As Allan says, you could run a disk diagnostic; but if you don't have any important data on the machine, it's not something you should be terribly concerned about. (In fact, you're question seems aimed at making it ignore it; you can do so by disabling S.M.A.R.T in the BIOS, sometimes labeled as "disk monitoring" or something similar).

Quote
I decided to bring it in and see if I could get some help with this thing before it failed. If it is, it's been working this way with the above message for quite a while.
S.M.A.R.T is designed to be preventative; it's tolerances are set rather low, and really if you get a S.M.A.R.T error of some description, all you really know is that the drive will fail eventually, which is pretty much a given with any drive. (That's why a hard drive should ideally never have the only copy of something, because that will exponentially raise the chances you'll goof up and somehow mess up the drive or that it will fail, it's a known law of physics ).

Quote
My (2nd concern) is with the USB's. It lights up and attempts to run but that's about it.

Windows 98SE had very rudimentary support for flash drives; specifically, unlike windows 2000 and XP (and I think ME, not sure) it didn't have a "class" driver for Mass storage; a "class" driver can basically work with any device that identifies itself as that class of device; for example, USB joysticks, keyboards, and mice are all identified as HID class devices, and use the same driver.

Thankfully, there are ways of adding support for it. try the drivers listed here, they work great on my 440CDX (~1996 or so).

BIOS support for USB a few years ago was relatively basic; usually you were lucky if you could even use a USB keyboard before the OS booted. There was no provision for booting from the drives, for example, and because the various device classes weren't really all that well defined the motherboard/BIOS manufacturers didn't bother with any sort of Bus enumeration (actually, Windows 95 was essentially the first PC Operating System that was widely used that supported that at all) Basically, this just means that you'll be getting a far slower speed (the ports are definitely USB 1.1) and you won't be booting from any flash drives on that computer, either. It works a treat for transferring files... especially when your CD-ROM drive refuses to work like the one on my ancient laptop

.Quote from: Allan on December 15, 2010, 05:35:32 AM
Regarding the first problem, you need to run a diagnostic on the HD (btw, a: is not a hard drive - it's your floppy). Much appreciated. overthehillUpdate on my two concerns ;

(1st concern) was the message that I received on start up.
Because I couldn't find anything in the BIOS that resembled "disk monitoring" what I ended up doing was disabling "Report Keyboard Errors" . (Ist concern) remedied.

(2nd concern) Unable to use USB's. Well I followed BC_Programmers suggestion on this as well. I installed the drivers that he suggested and now they work,(well sort of). For whatever REASON my 8GB Flash Drive works perfectly. My Microsoft Joy Stick (which I haven't used in years, but that's another story) works fine too. But,I get no response from a 4GB Flash Drive and also nothing from my External Drive.

All in all though, that's satisfactory. Not having to put up with that annoying message at start up is great . And, with all of the other storage devices working and now with the ability to use the 8GB Drive, this is all I really require anyway from this "Old Dell".

Thanks to all. Much appreciated. overthehill

Solve : Copying email source code?

Answer»

I use Outlook Express 6 as my email client. But to document what has been tweaked, I should ideally be able to copy the source code UNCHANGED-by-the-copy-process into e.g. WORD or a Rich-Text-Format editor. Solve : insufficient memory in Windows 98?

Answer»

To all of you kind and helpful types who tried to help me get past a really bad Win98 install ...patio, willyW, ianbell, Broni, Sid, Daniel1212, quaxo... Thanks.
I really appreciate all of you.
Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to admit it when you're licked. I'm licked. A couple of times I got so frustrated trying to get WIN98 to behave that I started to smack the COMPUTER around. How pointless is that?
WENT out and got a bootable XP CD and had the little sucker humming like a top on the first try. Even got it to work with my full 2 gigs of RAM. All the drivers for my graphics card and motherboard are loaded up and work just as they're supposed to.
Thanks again, folks. Good to hear you are up and running...stop by anytime !I just wanted to thank you people for all your wealth of information. I was stumped and I had the same error message for insufficient memory after I loaded 98. I just took out 1 stick of memory and it ran fine. I had 2 Gig dropped to 1.

