Solve : Windows 95 hanging at an Error upon clean install? |
|
Answer» Greetings! If able to locate 8MB RAM for it it will be better. I have run 95 on 4MB RAM but its crippled at 4MB. There was a limit to 512MB HDD but even a 1.2GB drive only with 512MB allocation should be plenty as I had 95 running on a 300MB drive and still had plenty of free space. If you get it to run on 4MB of RAM there will be excessive swapping to compensate for low RAM. Additionally hopefully this 386 is a DX and not a SX as SX's are low end and struggle with 95 while DX processors handle it far better. Sadly for 30 pin ram i have nothing else lying around. So 4mb will have to be for now. the CPU appears to be a 386-DX40 so thats at least that. I will check the HDD using another machine but to my recollection everything was fine. As for installation media. ALL original. Im using an original microsoft boot floppy and an OEM windows 95 CD with my booklet and serial ready. Strange in that the file has an error at clean install. Is the installation CD free of scratches? Maybe a scratch on the disc in the location that that file resides and so a corrupt version of it is being placed onto the HDD upon install.... Looked at google to see what the override.inf is and no helpful info to suggest its purpose. Cool that its a DX 40Mhz. One screaming 386 back in the day as most were 16Mhz to 33Mhz and it can get the memory in a single fetch vs 2 fetches that the SX required.DaveLembke, Yeah i suppose i lucked out it being a better 386 then the others haha. From what i can see the CD is NICE and clean. You did give me an idea though and that is to try a different DISK drive, perhaps this ones not the best of SHAPE. I will try a different disk drive, ensure the CD is clean and give it another go. I will report back. Thanks for the help. override.inf is in \Win95\precopy2.cab. The contents of the two cabs get copied as part of the setup bootstrap. You could confirm the contents of the cabinet file itself. It can be opened with a few utilities. Depending on where your "OEM" CD is from it's possible there have been changes to the installation media. Late reply, but i wanted to give an update. I ended up upgrading the ram to 8mb and it got PAST that error. The system took over 5 hours to install win95 only for me to realize after checking CPU-z that the Turbo button was invetered and when off, it was running at 27mhz and when on, it was running at 40mhz. Problem solved. Thank you everyone for your input. Awesome that you got it all figured out and surprised 5 hours for the install. Wonders if the CD-ROM drive is a single-speed only drive with a slow read rate or borderline to where its seeking over and over to read a section but doesnt get to the fail condition to bail out. Maybe the CD ROM was making a optical lens track adjustment noise over and over again through the install. Longest install of Windows 95 for me was like 2 hours on a Everex Step 20 Mhz 386. For yours to take 5 hours at a faster clock 386 CPU makes me wonder if the CD ROM might not be the healthiest and so it was slow to get the info built to hard drive. But anyways you got it onto the C: drive and should run ok at 8MB with some minor lag. Windows 95 really ran better on a 486 DX 33Mhz or faster with 32MB RAM. |

Solve : Windows 98 - Files run at Startup? |
|
Answer» I recently got my old computer back up and running and I removed a number of things I will no longer be needing. I used to get a message at startup that the system was unable to find a particular file (likely to do with some Internet files that I have removed as it will never again be connected), before I got around to fixing this problem the easy way a friend of mine accidentally clicked 'Yes' on the box. This means that now it is running a new file and I do not know it's exact name. This also happens to be an unistall program which luckily I can say 'No' to at startup. What I would need is a walkthrough for Windows 98 (regedit.exe / ms config) to the files that are automatically run when Windows starts up, I am confident I will be able to find and remove this unwanted distraction as long as I see the list of files, however I do not have the skill required to find this list of files on this system. am confident I will be able to find and remove this unwanted distraction as long as I see the list of files, however I do not have the skill required to find this list of files on this system. You confidence may be a mistake. As you said, it is a distraction. It is not the kind of thing that breaking into the registry. Unless that is what you enjoy. Why not use a FREE program that has been tested by others? Here is a program I have used and I believe it is safe. Published 1999. Startup Cop: Download It Here old versions of autoruns can run on windows 98, too. Windows 98 has the same information for startup as 95. The relevant keys in the registry are HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run as well as another key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. each item lists the title of the program and the file to LAUNCH. Each of these is launched when windows 98 is booted. Ok, how do I get into the registry? I also had some old spyware that I removed. Windows is now trying to run 2 files at startup, it cannot find gator.exe That one should be simple enough to remove... Windows 95 and 98 can't be accessed LIKE XP/Vista in Windows where you simply see a list of files run at start up?Quote from: Koivu on May 23, 2012, 03:51:40 AM Ok, how do I get into the registry?Using the registry editor. Start->Run, regedit. Quote Windows 95 and 98 can't be accessed like XP/Vista in Windows where you simply see a list of files run at start up?you can use msconfig. But changing options there puts the system in a "selective startup mode". I'm pretty sure that's only a MSConfig term though. |

