As Salmon Trout SAID, it all depends on the monitor.

16bit would be 65536 colors.
256 colors would be...well....256 colors.
This means that, if you choose to use 16 bit colors, you will have improved graphics.
(have a look >here<)

As for the screen resolution, 1024x768 is the most common resolution, but you will have to see what the monitor can display.

Solve : My computer must hate me...(wireless adapter trouble)?

Answer»

I'm having another problem...well, I know that that old VIDEO card from ages ago is junk (just tested it), but the problem is that this computer now keeps crashing when I connect to the internet through the WG111v2 adapter. CrashGuard won't intercept it, and the crash is the hard reset type (the computer resets itself). Thankfully, I'm using Firefox, which keeps my tabs...but it's annoying with all the restarts, and I have to wait for the drivers to load EVERY SINGLE TIME (the computer also does a hard reset if the adapter is plugged in during boot). Any ideas?

As always, this is Windows 98 SE, 4.10.2222A, all official updated installed, and either the driver version or software version of the adapter is 1.0.0.133 (I have a HKLM\Software\Netgear\...adapter\1.0.0.133 key in this registry). BTW, this computer is currently hooked up directly.Look for an updated driver.  See "Downloads" tab of following link:  WG111v2 54 Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter

My first guess is "WG111v2 3.4.0" is the current software installation package which contains "Win 98SE/Me driver version: 5.1308.1226.2007".

My second guess is your "1.0.0.133" is the "Utility version"; whatever that is.  The "Utility version" in the current software installation package is "1.0.0.184".  That's why I think you "may" have an old driver.

On your system, look for the Netgear WG111 device in Device Manager.  Right click on it and select "Properties" from context menu.  Select the "Driver" tab.  Note the "date".  Now selet the "Driver File Details..." button.  Should show list of driver files.  Select each one and note "Provider" and "File version" for each one.

For the files provided by Netgear, what file version does it show?  Compare that to the version number within the current software installation package.I do know how to do that stuff, you know...
It's just that the last time I updated those drivers was a couple weeks ago...but the site might have had an older version (the site of the company I got the adapter from).1.  Corrupt System File.  You might also try the "System File Checker" utility (sfc) within Windows 98SE to check for missing and/or "corrupt" system files.  You can edit its configuration to specify which directories (and subdirectories) to search (so I assume it can be used to verify integrity of third party software as well).

Should you discover a "corrupt" file, the burden is on you to determine what and/or where the lastest source is for that file.

Can be invoked from:
    "Start" -> "Run" TEXT box

or
"Start" -> "Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "System Tools" -> "System Information" > "Tools" -> "System File Checker"

2.  Safe Mode.  If there's a "Safe Mode with Networking" available within Windows 98SE, you might give that a shot.  This would start without most (if not all of your security software).  If the wireless runs fine there, then consider a conflict with the security software, or the possibility the offending software might not be the wireless.
I already tried running the SFC (from HiddenTools, so I don't need to know it's location). However, when the bar reaches 100%, Norton CrashGuard always pops up at me, so it can never really update the snapshot (as far as I know of, anyway).Where do you find SFC in "hidden tools" ? ?HiddenTools is kind of like a menu of programs which can be useful, but normally don't have a shortcut to them. I am using the Windows 98 version of it.If you're behind a home router you may "clean boot" the Windows 98 SE to see how the WG111v2 adapter PERFORMS independent of your security software or other third party software drivers.  Since Windows 98 SE does not support "Safe Mode with Networking", this would be the next best thing.

Solve : How can I add Wireless Network Connection??

Answer»

I have an older Dell desktop (from 2001) with a new hard DRIVE.  I installed Windows Millennium Edition from the Cd's that came with the computer originally.  Now I want to access the internet wirelessly, using an SMC wireless network adaptor.  I have installed it's software and can see it is running, but have no way to utilize it to connect to the internet.  On my laptop (running xp) there is an icon on the desktop: 'Wireless Network Connection' where I can VIEW available wi-fi connections in my area.  I want to be able to do the same thing on the desktop computer.  I have searched through the Control Panel but cannot find where to add wireless access...there are only modem access choices for dial-up.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.Does your router support wireless?
Or are you accessing other wireless routers? My neighbor has VERIZON fios and gave me his connection information.Okay, just making sure

Did you install the DRIVERS for the SMC in the desktop?I ran the install from the cd provided.  Drivers were not separately mentioned. Quote from: majakitty on August 24, 2009, 02:12:50 PM

I ran the install from the cd provided.  Drivers were not separately mentioned.

That sounds like you got the drivers installed too.

In network places can you run the Home Networking Wizard?I believe so, however, I am not home now.  I can try tonight.  What would be the next steps?Let me know when you get there, we'll go through it.Yes, I have the Home Networking Wizard up....Just wondering, does your adapter come with management software? I have a NetGear WG111v2 on my Windows 98SE, which has software which is the only way I can specify my WEP key, although I can CHANGE a device setting under the device manager to change the SSID.Yes, it has an icon by the clock; when I double-click that, the SMC WLAN Monitor comes up with the following tabs:  Configuration, Link Information, IP Information, Site Survey and Version Information.  The only tab I can modify info on is Configuration to select SSID and set up a profile.  The transmit rate is set to auto.  Operating Mode is set to Infrastructure (the only other choice is 802.11 AdHoc).  These settings were the default.   Site Survey allows me to see the available SSIDs in my area.  When I double click on the one I want to use, it prompts for encryption configuration info.  I entered the info under Network Key.  The Link Information tab indicates the Link Quality and Signal Strength and both are good.  From this I assume that I am connected.  However, when I open Internet Explorer, nothing.Try to connect, then type IPCONFIG /ALL and post the result hereHi there,
Check to see if your SMC Adapter is only capable of using WEP encryption (like mine does) and not WPA as your Router you are trying to connect to maybe set up for WPA etc

Please Salmon Trout, could we in the the future refrain from arguing on the fourm. As you yourself said "they are indefinitely available to the whole world", so people who read this post in the future do not want to see a bunch of people arguing. They want a post with good information and not what's beginning to happen in this post.

And for your info a ISO does not mean it has anything to do with pirated software. I can rip an ISO from any Cd I want to (including 98, XP, Vista, LINUX, Mac OS X...).

Our job as a member of this forum is to help anyone who needs help. If someone is using an illegal copy of XP and he has a software install problem we (i would at least but I do hope others would) help him/her fix it.
I am certainly against anyone using illegal software. And if anyone came here asking where to download MS DOS or something I would certainly not help. This is the kind of situation where you "don't help with piracy", not telling someone "I won't help you because your not using genuine Windows".

Solve : Migrating to a different Motherboard?

