I installed a new hard drive. It is 160G the old one was 80g. I used the original windows xp pro disc that the fellow that built the computer gave me. I had always had good fonts. Now the fonts will come up very SMALL even on some web pages. They become distorted and overlap in places.I have tried every thing that has been recommended  at differant places on the net. No luck. Think someone here can help me? Would be appreciated. Thanks Quote

Have you tried adjusting fonts, sizes on your View menu of your browsers? Click View(menu) SELECT zoom (to 100%) text SIZE(medium) Encoding(WestEur, left to right). Click TOOLS menu, Internet options, under General tab, Appearance, USE Arial,Courier New, click Apply. Under your Control Panel,Display settings, Settings tab, Advanced..., Troubleshoot tab, Slide to full your Hardware Acceleration, click Apply.
After installing the OS did you download and install all drivers (chipset, video, etc)?

I've searched for the answer, but all people mention is something about a 60 day trial period, but I've had this computer for years1

You've had the computer for years but how long since you started using Word?  Is your version of Microsoft Office a trial version?  Surely, you know the answer to that.  The key clue: did you ever pay for Microsoft Office?Hi

Don't think anything is new. I was working on it last night, when all of a sudden it began to stop working. When I bought the computer, I paid for all the microsoft office stuff, they've been working fine for 5 years. And you can enter text into other documents with the keyboard, is that correct?

When you type in Word, does the cursor move or does nothing at all seem to happen?

And is this a desktop or a laptop?Hi Allen

I am able to type in everything else, including publisher and powerpoint. The computer is a desktop. When I try to type the cursor is flashing, but doesn't move its location. I can do things like insert autoshapes change the line spacing, change the font, etc.

thanks for your support

If this is Word 2007, click on the Office Button, then Word Options, then Resources then Activate.

If it's Word 2003, click on HELP, then Activate

I have a rather old computer and it is running windows xp. My computer will randomly just shut down (goes into a kind of standby MOOD, where the screen goes off and I can't do anything) this happens when I am just BROWSING the internet or OCCASIONALLY when I PLUG something into the USB ports. I this an over heating problem? software problem or a power supply problem?

Thank you.Need to KNOW if it's actually standby, the screen going into power saver mode, or really a shutdown.

1) Check settings in power options

Solve : Driver problem and kstvtune.ax?

Answer»

Hello

I have a basic Web cam which I am trying to install. I have installed the drivers that came with it from a CD and the software tells me that they have been installed properly. The PC also detects the new hardware when I plug the camera into the tower.

However, I can see a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager so there is a driver problem - it says CIF Single Chip - and when I try to troubleshoot it I am told that file kstvtune.ax is needed. It says this file is on the Win XP home CD.

But that file is not on the Win XP home CD.

What is the best way of resolving this, please?

Thanks.

ALOT of jasons linx for help unfortunately produce those results...Thanks for the link Allan. that link allows me to reinstall DIRECT X which I have done, but on restarting I STILL get that message - please see attachment, PLUS I still have that yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. So the driver still hasn't been installed and repairing/reinstalling Direct X doesn't seem to have resolved the problem.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Are you running SP2? If so, upgrade to sp3 and let's see what happens. You may need to borrow an XP Pro CD...Hello patio

It is XP home that I am trying to resolve the problem on.

I am in the process of downloading SP3 - not sure why it wasn't done automatically when Windows Update is on - but I am told that 'set up cannot copy the file mswstr10.dll. I am attaching a shot.

The file mswstr10.dll is PRESENT in my system32 folder, but Windows doesn't seem to be able to copy it, so for the time being installing SP3 is on hold.

Solve : Do I have to have all of the Windows components actively running on my computer??

Answer»

Hello,
I thank you for your time and work that you put in helping many of us who need you.

I am THINKING that I am a bit backwards and behind the times because I find that the more programs I have on my computer the less I like it.  I know there are fantastic programs out there but I'm just not that computer literate and I really PREFER keeping things simple.

There are two computers in our home, mine and my husband's. We occassionally use the other person's PC but not often.  We are connected to the internet through our router provided by our ISP Verizon.  I don't care if I am connected to or "networked together" with my husband's computer.  Actually if it creates the need for alot of Microsoft Windows programing that I otherwise wouldn't use I would like to opt out of the whole "network" thing.  Is this an option?  I have read HP Help and SUPPORT and other technological articles and am still not sure of how our home should or should not be configured to get the results I want.  I'm also not sure of what programs I can uninstall from my PC after having the 'right' configuration.

