Solve : Windows Not Booting Up?

Answer»

I have the same problem. This forum has been very helpful. Quote from: Parry on November 15, 2010, 04:55:24 AM

Luckily enough after searching AROUND have been able to trace out the Pack of CD's that CAME with the Laptop.

Tried using the OS CD (XP Home SP2) as per the method in
Am able to move till Step 4 and getting stuck at Step 5, after accepting the License Agreement I am not getting the 'R' option.

That's because it's an OEM CD that will effectively wipe all your data and take the machine back to Day One status...

If this is not what you want you need to let US know before going any further...

Otherwise all bets are off...This CD came with the Laptop.

Solve : Computer can't locate Iomega 100 zip drive?

Answer»

For a while now I haven't been able to get my computer to locate my Iomega 100 zip drive. It isn't a devastating predicament but obviously it is something I would like to be able to MAKE use of. Otherwise I have to use floppy discs to back up data (which is plainly absurd for most of my stuff) or burn a CD, which, though inexpensive, just seems a waste.
It's possible that my SCSI card, which is how my zip drive connects to my computer, was damaged during repair work done a while ago. I wouldn't know how to tell one way or the other.
I use Windows 98 (yes, how funny...) and my computer was built (more or less) for me by a store which WENT out of business a while ago. I bought the computer in 2002.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer to me.Have you tried re-installing the drivers ? ?
Re-boot afterwards.
You could also try removing the card and re-seating it...I didn't realize people still used those things. Had a peak at Iomega's website though, LOOKS like they still make them, but couldn't locate a SCSI MODEL. They only had ATAPI and USB, unless I overlooked something.Yes, I did reinstall the drivers, tried to look for updates to the drivers, turned the switches on the zip on-off, off-on, this, that and the other. Zilch, nada, bupkiss!
I didn't try removing and reinstalling the card though. Being the klutz that I am, I'm a little hesitant to try it but then again I really have nothing to lose at this point. Quote from: StickyR on June 15, 2008, 10:08:00 AM

Does the drive itself appear to be functioning? It might have just gone south.Iomega Zip drives are famous for being unreliable.
When was the last time this drive WORKED? Have you tried it on another machine?

Have you thought of getting a USB external drive for your backups?

Iomega can hold only 100 megs....external drive can be gigs big. And they are cheap to buy.

Solve : Spreadsheets.?

Answer»

Today I switched from windows me to xp but I cannot get the .xlr spreadsheet files to open on windows xp. I got a copy of office 2000 but can't open the file. Is there a EASY program I can download to edit .xlr files from me to xp. They are kind of important. If there is no way of editing I just to view them so I can make the same spreadsheet. If I'm reading your post right, the problem isn't GOING from me to xp, but going from Works to Excel.

.xlr is a Works format where .xls is the Excel extension and they are not compatible.

If you still have access to Works you can go into each file and do save as and save it as an .xls file.Excel Viewer will WORK...FREE

You can ALSO DLoad and install Open Office to work with those files...Also FREE

Should help until you can update Office...THANKS for the quick reply, I will try excel and for open office do you mean from here.

Solve : Flash BIOS via USB with No O/S?

Answer»

I 'am trying to flash bios via usb with no O/S I would LIKE to know the step by step process if anyone can help out that would be great! Not every computer's bios can be updated through USB.  You'll have to check the Manufacturer's website for what update options are available for your system.

Why do you want to update the bios ?having an issue with windows 7 install it freezes after first INTIAL copying of files screen then just stays at that screen. I used hp format utillity to made my usb bootable, downloaded the bios update executable, now it says find DOS files to add i dont know which dos files i need .Before messing with the bios to fix this problem try a few other things first.

Check the installation media for SCRATCHES and or smudges and clean if possible.  Reseat all the power and data cables, reseat the system's ram.  Blow the dust out of the system.  Try the install on another hard drive.  If none of that works try swapping in another power supply of equal/greater wattage.  A failing power supply can have a variety of effects on computers.absolutely actually this is a laptop iam working on and someone had told me that it was a mobo issue something to do with the hard drive controller was not sure wanted another opinionOh it's a laptop... Ok

That does MAKE it more difficult to isolate the problem.

let's see..   Without bringing it to a tech SOMEWHERE and paying money, you're going to have to put some work into this.  Test the voltage output of the charger first, with a volt meter.  Battery may not be working well and charger may be under par.  Always have to check for power problems.  No power, no dice, period.

Pull the ram and re-seat that.  Re-seat the hard drive.. You can access both of them most likely from the bottom of the laptop.  Sometimes there is one stick of ram under the keyboard.  Try with only one stick of ram, and each stick in a different slot.  You can run MemTest86 but changing the ram around is quicker. In other words if it work with only one ram module installed then you can bet the other module is bad. You can tell if the hard drive controller is bad by hooking the drive up to another computer with an adapter and testing it in that machine.  If it works then the drive is good, and the controller on the laptop is likely an issue.

Do these things and try the install again.  If you've gotten this far and still not working, you're going to have to take the laptop apart for further troubleshooting... If you want to go down that road let me know I'll try to help.

Quote from: cwcomputerconnections on March 20, 2012, 10:56:15 PM

someone had told me that it was a mobo issue

That "someone" we hear so much about. Is this a pressed (not burned) actual Microsoft Windows 7 install disc? I used hp format utillity to made my usb bootable, downloaded the bios update executable, now it says find DOS files to add i dont know which dos files i need .

Netbug removed. Why are you flashing the BIOS ? ?

Just curious...I believe he thinks it's a solution to his problem installing Windows.

A BIOS flash is NEVER a solution to installing Windows.
But that's just my opinion...others may be along shortly...
If it was working before and he's re-installing for whatever reason the last place to look for a solution would be the BIOS.That's pretty much what we told him.

Solve : Failed reinstall of Windows XP, no clue what went wrong?

