Answer» Allow me to introduce myself, Stuart, UK I've got a crude grip on modern computers (If you call Win98 modern), but I am stuck! I guess you have your reasons but why would you want to use both 98 & w2k? I use both all the time. Boot to DOS in Win98 and run Ghost for partition image backups. Quote ...I need now to remove 98 and get shot of dual boot. ...went to edit boot.ini I havent got such a file, except in D:\prog files\powerquest\ partitionmagic 7.0 (I doubt if this is the file they are refering to) ...How can I stop the dual boot & get 2k to be the primary oper sys? ... Stupot: I've used PartitionMagic in the past, and it is often installed together with BootMagic, which takes control of the boot process away from Windows and manages it instead. My guess is that you have installed BootMagic and PartitionMagic, so you cannot remove the dual-boot option unless this is a feature of the program's uninstaller. Read the documentation for your BootMagic program. Regards, Docc can't be formatted or deleted because all os needs c to boot |

You should first see the POST which tests your memory, etc. Or a welcome screen with the brand name of your PC.i had seen the same thing with my old pc before (microsoft registry checker) it memory serves right, the purpose of such was to check system files and replace files that were changed back to its original STATE.. i also found it to be very annoying since as far as i can tell, there was nothing wrong with the system files what i did to remedy the situation was to reformat my pc and reinstall win98 after reformat and reinstall, i never saw it run again never did get to check on more info on this thing though. it was an old pc and i was able to save all important data rather easily so i had no problems reformatting the pc right, the pc is a real antiquity, that's the reason |

Answer» When turning off the computer I CLICKED the "restart in MS DOS mode".  Now, it STARTS and brings me to a c:windows prompt only.  I rebooted and hit F8 to get to the dos prompts and I 1ST chose start in Normal mode which brought me right back to the c:windows prompt. So I re-booted again and chose the start in safe mode which I was successful in doing.  If I shut down, or restart it automatically TAKES me back to the c:windows prompt.  I can't get it out of the DOS mode or safe mode.  When in safe mode, Safe Mode is in all 4 corners of the screen...HELP!!!  I was only trying to get to a dos prompt and put passwork protection on my computer and now this!!Do the opposite of this: Remember that when dealing with any system files, be cautious of what is changed. Answer» This afternoon, I had left my computer running upstairs while I attended to things downstaris. I went back upstairs to attend to something and heard the familiar "restarting" beep... curious, Iwent to check it out, only to FIND it running through scan disk... it got to about 15% and autiatically restarted the computer again... it did this 2 or 3 times, and then the screen went black, but the monitor BUTTON blinking, like it does when you still have the monitor on after shutting down the computer. ...Now I can't get it to respond at all. I press the power button, nothing happens. I press reset, nothing happens. I turned it off by the switch in the back, let it sit for a while, turned it ack on, and pushed the power button... the fan turns on and it SOUNDS as if it's turning on, but still the "monitor is working, check yor computer and cable" message on the screen.... and no change after letting it go for a while. The fan only turns off if I turn off the switch in the back... It's most likely a hardware problem. If you are fortunate, only the power supply (the device with the switch that you turned on and off) has DIED easy. Try plugging a lamp in the electrical outlet to make sure that is not the problem. If the lamp works, take the computer into a repair shop. Power SUPPLIES are less than $50.00 (USD) to replace. Regards, Doc Unplug the computer from the powergrid entirely and then reconnect it. Your PSU may have failed. Can you test a known working Power Supply Unit on this computer? But first, reset your BIOS: To reset the BIOS, take the following steps: 1. Power down computer 2. Take countermeasures against electro-static discharge 3. Remove computer casing 4. Inspect mainboard for a CMOS jump switch or CMOS battery In case of CMOS jump switch: Follow instructions provided with the mainboard manual. In case of CMOS battery: I. Remove CMOS battery for approximately 10-15 seconds. II. After 10-15 seconds, place the CMOS battery back. 5. Power on system. Do not power on the system when CMOS jumper is set to clear_cmos or when CMOS battery is non-present. Quote
Unless you pay them to do it!!!Turns out we think the processor died... that fan was no longer working, so probably fried itself... got a new box on loan from a neighbor, so now i'm all set again. OK, Clarnet. Thanks for lettings us know how things worked out. |

