I can't install Windows 98 on my new computer!-erros when I want to acces all applications and other things- If I install XP it works very good. Please explain this to me! I don't use them both!
My computer: AMD Sempron 2600 , nVIDIA GeForce FX5200,256 MB RAM, 40GB.To dual boot '98 and XP you should install '98 on its own partition first and then install XP on a DIFFERENT partition.

To run them both you need 512 MB of RAM but more than 512 MB of RAM is difficult for '98 WITHOUT altering the Vcache settings, so you would be better off just using XP and fitting more RAM in the computer.Maybe my motherboard can't support win 98.You need to visit the MBoard manuf. SITE and GRAB the drivers for Win98...

Chances are your other components will need Win98 drivers as well.

patio.  XP has a lot more drivers included in the OS. With '98 you may need to add drivers manually.

I would up the RAM to 512 MB, or more, and only use XP.

What are the rest of the hardware specifications like, drive speed partitioning, drive buffer, foramtting?

Was the drive partitioned with diskpart and formatted with the XP CDto HPFS/NTFS or was fdisk and format to FAT32 used?

Do you only use FULL formatting when preparing a drive? Quick formatting is only good for deleteing files really.As long as it is a X86 (Intel/AMD) family processor it should be supported..

does anyone know of an easy way to disable broadband connections in windows 98.  xp allows you to SIMPLY disable the connection with a COUPLE of mouse clicks but my version of 98 doesn't give me any icons SHOWING my connection so i can't close it.  of course it is likely something stupid and i just haven't figure it out YET. any help would be much appreciated.There are a few tricks.. but NONE of them has the ease of use for "disable network" like XP has.

1) Stoppig the DHCP client service in a dos box.
2) In the registry, disable the network start type by setting it to 0.
3) a immediate panick stop would be to use. WINIPCFG in the run box and click RELEASE.
4) Click on DISABLE network adapter from the SYSTEM properties on MY computer.Don't plug a cable in? If the adapter does not have the driver loaded that will do it. Also there is a spot under network connection to check a box to show the icon in the task bar.If you are using ZA for a firewall, just engage internet lock. Windows 98 has a very primative logg off function, but you are right, it wont close the network connection. Just power off the pc is the best.

When I load windows all I get is the picture on my desktop.
I can't get into windows through safe mode either.
I've tried to reinstall,but in the last few minutes of install I receive this message: An error occurred loading C:\windows\system\shdocvw.dll The file may not have been installed or it has been corrupted.With the same text I also see the same message for shdoc401.dll.I only see these when trying to reinstall,there are no messages upon restart,just a desktop with no icons.
Without being able to get into windows I can't even run my antivirus.
My win 98 install disc is actually stored on my computer under Windows\Win 98\setup, which I can access through dos.How do I fix,delete, or run a
program to do this for me through dos?

from a lowly amatuer.This PROBABLY means a few of the files in that Win98 storage directory have become badly fragmented and or corrupted...do you have access to a Win98 CD ? ?
If so and you don't want to lose all your data what you can do is from DOS rename win.com to win.old then boot to the CD and run Setup. This method will RETAIN all your settings etc. while REPAIRING whatever ails Windows...
The win.com file will be found in the root directory of C:

patio.  No i don't have the actual cd,I can get to the stored disk through dos though,\windows\win98\setup.Will this still work? the files that are on the stored disk shouln't be corrupted as well,should they?Hopefully they're only on the currently installed version.

I have previously installed other hp printers on this laptop and had this problem.  The current problem is as follows:  When I hit print in ANYTHING (word, notepad, imager, etc.) an error informs me of a general protection FAULT associated with the file "gdi.exe".  Search finds this in windows\system.  This seems to be a graphics file.  When I had this problem before, an hp tech talked me through disabling some hp driver FILES and enabling something--I can't remember.  I don't want to diable files without knowing what the result will be.  I just want my printer to work.  Any help would be appreciated.  

CurttoYou can alwats reinstall there driver from there main website. Just UNINSTALL it and reinstall it. That should help with the problem. http://ccleaner.com Oh yeah make sure you CLEAR out the junkie registry first because sometimes just uninstalling it will leave something behind

My computer with Windows XP crashed, so i took the hard DRIVE from another computer with Windows 98. I can't get the computer to boot.You will have to reinstall the APPROPRIATE operating system on that NEW hardware. No easier WAY that will work. Sorry.

I'm running WIN 98 on this old computer I picked up. For some reason, the pictures are oversized and really messed up. They appear very broken and pixelated. JamesYou should make a drive image of your current installation, and then do a Clean install of XP.

