I recently installed Windows 98 SE on a 350MHz Pentium II with 256MB RAM. Everything went OK, but some time later I had a problem with a device driver and decided to format the HDD and reinstall the OS. I selected 'Start computer with CD-ROM support' but after running ScanDisk it gets to the following screen and stops:

Don't choose the "start computer with CDROM" option - choose the "install Windows 98" option instead.

Or better yet, if your hardware is up to it, install XP instead, or have a play with a Linux installation.  Thanks, but there isn't an 'install Windows 98' option. The three options are:
1. Start Windows with CD-ROM support
2. Start Windows without CD-ROM support
3. View the Help file.

One thing I should correct: when I wrote my post I had it booting from the CD-ROM. Now that I have changed the boot order to boot from A: it does the same thing, but ends on 'E:\>_' since D: is now a virtual drive.One other thing, Rob. I have XP Professional installed on the computer I'm using now, but the one I'm trying to set up is only for a backup machine and it doesn't justify buying another copy of XP. I just happen to have a Win98 disc, so that's why I'm INSTALLING it. Linux, on the other hand, is worth looking into, but I'll have to leave that till later when I have some time.You'll find a suitable bootdisk [highlight]here[/highlight] that loads real mode mouse and CD drivers but no virtual drive. It also contains Delpart which is a tool to delete partitions. If you want to use this, post back before doing so.

For now, we'll assume the Win98 bootdisk is in use and the machine has a single hard drive and a single CD unit. Boot from the disk and use the following COMMANDS in order:

format c: /q /u
e:
setup /ie /im /is /nr

Setup will now run and the boot diskette should be removed from the drive. Choose custom options and only install what you want installed, paying particular attention to language used etc.
You will of course need the relevant device drivers as Win98 has understandably limited native support for newer devices.Thanks for the bootdisc link. I did the format command, which did a quick format, but the next command wouldn't work - e: [enter] resulted in 'Invalid drive specification'. I tried d: with the same result.
You are right to assume it is a single HDD (1 partition) and CD-ROM. It is an old PC as are all of the devices.If you are using the bootdisk that I linked to earlier, your first CD unit is loaded at V:
Therefore, the sequence is as follows:

format c: /q /u
v:
setup /ie /im /is /nr

If it doesn't work now, you have a faulty/dirty CD unit/disk.Setup is underway, thanks a lot! When I was looking for my CD-ROM drive before I checked drive letters up to g: but I never thought it would be v:!This why I SAID to post back before using this bootdisk.
I set the drive letter as high up the chain as possible to avoid any possible conflicts. Setting it at V: GIVES room for four CD units.

The CD unit start allocation letter can be changed by editing the following line in autoexec.bat:

LH MSCDEX /D:IDECD_00 /L:V /M:20"It also contains Delpart which is a tool to delete partitions. If you want to use this, post back before doing so."

I'm sorry, but by "this" I thought you were referring to Delpart.lol.... Reading back I can SEE that now. Sorry about that. However, all's well that ends well.

If you have difficulty in identifying your hardware, download and run [highlight]Aida32[/highlight].
Once your hardware is set up and before any Microsoft updates are installed, you may wish to try the [highlight]Win98 Unofficial Service Pack[/highlight].Don't mean to second-guess you, Backdated, but the last PC I installed the USP on quickly went insane.  NP Rob.
I have to say that I've never had a problem with it yet except a couple of instances of a shutdown error. I've installed it on probably a few dozen machines.
The shutdown error in all cases would have been induced by the official M$ updates anyway.

I'm running windows 98 on a COMPAQ Presario 5151.  Here's what I think happened:  I was getting "invalid page defaults in kernal 32" error messages so I downloaded some virus scan and scanned.  It quarantined some stuff and after the quarantine all I get is this:

Error loading Explorer.exe
Must reinstall Windows

I have a CD with windows 95 bootdisk(or whatever it is called) but no luck getting things up and running.  I feel pretty stupid and just may be, but could use the help.

The Windows 95 BOOT disk uses a different version of DOS than Windows 98.  Try using a Windows 98 boot disk from here:

If you have the Windows 98 CD, you should be able to start the computer with it and reinstall Windows.  Do you have the CD and the product key?


DocIf you're OK with FDisk, you can use DelPart to obliterate the partition and start from scratch. I have a bootdisk available that contains real mode mouse and CD drivers PLUS DelPart and other tools if you want to use it.

Otherwise, boot from the Win98 bootdisk to the A:/> prompt and type the following:
format c: /q /u
x:
setup /ie /im /is /nr
Where x: is your CD ROM drive letter. Don't forget that the Win98 bootdisk installs a RAM drive at the first available slot so your CD ROMs usual drive letter will be pushed back. In other words, if it's normally at D:, it will now be at E:.

