Ok, so here is what has happened so far...

A couple of days ago I restarted my laptop and it came to a screen that said, "Invalid system disk..." However, there were absolutely no floppy DISKS or CD's in any drives. So I made a Windows 98 boot disk from my other computer and put it in my laptop and restarted my computer.

Then, I transferred the system over to my hard drive. Once I did that, and restarted my computer it goes into the Windows 98 loading screen for about a second but then goes straight to DOS. I went into C:\WINDOWS and typed in "win" to try and run it but it says that "HIMEM.SYS" is missing.

I looked through the Windows DIRECTORY and there is a HIMEM.SYS file there so I thought that it may have just been a corrupt file. A copied a new HIMEM.SYS file from my boot disk onto C:\WINDOWS, overwriting the old file. Then when I restart my computer it still goes to the Windows 98 loading screen and goes back to DOS and when I type "win" in C:\WINDOWS it still says that the HIMEM.SYS file is still missing.

Then I tried going into CONFIG.SYS on my computer to make sure that it said DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS and I am PRETTY sure that it did but it said some stuff after that on the same line.

It still says the HIMEM.SYS file is still missing and I no longer no what to do. Is there anyone that can PLEASE HELP me because I am getting really frustrated. All of the stuff that I did before, was I right in doing this? If not, please let me know so I can fix it. Hi, can anyone tell me how to create a BOOT disk for win 98. I think this is what I need as I am trying to revive a laptop that says "invalid system disk...replace the disk, and then press any key"
I stupidly moved the system files in the root of c: and placed them in a new folder. I only have access to a coputer with win xp.

Thanks! i got the boot disk and know I get a command line...how do I get windows to start up again?
You can try typing "sys c:" at the command prompt.  This should put the system files back and hopefully you can boot to the hard drive again.

Exactly what files did you move off of the root of c: to another folder?

GaryHi, I have managed to get into the directory where I put all the lose files on the root of the c: drive and transfer the majority over back to c:. the problem now is getting the hidden files over. I made the folloowing command:
attrib -h *.* and 8 files came up including msdos.sys and io.sys but i don't know how to move these to c:

Cheers, LedaThat's what sys c: does.  It creates those files where you tell it.  Now assuming your boot disk is the same as your OS then you should have no problems once you do that.

It looking better, i actually get to see the windows 98 screen come up but it won't completely open, not even is safe mode. I get "an internal stack overflow has cused this session to be halted. CHANGE the stacks getting in your CONFIG.SYS file, and then try again. Of course I do not have win 98 disk....

Did you do the "sys c:" after you COPIED the files back?  If so go find your config.sys and autoexec.bat and copy them back again.

SURE would be easier if you had a 98 disk.  You can install 98 (same exact VERSION) directly on top of 98 and not loose any settings, programs, etc. (Well almost nothing), but they need to be the exact same version.

GaryHi again, I am going to do my best to get hold of a 98 disk, it is just that I am far from home on vacation and not sure if I can find a disk here....
When you say copy the files again, you mean from the directory in the c drive where I stupidly placed them? I did this and no luck...or do you mean I shold copy them from the floppy boot disk? If so what command would that be?

What OS would you install in a pentium 233 MHZ, 32 meg RAM and 2 Gig HD?
Windows 95 or 98?. I thnk I could install w98 and then use IEradicator to get RID of Internet Explorer and related files, I don´t need them.
ThanksWin98SE.  Leave IE, it's needed for Windows Update.  If you don't like IE, don't use it.

BTW, Win98, MS Office, antivirus, firewall, etc., take about 1.5GB.  2GB is enough.

Another 32MB of MEMORY will help a lot.

Okay here it is... My fiance and i got here old comp back from her MOTHERS place and it was bogged down. It to like 5 mins to OPEN my comp. I spent day making it run faster. I got about a 50%increase of speed. But other problems came up so we decieded to wipe everything and start over.
So i fdisked and formated my 2 drives to look like this



1) C: Pri Dos | 4918 MB | Fat32 | 100%
 
2) D: Pri Dos | 4863 MB | Fat32 | 50%
   E: Ext Dos | 4897 MB | Fat32 | 50%

Did i do this right, i want windows to be on C: .
So then im in dos with cdrom support and i get into F:\ drive.(Cdrom) Then as follows
F:\>setup   ---i hit enter---
---Blank line left--- Hangs for a second
F:\>   ---then returns me here again.

