Solve : Problems with downgrading back to Windows xp?

Answer»

I recently install Windows 7  but my computer was too old and had serveral issues so I tried reinstall windows XP. It let me reinstall it but  I think Windows 7 is STILL on there because my hard is 500 gb and its only show 125 gb left? How can this be?
I thought i had format the drive. Please help what can I do to get that those GBs back?
Also I have no problem wiping out my hard drive again and reinstall Windows XP if I have to do that.
Thanks
Boot to the XP CD. Delete and recreate the partition(s), format, install.Make sure you delete the partitions including the hidden Win7 Boot Manager partition (reserved partition for Win7 ~200MB).I have tried botting from XP CD and delete paritions but still only showing 125 GB. Also where can I find that Win7 boot Manager partition at?Oh it's Windows XP, i forgot another thing...
SP1 or SP2 can only recognize 125gb of hard drive space by default, UPGRADE to Service Pack 3!

Or do this:
1) Open Control Panel
2) Open Administrative Tools
3) Click Computer Management
4) Click Storage, then Disk Management
5) You should see if there's other partition to remove here including the Win7 Boot if not already removed.
6) Then you will see your C: Partition, right click on it and click Extend Volume.
7) Then you will see the rest of the unallocated space, extend your C: Partition to the full hard drive capacity.
Then click finish, and allow it to extend your C: drive.Thank you so much.I got it to work not if only can get my resolution to STOP messing up. Quote from: tiger2182 on April 04, 2010, 05:56:57 PM

Thank you so much.I got it to work not if only can get my resolution to stop messing up.
You need all the WinXP drivers for your computer. After install XP you need to install the correct chipset driver followed by all other hw drives (video card, SOUND card, etc).

Solve : Computer Beeping while playing games in IE?

Answer»

my kids will be playing a simple game while using IE and the computer will start to Beep-Beep-Beep-Beep internally.  Not sure where it is coming from, the Mobo or a video source.  As soon as we close the game window the beeping stops.  We open another BROWSER window, play for awhile and the beeping starts again.  This does not happen everytime we get on these game sites, but has happened with some frequency. That may be a HEAT alarm...
Does any other activity create this CONDITION ? ?

DLoad and install SpeedFan and post your temps here...no...nothing else causes this to happen.
Do you have your Owners Manual ? ?
yes, I KEPT EVERYTHING after building the machine about 3 years ago

Solve : Missing SOFTWARE log file?

Answer»

I've got this issue that i can't solve.
At first, i couldn't boot my PC, as it said that the SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE file is EITHER MISSING or corrupt.
I installed another windows XP on my second drive, but i can't access my files since they're LOCKED, so i can't copy them to a safe place. Since I don't want to lose my files, i have to repair my MAIN windows.
I've tried using the recovery console, but now i get an error:

STOP: C0000218 {REGISTRY File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable.

I copied the SOFTWARE file from the CD (with the repair console), and now i get this bluescreen. any help?

Solve : Display goes blank after Windows welcome screen in XP?

Answer»

I have a system which I had to reload my XP Prof. and when I boot up the system, everything looks normal on boot except after the welcome screen, the display GOES blank.  The power LIGHT on the monitor starts blinking and the indicator light on the tower is still running.  I can boot in safe mode and it seems to work fine, so I eliminated bad monitor or driver.  Any help would be appreciated...Actually if it works in safemode you haven't eliminated the driver...you've proved it IS the driver.
Do NOT use Windows update to update the driver...grab a fresh 1 from the manuf. site...He posted very same question on 764 forums: http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&newwindow=1&safe=off&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUS299&q=geno368+welcome+screen&tbs=&lr=&as_filetype=&btnG=Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=Guess he didn't listen to that advice either...Broni, I don't know how you counted 764 posts...lol...I only put it into 6.  I use several at a TIME because I don't always GET an answer.  I usually donate to the active help forums to help defray costs, so...give me a break please...Did you install the chipset driver immediately after reinstalling the OS? After that, follow patio's advice and download and install the correct drivers for your video card, display, and audio card from the OEM web sites. That is what I didn't do...I thought the driver was in the bios...I went to the mfg. site and updated the driver, and now all is well.
Thanks for the replies and the helpYou're most welcome.

Solve : Re-Virtual Memory?

Answer»

There are times my computer WOULD work fine and then SUDDENLY an error message SAYING my virtual memory is low,is this could be because I am running several video programs.have you set up the paging FILE properly?

i don't know if the problem is the same as what i went through, but it could possibly be a permissions problem, try resetting permissions to all folders if it's not inconvenient.

if that doesn't work then i have no clue. i can only share what i have experienced.

good luck.More info would be helpful...How much physical memory do you have installed?

Solve : I broke my everything.?

Answer»

I know what I did, but then it GOT worse and I probably made it worse.
First I re-wrote my boot.ini (I believe) with a program called "Style XP"  to change my boot up screen. I rebooted it to see it in action and my computer wouldn't boot back up.

I can't reset most times any other way than a hard POWER supply boot because it stays "on" but wont beep and turn my monitor back on. Just humming away with nothing to show me, like a zombie.  I have plenty of power.

All sorts of errors happened before it completely lost it's mind. Let me try to recall most of the combinations.

I hard boot/reset:
It beeps, it shows the Asus screen.. Forever.
Beeps, normal IDE screen, then it dies.
Beeps, normal IDE screen, then it reboots.
Beep Beep Beep.. Forever, physically normal but nothing on the monitor.

Safe mode (assuming it makes it past the first screens):
F8, safe mode, shows a driver list,  freeze forever on that list.
Driver list, goes black and my monitor loses connection.
Driver list, enter.. It loaded once but there was no start menu.

Reinstall attempt (again assuming it passes the first fail list):
Runs normal to "run from disk" and goes black while scanning windows files.
Runs normal, reformatted, copied files, said preparing reboot and rebooted to nothingness, my computer humming, my monitor black and then it turned off as it does with no signal.

