Solve : Wireless network need help? |
Answer»

Ok so This summer I pulled out my dads old laptop and I realized there is a wireless network adapter. Which is called infrared or something like that and it scannes for connections every 3 seconds but can't find my network or my nieghboors. Is there a way to get it working again, like IDK upgrading the bios IDK.
ANYWAY this is my sys.
windows 98 SE
550 MHz proccessor
128 mg RAM
12 GB hdd
floppy
CD player................

P.S I already tried the computer throught a LAN connection and it worked but i need wireless?!

Any help would be useful. Infrared is not a wireless network card. Infrared can be used to communicate with some devices, but unfortunately it is not a wireless network card. You may still be able to add a wireless network card to the older laptop if there is a PCMCIA SLOT that functions.you sure It says it searching for wireless internet/networksI'm sure.Quote from: comda on April 27, 2010, 10:23:35 AM

you sure It says it searching for wireless internet/networks

This just means it's looking for any other devices trying to communicate via IR. the OS sees it as a network device so it might get confused and display the state wrong.like what kind of devices? It's searching for network and wireless devices that it's not finding.example of infrared devices: bluetooth and remote....Quote from: dlx on April 28, 2010, 01:27:35 AM
example of infrared devices: bluetooth and remote....

Put down the crack pipe buddy.

IR is not Bluetooth. Solve : Win 98 script error? |
Answer»

I have HP Pavilion 4455...It was a little slow (in September) so I used the recovery disc that came with the PC...I cannot open any page because of "script error"....I was told by techies that W98 was not supported & was no longer WORTH using.....I had a friend load W2K Pro...It is very slow & I can't get the modem to work. I use the micro word for creating specific document that I need. And I need to get this computer working to retrieve these files.Do you have another computer you could temporarily connect the hard drive from the Win 95 machine in as a second/slave hard drive? That would allow you to search for the files on that hard drive and copy them over to the other computer or a flash drive or other medium. A Classic case of waiting to late to consider backups. It's pretty amazing that people can use a computer for 15 years and not even consider making a single backup of their documents.

First question: WHERE are the files stored on your drive? the "My documents" folder? boot into MS-DOS and run Dir C:\*.doc /s /b and it will list all your DOC files. Thanks that work great. But how do I copy them. And any Ideas about the fatal exections or registry/ config. error To copy, first insert a floppy disk (or some other removable drive). Type at the command prompt (I assume your documents are on C:\): copy C:\*.doc A: (replace A: with the drive letter of the removable disk)

That will copy the DOC files to the drive. I always felt like I had a lot more control in the MS-DOS client days...

I have to admit I love DOS, I still use it all the time. I also love cmd.exe, I'm always making NT Command Files. I have to admit making batch files in MS-DOS was a real pain and still is, cmd.exe just seemed to go through most of the problems and were it didn't provide immediate solutions there were still workarounds.Yeah, I felt the same way upgrading from 98SE to XP. (I had used 2000 and XP a lot at school before this). my main issue was that I would no longer be able to boot into "DOS mode" to fix issues. I learned about the RECOVERY console and that worked on several occasions to clean out viruses and fix issues with my graphics drivers. As of yet I haven't needed to run any of the Vista or Windows 7 repair tools on their respective discs, which I guess in a way is a testament to increased reliability (although TBH the reliability is probably due to the fact that this is on a fresh build rather then older machines with bugs in their AGP chipsets). Most of what I know about the older Operating Systems is simpyl based on what I was able to do with them programming; mostly from (the late ) Paul Dilascia's C++ [emailprotected] column. I still remember re-creating Internet Explorer's ability to move around the menu bar as part of a rebar band. it works great. This is the main reason I'm dead set against most people's claims that MS uses "undocumented functions" in their applications; this was used against IE, but really the IE team wrote the stuff themselves; the "menu bar" is really just a standard toolbar, and anybody can use those, and they are well documented. Certainly some of the stuff that people claim is "undocumented functions" is really just tough to do; like with Word 95, which for some stupid reason had it's own gradient title bar (Gradient title bar's weren't added to windows until windows 98). It wasn't a specific function but rather catching of documented messages and drawing the title bar themselves, something which according to MS's guidelines they shouldn't have done (and this was Microsoft office, lol). Anyway, that whole "undocumented functions" thing is a whole other can of worms.

| |

Solve : Installing an ISA Ethernet card in Windows 95? |
Answer»

A few days ago, for my oldest computer (HP Pavilion 7285 200Mhz with Windows 95) I had purchased an ISA Ethernet card that is still sealed in its original packaging that is to be used for multiplayer gaming. In the NEAR FUTURE I am planning on getting an ethernet hub to connect the computer through ethernet cables to the nearby Dell 2350 and the main computer I use in my family's library which is the HP Pavilion a1440n, to enable a three player game to be possible without additional computers being brought by friends. The issue at hand is that I'll have a need to connect the WAN port of the hub to the router near the library computer. (100 foot ethernet cables will be needed for connecting to the library computer and the router, as the hub will be in the basement closer to the other two computers.) If the oldest computer doesn't have a firewall, I believe it could be exposed to viruses and other threats if it connects to the internet.

