Solve : System won't Boot, using windows 98?

Answer»

My IBM 600e LAPTOP won't BOOT up. On starting, a small picture of a paddlock appears. When I hit enter I get an error 173 and error 163 and the computer won't do anything. When I see the paddlock picture, it allows me to type in a password or something up to 23 characters. It allows me to do this 3 times and then it locks me out. Any ideas what may be causing this? I just replaced my battery yesterday and the NEXT time I turned on the computer, I had these problems. Any help will be APPRECIATED. Thanks. If that comes up before the bios screen, you may be SOL. Those machines stored the start up password in a seperate ROM chip. Even a reformat will not change it. Your only options are to have IBM fix it or search on some of the geek boards to see if someone has a figured out how to override it.2k,

Thanks for your help. How do I contact the geek boards?Give the below site a LOOK. :-?

Solve : Unknown device in Windows 95?

Answer»

I've got a problem in Windows 95. There is an unknown device that it keeps detecting, and this device is using resources and conflicting with the Sound Blaster Legacy driver. I'm able to disable and remove it, but when I do, Windows 95 always detects it at startup and wants to look for drivers for it. I always click cancel to keep it from appearing in the device manager. Also, the computer STILL HANGS when I exit out of MS-DOS programs if they're full-screen. For a while after my uncle re-installed Windows 95, it wouldn't do that as often, but now it does it all the time like it did before. When the computer hangs, I can't even hit ctrl+alt+delete. Should I try ctrl+esc? The keyboard's numlock light stops responding, and capslock and scroll lock won't do anything. This doesn't happen if I simply go into an MS-DOS window.

The only thing that I can say about this unknown device is that it is a remnant of the Yamaha OPL3-SA card. There has got to be a way to GET rid of everything related to that Yamaha card without having to format the computer and start over. (I won't do that without backing up FILES I need, especially those needed for the CD-ROM as well as HIMEM.SYS.) The Yamaha card was removed... I cannot find any files related to it on the computer. The only thing I can think of is a file called "autoexec.sa", but I doubt that's it.By chance is this a Packard Bell?

And by chance does the reinstall of Windows involve using their very own reinstallation CD as opposed to a real Windows one?

Details are important. Please post some. Instead of disabling AND removing it. Just disable it. Then Windows will just ignore it. I use Windows 95 so I do I have a bit of expierience.

EDIT: The unknown device I mean. Then restart your computer and see if that works.

Solve : Bizarre full-screen DOS problem in Windows 95?

Answer»

I've got a PROBLEM in Windows 95. I have noticed if I set the color to 24bit (True Color), and go into a full-screen DOS session while running Windows, Windows hangs when I exit from the DOS session. (This always happens on True Color). I'm finding it bizarre that it always happens on that color mode, and less often on the lower color settings.) I've TESTED that out on 256 colors (10 times in a row I entered and exited a full-screen command PROMPT), and there was no hang. I would expect it may sometimes happen on 256 colors, but not often. I also have the belief it will never happen if it's set on 16 colors. (I'd rather not USE that.) (Note: This computer has not been connected to the internet in years, so there are no spyware, viruses, trojans, or worms.) Bootup of Windows 95 is quite fast. Does anybody know of any way to completely eliminate this problem? I'm going to keep it on 256 colors unless a game of mine needs a higher color setting than that.Try other drivers.Games should automatically set their own colour depth regardless of Windows. Can you not access 32-bit colour? And why would you rather not use 16-bit colour over inferior 256 colours? (Which is 8-bit colour actually) Quote

Not always. I had one game in Win 95 that would mostly run in whatever mode I was using, but when I tried running one part of it, the game would ask me to switch to 256 color mode.

JoeIf you have a genuine Win98 CD i can walk you thru a repair install that will save all your data...let us know. Are you sure you didn't leave a diskette in the diskette station?nopeDo you have a geniune, do you have A WINDOWS disk?yup I have the windows 98 diskDo you wish to format, (you'll lose all your current data) or try to keep your present data?

Put in your bootup disk and get to the prompt, choosing CD-ROM SUPPORT. Then put in your Windows disk. Type d: (or whatever your cd-drive letter is. sometimes it gets changed in DOS, just try them). Then type setup.exe

Well, good luck.did it bud. It says not reading drive e, which I guess is my cdrom which I figured all along. Dang thing is busted unless I buy a new cdrom which I hear I can get from pricewatch for like 10 bucks.

Well Sure....Try other letters. The bootup disk creates a virtual drive with tools on it which can shift your other drive letters around a bit.

Solve : Win 98 won't boot up; SHLWAPI.DLL not found?

Answer»

It's been said here many times but here goes...

To recover the data you need hook that HDD up as a slave on a known working MACHINE and copy/burn what you need to save...

Without a legit MS CD we can't unfortunately get you back to where you want to be.

patio. 8-)I finally got the missing file copied to C: but now it says :-? I'm missing NTLDR!! Is there a floppy disk in the drive?Yes, floppy in drive.NTLDR should not be required for 9x. Have you attempted to mix files from DIFFERENT versions of windows? No, just transferred files from a: to C: from floppy boot disk.Is this a 9x boot disk? What files did you copy? Where did they come from? Shlwapi.dll would not be PRESENT on a 9x boot disk. The floppy boot disk said "boot for HP" so I assumed it was the correct one but not sure where it originated from ....was just within my archives of floppys. The SHLWAPI.DLL file was downloaded then unzipped and put onto a blank floppy and copied to c: Apparently, the boot disk was not for this system. Go to bootdisk.com and DOWNLOAD a 9x bootdisk with cdrom support. When you boot from it, it should give you access to the cdrom so that you can run your setup or recovery program. Looking back at page one, your computer appears to have been manufactured by Gateway. Quote

Yes, floppy in drive.

Take the floppy out of the drive and reboot. What happens? This is the error message when a non-bootable floppy is in the drive when the machine starts.I got rid of the NTLDR error and finally got Windows LOGO to appear when I rebooted, but now it says I have performed an illegal operation and will close (Explorer caused an invalid page fault in modul Explorer.exe at 0167:00401f31). Solve : install windows 98?

Answer»

I don't suppose ANYONE can tell me how ti INSTALL dell version of win98 on a gateway that I deleted win me off of? What would the 'dell' version be like and why is it any different from a normal Windows 98 INSTALLATION?

Normally, the steps are very simple:

  • Prepare a bootdisk
  • Insert Windows 98CD
  • Insert bootdisk
  • Restart PC
  • (Optional) Set FDD as first boot device
  • Choose to start with CD-ROM support
  • Type format C:
  • Type D:\ (Or whatever letter is assigned to your CD-ROM drive)
  • Type setup
  • Voila
when I put the dell version in and reboot, it TELLS me it is for a dell computer only.Did you get a legal serial code with the Dell CD?If so, you can download a Windows 98SE image from the INTERNET, burn it to a disc and then use the serial. Assuming the serial is also usable on non-dell copies..

Solve : Windows 98SE Freezeup?

Answer»

After using 98SE for 7yrs on my PC with no problems,
I finally loaded Media Player 9 to play music.
When I booted this am my screen locked in the windows logo screen.
Obviously MP9 has caused this, but now I can't load windows to uninstall it.
Any help please?
ThanksMedia player 9 does not come with an uninstall option.Do you have your
install disk for windows 98?Can you boot to safe mode and remove it?In the component section (on the left) of the Add/Remove PROGRAMS applet in the Control Panel, you can indeed remove the windows media player.

Good luck. 8-)Well,do you know how to boot into safemode? Thank you all.
Safe Mode removal did the job.
Is there any fix for this problem?
Microsft states MP9 is recommended for 98SE.??K-Lite Codec Pack 2.80 Full. It's free and better than Media Player.