I am stumped with this way.
So another rout i took was entering 1 on the Start up menu(used boot disk) "Start windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM"
It then loads all of the drivers. Then i get the message:
"The Windows 98 Setup files were not found"

This is a brand new cd. and when i plug it into my XP comp, i can see the setup files; whats going on? Is there anotherway around thes problems?

If any other info is need just ask.Can anyone help out here??? It's been awhile since I setup a Win 98 system, but if it's having trouble finding the files on the cd try running setup from the f:\win98 instead of from the root directory.

i tried that already as well i just forgot to post it in the original message. but thanks for trying to help. if anyone else knows, plzzzzzzzz let me know.It's been a long time, but Win98 as I remember has to be installed on the first partition of the first drive. (your C: drive in this case). Has the partition been marked as active and why do you have two primary partitions? Unless your're PLANNING on a dual boot system, I would suggest you allocate the second drive as extended and then build logical partiitions.

Good luck.  It appears your computer can see your CD drive as F: but your CD doesn't appear to be reading CD's

Try typing F:\ Dir

This will list the directory of files on the CD if it is reading properly - if not it will return with a cannot read directory message

first the second was to be used to install win xp, then i did some research on it and it won't be compatable. Like you said about the partitions, i did exactly that last night. Thanks for the ADVICE anyway.

I've tried to upgrade 10 times now. Fails everytime. Always for different reasons, different files it says are corrupt or it can't copy them but the FATAL ERROR: is always the same:

It's starting to upset me a little. I've spent hours and hours on the phone talking to MS Help (Indian) (no offense, really, but they are kind of hard for me to understand) with no results. It seems like everything is going good, but apparently there's just 1 little file somewhere that doesn't look right so the whole thing crashes.
What is a manifest anyway, and does anybody out there know how to fix this? From LOOKING around different places on the internet I see I'm not the only one having this problem, but so far I haven't found any answers. Please HELP!!!!!

Not a copy. Don't think Microsoft would have been talking to me if it were a copy. But, I'm using it to (try) to upgrade from win98se. Which you're sposed to be able to do??? I know you can partition with fdisk (although I've never done it) but my understanding is that doing that wipes out everything.

There may be one (ore more missing files in your 98SE) that is causing the problems .......Really a clean install ...would probably solve that ..........In other words... Format the existing hard drive ......( wipe it clean)   Then use the Win 98 boot disk to reboot , FDISK the hard drive to creat a partition  and then do a clean install of XP .........Remember you must save any data you want to cd before formatting ......

Then as a matter of good practice ......
Do this .....
Install win xp and SP1 ( if its on the cd)
If you have a cd with SP2  , install it next .
Install your anti-virus software .
Now go on line and get the latest updates for your anti virus software ......
Next go to Ms update page and download all updates ....critical and other ...as well as any drivers listed there .
Then ,I would install your spyware and adware scanners .......
Now you should create your E mail account .....in Outlook express ( if thats what you  use )
Now your ready to start installing your programs.

start Network Neighborhood and see the workstation,
as well as use Find COMPUTER, and see it.

However, WHENEVER I try to double-click to access

[glb]Flame[/glb]You need a WIN 98 boot floppy disk or a WIN 98 boot cd (as I know, there is no WIN 98 boot cd; you need a WIN 98 boot floppy disk). Reformat C: partition (FAT 32 this time, not NTFS). Insert cd and LAUNCH setup from cd.