Answer»

This is about a Dell Inspiron 530s running WINDOWS XP Home Edition SP2. I have the re-installation CD. I got a virus and after trying just about everything else I could I tried to do a clean installation of Windows XP. It got about half way through, wiped the old installation and was reinstalling when it said that it couldn't find some of the files. I tried to restart the re-installation but now when I tell it to boot from the CD it says "No boot device available
SATA-0: Installed
SATA-1: Installed
SATA-4: None
SATA-5: None".
I'm not sure what else I can try to do. I don't know if I can just get a new hard drive or if there is a way to get a new Windows XP install CD, or I just have to get a new computer. Any help would be great, since I don't have the money to take it into a repair shop. Thank you.
1) You should be using SP3 not SP2 (which has nothing to do with the problem you're facing, but I'm just saying.....)
2) Do you have the sata drivers for your hd?Since I don't know what the sata drivers are, I'm not sure.
I have a CD that says the contents are device drivers and diagnostics and utilities.  I thought that I had to reinstall the operating system before I could install any of the drivers.
And now that I've been searching the web for a way to fix my PC I know that I should have installed SP3, but my installation CD is for SP2 and I don't know where to buy just the Windows XP OS anymore.
The SATA drivers are actually on the MBoard Driver CD that came with the machine.
Very early on in the install process of XP you will see a prompt "Press F6 to install additional Drivers"...
Do so then insert the MBoard Driver CD.....it should auto-detect and install them.

Best of Luck.

PS SP3 is available as 1 DLoad so you can grab that and do it after the XP install finishes successfully.I never saw the prompt to press F6 and I never got a CD that is labeled MBoard Driver. I insert the XP installation CD and press F12 to get the boot menu  and tell it to boot from the CD. Then it gives the following message,
"No boot device available
SATA-0: Installed
SATA-1: Installed
SATA-4: None
SATA-5: None"Is it an original XP CD? If so, set the cd drive as the first boot OPTION in bios and boot to the XP CD. You shouldn't have to press any keys. Travel to your MBoard manuf. site and grab the appropiate WinXP SATA drivers.
If you have a floppy drive put them on a floppy...otherwise burn them to a CD.

It's interesting that the XP CD won't boot.....what does it say on the cover ? ?
You may not have the CDROM set as the 1st boot device in the BIOS which would need to be done 1st.The XP CD says, "Operating System, Already installed on your computer, Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. The software is already installed on your computer. Only use this CD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell computer."
It is an original XP CD, it came with the computer when I bought it.http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/index.htmSet the optical drive as your first boot device in bios.I tried again to boot from the XP re-intsallation CD. This time it started to run the setup. Setup had 64% of the files copied when the screen said "setup cannot copy the file: syssetup.d11". I told it to retry twice and got the same message. can I skip this and still try to finish the setup or will that make the setup not work? Why can't it copy the file? It gave me the same message for file: tapi32.d11 and when I told it to retry it worked. Is this something wrong with the XP CD?Possibly...try cleaning it with a lint free cloth.....do NOT rub it in circles rather from the center outwards. These issues seem to indicate a problem with the hard drive.  If the Dell setup doesn't offer an option for testing, get the drive MANUFACTURER's diagnostics here:  http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

You might find the Dell Utility partition accessible a number of ways:  http://www.goodells.net/dellutility/index.htm
How can I run any tests when there is no OS on the computer? Should I take the risk and just buy a new hard drive or should I buy a new computer that will come with new installation CDs?

Solve : Totally do not understand computers but am afraid I have a problem..?

Answer»

Hello - today when I got home and turned on my computer I could not GET to my yahoo mail, thought that was odd, only get a screen that says hi michelle and a search box.  When I went to facebook I just get the box, empty with a search box. When I went to the bank of america sign in page I can not get the sign in section just a blank box.  Then I went to the state website to check my accounts and have only two options, neither of which I need. Am concerned there is something wrong as there are little things wrong at each SITE.  Does this make sense and does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this and how I fix it?   Thanks in advanceSorry I have a windows xp, would it even be a windows problem?  Computer turns on and off fine, can navigate around ok, just can't get into things I usually do. Any ideas?  Can't remember how to get into safe mode to see if it is a problem with my computer.  Please someone help me, I am really lost!If I go to bank of america online PERSONAL banking there is just a blue box, nowhere to sign in, since there seems to be lots of little glitches, I am assuming it is my computer....It may be a browser problem. What browser are you using (Including version)? It may be time for an update. What protection apps do you have on that machine ? ?
When was the last time you updated and ran the scans ? ?I see this is marked solved.  How was it solved?Good question...
It's possible as a new User they clicked the wrong item...Someone must have reset it. I don't see this as solved.

Until you get your machine fixed do not use it to login to any bank accounts. Just in case it has a virus (keylogger) you don't want to CAUSE problems with your bank.

What web browser do you use? If its INTERNET explorer try to open the tools drop down and look for options then click the security tab and click the botton to reset all settings. Then try to go to a web site you were having trouble with other then a bank.

hlo , m vikas i run primary sch. in a remote area n m planing to build comp lab. My basic requirement on pc  is MS OFFICE.
Are there solutions and technologies that can reduce my per pc cost. Also pls. give me the min hardware requirements compatible
with windows XP. I would b highly grateful for a bst sol.thnksIf you only need the comps to be able to use office, then you could probably go with some Pentium IIIs. You can get these on ebay. Then, just buy one copy of XP and then clone the HDDs. Make sure all the comps are the same.Whoa - there are EULA's to take into account. The license for XP is one system - period. You can contact Microsoft and discuss your situation or purchase a corporate license.Use Norton Ghost or another application to clone the OS to multiple pcs as Linux711 said, but buy a volume license (or multiple licenses). You can volume license MS Office as well and clone it across with the OS as well if you wish. Businesses and Netcafes do it all the time (just remember the licensing).Personally  i would do a search on google for "unattended installs"...
But that's just me... Quote from: vikas pant on October 14, 2010, 04:21:33 AM

since this is for a school, inquire about academically priced software.  It could save you a lot of money. You can buy PIII computers with 80GB HD and 512 MB RAM.
I would advise that while buying PCs, make sure that they have same brand and configuration. It will help you to save a lot of time in installation of the softwares in future. You can use cloning, disk imaging etc. Quote from: Allan on October 14, 2010, 06:28:38 AM

But teachers force that "creation science" nonsense on kids.

where does this occur? Not the U.S or Canada, to my knowledge. (except in private schools, probably)I hate to say it, but in some school districts, primarily in the southeastern US, the school board requires teachers to talk about "creation science" in conjunction with evolution.Finding 15 100% identical PIII PCs would be no easy task.

Vikas, do you have some kind of budget per PC (or for the whole project)? Knowing this would help a lot in making suggestions on what you can afford.

Instead of going with used parts that will most likely have no warranty, there are a number of options out there that are inexpensive and capable of running Office. One of the Acer shops down the road from me had some Acer computers on sale for $150 for a while, including the monitor but excluding Windows. At prices like that, you could get 15 of those with Windows and a basic Office suite for under $6000.

