Solve : Clipboard Image Win95-98?

Answer»

What is a good way to get a screenshot off of Win 95, 98 clipboard? I don't have R/W drives on them but would an image fit on a FLOPPY? Is clipboard format BITMAP? Paste it to MSPaint, and then you can save it as a bitmap file. it should fit on a floppy disk unless you use a very high display resolution.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 01, 2015, 04:36:25 PM

Thx for that quick reply BC, now that I think about it, I probably will be enlarging them. I GOING to look for a couple of r/w drives so I can BURN them on cd.
Would win95 support that? I think 98 does.Get some more RAM and move up to Windows 98SE.
What purpose would enlarging a screenshot serve?Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 01, 2015, 05:05:30 PM

Enlarge them on the other computer, after copying them from the floppy disk. You'll want to convert them to .PNG files or another compressed format anyway, I imagine.

Solve : win98 reinstall?

Answer»

Hi folks , haven't been here in a while due to many reasons but up and running again! Anyways I was browsing thru some old posts and found one where I pointed out that the win98 cd was bootable. Original win98 4.10 cd. Others disputed and said win98 was not. Well I have the original cd and the book and it does boot from cd. I found a web page that might come in handy for those reinstalling 98 and he provides instructions and screen shots and boots from cd. These screens are exactly what happens when I install win98 without the use of a floppy.

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/win98/install98cd/indexfullpage.htm#.URSqhR2PavsI have one Windows 98 (SE) disc that works just like yours, and I have another Windows 98 (SE) disc that requires a boot floppy. My Windows ME also needs a boot floppy if I remember correctly.

So maybe there were 2 kinds? Wikipedia also seems to say that 98 was bootable without a boot diskette.Quote from: kbit on February 08, 2013, 12:46:38 AM

In the THREAD you are probably referring too, Quaxo said that Windows 98 FE CDs were not Bootable.

You replied by saying that All Windows 98 Discs were bootable. That is patently false. I've never seen a Windows 98FE disc that was bootable; So, even if we allow for the case where retail Windows 98FE discs exist that are bootable, they aren't all bootable, so what you said wasn't any more correct.

Assuming, of course, There are Windows 4.10.1998 Discs that do boot from the CD-ROM. Maybe they exist. I've never seen one. Quaxo evidently hasn't either.

However, that said, I'm not saying your lying. OEM's often released separate packaged releases of the OS, which included the retail product as well as, if needed, extra drivers on the disc for Windows 98 to use to install DEVICES when it was installed. Since they were designed to install from nothing (sort of like a factory restore disc TODAY, only- you know- it was an Actual OS CD...), they could boot directly from the CD-ROM. Windows 98 OEM(4.10.1998) discs are probably very hard to come by, since they only ever came with new PCs and people generally lost them, or they got scratched, etc.

That sounds right to me. I've seen bootable 98SE discs but never a bootable 98FE disc.

Yes, definitely, Win98 was about where CD-Burners were starting to become affordable, if still rather high-end, peripherals, so OS customization was still AROUND. I did a few *ahem* searches and couldn't find any customized versions available now, but I don't doubt many people made them in the day, long before Internet speeds made it reasonable to download an entire CD of Data.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 08, 2013, 11:35:32 PM

Right, and people could have made their customized versions bootable. One of the simpler ways to do this would be to put the contents of a DOS bootdisk onto the CD along with Windows 98 and have it boot to the DOS prompt and all they'd have to do would be to type setup.exedug out the disk and it is oem , must be bad ram in my head , thought it was retail, here is pic

Solve : Can't change display settings in Win 98?

Answer»

Because a monitor FAILED and I temporarily needed to use an old one, I needed to change my screen area (in control panel display properties) to 640 by 480 pixels. Bad mistake! Now I can't change it back, because everything is so large that the button that will let me do it is too LOW to show. I can't move the window up far enough to reveal it. It looks as though I can't change my display settings until I have changed my display settings.

If there is a way to do make the change from the command line, by editing an .ini file, or in the REGISTRY, I can probably manage that, but how?

Am I screwed or what?

Well, problem solved, although I doubt I could retrace my steps. What I did made things even worse for awhile but FINALLY I restored the CORRECT video driver and was able to change the display settings back. It would be helpful if someone here knew of a surer and safer way in case it happens again.

Solve : win95 says himem.sys is missing when it's not?

Answer»

+1 in regards to WinImage to create the floppy image.I'd get yourself a copy of DOS 6.22 to install Windows 95 with, or a Windows 95 STARTUP Disk. One problem you may be facing is that the himem.sys file you are using is Windows 98's version which is newer than Windows 95 is normally used with. You cant just mix and match Windows 95 and Windows 98 DOS components like you are and that may be why your running into problems.

A long time ago I was able to install Windows 95 clean to a systems hard DRIVE via use of FreeDOS installed FIRST to hard drive. Then Windows 95 setup.exe run from FreeDOS environment. This was a long long time ago ( 2001 ) and while it may still work, I am not sure if the current FreeDOS will work with Windows 95 or not. FreeDOS however is not Microsoft DOS, its an open source LINUX kernel type of DOS that works with most MSDOS applications etc.

http://www.freedos.org/

Installing Windows 95/98 trick to setup.exe execution ( SETUP /NM /IS ) as seen in link below.

http://www.freedos.org/technotes/technote/228.html

Quote

Every so often, someone will ask about using FreeDOS to install Windows95 or WINDOWS98. So we should have a technote on that. Bernd provides this advice:

SETUP /NM /IS
(NoMachine checking , IgnoreScandisk)

Later on the Windows install program might or might not tolerate the FreeDOS kernel, shell and programs. If installing win98, try a clean (f5, no drivers) FreeDOS bootup. No XMS driver will have been loaded then but win98 has the good old 'xmsmmgr.exe' commandline XMS driver which can install itself at runtime.

BTW: You have to add CD-ROM support to mount the CD or DVD ROM. Oaks driver usually works with most. But you will need MSCDEX in order to access the optical drive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSCDEX Also the drive probably needs to be IDE for oaks driver to work. I havent tested it with any newer systems with SATA.

That is not necessarily true. They can in fact be mixed and matched as desired. Fundamentally the only thing setup needs is access to the CD-ROM Drive- As I recall it executes in DOS mode first the reboots and continues setup after installing some basics. If himem.sys or emm386.exe cause problems for the setup program- well, they shouldn't be running anyway. I don't even think the win98 CD-ROM boot even loads any XMS drivers. At any rate, the himem.sys that windows 95 will install will be the windows 95 version.

