Solve : Win 98 vs Win XP?

Answer»

I can't install Windows 98 on my new computer!-erros when I want to acces all applications and other things- If I install XP it works very good. Please explain this to me! I don't use them both!
My computer: AMD Sempron 2600 , nVIDIA GeForce FX5200,256 MB RAM, 40GB.To dual boot '98 and XP you should install '98 on its own partition first and then install XP on a DIFFERENT partition.

To run them both you need 512 MB of RAM but more than 512 MB of RAM is difficult for '98 WITHOUT altering the Vcache settings, so you would be better off just using XP and fitting more RAM in the computer.Maybe my motherboard can't support win 98.You need to visit the MBoard manuf. SITE and GRAB the drivers for Win98...

Chances are your other components will need Win98 drivers as well.

patio. XP has a lot more drivers included in the OS. With '98 you may need to add drivers manually.

I would up the RAM to 512 MB, or more, and only use XP.

What are the rest of the hardware specifications like, drive speed partitioning, drive buffer, foramtting?

Was the drive partitioned with diskpart and formatted with the XP CDto HPFS/NTFS or was fdisk and format to FAT32 used?

Do you only use FULL formatting when preparing a drive? Quick formatting is only good for deleteing files really. As long as it is a X86 (Intel/AMD) family processor it should be supported..

WINIPCFG in the run box and click RELEASE.
4) Click on DISABLE network adapter from the SYSTEM properties on MY computer.Don't plug a cable in? If the adapter does not have the driver loaded that will do it. Also there is a spot under network connection to check a box to show the icon in the task bar.If you are using ZA for a firewall, just engage internet lock. It does exactly that - locks it down - nothing in and nothing out.thanks ya'll. knew about za but was hoping for an easy way to shut down the connection when i want to shut down all programs...but i can always just unplug it...reckon i ought to just put xp on....Hi,

Windows 98 has a very primative logg off function, but you are right, it wont close the network connection. Do you have any experience fixing computers or do you have a geeky friend?Maybe the hard-drive has minimal free-space.

'Warm up the Set' is a Radio, Radar or Television expression. As above, there are a lot of POSSIBLE causes. Some basic things to try:

- try another wall outlet for your power. Preferably in another room.

- try another power cord

- check the power-on button. It may be bad or the wiring is loose/intermittent.

- if there is a setting for voltage on the back of your PC (110/220) make sure it is correctly set for your area.

- hold the power button in for several seconds, if it is button. If it's a toggle switch, never MIND.

- make sure your PC power management configuration is correct. It may be in some sort of sleep/hibernation mode.

- there should be no 'warmup' time with your PC. If it behaves as such, then you may (also) have a bad power supply or intermittent connection on your main/motherboard.

All of this is guesswork without some knowledge of what you are using and how (PC/hardware models, changes made or problems when this occurred, etc.).

- does it always behave this way?
- when it finally works, is everything normal?
- any other info you think might be related?

DellMy money is on the PSU. Can a PSU take an hour to warm up? Fed aren't you the electrician here? I thought it was an all or nothing deal. Quote

Can a PSU take an hour to warm up? Fed aren't you the electrician here? When the computer is powered on, the internal power supply initializes. The power supply doesn’t immediately provide power to the rest of the computer. First, it determines whether it can supply the proper voltages that the computer’s components require. The power supply sends out a POWER GOOD signal when it determines that it can supply reliable power to the rest of the computer. When the chipset receives this signal, it issues a SYSTEM RESET signal to the processor.
2. When the processor receives the SYSTEM RESET signal, it accesses the jump address for the start of the BIOS boot program at its hard-wired preset address and loads it into RAM. The jump address contains the actual address of the BIOS boot program on the ROM BIOS chip. The jump address is typically located at address FFFF0 (hexadecimal) or 1,048,560 (decimal), which is at the end of the first megabyte of system memory.
3. With the primary part of the BIOS now loaded into RAM, the POST (Power On Self Test) process begins. If any fatal errors happen during the POST process, the appropriate error beep code sounds or sometimes an error message displays, and the boot process stops. At this point in the boot process only the system speaker can notify the user of errors.
4. If all is well, the boot sequence continues and the system BIOS loads the device BIOS of the video adapter and loads into memory. As your computer boots, the video adapter’s information displays on the monitor.

