Hello, I'm having problems installing windows98se.it will copy all the FILES to the hard drive no problem, then after the first reboot i get the windows logo then after a few seconds i get a black screen with the error MESSAGE
Insufficient memory to initialize windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your config.sys and autoexec.bat files and restart your computer. it does exactly the same thing if i try to use safe mode aswell it just turns the computer off. If you don't understand some detail, check back here and somebody will help you. Another option would be to use a VM [virtual machine] to run Windows 98, then put the app. there.

Workarounds:

1) Use a virtual machine, as suggested before. The virtual machine runs Windows 98 and the program. VirtualBox or VMWare would be best to do this with, since they have USB support for your dongle. Virtual PC 2007 has no USB support.

2) Dual-boot. However, that makes it a pain in the rear for the end-user that wants to run the program as well as anything inside XP.

Long-term solution:

1) Look for a new version of the program. Dear god, man--nobody can purchase Windows 98 anymore, and your program is only compatible with an OS without support?

I would suggest Workaround #1 above as a stop-gap to buy you time to get your act together and get a new version of the program--something that will run not only in XP, but in Vista (32 AND 64-bit) as well!! Hmm, FoxPro Apps can be recompiled with a newer version if FoxPro; I believe this was a bug in the foxpro 5 and 6 runtime.

I have an HP Pavillion dv9500 with Windows Vista Ultimate, with Windows Media Center. It works fine. The TV stations I get have different numbering than the broadcast stations: 1051 STANDS for Channel 5 (CBS), 1121 stands for channel 12 (NBC), etc., Question: when February'09 comes and the broadcasters officially switch to digital will I be getting the channels my regular TV gets with the convertor-box I installed on it? -and why do the digital channels on my computer-TV differ from the the convertor-box ones, and why don't I get all the channels on the computer-TV that I get on the regular TV wit the convertor-box??? THX, cactusJohnAs far as Computer TV GOES...if you have a TV Tuner Card for your computer that is connected via Coax, then when the switch happens in 2009 you will need to add a digital to analog converter between the TV Tuner Card and your Cable Line -or- a splitter out of your digital box with the analog feed split between a physical TV and your Tuner Card, and what stinks about that is that that you can only capture or view the channel that the box is digitally translating so the many channels you have now will likely go down to simply channel 2, 3 or 4 and the digital box supplied by your cable company will be the only means by which to switch channels.

OR... if you are lucky your TV Tuner Card in your computer is digital ready in which all you would need is a splitter before the digital box...."Most of the low end ones are not digital and strictly analog"

As far as the channel offset I dont have any advice as to why it is offset like that. I am guessing that maybe there may be a FEATURE to customize your channel order maybe.

ok so i have been working on an old win 98 and trying to get it in working order and i was installing some HARDWARE and it said this file had and error ( the one used for add NEW hardware) so i found it on line and REINSTALLED it BUT now it doesn't work at all... would reinstalling windows 98 fix this i would really like to know.

Windows XP requires a 64MB RAM and Windows 98 has a 32MB RAM. I had a IBM 128MB RAM that I used to replace the 32MB RAM and started the computer. Then my computer would not start, so I REMOVED the 128MB RAM and reinserted the 32MB RAM and restarted. I rebooted with the Windows 98 Boot Disk and everything went up to "Rescue Recovery." The computer said "Press any key to start rescue.exe or press Ctrl C to go to DOS." I tried both and all I have is a blinking (-). Have I completely RUINED my computer? And are we talking a laptop or desktop?I agree, it sounds like you either installed the wrong memory, or too much for your motherboard. Putting the original RAM back in was a good decision. Now are you trying to do a clean install of windows 98, or are you just trying to boot it back up the way it was? A boot disk will give you the (-) because windows 98 uses dos, and that is a dos screen. Do you know your dos commands? Did you try to INPUT any commands? It is possible you overloaded the motherboard with the RAM, ESPECIALLY if it was the wrong kind.

The Gateway I have is a Millennium2000 an older 1 and the system i WANT to put in it is a Windows98SE, I have the startup disk for the Windows98SE, but I need a disk to take Millennium, out I think and I don't have that one, is there a way to do that with out that disk?If the following doesn't work, then your disc probably isn't bootable and/or not the OS itself.