As always, choose a custom installation and install only what you want.pcdoc:  that was a typo  I have a CD that has Windows 98(not 95) stuff on it.  It actually didn't come with this computer but was borrowed from a friend.  I think it is called the bootdisk, but it is on a CD.  I can get to the part where it asks to me "start with CD-Rom Support" but after that it GETS fuzzy.  Logically I'm THINKING it should "pull" what it needs from that disk and keep going but no, it doesn't.  Boot with that CDROM then and type in the format command as above.

Then reinstall your Windows CD and type setup. That should get you off and going.

Doe anyone have simple instructions for reformatting my HARD drive and then re installing w98se, would like to have them just in case. I seem to recall something about if you use a floppy boot up you have to rename the cd rom drive two times at different c promts in order to have the pc read the cd drive, i must have those directions also. Would changing the boot order make so i could re install from the cd and not need a floppy? Lastly how do i know when to re install my main board, do i get a promy during this process of wait till after w98se gets re installed ? thanks a bunch . . .

Some WIndows CD's are BOOTABLE, others not. You can get a bootdisk at www.bootdisk.com if needed.

What kind of problems are you having that makes you consider a mainboard replacement?no problems was just wondering when i get asked to use the motherboard cd, i assume w98se cd will ask me.    Also is there some free website where i get a bootable w98se cd, i had a great deal of TROUBLE using a floppy boot last time, these s no d drive so i had to type in some weird instructions at the promts to get the pc to read my drives differently usually my d drive is dvd rom and e is the cd burner but seeing how there no real d rive i had to type in some weird specials instructions at the promts to get setup to read the e drive as g drive and therefore read my w98 cd.     Or i could always change the boot order and not need a floppy at all,  i seem to re CALL that worked floppy free a couple of years earlyier yrs earlyier on another  pc  -  bye for now

I have an old computer with 160 MB of physical memory and 546 MB of virtual memory.  I believe I made a mistake of UPGRADING to XP Professional from 98 2nd edition.  LOLZ  I don't really care about losing data if I have to reformat my DRIVE I just want as much memory available as possible.  When I insert my Windows 98 cd on boot up my computer just boots up.  How do I revert back to 98?If you don't care about losing data, then feel free to format. But I'd still back up any documents you NEED first.

Anyway, after you're ready to install 98, go into Setup/BIOS and SET the boot ORDER to boot from the CD first. You should be able to install from there.

Is it POSSIBLE to have Windows XP and Windows 98 on the same machine? If it is, do I have to MAKE another partition or something? I want windows 98 because I've herad that it's the best OS for games, since it has so little processes running.You can easily do this but you need to partition the drive and install 98 first. WHen you install XP into a separate partition, it will create a menu of which one to use at start up. Make sure that your MB and components have drivers for Win 98. I have a Dell Optiplex GX150 with no OS or CD/Hard drive. I found a hard drive with an installation of win98 on it that I tried to install on my p4 machine for dual booting. It wouldnt have it and couldnt handle the memory. So, I plugged it in to my Dell. To my suprise, it booted with no errors! What are the odds?

2 things are a bit wierd though;

1) There is no USB support. I plug in the USB whatever it is, and nothing happens. I think this is because the machine that I installed had USB 2, and this has 1.1. I have no idea what i need to remedy this, probably some file on the win98 CD (which i have) but it would need to be small enough to fit on a floppy, as the CD drive doesnt work and nor do USB sticks (duh!)

2) It cant display more than 16 colours and only supports a res of 640x480. I think this has something to do with the monitor I used during installation, and the monitor I used with another win98 machine with no problems was only plugged in today. This is not as URGENT as the first problem.

You can run Add New Hardware in Control Panel and see if that works. Dell MB's frequently have chipset drivers that should be installed for best PERFORMANCE:

I cant do a fresh install; No CD drive
I cant find a generic USB driver, nothing happens with anything I plug in. I think this is windows itself. I cant us the onboard graphics driver, its too large for a floppy disk

You can't download directly to it? Or across a network? Those have built in NIC's.

With the combination of the right chipset drivers, the USB may start to work.lol, I cant download directly to it, I only noticed when I tried to install my wireless adapter driver from a memory stick that I noticed.

Now how do I connect them?To connect directly from computer to computer you cannnot use a standard ethernnet cable, which is probably what you have. You need a crossover cable, AVAILABLE at computer stores, Radio Shack, etc., about $5. Win98 does just fine with networking. You just have to set it up.Windoze98fe had a few problems with usb. There may be patches at microsoft. networking shouldnt be a problem.

Check the plugs side by side on the network cable. If theyre exactly the same its a straight thru cable but if a pair of wires goes to diffrent pins its a xover and just what you need.

My PC is a Pentium 1 it runs on Win 95 .It cannot complete its startup and only runs in safe MODE. It does not detect CD-ROM (which it used to play quite well). It can only go as far as Staring Windows 95 and go nowhere else.
What shall I do? :-? First of all, it's time to get a new COMPUTER... have you RUN Scandisk lately? Have you changed any settings in the BIOS?