Answer»

Hello,

If you have kept up with my posts, I have built a system using some hardware from a few generations back. (Pentium 4)1.5Ghz 400MhZ 128Mb Ram Win98SE There are a few things I am not happy with, the first being the floppy drive is not reading anything. I don't think it worked from the start, since I attempted to make a boot disk when first installing windows, and it couldn't read the disk in the drive. Second, it does not play music CD's. The motherboard came as an opened box item, and I haven't heard too many good things about its brand. I suppose it may have been a prior builder's reject and have some kind of defect on it, or maybe it was damaged in shipping. Since it is difficult to obtain that same exact MOBO, I think I will resume with a new model, and I step up to 478 socket, since they are more readily available.

So, the problem is to install a new motherboard with drivers, without having to wipe the hard-drive. The question is, can I boot up the system after installing the MOBO and select a new hardware profile, for which Windows will SEARCH for all new drivers. By default it doesn't ask for anything, but I made a 2nd hardware profile for the sake of experimenting with the drivers, so that I would have one to rollback to, incase a driver would not work after reboot, and so at boot up windows asks which profile to use and there is an option to use a new profile as well.

I have read an article on this same subject in a PC magazine, a few years ago, but don't seem to have that article on-hand. It didn't have anything to do with profiles, it was even more rudimentary than that. if you build what is, in effect, a new computer using a different motherboard, you will need to do a complete new install of Windows, and if you are using an OEM edition of Windows you will find that it cannot be legally activated.
Curious why your thinking of going with a socket 478 board/build?

For the money spent you could get something way better. Maybe this is mainly to stay legacy and that's why you want to stick with early Pentium 4.

For socket 478 the strongest CPU you will find is a Pentium 4 with HT but that's only in the board supports the heavier CPU. For example I have a motherboard I got for free on a earth day recycle back in 2008 that was going on where I went to bring some junk to the local computer shop for free disposal and I saw some Pentium 4 systems stacked and I asked if I could have some. They said sure and so I grabbed 3 of the best Pentium 4 computers from the pile and out of the 3 which had issues I mixed all the good components between an ( eMachine, HP, and a Dell ) to take the good motherboard from the eMachine a Trigem Imperial 2002.xxxx swapped out its Celeron 2.0Ghz socket 478 for a 2.4Ghz socket 478 P4 that came out of a Dell Dimension 4600 and it wouldn't post with the 2.4Ghz Pentium 4. Tested the P4 in a better build I had and it wasn't a problem with the CPU, the motherboard wouldn't run on a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4. So I then saw in the HP that I grabbed that it had a 2.0Ghz Pentium 4, and so I put the 2.0Ghz Pentium 4 in and now the emachine motherboard worked properly and with the extra Cache that the Pentium 4 had vs the Celeron at the same clock. Looked online for a flash for the BIOS and none to be found to give better CPU support. PRETTY much this board maxes out on a 2.0Ghz Pentium 4 with 266Mhz DDR RAM. In the end I had a eMachine motherboard with a Dell Power Supply an extra 256MB DDR266 RAM stick from the HP to bring the RAM to 512MB DDR266, hard drive from Dell, and the Pentium 4 2.0Ghz CPU from the HP to have a working computer. I installed all this into a extra tower case I had.

*** Maybe you can find a computer shop that will give away old computers that they get as junk and you can build from this for free or inexpensively.

Otherwise I would suggest if spending money to get something better for your money. For about the same price as you would be spending for a Pentium 4 build you could get a motherboard with RAM and CPU with a Dual-Core CPU and way better performance, however curious if your going to move away from Windows 98 or not as for the OS will be a performance bottleneck not able to tap into CPU features.

Additionally a complete computer with Windows 7 or Windows 10 with a warranty could be picked up as a refurb these days for under $100 and give you far more powerful performance than the system you shared specs on. However if your running a legacy build with legacy cards and drivers all having to work around Windows 98 then you may want to stick with older hardware for compatibility reasons. However you could make a dual boot system with 98 and another more modern OS and have the best of both worlds. I haven't run Windows 98 in ages but back in the day I had a system with 98SE / Windows XP Pro dual boot. My last use of Windows 98 was in Virtual PC 2007 but GAMES didn't work there so I tombstoned that idea of playing older games in a virtual environment on a modern OS/Hardware because the virtual GPU just isn't there to support old games that really need an old video card to drive them. So I ended up building an old legacy build out of the eMachine that I mentioned above and used that for a while. However sadly the motherboard doesn't have a AGP slot and so its limited to performance of a GeForce 4 MX440 64MB PCI card which isn't the greatest but its better than the Intel Integrated 845GLThere's also XP compatibility mode as a MS download install for Win7...

XP Mode will run many legacy apps...The goal is to have a system fast enough so that it can run CAD/CAM programs without sacrificing performance. I also want to run MSDOS in real mode, so I am going with WIN98 for now. I may set up a dual boot system, and install XP. Of course I will have to buy a copy first. I think the P4 will be fast enough for that. I don't think my board supports hyper-threading, because the supported processors list doesn't include any HT models. But, it is a genuine intel and the best for a work pc. I had quad core system that would not take a parallel port card, which is why I started the whole affair. The MOBO was a cheapie, less than $100. So, you settle for something less and that's what happens. It seems like nowadays computers are all "bloatware" stuff you don't really need.
I read the system requirements for a cad PROGRAM that recommends a 500Mhz. Processor. This board has a 533Mhz system BUS, so I think the program will run well. I think if it can run the graphics demanding cad, it will handle all of my other computing needs.

Solve : Problem 3 1/2 inch floppy drive?

Answer»

Hi,  I have an old Windows 95 LAPTOP (Toshiba Satelite 220CS) whereas the 3 1/2 inch DISKETTE drive isn't working properly. The green LIGHT on the drive works (when it's processing to read the diskette) but it can't really read any diskette. I've tried several formatted and non-formatted diskettes, but none of them works. I tried TDIAGS (scanning programme) to test the diskette drive but it won't work and always gives me an error. Does anyone knows a solution? I've already screwed it open to SEE if any cables were loose, but they were all fine. It'll always give me an error when I try to format a diskette; "A:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready."

Does anyone knows a solution? THANKS in advice.

NegenuI have the same problem, and I think in my case it is the controller. I have a desktop so I can install a floppy controller on one of the PCI's. Or I may have to buy a new MOBO. I sure would like to know why the controller is not working, don't you?

Ha! Thanks for sharing that.  Reminds of the days when I had a 486 with Win 3.1.  If you have any expansions slots (ISA or PCI) in that machine, you might be able to find a video card on eBay that would yield a better display.  Cool that this worked, even though some page formatting issues due to age of browser and HTML has come a long ways since in addition to the fact that your probably on 640 x 480 resolution.

Some questions.

What Network Adapter did you USE to tie into high speed internet or is this a far easier to get working dial-up connection?

