Solve : Wireless network need help? |
Answer» Ok so This summer I pulled out my dads old laptop and I realized there is a wireless network adapter. Which is called infrared or something like that and it scannes for connections every 3 seconds but can't find my network or my nieghboors. Is there a way to get it working again, like IDK upgrading the bios IDK. you sure It says it searching for wireless internet/networks This just means it's looking for any other devices trying to communicate via IR. the OS sees it as a network device so it might get confused and display the state wrong.like what kind of devices? It's searching for network and wireless devices that it's not finding.example of infrared devices: bluetooth and remote....Quote from: dlx on April 28, 2010, 01:27:35 AM example of infrared devices: bluetooth and remote....Put down the crack pipe buddy. IR is not Bluetooth. Bluetooth uses short radio frequencies, IR is loong radio frequencies. Wow. This image is for you. Solve : Fatal execption OE has occurred? |
Answer» Im running windows 95 and my computer wont boot up when it starts it says Afatal exception has occurred 0137:00000013. Then it tells me to push Ctlr,Alt,Delete, when I do this it say Windows has DETECTED a Registry/ configuration error. And the only way I can get the computer to do any thing is to start it in prompt command only, safe mode and the other s dont workin they just give me a windows protection you MUST restart message. The catagory say to search for the error but Im not sure how to start a seach like that from a comand prompt. And what do I do about the registry it say I cant access it. 1 more thing is there any way to run a floppy disk from command prompt C:\ or A:\ prompt. Im completly lost. any suggestion beside shot my self or get a new computer. Thanks for your time [emailprotected] Im running windows 95 ... suggestion beside shot my self or get a new computer.Your OS is ancient. Get a new computer. Well, OK, maybe not, but I can't imagine using Win 95 for any serious Internet PURPOSE. Are you using Outlook Express with Win 95?but what about all my documents and programs I put alot of hours in my word documents is there any way to SAVE these.Im not using the intrnet at all!! I use the micro word for creating specific document that I need. And I need to get this computer working to retrieve these files.Do you have another computer you could temporarily connect the hard drive from the Win 95 machine in as a second/slave hard drive? That would allow you to search for the files on that hard drive and copy them over to the other computer or a flash drive or other medium. A Classic case of waiting to late to consider backups. It's pretty amazing that people can use a computer for 15 years and not even consider making a single backup of their documents. First question: WHERE are the files stored on your drive? the "My documents" folder? boot into MS-DOS and run Dir C:\*.doc /s /b and it will list all your DOC files. Thanks that work great. But how do I copy them. And any Ideas about the fatal exections or registry/ config. error To copy, first insert a floppy disk (or some other removable drive). Make sure you know its drive letter (I recommend a floppy because its always A:). Type at the command prompt (I assume your documents are on C:\): copy C:\*.doc A: (replace A: with the drive letter of the removable disk) That will copy the DOC files to the drive. If your documents are big, you may need more than one floppy (assuming you use a floppy). Now you can put your floppy (or other removable disk) into another computer and copy your documents over.Quote from: Fleexy on March 31, 2010, 08:11:16 AM To copy, first insert a floppy disk (or some other removable drive). Make sure you know its drive letter (I recommend a floppy because its always A:). Type at the command prompt (I assume your documents are on C:\): copy C:\*.doc A: (replace A: with the drive letter of the removable disk) Err.... they will need to give a full file path. Copy C:\*.doc will only copy doc files in the root of C:, not in any subfolders, such as my documents.Make that copy C:\*.doc A: /SQuote from: Fleexy on March 31, 2010, 08:40:33 AM Make that copy C:\*.doc A: /S copy does not have a /S switch...Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 31, 2010, 09:18:57 AM copy does not have a /S switch... Solve : DirectX 9.0c (Aug 2006) and 3Dfx Voodoo? |
Answer» I am considering upgrading DirectX on the oldest computer in the HOUSE to version 9.0c. (I have Windows98SE installed as the operating system.) There is a graphics card installed, and it is the Diamond Monster 3D II from 1998. If I install DirectX 9.0c (the latest version of that will install on Windows98SE), will the Diamond Monster 3D II still operate properly? I currently have DirectX 8.0, and the card was working properly the last time I checked.Where did you see that DirectX would run on 98 ? ?Quote from: patio on MARCH 12, 2010, 09:34:31 AM Where did you see that DirectX would run on 98 ? ? windows 98 COMES with DirectX would be the first clue. Updating the DX would be pointless in this case, though. the Diamond Monster 3d is DX5 level card, and doesn't even implement Direct3d in hardware, only DirectDraw 1 or 2. Consider for a moment that DirectX 9.0C has removed DirectDraw entirely and you can sort of understand that there will be no gain. The only reason to install DX9.0c is to run a DX9.0c game. a DX9.0c hasn't a CHANCE in *censored* of working very well on that machine anyway. I'd just stick with DirectX 8 on a windows98SE machine. I meant ver. 9.0...http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en Quote Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 2000 Advanced Server; Windows 2000 Professional Edition ; Windows 2000 Server; Windows 2000 Service Pack 2; Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows 7; Windows 98; Windows 98 Second Edition; Windows Home Server; Windows ME; Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter Edition (32-Bit x86); Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (32-bit x86); Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1; But like I say, there's really no point in installing it unless you have a card that supports DX9 in hardware. In which case the real question is why your using Windows 98 with a card that supports DX9 in hardware. Thanx for the info BC...Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 12, 2010, 09:54:45 AM windows 98 COMES with DirectX would be the first clue. The Diamond Monster 3D and the Diamond Monster 3D II actually both support Direct3D. The original Jedi Knight by Lucasarts uses Direct3D. I installed DirectX 9.0c already, and there were no ILL effects on the graphics card. It's still working properly and everything. No problems with the sound card were encountered either. However, the DirectX update fixed a problem I had been experiencing trying to get a TCP/IP multiplayer game going in Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II between the HP 7285 and the Dell 2350 computers. The client could see the host game, but could not connect. (I was getting a join error in the game.) After DirectX 9.0c was installed, the problem disappeared. There are MANY different redistributables of DirectX 9.0c, and I went and got the latest version that would install on Windows98SE. The multiplayer gaming problem with Jedi Knight was the reason why I decided to upgrade to DirectX 9.0c.DirectX 9.0c (Nov 07) is the last version that will install on Win98SE/ME even though it says the newest version will run on all Windows versions. |

Solve : Choose your favorite? |

Answer» Quote from: Veltas on March 12, 2010, 07:22:21 PM If it can't run 98 then there's not much you can do other than INSTALL 95. The comparison refers essentially to the memory requirements of Windows 98; to windows 98, 32MB is hardly anything- to windows 95, 8MB is considered "gobs" of RAM. Actually, this requirement is solely because of Windows 98's "Explorer.exe" and the new web-based features it adds. One can replace explorer with the windows 95 equivalent in command prompt and have a nice slim 98 system if memory is tight (I've run Windows 98 with 16MB on a 486, but I don't remember much about the experience so it must have been traumatic and I blocked those memories ). Quote from: talldude123 on March 12, 2010, 06:34:47 PM No matter what hardware, anything under 400Mhz will handle Windows 2000. Sweet... I'm digging out my 12 Mhz 286 and running w2k on it! Well yeah, 98 was a real memory hog in its day. But if it can run 98, then do that cos 95 just isn't as good in my opinion. Also, thanks, I had no IDEA explorer.exe was introduced in 98, I thought 95 had it.Quote from: Veltas on March 13, 2010, 09:21:08 AM Well yeah, 98 was a real memory hog in its day. But if it can run 98, then do that cos 95 just isn't as good in my opinion. No, 98 does have explorer, I was saying you can get a "lite" windows 98 (like, say for a low spec machine) by replacing the windows 98 version with a copy from windows 95.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 13, 2010, 09:27:03 AM No, 98 does have explorer, I was saying you can get a "lite" windows 98 (like, say for a low spec machine) by replacing the windows 98 version with a copy from windows 95. Oh, well that has fixed my mental image of 95's kernal again I guess, thanks again. I just realised my cat's eating my headphones...Quote from: Veltas on March 15, 2010, 02:30:51 PM Oh, well that has fixed my mental image of 95's kernal again I guess, thanks again. their kernel's are pretty much the same. the desktops look pretty similar too; by default win95 doesn't have a quick launch bar, you need to install Internet Explorer 4 to get that. IE4 is built into win98 which is probably the only reason it has the quick launch bar out of the box.Yeah I don't miss IE4 I don't miss 95 much either but 98 was okay in my opinion... Then again I never went that far with 95, so I'm not the best judge... I last used it in a school about 4 years ago breifly trying to help someone out with something.heh, I had ot for a month or so on my Pentium... then the integrated graphics chip failed and I couldn't see anything on the screen. I learned what a heatsink was then, so it wasn't all bad. Win98, is essentially win95 with all sorts of stuff preinstalled, but it also adds some system-level stuff like FAT32 (also supported by 95 OSR2) as well as USB support (much better with 98SE, absolutely none in 95 retail, and most vendors didn't support the implementation provided by OSR2). Windows 95 was the first release of windows that had a "taskbar; all previous versions used program manager- including NT 3.51. NT 4 took the taskbar and used it for itself, as well. It was a rather messy time to be programming windows- a lot more VARIABLES then there are now. In order to have coolbar/rebar controls, you'd have to either be running windows 98 or later, or running windows 95, and then check (i nthe win95 case) that Internet Explorer 4 or later is installed- and of course you need to change the functions you call if you discover your running on NT. Even big software companies couldn't get the version checks right. Now all the "API" changes are really isolated to .NET, which is really more of a separate platform then the win32 API, too. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 15, 2010, 03:07:58 PM heh, I had ot for a month or so on my Pentium... then the integrated graphics chip failed and I couldn't see anything on the screen. I learned what a heatsink was then, so it wasn't all bad. I still kind of miss the old days, before I started using NT (XP was my first NT OS, but SINCE then I've used 2000 a bunch and I have to give it a lot of credit). I always felt like I had a lot more control in the MS-DOS client days... I have to admit I love DOS, I still use it all the time. I also love cmd.exe, I'm always making NT Command Files. I have to admit making batch files in MS-DOS was a real pain and still is, cmd.exe just seemed to go through most of the problems and were it didn't provide immediate solutions there were still workarounds.Yeah, I felt the same way upgrading from 98SE to XP. (I had used 2000 and XP a lot at school before this). my main issue was that I would no longer be able to boot into "DOS mode" to fix issues. I learned about the RECOVERY console and that worked on several occasions to clean out viruses and fix issues with my graphics drivers. As of yet I haven't needed to run any of the Vista or Windows 7 repair tools on their respective discs, which