Hi Everyone,

My friend has just bought a Panasonic DVD Re-Writer which he has tried to install on a Windows 98 PC. He can view DVD's ok, but can't write to the DVD.

Is it possible to write to DVD's on Windows 98? If so, how can he RESOLVE this problem.

The second edition of 98 had fixes for BUGS in the OS and a few added features.

Not SURE, but an upgrade to XP Home MAY be just $100.00 (USD).  In my opinion, XP combines the best features of Windows 2000 and Windows 98 SE and Me in one OS.

I am trying to get broadband installed on my computer and have to get a network CARD installed.  I am told I can get one for about £10 but how do you fit them?  Will I need to get a professional to do it?  Any help would be appreciated

CheersIt is very simple. You do not have to be an expert if you follow these steps:
1. Disconnect the computer from the power grid
2.  Take precautions against Electro-static discharge
- LEARN more about ESD here
3. Take the Network Interface Card out of the packaging material
4.Open the system case
- If you have not yet followed Step 1 and 2, do so now!
5. Look for WHITE slots where cards are sticking out (Assuming it is a PCI card)
6. Lay the computer on its side with the manboard facing in your direction
7. Take the PCI card, place it into the slot and push with both hands until it is firmly seated. Do not EXERCISE too much force, as it is fragile equipment.
8. Use the screw to fasten the PCI bracket.

Close your system case and power on the computer. You can stick the network cable in and out whenever you please, but it may be wise to do so when the computer is still powered down.

The card should be autodetected by Windows, but you may need to install drivers which came on the CD or diskette which should have been given with the NIC. There is also a chance that Windows will auto install the drivers and you need not bother.currys/dabs/scanuk and load others that have them:

I RECENTLY found  laptop with windows 95 on - and I'm working on trying to upgrade it. I installed service pack one - but I wasn't sure where to locate the download to make it 4.00.950c instead of a. (I couldn't find this on the microsoft website

I also DOWNLOADED a programme (a very basic text adventure) which wont run because it can't find MSVBVM60.DLL - I subsequently copied it from my xp computer. I couldn't see a file for System32 in my windows folder on the 95 computer (which is where it was located on my XP version) - and combinations of putting it in windows folder, system folder and making a system32 folder had no effect. Putting it in the folder of the application itself DID work - but it then couldn't work because 'the msvbvm60.dll file is linked to missing export oleaut32.dll:421' - My subsequent attempts to  fix this - by basically repeating the above steps with both files (msv.. and olea...) - have been unsucsessful. (application not functioning). I am now stuck. It works fine on my xp computer.Do yourself a big favour, at the very LEAST buy win98se from the $2 shop.Reformat and reinstall. I can't upgrade anyhow - 98 requires a cd and I only have a floppy drive And if I was gonna upgrade my system I'd need to upgrade the HD and RAM and I'd be talking serious money - which I can't afford atm...

The story so far, Been running 98SE on a 6gig drive for years, I acquired a larger hard drive 25gig & transferred all data to it, all fine.

Get 2K drivers for all hardware etc, attempt overwrite upgrade, failed miserably.

Decide to partition Drive0 25gig c:\fat32 for 98 oper d:\ntfs for 2k oper g:\ntfs for 2k backup

2K setup offered the option to dual boot the 2 systems I chose that, setup, update all to latest service pack4 and all other updates, 2K is running great.

I need now to remove 98 and get shot of dual boot. I find that after following Microsoft instructions to remove 98

Deleted c:\windows, went to edit boot.ini  I havent got such a file, except in D:\prog files\powerquest\ partitionmagic 7.0 (I doubt if this is the file they are refering to) anyway i did place rem in front of c:\="Microsoft windows" made no difference

I see this file refers to this process but fear it's a copy made by p'quest??

How can I stop the dual boot & get 2k to be the primary oper sys? Tried setting c: inactive d: active, but machine won't boot. Can I delete partiion C, will D become C or will all my 2k app's go up the swanny with incorrect paths etc.