You could save even more if you considered switching to a free Office-type program, such as OpenOffice or Lotus Symphony, both of which are compatible with Microsoft Office files.you can buy old refurbished PCs from a wholesaler- best way to get 15 near identical PCs. I've seen them for as little as $80 each.
minimum Pentium 3 (1 ghz),  256 mb ram, 20Gb hdd to run XP.

Solve : attempting to contact localhost?

Answer»

I'm trying to do some work locally on a Web calendar that I've downloaded. My desktop computer is doing fine with it using the URL localhost/default (in Firefox with XP). My laptop (same setup) gives the error "The connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost."Well, this means that your application's (web calendar?) server module doesn't work on your laptop. Your http service is not WORKING = "connection refused".
Maybe you have to SET up the application (maybe you forgot to set up something) or reinstall the application (after uninstalling it, of course).Or maybe I didn't double-click fast enough and the application didn't start when I thought it had.

Duh! I believe that's what HAPPENED, but I wouldn't have TRIED again without reading your note. Thanks, viking, it's working fine now. (Muttering about how I could have been so dumb...)

Solve : can't reinstall XP or format c:...etc?

Answer»

Hi-
I have an HP Compaq laptop upon which I contracted some manner of virus (erased my mp3s, seems to raise the KB USED by csrss.exe... but these are just my guesses)

It screwed things up enough that i decided to wipe the HDD and reinstall XP

Loads things for a while, then i GET a black screen SAYING it can't continue, to run the chkdsk utility to see if the HDD is corrupt.

I tried to format c: from the MSDOS command line- it warns me of file loss, i type y. It says it can't format because the volume is in use by another process, would i like to force? I type y- it says volume still in use, cannot lock the drive.

I'd appreciate any direction or advice as to how to proceed?
thanks very much
lessslook dear u cannot format c: drive from the c: drive itself , it wld be lik killing urself with a knife .

if u want to completely reinstall a new Windows , without thinking abt the data in the c: drive u can do one thing ----
. Make a boot able C.D/Floopy.
. Go to bios and change the first boot device to C.D / Floopy.
. Now boot from the C.D/ Floopy here only operating system is there , from here u can format c: .
. now u can reinstall windows from ur own c.d

bi
Try downloading Utimate Boot CD.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ultimate_Boot_CD_Basic_d4019.htmlthanks you guys-
yes, i did figure out the formatting drive from drive itself problem. I'll try the knife thing you suggest later....
=)

I have a bootable cd- of XP, the reinstall disk. But whenever i try to install from this disk my machine either dies (just all turns off) or I get to the black screen described above.  Is the problem in the disk or in my machine?

Is that the right question to be asking??
I'll check out the ultimate bootable, thanks again!Does this XP CD have a bunch of shiney holograms all over it or is it a sharpie written title ? ?
no sharpie, unless i accidentally rubbed it off while licking the back of the cd to get it to work?

it's a Dell reinstallation cd, XP Home.
yeah, and it's a hp laptop. but xp home was originally on this machine and i entered the product key from machine and cd seemed to work fine, in fact it went all the way thru once (i know because i was running Pro, now i have Home). but virus came along, and when i try to reinstall and leave all old files it keeps dyin'I don't want to dissapoint you but you can't use a Dell Recovery CD to reinstall XP on an HP machine...disappoint me??

i would argue with you here- if that cannot be done, why am i currently running XP Home instead of the XPPro that i've had before? Quote from: lesss on April 08, 2008, 03:43:12 PM

disappoint me??

i would argue with you here- if that cannot be done, why am i currently running XP Home instead of the XPPro that i've had before?

By all means feel free to argue with me...i'm not always right and don't profess to be.
However i'd say you got lucky.

way to live up to your 'arguing with a woman' statement!

granted there is far more 'luck' happening here than there is 'skill'- but i'm a fairly good researcher, which is why i'm feeling like i have some ground to stand on.  but this is neither here nor there... if indeed it did install, why can I not reinstall?

hmmm it reinstalled but it brought over some of my old files
(if it is not clear, i meant no disrespect)It wasn't taken that way...I may be a late comer to this post..... but since I was out here looking for answers to my own issues and have found out some things that I did not know I thought I'd pass the recent knowledge I have ATTAINED -- thus far....  still working on my issue which I will list at the end and if anyone has any suggestions,,,,,  believe me I will be glad to hear them...

One if you have a Dell you can use the disk you have -- but it will not work for an HP....  that would be like trying to put a Ford transmission in a Chevy....   they are two different animals... regardless of what you have herard.
Two  ... you can not format C:  if you are in C: ..... like a previous post said you need to go to the bios and set the machine to boot first from the CD drive ...... to do this press F2 when the machine is starting up and look for Boot options there to change them.
Three .... Be aware that the installation disk(s) sometimes do no have the drivers on it...........  This brings up a whole new set of issues......  you need to go to the support site for your particular machine and get the drivers........  this task is not as easy as it sounds

WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY ON GOING PROBLEM
I had a virus........ tried to install Norton.... the machine was having so many issues dealing with the Trojan Virus that when Norton attempted to restart after it's upgraded install .... the machine died !!!!!   So yep....... I lost everything!!  Reinstalled Windows from my Dell disk and had no drivers .....  so I hooked up my laptop and downloaded the drivers from Dell.... well then guess what .... I DON'T KNOW HOW TO INSTALL THEM -  its not like they have an .exe file with them and the machine will not allow me to go to Device manager and install them there either.  I tried to just copy them to the C: drive and go to update drivers and that would not work either......

SO IF ANY ONE COULD BE SO KIND AS TO GIVE ME ANOTHER AVENUE TO GO DOWN - I'LL TRY IT.... THANKS  cOnFuSeD.......  CINDY   [email protected]

Solve : Do bootable disks have to be floppy??

Answer»

I need to download a bootable disk, and WOULD find it easier to do it on CD, as opposed to floppies, because my working COMPUTER is a laptop.  Must it be the old floppies?

Just FYI, I have the unmountable boot volume error on my HP desktop.  I can not find my Windows XP CD, if it came with ONE. So I need to make a bootable disk to get into the Recovery Console.

You can use a bootable floppy image to make a bootable CD-ROM or DVD-ROM.

There are lots and lots of guides on the web, as you will see if you type make bootable CD into Google.

This one seems PARTICULARLY clear

Do this. Put the wireless card drivers on the flash drive and install it to the laptop.
Then you can download the rest of the drivers.

Also, CPU = Central PROCESSING Unit. Laptop = Laptop.      Did you enter you internet information to config it to connect?