Using FreeDOS to install Windows 95- or any OS, is going Over the top, and won't fix their problem anyway since they already have Windows 95 installed.

Yeah, I know. I mean, the Windows ME CD has 510MB of Data, whereas MS-DOS 6 is 4.2MB! What a piece of bloatware ME MUST be.

Win2K until Win7 came out was one of the most memory efficent OS's to date...
You are losing credibility here the farther you run with this IMHO......well...today I bought 512 MB of RAM from the commies in Hong KONG for $6.90 for my Inspiron 8000, and will upgrade to Windows 2000....Quote from: patio on April 01, 2014, 05:40:34 AM

Solve : accessing android on win98se?

Answer»

So I need to access my samsung galaxy TAB 3 using my old etower 400i3 running win98se.
the pc has usb 2.0 drivers and kernelEx
I dont have it hooked up to the internet either.
I want to be able to hook my tablet up to the pc via usb and access the files.I think you would have better luck finding a linux distro that would run on this hardware that would have support for that before a tool for Windows 98SE would. If you want to do it with Windows, Windows XP would run on that Celeron 400Mhz if you have at least 128MB RAM. I'd suggest 256MB minimum. Windows XP can run on a CPU as slow as Pentium II 233Mhz and I have heard of people using Windows XP to interface with samsung galaxy.

Windows 98SE is a very grey AREA with USB device support, and if you can use a more modern OS which has tools and drivers that are based around .Net you would have better luck getting it to work.

The Celeron 400Mhz will crawl with Windows XP with adequate RAM, but it would run it. I had a Celeron 500Mhz being used as a file server for about a year running Windows XP with 256MB RAM, and it initially ran on 128MB RAM, but acted up with file sharing requests on 128MB RAM, with 256MB RAM it behaved until the socket 370 fan died and the Celeron cooked and died a blistering death. The thermocouple for monitoring the CPU must have been DEFECTIVE to allow for the melt down of the CPU.

Oh, well I might go with installing linux or something similar.

The specifications of the pc are the following

400mhz intel celeron processor 128kb l2 cache
32 mb syncdram 256mb max
4.3gb hard DRIVE
3d 4mb agp graphics

Is there any linux distro that would work with this?A suggestion for that old system for Linux would be Fedora Core 4, ( BUT ) you will want to have 256MB RAM installed.

I ran Fedora Core 4 on a Celeron 500Mhz with 256MB RAM and 13GB IDE HDD before and it ran it quite well. However there was SOFTWARE that I needed to run that was Windows required and so I pulled the 13GB HDD out and installed a 20GB HDD into this small HP Pavilion and installed XP to it instead.

*Your going to want 256MB RAM and a larger hard drive ( 8.4GB or larger ) for a Linux install. If my memory is correct, Fedora Core 4 required like 5.3GB of HDD space for the install so 4.3GB will not be large enough. 4.3GB however with Windows XP SP0 with no updates would eat up about 2.5 to 3GB of 4.3GB and would be tight, and 384MB of the HDD would be allocated to swap with 256MB RAM present.

If you need to spend money to meet the requirements for such an install such as to get the 256MB RAM and/or HDD to 8.4GB or larger, I'd look into buying a better system instead vs sinking money into a computer this old.

As a start on this, I would work backwards.... first research an andriod interface application that is Linux based, and then look to see what the requirements are of this application with attention to what Kernel Version and/or distro is required to run it. Then check to see if you can find a older distro that meets these requirements that also matches to that of your older hardware specs... in which your still going to have to get the RAM and HDD specs to meet the distro requirements.

Windows XP would be the easiest method to interface with the android with 128MB or 256MB RAM if you had a legal copy of XP available. However if you dont have a legal copy of XP available then the money to get it would be best spent finding a Pentium 4 for like $80 with 512MB RAM or greater and a 40GB or karger HDD etc which comes with XP OS in the deal.

I was thinking of suggesting a Linux Live CD distro:

"SliTaz GNU/Linux is supported on all machines based on the i486 or x86 Intel compatible processors. The Live CD has four variants of SliTaz, requiring from 192 MB of RAM for the Core system to 48 MB for a text mode and X Window System. Slitaz can even run in 16 megabytes of RAM and a little swap memory.
SliTaz GNU/Linux - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SliTaz_GNU/Linux"

You still need more RAM, and you don't want to buy some for a system like that. You could try a dual boot Linux/Windows 98, and use about 256 MB swap space.

Solve : Win98 shortcut help?

Answer»

Hello, everyone this is my first post. I enjoy this site lots of good stuff.

I got this win98 machine that I put together to play all my favorite DOS games and such. I made a DOS menu to load various Drivers and settings I put the menu in autoexec.bat and config.sys in c:\ and it loads before windows starts. But when I restart a game in DOS MODE from windows my menu won't appear it just boots straight to the game.

Is there anyway to boot the menu first? or is there a way to change the entire default windows dos shortcut settings for my menu CONFIGURATION?

It would be nice if I didn't have to MANUAL change every games configuration there's a lot of games on this 40GB hdd. I think there was a way to change default shortcut setting within a FILE in the windows dir. But I can't remember which file it was.

Thanks, ZachHave you looked into PIF files? I think you can create a custom PIF that will load a batch file. The reason autoexec.bat doesn't execute is "Restart in MS-DOS Mode" doesn't actually restart the machine. It's basically Exiting Windows.

When you do so however the "dosstart.bat" batch file in the Windows folder is run. You can add "C:\autoexec.bat" to that batch file to get it to run your autoexec.bat.Thanks for your replies. I just found out about that dosstart.bat when searching around I was able to get it to load my autoexec.bat, but is there a config.sys for dosstart.bat or a way to get it to load one? .pif will work but will have to manual input my menu for each game sort of defeats the point. I'll check into pifs some more MAYBE something I missed.

Solve : Windows 98 on 166Mhz pentium 1 with manual power supply plug??

Answer»

Hello Computer World!,

I recently was going through some old stuff and found some left over computer parts. I ended up building a Old computer out of parts i found. Anyways i wish to use this computer as a simple DOS gamer for i still had my original hard drive with classic dos games. Anyways, this computer was all good to go. So i pulled out my copy of WINDOWS 98 SE and installed it. It ran fine, found all my drivers and ran my games. However, the computer being an Pentium 1 166Mhz it still has one of those old power supply's that have the Actual Power plug on it. The power is not controled by the motherboard, there is a physical cord going to the power supply with the power. So naturally the OS should notice this and be able to set itself that when it prepares to power off, it should give me the screen saying.
"Its now safe to turn off your computer"
Instead it just hangs at the Windows 98 is shutting down screen and when i do power it off, next time i power it on it says
"windows has not been shut down properly the last time used" or something like that....