So to start off. Its a windows 98 pc with a Pentium 3 processor. With a 6gb IDE hard DRIVE. I got the COMPUTER with a sticker that described the issue on the case. I decided to reinstall windows 98 thinking it was just a corrupted install. I FORMATTED and reinstalled windows 98 without any issues. I created a password and logged in. It was about to go to the desktop after installing some drivers. As SOON as a windows pops up which you can pause to see in the video. It crashes to a black screen as the CD drive spins down. The power buttons are unresponsive. It turns on again if I unplug it and plug it back in. I have tried unplugging all the hardware except the hard drive. IT WILL BOOT INTO SAFE MODE PERFECTLY I do not have any other IDE hard drive to test it to see if its a hard drive. I have an old Dell 3000 M266XT that I can put to use, but need to find the 3.1 O.S. on floppy disks or CD if there is such a thing. I want to do a fresh install from 3.1 up to Windows 98 using 95 Upgrade and then to 98 Upgrade only because I have both Upgrades 95 and 98. Ultimately I want to end with 98 SE if I can find a copy of that. I FOUND a few sites that claim they have 3.1 OS in zip form but not having any luck LOADING to floppies ones files are extracted. Any HELP would be appreciated. My reason for the 3.1 is because that is what was on the laptop HDD when it was given to me and I just bought the 95 upgrade and then the 98 upgrade after that...so no full versions of anything. except XP and Vista. I loaded XP on it but boy was it a dog.

The laptop has both cd drive and a floppy drive, and has the highest I can go with memory, I think, and I believe I have a decent size HDD as well which I bought new for a replacement about a DECADE ago and it is ready for a fresh install of whatever.


You won't need to load all those different versions of windows to get the win98. If you boot from a floppy with cd drivers you can download a disk image from here.

And then run setup from the win98 cd or if on floppy disk, boot from the first disk and install Windows 98.

With there being limited support for internet and hardware under Win98 perhaps a install of Puppy linux would be worth considering.

Floppy drive is missing under windows 98 regular mode.  The floppy controller is listed under device manager but no floppy drive is under "my COMPUTER".  In safe mode the floppy drive is listed and works fine.  Dos boot it works fine, just not in regular windows mode.  Any suggestions anyone?Try reinstalling your drivers by going to the device manager, find the drive, right-click on it, and hit update drivers.... (Make sure that you are connected to the internet whe you do this)

I hope someone can HELP me with this problem.  I'm at my wits end.  I have Win 98 SE and Norton Internet SECURITY Professional 2004 (subscript up at end of year).  When I run Live Update I receive LU 1835: Connection to Live Update Server FAILED.  I am then directed to the symantec support site.  The site does an analysis of my system.  It finds that Windows is running on Audit Mode.  It advises going into the registry to delete that key.  The problem?  I can't find anything that says audit mode, and further, there's also a SOLUTION of changing the time of Live Update

I've been unable to complete a Live Update session for at LEAST two/three weeks.  
Please Help!

However, he has lost all his product software - and previously installed W2000.  When he installed the W2000 he deleted all his Think Pad Hot Keys.

We are having to rebuild the SYSTEM.  IBM says they no longer support W98.

We obtained a W98 Statup Disk, and did an FDISK and did a FORMAT c: /s.  

It installed the autoexe, etc. in a D: drive.  Now when we boot - we go to the c: dos prompt.

The computer does not recognize the CD/DVD Rom drive.  We have the ROM driver on floppy - but we do not know how we can get the computer to recognize the CD/DVD Rom drive to use the Win 98 CD to get the computer up and running.

Any suggestions?

When you formatted the c: drive with the /s switch you made the hard drive bootable. Try formatting the c: drive without any switches. When that completes, PUT the Win98 disk in the CD drive and boot the system.

If that doesn't work, go into "setup" (there should be an INDICATOR during boot as to which key to hit to enter setup) and change the order of the boot process, so that the first device it CHECKS is the CD.

When I try to update my computer, right beore it is about to scan for updates, it gives me ERROR code 0x80090350. I googled this and only found people with the same problem as me. Is the Windows Update connection encrypted? Since the computer I am UPDATING from is connected to the internet with a wireless adapter, encrypted data connections that sites have (such as amazon) NEVER works. Windows Update works on my computer where it is directly connected to the router. I FIGURE this is the problem, but can someone at least tell me what this error code means? I went to the microsoft "Windows Update" community newsgroup and they never answer. Someone please help, I think my computer is missing quite a few updates.I'm not an expert but make sure you have the software for your wifi network installed correctly . . . make sure the correct drivers are thier and if there is an interface to tcp-ip make sure wifi or 802.11 is specified.  Also try looking at ssl.  ssl is a tcp-ip protocol that enables SECURE transmition. . . i would update the browser to ie 6 which would have up to date ssl then connect through your wifi.  Okay, thanks. I want to reload my windows 98 and start my COMPUTER fresh. Do I just reload the disk or do I NEED to go into DOS and reformat my hard drive before I reload. I have 2 friends that both tell me different things. I just want to wipe my system totally clean and start over.tenabell......If you want to start out fresh ........format your hard drive ......That will remove all data and operating system . Then you will install Window 98 and away you go.......You will need a window 98 boot disk....( you probably already have one) ......