Installed new Epox Motherboard and AMD Athlon Processor. Formatted (FAT16) Primary Master "C" drive (Quantum Lightning HD). Attempted to REINSTALL WIN95 OEM "B" version. Reboot during final phase of installation resulted in following error messages. "Device IOS failed to Initialize. Windows protection Error. You must reboot your computer." You won't be able to use the Athlon Processor... Windows 95 is very, very restrictive about processors/hardware (as any other OS). I am not sure you will be able to use it with a pentium II processor. Athlon? No way. He barely supported those old AMD and Cyrix processors (I forgot their names... ), from the same period as Pentium I and Pentium MMX.
New Epox motherboard? How much RAM do you use? How big is the hdd? What video card? With your motherboard you should have some drivers. Have you used it? Although I suppose you couldn't... Because you have to be able to boot normally in Windows. We'll wait for more info.And even if it does ever boot, you will not be able to find drivers for WIn95.  i have a fujitsu siemens v2020 laptop. the specs is 1.6GHz centrino processor and 512 RAM. is there any way to improve the video card to NVIDIA or ATI or the likes of GEFORCE?

It's considered poor form to hijack SOMEONE else's thread. Always better to start a new topic as this is a new issue.

Generally laptops are NOT upgradable regarding video cards as the adapter is part of the motherboard. Check on the manufacturer's web site for this possibility, but the chances are slim. No USB video adapter is available that I am aware of.

I have a Dell laptop pentium III with windows 98 with two C partitions and one D partition.
I USE one C partition for private use (the other one i cannot acces because it can only be used with a wireless card from the university). But since yesterday when it starts windows it goes black and then C:> appears and it doesn't go through. What can i do, does anyone know what the problem is? I already tried a windows 98 floppy bootdisk

When you're are the "C:\>" PROMPT, what HAPPENS if you type "win"?

I am using Windows 98 PLUS.  Yesterday I deleted my temporary Internet files and my cookies.  Now my system boots up with the windows 98 screen and with the sign in window, but after sign in, nothing comes up.  I press Ctr-Alt-Del to see what programs are running, at first there were none.  I shut down my computer with the button in order to get the scandisk to operate upon restart.  Now when I press Ctrl-Alt-Del, I get an Explorer, Rundll32 and another Rundll32.  I restarted the computer and pressed on F8 and it took me to a window with a systemboard icon and a memory icon, a HDD-1 icon etc.  I clicked on each and it seemed to run a test on each of them.  I got an OK under each of the icons that were listed after the tests.  It seems that the programs are not loading for some reason.  Any idea of what is happening and how I can fix it?I suspect malware at work here, maybe a shell hijack. What happens in Safe Mode?
If Safe Mode seems to work OK, post BACK. If it doesn't, try this:
REBOOT to DOS, enter scanreg /restore and a series of restore points should appear. Pick the newest one prior to your PROBLEMS occurring and OK it.Thanks for your reply.  How do I get to safe mode and post back? How do I reboot to DOS mode? I am sorry, I am not a computer guru as you can see.Continually tapping the F8 key just after boot will get you to a startup menu. You can choose these options from there. Wait a little while before hitting the F8 key. You should eventually get a screen like this:

My Dad has a Tiger computer that has Win95 installed on it.  When he tried to boot the computer yesterday he got the message "invalid disk, replace and then hit any key".  At the time, he did have a CD in and I told him to remove it and try to reboot.  He removed the CD and tried to reboot, but STILL got the same message.  I tried turning the system off, checked to make sure there wasn't a disk in the DRIVE, nothing works.  My father is 75 and only uses the system for playing online solitaire...so I am trying to figure out what could be wrong without taking it in to be checked by someone ELSE.  Any ideas what could be wrong?Did you CHECK the floppy drive?

Hi. I was here about a month ago with a problem with a Dell.  Now I am having issues with an old Gateway.  It had 98 SE in it and it wouldn't stay running.  I dumped the computer and started over.  I didn't have the 98 disc so I got it from a friend along with the key.  Everything installed fine and I puttered on it for about an hour.  The next day, (yesterday) it gets as far as the Windows 98 loading screen and freezes.  I can start it in safe mode and do some stuff, but then I restart in normal mode and it freezes at the start up screen again.  I looked through the "Help" FILES on here, but didn't see anything...If anyone can help, I WOULD APPRECIATE it.  I want to just go buy a cheapy at Wal Mart, but my fiance say no for now....In the mean time I can't get my paperwork done!!!! (I work at his shop)....Thank you so much When you say dumped do you mean you reformated your computer FIRST then reinstalled it or just reinstall Windows 98 on top of the old one in hopes of just copying some files that you believe were corrupted.

ANYWAYS since the computer is blank just erase and start over again. Also note the computer is a Gateway so I do not know if they gave you a recovery CD with gateway drivers and gateway software. If the computer is stuck frozen on the Windows 98 screen loading that could just mean that something wasnt installed properrly.