I was told by evilfantasy in my Win95 anti-virus topic that an old computer like that one, being only used for old games, would not need an anti-virus, and it certainly doesn't need one if it doesn't have an internet connection. If I hook the hub up to the router, will the internet connection on the old computer work if it's hooked up with crossover cables for use in local multiplayer games? I need the answer to this question so I can determine whether or not to uninstall the anti-virus I installed on it earlier this evening.

Another good thing is that this will enable me to transfer files from the old HP Pavilion for backup if they're bigger than 1.44MB in size. The WAD files in the directory of the Doom games would be among them.

Now, the major question regarding installing the ISA Ethernet card is this: How will I set the card up after installing it?

EDIT: The first paragraph was edited after I saw Computer_Commando's response.Quote from: Ryan on February 17, 2010, 06:07:15 PM

...
1. Solve : Which anti-virus and firewall program(s) are best for Windows 95?? |
Answer»

Can anybody tell me what the recommended anti-virus and firewall programs for Windows 95 are? I recently purchased an ISA Ethernet card, and may eventually attempt to connect the computer through a hub to the router for use in multiplayer games, and will want to keep any unwanted intrusions out. Once I receive replies, I'll bookmark this topic so I can return to it later when needed. Just to let you know, the computer that this operating system is on has 128MB of RAM, so I need anti-virus and firewall programs that are light on resources.Avast! If it doesn't, I'll have to get an older version than the one you mentioned.

However, after this burn, I will only have four burnable CD-Rs left, and so I must conserve them for burns that are absolutely necessary. The anti-virus is fully compatible with Windows 95, but I need at least Internet Explorer version 4.01. Do you know where I can get that? The computer has version 3. I'm downloading version 5.0.

I'm going to try to install IE5 first. If that does not succeed, I'll install an ISA ethernet card and a firewall first.

That IE5 installation was for Windows 3.1/NT 3.5. I'll have to keep looking.

EDIT:
I found the 32-bit version of IE5 through Wikipedia. Now Avast! is installed on the computer, but a DLL FILE is missing. I need a good firewall for Windows 95 now. (I won't download and install it until after installing the ethernet card.)It is highly unlikely that you will find a free antivirus that works with Windows 95.

I very rarely say this but. You need to get a new OS. None of today's technology is designed to work with a system that old.Sorry evilfantasy, but I can't get a new operating system for that computer. The processor is a 200MHz Pentium, and not fast enough for even Windows XP. The newest operating system I'm willing to install on it is Windows 98SE, and I'd rather not do that unless I don't have a choice. It is not the main computer I use, and is only used for old computer games from the mid-to-late 90s.

Besides, Avast installed successfully on it and is able to scan the computer. The only reason I'm doing this is so that I can get an ISA Ethernet card installed to be able to play multiplayer games in Jedi Knight, Mysteries of the Sith, Quake and Quake II, as well as the Doom series. In the future I plan on purchasing an ethernet hub and a very long ethernet cable to enable a three or four-player match. (A four player match isn't possible without a friend bringing a computer.) The anti-virus and firewall are there for protecting the computer. At least this version of Avast is updateable.Quote

and is only used for old computer games from the mid-to-late 90s.

Then you really don't need an antivirus. I'll think about removing it later.200MHz Pentium with 128MB RAM will have no trouble at all with Win98SE, should you ever decide to change.Quote from: Computer_Commando on February 17, 2010, 06:10:14 PM
200MHz Pentium with 128MB RAM will have no trouble at all with Win98SE, should you ever decide to change.

Of course, Computer_Commando. Solve : os reinstall problems - Invalid System Disk? |
Answer»

Im trying to install 98 on my old computer. So I use the windows 98 setup cd and format the hard drive, after that it tells me to restart. I restart, boot from setup cd and it does a routine check on the system. After that it tells me to remove any floppy disks from the drive and restart. So when I restart and boot from the cd it says it has to do another routine check, after the check it tells me again to remove any floppys and restart. Its going in circles. We are trying to connect the laptop to your router using your new pc card..so when we use the ipconfig command, it will tell us a lot about the state of your laptops connectivity... Solve : Win 98 and USB use? |
Answer»

The reason USB doesn't work as well as it does with 2000 and XP is simply because there was no provision for device classes; well, that's a lie... there was, but the only ones at the time were pretty much keyboards and mice- HID devices. Flash drives were pretty much just invented at the time; this is why every company pretty much has to MAKE their own driver; there was no abstraction of a generic "Storage device" class, so it's basically just a USB device.