dl65 The directions that my FRIEND sent me on how to reformat has me making a boot disk as the first step. If I do not reformat and just reload windows will it wipe my computer clean or just cover it up? I have 4 years of crap on here and I don't know what NEEDS to go or needs to stay but I have almost filled my poor lil computer to its max.tenabell...I always like to start clean when doing a format as opposed to just reinstalling. If you are going to do a clean install......remember to copy anthing you dont want to lose onto a cd .......things like your address book ( called WAB ) family pics ..that sort of thing .....remember you will have to reinstall all your software....so make sure you have it handy.......
Remember to copy the settings for your dial up connection as well as the settings for your Email account settings.

dl65  You will need things such as your graphics card driver disks etc and Windows Serial Key handy.Make sure you have all of your drivers and such.... Otherwise, you are in TROUBLE. You know how to reformat, right?

Over Xmas I upgraded from Win98 to Win98SE with a complete disk-wipe and one-at-a-time install of my hardware devices.
Sometime during the re-loading of my programs I noticed that the EXPLORER right-click: 'SEND To Desktop (create shortcut)' option was failing with the message "no CMC Mailer installed".
I tried copying the shortcut-link from my laptop (Win98SE) - this does not produce an error report, but it doesn't work either.
This condition may have been caused by the Win95 'Send To' Powertoys, (I use 'send to any folder'),but removing them has had no effect on the fault.
Does anyone have any ideas please ?
Try running a Windows Update by going to http://www.microsoft.com ... This MIGHT solve your problem.... Keep us posted...

My internet access at work is via a Windows NT machine and the MS Windows Update Site tests which operating system is calling and offers to update only that one.
The 'Send To Desktop (create shortcut)' option did work when I first installed Win98SE and it does work on my Win98SE laptop - it's just that sometime during the PROCESS of adding my SOFTWARE it got trashed.
I had thought of using the 'repair' option on the OS, but I'm bothered that I might lose my settings and that I will be forced to reload all my programs again.The repair option does not normally change any program settings except for windows defaults. If you don't want to use it, open windows explorer and navigate to the folder "send to". You can add or delete anything you want by creating a shortcut in this folder. It is located at c:\windows\send to.Hi 2k dummy,

I know how to add items to the "send to" folder, with the exception of sending to the desktop. If I could do this then I could just replace the missing shortcut.

I've tried drag-and-drop from both the desktop window and the desktop folder, both refuse to create a shortcut.

I've tried a comparison search through my laptop and desktop registers without finding any relevant difference.
You should find a Desktop folder in your Windows folder. Try looking in the folder or in the Start Menu folder in Windows. Your actual Desktop is just an illusion... its contents are stored somewhere in the Windows folder.Hello to all,

Over the WEEKEND I cross-referenced my desktop's Registry with my laptop's.
I discovered that a CLSID entry linked to 'deskfile' had somehow been deleted from my Registry, re-creating this cured the problem.

hello everybody i have an old  98 cd that has ie5 on it and not ie6 and all the PATCHES either i GUESS my question is did microsoft come out with a service pack cd like they did with xp when they went FRON sp1 to sp2 to UPDATE your system or can you only get it from the microsoft site only and thank you  for the info.  hhhhmmmm.... Not sure..... can't you just get the updates from the internet?

Can anyone help? My PC will only start in Safe Mode... problem arose after LOADING some software. Through Safe Mode I've been able to delete the software and restore the registry (with scanreg /restore) and there are no conflicts in DEVICE manager... but now every time the COMPUTER boots, it restarts itself then enters safe mode.

