I got the COMPUTER with a sticker that described the issue on the case. I decided to reinstall windows 98 thinking it was just a corrupted install. I FORMATTED and reinstalled windows 98 without any issues. I created a password and logged in. It was about to go to the desktop after installing some drivers. As SOON as a windows pops up which you can pause to see in the video. It crashes to a black screen as the CD drive spins down. The power buttons are unresponsive. It turns on again if I unplug it and plug it back in. I have tried unplugging all the hardware except the hard drive. IT WILL BOOT INTO SAFE MODE PERFECTLY I do not have any other IDE hard drive to test it to see if its a hard drive. Here is a video displaying the issue.Windows 98 Crashes to black screen after login. |

|
Answer» I have an old Dell 3000 M266XT that I can put to use, but need to find the 3.1 O.S. on floppy disks or CD if there is such a thing. I want to do a fresh install from 3.1 up to Windows 98 using 95 Upgrade and then to 98 Upgrade only because I have both Upgrades 95 and 98. Ultimately I want to end with 98 SE if I can find a copy of that. I FOUND a few sites that claim they have 3.1 OS in zip form but not having any luck LOADING to floppies ones files are extracted. Any HELP would be appreciated. My reason for the 3.1 is because that is what was on the laptop HDD when it was given to me and I just bought the 95 upgrade and then the 98 upgrade after that...so no full versions of anything. except XP and Vista. I loaded XP on it but boy was it a dog. |

I googled this and only found people with the same problem as me. Is the Windows Update connection encrypted? Since the computer I am UPDATING from is connected to the internet with a wireless adapter, encrypted data connections that sites have (such as amazon) NEVER works. Windows Update works on my computer where it is directly connected to the router. I FIGURE this is the problem, but can someone at least tell me what this error code means? I went to the microsoft "Windows Update" community newsgroup and they never answer. Someone please help, I think my computer is missing quite a few updates.I'm not an expert but make sure you have the software for your wifi network installed correctly . . . make sure the correct drivers are thier and if there is an interface to tcp-ip make sure wifi or 802.11 is specified. Also try looking at ssl. ssl is a tcp-ip protocol that enables SECURE transmition. . . i would update the browser to ie 6 which would have up to date ssl then connect through your wifi. Okay, thanks. I'll see if it works, thanks for the help. |

Answer» Fiirst of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all. I have a gateway 700 computer. I just installed a new seagate 40g hard drive. The old hard drive died, and was 10g. ...How come they didn't load from operation back up cd, and is it as simple as finding and loading those drivers... Win98 isn't too good at finding its drivers. When it asks for them, you may have to point it to the exact directory on the CD. How do you know which one this is? Start with \Win98, if it can't find them there, try somewhere else.http://www.probz.com/win98/ |

