Solve : Windows 98 SE Startup Disk? |
Answer»

I am having the toughest time fixing my computer. I turned it on one day, and got this message:

The MSVCRT.dll file is linked to missing export NTDLL.dll: RtlGetNTVersionNumbers.

So, I looked around and found instructions on how to it: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;330314

I saw I needed a startup disk, which I don't have. So, I looked around, and found instructions on how to create one (and since I can't get into Windows, it has to be using the command prompt): http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;186300

I follow the directions. I get to the command prompt, plop i my floppy disk, and begin typing in the commands:

C:\>cd windows\command
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND>smartdrv.exe
Bad command or file name
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND>bootdisk a:
The EBD directory does not exist.
Change to the WINDOWS\COMMAND directory and try again.
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND>

(The stuff that comes up after I hit enter is in bold. During this, I have my Windows 98 SE CD in the CD-ROM drive)

I don't know what more I can do. I even tried re-installing Windows, but it wouldn't let me do that either. If it comes down to it, I can run the recovery CD that came with the computer, but that will result in loss of all my files on the computer (which is definately the last resort). Please help me! Thank you!load the boot floppy again a:\> cdwindows enter c:\> scanreg/restoreThe command.com file should be on the bootdisk, so you should not have to swap to the C:\ drive or the Windows directory.

Smartdrive.exe is in the C:\Windows folder.

What you need is the file MSVCRT.DLL from your Windows '98se CD to replace the bad one in the C:\Windows\System folder.

So you'll need to use the SFC command

Here is an example of what to do.

http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001011114021106

Or is it that you cannot get to the desktop?Yes, I can't believe I forgot to mention. After I get the error message, I hit close, and all that's on the screen is the remains of the error message, and a blank desktop image (no access to the icons or START menu). change the bios options ...boot from cdrom....load the install disk win will format your hard drive..and re-install win98se?SOMEHOW your reg is corupt?Well, I can easily format my hard drive and reinstall Windows with the recovery disk that came with my computer. I'm just trying to figure out a way that I can get my computer back to normal without LOOSING all the stuff on my hard drive. If you have access to another computer with Windows 98 loaded on it that uses an IDE hard drive, or you've got a friend who'll let you use theirs, you can take out your hard drive and hook it up to the other computer as a slave drive. Then just copy all the files you need over from the old drive. This same thing happened to me a few months ago and that was the only thing I could do.If you can copy the file(s) you need to your hard-drive C: and can get into safe mode by either holding down the Ctrl key, or by repeatedly tapping the F8 key whilst starting, then you can cut & paste them to the correct location.

If you have the space on your Hard-Drive there is a procedure to copy all of the '98 cabinet files to the HDD for easier access.

If you can get into safe mode then you should be able to use SFC (System File Checker)

Just type sfc in the Run window, and click OK. Look for the affected file and make the necessary repair.

| |

Solve : Clone WIN 98 hard drive? |
Answer»

Complete idiot when it comes to computers. I could use some simple instructions to clone my hard drive or any other suggestions to accomplish what I am trying to do.

I've got a WIN98 PC that is RUNNING software for our engraving machine that we run every day. The maker of the software stopped supporting this version long ago and is no longer providing support including supplying unlock codes for reinstallation if that becomes necessary. They're happy to sell me a $5000 upgrade so I could run the engraver on a WIN10 machine but that doesn't appeal to me.

I hear that a way around this problem WOULD be to clone the hard drive so if I have to reinstall the software, I could switch to the cloned hard drive without needing an unlock code.

I'm not clear if only the software can be cloned or if the whole drive has to be cloned. As far as I can tell from my research so far, cloning a hard drive would wipe out whatever was on the drive previously.

This PC is not connected to the internet and my theory is that this is why it has STAYED alive for so long. I have a CD/DVD drive but no floppy drive.

I have 2 hard drives in this PC and one is being used for a backup of the current drive. I see that there is an SSD available for WIN98 PCs now (that I assume plugs into the motherboard) so I would like to get to the point where the machine is run from the SSD drive, the backup is done to an SSD drive and the cloned hard drive resides on a 3rd SSD that would be stored out of the PC. This assume that both 2 active SSD's can be installed at the same time. Presumably, doing so would protect us forever from a CATASTROPHIC hard drive failure.

Can anyone give me recommendations - including software required - to do this?

I would need instructions that are for the average dum-dum, btw.
First we need to know how large the present hard drive, is to get this information in windows explorer, right mouse click on the c drive and select properties it is likely about 40 MB.