Any suggestions welcome...Reinstall Win98SE.  It won't delete any of your applications or PERSONAL files.Hi - yes, tried reinstalling Win98SE again but no joy. The computer crashed just before completing the installation, and comes up with "Windows protection error. Press any key to continue..." and then shuts down.

I'm still able to start up in safe mode, but that's all. So far I've checked for conflicts in control panel/device manager - seems OK - and checked SFC.exe - this states that one file, setupx.dll may be corrupted and suggests re-installing from the installation disk.

However, EVEN using the Win98 boot up disk (and ext) to access my Win98 SE CD-ROM, I cannot find the file in the cabinet files of d:\win98 to reinstall the file. Computer says the file does not exist.

On my relatively new PC, I have recently added XP to my
(wonderfully stable) 98se. I'm overseas and XP is in another language, and now I can't uninstall it anymore.
I have 2 os on the same hdd, and whereas before I could format D (XP), now, I can't access it anymore for some reason, although it is there. Is there a way, preferably w/out 3rd party software, to gain access to the partitioned drive D to REFORMAT, or another way to deinstall XP w/out damaging my 98? Btw, my 98 is FAT 32, my XP is NTFS, 512MB.
I'de be very grateful if somebody out there could help me.

Well, I for one would not say that having two operating systems is really a GOOD idea..... All it does is eat-up your memory. Who is your computer manufacturer?

[glb]Flame[/glb]You might try FDISK from Win98 and see if you can delete the XP partition.  You could also try the Computer Management Disk Manager in XP but I doubt you would be able to delete the currently running OS!

Fiirst of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all. I have a gateway 700 computer. I just installed a new seagate 40g hard drive. The old hard drive died, and was 10g.

When I loaded windows 98 SE ( to help avoid with patch and security issues) I got an error message I/O out of bounds or something like that. I can start computer and  windows seems to WORK ok, However, it  says I need drivers for  pci card and for audio/video.

I have a 1995 Pionex Elite computer. Anyway it was running windows 95 smothly.
But i hasn't been USED sice 1998 so i puled it out and it worked fine for a few hours. After the 3rd boot bios kept bothering me to replace CMOS battery or hit F1 so i hit the F1 but it tells me i have to reinstall. So i formated and tried to reinstall but it told me i have no hard drive. But the setting just changed in the bios. So i poped the lid to the computer and...... No battery! i can't find one. If it is soldered, you might be out of luck, without professional help (and/or a soldering iron) as well as the replacement, which depending on it's form factor might be hard to get.

 I have a computer that ran windows 98. I want to update thins computer to windows 98 SE for many reson one being that Se unlike regular 98 will work correctly with a Usb flash Drive(JUMP Driver) when the correct driver is installed. Unfortunately when i enterned the Windows 98 SE setup the computer told me that i have a opperating system and if i wanted to upgrade to SE i need to OBTAIN the windows 98 upgrade CD and the computer exits the setup.  So i formated the hard disk drive and installed win 98 Se. every thing worked FINE but when i started on the internet, i logged on Msn then clicked hotmail link and this message popped up,

THis program has performed ILLEGAL operation and will be shut down.

If this problem persists, contact the program vendor.

So i deleted dos partition, made new dos partition installed win 98 se and this problem still exists. Any help will be ACCEPTED.

I don't know what a PCI slot is.  I have two spots where the usb ports can plug in. 

Now that you all can see what I'm working with what suggestion for up grades do you see are possible for this machine? 
My goals are to be able to work with my AT&T wireless.  To have a bit more speed ..just because why not?  My usage is for one thing only that is to be able to get to the internet, get to the Googles Doc site and do the work I have to do there with templates.  Lastly I want a pc that will turn on when needed when my lap tops fail.  A good old back up.

I might have to take to a local computer guy to see if the Wireless is possible.  I have said all along it's Running Window 98.  I'm not sure what the 98SE is.

NO. that is all i have to say about that. The way it is configured right now is about average, maybe even on the higher side for PCs that came with windows 98. If any upgrade occurs it should me to 98SE... XP is definitely out of the question, without major upgrades to video, RAM, and HD space. Not to mention a copy of XP, which won't be cheap. That type of money would be better spent upgrading their main machines... assuming they are willing to spend it at all.