I believe windows ME fixed this; it is no longer up to the driver to understand the device, but the device's job to understand the driver. (turns out that almost every mass-storage device did this already with draft specs)

the Generic Mass Storage Driver (Come to think of it, I'm not 100% sure it was included in the unofficial SP, I might have downloaded separately) either way, there is one available. (maybe it was this one?

Now, of course it's not flawless, I've had issues with hot-plugging and sometimes it takes a few tries before I realize that windows 98 doesn't make the beep-boop sound like XP and open explorer myself, but aside from that it has worked quite well for me.

regarding actually GETTING these onto the target PC, only thing I can think of is to burn a CD-R or split the FILE onto floppy disks.

That's the one I used, too. As you undoubtedly noted from my earlier post i DID FIND a driver for the supposed "fix on 98SE" but that it did not work. However given that it is probably an O/S issue i believe that dooms soybean's alternative hardware solution to be doomed as well. New PCI usb port card will not remove the overriding issue of the O/S i would think?
BC No the USB root hub does not appear in device manager. I will try the "this one" link and see if it does anything--will advise.

Ahh, well there's the problem. It's not necessarily a issue with the OS but rather the fact that the OS isn't even aware of the existence of the USB connectors.

you could try using the Add New Hardware wizard. with any luck it will detect it and install automatically. The Unofficial Win98 Service Pak was a 3 year project and could very well solve this.

| |

Solve : Windows 98SE Exiting to Dos? |
Answer»

Hello,
Installed win98 to have a true MS-DOS in native mode operating system. The best thing about it: Restarting in MS-DOS mode is not working when I click the shutdown menu and RESTART in MS-DOS. The display looses signal and the computer goes into an unknown state. I thought it may be something to do with the video CARD, so for the record I am using an ATI7000 AGPX4 Card. The motherboard has INTEL Chipset ICH2.
I tried to smooth out the installation as much as I know how. Installed all of the drivers I found online and on the disks, no problems in the device manager other than the onboard sound. Could not find a driver that works still searching.

The other thing, I did find in the COMMAND FOLDER several MS-DOS shortcuts for games. EMS and XMS support, or just XMS, and also a plain Restart in MS-DOS. So the first two seem to work and reboot while the latter does the same as when I click on restart in MS-DOS from the shutdown menu. I thought that it may have something to do with config.sys file or autoexec.bat, so, I checked the files and printed them out, except the latter file which is set to simply use "existing MS-DOS Configuration" and which does not show the contents, (program tab on the shortcut that is).

Another thing, I thought to check the config.sys and autoexec.bat files on the root of my drive, but they are empty. Only one line device=C:\windows\setver.exe

I tried making a few changes to the config.sys but immediately had a problem at boot, so I think that first line setver.exe is critical to windows starting.

Any suggestions, please help. If anyone knows where I can turn to, please do.
Perhaps your display doesn't support the text mode? Are you able to boot directly into MS-DOS Mode via the F8 at startup? (you have to press it before the boot logo appears)I don't think so, DOS will work when I hit F8 at boot. So the card must supports text mode?
The only problem I have is with the shutdown menu command to restart in MS-DOS.

Can this be anything with ACPI Power Management. I found out there is a special SWITCH to use when installing as in > setup.exe /PJ

Well, pressing F8 at startup should give a similar capability, as a workaround.

Is this Windows 98 SE, or FE? the original release had a LOT of bugs involving restarting in MS-DOS Mode. And both versions often had Conflicts with the video card drivers that prevented it altogether.

Sometimes it also takes quite a while to actually get to the DOS prompt- so maybe give it a few minutes at the blank SCREEN. if you haven't done so.

If you have SE you'll want the "Unofficial service Pack" as it rolls in a number of updates Microsoft released, including one titled "Shutdown supplement" specifically to fix "Restart in MS-DOS Mode" issues.I checked the video related bios settings, and there was one option to "reserve IRQ for VGA Card", and since I have AGP, decided I don't need to take up the extra resource. Enabling this to see if it would make a difference actually did, and I'm now able to restart in DOS from the shutdown menu. I wonder if I will need that IRQ for something else? OR it is funny how computers work.Does anyone know what this means.
Autoexec.bat
REM The following lines have been created by Windows. Do not modify them.
REM
C:
CD C:\Windows
CALL C:\Windows\command.com
C:\windows\win.com /wx

Couldn't reboot, so I blanked out the whole autoexec.bat file. This was in there, and not sure how it got there, since I think the whole thing was blank to begin with. Couldn't find what the /wx switch means neither. Not sure if I can/need to put them back now?
Any way I can regenerate the files. That's generated by Windows when you reboot into MS-DOS mode. It places that there so that you can type Exit and "return" to windows.