I guess in a way is a testament to increased reliability (although TBH the reliability is probably due to the fact that this is on a fresh build rather then older machines with bugs in their AGP chipsets). Most of what I know about the older Operating Systems is simpyl based on what I was able to do with them programming; mostly from (the late ) Paul Dilascia's C++ [emailprotected] column. I still remember re-creating Internet Explorer's ability to move around the menu bar as part of a rebar band. it works great. This is the main reason I'm dead set against most people's claims that MS uses "undocumented functions" in their applications; this was used against IE, but really the IE team wrote the stuff themselves; the "menu bar" is really just a standard toolbar, and anybody can use those, and they are well documented. Certainly some of the stuff that people claim is "undocumented functions" is really just tough to do; like with Word 95, which for some stupid reason had it's own gradient title bar (Gradient title bar's weren't added to windows until windows 98). It wasn't a specific function but rather catching of documented messages and drawing the title bar themselves, something which according to MS's guidelines they shouldn't have done (and this was Microsoft office, lol). Anyway, that whole "undocumented functions" thing is a whole other can of worms. |

Solve : win 3.11 wfw win command? |
Answer» is there a WAY to stop win 3.11 wfw loading into windows when the win command is typed running on dos 7.1don't type the win command?that wont WORK because im going to have sevral 9.x os installed as WELL what exactly are you talking about? That would explain why he is using DOS7.1 with WFW 3.11, which used DOS 6.22. Windows for workgroups didn't "use" any version of DOS. it required DOS 3.3 or later, though. additionally trying to run multiple versions of windows has far greater implications then what the "win" command does. However, since it's possible that is the goal here: Running Windows 3.x and 2.x Simultaneously probably works with 3.0 and 3.1, just replace 2.x in the following text with the older version, and 3.x with the newer version. 1. Include the directory that contains Windows 3.x in the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Don't include the windows 2.x INSTALL directory. (make it point to the latest version) 2. When you start APPLICATIONS under windows 3.x or use a device driver (including a print command, which loads a printer driver), make sure that the current directory is not the directory that contains windows 2.x drivers. Windows searches the current directory before looking in directories on the path. 3. The version of Windows' HIMEM.SYS memory mananger in your CONFIG.SYS file must be the version that came with windows 3.x, not the one that came with Windows 2.x. The 3.x version can support both releases of windows, but not vice-versa. 4. If the copy of windows 2.x you are using is the 486-specific version (Windows/386 2.x) you must use the versions of Windows SmartDrive and RamDrive programs that came with windows 2.x. The Versions of SmartDrive and RamDrive that come with windows 3.x wil not support Windows/386 2.x. |

Solve : Installing an ISA Ethernet card in Windows 95? |
Answer» A few days ago, for my oldest computer (HP Pavilion 7285 200Mhz with Windows 95) I had purchased an ISA Ethernet card that is still sealed in its original packaging that is to be used for multiplayer gaming. In the NEAR FUTURE I am planning on getting an ethernet hub to connect the computer through ethernet cables to the nearby Dell 2350 and the main computer I use in my family's library which is the HP Pavilion a1440n, to enable a three player game to be possible without additional computers being brought by friends. The issue at hand is that I'll have a need to connect the WAN port of the hub to the router near the library computer. (100 foot ethernet cables will be needed for connecting to the library computer and the router, as the hub will be in the basement closer to the other two computers.) If the oldest computer doesn't have a firewall, I believe it could be exposed to viruses and other threats if it connects to the internet. ...I don't fully understand. 1. Why do you need a crossover cable if you have a hub? The hub does the crossover. 2. Almost like any other Windows computer. Quote from: Computer_Commando on February 17, 2010, 06:16:23 PM I don't fully understand. I guess I won't need a crossover cable if I get a hub then, as I did not know that the hub does the crossover. The crossover cable will only be used until I get one then. Regular ethernet cables will be used with the hub. BTW, do you know anything about null-modem connections?Quote from: Computer_Commando on February 17, 2010, 06:16:23 PM 2. Almost like any other Windows computer. EDIT: Never mind. I'll look it up myself instead of waiting.Quote from: Ryan on February 17, 2010, 06:17:17 PM I guess I won't need a crossover cable if I get a hub then, as I did not know that the hub does the crossover. The crossover cable will only be used until I get one then. Regular ethernet cables will be used with the hub. HUBS, switches and routers are very similar in installation and FUNCTION. Physical connections are identical. One port (sometimes shown as the upload port) on the hub may have a button to CONFIGURE as crossover or non-crossover. Null modem is for serial communication, sorta like a crossover cable for ethernet. Connects receive to transmit (pins 2 to 3) and handshakes (many pinout variations). I see. Well, speaking of things, I did a test on the newer desktop computers in Doom, to see if a deathmatch was possible using TCP/IP, and it was possible even when one of the computers was using a wireless connection. I'll just have to see if I can get the third one to connect later on.Quote from: Ryan on February 17, 2010, 06:21:01 PM EDIT: Never mind. I'll look it up myself instead of waiting. I thought you got tired of waiting..... |

Solve : Which anti-virus and firewall program(s) are best for Windows 95?? |