The easiest way would be to get a tech with a computer which supports IDE drives to make some self booting recovery CD's. I use an older version of Paragon disk manger like version 8 to achieve this.

There is the option of using compact flash cards as a replacement for ide drives. Remember to get 2 GB compact cards as larger ones are sometimes problematic with windows 98 .
Here is a utube video of installing one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1_40O4sKpc

With reliable older computers GETTING rare now would be a good time to source a spare, get it setup and tested working with the engraver.

| |

Solve : Windows 95 hanging at an Error upon clean install? |
Answer»

Greetings!

I am struggling to install Windows 95 on an older PC running a 386. I get the following error after getting into setup:

"ERROR SU0410

Cannot open C:\WININST0.400\override.inf. The file may be missing or damaged or there may not be enough memory to continue. Free some memory or increase your swap file size, and then try running Setup again. "

PC had a copy of freedos when i received it and it refused to boot that. i fdisked the drive formatted it, booted from win95 floppy and the CD rom driver booted and went into the setup. TOOK over 30 minutes to select which directory i install windows on and then that error.

I attempted to format the 1200mb Drive but Fdisk in Windows 95 only wants to see it as a 500mb drive and i am unsure why. Bios limitation?

Specs are

386 CPU
ISA-386U3 motherboard
4mb ram
floppy, CD ROM
Trident GPU.

Thank you in advance. If able to locate 8MB RAM for it it will be better. I have run 95 on 4MB RAM but its crippled at 4MB. There was a limit to 512MB HDD but even a 1.2GB drive only with 512MB allocation should be plenty as I had 95 running on a 300MB drive and still had plenty of free space. If you get it to run on 4MB of RAM there will be excessive swapping to compensate for low RAM. Additionally hopefully this 386 is a DX and not a SX as SX's are low end and struggle with 95 while DX processors handle it far better.

Lag in selecting directory to install to could be a HDD health issue or because SX processor and low RAM

Is this a real legal copy of 95 being installed off original CD or large stack of floppies, or an altered image that you installed from off the web?As Dave said it is likely a hard drive issue or the drive is not correctly setup in the Bios. It is likely a type 47 which you will need to get the correct heads, cylinders, sectors to put into the bios.

A PROGRAM to help get the parameters is MHDD also to test the drive it is available from here https://hddguru.com/software/2005.10.02-MHDD/

The parameters should also be on the drive Label or if you google the drive model it will be in the spec sheet.

The bios would not located the drive automatically. I did not selected type 47 but i typed in the heads, cyl, sectors and it figured out the size itself.

I appreciate the link as i have been using a old Core 2 Quad Machine to test the drive and such with it. Quote from: DaveLembke on July 22, 2021, 09:01:48 AM

If able to locate 8MB RAM for it it will be better. I have run 95 on 4MB RAM but its crippled at 4MB. So 4mb will have to be for now. the CPU appears to be a 386-DX40 so thats at least that.

I will check the HDD using another machine but to my recollection everything was fine.

As for installation media. ALL original. Im using an original microsoft boot floppy and an OEM windows 95 CD with my booklet and serial ready. Strange in that the file has an error at clean install. Is the installation CD free of scratches? Maybe a scratch on the disc in the location that that file resides and so a corrupt version of it is being placed onto the HDD upon install.... Looked at google to see what the override.inf is and no helpful info to suggest its purpose.

Cool that its a DX 40Mhz. One screaming 386 back in the day as most were 16Mhz to 33Mhz and it can get the memory in a single fetch vs 2 fetches that the SX required.DaveLembke,

Yeah i suppose i lucked out it being a better 386 then the others haha. From what i can see the CD is NICE and clean. You did give me an idea though and that is to try a different DISK drive, perhaps this ones not the best of SHAPE. I will try a different disk drive, ensure the CD is clean and give it another go.

I will report back. Thanks for the help. override.inf is in \Win95\precopy2.cab. The contents of the two cabs get copied as part of the setup bootstrap.

You could confirm the contents of the cabinet file itself. It can be opened with a few utilities. Depending on where your "OEM" CD is from it's possible there have been changes to the installation media.
Late reply, but i wanted to give an update.

I ended up upgrading the ram to 8mb and it got PAST that error. The system took over 5 hours to install win95 only for me to realize after checking CPU-z that the Turbo button was invetered and when off, it was running at 27mhz and when on, it was running at 40mhz.