NONE of MS OS's are free, you'd be getting an illegal copy by downloading off that link. actually, you can get free copies of Dos through Windows 95 (might only be Windows 3.1) straight from Microsoft themselves. The only thing is, you have to have a technet subscription, which I think starts at $250/year.$349.00thanks, patio. I don't think I ever really knew what the price is.... my work PAYS for my subscription. It's still a steal...if you take full advantage of all the perks.
I did a Win2008 open seminar earlier this year locally...

Okay so i got my computer onto the interwebz, and I also got the driver for my graphics card (after some trial and error). But now I cannot get any audio downloading the driver. In device manager, it says it is there (under TBS montego pci somethingsomething.... lol) and everytime I boot up the computer it is looking for directx 6.0. However, I cannot locate the one for this device. While trying to figure out why  I have only 16 colors on my Windows 98 I installed my Monitor a Proview I restarted my computer and after the 98 logo the screen goes black I can only log on to Safe mode but i ca't reinstal windows there? restart the computer, tap F8, and select VGA mode          It will allow you to boot into windows normally, with use of the BASIC video driver........oh..........you don't need to reinstall windows to get a higher resolution or more colors.....Most likely you need to check in Device Manager and update the video driver....

try BOOTING into Safe Mode with Networking, then go here:

START>right click "my computer">properties>device manager

next to where it says, "display ADAPTERS", click on the + sign....right click on the item in the sub menu and click update...and see if Windows will look for an updated driver for your monitor

If it finds an updated driver, restart the computer and see if you've got more colors  or if you know what kind of graphics card you got, you can go right to the graphics card driver and get the latest drivers (nvidia.com or ati.com for most average users usually)DLoad;install and run AIDA32...

Hi I'm trying to install 98SE. It does not boot by it's self, and i always use a 98se bootdisk and then at the prompt (A:\>) type the command needed to install.

My problem is that I've somehow forgot what to type or how to type it!
Does anyone know what i need to type?the command to run the installation is:   setup.exe

Just be sure the installation CD is inserted when you type it.  When you press enter, it will scan your hard drive for error before starting the installation....just let it run and when the scan is done, just press "exit" and it will go into the installation..

But you may have problems installing it without formatting the drive first..

If I were you I would type:  format c:     first, press enter and let it format the drive..

Try starting the installation without formatting and see what happens 


and be sure when you boot up the bootdisk, select, "start with CD rom support", otherwise the installation disk will not be read..Okay my problem was I was TYPING D:setup.exe instead of R:setup.exe.
I forgot that my bootdisk always labels the CD drive as R: for some reason.

thanks ANYWAY It labels your CD as R because you are probably using a boot disk with RAM DISK support....   The contents of the bootdisk are LOADED into RAM, and that area of RAM is GIVEN the drive letter "R",in your case.

However, the boot disk I use is given the drive letter "D", so it bumps up the CD drive one letter...."E"Reading the autoexec.bat and config.sys file in any text editor from the floppy will tell you ahead of time what drive letter is assigned to the CD drive....
But R is the most common with OEM boot floppies...

I have Windows XP installed on ONE hard drive and Win98 SE installed on another hard drive...  Both installations work fine when there is only one drive on the system at a time.   However, I set up the boot.ini file so I can boot into either XP or Win98.....BUT, when I Master the XP drive and slave the Win98 drive, I can't boot into Windows 98.

At first it says, "missing hal.dll".........ok so I copy the hal.dll file from the XP drive to Windows\system32 on the Win 98 drive, restart and try again......Next attempt to boot into Win98 I get, "missing ntoskrnl.exe"    Fine, so I go get ntoskrnl.exe from the XP drive and copy it to Windows\system32 on the Win98 drive.....restart and try again..

Now when I boot into Win98 it says, "load needed DLLs for kernal" 

Windows 98 boots up fine when it's not hooked up as a slave drive..... 

I'm pretty sure my boot.ini file is right:

Really it's more a matter of finding the proper patches, both official and unofficial. Almost any game with a solid following has unofficial patches for new Operating Systems; why, even NFS: High Stakes has a PATCH that let's it run on Vista when in fact it barely runs properly on XP without changes...