The /WX switch is undocumented. It will restart the computer and will restore config.sys and autoexec.bat from the "old" versions that windows replaced when the system was restarted in MS-DOS mode; these originals are CONFIG.WOS and AUTOEXEC.WOS.

| |

Solve : I've built a Windows 98 SE system in 2018, but why?? |
Answer»

Several reasons really, nostalgia being the foremost. However, the system I built it on isn't what you'd normally expect to see running Windows 98. Also, this post will serve as my "Hello, here I am!" post. If you don't understand my logic (or lack thereof) by the end of this post, you may never understand it. There is a madness to my method, wait, was it the other way around?

So I'll back up a LITTLE and say, first off, I've got old computers stacked around as spares because my father uses the "MagicJack" phone service, and every few years the system rigged up (Usually something close to 20 years old) decides to die, so I dig out another garbage PC from eons past and force it into service as a new host for the telephone. With all of this hardware laying around, none of it even powerful enough to really open a modern internet browser and check YouTube, I started to wonder "What on earth CAN I run with this stuff?".

So I set to it, my first choice for a Windows 98 system was a Dell Precision 360, 2.8GHz Pentium 4 with hyperthreading, 512MB DDR RAM, 128MB nVidia Quadro FX500, 40GB WD HDD. The install seemed to go well, though slowly. The first boot also went the same, however after that I was plagued with video card errors, pertaining to resource allocation mostly. I quickly learned that Windows 98 SE does not play well with ACPI BIOS', and this motherboard lacked features to disable the ACPI functions. So, I decided to abandon the Dell and began rummaging around, I dug up an old Socket 478 MSI 661FM2-LSR, I robbed the 2.8GHz Pentium 4 from another Dell, I wanted to use an older 1.6 P4 but that CPU is very dead.

To my surprise, and amusement, the BIOS settings in the MSI motherboard allow me to not only disable ACPI functions, but also enable USB legacy mode forcing the USB ports to 1.1 (Which was handy later on because Windows 98 doesn't like the controller operating in 2.0 even though Win98 SE supports USB 2.0), and it also allowed me to disable the usual onboard devices I would not be using, such as LAN, SATA, and the floppy controller (Surprisingly I didn't need a floppy drive, which is good 'cause while I have floppy disks up to my eyeballs still, I don't have a single working drive).

So, backtracking a little again, my first attempt to install Windows 98 SE on the Dell was by way of USB, it however only saw the USB drive and could not see internal drives. So I rummaged around some more and found a blank "Optimum" branded CD-R that I'm pretty sure dates back to the mid 2000's. Considering Windows 98 SE abandonware, I sought out finding a proper ISO, and succeeded. I had no issues burning the ISO as Windows 10 makes this pretty (Stupid) simple compared to Windows of the dark ages, (I'm looking at you, Vista, I know your true name).

Anyhow, now that I had the parts sorted and laying out across a table, and the parts being the aforementioned MSI motherboard, A 2.8GHZ Pentium 4 with HT, 512MB of DDR, a 40GB Western Digital WD400, a 48x Samsung CD-ROM drive (Dell OEM), a nVidia FX500 Quadro (Dell OEM), a Dell power supply, and an old 15 inch view sonic LCD panel I set out to install windows. The install went without too much trouble, except that, unbeknownst to me, it simply updated the failed install from the Dell with many issues. Much to my surprise, windows installed and booted with no issues, the first reboot however hung up. I went into safe mode, accessed the device manager and, uh oh, everything from the Dell was left over. So I painstakingly manually removed every single device from the device manager, even the ones for the system. Upon rebooting, I spent quite a bit of time going through the usual rigamarole of Windows 98 discovering new hardware on startup (A whole computers worth). I could not get the onboard AC'97 audio to work with Windows 98 for the life of me, I'm not sure why, this chipset is pretty common. I instead installed a Diamond audio PCI sound card (5.1 channel, strange for windows 98 yet again!)) (C-media CMI8738). I could not get the gameport working, which is a bummer, but I have no idea where my Microsoft Sidewinder is anyway, so not a huge deal.