Answer» Today when I started to computer the icons were at least 3X the size they usually are and the graphics on my wallpaper and online where very grainy.  I did GET an error message on startup (once out of the 3 times I RESTARTED).  It was "there is a problem with your display settings.  The adapter type is incorrect or the current settings do not work with your hardware".   I reset the display settings and it helped a bit, but things still aren't great.   I have no idea what this means.  I would appreciate any suggestions.Videocard drivers need reinstalling. Remove the video card from your device manager. First, we need to know the name of your videocard and the model. SECOND, we need to know the operating system you are using. Thanks for your help. Answer» Is that the same as the normal W98 boot floppy - I've got that one... I was going to run FDisk and Format it again with that, rather than the XPPro disc.why's that message with download been deleted?Let me guess: Merlin posted a message and removed it. It's a bit disconcerting to be offered a download, then for that post to suddenly vanish after you've downloaded it... makes you panic! You've probably got Merlin to thank for that.Right, I've just tried booting up the pc in question after SETTING "Floppy" as the only boot thing in the BIOS, and this is what I got: Quote Verifing DMI Pool Data... (incidentally, there was no floppy disc activity. I opened up the case and checked CONNECTIONS... no obvious problem; in fact I know it's fine, because it WORKED before this problem, and hasn't changed since.) I type "A/:"; press enter, and I get this: Quote General failure reading drive E What's Drive E?! I've only got one HDD and one CD drive! More to the point, I've already repartioned and formatted this HDD - where's it getting this Windows stuff from?! Is it something to do with the registry? I mean, there must be some residual data somewhere that was unaffected by the FDisk and Format activity. I don't get it! (and I'm not new to installing Windows, I got this disc in '98, and I've never experienced anything like this before). Does anyone? (p.s. - I've only got one monitor and one mouse, hence the delay in doing things.)I've just been reading Mac's link: Quote There are basically two ways to format a primary partition, you can either make it bootable by copying system files and making the drive bootable. (this is only for your active primary, when you set it active FDISK writes the boot program to the Master Boot RECORD MBR), or you can let the operating system installation take care of that. I generally just let Windows setup handle that, for a super clean install. To do this, type from the A: prompt while booted with your startup disk: I know how to use FDisk, no problem... what's new is that I don't think I've ever done "Format c: /s" before. I'm beginning to wonder whether I should reformat without the "/s", and let the Win98 disc do it - if it will. I know I've done this before, but it's so long ago - at least three years - that it's a hazy memory... ...the "/s" might explain why I'm getting this "Windows" stuff when I boot up (as quoted above).Right, I just tried a reformat like this "format c:" (without the "/s"), and I managed to get to the pretty setup screens. I did a typical setup, and then when it did the restart - booting from hard disk - it shutdown/restarted on the WIN98 splash screen. I rebooted and was able to select "start in safe mode"; but no joy, instead I got the following error message: Quote While initializing device VCACHE So I did (following same steps as above, selecting safe mode), and I got this: Quote Windows protection error. I reformatted with "/s" and ran it again; stopped dead on the DOS screen just before the pretty setup screen, as before. Reformatted again without "/s", and the same as above. Dead end, apparently. One thing I do notice is that the floppy is doing nothing, even when I insert the Microsoft bootdisk and select boot from floppy (in any combination) in BIOS. It looks to be plugged in alright, but there appears to be no power; or no activity at any rate. This is weird. Of course I'll google, but I can't seem to work this one out... it's beginning to look like I'll have to get new HDD. |

Answer» My husband has Win98SE on his PC and won't even THINK of upgrading, stubborn fellow that he is. He's been trying to get his CH Flight Sim yoke to work, but the system simply won't recognize it; it keeps saying that it is not installed. He has a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card with a separate game port. The sad thing is that you cannot uninstall directX. Been that way for some time. I guess you could get someone to send you the file for your O/S and see if that helps or (gulp) spend a few hours reinstalling Windows. That ought to help for a while. -------------------------------------------------------- Okay.... so, suppose someone sent me the file. How would I go about installing it if Windows won't boot up, even in Safe Mode? Pardon me if I sound stupid. I AM stupid. You can get it from lots of places and it is small enough to fit on a floppy. you can just go to gooogle.com and enter SHLWAPI.DLL press enter and get lots of links. It seems a lot of companies would like to sell it to you , but you can get it free. Look at this link and see if this sounds like you: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win98/Q_20793747.html I don't think you need to buy their solution, but you just have to get that file and copy it to the appropriate directory. Microsoft.com may even have it all packed up for you. I would CHECK there. You can get a boot disk at www.bootdisk.com if you do not have one. COPY is a standard DOS command so you can use it readily to get the file where needed. copy a:\*.dll c:\windows\system32 and press enter (or something about that simple) |

Answer» My friend owns a Dell Latitude D300XT notebook with Win95 on it.  He has never updated his antivirus.  The laptop was so infested that the registry and the OS was beyond help.  He had long lost his recovery DISK for it.  He decided to FDISK the hard drive and tried to run a clean 98SE full install.  Well the problem is that this laptop uses swappable drives.  In other words you can’t USE the floppy and the CD-Rom at the same time.  When he boots to the 98 Boot Disk he can’t get the CD drive to be recognized or keep the CD driver.  I suggested that he enter the BIOS and select boot to CD first.  No cigar!  Is there a procedure to install WIN98 CD to a laptop with interchangeable bay drives?  Can anyone help my friend?  I’m stumped. If you boot from the floppy it should come up and ask if you want to run with CD-Rom support. |

I reinstalled it, thinking it would just overwrite tself. Now I have hardly any hard drive space left... QSKY: Windows 98 SE installs most of the operating system files in the default WINDOWS folder. If you chose a different name for the folder (such as WIN98, or something like that) or, if Windows 98 SE was originally installed in a folder other than the default folder, then you now have two folders with Windows 98 files. You may find the two operating system folders by using the Windows 98 search utility to find EXPLORER.EXE. If my hunch is correct, you will find it in two folders, one named WINDOWS and one named something else. Boot to the Windows desktop and delete the folder that has your old Windows 98 installation (don't worry, if you try to delete the current operating system folder from the desktop, Windows 98 will stop you and display a message that you aren't allowed to do that). Let us know how it goes. Doc Make sure you have an OS disk which can install on a PC withought windows and boot Windows98 from the CD When you go to OPTIONS clikc on 'Boot the computer withought CD Support' or something like that. When you get to the console (Mine was 'A:/>'), type fdisk. From there go to Delete Partition -> Delete Primary Partition and Alt+Ctrl+Del to reboot. Once that is done pop in the new OS CD and reinstall. HTH, NelsonThanks to all I shall try your suggestions Qsky48 |

By holding F8 at boot-up and selecting Safe Mode the PC is fine and I can open all the programs - run defrag and scandisk etc. Any SUGGESTIONS as I don't want to format the C drive and lose some very valuable data in files which are too large to go onto a 3.5" floppy.