Answer» Is there such a thing as 'Mozilla Firefox for DUMMIES?'Quote from: 69Z28 on May 09, 2012, 12:47:58 PM ... Model TS30H Inspiron 3000 M266XT Notebook....Mine is the TS30I, Compal Computer Corp. of Taiwan I put in 2-256MB PC66 RAM modules in the user accessible slots. They were from a Dell Inspiron 8000 & they worked. With the 32MB module buried inside the 1st hidden slot, that's 544MB. Windows 2000 preceded Windows XP. Win2k does not support IE7, 8, etc., so you're stuck with IE6 or FF. FF does not replace IE, you can't uninstall IE6. You just have to start using it to get used to it. It's a browser, start surfing.Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 09, 2012, 05:24:46 PM Mine is the TS30I, Compal Computer Corp. of Taiwan In your opinion do you think those modules will work in this Dell 3000 I have? Thanks.Hi Monte how are you my friend? Do you remeber me? I have that nasty daughter that I spoke to you about that I put a computer together for and I was going to buy the slocket set up from you a while back. I got that computer back anyway, but I bet you don't have the slockets you spoke to me about. I'm still messing with computers my wife brings home for me. Getting a little better at it.I do have the Slockets around here somewhere. I'm now down to 3 computers, just can't get rid of the TS30I, paid over $2000 for it in 1999. 128MB RAM module was $125. 8GB HD was $100 option. has 1-USB 1.1 port. What RAM modules are you asking will work? TS30H & TS30I are almost IDENTICAL. Mine's actually a Quantex, now defunct. The ones you mentioned above for your TS30I...you stated that you put in 2-256MB PC66 RAM modules in the user accessible slots which were from a Dell Inspiron 8000 with the 32MB module buried inside the first hidden slot that's 544MB. If those will work in my TS30H Dell Inspiron 3000 I just may give it a try. You were asking $25.00 or $35.00 plus shipping for some slockets that you made up, if my memory is correct, that were Pentium III's and said would work with the EPoX ep-61BXA-m motherboard with ONE Pentium II in the computer I had given my daughter, which would enable me to reclock it as well. I have pics you SENT me of it but I can't remember what I did with them. Or was it 2 slockets that would work with the Tyan S1682 motherboard that has 2 Pentium II's in another computer I have. I'll have to do a search on this forum to re-read what we were actually talking about. Do you remember any of this?I found it. It was $25.00 plus shipping for a SLOCKET/CPU/FAN with only 2 wires which I wanted to put in the EPox ep-61BXA-m motherboard with a Pentium II and re-clock it for more SPEED. If you still want to sell I'm willing to give it a try to see what improvement I can make. I never deleted the PM you sent me about it. I even still have your website address as well. Let me know.PM Sent. Will the slocket be hard to install? Also we were talking about re-clocking once installed if I remember. I did finally find the manual and was reading it last night, but I'm not sure about what should be done and if there is anything I may need to change.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slotket http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slot_1 Pull the old Slot 1 cpu out, insert the Slocket. There's locking tabs at the top of the cpu which locks it to the vertical arms. Unlock them before attempting to pull the old one out. Not re-clocking, overclocking, if the motherboard supports it. Review of your motherboard: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/440bx-motherboard-review,91-8.html PM sent. |