Thanx,

Cindy TessierThat's certainly good news and Welcome to CH ! !Quote from: Broni on January 13, 2008, 08:52:08 PM

I asked, because...
That's the error, when you have 1GB, or more RAM installed on Windows 98: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/184447
Of course, it can be done only by Micro$oft, to give you an error about Insufficient memory, while actually, you have too much of it...LOL

I had the Windows 98 startup problem with 2 GB of ram and the advice in the link above solved it for me, i.e., adding "MaxPhysPage=30000" to the [386Enh] section of system.ini. (I had previously tried removing half the ram, but then the machine wouldn't even boot the BIOS for some reason.)

Unfortunately I still had the problem of not being able to open a DOS window, so I had to add a MaxFileCache entry in the [VCache] section of system.ini, as discussed at this link which was also posted EARLIER in the thread: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253912. I used a value of 262144. (I couldn't use 524288 because that caused a new startup problem.)

A MinFileCache entry turned out not to be necessary, but I did have to remove the fixed paging file size I was previously using for virtual memory, and let Windows manage that on its own. That, in combination with the MaxFileCache entry did the trick for the DOS windows.

So now I can run my legacy games again! My Computer Mainboard Gigabyte G41, CPU Core Due 3.0, RAM 2GB, I install Win98SE but I see error Quit one or more memory-resident...I search error throught google and I try follow guide some forum but not ok! I used the 2004 version because it runs under Windows XP, but later versions are available too. There are a number of legacy games that I was able to get running this way, with a couple of exceptions.

Here is an article that has a table showing compatiblility of various versions with various operating systems, and links for where to download them:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Virtual_PC

I found this set of instructions helpful:

http://www.metzomagic.com/showArticle.php?fileName=/int/help/VirtualPC2007FAQ.html&articleType=Steves+XP+Games+Corner&title=metzomagic.com+Virtual+PC+2007+FAQ

I installed both Windows 95 and 98 using those instructions, but with 95 it was also necessary to apply the second tip from this blog:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2005/02/15/372846.aspx

If you get a bootable floppy from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm the WinME OEM is good for Win98. Boot it up with the floppy disk installed then run Format C:. If it doesn't boot from the floppy then you need to set the boot sequence in the CMOS/BIOS. Then you can set the boot sequence to the CD Rom and boot with the Win98 CD and install. Here's the specs:

WIN98SE
ASUS A7S333 MB (M7A520 audio option board?)
AMD 1800+ CPU
Nvidia Ge Force4 MX440 Video Card
Generic sound card (LK-26611)
768MB RAM
40GB HD (SEAGATE)

The problem is that after the drivers for the sound card were installed, a PCI card, ESS Maestro 3 PCI off the driver disk, none of the previously installed games will play.

Example: the ORIGINAL Sims was installed prior to the sound driver update and it worked fine including all the expansion packs. I had to restart manually to get the PC out of that one.

I thought maybe this was just the game so I un-installed all of them then reinstalled the original disk, same problem.

This also happens with the classic Red Alert 2 and the expansion PACK Yuri's Revenge.

It could be the sound card but that seems a bit of a stretch.

The sound card is just a generic PCI card with the label LK-26611 Type F DMA support, line in, line out jacks with a 15-pin standard game midi port.

All these games worked prior to the driver installation.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

But I accidentally tore the cable attached to it after attempting to disconnect it so I could get to the CD-ROM drive cable. So much for that.

This is exactly the kind of computer that is perfect for experimenting with EComStation 2.0 or even OS/2 Warp4!

First of all, you gotta get that floppy drive cable replaced. I assume you mean not the ribbon cable and not a standard power connector was torn. If the power one was torn, that's worse, but some power packs have a few extra ones dangling that you could use. If not, then you'll have to either change the power pack which means unplugging a lot of stuff and is a hassle. The ribbon is a different matter. If you have room to manoever, changing that is both cheap, easy and bringing the old cable to the tech shop so you don't goof up is a good idea.

In all likelihood what you probably mean is a little 4pin pin cable since they are delicate and liable to damage if one is not careful in removing other items around it. You might be able to repair that if it is just wires that have become pulled out, but it is difficult without patience and good tools. So replacing that is the better option of course and shouldn't be a problem for your local tech shop either.

