Answer» I'm running WIN 98 on this old computer I picked up. For some reason, the pictures are oversized and really messed up. They appear very broken and pixelated. I was wondering if I could do a system restore. The problem began this morning. When I tried installing my modem the screen said "click next", but the button was off the screen and I couldn't reach it. So, if anyone knows how to fix this or do a system restore/ restore default settings, PLEASE respond. Thank you.Sounds like you (or something) has changed the screen resoultion. Right click a blank AREA on the screen and select properties. In the dialog box select the settings tab. Increase the the screen RESOLUTION and click apply. If you increase it to a resolution that can't be used on your machine, you will see a screwed up screen or a blank screen. If this happens, press escape KEY and try a different setting. I suggest starting at 1024x768. If it works, leave it. Quote Sounds like you (or something) has changed the screen resoultion. Right click a blank area on the screen and select properties. Answer» Hi Everyone Is the CD scrupulously clean, scratch-free and uncracked? Well I dont think it is the cd, because I tried it with a different computer and it worked. I even tried a cd I know for fact that work but in that computer the cd-rom just dont read it. But that is not my concern for now because in the near future I'm going to replace that cd-rom drive. What I want is to learn how to copy those files to floppy disk so I can do the installation through the floppy drive. What files will I need and what will be the secuence. thanks a lot Check the MS Knowlege Base. That may or may not be possible. If your CD can't be read, that could pose a problem though.I have this old ibm computer with windows 3.11 so I buy a windows 95 cd to upgrade the OS. but the cd-rom is not reading. I already download and install the driver from the MANUFACTURER thinking that was the problem but no luck, then I inspect the physical connections to make sure the cd-rom drive power cable and the IDE drive cable are connected. The OS in the boot process recognize the presence of the cd-rom drive and don't report any problem. So I have no clue of what is causing the cd-rom drive not to read the cd. Now I hope you see why I was trying to see if it is possible to copy the needed files so I can do the installation with floppy JZDid you boot from a Win95 boot disk? That is required to load the CDROM drivers so you can load the OS. Free boot disk at www.bootdisk.com If that fails, I would get another CDROM drive and plug it in and use that. The floppy way may or may not work, the other way certainly would. |

Answer» Hi Can a PSU take an hour to warm up? Fed aren't you the electrician here? I thought it was an all or nothing deal. Any component in the system could have a bad or intermittent solder joint, a break in the board or other intermittent problem. Sometimes temperature changes, gravity, bumping, etc. can suddenly allow contact. If it happens to apply to the power circuit or logic, it can seem that the system fixes itself without cause or reason. Most folks would not wait around for an hour to see if it comes on. They'd just replace the PS or MB and be done with it. DellI read between the lines GX_Man... "I need to switch on for a least an hour to warm up the set & keep trying to press the button at the CPU." Reset, reset, reset, reset, reset....... until Dorlene flukes a power good signal. Quote 1. When the computer is powered on, the internal power supply initializes. The power supply doesn’t immediately provide power to the rest of the computer. First, it determines whether it can supply the proper voltages that the computer’s components require. The power supply sends out a POWER GOOD signal when it determines that it can supply reliable power to the rest of the computer. When the chipset receives this signal, it issues a SYSTEM RESET signal to the processor.Needs a new Power Supply Unit. |

Answer» If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it so much. I have a Compaq Presario, running Windows 98. My modem recently quit, and I had it repaired at a shop. Upon return, the computer would not let me play any on-line games. A screen came up that said, "applet not found." I DOWNLOADED java, and now the games will load (slowly) but freeze up. I have to manually shut the tower off, and re-start the computer, because even the mouse FREEZES....it also makes a weird, "chattering" noise when frozen. The shop checked it out and said nothing was wrong, even re-booted it for me. Still having the same problem. It is driving me crazy. Can anyone help? Thank you.So it works totally fine except when you are using Java to play these online games, or there are other issues? |

|
Answer» I just GOT a Dell computer from a family member and they cannot seem to find the System Recovery or Driver disks. My PROBLEM is that I am trying to install a linksys pci WIRELESS adapter and Windows keeps asking for the CD because there are some 98 files that are needed to complete the install. I am curious as to what file it is looking for? If it is looking for a driver, the nic should have come with a disk with 98 drivers on it. If not, hard wire it to the network and dl the file from linksys. I'm curious as to how you go about hardwiring a wireless adapter to a network and do downloads...Well now, that is my secret . What I ment by that obviously confusing statement was connect the computer VIA ethernet cable, if an onboard interface or nic card is present, to the router. That is assuming you have a wireless router and are not trying to connect to the neighbor . Now if you would like to hardwire the wireless card to the network, get an A to D converter, a box of resistors, some duck tape and......no.....I think I will keep that one to myself still .Contact dell......nice story......maybe someone should write a book........ |

