Solve : Win98 Safe Mode Help?

Answer»

Hello;
I am attempting to reload my OLD win98 2e OS due to a ongoing boot problem that has been occuring for some time now. Currently my pc will only start up in safe mode which there are various options such as -Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/Network Support, and a few others.....

Here's my problem. I have another PC on my home LAN which i would like to back up my data files to before wiping out my hard drive with the reinstall of the 98 OS. However, in Safe Mode my win 98 pc has no network connectivity so i can not access the hard drive (which i have previously been able to do under normal operations). I'm sure i need to load certain drivers, etc or kind of manually start the network devices in the safe mode in order to MAKE the connection.....I'm just not sure how to go about this.

Thanks for your help.

DaveM

...and you've tried booting the 98 machine with "Safe Mode with Networking" and it doesn't have the drivers loaded for the network card?

Another option is to pull the drive out of the problem machine, slave it to an existing one, pull the data you want off and reinstall the drive, format & reinstall 98.

Alan <>< Alan;
Thanks for the reply. LET me just say that when i select SafeMode w/Network support and WINDOWS boots up I go to winexplorer and in my folder search under networks I cant access my other PC, nor get email when I open outlook or connect to any web sites, yet my other pc (this one) has network connectivity.

The win98 pc was working fine Friday night (net work that is). I also have a flash/pen drive in the back USB port but it won't recognize that either. Thinking I could just cc on to this my data (not a lot 500 meg or so). The device mgr shows the "other port" and usb symbol but does not identify the sankisk item.

Your idea on removing hard drive was passed on to me by another online support person it's just I don't have the confidence (or may connection tools) to accomplish that so was trying to figure out how to get my lan connection working.

Solve : windows 98 first edition?

Answer»

I am running Windows 98 first edition. I installed a Belkin F5D5000 network card and attempted to load the drivers. I received the message this device would only be compatible with Windows 98 second edition. I removed the network card and anything associated with it. I did use the device manager to remove the card before I PHYSICALLY removed the card from the motherboard. I purchased a SMC1244TX-1 which is compatible with windows 98 first edition. I installed the card and booted up the computer and the hardware wizard detected the belkin card. I called Belkin and they had me remove anything associated with belkin from the registry. They assured me this would TAKE care of the problem, it did not.
I called Belkin again and they could not offer any help with this problem.
I have used different slots for the SMC card, however, the wizard continues to detect the Belkin card, even thought it has been removed.
I have used the add hardware to try to install the SMC card but it will not detect the card. The computer still thinks the Belkin in installed.
I called SMC and told them of the problem and they replaced the card with the thought that it might me defective. I installed the new card with the same results. Would anyone have an idea of what the problem is here? Are you saying that you removed the Belkin, and all it's Registry entires, and rebooted, and then SHUTDOWN and installed the SMC and Windows id's it as the Belkin? Please also explain how you installed the SMC card. Do you have a driver CD with it? That is what you should use. Your first sentence is exactly correct in what I did to remove the belkin card.
When I installed the smc card in the slot, I then rebooted the computer.
Upon booting up, the wizard that detects newly installed hardware detects the belkin card. I can't never get far enough along in the process to install the drivers from the cd for the smc card.
I have attempted to use the add new hardware tool to get the computer to detect the smc card, but it never detects the smc card.
It seem as if there is something still in memory from the belkin card
installation; until that is removed, an install of the smc card is not possible.
There must be some registry entries left. If you do not want to go hunting, you might try removing it USING Device manager, and remove the card and reboot, and then try reinstalling the card and see if Windows picks it up. If so, use the CD to install it.

Another alternative is to boot to a command prompt, at the A:/ prompt type scanreg /restore (notice space before /) and hit Enter. Then CHOOSE to restore a recent registry that was before your card install.

Solve : help with windows 98?

Answer»

YES Im still running with Windows 98! My problem began when trying to start windows I got a > WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR> restart computer, this error would keep comming up with each restart.
I started the comp in safe mode and following the STEP BY STEP CONFIRMATION and going through process of elimanation that when I bypassed > symtdi . vxd < the computer started normally.
Any ideas about this because I haven't a clue and really no NOTHING when it comes to computers. Do I/can I just keep doing this to get my computer to start?
thanks in advance for any help!Anytime I got vxderrors I had to reinstall windows 98.Lizzee - WELCOME to the CH forums.