( Back in the days of Win 3.11 the networks I worked around were using BNC coax and Novell Netware and home internet access was Dial-up on a 14.4k AT&T modem with a stack of jumpers to be set pre-PnP modem. The Modern Cat5 I didnt START working with until around 1999 when the older BNC token ring networks were getting yanked in favor for the newer Cat5 at 10Mb/s and HUBS where everywhere and you had to worry about collisions etc. Networking has come a long ways and is so much nicer to manage these days. )

What driver did you use for TCP/IP support and is this a DOS 6.22 TCP/IP driver or one that was made for Win 3.x?

To date the oldest computer that I ever got ONTO the Internet with was a 386 SX 16 Mhz with 4MB 30-pin SIMM RAM, 40MB HDD on Dial up and AOL 2.5  running Windows 3.1 many many years ago. Windows 3.1 consumed about 12MB of the 40MB HDD. The 40MB HDD I pulled out of an early 286 that had the early hard drives that would take up a full 5.25 bay and the space of 2 x Modern Optical drives. They were very noisey when reading/writing data and were Seagate Brand. They required a special drive controller card that was ISA and then had 2 ribbon cables that went to them + power P connector. Prior to that I got online on Prodigy in High School around 1992, but the prodigy service network there was far different than the Internet that really took hold in 1994/1995 onwards and the boom of the late 90s.

Microsoft has a TCP/IP Driver for Windows 3.11. All it needs is a network card with a Windows Driver installed.

Technically it is for Windows for Workgroups. However if they have 256 color, they are probably using WfWG since Windows 3.1 and 3.11 as-is do not provide any generic 256 color drivers. The oldest machine's I've tried on the "modern" internet would be a Sun Ultra 5 (Running Solaris 8 ) and a Power Macintosh 8600/200 (Running MacOS 9.1), both using Netscape Navigator 4.0.  I was somewhat surprised as to how some things did actually work to a usable level.  What I also found very amusing was that several intranet sites at my university worked absolutely perfectly as they were so out of date!

I'll need to try and get one of my old Windows 3.1 machines working online but I don't currently have any suitable ISA network cards. Quote from: kbit on February 22, 2015, 09:28:40 PM

Solve : Win 95 Compatibility??

Answer»

Hi I had 3 old computers that I use for old programs and games for Win95C, Win98se, and WinXP.  I took all the hard drives out of them and got rid of the cases and other components because they got contaminated with formaldehyde which started causing problems with air quality.  I'm thinking instead of finding a computer for each operating system, to find one computer with a cpu that would be compatible with all three systems and install a hot swap tray for the hard drives.  I think I may have found one but I have a question.  I found a Dell Dimension desktop with a pentium 4 that is 1.3 ghz.  I know it will run win98se and winxp but not sure if it will run win95c.  Anyone know about this? The pentium 4 is compatible with all Windows systems.
The issue will be the chip set used on the motherboard. But even if it has a unknowns chipset, windows 95 with install a generic set of drivers. The down side is that your VGA resolution may be very limited.
This might help:

Have you looked into running virtual machines on a much more modern computer to run the old OSs?  This would usually be your best bet as you'd be working with modern, reliable hardware.  The only potential issue you may have would be if you need to connect specialised hardware to the Windows 9x machine. You saying he can just run an existing HDD in a VM ? ?

You can definitely pass a physical drive through to a VM, or you can take an image of the physical disk then boot the image on the VM from modern, faster, more reliable hard drive/ssd.

Sure it's not the best option in all cases (specialised hardware being one) but if it's just to use a couple of old applications occasionally it may be more practical than relying on an old machine and even older hard drives.Just to clarify what I posted: I'm talking about Windows 9x in my previous post! More recent versions of Windows obviously run on CPU's that run at 2.1Ghz or higher.Thanx Cameron...never knew you could simply pass thru a HDD with a pre-installed OS in a VM. Quote
Hi I had 3 old computers that I use for old programs and games for Win95C, Win98se, and WinXP.  I took all the hard drives out of them and got rid of the cases and other components because they got contaminated with formaldehyde which started causing problems with air quality.

Curious how these got contaminated with formaldehyde... were these originally in an industrial environment?

For the fact that you want to run old games on these OS's, Virtual machines dont work out too good for gaming. Speaking from own experience. I tried to get some games to work in virtual environments and most dont work, others that do work the fps is horrible. Unless your using DOSBOX which works fine for most DOS games.

Do you have any of the OS installation discs or only the drives?  ( *Situation with these drives on different hardware is that your going to have to satisfy drivers for completely different hardware. Additionally if the CPU is too different from that of the original CPU That was used when the OS was installed you could get into boot loop BSOD and other issues. ) If you knew the exact model or very similar model of computer that each drive came out of, your best bet would be to pair the drives back up with their hardware in systems that are non contaminated.

Lastly many games that were made for 95 and 98 will play fine on an older computer running XP... is there any games that you know of that you have that wont play on a 32-bit Windows XP system?

I did away with 95 many years ago and held onto using Windows 98 SE for a number of years, but I have thousands of games and many of them made for Windows 95 and 98 and they all play perfectly fine on Windows XP 32-bit. You might not need to make the Windows 95 and 98 come back to life. The only situation for needing the Windows 95 and 98 drives to run would be if they have games on them and you lost the installation discs to install the game clean to a Windows XP 32-bit build. XP also has a mode feature to allow older software that is picky with XP NT environment to run more like non-NT 95/98 for backwards compatibility. I have rarely needed to use this feature for games with XP 32-bit that were for 95/98.

If you decide on still going with removable IDE drives for one computer and your going to install all the necessary drivers for the computer hardware that you go with, you will want to make sure that the hardware completely supports Windows 95 for drivers before buying it. Look up the motherboard and see if the drivers exist for 95/98/XP. You might find yourself having to settle for a computer that is a Pentium III processor. Pentium 4's and Windows 95 I had issues with years ago. Because your requiring Windows 95 that is why I suggest a Pentium III as the fastest CPU. If you did away with 95 and went with 98/XP only then a Pentium 4 would be better performance.

Games you want to play you will want to look up the specs for the GPU. You might be able to get by with the integrated GPU for 95 and 98 games. For a Pentium III computer if it has integrated GPU you might have a GPU that can allocate 32MB Video RAM, most will be in the 4,8,16MB for integrated. If you do away with 95 and go with 98/XP only then you could go with a Pentium 4 CPU and integrated video with 64MB or more video memory.

Some older games have hardware detection and very manual sound and video configurations with direct hardware calls. If you have older games that were made for older hardware you might find that they dont work out properly on newer hardware. Example being a game I liked playing called Carmageddon which had audio issues on newer hardware. It wasnt until I installed an older SoundBlaster 16 card into the system and configured it for the soundblaster 16 card on that Pentium III system that I got the sound to work properly. The VIA chipset that the Pentium III motherboard had Carmageddon did not work with for sound. It wasnt able to use the sound that Windows was working fine with, the game was independent from the OS's audio and video drivers with direct hardware calls so the hardware had to match that of what the game was specifically designed around so i had to add an old soundblaster 16 card to a newer Pentium III.