Solve : PCI Network Controller help (win98)? |
|
Answer» I have PCI Network Controller listed under "reserved device" in the device manager that is causing a resource conflict (CODE 15). The system can't find any drivers for it and it just reinstalls if I try to remove it and reboot. Windows troubleshooter suggests it's a plug n play device because it has a "manual configuration" option. If I knew what it looked like and how to remove it and add a new one (if needed) I'd definitely do that. Unfortunately, I don't know much about computers...You can't check the engine air filter without opening the hood. If you don't know how, take it to a repair shop. The computer is no different. |

Answer» I have taken my 13g WD harddrive, wiped it clean of all data and files and want to put Win95 as an operating system that I can give to my kids school. I have an old Micron Desk Top / CPU, It was running XP Pro, but way too slow 450Mz w/384 of ram. As with many oddly unhelpful posts that revive an old thread, you'll see the real reason why it is there if you click "quote". How do they IMBED the image without it displaying anything? What is the point of imbedding the image that is not displayed?Nathan had a very good explanation for what it does...but i cannot find his reference Post right now... In a nutshell from what i remember the embedded images can basically track anyone who cliks the link...not a drastic amount of INFO can be harvested other than basic IP addy's and activity... Someone else may chime in with a more detailed explanation...but it's why the images don't show...they don't want them to.Quote from: Computer_Commando on April 19, 2012, 05:24:46 PM How do they imbed the image without it displaying anything? GIFs can be transparent. You don't have to click any links; if you view the page containng the INVISIBLE GIF, it is served to your IP address which appears on the weblogs of the hosting site. However I suspect that it might be a way of making hidden links for Google's web spider to find, in order to boost a site's Google ranking. I just thought: it may be a way of inflating the number of "hits" from unique visiting IP addresses recorded by a site, e.g. to defraud existing advertisers or mislead potential new ONES. Often advertisers pay a rate based on that number. So no tracking, but still dishonest. It might be interesting to alert somebody or try to get the fact of its happening made public. Then again, it could be just SEO. http://www.dailyforexrates.info redirects to www.cuoda.net which is registered to: Billing Contact individual Huddleston Sherry 11591 E Wales Rd Elkmont, Al 35620-4843 US Telephone: +1.8389063853 Fax: 2012-03-19 Email: [emailprotected] Quote from: Salmon Trout on April 21, 2012, 03:54:41 AM I just thought: it may be a way of inflating the number of "hits" from unique visiting IP addresses recorded by a site, e.g. to defraud existing advertisers or mislead potential new ones. I was trying to wrap my head around the angle here. More sinister, it could be to gather live IP addresses, with a view to initiating a port scan or other vulnerability assessment...? Whatever, it's sneaky and I don't like it. |

Solve : Help: Modem software won't completely uninstall (win98se)? |
|
Answer» I have an old usb alcatel dsl modem that isn't working. The screen freezes when I try to connect to the internet, so I tried a fresh install but it's still doing the same THING. No error messages, just freezes. The actual hardware seems fine and says it's CONNECTED. I've uninstalled the software, removed any remaining files and folders and also run a registry cleaner to find and REMOVE the REG keys but still no joy. Is there anything else I need to do to completely remove the software from the system before I try again? I used CCLEANER, free reg cleaner and regclean so far. Is there anything else that would be hidden in the system that I need to remove that's causing a conflict? I've also ran antivirus and antispyware but they didn't pick up anything. This is probably related to your other post about USB not working properly since it is a USB modem. |