Needs a new Power Supply Unit.

Solve : Java Applet problem on Windows 98?

Answer»

If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it so much. I have a Compaq Presario, running Windows 98. My modem recently quit, and I had it repaired at a shop. Upon return, the computer would not let me play any on-line games. A screen came up that said, "applet not found." I DOWNLOADED java, and now the games will load (slowly) but freeze up. I have to manually shut the tower off, and re-start the computer, because even the mouse FREEZES....it also makes a weird, "chattering" noise when frozen. The shop checked it out and said nothing was wrong, even re-booted it for me. Still having the same problem. It is driving me crazy. Can anyone help? Thank you.So it works totally fine except when you are using Java to play these online games, or there are other issues?

Have ou got all of the Windows 98 updates? Did they reload the operating system? Just adding a modem is a simple thing and shouldn't have anything to do with Java implementationThanks for SPEEDY reply...yes, all other on-line experiences are great. It only freezes during an on-line game. It's very frustrating, as I paid for Pogo on AOL, and can't play anything. Also, EA games is no help. They keep saying to re-install Java...I did twice, and Java says it is working. Other than the game issue, I have no trouble at all. The repair shop I had it in says there is absolutely nothing wrong with the computer...so I am confused. All the shop said they did was install a new modem for me, and when I asked them to check out this problem with the games, they said they "REBOOTED" it. That's all they did, as far as I know.Did you uninstall the old Java first? That sometimes is required, rather than just installing a newer or different version. Give that a try from Add/Remove Programs in COntrol Panel.Yes, that was done. The new modem is the only one there. Sorry to be a pain.

Solve : Making boot CD for win98?

Answer»

I've written some batch files for my win98 unit which run in DOS. One makes copies of the registry files, several core system files, my core security apps and their configuration files, user startup folder, etc. The other batch file is called from autoexec.bat and overwrites these files and folders at reboot. It's basically a system restore that runs in DOS for the more vulnerable parts of my OS.
The whole thing works quite well but still has a degree of vulnerability with the backups, batch files, and bootup being on the hard drive. I'd like to move the whole thing to a CD and have my system boot from that CD. My burning software, Burnatonce, is supposed to be able to make bootable CDs but I haven't been able to make it work. I need the CD to use my autoexec.bat and config.sys files for the rest of my setup to work properly. Most of Bart's tools don't run on win98, so what would I use to do this? I'd prefer to not have to use a separate boot floppy if possible.
RickHerbalist:

I use Nero to burn bootable CDs and have not had any problems with the software:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Products.html

It is COMPATIBLE with Windows 98 SE:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero_7_Premium_System_Requirements.html

Best regards,
DocI see that the trial version of Nero is a 100+mb download. That's definitely a bit more than I can justify to make one bootable CD, especially when I'm on dialup. With win98, I'd never use most of its features. BingBurn and some of that other software looks like a possibility.
For right now, I am using a boot floppy and STARTING in DOS, calling the batch files from the CD. XP. Also your proessor is weak. In other words if you want to run XP replace you hard drive with a newer one also your processor or just BUY a new computer.I agree... Exactly how are you trying to install Win ME on the win 98 machine ?
Is the ME program one that came with a Dell machine by any chance ?

dl65Thanks for your responses.
The ME disks were not bought seperately... they came with our pc when we bought it. I thought because we are the original owner that I could take the ME disks and use them to upgrade our pc that runs windows 98. I didn't reformat hdd, just put the first cd into the cd rom drawer and began upgrading. It started to copy some files, then came up with the message that I stated in my earlier post.

Windows 98 is running fine on our Dell. Just thought I'd upgrade to ME.
Thanks for your help
Marlene

I agree with the others. Solve : Win95 lockup problem?

Answer»

I've got a small problem with Windows 95, on our old HP Pavilion 7285 200mhz PC. Windows 95 starts up normally, and runs very fast most of the time. But when I go into an MS-DOS game, and exit BACK to Windows, the screen freezes. Is there any fix for this? I tried using PC Doc Pro, but although it fixed registry errors, the problem still occurs. As of now I'm trying to avoid the problem by shutting down and going to MS-DOS before I attempt to use a DOS PROGRAM.Hey, Darth, I feel like we are old friends now.