Any ideas on how to fix this?

hARDWARE
166 Mhz pentium 1 CPU
32mb of EDO RAM
4gb hard drive + 5gb secondary drive
CD ROM
WIndows 98 SE Disable ACPI in the Bios. Sorry for taking a while to get back.. I dont seem to have that option in the bios. For atleast i cant find it. I looked through all the submenus and through power settings and nada. So...this isn't a power supply problem, it's a shutting down problem. Getting to "It's now safe..." is success. All AT power supplies have switches.

Anyway, does this happen in safe mode? Any external hardware that appears after booting? Are any CDs left in drives? (which is fine, but might cause a hang in some cases)Hunter quest,
Thats what im stuck at.. It doesnt show that screen. " Its now safe.." it just locks up on Windows 98 is preparing to shut down.
I Love playing classic dos and non dos titles. LOL only reason i wanna try and revive this computer. only thing is it doesn't have USB. Older mobo. But no there is no DVD in the disk drive, once it makes it to the Windows is shutting down screen the hard drive freezes and nothing. Its a clean install too. 98 Se. any other ideas?
Does that mean it won't shut down from safe mode?

USB can always be added via PCI - the right PCI, there's DIFFERENT incompatible versions.Go into your win98 device manager and look for something like this:

Click properties on the items that say ACPI in this menu. I think you should be able to get it disabled SOMEWHERE in there.

This link may help more, but you want to do the opposite of what they are trying to do: http://eddy-current.com/shutdown.htmHi

Normally when this happens it is either the acpi settings as someone else has said or that there is a problem with your hardware with windows fast shut down enabled this can be TURNED off as described here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187607.

Solve : Missing DLL File Error?

Answer»

I am in the process of resurrecting an old machine I have (the one in my sig) for the purpose of collecting and playing old windows 95 and DOS games. I bought an unused full version of windows 95 and installed it then the FX5200 Graphics card and jumped through all the hoops to get the driver installed. Now this error comes up when I try to start a program that says "A required .DLL file, DINPUT.DLL, was not found." that keeps the program from opening. I fdisked and formatted this hard drive and have not had it on the internet yet. The only thing I've put on it from the internet is the Nvidia driver from Nvidia's site. After some searches on google for some answers I've only come up with people who want me to buy their registry cleaner or pcFixer which I think are just so much snake oil. Does someone here have any experience with this problem?Logged back in to my win 95 computer and am getting several more different errors (oh what fun) reminds my of the days when we were first using win 95, lol.
"The NVSVC.EXE file is linked to missing export USER32.DLL:EnumdisplayDevicesA." "Error loading C:\Windows\SYSTEM\NvCpl.dll. One of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found." Well I think Im going to Format C:/s and start over. Starting to get my DOS legs again. Did the Format C:/s command but now it will not boot to the boot disk for some reasonYou need a space between the colon and the FORWARD slash.
You don't have to format again, transfer system.
From A:\

sys c:

It will say "System Transferred" when completed. Not sure why format /s was used anyways in this instance...
I always used format /u which is an unconditional format...then booted to the floppy and follow commandoe's lead above.

At any rate it's just a matter of getting it right here..so starting over is a good option.Quote from: Computer_Commando on March 15, 2013, 12:27:44 PM

Thanks for that info, I did that but am still getting all the missing file error dialog boxes. Is there somewhere I can go to get the missing files and install them? You sure can. Where, precisely, you must seek. I guess system32 is a good folder for dinput.

If the presence (I mean absence of the error) of the file won't help, I think you might want a different graphics card in Win95.OK, I have been searching for an answer to this problem for quite some time and found this tonight on another forum.

I use ATi Radeon 8500 128MB's in my Windows 95 boxes. I have an original drivers disc for one from back when 95 was still supported.

Later ATi cards may work as well, but it's been a while since I tried experimenting with them. I think I had a 9200 working at one time, but I believe my 9800 XT's had some issues.

Note - there will be various errors about missing DLLs, exports, etc etc unless you be sure to install DX8 and several other updates before attempting to install any "newer" drivers. One DLL in PARTICULAR that installers will complain about is MFC42.DLL. It is contained in the updates or it can be copied from a 98 machine.

Is DX8 a windows 95 update? I have a windows 98SE machine, if I knew which files to copy.According to the list, the newest supported version of DirectX for Windows 95 is 8.0a. Any cards that don't rely on later versions (9, 10, 34..) and have drivers (Generally, up to Win ME) could work.

I imagine graphics drivers for Win95 are a headache in general. No reason not to go up to Win98 at all as it'll support / play all old DOS games...
That way you get better support for drivers and whatnot.Sticking with getting Windows 95 going since its my favorite OS. It does have some quirks when loading drivers but I'm not sure if it's because it has quirks or they are just not the right drivers. I did manage to find the right driver with some help for my onboard ATI 3D Rage Pro graphics chipset and am up to 24 bit color now and am working with onboard sound which is supposed to be Crystal Sound Fusion. As soon as I get onboard sound going then I will try a more powerful graphics card and sound card. ATM Win95 is not recognizing the drivers for Crystal Sound Fusion that I installed, so that is my project for the moment.
If you are installing DirectX8 you need to install DC95Inst.EXE first and then install DX80eng.exe.

DC95Inst.EXE here - http://download.microsoft.com/download/platformsdk/Redist/4.71.1015.0/W95/EN-US/DC95Inst.EXE

DX80eng.exe here - http://web.archive.org/web/20120105105445/http://download.microsoft.com/download/winme/Update/8.0a/W9XMe/EN-US/DX80eng.exeWell I stuck with it and with some help from another forum got everything up and running. It's been 15+ YEARS since I've run this OS and had to relearn it's ways and they are wierd. This was before the day of just executing a bunch of executable driver files to equip your computer. All drivers for hardware and software have to be loaded but not OPENED on the root of the C drive. Then you have to go through ADD, REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel to install everything. Easiest way is to press Browse and select the executable file for each program that you put on the C drive, then it takes you through the install process for that program. I was able to install my Nvidia GeForce FX5200 256mb graphics card that way without any PROBLEMS as well as directX, onboard sound and video drivers and whatever I wanted. I also got rid of the error messages caused by the newer type drivers my Nvidia card uses by installing MSCONFIG and just removing them from the start menu. Everythings running good now and of course it runs Win95 games perfectly which is my purpose for this computer.