Get an ethernet card. There are second hand ones you can get that work like new. You can even use an old token ring adapter if you are not that bothered about speed and want to basically have a strong text-based internet machine.

Add more SDRAM if possible. 128Mb is beefy enough for Win9x systems, but if your goal is to make ME join the 21st century in the same way as modern systems - it ain't gonna happen. The support has long since gone and even now XP machines are becoming steadily underweight for modern web tasking.

There is however an odd discovery I have made. OS/2 Warp 4 from the 1990s can actually work today and well on a system such as you have. It is repackaged these days as EComStation by Serenity systems. It is a learning curve if you were not brought up on OS/2, but there is plenty of help out there. Windows and OS/2 are closely related, so getting around is not hard for the long-time Windows user. The good thing is by just installling Warp4 you would be able to reset your system easily and back to normal if you decide OS/2 is not for you.

And that's exactly what you want - to be able to have a hassle free format.

ECS info: http://www.ecomstation.com/product_info.phtml

Solve : any reliable diagnostic program???

Answer»

Since 98SE is so outdated and unsupported; what do people here use as a diagnostic program?
Something reliable that won't mess up the OS?

E.g., back in '03 i was using Norton Windoctor and Diskdoctor (this was right before Symantec turned to the Dark side of the Force).

But now, after i've re-formatted and re-installed a bright, shiny copy of my (same) OS, those same programs i've been using for years -won't run, and tell me: "you're missing important system files to run this program, allow me to install these system files".
Well no, i don't think so. It has never done that before; and i think it's really hinky it's doing so now. Same frelling disk and everything. Anyway, i've got nothing to check over the "health" of the system and look for possible problems/conflicts.
And i have NO idea where to find 98OS software.

I would really like some help with this, i want to keep it running smoothly. I don't think i could live thru another re-install.

regards,
PoetWin 98 SE was a great OS back in the day, but if you are planning on using this for Network/Internet use, I'd look towards using XP as a minimum OS these days. Windows XP can run on a computer as old as a Pentium II 233Mhz, 128MB Ram, and 6GB HD ALTHOUGH runs far better of 256MB or greater and a faster CPU.

For software diagnostics for Win98 many of the companies that had diagnostics that supported Win98, no longer support it and Win XP may be a minimum requirement OS to run them.

I would perform a clean installation instead of a Repair Installation after first backing up important data to bring the system back to a clean state. Then if it starts to act up you are more likely fighting old hardware problems vs corruption.

One program I would suggest if you have a more modern computer available with a CD burner is to find out the make and model of your hard drive on the win98 system and then DOWNLOAD the hard drive diagnostic and utility software for that drive. It can be burned to a CD and boot your system off of that CD, then run hard drive diagnostic son it to make sure your missing system files are not a hard drive on its way out. Seagate, Maxtor, and Western Digital all have this tool available at their websites.Aye i know it's not going to run anything current. I have loads of old programs and software (some that still use DOS) that aren't compatible with XP -and of course there's no more DOS.
Just 'cause something's old doesn't mean there's something wrong with it. It's a nice set-up for my purposes, i just want to be able run diagnostic programs, keep it running smoothly.

regards,
PoetQuote

frelling

What is this word?
Watch "Farscape".

(Nobody has any EXPERIENCE with Spotmau on 98??)
PoetQuote from: poetdowns on August 28, 2010, 11:43:33 AM
Watch "Farscape".

Is that some kind of game?
Also forgot to mention memtest86 bootable CD is great for testing Ram and performance stats of systems. Solve : Crazy question about WINDOWS 98SE?

Answer»

This is going to sound weird but here goes. I really like the background picture that can be accessed by windows 98SE. This isn't wallpaper, it's if you select NONE. When none is selected, on 98SE you have a pattern you can choose from along with a color. First of all, for some reason all of the wallpaper choices aren't listed where they should be either. I can understand if I don't get any responses to this and won't be upset. Does anyone have an idea where these things might reside where I could copy it and put in on another computer as wallpaper.I don't think I understand your entire question.

I Do understand what you mean by patterns. It is a small 8x8 monochrome bitmap that you can create Which appears behind your normal background if you have one set. (Display Properties->Background Tab, and choose the "Pattern..." button)

The pattern you select is saved in the registry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop in the Pattern value as a space delimited series of strings.