After being sure the system was (Fairly) stable, I went about assembling this bizarre rig. I put away the Dell power supply and dug out an Antec 350 watt PSU (With the dual fans and gold fan grills, huzzah, 2003 again!) some mid 2000's HP case with a rear 80mm fan mount, a single 3.5" HDD bay, and dual 5.25" ODD bays. The floppy bay is missing, odd enough. Upon assembling this rig, I installed an old copy of Destruction Derby, and immediately realized I have no CD audio cable laying around, so that's on the "Where am I going to find THAT!?" list. Other games where abandonware and run off the hard drive, they function fine.

Everything seemed to be going great, until the computer froze while I was playing Blood, and would no longer display video after POST. I got several rapid beeps, the computer booted, but no video. The FX 500 had finally had enough and decided to exit stage right, I swapped it out for an entirely overkill (As if 128 megs in win 98 wasn't overkill) nVidia GeForce FX 5500 AGP 8x w/ 256MB of RAM made by BFG. I also, purely for my own amusement, threw in another 512MB of RAM (1GB total now). The fun didn't stop there though, no, not at all. The first attempt to boot with that FX 5500 went fine, except that the fan sounded like a coffee grinder. I robbed the heatsink (and fan) from the dead FX 500, applied some modern thermal compound that came with the Cryorig H7 I am using in my main rig. Same stuff I used on the Pentium 4 when I installed it in the MSI motherboard. The CPU needed a thorough cleaning, I think there where two kinds of thermal crap on it and the heatsink.

I rebooted into safe mode, removed the old GPU from the device manager, the last thing you want is a GHOST device in the pre-NT Windows. Upon rebooting, the drivers installed, as the legacy drives for any FX card are the same, much as most GTX cards now use the same drivers. I'm not going to say all because I know there is some one off oddball out there waiting to make me wrong. So, back to playing Blood, risen from the dead, uh oh, here I go a murderin' again! ... Or... Not... Random hangs, lag, frequent bluescreens stating that the system resource was occupied, the one that goes back to desktop rather than rebooting. Wasn't sure what was going on, sooo... I crawled through the BIOS, that's when I noticed something up to this point unknown. The Pentium 4 I installed supports hyperthreading, I literally facepalmed myself at this point. I disabled HT and APIC, as Windows 98 likes neither of these without some patchwork to the best of my knowledge (Though this is coming from information I learned well over a decade ago and haven't used in at least a decade). After disabling an alphabet soup of BIOS functions meant for NT era windows computers, windows 98 is now stable (And flying toasters across my screen )

So, now with that sorted, apart from a few software bugs like the version of 7zip I use, this system is rock solid and ready to go. I did a few things to make the system more USABLE, they are as follows:

First and foremost, I installed a universal USB mass storage controller, it works with most anything I've tried so far, even a USB to IDE adapter, and modern SanDisk Cruzer Glide 16GB Flash Drives.

Second, 7zip, crucial so I don't' have to unzip everything on my main rig before copying it to the win98 rig.

Third, I installed an older version of CCleaner to clean up the bulk of crap and registry issues that would follow if I didn't clean up after all the unzipping and installing.

Fourth, I updated the INBUILT windows installer to 2.0, this helps a lot with later programs and windows components you may need

Fifth, I installed DirectX 9.0C, most people don't' even know this runs on Windows 98, but it does run quite well, however I recommend installing the runtimes with the game you get, as it may be lacking certain run times for 6, 7, and 8.

I also plan on swapping out the slow 40GB drive for a faster IDE drive later on, I'd like to get my hands on a good late model 80 gig Western Digital or Seagate. The 137GB limit on hard drives in Windows 98 doesn't really bother me, I can't even see how I'd fill up that much space in Windows 98. I'm also going to dig up a genuine Sound Blaster 16 somewhere.

If there is any interest in this post, I will post further on the topic and see if anyone can come up with some creative ways I can use abandonware to use and abuse this thing. I've installed my old copy of Flatout (derby racing game), it runs it quite well and that game is from 2005. I've tried out Doom, Doom 2, they both have sound issues I'd like to sort out, a few DOS games don't like the sound hardware too much actually. Everything else seems to work fine however. Most games from the Windows 95, 98, and games that supported 98 up into the 2000's work fine.

So, I have this system hooked up to a Dell 17" 1708FP LCD monitor, 1280x1024 @ 75Hz, it has a built in USB hub which I use as front USB as the USB ports are missing from this case. I now have two keyboards and two mice on my desk, until I find a cheap USB keyboard / mouse switch later on. So, that's it for now, as I said ,if there is interest in this bizarre experiment of mine I may continue to post on it.