Problem solved. Thank you everyone for your input. Awesome that you got it all figured out and surprised 5 hours for the install. Wonders if the CD-ROM drive is a single-speed only drive with a slow read rate or borderline to where its seeking over and over to read a section but doesnt get to the fail condition to bail out. Maybe the CD ROM was making a optical lens track adjustment noise over and over again through the install.

Longest install of Windows 95 for me was like 2 hours on a Everex Step 20 Mhz 386. For yours to take 5 hours at a faster clock 386 CPU makes me wonder if the CD ROM might not be the healthiest and so it was slow to get the info built to hard drive.

But anyways you got it onto the C: drive and should run ok at 8MB with some minor lag. Windows 95 really ran better on a 486 DX 33Mhz or faster with 32MB RAM.

| |

Solve : Windows 98 - Files run at Startup? |
Answer»

I recently got my old computer back up and running and I removed a number of things I will no longer be needing. I used to get a message at startup that the system was unable to find a particular file (likely to do with some Internet files that I have removed as it will never again be connected), before I got around to fixing this problem the easy way a friend of mine accidentally clicked 'Yes' on the box. This means that now it is running a new file and I do not know it's exact name. This also happens to be an unistall program which luckily I can say 'No' to at startup. What I would need is a walkthrough for Windows 98 (regedit.exe / ms config) to the files that are automatically run when Windows starts up, I am confident I will be able to find and remove this unwanted distraction as long as I see the list of files, however I do not have the skill required to find this list of files on this system.

I am running Windows 98 (not SE) with no internet access. Windows is now trying to run 2 files at startup, it cannot find gator.exe

That one should be simple enough to remove...

Windows 95 and 98 can't be accessed LIKE XP/Vista in Windows where you simply see a list of files run at start up?Quote from: Koivu on May 23, 2012, 03:51:40 AM
Ok, how do I get into the registry?

Using the registry editor. Start->Run, regedit.

Quote
Windows 95 and 98 can't be accessed like XP/Vista in Windows where you simply see a list of files run at start up?

you can use msconfig. But changing options there puts the system in a "selective startup mode". I'm pretty sure that's only a MSConfig term though.

| |

Solve : PCI Network Controller help (win98)? |
Answer»

I have PCI Network Controller listed under "reserved device" in the device manager that is causing a resource conflict (CODE 15). The system can't find any drivers for it and it just reinstalls if I try to remove it and reboot. Windows troubleshooter suggests it's a plug n play device because it has a "manual configuration" option.

Is plug n play the same as hardware that requires usb access? If so, I only have one usb port being used (a dsl modem) and that says it's working fine. There's nothing showing in the conflicted device list on the resource tab, so I have no idea what the conflict is. The only thing I have to go on is the manufacturer is Intel. I haven't added any new hardware to this machine. Any ideas how this can be fixed? Having run some software I found out it has a platinix motherboard (I'm not sure if that helps any). It ALSO said it has a sound blaster sound card and according to the article in the link you provided, they can cause conflicts. I checked the sound and vid cards in device manager and they seem to be working fine though. I was just trying to install some newer usb drivers and the instructions said I needed to remove any unknown devices before I install them for it to work right.Someone suggested there's a way to locate the "hex string" in the registry, then use the string to ID the PCI adapter on a web site. They didn't say what site provided that service though. Does anyone know of such a site? Also, if that's possible can someone tell me the directory path in the registry for PCI adapters? Why not just pull the PCI card and ID it that way ? ?

WORST case scenario a brand new one will only cost you 10 or 15 Bucks if you can't find drivers...If I knew what it looked like and how to remove it and add a new one (if needed) I'd definitely do that. Solve : Bootable 98 Floppy logging onto server with a batch file? |
Answer»

I am currently a student and we are working with automated installations of XP using a bootable 98 Floppy, I have my installation running correctly but I was hoping to polish my batch file jobs a little. One of the only tasks I can't seem to overcome happens to be logging into our server (NetWare, I believe). Once logged in the server launches a splash window congratulating me on logging in asking for any key to be pressed, which in turn kills the remainder of the batch file. I've been trying to download a small NIC driver from the network. My master batch file runs three smaller tasks, NET.BAT (runs all commands to INITIALIZE my NIC card), DRIVER.BAT (navigates the server and copies the driver to my hard drive), and the NETU.BAT (disconnects my system from the network). I'm hoping to find a way to respond to the request to "Press any key to continue" and have my DOWNLOAD.BAT finish it's job...