From what I can tell the actual patterns that you select in the dialog are hard coded into Explorer or a shell DLL, and not available for direct editing.

If you export the values in Desktop and import them to another PC, you will transfer the pattern, though.

Wallpaper itself iirc is merely a listing of applicable files from "C:\windows\web\wallpaper" unless you change the folder with tweakUI.

THANKS for the response and the info. Like, "sandstone" or whatever. You can search for the name. But i did double check on my (98SE) own system, and that's where background/wallpaper files are stored. Unless it's a part of a Theme (some basic Themes COME with the 98 OS). is a sub-directory somewhere under

regards,
Poet
Quote from: poetdowns on August 22, 2010, 04:24:24 AM

Do you know the name of the pattern? Mine is a much simpler BSA Bantam D14.
Though when I win the LOTTO I will again have a P&M Panther 120S one of which I once owned and long for again! My first bike was a 1954 D1 Bantam with plungers. I later worked at a dealer's (Fowler's Of Bristol) just in time to see the demise of BSA-Triumph (they were still making B175s at the time) My mate got a Panther for £10, a 600 single (I think that was the 100) that came with a Busmar double-adult "chair" (sidecar) that he took off and rode the bike solo. This got a bit hairy on the corners because on a sidecar outfit the bike never leans (hopefully!) so the tyres wear flat (like a car's). In fact I think it probably had SPECIAL sidecar outfit tyres, and I daresay the frame was none too straight, but what a lot of fun we had. You had a lever on the handlebar that worked a "decompressor" valve in the cylinder head so you could turn it over to the right stroke before starting and another lever to advance the ignition so it didn't kick back and send you flying...

Is your D14 a 3-speed or 4-speed?

Quote
P&M Panther

From memory... Phelon & Moore?
My D14 Bantam is 4 speed with points and coil ignition. Swing Arm rear end.
Yes Phelon & Moore is correct as is the 100 being 600cc.
Mine was also attached to a D/A sidecar, but I got it well lined up and it handled fine. Then I am prejudiced, I like outfits! The Panther also had a "half compression lever" on the right side of the crankcase. Lift that and the bike cannot kick back. Forget it and you could soon be airborne! I USED to use sidecar tread tyres on it which have a much flatter tread than normal bike tryes.
I have only been to Fowlers once, about 12yrs ago, for some Yamaha XV parts.Problem solved. I have been given a computer running WIN 3.1.

Solve : Win 3.1 won't boot?

Then it asks if you would like to step through autoexec.bat as well- if you say y, it does so. if you say n, it simply runs all the commands in autoexec.bat.

F5 skips both altogether.

however, skipping config.sys will mean that himem.sys will not be loaded, so windows 3.1 won't start in that instance either. however, if the starting of windows 3.1 is normally done "automatically" (with win in autoexec.bat) then you can use f5 to skip that and be able to edit it out of autoexec.bat. at that point, you can reboot and see if everything works to loading windows. (for example, watch for error messages from the various drivers that load).

In fact- post your config.sys, autoexec.bat, and C:\windows\system.ini files here.OK thanks for the replies.

Everything works fine up to the loading of windows. I took the "win" line out of the autoexec.bat file and up to then it's ok.

So it's my guess that dos is working ok it's the windows part that's the problem. I'll have a look at the system.ini file and post it if I can't figure out any problem.

Thanks again for your time.first thing I'd try is to change the video to standard VGA, via "setup"

(change to the windows directory and run "setup.exe" from there (it might be mssetup, I can't remember). and that will allow you to change some of the setup options.Quote from: rodle on June 14, 2010, 04:41:04 PM
OK thanks for the replies.

Everything works fine up to the loading of windows. Someone mentioned changing the video to standard VGA and that is a good start. Video drivers can often be a problem with starting up windows and OS2 warp. When you run setup from the windows prompt, you can go through the whole thing without WORRYING about any major changes to your hard drive. It's called the "taskbar notification area" the confusion comes because so much MS documentation on other subjects calls it the "system tray"... this name actually dates from the Win95 Betas:
http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2003/09/10/54831.aspx

Additionally- the tray properties dialog that is shown does not posess the required "Quick Launch" option (nor any option with Q as an accelerator) the Quick launch option that needs to be toggled is in fact in the right-click menu's "toolbar" submenu.