Solve : Computer crashed, boots only to a blank screen, is data recoverable??

Answer»

Hi,

So I have a Windows XP computer from Toshiba, that is 2 years old.  It has been freezing up and so I've been having to push the power BUTTON to restart it.  Except this last time when I did that, it restarted to a black screen, and the only thing I could see was the mouse pointer (and I could move it around).  I tried restarting it again several times after that, and Windows would give me 2 options, to start windows normally, or to start it from my last good CONFIGURATION.  Neither of these work.  Even in the safe mode, it shows only a black screen with safe mode on the corners.  It boots up to the windows page, but does not get as far as the login page before going to the black screen.  Right now I am most concerned with getting my data off of the hard drive, since I have 60gb worth of stuff on it.  I looked up some articles that recommended moving the hard drive to another computer, but I don't know how to do that.  What should I do?  I was planning on using the recovery disk to format the drive anyways, since I just got a new Mac, but not before I got all my important data off!  So my question is, is there a way to get this data?  And how should I go about it, whether it be moving the hard drive or not. Please help!  And thanks a lot!Welcome to the CH forums.

So far we know you have a  Toshiba computer running Win.XP and that you do not know how to remove the hard drive.  We don't know whether you have a desktop computer, a laptop or a NOTEBOOK and  we can't tell you how to remove the hard drive because the process is different for each one.

Please read this and come back with the information.

Hi,

I have a laptop, it's a Satelite, a105.  I'm running windows xp, and the most recent software change I did before the crash happened was I uninstalled a language program.  The computer I plan to put the harddrive on to get the data will either be a macbook (the recent one) or a gateway notebook running windows xp.

Thanks!I wouldn't suggest the MacBook...2 different beasts.

You're best bet is to hook it up to a Desktop running Windows XP.
Installing it in another laptop the CHANCES it will boot are slim to none.

Get one of these : laptop 2.5"HDD to IDE connector

You DO NOT want to attempt to boot to this drive if data recovery is your goal.Okay, I do have another desktop running Windows XP that I could put the hard drive in, but how do I get the hard drive out of my laptop, and plug it into the desktop?  (The reason I want to do this is because I read somewhere that by doing this I could retrieve the files on the hard drive by using explorer to get them.)See steps 1 thru' 4 here.

Good luckhi,

i just ordered an enclosure for the hard drive.  which i'm going to try first before attempting to plug it straight into another computer.

thanks, for the tutorial!Seeing how enclosures are around 20 + Bucks and USB is less reliable for data transfer especially when you may get only one shot at it i can't comprehend why it gets recommended here more OFTEN than the 5 dollar item i listed...

Oh well.Oh well, does it make any difference that the link I posted shows it's a SATA drive?   I hope the enclosure covers ide and sata.

the enclosure is sata, but i only ordered it because i'm afraid to take my desktop apart since i don't really know how to install a hard drive, and the case seemed easier... it worked! thanks for the help! Excellent outcome, thanks for coming back to report your success.

Good luck

Solve : Local disk D - first missing, now not functioning?

Answer»

My disk D, with all of my pictures, music, documents has basically ceased to work a couple of days ago.

It all started out with my system just randomly shutting down on me sometime on Sunday. I could not turn the pc on for a while, but after some trials I managed to get it up and running again. However, when I turned it on, my disk D was missing in the My Computer window. I tried all sorts of things to find out whether it was an operating system error or something with my hardware, though I still really have no clue. After the attempts with checking the op system, disk D still didn't show up. It wasn't until today I changed the wires connecting my drive to the motherboard that it actually popped up in the My Computer window. I can't open it though! Upon clicking on it, it reads:

"D:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and UNREADABLE."

What's going on? Is there any way to get my disk to work again, without formatting it and getting rid of all my files? Maybe it's simpler than that?

Your help would be greatly appreciated, HOPE you can help me out!HI & welcome to the CH forums.

Need some info about your setup such as the operating system, is your Local Disk D: a partition or a SEPARATE hard drive, if a separate drive is it slaved  or is it on ide2 or are you using sata drive(s)

Please post your setup info.

ThanksI'm on windows section and I shouldn't present you Linux solutions... But, if you have 2 harddisks on your computer, and you can make a new ext2/3 or fat32 partition on the harddisk that has no problems...
Post more data about your computer. It sounds to me like a DAMAGED partition or (more dangerous) a damaged harddisk.

If it is a damaged partition I could recommend you Knoppix or SystemRescueCd (both are Linux Live cds).

Solve : Folder Contents Gone!!!?

Answer»

I was sorting through some pictures and organizing them into folders about an hour ago then all of a sudden the folder just goes blank after I recieved some kind of error for one of the pictures. When i type the names of the sub folders which were inside of the folder that dissapeared into the address bar, the pictures and the folders citing there location still in the same spot appear with no problem, but when i try to search the system nothing shows up. The memory is just as much as it was before the incident, so i know for a fact the files are not gone, but when i look at details for the folder it says 0 for everything.

Another thing is if i attempt to create a new folder in the empty one, when i hit refresh or leave and come back the new folder (which appears as New Folder (2) even though there isnt a 1) is gone.

Can anyone tell how i would GO about fixing this problem? When you were organizing things around did you move those files somewhere else making this folder (blank) empty?  Did you check garbage can to MAKE sure you didnt delete the files?  Also go into start / documents/ and see if any of those files are in there and if so place your mouse over until you see the location of the file.
When i was organizing them, i was moving them into created folders within the original file, i still had about 100 more pictures to do... I was pretty much just in filmstrip and dragging and dropping. All of the locations of the files though are the exact same, its just that i cant access it without typing it into the browser.

If you dont understand say the folder thats contents dissapeared is called:
C:\Documents and Settings\admin\My Documents\My Documents\Vacation

When i am at this location their is nothing at all in the folder, but when i enter this:
C:\Documents and Settings\admin\My Documents\My Documents\Vacation\Beach

It will show me the pictures which i had dragged in this folder. I just cant get to them without typing it into the browser. This MEANING all of the pictures which i had not sorted are gone, but still taking up space.Bump (No one is familiar with this problem?)No, I am not familiar with your problem. In other folders it makes the same thing? Can you see other pictures?

You may try to copy the pictures folder content using a command prompt command (see xcopy /? or copy /? in the command prompt) and then try again.
Also, you may try to change the way that files appear: as thumbnails, as SIMPLE list of filenames etc. Did you try another image viewer? Can you see the pictures using xnview for example? Or any other image viewer? Can you browse to them?No this problem is just in one folder, and it appears as if it is an empty folder (changing the view type will not WORK). Thanks though i will try the prompt command.