These days hardware emulation might work for getting non soundblaster 16 cards to work as soundblaster 16. Quick google search shows that some may be out there. https://www.google.com/#q=sound+blaster+16+emulator

*If you need GPU processing power such as VooDoo Card or something like that then its best to find a video card other than integrated GPU that meets or exceeds the requirements of the game, but has driver support for the OS's you intend to use. *Note: Sometimes exceeding the hardware requirements will introduce BUGS in game execution. Games might run faster or might crash as well as might act like they are cheating (NPC targets dodging bullets "matrix like" yet you cant because the logic is running faster in bullet-time and your reaction time is only so fast etc so the NPC has the advantage which can be frustrating because game is running faster but you cant. ) This is somewhat rare to have this situation but it can happen. It was more prone for game timing to be a problem many years ago between friends with 8088 and 286 computers. A game intended for 8088 4.77Mhz run on a 286 12Mhz would run almost 2.5x faster. I have some old games from back in the day that are like PacMan intended for an 8088 4.77Mhz and they will run as fast as the CPU can run them. Nothing like a game that the minute you start the game your instantly Dead. Start the game, flash of pixel activity, and then dead. Some games the Turbo BUTTON had to even be turned off to slow the games down back in the 286 and 386 era with the ability to switch between CPU speeds of say 12Mhz and 16Mhz etc.Thank you all for all that interesting info and Thank you Dave for that dissertation on gaming and computers from the STONE age and beyond.   I don't quite go that far back but I started with an old custom tower I bought in 94 that had a 486 dx 66mhz chip and a 90mb hd with win 3.11. In order to play new games we had to compress the hard drive or unload a game so we would have room on the hard drive.   We played games like Xcom, Wolfenstein, Lords of the Realm and such and the whole thing was pretty much magical.  When 95 came out we considered it space age technology and it has been my favorite operating system since so I'll experiment with this Dell and see if it will work and if not I'll find an old system to work with.
We lived in an old mobile home for a few years that had a serious formaldehyde problem during the summer from the materials the mobile home was made of.  The computers were in the room that had the worst problem with it.  After we moved and I started using the computers again it started making me sick again (that stuff is bad) so I pulled one of them apart and cleaned it out thoroughly but it still had the problem so I pulled out the hard drives and threw the rest away.  I'm going to copy the hard drives over to other hard drives and throw the old ones away too which is a lot easier than installing win95 again.
I know 98se and XP will work great on this Dell because that is what this computer was designed for and if I have to put another one together for 95 it is really no problem.  I just ebay components until I have everything I want for it.  I did load Sim City 2000 on the XP computer and it had no problems with speed.  I loaded it on one of my fast computers awhile back and it ran so fast it was unplayable but 1.3ghz is a very playable speed for it.  I would like to know if you know the best sound cards and video cards to use in a 95 computer.  THX!  Quote
f you know the best sound cards and video cards to use in a 95 computer.  THX!
As I recall, Sound Blaster was very popular. Sound versions came with software that let you do some  good effects.
Sounds Blaster from Creative Labs was pretty much the #1 sound card going for the time of Windows 95.

As far as video cards the biggest concern back then was with video memory meeting or exceeding the game requirements. Some games needed considerable GPU processing power, but could be configured and would play ok on lesser video settings as a MEANS to not exclude game play from the majority of computer systems/customers wanting to play the games on a budget off the shelf computer. Around 1995 3dfx was what some friends would buy video cards from for top of the line at the time gaming. My one friend had the first VooDoo card and payed a mint for it to play Quake and Quake II with maximum performance. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3dfx_Interactive
I was running the ATI Rage 3D video card which was the much cheaper video card for the time, but better than whatever the motherboard had on it which may have been just a SiS (silicon graphics) 4MB, 8MB, or 16MB etc.

Hope this info helps... additionally interesting that the mobile home had a formaldehyde issue. I owned a 1973 12x64 Mobile home from 1994 to 2015 and its pretty scary that building materials in it could have been toxic like that without being aware. Bought my place for $6000 in 1994 when a guy got a divorce and needed a quick cash sale when it was worth $12000 and sold it for $2000 in 2015 after banking some money to buy a house. Roof failed and floors failed, replaced floors and roof in 2006 Gave it away pretty much at $2000 for a quick sale to get out of the mobile home park and $477 a month lot rent since I now had a $1200 a month mortgage payment. I dont miss the mobile home park at all. It was a financial trap. So easy to get in and hard to get out. Lease agreement signed pretty much required you to find someone else to take your place or else your paying lot rent or getting lawyers involved to break the lease after removing your home off the property. I thought I was going to have to pay $6800 to have it destroyed and removed from the lot and get lawyers involved in breaking the lease. But realtor that I bought house from knew of a guy who needed a place and didnt have much money and it worked out for us.

Good to hear that you got out of that toxic environment!

*Some of the video cards from 3dfx are rare and collectable and so they might come at a premium. For the Sound Card consideration, it's going to depend on specifically what you are after.

The "Diamond Monster Sound MX300" is one of the highest end cards of the time period, so it works great with Windows 95. the MX200, it's predecessor, is a good one as well. Both support Aureal 3D, an early 3-D Audio API, and the MX200 even has a daughtercard you can connect for better MIDI samples. They are effectively rebranded Aureal Vortex 2 Cards, so that could add additional selection while looking for pricing options on eBay.

The main problem is twofold: first, because they are some of the "highest-end" cards for older computer builds, they tend to fetch a tad more than one might expect on eBay. Another issue is that they have poor DOS support. (the first Vortex   (not Vortex 2) and MX200 do have Sound Blaster Pro emulation/compatibility under DOS, though)

Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold is a good option For MS-DOS games Sound Blaster support is pretty much a given, and the AWE64 is 100% compatible with the AWE32, which many games have added features for. It does require AWEUTIL.EXE, which is part of the driver set, to get General MIDI support under DOS but that works reasonably well. It also has good Windows Support.

Another excellent card is a Sound Blaster Live! Card. the only issue with that is that it was a very common "OEM" card, that would be pre-installed, and the pre-installed cards are stripped down and aren't actually SB Live cards for some reason. (My Dell Dimension 4400 had one in it and I could only ever get t he driver that was for the Dell Dimension 4400 to work; the default SB drivers for the Live! failed to install, claiming it couldn't find a Sound Blaster Live! installed), so going that route  you'll have to avoid OEM cards.

Another card I'd say to avoid would be "Creative Audio PCI". This is a rebranded Ensoniq Audio PCI, and both are incredibly basic cards. They get the job done, so they will do in a pinch and they are cheap, but if you are looking for a more "deluxe" option for the time period, it isn't this card.

For Graphics Cards you have a lot of options. You can find Cards from NVidia, ATI, Matrox, and 3DFX that will work on Windows 95. 3DFX Voodoo Cards are 3-D Accelerator only and need to run with another video card for your standard desktop display, and use a pass-through adapter. You can also install two of them for SLI configurations.