Are you saying that the mere saying by Microsoft that MP9 is recommended for 98SE is a problem? Why is that a problem? Just because they say that doesn't mean you have to get it, and that you can't continue using an older version, does it?
Soybean, sorry but your post makes no sense to me.
I did'nt say that them recommending MP9 was a problem.
I said I had a problem with the program.
I,m aware that there are other players out there.
I know I can use any one of them I choose.
My question pertained to a fix for the freezing problem. (I Had).
Maybe I'm the only one who had this problem, and there is no fix.
Maybe I INSTALLED the program incorrectly, or something is conflicting here.
Thanks for replying though.I think what soybean was saying is that considering Win98 is 10 years old and that MP9 is about 3 or 4 years old is that the developers didn't exactly spend a great deal of time making it backwards compatible...Thank you Patio.
Your comment I understand.
Reading between the lines, Soybean's is also understandable.
Us old guys that have a Windows OS, and are used to it, and just hate change,
and perhaps somewhat intimidated by new upgrades (XP) tend to hang onto things that work.
I have quite a few toys that only work with 98SE (camera, SCANNER, printers etc.) and XP does
not support these old BABIES. (I have checked)
With all that said, I do have an old (3 YRS) homebuilt XP Pro system in a Compaq SFF with new motherboard and
3.2 CPU (barebones otherwise) that will play my music (also old) and Perry Como sounds pretty good
using MP10.
Oh-----MP7.1 running OK on my 98 system

P.S. My old 1966 Ford fastback still runs real well, hope I never have to replace the 5 speed lol.

Thanks for the help, ALL.Below you will find the Unofficial Service Pack for Win98SE...

These guys put a lot of work into it...

Solve : Re-Install WIN 95 Need help Pleasei?

Answer» HI everyone! This is my first question to you all and I hope you can help me out . A week ago I received from my sister a used Dell machine that she used to own. Before she gave it to me she scrubbed the hard drive of everything on it. This wiped out Win 95 in addition to everything else. She gave me the boot disk and CD-Rom for re-INSTALLATION of 95. The computer is a Pentium 2 machine from Dell. I started the installation and everything went smoothly until scan disk swept the system and found "errors on my hard drive", correct errors then resume installing. Some errors were corrected by Scandisk , but others were not corrected and the installation came to a standstill. I was almost at the set-up wizard until I was stopped by this problem. I have no IDEA how I can check and correct these errors. I am not terribly computer literate and I am at a loss. Can anyone give me suggestions how to cure this problem and move on with the installation?? Any help would most gratefully be appreciated. Thanks in advance...John

I am not to sure as to what Windows 95 has to offer but, maybe the hard disk surface has errors. Have you run scan disk surface? Or maybe a bad hard disk that needs replacing.Run the free diagnostics that can be downloaded from the appropriate hard drive maker's site. This will run without Windows having to be loaded. What is the make and model number of the drive? The service tag of the Dell? (This is found in the BIOS screen - F2 when you see the Dell logo, or whatever it says on the screen. It will be 4-6 letters and numbers.

If the disk is bad, there is no point in continuing this exercise until it is replaced.Yes, I ran Scandisk when the setup was taking place (it seems it is the last operation before setup wizard begins). It showed errors on the hard drive, but fixed the majority of them. After it completed it said there are still errors on my hard drive. This is what I was wondering how can a person FIX the remaining errors and proceed with the setup wizard?? The hard drive is good as far as my knowledge, it was just totally scrubbed by my sister before she gave it to me.....John

Thanks for your advice GX_1 ,

I will be getting all this info from the computer tonight. I will forward it onto you and hopefully we can go on from there....John

As I posted in my earlier screen to fffreak as far as I know the hard drive is fine, it was just completely scrubbed clean by my sis before she gave me the computer.

That machine was originally shipped 6/9/98 and that IBM was, strangely enough, the one that shipped with it. The fact that you had bad sectors while scandisking it and it's age indicate to me it is not trustworthy, regardless of it working in some fashion before you got it.

If you want to try a format on the drive, it can identify bad sectors and not use them, BUT it will not change the fact that the drive has problems.

With the boot disk in there and the machine started so that you see A:> type in

format c:/u/s and press enter

Then when you try to install Windows it may load on there, BUT that drive should not be trusted with any important data. Once they start having problems it tends to snowball. Even the best warranty on a new hard drive is only 5 years.

Let us know. Thanks for your quick reply. When I type what you told me I receive the following message after a warning that all info on Drive C will be removed and after I press Yes to proceed: Invalid device parameters from device driver. What should I do now?

I understand your ASSESSMENT of the hard drive, my sister said it was working fine before she scrubbed the hard drive, maybe it is shot, I hope not!!....John

A new hard drive would work, but I would suggest an 80 gig or smaller one to use. Sometimes computer shops have old 10-20 gig drives they sell for cheap, or give away. A friend might have an old drive. Be creative!

It just needs to be an IDE/ATA drive. NOT a SATA drive.

Solve : microsoft -windows 98?

why does my cursor float?? Well with this amazing amount of information it is really difficult to say.

See below.inghere is more information as requested. as i am typing like this, my cursor goes someplace else. (like on the first line above). how do i stop it .?Just for the fun of it, I'm going to post GX1_MAN's signature block comments. I get the impression you did not read it.

"Please post as much information about your computer, operating system, and problem as possible, what happened PRIOR to problems, etc. Too much info is OK, too little is pointless! Don't just say "My computer doesn't work. What's wrong?" We shouldn't have to drag the DETAILS out of you. It is YOUR problem, not ours."

And, some specific questions to the ball rolling: Is your computer a desktop or laptop? What mouse are you using? Did it previously work OK? If you have a laptop, are you using the touchpad or an external mouse? check your mouse for dust. what kind of mouse are you using? At my school some of there computers use these really crappy laser mouses from dell and they tend to jump around.im starting to understand what u need....its a dell laptop, windows 98, it started to happen about 2-3 months ago. it is not really a floating cursor as it is a cursor that jumps back someplace. if i dont keep my eye on the screen, i really screw up. thanx, it does not always happen, as it did not happen in this answer. How old is this mouse ? ?
All hardware fails eventually...

Have you tried re-installing the drivers ? ?the laptop is 2yrs old, does not have a separate mouse. i have tried to clean it, but do not know if it helps...i have no idea how to re-install drivers...We still have precious little information. Please post the service tag (on the machine, or on the BIOS/Setup screen reached when you press F2 when you see the Dell LOGO.

We cannot proceed without this. It's been over 24 hours. We didn't even know it was a laptop until today. You perhaps could have had it fixed by now.

Dr. Patio are you ready to begin?i cannot find the serfvice tag #.. checked all the mouse settings with the control panel.
thank you very much for your assistance. i will just grin and bare in for the present time.. i just may have to get a geek in here to find the problem...thanx again..this is a very good site....RIGHT click on the desktop. Solve : Windows 98 CD-ROM problem?

Answer»

I'm reasonably familiar with how things work (front-line tech support and network administration off and on for the LAST 11 years), but this one has me stumped.

I'm working with an oldish PC, a Dell OptiPlex GXa, BIOS firmware A10, Pentium II 266 (Klamath), MAXED out at 384 MB RAM installed (I'm not trying to accomplish anything special, I just happened to have the chips lying around and it was easier to install them than keep up with them loose). Two hard drives and one CD-ROM installed as follows: IDE primary master: Maxtor 84320D4 (4 GB), IDE secondary master: Maxtor 91024D4 (10 GB), IDE secondary slave: Samsung SC-140B CD-ROM. The little hard drive has DOS/Windows 3.1 and Windows 98 SE (from a Dell Restore CD) on mutually-invisible primary partitions, as well as an extended partition with logical drives for DOS/Win31 apps and data. The BIG hard drive (which is also faster) holds a partition for swap files for the two Windows versions and an extended partition with logical drives for 98 apps and data. This was just the arrangement that worked best for what I needed.