Solve : Home network: print and file sharing?

Answer»

Windows 7 PC and Windows 98 PC are physically connected through a router in a Home Network. Both are connected to the Internet through the router. However, file and print sharing does not work. The firewall of the antivirus appears to ALLOW this sharing between the PCs so there seems to be something ELSE preventing the sharing. Help on NETWORKING discusses when the PCs have different Windows but Windows 98 is not included.Further on this problem. The two desk top computers (Windows 7 and Windows 98) are connected to the Dlink 2380B router by cables. So is the games console. 2 laptops are connected by wireless. So the Home network has 5 devices. However, the Windows 7 only recognizes that COMPUTER in the Home network. I suspect the 2380B has to be set to recognize all 5 but Dlink adviser suggested wrongly that it was a firewall problem.Quote from: angile on November 22, 2012, 12:20:32 AM

Solve : DOD 5.0 Issue?

Answer»

I’m hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. I have an old computer system (1993 Vintage) that is running dos 5.0. I have an application that automatically runs when the computer boots. The software works fine when running on the old system although every once in a while this error does pop up. I use this application a lot and wanted to see if it WOULD work running on newer computer. I created a mirror COPY of the older drive and formatted a newer hard drive. (It’s an exact mirror i.e. fat file system, hard drive SIZE etc…)

Everything looked like it was going to work out fine until I went to a new menu and the program crashed. I can reboot the system and use it for a short while before getting caught in the same loop. When the program crashes, I’m prompted to enter the time and date or press enter to continue. I have entered a time and day, as well as just pressing enter, the results are the same. I believe I found the file that generates the loop; however what I am unsure of is why.

Here is the line in the .bat file that either starts the program or this time & date loop.

Code: [Select] if errorlevel 200 goto ERROR
if errorlevel 100 goto START
goto END

I don’t know what the errorlevel 200 is referring to, or what conditions cause an error level 200. Anyone have any ideas on what I should look into next.
The batch script is TESTING a value returned by a program or command. Errorlevels are not always a sign of an actual "error" or problem, so the immediately preceding line of the batch file (before the first if "errorlevel" line) will tell you what is the source of the return code. In general errorlevels such as this are tailored by the program creator so an idea of what it is will be helpful. Best of all if you POST the entire batch script, else we are just guessing here.

Have you been forgetting to use the "safely remove hardware" sitch icon on the tray when dis'connecting ? ?

Thanks for your replies I always use safely remove I have since posting fixed the problem by changing the Drive. Thanks Ojas It may be setup for a specific drive letter and that letter may already be used ?
Do other USB hard drives function normally on the "problem" PC ?The drive WOULD still show up...just assigned with a different drive letter...

Solve : Reinstall Win 98?

I was GIVEN an old Dell Optiplex 150 Series. That's about all I know about it for now.
Up until now about every tenth boot would take me to Windows 98. What I see now on boot up is a constant "no Primary disk 0 installed". "No Primary disk 1 installed". BIOS also shows no hard disk installed. I attempted a REINSTALL from a licensed OS but after several entries was told the same , "no hard disk installed".
Wondering what to TRY next? overthehill
Hard drive is probably dead. Likely not more than 4GB IDE.Thanks, C_C. I have a Samsung 40 GB IDE that I'll try . overthehill

Solve : SSL Protocol Error?

Answer»

Since I updated Chrome Browser and Windows updates on Sunday I have been unable to connect to the internet even though my wifi shows as connected - the other computers in the house are working fine. I get a popup box saying 'SSL Protocol Error'. I uninstalled Chrome browser as I thought it was something to do with that but still not connecting. I have tried System Restore but the COMPUTER wont restore to the SPECIFIED dates. Don't know what else to try. Help!!Sounds like you may be infected...what protection apps do you have ...and when's the last time you updated them and ran scans ? ?Hi,

I've RUN anti-virus scan and Malwarebytes but no virus showed upHave you checked in your Browser (which one is it ?? ) that SSL accept is on ? ?Hi,

I havn't checked my browser to see if SSL accept is on - now that I've uninstalled Chrome I'm now left with Internet Explorer and Firefox. How/where do I check to see if SSL is on?In FireFox::
Tools/Options/Advanced/Encryption...
Make sure both SSL and TSL are checked...
Re-boot after and LOGIN and check. Both are already checkedThen somethings changed w/your wi-fi setup...
Try it wired and see if it works...
If so re-visit your wireless setup including all router options.I've unplugged the ethernet cable out of the desktop computer and plugged it in to the netbook but it won't connect to the internet even though the icon is still showing as connected to the internetWhat all happened prior to this other than installing/un-installing Chrome ? ?
Were you trying Chrome because of connection issues ? ?

Also is this the PC with Win7 on it ?The computer was working fine until I updated the Chrome browser which I've been using for about 12 months. The PC I'm writing this on isn't the one with the problem. However I think I've sorted the problem out, I've restored the computer back to factory settings and its working fine again. Thank you very much for all your suggestions.Good News indeed...glad you're fixed up and Welcome Aboard...

Solve : System Information wont show Uptime?

Answer»

Hi
I have an HP pavillion with windows ME and the system info wont show the UPTIME,trying to find out how many HOURS it has been used total, any ideas?

Thanks
Rod
You're lucky it even runs. Windows ME is no longer supported by Microsoft so you won't be getting any security updates.Shagger1,
Ninjatex is correct. Microsoft has dropped all support for windows ME however, i wouldn't even bother trying to fix it due to the the fact that windows ME had many issues.. that where unresolved.. try either upgrading it to Windows XP if the specs are good enough.. if not.. Windows 2000 was a great ALTERNATIVE. I still use it under an OLD IBM 300GL personal computer running at 500Mhz pentium 3 with 384 megs of ram and a 10GB drive. The magic of windows 2000 is the fact that the kernal is taken from windows NT yet its still has the same compatibility that windows XP had. Good luck. Hi
I have an HP pavillion with windows ME and the system info wont show the uptime, trying to find out how many hours it has been used total, any ideas?

Thanks
Rod

No version of windows shows the total time a PC was used.