Solve : Entrenched Cookies?

Answer»

Hi,
I am having a problem getting rid of cookies in temporary INTERNET files/browsing history/settings/view files... I recently got a used computer for college, but the previous owner did not properly clear their records and I have so FAR found and deleted/installed most unwanted info that does not PERTAIN to me. except for some embedded tracking cookies that I WOULD like to delete. can anyone tell me why they are not deleting, and how can I clear them, please

Thank You,
BenQ Computer novice and new studentCookies are insignificant and not to be worried about...
However that being said if you really want to GET rid of them DLoad install update and run CCleaner...Cookies can actually be a good thing.  I'm not sure why some people are so paranoid about them.

How ever if you got a computer from someone else, none of their cookies will really mean anything to you or do any good for you.  And CCleaner will wipe out all of the old cookies.Create a new user account for yourself.

Right. You can't use an XP Media Center or XP Professional CD. It has to be XP Home.

Is there an issue with OEM versus Retail editions of XP Home?

Sorry I just caught this typo: "if it repairs withOUT reinstalling". I corrected my post, but it has already been quoted with the error.

scanned for virus and detected a couple

going to download and install now drivers So I did re-install with " XP HOME SP2 CD " , even though my system came with SP3, does it matter?

I am little confused here, I was running a Virus/Malware scanner programs, and I looked and seemed like its  going through my old files. Does this mean I havent lost my data? SINCE I did a RE-INSTALL

Will a Data Recovery Program help? Or not

I wouldn't leave it that way long. Be sure you run Windows Update as soon as POSSIBLE so you don't get any system conflicts from having mixed SP2 and SP3 files on your computer.

(Ask me how I know....!!! It's explained in my thread where I'm getting malware help....)

Check your root directory. Do you see more than one Windows folder at C:\ ?

Something like Windows, Windows1, Windows 2, etc?

It sound like you might have. Repair install goes into your existing installation. Reinstall will create a new Windows directory, hence the variation on the name so as not to delete or overwrite your old one. Some like this because it allows them to fetch stuff out of the old installation. When I did a reinstall it put a folder in my C: labeled backup were I could get my old files now I am keeping docs etc. backed up on flash drives just in case .That's a good idea.

Conventional wisdom is keep the data on a separate partition, but the computer I have in malware help came close to losing the 3rd partition, which is the largest and holds the most of my data.

So my next bright idea was separate hard drives in the same computer, but then I read an article that said that's not safe because a power supply short can kill both hard drives. Oddly enough, that happened to me last year. In all my years of power supply failures, I've only had to buy a new one. This time cost me two HDD.

I USED to have an external USB HDD for data backups. Then my UPS let me down last year when a big short (lightening-like arc about a foot long) on a nearby power pole fried the HDD.

So now I am using the LAN to swap files between computers for backup.Would like to thank you all for your time and posts for this topic, I did a re-install  with XP Home CD, I'll recommend this to anyone who's having an issue starting windows or any missing files, blue error screens etc.  Thanks for reporting your results. A lot of people feel a reinstall is the best way to go for system integrity and cleanliness. It's just that others have a lot invested in their setup, or need to get their data.

Solve : Laptop keeps restarting intermittently?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a toshiba M40x-230 laptop running (Genuine) XP SP3 Home
Pentium M 1.86 GHz
1GB of ram

The laptop keeps restarting itself.
It can happen after 1 MINUTE or an hour.
There doesn't seem to be any pattern.
I'm not using a particular piece of software when it happens.

There is no bluescreen (automatic restart is unchecked)
It is set to write to the minidump but nothing is written there after a restart.

I have run scans with Sbot S&D and I'm running Avast.
Avast has run on boot and not found anything.

Toshiba forums said it could be a heat problem.
I have cleaned out the inside and vents with compressed air and replaced the themal compound on the CPU and GPU.

It has been fine for 4 hours today (I thought I had fixed it with the thermal compound but then it restarted itself)

I have it raised on a flat surface to ENSURE that there is plenty of ventalation.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Dave.Could be heat, could be faulty ram. Just to absolutely rule out malware, please run a scan with MalwareBytes (Spybot is old school). Also, boot to safe mode and see if the problem occurs there. If it does, then it's almost 100% certain that it's a hardware problem.First thing you need to do is reinstall or repair install your operating system. After doing this check whether your computer is working fine or not if it is still not working then I think your capacitor is leaking and you need to GO your support person. You may safely ignore the post above. On CHECKING the components I have found that the clip that hold the ribbon from the keybpard to the motherboard is broken.

If the keyboard connector moves, WOULD this result in a reboot?

Do you think this could be a possible source of the problem?

Solve : Outlook Express "Compact Messages" Window; How to Disable??

Dear Forum,
I have a very annoying MESSAGE that comes up numerous times a day. It says:

To free up disc space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes

I can't find how to disable it. The help SECTION does not have anything about the auto message. Can anyone help?

Thanks a lot!!!

SINCERELY,
Mike
In Outlook Express. Click on Tool>Options>advanced tab>look for "maintenance" at the bottom. Thanks, but the maintenance tab doesn't have anything about the automatic message.
Best regards,
Mike
I'm sorry for the bad information. There is actually no way to stop compacting messages in Outlook Express after XP SP2 it seems. I have Vista with Windows Mail and they PUT the option back in on it and that's where I was looking. Your computer shouldn't be doing it multiple times a day though. It should only compact every 100 times that you open and close Outlook Express. If it is auto compacting more times than that there something wrong in your registry. Are you allowing it to complete the compacting before shutting down your computer? When compacting it's best to have all programs closed. Quote from: cruisin702 on January 24, 2010, 01:55:12 AM

Are you allowing it to complete the compacting before shutting down your computer?
I suspect he's not allowing it to compact, which is why he sees the message over and over.

Mike, let OE do the compacting.  Then, you won't see that message until it has been opened and closed another 100 times. Compacting is a good thing, so let it happen.

Solve : Blue Screen, last known config and safe mode won't work?

