Solve : Downgrade from XP Professional to Windows 98 2nd? |
Answer» I have an old computer with 160 MB of physical memory and 546 MB of virtual memory. I believe I made a mistake of UPGRADING to XP Professional from 98 2nd edition. LOLZ I don't really care about losing data if I have to reformat my DRIVE I just want as much memory available as possible. When I insert my Windows 98 cd on boot up my computer just boots up. How do I revert back to 98?If you don't care about losing data, then feel free to format. But I'd still back up any documents you NEED first. |

Solve : Windows 98 and XP? |
Answer» Is it POSSIBLE to have Windows XP and Windows 98 on the same machine? If it is, do I have to MAKE another partition or something? I want windows 98 because I've herad that it's the best OS for games, since it has so little processes running. You can easily do this but you need to partition the drive and install 98 first. WHen you install XP into a separate partition, it will create a menu of which one to use at start up. Make sure that your MB and components have drivers for Win 98. Many new ONES do not.Well in that case, SCREW thatAs robpomeroy once said: That's the spirit! LOLNo easy way for a good PROJECT!Partition magic and other similar tools will allow you to partition and install another os without losing data. |

Solve : Ms Win 95 playing horror? |
Answer» My PC is a Pentium 1 it runs on Win 95 .It cannot complete its startup and only runs in safe MODE. It does not detect CD-ROM (which it used to play quite well). It can only go as far as Staring Windows 95 and go nowhere else. It can only go as far as Staring Windows 95 and go nowhere else.Quote It cannot complete its startup and only runs in safe modeHow could it get into safe mode if it doesn't get past Starting Windows 95...? Do you have any ANTIVIRUS? If you do, TRY scanning for viruses. That's about all I can suggest. -John |

Solve : Unable to Boot WIN95 in Safe Mode? |
Answer» Installed new Epox Motherboard and AMD Athlon Processor. Formatted (FAT16) Primary Master "C" drive (Quantum Lightning HD). Attempted to REINSTALL WIN95 OEM "B" version. Reboot during final phase of installation resulted in following error messages. "Device IOS failed to Initialize. Windows protection Error. You must reboot your computer." Upon reboot, SYSTEM enters Startup Menu. Selecting Safe Mode results in the same error message! I have tried all MS related/proposed solutions except installing the "AMD" FIX and installing SP1. The latter can only be installed via Windows (not via an MS DOS prompt). It is a "Catch 22" situation! Does anyone know of another solution or if possible, how to install SP! and *.exe fixit :help: file into WIN95 from floppies via an MS DOS prompt???SP1 and Win95? That does not compute. :-? The AMD fix will be required, and even that may not work depending on processor.Well... We need more info. Windows 95 was an OS for 1995, not for 2006. You won't be able to use the Athlon Processor... Windows 95 is very, very restrictive about processors/hardware (as any other OS). I am not sure you will be able to use it with a pentium II processor. Athlon? No way. He barely supported those old AMD and Cyrix processors (I forgot their names... ), from the same period as Pentium I and Pentium MMX. |

Solve : Windows 98, boots but won't load programs? |
Answer» I am using Windows 98 PLUS. Yesterday I deleted my temporary Internet files and my cookies. Now my system boots up with the windows 98 screen and with the sign in window, but after sign in, nothing comes up. I press Ctr-Alt-Del to see what programs are running, at first there were none. I shut down my computer with the button in order to get the scandisk to operate upon restart. Now when I press Ctrl-Alt-Del, I get an Explorer, Rundll32 and another Rundll32. I restarted the computer and pressed on F8 and it took me to a window with a systemboard icon and a memory icon, a HDD-1 icon etc. I clicked on each and it seemed to run a test on each of them. I got an OK under each of the icons that were listed after the tests. It seems that the programs are not loading for some reason. Any idea of what is happening and how I can fix it?I suspect malware at work here, maybe a shell hijack. What happens in Safe Mode? |

Solve : Windows 95 problems booting system? |
Answer» My Dad has a Tiger computer that has Win95 installed on it. When he tried to boot the computer yesterday he got the message "invalid disk, replace and then hit any key". At the time, he did have a CD in and I told him to remove it and try to reboot. He removed the CD and tried to reboot, but STILL got the same message. I tried turning the system off, checked to make sure there wasn't a disk in the DRIVE, nothing works. My father is 75 and only uses the system for playing online solitaire...so I am trying to figure out what could be wrong without taking it in to be checked by someone ELSE. Any ideas what could be wrong?Did you CHECK the floppy drive? |

