I'll always prefer ASUS but that is just my preference

Solve : Cleaning cabinet insides?

Answer»

Hi all, (new here)

RECENTLY there has been some construction work going on at my place and obviously my cabinet has caught quite the cement-y dust it shouldn't have. Although I do know that I should use compressed air cans and avoid static charges. What I would like to reassure and know more is if I need to take some extra care with the genre of dust that there is.

Also, I do not have compressed air cans at the moment and was wondering if I could use my girlfriend's hairdryer instead since it has a "cool air" option in it. If not, I'd appreciate it more if it can be explained again as to why can't I use cold air blows from a dryer.

Thank youhttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/cleaning-the-inside-of-your-pc/With all due respect . I think I mentioned I know about the cleaning process. Question was extended.Use whatever you like, it's your computer. Personally, I'd use something made for the job - but it's your call. Just be careful and follow as much of the instructions in the link posted above as possible.Given the nature of the pollutant (concrete dust) my primary concern would be that as you are probably aware;when the canned air is expended for more than a very brief period it will cause moisture to arise on the surface. Moisture +cement dust =concrete. So either use the canned air very briefly or use the vacuum mini attachments in the link (i use that often-but have never used them blowing only sucking). Also as part of your process try to prevent blowing on any fans to cause excessive speed on fan rotation.truenorthThe main reason vaccuums and hair dryers aren't recommended is 'cause of the huge amounts of static they generate...

Also Endust makes an electronic component cleaner that would put a slick micro surface on the interior that would inhibit it clinging to the surface...
I RECOMMEND a complete tear down however if you are going to use it.Or...there's this::

The main reason vaccuums ........ if you are going to use it.

Guess I wasn't as clear in my wording but that is precisely what I wished to know. That particular cabinet out of the two I have is something I wouldn't ever wanna take any chances with. With 'truenorth' and you around I think I can particularly be a bit more crazy with my questions I guess (lol, crazy questions ahead; warning) and ask a bit more...cause I really don't wanna mess with that system yet want it absolutely clean.

So like I mentioned above that I was even unable to find a can and have no vacuum equipment currently at home, I went down to the market only to find a CHEAP fat nozzle air blowers available which makes the hairdryer look like a better option. Its just that the market here sucks.
I was wondering if blowing out of squeezy-squeaky plastic toys with their air outlet holes, create static as well xD (Yes I know I sound a little desperate but I think I am at the moment ) or any other home idea apart from the picture you posted
Can I possibly detach out each circuit and gently jerk it expecting the dust to fall....
I feel incredibly silly asking all of that myself but please, just help o.o

Thanks for all the help so far, as well. Quote from: patio on June 19, 2012, 06:01:10 AM

Also a vacuum cleaner can suck air through a fan so hard it may overspeed and can destroy the bearing, and suck RAM modules out of their slots, either completely or just partly, giving rise to puzzling fault symptoms.Just to add more "confusion" to the issue. In the many instances where i have used the "vacuum" method with the mini attachments i have fortunately been able to use a vacuum that has a variable orifice that can limit the degree of suction so i have not had to be concerned with the ingestion of cards or whatever, It also occurred to me (though i have never used the tool) and given your struggle to find SUITABLE devices that a small artists spray paint unit (usually available at hobby shops) might give you the air blowing ability. You could tape a straw to the nozzle end and give you more directional control. Having said all this i really am attracted to the pictorial suggestion of patio's though. I see some ancillary advantage that right now with a tremendous heat level we are experiencing here it would assist in keeping me cool. truenorthIf you clean inside a case with canned air, leave the RAM modules and any expansion cards in their slots. Dust can get blown into empty slots and cause all kinds of odd symptoms. Especially the RAM slots.

cool. Also that reminded me- what would you say about holding a wet cloth while brushing off the dirt with a natural brush that artists have (I have an old sable brush with a long wooden stick) and while I do this I stand with my feet in contact with the floor (no shoes or slippers I mean). The cloth should do what a vacuum would i.e. stick the dirt to itself so it wouldn't slip and set back on it again.
How much do you think this should help assuming compressed air can as a 99% good?
Thanks again Based totally on conjecture my OPINION re this method "How much do you think this should help assuming compressed air can as a 99% good" my estimate would be on the high side of 1% but on the low side of 3%.truenorth
P.S. If you are in a high humidity area or the monsoon season is near i would get at it whatever you decide. If this computer means as much to you as you claim, don't use a blow drier or vacuum on it. As has already been stated, the static electricity would likely damage the computer.

Your three best options are:
1. Canned, compressed air. So far you seem to have no luck with this.

2. Use an air brush compressor. (was mentioned by Truenorth)

3. Take the computer to someone who has an air compressor. Many automotive repair shops have these. Hold the nozzle quite a bit away (at least 30-50cm minimum), as they're very powerful (especially if it doesn't have a valve that let's you control the pressure).