INSTALLOEM will do just fine, but to AVOID problems, you should reformat the drive and install fresh, after bacing up your data. An over the top install is a RISKY proposition, but you can try it if brave.What is the space of the hard drive etc.........winxp can cause problems with older systems.....

I've been rebuilding my daughter's computer and thought I was DONE, but I noticed that whenever I launch a new window, the only opnes that show up on the taskbar are IE and Firefox windows.  NOTHING else seems to cause a tab to be created on the taskbar (not even standard Windows programs like Window Explorer, System tools, etc.)

Just for the heck of it, I started the system up in Safe mode and everything seems to function normally there.

Any clues/hints on what I should look for?     :-/

You can CHOOSE to restart in MS-DOS mode and use the scanreg /restore command at the command prompt.
Then choose a date when it worked LAST and see if that helps.You can open it from within IE under the tools menu.Hi,

I tried to install windows 95 with a cd, but my cd-rom drive is not reading the cd. Is there any possible way in which I can copy the files I need for the INSTALLATION to diskettes so I can install win 95 using my FLOPPY drive. If it is doable what files will I need and in what order.Is the CD scrupulously clean, scratch-free and uncracked?

Can you make a copy on another computer?Well I dont think it is the cd, because I tried it with a different computer and it WORKED. I even tried a cd I know for fact that work but in that computer the cd-rom just dont read it. But that is not my concern for now because in the near future I'm going to replace that cd-rom drive. What I want is to learn how to copy those files to floppy disk so I can do the installation through the floppy drive. What files will I need and what will be the secuence.

On a Windows 98 SE computer I was working on, when I PRESS CTRL + ALT + DEL, the words are in a different language (possibly German).

Pretty MUCH all of Windows (eg. Start Menu, Different Windows such as My Computer, Programs etc) are in the CORRECT lanuage though (English-US).

Does anyone know how I can correct that?  It's mainly just the window when I press CTRL ALT DEL.

When was the last occasion when you ran scandisk and defrag? Which anti-virus are you using and how do you keep it up to date?

An unusual situation. Computers don't need to be warmed up, so I would imagine that you need to change the CMOS battery as the NEXT thing to do, after 5 years use.

Click on the Link below and scroll down to CHANGE CMOS BATTERY for full instructions.You have major mechanical problems if it takes an hour to "warm up". This does not even count the other software problems that no doubt exist. Do you have any experience fixing computers or do you have a geeky friend?Maybe the hard-drive has minimal free-space.

'Warm up the Set' is a Radio, Radar or Television expression.As above, there are a lot of POSSIBLE causes.  Some basic things to try:

- try another wall outlet for your power.  Preferably in another room.

- try another power cord

- check the power-on button.  It may be bad or the wiring is loose/intermittent.

- if there is a setting for voltage on the back of your PC (110/220) make sure it is correctly set for your area.

- hold the power button in for several seconds, if it is button.  If it's a toggle switch, never MIND.

- make sure your PC power management configuration is correct.  It may be in some sort of sleep/hibernation mode.

- there should be no 'warmup' time with your PC.  If it behaves as such, then you may (also) have a bad power supply or intermittent connection on your main/motherboard.

All of this is guesswork without some knowledge of what you are using and how (PC/hardware models, changes made or problems when this occurred, etc.).

Windows starts in 640x480 and 16 colours. Changing the display size or colour will no take AFFECT after restarting. I assume that the problem is that the computer doesn't restart properly. Any clues anybody.Try re-installing your video drivers. To identify them right clik an empty spot on the desktop choose properties then settings and choose advanced and then ADAPTER...

tried to restore with win98se disk, don't know which file comes from or goes toIf you put your install disk in the drive and reboot do you get the OPTION to Repair Windows?  If so, try it.  More than likely you're LOOKING at a reinstall of Windows.  If you have to reinstall, you may lose some of your data.  Good luck.Try using SFC to recover the original files from the CD.there was no option to repair windows. i have removed the win 98 and reloaded about five times, but i still get the following

When do you get the error?
While BOOTING or when you start an application?when i start up my computer.  it comes up in the DOS mode(?).  i hit enter 4 times then  win 98 begins.
reads-system.ini can not be found, then it lists 4 .vxd files.Sometimes a clean install is a quick & efficient way to go.i take it that means erasing the whole c drive and re-installing from the very start.
I don't mean you have to do that, it's an option though depending on how much other stuff you have on there. Quote

Actually there is a non-destructive method for re-installing Win98 which retains all your files and settings...if this is what you want to do post back and i'll give instructions.