Solve : Windows 98 Freezes!!!? |
Answer» Hi. I was here about a month ago with a problem with a Dell. Now I am having issues with an old Gateway. It had 98 SE in it and it wouldn't stay running. I dumped the computer and started over. I didn't have the 98 disc so I got it from a friend along with the key. Everything installed fine and I puttered on it for about an hour. The next day, (yesterday) it gets as far as the Windows 98 loading screen and freezes. I can start it in safe mode and do some stuff, but then I restart in normal mode and it freezes at the start up screen again. I looked through the "Help" FILES on here, but didn't see anything...If anyone can help, I WOULD APPRECIATE it. I want to just go buy a cheapy at Wal Mart, but my fiance say no for now....In the mean time I can't get my paperwork done!!!! (I work at his shop)....Thank you so much When you say dumped do you mean you reformated your computer FIRST then reinstalled it or just reinstall Windows 98 on top of the old one in hopes of just copying some files that you believe were corrupted. |

Answer» I recently reinstalled win 98 se but when it gets to the point where is says setting up your hardware and any plug and play devices it freezes. I have turned it off several TIMES, LIKE it says to do, but each time WINDOWS 98 setup starts it's always the same. I have tried other cd and it still will not go past this point. I am very new to all this but I sure could use some help! What happened requiring the reinstall? Any other problems with the machine or any specifics about it?And do you happen to have another Win98 INSTALLATION CD that you can try? Any exotic hardware installed in the PC?I was cleaning up my computer, it was running very SLOW, so I was doing a clean install. These nothing *censored* on it, its old and slow. I managed to get windows up and running but it tell me in my device manager that I still have problems "USB open host controller - device failure and also my PCI Ethernet controller " driver not installed correctly. I've tried the update but it tell me the driver has been installed?? :-? Like I say it's old...how do I find what driver I need now ....I really appericate the help /meI have tied 2 different CD"S and it still kept freezing Quote These nothing *censored* on itEr... I said exotic! You have problems with the drivers for onboard hardware - USB and LAN. The drivers can probably be found on the web site for your motherboard manufacturer. What make of PC is it? :-[I meant to say exotic..... I got the computer from someone else 3 years ago !!!!! There is nothing writen on the outside of the computer, I don't know what the name is.....Am I lost now or can I find out if I remove the tower lid?? The monitor I got last week its a NEC mulitsync M700. I know that doesn't help with the name of my computer, anyway I can find out. I have tried to start windows setup again, but now when I enter my product key for my CD, it tell me it's invalid... :-? and it stll freezes at windows setup hardware. I had the same problem. Take all of the PCI cards out except the video card and try to reinstall win 98 it should work.. and after it is installed turn off the computer and put the cards ONE-BY-ONE and turn on the computer and see if it works and then turn it of and then put the next card in and etc. and see on the one that it fails on and that PCI Card would be the problem..Thanks Mak....I did what you said and now every things loads great... But when I connect to the internet, I can only stay online for about 3-4 mins, then I get booted out. I restart my computer and I can connect again for about another 3-4 mins.... :-? I ran a scan and it shows no problems....what the heck is happening NOW ...HELP ME PLEASE [smiley=cry.gif]Is that a dialup connection?I have high speed internet, it says I have a problem with my USB open host controller. When I start my computer now it says installing new hardware....it searches, then it freezes again. I went in under safe mode and it tells me no USB devices... :-? I am going to download the program from major geeks and see if that can locate it. I'm not sure what I should be doing...am I making things worse? P.S. Solve : Windows 98 SE won't shutdown? |