Anyway, the CD-ROM works perfectly in DOS/Win31 and well enough to run a variety of Linux boot CDs, albeit with "IDE=NODMA" turned on. I don't know Linux well enough to know if that alone might be a symptom of something. In Win98, though, any CD-ROM put in the drive will result in Explorer not responding and both the CD-ROM and HD lights coming on and staying lit steadily. I can eject the disk to a blue screen and cancel out of that with little apparent ill effect, but I really would like to be able to access this CD-ROM drive in 98. I'm really getting tired of booting to DOS/Win31 to copy files off CDs, then booting back to 98 to USE them.

Oh, and I've already replaced the CD-ROM drive once with an identical unit from a different machine to no effect. The previous one showed exactly all of these symptoms.

Last salient points, possibly suggesting a bigger problem with the IDE system: Maxtor's PowerMax diagnostics report that both hard drives are failing in the short test but certifies both error free in the long test. Dell Diagnostics tells me that SMART is disabled or not available on the little hard drive, which doesn't jibe with what Belarc Advisor and SiSoft Sandra both tell me when I look at their info. And last but not least, in the BIOS setup screen, the big hard drive shows up as "EIDE Hard Drive" but the little one (configured and connected identically) shows CHS numbers instead.

Could a failing hard drive bleed over onto a CD-ROM like this?

And I'm sorry, I know I'm presenting this as a hardware problem, but because the symptom is specific to Windows98, I'm really hoping there's an explanation that makes it a software issue.A lot of those older Dells preferred or demanded using cable select, rather than Master-Slave settings for all drives.

If not done lately, a new CMOS battery might be a cheap thing to try.

Then you might make sure that IDE 2 is set to Auto and None rather than Auto and Auto in the BIOS.All very good info, thanks, GX1_Man.

Alas, the CMOS battery got replaced the first time I OPENED the case (it's a habit when I'm refurbishing old boat anchors like this). I originally had everything set to cable select and then re-jumpered it all to the current master/slave settings, I just forgot to mention that part. Aside from not recognizing the IDE primary master drive as EIDE like (I think) it should, the BIOS is showing NONE for IDE primary slave (correct). IDE secondary shows EIDE on master and CD-ROM on slave, as it should.

I guess one thing I could try that I haven't yet is setting the CD-ROM up as slave on the IDE primary channel instead of the secondary. I was trying to keep it off the channel the operating systems were on, but maybe I should try it and see what happens.

Solve : Why in the world wont win98 install??

Answer»

Guys I have a pc with 98 on it and another pc that has XP on it, but the MB is going bad. I am going to change the XP over to 98 and install it into the 98 pc. Here is the situation step by step. I put my win98 cd into the xp pc and it boots up and has these three options.1-restore win98 format HD 2-restore win98 will not format HD 3-Boot to DOS. I choose 3 and use fdisk to change from NTSF to FAT32. I go through all the steps and reboot and reformat HD. I go back to fdisk and go and display partion information, and it does say FAT32. So it has changed from NTSF to FAT32. I reboot the pc and put back in my win98 restore disk and once again have 1-restore win98 format HD 2-restore win98 will not format HD 3-Boot to DOS as options. I choose either 1 or 2 and it comes up with "verifying system info..pc not responding...Incorrect System TYPE restore cancelled" I cant understand why, the file partion is saying FAT32. Could it just be saying FAT32, but its still NTSF?I suspect the problem lies with your using a Windows 98 CD to reformat the hard drive. Windows 98 was prior to the NTFS used by Windows XP. You can use the Windows XP CD to reformat the hard drive or use a Windows Me boot floppy disk. You can download one here:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htmThanks for the info, I will try the XP cd because my floppy drive is bad.Tried the XP cd and used the fdisk/format off of it, but still win98 wont install. Any suggestions?Does fdisk show the partion active? Did you format after running fdisk?Follow 2KD's advice and let us know if you run into any snags. Also, when you format, choose FAT (not NTFS) as the file system.Yeah, I did all of the above, partion is active and showing Fat32. Someone suggested I use something called delpart and remove the NTSF. I used delpart, and COMPLETELY removed the ntsf partion. Went again through all the stages again and checked partion information, and it is set as primary and active and says Fat32, but still win98 will not LOAD. I pretty much give up so what will happen if I do this.
Have win98 as my primary HD, and use XP and my slave drive. I know if I boot into win98 I will not see the xp drive, but if I boot into xp and choose to use xp it will show the win98 drive wont it? In other words if I am in the xp OS will I be able to drag files from my 98 drive on to the xp drive. I know I cant do this if I am in the 98 OS, but can I do it if I am in the xp OS. Also, when I boot the pc it will give me the OPTION for which OS I want to use at that time want it. I thought I read as long as win98 is the primary drive it will, but I could be wrong. Quote

It should allow you to. Just check your "Startup and Recovery" options to be sure. Right click my computer and go to properties, then click advanced tab, finally click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Hope that helps. Quote

In order to have the option of booting to Windows 98 or XP, you should boot to Windows 98 and install Windows XP. Since you are unable to boot to Windows 98, try installing Windows XP to the hard drive that does not have Windows 98, then see if you are able to ACCESS your files on the drive that has Windows 98 on it.

Solve : 98 Vs XP?

Answer»

Quote

Now you are with me, Calum.
I am indeed.
Lavender - you're saying you don't have a 98 CD or an XP CD?No i dont have it :-/ I never had

That will make the problem difficult to solve. And by difficult, I mean virtually impossible.

So let's summerise. You have a working XP, and a non-working 98 on the same partition? (Ie both INSTALLED on C: drive) And you want to install Linux on another partition?Everyone needs a real Windows CD SOONER or later. I BELIEVE in your case it is sooner.actually it goes like this, I have a working XP, not working 98 on the same partition and what I want is to uninstall 98In that case I WOULD be tempted to just delete the 98 Windows folder (in safe-mode or even DOS if necessary) and leave it like that, MAKING modifications to your boot setup file if required. Double check you know which folder is for which. I've never seen a dual boot on the same partition before and I am actually quite curious as to what goes where. I'd wait to hear the others' view on this first though.

The bottom line is, an operation like this is always risky, and if you carry it out, you must accept the possibility you will may to buy a new legal XP disk if problems occur.

Solve : split HDD in two = XP | 98'?

I have a 300Gb SATA Seagate HDD in my custom built computer. Unfortunately a few games that I have that are extremely awesome wont run on Windows XP (I have XP Home SP 2). I was wondering If I could isntall XP as well as 98' on the same HDD. I read somewhere that this is possible but I COULDNT FIGURE out where I had read it.

Can someone tell me how to do it and what exactly I would need to do? Ideally I would like to have a selection at boot up that I could choose was OS I want to boot up with. Is there a way I can do that? You can partition your HDD into 2 with your XP disk.
Be prepared to lose everything so backup your stuff. If ya wanna dual boot then its best to install 98 FIRST, then xp, so that you get the boot loaderAre these DOS games? A DOS emulator is freely available, and many old games can be got to WORK with the right tweaks.nah there not DOS games.

And I dont wanna lose everything lol, i need to go out and find an external 150gb at least to back up my HDD in that case... :sigh:"Are these DOS games?" was actually an invitation to tell us what these games are. Unless you really want to dual-boot between XP and 98, which can be useful, I was pointing out that there might be alternative ways to get these games working.lol sorry, multi tasking out the wazoo, didnt pick up on it. The game is one in particular called Machines. Another that doesnt seem to like my XP very much is Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. I actually EMAILED the makers of Machines(Acclaim Entertainment) and asked if they were ever going to make it compatible with XP. I tried running the games in Compatibility mode with 98' but not luck.

Solve : upgrade Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE?

