Solve : Mouse Problem??

Answer»

I have a logitek cordless OPTICAL mouse, periodically my mouse would start skippng, then work again for a bit,, been goin on about a week. At first it just seemed to happen while playing games but it seems to do it at other times as well. SOOOO I changed my moust to a microsoft optical--but with a cord and it worked better but now, the screen will only refresh while I am movin my mouse. any thoughts? running xp homeA COMMON issue with wireless mice... How far is your mouse from the adapter, or where you get signal from? It should be about 6 inches away, and should have a clear view of the mouse...

[glb]Flame[/glb]No changed mice to one with a cord,, in my games the screen only updates while moving my mouse now. my new mouse works fine on another computer. Updated my graphics drivers when this first strarted as well.Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Also, you SHOULD only have one mouse installed becuase of possible driver conflict...

[glb]Flame[/glb]have done full virus scan and spyware scan,, doesnt help,,also doesnt SEEM to be tied to the mouse. To get my screen to update I need to either use my mouse)R keyboard,, If neither are moved it just freezes, gona reload one of my games and see if that helps at all.Have you UNINSTALLED the previous mouse drivers should there be any?k narrowing it down,, doesnt seem to be a mouse problem,, looks like there is a problem with my direct x,, when I run the direct x diagonotics,, and test direct 3d the spinning box only moves when I move my mouse or hit keys on the keypad,,  as long as I am not doing anything with graphics my computer seems to be fine.Have you tried updating your graphics card drivers? Also, what version of Direct X are you using?

Solve : Calculator Missing?

Answer»

Hi

1. I went to use the calculator in my Xp home and there it was...GONE!
I have SEARCHED for it using the "search" on the start button with no results.

2. When I do re-located it, I would like to have it replace the "end" key that I never use.  Any ideas ?

Thanks
Kellee
The calculator should be under
1. Start
2. Programs
3. Accesoires.

If it is missing, you may wish to look under X:\Windows\System32 for Calc.exe.

Where X is the LETTER of the drive Windows XP is installed on.

I do not believe it is possible to replace the function of the End key. Many word processing programs use it to go the end of the line the cursor currently resides in.

You can also access the calculator by doing the following:

1. Start
2. Run
3. Calc.exeControl panel......add/remove /programs icon  now clicl window setup tab......and now click accessories.....in the list should be your calculator......enable it by TICKING the accessories box.......is there any thing missing from your o/s....!I retreived it. Thanks,

My old keyboard had a Calculator shortcut key on it. I would like to make my new keyboard do the same thing. Is this possible?

Kelleemake it a desktop  short cut.........right click on the calculator ICONI did that... I would like to replace a key with the calculator shortcut. The calculator shortcut on your previous keyboard was designed for that particular piece of hardware. Hence the drivers you may have needed to install.

women i love 'em>>>>>.http://malektips.com/xp_calculator_0003.htmlYou can assign any key to any program? That is quite useful.Alt+C looks like a good combination!

But here is a much better Calculator and also a Unit Converter.

CALCULATOR CALC '98

CONVERTOR UNIT CONVERTOR (Gb/Mb/Byte, etc.)"Alt+C looks like a good combination!"

Nope! Can't do that. You need to press the Ctrl+Alt+C keys to get it to appear in the window and then click Apply.

I already have the converter

Thanks for the links

KelleeMy pleasure.

So now if you use the constant 1.073741824 you can easily work out the drive sizes you have.

E.G. 10 Gb (Decimal) = 10 ÷ 1.073741824 = 9.3132257462 Gb (9.31 Gb Binary.)

marek1177What type of OS CD is this ? ?

More details...i have two one is windows 2000 which worked before on a DIFFRENT computer and the other one is XP which i just got

DLoad a WinME bootdisk with CDROM support from bootdisk.com and follow the instructions on making the floppy.
When finished put it in the machine, power down and re-boot.
Have the Win2K CD in as well.
At the A: prompt type D: and hit Enter.
At the D: prompt type setup and hit Enter.

Setup should now start.

This should work with either OS CD as long as they are not copies...but my main computer doesnt have a floppy drive[smiley=embarassed.gif]OK

Will neither of these OS CD's boot ? ?
They should both be bootable as i said unless they are copies.
You might have to go into the BIOS and set the CDRom as first boot device...they are copies and i did change it first but since te original OS doesnt work could that be part of the problem?

Solve : technical issue using a folder locker?

Answer»

I password protected a folder using Folder Locker by softpen.  Then I opened folder locker again and tried to find the LOCKED folder--- now the program is saying it can't find a locked folder.  How would I recover my files LOST to this program? You are using the Unlock Folder option, right?

Click on Unlock Folder and then click on Agree.  At the next WINDOW, click on Search and have it search in C:\ (don't get more specific than that).  It should GIVE you a list of different folders.  The results will look like:

C:\yourfolder.__sbx

Select the folder you want, ENTER your password (if you originally encrypted it with one), and click on UnProtect.  That should hopefully fix your problem.