Thanks in advance for even reading this

DOWNLOAD.BAT
Code: [Select]@echo off
net.bat
driver.bat
a:
netu.bat

NET.BAT
Code: [Select]@echo off
lsl
ipxodi
dlk530
vlm
f:
login USER/SERVER
g:
Stops at "login USER/STUDENT The script logs in, the confirmation is where the script loses it.

DRIVER.BAT
Code: [Select]@echo off
g:
cd drivers\nic\dlink
copy *.* c:

NETU.BAT
Code: [Select]@echo off
vlm /u
dlk530 /u
ipxodi /u
lsl /u
Quote

Once logged in the server launches a splash window congratulating me on logging in asking for any key to be pressed, which in turn kills the remainder of the batch file.

The problem is that DOS is normally single threaded, so the splash screen exits you from your batch routine, and exiting it you might just end up at the command prompt without the remainder of the lines to be executed in the batch triggering. Only way to make this work I think is by creating a TSR service that controls what is launched and when. But the TSR wouldnt be in batch, it would be like C or C++ or another DOS friendly language etc. You would have your TSR load into memory and run thru the batched like routine, and then the TSR can end when completed.

It would be neat if you could logon, but kill that splash screen from taking control. I am not familiar with NetWare, but is there a silent mode option to sort of RUNAS without the splash screen. That would be easier than trying to make your own TSR. The advantage of a TSR is that it Terminates and Stays Resident in memory, so when the splash screen is exited, it can pick up where it left off.Quote from: DaveLembke on September 16, 2011, 06:49:39 PM
The problem is that DOS is normally single threaded, so the splash screen exits you from your batch routine, and exiting it you might just end up at the command prompt without the remainder of the lines to be executed in the batch triggering.

This is not the problem. I of COURSE mean no offense. I will get to the real problem in a moment. The problem, from where I am standing, has nothing to do with a login splash "eating keystrokes" or an issue with "threading" (I'm not really sure what you mean, tbh, if it was single-threaded one would expect tasks to execute synchronously).

Quote
Only way to make this work I think is by creating a TSR service that controls what is launched and when. But the TSR wouldnt be in batch, it would be like C or C++ or another DOS friendly language etc. You would have your TSR load into memory and run thru the batched like routine, and then the TSR can end when completed.

Another solution might be to use CALL to INVOKE the batch files from DOWNLOAD.BAT, that way DOWNLOAD.BAT doesn't end when NET.BAT does.

Without the CALL keyword, calling a batch file from a running batch file does what is effectively known as "chaining". The first batch file is basically discarded and control is completely given to the new batch file. There is no psuedo stack frame- control does not return to the first batch file.

using "CALL" however MEANS that the batch file will run, and then control will return to the next command in the batch file that used CALL. The way those batches are written now, executing DOWNLOAD.BAT performs none of the tasks in driver.bat or netu.bat because control is passed over to net.bat. and when that finishes executing it goes BACK to the command prompt. To be honest I had them all in a single batch file to start and then started tinkering once I ran into this issue. I do also need to admit I never even thought about the batch calling a batch, oops! I really appreciate the replies, I will certainly give it a try as soon as I can. Right now, I'm fresh out of work and I'm ready to crash. I'll be back in a couple of days with an update on my progress. Thanks again! Quote
This is not the problem. I of course mean no offense.
Hey BC no offense taken! Windows 95 must be first physical partition on the disk and conform to a limit of 2 GB. It may not be possible to put Windows XP on the same drive. Solve : old dell (win98) with baby pics won't boot and i don't have recovery disk...? |
Answer»

my apologies in advance if i'm posting in wrong forum, just let me know, and i'll repost/delete (been a year or two since i used this website, and y'all were helpful then, so i'm grateful). also, i'll try to be brief with the background info....

back in the day (oh, maybe a dozen or so years ago), bought the 1st family PC. Dell Dimension 4100 running Windows ME. Took care of it best i could (ad-aware, zonealarm, norton anti-virus, etc). Served the family good for probably 5 or 6 years, before time started taking it's toll, and registry slowly became gummed up w/crap. my preventive maintenance/repair skills were limited to basic, do-it-yourself type STUFF; i was scared of messing w/registry, ini files, or reloading windows, etc., because i didn't want to 'blow it up' so to speak, and cause irreparable damage.

well, eventually got to point where it wouldn't start, and so enter next door neighbor, Eddie....