Answer»

:-?I'm a rather aged, novice Brit using an old NEC Powermate pc with 32MB RAM and WINDOWS 98. I have been SEDUCED into signing up for broadband on the assurance that I only need Windows 98SE (but NOT FIRST edition). After a lengthy search I have managed to buy Windows 98SE only to find it will not load as it is only for new pcs and it tells me I need the Windows 98SE Upgrade. This does not SEEM to exist!! Before you tell me to throw away the old computer and join the 21st Century, let me add I also have an old wife, old car and old cat and I'm not throwing them away either!! Any suggestions most gratefully received.Windows 98SE is just Windows 98 with all the updates etc.
At least, that's what I've been told, please someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Be aware that if you are on the internet with Windows 98 you will be vulnerable, as Microsoft will not be releasing any more security patches for it.
What happens when you try to load 98SE?
You say it tells you that you need the upgrade, but what actually happens? There was a 98 to 98SE upgrade disk sold briefly by Microsoft which may still be available on eBay.

What you have will work fine, but it will require a format and reinstall, which is not a bad THING. You will just have to backup any necessary data files first.

That's what I would do.

98 to 98SE was more than a few minor fixes, and is certainly preferable for a lot of reasons. If it will not install, you have an OEM version instead of a full retail version. There is a way around the problem but unless you are PC savvy I would not suggest it.

Solve : strt up disk for windows 98se?

a friend has a computer that should have windows 98se on it all we did was change monitors and now the computer does not come up with windows 98se where can i get a start up disk to DOWNLOAD to a floppy disk to take to his computer to restart the computer to format the drive to install windows 98se again i am using a public computer so the download can not be SAVED on the computer it has to go staright to being saved on a floppy disk can anyone help if you sned me to bootdisk.com what do i click on for windows 98se it does not seem to work when i save it to a floppy at bootdisk.com :-?Save it as a file to your hard drive. Then double click on that file with a blank floppy in the drive and it will create the boot disk. If it was Windows 98SE, use the boot disk for that. Win98SE OEM is the exact listing there.

If you just changed the monitor and that was all, then I doubt that a format will solve the problem. There may be hardware ISSUES, display settings, etc. that need to be ADDRESSED. Alas, we have no clue as to the hardware.

Solve : Cannot do a quick restore and reload Win 98?

Answer»

I have an old Compaq Presario 5220 that had a locked display property of large icons and limited colors.
After trying different things in safe mode I decided to do a clean install from the disc, but first formatted and then created the first partition. The extended partition was not allowed.

Formatting must have removed the cd driver because Windows 98 wouldn't reload on a cold boot. I tried the emergency floppy and still no go. All unoriginal hardware has been DISCONNECTED (burner and a parallel PORT) as PER the first time I had the problem but was able to get a full restore via the cd.

Any suggestions? If you have the original restore disk........

Turn COMPUTER on USE F1 to go to BIOS setup.
Change boot order for CD-ROM first.

After that boot with restore disk in CD-ROM. :-?Or travel to bootdisk.com and grab a bootdisk and create a floppy....boot with the floppy and run setup again from the CD.

The one you want is WinSE with CDRom support.

The other issue sounds like the video drivers were not installed and or corrupt...

Solve : Trying to re-install W98SE on Compaq?

Answer»

I am trying to re-install W98SE on an old Compaq Pessario 2240.
This does not succeed, apparently because the Compaq hardware requires something special.
HP is willing to deliver a copy of the recovery discs for only Euro 38.50 but I WOULD like to save money for my (ELDERLY) client. (My services are for free).
The symptoms are a crash at the end of the INSTALLATION (blank screen: _ cursor blinking at top left); start-up (normal) does the same; start-up (safe mode) works but does not show any missing drivers or other errors. Anyway, I am not very familiair with safe mode.

Can anybody help, please ?

Thanks

This could be a hardware fault. What precipitated the reinstallation?

General slowness, suspected malware.
I ran Compaq diagnostics for some time and it did not come up with any errors ... but I have thought the same thing and now that you come up with that as WELL, I will run the diagnostics again over night; see what comes out tomorrow morningYou may have to reformat the DRIVE. Sometimes just a reinstall doesn't work and a reformat (and possibly repartition) is the only thing that will make it work.

Could also be hardware issues with the hard drive.

I actually started with fdisk and format ... in retrospect I may have killed the special Compaq partition that way and I have no iade how to recreate it, but I suspect that the BIOS links to it in some way.The system ran diagnostics all night and did not report any problems.

In the mean time I tried loading safe mode in step-by-step: the first part went ok; then it started loading the device drivers of windows:
- javasup ok
- vrtwd.386 ok
- vfixd.vxd ok
- msmouse.vxd CRASH

So, now we know where the problem might be, but what is the solution ??The problem is solved.
I ran fdisk /mbr and used a copy of the official recovery disc that someone mailed me.
Thank you for your help.

Solve : Odd problem shutting down 98SE?

Answer»

I have an old HP Pavilion 4563Z with 98SE.

I have re-installed the operating system. I did not have the HP disks. I used a Microsoft 98SE disk. I re-installed the proper drivers. I also have loaded the Microsoft updates including the ones relating to shutdown issues. The computer works fine except SOMETIMES at shutdown.

When I shutdown sometimes it seems to loop back on as if you clicked the re-start button. This is not every time, but most times.

Then I have found if I actually do click to restart after this has happened and let it re-boot, when I hit Shut Off , it will shut off properly every time. I have re-loaded 3 times. I even used a different but know to good hard drive with the same results.

Is this something in the BIOS or some other SETTING that I am not aware of.

BTW I have 0 wrote the hard drive, f disked and deleted from there, tried different methods to make sure the hard drive was absolutely clean prior.

Thanks,ANYONE!Where've you been ? ?Just been kind of busy since the holidays.

I try to get here at least once a week to read though.

This old HP is giving me a little aggravation though. Not serious, but ANNOYING. Its just for my granddaughter to play games on and get online if wanted.

Its like it goes to re-start, instead of shutting off when thats what I select.

I may have came up with a couple things to try in the BIOS.Good luck to you.
If you get stuck and it doesn't work and are comfortable with DOS editing you can use a bootdisk.
Rename win.com to win.old and then re-boot with the Win98 CD in.
You can now re-install Win98 and it should leave all your programs and files intact.

patio. 8-)I think I got it by changing the Device ENUMERATION under the Settings tab from Hardware to BIOS.

It has shut off properly a half dozen times at least since doing that. I believe it would have acted up in that time frame.

Solve : Windows 95 installation?

Answer»

Trying to load Windows 95 in a new in the box Compaq LTE 5400.(oldie from an estate sale.))
Run into the Disk-Cache Utility error.
Followed the fix instructions found on here.
I went through the partition's delete three TIMES, formats etc.
Clicked "NO" for the large disk option
Keeps putting the utility back in.

I do not have a 95 startup disk so used a 98 version of startup.
Could this be the REASON this is happening.?

Any advice please.

Thanks
Further to the above message I used the FDISK command to delete all the partitions
on the PC, found a Windows 95 Startup disk file, made a disk, used it to reboot, was able to get started loading the first 2 disks, then run into an "SU-0013 error."

(I am trying to load from the 14 disk floppy drive Windows 95 package.)
I do not have a CD-Rom drive, and am still looking for one.

Here is what "Display Partition Information" shows.
C:1 A PRI DOS 1286 Mbytes UNKNOWN 100% USAGE

Can ANYONE steer me on what I need to do now.?
P.S. I did read the fix for the error but I am somewhat confused now.

ThanksAfter running FDisk did you run format ? ?

format C: /u is the command.Yes I did do a format but not with the "u".
Further to last message I am in worse trouble now.
I tried going through the same procedure another time
just to make sure I did it right.
I did something wrong because FDISK will not allow me to use
the Delete and Create Partition options, now.
Tells me there are 2 drives and no partitions.
I believe it HAPPENED when I was trying to create a partition
and I hit the wrong number and enter.
Is there a procedure to completely wipe the drive, and start over
with the boot disk.

Thanks>GParted< can solve your problem. Thanks for the reply.
I found the program.
I am just not literate enough to understand how to use it.There's lots of help available on the GParted site. In short, you just click on the partitions that will be displayed by GParted and hit "delete". You may then repeat your installation from the start.

Solve : Can't install Windows 95B on a Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Virtual Machine?