Are any conflicts showing in Device manager/ Is this a reasonably fresh install? When you restart in DOS does everything work there as opposed to doing this as a DOS program under Windows/ Sometimes the latter can be problematic. If so, open Control Panel>System>Device Manager and remove the card. It will be there with a yellow "!" by the side of it. Now run that setup file.

If there is no setup file, but a .inf file, right click on the card in Device Mnager and select "Update Driver". Point it to the folder where the files are stored. That works! Thanks very much.

Would this setting be good to keep?
Thanks for your help,
John God
Agree with Backdated. It's safe to keep. Depending on the specs and age of your system, you might notice a very slight difference in system performance between different color settings. Your hardware has to work harder to display 16-bit color than 256 color and harder to display 32-bit than 16-bit or 256 color. On modern computers, the user may notice no difference in performance. If you notice that applications are slightly slower to be displayed on screen when you first open them or when you switch between open applications or that scrolling of web pages works slightly less smooth with the 32-bit setting than with LOWER settings, that's a clue to the performance issue.

And, you may not notice any difference between 16-bit and 32-bit color. My eyes can't see a difference on my monitors. Thanks for all your help. My system is about 6 years old. I do see a difference between 32-bit and 256-bit color.
JohnAs Soybean SAYS, if there is a noticeable performance hit, 16 bit colour is good enough for most applications. Thanks for the help.....
John.........

Solve : Upgrading Windows 98 to XP?

Answer»

I have a laptop that previously was used in a business by many users. As a consequence it is very SLOW and also has Windows 98 on it.

I have bought XP to put on it. I assumed that one of the things this would do would be to wipe the hard drive in installation thus speeding up the computer. Is this the case? If not how do I wipe clean the hard drive and then put XP on the computer?

I put the XP disc in and it ran automatically. It started to go through the usual screens and then it detected that NORTON anti virus was running. A message came up telling me that this needed to be disabled or removed for XP to load. I tried add/remove programs but it appears that I need a password in order to do this. Unfortunately when I was given the machine I was not given the password. Another unfortunate thing is that now that company has gone out of business and there is no one to contact.

A friend of mine suggested going into the BIOS and selecting the computer to boot DIRECTLY from the CD drive. I tried this and changed the list succesfully with the CD ROM appearing at the top of the list. On rebooting, however, a DOS screen came up with a blinking cursor and it LOOKED as thought the disk drive was spinning. It then seemed not to move forward with the XP boot but rather boot, as normal, onto the Windows 98 desktop.

I would be very grateful for anyone with the expertise and time to have a look at this issue and help me solve it. All I am looking for is to clean the hard drive and start again with a quick laptop using XP.

Thank you for taking the time to read this long entry.Your friend has the right idea, did you have the xp disk in the cdrom when you booted to it?Yes the XP disk was in the CD drive at the time. I do know that the XP disk works (used it on my desktop) and I know that the CD drive works alsoIs it a genuine full version of XP?im not an expert but maybe reformat the drive or if all else fails get a new hard drive?Do you know the hardware specs on that laptop? You might be disappointed if you do succeed in loading Win XP on it. It might not be as fast as you think.i would format the hdd, do you have the original win 98 boot setup disk/floppy. you might be able to format using that and then install win xp fresh. if not just fit a new hdd. Quote

I assumed that one of the things this would do would be to wipe the hard drive in installation thus speeding up the computer. Is this the case? If not how do I wipe clean the hard drive and then put XP on the computer?

That depends on which CD you own. If you own the upgrade CD, then you can only install XP if another operating system is currently installed. If you own the full version of XP, then Windows 98 is not necessary. Let us know which CD you have, and we'd be happy to walk you through this.

Flame Quote
If you own the upgrade CD, then you can only install XP if another operating system is currently installed.
Flame
Not quite true. You can install a clean version from an upgrade CD with no OS present. WinXP will ask you to insert an install CD from a previous and supported OS such as Win98 as proof of previous ownership.
If you don't have a 98 CD or similar, use Hijackthis or similar to stop NAV dead in it's tracks and reboot.

Upgrades are definitely not recommended!!!!

Solve : Problem 2 - DOS Prompt / Crashing - 98SE?

Answer»

This second problem is a bit more awkward to explain.