Okay so I am having a very hard time connecting an old windows 95 computer to the internet. I installed the drivers for the network card, but cannot figure out how to get online now. Yes, it looks like DOS..

Now, once you are in CMOS setup, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate around, generally, pushing the left and right arrow keys allow you to navigate to the different AVAILABLE categories.... and the UP/DOWN arrow keys let you select what you want to do in each sub-category...   Look in each category and look for something that resembes, Start Order, BOOT Order, Drive Order, Start Sequence, or Boot Sequence.....something along those lines....catch my drift?       Once you have found that let me know and I'll guide you through changing the order of the drives..oh, you might have to use the ENTER key on your keyboard to actually enter certain categories to change...In other words, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate through CMOS and use the ENTER key to select objects for editing...The ESC key lets you back out of a category, once entered..




edit: sometimes there are on-screen instructions that TELL you what to do once something is highlighted with the cursor..there is still one problem; my computer shut off after entering CMOS, and now it wont let me back in (i left it to do a few  chores), and when i returned, the computer was shut down. i don't know what to do now! , however i can still enter the computer's main setup utility We need to get you back into the CMOS set up if we are going to reinstall Windows..


Make sure all data cables are secured and that the power chord is secured to the wall outlet....     It might do you some good to open up your computer and check for dust...There is a chance that your computer over heated while you were doing chores and that's why it shut down.....Make sure the inside is virtually dust free and that the Heat sink that covers the processor ( the shinny thing on the motherboard with the fan on top of it) is dust free.....Also, make sure all fans are spinning while the computer is on.


If there is dust inside the computer, you'll have to go buy yourself a giant can of compressed air...

ive had this computer for a while and im not sure what to do.back a couple years ago,my house was struck by lightning.which about fried all the electronics.my computers hard drive started acting up after that.years go by and i got it to work and then crash and then work again.Currently i turn it on it goes through scandisk finding errors on some sectors,and the hard drive MAKES a grinding noise.it then boots to the login screen   but when i try and log in it says windows explorer caused ILLEGAL operation then i click details and it says invalid page fault.then i click close and it stays on the backround with nothing else.I then have to ctrl-alt-delete to shut it down.I have the system RECOVERY disc somewhere but before i go looking for it,im not sure if system recovery will help.Do you think i should run system recovery or just leave it?DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics from the drive manuf. website to see if the drive is data WORTHY...

If that produces no joy-joy then DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics from the drive manuf. site...

The drive may be failing and this will let you know.What happens after the error MESSAGE appears?  Does everything appear to be normal?

If everything appears to be normal, you could just disable SMART in your bios and back up everything you don't want to loose just in case the drive IS going bad ........and just let it be until/if your system crashes in the future, then just replace the hard drive..

running the chkdsk /r  command is still a good idea, either way you slice it
What happens if you disable SMART?It's been reported that SMART is not always accurate in it's HDD failure anticipation.  So disabling it will GET rid of the annoying reports that dutchman is describing and SMART will stop monitoring the HDD.  However, there is a chance that the HDD could really be on the brink, so backing up data at this point is crucial

If there is a problem backing up anything it could be due to file system CORRUPTION and using the chkdsk /r command may help REMEDY that, as Patio suggested..

Hello. I'm attempting to download a game program onto my computer but i'm having some issues in getting it to open. I'm positive this has nothing to do with the game itself, but with my computer (SETTINGS?).

The game downloader file is an .exe which downloads correctly, but once I go to open/run it to begin the actual download it opens up a black window that says "C:/command com" at the top. The window then closes within a few seconds of opening and nothing else happens. I get it regardless of where I open it, whether it be on my DESKTOP, winzip, etc. etc.

Any idea how to remedy this?

Have scoured the web inc. Intel & can't find it anywhere!
Can't afford XP which I know does include this driver.
Does anyone know if the DREADED ME has it BUILT in?

It's a Win98 logoed system and it's an onboard device so I'm sure this driver must exist somewhere!
Could some kind soul PLEASE try and help? I can supply AIDA32 info. further to the above if this helps.

NB A long while ago I found a driver LISTED as being for this device written by Realtek but it can't have been right because the install BSOD-ed and crashed my system irretreivably.