Solve : Doube .exe.exe copy?

Thanks for your input everyone :d

i finally managed to get AVG to work.. I discovered yesterday that the .exe's arent actually being deleted, just relocated and renamed. I ran AVG and several trojans were found in DLL's in the computer and they were eradicated. Now only time will tell if it stops.

...jcarr

Jcarr:

I'd suggest using your Windows CD or the PC manufacturer's System Restoration CD to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows, as your system is CHRONICALLY infected.  Trojans can steal passwords, credit card numbers, use your PC to MAKE phone calls for which you will receive the bill, etc.

If you don't want to reinstall Windows, i'd suggest purchasing an ANTIVIRUS program such as Norton Antivirus or the McAfee program.

http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=276&affid=101

They cost more than AVG, but, in my opinion, they are worth it.  last year we did actually get a few wierd call to britain show up on the phone bill. No one knew where it came from. there was three of them all within two minutes. But we are dial-up are they able to make calls when the phone is tied up ANYWAY?

jcarrYes.

Solve : Monitor says "out of range" going into safe mode?

Answer»

Hello,
I am having problems getting into safe mode in xp, I push f8  when booting and it goes into the menu where I SELECT safe mode but then the monitor says "out of range", nothing happens and I have to turn the COMPUTER off. Does anyone know why this happens and how I can fix it?Is this a new monitor? If so will it work with the old monitor?

It appears your graphics card/or on board graphics can't
handle the monitor.

What monitor are you using? What graphics card are you using?Does this happen when going into normal mode? (If you can't get into normal mode... then you really must give more information)

I think there is the OPTION to START using default VGA display in the bootup menu. The "out of range " message can apply to either the monitor or graphics card. Either the display resolution or the refresh rate or both is set to HIGH.

Solve : Hosts file, autoplay, startup, & msmessenger p?

Answer»

Hi!
I'm looking for some help. A few DAYS ago, I worked on a friends computer. She was having trouble with varius viruses/malware. So, I did all the normal stuff. (Anti-virus, ad aware, spybot...) It seemed as though I had everything fixed. So, I burned a CD off her computer.
Well, her computer copied *SOMETHING* extra onto the CD. (I believe this was done through "autoplay.exe") I took the CD home, and used it on my personal computer. After that, my computer started to act strangely. Doing much of what my friend's computer was doing. (see below for more details on that)
So again, I tried all the normal things. (Using a seperate comp to access the internet safely, and DL all the newest SOFTWARE updates) To no avail. Thus, I have come here for help.

Symptoms:
1) Hosts file has been re-written to direct all traffic to 64.233.167.104; I can change the file, but it just changes back after a few minutes.

2) Just after booting into Windows, the startup files are altered. (My security programs alert me) It gives up after an hour, but will periodically try to add files to startup. I didn't write the names of the files down but something like: formatsys, serbw, & itwol.

3) Whenever I insert a CD into my CD writer drive, my comp caches "autoplay.exe" & "autoplay.inf" and informs me that I have files 'waiting to be written to disk'. I suspect this contains the virus/worm/whatever it is. As a result, my file browser keeps crashing.

4) Msmessenger was[/b] deactivated. However, this 'virus' has caused it to come back. Furthermore, while it runs, I cannot bring up task manager. (It closes as soon as it is opened) Luckily, I have WinPatrol which allowed me to circumvent this issue.

5) I tried "safe mode". It does nothing but crash the comp. I can't do ANYTHING in "safe mode" without it crashing.

System info:
HP Desktop
Windows XP Home SP1 (haven't been online with this comp in a while)
512 MB RAM
2500 Athalon (2.08 GHZ)

-Dudeman  :-?

P.S.  I can PROVIDE more info if needed!Well,
I did some net-searching, and discovered that I do in fact have a virus/worm. The symptoms match, and I have a fix now. If anyone else has the problems listed above they can probably fix it with...

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixSflog.exe

I'll update if this doesn't work...

-DudemanBest of luck.  Just in case, when you're done, you might want to post a HijackThis log over on the viruses board for everyone to TAKE a quick look at.

Solve : Cant Seem to Reformat my computer!?

Answer»

im am tryin to reformat my computer using an XP Professional CD.  I boot up my computer with the XP cd inside. Everything goes as normal as it boots inton the Windows Setup Screen.  it starts loading all the neccessary files so that it can start the windows setup but then it gets stuck at the "Setup is Starting window" line and it never goes in to the OPTION where I can press Enter to enter setup then press F8 that i understands TOS.  I repeat this process many times and it freezing at the same screen.  Rarely if i get lucky it goes to the Press Enter screen to continue setup  but pressin enter wont do any good as in it freezes at that point.   I have tried to see if this was a CD problem or a hard drive problem by takin my hard drive and the XP CD to my friends house and tried to reformat my computer there.  Everything went smoothly as a normal reformat.   So i took the hard drive home hoping that just by stickin it in to my computer it will load up the OS.  now im getting the error message Missing NTDLR press CTR+ ALT+ DEL to restart.  then i tried to reformat my computer again and the same problem arises as it freezes at the "Setup is Starting Window" line.  Any help would be appecriated.. Im concluding that something is wrong with my BIOs but i need some advice. thanks ALOT!I think your Cd drive is having trouble reading your
Cd but, your friends can read the CD.