Answer» Can anybody tell me what the recommended anti-virus and firewall programs for Windows 95 are? I recently purchased an ISA Ethernet card, and may eventually attempt to connect the computer through a hub to the router for use in multiplayer games, and will want to keep any unwanted intrusions out. Once I receive replies, I'll bookmark this topic so I can return to it later when needed. Just to let you know, the computer that this operating system is on has 128MB of RAM, so I need anti-virus and firewall programs that are light on resources.Avast! Home Edition 4.8.1368 is about the only one that will still update itself. Don't know if it works with WIN95. http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/tech/6635/ and is only used for old computer games from the mid-to-late 90s. Then you really don't need an antivirus. I'll think about removing it later.200MHz Pentium with 128MB RAM will have no trouble at all with Win98SE, should you ever decide to change.Quote from: Computer_Commando on February 17, 2010, 06:10:14 PM 200MHz Pentium with 128MB RAM will have no trouble at all with Win98SE, should you ever decide to change. There are plenty of car or adventure games for Win98. I have quite a few. A good place to search is EBAY. There are other sites which we can't talk about on here. why not?Quote from: comda on December 26, 2009, 12:21:10 PM why not? Forum RULES... Review them.ok i understand all the rules but theres noting about sharing places to get games?Try Populous: The Beginning or Zeus: Master of Olympus. They work great with a Win 98 system.Quote from: comda on December 26, 2009, 02:05:44 PM ok i understand all the rules but theres noting about sharing places to get games? Of course it is read the rules again. I good place to look for older but free games is Home of the Underdogs. Just Google the name. They have a lot of abandonware. Racing games - Colin McCrae series, Need for Speed series and Geoff Crammond's Formula 1 series if you like F1 Simulaters. Adventure Games - There are so MANY good ones, you could try some of the earlier LucusArts games. |

Solve : os reinstall problems - Invalid System Disk? |
Answer» Im trying to install 98 on my old computer. So I use the windows 98 setup cd and format the hard drive, after that it tells me to restart. I restart, boot from setup cd and it does a routine check on the system. After that it tells me to remove any floppy disks from the drive and restart. So when I restart and boot from the cd it says it has to do another routine check, after the check it tells me again to remove any floppys and restart. Its going in circles. If I boot from the hard drive I get the "Invalid System Disk" error. Also the computer just wont boot from the boot disk. If you can get an A:> from the floppy, type: dir to verify sys.com is located on it, if it is, then type Sys C:I can't get it to boot from the floppy. Just shows a black screen... And for some reason, today I cant even get it to boot from the cd either. It says the os is missing. the HD is an IBM DJNA-371350 E182115 HG, and I was wrong its only 13.5GB. As for the other question, Im not sure.If you need a new copy of the boot disk, try this site: http://www.allbootdisks.com/download/98.html You will need a working PC, internet connection and a blank floppy.I pretty sure I dont need a new copy of the boot foppy (I ACTUALLY have two copies) but I will stow that link away in a safe place in case I need it in the future... |

Solve : I need help with win98 not starting up? |
Answer» I am almost sure I have a corrupt registry. It is running win98. This is a old computer that I use at the office for quickbooks only, and of course my dad never backs up his system so now I am a nervous reck we are going to LOOSE the entire businesses financial, please help! If nothing else can someone tell me how I get the files from dos before it completely crashes and I have nothing. how I get the files from dos before it completely By not doing anything -- Until you have a copy of hat is on the drive. Here a CH the general recommendation is to make a 'clone' backup right now. The is sometimes called a Backup Image. It requires you to have another Hard drive available to copy the original to the new drive. You may need to use another PC to download the software and burn the CD. But if you computer does not boot from the CD, you may have to remove the drive and copy it using another Desktop computer. After you have a backup, we can then fix the old system. DO NOT try to fix anything without a backup! That is where I am at now, scared to do anything! LOL.....so far I have copied "my DOCUMENTS" to a floppy then to my other computer so I can then go from floppy to flash drive. I believe doing it this was will take awhile due to the size of floppies....but I am really only concerned with quickbooks, but every name I type in dos it cant find it. I am not very familiar with the abbreviation in doc...like...the "my documents" is really "my docu~1" in dos.....that is where I am confused....so where is quickbooks file I need? LisaQuote from: oregongrl on January 02, 2010, 01:16:20 PM ...I am not very familiar with the abbreviation in doc...like...the "my documents" is really "my docu~1" in dos.....that is where I am confused....so where is quickbooks file I need?...How Windows Generates 8.3 File Names from Long File Nameshow do I make a 'clone' backup ?You will need the use of another computer if yours is not stable. You remove the drive and "slave" it in the a good Desktop PC with enough free disk space to make a copy or image of your failing drive. Below are some lengths to companies that offer the disc clone software that you will need. Some have free trials that you can download. Of course, you have to have a working computer to do this. Perhaps someone else in your workgroup or family has a working computer that can burn the software onto a CD. Acronis True Image http://www.acronis.com/ Norton Ghost http://shop.symantecstore.com/ PING (Partimage Is Not Ghost) http://ping.windowsdream.com/ Image for Windows/DOS/Linux http://download.cnet.com/Image-for-Windows/3000-2242_4-10149389.html The above links are said to be good products. I have not personally tried them all. However I do have one favorite listed below that I've used quite often and I think it is APPROPRIATE for your situation they will give you a free trial and the product is good enough for making an emergency copy of your hard disk drive. http://www.hdclone.com/ Yes, I have my computer that I am on. I actually have a few working desktops. The one that is broke is very old, it runs win98, all I need off of it is quickbooks....