Symtdi.vxd is reported to be used by one of the Symantec products such as Norton AV etc. Are you running, or have you uninstalled, any Symantec PRODUCT? This is going to sound stupid.. but how do I do that?
Do I have to uninstall 98 first? My comp came with 98 already installed although I do have the Win 98 disc...Yes I do have Norton AV and am always having problems with it...Yes, well there you are, typical Norton headache.

I know you will probably have subscribed to Norton but I recommend that you cut your losses and totally uninstall it. The uninstall instructions are here although they refer to Windows XP rather than 98, you will have to tailor them to suit 98. e.g. item 1 refers to ERUNT which will not backup the 98 registry as it is intended for New Tech systems.

But first you should download a suitable FREE antivirus program which you can install after getting rid of Norton. I suggest AVAST from here.

But then you might want to persevere with Norton - your call.

Good luck
It worked (so far so good) I uninstalled Nort'n & Symantec keys. ALSO installed Avast, so far so good with that too!
thank you all for your help it was much appriciated!
lizzeeYou're more than welcome.

Good to hear of your positive outcome.

Are you noticing a performance increase with Norton out of the way ? ?
Just curious.

Solve : Windows 98 issues when adding RAM?

Answer»

This Dell Dimension 8100 had Windows XP Home version. I made it dual boot with Windows 98 because one application that runs only in Windows 98 is needed. Machind worked OK as dual boot but Windows XP had issues , like runs slow, etc. I added 1 GB of Ram and Windows XP greatly improved. BUT, Windows 98 now won't start. Just continues saying "insufficient memory", and "remove utilities", etc., as another posting on this forum. I tried starting over, removed the 1 GB RAM, went back to the original 512M RAM. But now it occasionally won't display on the screen, or when it does, it still won't boot in Windows 98. Solve : How does one remove unused W98 from secondary disk on XP system??

Answer»

Have 1999 Micron PC (now P-III-550), originally with W98 and 13GB DRIVE single partition:

- Added a 60GB drive to use as XP Pro boot disk / primary drive after partitioning in roughly thirds. Original 13GB is now second disk.

- Did not remove W98 then but have never used it since (too unreliable)

- Added different graphics card and replaced CD-RW later so W98 will not likely boot.

- Have a recent full back up of the second disk

- Down to a few meg space on all partitions

- Looking for ways to get rid of the W98 system files from original drive without losing any of the original app support files that might have been put under "WINDOWS".

- Prefer to not wipe 13GB then move most everything back over.

This isn't a classic uninstall to me, but may be it is though W98 isn't "running".

Any IDEAS? Not clear on what you want to accomplish so i'll ask a few questions...

Is the XP drive the main HDD?
What do you mean when you say you need some system files from Win98 ?
Do you switch cables to boot to the Win98 drive ?
Anything on the Win98 drive has nothing to do with XP running properly so i would just format the whole drive and be done with it.

Personal data from there though should be backed up first...

There's no reason to move XP over to the 13G drive...use it for storage instead.Clarifications:

Per BULLETS 1 and 3, XP is on 60 GB HD and is active system.

Per bullet 7 I don't need W98 system files, just files that apps may have put in the windows area (if any).

Per bullet 3 I do not boot to W98, and because of hardware changes I doubt that I could if tried.

I know XP doesn't use W98 files and I could format 13GB (bullet 8 ) but I do not know which apps will be orphaned by restore of all but W98 system file areas from full back up.

13GB already stated as secondary (bullet 2). As indicated in bullet 6, I am low on space and want the W98 files I no longer use to be gone.

Anyone else have any ideas or advice on utilities?

That's alot of bullets...i'm still unclear on why you are worried about losing anything from that drive...
If it's a program it would need to be re-installed under XP anyways...
If there is data such as documents or photos just back them up and wipe the drive...When I installed XP on the 60GB, I do NOT recall reinstalling anything that was on the 13GB drive. I just had both drives connected and installed XP on the60GB and the apps that I have on the 13GB worked just fine.