Like Dave Says, 3DFX cards are somewhat collectible now and have a cult following. Personally I think they are somewhat overrated in terms of actually making use of them, unless specifically wanting to use original hardware with a Glide-supporting game. You also need another Graphics Card anyway for the Voodoo and Voodoo 2 cards anyway.

If you want something for all those operating Systems, then something like a Radeon 9000 or Geforce 2MX/Geforce 4Ti should work well. I use an Radeon All-In-Wonder 9000 on my own Pentium 4 PC. Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 17, 2017, 05:18:04 PM

Thanks BC for that information.  I knew about 3DFX but not about Glide. So some games of that era were 3DFX and some were Glide based?Glide is the API that software/games were written against to run on 3DFX Cards. Sort of like Direct3D, OpenGL, and Vulkan today, but it only worked with cards made by 3DFX.

Also worth noting that later Voodoo cards had a 2-D card built in, so you didn't need a "companion"; but they usually aren't as powerful when used for Direct3D or OpenGL as ATI or NVidia cards.

What is a pass through adapter and how is it used?Sorry they don't use a pass-through adapter, I was imprecise.

That's a Voodoo 2. Notice how it has two Ports on the back?

You connect the output of your "normal" graphics card to the input (I think it's the black one, though I don't know), and then you connect the output of the Voodoo2 to your Monitor.

The voodoo card takes over and "blocks" the other card when being used, but otherwise allows the other card to "pass-through".Ah, that's how it works.  I never used voodoo 2.  So the Voodoo 3 and on were standalone graphics cards?I believe so, as they only have one connector. In my last Win 95 computer, I used an Nvidia FX 5200 256mb graphics card and it worked well but I never played the 3DFX era games with it.  Would those games work with the FX 5200?No. Games that are designed for 3dFX hardware use the Glide API exclusively and No other manufacturer provides any support for it. The "FX" series of cards from Nvidia are merely a series of graphics cards and have nothing to do with 3DFX, or 3DFX "compatibiility" whatsoever.

To make things more confusing, you can run Windows-based games that use the Glide API on ATI and Nvidia cards. That seems to contradict what I just SAID, but it is done using "Glide Wrapper" software; this allows the games to use the conventional Glide API functions and "think" they are running on a 3DFX card, but "translates" them to use OpenGL or Direct3D calls instead, so they work without any actual Glide Hardware.

I don't know how they did it but this guy made a utube video I saw running Carmageddon which is a 3DFX game using a Dosbox using specific commands to make it work.  Thanks for the info, I can see how all this works now.

Solve : Windows 3.1.1 VGA drivers problem?

Answer»

Hi,

hoping someone can help me

Basically motherboard has FAILED on a CLEANROOM equipment and I’ve managed to source a similar board but on BOOT it won’t get passed the graphics card drivers.
From previous knowledge I know there is a way you can tell the operating system loading to Use standard VGA settings (think you edit the system.ini FILE)

Any help or ideas be really appreciated.

BrendenFrom Our Archives...You can change Windows 3/x Setup from MS-DOS by typing "setup" from the Windows directory. From there you can change the "Display" option to VGA.

You COULD also edit system.ini as noted. You would change the "Display=" line to read "Display=VGA.DRV"

Doing it with the first method will prompt for  the setup diskette if VGA.DRV is not present in the Windows\System directory. the latter option won't show the prompt, but either way if it is not present you'll need to find the proper VGA.DRV file. (It should be present on any install, I'd expect, but stranger things have happened).

Solve : Forgotten Network / Logon password for Windows 98?

Answer»

My SON had his PC at University and has long since forgotten the network /logon password for Windows 98 he had then.  We now want to network his machine with my Mac.  Netork is not accessible becuse we don't have the password and thus can't sign in.  We don't need to ever regain access to his university network, but would like to set up a LAN with my MAc for priniting sharing and file sharing.  Any help?
Thanks You SIMPLY cancel the sign on and get into windows as Win 98 don't hold an network account.  You can do as you wish once you're in
Martin:

Once you are in Windows, you may rename the file that keeps the password:

1. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the Windows folder (most likely C:\WINDOWS).

2. Look for the file that has your son's user name and the extension .PWL (for example, if his user name is Junior, the file will be named Junior.PWL).

3. Right-click on that file and select Rename from the menu, then rename the file (for example, rename it Junior.OLD).

4. Now your son will be able to choose a new password for his user account, if he desires to do so.

Solve : Windows 98 Craches?

Answer»

I have a pc using Windows 98, K6 II 500 MHz, RAM 256 MB, and one soft created in Clipper for DOS.  So I created an icon at the desktop and I can click and use the soft normally, but when I quit this soft and go back to Windows, it crashes( I don´t know this word in English ) and I have to turn it off because nothing functions anymore.  Do you know something
to do to solve this problem ??  What do I have to do ??  Please.

Thanks.

has this been a problem since you installed the clipper or just recent?Go into the Add/Remove program and uninstall that program and everything should be back to normal. If not maybe you'll need to reinstall your OS.It is happening since I installed Windows 98SE.I'm a windows 98 user and I notice that sometimes there are pauses which I am trying to fix. As for your problem what applications do you attempt to run when it crashes? By the WAY, Check for errors and defragment if you can. It might take a while. Also don't jhave to many taskbar. There isn´t any soft at the task bar.  I have enough memory, processor.  Maybe I have to CHANGE something in the autoexec.bat, config.sys ??  But what do I have to change ??most crashes are caused by files not being understood properly??one of many REASONS>>..but you should read more..>>>.http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/f/8/f8i/pedon/download.html

and the command >edit .....in the dos prompt is a valuable tool;)Betinho:

The correct phrase in English (if you are STILL curious) is "the computer hangs" or "the computer fails to respond" but crashes gets the point ACROSS just fine.

Two questions:

Do you receive any error messages? (if you do, then try to reproduce the problem and write the exact message down, then let us know what it says).

Have you checked the Web site of the maker of the Clipper program for a software patch to fix the problem that you may download and install? (if the site still exists, and this was a common problem with Windows 98 SE, they probably have the patch available).

Solve : Windows '98 won't shut down?

Answer»

Need help in shutting down my computer.  I have windows 1998.  Everytime I go to shut down it gives me a message that the program is not responding. I have to "End Task" then it gives me the windows screen but does not want to shut down the computer.  I have to pull out the BATTERY pack and unplug the computer.

P.S. this is a LAPTOP computer.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. What is the task name?To Kablam,

Thanks for replying so quickly.....I'm not very well versed in computers.  Could you tell me what you mean by the task name?Joshe:

I think Kablam is asking if the error message gives the name of the program that is not shutting down.  Also, please see my answer to your other post.

One suggestion: It's probably a good IDEA to just leave replies to one of the posts as two posts will create confusion.