|
Answer» Hi, Part # CR2032...available almost anywhere...bottom side up on the install. The battery is a CR2032... just as you find AA's, AAA's, C's, etc. They sell them in a variety of locations, including wal-mart. when installing the battery, the label of the battery will face up. Although in general there is a small picture nearby on the motherboard to indicate the direction. The general theme to GET from all this is to install a battery. However to revisit that you might perhaps be expecting to find a more COMMON form of battery, such as a Double-A? it is a small, penny-sized, coin shaped battery, usually nestled in the front near the front panel headers.no i mean i can't seem to locat the battery in computer to replace it. i found a possible battery but it's sawdered in the motherboard. Is it possible for it to be a rechargeable battery. A few types had the battery soldered to the board... is it shaped like a cigar *censored*? If it is soldered, you might be out of luck, without professional help (and/or a soldering iron) as well as the replacement, which depending on it's form FACTOR might be hard to get.I was able to rescue an older board by soldering in a 2 cell AA holder.... This was years and years ago and i was still pretty adept at my soldering skills. I wouldn't suggest trying it yourself...ask one of the repair shops in your area what they recommend... Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 05, 2009, 08:56:06 AM A few types had the battery soldered to the board... is it shaped like a cigar *censored*? no more like tik tak and the numbers on are 14.3063 when i start it up it tells me cmos battery low and in the bios it keeps resetting as no hard drive no cd so i can't install every time i must informbios of hdd and CD I'm going to leave it pluged into the power for 24h see if maybe it charges cause i think its chargeable. Answer» I know we are now somewhat away from our O/P's original post but i feel the need to reenter the discussion. I believe it was an old venerable Tibetan monk that once declared "the only things guarantied in life are death and taxes--all others CONTAIN an element of uncertainty". I think that is what he said. truenorth Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 11, 2009, 04:06:50 PM Maximum PC is an Awful PC magazine, IMO.So you think you should defrag flash memory? So do you know of a better PC magazine? And I actually happen to LIKE Maximum PC. Quote from: Cityscape on August 12, 2009, 11:28:21 AM So you think you should defrag flash memory? hee hee "awful" probably was an overstatement. I actually simply don't like PC magazines, of any form. And I don't think defragmenting flash memory is a good idea at all- after all, it does write to the cells, and the cells only have a limited (if not very large) number of write cycles they are designed for. Actually I rarely defragment at all. Which is kind of funny considering that I would defragment floppy DISKS on my 286. In fact I purposely would FRAGMENT a floppy just to see how long I could make the defragment take. (it was a 286, I couldn't exactly run Doom, so I had to occupy myself somehow, lol). Answer» HELLO Everyone, This might seem like a odd request but here it goes. First I have a 2 year old gate way that just came back from service and now will not turn on. Next I have a 35 day old Dell I purchased from best buy and it also one morning last week would not boot up just black screen. So, in my desperation to get to the internet I went back to my attic where my old HP computer sets. Set it up last night and thought hey dial up sucks but I have online commitments to meet. I blew off the dust and fire it up. Low and behold it seem good as new to me. Back in the day I was using this AOL was my only way to the internet. So, their screen pops up and says "aol does not have FREE dial up any longer". I could still get to the browser and was searching a few free dial up providers and when I was about to down load one I was dumped. AOL comes back on and says I need to sign back on through another internet connection then reset up an account with them. MY PROBLEM is: I have ATT wireless internet connection in my home. It's my understanding my 56k modem can't be connect through wireless. Is that true? If so how can I get back AOL seeming having complete control now over this old computer? Help if you have suggestions. I like what I see on this site. I'm going to search around to see if I can speed this old HP up. My goal here is to have this old machine as a back up to my laptops. Funny I realized I had this hP for 10 plus years. Never needed repaired. Never crashed. Why do I struggle with LAP tops?? Thanks for taking the time to reply, Kyou can install a NIC or wireless NIC into the HP to connect it to your router/modem. Their are USB devices you can buy as well that can add wireless functionality.O really even to a unit as old as this? Ok, I will get all my machine specs and go to best buy and see if they can help me. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks, Kyep, all you need is a open PCI slot. I was using a PC from around 1999 until recently- probably newer then your HP (?). "PCI" has been the connection interface since around 1994, so you should be alright. Just make sure you have a free slot. worst case scenario you remove the Modem, which is possibly consuming a PCI slot, and replace it directly with a network card. What OS is your HP running? Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 10, 2009, 03:08:32 PM What OS is your HP running?I'd take a guess that it's running 98 or 98SE.Thanks for the reply. I don't know what a PCI slot is. I have two spots where the usb ports can plug in. Are we talking about the small NARROW slots? Lastly I don't know what OS means. Windows 98 is the best I can do. I need to start it up and look at my control panel to get these details? Sorry to still be in the dark ages. At my age I'm going kicking and screaming into this world (48). After two lap tops going black. I have a real concern with doing BUSINESS online. Thanks again, KA PCI slot is a slot located to the lower rear of your motherboard. There should be 2-6 of them. They are about 2.5 inches long and look like their designed for a card of some type. Your PC probably has a least 1 PCI card plugged in (a modem maybe). The PCI will have a plug for whatever it is one the rear of your case when plugged in. Quote from: kdtl61 on August 11, 2009, 02:09:28 PM Thanks for the reply. The PCI are at the bottom of the motherboard while USB will be near the middle or top.Thank you all again for your advise. Last night I went home and dug into my paperwork on this machine. Here are all the specs of this 1999 HP pc intel celeron 366 MHZ 64 MB memory 6.4 gigabyte hard drive 32x max ce-rom drive 56K Flex V.90 modem 128K level 2 cache ATI rage IIC graphics 4mb video memory Side note I got into the control panel and clicked on Modem: It list the 56k but it also listed the following: Modem RockwellHCF 56k speaker phone PCI modem I bring this up since CITYSCAPE from above suggest I can hook up my add on wireless through this port. Now that you all can see what I'm working with what suggestion for up grades do you see are possible for this machine? My goals are to be able to work with my AT&T wireless. To have a bit more speed ..just because why not? My usage is for one thing only that is to be able to get to the internet, get to the Googles Doc site and do the work I have to do there with templates. Lastly I want a pc that will turn on when needed when my lap tops fail. A good old back up. Any suggestion? Thanks for your time once again, K OK, it's Operating System is almost assuredly windows 98 or 98SE. The problem there... is that I cannot think of a wireless card that will install in windows 98. If you look for one, make sure that it supports it. Another issue: Installing a wireless card entails taking the PC case off and plugging the card into the Guts. If your not comfortable with that, we'll need to find a way to get your Modem to communicate with your router or ADSL modem... Which I have no experience with. Quote from: kdtl61 on August 12, 2009, 07:08:03 AM Now that you all can see what I'm working with what suggestion for up grades do you see are possible for this machine? Please let use know the model of your motherboard. Most upgrades are largely affected by your motherboard. If you can't find you motherboard model use a small program called Belarc Advisor (get here: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html). It will tell you everything about your PC. You find motherboard info under the "Main Circuit Board" section.CityScape, Would I have to down load that program into the HP computer? If so thats my first problem I can't get to the internet. If I open the unit will it have a marking on the mother board? Sounds like finding the mother board model is my last hope. I'll look for more info tonight. Thanks I might have to take to a local computer guy to see if the Wireless is possible. I have said all along it's Running Window 98. I'm not sure what the 98SE is. *SPAM* can you tell I'm hopeless? Yet, I still believe anything is possible:) Thanks, K Quote from: kdtl61 on August 12, 2009, 01:15:41 PM I might have to take to a local computer guy to see if the Wireless is possible. Quote I have said all along it's Running Window 98. I'm not sure what the 98SE is.Windows 98 came in two editions- plain old windows 98, and 98SE (second edition). Most stuff out there these days that will work with windows 98 only works with 98SE. In fact most USB devices don't work with the first edition- this makes the USB flash OPTION a bit difficult, as well. If you've successfully used any USB devices then You probably do have windows 98SE. Want to find out? Right Click my computer and select properties- the windows version number should appear on the dialog that pops up. the version for the first edition was 4.10.1998 (I think) and SE was 4.10.2222. NO. that is all i have to say about that. The way it is configured right now is about average, maybe even on the higher side for PCs that came with windows 98. If any upgrade occurs it should me to 98SE... XP is definitely out of the question, without major upgrades to video, RAM, and HD space. Not to mention a copy of XP, which won't be cheap. That type of money would be better spent upgrading their main machines... assuming they are willing to spend it at all. It's a huge PITA to find on the web... at least it was for me, so I'll attach them. Basically, get them onto the VM; in a separate folder. Then, with the windows setup program, select "have disk" for video; then enter the path to where you unzipped the files; it will then give you a number of options; choose one (PERSONALLY I prefer the 24-bit colour options...) I think the only way he can uninstall WinME is if he had a Win98 to WinME upgrade CD. Then he would just go into Control Panel - Add/Remove and uninstall WinME. The problem with doing this is as he's found out the Win98 files maybe missing or corrupt in someway so he's a bit stuck. The only way out of this is to buy a Win98SE CD of eBay they are quite cheap. I assume he has a floppy drive. Download a WinME BootDisk and get a friend who has a floppy drive to make him a boot disk. Then he can format the drive and install Win98SE. The other think he will have to do is find all the drivers for his additional hardware, video card, sound card, printer, scanner etc. He will need these for a new install. |