Answer»

Home network consists of this Dell 8300 on which I'm typing and wife's Dell 8400 that will not come up.  Two weeks ago I installed a scanner and the software that came with it on the 8400; a trial SCAN of a magazine cover came through just fine.  A day or two later, we GOT the BSOD with message:
C000021a Unknown Hard Error
I tried last known configuration that worked and got the blue screen again; then tried safe mode and, again, got the blue screen.  Just now tried to start up again; DOS screen came up with message about shut down to protect files or failed startup, giving me the "last known" and safe mode options; I selected "last known", got the XP copyright screen with the little blue crawler for about 90 seconds, and then the familiar blue screen:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to protect damage to your computer.
PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED
Yadda-yadda about hardware/software installation and using safe mode to restart...
Technical information:
**STOP: 0x0000006B (0x0000007A,0x00000006,0x00000000,0x00000000)

SINCE I can't get the 8400 to come up, I can't give system info.  It's pretty much the same as the 8300, probably with a FASTER CPU and more storage; I KNOW it has 2GB of RAM.  Thanks for your help
Sorry about that; apparently three spacebars equals "send" on this site.  Anyway, as I was saying, that blue screen goes on to advise me to remove new hardware or software and use the safe mode (which won't respond for me.)  The technical info at the bottom of the screen is:
**  STOP: 0x0000006B (0xC000007A,0x00000006,0x00000000,0x00000000)
There are a number of other posts about the blue screen, but I can't find these code numbers anywhere so I'm making a new post.  I apologize if this is a repetition for you folks, and thanks in advance for your help.  Try starting in Safe Mode, start up the pc and press F8. If it starts in Safe Mode this will tell us it is a driver conflict, just remove the software. Thanks, Midsail; sorry I wasn't more clear about the problem.  I've tried both safe mode and last known good config, and neither one of them yields anything but the blue screen.  Unless there's another way to call the safe mode (besides the F8 key at startup), I'm stumped.  My wife found person at her IT department who's agreed to take a look at the machine, and hopefully he'll be able to resolve the problem and teach me a little something in the bargain.  Please consider this thread closed for now; if the helper can't help me, I'll come whining back to this forum then.  I'll also try to remember to post the results if he does solve the problem so other people can find the solution.  Thanks again.

What happened before formatting it had that issue (it was not getting an ip address) ,,,,,then I thought it was some issue with the OS or some other programs,,,,,,,,,then when I formatted the PC it is working fine , but it takes while to boot.

You should simply CHANGE the BOOT sequence in the BIOS since it's trying to boot from the LAN. After you've change the BOOT sequence, it should be working fine again.

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista)
Restart computer, and check again.

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it SHOWS any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.
OK

Will try these later this evening. The shutting off and such I have already done. Will try your other suggestions.

thank youSure thing I wish I knew what happened, but I don't.

After turning on the laptop to perform Broni's suggestions , the laptops wi-fi card just started working again. It will connect to the internet now, wi-fi and hardwired to the LAN card. I quickly installed the updated drivers from Dell, for the wi-fi and LAN card. Updated the BIOS too.

It is still working tonight. I wish I had something intelligent to say, but I don't.

Anyway its working now. THANKS to all for the help.

Solve : does partitioning a hard disc protect the data agains viruses??

Answer»

Hi I am just REINSTALLING xp on a friends pc and i have put xp in its own partition, and i will use D to STORE the data. If the pc was to get a virus, does having the data in the D partition PROTECT it against virus attack, or allow its recovery? What are the benefits of partitioning a disc?
cheers for your time
kwisjThe primary benefits of disk partitioning are:

1) Easier recovery if you need to reformat the system partition and reinstall the OS (and no loss of data files as a result of that reinstall if they are not stored on the system partition)

2) Easier backup of data files and disk imaging of individual partitions

3) Good housekeeping

Partitioning a drive does not necessarily protect against a virus spreading. Using a good AV, scanning regularly with that AV and MalwareBytes and, most important, smart computing are your best defenses against malware.Hi Allan
thanks for that. that makes sense.
kwisjSure.

Solve : XP setup says hard disk drives not installed?

Answer»

Hi
Trying to reformat a friends  laptop, he has no idea about computers, i have some idea. Gone into the BIOS of the system. Have told it to BOOT from the external usb cd drive, the on board CD drive appears not to work. However, after XP Pro setup  loads its files it says 'setup did not find an hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to  your computer, and that any disk related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer supplied diagnostic or set up program. Setup cannot CONTINUE. To quit setup, press F3.   I have taken out the hard disc reformatted it on another computer, so it appears that the hard disc does actually work,  put it back it to the original laptop, and still get the same problem, 'no hard disk drives installed.' BIOS does seem to see that a hard disc drive is actually connected., but XP cant find it.  Does this mean there is a major problem with his laptop? It does look well thrown about, perhaps its physically damaged.  Can someone suggest how I might logically try to sort out this problem?
thanks for your time
kwisjThis is common when trying to install XP onto a computer with SATA hard drives. This could be your issue, or it could be a USB issue. If BIOS LETS you change your SATA controller to regular IDE mode, you might be in business. If not, then post more details about the specifications of the system and someone will be back to you later.Hi  jkolak
Thanks for getting back to me. Will try to change to regular IDE mode. Oh and one other thing. My friend wants to know if i can get some data off his hard drive. But like i said i ran a quick format on it. Is it still possible to get back the data? I guess that all the data is there somewhere, but I said i would ask if it was possible to get it back easily. I know that there are programs that will restore erased data. Do you have any suggestions? He doesn,t want much this friend! But I dont mind cos i learn things trying to sort things out!
kwisjHi again jkolak
disabled the AHCI, which I think is the same as what you asked me to try, and everything appears to be working now. XP seems to be installing. Will let you know how it turns out. I think its curtains for his data though..dont you think.
cheers for your time
kwisjIf you are formatting his drive of COURSE his data will be gone.only way I know of to recover data from a formatted drive involves fairly expensive tools.thanks to all re recovering data. issue sorted. cheersthanks Alllen re installing XP all done system up and running all fine now. cheers for your time on this.
kwisjYou're welcome.

Solve : Desktop under Cookies?

Answer»

Is it safe to have a desktop file(with all the desktop files) under my cookies file folder?Come again? If I click on "my computer", go to hard drive(c:), then go to "documents and settings", then go to "user", then go to "cookies",........I have a desktop folder in there that has MOST of my desktop folders on it. Is it safe to delete this "cookie" folder(desktop), WITHOUT deleting all my files ON my desktop? You're saying the DESKTOP folder is inside your COOKIES folder? If so, the system is certainly not looking for it there so yes, you can delete it. But for future reference, any time you are not sure if you can delete a file or folder just MOVE it to a different location and reboot. If everything is okay, you can then permanently delete it.Before you move or delete any folders, why not find out where Windows is looking for the Desktop folder by running this little snippet:

Code: [Select]set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strDesktop = WshShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop")
WScript.Echo strDesktop

Save the script with a VBS extension and run from the command prompt as: wscript scriptname.vbs

If the popup window shows a c:\Documents and Settings\Username\Cookies\Desktop path, then everything is fine and dandy. If the popup windows shows a c:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop path then you should move the Desktop folder directly under the Username directory.