Answer» I have an old Windows 98SE desktop that won't shut down. It will get to the screen "It is now safe to shut off your computer" and thats it. Does Win 98SE startup normal after a shutdown? In other words, it doesn't go through that scandisk routine? If so, I think one option is to do nothing. I actually had that problem with the same computer that I mentioned above, but that was before a formatting of the hard drive and reinstalling Win 98SE. And, I never resolved it; again, turning off the power at that screen seemed to cause no problem. So, I've had two different abnormal shutdown behaviors with Win 98SE on the same computer. soybean, Yes the computer restarts fine. No going to scandisk first. And its not a big deal to just hold in the power button to shut it down. I had Googled and found several things from suggesting to update video and sound drivers to links to Microsoft. I did install a extra link beside what was listed in Microoft Updates. This old computer had never had 1 single Microsoft Update installed in it. It still had IE 5 on it. I had to install IE 6 before the Microsoft Updates would EVEN work. For that matter it had no AV protection at all. No malware protection, flat nothing. panboy, The computer was not on a network, it was all by itself on a dialup internet connection. Though it did have a printer intalled on it. Which the person asked me to not uninstall it. Are you absolutely sure that computer is designed to shutdown - meaning power off - automatically? My Win 98SE computer is a 10 1/2 year old computer, originally a 75MHz Pentium with 8MB RAM and Win 95, later upgraded with an overdrive processor which boosted it to 200 MHz w/MMX, along with MEMORY upgrades ending at 128MB and other upgrades. But, it, and most, if not all, computers of that vintage had to be turned off manually. I have the computer and the monitor connected to it plugged into a surge protector. I just leave power switches on the monitor and computer in the ON position and turn them on and off via the switch on the surge protector. The shutdown screen you're talking about was merely a notification to the user that it's OKAY to turn the power off now.Its a possibilty that it did not shut off by itself. I actually have not ask the owner if it did. I should ask . I assumed it may have been related to all the problems that it did have. To coin a phrase I have seen on here, it was pretty crappity smacked. This owner said this unit was new in 98. To the best of my knowledge this is the only OS thats been on it. Thanks,Well, either that computer is not quite as old as the owner said, or it originally had Win 98 (first edition) on it. Wikipedia says Windows 98 Second Edition (Windows 98 SE) was released on May 5, 1999. You might check the BIOS for a setting that enables or disables ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) capability. I believe ACPI is the technology involved in the AUTOMATIC shutdown capability. How would I get into BIOS on this old machine to check this setting? The owner could be MISTAKEN on the age. It has a sticker on it (Not anything Microsoft) that says something about being compliant with the year 2000. So it probably was built in 99.oh i dident read your frist post right , if it says "it is now safe to shut down" then its ok it has shut down , and you can pull the plug or hit the power button. and if your computer is ACPI then you should be able to set it so it will turn off outomaticly. if you enter your Bios Most machines today use the Delete key for bios. but some dont , i would try the F2 , F3 and F5 buttons also it should tell you what key to push at the bottom during post, eg "Press F2 to enter setup"You should see an onscreen prompt during boot like "Press Del to enter setup" or such.F2 took me into setup. In the "power management settings" I did not see ACPI (I assumed this would be where to look for it, for that matter I did not see it anywhere). But I did see something called APM and it was enabled. I also saw in another spot "Plug and play O/S" and beside it was a NO. Should this be different? I saw at the bottom of the screen there appeared to be a setting to return things to a default setting. Is this anything to do? Thanks,As for the Plug and Play OS , as far as i know it dosent do anything, If your computer dosent have ACPI then it wont Ever turn it self Off, but it dose shut down , so you dont have to worry about killing your files by hitting the power button, as long as it says safe to shutdown its ok to hit the power button |

Solve : Windows 95 hard drive question? |
Answer» I just installed Win95 on my old PC that I plan on using for some old flight sims. I have 2 hard drives in that system, a 10GB and a 4.3GB. The 10GB is my "C" drive, split into 5 2GB partitions. The 4.3GB drive was my "D" drive when I was running 98SE and was used as storage for downloaded files. However, it's not SHOWING up in Win95 so nothing on it is accessible - downloaded drivers, files for sims, etc. I couldn't access it using fdisk when I formatted and installed Win95, either. Any ideas on what I can do to get my data?If you are using Win95A it can only see and use FAT16 partitions. Win95 B and C can use FAT32. How are the drives set up with operating system, file system, etc. |