Do you have another Install disk you can try?make sure  all the usb external drives (if any) etc are removed and try again.  Or Buy another hard drive  they are cheap now Quote from: Gambit00 on April 12, 2007, 04:22:14 PM

Im concluding that something is wrong with my BIOs but i need some advice. thanks alot!

Why are you concluding this?i dont really know.. im just assumin this since i cant find anything that is wrong with it...btw i didnt change anything in the bios if THATS wat ur assuming.Well, it would certainly be the last on my list of assumptions.

Is the drive seen correctly in the BIOS? If so, download and run the free diagnostics from the appropriate hard drive maker's site. Then post back.  hmm the bios is report out the drive to be 200.1gb with the right info ... i went to western digital site to download its Life Guard v11.2 tool  and burnt it to a cd and ran it on my "broken" computer it boot up a couple line then it said Physical media error then it gives me a command line X:\> like to a dos line but with an X

anyways like i said i did try this hard drive at my friends house with the same xp cd and it worked fine so cant be the hard driveThen try the SeaTools from the Seagate site and try that. I am assuming it is jumpered correctly?

If it fails 2 different diagnostics I would have NO faith in that drive.the hard drive checks out and reformats at friends house ...The only thing I would suggest is that the drive that you run your cd on is having to MUCH problems reading the disk ....If possible try using a different disc drive and see if a different one on that computer will read the disk....and make it continue the set up.....

so try a different disc drive for reading the disk  If it's an XP CD WITHOUT the shiny holograms and MS splattered all over it this might be the issue...

You should be able to right-click on the item in Task Scheduler and select Properties. You will then be able to see what file the scheduled item is invoking. You can also delete the item from there, if necessary.

Solve : Vista back to xp?

Answer»

Hi, I have a Acer Aspire m1640 with VISTA pre-installed , i want to INSTALL xp instead but cannot find xp drivers for the m/board or identify it, ACER does not know what m/board it is and there is no numbers on it, any ideas out there, ta,   swampyIf Acer's site was no help try DLoading Everest Home and running a report...
Save the report as a text file and post the Computer Summary portion here...This has been years ago that I did this but I purchased a new computer with Windows ME which was a disaster. I hated it so much and LIKE you, couldn't find drivers for all the hardware in the system. So, what I did was, format and install Windows 98SE from my installation cd's and let it pick the drivers, etc. for all the hardware and it did. I thought, what did I have to lose and fortunately, everything worked. They may not have been the drivers the manufacturers would have suggested but they worked and with no problems. So, as a suggestion, what do you have to lose? You can always put it back like it was when you purchased it if this doesn't work. But, first make a backup of all important data you want to keep first. There may be some that won't AGREE but it's just a suggestion. HTHWindows 98SE and ME used the drivers.

XP and Vista use completely different driver models.

But as you say the system recovery option is available- perhaps they are simply deciding wether they should waste an afternoon installing an OS when it isn't worth the trouble?Have you tired going into Device Manager and seeing if that tells you the exact model and make of each component and then see if you can go to each manufacturers website to see if there are drivers available, its long winded but it might work if the Acer site doesn't. Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 19, 2009, 05:36:18 AM

It seems suddenly the font on IE on most sites has become  so small that I have to get to within several inches of the monitor in order to read it.

When I click 'view' and 'text size' it already is set to 'the largest'.  Tried to change the font size but it does not work; tried highlighting text in order to change and that did not work.

However, when I came ONTO your site the text was so large I had to cut it down to medium and on IE it worked.  Go figure?

Only thing I have done recently was to install Firefox because of having Flash Player problems on IE.  There are some sites that demand Flash Player in my PC work so needed to find some way to access same.  Though the Flash Player files sit on my PC, for some reason when on IE they are not recognized.

Not sure if the two browsers together are causing the font problems on IE.  Can advise?

Not a definite answer.

How about some troubleshooting.

Uninstall your Firefox & that Flash plugin.

You can easily install them back.Multiple browsers do NOT conflict.

In IE, go Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, click "Reset" button.
Restart computer. It helped one site but others still remain too small to read.  Can advise more?

PS.  I had lost this posting and no sooner had I reposted than I found this thread again.  Will go cancel my second post lest moderators  feel I am double posting.

I have not found any answers on any other forum I've been to.

Will the boot disks made with Partion Magic help me boot into C, after I change the drive letter?

The boot disks made with Partion Magic helps you to boot into DOS or which is available on that boot disk.

You can not boot into WinXP.

I am not recommend to change Windows Drive Letter. But you can try after taking backupIf your programs are also on H: they will not run either as that's where the registry points to as far as location...
This is only one of the fun things that come as a RESULT of a drive letter change.