(the most important) my dad is ready to kill me, although it is his fault for not backing up...hehe...also the only thing that works is the floppy and I can get into dos prompt. So whats your best SUGGESTION for getting quickbooks off?How to slave a hard drive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z80PqSSLFn4Im sorry but I am lost....I am not sure what is the easiest way to go. I went to one of your links...the http://www.acronis.com/ and there are so many different options....sorry for being dumb....I think I'll be the first to address the actual issue rather then go off on some rant about hard drive imaging. It's been some time since I've used windows 98, but if my memory serves me, the system makes a backup of "system.dat" and "user.dat"; they are usually called "user.da0" and "system.da0". basically, copy your current system.dat and user.dat files. I'm not 100% on their location, but I"m quite certain that they are either in C:\WINDOWS, or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. to move between FOLDERS, you can use "cd": for example, if the prompt starts you at C:\>, you can use "CD WINDOWS" to change to the windows directory, and "CD SYSTEM" if you need to get into the system folder. cd .. (cd and two dots) will take you up one folder/directory. if you want to search the entire disk for the da files, you can try going into the Root of C: (use cd \) and using the command: Code: [Select]dir /s *.da? | more once you've found the file , you can copy it over using the following. Note that where I type the da0 file names, you will need to type the full name and path of the da0 file, unless it is in the same directory. Code: [Select] C:\WINDOWS>copy system.dat system.old 1 file(s) copied. C:\WINDOWS>copy user.dat user.old 1 file(s) copied. C:\WINDOWS>copy system.da0 system.dat <say yes to overwrite prompt> C:\WINDOWS>copy user.da0 user.dat if your able to copy the files, you should be able to reboot successfully. I can't remember exactly what type of a backup the da0 file was; I believe it was created after every successful boot. |

Solve : Advance help with DVD driver needed? |
Answer» I haven't yet GOTTEN the DVD drive I ordered, but have everything else. There's one question LEFT. Does anybody know if there'd be a way to get it to read a 1998 game DVD under Windows 95? I was hoping somebody might have an answer. I did a search, but could not find what I need. A proprietary driver might be the better choice... If you are talking about a DOS boot disk, then any GENERIC CDROM "driver" will do. If you are running the game from inside Windows 95, then you don't need any driver. That possibly could be true. I'll likely save the drivers in case I do need them, and try to get Riven to run without them first. Riven isn't for DOS, and won't run without Windows active. From what you're telling me, it should detect a CD without a driver. Will the drive detect a DVD without a driver? Quote from: Ryan on December 31, 2009, 12:26:33 PM Will the drive detect a DVD without a driver? Solve : Win 98 and USB use? |
Answer» The reason USB doesn't work as well as it does with 2000 and XP is simply because there was no provision for device classes; well, that's a lie... there was, but the only ones at the time were pretty much keyboards and mice- HID devices. Flash drives were pretty much just invented at the time; this is why every company pretty much has to MAKE their own driver; there was no abstraction of a generic "Storage device" class, so it's basically just a USB device. BC No the USB root hub does not appear in device manager. I will try the "this one" link and see if it does anything--will advise. Ahh, well there's the problem. It's not necessarily a issue with the OS but rather the fact that the OS isn't even aware of the existence of the USB connectors. you could try using the Add New Hardware wizard. with any luck it will detect it and install automatically. The Unofficial Win98 Service Pak was a 3 year project and could very well solve this. |

Answer» Please help! Ok my computer worked fine lastnight...got up this morning and turned it on. Lights came on sounded like it was running except monitor was showing blank. Thought is was monitor WENT out and bought a new one....same thing happening. Any ideas? It's a Dell Dimension C521.Do the lights on the display indicate it is RECEIVING a signal from the computer? Do you have a spare video card you can try? Did anything unusual happen before you shut down the system last night? No nothing happened. It did this 2 weeks ago and I unhooked everything and just LET it sit because I didn't have time to mess with it...when I plugged everything back in it worked fine..then shut it off and got up and it was blank again. All lights are on computer, and the monitor goes on safe mode after 5 minutes. I don't have a EXTRA video card. But I wanted to see if that was the problem before I ran out and bought one. Are they hard to put in?No, it's not difficult at all. Make sure you can return the card in case that's not the problem.Ok thank you so much!sureckfulk,Had exactly this same problem today. If you have more than one ram stick try removing all of them then reinstall them one at a time. Obviously if the 1st one you reinstall still doesn't change anything don't leave it in.truenorth |

ThanksQuote from: Tabucur on DECEMBER 02, 2009, 01:35:19 PM Trying to help a friend, he runs win98, scandisk found some bad files & stored it to files (FILE0000) but now his system wont let him reload win98. Is there any way we can restore them ? Thanks I don't think there is much point in trying to restore them. These FILE0000.chk are created by Scandisk. The best thing you can do is start your computer up in DOS. Keep the CTRL key pressed as its starting up. Then select Command Prompt Only. At the C:\ just type in Scandisk and enter. If you are PROMPTED about certain files just FIX them or Delete them and let it do a Full scan so you can check for any bad sectors. |