Solve : Windows 98 and setting it to print? |
Answer» For some reason on my husbands old computer with Windows 98 when trying to print something off of a site USING firefox since thats what we use for a browser, it saves it and then OPENS it in paint where I cant see it or print it. How and where do I change that to open somewhere else so I can print THINGS. It isnt the printer because I trouble shot that and it prints a test page fine. :-?Save what you want to print, right click on the icon for the saved item, and click "Print" or "Open With" (Today at 2:29pm) WendyLJ has sent you the following Personal Message:In order to print .pdf files from Firefox, she will need Acrobat Reader installed as a plugin. Otherwise, when files are saved to disk, she can follow the above instructions and select Acrobat Reader to open the files in Windows. Either way should allow printing of .pdf files (apparently the files in question).Thank u all. I got Acrobat Reader downloaded for him and that solved the whole problem but it was also great finding out how to get to "open with" on Windows 98 |

Solve : Windows 98 on a WinBook? |
Answer» I was given a WinBook by one of my dads co workers, and it seems to have a major problem with it. I'm just trying to figure out if its hardware failure, or software failure and if theres any real chance of salvaging it at all. I turn it on, and after any random number of minutes COLORS on the screen will start to smear and glitch where the pointer is and it freezes completely. And after shutting it off and trying to turn it on again it turns on but with no picture. Can anyone please give me any advice? Its an old laptop but its good enough for what i'd want to use it for.Did it supposedly work? Do you have a WINDOWS CD to reinstall with (if this goes that far)? Is it any better or DIFFERENT in safe mode? Is the BIOS screen legible? WIll it stay visible without this video aberration? |

Solve : windows 95 missing sys files? |
Answer» :-/For Windows 95, my CD-Rom LOST it's DRIVER and does not work. So everything has to be done with floppys. I tried using a windows 95 start-up disk to get a driver loaded. No help there. I tried downloading the driver to a floppy and installing it from the floppy, did no work. Now when I start the computer I get the following.......................... the Mitsumi Double Speed CD-Rom in Safe Mode from the Bootdisk? This hardware is a piece of history and I'm sure most folks here have never even seen one of these. The drivers were proprietary, and frequently ran off their own CONTROLLER card or off a supported sound card. (It would have saved some time if you mentioned this dinosaur in your first post!) Did this work correctly before? Where does the other end of the IDE CD cable hook in? And no changes to the hardware since when it worked and now? Or was this just added to the machine? I would suggest borrowing a later generation CD drive (8x or later) at least for the installation, and maybe permanently. If it hasn't failed yet, it probably will soon. What model is that drive? You may try doing a google search for the model number and the word "driver". Just out of curiosity who else here has dealt with a Mitsumi 2x drive? Show of hands?jesus, how old is this relic you call a computer? i would kill the thing trying to use it for what i use mine... EDIT: btw, COMMAND.COM is a DOS file... i remember this from having to format ole computers from the win 98 cd, D:\win98\format.com i belive was the file path...I am fixing it for a friend, but it seems I'm not going to be able to fix it! So I'm going to install my old CD-Rom, NEC, and hopefully it will allow me to get to Windows from there! [size=16][/size]Thanks for your help. I'll Post after I get it in!But I am curious. Where did the CD data cable plug in? Don't tell me the motherboard. |

Solve : Windows 98 Cleanup and Optimization Software? |
Answer» I have a Windows 98 computer that has a TON of junk on it. I do not wish to format and loose all of my data. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with ccleaner...yet. its not really a problem, its just that my CD burning software made a database on files it can recongnize, and i just dont have ALL of those file TYPES on my comp. heres a few... .idx .cue .ccd .nrg .VOB and so on. i just de-select "unused file extensions" under registy integrety so i dont have to see them.Ok. I didn't know that CCleaner worked on Windows 98. But I found a version that did, and it worked well. I also found a program called "Registry Defragmenter" that just rebuilds the registry for AN ENTIRE HALF HOUR EACH TIME YOU START YOUR COMPUTER. (I am going to go back, and delete it. It works, but is WAY to slow. ) I have fixed all 542 issues that Ccleaner found on my computer.u MIGHT as well scandisk and defrag while ur into the whole "optimization thing" |