I've learned something from this mess too, and that is, how much I'd forgotten about Windows 98.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Quote

Considering Windows 98 SE abandonware
You are mistaken.
Quote from: Salmon Trout on March 06, 2018, 03:37:33 PM
You are mistaken.

How's that? No one runs it anymore outside of obscure outdated systems, it's not supported by the manufacturer anymore, there is no noteworthy active development going on for Windows 98 SE either. I'd say that lands completely within the realm of abandonware. Legally, Windows 98 is copyright software. So are MS-DOS and NT. This is that kind of forum.
"Abandonware" isn't really a thing; it's sort of a fabricated moral divide people made up to try to address their cognitive dissonance over copyright terms to justify piracy of older software. It doesn't have any real legal basis in copyright, though; Software not being actively developed or even sold doesn't change how copyright works, after all. The best description is "abandonware" is copyrighted software that you can pirate with little risk of the copyright holder coming after you... which is a rather wide brush.

Personally I just leave out where I got software I installed when telling stories. Some of it is legally acquired, some of it isn't. Doesn't really matter, and I certainly wouldn't want to condone piracy.

Anyway my OS selection criteria:

IBM PC and XT get MS-DOS, obviously. They can run Real Mode Windows but there is no reason to and it runs poorly. Best ot let them do what they do best.

286's that have VGA cards get Windows as well as MS-DOS. Lower graphics cards means Windows isn't worth it.

386's get MS-DOS and Windows 3.11 (And of course a VGA card if they don't have one- ideally, a Video accelerator)

486's I think excel as MS-DOS and Windows 3.11 systems. With enough RAM they can run Windows 95 well.

Pentium's/Nx586 I think are best for Windows 95. However, the Faster MMX chips can run Windows 98SE well.

Pentium II-class systems I think work best with Windows 98SE.

Pentium III can be used with Windows 98SE but I think it get's more bang for it's buck with Windows 2000. Windows XP can run well on some higher end chips or Pentium M's.

Pentium 4 get's Windows XP.

Beyond that and it's pretty much a choice between Vista/7/8.1/10, or, of course, Linux. No Windows for Workgroups ? ?Quote from: patio on March 06, 2018, 05:42:11 PM
No Windows for Workgroups ? ?

Yeah, That is what I meant with 3.11, rather than the rather "rare" version of 3.11 that wasn't. That said, I seldom make use of networking on such old systems- not much point really- so Most of the main benefits of WfWG are lost. It might be useful for transferring files but I disabled the earlier versions of SMB on my main systems long ago so Windows 9x and earlier can't access them properly.

On the topic of Windows 98SE, however:

Generic USB Storage Drivers for Windows 98FE and Windows 98SE

Windows 98 Unofficial Service Pack Which rolls in hotfixes and some useful other software fixes into one large cumulative update.

KernelEx Which can allow some later software to run on earlier windows versions than they were intended for. It reminds me in some sense of Win32S for Windows 3.1.
Where do you live? In Siberia?
In the America,s Europe and much of Asia a used working PC desktop can be purchased for under $70 on auction sites or even locally. It would also be exceedingly pointless since their goal obviously is not to simply have a second PC but to specifically use older hardware and software.

It's sort of like complaining that revolutionary War re-enactors don't just line Rappahannock River with Anti Infantry machine guns. It sort of misses the point.

Also, there is a reason many of those systems are so cheap. Like any prefabricated system they are built down to a price, and those ones even more so, using stripped motherboards and a crippled BIOS, underpowered power supplies, and a reduced form factor that makes pretty much any upgrade difficult.

I'd say Garage sales and craigslist or kijiji are better if somebody wants a cheap, semi-modern system. But that was clearly not OPs goal.
Myself, I really like the idea of using something for a very long time. It just seems to be thong to thing to do. I still wear shoes that have holes in the doles because they are comfortable.
Likewise, one can feel comfort in maintaining and old system that one can understand. The new modern computers introduce concepts that are hard to grasp. If you look at it as a hobby, then it starts to make sense.

Still, you can get a working desktop with a windows 7 OS for less than the cost of the tools and parts needed to replace capacitors on an old motherboard.
Holes in the doles.....Thorough write-up, entertaining and informative read, thanks! Next step: Install broodwar, photocopy invitations to the LAN party...Well this got more interest than I thought it would, but that's cool though. I didn't mean to start an ethical debate on software copyright, my bad.