Now:
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP ('til I kill it) if I take out my RAMS and nothingness (fans running fine) or..
Doesn't beep, black screen.. same thing over the last few times. The normal grumling and rumbling inside the case is sometimes there at the very start, not always though.

The hardware seems fine. Could I be THAT unlucky that I broke XP and my HDD in one day? I don't even know what I could do!

All this indicates a "bad" IDE device.  CHECK the cables, then remove one device at time until you isolate the OFFENDER.  You can also disconnect them all and see if you can enter the BIOS, then reconnect one at time until you find the offender.

Forgot to ask:  is this a laptop?
No it is not a laptop. It is just my better than Pent1 computer.
It isn't hooked up to much, just 1 hard drive, motherboard, power supply and CD drive. Also a vid card, modem and I think that's all.
I can't get to BIOS (not that I know how to us it) because now it just hums like it's on but shows nothing. :/
Is it possible it can only be fixed with a hammer now?Disconnect the IDE cable to the hard drive, put a bootable CD in the CD-drive and see if it will boot.  You may have to change the boot order in the BIOS, but with only a CD, it should boot.Ok so I DISCONNECTED the power supply from the hard drive and the flat cord cause I couldn't remember which you said and no beep and no screens, it just turns on and hums all brainless. This is making me think I broke my hard drive. But why is it not even showing my motherboard information anymore?!?!
I can buy a replacement part, not 1000 of the wrong ones, and my head already hurts.

Thank you for being patient with me.Sorry to double post but I still need help on what part I MOST likely need. I wont be mad if someone is wrong, I just can't go all willy-nilly buying parts lol Quote from: Erinlove on April 10, 2010, 06:39:34 PM

Disconnect the IDE cable to the hard drive (which you did), put a bootable CD in the CD-drive (which you did not) and see if it will boot.  You may have to change the boot order in the BIOS (you did not do this either), but with only a CD, it should boot.

Solve : question about XP Home, operating system disk's?

Answer»

Does a OEM holographic XP Home SP1 disk contain the EXACT same information as a HP Operating System Disk  (that would come in the set of Hewlit Packard's system recovery disk's) , that is labled XP Home SP1.

I wondered if the HP disk maybe, was not as complete, file wise, as the OEM disk.

Just curious. No, Recovery CD's are different and only applicable to a particular computer.  They are complete, but only for that computer.  Maybe more complete, since they contain the proper drivers.well, I have seen the HP disk be used as a stand alone ( not the extra bloat added) reinstall of the OS, the drivers were on seperate disks. And another disk with Norton , Adobe, etc.  On a raw hard drive it booted and installed just like a Microsoft disk.

The product key on the case was used, all activated fine. Runs fine.

I NOTICED, when you click the green start BUTTON, the menu box rises, there did not seem to be as many programs on the right side  (from My Documents on down) , or what ever you would call them, LISTED there, as in mine, which was loaded with a holographic OEM disk.

That just MADE me wonder about the files on both disks, or lack of.

Solve : WindowsXP drivers needed.?

Answer»

Currently the Dell website is not taking any NEW POST until tomorrow so I thought maybe I can get some help here.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop (old) that had Windows98 first edition and I INSTALLED XP today. The only issue I have now is I need what ever drivers are required to make everything else work like it did with 98. Sound, 1 USB port, mouse, etc. I know the info must be on the net somewhere but being a newbie at this I don't know where to look. I do have the drivers for 98 and disc. Will they help me?

Thanks,
Gary Dells are finicky about drivers....wait til morning and grab them frpm the Dell site...
BTW the Dell site loads fine from here...This is what I need that is showing in devise manager. In the sound, video and game controllers there is a yellow circle with an exclaimation mark next to Crystal WDM Audio Codec and in Ports the same for Communication Port (COM1).

Also, there is one USB port on the back. How can I get this to work so I can use wireless?

ThanksI only see drivers for 98 not XP on there site.....

Do you have a page where there offer the XP drivers?

If it doesn't list XP drivers chances are they never wrote them for XP for this machine...With the help of forum member EEVIAC my laptop is working with XP. I have sound and the USB port is working. I just had to go into the BIOS and enable the devices.

Solve : A doubt in context to 'Defragmentation' of Hard drive!?

Answer»

Hello There!

I read somewhere, that before defragging the Hard-drive, Antivirus or any Security program for that matter should be snoozed!?

How valid is this suggestion? How does the 'Real-time' monitoring of Security app. interfere with De fragmentation process?  "Real time" monitoring by antivirus programs involves scanning the hard drive, which means moving the read/write heads. Defragmenter programs work by reading data from one place on a hard drive and writing it to another place so therefore they are competing for control of the read/write heads which makes defragmentation takes longer.

Also, software wise, as long as the AV programs are open they have Change Notification handles open on the volume, which may give the defragmentor greater difficulty. While the above posts are correct, I have NEVER disabled anything before defragging and there is no real reason for you to do so either. Thanks for this clarification Guys!

I would now prefer to snooze my Avast before going for Defrag or Optimize of Hard-drive!

Afterall, my Sys. config. dates back to year 2002 & I would not like its further wear & TEAR, knowingly!

Thumbs up! Are the same facts also applicable for other Items running in the Taskbar like RAMBOOSTER or Launchy?

Should I 'Right Click' to exit these all till Defrag/Optimization completes?

Also, what if I use a 'Stand-by' Anti-Malware utility to SCAN my PC occasionally(say Malwarebytes AntiMalware)? Should I SNOOZE my active & main ARMOR Security app.(Avast in my case) till the former finishes with its scan?

I believe that at this occasion both utilities will still vie for their share?

What's the advise? Un-install RamBooster...

That would be a GOOD start.

Solve : Compute crashed.... Help to recover harddrive files... virus????