Only thing I can think of would be to write something in C or another language that can call into the windows API and use GetMenu,GetSubMenu, and other such calls to acquire the menu handle of the "toolbars"... option, and then send a emulated WM_MENUSELECT message to the SHELL_TRAYWND. I personally KNOW that Quick Launch is accessible in the properties of the TaskBar, rather than of the Systray - that is why I listed Task Bar in #1 of my tasks. Your last paragraph is 'all Greek to me'.Sidewinder. You may call it VB script, but functionally it appears like a batch file to me. So thank you for actually constructing it, rather than just advising me to use VB script. I will 'try it out' - no doubt it will not succeed at first, but maybe with some tinkering, we can tweak it to co-operate. I however am a total ignoramus about VB script, so no doubt will need further help. I do hope your reference to systray rather than taskbar is not a portent of failure.

In case it is of interest, I want to explain why I would want to 'toggle' the QuickLaunch switch. Solve : Virus protection?

Answer»

I would welcome some advice on what virus protection I should use. I have a Windows 98 OS and I use Firefox. I am aware of the fact that it can be vulnerable but changing to a better OS - possibly Linux is not really on the cards. I have been using avast! but I get the impression that it does so much computing that it could well be the cause of the very slow response to typing that occurs on occasions. I also have Ad-Aware and Spybot which I run occasionally. There is also CCleaner which I have not used recently. I probably should use just one and become familiar with its capabilities.CCleaner is good for clearing the crap (thus the name) from your system, but does no real-time protection. I recommend it for light system housekeeping - but that is it.

Avast! is really heavy like AVG and is a menace on resources - especially on RAM. I would go for the lightest AV you can get - depending on your surfing habits. If you download a lot of stuff, you need something ROBUST. I would visit TrendMicro and see what they have. Solve : Win 3.11 firewall??

Answer»

I have rescued an old 80686 PC from a certain fate of being destroyed. It was part of a clear out of ancient equipment in the junk room at work recently and when I got a hold of it, I understood possibly why it was junked by someone in IT from the distant past. The CD-ROM didn't work and this obviously made upgrading it to win95 with the rest of the machines more difficult.

The drive was formatted in preparation for another OS. So I found a copy of Windows 3.11 and spanned it on to old diskettes after getting DOS 5 on it. I looked everywhere in our old software pile for DOS 6, but could not find it. Could have downloaded it from somewhere, but I thought DOS 5 - which oddly survived being thrown out throughout the years, was good enough.

Managed to get Workgroups on, then I went to work on the PCI slots. The slots were all raided ages ago apart from the video card. Found an crystal audio card and got the sound going. Drivers were easy for that. The video card needed drivers as well and it turned out to be a good one for its day - capable of 1024x768 with 64k color. After few days, I dug out old DOS games and MS Publisher 2.0, MS Golf 2.0, etc., etc.

Then I decided it was time to see if I could get it on our network. First I would need an ethernet card. After several TRIES from the junked cards - I finally found an old one that I could find a driver for. It worked. I had never seen Windows 3.11 running on broadband. There it was - on a machine it was designed for - WORKING! Got the CD-ROM drive with an old 24x I found. Then I got old IE5 and Opera on there to acquire HGopher, FreeAgent and other texty internet software of the old days.

It runs like a top. In a race to the desktop from bootup it easily defeats XP and Win7 in side by side trials.

I want to take it home now. But I am concerned about one thing. At home, I do not have the convenience of having a nice network firewall like I do at work. If I simply plugged this computer into my network connection at home, would it be likely be attacked? Apart from creating a network server or adding a firewall router to my cable modem - is there any other client software I should use to make it secure from hacks?

On the other side, should I worry at all? Considering that all packet bot sniffers are calculated to attack 32bit and higher systems?

What's the lowdown on old OS firewall protection anyway?