Yes thats not quite true. I had 639MB, 2, 256MB and 1, 128MB on my Win98SE. It showed the correct amount on My Computer and I didn't alter the System.ini. Within Windows 98SE, you are able to restrict the amount of memory it uses following either the directions provided by "patio" or the link provided by "Geek-9pm". To use "msconfig", here is the direct link, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/181966/EN-US/, referenced by Geek-9pm's link. See the entry for "Limit Memory to <x> MB:".I'm experimenting with this on a different computer (P4 w/2GB RAM) and I'm getting the error shown here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253912 I've made all the recommended changes and it won't boot Windows. The splash screen starts and then the error message, and press any key to continue, then computer shuts off. It boots to command prompt and runs DOS with no obvious issues. This particular computer allows booting from a USB drive and that's what I'm using for this test. It allows to select from any USB mass STORAGE devices it sees on power-up. I've edited system.ini, looked through win.ini, config & autoexec. If I have success, I'll post results. Did you try the "Limit memory to xxx MB" option accessed through: Start -> Run -> msconfig -> General TAB -> Advanced button ? My Win2k workstation also has Win98SE on it with 1G of RAM and this is what i used to get Win98SE to boot properly.Quote from: dahlarbear on November 15, 2009, 08:16:39 PM Did you try the "Limit memory to xxx MB" option accessed through:Won't boot Windows, will boot DOS. Solve : Windows 98SE Exiting to Dos? |
Answer» Hello, |
| 596. |
Solve : I've built a Windows 98 SE system in 2018, but why?? |
Answer» Several reasons really, nostalgia being the foremost. However, the system I built it on isn't what you'd normally expect to see running Windows 98. Also, this post will serve as my "Hello, here I am!" post. If you don't understand my logic (or lack thereof) by the end of this post, you may never understand it. There is a madness to my method, wait, was it the other way around? Considering Windows 98 SE abandonwareYou are mistaken. Quote from: Salmon Trout on March 06, 2018, 03:37:33 PM You are mistaken. How's that? No one runs it anymore outside of obscure outdated systems, it's not supported by the manufacturer anymore, there is no noteworthy active development going on for Windows 98 SE either. I'd say that lands completely within the realm of abandonware. Legally, Windows 98 is copyright software. So are MS-DOS and NT. This is that kind of forum. "Abandonware" isn't really a thing; it's sort of a fabricated moral divide people made up to try to address their cognitive dissonance over copyright terms to justify piracy of older software. It doesn't have any real legal basis in copyright, though; Software not being actively developed or even sold doesn't change how copyright works, after all. The best description is "abandonware" is copyrighted software that you can pirate with little risk of the copyright holder coming after you... which is a rather wide brush. Personally I just leave out where I got software I installed when telling stories. Some of it is legally acquired, some of it isn't. Doesn't really matter, and I certainly wouldn't want to condone piracy. Anyway my OS selection criteria: IBM PC and XT get MS-DOS, obviously. They can run Real Mode Windows but there is no reason to and it runs poorly. Best ot let them do what they do best. 286's that have VGA cards get Windows as well as MS-DOS. Lower graphics cards means Windows isn't worth it. 386's get MS-DOS and Windows 3.11 (And of course a VGA card if they don't have one- ideally, a Video accelerator) 486's I think excel as MS-DOS and Windows 3.11 systems. With enough RAM they can run Windows 95 well. Pentium's/Nx586 I think are best for Windows 95. However, the Faster MMX chips can run Windows 98SE well. Pentium II-class systems I think work best with Windows 98SE. Pentium III can be used with Windows 98SE but I think it get's more bang for it's buck with Windows 2000. Windows XP can run well on some higher end chips or Pentium M's. Pentium 4 get's Windows XP. Beyond that and it's pretty much a choice between Vista/7/8.1/10, or, of course, Linux. No Windows for Workgroups ? ?Quote from: patio on March 06, 2018, 05:42:11 PM No Windows for Workgroups ? ? Yeah, That is what I meant with 3.11, rather than the rather "rare" version of 3.11 that wasn't. That said, I seldom make use of networking on such old systems- not much point really- so Most of the main benefits of WfWG are lost. It might be useful for transferring files but I disabled the earlier versions of SMB on my main systems long ago so Windows 9x and earlier can't access them properly. On the topic of Windows 98SE, however: Generic USB Storage Drivers for Windows 98FE and Windows 98SE Windows 98 Unofficial Service Pack Which rolls in hotfixes and some useful other software fixes into one large cumulative update. KernelEx Which can allow some later software to run on earlier windows versions than they were intended for. It reminds me in some sense of Win32S for Windows 3.1. Where do you live? In Siberia? In the America,s Europe and much of Asia a used working PC desktop can be purchased for under $70 on auction sites or even locally. Depends where you live. They can be found on eBay. Like this: Dell OptiPlex 755 Desktop Computer. Pentium Dual 1.6GHz, 2 GB RAM, 80 GB HDD $49.00 + $18.00 Shipping. Returns accepted - 14 days money back. So yes, you are obsessed with recovery of junk. Been there myself. That's still more than the 0$ it costs to use what he has already. It would also be exceedingly pointless since their goal obviously is not to simply have a second PC but to specifically use older hardware and software. It's sort of like complaining that revolutionary War re-enactors don't just line Rappahannock River with Anti Infantry machine guns. It sort of misses the point. Also, there is a reason many of those systems are so cheap. Like any prefabricated system they are built down to a price, and those ones even more so, using stripped motherboards and a crippled BIOS, underpowered power supplies, and a reduced form factor that makes pretty much any upgrade difficult. I'd say Garage sales and craigslist or kijiji are better if somebody wants a cheap, semi-modern system. But that was clearly not OPs goal. Myself, I really like the idea of using something for a very long