Answer»

My COMPUTER crashed.  It went right back so it looked the second you take it out of the box when it was NEW... register with gateway, set up internet, install programs, etc.

The sad THING is I wasn't the ONE using it when it happened so, I really don't know what happened.

I tried to go back to a restore point but there isn't any.

I've got the computer up and running.  Internet is back on.

My question is:  How do I recover what I had on there before?  Can I recover things I had saved like Microsoft word or excel documents?  Can I recover pictures or other files?

Any help is greatly appreciated!  Thank You.

It's unclear what you have done...but if the CD or hidden recovery partition were used to revert back to Day One status then your data is gone...SORRY I am unclear.  I really don't know what happened either. I did not use the CD to start again... the computer just kind of did that on its own.  Basically the computer is back to square one.

I was just hoping to recover files on the harddrive.  I ran Pandora recovery and got a few photos back but nothing else.

Thank you for your help.

Solve : Usb and printer problems?

Answer»

My USB Port does not recognize my printer. I can plug anything else into the same port and it isn't a problem. I am also having trouble with the printer download. I had to down load the driver  and it isn't showing up on my add remove programs. The couple of things that is showing up there  is telling me I can't remove it, one SAYS something about a virtual library and the other says something about just-in-time debugging. The printer is an HP Officejet all-in-one. I am at my wits end on how to fix this problem. What OS r u using Win XP, Vista, Win7? also model of printer, besides the ALL n One it should state a model number.Windows XP PROFESSIONAL. The printer is a HP Officejet J4540 all in one. The numbers on the back are CN887881GJ CB780A [32]. It was given to me with no driver. Having serious problems with downloading the driver because I can't completely remove the programs from the previous printer that was on here. When I try to remove it out of add/remove program I get error msg's saying something about Just-In-Time debugging, and something about visual library. I just BOUGHT this computer second hand. I was able to download the driver on my OLD pc and the printer worked fine, but that pc crashed. Also mu USB port gives me an error msg. When the error COMES up I click on it and it brings up a list of USB ports and the one the printer is plugged into says unknown device. Lets start by doing a few simple troubleshooting steps:
1- check disk.
G0>My Computer icon>double click>right click the C:\>tools>select check disk and select both options. Reboot, this will take about 30 to 45 mins.

2-Follow this link:
http://www.ccleaner.com/
This a program that will clean the Registry and remove programs. Read the instruction before using.

3- By now u should have a pretty clean hard drive (HDD). Uninstall all printer drivers. To play it safe after removing drivers reboot. Hey, this is Windows what can I say.

4-Download the latest and greatest drivers from the manufacture web site and install.

I will do one more check disk and Defrag the HDD.
Write back and lets us known the outcome.

Solve : Simple batch file help?!?

Answer»

This doesn't work correctly:

echo off
dir /B *.txt
set X=%1
set Y=%2
echo %X%
echo %Y%
pause > nul

It can't "set" this way so of course it won't "echo". But how do i get it to "set" X equal to the first file that it displays, and Y to the second file it displays?

I know this is simple but i fail to know exactly how to use "for" which is what i think is needed, but I'm not sure.echo off
dir /B *.txt

set %Y%=%2
echo %X%

The format i have is correct:
set A=1
set B=2
set C=3
echo %a%+%b%=%c%

The COMMANDS i have are not wrong, they simply don't work in the way i have them.bump

also. let me re articulate the BANE of my week.

echo off
dir /B *.txt
pause > nul

this lists the text file names in the current directory

(Assuming there are 2 txt files in the directory) What i want is so that the first file listed is "set" to something, and the second file is "set" to something else.

help appreciated and desperately needed.  As you are desperate here's an untested script, hope it helps:

Code: [Select]echo off
cls
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion

for /f "tokens=*" %%1 in ('dir /b *.txt') do (

Solve : Windows XP OS issue-Won't boot?

Answer»

Working on someones computer, and not sure if they have virus or what the issue is.  When i hit power button, it TURNS on, comes up with Emachine logo (hate emachine anyway lol), Says didnt shut down correctly and asked if i want to start normally, safe mode ect. and if i hit any if just goes black. I used recovery disk to install xp on one of my HD and it works, i got IMPORTANT files of comp, (scanning them now with AVG), and now other HD does same thing when it did work.

Any
Ideas? Try this:
U could also try fixing the present Win. Boot from the Win CD and do like if u were going to a install. DO NOT USE THE REFORMAT OPTION. Just follow instructions and it will GET to a fix this install option. Choose this option and like it run. It will take about 30 mins for this fix. Write back and let us know?
PS do not use the manufacturers (emachine) CD. It has to be a Win CD SP2 or SP3. I believe that the XP on recovery is sp1. either way, i dont have a windows install disk :-( any ideas on how to get a cheap/free one

I can still get installation key or whateverBorrow one...the vr
ersions need to match...as has been mentioned.Downloading .ISO of installation disk

Solve : Unwanted oversized Icon ??

6 yr OLD Dell DIMENSION w/1.5G ram and freshly defragged and devirused and running GOOD until.   Wanted an icon for  MySpace on desktop, easy button right!

Restart still there. Virus scan nothing.  Remove programs nothing listed.  Clk on it anywhere nothing.  It says " Fish Isle" with a picture of an island and words "I've got you on the SUNNY" there is one more word but is offscreen.  Google says Fish Isle is a game.  Ran "Wise Registry Cleaner" still there.  It sits on top of my desktop background similar to the way an icon does.  Cannot drag it or it would be in the TRASH!  New here and fairly green so thanks yall.   R CRight-click most anywhere on desktop (not icons or "Fish Isle").  Select Properties, select Desktop Tab.  It probably says : "Fish Isle" desktop.  Select something else. Thanks for the reply.  It is not listed there.  It is now set on "Azul" and we have that in place.  This Fish Isle thing sits on top of it like an oversized icon.screenshot?Have you tried doing a system restore yet?