Eddie was a PC geek (also a meth head i later learned, but i digress...), but was a good soul, and OFFERED to help. I was grateful. he fixed the startup problems, then i was able to get all important info/pics out of PC and put on disk. At that point, at his suggestion, he wiped entire PC clean, and reloaded Windows. Of course, help from a computer nerd meant that I needed to partition my drive (which it wasn't before), get rid of windows ME for a copy of Windows 98 (on one side of partition if memory serves me correctly), Windows XP Professional, i think (on other side of partition for the wife to logon), Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird (because no self proclaimed hacker geek would be caught dead using IE or Outlook, I suppose), and other changes.

I was grateful, because everything worked fine (and faster), and eventually learned to love some of the improvements (the Mozilla stuff fer sure). Family PC worked fine for the next 3 or 4 years. During which time Eddie went to prison for drugs. So no more next door neighbor resource.

Ultimately, at the end of that time (around 2005 or 2006), one side of the partition started running out of space, and PC really started bogging down. Until the one day it wouldn't boot properly at all. Being that it was just getting old, and figuring the money i would spend on fixing it could probably be better used replacing it, i did just that, and put it in a box, knowing that i would ultimately need to fix it, in order to get the baby pics out of it.

Enter the wife....

well, 5 years later, wife is PISSED. she wants the baby and toddler pics NOW. no more waiting. So i fire up this pc that's been in a box for half a dozen years, and FINALLY get it to come to life, and get it to partially boot, but it won't load windows. it says config/sys32/etc. is missing or corrupt. please input setup disk, and hit "r" option. well, here's the punchline:
I DON'T HAVE THE *censored* STARTUP DISKS, BECAUSE EDDIE NEVER GAVE ME A COPY OF THEM, AND I DIDN'T THINK TO ASK HIM AT THE TIME.
best i can tell, is i have Windows 98. i've tried getting it to go into safe mode, but was only able to get there once. i've tried my original Dell WindowsME disks, but no luck. Obviously, i can't just start over, because i need the info off of the hard drive, and although i can see the directories in DOS, i couldn't tell you for the life of me which pics were in which folders, etc. *censored*, i'm not even sure which side of the partition they're on, so i don't even think reloading windows on one side of the partition or the other would work for me.

with all of that being said, i don't think the PC is in that bad of shape. i've got a disk that i got from Eddie back in the day called "techie tools", in which I've been able to see some information about my machine, and basically, i think everything is there and functional, apart from windows starting up.

Can somebody offer me some advice?

Thanks for any/all help.

And I promise all future posts won't be nowhere near this long....
Slave Drive Tutorial

For hooking the drive up to a WORKING desktop to retrieve data...

The drive has to be in working condition but doesn't have to be able to load Windows...

Best of Luck.thanks for the info....i'll try this as a last resort (afraid of goobering up my drive permanently) if i can't get my box to fire up and work any other way....

on a sidebar: talk about COMPLETE FREAKS OR MIRACLES.....
earlier today i got my hands on a win98SE disk UNOPENED in pristine condition, for my exact machine (a dell dimension 4100). i was rummaging around desk drawers in an office upstairs near our servers, looking for an old floppy that i could overwrite and use to download & make a boot disk to try later today, when i stumbled upon the disk. i wouldn't believe it if it didn't actually happen. and to put this in context, it's not like we're a big company or corporation - we MAYBE have 10 pc's at work and a server. so it's not like i was rummaging around that warehouse in indiana jones or anything like that. anyways....

so i'm going to give that a try first....

again thanks for the help.....

but i do have another item i could use help on....i'll make a new post.....I grow tired of waiting...anticipation grows thin...did the disk work? Did you recover the baby pics? Did Eddie get parole?.....

| |

I have seen this driver issue before. Win98SE is, in many respects, quite a bit different from Win98, 1st edition. Thanks for your response.

On the Windows98 PC: after removal of the printer drivers, the printer drivers are reinstalled. The installation requires the original Win98 CD-ROM to be placed to install the win98 (first edition) drivers.

The printer emulates the Epson LQ-2550. When usining the correct LQ-2550 drivers of win98 (first edition) the problem is the same.

I did not install the printer drivers from win98SE on the windows 98 (first edition) PC because of possible incompatibilities.

---

I could install an additional printer that writes text (ASCII) to a txt file.
If this file can be read by typing - type "fname.txt" in dosbox it must be simply possible to get the file somewhere of somehow on paper.

Another approach is a win98 (first edition) upgrade to win98SE. In that case the win98 configuration is the same as on the old laptop with win98SE I used to isolate the problem.