I wouldn't recommend using any dust cleaning method that requires physical contact with the components.

Solve : Computer sometimes gets stuck at the compaq logo?

Answer»

Hi,

Hopefully the correct board to post in, my sr1630nx pc which I have upgraded to windows vista and added more memory to sometimes gets stuck at the red compaq logo startup screen.

It has just started out of the blue and when my pc loads to windows, it is fine, but when it gets stuck at the logo, it's stuck for a while and I can't do anything but restart pc and hope it gets past it.

I have reset the cmos/bios by removing the cmos battery from motherboard already.

What is wrong now?

It's almost certainly not a Windows issue since the problem occurs prior to Windows starting to load. Did this start happening RIGHT after you added the ram?No, it did not. PC had been working fine yesterday and had been for a long TIME. This morning, I booted to computer normally and noticed said problem. Did not do anything special.

I did all the ram/OS upgrades a long time ago, before sp1 was even out for vista. I do have sp2 on my pc currently. When pc gets to windows, it is fine. Otherwise it's seems to be a problem.Okay. Since I don't have a Compaq I just want to confirm that the system locks before the Windows Welcome Screen - correct?

Going on that assumption let's check both the hd and ram first.

To run checkdisk, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a DEDICATED .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the NEWLY created cd and run the utility.

Let's see where we are after those two tests.

Also, please look in DEVICE manager - are there any yellow or red symbols? I'm guessing not, but let's make sure.thanks for the help Allan, I'll be going to do your tests. I've been on CH, posting with the same exact pc and specs for the longest time and this is the first time I've ever encountered such a problem and yes, there are no yellow or red symbols in device manager.

I see on memtest there are the autoinstaller for usb key, can I use that or must I use the pre-compiled bootable ISO?Whatever is easiest for you is fine.Hi Allan,

it seems that both memtest and the chkdsk both say that everything is running fine.  I thought something might have been unseated by accident, but i did manage to get windows to load after a few re-boots which suggest everything still in place.

this is getting a bit frustrating, if only I could find out what's wrong!! I can't just be retrying the boot hoping that one boot will work.  I'm having a similar intermittent problem with one of mine.
Study this sequence;  http://www.comptechdoc.org/hardware/pc/pcboot.html
Is it getting to Step 6?  Mine will turn off & on 0-4 times prior to the POST (Step 6).  No beeps at all.
Once it gets through the POST & the single beep, all is normal.

1.  Could be your PSU (Step 1).
2.  Could be any other piece of hardware, i.e. optical drive, card reader (Step 4).

Since it doesn't do it all the time, it's really hard to find.I'm afraid I have to agree with the above post. As I said earlier, it's almost certainly a hardware problem, and the fact that it's intermittent makes it very difficult to diagnose. I would not rule out the PSU.ok thanks Allen. Right now, I am typing this message on the same computer that was encountering said issue. But it seems to be happy now that it's in windows already.

I sure don't know why it got stuck at the compaq logo now and then and it does sound like hardware might be the cue.

But intermittent issues without a way to consistently duplicate the problem makes it hard but I'll see what I can do... unless you got better ideas .... Well, one thing you can do is not shut it off at night. My personal preference is to shut down my systems daily, but I know many - MANY - knowledgeable systems folks who rarely shutdown.See if it will go to Standby.  I sometimes have the same problem coming out of Standby & it actually takes longer than a cold boot, but won't turn off when attempting to resume.  The same components (except for cpu & mobo) were working with a different motherboard, so I suspect the mobo.  May end of replacing with a compatible motherboard so I can use the CPU & RAM.

These guys have a large variety of motherboards:  http://www.serversupply.com/
You have to do a lot of homework to find the right replacement for you but the prices are very good.Ok, I took out all the stuff -- the graphics card, and the memory and whatnot, and gave my computer a complete clean out. Then I put everything back in carefully.

Seems like the problem's gone away, but I'll just monitor it a day or two just to be certain. Didn't think that would have created such problem if this was the root cause  I am glad that you actually did a complete clean out, I was gonna suggest that. I did that to my brothers while he was at work and it was working fine.problem seemed to be gone for few days straight. Now it came back this morning.

Any more ideas? I've used the CH recommended HOTCPU program and tortured my computer for 6 hrs straight and not a problem found by said program.   Also used a program to do surface scan check of hard drive and not a problem discovered either!!!

When it does get to windows, system seems stable!!!

I have XP SP2 discs.
Recently I paid 500 dollars to a PC professional to build a new PC for me.
The new hardware INCLUDES Intel CPU i5, ASUS Motherboard H61, 500HDD, 1 piece 4GB RAM (DDR2).

I want to install XP SP2 on this new PC, but I am not sure if the compatibility between XP SP2 and i5 is stable enough,
I HOPE it will not cause Blue screen of death.