Can you help?

1.  What makes you think you are "networked together" other than sharing a router?  Windows default is no sharing, so one computer does not see the other.
2.  Unplug the computer from the router if you don't need the internet connection.

Solve : Problem uninstalling program.?

When I try to uninstall a program I downloaded (Called Freecorder) I keep getting this message.

"Invalid Uninstall"
I did uninstall the program once with no problem when it wasn't working PROPERLY, the only unusual thing to OCCUR was the uninstall LINKED me to thier website with multiple tech questions as to why the uninstall, this 2nd uninstall is not going so well

Thank you in advance.

Kelly Try reinstalling the app and then uninstalling it again. If above tip doesn't WORK, try a freeware utility called Revo Uninstaller from download.com
Windows Add/Remove and most program uninstall applets leave FOLDERS and registry entries on the pc.

Solve : Input not supported?!?

Ok so I got this great new screen for my home PC. Its a 19 inch eMachines with a response time 5mm. What my problem is every time I try to play the game GTA VC on it the screen goes blank as has this moving box saying Input not Supported. THe game works on my old 17 inch tube display but i can't go back to my old screen. Its huge! At first I thought That it was the game graphics being to old for this screen but when I played Doom The plutonia Experiment on my old Powermacintosh G3 Mac OS 9.2. It was more pixelated than gta vc so VC has to work somehow. All my other game's work so im not sure. If anyone has any idea's that would be great. Thanks in advance. I'm not sure if this helps but here are my system specs:

2.8 GHz intel pen 4
60  GB hdd primary
80 GB Hdd secondary
1 GB RAM
256 MB  ATi Graphics  the monitor doesn't support the resolution the game is trying to run at.how do i CHANGE the resoulution of the game?all right I figured it out! thanks to BC programmer who identified the problem for me. I found a site that simply told you to delete one file. go to my documents/gta vc user files/ and delete the file GTA_VC.set. Thanks for the update - glad you got it sorted out.

Solve : half installed operating system?

Answer»

Hi there,

My laptop has xp home edition installed on it, my children have done something - not sure what, but now when it boots up it shows the setup screen for xp professional as though it is part way through installing this version of xp

If I switch off and restart it will load windows home edition

If I start up in safe mode it GIVES me the choice to load xp home edition or to load xp professional SET up - it selects the xp professional setup as default option

how can I sort this so it just starts with xp home edition and loads windows normally?

thanks
Gordon  Well, You can just hide the 'XP Pro setup' option.
Right-click on 'My Computer';
select 'Properties';
go to 'Advanced' tab;
click 'Startup and recovery' settings;
select Your XP Home as default operating system in drop-down menu and clear the checkbox prompting for 'Time to display list of operating systems', then CONFIRM changes. The easiest thing for you to do is to partition, format and re-install Windows ME, unless you want a dual OS harddrive.  You could do a system restore, thats if you havent formatted the harddrive before, then you wont have any restore points.  You could also do a recovery.  It really depends on what they have done and what you want to try and keep. Good luckyou can also try changing the boot.ini file, you can delete one of the partitions that your not using.  But make sure you know what you're doing, you could mess up both partitionsWhat the heck does WinME have to do with his issues here ? ?Sorry about that, meant to put Home edition Quote from: Archer on April 27, 2009, 07:35:41 AM

Recently my computer desktop icon images has changed. I sorry don't really know how to EXPLAIN so I have put a Screen Shot of the Desktop IMAGE problem. Please help.
Example : instead of the Computer icon in MY computer there is a BOX there..

[ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]is it happened in safe mode?try , right click on the icon , open , close page , this did it for me , harrysuch a thing can happen when your PC cant retrieve the icon pictures fast enough on start up it gives up and leaves them blank.
Normally this would only happen with one or 2 icons

Do you Find your PC to be Running slow other than at Start up ? You might want to try rebuilding icon cache. Rebuilding icon cache is for when your icons have changed to different ones unexpectedly or it displays odd things.

Solve : Buffer Overrun message?