Solve : Windows 98se begins to start, then...? |
Answer» Get a real CD and your problems are solved. To GXI Man, I had in the past gone to the microsoft site looking for updates (which are no longer available, microsoft does not support this system any more), and I got a re-cirtification thru the process. Somewhere there is a file on my computer of this re-cirtification.? Did you pay any money to Microsoft at that time? For Win9x, if you don't have the COA and/or original media, there isn't actually any other way of confirming that you have a right to run the software. Imagine if you'd bought a CD of your favourite band. You took a copy of the CD as a backup, then lost the original. You no longer have any proof that you owned the original; and I'm afraid no one would take your word for it. That reason has been used untruthfully too many times. Going back to your problem, we have even LESS means of verifying the legality of what you're trying to do, and what we cannot do is post information that would enable or encourage anyone else reading this public forum to breach copyright laws. Tucker's eBay suggestion is your best bet - you'll find media and COAs aplenty there; some legit, some not. Take whichever choice your conscience and your wallet are comfortable with. There's no point railing against the intellectual property system just because you don't like it by the way. These are the rules; this is the LAW. If you lose something and it's not insured, you would have to pay to REPLACE it. You've lost something (your COA) and now you can expect that you'll have to pay to replace it. Sorry, but if you want to be legal, that is your only realistic option. Answer» At least you had an external drive. I had to back up to a cassette RECORDER! I havent used win 95 in like 10 years!! Im so excited!!!Utterly baffling. You might be able to BAG some C64 spares on eBay. Yes, I had to get rid of my TI eventually so I could move to newer technology. <--------------------I wonder what its going to be like when I'm 50 , and I'm telling people of the Advent of Windows Revolutionary GUI'S and how My Massive PC was a WHOLE 266MHz They'll Be Amazed! Of course the First time i used a PC it Was a 286 and was running dos, but that was in my First Year off School and the whole School had to share one Computer. It had a game on it to learn how to Spell, ... it put up a picture of an Egg and you then had to type in Egg, that would have been fine , only i couldn't tell that the picture was an Egg |

Solve : Windows 98 Skins? |
Answer» Quote QuoteDo you know what the software title was?QuoteYesThanksDid you use a skin to get your start menu and windows to appear like that? (Or the skin name and the program needed to run it?) Quote QuoteOk Rob. I will download Fips.I already use Microsoft Windows Themes, but they are boring now. I am looking for a completely NEW look.>Completely free new look; will run on older hardware<. How do I install Vector LINUX? (Yes, I did read instructions. But I never really knew how to install it at all. The ISO file instructions are very hard to understand. I have plenty of blank CD's. ) And how do I use Fips to make another drive? And whats this about a boot manager? ROB! YOUR FIPS LINK DOESENT WORK! I FEEL HOPELESS Ergh i want say things but no make english goot If you cant Get rob's program , you can try Bootit NG, but its not as good http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ It can Resize Drives as well Quote How do I install Vector Linux? Can you boot from the VectorLinux CD? If you do this after you used FIPS to free up space, the installation program should guide you through the process. Do backup your data first. Quote ROB! YOUR FIPS LINK DOESENT WORK! I FEEL HOPELESSOh! The home pages has moved. Thanks for the heads up. I have corrected the link in the software FAQ, so you can download it now. Quote QuoteOk, when I said I don't have a single idea on how to install Linux, I wasn't kidding. How do I install Vector Linux? Can you boot from the VectorLinux CD? If you do this after you used FIPS to free up space, the installation program should guide you through the process. I really don't know where to start. I don't know what version of Vector Linux I want or anything. I can start a Knoppix "slaxware" CD, but my screen cannot handle 1024x768 resolution, just 800x600. I can answer any question to make this easy as possible... (And I don't know what to do with an ISO file. I don't have any ISO programs. ) Quote but my screen cannot handle 1024x768 resolution, just 800x600.That could be a problem. MANY of the Linux GUIs assume a minimum resolution of 1024*768, which may irritate! You could start with >this< VectorLinux version. Use the iceWM or XFCE WINDOW managers for speed. They may be okay on lower resolutions. YMMV. Quote (And I don't know what to do with an ISO file. I don't have any ISO programs. )Go to the software FAQ (see my signature) and download DeepBurner. You may also want to obtain >md5summer< - you can then check the md5 sum of your download against >this<. If they don't match up, you know that you need to download again (otherwise you'll just end up burning yet another holographic coffee coaster)... Once you've got it burnt, just boot from the CD. Quote QuoteThank you so much! Its on my priority list for tomorrow.but my screen cannot handle 1024x768 resolution, just 800x600.That could be a problem. Many of the Linux GUIs assume a minimum resolution of 1024*768, which may irritate! Hopefully, I will be able to figure it all out. One quick question before I end up killing myself from confusion: Can Linux be started from DOS? Thanks Ive Seen a Few Linux Installers that can be Started from dos, but you would be Better off Booting off the Linux disk After you Burn it , just Boot off fit the Same way you would A windows CDOk. Thanks, Panboy. Rob: If I get all the ISO stuff onto the disk, can I still add Fips to the disk? I am wondering because I dint want to cause any problems installing, you now, in case it does something with the Fips file, like copies it, or messes up the installation... (I wish I had Internet in my room, it would make everything easier) CMLS (I need an acronym for the letters CMLS. Like DMSCB=Dead Monkeys Smell Bad... or EGBDF.... etc...if you can think of any, send me a PM)Fips it Self is a Bootable Program , You'll want to Put it on a Different Disk Thats Wrong Bad Panboy! I would Put Fips on a Dos Boot Disk Separate to my Linux Disk. As you can't boot two Programs off one Disk(With out Writing your won Boot program), Fip's can Fit on a Floppy so i don't see this to be a problem. [edit][timestamp=1153217219][/edit] Quote Fips it Self is a Bootable Program , You'll want to Put it on a Different DiskWell, the only problem is that I don't have a computer with a floppy hooked up to the Internet. I will see what Rob says...You can Make a Dos Boot CD with Nero , Nero Come with a Version of "Nero Dos" you can Used for making boot CD's it ASLO has the Ability to use an image of a Boot Floppy and Convert it in to a Boot CD, Ill see if i can Find some Help Doc's for this I think there may also be a Boot Disk image For CD's on Robs Webpage, or in the BootDisks Topic. You don't need a boot disk for the FIPS stuff. Just boot to DOS. Get FIPS on that machine by whatever means you have available - plonking it on a CD (all on its own... aah...) would be fine. I wouldn't recommend attempting to add FIPS to a Linux CD. You'd need to extract all the Linux files from the ISO, add in FIPS and burn your own bespoke COMPILATION. Not worth the hassle. Good luck downloading FIPS. I can't get a response from the FTP server. You might need to google for a mirror. Quote You don't need a boot disk for the FIPS stuff. Just boot to DOS. Get FIPS on that machine by whatever means you have available - plonking it on a CD (all on its own... aah...) would be fine.FIPS is on the Vector Linux install disk. I have the image on the disk now... its all well. I used "Sonic Record" One question: will the Linux installation allow me to install on the drive I want it to? (Allow me to select the drive I want it to install to...) Yes. |