How did the Desktop folder get under the Cookies folder? Is there another Desktop folder directly under the Username folder? Very curious.

Good luck. While there's certainly no harm in running your script, there is no way the OS is looking for the desktop folder inside the cookie folder. It was apparently copied there in error at some point.I know this sounds dumb.....how and where do i put that script?Just move the folder to a temp directory and reboot.Allan, I havent yet deleted that desktop folder out of cookies yet BECAUSE, I ran a hard drive "search" for desktop, and there were about three or four with folder icons, ......clicked and checked those, ........and the one with my info in it , is the one that is under "cookies"sorry, didn't mean to jump the post....will try that allanJust move it and reboot. If Windows boots to a desktop with no icons you can open Windows Explorer and move it back. But I just cannot see how Windows would be using that folder as the Desktop folder.oh boy....uh.... o.k.    here goes nothingYou can't hurt anything. The worst that will happen is there won't be any icons on the desktop.BEFORE I do this, let me give you a little bit more info(should have DONE this earlier, sorry for wasting your time  .........When I download a game, I receive it in WinRar.zip format.

When my Winrar zip download file pops up, i minimze my internet browser.

So now I'm looking at my downloaded game file(winrar) and my desktop.

I create a folder with a made up "folder name" so i can easily recognize it.

I copy from the winrar and paste it in the folder.

I CHECK the folder to make sure i have the files necessary to run the game(which always works).

I then open up my "hardrive", locate program files.

I then drag the new created folder to "program files"

From "program files", I click on the new game folder.

I run the game. It works.

Then i create a SHORTCUT of the game.

Then i drag the shortcut to a GAMES folder on my desktop.(Now this has always worked for me before.I do this because my kids play these games and i dont want them to delete them, so they get access to play by the shortcuts. This has always worked without problems)

Now I know ya'll hate family stuff. My wife didn't want these game downloads under "program files".

So i created a new folder, put it in "program files", then draged and dropped the games to the new folder.

SINCE THEN.....I get these prompts:

When I drag and drop ANYTHING on my desktop:
"This page has an unspecified security flaw.Would you like to continue?"
------I click yes.

When i click on ANY shortcut on my desktop it prompts:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to access the item."

I have ran all my AVG, Malwarebytes, and Advanced System Care programs to try to clean up stuff.

Sorry for the novel I just wrote, but that is what has happened in the past two days!

Solve : About to take a hammer to my computer?

Answer»

I am about to take a hammer to my computer to fix it.  I got a hacked software on my computer and I was advised to down LOAD Ad-aware to clean the system. I did this and it seems to have worked, but when the computer came back up all I got was the Welcome page and it wanted a password. I don't use a password and never have. so I called Dell and they told me to go on line and I would find AWAY around this and I did. But I couldn't get the re-installation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition Service pack 2 to reboot and I don't seem to have anything else for Windows XP home edition. I was playing around and hit the F2 button and it let me set a password, so I did. But now I can't get the keyboard to take any letter or number strokes, so I can't enter my password.  Any IDEAS before I get the hammer out??? I CONTACTED Ad-Aware and they told me to go in under the safe mode and set a password which I had already done. I think I just need to get the keyboard running to be back on the computer. I usually use a Dell wireless keyboard and mouse, but I even tried an old Dell plugging with no LUCK. I'm at the end of my wits and have been working on this for 3 days. I'm not sure if I should the hammer on myself or the computer.Okay, I some how got passed the black screen asking for a password and turned the password off. Now I'm stuck at Welcome Administrator and still can't get machine to reboot from Re-installation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. Any suggestions? Quote

still can't get machine to reboot from Re-installation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
How exactly do you proceed? Thanks for the help. I finally got the machine to reboot. Of course now I have rebooted 3 times, because when I turn it off it comes up with a black screen, but hopefully this morning it will run right.  Thanks!Keep us posted

Solve : Message at start up- "SQL Server is either corrupt or has been tampered with"?

Answer»

How do I fix this?  Was the SQL Server on the original install of Windows XP?

I also see that when windows update tries to install Microsoft .Net Framework service pack, it doesn't work.  Are these two problems connected?

Thank youWe need more information. Please give us the versions of the software you are RUNNING. Also what happened leading up to this error.

The more information the better.

I have Windows XP Home edition.

I think what happened was that I may have deleted something that I should not have deleted, in an effort to get my computer to run faster/better.  I do not know what it was but that is when I started getting the SQL error.

I ASSUMED that the .Net download problem was related.

I just did a repair by booting from the CD and choosing the "set up Windows XP now" option and then repair.  I still got the errors but then ran the sfc /scannow and rebooted.  I will go to Windows to do updates next and see if this fixed all the problems.

If not...I will reply again. Who else uses this machine ? ?
Most Home users would not need SQL Server installed
So I could just uninstall the SQL?  No one else uses it, except meI went into control panel and don't even see SQL Server in there.

I do see MS Visual C++ 2005 Redistribution and an update
I also have MSXML 4.0 SP2 3 times
                  MSXML SP Parser & SDK
                  MSXML 6.0 Parser
I have no idea what this is or what it is for.  Do I need it?

Thanks Quote from: patio on January 22, 2010, 09:34:17 AM

Who else uses this machine ? ?
Most Home users would not need SQL Server installed

I think she didn't understand that MSXML is part of SQL.Probably less confusing if she wasn't asking in 2 different Topics...So are those comments supposed to help?

If I knew they were part of SQL Server, I would not have asked.  These forums are for those that need help, correct?

How and what do I do to either fix the error or if I don't need this PROGRAM-how do I safely remove it.
The reason i inquired who else uses the machine is because i'm not about to advise removing something that should be there.

Use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

And yes this is a Forum for those that need help...That's right. I only became aware of it because one of the computers is getting low on HDD space, so I was trying to get rid of excess stuff. When I saw it, I was wondering what it was doing there. Then I realized it was part of the kid's web development software for a school project.

Then I was looking up local host ports and realized that my Bentley workshop manual software for Volkswagen also installed SQL on my computer. So you never know what APPLICATIONS are dependent on it until you check.I will uninstall these programs associated with the SQL Server and see if that fixes the problem.  I don't know what program I might have that needs it or installed it.  Does Photoshop?