In fact, I don't believe any OS keeps this information. Windows NT (NT4, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, and 8) will show the uptime (that is, amount of time since last boot) in Task MANAGER. Windows 9x (95,98, and ME) have this information, too. You need to use the System Information tool to see it (Start->Programs->System Tools->System Information. uptime should appear on the right-hand side.

I apologize for actually trying to answer your question instead of complaining about the OS you use. ::)
You can see uptime with tools that calculate it based on the events windows logs on power on and off.
For example, I use this one (free edition limited to last 3 weeks): http://www.neuber.com/free/pctime/index.html

EDIT: I FORGOT to mention that TOTAL uptime and last and first shutdown and startup times are recorded somewhere by windows, at least on 2000 or newer. Don't remember what tool accessed that though (probably something like speccy)

Solve : downgrading Win7 to Vista w/restore disks?...?

Answer»

I upgraded to Windows 7, only to realize some of important software is incompatible. So I wish to downgrade to Vista. I have restore disks from the Vista installation. Has anyone done this before? Will this work with no problems?
Any info. or thoughts on the subject is appreciated.I cringe at Vista and avoid it LIKE the PLAGUE... but if you must downgrade, If it were my computer, I'd install a removable drive bay which allows for 2 Hard drives to be installed into removable drive cradles and have 1 drive with Vista and the other with Windows 7. This gives you the best of both worlds for under $100 if picking up a $65 SATA drive and 2 x SATA Removable Hard Drive bays @ $14 each + shipping and installing 1 of the 2 bays and installing existing Hard drive to 1 cradle and the new hard drive to the other to CONTAIN Vista.

2 x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817999024

and 1 x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148764

If you Downgrade, you will have to be wiping out all information and installing clean Vista from restore set. You will need to backup your important data. Licensing if you went with my suggestions of 2 drives is legal because only 1 instance of Vista or Vista/Win7 upgrade edition will be used at a time.

Only downgrade I have ever done was to get rid of Vista as soon as the computer was taken out of the box new and installing Windows XP Pro to it.

I use these removable drive configurations on my SYSTEMS that are multipurpose. I can isolate projects by labelling the drives and pop one out and the other in and KEEP data seperate etc and run different environments quickly. Other alternative to this is using Virtual Machines, but for some projects its best to work with real physical machines than a virtual system within another physical system running concurrently. The restore CD's will wipe all your existing data...if you're cool with that it will work...
Remember to DLoad/find your Vista drivers and install them after the restore.

Solve : HP Printer issues?

Answer»

hOPE SOME ONE CAN HELP. I am running windows 98SE in my computer. I have an HP 932C deskjet printer to use. My problem is I can not install the printer via USB only with a parallel port. I have installed this printer on an ME and XP machine in the PAST via USB. What am I missing?Windows 98 has known deficiencies in dealing with some USB devices which is likely why the printer works with other O/S and does not with 98. Sometimes this can be OVERCOME with specific drivers for the device related to association with win98. Sometimes a specific protocol of sequence of ACTIVATION of the usb device can also WORK. I would suggest you first do a search for drivers for the printer that are required for win 98 association. If i understand you you can connect the printer and it functions via a parallel port on the 98 computer. So why not just do that?truenorth No 98 or ME drivers are available for that printer. 95 & 2000 drivers are available. Try 2000 drivers.

Solve : Having trouble reinstalling 98?

Answer»

No matter what RAM is involved the OP is cornfused,,,I believe we need an explanation from the O/P as to WHY we are still continuing this discussion when in reply one member DaveLembeke stated this "The CD came from an Emachine

Just a FYI, this CD was only intended to be used legally with the original computer that it came with. Lots of the CD's that came with builds like this will only install on CERTAIN hardware identification eMachines, and will fail to install on others as an anti-piracy feature."

Notwithstanding all the other ELEMENTS that have been introduced to the best of my observation this still remains.truenorthOk, so the emachine cd won't work, period.

The only question I have now is, if the computer can't find the drive it wants to read the cd, was that the EM cd or it just can't be changed? I WOULD say the latter on this machine.

I am not sure why it states both 32 and 512, and I guess it doesn't matter. I can check later if you like.I would try another cd (any will work, doesn't have to be an OS cd) to see if the computer recognizes the drive and plays/shows the contents of the cd. If so, then the issue was not with the drive itself.Quote from: jaslyne on August 25, 2012, 03:22:28 PM

Solve : How to install PCMCIA Data Card in Win 3.11??

Answer»

Hi!

I own notebook SONY VAIO PCG-F801-A.

I have in PCMCIA slot CF data card.

I tried to install any DOS/Win3x driver and never succesfull.

Can anybody help me how to install this PCMCIA card in Win3.11 or link to correct driver?

MANY many thanks for every help, reply or comments.

MiroGood morning MIRKOSOFT

I am finding no drivers for that model for windows 3.1
Now as far as the PCMCIA card who made it, what is the model number

Some info would be needed but you may not be able to install W3.1 on that laptop.

Is W3.1 is it on floppies or CD

Hope this helps you, Mike Hi!

I installed Win3.11 to my laptop by CD with copies of original Win3.11WFW CZ floppies.

As first I needed to use USB floppy disk, this was solved.

Now I need to solve ZIP & PCMCIA...

PCMCIA info which I have to specify is only Pretec PCMCIA CompactFlash Type II Adapter

Many thanks.

MiroGood morning MIRKOSOFT

The only drivers that I am able to find is from here http://www.pretec.com/technical-support/download hope this helps you

Mike My 1996 laptop with Win3.11 for Pen didn't require any driver when used with an old CF card & CF adapter. Other CF cards it just refused to see.I seriously doubt any PCMCIA card had drivers for Won 3.11...
The technology was 8 years apart...but Best of Luck.Quote from: patio on August 17, 2012, 03:38:56 PM

I seriously doubt any PCMCIA card had drivers for Won 3.11...
The technology was 8 years apart...but Best of Luck.
16-bit PC Card slots were in laptops when Win3.11 was available. Drivers were DOS. Never could get the NETWORK card to work but the CF card with PC card adapter worked under DOS & Windows. Since the laptop had no Floppy or CD, the PC Card/CF was the only way to load new programs. I retired the laptop last year. That being said i still doubt he'll find drivers for it...My point is: no drivers are required for what he has.
He won't find them because they don't exist.

Found this: "CompactFlash (CF) is a mass storage device FORMAT used in portable electronic devices. The format was first specified and produced by SanDisk in 1994...CF cards can be used directly in a PC Card slot with a plug adapter, used as an ATA (IDE) or PCMCIA storage device with a passive adapter..."3rd day in a row i learned something new....
According to the Spec sheet the device needs no drivers.