Copied editted version of boot.ini to c: drive, (must have deleted it somehow? Or was it windows?? (Not normally that careless))

It does now boot DIRECTLY to 2K.  I want to put 2K on the first drive C: Can I simply delete the C: partition & D: will become C: or am I looking at a whole lot of trouble? Will the machine be able to boot? Will the paths of apps I've put on 2K point to the right files. I'm completely green when it comes to the boot process etc!! I don't like to have to have an extra partition in order to boot.

Hope you can help me as I'm stuck.

I can not START my COMPUTER because Illegal operation due to page fault.  I tried to start in safe MODE but still it will not start.

My sister has Outlook 98

She has two separate email accounts.

When she tries to create a new message, there is no from LINE with a pulldown allowing her to choose which email ADDRESS to use as the REPLY to.

We can't find out how to make it appear and have tried everything.   Every other version of Outlook and Outlook Express seem to have this FEATURE and there is no PROBLEM.   So of course, the one she has doesn't have it.

Something - probably malware - has provided my PC with several false Desktop folders.  I have managed to get rid of all but one.  Another will delete, but keeps reappearing each time I reboot, and I have to delete it again.

The one which I can't delete gives the error message that it is a "system folder" required by Windows.  It is an EXTRA system folder, and I want that puppy gone!

Originally these false Desktop folders appeared in the Windows\All Users and Windows\Profiles\{my logon name} folders.  At least one of them had some of my desktop items on it.  Those deleted nicely without causing any problems.  The empty folder on the one which won't delete still presents me with all my proper ICONS, just as though they were still in that folder.

On booting up, Windows is using the proper desktop.  Even then, though, Windows still refuses to delete this false desktop folder.  Another one, which I deleted earlier, reappears with each bootup, and must be deleted anew, but doesn't seem to be causing any other problems that I can see.  I have moved these folders, and they MOVE without protest.  I've renamed them, also with no difficulty.  But one keeps reappearing after deletion, and the other will not delete at all, no matter what I do.

Whenever I type my Microsoft Networking logon, my customized desktop reverts to an older version, probably COMING from the false - and supposedly empty - folder.

It is strange, too, because the folder is empty when I open it, yet when Windows decides to start using it, all of my icons are still there.  The colors are different - displaying my old preferences - and sometimes functionality is affected, too.  Sometimes it can't open zip files, for example, but other times it can. The icons are all there on my screen, but arranged very differently.

None of the Desktop folders (including the proper one) says it is a system folder on the property sheet.  Shouldn't it be marked as such if it truly IS a system folder?  Other system folders, like Favorites, are properly marked as such.  Why aren't ANY of these "Desktop" folders so marked, including the real one?  I can't mark the proper one as a system folder, because the "system" box is obscured on all of these folders, and can't be clicked.  It's the only legitimate system folder which is like that.

I've used Win98SE for years, and just did a complete format of C a few weeks ago.  I don't want to do it again!  All my patches and stuff are installed properly.

I'm currently trying to unearth the malware.  My question here is how can I delete this stubborn system folder which is causing me problems?  Is there a DOS command I can use?  I know nothing of DOS commands to speak of.

In other forums I am asking for help to identify which specific malware does this to people's PCs.  Any clues would save me a bunch of scanning.

Are you certain the folder is false? Your operating system may have become damaged and created two desktop folders.

Do you have more than one account?Faster:

1. Press F8 while computer is booting.

2. Choose the option to boot to DOS.

3. Use DOS commands to delete the contents of the folder and to delete the folder.

DocThank you for replying.  I do not have more than one account.  Since I recently formatted C, I hardly think I've had the time to cause damage to windows.  Nor have I had the time yet to install all the scanners, but I do have AVG Free running since the reformat.  I also have Adaware, PCShredder, HijackThis, and others, but haven't installed them yet.  That'll be done.  But scanning now isn't going to address the problem I've GOT.  The horse is already out of the barn.