If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it so much. I have a Compaq Presario, running Windows 98. My modem recently quit, and I had it repaired at a shop. Upon return, the computer would not let me play any on-line games. A screen came up that said, "applet not found." I DOWNLOADED java, and now the games will load (slowly) but freeze up. I have to manually shut the tower off, and re-start the computer, because even the mouse FREEZES....it also makes a weird, "chattering" noise when frozen. My daughter has XP, and says mine is FASTER than hers is. It only freezes during an on-line game. It's very frustrating, as I paid for Pogo on AOL, and can't play anything. Also, EA games is no help. You will need this info later.It is BETTER to do a clean install of XP, if you don't intend to use '98 anymore, setting up your drive partitions with the XP CD and FORMATTING directly to HPFS/NTFS

Click on the link below for more info.I have 3 partitions: WIN98 + WINXP + Files. I will preserve the 2 last partitions, formating the first (format to NTFS) with XP' CD, or Partition Magic. Is this enough?The problem with the shortcut approach is if this system was RUNNING properly then Win98 was on the C: partition; XP was on D: or another and files was on a 3rd partition.
When you install any dual-boot setup certain files from each OS install to the root dir. of C:
This is where all PC's look for the OS by default and anything other than this just causes headaches.
So doing it the easy way will only leave C: empty except for the root dir.
If it were me i would bite the bullet; backup all important data do a clean install of XP to the C: partition and re-install your programs.
You will wind up with a much happier, better running machine as a result. ;)OK,OK, I'm convinced. I'll make the following:
1) From C: win98, I'll run partition magic, (where it is installed), formating the partition where I have XP and eliminating it

2)I'll resize partition C: with the same partition magic, in order to futurely accomodate XP better

4) All my important files will be in a untouched partition

5) With XP CD, I'll install it in C:

I just GOT a Dell computer from a family member and they cannot seem to find the System Recovery or Driver disks. My PROBLEM is that I am trying to install a linksys pci WIRELESS adapter and Windows keeps asking for the CD because there are some 98 files that are needed to complete the install.

i don't know what to do with my computer it will load and install files but it will only LOG on in safe mode and i can't get in to work on regular SCREEN to add windows 95 to it. i was told u have to install 95 before 98 but my computer wouln't alow me to do that i need searious help.

Set your bios to cdrom as 1st boot device.
Boot your computer with the 98se disk in the cdrom.

You will loose EVERYTHING on your computer, this is often a good idea.  
Otherwise backup your junk first.You do not have to have Windows 95 installed to load Windows 98. If 98 is an "UPGRADE CD"it may ASK you for a 95 CD to insert briefly, but that's all.

I've written some batch files for my win98 unit which run in DOS. One makes copies of the registry files, several core system files,  my core security apps and their configuration files, user startup folder, etc. The other batch file is called from autoexec.bat and overwrites these files and folders at reboot. It's basically a system restore that runs in DOS for the more vulnerable parts of my OS.
The whole thing works quite well but still has a degree of vulnerability with the backups, batch files, and bootup being on the hard drive. I'd like to move the whole thing to a CD and have my system boot from that CD. My burning software, Burnatonce, is supposed to be able to make bootable CDs but I haven't been able to make it work. I need the CD to use my autoexec.bat and config.sys files for the rest of my setup to work properly. Most of Bart's tools don't run on win98, so what would I use to do this? I'd prefer to not have to use a separate boot floppy if possible.

DocI see that the trial version of Nero is a 100+mb download. That's definitely a bit more than I can justify to make one bootable CD, especially when I'm on dialup. With win98, I'd never use most of its features. BingBurn and some of that other software looks like a possibility.
For right now, I am using a boot floppy and STARTING in DOS, calling the batch files from the CD. It's not quite what I had in mind but it gets the job done. It definitely TAKES quite a bit longer to boot COMPLETELY to windows though. A bit inconvenient but worth it.
RickNot too LONG ago i purchased a 52x CD-RW drive that came with Nero Express for free, all for $15.00 after rebates.

Check Best Buy, Circuit City, or some other outlet.

......what it is when I bought new computer I got the guy in the shop to take the C:drive out of my old computer and fit it into the new one as a D:drive...which is fine, except I can't access any of those files on the D:drive which were saved behind my WIN98 adminstrator password on the old machine, when what is now the D:drive was the C:drive....can't even look into the relevant directories with DOS (access denied)....anyone know how I can get at these files...I guess by booting up from the D:drive maybe, but how do I do that....?