Solve : Computer is down the tubes?

Answer»

(I wasn't sure where to put this.)
My computer is constantly getting blue screens that have a bunch of white text on the monitor, ending with something about physical memory dump. Aside from that, I have also experienced RARE problems with the computer freezing up. Also, I have more recently been getting in problems in the middle of playing a game where the screen goes blue and has a bunch of messed up white LINES GOING ACROSS the screen. Aside from that, sometimes a "No Signal" sign pops up and my monitor fails to work.
Also, I get a rare occasion that the computer gives me beep signals.
Does anyone have any recommendations for what I should do?
I have scanned my computer with AT&T McAfee Security Suite before, and it found nothing. Quote

Just about every blue screen has a Stop Code which gives lotsa clues as to the cause of a problem.

Solve : command line to get time with 0?

Answer»

Hi,
i use a 24 hours time clock under my windows OS.
if i use a command line like the following ones:
Code: [Select]set t=%time%
set tm=%t:~0,2%%t:~3,2%%t:~6,2%

and time is 09:52:38 in the morning, the %t% will be equal to " 9:52:38".
instead of that i would like to get "09:52:38", so the hours with a 0 in front of them.

how can i do that ?
thanks a lot,

A.1. Use string replacement to change all spaces in %tm% to zeroes. In fact there will only ever be one space, at the start, when the hour is 0 to 9.

Code: [Select]echo off
set t=%time%
set tm=%t:~0,2%%t:~3,2%%t:~6,2%
set tmzero=%tm: =0%
echo      t = "%t%"
echo     tm = "%tm%"
echo tmzero = "%tmzero%"
Output...

Code: [Select]     t = " 8:32:14.07"
    tm = " 83214"
tmzero = "083214"
Alternatively...

2. Maybe you prefer to test if the FIRST character (offset 0) of %tm% is a space, and if it is, make a new string composed of a zero character and the characters of %tm% from position 2 (offset 1) to the end

Code: [Select]echo off
set t=%time%
set tm=%t:~0,2%%t:~3,2%%t:~6,2%
if "%tm:~0,1%"==" " set tmzero=0%tm:~1%
echo      t = "%t%"
echo     tm = "%tm%"
echo tmzero = "%tmzero%"

Output...

Code: [Select]     t = " 8:41:39.75"
    tm = " 84139"
tmzero = "084139"

it should be "do it in another hassle free way" thanks to everybody. i was not sure that adding a 0 before was allowed.
As i use this command line in a script i do not want to use any gnu_date. Moreover vbs script are not allowed in my company...due to security reason :-)

so i'm trying to have a clear and simple script in command line.

Solve : Problem with shutting down: stalls?

Answer»

Hello: I use Windows XP power pack 2. For the past week or so I've been having a problem where when I want to shut down or go to the "stand by" I do this: click start, then click on the red circle"Turn off computer" then the hourglass figure appears (meaning wait) and I wait and wait but nothing happens. Eventually the computer goes into screen saver mode and the poor computer can never shut down.  When I want to shut down, I have to push the power button on the computer box itself, which I'm sure is bad for computers.
Even if, for example, I download a program or something and get the message "you have to restart for this to take effect" the computer can't seem to restart itself.
I've been over on the malware boards but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong there. I did look up this problem in the archives and there was some talk of maybe there being programs that take longer than the computer to shut down, but I try shutting everything else down and sometimes still it doesn't work. Plus, the whole thing is that I want to be able to keep the files I'm using and some of the sites up and going while I put the computer on stand by. I used to be able to do this but can't any more.
I'd appreciate any HELP you can give
Thanks

Dr. D.It will probably be an issue under your background services, check run > services.msc. Drivers like Nvidia Service Helper, etc, sometimes can hang on some systems and need to be removed, fixed, updated or re-installed.

Seems like your already tried it, but close off the background programs on your task manager before shutting down to see if one of them is the issue.

Disable power management, it's can screw up with some motherboards, your BIOS may have one setting and stupid windows has another causing a lock up (duel sleep mode they don't wake from). Go to the Control Panel, click on “Performance and Maintenance,” and choose Power Options.  Set them to 'Always On' for testing. Also disable any screen savers, these can cause issues with hanging programs too. Simply switching the screen off and Windows + L to lock if you wish.

Power settings on some devices have been known to fail on the shutdown. Software or the driver tell the device to shutdown first and waits, but it never completes the task. If you have a printer, scanner, or ipod attached, etc, you might want to disconnect it for testing.

Next time you need to force shutdown, just click Start-->Run and type "shutdown -f -s -t 0" (without the quotes - the last character is a zero) and hit Enter. Your PC will shutdown immediately. It's a bit safer than the power button.

To speed up the 'waiting time' for your shutdown:
Start Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
Click on the "Control" Folder.
Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it to a value lower than 2000, say 1000 as a test.
You should give it at least some time to save work.

Highly recommend you get Service Pack 3 for WinXP, it's much more stable, secure, faster and might also FIX your windows files causing the shutdown issue.

Microsoft Troubleshooting:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308029/en-usHello Azzaboi: That's a lot of information for a newbie like me. I guess I'll try them one by one, starting with the Service 3 pack. I'll let you know what works, just for the record.

Thanks!

Dr. D.I checked the run services.msc and got a list of things but I really don't know what to do with that list. How can I tell from that what the problem is?

Dr.D.Have you tried Service Pack 3 with no luck?

For the services, I would leave them as a last option, specially if you are unsure what is what. It is powerful to reduce the OS footprint and speed up the system without any unneccessary background services that you don't use and can be used to kill off unwanted/unstable services added by other applications as well (which might be the problem). However, you can also kill off the entire OS or a component you need if not careful.

BlackViper might help clear some of it up: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
Right now I'm going through the Service pack 3 process. Microsoft keeps sending me from site to site and various Pre-uploads, version validation, etc.  So we're not there yet, but I'm working on it!