Please  advise me what I shall avoid if I want to try XP SP2 out

Thank you.

KittyWinXP will run on your Intel Corei5.  If your COPY is only licensed for 1 MACHINE, you cannot install it on another.
After install, upgrade to SP3.
BTW, I think your Asus motherboard is DDR3, not DR2.
You do understand that your WinXP  is likely a 32-bit & will only recognize & support about 3GB RAM.

Maybe you should tell us more about the WinXP discs you have.  I suspect they came with a Dell, HP or Compaq, etc.

Solve : Resetting/restarting causes machine to lose power and BIOS settings?

Answer»

Heya,

I just got my computer back home from a LAN party and I've found that all of a sudden it's developed a nasty tendency to lose power (and not power on for another second) now and then when I soft or hard-reset it.  Worse, this sometimes wipes the BIOS SETTINGS too.

The motherboard is an ASUS P5Q Premium with a Core2 Duo E8500 in it and 4GB of OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 RAM.  The fact that it's doing it whilst hard resetting makes me think it's a hardware problem, but for reference I've been running FreeBSD 9 when this occurs.  I can try reproducing the problem on Windows 7 if that helps.  Power supply is a year-or-two-old Antec EarthWatts 750W.  The cooling equipment I'm currently using has been running for a few months with no prior history of OVERHEATING, and a quick eyeball of the system temperatures whilst reconfiguring the BIOS after the first attack showed them being normal (~40C for the PROCESSOR, ~30C for the case).

I think I might have had BIOS memory issues with this motherboard before, but never anything coupled with the power going off and staying off for a short while.

Thanks in advance, and apologies for initial lack of information (it's quarter to 5 am here so I'm going to have to drag myself to bed soon!)

~ MattWhen you came  home from the LAN party something got loose. Maybe the RAM STICKS. Maybe the AGP card.

Or the maybe a cooling device separated from the CPU. Or the GPU. Check to see if the heat sink is fully seated on the CPU.

And check the PSU fan. Even a 750 WATT PSU needs the fan running. Don't smirk. A friend took a computer to a shop and they could not see the PSU fan was dead.  You have to really check it. Do as Geek suggests, since you moved computer, it is possible something came loose.
Then check CMOS battery, CR-2032, available everywhere.
If battery is good, you may have the dreaded "Bad Capacitor" problem.  http://www.badcaps.net/

i have a problem. one of my CLIENT computers had gone troubled. it does not turn on or when it turns on, it automatically shuts down without warning after SOMETIME. and another one, if it does not SHUT down, the whole system would rather slow down to a crawl. it would be impossible to conclude that the computer is under attack by a computer virus because it is in a frozen state by deepfreeze. i was also able to re insert the RAM into its memory slot guessing that it would be the problem but still nothing happened. now, i TRIED CLONING it from other compatible computer, it worked but after a week or so it turns back again abnormally. can somebody please help me with this kind of problem?

THANK again for your helpTry checking your task manager for any CPU spikes or process. Process Explorer is one software that would help you locate the specific background process. Have you tried running this in safemode to check on the difference? thank you i will check those!

Solve : HDD storage?

Answer»

Hello!

I've got 20 or so 3.5" HDDs that contain long-term storage of my backups. I'm LOOKING for some kind of case to keep them all in. Any ideas?

  • I don't need to ACCESS them regularly (every few months I'll need to grab one)
  • They're already 2TB drives, so I can't consolidate the data onto fewer drives
  • I have static/dust bags for each drive

Thanks!

http://www.armysurplusworld.com/display.asp?subdepartmentID=118I love the idea.

However, I was looking for something a with some sort of organization. Kind of like when you order a bunch of HDDs and they come in that nice piece of foam with slots for each drive...Pelican foam case:  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/40634-REG/Pelican_1200_000_180_1200_Case_with_Foam.html

Cut slots in the foam to fit the drives.

Solve : Kindle not recognized by XP.?

Answer»

My wife has Vista at work and it sees it just fine. I even got a new CORD from Kindle and it didn't work. It see it in safe mode just fine. Also there are no yellow marks of any KIND in Device Manager. I rebooted the Kindle, tried DIFFERENT ports. My usb hub that I NORMALLY use for flash drives isn't POWERED, it is attached to a usb port in the rear of the computer. I have a sempron 2200+.

Solve : Hard wire not connecting only wireless?

Answer»

Hi
I am RUNNING a HP windows 7 Home Premium computer 64 bit
I have a wireless router and a hard wire LINE. The computer was running GREAT on the hard wire line and was fast.  Recently, the computer conects to the router wirelessly and , of course, it lags and is slow. I STILL have it connected to the hard wire line but it seems to be connecting wirlessly only instead.  How do I fix this?
Thank youConnecting directly on router's LAN port will disable the home network wireless for the particular computer. You can check this by going to the Network and Sharing Center or by the network ICON in the system tray.