Anyway, I've been toying with the windows 98 machine for quite a while now, changed a few things the (most likely) final specs are as follows:

Pentium 4 2.8GHz (Underclocked to 1.86GHz) Northwood W/ HT (Disabled), 512KB L2, 800MHz FSB (Might swap it out for a P4 Northwood 2.4, 512KB L2 533MHz FSB, no HT)
MSI 661FM2-V (7060) 478 mATX motherboard, with the following features disabled; Hyperthreading, ACPI, APIC, SATA, and HDD SMART, onboard AC'97 audio
1GB DDR 400 (At 333 due to mismatched sticks)
BFG nVidia GeForce FX 5500 256MB AGP 8x
Soundblaster Live! All in all this is a pretty solid build and a pretty reliable setup. Although I did have to manually tell the computer not to install the wrong USB 1.1 drivers. It wants to install SiS 7001 drivers, even though the USB chipset is the 7002, strange but I fixed it by using generic drivers.

I think that's it, total budget, $0, nada, nothing. Well, a little bit of gas to go get a the free Soundblaster when I traded a 4GB SODIMM of DDR3 1333 for a 4GB DIMM at my local favorite PC shop. I needed the RAM to get my Dad setup with my old 1st gen Core i7 920 I bought with a Dell board back in 2013 for $100, stupid cheap, I'm good at finding stupid cheap stuff though.

The motherboard, hard drive, and DVD drive are parts my dad bought back in 2005 to build his own desktop, he'd had no prior experience and needed little help from me or anyone else doing it. I still have the CPU (2.93GHz Celeron) RAM (512MB kingston), case (Antec mid tower of some variety that requires the top to be removed to remove the side panels), and power supply from that original build. The BFG FX 5500 I got a long time ago to upgrade my Dad's PC, I think in 2008. I swapped out the Celeron based system for a Athlon X2, which was just this past week swapped out for the aforementioned i7. I am fortunate to have space to store this stuff (Junk, it's really junk), gives me something to do when I don't have money to do anything else.

The rest of the parts I got mostly out of PC's I've picked up off the side of the road. I have three Dell Precision 360's, some compact form factor Precision desktop, and a dead (Parts) optiplex GX260. I also picked up the HP case I am using for my Win98 rig on the side of the road. I'll upload some pictures of the antique spud I've built later on today, gonna borrow my Dad's old Kodak EasyShare for that 4:3 ratio goodness (And because my cell phone takes pictures that look like they're from a Logitech webcam circa 2006)

For now, I'll leave you with one of those horrid quailty cell phone pictures. And the hope that my suffering and stubbornness have helped someone build a vintage gaming rig rather than go the lazy (sane) route of emulation.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]So, through some trial and error I've found that my cell phone can do some interesting photos when it wants too, though most of the time it still looks circa 2006 webcam, here's a few of them scaled down.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]And a couple more...

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]

| |

Solve : Low Disk Space for Swapping File? |
Answer»

Greetings CH!

Its been a while, but I have finally completed (at least the hardware part) of my classic gaming PC! I will list specs down below for those interested, but I need your help in the software department a bit.

The computer seems to struggle at unzipping files, odd for a 1ghz Coppermine CPU, and often times even freezes. So far, I've installed Windows 98 SE, got USB drivers, GPU and Chipset drivers installed, Got DX9c installed and attempted to install the unofficial windows 98SE Service pack update, when I received an error that states the following,

"Extracting File Failed. It is most likely caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or Corrupted Cabinet file."

Now I've used computers with slower Cpu's in Windows 98SE and I had no issues like extracting the update, opening files on USB, or in the case of this computer, it freeze when even coping data from my USB.

I have one suspicion and thats my CF card "hard drive" but im not sure how id fix the issue. Instead of using a traditional hard drive, I decided to get a IDE adapter, and it has a 16gb CF card for its drive. I had my last two IDE drives fail on me, so im not really in the mood to trust any more.

Specs are

Spacewalker AV11 Motherboard
1ghz Coppermine Pentium 3 CPU
Chaintech Nvidia 4200Ti GPU @ 128mb
16gb CF card
256 + 128MB of SD RAM
And I think its a AWE 32 SoundBlaster card.

I plan to use this rig to play some of my classics like my classic need for speed collection, GTA VC, DOOM series, Titanic adventure out of time, GTA2 etc. So getting it running smoothly would be great. Appreciate your help in advance. Thanks.

It's the card...suprised you even got it to work on that setup

2 choices,,,back to an IDE HDD...or give up the ghostThe motherboard is of the vintage it may have bulged capacitors.
Also your ram of 256mb and 128mb seems a little strange for the motherboard when it was most likely to have worked best with 3 * 64 mb modules. If the motherboard supports the 384 mb of memory you will need to set the swap file size to at least this size.
I seem to remember running Windows 98 on 32 mb of memory. So perhaps try with just the 128 mb memory installed.
this link may give you some info https://www.techrepublic.com/forums/discussions/max-ram-for-windows-98-se/Quote from: patio on September 02, 2019, 07:21:05 PM

It's the card...suprised you even got it to work on that setup

2 choices,,,back to an IDE HDD...or give up the ghost

See I thought this myself, and know that CF cards are a hit or miss. As I see many YOUTUBERS including Lazy Game Reviews using them.