Answer»

I recently bought a GENTLY used computer (HP D530C, Pentium 4 2.66 GHz processor, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive, built-in sound, 2 CD-ROM drives (1 is R/W), and 128 MB of dedicated video RAM). It's primarily so my HUSBAND can play some old games that won't run on anything higher than Windows 95 B/OSR2. [I posted a question about what kind of computer, OS, etc. about this but can't remember which forum.]

I've installed Windows XP Pro w/SP2 and Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, with XP being the host OS and Windows 95B as the guest operating system inside a virtual machine. I've tried this three times and have gotten the same results every time: during the Win 95 install, I get many messages like: "Cannot find file vnetsup.vxd on Windows 95 CD" and asks me to find the file elsewhere. Elsewhere is the boot floppy or the C: drive, and I look exhaustively for the files and they're nowhere to be found. I also know for sure that the files aren't on the CD because I have another Windows 95B CD and I've put it into my laptop while I'm doing the install and searched for some of the files on that copy and they aren't there either.

I can only think of two other things that could cause this problem -- my husband's computer workstation includes his "regular" computer, our all-in-one printer, etc. and the PC in question sets on the floor. There's no room for another keyboard, touchpad, and monitor, so the two computers share these items with a KVM switch.

The other is that I was told to install DOS 6.22 (or as close as possible) on the virtual machine before I install Windows 95B. So far I haven't been able to find a working copy on the Internet.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Lifelong WI Badger fanHave you tried running the old games in DosBox?No, I haven't, but that's a great suggestion. I'll try it LATER today.

Thanks.

Solve : Dual booting windows 95 and windows 98?

Answer» OK, so I have read up on doing this, but it seems sort of difficult. Dont ask why I want to, I just do . Right now the computer has windows 98 already installed on it, and I just got my HANDS on a copy of windows 95. How would I go about getting windows 95 on the machine as well as STILL have 98 on it, and be able to dual boot? Do they both have to be primary partitions? From what I have read, you would have to set up 2 partitions, then install the older version first, then the newer version to the other partition. Meaning you would have to get rid of your current win98 before you even start.
It doesn't make sense.

Solve : Processor for Windows 95B/OSR2?

Answer»

I need to set up a computer that will accept Windows 95B/OSR2 as its operating system to play some old games that won't run on anything > Windows 95B/OSR2. What processor family will work -- Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4, .

Thanks in advance,

mckeownswHave a look here http://www.95isalive.com/win95B.htm

Let me know if your still having issues. It will run on any of the processors you listed there.Unfortunately, the Win95IsAlive site doesn't directly address the issue of compatible operating systems, but it has a lot of other useful info, so thanks for that. Unless SOMEONE else here GIVES me info to the contrary about Win95B and Pentium 4's, I know where I can get a pretty stripped down Pentium 4 without an OS, but adequate for my purposes with a warranty and return period.

Thanks for your help and if anyone else wants to chime in, please do.Patio did say it will work. What do you need to know?
I guess I really don't need anything else, just being cautious because a local used computer store said it wouldn't work on a P4. But maybe I should be leery of them -- they told me it work on an Athlon 1.1 Mhz and it didn't. Thanks for your help. I have WIN98SE running on a P4.
It works.Glad Patio helped.Patio,

Sorry to bother you again, but even if I get Windows95B to run on a P4, I looked for drivers from the manufacturers' websites (Dell, IBM (now Lenovo), and Compaq) of some of the MACHINES I'm considering. I couldn't even find their model numbers in the lists where you search for drivers in some cases. In other cases, they had drivers for the machine, but they didn't have anything listed specifically for Windows 95B; the closest were for Windows 98 or 98SE. Can I assume these will work on Windows 95B and it's just that they don't support Windows 95 any more so they just left it off the list?

Thanks,

SueHave you ever considered getting Virtual PC. You can set up windows 95 on a virtual machine and play those games that way. Interesting that you would mention that. I talked to a math/computer science prof. friend this afternoon and that was his suggestion. 2 for 2 knowledgeable people with the same answer and another response that Win95B would work on a on P4 are more than enough info for me. We'll have a used P4 in the house soon.

Thanks so much for your help. Hope I can help you out some time.

Solve : getting win98 display card to work?

Answer»

Hi
I know this is an old problem, but can SOMEONE help. I reformatted an old amd k6 pc with win98 on it. The problem is I can't change the display from 16colors to full color. The video card doesn't have a number on it, I believe it is an evaluation card ( I got the pc off an engineer who has SINCE moved away, so I can't ask him about it) I just like the WAY the machine worked, it's more of an hobby to get it working again. since microsoft doesn't support Win98 anymore, you can't use Windows update....But you might try looking for and updated video card driver from some computer freak's WEBSITE.....a driver that support more than 16 colors

download it, install it and restart

try this: http://www.driverskit.com/

look for a driver compatible with Win98In system properties, click on display adapters. It should show you which card you have. System information on start up will show it as well. Knowing the make without a number to go with it may not help unless it uses a driver from Microsoft.

You can still use the Win98 scan and update feature from Microsoft, you just have to search the Microsoft site to find it as Windows update no longer work's from your computers direct link. I used it last week & downloaded one small update. I don't think the date on it was new, but it hadn't shown up in scans before.Or DLoad and install AIDA32 from majorgeeks.com...AMD k6-2? any model number for the PC? built or manufactured?

Does the "add new hardware" wizard find anything?thanx guys, sorry i'm bit late anwering. I give them all a try.
I ran Belarc pc advisor and it said that the dispay was:Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) [Display adapter]. which doesn't seem to help. I will try blockheads advice and try to install a win 98 compatible driver to see if that works.
again thanx

Actually, there was. Originally, Windows 98 was to be Windows 97 (since its release was expected in 97 and not 98). While it was never publicly released, it did exist. A copy of an early version of Windows 97 was somehow leaked and floating around the pirate markets here in Asia. Originally codenamed Windows Nashville, it was also known as Windows 96 for a time (as it was originally to be released as an upgrade to 95 available in 1996).

-=EDIT=-
Managed to find an old news article on it.

wait a second- windows 98 was memphis...

Right, it was changed to Memphis when the release of 97 was scrapped, redeveloped, and finally released in 1998 as Windows 98. It would be my guess that the version on the pirated markets here was more or less 95 with the 97 beta upgrade. I've never found any clear explanation of exactly what the plan was or why 97 got scrapped. However, a lot of the planned features for 97, like Active Desktop, finally went into 98. There are a lot of stories out there about how all of this went down, hard to tell which are accurate though. After a bit more digging, seems I need to correct myself.

Nashville was to be Windows 96. This is the version that was canceled.

Memphis was to be Windows 97, but the release date was pushed into 1998, therefore the name was changed.

As to the version on the pirate markets, while labeled 97, it's unclear if those were modded 95 versions with the 96 upgrade or early versions of 98 when it was still called 97. As I don't have a copy of it, I can't look at it and see.

I did see a few days ago that Windows 7 RC is already on the pirate market though. That was fast. But that's how that stuff goes over here.whew, I was confused there.

a lot of MSDN articles from as early as late 96 were referring to "memphis".

I remember seeing some scattered references to "nashville" but never really considered what it was.Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 06, 2009, 02:06:40 AM

It's a joke:

Somebody ELSE wrote "Hey, we don't talk about your motherboard!" In Hispanic cultures people, especially teenagers, often trade insults about each other's mothers. A "placa madre" is a motherboard in Spanish. "Y tu mama también" is a teen expression common in Mexico which means "and your mama also". It is also the title of a well known Mexican film starring Gael Garcia Bernal. I combined the 2 phrases.

So its basically Ditto in Spanish?Quote from: macdad- on May 06, 2009, 06:13:22 AM
So its basically Ditto in Spanish?

It works like this: someone says "You suck!" or the equivalent, (either in fun or seriously), and you SAY "And so does your mother!"

There is a whole genre of "Yo mama" insults that Americans know about.
that was an old fad....but quite alive and well in some circles. its like saing that the 70 will come back.Quote from: Dias de verano on May 06, 2009, 10:06:54 AM

Ahh..I'll keep that in mind.