I am at the moment more concerned with GETTING rid of the extra Desktop folders.  One person responding said to go into pure DOS and delete from there.  I don't know how!  I'm a DOS ignoramus.  Can someone please tell me the precise command line to type?  I know how to type the path, but don't know how to type the command to delete the folder.

Can I please have that command?  It might do the trick.

When turning off the computer I CLICKED the "restart in MS DOS mode".  Now, it STARTS and brings me to a c:windows prompt only.  I rebooted and hit F8 to get to the dos prompts and I 1ST chose start in Normal mode which brought me right back to the c:windows prompt. So I re-booted again and chose the start in safe mode which I was successful in doing.  If I shut down, or restart it automatically TAKES me back to the c:windows prompt.  I can't get it out of the DOS mode or safe mode.  When in safe mode, Safe Mode is in all 4 corners of the screen...HELP!!!  I was only trying to get to a dos prompt and put passwork protection on my computer and now this!!Do the opposite of this:

i recently reformatted and reinstalled windows on an old computer.  having done this successfully i ran it  for the first time to discover that the resolution had been set to 640 x 480. i thought this was a SIMPLE problem, but it seem that i cant change it. when i looked in PROPERTIES - settings there is only one resolution - 640 x 480 and only 16 colours or 2 colours. i updated directx but it was no help. any advice would be appreciated. thanks.You need Win98 DRIVERS for your video card.erm..when i say old....not only do i not know what video card it has, but im not absolutely sure whether it has one or not Install videocard drivers.

Computer gives error won't boot up.  When I use my start up DISK to scan for ERRORS I get the response "invalid long FILENAME".  System then tells me it can't repair the problem and that I should use Scandisk for Windows, but I can't load Windows!!!!  Any suggestions on how to find and remove the bad file?

This afternoon, I had left my computer running upstairs while I attended to things downstaris. I went back upstairs to attend to something and heard the familiar "restarting" beep... curious, Iwent to check it out, only to FIND it running through scan disk... it got to about 15% and autiatically restarted the computer again... it did this 2 or 3 times, and then the screen went black, but the monitor BUTTON blinking, like it does when you still have the monitor on after shutting down the computer.

Now I can't get it to respond at all.  I press the power button, nothing happens. I press reset, nothing happens.  I turned it off by the switch in the back, let it sit for a while, turned it ack on, and pushed the power button... the fan turns on and it SOUNDS as if it's turning on, but still the "monitor is working, check yor computer and cable" message on the screen.... and no change after letting it go for a while.  The fan only turns off if I turn off the switch in the back.

Any ideas?  I haven't INSTALLED any software or even downloaded anything in quite a while... this is an "All of a sudden" thing that I can't seem to solve.

Any help would be appreciated.

 Power supplies are less than $50.00 (USD) to replace.  

Today when I started to computer the icons were at least 3X the size they usually are and the graphics on my wallpaper and online where very grainy.  I did GET an error message on startup (once out of the 3 times I RESTARTED).  It was "there is a problem with your display settings.  The adapter type is incorrect or the current settings do not work with your hardware".   I reset the display settings and it helped a bit, but things still aren't great.   I have no idea what this means.  I would appreciate any suggestions.Videocard drivers need reinstalling.

Is that the same as the normal W98 boot floppy - I've got that one... I was going to run FDisk and Format it again with that, rather than the XPPro disc.why's that message with download been deleted?Let me guess: Merlin posted a message and removed it.

Don't worry, you'll get used to it.Maybe your BIOS doesn't support booting from the CD. Some older BIOS's won't allow for this.

If there isn't an update for your BIOS you can use this BIOS BOOTDISK

Well it must do... as I mentioned, I installed Win98 normally the day before all this happened...

(actually from pressing F3 on those blue setup screens; going to "D:/WIN98>" and typing setup; no problem)

...but this time... nowt.

I'm going to follow previous advice in this thread to do Fdisk and Format with the boot floppy and see how that goes (..just need to wait for the nipper to get tucked in to bed!)