That could be part of my problem. Not denying that. however I know im also having some sort of issues with DirectX.

I'll do an install with a regular old spinner, and see how my results vary. I also happen to still have the manual to this motherboard. The book claims it can take a maximum of a 256mb stick per slot. so thats 3x 256mb. I went well under that limit. However, I plan to run a mem test to see if I have any ram issues. currently running 98 on a spinner. lets see how it goes. Millions of industrial machines boot and work from CF cards. Although they are normally industrial CF cards and cost heaps. It is a good idea to run the memory test .
It is not so much the amount of memory more that they are different sizes, if you have the manual is that configuration supported?
I would also check that the memory test is seeing the full 384 mb.
Also if you have jumpers for the FSB try installing Win 98 with a 66 Mhz FSB * 3 i.e 200 Mhz and after you have the drivers loaded then set for the correct FSB/multiplier. I haven't had much luck with CF Cards and Adapters. The problem is most of the ones you can get nowadays still identify as a removable DEVICE which seems to mess up some Operating Systems. In my case, I didn't run Windows 9x on it but neither 2000 nor XP were able to create or use a pagefile and any Windows Installer installation would always fail. You may be running into a similar set of limitations with your CF Card and adapter setup.

memory scan won't cost you anything but time. Getting another Standard IDE drive to try could verify if the problem is related to the CF Card or CF Card Adapter.Alright.

Small update. Swapped for a spinner drive and had the same issues. Got the low memory issue. So I swapped ram for a stick of 256mb PC100 ECC stick and those issues went away. So thats one problem solved.

However, im still getting crashing in video games. Tried NFS Porsche 2000, and it gets to the "Create Profile" Screen and freezes the PC, or the screen goes blank. Ive tried an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and even 3 different Power supplies and still the issue persists. and yes. I do need the min requirements of 600mhz and recommended of a 800mhz CPU. I might post a new Thread in assistance with what I need software wise.

After ironing out my disk space issue, and unzipping files, I successfully got Directx 9 installed and a got a few games installed and kept getting freezing and black screens. Installed GTA Vice City, and played a solid 30 minutes with absolutely no problems what so ever.

So can someone make a suggestion? Did I simply install Windows 98SE incorrectly? Or miss something? I did a clean install on a hard drive, got drivers, and installed DX9c (I think it was December 2006 last edition for win98SE). Maybe Bad ram had something in the install corrupt. I'll be doing another fresh install of 98SE and trying my GPU's in XP to see if that all runs.

Thanks for everyones help, and installation suggestions for Win98SE would be greatly helpful!. Well the point of this system was to have Win98 so I can run a mix of DOS games and early windows titles. Perhaps I should have cleared that up. I have hardware that is better than this, and could run XP with a breeze. However, I choose this hardware (specifically under 512mb ram and a Sandblaster card) for classic dos games, such as Doom, Prince of Persia, Test Drive, and others that won't run in XP. Or might but are not being emulated properly. I gamed on a 486 for some of these PC's for a while, but it was a pain to get files on and off it without USB and the 486 I had obviously was too weak for some other titles I had. So I figured a high end P3, that still offered ISA slots for proper Ad-lib sounds and running Windows 98SE would be a perfect spot in the middle to run all the games I want both lower end, and higher end of the decade.

So im a bit stubborn as you say in wanting to run windows 98SE cause that's the whole point of this system. I have a Core 2 Quad that would work better for a XP gaming machine than this haha. Worst case scenario, I can dual boot the OS's, but id like it all to be in one environment. Then save tons of grief and test all titles in DosBox in the WinXP enviornment...you may be pleasantly suprised.Again Patio. most run in Dosbox. However, most do not receive the proper Ad-lib sounds from the games, or receive proper speeds. Therefore pushing older hardware might have a small advantage. Got it...

| |

Solve : Trying to Run Old .avi Files cvid codec not installed properly!? |
Answer»

Hello,

I'm paying Resident Evil Original successfully, however whenever I reach a .avi video cut scene the screen either freezes or goes black, i hear the audio and then then the game continues. I've have tried different iccvid.dll files as well and had no succes. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!I'm guessing you got a bad version of the DLL i.e. a custom written version or just a renamed DLL. Anyone can rename VIRUS.DLL to ICCVID.DLL

If you are sure it is corrent, you might be missing some required DLL files.