But anywho, the question for the original intent of this topic was answered earlier so we should lock it or again like Patio said "Let it die naturally" That we should.

Solve : How do you delete 98se without the installer disk??

Answer»

I want to PUT windows xp professional on here but I don't have the disk to remove 98se. I want to clean the computer of as much as i can so i have room for the new xp to go on. Any ideas as to how i would do it?Boot from the XP install disk.

The XP disk will format your hard drive. Just boot to the disk and enter setup. Press F8 to agree to the license agreement. Then follow this order:

1. Delete partitions
2. Create a new partition
3. Format your partition (to set up windows on the selected item press enter)

Before you do this, you will want to make sure that your computer meets the minimun system requirements. If you run XP with less than 512MB of RAM, your computer will be very slow.Ok, thanks guys! If its just that simple i'll put it in. I just wanted to make sure i didn't wind up with both 98 and xp on the computer! So what are the computer's specs? Ram, hard drive, processor etc...i don't know about all that but i do know it has 320 mb of ram so it is going to be slow. i also noticed today a few problems. one thing that has me concerned is that while i was installing it told me twice that my boot sector had changed and that i may have a virus. i also noticed in my task master that i have both Iass and Lass. Which one is the good one and which is the bad? And how do i get rid of the bad?If you wipe the partition and follow the installation steps any baddies you may have will be gone...
Select Delete partition in setup and then re-create it.Quote from: buckshotdad1960 on May 05, 2009, 07:07:57 AM

You're doing something wrong.

Did you boot to the CD? Do this:

When you first turn your computer on, before windows loads, you will see a message that says to press a certain KEY to enter setup. Pay attention, as the message may flash very quickly. It is usually an Fkey or esc or del. Tap this key as the computer starts up - before windows starts to load.

This will take you into BIOS. You use the arrow keys to navigate through BIOS.

In BIOS you want to look for Boot order or Boot sequence or maybe even just Boot. You want to set your CD drive as the first boot device. You usually use the plus and minus keys to move your devices around in the boot order.

Once you have your CD drive set as the first boot device, place the CD in the master CD drive. Now exit setup and SAVE changes (F10).

The computer will now reboot. You may see a message that says: "Press any key to boot to CD". Just keep tapping the space bar as the computer is starting back up (before windows loads). You will hear the Cd start spinning in the drive and see a blue sceen with the word "setup" at the top.

Solve : Win 98 History stopped working?

Answer»

My IE6 History recently stopped recording new pages visited.

Previous History is still OK going back 38 weeks, and it still makes folders for the current day; but no URLs are recorded there.

I presume the Histry cache-size must've been exceeded, and tried CHANGING registry settings to increase it.
I found three registry entries relating to History cache size, and increased all of them; but it had no effect.

I'm using Windows 98 Second Edition.

Have you tried changing some things in the Internet Option?Yes I have.
However there does not appear to be a way to change the History cache size; only the TEMPORARY internet files cache size (which is not relevant to my problem). Is there a paticular reason you want to keep history files that old? I think the default setting is 7 day's but I have mine set a 2. I would lower the day's stored, clean out the folder and see what happen's then. Try REMOVING those recent files and try to use the default setting 7 and see if that new ADDRESS will be stored on your history.I don't want to remove the files or clear the history.

I would like to preserve a full record of URL's for as LONG as possible, as I find it very useful at times. E.g. If a file on my hard-drive gets corrupted, I can use Internet History Explorer to find out where I originally downloaded it from, and replace it. Has saved my bacon several times!

Accordingly I have set my History to 999 days.

Solve : network prob with win xp and win 98?

Answer»

I recently set up a small home NETWORK with my win xp system and my old win 98. I run them simultaneously with a broadband router and so just used the xp wizard on both machines (IP address assigned automatically) to set up the network.
Now, I can access the xp computer and its shared files folder from my 98 machine but not the other way around. Most annoying, the main reason for the network was to transfer files from my old 98 to the new xp.
I'd certainly appreciate any help with this, I've been fiddling with it for days.Security of the XP System is the reason.... If you create a folder and then change the share permissions to everyone on your local network you may be able to call out to the folder on the XP system from the W98 system.

Only danger with setting up for EVERYONE is that EVERYONE with network access can access this folder.

You should then be able to share the folder as say sharedxp and call it from the W98 system as \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharedxp where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the XP system

The last system I set up was a 2000 Pro to W98 SE network where Win98 was involved with talking to a NTFS secured file system. I believe by selecting to share with everyone you can see the folder then from the Windows 98 system and copy those files.

You can also always just use the Win XP system for all the sending and receiving and the Win98 box is just a file server, not as secure as XP though for data storage due to FAT32, and probably no firewall.

On the Windows XP Box you will have to allow for File/Printer Sharing as well in the firewall exceptions to be able to establish CONNECTION from 98 to XP share I believe also otherwise firewall will block.

But if you can see the W98 systems data from the XP system you should be able to copy/paste the data to the XP side. Have You ENABLED the common 'access to files and printers' on 98 comp?
Things work fine from the win 98 machine point of view, it's the xp system that can't see the 98. I've TURNED the xp firewall off and sharing files and printers is default with the win xp cd wizard.
I just set up a folder in 98 called "shared98" and in my run box typed in "cmd" and then: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(98 IP addy)\shared98 Just below is what I received.

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Greg>\\192.168.123.136\shared98
Windows cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is correct an
d the destination computer is not busy or turned off. If Windows still cannot fi
nd the network path, contact your network administrator.

C:\Documents and Settings\Greg> I believe this is much easier than You think.
At Your W98 system right-click on the 'My network' and select properties; at the first tab click 'Access to files and printers' below and make sure that boxes prompting for 'Files of this computer can be shared' and 'Printers of this computer can be shared' are checked.

Cheers.what does that mean when you say
"Check if the LED diode in the near of RAM memory is it red or green." ?
He means open up your computer and look at the motherboard, usually on startup a little bright green light lights up.

Not sure why this was suggested as not all MBoards have LED's on them...The reason is that i think RAM memory is gone.
I had the same situation and after I changed the RAM memory i fixed the problem.

Solve : Windows 98 defragmentor?

Answer»

On my old laptop with Win98, I run the degragmentor and when it gets to 10% it restarts and says something like, "windows files have changed since last degrag., restarting..." Every time it gets to 10% it restarts and never gets anywhere.......... Are there any fixes to remedy this?

Scandisk.exe doesn't seem to get anywhere either, it restarts frequently when executed.Sounds like something is running that is altering Windows files while it's running. Make sure everything that can be closed is closed. All unnecessary running processes should be shut down, especially AV programs, as they can interfere with scanning.

I can't remember, can 98 run defrag in safemode? If so, that would work better. Less running. My old Gateway desktop is the same way. Hit ctrl alt delete to see what programs are running before you start scandisk or defrag. Highlight and end task all but the explorer window. Start with the programs you regognize as there is an order to some of these & if you shut down the wrong one first the screen will go black. Once you have closed all but explorer the maintenance wizard will work fine or you can scandisk & defrag in stand ALONE mode. Safe mode sounds like a possible fix..

Is there a way to view the processes in Win98, to see what's in RAM...I just manually removed 18 viruses and belive there may be more.........I've been having problems getting a scan to run.......Spybot S&D crashes before it even fully loads, and it is suppose to be compatible with win98.You might want to pop over to the Computer viruses and spyware forum and post the required logs there. One of the malware experts can help get that cleaned up.

I didn't want to jump the gun and say it the first time, but now that you've said they're there, those viruses are most likely why you can't complete defrag.Well I downloaded, Windows Process Viewer 1.1 and did some checking on the current processes running and nothing bad is there at the moment...But I will check the VIRUS forum anyway.Quote from: hot dog on April 21, 2009, 10:16:35 AM

And, I'll keep in mind that some viruses hide themselves as .dlls

I realize Avast would probably work, but for some reason the 802.11\b PCMCIA card it incredibly slow at DOWNLOADING...Tried installing Avast and it just sat there indicating that it is downloading the installer and only got 2% after about ten MINUTES... so I said "heck with it" I've been optimizing this laptop for 3 days straight, rooting through it and I think it's good enough for my dad's so-called "casuall" surfing.