There are basically two ways to format a primary partition, you can either make it bootable by copying system files and making the drive bootable. (this is only for your active primary, when you set it active FDISK writes the boot program to the Master Boot RECORD MBR), or you can let the operating system installation take care of that. I generally just let Windows setup handle that, for a super clean install. To do this, type from the A: prompt while booted with your startup disk:

My older laptop recently died.  I've been trying to reinstall Windows 98SE and have found it impossible.  My laptop has swappable Floppy DISK/CD Rom bays (is that RIGHT?), so there's no way for me to boot from the Win 98 boot disk, and then install from the cd rom.  PLEASE HELP!

I'm trying to ressurect an older Gateway 266 using Windows 98 (1st edition). It boots up OK but locks up during boot up's final phases to the point where the mouse cursor is just an hour glass. It appears that the computer is waiting for something that is not there, probably part of NORTON Systemworks which aborted during the upgrade from 2003 to 2004.

In booting up in Safe MODE where I do not have mouse capabilities, I can press the "Start" key and run msconfig and get to "Startup" by using the keypad's ARROW keys. But I cannot get into the startup programs to delete them with the arrow keys, and the mouse won't work in Safe Mode.

Questions: How can I get mouse control in Safe Mode?
Is there any other way to uncheck some of the Startup programs? Or does anyone have any other SUGGESTIONS?

Any standard PS2 or serial mouse should work in safe mode. Any special drivers won't load. You could try the step-by-step loading and only allow windows to load its drivers.Try using the Tab key along with the arrow pads to navigate.

I have an old cd, I found a few weeks ago.
I want to install it onto a, let's say, 10 gb FAT32 partition.
I have XP MEDIA Center Edition 2005 installed.
3GHz, P4 HT, 160gb hard drive, dvd-rw/cd-rw combo, dvd-rom drive, 512mb RAM. Would this be a reasonable thing to do?
And also, how would I install it using GRUB?I am using Win Xp with 128 mB RAM

Darn, I don't have a floppy drive anywhere.Wait a minute. Why you need to use GRUB  to install Win 98 over Xp. You can do it in normal way. Insert disk and install.
You GENERALLY use GRUB for two different OS e.g. Linux and Windows.No, I don't want to install 98 over XP. I want to dual boot XP and 98 without having to reinstall XP.Install the Win98 as usual will do. No worry. I used to have ME & XP together.Normally as a rule of thumb the older OS needs to be installed first. I have 2 dual-boot systems i use for testing in the shop and have always done it that way to get the OS's to play nice.

patio.  Patio is correct on this. WIn9 needs to be on the boot partition of the first hard drive, a primary partition, unless you plan to use Partition Magic or something like that. WinXP can be on another partition. To avoid problems you need to install Win98 first, then XP. Are you SURE all of your whizbang components have drivers for 98?

There may be "workarounds" but I sure wouldn't trust them !!!   I'm just gonna play it safe and use VMWare.Dual booting information

Do you have the product key?  It may be on a label affixed to the side of the computer case.

dl65  Make SURE your video card is installed with the right DRIVERS. Does the color depth not work EITHER? Like 16 colors is as high as you can go?

Hi I hope this is in the right place. I did a search on here and Google but cannot seem to find an answer.

I have a friends computer and they have two different user account and PASSWORDS for their Win98 system. They each have installed their own software programs and did not allow the other to access them all. They now want to COMBINE everything into one user.

I have log ins and passwords.

Is this possible and if so how please please.

Anyway I go to Control Panel > User Accounts and I can delete a user but I am not SURE what happens to all their person FILES and such. There is no merge account button.

