Of course... you cant log on when this file is CORRUPT in win98. Advice from Microsoft is to attach to the computer and remote access in order to REPLACE the file. Ideally, of course, a win98 disk MAY repair the error. So what if you cant attach because we dont know how to, is there a string of cmd commands I can use to copy from floppy into win98? It appears that these links refer to a slightly different problem. The OS is win98, and the shell32.dll file is listed as corrupt upon log-on, disallowing the user to log on to his system.

I am thinking that the file needs to be copied to floppy, assuming that he has a floppy drive of course.
I know that if I hot the F8 or the F5 key upon boot up I can access command prompt.

I guess I am after what commands I need to type to transfer the file from the floppy to c:\windows\system folder, to allow the client to log on.

The other alternative is to hope like *censored* that he has a copy of win98 to perform a repair from...



the other option is that you could put your hard drive into another computer as a slave, and copy the required replacement file overThanks... OF COURSE! I guess I was hoping to fix this on site... I am TRYING to do a windows 95 clean install from CD ROM on an old system. I Will VD133 system board. The 95 windows version is an OEM, I have a BOOT disk with a CD ROM driver. What do I do after the system boots and I have my A prompt.Can you go into Advanced Boot Options?
What prompt do you get?At the A: prompt TYPE D: and hit Enter...
Then type dir /p and hit Enter....if you see the contents of the WIN 95 CD then D: is your CD drive.

Simply type setup at the D: prompt and hit Enter and it will start.
You may have to keep trying the above for each letter until you find the CDROM drive but the steps are the same.

Windows 95 doesn't have System Restore.WinLog Assist is a pretty neat program. Not free though...

I own a Windows 98 tower (built 3/2000 by Tiny, Pentium III 650 Mhz, 810 chipset, 128MB SDRAM, and 30 GB UDMA HDD) that I can't get out of this PowerQuest SecondChance Version 2.01 page. It starts up and then freezes up. Ctrl+Alt+Dlt just TAKES me back to it, as well as unplugging the computer. I often employed SecondChance to buy me time with my Word program because it would only work for a few month before it, too, would freeze up. Going as far back as I could with SecondChance allowed me to recapture time with the word processor (I don't remember that reinstalling Word helped here). Over time, this threshold was reduced from months to weeks and now I can't even get back into the computer. It is possible it has been tampered with. Can I at LEAST get to the document information that could be opened with Word on another computer?

I need help with my 98SE edition install. I am currently using XP and want to install 98SE using partition magic. My problem is when I insert the cd into the drive there is nothing that pops up to install with. Am I missing SOMETHING? I don't have a FLOPPY drive. Hopefully someone has done this before & can guide me to somewhere to look for the info or KNOWS how to handle this problem? I have read the read me file for the partion magic but no help.Partition magic works best if you boot to the partition magic disk. insert the disk, then restart the computer, and hold f12 to access the boot menu, or change the boot order in bios. You need to be extremely careful not to destroy your XP partition, I would back it up first.
You might be happier downloading virtual PC (free) from Microsoft and running 98SE in a virtual machine. It doesn't require partitioning, and both OSes can run together.
Also, it's best when dual booting to install the oldest OS first, as 98's boot loader will not recognize XP. You may have to get a third party boot loader if you add 98 to a NEW partition.Well the nice thing about parttion magic is it also comes with boot magic to manage the 2 different OS. My main problem is I can't figure out how to get my 98SE cd to even install. I'm assuming once I can get that installed on the seperate fat 32 partition that I have created for it, it will do the rest for me? I have installed boot magic in preparation for 98SE.98SE was a bootable CD, so boot to it and istall that way. good luck

My Windows 98 wont go to the main desktop when I start it, it doesnt even go through the loading window. Earlier I copied a startup diskette because when i started it before that it just said insert system disk but I got that fixed. But now when I start it, it will say starting Windows 98 but than it will just take me to a command screen (which is black with white letters). I don't know how to get past that and get into my main desktop. If any body could please help me I would appreciate it, thanks.

If I didn't explain enough just ask me what else you need to know and ill reply to you.1. Command Screen. This "command screen"; do you get it by booting from a system floppy or attempting normal boot from hard DRIVE?

If normal boot from hard drive, type "win.com" without quotes at a command prompt and hit the Enter key. Does Windows 98 continue into the normal graphical user interface mode?

2. Safe Mode. Tap the F8 function key about once per second or faster as you power the system up (or PERHAPS restart it). You should see a menu for different operating system boot modes. Use up/down arrow keys to select Safe Mode and hit the Enter key.

and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, you may try this..
Type: C:\WINDOWS\Win.com

If it says that you are running Windows over
an incorrect MS-DOS version.. (under MS-DOS 7.0)
make sure you run C:\WINDOWS\Setver.exe in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT..

I believe that (based on what I saw on my own
notebook) would set the MS-DOS version to 7.00+

I just had this problem on my
old 486 notebook the other day..