If the reerasing and reinstalling doesnt help can i get the system specs on the computer?I completely erased the computer and started over.  The computer was given to me by my father in law.  I asked for all his disks he got with it.  I dumped it, and he brought me all the disks for HIS current computer...... [smiley=cry.gif]  I don't know how or why people throw stuff like that away....((I have EVERYTHING for my Dell at home.  I even considered using all of it for that Gateway, but that barely has any memory in it now, it's so old)).  Anyway, that's when I had to get the 98 from a friend.  I did have a 95 disk and installed that, then I installed the 98 over that.  It asked if I wanted to keep the 95 stuff in case I needed to uninstall 98---I said no. I am heading back to the shop (home now).  I will write down all the information from that computer and let you know later this afternoon.  The 98 I got wasn't like a regular 98 disk.  It had the folders on it and a SETUP icon.  I had to put the disk in and open the D: folder then double click the setup.  I wasn't sure how to make that work like a regular setup disk.  I know what I am saying here, but when I read it back to myself, it sounds crazy.  Sorry about that.   [smiley=embarassed.gif]1) Usually those restore disks are keyed to a particular manufacturer and model. They will NOT ever work on a different system.

2) You do not need to install Win95 first, if you are using a Win98 upgrade CD. You just boot with it and insert the Win95 CD (or floppy) when asked to verify ownership.

3) Some versions of 98 will boot and install directly from a CD. Others have to use a bootdisk to start the installation. (free at www.bootdisk.com)

I am running a sh*tty computer with Windows 98 and recently TRIED to install a better mouse, with a USB adaptor, INSTEAD of the awful serial one I have now.  It didnt work, and even after disconnecting it, the computer starts in a STRANGE mood.  The background is all pixelated and the display is weird, as if it were in safe mood.  I tried going to DEVICE manager to solve the problem and rebooted SEVERAL times after uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse software.  There doesnt seem to be any problems, conflicts, etc, but it keeps starting in this mode.  Help, please!ibble:

Try to change the display properties:

1. Right-click on the desktop wallpaper and click Properties.
2. In Display Properties, click the Settings tab.
3. Change the colors to High Color (16 Bit) or True Color (24 Bit).
4. Click Apply and OK.

If that does not work, open Display Properties again and click the Troubleshoot button.

I recently reinstalled win 98 se but when it gets to the point where is says setting up your hardware and any plug and play devices it freezes. I have turned it off several TIMES, LIKE it says to do, but each time WINDOWS 98 setup starts it's always the same. I have tried other cd and it still will not go past this point. I am very new to all this but I sure could use some help! What happened requiring the reinstall? Any other problems with the machine or any specifics about it?And do you happen to have another Win98 INSTALLATION CD that you can try?  Any exotic hardware installed in the PC?I was cleaning up my computer, it was running very SLOW, so I was doing a clean install. These nothing *censored* on it, its old and slow. I managed to get windows up and running but it tell me in my device manager that I still have problems "USB open host controller - device failure and also my PCI Ethernet controller " driver not installed correctly. I've tried the update but it tell me the driver has been installed?? :-? I TRIED to install Windows XP on computer that already had windows 98 on it.  Now I can't get either windows to WORK.  I tried to reinstall windows 98, but it keeps on trying to install XP.  This is my BOSS's computer so need to get it FIXED.     I'm sorry, but was it completely necessary to install XP?

I hope you find this guy's article convincing.More info please..  Did you first delete Win.98 or did you try to update Win.98 to XP :-?  Did you format before trying the XP install :-?  Have you backed up all critical files :-?

I didn't delete windows 98.  I just tried to load xp.  No I didn't backup files.   Sorry, more questions.

1. The Xp cd you used - is it the full version or an updater :-?
2. Did you format the hard disk :-?  If so which file system did you select, FAT.32 or NTFS :-?

The first thing you MUST do is try to backup critical files.  If you answer "Yes" to the first part of question 2 then they're gone, possibly irretrievable, but if you didn't format they might be retrievable using a Win.98 boot disk.  Is a 3.5" floppy diskette drive installed :-?  

Please let us know exactly what you did to "load" XP.

You could also try borrowing a 98SE disk.You'd be better off witth linux.  

A lot of those "restore" CD's don't work if the original hardware has changed - including the hard drive.  Compaq and HP are notorious for this. As a matter of fact I had a Compaq come through a few years AGO that did the same thing.well, i guess i can learn some new commands for linux, I can also look into Wine as well if I WANT to play any windows games on linux.

i have scraped the job of trying to get an operating system on the computer that i had forgotten the log in password for.now im working with an IBM aptiva 2171 545 .450 megahertz pentium 3 256 mb ram.13 gig harddrive.now my problem is that when i go to download xp it goes THRU the part where its getting the files,when it gets to installing the files that is where it is saying it cant read disk or find the DRIVE.i dont understand this since its been getting all the files from the disk.it wont install them though and ive ran the advisor to find any conflicting hardware or software or files and we have gotten rid of everything we can and it still wont install.can anyone help me?right now im running windows 98 first edition.am i missing a step?Did you format the drive, hopefully with FAT32 file system? After you get to the license agreement and press F8, choose to delete all of the partitions and then choose to create a partition. When you choose OK, you will be gioven a choice of how to format the drive. Choose FAT32 and then proceed.