Having a problem printing to HP Printer.  Seems to have STARTED recently, ( I haven't upgraded the RAM nor have I added new programs)   Window pops up with message "invalid page FAULT spoolss.dll  stack fault.  I have tried to update the spoolss.dll library and that doesn't work.  I can print from some files on the COMPUTER  but if I try to print off the internet this message appears.  Also I lose the printer and have to restart the computer to get it back.  I think this is probably something EASY to fix, but not for me.  HELPWhat model printer? Crippling icons is a feature of one version of CoolWebSearch CWS.Control.  CWShredder coupled with SpyBot S&D should remove that CWS variant but you may have to d/l & install clean copies of Control.exe and Rundll32.exe

Long time SINCE I looked at a '98 machine.

My husband has Win98SE on his PC and won't even THINK of upgrading, stubborn fellow that he is. He's been trying to get his CH Flight Sim yoke to work, but the system simply won't recognize it; it keeps saying that it is not installed. He has a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card with a separate game port.

He went to the CH website and did some troubleshooting; it said that he needed to INSTALL DirectX.

And so we downloaded and installed the Direct X from Microsoft that the yoke website said he needed, and when I rebooted, right when it went to load up the desktop, a window appeared that said: "A required .DLL file, WINDOWS/SYSTEM/SHLWAPI.DLL was not found." Then when I hit enter or clicked on the "OK" thing, another window appeared that said: "Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows." I tried booting up in safe mode and it did the same thing. Repeatedly.

So what am I supposed to do with that? Was it the Direct X that did that? My husband said why didn't I just uninstall the Direct X, but I can't even do that if I can't get Windows to boot up! Do I really have to reinstall Windows and oh is he gonna have a cow, a horse, and other assorted barnyard critters if I do!

And the BIG question.... how did *I* get to be the computer person in this house??? The SAD thing is that you cannot uninstall directX. Been that way for some time. I guess you could get someone to send you the file for your O/S and see if that helps or (gulp) SPEND a few hours reinstalling Windows. That ought to help for a while.

My friend owns a Dell Latitude D300XT notebook with Win95 on it.  He has never updated his antivirus.  The laptop was so infested that the registry and the OS was beyond help.  He had long lost his recovery DISK for it.  He decided to FDISK the hard drive and tried to run a clean 98SE full install.  Well the problem is that this laptop uses swappable drives.  In other words you can’t USE the floppy and the CD-Rom at the same time.  When he boots to the 98 Boot Disk he can’t get the CD drive to be recognized or keep the CD driver.  I suggested that he enter the BIOS and select boot to CD first.  No cigar!  Is there a procedure to install WIN98 CD to a laptop with interchangeable bay drives?  Can anyone help my friend?  I’m stumped.If you boot from the floppy it should come up and ask if you want to run with CD-Rom support.

The floppy is only used to boot from the cd. Once that option is reached the floppy should no longer be required anymore.
When he fdisked the drive did he go through all the necessities. i.e. MAKING the primary dos drive active, format the drive after etc.?

ALTERNATIVELY go to www.bootdisk.com and make a bootable cd from the 98 floppy! No need for the floppy drive anymore.

I have tried to backup my system. Windows Setup/Details. My Backup Component listing prompts  to INSERT  CD Windows 98. I need help. Can I DOWNLOAD this somewhere? is it possible to put win98se on a LAPTOP that only has a floppy drive?You can PARTITION and format the drive using a '98 bootdisk and then use another computer to copy all of the FILES from a '98 CD to the hard drive after which you can start the installation going from the floppy again. A BETTER option is......remove the hard drive from the laptop>>>>>providing it has the SPACE.....2/3 gigs......and use a ide adapter......connect it to a pc ide cable.....as a slave a boot the laptop drive withe the win98se install disk......done....If it only has a floppy drive, then it probably has other limitations - like <64 meg RAM which will make it an un-fun experience.

What are system specs? It might not be worth the hassle.64 MB is workable with '98se though.

Need to turn things off like Active Desktop and so on, don't use Norton or any other resource hogging software, use AVG instead.