Solve : have win 98 problem? |
Answer» i am missing the SYSTEM.INI file from my computer. I have tried booting with every OPTION available. I have a hp pavailion. I can't find the system recovery or application recovery discs for my computer. I down loaded a boot disc for 98 but it did not do anything. How did this whole file come up missing? That is critical for Windows function and it grows as more programs are loaded, system settings change, etc. so you can't borrow someone else's. I fear you are lookng at a reinstall. :-/First try this. |

Solve : Can I upgrade Win98 first edition to SE?? |
Answer» This COULD be the dumbest QUESTION you've ever answered, but I just really need to know if I can do anything with my obsolete WIN98 operating system (none of my programs are compatible, they need MINIMUM of WIN98 SE) - yet I don't want to spend any money right now . The other option is, bite the bullet and buy a new computer....I know, I know! But I THOUGHT I'd ask, just in case.... |

Solve : Hibernate option in Win 98?? |
Answer» Is it possible to have an Hibernate option in Win 98? I mean is there any patch or fix or update in which that can be done?It depends on the COMPUTER, which you did not specify, and power OPTIONS.Yes i do have Power options on my PC/Keyboard. But i've never seen Hibernate options anywhere other than XP.What make and model, and is this the keyboard that came with it? WHy do you WANT it to hibernate? Is it a laptop? This is my Office PC, so i guess it must be assembled. I need the Hibernate option for faster start-ups and shut-downs... my 98 takes way too long. It depends on the computer, which you did not specify, and power options. Go into control panel and double click the power management ICON. If a hibernate tab is displayed click it and set it up. If no hibernate tab is displayed, your computer does not suppoert the feature. No mine doesnt have. But what kinda feature does the Computer require to SHOW this, you mean a Driver? The BIOS in the computer must be capable of supporting Hibernation. Your BIOS apparently does not support it. You might search for some info on your particular motherboard to see whether it is supposed to support Hibernation. But, it's doubtful, since you don't see a Hibernation option in your power management panel.Oh, but i thought that Hiberation was a feature of only XP, dint know it was available on 98 and all.Nope, read this: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/usingwindows/work/articles/908aug/hibernation.asp Again, this is probably a hardware limitation with your computer.Oh awesome, i think i got more info than i needed. Thanks a lot for the support guys. |