Solve : Roaming Profile Problems?

Answer»

I am running a roaming profile environment but am having issues with just 1 profile.  With this profile it will keep the default printer on the FAX option rather than staying on the proper printer.  So I thought maybe it was just a BAD profile ( Profile has been in use since October) and deleted it and let the user LOG back in and CREATE a new one.  Set the settings and the user logged off and we CHECKED it again when the user logged back in and the printer was still wrong.  What would cause it not to stay?Did you try to reinstall printer's software?I have deleted the profile from the SERVER so it would have to reinstall the drivers when it rebuilds the profile.  Wouldnt it?  No.Sorry for the extended delay.  I have tried removing the profile from the server.  I have also had the user create a new local profile and we are going to see how it goes after we move that profile to the server.

Solve : windows media player overrides my file names?

Answer»

I am trying to use WMP's function of retrieving track INFORMATION for ripped CDs from the internet, but I WANT to be able to give my own names to the RESULTING audio files.  (For instance, if WMP creates a folder for an opera recording based on the name of one of the artists, I want to change the folder name to the title of the opera.)  My problem is that after RENAMING folders as I wish, the next time I go on line I find that WMP has forced the folders back into the names it thinks they should have.  I cannot find anything in the settings to instruct the player to leave CHANGED folder names as I have defined them.  Anyone know how?  ThanksWhat about:

Tools->Options, Library Tab, and the two radio buttons under the "retrieve additional information from the internet" checkbox?

Set it to "Only add missing information" I would suspect that it might be set to overwrite it all.

You could also disable the automatic retrieval by unselecting the checkbox. You will still be able to right click and select "Find album info" before ripping to populate the track names and other information.

Hope this helps!

USB(Tevion brand) turned into a disk drive. when i clicked on it it said E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is CORRUPTED and unreadable.

I ran chkdsk but when it tried to read my USB it froze and dissappeared. Is there anyway to transfer my stufff out of the USB or to FIX it.Try taking it out and plugging it in again.  Also, your computer suddenly restarting could be overheating.  And what do you mean by "is running halfway"?i tried repluggging it and restarting my computer. I even switched my Usb to a different computer. No it didn't overheat, it was about 10 mins since i turned it on.
Running halfway means that i am using the computer
Still the same problem.

P.S Im running of vista nowI would say its broken if it won't work in another computer1.  Recovery Software.  If it recognizes the device and assigns it a drive letter, I think you have a chance to recover the data.  You could try the "TestDisk" program which runs under many different operating systems and/or from different boot MEDIA, but you'll have to learn how to use it.  It is well DOCUMENTED (so read it), but there is definitely a learning curve to using it.  Suggest you practice on a known good disk drive first, so you know what's normal.  (Don't do any writes to the good disk drive while learning - unless its expendable.)

What you want to do eventually is locate and "copy" the files from the USB device to another disk drive (after you learn how to use the program).

Solve : Windows XP sp3 problem?

Answer»

I followed the MS website instructions for installing SP3.  It did not INSTALL properly and I had to use system restore to clear the junk that had been installed.  Tried again, and again it failed to install correctly, this time I had to reboot from DISC as the system would not start.  Tried a third time and it installed OK, but the system BECAME so slow that I had to uninstall it.  Now I have three bluetooth icons and three add or remove software icons in my control panel. How do I remove the extra icons (you cannot just click on them and choose delete).Either delete the .cpl files from the WINDOWS folder or use tweakui to manage the control panel icons.I installed tweakui and my problems fixed, thanks Alan.
Have a great new year. And you. Glad you're all set.

Solve : Outlook Express junk problem?

Answer»
Hi guys,

I have Outlook Express 6 installed and use Firefox 3.5.6 as a browser on a laptop running Windows XP Home SP3. I've had this problem for a while now. Emails which I receive from people in my address book end up in my junk folder so I get no warning that they have arrived. If I right click on the email in question and choose add sender to address book I get a message which tells me what I already know, that the sender is already in my address book! I'm screaming at the screen if you know they in the address book why are you sending them to the junk folder??? I'd really appreciate a FIX for this one as it's driving me nuts.

AlexI don't know how you could have done it but it sounds like you have linked your span blocker in OE to your address book.

Just start by reviewing your settings in the span blocker and see what it indicates. No I've been through all the settings and they are okay. Not all my contacts are blocked, just some of them. And the ones which are don't always end up in the spam folder. Sometimes they arrive as normal in my inbox. In fact I've had three tonight from a contact and two hit the inbox and one went to the spam folder. Same contact and same address!Does Outlook Express 6 have a built in automatic Junk Filter that I dont know anything about? Are you using a 3rd party spam filter? Do you have message rules that you set up yourself? If so, you are really the only one that knows what those rules contain to make the messages go to a spam folder. You can find those rules by clicking on 'tools' message rules---mail . Then you can select each rule and click on modify to see what they contain. OE does have a blocked senders list, but generally you need to add blocked senders one by one manually.