I accidently removed the ifshlp.sys
from my WINDOWS directory..

If you trashed the file.. (moved it
into the recycle bin) from the command
line, type "cd C:\recycled" and type DIR.
there should be a few DC
files.. If you have too much.. type DIR *.sys
and it will limit the possibilities..

Find the file that that is around 3.708 KB
and has a .sys extension.. if that doesn't
help.. Post what your CONFIG.SYS says
in it.

(Open it with 'edit')
"edit CONFIG.SYS"sounds like your HD(or system file data) is on the fritz- your first problem was a "Non-system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready" error, or thereabouts. So you made a system disk (floppy) and boot the computer. a floppy disk boot will NOT contain any GUI ELEMENTS, and in general would be used to diagnose and fix problems with a windows installation.


after booting with the floppy, try SYS C:, this should at least solve the "non-system disk" error. Of course it appears that your Hard drive is having more problems then that, given the Device initialization failure of the Win98 Filesystem driver....


Also, try fdisk /MBR

i have WINDOWS me and i have found some old games that WORK on 95 i have the 95 disk i was woundering how i can get them to PLAY or how i can uninstall me to PUT 95 backEven though ME is pretty bad, I wouldnt go back to 95 over ME.this cpu i am talking about is not my main cpu it is a cpu only for games and it doesnt REALLY matter what windows is on it it had 95 before i changed it to me but when i put my 95 disk in it will not let downgrade windows it says that i must uninstal it

Hey! So YEAH, back in the day I had a Windows 95 with a few DOCUMENTS on it. And awhile back ago, it quit working. I believe the CMOS battery died. Anyway, I still have the COMPUTER, and would really like to have a few of those documents back. Is there anyway I can do that? And by the way, that's not my only computer... I have one working on Windows XP and a macbook. Either replace the battery and boot the computer so you can save the files to whatever media you have available on the 95 machine...

...or you can remove the drive and slave it on another machine so you can get the DATA.

My Win98SE OS has begun freezing both in programs and on the Internet. First sign of it is the mouse arrow freezing at a certain point on the screen and then there is no mouse function. Nothing on the keyboard works, not even the arrow keys or the ctrl-alt-del method of getting out of a stuck application.
I always run Zone Labs FIREWALL, AVG antivirus (and keep it up to date), Spybot Search & Destroy along with Ad-Aware, and StartGuard to PROTECT my computer.
The only recent install is Mozilla Firefox to get away from IE's problems, but it has run without problems for several days now before this new problem.
I have checked in the Device MANAGER in My Computer. I believe this is where you get the Exclamation points if something is amiss and I see nothing wrong.
Any ideas you have would be appreciated.
Also, for some time now I have not been able to successfully run Scandisk or Defrag. I have even tried running in Safe Mode.
Anyone got any ideas that might help me?

In my Windows 2000 computer, I am running VMWare. Inside of VMWare, I am running a virtual Windows 95.

Recently, the floppy drive in W95 has been acting strangely. Here is the sequence:

1. I insert a new floppy disk, then click on the A: drive in file MANAGER. It SHOWS the files on the floppy, and all is well.

2. Then I REMOVE the floppy disk and insert a new floppy disk. Now, when I click on the A: drive in file manager, it does not show the files on the new disk. Instead, it shows the old files from the old disk. If I refresh the drive, it still shows the old files. The same if I remove and reinsert the disk.

3. If the FIRST disk was full, and the second disk is empty, it will not let me add new files to the second disk. If I delete the false files on the second disk --- that is, if I delete the filenames that are actually from the first disk while looking at this false readout of the second disk, then at least I can add new files to this second disk. And then these files will display when I refresh the A: drive.

4. The same thing happens if I ACCESS the floppy drive from a dos box inside of W95.

5. Alternatively, I can reboot W95, and then the first floppy disk that I insert will behave in a normal manner. But it still hangs with a second disk.

I do not know if this is a W95 problem or a floppy driver problem or a VMWare problem, so I am starting out here on this forum, wondering if anyone has any ideas about this.

Well, I appreciate your comments. I've had a dual boot machine for years with no trouble. I used Partition Magic Version 7. Actually, I have no complaints with Linksys tech support or their WIRELESS cards. I've been using them for years with no failures. Usually the problems are caused by me. I did have one router failure about two years ago, probably a power surge. This issue I believe may be just an install issue and Windows 98 issue. I'm not a computer wizard by any means. I do have A+ and Network+ training and many years as a computer user, going back to mainframes and dumb terminals. So my GUESS is I need to reinstall the card and software, in the proper ORDER, and maybe that will fix my Internet connection issue. I post this issue here because I've gotten help here from good guys. So I'm hoping an expert will get me running again. Thanks I THINK this may be the last post on this subject for me. I have finally fixed 99% of the issues on this PC. I ran Free_Registry_Cleaner and found over 3000 bad lines in the registry that I then removed. Rebooted and most everything was fine again. Except I had no Internet connection. Apparently my Linksys WMP54G died. So I dug out the WMP11 from my dead Dell Dimension 8100 and installed it in the Win98 PC. So that fixed the Internet connect issue. Now I need to install a sound card. I had a Soundblaster Live Value CT4780 card in the Win98 PC. I removed it during troubleshooting. Hope it works when I reinstall it.

getting down to the NITTY gritty is what makes you better in the long RUN...If you can rename win.com to win.old and re-install Win98 it will retain all your data and programs...