Answer»

I know that others have posted for this error message, but they don't seem to fit my problem.  I have Microsoft XP and recently downloaded I.E. 8.  Since then, I cannot get into IE, or if I click on a link from email or MSN, I get this error message.  I have had this once before, and I think has SOMETHING to do with my security system. However, I don't remember what I did to fix it.  Any help I can get, I will be most thankful.  I also have Symantec from NOrton t oprotect my computer.  I also installed ReCur to clean out my processing.  Neither one detected a virus or noted anything wrong with my system. 1. Don't touch anything like RegCure, or next thing you know, you have to reinstall Windows.
2. Uninstall IE.
3. ....and my best advice - switch to another browser, like Firefox.Yes as Broni SAYS Uninstall the UPDATE and if you intend to use IE you should Update it to IE8 its much more secure than IE 7
so Re-Download the Client and run the install proccesss again

When installing things it helps if your PC is running as little as possible to make sure theres no ERRORS so make sure you close all other applications while you install IE8

You may Also Want to use Fire FOX or Chrome as a back up Browser.

Solve : BOOT DEVICE?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimenson 2350 which was GIVEN to me Less the Resource CD  when I try to boot it tells me no boot divice detected .

Question, how do I get the computer to boot , or where can I download the resource CD
They can be ordered directly from Dell for a NOMINAL charge. Also ...

1. You are not able to get into bios by PRESSING some key like F1?

2. You might download the HARD disk drive manufacturer's diagnostics and run them just to double check if drive is GOOD (which I assume it is but wouldn't hurt to verify). Check the link I posted below, direct from dell with their instructions.

Solve : advent pc wont boot at all?

Answer»

hope someone can help...i have a advent pc that has died it  had a 350w power supply i changed it to 550w and still nothing any help would be appreciatedWhat's the make and model?

When you say it "died" does that mean there is no indication of power, when you power on the computer?  First try plugging it into another wall outlet.  Next try reseating the power connectors on the motherboard...If you've done those things and there is still no indication of power going to the computer, then most likely you'll need another motherboard...

Hope you didn't spend too much on that new power supply.  It's always good to try to borrow a power supply from another computer/or someone for troubleshooting purposes, whenever possible, before purchasing Define "died".......No lights,beeps,video.....?

You may have disturbed another component when you changed the power supply. Reseat all your cards, memory, connections, and make sure heatsink is flush to motherboard and CPU fan is attached....Also check the connections from the front of the PC to the motherboard header.....common to have ONE of these come loose.

If you do require a new MB, the power supply is a good investment.....if it was a bad supply originally, then it conceivably could have ruined a new motherboard.....It's good practice to change the power supply when installing a new motherboard .yes there is no power whatsover im usually quite good at repairs but im baffled its not my pc its a friends it is an advent t9304 nothing has been disturbed it just wouldnt come on one morning...it was running on 350w so i tried my 550w but still nothing"Advent" is NOT the manufacturer of the PC.
Who made it?  HP, Compaq, eMachine.......WHO?

One thing you can try, if it's playing dead, won't cost you anything,
well, maybe $3.

With all power REMOVED from the system, take out the little CR2032 coin-type battery.
Leave it out for at least 20 to 30 minutes.  If you have a voltmeter handy check the voltage on the battery.  It must be 3.0 vdc to be good.
If not at least 3.0 vdc, replace it!

Then after the above mentioned time, replace the battery, restore line power and try again to start up the PC.

I've worked on several HP computers that appeared totally DEAD, till I performed the above process.
Then they came back to life, good as new.

A 350w PSU in a desktop computer is usually NOT enough power.  It's especially bad if it's a "Bestec" or "Codegen" PSU.  I'd always opt for a 500w PSU to replace a 350.
The 350 on the PSU case is the momentary startup value, derate that by as much as 30% for the all-day operating value.

Good Luck,
Shadow  (theshadow) the only thing it says on the tower is advent t9304....if i take the battery out will that diturb any FILES hardware etc..
Could be the power switch on the front of the PC....and of COURSE you've already checked the wall socket and surge protector, right?

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbysymptom/ht/nopowertopc.htmyes karnac all checked Removing the CMOS battery will not disturb any files on the system...ok thanks ive tried taking the cmos batt out but still nothingThis is a  Pentium 4...Are you using an ATX 12 V power supply with the auxiliary 4 pin connector...make sure the 4 pin connector is attached to the motherboard as well as the main connector.yes KARNA it is all connectedIf you think it's the switch, and you have a reset button on the front panel , you can use the reset button for the PW-ON switch by plugging the reset connector plug to the PW-ON connection on the motherboard header. Of course you'll have no reset button on the front of the case....If you are confident in the box give it a try and this will tell if the switch is faulty.
Any sign of corrosion or leaky capacitors.......