I installed office 2002 for students to get Word 2002 on 60GB. Apps on 13GB include AOL, MS-works, and Word 97. Each Word runs independently, each with a different license string. other apps are there too, so they must be looking at the 13GB drive for data.

Solve : HELP, with WIN 98?

Answer»

Hello, Someone please help me. I decided to take a Compaq ArmadaE500 from a relative for my young daughter so she can play games and not ruin my computer. Except, I think I ruined hers! I have been trying to load a printer (HPv40) but it locked up mid download. Now I can't start it. I can start it but I always have to turn it off and then on, I get the check system disk error because I wasn't able to shut down properly. If you don't see any such message, google "how to enter BIOS".

Once you're in BIOS, select an option to "boot from floppy disc first", or words to that effect.

You should be able to boot from your Win98SE floppy now. Once you've got a DOS prompt, run the command "ATTRIB C:\*.* -H -R" (without the quotes) and then run the command "DIR C:\". This should reveal all the system files in the root directory of C. If any of the system files has a filename longer than the 8.3 DOS standard (possibly as a RESULT of virus activity), then assuming you can identify what the filenames are supposed to be, you can rename them MANUALLY and try rebooting (good luck).

Do the same for the Windows\System\ and Windows\System32\ directories.

If this doesn't work you may well have no alternative but a complete reformat and re-install. Solve : Windows98 SE?

Answer»

Hi everyone, I've been given an old notebook computer a really old one it's running Windows98SE, the guy who gave it to me said it had not been used for 18 months. the fist time i turned it on i got a the message Invalid Hibernation Partition/File...Run HDPREP did that NOTHING happened HDPREP doesn't exist. I put a music CD in, it didn't work,i went into device manager nothing wrong there went into the properties of the CD everythings OK there to, so i restarted the computer i then noticed the error message this driver is provided by Oak Technology Inc..OTI-91X ATAPI CD-ROM Device Driver, Rev D91XV352 (C) COPYRIGHT Oak Technology Inc 1987-1997-Device Name MSCD001 No Drives found aborting Installation..C:\ LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE/D:MSCD001 DEVICE DRIVER NOT FOUND MSCD001 NO VALID CDROM DEVICE DRIVERS SELECTED, i get this message even when i use the Windows98 boot disk, now it's been years since I've used DOS I've had to relearn it all over again i think I've tried everything, I've been in the Config & Autoexec this week more times than I've had hot dinners all year it still won't work I'm beginning to think it might be the CD-ROM itself but i have no way of testing it. Next i tried the USBs,the USB pendrive i have needs drivers to work in Windows98 I've got the drivers but guess where they are on the CD that came with the pendrive,my CD-ROM won't work! i downloaded some drivers for the USB supposed to work with 99.9 of USBs installed them put the pendrive in and hey presto it got recognised trouble is i can't copy from or to it it won't even play the music files that's on it,one error message tells me to see the administrator the other one tells me to put the original disk in I'm getting really fed up now. So now to the hard part the next time i start the notebook apart from the error messages about HDPREP and no CD-ROM drivers the last error message i get now is Error: An I/O subsystem driver failed to load Either a file in the .\iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt or the system is low on memory. I think you might be able to guess what i said when i saw that, well I've tried this - The maximum cache size is set by adding a "maxfilecache" line to the vcache section of System.ini. The following example shows what an entry in System.ini would look like to set the maximum cache size to 6MB: [vcache]
maxfilecache=6144 but guess what it didn't work and according to Microsoft this is not supposed to happen in 98 only 95. And Yes, it has worked previously.

The program I am trying to run is something I made, but I am SURE that the problem is not with my code because I have used it a lot of times before this happened.

Here is the config.sys:
Code: [Select]DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO
FILESHIGH=80
BUFFERSHIGH=40,4
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CPQIDECD.SYS /D:IDECD001
SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /P /E:2048
And here is the autoexec.bat:
Code: [Select]@IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE
C:\ESSAUDIO.COM -BLASTER
@ECHO OFFIf it's something you made there's no way we could offer help or guess at what it is without seeing it.
What is this thing you made...or how about some info.
You could have 1 eror in one line of code and well you get the idea...Here is some info about the program:

The program was made in Visual Basic 3.0. It is a program manager and has ICONS that will launch a specified program. I USE it instead of windows explorer. The program paths and the icon names are stored in an .ini FILE on drive C. I have used this for about 3 months with no problems and have not changed any of the code since then.