Thanks

I'll keep you posted.

Dr.D.Microsoft says that I dont have a valid copy of Windows. Now I can't see how to download the Service Pack 3. Any suggestions?

Thank you

Dr DEither get a valid copy of windows, heh, or use a STUDENT key if you must...

Download the service pack 3 from here -
Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4

That way you have a full copy and can burn to disc, etc, for backup purposes and use again when needed. It might still validate your windows.

Solve : Very slow start up after minor hardware change -?

Answer»

I have a home built computer - I keep it physically clean and dust free and debugged and virus clean using Trend Micro IE 2010. I also use SpyBot but only manually. I don't have the immunize functions running. Also use XsftSpySE.
Using XP Pro with latest (as far as I know) updates including SP 3.
I have an AMD 86 family dual core 2.2 Ghz processor, Asus A8N-SLI Premium mother board. BFG GeForce 6800 graphics card.

I just traded out a Rosewill wireless adapter for an MSI adapter with a few more features than the Rosewill. They both look physically alike and I used the same slot. Changed so I could use the old adapter on another machine.
I turned the computer off. Disconnected the old adapter. Turned the computer on and then removed the software for the old adapter. Rebooted. Turned it off again and installed the new adapter. Because I walked away from the computer I did not note when the restart slow down began  .
When I restarted the computer to install the new software I noted at that time that it took a very long time for the computer to start. Going to the welcome PAGE did not seem to TAKE much longer. But once I typed in my password and went to the second start up screen it took a very long time for everything to arrive on screen and able to use. I installed the new software and got the new adapter working fine.
But restarts CONTINUE to be very slow after signing in. Takes about ten minutes or more. Once everything is on screen it all seems to work OK. But the start up time is horrible and new -
What do I need to do?? Hope you can help!
ThanksWhat model MSI adapter?

Have you tried to uninstall the MSI adapter and put the old one back in?

I FIXED IT!
After laboring with it all day I discovered that the WHOLE problem was Trend Micro Internet Security 2010. When I first began using TM products about 5 years ago they were wonderful. At least for my computer and the way I use it - it's become too intrusive.
It all of a SUDDEN gave me the message:  "Unauthorized change request Service shut down" .  After several attempts at uninstalling and reloading I only to end up with only slightly improved speed. So I just downloaded the Microsoft free Security essentials and am going to hope that provides adequate protection. I'm also going to load SpyBot Search and destroy.
The computer runs like new - start up is nearly instant.
I did try going back to no wireless adapter and cleaning out all of its software - no difference. I downloaded a registry cleaner - found lots of problems and fixed them - no improvement. Then I discovered the TM virus program glitch. Uninstalled the whole darned thing and bingo - no more problems.
Hope this helps.
Recommendations on good anti-virus solutions will be gratefully accepted - -

Solve : Prevent users from printing in color?

Answer»

I work at a school district and have several HP Color LaserJet CP2025 PRINTERS throughout the district. Student computers are set up to print in grayscale by default, but of course there are some students who are savvy enough to change the setting to print in color and then they END up wasting all the color.

It seems like it should be possible to prevent this from happening by using the "Security" tab of the printer properties, but after tinkering around with it, I haven't had success.

The other possibility is installing a monochrome driver for it, but HP doesn't offer a monochrome driver for that model on their website.

Teachers print to these same printers and need to be able to print in color.

What would you do in this situation? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!Hello
There r a few options to work with:
1- MS makes a program call Steady State. I will INCLUDE a link. We use it at work with very little problems. This works well if u can clone the HDD. If u do not have a cloner, there r SW like Ghost to create one Master image. Then just INSTALL the on each PC. This might be time CONSUMING depending on how many PCs are operational.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx

2-If the PCs r in a network environment u could set permission levels/groups to separate students from teachers. This way the students can not change any settings.

3- Have one dedicated printer to where the students can print too. U will have to set a printer at each location (maybe a room). this will require u to set up a student account on each PC.

At this stage there r no short cuts for a quick fix, a  non time consuming fix. Your best bet would be option #2.
Write back and let us know.   Thanks for your help! Those were great suggestions.

I ended up using the "HP LaserJet P2015 Series PCL 6" driver, which is compatible with the HP Color LaserJet CP2025 but doesn't offer the option to print in color, which is exactly what I needed.

Solve : Problem with maximizing windows?

Answer»

Let me start by saying, I am a Mac user at home and at school, and as it has been some time since I've been a predominantly Windows user, I feel hopeless. I am on our computer at work (night shift hotel worker, nothing else to do but go on line ), and our computer is a Dell, using Windows XP and Internet Explorer. The problem is with the resizing of the windows.. whenever I hit the maximize button, the address bar portion of the screen GOES off the top and I can't get it to re SIZE or anything. I can re size it to fit the screen whenever it is not maximized, which is fine, but I'd like to get this problem fixed because I am not the only one using this computer. It bothers me because I am so used to hitting the maximize button and it just fitting to screen, so it's been kind of a bother trying to keep from doing it. If anyone knows a way to fix this, I will FOREVER be INDEBTED to you!
ps: not sure if this helps, but it is not only the internet that does this, but all of the windows.  Thanks to anyone who can help!Have you tried a different screen resolution ? ?
Right clik an empty area of the desktop...select Properties and try a few different settings...
NOTE: Font sizes will also affect this.Okay, that worked.. you are amazing! QUESTION though, we have a sort of oversized monitor, kind of like a widescreen.. and when I changed the resolution it said that it was not the optimum resolution & suggestted what he had previously.. but when it is that setting is when we have the problem.. So I guess my question is- is the "optimum setting" assuming we have a normal sized monitor? There are usually control buttons and settings on the monitor that control screen size, height, width, etc.  You might play around with those also.Ahh lovely! That is what it was.. I was wondering, because when I redid the pixels it kind of made the text look funny, so I found a setting on the monitor that said auto adjust, and set the resolution back to "optimun" & hit that & all is well! Thank you very much!Glad to hear you are all fixed up...Welcome Aboard...and stop by anytime.Okay! I really appreciated the fast & accurate responses, thanks again!