The accounting program is not available as backup, the accounting data is OK and can be backed up. The risk is that with an upgrade the accounting program will fail. In that case the accounting program cannot be used anymore.

The simplest solution is using another accounting program, which are even available free of charge. It will take a long learning curve for the person doing the accounting all those years.

For the time being, I will look for a solution and tips / advise / reactions on this problem are appreciated.

W

Try the Win98SE drivers; can't hurt anything.The Win98SE ML380 driver doesn't work either.

Is it possible that code page defined in windows98 (FE) xxx.ini conflict with code page definition in config.sys (DOS) ?
At the moment I am not on location to check it out.

The files used by the accounting program are all of the type (IDX) and (DAT).
The DAT files are readable with the windows98 editors, the control characters for make-up work just as in standard txt files.
IDX may be the index files related to the DAT file and providing the links to the other files and associated data fields/values.

I WONDER what the format of the IDX files is. Solve : revive old laptop TOSHIBA Portege 7010CT and windows 98? |

After shuting down PC< slap it 2 times, then turn it ON it booted immediately in Win98.

I cant explain otherwise, and i bet that making a bootdisk would not have helped as the cd drive seems to install on its own even after format.

I think there`s a loose cable somewhere , anyway russian method ftw.

| |

It's one of those "only help me by doing what I say!" questions. I've seen it time and time again, and this forum is HARDLY the only one; people challenging the help they receive because of some mistaken superiority because they have a certificate or something. It's not like you got a phd in Computer Science, and even if you had- why does it make a difference? Clearly it didn't help you solve the original problem anyway so why does it make you more qualified to assert that provided solutions are wrong?

"I'm a newly graduated IT Tech I know what I'm doing" Clearly, at least in this particular case, you do not, that's why you posted here to begin with. If you knew what you were doing you wouldn't be asking what you should be doing. Same for me. If I post a question, it's because I either don't know what I'm doing or am unsure what I'm doing. I wouldn't be about to think that despite my years of working with COMPUTERS not being any help to solve whatever issue I was facing that it is still applicable to tell people that they aren't helping and to try to direct some sort of "correct answer" as if I already knew the answer. Of course I could determine wether somebody is spouting nonsense, but there is none of that here and yet you are calling people out for doing so, it would seem.

In any case, I had a interestingly similar problem some years ago (DOS 6, doubt they cover that in "IT Tech school" either); It was related to a hard drive and trying to get it visible; since there was no fancy schmancy auto-detected back in this days, I had to guess and keep booting to a floppy and trying to view the contents of the drive. At some point I chose a geometry that was Close (but not the same) so everything appeared corrupted; directory and file names with smiley faces and high-ASCII symbols, etc. I ended up reformatting, and then subsequently had to start over by choosing the appropriate HD Type later on.

Not that that really helps. The filesystem is corrupted, that's pretty much all that can be said. Unless you've had to deal with manual selection of drive types it's probably pointing to a failure/impending failure. Wether the data on a drive is important or not doesn't make it's chance of recovery any greater, unfortunately. Before formatting that drive you could try Recuva, but it is probably too late.

P.S I believe Patio suggests slaving the drive because using it in a USB enclosure adds an ADDITIONAL layer of indirection (the ATA to USB circuitry) usually that circuitry is not very fault-tolerant.
Quote from: Salmon Trout on February 14, 2011, 03:48:25 PM
...and I thought I was an ill-mannered lout!

I don't think this was an "either / or" situation

Just joshin' ST - actually you've been quite the gentleman lately.Quote from: Allan on February 14, 2011, 10:22:32 AM
Please stop posting nonsense. Solve : Font problem in help system and other programs? |
Answer»

So here's what I got:

I get the same font in Adobe Type Manager:

I can MAKE that font change by deleting the current font it is using. It may then use something better, or it might be worse. Any ideas how I can fix this?I solved the problem!

Using the clever utility, HwndSpy, I was able to DETERMINE that all of the instances where the font was not corresponding to what was expected (in this case, the default Windows font of MS Sans Serif), the font that was being used by the dialog was listed as "MS Shell DLG". I searched the Internet and determined that Windows 98, while it seems to be advertized as using the registry to define MS Shell Dlg (as everything NT and later do) ACTUALLY sets the value for this in the win.ini file! So I added the line

Code: [Select]
[FontSubstitutes]
MS Shell Dlg=MS Sans Serif

and everthing is fixed!