My next project will be to put OS/2 warp on an old 166. A bit more of a challenge driver-wise. Warp was cool in those days - I know it is 'windows-ish' that is true, but I think it would be a nice addition to the museum.personally, I wouldn't bother with a firewall. Then again, I don't bother with a firewall on any of my machines.Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 28, 2010, 02:54:47 PM

personally, I wouldn't bother with a firewall. I just read about 'gnatbox' - and the guy using it has never had a problem. Others claim to have had their old systems severely compromised. I guess I should just try it out and see.If you have more than 1 computer, it's a lot easier to get a router. The router will suffice as a firewall. BTW, Windows 3.11 (or Windows for Workgroups 3.11) is the same as Windows 3.1, but with networking included. Otherwise, networking was enabled through DOS. To them, it is pointless sentimentalism on my part - playing with a system they barely remember as children. They seem indifferent to this technology which was the forerunner to all the great things they enjoy today. If something was before WinXP or modern Linux - it isn't worth discussing to them.

Sadly, in a sense they are right. Since I got this system going, I was dismayed how the old browsers fall over on most of the popular websites. I tried the old text-based side of the internet. I went on gopher servers and I found something amazing. Gopher is still going with plenty of servers to keep you surfing for a while, but it is for the most part strangely frozen in time around the mid-90s. Almost just as I left it many years ago. Some dedicated people keep Gopher going and there are files galore from 15 to 20 years ago. It is weird to visit.

If you are interested. gopher://quux.org is a good place to start your trip.

When's the last time you tried a search with Veronica instead of Google?Quote from: Computer_Commando on April 28, 2010, 04:50:01 PM
All corporations used it or Windows NT 3.51 prior to the release of Windows NT 4.0

or NT 3.1, or OS/2 Warp.... or Solaris... or VMS... or... etc etc...

Quote from: MisterEvasion on April 28, 2010, 05:28:44 PM
One of the reasons I put 3.11 on instead of plain 3.1 was for that very reason. (personally, I don't check my sites for netscape navigator 4 support, either, so one can hardly blame the site authors).

IE5 and Opera should at least be usable most of the time, I would think.
Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 28, 2010, 05:39:52 PM
or NT 3.1, or OS/2 Warp.... or Solaris... or VMS... or... etc etc...
SORRY BCP, how could I forget about Solaris & VMS? They were more prevalent than Windows where I used to work. DEC Sparc's & Alpha 1000's, if I remember. The Alphas never ran Windows, but OpenVMS, even though NT4.0 supported both processors. The Alphas transitioned from EISA slots to PCI, so we bought all the remaining EISA's in stock. All the special add-in cards were ISA.Just an added note: I think with the old browsers an idea would be to turn off everthing in options and make NS, IE or Opera run like LYNX. I tried LYNX itself just to see if what they said was true that LYNX won't run on 3.x and they were not wrong.

But hope springs eternal for my next project - OS/2 warp 4 when I save another oldie from the scrap heap. Plenty of LYNX for that system.

I guess those LYNX guys didn't really like Windows or MSDOS very much...

Ah well, never mind. Just glad I never became unyielding when it came to that stuff... Well things are looking up for the 3.11 project. I believe a firewall is not all that important for 3.11 from what I have gathered from other users. An intrusion on 3.11 is not serious because of one important aspect missing from old 3.x systems that hackers and spyware houses rely on in the 21st century - the registry and roaming folders.

There is also a utility in 3.11 called netwatcher which can notify when someone is connecting to you and you can boot them immediately - kind of a manual firewall. In fact, machines running on DOS-based 16bit systems are insulated from 32bit malware. If I wanted to attack a 3.11 system, I would do it in the form of a TSR type scheme or a boot sector executable of some kind - a .com or .exe. But no hacking society would waste their time writing and testing such software when there are so few fish to catch. Even though I am running 32s - there is still no such thing as an HKLM or HKLU parameter segments apart from win.ini which is sort of the registry for 3.x. That can be backed up and replaced in the very unlikely scenario someone has made the effort to attack it.

Still, care must be TAKEN and relaxing too much on security no matter what system is folly.

Next up - I will be putting OS/2 Warp 4 on an old IBM Aptiva I found once I get the system fan/power pack replaced. That'll be fun.
windows 3.x does have a registry, but it's contents are pretty much limited to things like OLE classes (what programs can serve what documents to what other programs) as well as file associations (pretty much what HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is in 95 and later).