Well done CC.Still have this one sitting on my desk:

They are passive devices, no electronics in it. CF cards were designed to interface directly to the PC Card Slot, the adapter only remaps the PINS & form factor.

Do you remember the CF Micro Drive? Back in the day, if you wanted large capacity, that was the way.

I still have an 10 year old Kodak 2MP digcam that uses CF.

Within the next 10 years, it will all be flash, hard drives will be gone.Hi!

OK, if it is passive device, how to addd a drive LETTER in DOS/Win3.11?
e.g. by modifying AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS

Many many thanks!

Solve : Bad sectors on hard drive format?

Answer»

If I format my HARD drive will it REMOVE the bad SECTORS on the drive. OjasIf you do a full format (as opposed to a quick format) it will first run chkdsk /R and mark any bad sectors (they cannot be "fixed", only marked so the system knows they should not be used). This is a transparent operation and you will not know checkdisk is running, but the format will take longer. As Allan already said, they won't be removed. They can't be repaired.

But to add, if you are getting a large number of these (more than a few) it might be a good idea to replace the drive.Quote from: QUAXO on August 02, 2012, 10:35:44 PM

This is what I think too. When a hard disk is manufactured there will be a few defects; no disk is perfect. To pass quality control, enough good sectors to provide the advertised capacity must be there, and also a number of reserve sectors. As the disk is being used, the firmware monitors the disk state and if a bad sector develops, it is mapped out and a reserve sector mapped in its place. This happens invisibly as far as the OS and filesystem are concerned. Once all the reserves are used up, then the disk drive cannot mask them any longer and has to report them to the OS and you have to use chkdisk etc. So the disk has already used up 8 of its 9 lives. The list of remapped sectors is called the G-List, and when the G-List starts to fill up, it's time to buy a new disk. The S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic information system monitors this sort of data.

Solve : W98 cabs and winzip32.exe and re-install?

Answer»

I have an old computer of 512MB and want to reinstall the OS. The Cabs files and key are on the hard drive. When trying to open cabs 74 I get a message saying it can't find the winzip file. Someone on ANOTHER forum cloned his 98, but I don't know if it is SE or just what. COULD I use it to straighten it out and then go back and use the original CABS files to reinstall, or will it wipe out the original cab files? Thanks. If you can determine if you have the SE version installed you can do a non-destructive repair...which basically means all your apps and data are not touched...

To do so go to the Root folder of the existing HDD and re-name win.com to win.old...
Then boot to the Win98 CD and proceed with the install...

Best of Luck.Yes I had the SE installed.

What is the HDD and how do I boot the CD? Sorry, I'm not much help here.My cabs are under windows\options and a subfolder so there is no win.com. I could do a search for it.

I only have a 98 disc, does it have a repair only section? I would still like to keep the SE cabs on there so how would I do it? Thank you.Quote

Solve : downgrading to Windows 98?

the problem is I have already upgraded to XP so that is probably why it is running so SLOW. I did that a couple years ago actually. it has gotten worse as the days go by. how hard will it be for me to open the PCU and drop in more RAM? I have two slots, one which will hold another 126 and another that will hold 256. I ran CRUCIAL.com on it.

No WORRIES, just want to know what we're dealing with before we give advice.

Yeah, that system would really struggle to run XP. 128MB RAM is part of the problem. The processor is also a bit slow. You'd be much better off leaving 98 on it.
You'd want to get at least a total of 512MBbut that crucial site said I could only get 128 for one and 256 for the other

Solve : Urgent help: KB951847,KB958623?

Answer»

Hi,

Everytime I try to download these 2 updates I get a 800B0100 error. I already disbaled my firewall and Anti virus software. I tried to download these updates from the Microsoft site. Microsoft has even tried to help me but I still cant download these updates. I have been trying to download these updates (especially 958632).

I have Windows Vista. And I have Norton Internet SECURITY. Thanks in advance for your help.Hello

You may try this steps:

1. The solution, in a nutshell, is to disable your firewall. If you’re using McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, F-Secure Internet Security, Norton Internet Security or another Firewall vendor, see its respective support page for assistance in disabling it (temporarily). If you’re using the built-in Vista Firewall, keep reading.
Open the Control Panel and select Security.

2. Select Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
3. Select Off (not recommended), click APPLY and then OK.
4. Go back to the Windows Update screen, click the Try again button
6. The download(s) and installation should start. and this time successfully install. If a restart is required, make sure to re-enable your Firewall once your PC restarts.
7. Though this solution will work for most Vista Update errors see the Microsoft search results for the error 800B0100 if it doesn’t work for you

Link: http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-US&q=800B0100

However, if the issue persists, Please perform the steps provided below:

Step 1: Stopping the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and the Automatic Updates service....

Click Start/All Programs/Accessories. Right click 'Command Prompt' and select 'Run As Administrator'. Click 'Continue' on the UAC prompt.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits

Step 2: Renaming the Catroot2 folder...

Type the following commands, and then press Enter after each command.
net stop cryptsvc
ren %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Step 3: Renaming the "SoftwareDistribution" folder...

Type the following command, and then press Enter.
ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Step 4: Registering the files that are used by Windows Update and Microsoft Update...

At the command prompt, type the following commands, press ENTER after each command, and then click OK every time that you receive a VERIFICATION message:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltux.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuwebv.dll

Step 5: Starting the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, the Automatic Updates service, and the Event Log service....

At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start Eventlog
exit

Reboot the computer and try Windows Update again.

I hope it may help you.

No i didnt but i will.I'll wait for a few minutes before I go to bed.Quote

Do you think I will be able to move the pictures off the hard drive to a usb flash drive(in other words will the computer be able to recognize the flash drive in the pre environment)
If most of the fie SYSTEM is intact, you can put the HDD on an external power supply and USB adapter and read the data on a good PC running Windows 200, XP or Vista. Or anything the does USB and NFTS, which WOULD include some recent Live Linux CDs. Ubuntu works.Where could i find a external power supply and USB adapter for the hard drive?Would that be an enclosure?Maybe nobody wants to hear this.
Microsoft has left behind the old 'standard' for the MBR thing. Because it was not a real useful standard. Vista expects you to leave the boot sector information ALONE. Third party programs that try to do things with the MBR can really mess things up. Before USING any of the old favorite disk utilities on Vista, make sue of two or three things.
1. Make a real backup of the Vista system mad your data on separate media.
2. Know what you are doing.
3. Ask somebody else anyway.
( Try for at least two our of the three.)