Solve : Safeboot goes to blank screen?

Answer»

Here’s my problem… I was trying to BOOT in safe mode and marked the /SAFEBOOT box in System Configuration Utility and rebooted and now it just goes to a blank screen, like its dead.

I have Windows XP and when I F8 and do get to the safe mode options and hit enter, it lists a bunch of lines like this:
Multi (0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\fltmgr.sys

I don't have the discs that came with the computer, by the way.

Please help, if you can, thanks!
So safemode will not load fully EITHER ? ?
I'm afraid you are gonna need an XP CD to repair this...When you press F8 and get to the Advanced Boot options screen, have you tried: Last Known Good Configuration? When I try last good configuration, it still just goes to the blank screen. From there, I can't do anything at all. I'm using my laptop to post these.

Well, then I guess patio hit the nail on the head - you need an XP CD to proceed.Thank you for the advice. Bad thing though, even if I did have my discs, my disc drive hasn't worked for a long time, so I guess I'm screwed.

Either one of you know how I can get to the DOS command prompt and maybe I can change the BOOT.INI thing that I clicked to begin with? Not without a cd drive.1.  If the system was working fine before you attempted "Safe Mode" boot through System Configuration utility, your problem is with the "read-only", "hidden", "system" file "boot.ini".

The "boot.ini" file is located in the root directory "C:\".

2.  You need an operating system that can access that file system (FAT, FAT32, or NTFS?) with read/write access.  Options include:
     a.  Windows XP Setup CD (using Recovery Console to repair)
     b.  Windows XP Setup Disks (Floppy) (using Recovery Console to repair)
     c.  "Slave" the hard drive to a working computer with file system access.
     d.  Boot to Live CD (operating system with appropriate file system access).
     e.  Boot to Live USB media (maybe Puppy Linux? - never tried it).

3.  To fix you may:
     a.  Delete "boot.ini"  (from Recovery Console or another OS)
     b.  Rebuild "boot.ini" (from Recovery Console)
     c.  Copy correct "boot.ini" to hard drive (from Recovery Console or another OS)
     d.  Edit "boot.ini" in place (using another OS)

4.  What operating system and service pack level were you using; e.g. Windows XP Professional SP3?

5.  If necessary, there's a bootable "Recovery Console" iso image on the web that you may download and "write" (not copy) to a CD-R:  http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso.  They say it should match your version of the operating system, but I don't think it matters just to replace the "boot.ini".

6.  Puppy Linux Reference(s):
     a.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_Linux
     b.  http://www.puppylinux.com/faq.htm1.  You may ALSO use "alternate" boot media to load the operating system off the hard drive.  Once loaded, you may use Windows XP to fix the "boot.ini".  Files needed on the "alternate" boot media are:
     a.  NTLDR
     b.  NTDetect.com
     c.  Boot.ini - that points to correct location of hard drive operating system

The alternate media may be any device your system can boot from, formatted with any file system NTLDR can read (FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS).

The tricky part is the volume or partition boot record of the media must point to "NTLDR".  So you want to "format" the media on a Windows XP system to have the appropriate partition boot record laid down by the format.

2.  At some point you've got to ask yourself - wouldn't it be easier to fix the CD-ROM drive?

Solve : Anyone ever dealt with a .DSL file??

Answer»

I downloaded a dictionary as a .rar file. I then downloaded winzip to extract it. After I extracted the files to desktop, a folder appeared. It has two files in it: one is .ANN and the other is .DSL file. I know that this .DSL file is from ABBYY Lingvo dictionary software. I have ABBYY software installed and it runs smoothly but it won't open this newly downloaded dictionary Any suggestions Quote

I downloaded a dictionary
Where from? The dictionary comes from one site in Ukraine. It comes in a form of a .rar fileSecret site, so you can't post any link, or...torrent?The following link is usually a good source for unusual file extensions, but .dsl isn't listed.

http://www.fileinfo.com/

It's the only time it has come up short for me, which makes me wonder about the .dsl extension. If you don't mind downloading (and installing) ANOTHER program, you can use FileAlyzer from the author of "Spybot Search & Destroy" to look in the file.Dictionaries come from here:

http://freelib.in.ua/

some dictionaries I was able to download and integrate int ABBYY Lingvo which i already have as follows:

downloaded a .rar file, saved it to desktop, as "All Files"

Right-clicked on it and choose "extract here" (and I have winrar application to extract the files),
on desktop several files appear: one is  .ann file, the others are: 1-2 .dsl files and the third kind of file is named "Lingvo Dictionary" and looks like a shortcut on which I usually click to launch my ABBYY dictionary already installed

I can now doubleclick on this new shortcut and my ABBYY Lingvo dictionary (which I have installed previously from a disk that I bought) launches and then it asks me if I want to integrate this newly downloaded dictionary. I do that, refresh the ABBYY software and now I have an additional dictionary to use. Then, send this shortcut to my general ABBYY folder in Program files (I do not like to crowd the desktop)

But as for some other dictionaries which I downloaded from  from that site, after I right-click on downloaded winrar archives (which is how they appear on desktop after downloading) and choose "extract here", they only present me with one .ann file and one or two .dsl files on desktop. There is no shortcut which looks like "ABBYY Lingvo Dictionary" shortcut
I then approach  the .dsl file and TRY to open it, I am first asked which program I want to open it with?
I choose "ABBYY Lingvo"  The Lingvo Dictionary launches itself and then a message comes up that this .dsl file is NOT a dictionary or is corrupted