To look at it in OE:

tools > message rules > blocked sender list

If that doesn't show you anything, you may need to to go the virus forum.I know about blocked senders & mail rules etc. There is nothing contained within those that would make the emails in question go to the spam folder. All the emails that end up in the spam folder have the same ISP. They are all from contacts in Malta and end in onvol.net. Again I have checked the mail rules and blocked senders and nothing there refers to onvol.net. I've been slowly switching to non Microsoft products because of the problems they throw up, plus I'm sick of being used as a beta tester for Microsoft. Since no one seems to have a clue why this is happening I can only assume that it's more rubbish from Microsoft in which case it's probably time to switch to Thunderbird! Quote

So, you have a solid clue to the problem there.  No point in blaming OE and Microsoft for this.  What is the nature of the Message Rules you have in OE?  Rules can be constructed in a variety of WAYS. You can disable rules by unchecking the box next to them. That could be a troubleshooting technique. You could disable all of them and see whether that stops the unwanted behavior. If so, then you need into further investigation to determine which one is causing it.

What anti-virus protection do you have?  Are you using any third-party, add-on spam blocking program?Hi SOYBEAN, I'm not using ant third party spam blockers as I find that AOL do a pretty good JOB at blocking the most of it. Anti-virus is Avast. All my message rules are constructed to look for certain words in message bodies and headers and to delete anything found. I've checked all the rules and nothing there relate in any way to the emails which are being sent to the spam folder. As I said earlier I had  three emails last night from a contact in Malta and two hit the inbox and one went to the spam folder. Same contact and same address!

I still think I'd try this:

Hi soybean, Yeah I agree that I'll have to give that a try and see what HAPPENS. If the messages you are concerned about are from contacts in your address book just make a new mail rule which says "Where the from line contains (people, everyone in your address book) Stop processing more rules" and move the rule to the #1 spot.Yeah that might work, thanks. I'll give it a try.Cruisin 702. You are the man! Just wanted to say thanks. I tried what you suggested and it seems to have worked. Brilliant!

Would that work? What next? Thanks for helping. What do I do now?Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading ALL of it especially the Warnings before starting and printing out a reference copy...

Done properly all your apps and DATA will be intact...
Done improperly everything will be GONE...but you will have a fresh install of XP.Now I'm puzzled.. We tried the disk we have and we get nothing... back to the wallpaper again. Are we doing something not right? You need to read thru those instructions...it's 5 pages.
It includes info on how to boot to a CD.JJ 3000     Said "' tinkerbell - Do you have your XP CD? If you don't have one don't worry, there's more than one way to fix your problem, but the XP CD would be the easiest. ''

If we don't have the cd ( which we have a copy and nothing happened) what other options we have?  You say there's more than one way to fix this . I'm open to anything right now.. My son said there were things on there he needs. Not sure what JJ had in mind...you are going to need a genuine XP CD sooner or later...
At this point it would seem to be sooner. My son went and got the cd and we did a repair and everything is back to normal. We never LOST anything that was on there. Thanks very much for all your help.

Excellent news...tell your Son Good Job ! !

My problems started the other day after I rebooted my PC.
I was getting a message about my Hard Drive issue.
Attempting to boot would lead to Windows not loading and the blue scree appearing.

In my attempt to fix the problem,  I decided to change HD's and start new.

I've run a MEMORY test which seems to show no errors.
Audio and Video are onboard.
I'm really clueless and STUMPED on how to proceed.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ooophs,  I grabbed the disk.   I guess my windows7 disk doesn't install on a BLANK  hd.
I've put my XP disk in and rebooted.  Seems, that the installation process is proceeding.

BDBFollow these steps to fix a Blue Screen in Safe Mode
Once booting start, select "Safe Mode" from the boot menu.
Scan your hard drive by running your antivirus software.  If the program locates an infection, MOVE it to your vault or follow the on-screen INSTRUCTIONS. After program completation, if a virus was removed, attempt to reboot your computer and see if this clears up the problem. If not, restart your computer in safe mode.
Restore your computer to a previous point. Click on the "Start" button. Select "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools" and finally "System Restore". Choose a restore point on or before the last day your computer worked without error. Finally Reboot your computer to see if it loads correctly.

Solve : computer wont boot up or go to safe mode?

Basically what I want to do is to repair/recover my OS so that my system boots up again normally and I wont lose any applications that I have. Problem is when I put in my OS disk, I got to the stage where it asked me if want to do a fresh installl, or a repair INSTALL. I hit 'r' and it asks me for an ADMINISTRATOR password which I have no idea of

How do I repair my stem

its a dell inspiron 2200 laptopHow to Perform a Windows XP Repair Installi saw that and the info there is good.  Question is when do you use a repair install and when do you use the recovery console?  And if you have to use the recovery console, how do you find out what the administrator password is?If you want to do a repair install you need to go to the SECOND repair option. As you've already found out, the first repair option takes you to the recovery console, which will not help you.yes allan, I found out the painstaking way.  But then when is the recovery console used, and whenever it is, how does one know what the administrator password is.  I read on the net that you right click on my computer, go to manage, and then look for local users and groups under system tools and thats where the administrator password is listed, but there is no 'local users and groups' in the manage settings
The default is NO password - just press ENTER when asked for the password. And if you do the repair install it will insure the password is reset to blank. Quote from: shashgo on October 21, 2009, 11:05:19 PM

Question is when do you use a repair install and when do you use the recovery console?  And if you have to use the recovery console, how do you find out what the administrator password is?