Kinda running out of options here, gragsy.......maybe time to think motherboard or escalate this to Patio or Broni.i appreciate ur help karnac but there is no reset button on the front...and no corrosion or leaky cappacitors

Solve : Annoying IE 8 error window at computer sign-on?

Answer»

When I sign on to my XP system computer (and before I start my modem and go on line) I get this small error window: "Windows internet Explorer cannot find file :///.  Make sure path or internet ADDRESS is correct."  This began maybe four or five days ago, and it persists even after I TRIED to go back via System Restore. Note no file is specified, only that brief prefix which tells me nothing. I'm using NIS 2009, and that is giving me a clean bill of health in respect to spyware and viruses.  My startup array is clean (nothing there that shouldn't be) and I keep that as lean as possible. This is essentially an annoyance. I haven't found any malfunction that could pertain to this. My computer seems to be functioning normally otherwise. Can anyone educate me re this please? It's odd that I would get an IE error window when Explorer hasn't even yet been activated and I'm not on line. I've Googled this issue to death to no avail, and I can't find this specific issue in your forums. What is your Homepage set to ? ?
Do you have Active Desktop enabled ? ?
If so turn it off and re-boot and see if the error goes away.Nope, ain't got no active desktop. I'm using one of my photos there.  My homepage is comcast.net. They recently went to a newly designed main page. How would that come into play when I'm not yet on line when this occurs? This looks like a golden opportunity for me to learn something. Can you offer more info?Since IE is looking for a file ./// i assumed if Active Desktop was on that a shortcut on the Desktop or the Desktop background image was not being found...
However that's not the case here.

Does IE load on startup ? ?
NOTE: This may be a hidden comcast feature...

DLoad StartupCPL from Mike Lin and it will install a Startup Icon inside Control Panel.
It's a tiny nifty app that will show exactly what loads on startup...even hidden items.

Don't edit anyting you're unsure of though.

P.S. What is that protection package you mentioned ? ?I use Norton Internet Security 2009, and I like it.... a lot.  I think Symantec finally got their act together with this one.  It's reasonably easy to use, it updates CONSTANTLY, and when it finds anything fishy, it tosses it unceremoniously. I've yet to smack into a virus or malware that NIS2009 couldn't handle.

I don't think IE8 loads along with Comcast's software. I have to double-click the Explorer shortcut icon on the desktop to launch it. But am I certain?  Nope.  I would think that would certainly show in the startup array, and my start list is kept pretty lean.  As for the suggested app, I'd need to know more. I did have a look at Mike's site. Much of it seems over my head, and I'm exceedingly cautious about adding anything I'm not confident about.  Har-har, when I DL something it usually ends up discombobulated and lost SOMEWHERE in the desert, even if it doesn't gronk my pc in the process. After all these years, yes, I'm still a novice at many pc things as I stumble toward official geezerhood, sixty-five. I tried a System Restore via safe mode but, sigh, no dice. The little blighter is still popping up like a gopher out of his hole.Mike Lin has written many solid apps and is well respected in his community...
We don't casually recommend things around here as we value our reputation. When you did the System Restore did you get a message that said "Restoration Incomplete"?

This is known issue with Norton. You have to disable protection for Norton products in order for System Restore to work. You don't have to disable Norton but just the protection for Norton products. You can turn it back on after you've done the restore.

Look at this page for instruction on turning off protection for your particular version.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/0/c7a9848df95596b9882570c900605bf5?OpenDocument&seg=hm&lg=en&ct=us

I suggest going back at least three days before the problem started.

If the System Restore doesn't work, uninstall IE8. Go into control panel and select Add/Remove Programs. Make sure there is a check mark next to "Show Updates" near the top. Find IE8 and uninstall. When you restart, your computer will have rolled back to IE7.

Furthermore I recommend that you download and install CCleaner. You can find it here
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Install it and let it analyze your system and then run the cleaner. This will clean all of the crap out of your computer. Then let it scan your registry for ISSUES. You will probably be surprised at how many it finds.

Good Luck!

Solve : Windows taskbar and start menu aren't there.?