Windows 98 didn't have a restore feature... so I'm thinking you ran through the system recovery... which thus DELETES everything on the drive. But let's proceed as if it didn't. You Could get an external USB enclosure and remove the windows 98 PC's HD and plug it into the external enclosure. Then plug that into your PC and copy the files you want over. Then if you wanted you could reformat it and try to get win98 working again... or just use the HD as extra storage. Since it's on your slave drive I assume D:\: Quote [boot loader]what is ROFL ? ok jokes on me.....I can take it anyway......I had a feeling adding ntoskrnl and hal.dll wasn't appropriate what EXACTLY do you mean by use the "sys" command?.... nevermind I think I get it edit: ROFL: rolling on floor laughing .........that is funny isn't it... |

Answer» Now i'm curious, which Windows started having unique product keys? Me, 2000?XPNone.Most PROGRAMS don't have unique product keys either. The unique keys are so that the computer can be identified, not the disk the software came on. Quote from: Quantos on June 30, 2009, 06:47:02 PM The unique keys are so that the computer can be identified, not the disk the software came on. not really, it's more a license key then ANYTHING. Once you activate a PC with that Key, however, it becomes somewhat tied to the hardware (mostly the network cards MAC address and other TIDBITS from the other components). So of course it would be this "ACTIVATION number" that is unique to each PC. One can legally install XP on one machine, activate it, format that drive and install it to another computer; however DEPENDING on the scenario activation might not work without a phone call; basically it "reassociates" the product key with the new machine. |

(Which I had forgotten about myself) I've gotten NT 3.51 and Windows 3.11 on the internet so it stands to reason that windows 95 is quite capable of going online. I have to agree with BC on that one, my buddy is running a mail server with a 386. The hardware is only an issue when it comes to the software running on it.I got it to work a few days back using the links provided to me. THANK you! |