You can use enclosure....~$20...cheaper than being killed by your friend Solved, I used the pre-environment provided by the oem restore disk to access the files system using notepad allowing me to move the photos to a flash drive.I then restored the OS. Thanks to all of CH and ESPECIALLY Broni for making my first experience with CH great.Good news

hi all, had a good search , but am going around in circles ,

d ban - nuked my old p3 750 NEC versa apitude,

lost my boot disk so went to nec site and down loaded there one WIN 98se

ran through the fdisk then formatted C now

with the bootdisk in when i start computer it

microsoft windows 98 startup menu

runs through process then says

A:/>

what do i type?

thanks - GREAT site could not have got this far without it though WELL out of depth,
You booted from a floppy disk?

If this...

Quote

lost my boot disk

...means you have lost the Windows 98 install CD then there is nothing that you can type that will reinstall Windows.
From there you need to log the CDROM drive...type D: and hit Enter.
Then at the D: prompt type setup and hit Enter.

NOTE: Some bootdisks make the CDROM R: by default so it would be R: Enter then setup Enter.
To find which drive it is if it's not D or R use the dir command for each letter of the alphabet starting with D:

Solve : Windows 98 Bookmarks?

Answer»

First off I hate this dinosaur but I can't convince the boss it is wayyyy past the time to upgrade.

I'm stuck with Windows 98 here at the office. Among the many things wrong, the latest is all the bookmarks have disappeared. I do not know if SOMEONE deleted them, the computer itself deleted them or they have just gone into hiding. I've tried rebooting several times - no help. Can anyone TELL me where they may be hiding and how to get them back?

What Browser ? ?Ok, now this is getting even more weird. I went to My Computer and checked to make SURE the show all hidden was checked and it was. Just for GRINS while I was there I clicked the Bookmarks tab and low and behold there they all were. Any idea why I can get to the bookmarks by the scenic tour and not from the browser window?? Solve : Win98SE - "Empty" Window?

Answer»

I have an ICON on my DESKTOP that opens a window on my desktop containing a couple of DUN icons. This is how I crank-up my dialup ISP.

"Sometimes" [1 out of 10-12 times] this window opens "empty", no icons. I just close & reopen the window and the icons are there on the second try.

Is this a "problem" I should do SOMETHING about ??

Solve : win 98se repair install & registry questions?

Answer»

Will reinstalling the OS create a new registry?

Do i have to re-format the hard drive in order to reinstall win98SE?

Most programs don't run 'cause the comp doesn't recognize that they are there. If i have to reinstall all my programs, wouldn't it be more efficient to re-format the drive (as opposed to deleting and reinstall programs on case-by-case basis)?

Can i reinstall 98SE over itself? Or do i have to delete the OLD one first? It's same version, my backup/install OS is on a partition of the hard drive.

Is there a way to repair/reinstall 98SE and keep the current device drivers?

REGARDS,
PoetYou can try to repair Win 98 by installing it over itself, but you need Windows CD.Does that mean burn what's on the partition to cd?

PoetNo. You have to have full version of Windows 98 CD.
I'm not sure, what you have on that partition, but I suspect, it's some kind of recovery partition, which will return the COMPUTER to its original state - all private data lost. No, my comp was custom built, the hard drive was partioned and a full working version of 98SE was put there in case the OS was damaged or needed to be reinstalled.Quote

full working version of 98SE was put there

Solve : 95 change to 98 se?

Answer»

older computer, did REFORMAT to 98SE.

can't get past DOS prompt: "Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g. , C:\WINDOWS COMMAND.COM)"

Took disks out, Restarted, see win 98 screen, then back to DOS & same request.

Tried various versions of that line. Always returns to same request...?? Official Windows CD or the Sharpie version ? ?store bought real thing.Hard drive could be bad.Has 2 HDs. Everything worked in 95, just before re-format.
Downloaded "boot98se.exe" & MADE new floppy.

Still asks "Comm. Interp." question.
When I enter a:etc, now tells me "...Config.sys file too large for memory..." Then goes back to "type the name of the Comm.Inter. ..."

Am trying unplugging 1 HD now...?? Perhaps when I reformated, left 1 drive with old stuff still on it?Quote

So you haven't installed Win98se, you're still booting off a floppy?

MS 98 window shows up (briefly) when I boot from C. then back to MSDOS.
Have been trying both, from c & from disk...

just tried disconnecting main HD & formating 2nd. Just showed "no operating system"...

Back to main nowHow old is this older computer?
older than dirt...
but in a strange twist, I pirated parts from ANOTHER, (ancient) system & got one working.

As USUAL, have LEARNED a lot. Possible that floppy was not reading, not sure.

"the secret to happiness is low expectations..." Got one working. Life is good.
Thanx for your input. I "hope" we don't need to talk about my gear again, but glad to know you are there.

Solve : Windows 98 SE?

Answer»

This is just a PROBLEM which has been annoying me for a long TIME, but I've had it again TODAY so might as well post it. Whenever I download a driver for some usb device with my windows98 se (which came with less drivers than my cellphone did it seems) it just never, ever, ever will install properly.

Take today.

I'm using a I/O Magic 24x10x32 Portable USB 2.0, which the windows 98 driver is found at http://www.toggle.com/lv/group/view/kl60049/Driver_I_O_Magic_24x10x32_Portable_USB_2.0.htm

I downloaded the driver, transferred it to the computer, ran the setup file, it said i had to restart.

I restarted.

At the dos prompt a couple of things came up to do with the setup, it continued loading windows, and then "Windows has found new hardware."
"Add new hardware wizard"!
"Windows cannot find a driver for USB TO IDE device."

*evils*

Am I doing something wrong, or do people post these useless drivers on the internet just for laughs? This is about the fourteenth device and driver that hasn't worked for me with my computer. It's driving me nuts.

Thanks for the replies,
Bonesthere is a generic USB storage drive available. Try here:

Hi
I had this problem with 98se and 2000.
If you download the driver file to a new folder in my documents and OPEN a folder there you can then open the file it should ask where do you want to save it to.save it the the file you will see it open and all drivers will be there.
when the found new hardware comes up tell it you will say where to look.browse the folders until you find the one you want say OK and it should find it
The system should then find the driver and install.

I think that all the new drivers are missing something that 98 and 2000

Solve : Win98SE Start-up BIOS message?

Answer»

For my education:

I recently happen to notice as the BIOS messages "flashed by" on start-up, the line.