I hope I explained clearly for the experts, Perhaps someone can help me. If not, it's OK too have you tried opening the ANN file?.ann file I never tried opening because it is rather small (1-3kb), as opposed to .dsl files which are larger , SAY 0.8 mb, so I assume the dictionary is the .dsl file. Also before downloading, I saw on the site the description  "such and such dictionary, 0.8 mb or something", so that's why I go for .dsl and not for.ann file

I did Google ".dsl files" and the results SHOWED that these files are related to ABBYY-made softwarea CD image is 650 MB. but in order to Open a "BIN" image file, you usually need a "cue sheet" file, which is lterally around 1KB. the ANN file may not actually have the dictionary data but rather refer to the "DSL" files for the dictionary data, only providing an index of sorts.this is some information I came up with
Quote
Q: What is a DSL file?
Damaged Sector List.
When ************ encounters damaged sectors it logs them and at the end of the rip creates a file (DSL) that it PLACES in the ripped movie folder along side the VIDEO_TS
I deleted out the DVD ripping program this was referring to
Maybe downloading directly from Abbyy will help, here is a link to their Ukraine site
http://www.abbyy.ua/The ABBYY. ua site does not have these dictionaries for download. Only that site has them as addition to ABBYY software which I already own.

Inside the ABBYY dictionary in the Tools menu there is an optio "add a dictionary" which I chose and the window opened asking me where the dictionary is located, at the bottom it asks what type of file a dictionary is and it lists types of files it call "all Dictionaries" and the types of files are: .lsd .lud .ldp. .lod  .adc  .xml and then there is also a choice of "All FIles"
I of course chose ALL Dictionaries and later All Files, searched and found on desktop both .ann and .dsl files and each choice and each time the message came up that it was not the dictionary
Anyway, maybe someone knows how to convert files into one of the above files? If so, I'd appreciate  a piece of advice but if not- then not. I beleieve these are files of previous Lingvo software versions

And maybe someone knows how to convert .djvu files into one of the abovementioned files?

One more time - take your time and explain what's going on.I was trying to ask a simple question   obviously ive failed. I no i am in danger of sounding stupid so i PUT it simply. You know the control panel that allows you to customize the apearance and functionality of your computer? Well LAST wek i could add programs delete unused programs ,add user andguest accounts and all matter of what have you .Now i cant because my pc keeps telling me to contact a administrator to do it ,i dont have permission !I DID LAST WEEK so whats OCCURRED?It could be a permissions problem, it could be malware, maybe something else. Do you think the Windows 98 would work?

1.  Mine does...  If I'm gentle....

2.  Work for what?
     a.  As a "desktop" operating system?  Probably.  If it has the "drivers" necessary to support your hardware; or you can find the drivers for the built-in components onboard your motherboard.

     b.  As a stepping stone towards a Windows XP "upgrade" install?  Probably...

3.  Windows 95 boot disk?  You should be using Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition boot disk (floppy?) - depending upon your Windows version.

4.  You should be able to partition (fdisk) and format hard drive using the appropriate Windows 98 boot floppy (see www.bootdisk.com).  I don't recall if there's a "ebd.cab" file on those disks.  If so, look there (inside the cabinet file) for any programs that MAY be missing and "extract" what you need. Thanks for your help.

Solve : Windows XP Theme Messed up My Whole Computer?

Answer»

I was flitting around with Windows XP Themes. I found a way to install custom ones. I was ER, trying to install a Windows 7 Aero theme. I was also trying to make it a theme which I can access without having to open a file. I was in Display Properties, see, and it was selected to the Windows 7 theme, I saw that it was all black, but I figured it was a bug or something and would change it in the appearance tab later.

Big mistake.
Turns out, I have no idea about theme/theme FILES and how the work.

When I hit apply, almost everything on the screen went black. Not the natural black. I could see my icons and their names, but almost nothing else. I still can't. I can tell everything is there, I just can't see it. I TRIED to go back to display properties from the control panel, but the entire windows was blackened, too.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 With Windows XP SP3 and Ubuntu 9.10 dual-booted.
I got this laptop from someone else.
It doesn't seem to be able to read my installation disc, but I did find a Windows XP Reinstallation disk for Dell computers.
That worked, but I ended up getting the Blue Screen of Death, something about a hardware error, but maybe that's because I've been turning it on and off repeatedly.

Please help!   Will this work?

%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL %SystemRoot%\system32\desk.cpl desk,Themes /Action:OpenTheme /file:"%1"

(replace %1 with the file name)

Will that work? I run that in the command prompt?
I got it here:http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=296277Pull the drive...

Backup your IMPORTANT data...

Format the drive...

Re-install.

See how much fun Themes are ? ?Hahahaha. I couldn't have done that even if I tried.

I couldn't SEE anything. It all existed, it's just the theme made everything nearly black and unseeable.

I fixed a much er, easier way...

what this is,I do know it's withen the Windows
Live OneCare.I can backup,tuneup & restore,
I don't understand why I cannot clean or remove
these files ( Windows Live OneCare ).  I READ your post here and Patio's response.

It is almost impossible to advise you if you do not supply information as to what you have already tried/done/attempted and what the result was.

For example, does Onecare appear in the list of installed programs in Control Panel/Add or Remove programs and have you tried to Uninstall it (not delete it but Uninstall it?).  You will know that installed programs should be Uninstalled not deleted (or removed or cleaned or whatever).

PLEASE - more info.   What have you tried and what were the results?I went to OneCare got this
problem out of the way.

Thanks

Solve : blackout monitor?

Answer»

I was wondering why does my computer boots while there's no display on my SCREEN? my monitor has built in monitor already, can someone SUGGEST what should i do?A little more information would be helpful.I don't understand what the problem or issue is.

Is it a desktop or laptop computer?  If desktop, does it have onboard graphics?  I think you're saying you get no display upon system boot.  But the following is beyond my comprehension "my monitor has built in monitor already".