Solve : Windows 98 won't run?

Answer»

Unable to GET Windows 98 to run. Everything was fine until I shut down, normally, and the machine tried to restart. Now, I  get "cannot find device files MpFireWl.VxD and MpfBocks.VxD" messages upon boot-up. I have no idea what these are. By pushing "any key to continue", I get to the windows log-in box (no password normally required; however, I normally get the network log-in window before the Windows log-in, but don't get it now), click cancel as I usually do, but then get a windows explorer error message and a "PERFORMED illegal operation, system must close" message.

I've reloaded Windows and upon first boot up after reload get system file errors related to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DDEML.DLL; C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\joy.cpl; C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHELL.DLL; C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mcicda.drv; and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINASPI.DLL

After clicking OK, I get to the same windows log-in window and the same Windows Explorer error message.

I've tried starting in safe mode and the same results occur.

APPRECIATE any help, suggestons, ideas. Thanks.

Can you boot into safe mode?'

Quote

VxD stands for Virtual Device Driver. It is related to hardware drivers and these errors often seem to occur in Windows 98 when drivers or hardware have not been properly removed and/or installed. The same sequence of events occurs if I try booting in safe mode.

I have not tried to install or remove hardware.

I am able to start the machine using a different Win 98 OS on a different drive, which alows me access to the drive that I normally boot on and, thus, the OS that is giving me problems. Any suggestions on how to attack the problem from this direction? What I would try is to replace the corrupt/missing files with the ones from the proper Windows 98 installation.

However, there is no quarantee that this will work, because the files (Especially the .drv and .DvX) may be installation specific. But considering the fact that you have both operating systems on the same type of the machine, they may be identical?I've tried reloading windows on the problem drive - see results noted in original post.

The two win 98 installations on this machine are not the same, and I would like to continue to run the system on the first (now problematic) version. Quote

From the QUOTED text above I assumed you had two Hard Disk Drives in the same computer.

Question:

Is formatting your Hard Disk Drive and reinstalling Windows 98 an option?I do have two hard disk drives on the computer. 1 40gb and 1 2gb. The machine is now running on the smaller.

I could reformat the original main drive, but only if I can save everything on it (except windows), which I haven't yet been able to figure out how to do. Suggestions?

I also have a copy of XP that I could install... Quote
I could reformat the original main drive, but only if I can save everything on it (except windows), which I haven't yet been able to figure out how to do. Suggestions?

Suggestion:

1. Organize all files you wish to keep
-- Preferably in one folder
2. Remove all files that you do not wish to keep
-- Be certain to remove hidden files as well
3. Reinstall Windows 98.
-- Install Windows XP if your system specifications allow it.

This does not reach the same result as REFORMATING your Hard Disk Drive would, but it will give you a better chance to create back-ups of your [important] files and then follow my suggestion below:

Suggestion:

You would do wise as to create seperate partition for only your Operating System. You claimed to have reloaded Windows 98. From this I assumed that you had overwritten the original installation of Windows 98 without first removing [hidden] system files. Is this correct?correct. how do i remove hidden system files, and which system files would i need to remove? Quote

1, how do i remove hidden system files.
2.which system files would i need to remove?

1. You have to set Windows 98 to display hidden files.
-- See this article for instructions on how to do so.

2. Assuming that you have now sorted all files you want to keep and placed them inside one folder, it is safe to remove all other files stored on the 40GB Hard Disk Drive.
-- By removing all (hidden) files you will make certain that when you reinstall Windows 98, it will not (attempt) to make use of obsolete files.

1. You have to set Windows 98 to display hidden files.
-- See this article for instructions on how to do so.

Which article?

2. I really want to save everything except the win 98 OS on that drive. Will it allow me to do so, and then install a new win 98 (or XP)? Quote

1. this  is a clickable hyperlink.

2. Then you will have to remove the system files and everything that is not related to what you wish to keep on your Hard Disk Drive. Once you have done so, install either Windows 98 or Windows XP. However, I strongly recommend that you reformat the Hard Disk Drive after having made back-ups and do as I suggested in a previous post.

Solve : Win 98 freezes at shutdown?

Answer»

I've checked this forum and done quite a bit of research but here's the problem. My brother runs an older style Pentium computer with no connection to the internet. He started to run a "Band in the Box" program and his computer freezes on shutdown. I've done ctrl-alt-del but the only thing running is Explorer and Systray. If he doesn't run the Band in a Box program, he doesn't have a problem shutting down. I'm going to run a clean registry program, anti-virus, spyware program just in case there's something left over from the previous owner. I'm even considering installing the Win98 Shutdown PATCH. Any suggestions on what else I can try?Run your  clean registry program, anti-virus, spyware program. It can't hurt. The Win98 shutdown patch was specific for CERTAIN circumstances.

Since this is a previously owned machine, the best solution would be to format and reload an OS.

Good luck.  I did reload the os last September but I didn't format. I cleaned the registery, and scanned for viruses and trojans which proved negative. It's still freezing on shutdown but only after I use a certain musical program. Do you SUPPOSE format will help? How much RAM is installed in the computer? Enough to handle the program? Processor?

Solve : Windows 3.1 and 98?

Answer»

I have successfully gotten Windows 3.1 to run with Windows 98 installed. I just have to restart in DOS mode. The only problem is that it will only run in standard mode. WHENEVER I try to run it in 386-enhanced mode, I get an error saying I have an incompatable version of DOS (I figured something like that would happen). Any ideas on how to fix this?

I had the Windows 3.1 disks and one day got brave enough to try to install it. I did, and it worked.Windows 3.11 was a little bit more stable then Windows 3.1

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 won't WORK with Windows 98 (because it only runs in 386-enhanced mode) but Windows 3.11 will. There is little visible difference between Windows 3.1 and 3.11, in fact even the splash screen still says Windows 3.1Much obliged. I am looking into ORDERING Windows 3.11 on 9 diskettes. See if I can get it to work as well.Keep in mind that you can only install it with Windows 95 or 98. ANYTHING newer than that doesn't support real mode DOS, Because Windows 3.x is more of a DOS shell than an OS. I have figured out the best way to get it to work, so just ask for instructions and I will give you some.

Solve : Transfering files from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP?

Answer»

:'(I bought  a dell imension 4700 that runs xp. i need the files from my old COMPUTER which is a V2 premier that runs 98 SE. i bought a null modem serial cable(RS-232) hooked it up to the only 9 pin plug in the back of both of my comps started the files and settings transfer wizard, but when i got to the page where it sais please wait while the wizard connects to the other computer all they did was keep looking for each other. they did not connect to each other. both computers just kept looking for each other. i let it run from 2:30-7:00 STILL nothing. if there is a problem with doing this with 98 SE then is there any way i can upgrade my old computer to a newer version of windows with out losing any of my files??? I don't have a floppy drive on my new computer, and no cd BURNER on my old computer. any help would be appreciated. Thanks.Try using HyperTerminal on each machine. I believe its installed on both XP and Win98. (CHECK in Accessories-->Communications section)

HyperTerminal is the program that will do the transferring.