DrDxYou have tw3o drives that were SET up as primary partitions. The  easiest way to FIX this quickly is to download, burn and boot with a Linux Live CD and copy the files to the new main hard drive. you didn't give a description of your machine so try this Linux CD:

DrDxDo you have a CD burner and software that can burn an ISO file? If so just download and burn this CD and boot with it in your drive. It writes nothing to your hard drive, in fact you can even riun it in a machine with no hard drive present! Totally safe and will allow you to copy files at times when Windows won't. This Linspire version is the most Windows like, and is very easy to use.

Heck, you may not even be afraid of Linux after it solves this PROBLEM for you.Why not just boot to DOS (not a DOS window) and change to the d: drive. Find and delete *.psw associated with the admin account. Removing all the .psw files on d: will ELIMINATE all passwords for all accounts on that drive.Windows 98 password is not a secure feature. When you LOGON you can hit the escape key to bypass the logon entirely.Your right, it is not a secure feature. Passwords in W98 are stored in username.pswThat's why I think the password issue is irrelevant to this problem.

can you boot a computer that has xp....which you cant access from a 98 os disk?... we have partition magic in the floppy right now but wont boot from the floppy, primary boot source is floppy...any ideas?No you cannot.You do not have a legal XP as I recall, so you may or may not be able to boot with that. You can DOWNLOAD free bootdisks at www.bootdisk.com, but I am not sure that will accomplish what you are TRYING to do. I guess GIVE it a go.

I dug out a old computer yesterday with windows 98 on it and tried to install the XP UPDATE on to it, it wouldn't take it. it said it had a error. it froze so I shut it off. re started it and it went to safe mode on it's own. I defrag it. But I can't get it out of safe mode now. I have NEVER had this happen.

TRYING to rehab an old P2 machine. It will boot though the 98 splash screen than to the desktop wall paper. Here it hangs with just the wallpaper and the hour glass (which I can MOVE with the mouse). No icons or task bar or time. NOTHING but the wall paper.
It will boot into safe mode and EVERYTHING works from there.
From Safe mode I have checked the startup files (msconfig), I have scanned and defraged, checked all the device manager stuff. Still can't get it to do a normal boot.
Any ideas?

FlameFormat and reinstall Windows. If it is a used machine with an unknown heritage, you are better off avoiding the headaches. Heck, you could have done that by now!  Wow 2 replies in less than an hour. Thanks.

Any way, no there has been no changes made in at least 2 years. This machine was used to RUN autocad back when I was doing that for a living. Got a new machine and this old 98SE was used a few times for e-mail but started to do this hang thing. I, at first, thought maybe a virus. It uses the paid version of AVG with zone alarm on a 3 computer network connected to broadband. All scans come up negative.

I would have just reformatted and reinstalled but I no longer have the 98SE CDs, or the autocad CD. I again want to use the autocad, I can use it from safe mode, but it is just a pain to boot to safe mode all the time.

Go to ebay and get a legitimate copy of Win 98SE.  Then, format the hard drive and install Win 98SE.Using safe mode untick the startup items & re-boot to normal mode.
If it works, re-tick them one at a time to find the culprit.

computer wont go past (verifying DMI Pool Data). trying to use boot disk to reactivate cd-rom. need to re-install 98. son installed 3.1 over 98 and system is TOTALLY stuck. tried f8 to get to safe mode but computer doesn't react to commands. tried to start up with boot disk in drive still no luck.can anyone please help.Did son do something else too, perhaps?

You have to get past this to load, so you can remove the motherboard battery for 5 minutes to reset the BIOS.

Then IF you are running:

Download a 98 bootdisk 9free at www.bootdisk.com

Run FDISK and delete the partition, then create a nenw primary partition.

Reboot and format the partition

format c:/u/s

When I boot up the computer I receive an 0E FATAL exception error messasge. I am able to start up in safe mode and found that both drive A and drive C are using MS/DOS compatilbility mode file system. From what I've researched it sounds like a driver problem. How do I repair this. Neither the FLOPPY drive ,CD , or internet are working in safe mode. Could this be some sort of virus? No software or hardware has been added recently.Have a read:

Tell us about the machine and spyware/adware/virus removal programs you are using on a regular basis.I've been going thru the microsoft  data base including the article you mentioned. No luck yet. The system is a used unit I purchased from dell P4 1.8 without any software. I installed WIN98 which has been working fine  for 18 months. The machine is on a network with 2 other machines. Try these options.
Reboot and bring up the boot menu (hold down the ctrl key while booting)
Select step by step and answer yes to each item. You will normally get a boot failure when the faulty item loads. If doesn't work,
Reboot and bring up the boot menu again
Select the logged option
You will likely get the failure, but reboot to safe mode. Use Notepad to open c:\bootlog.txt and look at the last driver that attempted to load. That is your most likely problem.