Answer»

So somehow, after reformatting my iPod, I decided to turn off my computer. Well, today when I GOT on, it said something which I've seen before, nothing huge, I believe it was just giving me the choice of starting it on Safe mode or not. But then once I clicked on it, it seemed as if Windows was going to start, but then something I've never seen before CAME up saying something about doing a disk clean up sort of thing.
Well, after that was all finished, and my computer was starting a window POPPED up saying, "An unauthorized -something something- will MAKE it so you no longer get updates."
Then the only thing that opened, (oh thank you so much) was Firefox. Everything else is black. No Windows at all.

I'm surprised that the internet even works now.Restart your computer and tap F8 repeatedly as it is starting ( before Windows loads). This will take you to the advanced startup menu. Choose "last Known Good CONFIGURATION".

Solve : I found it!?

Answer»

After extensive searching on my desktop (literally a desktop), I finally found it on an old piece of paper.

No one seemed to know about this, so I am posting it here for everyone's edification.

To use restore from the DOS prompt: %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

This will save you multiple headaches when trying to retrieve a workable version of Windows.  Write it down.  Don't lose it like I did.

But I would still appreciate a response to my "Three bootup options in XP" question below.I knew about this, but it is usually unecessary. it CAL also be accessed through Start->All Programs->Accessories->System tools->System Restore, and Safe mode, which prompts to start it.

Either way, it only affects a single installation of windows ANYWAY and thus would have no bearing on multiple installed OS's.I never said anything about multiple OS's.

You can address this function through the method you mentioned but you have to get into Windows to do it.  This is through the DOS prompt only.

It has saved me before, perhaps it will others too. Quote

This is through the DOS prompt only.

IE: a command window after windows has started. It won't work from recovery console.

your multiple OS's were regarding your other thread, where you racked your brain for this "restore" DOS command. I personally thought you MIGHT have been thinking of RESTORE or RECOVER for MS-DOS, not a windows program such as rstrui.

it's a useful reference if one cannot get explorer.exe started or can only start windows with the Safemode command prompt only. Which won't PROVIDE the prompt I mention (it's actually explorer.exe that starts and detects safe mode and offers to start system restore)

But... one still needs to be able to at least start in safe-mode command prompt.

Solve : Three bootup options in XP?

Answer»

I recently tried a repair of XP on my C drive.  There was no 'R' option as per the instructions, so I ended up doing a full install...or so I thought.

This is what I ended up with:

When I boot up after the XP install following the mb screen I get 3 (count 'em) THREE options under Select Operating System.

All 3 say MS Windows Professional

If I pick Door Nr. 1 I get the blue sky/grass scene reminiscent of when one does a complete install of XP - which I did.

If I pick Door Nr. 2 I GO back to the install procedure where I'm waiting with 39 minutes to go.

If I pick Door Nr. 3 I go back to my original screen with all of my old icons.

I want Door Nr. 3.  But how do I get rid of the other two options?Have a look here.....http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_remove_boot_choices_that_i_no_longer_want.html Quote from: KARNAC on June 02, 2009, 07:51:06 PM

Done and Done!Just one of the many Services we offer...Well, that was interesting.

So I followed the above instructions - even loaded Recovery Console.

Now when I boot up I have 3 choices:

MS XP Professional
Recovery Console
Windows (default)

Taking the XP option gives me the screen I want 50% of the time - the other 50% it hangs at the black Windows screen

Using Windows default puts me back in the field with the grass & sky - in other words, a full reinstall.  I don't want to be in the fields.

Is there any way to stabilize the first option?  I do have another HD available. What I basically want to know is this...

Is there a way to format a HD to clean it, load XP, and then transfer the settings of my 2nd HD to that one?

I'm trying to get a RELIABLE bootup HD that has my old installations without having to reinstall all of them (and there are many - some of which I don't have passwords to reinstall)

Can that be done?Have a look here......

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293118Thanks for this link.

I have a ?

Can I not do a direct transfer of data?  Do I really need a DVD or some such thing to make the transfer?  It would seem that if both HDs were in the same system the data should be able to be transferred directly.

The internet exployer keep shutting down all the  time. IT just quits running and also I get a memory error message alot. I dont know how to fix these problems. Could be a number of causes: Malware, Virus, Hardware malfunctions.

I would suggest installing MalwareBytes or Spybot Search and Destroy and run one of those and check for malware, as well as if you antivirus is out of date also installing a newer trial of say norton for 15 days to see if you got anything there virus wise.

You can run the Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES) feature from WITHIN IE7.
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab >> click the 'Reset Internet Explorer Settings' button.