Since you sound like you bought a new product, I'll bet the CD is OK.i dont get the option to delete partitions.it keeps asking for me to insert the cd.now after all this i get an error screen at start up saying an exception has occured.It sounds like you have hardware issues. What is the history of the machine? Known problems?im not sure about the machine,got it from work.it seemed to work fine until i went to upgrade to xp.im having all types of problems with it now.it freezes up on me now and it says THERES an exception and i have to reboot it.im suprised that it hasnt froze up on me yet.im thinking of going out and just getting a new computer.

I recently got a computer but there is one problem...its from an OLD business or SOMETHING but when it STARTS the Microsoft Network prompt comes up where you need to enter a username (already one on there) and a password..is there a way I can bypass the password to GET into the desktop?  I've also tried starting it up in safe mode and it won't start but if anyone knows of a way I can bypass this PLEAAASE let me know.

First off--I know this is a very old computer and system (Sony Vaio Model PCVE308DS purchased in 1998), and yes I will rectify that soon.

The other day when turned on it showed the Windows 98 setup wizard.  My son said it wants to reinstall windows and if I do that I will loose all my stuff (pictures, documents and programs).  Is this true?  And how can I get my stuff off the hard drive so I can save it?

There is no error message.  When the computer is turned on the windows 98 set up wizard is there---
it says: User Information
            Name: (for my name)
            COMPANY: (for my company name)

            then the back  next  cancel    buttons

that's all.  But if I fill it out again--I'm installing windows 98 again and I don't want to loose my data.

What malware protection was being used regularly?Yes Yes Yes to all.  I think I can boot to safe mode--should be able to, I do have all the original disks.  Windows 98 was the original OS and has been updated.  And Norton was used for virus protection as was spyware.  And YES that is the main problem I want to save my data and picute files.

 Thanks, TIf you can boot to safe mode and function you can copy files to a floppy, if small enough. If networked, you can boot with a Linux Live CD and copy them to a pen drive or across a network to a machine with a CDRW drive.

This installation is hosed. You need to save your data and format this drive and reinstall whatever operating system you want. This is a hopeless mess!

I have an old Windows 98SE desktop that won't shut down. It will get to the screen "It is now safe to shut off your computer" and thats it.

I have downloaded the "fix" from Windows Updates. Nothing. I Googled and found another fix from Microsoft downloaded it, nothing.

The computer is a Proteva, with Windows 98SE. I have cleaned it all up for a friend. And this is the only issue left to solve.

The computer was full of all sorts of nasties to begin with. But I did not delete any files while cleaning, but I realize there could be some corrupted files. But the computer works like a champ.

Any ideas?

if you are not on a network i sugest you uninstall the file and printer shareing optionIt's been so long since I've seen a normal Win 98SE shutdown that I can hardly remember how it's supposed to work.  I have a computer that runs Win 98SE, but it also does not shutdown the way it's supposed to.  It skips the "It is now safe to shut off your computer" screen, which is basically the opposite of your situation.  I haven't tried to resolve this because I don't use that computer very much nowdays, and, other than not displaying that screen, this causes no other problem.

 How about some specifics on the computer itself, like a make/model number and the processor, RAM, etc.? Was this a fresh install? Did you load all the appropriate drivers, especially video drivers? Do youj have a real Windows CD if you need to reinstall? What is the history of the machine? Did it used to work right?

I just installed Win95 on my old PC that I plan on using for some old flight sims. I have 2 hard drives in that system, a 10GB and a 4.3GB. The 10GB is my "C" drive, split into 5 2GB partitions. The 4.3GB drive was my "D" drive when I was running 98SE and was used as storage for downloaded files. However, it's not SHOWING up in Win95 so nothing on it is accessible - downloaded drivers, files for sims, etc. I couldn't access it using fdisk when I formatted and installed Win95, either. For some reason on my husbands old computer with Windows 98 when trying to print something off of a site USING firefox since thats what we use for a browser, it saves it and then OPENS it in paint where I cant see it or print it. How and where do I change that to open somewhere else so I can print THINGS. To change the "open with" option in W98, locate the file in question. Click to highlight the file name. Hold down the shift key and right click the file name. "Open with" will appear in the options. change the a:\ to d:\  If you use a boot disk the CDROM may be identified as e:, so experiment with that. It should tell you as it starts to boot. If you copy from a CD it will have the attributes set as a read only file, but this might not be a bad thing.