Solve : Bootable 98 Floppy logging onto server with a batch file? |
|
Answer» I am currently a student and we are working with automated installations of XP using a bootable 98 Floppy, I have my installation running correctly but I was hoping to polish my batch file jobs a little. One of the only tasks I can't seem to overcome happens to be logging into our server (NetWare, I believe). Once logged in the server launches a splash window congratulating me on logging in asking for any key to be pressed, which in turn kills the remainder of the batch file. I've been trying to download a small NIC driver from the network. My master batch file runs three smaller tasks, NET.BAT (runs all commands to INITIALIZE my NIC card), DRIVER.BAT (navigates the server and copies the driver to my hard drive), and the NETU.BAT (disconnects my system from the network). I'm hoping to find a way to respond to the request to "Press any key to continue" and have my DOWNLOAD.BAT finish it's job... Once logged in the server launches a splash window congratulating me on logging in asking for any key to be pressed, which in turn kills the remainder of the batch file. The problem is that DOS is normally single threaded, so the splash screen exits you from your batch routine, and exiting it you might just end up at the command prompt without the remainder of the lines to be executed in the batch triggering. Only way to make this work I think is by creating a TSR service that controls what is launched and when. But the TSR wouldnt be in batch, it would be like C or C++ or another DOS friendly language etc. You would have your TSR load into memory and run thru the batched like routine, and then the TSR can end when completed. It would be neat if you could logon, but kill that splash screen from taking control. I am not familiar with NetWare, but is there a silent mode option to sort of RUNAS without the splash screen. That would be easier than trying to make your own TSR. The advantage of a TSR is that it Terminates and Stays Resident in memory, so when the splash screen is exited, it can pick up where it left off.Quote from: DaveLembke on September 16, 2011, 06:49:39 PM The problem is that DOS is normally single threaded, so the splash screen exits you from your batch routine, and exiting it you might just end up at the command prompt without the remainder of the lines to be executed in the batch triggering. This is not the problem. I of COURSE mean no offense. I will get to the real problem in a moment. The problem, from where I am standing, has nothing to do with a login splash "eating keystrokes" or an issue with "threading" (I'm not really sure what you mean, tbh, if it was single-threaded one would expect tasks to execute synchronously). Quote Only way to make this work I think is by creating a TSR service that controls what is launched and when. But the TSR wouldnt be in batch, it would be like C or C++ or another DOS friendly language etc. You would have your TSR load into memory and run thru the batched like routine, and then the TSR can end when completed. Another solution might be to use CALL to INVOKE the batch files from DOWNLOAD.BAT, that way DOWNLOAD.BAT doesn't end when NET.BAT does. Without the CALL keyword, calling a batch file from a running batch file does what is effectively known as "chaining". The first batch file is basically discarded and control is completely given to the new batch file. There is no psuedo stack frame- control does not return to the first batch file. using "CALL" however MEANS that the batch file will run, and then control will return to the next command in the batch file that used CALL. The way those batches are written now, executing DOWNLOAD.BAT performs none of the tasks in driver.bat or netu.bat because control is passed over to net.bat. and when that finishes executing it goes BACK to the command prompt. To be honest I had them all in a single batch file to start and then started tinkering once I ran into this issue. I do also need to admit I never even thought about the batch calling a batch, oops! I really appreciate the replies, I will certainly give it a try as soon as I can. Right now, I'm fresh out of work and I'm ready to crash. I'll be back in a couple of days with an update on my progress. Thanks again! Quote This is not the problem. I of course mean no offense.Hey BC no offense taken! If I make mistakes, I'd rather be corrected so that the correct information is conveyed to the member requesting help if I am incorrect, also I learn from my mistakes |

Solve : Windows 98 setup hangs during plug and play hardware detection? |
|
Answer» During install of legit copy of windows 98 on a Dell 3000, I get as far as "plug and play hardware detection" and the system hangs. Microsoft knowledge base TELLS me to restart while holding down ctrl key and then click on start and go into system tools to perform a procedure. The restart doesn't take me to a screen with "start" - rather it takes me back to the "plug and play hardware detection" screen and then hangs again. I had this problem a long time ago with Win 98 SE and I was able to resolve this by removing all ADDITIONAL ISA and PCI cards that were not necessary during build. So I removed my ISA 28.8k modem, soundblaster 16 sound card, and special ISA 8-bit card that was required for the large flatbed scanner leaving just the video card and motherboard as the bare necessities of Plug & Play guts. I was then able to install Win 98 SE and then add the cards 1 at a time with system shut down and fire it up for it to be detected by the system or have to manually configure it, always introducing 1 card at a time per shutdown and REBOOT, so that there were no CONFLICTS. |