Step-by-step:

1. Be sure you don't mind everything on the computer suddenly disappearing. Because it will.

2. Make sure you're fine with no. 1.

3. Same.

4. Place the cd in the drive while the computer is turned off. You may have to open it before you shut the computer down.

5. Turn on the computer, and if your BIOS is set correctly, and the cd is an actual install cd, you can follow the prompts to wiping the hard drive clean and installing 98SE.

Poof! W98 installed. No deinstaller disc NECESSARY for your previous OS.

P.S. I'd also make sure that either (1) you never want to go back to 2000, or (2) you have restore discs for the computer.

I have an OLD Win95 machine that got the Win98 upgrade in about 1999. I just got it back from my daughter. The file situation was a mess. I intend to this box strictly for recording WAV files from records and TAPES so I can burn them to CD's. I've already had good success with this, so I know it's going to work. Two days AGO I ran out of disk space, and since the registry was already a mess, in a moment of sheer brilliance I decided to format the HD and reinstall Win95, then upgrade it to 98 again. Well, I blew it! I formatted the HD from the Win98 boot FLOPPY. Now, when I try to RUN the Windows 95 "Setup" program from the CD I get a prompt that says, "Setup.exe must be run from Windows". Windows is not on the HD anymore. I now have to boot the system from a 98 boot floppy. After it boots I do have access to the CD.
What can I do to get Windows back on the machine? THANKS!

The first version of win95 supports only Fat16....... You're probably using Fat32...... If only I could remember how to fix it.
Windows 98 includes a utility to convert FAT16 partitions to FAT32 partitions. However, the Windows 98 utility is a one-way process. You will not be able to convert the FAT32 partitions back to FAT16 partitions. However, Partition Magic version 3.x can convert FAT32 to FAT16 and FAT16 to FAT32 partitions.

Once you convert your partition to FAT32, the only operating systems that will be able to read and to write to your FAT32 partitions are Windows 95 OSR2 and Windows 98.

There is some info and maybe some reason to why windows isn't working right.... I suggest attempting to get this "partition magic 3.x" program..... considering that may be a solution.....

...bought a computer with windows 95 on it and internet explorer 4.0. I wanted to update the explorer and all other updates needed. Is there a link in microsoft's website that will let me update all of this? And does anyone know if internet explorer 6.0 is compatible with windows 95?
Or will I have to use an earlier version than 6.0?...

I am beyond desparate! Im TRYING to 'repair' my father's computer from spyware *censored* and now it says there's an error with atmsys.drv and windows must be re installed. Of course it didnt come with any CDs, so it has to be done from the HD.

I have some notes from a previous re install on my husband's computer, but I want to make sure this is correct because I have so much written here, Im afraid there is smthg Im missing.

I Cloned the HARD drive to onother ONE as back up
and when I found out (windows me ) the was only restore folder on the hard drive I cloned to what is the problem with Norton GhostWell, I can't tell ya what's wrong with Norton Ghost, but I can tell you that I used to have Windows ME, and Windows ME is the MOST unreliable operating system that Microsoft has ever released. I would say to get the Windows XP upgrade disk and use XP instead. As for your ghost data, and to see how to get it all back, I would say to call or email your computer manufacturer. They will help you get your information back.

If not, it may have failed. Check to see if it is properly set in your BIOS and if all the cables/jumpers are still connected.

Dependes on how many PCs you want to network. You can USE Direct Cable Connection if you only want to network two PCs. If you want SOMETHING more sophisticated, you can always use ethern net connection.

All my .dat files are being opened with a Cstudio PROGRAM. The program has NEVER been installed or used on my pc. Checked Microsoft Site, the only thing even CLOSE was- win 3x regedit help.
Any suggestions? run a spyweeper/ trojan/worm program....if this still does it come back..

I am in a bind. I STUPIDLY downloaded Explorer 6 and while installing it there was a Windows error that REQUIRED a reboot. When rebooted I could only go to
Windows safe mode or dos prompt modes, but not normal windows...

I tried to use the config recovery program but from the safe mode it said it reverted to an earlier version but when rebooted the same problem occured.. and from dos prompt the config recovery program could not work.

The fact that I have to leave on a trip in three DAYS (Sunday) and need to get this RESOLVED before I leave..
and the fact that I work in Poland is not helping because no one seems to have the Windows 98 cd in the English version.

My referbed laptop did not come with a Windows cd just a preinstalled licenced version... so I am frantic.

