My old computer is being pressed into service for the kids, and something went so wrong I decided to re-install windows 95 in an effort to fix it. The other option is to give the computer to the E-cycle station, but I have three kids and could really use another computer. Anyway, here is the thing. I have created a Windows 95 startup disk when I started this, and I have the Windows 95 CD-rom Setup Boot Disk and the Windows 95 CD. I am trying to rebuild the computer, but cannot get it to recognize or use the CD-rom to complete the install. I have copied down some info that I see on the dos screens and hope it will give some clues. The install wizard did get a little confused about halfway through as it couldn't find the path using the R drive and so I had it skip some files as I didn't realize it had re-mapped the drive to E somewhere along the process. Makes you wonder why Microsoft's install wizard is capable of correctly finding 95% of the stuff but can't find the rest. I didn't even think of downloading another boot disk because I had the original microsoft stuff, but really i should know better. I changed the display to 256 color because I am pretty sure the VGA card allows it, and then it needed to re-boot. When it came back it was just a black screen with green lines. I tried changing to the Acer monitor because I thought it might handle it, but it just gives me the black screen. So now I can't see anything to change back to 16 bit color, so I did a re-install again and customized it to use Acer 55 as the monitor as I couldn't find 54E on the list. I needed to hook up to the old monitor while doing this as I still get a black screen with the occaisional flicker on the Acer. Still nothing when I hook up the Acer, and when it re-boots at the end of the re-install I still get the black screen with green lines on the old monitor as well, presumable because the color display hasn't changed. I don't know how to change the display so it seems I am back to square one and need to re-install after formating the hard-drive again to wipe everything out. I know the Acer monitor works as I have been using it with the older computer just fine, but I don't know if the older computer's VGA card is good enough to handle more than 16 bit display, so I wanted to swap monitors. <br/><br/>Here is the real question! Does anyone know how I can find out what Video cards I am using and what monitors are setup on my computer, preferably in dos? Then perhaps I could change the settings. I did some digging and found references to ATI VGA Wonder and ATI Graphics Pro Turbo PCI (mach 64 Rage/GT) I went to ATI's website and found my hardware too old to download drivers, and that is when I twigged. I remembered seeing an ATI disk for something in the disk bin and pulled it out and installed drivers. I re-booted and now have 256 bit color. yeah. <br/><br/>Anyway, I tried to swap monitors again, still have a blank screen on the Acer, but at this point don't really care as both oldies are now running 256 bit color. When I turn the computer on, it goes through the initial boot phase then flashes a DOS message "Windows protection error. Your need to restart your computer." When I restart, it wants me to start in safe mode, which I do. It boots up okay, so I do a shut down - restart, which then opens Windows 98 in its regular mode and works fine thereafter.<br/><br/>However, whenever I shut down that computer -- even in standby -- it flashes the protection error message, and I have to go through the whole procedure again. I wouldn't worry about it, except that my elderly HP ScanJet 5100C is hooked up to that computer, and that item isn't supported for Windows XP, which is what I have on my laptop. I installed DKLite defrag on my WinME system and used it for many months. In the standard installation it coexists with the standard WinME defrag. If you access the defrag utility from the "tools" tab of the "properties" dialog of a logical disk, it serves up the DKLite utility. If you access the defrag utility from the Windows Start Menu, as in Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter, it serves up the standard WinME defrag.<br/><br/>I use a small 512 MB USB Flash Drive to port files back and forth. I also use floppy disks for diagnostic tools. I like to <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/keep-527902" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about KEEP">KEEP</a> them defragged for performance purposes. Since my flash drive is pretty full, I prefer to keep whatever space is available in a contiguous block at the end. DKLite did not do this for me and it does not support floppy drives (at least that's my recollection). Since I could never remember to defrag these from the "System Tools" submenu, I would always end up accessing the defrag utility twice before I got the right one. Because of the inconvenience to me I finally uninstalled DKLite.<br/><br/>That said, DKLite worked fine and is <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/much-249971" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about MUCH">MUCH</a> faster than the standard Win9x/ME defrag utilities. The defrag tools for WinXP (obviously not for Win9x/ME systems) also leave "available" cluster gaps in the file system. They defrag files and do a pretty good job of packing them tight, but they won't sacrifice performance (total defrag time) to do it. Nor should they.<br/><br/>I, like you, wondered whether a first pass by DKLite could quickly defrag files while a second pass by the standard Windows defrag (WinME in my case) would finish the job. The answer is yes, it does. But not that fast. Window defrag spends a lot of time sliding file cluster blocks up to close gaps. I should also add that since I defrag regularly, I didn't have a lot of tiny defragged file pieces to put <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/together-1421609" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about TOGETHER">TOGETHER</a>, so not the best test. While I believe it defragged all of the files, the result was not one contiguous block of allocated clusters followed by one contiguous block of free clusters. There were a handful of free cluster "gaps" (six or less) within the range of allocated clusters. Not a big deal, but Win98 and WinME tightly pack all allocated clusters into what appears to be a single contiguous block of allocated clusters followed by the remaining free clusters in a single contiguous block. Again not a big deal. DKLite is an excellent product and I will probably leave it on my system to maintain option of using it. It was removed earlier during a "spring cleaning" of my hard drive.<br/><br/>Any chance this thread could "... go softly into the night".</body></html>

F8 doesnt work.....That black screen with flashing white cursor usually means that no hard drive was found. I think maybe you need to go into the BIOS and get the hard disk recognised - it looks like something got reset when you added or removed the old hard drive. At this point you might be able to discern whether the BIOS has lost the hard drive settings and simply can not see the drive or if there is another issue. I don't remember the codes to do it but if you feel like doing some googling, look up how to use the recovery console to reinstall all the boot files. I don't remember what they are. :-( sorry but that'll save you from losing anything and anything getting messed up/apps not working, and drivers missing things like that. Give it a shot! it can't hurt since you won't lose anything doing it that way.. IF YOU DO do the repair, it will still do what I said but you'll have to redo your drivers most likely and reinstall some programs like antiviruses becase they wil be corrupt. You can try 800x600 or 1024x768, and 16-bit or 32-bit color. That should get you back to the way it looked before. If you can't choose any of these options in the video settings, then your video driver needs to be reinstalled or you're still in safe mode for some reason.First, try the resolution and color depth settings. If the screen is to large to see or access the apply button, simply press the A key. If this doesn't work, Boot to command prompt only (depress and hold the ctrl button while booting). At command prompt, type <strong>scanreg/fix</strong> and press enter. Afterward, a reboot will be required, but try to boot into normal mode. Sometimes it will try to stay at the low resolution but it should change easily in normal mode. Only I don't have a floppy drive, and I don't have anything in the CD drive.