After RIES has run its course, you'll notice that the settings for the browser's home pages, search providers, browsing history, FORM data, passwords, appearance settings, toolbars and ActiveX controls are reset to their "first-run" states.
If you can't open Internet Explorer because of all the problems you were experiencing, choose the Internet Options applet within Control PANEL, and you can access the RIES button from there.
See if that helps you, you might need to re-enter passwords at websites though.

Hope this helped Internet Exployer ?

Solve : Windows Strt Up Issue?

Answer»

Hello all,

I have been having issues when booting up my COMPUTER, when windows is starting up, it just stops.
The mouse is movable, but NOTHING happens, right now I am forced to go through the safe mode menu and USE "start from last known good configuration". This is working for now, however it is a hassle and I fear that it too will fail.

This has been happening for a long time, to my knowledge I did not INSTALL any new programs or download ANYTHING when this started. I am using a Toshiba Satellite A105 with Windows XP Home Edition. Any help would be fantastic on both how to fix this, and how it happened in the first place so I can prevent things like this in the future.

Thank youSTART you computer in SAFE MODE With Networking...instead of plain safe mode

Update your anti-virus defintions and run a scan....

Also, Download Malwarebytes, install it, update it, and run a full system scan..

If any viruses are found, be sure to rid them, and try starting your computer up normally again...

edit: How far does it get before it stops, as you described?

Solve : windows OS called LAST XP?

Answer»

Does any anyone have any info on windows OS called LAST XP would like to know THINGS like system requirements and how to install and set it up.there is no windows OS called LAST XP- It's probably some n-lited pirated version. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 02, 2009, 01:14:39 PM

there is no windows OS called LAST XP- It's probably some n-lited pirated version.

Almost all windows O.S. that have NAMES that have words added in addition to the official M$ ones are most likely pirated operating systems that either allow one to install the operating system silently without asking for cd key, have had the themes changed from official by patching or have been bundled with additional software that has been cracked, patched or are supplied with the means to do so.

That is generally what I have seen. So no don't go with a pirated Operating System ever.an example:

Windows XP, Super cool black gamer edition

the changes? somebody ran n-lite and removed hyperterminal. ALRIGHT! NOW IT'S A SCREAMIN OS!

or like Microsoft Office 2007 Blue Edition, which isn't actually blue. LAST XP is a hacked (illegal) version of Windows AVAILABLE on torrent sites. A "customized" version with some elements removed for a more stripped down/basic install. It probably includes TROJANS or ROOTKITS so stay away from it.LAST XP may be the last Xp you install on that machine...

Solve : Error message 1304?

Answer»

I get an error message ("1304 writing to file C\documents & settings\all users \verify that you have access to this directory") when I try to install my NEW movie editing program. I've tried restarting my COMPUTER and reenstalling the disk with no success.  I'm runnung Windows XP home edition. I need to know what the error message is and how to fix it.  Funny thing is I was able to download this pinnacle program from their website on a 30 day free trial.  I liked it and then bought the complete program with accessories from Best Buy.  I was TOLD to uninstall the trial program before INSTALLING the new program disk included in the box which I did.  When I uninstalled the trial program, I immediately attempted to install the new disk without any other computer action done on my part in between this process.  That's when the problem began.  Some have advised using a Registry CLEANER available for a price but I'm not sure if they work or are really safe to use regarding this issue.  Hope someone can.  Nalee was nice enough to try. Thanks pretty much says you don't have permission or it can't locate the path, change the rights of your profile or the target of the installation and see if that helps.  Good luck

Solve : Disabling/Removing the shutdown button on windows xp sp3?

Answer»

I work on a college campus. I maintain the labs. My boss wants to be able to float the computers in the labs updates at night. All of the computers in the labs have Deep freeze. So i have been toying with the possibility, of not letting students/faculty not be able to shut down the pc's only restart. I've been searching on and off for the last day or so, and the only THING i found was to completely disable the shutdown button all together, and create a short cut to restart. which works, but i want it to be familiar for the users. so basically what i am asking is:

is there a way to disable the shutdown function when a user hits a red power button and just make restart and log off options?http://dreadbob.blogspot.com/2008/05/how-to-disable-shutdown-in-xp.html
https://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/tips/frisvold1.mspxThanks for the help. But not quite what I am looking for. Honestly replacing the start button would be the best/disabling the "shutdown" option when CLICKING the red button. There is definitely a way, maybe i might have to look into some regedit things. either way.... holding the physical power button for 5 or so seconds will shut it off, regardless of settings. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 03, 2009, 06:16:45 AM

Yeah, I am aware of that. My EFFORTS are just to minimize the ODDS that a computer will be shut down before updates are sent to the pc's.