Good luck.   :(Didn't find anything that said HyperTerminal in the comunications section on either computer. Do I have to do some thing to enable this on my computer or something? Thanks ahead of time. I really apreciate the help.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/crawford_november12.mspx

or there is this>http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/dccmain.htmlIf your xp is using NTFS file system (it can use either FAT or NTFS) then it may not recognize the FAT files that are on your 98. All I can say is, start over, install xp again and this time when it asks you whether to use NTFS or FAT, choose FAT. Maybe then they will be able to see each other. Hope this helps. You may need to install Hyper TERMINAL through the Software menu in the Control Panel. The Windows 98 CD-ROM will be required to do so.It's a lot easier to transfer files with one of these:
Just temporarily transplant the OLD harddrive as a new slave IDE in the new pc. XP will read that IDE and you could copy old data to your hearts delight.

Solve : Install Windows 98SE without a floppy drive????

Answer»

Hi, I bought a computer with windows Xp already installed on it. I want to reformat the har drive and install windows 98se but i don't have a floppy drive. i heard some thing about using a bootable CD ROM. how would i make a bootable cd rom and then how would i go about installing windows 98se this way? I'm not very computer litterate so i really need some help here. any help would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks in advance You can use Windows 98SE as a boot CD-ROM.

The only problem you may run into is that it will want to create a Boot Disk before the installation of Windows 98SE. I believe that you can simply cancel this process before it has started.

In order to use the Windows 98SE CD-ROM as a Boot disk you may have to take the following actions:

1. Set the first boot device to CD-ROM player
-- This can be done via your BIOS.
2. Select Boot from CD-ROM when asked to.
The full version of Windows 98 doesn't even ask you to make a startup disk. The idea behind this is that your hard drive will usually be empty anyway, so you wouldn't be able to start from it even if setup did mess up. The whole point of startup disks is to be able to start your computer if setup messes up.I remmember TINKERING with Windows 98 and bootable CDs. If remember it right and not hoping to confuse it with Windows ME, is that Windows 98SE is a bootable cd already. (original microsft make) You would simply select Run Setup from the DOS MENU once you have booted from the CD.Thanks a lot. I really appreciate every ones help.

Yes I have 2 in computors years they must be geriatrics, one around circa 98 other maybe 96.  My biggest prob. or complaint is I cant back up my data, cant load any hardware without having the Win 98 CD, which I never have had, and god forbid not if but when I have a harddrive crash  So I might be better off just getting the 98 cd and leaving it at that.
TO do a simple back up......make a boot floppy.....and if you have a problem either use the f5/f8 SAFE mode....or load the boot floppy at the A:\>  type scanreg/restore

Even more is you need it>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-gb;835834

with these two together......violla......winxp/longhorn or whatever you wish.....You can install Windows XP Home/Professional upgrade without having to install Windows 98. However, you will always be dependant on Windows 98 to verify that you are allowed to install Windows XP. It will ASK for the Windows 98 CD during installation.

Other than that, it is the same operating system.

Solve : Reinstal Windows 98?

Answer»

I am trying to reinstall windows 98 on an older machine so that I can donate it to some poorer people.  I have followed many differnet instructions all which include booting from a disk then formatting the c DRIVE and then syping setup and the 'E:' prompt.  E is the letter of my CD drive where the windows 98 cd is located. The setup will not run but insted the computer says that windows is reuqired.  Well that is what I am trying to install.  Please help!  Thank you!Have you TIRED the start up disk? It is a floppy that loads your computer into dos mode..
www.bootdisk.com

Or if you did that and Windows wont install try
Enter System Setup and look for Boot Sequence
the regular default should be A, C, SCSI <_ Change it so it becomes CDROM, A, C,

If not then re ERASE the hard drive and partion it.
www.killdisk.comI had already done the start up disk but made a new one using that website www.bootdisk.com to be sure.  my boot sequence was also in the correct order.  I ran the program from www.killdisk.com and I am still at the same place.  My computer boots up to the A: prompt with the boot disk but when I try to install windows 98 from the CD I get nowhere.  If I try to run the cd from the E: drive (what my cd drive is named) I get the error 'this program requires microsoft windows'.  I get this error regardless if i use the setup or setup.exe command at the E: prompt.  If I copy the contents of the CD to the C: drive into a win98 directory I created and try to install from the c:\win98 prompt and regardless if I use the setup or setup.exe command nothing happens.  I just get another c:\win98 prompt. but no install.  Any other ideas?

Thanks again!Do you have a full genuine win98 install disk?
Are you sure about E:?I would not mess around with boot FLOPPIES.....i would go into the bios and change the boot sequence......to boot from cdrom drive.......what is the make of this pc?It is a full win98 CD as well as I am sure that it is E: as my CD drive because if I do the DIR command at the E: prompt I get a list of the contents of the CD.

In addition, the boot sequence is set to CD as the first to boot but the machine does not boot to the WIN98 CD for some reason.

Any more ideas?  Thanks again!
Don't go to the E: prompt.  At the A: prompt enter E:\setup

Don't know if it will help.

Solve : Start up conflicts with Windows 98 and XP?

Some time ago I tried to install WindowsXP on a computer that already had Windows 98. It wouldn't LET me finish the set up, and I finally GAVE up and removed all the files I could find that WENT with the XP. Now when I boot up, it asks me " Which operating system I want to choose to run.......Windows XP set up, or Windows 98".........If I choose Windows 98, I can continue to log onto the computer normally. If I choose Windows XP set up, it says that a file" system32\hal.dll is missing and needs to be installed..........

Where can I go to install the missing file, or how can I remove the XP from my startup altogether. I tried to reformat the hard drive and it won't let me do that even..........keeps saying " Insufficient Memory".

Solve : Installing Windows98 with swappable cd/floppy driv?

Answer»

Hi, I'm trying to re-install Windows98 and I'm stumped by the FOLLOWING:

My computer is a Dell labtop that can use EITHER a cdrom or a floppy drive, but not both at the same time.  You have to pull one out and replace it with the other.

I already cleaned out the C:\ drive.

When I boot up with the Windows startup disk, using the floppy drive, the driver for the cdrom drive fails because the cdrom drive is not there.

But then there is no way to use the cdrom drive to install Windows.

With my limited knowledge of Dos, I tried copying all the files from the startup disk onto the C:\ drive and then restarting the computer with the cdrom drive in place, but I still get a message saying invalid startup disk.

Any suggestions?
Hold down the f1/f2 on boot .....>>>bios setup screen>. now change the boot sequence to boot from cdrom drive.....save and exit.....load the win98 disk.. now at the ..d:\>win98 setup...or with the boot floppy

A:\>SYS C:Boot directly from the Windows 98 CD-ROM by setting the CD-ROM drive as the first boot device.