Answer» 10 year old IBM ThinkPad runs Windows95 with special Chinese input program. It is acting up. Have 20 or so 3.5 inch Win95 disk. Is it POSSIBLE to put Win95 on a new partition or a flash drive and dual boot a newer IBM ThinkPad with WinXP so I can continue to use Wind95 without having to learn a new character input program? Any insight/pointer on how to do it and what to look out for? Start with this: Try a PC emulator. Bochs or Microsoft Virtual PC are the best options for Windows 95 systems.See Reply #3. |

Solve : win98 v4.10.1998; printing problem Microline / Okidata ML380? |
|
Answer» Configuration: 1. Windows 98 (first edition) v.4.10.1998 - 64MB RAM 2. Printer Okidata ML380 connected by centronics cable to PC. 3. Accounting Program - based upon PC/MS-DOS - running in MSDOS box of windows98. Problem: When output has to be printed from the Accounting Program, the printer STARTS printing, however non-recognizable characters are printed by the printer. It is not possible to get readable characters on paper when printing from a win98 application or by the print command from MSDOS box. What did I do to isolate the problem: Printer: 1. Printer selftest: printing of ASCII characters (OK), printing of running ASCII characters (OK). All output of selftest is OK. Windows98 on PC (the PC with printing problem) 2. removing the printer driver and installing the OKIDATA ML380 printer driver as well as the Epson LQ-2550 printer driver. The Okidata ML380 emulates the LQ-2550. This did not solve the problem. 3. Printing a Testpage after installation of the printer drivers was selected. The printer starts printing, TEXT is not recognizable. This indicates a problem. Windows98SE on Laptop (laptop no printing problem) 3. a laptop running Windows 98 (SE): installed the Okidata ML380 as well as the LQ-2550 drivers from windows98SE CD-ROM via Configuration / Add Printer procedure. The Okidata ML380 printer was connected to this laptop via the same printer cable. The Printer OKIdata / Microline ML380 prints the output correctly. 4. same as 2. but via the laptop windows 98SE: Testpage windows98 is printed correctly. 5. The printer port assignment is: LPT1 Conclusion: 1. the printer ML380 is OK 2. the printer cable is OK 3. the OKIdata printer driver is OK 4. the Epson LQ-2550 printer driver is OK 5. win98SE (without the accounting program) works OK with printer the problem is isolated to the PC running win98 v.4.10.1998 =========================================== 6. win98 on PC with accounting progrma does not work OK with printer =========================================== There is no program documentation of the Accounting Program. The Accounting Program is started from the Desktop of windows 98, refering to a bath program xyz.bat. This program starts and operates correctly with all data entered. The data is saved in multiple files, which are related to each other via the Accounting Program. Incorperated in the Accounting Program is the Printing Function. Just pressing should provide the output listing of the selected report Is it possible that code page defined in windows98 (FE) xxx.ini conflict with code page definition in config.sys (DOS) ?Irrelevant- in fact, Windows Drivers are entirely redundant to the issue, since they are never used by DOS programs. Quote The DAT files are readable with the windows98 editors, the control characters for make-up work just as in standard txt files. Then you should also be able to print by copying it to the printer: COPY file.dat PRN Quote I wonder what the format of the IDX files is. It may be determined by the programming language used in those PC DOS / MS DOS days.Programming language is redundant as well. It was probably C, but it doesn't matter. [/quote] |