As I said, I already got 18 viruses off of it manually....I used Clamwin and BazookaQuote from: hot dog on April 22, 2009, 12:08:39 AM
And, I'll keep in mind that .dlls are viruses....

They CAN be viruses. There are tons of helpful and necessary DLLs as well. I deciede to give Avast another shot and try installing it again and I got it going
It went a LOT faster this time for some reason....Before I must have had some hanging processes or something preventing it from downloading fast.

It's already found two worms, a .dll, and a trojan...........I like the siren feature...

Solve : Windows 98 & Adobe Acrobat?

Answer»

Is there a way to upgrade a Windows 98 system to be ABLE to view the new VERSION pdf files? I have Adobe Acrobat 5 & their website tells me I can't go any higher with Windows 98.

Gateway G6-400
Windows 98
Intel Pentium ll Processor
256MB RamDLoad and install Foxit Reader....FREEI installed the Foxit Reader & still can't view pdf files on website's. It works fine for the files on my COMPUTER but on a website all I get is the little box in the upper left hand corner just like Acrobat. What version of FoxIt did you install?
Only versions below 3.0 are 98 compatible. Thanks for the help!

I installed version 3.0 & it work's now. There was no prompt to re boot so I didn't when I should have. It seems to have SLOWED down my computer a great deal though. Would I be better off deleting the 3.0 version and dropping down to a lower version?Normally, it shouldn't be running in the background.
As I said, ver. 3 is not listed as Win 98 compatible.
Try version 2.3: http://www.filehippo.com/download_foxit/4658/Removed 3.0 & installed 2.3 as suggested. Work's fine now. I think the Ask toolbar that came with the newer version may have been what slowed everything down.

Thank you!You're welcome
It's always important to perform custom installation, so you can UNCHECK any unwanted "drive-by" installations.

Solve : Music CD's?

Answer»

Anyone know what can cause your music cd's to not play. The disc is loaded but instead of playing it moves to the next track. OR where it normally displays the current track, the numbers shift 1,2,3,4,5,6,...,all the way to the last track. What operating system are you running and what do you have for a computer for make/model or hardware specs, as well as what player are you using, and is this for all CD's?Thanks for the reply,
The system is self built, with a PC CHIPS M900 P4 Motherboard. 1.5 Ghz
Intel Tehama 850 Northbridge and Intel 82801BA (ICH2) Southbridge chipsets, combining support for two-channel RAMBUS DRAM (RDRAM), 2X/4X AGP (1.5V only), and the AC 97 codec.

The CD Drive is a pioneer DVR-A18MBK. It was taken from a much newer PC.
Reads other disks OK, but when it comes to some international music titles I used to test the audio, just skips from track to the next, not playing any. Never had that problem before.
If its not clear, the OS is Win98SE. It doesn't have a LOT of RAM but I may upgrade to 512 MB. I found out that is the most '98 can address. One more thing, I did want to mention was that I have two HD's one for backup or another OS which is not used but sitting on the bus. The CD Rom Drive is just one, on the second IDE, and it does work, the jumper is set to master. (Except the music thing)If it works for some audio discs and not others there must be something unique about the audio discs it does not work with. (I interpreted that it reads other discs OK to refer to other Audio discs, rather than CD-ROM discs)

What software are you using to play these Audio CDS?No, it does not work with any music cd's. Not even U.S. released disks.I'd start with swapping out the CD ROM if able to do so.Do you think that it is a firmware incompatibility. Because I can tell you the drive played music CD's in the system it was installed before, which was a newer Windows 7.If its jumping from track to track and not sticking on a track then its either the drive itself or software that handles how the drive operates. Since the drive should be good because it worked in the system it came out of for this other system, what software are you using to play the music CD's?

If it was where you just didnt have audio for a track, I would think it was the older audio stream where a analog audio connection was between a sound card and the CD or DVD ROM. But if its not sticking to tracks and keeps jumping to the next one without any audio then since you claim the drive is healthy it has to be software/driver related in how this drive is operating then and the drive alone cant handle audio CD's without this software/driver support.

Years ago I ran into an issue where CD's were only seen as digital / data and not audio. But my symptoms were not like the one you describe. For me with that problem it was that the disc would be inserted but it would just act like no disc was there because the audio CD wasnt a data disc. When my Offspring - Americana CD had a movies ( music videos ) on it in a data area and then the audio didnt play as normal CD that tipped me off to the fact that the drive was able to see the disc only if it was data, but the audio tracks it didnt know how to deal with. For me the solution was installing iTunes which had a media player that initialized my drive that then allowed playing of the music. The media player that came with Windows couldnt read them alone. But in your situation it sees the tracks, so this is an odd one.

Maybe you can find a old version of iTunes that will play your music through that drive or another legacy player that will initialize the drive properly.I know it sees the disk, and it tells you how long the tracks are and how long the whole CD is. Its like the play button isn't "wired" right.what software are you using to play the music CD's?Just the windows cd player. I tried LOADING another multimedia program that came with the video card. ATI player. But it does the same thing.Try Media Monkey...if same results you need a new CD drive...

Lately the drives have an approx lifespan of 2 years.

Solve : How do you make Windows XP be on drive C: ??

Answer»

To fix ANOTHER problem, I had to copy a backup of Windows XP onto another partition. Later I will tell you why. But the issue now is that an important program thinks it is on drive C: but it is not. I don't think install it again. There is a limitation the number of times I can activate it. So I need to resolve the drive C: thing.

Can you understand my dilemma?

There is an alternative, but I was HOPPING to avoid that.

Is there some way to make XP be on drive C: without a new install?
No...

How on earth did it get moved off of C: ? ?Technically it is possible to change the Mounted drive letter of the boot partition.

Of course, then it will likely be unbootable and you'll need to REINSTALL anyway.

If you have something else as C: you could create a symbolic link so that the program in question thinks it is on C:.If for some reason another drive or partition has the boot loader, the XP system will not give itself the C: drive letter.

In this age of Windows 10, this is old stuff I know. But I really need my Dragon Naturally Speaking and I can not install it again. Nuance has a rather Draconian copyright PROTECTION plan, after a number of re-installs even on the same machine, it will refuse to work nice. I have one working install o f DNS on a backup XP drive.

I was hoping to use it on the same physical hard drive. But DNS thinks it must be on drive C: instead of drive F: and I can not remember what the procedure is t to fix that. Years ago there was something in the MS knowledge base.

I am not sure is the assign tool would work.Still not sure why you are insisting on having 1 physical HDD...

I thought from last weeks Post you had moved Win 10 over to it's own HDD...I did it and I did not likest for mechanical reasons. Makes the case very crowded.
Patio, I just do not like having two HDD inside the case at one time.

The 500 GB HDD has ENOUGH room for three OS.
But you are right, separate HDD for XP is much easier.
Must be a tiny case if 2 HDD's make it seem cluttered and filled up...

Get a larger case.

I pull em off tree lawns all the time on garbage day.

Solve : Errors trying to erase my HD using Win95?

Answer»

IBM Aptiva 2168/Win95/48MB

I am attempting to erase or reformat my HD using Win95 as I sell my PC. I searched for and tried a few methods, including:

1. Using my Win 95 Disk which says go to add/remove programs and uninstall. I accidentally UNINSTALLED Win95 update1 instead.
2. I rebooted to the Windows recovery disk. At the prompt I entered 'format c: /s' and receive the reply "INVALID drive"
3. I rebooted to the Windows recovery disk. At the prompt I entered 'Uninstall.exe' and received:
"file C:\MSDOS.SYS is missing or invalid
"C:\ is not accessible"
"C:\SUHDLOG.--- cannot be opened
then the program continues for a few seconds and ends with: Unable to restore the location of your MS-DOS system file
Error CODE 1

The bad news is that this PC is not connected to the internet. The good news is that my 'G' drive (I think) is a copy of my C drive in case I can use that somehow. By the way, from the RUN command. "format (drive LETTER) still works (I was able to reformat my 'H' drive).