Here is what might have caused the problem:

I installed printer drivers for two new printers an HP LaserJet 1020 and a Epson photo RX620. I then installed firefox. The computer crashed wile using firefox so I turned it off manually. After all of this has been uninstalled my program still gives an out of memory error.

I have used some tools to monitor the memory but they all say there is about 50 MB free. That doesn't make sense because my program doesn't use that much.

Solve : I want to transfer a preinstalled XP to another computer that is running 98SE?

Solve : Windows 98SE help needed (virus / reinstall / things still not working properly)?

Answer»

Hi there,

First of all my apologies for the long post, but I really need your help. I am a novice to intermediate at best.

I use 98SE and have been for years now. I was using my PC and got a lock up, rebooted, and was asked for USER information and then cd key.

I typed that in, and got an explorer error when I got to the desktop followed by the screen freezing.

I reinstalled 98SE over the old version (full installation SINCE I don't know any other way) and managed to get to the desktop. HOWEVER, I noticed that SEVERAL non windows programs were no longer functioning and the add / remove programs list was completely empty. I tried installing some of the programs again and it said they were are already installed.

I tried looking for the updates (including I.E. 6 and O.E. 6) they weren't at the MS site so I used one called Softpedia autopatcher (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Auto-patcher-for-Windows-98SE.shtml)

When I installed the auto patcher and it gave me various missing dll messages (including several in the Catroot folder) but continued installing. Now IE and OE work fine but I still have several programs that don't, they aren't listed in the add / remove list so I can't remove them to reinstall them.

I also don't know what to do about these missing dll's and other files the patcher couldn't find.

I ran my anti virus and it found a couple of viruses. I really don't want to reformat and would prefer to find another option.

My question to you guys is should I either:

1) remove the patcher, INSTALL 98se over the old one again, add the patcher again and hope for the best

2) Try and find a way to add the missing dll's and other files that are missing.

3) I have another older PC with the 98SE on it. Could I take the missing files from that computer to the other one? (I don't know where to put them though).

Even my keyboard is not working right, the @ is where the " should be (and visa versa) and the hash mark doesn't work. I also seem to have an older version of word (instead of the usual Word 97 version), despite having updated everything.

Computer Stats:

98SE
40G Hard Drive
512 ram
512 Nvidia Graphics Card
Avast anti virus

Many thanks,
JoeDid you do a complete install or run the recovery CD that comes with Windows 98SE?I did the complete installation. I'd recommend CLEAN reinstall: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-install-Windows-98-t9803.html

Solve : Windows 98 installation?

Answer»

Hi there,

I searched the FAQ and the archive, but didn't find any satisfied answer so far.

So here's my problem:

i'm trying to INSTALL W98 on a relatively old PC for my 9 year old son. The CD burner loaded itself and is working OK.I came across the following website today: Advanced USB Trouble Shooting. As it's WRITTEN for Windows 9x/ME, it should come in handy for future troubleshooting.

Another good site (that you could disappear in for days) is: USBMan.

Since you successfully resolved your current USB issue, I'm sure you can handle it.Was the autopatcher from MSFN Forums ? ?
Otherwise known as the "Unofficial Win98 Service Pack"

I don't remember right off where I found this patch. I did see the unofficial version but I was afraid to use it. The Auto-Patch showed the 5 windows updates that I downloaded over the years from MS, so I used it. The CD burner works but now I have many other problems. I started a new software question about twunk 16 and vwin 32 errors. This thing is driving me crazy.

Solve : Still using Windows 98?

Answer»

I am a holdout Windows 98 user (800 MHz Pentium III processor, 256 MB RAM). After every new RELEASE of a Microsoft OS since then, I've heard each one has significant problems which kept me from getting a new system. My computer will be 8 years old in June, but now I'm having problems with the sound not functioning unless I re-boot several times - sometimes when I go to shut down I get blue screens saying I have fatal exception errors OE & OD and when I go to any Web sites that require Shockwave, that really upsets my system.