Every time I go to SHUT down the computer, it closes out windows and than just goes to a black screen.  I thought I'd wait it out and just see if it was acting slow or something, but I LEFT the computer on for 6 hours and came back to the same thing: a blank black screen.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.A blank black screen as in turned off? I'm installing win98se for a friend. Formatted the HD and use a boot disk to install. I don't get asked for a product code but it starts to install anyway. I figure all is well. When I get to the point where it says remove floppy (start up disk) and windows will restart it trys to restart and then I get "invalid system disk" that just keeps repeating over and over. Why won't win98 restart and finish installing? I've tried it disk in, disk out,
and changed the boot sequence in bios many times with the same result. Anyone GOT a solution? I would appreciate it much.Does it say to remove only the floppy or the cd as well?

Have you tried removing both?
Try booting off the floppy only and getting to a command prompt with cd-rom support.

What is the name of the Graphics Tablet? Maybe there is a substitute...Sorry, I didn't see this question.

It is a Media Forte e-pen *serial* tablet and I can't get it to work in XP. They have drivers for their usb tablets and one for XP.  At one point I thought if I could convert to USB I could find a way around the problem but it didn't work.  I EVEN tried a W2000 driver. lol.  Should a converstion to USB have worked?  I don't know and perhaps I didn't do it right.

This tablet is not fancy but it writes very SMOOTHLY and I had a larger Aiptek tablet but it wasn't near as smooth.

Well, in case anyone is interested in an update:    What I discovered was our W98 disk is damaged, I guess enough to not read properly.  I made a COPY at 10x speed and a test intall and when I installed the driver my my network card it grabbed the needed files of the W98 disk without a hitch.  Good news!  It was a bad disk!  I will test it more especially as I had terrible problems getting the sound card installed.

I am going to take my time with this setup but I think the most crucial problem is solved.  

But if anyone has any ideas on how to get this graphics tablet to work...I won't have to deal with W98 at all.  ps...I didn't know XP doesn't format large drives to FAT32.  I thought I had done that before!

Format Queen   I find that gentle washing of the CD in luke warm water with TWO drops of mild SOAP solution and a soft sponge often works wonders on CDs which produce read errors. Copying to good quality CDRs is only sensible to safeguard the original, and it seems that data on CDs is prone to fading over time anyway.

XP won't format drives larger than 32 GB, at least not within Windows, but it will mount FAT32 drives larger than 32 GB if formatted by another operating system and can read & write to them.

Can't help on the Tablet, sorry.

I haven't tried it but it may be possible to format drives larger than 32 GB using the format command from the Recovery Console.

I'm trying to help my mother-in-law with her computer - which is an old COMPAQ cyrix686 running windows 98.  The MS picture viewer is missing and I've tried to re-install it.  I'd like to do this because I think it is the simplest viewer I've seen vs. others that do editing, etc. etc.  She has the original Compaq full restore disk and a w98SE MS CD.  I have a W98 MS CD too.  

1.  Did W98 come with it in the first place?
2.  When I use ControlPanel/AddRemovePrograms the viewer doesn't show up on the list so I can't select it for installation.  It may buried in the .cab files on the w98 CD, but it seems the OS will only look for what's already on the system or on a default list (perhaps).  Even if I knew which .cab file it was in how would I get add/remove to find it?
3.  Are there other ways I can get this program and install it?
4.  I'm shy about using the Compaq restore disk because I'm guessing I can't selectively restore just the ONE program instead of re-loading and changing everything.

How do I uninstall win 98se?? It does not appear in the install/uninstall area. I reinstalled it, thinking it would  just overwrite tself. Now I have hardly any hard drive space left, so I'd like to uninstall it, so ZI'd only have one copy in the computer.Use a windows 98 boot disk or similar and use the fdisk command to DELETE that partition (making sure you GET the right one!).

Remove all peripherals apart from the mouse, keyboard and monitor.

Insert your Win98 cd and floppy if it requies one then reboot your system. It should start the installation process automatically.

Was your XP system using the NTFS file system? If so it'll need formatting to FAT32.Is there a reason for going back to 98  from XP ? ?

Going back to Win 98 - there are certain programs that won't work with XP but do with 98 and there's one I need to use.