I was given a WinBook by one of my dads co workers, and it seems to have a major problem with it.  I'm just trying to figure out if its hardware failure, or software failure and if theres any real chance of salvaging it at all.  I turn it on, and after any random number of minutes COLORS on the screen will start to smear and glitch where the pointer is and it freezes completely.  And after shutting it off and trying to turn it on again it turns on but with no picture. Can anyone please give me any advice?  Its an old laptop but its good enough for what i'd want to use it for.Did it supposedly work? Do you have a WINDOWS CD to reinstall with (if this goes that far)? Is it any better or DIFFERENT in safe mode? Is the BIOS screen legible? WIll it stay visible without this video aberration?

It sounds like major hardware issues. Be advised there are few user servicable parts in laptop.The bios is where you configure your boot sequence and all that stuff right?  Or is that dos? I know that the computer is stable in all the areas except when you know its using windows  I cant re install windows cause the later steps in the installation process involve that area of windows that always glitchs and freezes.  i also tried to format my C drive but it wouldnt allow me.  (im not sure if you are allowed to if thats your only hard disk with windows installed on it?)

When I restart it and there is no picture on the screen, usually if i UNPLUG the laptop and leave it alone for a while it will start back up with picture again.  But one thing i noticed is that this laptop does not have a cooling fan. So I dont know if maybe the problem could be over heating.

And in Safe mode it seems to maybe run a little bit longer before it does the same color smear glitch, i notice its not freezing.  lol Its just really messed up and I notice that the screen is jumping too.How long, on average, does it take to boot into Windows?  Heat/lack of cooling could be the problem, but if you're booting right into windows (assuming the boot process isn't rediculously lenghty) then the speed that it overheats concerns me.

It might not be the lack of cooling.  The problem could be that the cooling you have isn't working.You cannot format your drive from within Windows. There are multiple tutorials on the internet about how to install Windows, but you will need a legal CD to do so. If you want to proceed, then let us know what you have to work with. Obviously you have not done this before.The computer was given to me without the original disk so I cant do anything there.  

The average time it takes to boot is normal, nothing lengthy.

This is EITHER a bad video adapter (not repairable) or bad drivers. If WinBook is still around you might check their website for the most recent drivers for this and install. It's worth a shot.cool, thanks.  I'll try the drivers.

i even checked the firewall settings and INCLUDED yahoo under exceptions, but it still is not connecting..WHATs THE WAY OUT?You might install a different firewall, such as ZoneAlarm, and see how that works for you.  Do not run two firewalls simultaneously.

I borrowed a notebook with Windows 98 installed. The resolution was light so I tried to change it and now I have the largest icons ever on my screen. Is there a system restore to an earlier point in Windows 98 LIKE there is with XP? If so can someone please guide me through it. I certainly do not want to return the computer like it is now.

Can you change your screen resolution? RIGHT click on desktop and choose Properties, SETTINGS and pick some higher numbers like 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768.I went to Display Properties, then settings and clicked on the screen area and moved the dial to less. Now I can't move it back to more. It's set at 640x480. That's the lowest setting and the dial will will not move at all.Then I would suggest reinstalling the video driver. What make and MODEL is this? What driver shows in DEVICE Manager under Display Adapter? What else changed on the laptop in the time you had it? Did you monkey with any other settings?I don't have access to the video driver so I'm going to have to take it to someone to see if they can fix it before I have to give it back.

All I know is I went to change the pixels and now I can't change it back to the original settings.

If it ain't broke don't fix it applies to me right about now. I should have left well enough alone.

How about if you delete the Display Adapter in control panel and reboot the machine. What happens now.It's a Gateway Solo. How do I delete the Display Adapter?Control Panel, Device Manager, Click on Display adapter and right click, then choose delete. Before you do this what does it say?

:-/For Windows 95, my CD-Rom LOST it's DRIVER and does not work. So everything has to be done with floppys. I tried using a windows 95 start-up disk to get a driver loaded. No help there. You don't see any thing offensive in your prior post? Calling someone in other words a crook is not offensive? Microsoft got it's money for selling it's product onece. Microsoft is NOT the registery of motor vehicles of computers. I bought the used computer with it's program, just like you get the keys to a used car you would buy. You're not sold the car minus an ignition and door/trunk locks.

The EULA mostly is saying, any one other than origional owner is not offered support or guarantees. They also don't guarantee a copy of their product to work. Ironic this doesn" mention anything about their re-cirtification process available.

patio.   8-)The only one that used the term crook is you. To transfer an opertaing system you must get the EULA, COA and hopefully the software itself. Which of those did you get? I don't think you read through the EULA but anyway you can get a copy. Just because it is unsupported does not mean it is not bound by the licensing, it is abandonware or that it is non-functional. I've disabled the password feature and I get an error saying that Explorer caused an illegal operation.

That could be a problem.  Many of the Linux GUIs assume a minimum resolution of 1024*768, which may irritate!

You could start with >this< VectorLinux version.  Use the iceWM or XFCE window managers for speed.  They may be okay on lower resolutions.  YMMV.