I've been shopping around for a new system and wanted some advice on what is a good brand to buy, what OS to get, RAM speed, memory, processor, etc. The choices are much more numerous than 8 years ago. Any advice appreciated. Thanks. Before we give you any recommendations...

What's your price range?

What will you be using the computer for?

Once we have that...we can make some recommendations to you.Probably not over $1000. Just basic computer use like word processing and spreadsheet database. Internet browsing with email access and online gaming (not high-end gaming, though).Your price range is well within the means of getting you a decent PC for what you'd like to do with it.

I'm not going to recommend any custom build information, because...based on your post, you'd probably want someone to recommend a specific brand...with some great specs, to satisfy the replacement of your currently outdated system.

If you're looking to get a decent PC for the price...there are several computer manufacturers you can go to: Dell, Gateway, HP...the list goes on and on.

One thing you may want to keep in mind, though, when looking at pre-builts: Always take into consideration the support you get from them. Most of the afore mentioned manufacturers outsource their support...so if you have a problem...and call them...you'll be speaking to someone who doesn't have a good grasp of the English language...and will sound like they're reading from a manual.

Another aspect is the operating system...do you want the latest Windows OS (Vista), or would you rather have XP? You could also look into a MAC, but if you want to keep the price LOW...then stick with a Windows based PC...and I would strongly recommend XP over Vista...any day. However, this will probably cause an argument here...and I'll just leave it at that.

I'd like you to take a look at a couple of websites I'm going to be sending your way...

This is what you should know about them: They are USA based manufacturers and their support is maintained in the USA...not India...if you catch my drift.

The two companies are: Micron PC and Systemax. Their computers are well built...reasonably priced...and supported here in the USA.

MPC has a desktop you can configure (E-2610) starting at about $600. Of course, you can configure it the way you'd like...but the standard specs should suit you just fine. The only thing I'd add is maybe a little more memory and a monitor of your choosing. Still within your price range.

Systemax also has some great desktops...the Venture H356 is reasonably priced...also configurable to your liking.

Again...I'd recommend Windows XP...minimum P4 processor, at least 1GB RAM, a decent size hard drive (at least 80GB), on-board video and sound is sufficient for what you have in mind...a DVD/RW or CD/RW, or a combo drive. The addition of a monitor will still keep you within your budget...and I'm more than positive you'll be quite happy with your purchase.

If I can be of any further assistance, please feel free.

All my best...Thanks for the advice and your detailed and honest reply. It just seems so much more complicated with more brands and more components than 8 years ago. Even the processor - Intel (Pentium or Celeron) or AMD (K6, Duron, Athlon or Thunderbird). I get dizzy thinking about it.Just keep in mind, what you're going to be using the computer for...or what you may intend to use it for in the future.

You'll want a computer that can handle any upgrades...and last you another 8 years.

...and you're welcome...

I certainly hope I was able to help without making it too confusing for you. It's really not that difficult, when it comes down to it.

Again, all my best...

Keep us posted as to what you decided to do...

BTW...if you decide to get an HP, Compaq, or eMachine from Walmart...DON"T...a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...I used to work for them...and I know how truck loaders and/or unloaders handle the merchandise.LOL. I hear ya about the "big box" store computers. I did look at the MPC ANS Systemax Web sites. Only Systemax is offering Windows XP that I could determine. What's the difference between XP Home and XP Pro? Which would be better for me in a home, non-business setting?windows xp pro version has more advanced features, such as better networking. If you can get XP professional over XP home, then go for it. i have personally have always used XP proQuote from: programming_pat on May 27, 2008, 06:21:21 AM

windows xp pro version has more advanced features, such as better networking. If you can get XP professional over XP home, then go for it. i have personally have always used XP pro

Assuming you can find a copy.

Note that the difference between Professional and Home are about $100 USD.

In Australia, Microsoft have cut all sales of all Windows OP's except Vista. I needed to borrow a friends Windows XP installation disk to re-format my compXP Pro is the better os, but in your case...XP Home Edition will suffice...It's not that difficult to find XP Pro.And the differences in the OS aren't HUGE.