Does anything display on the monitor at any time?my cpu is booting normally, but there's no display on monitor, is maybe power or video card? my cpu has built in monitorit is a desktop
Quote from: ROBERT Tabiano on December 19, 2009, 01:53:24 PM

my cpu is booting normally, but there's no display on monitor

1.  Does anything at all display on the monitor at any time?
     a.  With computer powered off, monitor "switched" on; does anything display on the screen (No video signal message)?
     b.  Is monitor adjustment done with On-Screen Display?  If so, can you display its menus or instructions on monitor?
     c.  When you startup computer, does monitor display:
          a.  Graphics card, motherboard, or computer vendor logo
          b.  Text from Power-On Self Test (POST) diagnostics
          c.  Windows XP loading windows (with progress bar) screen

2.  Monitor.
    a.  Is it a CRT or LCD display?
    b.  Did you adjust the "Display Properties" (e.g. resolution, color depth, refresh rate) recently or switch from ONE monitor to another?
    c.  Have you tried a "known" working monitor on your system?
    d.  Have you tried your monitor on a "known" working system?i was checking this out because my difficulty is similar. my lcd screen is blank when i start my computer up. screen says no video input. monitor WORKS if \i hook it up to another computer. for some time, if I shut my computer off, when i restart, there would be nothing on the screen until i reboot with the reset button, then all would be good. but for the last week, i have had to reset lots to get the screen and now if i get a screen it blacks out after the windows logo.

My first response in this thread was based on my assumption he wants to build a Windows cd with Office, Photoshop, etc included so he could sell it. I'm really not sure why this thread then took on a life of its own, but it's been entertaining none the less Quote

yup thats what happendIt is possible to extend a command over more than one line by using the continuation CHARACTER ^ as the last entry on a line.   You will then be prompted to enter further details, after More?

e.g. at the command prompt:
dir ^
More? *.bat

will LIST all .bat files in the current directory.

This feature allows one command line to be up to 8191 characters in TOTAL length. See KB830473

Thanks Dusty for the KB article.  KB830473
I think that if I need more chuff on one line, I will do the batch inside Windows 2000. The article says that that Windows 2000 can have up to 2047 characters on one line. Have not got to that point. Not yet.

Your computer uses an Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) hard disk controller, and the following conditions are true:
    * You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable.
    * The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.

Or not...

I was hoping for a "determination" of the underlying problem, and the "fix", if any, that resolved it.Regardless of what he did, based on the original post all that was needed was to install XP and the correct drivers. At the risk of being overly verbose, here is a more explicit explanation of how you install XP on a hard drive that has either Vista or Windows 7.
Boot the XP CD into the normal setup. When you get to the point where you select a partition, you must, repeat, must all existing partitions DELETE. Then create a new partition, do not try to reuse the old partition. Windows XP must do a complete initialization, partition creation, and format of the drive.
The reason for this is explained in the Microsoft knowledge base.
Now that is all I have to say about this, until NEXT time.   Removing and re-creating existing partitions is an inherent FEATURE of every Win install CD/DVD since WinME...
I don't get why that's hard to understand as it's part of what was suggested...

Solve : Dell Mini 10v keeps going BSOD?

Answer»

I've had this Dell Mini 10v for about 4 months now, and up until about a week ago, when I got the new iPod nano and reinstalled iTunes. Ever since then my computer refuses to run more than five MINUTES when I'm watching a video, or playing Runescape; pretty much anything that moves on the screen will crash it. The crashes are either BSOD, or my whole computer will stop any play an annoying noise and refuse to work. If it doesn't do that, it'll freeze and repeat any audio that was playing at the time in a never ending loop. But if neither of those, it will go BSOD.
The types of BSODs will either be one of the three
1. It says no error message at the top
2. kernel thread terminated while holding a mutex
3. driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

I've done all I can when it comes to fixing these, I've Googled them and done my best to follow the instructions, I've downloaded CC cleaner done registry fixes, I've tried to use Avira Antivrus (I never had an anti virus until then, but it didn't pick up any viruses anyways), and I've defragmented the hard drive. This is my last resort I have no idea what to do anymore, I'm pretty sure these crashes have come from the iPod, but I don't really know. I will post any error reports I get in the future, and I will post logs from any PROGRAMS you guys request so please help me.

I don't want take wild guesses, but from my search, it looks like some hardware problem, integrated video chip, or RAM.
Since the netbook is 4 months old, I'd call Dell.Ditto...Well the laptop is past it's 90 day warranty so they won't do anything. I'm thinking about getting a USB CD drive and overwriting this file ( ntoskrnl.exe ) with the Windows recovery CD. Also, I got a different BSOD here's the reports from them

So if you guys know if this will work or not please tell me, or give me some other advice.
Only a 90 day warranty ? ?
Most laptops/netbooks carry a minimum 1 Year warranty.Nope just a 90 day warranty. Do you have any ideas on what to do, or do you know if what I'm going to try will work?Something is being left out here...
From the Dell Site:

1 Year Basic Mail-In Service Plan
Never heard of 90 days warranty...The store (BestBuy/FutureShop for example) you bought it from may have had a 90 day warranty. But Dell's warranty is 1 year. Call them.

Solve : MSN Messenger problem!?

Answer»

Hey all, so I am trying to make sure my MSN convo's STAY saved, but am having trouble doing so:

I know we need to go under messages and tick the box to "Automatically keep a history of my conversations".

So I chose the destination folder, but my conversations are not being saved onto there.  Basically with my friend CHRIS, I had his convo's saved in the folder already, but sort of messed about and moved his FILE to another folder and then back.  I read that YUO can't combine the convo's either with MSN.

But I have a conversatio I would really like to save.  I have not signed out of MSN yet, and still have the entire MSN messenger window open (where you type in messages/chat with the actual person).  I know I can copy/paste, but I would like it in the XML format where it goes ONLINE and uses Internet Explorer to give you the conversation in that format

How can I do this?  I still have my chat window with the person in front of me.

Thanks!