Go to the software FAQ (see my signature) and download DeepBurner.  You may also want to obtain >md5summer< - you can then check the md5 sum of your download against >this<.  If they don't match up, you know that you need to download again (otherwise you'll just end up burning yet another holographic coffee coaster)...

Once you've got it burnt, just boot from the CD.

Fips it Self is a Bootable Program , You'll want to Put it on a Different Disk

I would Put Fips on a Dos Boot Disk Separate to my Linux Disk.

As you can't boot two Programs off one Disk(With out Writing your won Boot program), Fip's can Fit on a Floppy so i don't see this to be a problem.

You don't need a boot disk for the FIPS stuff.  Just boot to DOS.  Get FIPS on that machine by whatever means you have available - plonking it on a CD (all on its own... aah...) would be fine.

I wouldn't recommend attempting to add FIPS to a Linux CD.  You'd need to extract all the Linux files from the ISO, add in FIPS and burn your own bespoke compilation.  Not worth the hassle.

Good luck downloading FIPS.  I can't get a response from the FTP server.  You might need to google for a mirror.

I just GOT a second hand computer but need to format it (windows 98). I have the rite floppy disks but need the RIGHT ms-dos coads. I realy need to know because I want to USE my computer (INSTEAD of my neighbours). Please help me!!!By coads do you mean CD? If so, then check on eBay, garage sales, etc. and GET one with a valid COA number to install.

I had a friend call me today about her computer. Iasked her what the problem was and she said that the screen goes blank after she boots up.Her computer is a DELL and she said that her sister install a firewall anti-virus, and spyware program.she said thats when she started to have problems.She can boot into SAFEMODE and i told her to delete the programs and reboot. Shedid that and is still having problems.She couldn't tell me what programs that was put on it all she knew was that it blanked the monitor and and she couldn't boot normally.Does anyone have any idea as to what could cause this.

It is very hard to treat a computer problem third hand like this. As you don't have the machine and no one seems to know specifically very much, she may be better served taking it to the shop.Reboot and hold down the Ctrl key while booting. From the menu select "Command prompt only". At the C:> prompt type scanreg/restore then select a DATE prior to the problem starting. The system files and registry will be restored to what they were on that date. Reboot normally.2k_dummy,
                  Is this for a 98se system to restore it to a previous date because the op in question is a 98se on a dell optiplex gx1p . got ahold of my freind and she tried what you said to do and she went back to the 7-16-06 date and it said restore FAILED. She tried another date and that failed to.As i was typing this she called and said while in safe mode, a window appeared about the firewall that was installed an said the she couldn't connect to the internet until your firewall was configured. i told her to disable the firewall for now. Also found out that the anti-virus is mcafee that was installed. so i do have some more info at least.Any thing else you can suggest for me to tell her to do?

i am missing the SYSTEM.INI file from my computer.  I have tried booting with every OPTION available.  I have a hp pavailion.  I can't find the system recovery or application recovery discs for my computer.  I down loaded a boot disc for 98 but it did not do anything.  How did this whole file come up missing? That is critical for Windows function and it grows as more programs are loaded, system settings change, etc. so you can't borrow someone else's. I fear you are lookng at a reinstall.  :-/First try this.

You might even be able to rename the System.bak or .nnn file using a bootdisk (bootdisk.com).

Good luckmy sister was uninstalling some unused programs and deleted that file on an accident.  I got a boot disk from bootdisc.com,  but the computer won't read it.  i put it on a cd, and CHANGED the bios settings.  Try rebooting and hold down the ctrl key while the system boots. A menu should come up. Select Command prompt only. At the c:&GT; prompt type scanreg/RESTORE. Select a DATE prior to the disaster and restore the backup that was in effect on that date. Reboot.

This COULD be the dumbest QUESTION you've ever answered, but I just really need to know if I can do anything with my obsolete WIN98 operating system (none of my programs are compatible, they need MINIMUM of WIN98 SE)  - yet I don't want to spend any money right now . The other option is, bite the bullet and buy a new computer....I know, I know!  But I THOUGHT I'd ask, just in case....

I will shortly recieve a 486 laptop running Windows 95. It has minimal specs and only 8mb ram. Is it possible to use broadband with it?

Also, I may not be able to free up my current modem, so will my spare 28.8kbps modem work with a broadband connection (Yes, I know, it will be verrrry slow)Your ISP or modem will probably list some minimum requirements.Is that "spare" modem intended for a laptop or is it simply an external modem that can be used with any COMPUTER?

To use a 28.8kbps modem, you'll need to setup a dialup Internet connection for your ISP in Windows 95.  Does your ISP provide dialup numbers?  

Even though using that modem would yield a very slow Internet connection, that laptop would have difficulty handling a DSL line at full DSL speeds.  Web browsing would be choppy/jerky.  Still, an actual DSL connection might provide a much faster web browsing experience than the 28.8 modem.  