time. It just seems to be thong to thing to do. I still wear shoes that have holes in the doles because they are comfortable. Likewise, one can feel comfort in maintaining and old system that one can understand. The new modern computers introduce concepts that are hard to grasp. If you look at it as a hobby, then it starts to make sense. Still, you can get a working desktop with a windows 7 OS for less than the cost of the tools and parts needed to replace capacitors on an old motherboard. Holes in the doles.....Thorough write-up, entertaining and informative read, thanks! Next step: Install broodwar, photocopy invitations to the LAN party...Well this got more interest than I thought it would, but that's cool though. I didn't mean to start an ethical debate on software copyright, my bad. Anyway, I've been toying with the windows 98 machine for quite a while now, changed a few things the (most likely) final specs are as follows: Pentium 4 2.8GHz (Underclocked to 1.86GHz) Northwood W/ HT (Disabled), 512KB L2, 800MHz FSB (Might swap it out for a P4 Northwood 2.4, 512KB L2 533MHz FSB, no HT) MSI 661FM2-V (7060) 478 mATX motherboard, with the following features disabled; Hyperthreading, ACPI, APIC, SATA, and HDD SMART, onboard AC'97 audio 1GB DDR 400 (At 333 due to mismatched sticks) BFG nVidia GeForce FX 5500 256MB AGP 8x Soundblaster Live! Value PCI 5.1ch sound card (Supports Soundblaster 16 Emulation, including FM Synth, doom sounds great) Stock-ish aluminum chunk heatsink with a bracket and 70mm fan robbed from a AMD socket 939 heatsink 80GB Western Digital IDE HDD Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-107D (With CD audio cable, also robbed from a Dell) 250W Dell PSU (Changed out the Antec 350w because it was loud, ran hot, and had far too many wires) HP compaq DX2000 Viewsonic 15" VA520 LCD panel Microsoft IntelliMouse 1.3A PS/2 Dell SK-8135 keyboard I have full USB 2.0 support working, pretty reliable USB mass storage support working through 3rd party drivers, and for the most part everything seems to work decently, a few minor graphical glitches but it's mostly directx related. All in all this is a pretty solid build and a pretty reliable setup. Although I did have to manually tell the computer not to install the wrong USB 1.1 drivers. It wants to install SiS 7001 drivers, even though the USB chipset is the 7002, strange but I fixed it by using generic drivers. I think that's it, total budget, $0, nada, nothing. Well, a little bit of gas to go get a the free Soundblaster when I traded a 4GB SODIMM of DDR3 1333 for a 4GB DIMM at my local favorite PC shop. I needed the RAM to get my Dad setup with my old 1st gen Core i7 920 I bought with a Dell board back in 2013 for $100, stupid cheap, I'm good at finding stupid cheap stuff though. The motherboard, hard drive, and DVD drive are parts my dad bought back in 2005 to build his own desktop, he'd had no prior experience and needed little help from me or anyone else doing it. I still have the CPU (2.93GHz Celeron) RAM (512MB kingston), case (Antec mid tower of some variety that requires the top to be removed to remove the side panels), and power supply from that original build. The BFG FX 5500 I got a long time ago to upgrade my Dad's PC, I think in 2008. I swapped out the Celeron based system for a Athlon X2, which was just this past week swapped out for the aforementioned i7. I am fortunate to have space to store this stuff (Junk, it's really junk), gives me something to do when I don't have money to do anything else. The rest of the parts I got mostly out of PC's I've picked up off the side of the road. I have three Dell Precision 360's, some compact form factor Precision desktop, and a dead (Parts) optiplex GX260. I also picked up the HP case I am using for my Win98 rig on the side of the road. I'll upload some pictures of the antique spud I've built later on today, gonna borrow my Dad's old Kodak EasyShare for that 4:3 ratio goodness (And because my cell phone takes pictures that look like they're from a Logitech webcam circa 2006) For now, I'll leave you with one of those horrid quailty cell phone pictures. And the hope that my suffering and stubbornness have helped someone build a vintage gaming rig rather than go the lazy (sane) route of emulation. [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]So, through some trial and error I've found that my cell phone can do some interesting photos when it wants too, though most of the time it still looks circa 2006 webcam, here's a few of them scaled down. Solve : Low Disk Space for Swapping File? |
Answer» Greetings CH! It's the card...suprised you even got it to work on that setup See I thought this myself, and know that CF cards are a hit or miss. As I see many YOUTUBERS including Lazy Game Reviews using them. That could be part of my problem. Not denying that. however I know im also having some sort of issues with DirectX. I'll do an install with a regular old spinner, and see how my results vary. Quote from: Lisa_maree on September 02, 2019, 08:12:40 PM The motherboard is of the vintage it may have bulged capacitors. I read that as well, hence why I went under the 512mb limit. I also happen to still have the manual to this motherboard. The book claims it can take a maximum of a 256mb stick per slot. so thats 3x 256mb. I went well under that limit. However, I plan to run a mem test to see if I have any ram issues. currently running 98 on a spinner. lets see how it goes. Millions of industrial machines boot and work from CF cards. Although they are normally industrial CF cards and cost heaps. It is a good idea to run the memory test . It is not so much the amount of memory more that they are different sizes, if you have the manual is that configuration supported? I would also check that the memory test is seeing the full 384 mb. Also if you have jumpers for the FSB try installing Win 98 with a 66 Mhz FSB * 3 i.e 200 Mhz and after you have the drivers loaded then set for the correct FSB/multiplier. I haven't had much luck with CF Cards and Adapters. The problem is most of the ones you can get nowadays still identify as a removable DEVICE which seems to mess up some Operating Systems. In my case, I didn't run Windows 9x on it but neither 2000 nor XP were able to create or use a pagefile and any Windows