I don't think this PC ever had Win 98.  I do have drivers for components under Win98.


I may add that I've another PC with Win XP which is the one I use most of the times.Here is how i WOULD proceed.

Keep in mind this is AFTER you have located all the drivers you will need and have backed upeverything important on that drive...

Travel to bootdisk and DLoad a Win98SE bootdisk.
Extract it to a clean floppy.
Boot with the floppy in and choose "Start with CDRom support" (#2 i BELIEVE)
At the A: prompt type FORMAT C: /s /u and hit Enter. This will erase all your data are you sure? ?  choose Y and hit enter.
Re-boot the same WAY. Watch the boot screen it will tell you which drive is your CDRom. Put the Win98 CD in and again at the A: prompt type in your CDRom drive letter (E: or whatever) and hit Enter.
At the E: prompt type setup and hit Enter...
Grab a beer, this will take awhile.

I have an unusual PROBLEM that started about three months ago on my Win 98. I have to INSTRUCT it to shutdown twice from the Start Menu before it will do so. When shutdown is selected the first time, the screen goes blue and in about one second, the desktop icons come right back. If I redo shutdown, then it shuts down. This problem is a constant one.

Secondly, I have noticed an increasing problem when taking the COMPUTER off sleep. The computer and drive engage, but the screen stays black. Adjusting the monitor does not seem to be able to help, as there is no return of the desktop even if the monitor is turned on and off. The screen just stays blank. I have noticed this problem rarely on Win 95 and 98, but I FEEL the occurrence of this problem is getting much more than in the past.

Lastly, I have noticed that if a lot of memory is used up when multitasking, the Desktop will refresh and assign different icons to the programs. This is really more of an annoyance, but it would be nice to know if it could be fixed.

Any suggestions, especially to solve the first problem? Oh, I should mention, I could PROGRAM a shutoff routine, but I would rather find a Windows fix and I would be very interested in finding out why it is responding so strangely.

Also, Merlin, the link you provided mentioned D-Link being associated with this type of problem. I'll try working with the D-Link system and see if I can solve the problem.

D-Link is not going to be found to be the culprit. Other spyware/adware/trojans etc. are more likely.Culpret found. It is D-Link.

The wusb54gv4.exe causes the shutdown problem. When the monitor is turned off and the wusb54gv4 is ended with the task manager, Windows shuts down correctly on the first try. Interrestingly enough, if the wusb54gv4 is ended without turning off the monitor first, the whole system freezes.

In the link by Merlin, there was a ref. to a possible D-Link "patch" from that company. I will check that out and see if it fixes the problem. If not, I will simply use my desktop program I created that uses Rundll32 to shutdown windows. It is a faster shutdown, anyway.

Thanks!As long as you have a ZIP drive and floppy drive, winzip shoukd be adequate to UNZIP the files. You will probably have to unzip then to the HD.

Have you tried downloading and running Ad Aware? It is free at www.lavalys.com . Also, Spybot and AVG Free AntiVirus COULD come in handy about now? They are free too, just google for them.

I am guessing that you do not have Adware/spyware/virus scanners in place, current and being used. If you are using WINDOWS, you do not have the luxury of this.

OK, here's the deal, my friend got an OLD computer, no make for you guys sorry, i have no idea what it is, but I do have all the important info. OK, i hooked up the computer, and it had win '95 on it, my friend asked if I could install win 98se, so i put in my boot up disk, formatted the HDD, did the sys transfer thing, but when I went to setup, it didn't do anything, so i restarted the computer, did the start computer with cd ROM support, and I saw it say "no cd rom detected" I opened the computer and found it is hooked to a SOUND card. the cd rom is a "Mitsumi 2x CDMC-FX001D" I found a driver for it at driver guide, but I need to get windows installed, how can i do that when my start up disk doesn't have the right driver for the cd rom? You're CDRom will show which drive it  is at the end of the boot process...probably E:
Type E: and hit enter...
At the E: prompt type setup and hit enter...
The installation will now start.