I have a DELL computer at home that is about 6 years old.  It has been running very well until yesterday.  I recently hooked up to Cable through Comcast to get the fastest internet connection available.  That has been working great, but it came with several pieces of free software to make life easier, yea right....

I downloaded MCAFEE Virus Protection and it was running well.
I downloaded McAfee Firewall Plus and it was running well.
Then, there was something else called McAfee Privacy (or something like that), so I downloaded that.  BAM!  My computer now no longer boots up.  I get to the Windows splash screen, and the startup sound plays, and then the window just freezes.  I can do a ctl-alt-delete at that point, and it looks like Explorer is running, and then there are only about 2 other processes running.  Both of them are McAfee related.

I tried to get the computer to boot in safe mode, and I can't even do that.

Does anyone have a suggestion?  I booted up using the original recovery CD and refreshed the operating system and that didn't help.

What steps would you go through to try to repair this thing?  There are several files on the computer that are VERY VERY important to me.  I made backups of some of them, but they are not updated as much as the could have been.

PaulReboot to DOS - Command prompt only (hold down the ctrl key while booting to get the boot menu). Enter the command scanreg/restore and select a date prior to the date when the trouble started. Reboot to Windows and see if you can uninstall the problematic software.OK, I will try again. So far, I can't get the boot menu to display. I have tried holding down CTL while booting and it just ignores it.  I have tried F8 while booting, and that doesn't work either.  The computer keeps going to SCANDISK immediately, instead of letting me have the boot menu.

But,  will definitely try again.  Thanks for the suggestion!

Then format the drive and reinstall Windows, etc. Make SURE SP2 is loaded BEFORE connecting to the internet, and load on your antivirus, spyware and adware programs prior as well.

OBVIOUSLY lose the McAffee!   The end solution that I came up with that worked is as follows.  I finally got the computer to boot up to a dos prompt.  I went over and deleted the McAfee.Com directory and rebooted.  Walla. problem solved.....  But, I had already re-installed the operating system, so I still have work to do.

I am trying to UPGRADE my COMPAQ Presario 5360 OS from window 98 to windows xp. I added MEMORY, so that I have prenty to work with. It istalls and locks up when INSTALLING devices. I have tried updating drivers and deleting the existing partisions and the same thing happens. I also tried installing windows xp on a seperate partition and the same thing happens. Could some one help please??You have to upgrade your computer.  You can add all the memory sticks you want but memory sticks are only temporary space not for storage.  You hard drive is your storage.  your hard drive only holds 64mb of ram you need at least a 128mb ram or hard drive to run Win. XP.  Also your proessor is weak. In other words if you want to run XP replace you hard drive with a newer one also your processor or just BUY a new computer.I agree... Windows XP requires more power than what you currently have... It's in your best intrest to upgrade.  Even if you could manipulate it into working without the upgrades, you're system will lag terribly, just from running the OS itself.

Using a Windows 98SE UPGRADE disk to improve my system after a fdisk and format. Have orginal Windows 98 disk but do not want to load then upgrade.  What file does the upgrade disk look at to determine qualifying software?  Can it be read off CD or is it hidden in a CAB file?  Hello mpumas & welcome to the CH forum.

Using an upgrade disk implies that there is ALREADY something to upgrade.  So, if you do not install Win.98 after fdisk & format what will you upgrade??

An upgrade disk will not normally install a full OS, just upgrade an existing one.

There are 2 inds of upgrade disks. One is for upgrading an installed Win98 to Win98SE.

The other can fully install if you have a previous qualifying Windows product available, but it does not have to be installed. It merely asks you for the old product to be inserted briefly when prompted during the install.

Since I am unsure what you have as far as the "upgrade CD", I would suggest a format with a Win98SE boot disk (free at www.bootdisk.com) and then try to load the Upgrade CD with d:\setup, to see what happens.

If this doesn't work, you obviously have the older type of upgrade and will have to install the old Windows first. But give this a try!

I don't understand what you're asking for... What types of files are held WITHIN those folders?  Because, if so... The Windows folder holds all different types of files (typically important ones that could destroy your system if deleted, etc etc.), or are you asking for something else?  Like I said, I don't understand what you're asking...