Answer» I've written some batch files for my win98 unit which run in DOS. One makes copies of the registry files, several core system files,  my core security apps and their configuration files, user startup folder, etc. The other batch file is called from autoexec.bat and overwrites these files and folders at reboot. It's basically a system restore that runs in DOS for the more vulnerable parts of my OS. |

Download a 98 bootdisk 9free at www.bootdisk.comi cant get to anything! wont complete set-up!! tried to insert disk at start-up still wont let me do anything!! worse than i expected!!!Hit DEL and enter bios, setup 'A' drive as the 1st boot device, then boot with the downloaded bootdisk.still no luck systen will not boot through floppy drive. drive doesn't even try to run disk. tried putting cd-rom as first boot but drive does not engage to read. no response to drives but i know drives are good.son said his friend tried to fix it so i dont know what is wrong with it. i guess equal to TOTAL system crash. it is most likely a total loss so thank everyone for thier help. thanks again mike Quote i guess equal to total system crash. it is most likely a total loss so thank everyone for thier help. thanks again mike I'll bet it's not a totally useless system, but it would help to know what the "repair" involved. I predict that is what is causing the problems now. I suspect the friend monkeyed around in the BIOS, perhaps trying to flash it incorrectly. |

Answer» When I boot up the computer I receive an 0E FATAL exception error messasge. I am able to start up in safe mode and found that both drive A and drive C are using MS/DOS compatilbility mode file system. From what I've researched it sounds like a driver problem. How do I repair this. Neither the FLOPPY drive ,CD , or internet are working in safe mode. Could this be some sort of virus? No software or hardware has been added recently.Have a read: There was no security etc. installed on the unit because it was not to be used on the internet. Apparently it has been on the net. Whoops! Do you have a Windows 98 CD to reload if necessary?Try these options. Reboot and bring up the boot menu (hold down the ctrl key while booting) SELECT step by step and answer YES to each item. You will normally get a boot failure when the faulty item loads. If doesn't work, Reboot and bring up the boot menu again Select the logged option You will likely get the failure, but reboot to safe mode. Use Notepad to open c:\bootlog.txt and look at the last driver that attempted to load. That is your most likely problem. Quote What is the error message exactly?Original message: Fatal exception 0E 0028: C02DF95D VXD IOS(04)+00002031 Quote Try these options.I've been able to get a normal startup. In the bootlog I have 1 failed to load " ndis2sup.vxd " . The only problem evident is random verticlal lines on the monitor. When it boots up the boot menu appears every time with some segments flashing. I might be over my head! From the Mothership LoadFailed = ndis2sup.vxd If the network driver interface specification (NDIS) 2 support driver does not find any NDIS 2 drivers to support, the driver is not loaded. Navigate to C:\Windows\System\Iosubsys and if there's a file there NAMED Sb16.vxd, rename it to Sb16.old Reboot. |

It istalls and locks up when INSTALLING devices. I have tried updating drivers and deleting the existing partisions and the same thing happens. I also tried installing windows xp on a seperate partition and the same thing happens. Could some one help please??You have to upgrade your computer. You can add all the memory sticks you want but memory sticks are only temporary space not for storage. You hard drive is your storage. your hard drive only holds 64mb of ram you need at least a 128mb ram or hard drive to run Win. XP. Also your proessor is weak. In other words if you want to run XP replace you hard drive with a newer one also your processor or just BUY a new computer.I agree... Windows XP requires more power than what you currently have... It's in your best intrest to upgrade. Even if you could manipulate it into working without the upgrades, you're system will lag terribly, just from running the OS itself. |

UNLESS .........you have a specific reason ......which you aren't revealing . please let us know dl65 http://www.homework.com is not wot I CALL helpful. I view that as an insult, but had he direcrted me to this sites information area I would have appreciated that. The reason I asked was because I was not sure where the boot files resided and where the core files were located, and where the restore files were kept in win9x. I last used win9x in 2001. I just needed a refresher. If fed was not being cocky or insulting, then wot on earth was he INSINUATING by referring me to homework.com tell me then wot he meant? Hey, Darth, I feel like we are old friends now. Later on, possibly tomorrow, I'll check the device manager. I don't remember there being any conflicts, but I'll see. No, it's not a fresh install. Windows 95 has been on there for a good number of years. When I restart in DOS, everything works there as opposed to when I run a DOS program under Windows. That is, the programs run FINE under Windows, it just locks up when I exit out of them, and I wind up seeing a ton of vertical lines on the screen. Would it be necessary to re-install Windows to fix this issue? I don't want to have to do that unless absolutely necessary. For a lot of reasons it might be time for a fresh install. *Sigh* Might as well. I'll do that in the future, once I have replaced the CD-ROM drive and have the soundcard I want. That'll spruce up that old PC. Now that I used PCDocPro to clean up the registry, things will be EASIER. At least I'll have a BREATHER. I need to take a break from that PC and stick with my Dell for a while. |