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Scott
If you have the system recovery media set for this computer, boot off of the CD and at the menu where it asks you what type of recovery you want to perform, there should be an option to tell it to wipe all data and set it back to factory. This will format the hard drive and install Windows 95 fresh to the system, so that you can sell it with Windows 95 running on it.

If you dont have the recovery media then you will need a bootable floppy or CD and then booted off of this media perform the Format C: where the Format command is located on the Floppy or CD and from the A: prompt if a Floppy or from the D: or E: prompt ( whatever your CD ROM is mapped as ) run the format instruction from there to format the C: drive.Quote

At the prompt I entered 'format c: /s' and receive the reply "invalid drive"

This is by design. You can't FORMAT C: if Windows itself resides on or is using C:. The only way to format a drive in use by the system is to reboot, usually from floppy, as Dave says.
It's C:\...not /...hence the drive error."Ouch!' as I smack myself fro not mentioning that I have both the Win95 companion CD and a bootable Recovery Disk.

I tried to boot off the Win95 CD and received:

Solve : No Mouse or Keyboard in WfW 3.11 (DOS 6.22)?

I've got a Compaq LAPTOP with an Intel 486DX2-50 with 8MB of RAM and a massive 350MB hard disk drive!

I've just installed MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 for Workgroups and the KEYBOARD and mouse (well, trackball) are not working. They worked OK during the install as I had to move the cursor around to tick boxes etc and the keyboard was FINE as I had to enter the key etc.

It's been such a long, long time since using kit like this I'm not sure what to do!I doubt a trackball mouse will ever work on WFW...

Is there a headset or modern speaker(the green plug and pink(or red) plug) driver for Windows 95?See Here...I saw the sound topic and there is a drive for DOSBox only. I need a real PC driver...Audio DRIVERS aren't for the ports, they are for the audio hardware that drives them. You would need to determine the sound hardware. That would either be an add-in sound CARD such as a Sound Blaster 16, or some SORT of INTEGRATED solution on the motherboard (For the time period, ESS AudioDrive was fairly popular as an integrated audio solution, for example). From there you would need to locate appropriate Windows 95 drivers for those components.

I am USING ZOTAC BI320Does the Zotac have in the bios the option "USB legacy support" if so you could try enabling it. You don't say if you are running the windows in a virtual machine or booting from the hard drive as separate copies?

This driver may help https://www.helpjet.net/Fs-97532993-89234260-57538291.html

Solve : To many processes and handles [Win 10]?

Answer»

I swear Windows 10 has way more processes than 7. After optimising and disabling most non MS services and programs on startup, and generally disabling most things I can, I still have over 170 processes (>80K handles and 2500 threads) which is lover than my nearly 300 before. Does anyone have any more tips on reducing all of the processes? I have a OC 4.2GHz which sits at around 40% utilisation and that is shocking. It is legit bottlenecking my 970 which is something I never saw coming. (Intel i5 6600K @ 3.5GHz OC to 4.2) I've been USING Wise game booster as well as GIGABYTE's Game mode to help but it dosen't do much ANYMORE as I've manually disabled most of that.

Background services are split up into more separate processes now, scaled based on the system's capability.

You would want to identify specifically what processes are using additional CPU. If you cannot see anything specifically allotted to a process, then the CPU time is likely being used by a faulty or bad driver. Audio Drivers, Graphics Drivers, and certain Network Drivers are sometimes responsible for that. Webb browsers and particularly SAY youtube videos can use up a good amount of CPU time as well, particularly for higher resolutions and/or if hardware acceleration is turned off.

However, I don't think your problem is related to having too many processes and handles. By way of example, Right now, I have 292 Processes, nearly 4K threads, and nearly 250,000 handles, but everything FUNCTIONS normally. and I don't see excessive idle CPU utilization.

Solve : Win 98 computer?

Answer»

Have you read this?

http://novaonline.nvcc.edu/eli/ist216mb/summer/installing_windows_95.htm
This may be of some help.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/187632
It provides details about HOLD to make startup up floppies for older Windows version.

When you have a single floppy, you have to insert another floppy in the same drive, wait, then put in the first floppy, wait , repeat until done.
Just for information I have used HIREN's BOOT CD and then install whatever Windows you need.

Solve : Printing Using Generic Text Printer Driver?

Answer»

I have a Windows 3.11 system where I'm using the Generic Text Print Driver (TTY.DRV) to print data. I'm capturing the data on another computer via COM port (using a parallel to serial converter). Using Notepad, I try printing Hello World and capturing the text on another computer. The text that comes through is gibberish (Hahhk skrh`).

I am doing this successfully on other machines. Is there something within Windows 3.11 or within its parallel port that needs to be set up differently (if possible)?
SOUNDS like you have wrong baud rate or parity bit ISSUE. I'd double check your serial communication settings to make sure they match between the parallel to serial converter and the computer thats communicating to it via serial.

Other far less common would be if you were using mouse or other device on Com1 and Serial Com on COM3 and they share same interrupt and so moving the mouse would mess up the data communications, as well as COM 2 and Com 4 in USE at same time that also use same interrupt.

Your close to GETTING it to work because the placeholders for each character match up for

Hahhk = 5 characters and skrh`= 5 characters
Hello = 5 characters and World = 5 characters

Also parallel is slower than serial and so I would go with the slowest baud rate for the converter if not default of 9600 baud and set the computer to match that and see if slowing the baud fixes the issue.

Solve : Compaq Presario CDS 520 - Error :(?

Answer»

Hi guys!

So I was rummaging through a lot of old stuff and I found that my grandfather had saved my very first computer (that he bought me), a Compaq Presario CDS 520.

I plugged it in, plugged in a keyboard, BOOTED up, first into Windows 3.1 then into "tabworks", i found a goldmine of all of my old stuff that I tinkered with when I was a baby. Awesome!! I browse around for five minutes in awe.

Then suddenly I get this error.. "TABWORKS caused Segment Load Failure in module MSACM.DLL at 0001:026A", tabworks then closes and i'm left with blank explorer and no options.

After a reboot, I try to boot up windows again and immediately get that error and get kicked back out to the OS choice (MS-Dos or Windows)

Does anybody happen to know what might be going on or if there's any hope of just recovering my old data? That's really what's important to me !

See pic below for error

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]well, im not too familiar with Windows 3.1 as i went from only Dos to Windows 95 to XP. however, clearly something is currupt/missing. If i where you id get a USB to IDE and transfer anything you can over if you need anything off of that dinosaur. Quote from: Naitsrk on April 28, 2015, 08:57:27 PM

blank explorer

You'll need to be a bit more specific. Windows 3.1 did not have any SORT of "Explorer"- it had Program Manager- if Program Manager exited, Windows closed as well. However, looking into it, TABWORKS is some sort of shell program. You can change the SHELL program back to program manager. At the DOS Prompt you can edit C:\Windows\system.ini and find a "SHELL=" line. It will likely be pointing at the TABWORKS program. change it to:

Code: [Select]SHELL=C:\WINDOWS\PROGMAN.EXE
and then try starting Windows.

Otherwise, it may be caused by a failed sound card or sound device. MSACM.DLL is the sound mapper. You could try removing any sound drivers, or changing the INI file for TABWORKS (I'd guess TABWORKS.INI in either it's install folder or C:\WINDOWS) and see if there are any sound options and disable them.

You could also try removing the Sound card drivers from the listing found in the "Main" Program group, run "Control Panel", and open Drivers. Hi Naitsrk,

Did you have any luck solving this issue?

I was WONDERING, are you using the English version of TabWorks?