"Primary IDE CHANNEL no 80 conductor cable installed"

This is TRUE my data cables to the hard DRIVES are the "old" gray 40 conductor version. BUT where did this line come from

Back when the Win98SE BIOS was written I don't THINK 80 conductor cables existed. This is no "big deal" I am just curious, has Microsoft been updating my BIOS all these years ??There is no such thing as a "Windows 98SE" BIOS. The BIOS in a computer is software and data contained on a flash memory chip in a socket on the motherboard. It is provided by the motherboard manufacturer and is specific to your motherboard model and has nothing whatsoever to do with the operating system which is loaded much later on in the boot process. Also it cannot be updated without your knowledge. If you are studying the messages which flash by on your boot up screen, look at the bottom left and you should see the BIOS date.

Clearly 80 conductor cables existed when your BIOS was written, as otherwise the BIOS writer would not have included that MESSAGE! In fact, 80 wire IDE cables were introduced with the ATA/ATAPI-4 Standard, in guess what year? 1998!

However it's nothing to do with Microsoft, as I explained above.

You could consider getting 80 wire cables, you might see some performance increase.

Solve : Windows 95 on a 20 GB hard drive??

Answer»

Can you install windows 95 on a computer with a 20 GB hard drive?Sure - see this for minimum requirements.

Good luck.I should have been more clear. I mean does Windows 95 support a hdd as big as 20 gbs? P.S. I'm on the web on a CELL phone. Is that not like asking: How long is a piece of string?

It shouldn't matter.

However, you may want to look at Markp62's POST (second post) here:
http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-95-98-me-nt/75709-win95-hard-drive-size.htmlIf i get windows 95 or 95a can you still use a 20 gb hd and not have acsess to more than 2 gb or would you not be able to use that hdd at all? Win95 and 95a have to be installed on a 2 GB (or smaller) partition. The rest of the drive can be accessed if you split the whole thing into 10 partitions of 2 GB each. I remember having to do this back in the day when I got my first 8 GB hard drive.

Aaaah, the memories . . . .Thanks. 3 more questions. 1. What is registering windows? 2. How do you do it? 3. Do you have to register windows 95?Registration is normally done over the Internet. Windows 95 is kinda pre-Internet, so you don't have to register it. But what is registration? From Microsoft.

Quote

Product activation is different from product registration because activation is required and registration is optional. If you want to register Windows XP by providing your name, e-mail address, and other contact information, you can ALSO choose to receive information about product updates and other special offers.

So registration is completely optional. Activation, on the other hand, is not for Windows XP and Vista. No need to worry about activation for Windows 95. (It didn't start until XP.)

So let me get this right. Registration is completley optional on all windows OS'es. Activation though, is required, and only even possible on Win XP and above. Correct?Win95; Win98; Win98SE; WinME : Keycode required from original CD package to install/Run properly.

Win2K; Win2KServer WinNT: Same as above activation/registration optional.

WinXPHome and Pro : Activation required...registration optional.

Vista : Same as above.

Solve : A lil help with windows 98se installation?

Answer»

hi, my uncle has an old windows 95 computer n he would like to upgrade it to win 98SE. he GOT a win 98se upgrade cd from someone. i tried installing with OS and without it. but the setup still asks for the same thing " insert disk 1 and then press ok." it doesnt say what disk. i read in some forum that i need windows 3.1 disks in order to get rid of that message. someone please help!!! And if you have those disks or a site for them please send the URL to : [email removed]
thank you in advance!I removed your email address to prevent SPAM, since spam bots come on this and many other sites, and look around for email addresses to spam.

(Even if you already get it, and it gets filtered correctly, you will just end up GETTING more, I know, I've been there)

Anyways, did this computer once have Windows 3.11 on it?
Most 3.11 computers are not capible of running Windows 98. Many 3.11 computers were also 16 bit, though Windows 3.0 supported 32 bit systems. Its like how, today, we have 64 bit systems, and we have a 64 bit version of nearly every OS, but, still, the majority of the world continues to run the 32 bit system...
Windows 95 is 32 bit only, so, that means that the computer is 32 bit. However, you should post your system requirements. Windows 98, compared to 95, is a resource hog, and will take up a lot more.

Heck, a computer that old can hardly do anything without crashing. You might almost consider a new computer, but, obviously, there is a reason you must still be using the old computer, and thus, we shall continue to troubleshoot the problem.

Also, Does the computer have a CD drive? Do you have the original Windows 95 floppy disks ("Insert Disk 1 and press OK" tells me that you originally installed Windows 95 with a floppy, not a CD)

this computer has windows 95 on it. i looked at the win 98se requirements and the computer fits the requirements. windows 95 was installed with a cd. please help!!!windows 3.1 is a 16-bit program, but 386 enhanced mode uses a select few 32-bit functions.

The last 16-bit computer in the x86 line was the 80286; and that was introduced in around 86, almost 4 or 5 years before windows 3.1/3.11.

Anyway, back to the problem at hand.

Since you've got an Upgrade installation of windows 98, it needs to verify that you have windows 95, (and so asks for disks..) However, If you also performed an upgrade install of windows 95, you might also need windows 3.1 disk 1, in addition to the windows 95 CD.The other thing that makes a CD installation ask for a floppy disk is a damaged CD.

Solve : Installing windows 98?

Answer»

I am trying to install windows 98. The installation starts and then it says "install diskette in drive B and press any key". There is no drive B. It does this during set-up and will not CONTINUE because it looks for DISK in drive B. In addition, I have tried setup a few times and it only completed them partially. Considering there have been a couple of other partial INSTALLATIONS, how do I format? I do the following prompt...format c: It then says incorrect paremeter/ BAD command. What should I do? Do I need to CHANGE the drive or?These problems are known to be connected with a damaged or dirty install CD. Try cleaning it. Even better try a different disk.

I did have to use my other computer to do this and it had me export so I am not sure if it was even off of the 98 disk.
It said to:Recovering Windows Product Key

To recover the Windows Product Key:

Start -> Run -> type regedit

This will open the Registry Editor. From there navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Click on the CurrentVersion folder, and on the RIGHT pane there will be a key that says ProductKey. There will be a 25 digit key (both numbers and letters), copy it down. If you still CANT find it, then:

Edit -> Find

Type ProductKey in the find box and click Find Next.

Windows will have to be installed before you can do so.

The CD-key is nort part of the CD. Therefore, it would not be stored on the CD it self.