However, if you were able to actually use the DSL connection on that laptop, you need to consider other things.  Can you find firewall software that will run on it?  I rather doubt it.  And, what about spyware removal software and anti-VIRUS software that will run on it?  I suggest forgetting the IDEA of using that laptop on the Internet except perhaps as a backup computer for Internet access via the 28.8K modem in case you can not get online with your main computer.I'm not going to use this as a serious machine, I just want to see if I can do it.

I would guess so, but just checking.If you don't use it for email, that will reduce the risk of viruses.  And, I would guess running DOS and browsing with Arachne is less risky, as FAR as picking up malware/spyware, than using Internet Explorer.  But, I'm really not sure about this.  I'm not familiar with Arachne.

I use Earthlink as the ISP underlying the DSL service which actually billed to me by my telephone service provider, EMBARQ (formerly Sprint).  I can go to Earthlink's website and find a dialup number for my area and use it to connect with a dialup modem.

I used to have Windows 98 on this OLD laptop that only has 16 RAM and 192 MHZ processor, and the system was totally infested with spyware and viruses, and since the computer barely moves without all that crap it was VERY slow with all that crap there. So I installed Red Hat 7 on it but the internet didn't work. I couldn't reinstall Windows 98 because it has no floppy drive, and the Windows 98 disk isn't bootable. Now I remembered that Nero has an option to make a bootable disk, and I made that bootable disk with Windows 98 on it too. The disk boots into DOS and when I type "format C:" it says "Invalid drive, or format not supported." Another odd thing is that the drive thats autimatically selected is A:\&GT; and when I type "dir" it gives a short list of files that are obviously only the bootable part on the CD. I also tried "format A:-Z:" and for A and B it said "Insert target diskette into drive A/B and press ENTER when ready..." Also, when I try to change to the D drive (cd D:) NOTHING happens, it just goes back to "DR-DOS A:\>_"Is this a copy of Win98 ? ? A real Win98 CD is bootable and would be able to do what you need...

Okay so I have this COMPUTER which I salvaged in my room, it has Windows 98, 3 Gigs of Memory, 64 MB of RAM and a crappy video card. Generally a bad computer in general, but all I really want it for is MSN and Word.   So anyways, it was running okay, crashing occasionally and freezing if I ran too many programs etc... (btw, if ANYONE can reccommend a solution to the crashes and freezes that'd be great). So one day, I boot the old girl up and I get a error message saying: Msgrv32 followed by MSGRV32 caused a segment not present fault in module SETUPX.dll at 0002:00005701, this message is followed by a lot of computer code and script which I dont understand but will be more than happy to provide, if it helps you solve my problem.

This message pops up everytime I start up the computer now and always just before the windows starts (so I have the background, but no icons, no start menu etc..), and when I click on CLOSE or the X in the top right the computer like cancels start up. It just sits on that screen, and when I hit CTRL ALT DELETE, it shows no programs running. So it hasnd FROZEN per se, but its just not moving lol. Can anyone help me with this problem? I would really appreciate it, because I want to have a computer in my room and not deal with like trying to get a chance at the family unit.

What kind of file(s) are you downloading?

Have you done a "search" for the downloaded file after you've rebooted?

Processor is Intel 233 MMX
HDD: 3.2 GB

single partition on hard drive
CD ROM drive.
NO floppy drive.
The problem I am having is this:
I had Win98 installed. I upgraded to W2k, but am dissatisfied with the performance, understandable, given the SYSTEM specs., but now I want to downgrade to 98 again, and can not get a good bootable CD to start the system with. I made a boot disk using NERO, and it boots the system just fine, but won't let me format the drive. When I open my 98 setup.exe file, it refuses to complete setup.
I need an ISO of a windoze 98 boot disk, so I can use fdisk, and format to get this system running again. When I boot from the Nero made CD, it starts Caldera DR-DOS. The fdisk and format don't work like the MS versions do.
Please help, I have tried everything I can think of.

p.s.s   The correct cabling for hard drives is the master goes at the end of the cable and the slave takes the middle connector, not the other way around.

If you had run Everest it would have shown both drives.

This is very strange, I have xp pro on a homemade computer. My son plays video games on it nonstop, but thats another story Yesterday it SUDDENLY started tring to boot on windows 98. Now at one TIME I did have 98 on this hard drive but that was years ago and it has been formated many times SINCE. The processor, memory and mother board have always ran on xp.

Of course it cannot find any 98 files for they are not there. I booted it up on a old norton disk and it ran normal. I ran the virus scan from my yahoo browser and the spyware detector. Then I went to microsoft and updated the latest patch.

Restarted and back to 98 again :-?  I do not know how to do the registery my skills are more rip out boards and start over lol.

Using Windows Classic Desktop?It never gets that far, just a black screen with white type that says something about windows 98 having problems finding files... Any disks in any slots?I know there is not a cd, But I will check for floppys as soon as I get home.I checked and there are no disks. I can get it to start by hitting escape right as it boots and choosing hard drive cLet's save ourselves some time.