I've tried to run disc defrag but whenever I try, it just stays on 0% complete, even after it's been running for more than 24 hours so I don't think my computer is really running disc defrag. I can't figure out what the problem is. Help, please?

~SarahCTry running it in safe modeHello Sarah, if you haven't use delindex.bat from www.burzurq.com now is the time to add it to your '98 bootdiskette AND put it on your HDD at C:\delindex.bat

You can then either run: C:\>delindex run , or: A:\>delindex run , and clear a lot of the old files that slow '98 down and become impossible to defrag such as the index.dat files.

You'll see the increase in the free-space on the drive before and after running delindex.

Now try defrag again. (You'll know that you can use the defrag.exe from ME which is a lot faster than the '98 defrag.exe.(?))

You can also use Diskeeper Lite which is free and lets you see the entire drive in one window, AND/OR you caninstall ScanDefrag which will defrag the drive at boottime. (After a re-boot and before loading Windows)

That is what I use on ME.

Another reason which sometimes occurs with '98 has to do with the drive cluster size.

This depends on your drive size and the size of any partitions you may have.

Some '98 INSTALLATIONS run the disk utilities better when the cluster size is 8192 bytes per allocation unit.

You can check this by running ScanDisk.

Some other junk file cleaners I use on ME &AMP; XP are EmpTemp which is great for storing cookies you want to keep & CCleaner.

I have a Gateway Windows ME machine. Several months ago, it started randomly shutting down on me. I didn't think anything of it at first but then it started doing it more and more, sometimes in the middle of imprtant papers or something. It's gotten to the point where it won't even stay up LONG enough for me to run a virus scan. I thought at first a fan might be going bad, CAUSING it to overheat and shut down. The fans seem to be working fine though. I believe there may be a virus, but I can't get the COMPUTER to stay loaded long enough to find out. How do you suggest approaching this issue. I'm not sure what kind of COMP this is, there is no name anywhere on it.reboot pc and chose safe mode* hit the ctrl key or f8.*...and chose start windows normally..does it still do it...? When I try to install the drivers for a new NETWORK CARD or modem, my Windows ME locks-up before the drivers are installed. When I re-boot the SYSTEM does not recognize the card. If I try to install the drivers my machine locks-up again.
Does anyone have any ideas?????

I'm trying to update my video card drivers and the installation program will not run. When I go to run the program I hear a bell and a nag SCREEN pops up telling me to turn off anti-virus with a yes to continue or no to stop the installation so I can turn off anti-virus.
Even with anti-virus turned off when I click yes, nothing happens. I have the same problem with two other programs. Two of them are drivers for my nvidia video card, and another is a photo editing installation program. They all have a nag screen and they all ring a bell.

They are definitely the right drivers for my card. If you can't do that for some reason download the Windows Millennium OEM image file from the link below to any computer's hard-drive, put the floppy in the A: drive and double-click the image file.

This will make a bootdiskette for you.

Go to www.burzurq.com and add delindex.bat to your bootdiskette. Move the write-protect tab across on the bootdiskette to prevent viruses being written to it. (Small plastic slider.)

With the bootdiskette in the A: drive re-boot your computer and allow the program to load, which it will do automatically. Choose Minimum Boot and allow the DOS prompt to load.

At the DOS prompt type: A:\>delindex run, and press Enter.

You will see a read-out of the before and after free-space on your drive. Now type:

A:\>scandisk /all /surface , and press Enter, and allow scandisk to perform a FULL thorough surface scan to look for drive errors. This is ESSENTIAL!

When this is completed type:

A:\>scanreg /restore , and press Enter.

Choose a date/time before things went wrong, if there is still one left. Highlight it and click OK, and Windows should automatically restore a good working registry.

When you can reduce the size of the System Restore file cache and run scandisk from the desktop and then run defrag.

If they won't run you can run them both from safe mode.

If your computer is compatible I would suggest that you purchase XP Home and do a CLEAN install and you will have a MUCH better experience when it comes to using Microsoft's latest Operating System.

I used ME for four years and had a LOT of trouble with it. So far I have not had a SINGLE BSOD and have never had to reboot to recover system resources.

You know when your in My Documents or any folder and you right click you get that little menu, around the bottom of the menu it says New and when you put your MOUSE on it another menu pops out saying Folder, Shortcut and anything else.

Well for some strange reason my New option has dissapeard from the list and now I cant make a new folder anymore.