I forgot to add to my last post. That I had tried that, and it let me shut down. So either i did something wrong or it doesn't work. I'll have to look it.

Solve : Help!!! "Loading PBR for Descriptor 3...done" Can't get past it!!!?

Answer»

Okay, this happened about a month ago first of all. I was on my computer and it froze and next time I turn it on I get to a screen that says Loading PBR for Descriptor 3...done and it just stops there and doesn't do anything.

- When I try to wipe harddrive it says "Can't restore"
- When I try to re-install my Windows or any other computer disk it says "Disk Error"

Also before the PBR for Descriptor 3 screen, I get a screen that says "Floppy Disk Seekette Failure, Press F1 to continue". Which I then press F1 and I continue but then I get to the Loading PBR for Descriptor 3...done screen and it doesn't do anything but just sit there and I can't wipe harddrive or install disks.

Basically this is a horrible problem because I can't even get past the first loading screen on my computer1)Try  F8 safe mode and follow directions.
2) Insert installation disk and use repair option. Thanks for the response. Tomorrow I'm going to try to put it in safe mode. Hopefully it lets me. I'll update you tomorrow. It won't let me in safe mode. Right after I turn it on, it goes to the Dell loading screen where I press F8 several times and get nothing.

Then it goes to "Floppy Diskette Seek Failure" "Strike F1 to continue, F2 to run the setup utility"

Then it goes straight to "Loading PBR for descriptor 3....done."

No PART in that sequence lets me get in safe mode.

Anything else you would like me to try? There is a good chance, your hard drive is failing.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the BRAND of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, which is not listed, try using Hitachi tools.

Do you want me to run that diagnostic on my laptop or my desktop? My desktop is the the one that won't let me even boot up the computer. It gets to the Dell screen and I can't get past that because after that it leads to a screen that says "Loading PBR for Descriptor 3...done." and I can't even get into safe mode or wipe my hard drive, let alone actually get to the internet.

My laptop is doing fine and doesn't have any problems. You want me to run the diagnostic on my laptop? You create the CD on your laptop, and you run it on Desktop. Quote from: Broni on June 02, 2009, 02:03:39 PM

Is there any other route I can use to fix this problem? I am able to access Boot Menu and Settings Menu but after that there is no continue. Is there anyway I could fix it in Boot Menu or Settings Menu?

If I CALLED the brand of my computer (Dell), would they be able to have any useful information or no?I'm not aware of any other way on un-bootable computer.

Dell will HELP you, if the computer is under warranty.

BTW, why you don't want to run the test? Quote from: Broni on June 02, 2009, 07:12:12 PM

Well this laptop I'm using isn't really mine so I don't wanna do something on it when I don't know what I'm doing (I'm a noob).

I'll call Dell later this week.

If anyone has any suggestions just let me know.

Solve : Mailwasher Pro black list and friends list?

Answer»

I have used Mailwasher for a long time and developed and GOOD black list and friends list.

I found a portable version of Mailwasher and works o/k. The only problem is that, of course, it keeps the black and friends list in DIFFERENT places. I have tried to copy Blacklist.txt from my original Mailwasher installation to different folders in the portable installation without any luck. The black list and friends lists in the settings
window is still empty.

Does any one know which files I need to copy and to where in the portable installation?
ThanksHave you searched the installation path for all txt files such as a search for *.txt in that installation path to see if OTHERS show. If so copy all *.txt files to other system and restart program to read those txt file lists. In the help file I found that the balcklist.txt, filters.txt and the training folder should be COPIED to the new installation directory. The blacklist.txt contains both the whitelist and blacklist.

I did this while Mailwasher was unlaunched. Then launched it. What happens is that size of blacklist.txt  reduces and the blacklist section disappears, and there is no list visible in the blacklist in the settings window.

Why should the blacklist be removed from the blacklist.txt?
ThanksFound the problem.
The Origin of spam setting, uncheck the checkbox for Check the origin of the EMAIL against DNS spam blacklist servers. Also uncheck all the expiry settings for spam settings.