We have 3 pcs---original owners of all three.  One runs on 98, one on ME, and one on XP.  I tryed to upgrade the pc running windows 98 to ME edition.  It comes up with the FOLLOWING message:

This VERSION of Windows ME edition cannot be installed on your computer.  Please obtain the correct version from your computer manufacturer.  Message: SU0173

Why would I not be able to install ME on this computer?  I could see it if it were an illegal copy of ME, but this is our original cd that came with our computer.

The computer in question (98) is a Gateway, and our pc running ME is an HP.  Would that have anything to do with why the gateway will not except this version of windows?

Any help you can give would be appreciated.
MarleneDid you buy the winME disk separately or is it one that came with the winME PC? Often the disks that come with a PC are restore disks and don't work on other units. The disk that came with my HP (98) is a restore disk that works only on that PC. That's probably what you have as well.

The ME disks  were  not bought seperately... they came with our pc when we bought it.  I thought because we are the original owner that I could take the ME disks and use them to upgrade our  pc that runs windows 98.  I didn't reformat hdd, just put the first cd into the cd rom drawer and began upgrading.  It started to copy some files, then came up with the message that I stated in my earlier post.

Windows 98 is running fine on our Dell.  Just thought I'd upgrade to ME.

I agree with the others. The restore disks are keyed to that machine probably and to the manufacturer, at least. It just won't work. Sorry!  Thanks for all your help-----I think you're right!  Which is fine, the 98 is working great!

I am CURRENTLY using Win 98SE with a pentium 3, 500mghz. cpu, 512 mb of dram, 80 gig hard drive, 64 mb ati video card, soundblaster AUDIO card and a U.S.Robotics 56K Int. Voice modem. I also use IE 6.0 with all the service paks. Unfortunately, no matter what I do windows will not detect the modem when you try to go online. In order to gain ACCESS to the internet I have to uninstall the modem and then reinstall it either by using 'remove' and 'add' after opening the modem icon or by using the 'add new hardware' icon in control panel. I have installed the latest drivers from 3com as well as run the following spyware and virus programs; Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad Aware SE, CCleaner, Trojan Hunter, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Doctor, AVG 7.1, Spyware Nuker XT and NoAdware. I also have included the latest Highjack This log. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I've got a small problem with Windows 95, on our old HP Pavilion 7285 200mhz PC.  Windows 95 starts up normally, and runs very fast most of the time.  But when I go into an MS-DOS game, and exit BACK to Windows, the screen freezes.  Is there any fix for this?  I tried using PC Doc Pro, but although it fixed registry errors, the problem still occurs.  As of now I'm trying to avoid the problem by shutting down and going to MS-DOS before I attempt to use a DOS PROGRAM.Hey, Darth, I feel like we are old friends now.

One of my servers at the back office has Win98 .. i GOT so pretty bugged that i tried to run the installation for win xp over it .
just after reboot of the installation files for win xp setup did i realise that that machine was a pentium II processor with only 6 MB and three drives equallly dumbly partitioned by somebody ages ago... And so i quit the xp installation.

My problem is whenever i restart the machine the default taken in is WinXP set up log and not the win98 selector.

Could somebody help me in putting the Win98 selector as the booter default..

There should be a white box with text in it.
find the [operating systems] line
there should be two strings below it
if you scroll to the right a little bit, one should say something like "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" or "Microsoft Windows XP Home"
and the other should be something like "Microsoft Windows 98"
Select the line that says "Microsoft Windows 98" and click the [[Move Up]] button.

Click Apply, then OK
Try rebooting....


I did all this from inside Windows XP Pro, and I don't have 98 installed, so I'm COMPLETELY guessing, let me know.

I saw the boot.ini tag in the msconfig utility RUNNING ON WIN XP , but the win98 OS has got different tabs over it PROGRAMS.INI AND WAT NOT NOTTING called boot.ini....

I hope i can get thru this thing... and i dont see anything similar to Windows 98 written anywhere within the win98 utility...weird..

the last option is to completely format the machine or dispose it and BRING in some NEW xp P4 machine

If this is time critical, you may just want to reformat your hard drive.  It's not preferable, especially if there's anything on there you want to keep, but it might be quicker.  I'm not an expert on any system, much less 98, so if you want to do this without reformatting, you'll have to hang with me......

if u have a WIN98 machine u will indeed have a boot.ini file in the C:\WINDOWS folder...
under [operating systems] delete the one that is not needed and
under default : simple leave default:C:\         deleting the rest that comes after the back slash...


that solves the problem....
dont forget to change the props of boot.ini to read only....