As far as likelihood of being hacked when your running windows 3.1 nowadays, I'd say you have about the same chance of being struck by lightning twice and being served dodo bird by a polar bear wearing a monocle, all on your birthday. I think the time will come very soon when Gopher will be rediscovered by many people - for informative gophersites without the risk of malicious scripting.

The usenet too has become less devoted to discussion nowadays and forums like this are today's threading. The usenet has turned into primarily a binary leech dump, with fewer and fewer devotees to what was once an accessible quick access forum. Back in the 1990s, I never thought about a firewall. The word was never mentioned - even during the Win95 days.

That's because firewalls were only used by corporate networks on the internet/WAN facing side. Even today, as much as people like to think otherwise, the "good" hackers are going after corporations- trying to leak source code for the latest game, or their flagship product, etc. It is the script kiddies who can hardly use the ping command that threaten the average user and try to build up botnets.

Quote
the web has become worse for opportunists with unscrupulous geeks writing malware for them.

a Snake-Oil salesman is a Snakeoil salesman, regardless of the medium. And trying to write malware has become harder and harder over the years- not easier, as the vulnerabilities they use are patched and new security is implemented directly into the operating System (windows UAC, for example). As far as I'm concerned, the actual dangers are no different then they used to be, and in fact, browsers and systems are hundreds of times more secure- but people are paranoid- and not because they understand the risks, but because they don't. a cave man with the common cold might have feared that it would kill them, simply because they don't understand. Now everybody knows that it's only fatal in very specific circumstances where another more terminal condition is concerned. Much in the same fashion, misunderstanding leads to paranoia, despite Quantos' humourous signature "Paranoia, it's what results when you have all the facts" it's rather the opposite. When you don't have all the facts, people tend to fill in the blanks with paranoid assumptions- generally, worst case scenarios. for example, what happens without an AV program would of course lead to the paranoid assumption that a virus infection is the only possible result. Of course, it is a result, but it's not the only possible outcome, and additionally, having an anti-virus program doesn't prevent the most dangerous viruses anyway, since the most dangerous viruses are the newest ones whose signatures don't exist in the database.

To illustrate- Linux is itself a rather secure environment, but it doesn't matter how secure a operating system is if you sidestep the protection. With windows, people are disabling UAC in droves because its "annoying"- most Linux users are more informed- they NEVER run as ROOT (administrator) and instead elevate for, and only for, those system administration tasks that require it. you won't find them running a browser as root, and yet I often find that those systems that have been severely compromised by viruses and malware have UAC disabled.

of course, running something like a browser as root doesn't in and of itself make the system vulnerable. But it makes your system as vulnerable as the browser- if the browser has a buffer overflow or some other issue that can be used by a script, or a vulnerability of some other type that can be taken advantage of, once the script is in control of the browser, if the browser is running as root the script is in control of the system. If the browser is not running as root, the script would still need to try to elevate to root, something a lot easier said then done. It is the benefit of a Limited user account, not to limit the user, but to limit the programs the user runs- not only in case one of those programs is purposely made malicious but also if one of those programs is an unintended vehicle of something malicious through a vulnerability.

Quote
Since Google decided to try and take over the internet and make ad-clicks a way for people to make extra money while sitting on their asses, the web has become worse for opportunists with unscrupulous geeks writing malware for them.

You are lying to yourself. web-based attacks and malware were far more prevalent google took hold. Considering Internet Explorer 3 allowed any page to run arbitrary binary code at will (ActiveX) it didn't take a lot of effort, either.

Quote
I really hate google, facebook and all the rest of them for what they have done to cyberspace over the years.

Google, facebook, etc. None of them have done anything bad to the internet. The internet was riddled with popups and flash ads before Google became prevalent in search around 2000, and before 1998 when they were founded it wasn't much different, aside from the LACK of a search engine that didn't have a page full of ads on their first page. AltaVista, Yahoo search, etc- all the various search engines their main pages with ads and sponsored ads. Google didn't, and in fact, they still don't- their main page is basically a logo, search box, and a few buttons. Sure they now have paid ads in various locations in the search results, but those locations are well defined and illustrated, as well, unlike the front page ads and the paid search results provided by altavista and the other search engines before google (they have of course abolished that practice, from what I can tell).