Solve : upgrade win98 to win98SE? |
|
Answer» PC with win98 (first edition) gives some trouble. Is it possible to upgrade from win98 (1st) to win98SE? A. PC with win98 (first edition) gives some trouble. Is it possible to upgrade from win98 (1st) to win98SE?A. YES. B. Yes & yes. C1. Don't remember. C2. Yes, but may lose installed programs. Here is the method i used YEARS ago... In Explorer travel to the root directory... Rename win.com to win.old...after making a copy of it and moving it to another directory... Boot to the Win98SE CD and RUN setup. Upon completion all your data and APPS should be intact. As always you should backup all important data 1st...It must be the renaming of win.com to win.xxx to make the installation CD of win98SE work for upgrading. It is a very long time ago I have done this..... Who's feeding the Parrots again ? ? |

Solve : computer will no longer read CDs? |
|
Answer» My WINDOWS 98 standard edition will no longer read CDs. I was WONDERING if there's anything that can be done, or if its completely DEAD. Our family has had it for 12 years, and it isn't the end of the world if it won't read CDs anymore, but there are some games on there that my much younger brothers LIKE that aren't compatible with any of our other computers. |

Answer» Windows 98SE, Excel 2000. I was doing an edit on an Excel spreadsheet when the screen froze. The arrow of the mouse MOVES around but clicking on Firefox, Word, START does nothing. I have had this problem occasionally in the past. I have then simply re-booted. If I reboot now on that computer, I will LOSE the edit I have done. Is there an alternative?1. Press the alt key then the down arrows should give you access to the pull down menus so you can select save or save as to save the excel document you are working on. |

Solve : Recover Win98 HDD? |

Answer» If you hook it up as a slave in a working machine and run chkdsk /r on it it may help... Many USB devices sold are out of specification. The don't work right. ERROR recovery is very poor. Please stop posting nonsense. Thank you.Quote from: patio on February 14, 2011, 10:01:42 AM If you hook it up as a slave in a working machine and run chkdsk /r on it it may help... No, it didn't work. The other recovery tools didn't work as good.Doing a Win98 Repair install should have been covered in your studies...Quote from: patio on February 14, 2011, 02:22:58 PM Doing a Win98 Repair install should have been covered in your studies... We studied XP and later. Why would they make us study win98. Maybe instead of posting for nothing, you should tell me how to repair a windows 98 machine. I know XP has a recovery tool. Does windows 98 have one? help me instead of making me run around.Go to the Root directory and rename win.com to win.old... Boot to the Win98 CD and reinstall Windows... Providing the HDD is not corrupted all your data and apps will be intact... PS first time this Month i assisted a snnoot.Quote from: patio on February 14, 2011, 02:39:02 PM a snnoot. Very apt description. His posting priveledges and the offending Post where he showed a supreme command of the English language have been revoked......and I thought I was an ill-mannered lout! This TYPE thread seems to be something of a new norm here. It's one of those "only help me by doing what I say!" questions. I've seen it time and time again, and this forum is HARDLY the only one; people challenging the help they receive because of some mistaken superiority because they have a certificate or something. It's not like you got a phd in Computer Science, and even if you had- why does it make a difference? Clearly it didn't help you solve the original problem anyway so why does it make you more qualified to assert that provided solutions are wrong? "I'm a newly graduated IT Tech I know what I'm doing" Clearly, at least in this particular case, you do not, that's why you posted here to begin with. If you knew what you were doing you wouldn't be asking what you should be doing. Same for me. If I post a question, it's because I either don't know what I'm doing or am unsure what I'm doing. I wouldn't be about to think that despite my years of working with COMPUTERS not being any help to solve whatever issue I was facing that it is still applicable to tell people that they aren't helping and to try to direct some sort of "correct answer" as if I already knew the answer. Of course I could determine wether somebody is spouting nonsense, but there is none of that here and yet you are calling people out for doing so, it would seem. In any case, I had a interestingly similar problem some years ago (DOS 6, doubt they cover that in "IT Tech school" either); It was related to a hard drive and trying to get it visible; since there was no fancy schmancy auto-detected back in this days, I had to guess and keep booting to a floppy and trying to view the contents of the drive. At some point I chose a geometry that was Close (but not the same) so everything appeared corrupted; directory and file names with smiley faces and high-ASCII symbols, etc. I ended up reformatting, and then subsequently had to start over by choosing the appropriate HD Type later on. Not that that really helps. The filesystem is corrupted, that's pretty much all that can be said. Unless you've had to deal with manual selection of drive types it's probably pointing to a failure/impending failure. Wether the data on a drive is important or not doesn't make it's chance of recovery any greater, unfortunately. Before formatting that drive you could try Recuva, but it is probably too late. P.S I believe Patio suggests slaving the drive because using it in a USB enclosure adds an ADDITIONAL layer of indirection (the ATA to USB circuitry) usually that circuitry is not very fault-tolerant. Quote from: Salmon Trout on February 14, 2011, 03:48:25 PM ...and I thought I was an ill-mannered lout!I don't think this was an "either / or" situation Just joshin' ST - actually you've been quite the gentleman lately.Quote from: Allan on February 14, 2011, 10:22:32 AM Please stop posting nonsense. Thank you.Allan: Pardon my poor grimmer and style. I should have said: IDE USB data transfer fails Quote http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/237743-44-vista-doesn-recognize-external-driveThe fault is both hardware ad software. The USB makers ought to make more effort to verify the user OTB experience. Really. Otherwise it is is a huge load on system software people to test every make and model of USB device out there. |