I was directed to a site that said if I download something called MyBackupPC, it would work. All that did was cause a CD to be made from the zip disk, but when I tried to use the CD, the computer appeared to be trying to READ it as one large document, and I still can't get to my files.

My nephew claims I have to find a Windows 98 computer, restore my stuff onto that, then copy documents onto disks. I'm having trouble finding someone that has Windows 98 AND a zip drive, and trying to do it from that CD didn't work.

Last night I installed NORTON. Then my printer was giving me TROUBLES so I uninstalled and was GOING to reinstall it. After uninstalled it said to restart to change settings. When it reboots there is a message that comes up saying a fatal exception 06 has occurred at EFFF:0000C1A. Current Application will be terminated.
Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart or press key to terminate.

I have downloaded all of the MS updates for Win 98 and am using the latest IE 6.XXX.

When online, using a dial-up connection, and try to use the "REPLY" function in my email programs, which are Yahoo and Hotmail, a window pops up saying that there is a problem with "ddhelp" and when trying to CLOSE that window, another pops up stating that "there is a problem with IE and it will have to close" and then the MS error REPORTING window pops up stating that it is reporting the problem to MS.....Then I am disconnected from IE and have to restart my computer. ALSO, I have the Incredimail PROGRAM loaded as well and like it very MUCH, as it is the only one that "usually" works.

Any ideas for solving this problem and has anyone else experienced the same and cured it?

v8eyedocProbably IncrediMail is the culprit but as they offer no support it is impossible to tell without un-installing IncrediMail and seeing if that solves the problem.

Is your IncrediMail program fully updated?

If you want an alternative Browser and Email program that do work try using Mozilla's free Firefox Browser and Thunderbird Email programs.

While compiling/running a c++ PROGRAM in win2k i recieve a gpf code 001B:630DE3B1. This program does run correctly on win95.
Does anyone have any suggestions, i have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

Your path should look something LIKE this:

PATH=C:\PROGRA~1\WIN98RK;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND

You can add additional directories to the path if needed. It can be entered at the DOS prompt. You should either remove the path statement from autoexec or make it look like this.Thanks for the answer. I am trying to re-install WIN98,with the CD, after reformatting the hard drive. The installation goes well until it reaches the section TITLED "Setting up hardware and finalizing settings". After setting up hardware and plug and play, it requires a Restart. When it restarts I receive an error MESSAGE.

Do I have to go into the bios to use the disk. Depends on the computer if it has an option in the bios to boot from cd, if not you will need a floppy disk with cd support and then run setup from the CD. You can get the boot disk image from here

Question: Can anyone tell me the major differences between font SIZE from windows 3.1 and windows 2000. I translated dialog boxes from windows 3.1 coded in pascal to windows 2000 coded to C++ and the sizes are wrong.

Sure it's the font size that's wrong? I'd tend to blame the resolution. Back in the day, most PEOPLE would be getting 640x480 at best, whereas now 1024x768 is becoming the norm.

I recently installed Windows ME virtual machine in Windows 10 Pro version 2004 as the host operating system. I am RUNNING Vmware WORKSTATION Pro version 12.59. After INSTALLING Windows ME virtual machine, I downloaded Windows ME service pack version 1.05. Before installing service pack version 1.05, I checked the installation instructions. The installation instructions told me to install Internet Explorer 6 service pack 1 and disable system file protection prior to installation of service pack version 1.05.

I would like to know why I must disable Windows ME system file protection? If I leave system file protection enabled will it disable the Windows ME service pack version 1.05 installation? How do I disable Windows ME system file protection? ALSO, is there any way we can update Windows ME system file protection so that it won't disable the installed Windows ME service pack version 1.05 and REINSTALL the original Windows ME files before service pack version 1.05 was installed?

:-/When The windows 98 Computer is on for about 5 or 10 minutes, it all of a sudden turns into a all black screen with these red LINES going ACROSS the screen. Just installed a clean install of Windows 95 in a VIRTUAL machine via VirtualBox and it will not boot. The install always crashes after the Welcome Splash on a black screen that says "General protection Fault ERROR. Windows did not boot." I used all the default setting for the virtual machine INCLUDING 64 MB RAM and Intel Pentium processor EMULATION.

On right CLICKING a shortcut and choosing Find Target the action hangs. I have found no help so far on the MS Knowledge base.