On the other hand, if the problem was fixed by editing the boot.ini file...would a Master Boot Record fix do the trick?  Are the MBR and boot.ini the same thing?  I thought that the MBR was a bunch of sectors on the HD that the BIOS read when it started up, having nothing to do with boot.ini.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

Windows 95 OSR2 will not boot even in Safe Mode and fresh installation on new P4 m'board. The system halts during boot with the error "While initializing device IOS, Windows protection error" I have tried renaming smartdrv.exe and rmm.pdr without solving this.

I think there must be some way to just start directly in DOS mode without seeing the boot menu first.

Can someone please help with this. The user wants to keep using several DOS programs which will not run in Windows XP.

But I still cannot remember how to boot directly to a command PROMPT which is all I really need. I know it is possible because years ago I had to restore the Explorer boot, but I can't remember how it was done.

Holding down the Control key at OS boot should bring up a menu.
Have you considered dual booting with XP and DOS 6.22?F8 key works too. I just wanted to make it really simple. Anyway, discovered today that it won't run from Win95 Command prompt selected from that boot menu, but does run if started via batch file run in XP command window. Go figure! It won't work when the executable is run from a PIF in XP.

Next test will be if it will print.

Thanks for the suggestion.Out of INTEREST, what application is this? DOSBox may be worth looking at.Dac Easy Accounting, possibly before Dac. It uses a Basic executable but starts from another, possibly compiled. I will have a look at DOSBox if the XP command window doesn't work out.

The computer is a Dell Dimension desktop XPS T450.  The motherboard says Intel Seattle II SE440BX-2, and the sound card says Aureal Montego II Sound Card.It was real easy to find on the Dell web site:

ThanksCan you set your colors to 16-bit in your Display settings?  How many options do you have there?  Even if only temporary, I would change to a higher color setting to see whether it helps, although the fact that the pics to which I posted a link looked clear indicates CHANGING this setting MAY not help much.  But, 256 is a rather low color setting and does not yield as nice a color display as the higher settings found on most systems.  I just checked this on my Win 98SE comp.  The difference between 256 color and 16-bit is quite remarkable.

I presume you're transferring pics from your digital camera.  Right?  I think you need to experiment with different settings in your camera and see how that affects how your pics look when transferred to your computer.  

If your system does not allow changing color to higher than the 256 color setting, you'd need to upgrade your video card to resolve this problem.  I gather you don't know whether you have onboard video or a separate video card.  Right?  Have you ever looked inside your computer case?  That's the best way to determine this.

That worked. I went to 16 bit, it was better, than 16 bit high color, now have it set at 32 bit true color. Seems allright now. Pictures are clear once again. Would this setting be good to keep?

Hi, can anyone help with this?  It flashes up everytime i START the PC.  I have broadband installed, so all of the Firewall and virus check programs start first, then once everything has cleared from the screen ths message pops up!

Miss Cleo takes the weekend off.  If this just occurred wiotout any changers being made, if I were a betting man, I'd put money on this being a MALWARE problem. I may be WRONG but carry out the procedures listed [highlight]in this post[/highlight] and post a Hijackthis logfile here when DONE.

My HP scanner made a grinding noise, when I booted up my COMPUTER. Having problems reinstalling the scanner CD Software. The CD Drive works fine. No error messages. USB cable seems allright.
Wasn't scanning at the time problem started. The computer was booting up when the scanner started to made the noise. Also I noticed a''Yellow ?" in the device manager. I had disconnected the scanner from my system and deleted it from"ADD\ REMOVE" before I tried to reinstall. When the steps from the CD came up to install, I clicked on the steps one at a time, but didn't seem to do anything........(Using a HP ScanJet 4200C.)  [Windows 98SE.]

The scanner I mentioned is about 6 years old, but has been used very little.
I tried 2 different usb ports, and even thought about getting a new usb cable.
Undecided what should be done. (Use process of elimination.)

Unplug the scanner from the USB port, uninstall it again, remove all drivers, reboot and run something LIKE Ccleaner to clean up any leftovers. Install the drivers and plug the scanner in only when asked to do so.
If it doesn't work now, then it's probably bin fodder.Would cleanup work?

Got the comp from a friend who didn't want to bother with it.  No CD, No bootdisk.  Just as is.  booted it up and this is what I got.
Got the HP screen, the win 98 screen and jump into DOS (C:\WINDOWS) and thats it.   I can start it in safe mode, cleaned out all the unneccessary stuff, old prgrams and such.  But I can't make a bootdisk in safe mode.  I do have a win 98 CD from an old HP Pavillion I had before.  I did install it.  Still the same results (jumps back into DOS).  
checked Bios , they look OK.  When I goto the sites for bootdisk I not sure which one to use.  I don't what to format without all my safety NETS.  Any and all info you can give I would be very grateful.