If you had not made a Win98 bootdisk just TRAVEL to bootdisk.com and grab one there. This needs to be extracted to a CLEAN floppy so you'll need to be on another machine.

I have a dillemma. I was stupid enough to delete a bunch of programs from my computer (and I MEAN a LOT) to try and clean it up. But now they are still listed on the add/remove programs LIST! When I tried just clicking "remove" (to get it off the list) it would say it couldn't FIND the delisu somethingorother and instead of taking the program off of the list, it just exits, leaving my list full.....

What computer make/model?I put another hard drive in and I COULD format it and run setup. I have an OLD ACER computer running win95 on an old 500MB hard drive.It previously ran win 98 ok on a different HD.

Ater the 'starting win95' message I get a message saying that win95 has been STOPPED from loading because of an incompatible MSDOS version.

I tried pressing the f8 key during the win95 start message but just recieved a mesage saying that there wasn't enough conventional memory.

Sounds like you are booting to the Windows 98 DOS and then running the Windows 95 setup.  This cannot be done, as Windows 95 uses a different version of DOS than windows 98.  

Instead, use the Windows 98 floppy boot disk to format the hard drive with FAT (if you have the original release of Windows 95) or with FAT32 (if you have Windows 95 OSR2), then install Windows 95.  

CAUTION: Formatting the drive will delete all files on it.

Let us know if you need more help,
DocBTW: Many computer REPAIR shops will sell you a 4 GB hard drive really cheap, which will give you eight TIMES the hard drive space.

My first stop here. a couple problems I am dealing with and being a novice user I am in deep trouble lol..
First STARTED with my IBM pc camera. Tried to turn on the cam and got these messages:
A: The supplied user buffer is not valid
B: Went to the folder in progam files clicked on vidcap32.exe.
Error message read capture driver is not installed properly.
Under Multimedia properties clicking on devices.
       Video Capture Devices

         Microsoft WDM image capture
I have uninstalled and reinstalled still the same results
I was looking into systems info and clicked on problem devices and this was there:

I have not had any problems with the cam ever had it for two years.
Today I run my AVG and to my suprise got these results :

         C:\windows\system\shell32.dll...   "       changed
Now i have run ad-ware, spy bot and nothing has come up  and I run high jack this and nothing changed out of the norm. So I tired to run trend house calls but not able to get it to work. Tried panda virus scan and could not get that to run... I have used them both numerous times..As a result of all this so far computer working ok as far as surfing the web my yahoo messenger, i can view cams, have voice etc..no major program problems.

and as far as a registry cleaner could you recomend one that is fairly easy to use..and I have run scan disk and the results was no errors on this system..

I will just keep reviewing and see what these files belong too......thanks for your help still not working but can live with it everyting seems to be working ok for now.....EasyCleaner is a good program, using it to clean the Registry hasn't failed me yet.I did hear of someone here having a problem when they removed all the duplicate files with easycleaner.
I don't think they read the screen.On these two issues when I run AVG :
  A:...Partition Table (MBR).........results..Changed
  B:...Boot Sector of disc C.........results..Reading error
Is there a way to resolve this without total reformating.
Is there some way to correct this in the system.ini file or boot log.  I have no idea what I am talking about but anyways just thought I would ask..
One other thing on this easy cleaner reg files..there is like 60 entries and how would I know what is safe to delete?...

This can be updated or accepted from within the AVG program, I can't remember where, look around.

B:...Boot Sector of disc C.........results..Reading error
This is an AVG glitch & will be fixed by AVG in the next release.
All is well for now anyways lol..I found a site downloads a update sys file utility program..then found a new drivers on drivers.com seems to work ok..I went into control panel clicked on media icon and went into devices tab scrolled down to video devices and under there was gfxnull and miscosoft WDM image capture and with gfxnull clicked do not use this image device and clicked on do not map with this device. Now all seems well.. the AVG problem corrected itself ..but looks like things working as far as the cam thingy...