1. When do you use...  It depends upon the problem.  You need to gather more "DATA" and research the results to determine which way to go.  In this case, I wonder whether you've MISSED or are ignoring a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

2.  Administrator Password.  For an "unknown" administrator password you:
     a.  Ask the owner of the computer.
     b.  Crack the password.
     c.  Reset the password (if it was not used to "encrypt" files).
     d.  Bypass the password.

3.  Which Operating System?  Is this Windows XP Home Edition, Professional, or Media Center Edition?allan:  Thanks,  I never thought to just press enter.  Ill try it.

dahlar:  There was a BSOD, but I cannot reproduce it.  This time the computer just hangs when I reboot.  Does the recover option do anything else that the repair option doesnt do, I mean why is the recover option even present if you c an do a repair and end up with a happy system?

It is winXP Professional editionRepair Install will reinstall Windows without deleting any installed programs, however, it will require reinstalling all service packs and updates.

Recovery Console can do diagnosis and repair of HARD drive file system/boot issues (fixmbr, fixboot, chkdsk).  Enter the Recovery Console and type Help.  See more here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

Solve : How Can decrypt this MD5 hash string?

Answer»

i have a string i want to DECRYPT this hash string, i search online but no database can decrypt this? give me direction what should i do?You can't, that's the whole point. I can't think of any good reason why you'd want to do this anyway. There isn't any information "encrypted" in an MD5 has string. It's just a hex number. MD5 is not an encryption, but a hash. The difference between encryption and hash is that with an encryption algorithm it is a 2-way process encrypt<->decrypt. With a hash this is a 1-way process, there is no decryption possible.
MD5 hashes can not be "decrypted" but you can try to look them up in a rainbow table.

Here are some sites that support this:
http://tools.benramsey.com/md5/
http://gdataonline.com/seekhash.php
http://hashcrack.com/index.php
http://plain-text.info/

I saved plain-text.info for last because although it is defiantly the best, it may take it a long time to find you hash.

Its also important to note that depending upon the seer randomness of your original string none of these databases my have the hash.

Good luck!a Rainbow table only helps of the has itself is generated using something sort and easily indexable.

a rainbow table isn't going to help rebuild a file out of it's MD5 hash. It will only work on something that is often shorter and contains english words such as a password. We don't help crack passwords, which would be exactly what we would be doing if that is the case. Which I suspect it is.

of course since any self-respecting password hash has EITHER moved away from MD5 or is using MD5 with salts (which makes rainbow tables nearly useless) I doubt it's a password. Or if it is the OP isn't well-versed in the method used to create the hash. (this is implied given they seem UNAWARE of the one-way nature of a hash FUNCTION).

Solve : Internet Monitors Always Show Busy?

Answer»

America's Army 3 came out with a new update on the weekend which now I cannot play because I lag so much.
I cleaned my hard drive up a bit and got a registry cleaner and a few other tools to help me.
Now I do tweak the game to get the best out of it and it has always worked in the past up until now.
But I have noticed my internet monitors always showing busy which has got me stumped to why.
Yes I do have 3 other computers hooked up to my modem but most of the TIME only 2 are going and it has never really interfered before.
I did manage to stop the busy signal yesterday when I cleaned registry but after a game or two it started again, so my game was running fine for a few rounds there.
I TRIED to do the registry thing again but it didn't work this time.
What could be wrong please help as I know my computer can handle this game and would like to get back to playing with my clan. And yes we are an australian clan and have australian servers. Server is NSW and I am in Perth WA. Your best bet is to leave registry cleaners alone...period.
If any machine much less 3 of them are CONNECTED then you are going to see network activity...

It could be ANYTHING from apps phoning home for updates to email checks etc....
I wouldn't worry about it...but i would worry about reg cleaning apps if i were you...I have had 2 computers hooked up before and it has never shown it, only now since moving I have hooked 2 more up but more for storage and sons laptop for school but her hardly uses it always on ps2. Just seems strange that it is all of a sudden.
And yer ok thx for heads up about reg cleaners.

Edit: When I unplug sons laptop from net it FIXES it so that means there is something wrong with his because it's off but in stand by mode and erthnet was still plugged in.

Solve : How to determine which files exist in one folder tree versus another??

Answer»

We have a number of LAPTOPS using Windows XP SP3 and an NAS (NETWORK attached storage device) acting as a network DRIVE.