Installer installation would always fail. You may be running into a similar set of limitations with your CF Card and adapter setup. memory scan won't cost you anything but time. Getting another Standard IDE drive to try could verify if the problem is related to the CF Card or CF Card Adapter.Alright. Small update. Swapped for a spinner drive and had the same issues. Got the low memory issue. So I swapped ram for a stick of 256mb PC100 ECC stick and those issues went away. So thats one problem solved. However, im still getting crashing in video games. Tried NFS Porsche 2000, and it gets to the "Create Profile" Screen and freezes the PC, or the screen goes blank. Ive tried an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and even 3 different Power supplies and still the issue persists. and yes. I do need the min requirements of 600mhz and recommended of a 800mhz CPU. You may be running into a similar set of limitations with your CF Card and adapter setup. This is my first time personally owning one of these CF adapters, but the BIOS sees it as a hard drive, and confirms its primary boot IDE and BOOTS no problems from it. Hi You would be better sticking with the Chaintech Nvidia 4200Ti GPU @ 128mb as it has drivers for Windows 98. Surprised you were able to get the ECC memory working in your motherboard. Perhaps download and make a CD of Hiren's from here https://www.hirensbootcd.org/hbcd-v98/ This contains all the diagnostic testing tools you need to check your various configurations. And perhaps find out where the problem is.Quote from: Lisa_maree on September 03, 2019, 03:29:33 PM Hi At this point of the night, im not longer getting the Low disk space issue, again after getting ECC ram. Not sure why it wouldn't work if the board's manual claims it supports it. However, the games run for a few minutes and the screen goes blank. Im starting to think it might be a board issue, but my last idea is to install windows XP on it, and see if I still have problems there. I completely forgot about Hirens. I have a copy somewhere. its been forever. Final update. I might post a new Thread in assistance with what I need software wise. After ironing out my disk space issue, and unzipping files, I successfully got Directx 9 installed and a got a few games installed and kept getting freezing and black screens. Computer would even restart at times. Swapped a new Powersupply, and tried an Anti 9700 Pro, as well as a 9000 card and things began to work with the 9000, but only briefly. After numerous restarts, somehow Need for Speed Porsche 2000 began to play. so I thought, lets try GTA VC. Big mistake. same issue. However I noticed the heatsink felt hot to the touch. So I gave it and the GPU fresh paste. No difference. Sometimes I can play for 5 minutes, other times for about 15 and then it will die. I then tried to see if the unofficial update would help stabilize things, but that ended up bricking file explorer. I gave up with Windows 98SE at this point. Grabbed my Windows XP home (no service pack) disk, installed XP. Got my SANDBLASTER working, the Radeon 9000 working, and the chipset drivers. Installed GTA Vice City, and played a solid 30 minutes with absolutely no problems what so ever. So can someone make a suggestion? Did I simply install Windows 98SE incorrectly? Or miss something? I did a clean install on a hard drive, got drivers, and installed DX9c (I think it was December 2006 last edition for win98SE). Maybe Bad ram had something in the install corrupt. I'll be doing another fresh install of 98SE and trying my GPU's in XP to see if that all runs. Thanks for everyones help, and installation suggestions for Win98SE would be greatly helpful!. Not sayin i'm confused but if all runs well on XP why be stubborn about gettin 98 to do what works ? ? Just sayin.Quote from: patio on September 04, 2019, 05:27:07 PM Not sayin i'm confused but if all runs well on XP why be stubborn about gettin 98 to do what works ? ? LOL. Well the point of this system was to have Win98 so I can run a mix of DOS games and early windows titles. Perhaps I should have cleared that up. I have hardware that is better than this, and could run XP with a breeze. However, I choose this hardware (specifically under 512mb ram and a Sandblaster card) for classic dos games, such as Doom, Prince of Persia, Test Drive, and others that won't run in XP. Or might but are not being emulated properly. I gamed on a 486 for some of these PC's for a while, but it was a pain to get files on and off it without USB and the 486 I had obviously was too weak for some other titles I had. So I figured a high end P3, that still offered ISA slots for proper Ad-lib sounds and running Windows 98SE would be a perfect spot in the middle to run all the games I want both lower end, and higher end of the decade. So im a bit stubborn as you say in wanting to run windows 98SE cause that's the whole point of this system. I have a Core 2 Quad that would work better for a XP gaming machine than this haha. Worst case scenario, I can dual boot the OS's, but id like it all to be in one environment. Then save tons of grief and test all titles in DosBox in the WinXP enviornment...you may be pleasantly suprised.Again Patio. most run in Dosbox. However, most do not receive the proper Ad-lib sounds from the games, or receive proper speeds. Therefore pushing older hardware might have a small advantage. Got it... |

Solve : Recycle Bin? |

Answer» When I delete a file, a FOLDER, .rar, vid, MP3 ect. It auto deletes INSTEAD of sending to recycle bin. It's annoying if I delete SOMETHING I did not mean to delete. Is capslock or numlock on ? ? are you pressing shift when deleteing? patio: that doesnt have anything to do with itYes it does...try it and see,Quote from: patio on August 19, 2009, 05:16:06 PM Yes it does...try it and see, I just tried it, no change. However, if that's an older hardware set, your CAPS LOCK might actually be a SHIFT LOCK.Whatever...Wait a second: Quote from: mikey909 on August 19, 2009, 01:37:54 PM My recycle bin setting is:Did you already use this 25% quota? Do you have any programs which modify the function of the Recycling Bin? I have Norton Protected Recycling Bin, which will put some files under Norton protection, and by default opens to the Norton protected files. |