Answer» :(Hello, Hello Soybean,Agree with Backdated. It's safe to keep. Depending on the specs and age of your system, you might notice a very slight difference in system performance between different color settings. Your hardware has to work harder to display 16-bit color than 256 color and harder to display 32-bit than 16-bit or 256 color. On modern computers, the user may notice no difference in performance. If you notice that applications are slightly slower to be displayed on screen when you first open them or when you switch between open applications or that scrolling of web pages works slightly less smooth with the 32-bit setting than with LOWER settings, that's a clue to the performance issue. And, you may not notice any difference between 16-bit and 32-bit color. My eyes can't see a difference on my monitors. Thanks for all your help. My system is about 6 years old. I do see a difference between 32-bit and 256-bit color. JohnAs Soybean SAYS, if there is a noticeable performance hit, 16 bit colour is good enough for most applications. Thanks for the help..... Answer» I have a laptop that previously was used in a business by many users.  As a consequence it is very SLOW and also has Windows 98 on it. I assumed that one of the things this would do would be to wipe the hard drive in installation thus speeding up the computer. Is this the case? If not how do I wipe clean the hard drive and then put XP on the computer? That depends on which CD you own. If you own the upgrade CD, then you can only install XP if another operating system is currently installed. If you own the full version of XP, then Windows 98 is not necessary. Let us know which CD you have, and we'd be happy to walk you through this. Flame Quote If you own the upgrade CD, then you can only install XP if another operating system is currently installed. Not quite true. You can install a clean version from an upgrade CD with no OS present. WinXP will ask you to insert an install CD from a previous and supported OS such as Win98 as proof of previous ownership. If you don't have a 98 CD or similar, use Hijackthis or similar to stop NAV dead in it's tracks and reboot. Upgrades are definitely not recommended!!!! |

If I need the Windows 95 update, can I DOWNLOAD the updates and burn into a cd to install them on the computer?what can I do about this?...It sounds like you need Windows 98SE or LATER to be successful with this, rather than just a few files that obviously have not helped.I'm surprised that you've found an ISP that supports Win95.... Or does it? Anyway, you need the 1.3 update for DUN and the WinSock2 update. If you have installed these in that order, and you still have problems then it's highly LIKELY that you have a virus infection. |

Answer» This second problem is a bit more awkward to explain. Again I'm on 98SE, not through choice. It hasn't proved as too much of a problem as most programs I use are free, so I just find another one which doesn't cause the problem but recently I've noticed that sometimes when the screen freezes a DOS prompt either half appears or appears blank on the screen. What programs are these? Are they DOS programs? Have you tried adjusting the settings for the program in WIndows? If they are DOS programs do they run in full screen DOSbox through WIndows? What if you sut down and restart in DOS mode? If Windows programs, again which ones? Are they made for Win98? Some specifics would be helpful. Quote Again I asked my friend, the linux user, and he thought it might have something to do with settings on the DOS prompt in that it's allocating all memory to the prompt and causing a crash. When an installation or program needs to use it it crashes. Again, you can adjust some settings for individual programs in regard to memory allocation, esp. DOS programs. Quote I know this machines on the way out but I can't afford another one at the moment. I'd upgrade OS but this machine would either run it sluggish or not at all. Nothing wrong with old machines. I've got a fine tuned Windows 98 box with 128 RAM which does most things as fast as some P4's I've seen with XP. (These are basic tasks, not video editing, etc.) plus you don't have to put up with XP. Quote What programs are these? Are they DOS programs? Have you tried adjusting the settings for the program in WIndows? If they are DOS programs do they run in full screen DOSbox through WIndows? What if you sut down and restart in DOS mode? They're windows programs. The latest one that did it was Nero 6. They're latest programs so I'm guessing they're not made specifically for 98 but they're compatible or I wouldnt be trying to install them. Mostly the error occurs during installation. I've tried opening the DOS prompt on its own to the same effect. How long since you reinstalled Windows? Are there other problems as well, besides the printer?Reinstalling windows doesn't do anything. Tried it a few times but it doesnt rid the problem. I had considered at one point about the level of formatting I'm doing. I usually just do a STANDARD format. One thought of mine is that its a virus lurking in the REALMS of my hard drive. With doing standard format it wouldnt be scanned by the anti-virus because it wouldnt appear on the FAT table?A good format and fdisk/mbr should make it clean as a whistle. I would not have virus anywhere near the top of my list after doing that.Seems like the only option left! Thanks |