Here's the scenario:  I have all documents from various computers backed up on my network drive.  Over time. the directory structures have been renamed, moved, reorganized, etc.  What I need to know is whether or not there exists any document files in any subdirectory on my laptop that do NOT exist anywhere on the network drive.

I've tried some directory compare tools, like WinDiff and WinMerge, but they seem to take path into account when COMPARING.  So, ever if the same file exists in a different location on the network, these tools will report it as missing, since the path to the file is different than what's on my laptop.

I thought about using DupFiles (a duplicate file finder) in combination with a full upload of all document files on my laptop , but that will take ages, as I have thousands of documents.  Plus, DupFiles seems to randomly choose the file which is considered the original, and so if I used it to delete the DUPLICATES, I would end up with files scattered all over the place, causing me more grief.

Any suggestions on a Windows command or different tool I can use to accomplish this?  Alternatively, maybe some suggestions on how to better use the tools I've already tried?

Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to install XP SP3 on a machine at work but I keep getting an error that reads "Setup cannot copy the file setup_wm.exe.  Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert 'Windows XP System Files' in the drive you specify.  Copy files from c:\program files\windows media player."

Does anyone have any suggestions?Check, if your system files are OK...

Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista/7).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista/7, most likely, you won't need it).
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista/7 case).
I would suggest you download the network installation package of Windows XP SP3, as I've found this is the most reliable WAY depending on your internet connection speed, and also you can keep it as backup or use on multiply pcs. It's however a larger overall download.

WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (316.4MB)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&displaylang=en

You can use a download manager to help you resume and/or segment download. If it doesn't grab the file at first, simply cancel and your'll get 'If your download does not start after 30 seconds, click here:' appear on the webpage, right click the 'Start download' link and copy the url into your manager.

Ensure it's the correct filesize and fully downloaded.

When running it should VALIDATE its file STRUCTURE and the current OS installed.
Ok ... I tried the scf /scannow.  I got a message that read, "Windows cannot find 'scf'.  PLEASE make sure you typed the name correctly and try again.  To search for a file, click the Start Button and then click Search."Okay,  you need to start by paying attention. The command is sfc NOT scfCopy/paste works always better, than typing by hand.

It may also be due to thermal EVENTS. Make sure it is internally clean and ventilations are not block from dust, dirt. Check also power adapter if its not loose or faulty.

Solve : yellow marks different computer?

If you're replacing a sound card...why not try to find out what's wrong with your current one first?  It looks like you're having a driver ISSUE with the one that's currently in your system.
Your questions Saviour LEAD me to think.....
So lets stand BACK for a minute and have a look.

If a motherboard has a sound jack attached and visible from the rear of the case, to connect say speakers, to spk jack and a microphone to the mic jack and so on,... then does it also have to have some circuit board attachable unit actually in/on the motherboard, (eg like the one pictured but the proper one)?

and if it doesnt is this called the onboard sound...

or is the mere fact that the computer has these insertable sockets for line, mic auxillary and speaker at the rear of the case mean that it has a sound (card/system).

or am I just not seeing "the sound card". The view of photo's above show slots and the case cut outs and no added CARDS, also the cut outs are all intact, so no units have been installed in the slots that require the removal of any cut out.

My neighbour is back now, (the one I bought the computer from), so I can ask him some of these questions and maybe get a sound card from him to INSTALL. I'll ask him next chance I get.
Thanks again everyone.I'll get back to you when I get a sound card.CURED.. my neighbour had a little USB plug-in device, no bigger than your thumb, called "3D SOUND" cost $5.00 AU.
The computer plays sounds through all modes. So it seems that there is a problem on the motherboard with the sound system.
I apologize for the long delay in response, work got a little hectic for a while....( got to get it while its there ) but thank you all for your support with these issues.
Each ANSWER should have worked in their own right, however I think there is some issue with the motherboard that caused this problem in the first place.

Regardless we found a satisfactory solution to the problem, once again thank you all.

Solve : XP Pro: Processes wont stop automatically?

Answer»

I have noticed an odd thing, when i close an application the process will still be running in task manager and i have to manually stop it. this includes windows its self and when i close windows it makes me end svchost.exe manually. This is starting to eat up my CPU USAGE and annoying me since i don't know all the process names of all the applications i run. is there any way to stop this, i think it may have something to do with my commit charge which is capped at 7515M.

i am using a Style note laptop with windows XP  Professional version 2002 with service pack 3, Intel core duo t9300 2.49ghz with 3 GB ram and had a NVIDA Quadro 1600m graphics card with 512Mb dedicated.

Sometimes, after closing a program, it takes a few moments for its process to stop.
Any particular program you have in mind? Quote

when i close windows it makes me end svchost.exe manually
What exactly do you MEAN here?i understand it may take a few minutes to stop a process but it never stops i noticed that i was playing soulstorm and 2 days later without playing it the process was still running. this happens with all processes including autodesk inventor, firefox, itunes media player classic and windows media player.