I have a conventional 98SE install on C:-drive on an 80GB HDD. C:-drive is 5GB, and there is a 15GB D:-drive, with the single optical drive, a DVD-burner, as E:-drive. The rest of the disk is occupied by a Linux install.

The PC has a Gigagyte GA-K8VM800M (rev. 2.0) mainboard, Athlon 64 AMD 3000 2GHz, and 1GB DDR400 RAM - 98SE is set to read 384MB of this.

The 98SE install has ZoneAlarm, Avast, Firefox, and connection to Cable Internet via on-board ETHERNET.

This SETUP, with OpenOffice2, Roxio 6.1, PHOTOSHOP, etc, is working well.

What I need to do is to Edit the contents of the Boot Menu. I'm aware that you can add controls for it in MSDOS.SYS, but not of a way to edit or re-set the existing options on it. Perhaps like the NT BOOT.INI file or a Linux LILO or GRUB file. My intention is to do a Customised install on a purpose-made PC, but to try it out on this PC first.

That is - where is - or is there - an editable file that has the contents list for the Boot Menu?

After a lot of Googling, Forum searching, so on, I'm starting to think this is a bit of a mystery.....

I do hope somebody knows about this - or at least can tell me that the default entries in Boot Menu are "made in" and so can't be edited, anyway...

i got a new PC, its already BUILT OS, and i think it is Fedora core linus 4 DS, if im not wrong. but i didnt like the OS, i wish to install ANOTHER OS, i wish to install windows XP, but the problem is, evry time i inserted the CD yo the CD-ROM drive nothing happend so i read my manual, then i found out that i need to install Windows98 first before installing any OS. so i seach how to install windows 98 in internet like google, as usual i need to format my drive, i think it s drive c:, but before i format it, i delete all partition in my PC, by following this instruction;

Partitioning your new hard drive

1. Power up the laptop with the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the machine. The machine will boot to the CD and bring you to a Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM Startup Menu. Arrow down to option 2. Boot from CD-ROM and press the Enter key.
2. This will bring up to another Windows98 startup menu. On this menu select option 2. Start computer with CD-ROM support and press the Enter key. The machine will continue to boot and then take you to an A:\> prompt.
3. At the A:\> prompt, type FDISK and press the Enter key.
4. It will ask you if you WANT to enable large disk support. Press Y and press Enter.
5. Choose option 1, Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive.
6. Choose option 1 Create Primary DOS Partition.
7. FDISK will then verify the drive integrity for a couple of seconds. When it ASKS you if you want the maximum available size, press Y and press Enter. It will then verify the drive integrity one more time and then say you must restart your system for your changes to take effect.
8. Press ESC to exit FDISK. This will take you back to another A:\> prompt. Turn off the computer by holding down the power BUTTON for 6 seconds

Installing Windows 98

1. Turn the Computer back on.
2. Select 2. Boot from CD-ROM and press Enter.
3. A screen will come up with 3 selections. Select 2. Start computer with CD-ROM support and press Enter.
4. At the MS-DOS prompt, type D:\ and press Enter. Type in CD win98 and press Enter.
5. Type in format /u c: and press Enter.
6. Next a message will say WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)? Press Y and then Enter.
7. After format is complete, you will have to enter a Volume Label. Press Enter.

....then after that i need to turn off the PC and ON it after, then at the windows 98 menu, i select the option 1, "start computer with CD-ROM support" then enter, it say that my drie is E:, so i enter E: at dos promt, then type SETUP, it seems like this a:\>SETUP but nothing happened, i got erroe messge when i enter SETUP message say "bad command or file name" what could i do? please help.. i also try other command like E:SETUP, E:\ETUP, E:\win98\SETUP, E:\win98\setup\setup, i also try to search the DIR to finds win98 setup files but, i cannt find it, please help me to solve it, thanks a lot!You don't need to install Windows 98 first. you should be able to boot from the XP CD and setup from there.

i purchased a SimpleDrive (new)external hard drive and in the instructions it says to download microsofts 98SE storage supplemeny on the win.98se machine for it to work. i have FOUND that it is named 242975us.exe,but i am unable to download it. i have never registered any of my machines as i didnot want to be bothered by their ads etc. so i donot know if this has prevented my access to it. is this file available someplace, it is the ONE that has to do with the 1394 update drivers for safely unplugging the external usb hard drive and SUPRISE removal of peripherals and is missing in the win 98 os. i have poor eyesight and may be missing some necessary step. any help will be appreciated. I have tried on different machines as well having friends try it on theirs to no avail.