Solve : Reinstall Windows 98? |
Answer» I used to have Windows 98 on this OLD laptop that only has 16 RAM and 192 MHZ processor, and the system was totally infested with spyware and viruses, and since the computer barely moves without all that crap it was VERY slow with all that crap there. So I installed Red Hat 7 on it but the internet didn't work. I couldn't reinstall Windows 98 because it has no floppy drive, and the Windows 98 disk isn't bootable. Now I remembered that Nero has an option to make a bootable disk, and I made that bootable disk with Windows 98 on it too. The disk boots into DOS and when I type "format C:" it says "Invalid drive, or format not supported." Another odd thing is that the drive thats autimatically selected is A:\> and when I type "dir" it gives a short list of files that are obviously only the bootable part on the CD. I also tried "format A:-Z:" and for A and B it said "Insert target diskette into drive A/B and press ENTER when ready..." Also, when I try to change to the D drive (cd D:) NOTHING happens, it just goes back to "DR-DOS A:\>_"Is this a copy of Win98 ? ? A real Win98 CD is bootable and would be able to do what you need... |

Solve : Windows 98 Crashes, freezes and is messed? |
Answer» Okay so I have this COMPUTER which I salvaged in my room, it has Windows 98, 3 Gigs of Memory, 64 MB of RAM and a crappy video card. Generally a bad computer in general, but all I really want it for is MSN and Word. So anyways, it was running okay, crashing occasionally and freezing if I ran too many programs etc... (btw, if ANYONE can reccommend a solution to the crashes and freezes that'd be great). So one day, I boot the old girl up and I get a error message saying: Msgrv32 followed by MSGRV32 caused a segment not present fault in module SETUPX.dll at 0002:00005701, this message is followed by a lot of computer code and script which I dont understand but will be more than happy to provide, if it helps you solve my problem. |

Solve : Need Windows 98 Boot CD? |
Answer» I have an older GATEWAY 2000 Solo laptop, model no. SOLO 2300. I have a "legitimate" copy of 98, but it doesn't contain a copy of "format" that I can locate. A legitimate copy of anything MS ever produced contains the format tool...stop dancing around the issue. Then please explain why, when I boot my laptop from the so called legitimate copy of windows 98 second edition, (which is now working properly) I still can not format my hard drive. I get " Bad command or file name" ? It makes no difference whether I type the format command from a:, c:, or D:, I still get the same response. And, by the way, patio, my dance card is full! Thanks for any "legitimate" help from anyone. What command are you typing ? ? I'm unclear how this is not working for you....at the DOS prompt, typing format c: /s this confuses me also, as I dont find it on any of my copies of win98, either the legitimate one or the copies that I have, and yes, I do have a copy that I PURCHASED...... but then I burnt a copy of format.exe from my W2k machine, and when I execute that one, it tells me this PROGRAM can not be run from DOS...... the biggest problem here is that I dont have a floppy on this laptop. Thanks for the response back......OK, I finally located format.com on the win98 disk, and now the drive on the laptop is formatting. For future reference, format.com is located in the WIN98 directory of the win 98 CD. Issue resolved, Thank you to all who responded. photowrench |