Thanks for the suggestion, I really appreciate your help.  I tried going into setup, but I am unable to change any of the fields, not even the date and time.  I'm sure this was not the case last time I entered setup.  What ELSE can I do? Quote

but I am unable to change any of the fields, not even the date and time.

I assume that you are unable to use the mouse?

If such is the case, then I SUGGEST that you use the tab key to select the button/option you wish and spacebar to confirm.
what happens in you type time   after the dos  prompt..... also type dir.......what is listed.....Hi,
My problem is that all of my setup options are locked and can not be changed.  It is true that my mouse is not working, but I am familiar with using the tab to GO places.  When I tab to any field in any page of setup, or use the up/down arrows to get there, and then try to use the left or right arrows to make a change, nothing happens.

I haven't used this labtob in over a year.  In the past I have been able to make changes in the setup options.

- BenBy the way, to follow up on Merlin's question, when I type DIR at the dos prompt I get a list of files on the A:\ drive.

When I type TIME at the dos prompt I get a time that bears no relation to the actual time in this part of the world.

phone line supliers, and I don't remember what software i had. as far as i know it was all deleted from that computer.Did you also remove the dial up entries under the Modem SECTION in the configuration menu?

Do I have to uninstall Win98 before loading WinXP?  I wish to transfer my Win98 files to WinXP?   Do I have to back-up to CD, or is there a feature where this can be done AUTOMATICALLY whilst installing XP?

Any advice would be much appreciated.  antje.Hello Angie, before anyone can advise you properly please do this compatability test for XP: XP Compatability Test

Knowing the Make and Model, amount of RAM, processor, and drive size of your computer would be invaluable.

XP needs 512 Mb, or more, RAM to run well. and is better being CLEAN installed on a freshly partitioned and formatted drive.installing xp over 98 will not work. do a complete back up. make boot disk, clear hard drive reformat the drive.there are plenty of sites on line just google it.you could do this>>http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/meandxp.mspx

and you leave your win98 files intact......and also if you play or use old SOFTWARE games......you still have you old system and if you get FEDUP with winxp you can uninstall it leaving your old o/s intact......when you load the winxp disk ......it will ask you what you wish to do?? Quote

If you have bought an upgrade version of Windows XP, you will be prompted to upgrade.

I urge you to first do a compatability check to see if your hardware can indeed support Windows XP.

Should you change your mind during the upgrade (And only during the upgrade) it will automatically revert back to the ORIGINAL settings and leave Windows 98 intact.

However; if you have bought an OEM or full version of Windows XP you will have to reformat your HDD before installing Windows XP.

Many thanks for these messages,  this has helped a lot. Super to know that there are people out there who one can turn to!  Antje. This will show you what happens when winxp loads

Solve : Windows 98se volume prob.?

Answer»

I'm not sure how long it's been gone, but it's been awhile.  The little volume icon, that is usually next to the clock disappeared awhile back, and I can seem to GET it to come back.  I tried to uninstall, and reinstall it from control panel\add-remove\setup, and it didn't do any good.  I can adjust the volume settings from multi meadia in the control panel, but that's it.You may need to reinstall your soundcard drivers.

Is your audio still fully functioning?Sorry,   duh, I just FIGURED it out.  I just needed to put a CHECK in the check box that says display volume control in TASK bar.  Sorry to have bothered you.I had no idea you could hide that icon. Where is the option in Windows 98?Start\Settings\Control Panel\Multimedia, then just above the OK, CANCEL, and APPLY buttons, to the left there are two check BOXES.  It's the bottom check box.Cheers. I hope I can remember, no Windows 98 computer connected at the time of this writing.

Solve : Network Properties Not Working - 98SE?

Answer»

While trying to change a network CARD I found that my Network properties applet no longer works properly.

"Remove"ing or checking an item's "Properties" works fine, but clicking on "add" and trying to add a "Protocol" for an adapter returns absolutely nothing. Ditto so I've found for "Client" and "Service". Adding an "Adapter" brings up an applet to add a device, but that's the only one of the four options that does work.

For the moment I've removed the new NIC and placed the old one back in getting everything working by restoring yesterday's registry backup.

Is there a way to get this applet working again or reinstalling Windows' networking WITHOUT doing a complete reinstallation of Windows itself?

Check device manager and see if the new nic is properly INSTALLED. It might require different driver. If you have slots available you can install more than one nic.Dix:

When you put the NIC in the slot and start the computer, does Windows indicate it finds and installs the new hardware successfully or does it indicate that it could not find a software driver and asks you to provide the driver?
Hi Doc,

Windows picks up the card just fine...  & adds the card as hardware and installs the drivers... the card appears in the network properties as being installed (and FUNCTIONING properly according to the hardware manager) it's trying to configure the card that's the problem....

Open Network Properties....

Click "add"...

Pick your poison... highlight "client" & click "add" (or having highlighted the card previously, click "protocol")

and.....

nothing...

At this point there should be a new option window that appears listing options like "Client for Microsoft Networks" / "Client for Novell Network" / etc. (or in the case of the latter "TCP/IP" / NetBEUI / etc)

I've tried copying a fresh copy of "NETCPL.CPL" off the CD but that didn't solve the problem... whatever the process is that the network properties control panel hands off to when adding networking componants other than hardware has obviously gone south.

Click on the cards properties and select advance/bindings. Can you add TCP/IP? If yes, you will see it listed again with TCP/IP added. Click properties on the added entry and see if protocols are then available. The trick is when you remove anything from the device manager is......reboot pc and then SHUTDOWN .....this clear the irqs...and the list....otherwise >>.you may find you will end up with loads of entrys...and windows a bit confused.....Did that Merlin...

& No 2K... the bindings field is emptyWhat internet explorer version have you got?? i guess you are saying that the network box is grayed out? yes/no......and you have not got any options to set up network?.......if this is the case....load the win98se cd install disk......now chose the browse option.....click the add ons folder.....then click the pws folder......now scroll down the list till you cross the regsvr32 icon.........next to it is one called Setup.*...if you  clicked this icon*it will re-install win98se with no file loss........saves messing about copying /extacting files.......

Yeah, I have been uninstalling some programs that are on the computer using the keyboard. I tried running AVG, but it said that it was installed incorrectly, so that didnt WORK. The only other form of protection that is installed on this computer is SpyBot.... so what the heck, IM running it now

I deleted several games and one card making program and tried to boot the computer again and it still wouldnt work... from this point I rebooted in Safe mode and RAN a Disk Clean up and tried to run a Disk Defrag, but some files were damaged. It said to run the Scan Disk program, which I did, but the thing kept starting over and over again. I dont know what to do!
Ugh... this mouse thing is getting annoyingCan you not remove the mouse entry from DEVICE Manager to allow for redetection?Bad ramsticks......use the one stick.......the original one!