The reason that firewalls and Anti-virus software weren't heard of and therefore didn't sell very well before is because people weren't absolutely paranoid. Now everybody seems to think they need an Anti-virus, firewall, malware scanner, and about 12 other programs. And it is this very fear of needing these things that let's the ads that advertise things like registry cleaners and scanners make so much money for the people that run them. And in the long run the paranoia that drives people to install all these programs causes their computers to slow down and crash, as they install rogue-filled, adware supported "firewalls" and "anti-virus programs" that are actually just containers for a host of infectious software. The internet is only as dangerous as people want it to be, and nowadays it's an important "fact" that the "internet is a dangerous place" when in fact it's no different then it's ever been- as long as you don't try to do something stupid like download pirated software or music or "keygens" or anything along those lines- you will be perfectly safe. If that wasn't true, would be infected all the time by the "evil internet" as the "thousands upon thousands" of "expert hackers" that are trying to get into my PC will "jump for joy" that I have no software firewall installed. Since I have now been connected for over 2 years, and I've only been infected once (by a download acquired by "doing something stupid" listed above, packaged with the friendly neighborhood virut) All I can say is there is absolutely no basis for ever havign a software firewall installed on any machine. The main thing a firewall would prevent is a trojan program trying to "phone home" to it's controller. It's better to simply not download the trojan to begin with.

Additionally, despite equally prevalent claims that downloads can be changed "en route" to your PC, that simply doesn't happen. a download is acquired straight by connecting to the HTTP server and requesting the file.

Quote
I think the time will come very soon when Gopher will be rediscovered by many people - for informative gophersites without the risk of malicious scripting.

Aside from the exact same issues that have been prevalent with http and ftp. It's no safer then HTTP or FTP, unless you factor in the fact that each browser's writers have been working to eliminate those issues found in HTTP and FTP. Large scale and public attacks via the Gopher protocol are no less common but they are essentially back-burner issues. FTP can't run scripting anyway- the scripting part of any browser is solely at the discretion of the browser itself- the browser runs the script. Generally in a sandboxed environment. Of course because as I noted, everybody is paranoid, they assume that even though all the precautions have been taken, a script can somehow "escape" this sandbox and do what it pleases, and, in some cases, it can. but doing what it pleases is a lot harder then it sounds, since browser-included client side scripting languages (like VBScript and ECMAScript) don't have built in support for file operations, and the use of something like the FSO (file system objects) by a script running in the browser would require further circumvention of security, including the fact that the FSO is not marked as "safe for scripting" so cannot be instantiated by IE. of course since the script in a firefox or opera browser cannot create ActiveX Objects and doesn't have local file system access even if it breaks out of its "sandbox" I can't help but wonder what people are paranoid about. I don't know why people will cower in a corner when they find a few temporary files written by their browser at the request if a script, and yet continue to blithely attempt to download pirated software, music, and keygens with little import for their contents. For many people, Security is important until stands between them and what they want. in the latter case it doesn't matter how many UAC prompts appear when you try to double-click "fun game keygen.exe" they are going to run it, and the trojan that it certainly contains will be let loose on the system. And once a piece of malicious software is loose on your system, it doesn't matter how many superfluous "security" applications you have installed, you've already lost the prevention war. Some may say that a software firewall will prevent a trojan downloader from downloading more infections. Perhaps, but only until they are able to circumvent the software firewall. Remember the trojan program is running on the same machine as the firewall- it can do anything the firewall can, including changing registry keys associated with the firewall (say, allowing certain URLs through or something) or even disabling the firewall completely. Hardware firewalls aren't perfect but at least their settings cannot be changed by malicious software running within the network.

Anyway- asking ourselves wether we are better off now then we were several years ago, only the paranoid or deluded can say "no, we are not". The reason that, for example, you never had a firewall in 95 was because your system didn't need one- the attack vector that firewalls try ot prevent simply wasn't used. Windows 95, for example, had a vulnerability that you could send a specific packet to any system and instantly blue screen it, no questions asked. Anybody could have run a program to send this packet to a set of IP addresses and Blue screened every single one of them running windows 95. Doesn't sound like a security conscious operating system to me.

Solve : Manually Remove Windows 98 via Command Prompt?