Solve : I just re-loaded Windows 98SE, System Prop-message? |
Answer» What's the motherboard in this thing? You can get the drivers you need at the below website.Membership is free. What's the motherboard in this thing? ASUS P3C-E Quote Posted by: street1 Posted on: Today at 7:35pm I have got them all but the video. It acts like its not taking them.OK, I'm feeling pretty stupid right now. I broke the cardinal rule of "giving all the information" by not. But I am ready to take it on the chin and move on. I'm a novice, what can I say. I discovered late last night that this COMPUTER has two hard drives in it. I was doing the low level format on the Seagate drive. When info it gave during the process, disclosed this. The primary hard drive is up in the top of the chassis, I had not even seen it. It was up by the two cd rom drives. I was just seeing the lower one which was the Seagate Barracuda. I was just not looking for two hard drives when I was seeing the one at the bottom of the stack clearly. Now I know why I was seeing a different capacity of drive space (higher) that was not MATCHING the Seagate's info. This has two cd-rom drives in it, a zip drive floppy, standard floppy and the two hard drives, and some device that has a speaker on it, mounted in the front of the chassis. Its packed. In my defense, it has big round plastic sheathed cables running everywhere in the case. No ribbon cables. You can't see crap. Anyway the primary master drive is a IBM DLTA-307030, 30.7 GBytes. The primary slave drive Seagate Barracuda ST-320430A, 20.4 GBytes. These are FED I'm assuming by the PCI controller I see mounted in a PCI slot on the motherboard. Its marked, PCI Local Bus, Ultra 100, Promise Technology, which by the way I do have the driver for. What is the point of two hard drives and can I just remove one to make life easier? I have no idea which of these I loaded 98SE to. Which of the two hard drives should I keep and make the primary master drive? Then I can start from scratch again. Thanks,Unplug the Seagate and set the jumpers on the IBM to standalone...you will have to unplug the IBM also to do this... Re-boot with the (98 CD in the drive and the setup procedure should run... After installing 98 you can then plug in the Seagate ( jumpered as slave ) After changing the IBM jumper to Master with slave present and you should be good to go... patio. 8-) p.s. i would also unplug the ZIP drive until you have completed succesfully installing Win98 and then plug it in power up and install it's drivers. The native Zip drivers in Win98 were quirky. p.s.s The correct cabling for hard drives is the master goes at the end of the cable and the slave takes the middle connector, not the other way around. FTM you are 1/2 way there...keep up the good work !If you had run Everest it would have shown both drives. Quote p.s.s The correct cabling for hard drives is the master goes at the end of the cable and the slave takes the middle connector, not the other way around. This is how its wired. Quote If you had run Everest it would have shown both drives. Before or after trying to re-install? I have it on there now and Belarc Advisor and they show neither one, it only mentions the drive SYSTEM as being FAT 32 and it must be from the IBM because it matches its capacity. They identify nothing brand and model wise. I do remember seeing the Seagate in Everest and Belarc before the reinstall though, (I had the Belac Advisor and Everest on beofre trying to re-install) Not sure about the IBM. I was trying to make heads or tails of it all. Could I still just loose one and and only use one harddrive? Thanks,Yes.Is either hard drive better than the other? I realize the IBM has more capacity. But the computer is a 800mhz P3. 256mb of PC800 memory upgradeable to 2gb I believe. But she could buy a new computer for what that memory COSTS. And hey, I really appreciate the help I'm getting here, and sticking with me. I'm trying!!!I just physically pulled the IBM hard drive. The bottom cover is missing on the case. I can see a circut board and chips. Is this bad? Not at all...sometimes quite common in some hard drives. Just make sure you handle the drive by its sides when possible...and by all means...make sure you're grounded by touching the exposed metal on the computer case.Just checking back in. I used the IBM hard drive since it was bigger. Fdisked, formatted, loaded 98SE. Got the drivers back in for the video, sound, USB hub, ATA controller PCI cards. This was quite educational I will say. But that is good. I still don't understand the point of using two hard drives though. Most people use a second HDD for a few reasons... Storage Backups A home for large files or directories, such as pics videos and music. Extra space. patio. 8-) p.s. Way to stick with it ! ! |

Solve : computer tries to boot with windows 98 but I have? |
Answer» This is very strange, I have xp pro on a homemade computer. My son plays video games on it nonstop, but thats another story Yesterday it SUDDENLY started tring to boot on windows 98. Now at one TIME I did have 98 on this hard drive but that was years ago and it has been formated many times SINCE. The processor, memory and mother board have always ran on xp. Computer Name CHICKENSLAYER LOL i just had to comment on the name. my comps name is BOB. 2 HDs and booting to the wrong one. Tell your bios to boot to c drive & save the changes. If the changes won't stick after a re-boot then you need a new battery. CHICKENSLAYER? You must have something 98 related on the other HD. |