Download [highlight]this archive[/highlight], extract it to a folder and run the resultant self extracting diskette image, bootdisk.exe, with a diskette in the floppy drive. It will CREATE a Win98 TYPE bootdisk with real mode CD and mouse divers plus a few other tools.
Your first CD drive will be loaded at v:.got to V:\>setup /ie /im /is /nr and enter.  It started OK then in win98 setup recieved error - MESSAGE SU995035 , AN INVALID COMMAND OPTION WAS SPECIFIED.  CHECK THE COMMAND LINE AND TRY AGAIN, OR TYPE SETUP/? FOR HELP ON THE SETUP COMMAND OPTIONS. (0X13ab).

That will never work.  Yes, I have a win98 CD from an old HP I had.  I needed the bootdisk.  Backdate gave me the right info.  Just when I got to the part at V:\ setup....... that was one command prompt that created a error, which i fixed by searching the CD and put in SETUP.EXE.  instead Allll fixed. windows up and running.  ;DThank YOU BackdateWhen installing Windows and many other programs etc, the focus must be set to the installer location (Or a path statement issued perhaps).

I have a laptop that previously was used in a business by many users.  As a consequence it is very SLOW and also has Windows 98 on it.

I have bought XP to put on it.  I assumed that one of the things this would do would be to wipe the hard drive in installation thus speeding up the computer.  Is this the case?  If not how do I wipe clean the hard drive and then put XP on the computer?

I put the XP disc in and it ran automatically.  It started to go through the usual screens and then it detected that NORTON anti virus was running.  A message came up telling me that this needed to be disabled or removed for XP to load.  I tried add/remove programs but it appears that I need a password in order to do this.  Unfortunately when I was given the machine I was not given the password.  Another unfortunate thing is that now that company has gone out of business and there is no one to contact.

A friend of mine suggested going into the BIOS and selecting the computer to boot DIRECTLY from the CD drive.  I tried this and changed the list succesfully with the CD ROM appearing at the top of the list.  On rebooting, however, a DOS screen came up with a blinking cursor and it LOOKED as thought the disk drive was spinning.  It then seemed not to move forward with the XP boot but rather boot, as normal, onto the Windows 98 desktop.

I would be very grateful for anyone with the expertise and time to have a look at this issue and help me solve it.  All I am looking for is to clean the hard drive and start again with a quick laptop using XP.

If you own the upgrade CD, then you can only install XP if another operating system is currently installed.

After having some virus problems, I installed some new anti-virus programs.  Atfer running on of them and  following the recommendations for repairs, I lost several of my windows 98 files, including the start-up sequence.    Would the scanreg/restore trick work to get my files back, or do I have to re-install windows?  I think otherwise the COMPUTER is fine because only 62 files were quarrantined or deleted.  THANKS in advance.If they are in quarrantine can't you restore them from there. I used to have Nortons & it had that option.
 Also, if you run more than one anti-virus they tend to bump heads somewhere. Less ya meant anti-maleware programs in general. But USUALLY one of each type will do fine.Even if you could restore these files, you would probably be restoring infected copies and putting yourself right back where you started.
Windows doesn't use a "startup sequence" - That died with AmigaDOS!
Is this Win98 or Win98SE? Do you have a full installation CD? What files are missing? What ERRORS are generated?

This second problem is a bit more awkward to explain. Again I'm on 98SE, not through choice.

Over the PAST few months I've come across problems when installing or running some programs. Basically the whole machine freezes but with a twist. The monitor image goes wavy, almost like a slowed down yet constant degauss.

It hasn't proved as too much of a problem as most programs I use are free, so I just find another ONE which doesn't cause the problem but recently I've noticed that sometimes when the screen freezes a DOS prompt either half appears or appears blank on the screen.

Again I asked my friend, the linux USER, and he thought it might have something to do with settings on the DOS prompt in that it's allocating all memory to the prompt and causing a crash. When an installation or program needs to use it it crashes.

This one seems to puzzle most I've asked.

I know this machines on the way out but I can't afford another one at the moment. I'd upgrade OS but this machine would either run it sluggish or not at all.

What programs are these? Are they DOS programs? Have you tried adjusting the settings for the program in WIndows? If they are DOS programs do they run in full screen DOSbox through WIndows? What if you sut down and restart in DOS mode?

If Windows programs, again which ones? Are they made for Win98? Some specifics would be helpful.

Whats wrong with XP, you can use this just as well.  Someone installed XP for a very good reason, now you can use new softwares that don't install on win98 machines...