If i shut down my laptop then after a while some things end but i will get a message saying program not responding svchost.exe and in order to shut it down i have to click end now if i don't the program never ENDS and the laptop never turns off.Every time you start the computer, the problem continues?

When did the problem start?
What did you do before the problem? (downloads, installs, hardware changes, ect...)

If you go to Start --> Run --> Type msconfig and press Enter. Go to the Startup Tab and list the Startup Item Names here.Is there a CD in the tray ? ?Ive only had the laptop for about 2 months so it could have come with the problem, but i only noticed it about a month ago but the amount of things Ive downloaded just because its new and needs the software i had on my old one is too large to tell if its because of that. It also happens whenever the computer is on regardless of how long its been on for.

i have a CD in the CD drive but its just a DVD. i always have a DVD in it, just in case i want to watch a film in an obscure place

Try removing the CD and see what happens.

Also, go into Safe Mode and see if the problem remains.

Solve : Do I need a Boot Disk if I have the Full install of an OS??

Answer»

Just wondering.

ThanksDepends on age of system!!!

Some older systems do not support booting from CD or DVD, and for these systems you may need to boot from floppy. Laptops were the last to follow this boot ABILITY. I have some older TOSHIBA Pentium II and early Pentium III systems that do not support booting from CD.

Most systems 8 years old or newer support booting from CD Rom after post. You may just need to edit the boot order in the BIOS to be CD before HD.

There always comes a time when you will need one...
I'd order one from the manuf. before that system gets any older.

Solve : windows hard drive slaved into other pc to get files?

Answer»

My windows hard drive gave me and error and now will not boot past the Windows XP splash screen.  I have tried LKGC, safe mode, and all the other tips Microsoft has.
I have now pulled the hard drive from lap top and put it in an external usb case so that I can READ it on my other COMPUTER.  I can access the drive fine except for 2 folders.  The file is at C:\documents and settings\(FOLDER name)  This is my "my documents" folder.
You should know that the hard drive (from my laptop) is password protected.  This is the only account on the hard drive.  There is an administrator account also, but I am also the administrator of the hard drive.  There is no administrator pswd.  The only password to the hard drive when it was in the pc is to log in to my account.
When I click on the folder, I get an access denied error.
Question:  Am I getting access denied because of the password?  If so, how do I enter the pswd, since it does not ask me for it, and when I right click there is no option for it?
Thanks for any advice or help you can offer.Try right click, choose properties. On the SECURITY tab, click advanced. Click the owner tab. Try to take ownership of the folder. Good Luck. How to Take Ownership

I'll try that and report back. Keeping my fingers crossed.I tired it and it says it said could not FIND %stemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe. Afterwords I went to shut it down and had this pop up..

Profile Storage Space

you have exceeded your profile storage space. Before you can log off, you need to move some items from your profile to network or local disk.

This is the first time I have ever seen this pop up. I am getting the feeling I am screwed with this comp.I'm not sure, what else I can tell you.

Solve : How do I get rid of Multiple versions of the OS ??

Answer»

I'm running WIN XP Pro SP2 on a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD
Some weeks ago I had a problem of computer not booting, giving a message "could not find Operating SYSTEM" or something like that (don't remember precisely).  HDD was working fine (tested with Seagate disk tools for DOS) so thought MBR MIGHT be corrupt.  Tried to use installation CD to repair/restore the MBR but instead it installed a completely new VERSION of XP Pro alongside the old.  I did that twice !!!
Then the original version of XP started working fine and so I edited Boot.ini to remove the no-longer-needed choice of the two new versions of XP Pro.  Everything works fine except I now have three sets of "Windows" folders:  "Windows", "Windows 0" and "Windows 1" and three sets of Documents and Settings, etc., etc., so I am wasting space with all these extra versions of the OS and worry about implications of all that clutter.  How can I get rid of the two unneeded versions of XP without interrupting my good and trusted primary version and all its associated Documents and Settings ?You edited the boot.ini that's fine it will remove windows from boot menu but it will not delete windows in this case you need to format you drive completely in which all windows resides and reinstall a complete new copy. Quote from: tom han on November 17, 2010, 11:46:04 PM

Thanks.  That's exactly what I would like to avoid, I have too much invested in my "good" version of XP.  There's no such thing as an "uninstall" for a whole OS I suppose.  Is there any danger in living with it as it is ?Just boot to the version of Windows you want to keep and delete the other two Windows Folders from within Windows Explorer. Don't worry, Windows will not let you delete the OS which is running. Thanks Allan.  I'll try that. Not entirely successful.  There are two stubborn Flash9 files in one of the unwanted System32 folders which deny access whenever I try to delete them or change their ATTRIBUTES to delete them.  Not a big deal I suppose but there's a whole tree of empty folders to support those two files.  I guess I am a bit of a tidy freak and want to get that cleaned up.  Ho-hum !!Try taking ownership (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421). If that doesn't work, try unlocker (http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/)i think you should get HIRENS CD to clean the other XPsFeel free to ignore the above post.