Solve : disk is full - can't load recovery files....? |
|
Answer» ...so i'm in DOS, trying to figure out what i can safely delete. the only ones i'm sure i can safely delete are in the "programs" subdirectory. go figure! No NEED to figure. THis is normal. Each file and folder has a "short name" and a "long name". Sometimes they are identical, sometimes not. If the long name has space or spaces or is more than 8 characters long, a short name is computed and stored by the system. To use a long name with spaces you have to use quote marks. As you have found, you can use cd with the short name cd PROGRA~1 but you could also use cd "Program Files" The above applies only if you are in a DOS box under Windows 95 or 98. Under plain DOS you need to use the short name. |

Solve : windows 98 antivirus? |

Answer» This one works on my Win98SE: HTTP://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/6635/ This one works on my Win98SE: http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/6635/Well once again C_C I have to thank you, (and I did, ). I followed your lead and it is exactly as you stated. I downloaded , updated and registered this AV. I'm particularly pleased with the fact that the AV is Avast. I use Avast on my main PC and so far I have found it to be absolutely,if not the best, one of the best free(or otherwise) AV's available. And yes, how long the updates will last (this version),is anyones guess? But to have an AV version for which they are still FORWARDING updates(Win98 in this day and age), is quite amazing to me and very much appreciated. Again, thanks for this. overthehillQuote from: Broni on February 05, 2010, 10:51:15 AM Avast 4.8 should work: http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/tech/6635/Sorry Broni, I just couldn't get it to work . Not that I doubted you for a minute but I just couldn't get it to work. After more info.(than I probably deserved) from C_C , it finally all came together. overthehillAvira is a good antivirus for windows 98. It is a lightweight antivirus that is appropriate to your operating system. You can search in the internet for the download link. |

Solve : defragging? |
|
Answer» I'm using an old pc with windows 98 SE. It hasn't been defragged in an age and I think this is causing problems (pc switches itself off, locks up and so on). I've TRIED defragging but the pc won't stay on long enough for it do do it. Is there a quicker way to DEFRAG?Defragmenting the hd (or not doing so) would not cause the problems you've described. Can you boot to safe mode? If so, what happens there.I'll describe the problem a bit better. Sometimes the pc works fine for hours. But other times it will suddenly GO black screen without warning, and not do anything until unplugged then plugged back in. Also sometimes a webpage will freeze/not respond; ctrl/alt/delete brings up the task manager but when I click on End Task it doesn't do it, just LEAVES me hanging and won't shut down normally. Any ideas?Quote from: Steve M on January 15, 2011, 01:43:32 PM I'll describe the problem a bit better. Sometimes the pc works fine for hours.