Can you tell me what the .NET framework is?  Is that something I can uninstall and then download a new version?  Is it something that I need to have?

thank you..NET is Microsoft's answer to Java. Since Java is more dominant in the market, there is not much using .NET besides Microsoft products. There are quite a few non-MS apps that require .NET.

Solve : New folders are sent to the wrong place?

Answer»

After much work today on my computer, I retreived files and folders out of a "desktop" folder, and placed them all in a new desktop folder. Why you ask? Here we go.....

The "desktop" folder that I retrieved the files from were located in c:\Documents and Settings\user\cookies\desktop

The reason i wanted them moved is because:

1. I don't think my Desktop folder is supposed to be there.

2. Anytime I drag and drop ANYTHING on my desktop i get---"This page has an unspecified security flaw. Would you like to continue?" (option is yes or no)

3. On the desktop, if I clicked in ANY FOLDER(besides My computer), and then clicked on a SHORTCUT, I would get this prompt----"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissons to access them."

This being said, I relocated all of my desktop folders from C:\Documents and Settings\User\Cookies\Desktop                       to
C:\Documents and Settings\all users\desktop      (by way of copy and paste)

Why put the folders in this location?

Because there were two files in there: (my INTERNET connection shortcut, and adobe reader shortcut)-These two shortcuts were the only shortcuts on my desktop that were still accessible. They NEVER were affected by those stupid prompts.

So now when i create a folder ON MY DESKTOP, and check the properties, it is located in: c:\Documents and Settings\user\cookies\desktop

When I create a shortcut from any folder in c:\Documents and Settings\all users\desktop

copy and paste to my desktop(now i have a shortcut icon on my desktop)

When i click that shortcut it gives that "Windows cannot open....."...same thing as before

When I create a shortcut from any folder in c:\Documents\all users\desktop

copy and paste TO AN EMPTY SPACE IN C:\Documents\all users\desktop

Then go to my "normally viewed desktop"

The shortcut is there and it works.

I have to take an extra step to create shortcuts that are really a hastle.
So apparently my folders that are on my desktop work fine.
But when i CREATE anything on them, they are routed or located or whatever you want to call it to c:\Documents and Settings\user\cookies\desktop

For info, I cant delete that desktop folder that is in the cookies

Thanks for reading this novel...all help would be appreciated

You did What ? Did you try deleting the "cookies" folder? I don't think it should be there at all. What else is in it? Have you had any virus trouble?i want my cookie folder to stay there,

if i used an unlocker program to delete the C:\documents and settings\user\cookies\desktop file, would it then route anything i do ON MY DESKTOP TO C:\Documents and settings\all users\desktop             cause if i do stuff "there" any functions i do on my desktop, they work                  no virusesWhy do you want the cookies folder to stay there if it's not supposed to be there?
The only cookies folder I have is in Documents and Settings\Default User
Documents and Settings\MyUsername doesn't have a cookies folder
Neither does Documents and Settins\All Users
Your desktop shortcuts should be under
Documents and Settings\Username\DesktopYou know, when I tried to help in your other thread I couldn't understand how your desktop folder got into your cookies folder. But after reading your post above it appears you are the cause of all of your own problems - as is generally the case in this world, isn't it?I was very appreciative of you last time Allan, and thanked you. And now I get this. All I was doing was looking for some help. So, thanks again.I wasn't trying to attack you Clint. It's simply that if you'd explained your propensity for doing things like this in your first thread it would have helped to explain everything. No worries, apparently I screwed up something with the registry in my windows program, and am CONSIDERING re-installing xpI think that's probably a good idea. And in the future, when you install a program and want it to go to a SPECIFIC location, just specify that location during the installation process. But don't move system folders around if you can help it.The reason for the error messages and lack of access is the all users folders are system folders.
This is how the OS is setup...ATTEMPTING to edit or change that just creates issues.

The easiest way to check this in future is in Folder Options turn off/uncheck "show system files and folders".
Then you will see if the folder you are working with is a system folder or not...system folder = best left alone.

Solve : Dynamic and Basic Disks?

Answer»

I have a computer with one HDD which has a Dynamic Disk with two 25GB Dynamic Volumes and one 185GB Dynamic Volume.

I wanted to USE Easeus Partition Master to extend the 25GB system volume into the other 25GB volume to get a larger system volume.

Partition Master Help kindly informed me that Dynamic Volumes could not be extended, and only Basic Disks could be edited.

Google kindly LED me here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309044

where I LEARNED that you can convert Dynamic to Basic, but you have to delete ALL dynamic volumes first and advises to back up data.

I don't mind about the data, but I wanted to ASK if I can image the System Dynamic Volume and then restore it to the larger Basic Disk System Partition after I finish the conversion to Basic and do the partition sizing.

Thanks.http://www.wilderssecurity.com/archive/index.php/t-78358.htmlThanks Allan. That's a perfect answer. Backup the whole drive, Dynamic out, Basic In.

Solve : trying to reinstall xp having used ubuntu?

Answer» HI
I'm trying to install windows xp on my old shuttle x pc.  I can get so far with loading and then get an error message "The file dac2w2k.sys is corrupted press any KEY"
Anyone any ideas on how to solve this? I've tried googling the error but it seems to be a problem ASSOCIATED with new hardware which i don't have.
Any help or thoughts would be most appreciated. There's a couple of suggestions here while you wait to see if someone has a more definitive answer:

There are unanswered replies in your other Post...Sorry, I thought this was a better place to open the topic.  I'm not sure how to close it

Solve : Thumnails and Folders?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

I've been thinking for a awhile and trying to find out if there is a way to make a sideshow folder Picture..
what I mean is, I have pictures in a folder and if you go back a folder and set the view to thumbnail it picks a picture from the folder and displays it on the folder, is there a way for that display to switch pictures at a set or RANDOM time ?...I would like it to be a lot like a Sideshow but for the folder thumbnail instead...also I want it to be able to change the picture without me having to leave and go back, I would like it to do it real time.I don't think Windows XP has the ability to do what your asking without 3rd party help. I would suggest you do a google search for a small program that will do your bidding. I did a quick search for you but did'nt have much LUCK.
Another possibility...There MIGHT be a registry hack that will let you do what you want but I am only guessing. Good luck. Quote from: Unrhymed on January 26, 2010, 01:18:50 PM

XP Help and Support:

"To change the appearance of a single folder
Open My Documents.
Right-click the folder you want to customize, and then click Properties.
On the Customize tab, do one or all of the following:
Select a folder TEMPLATE

When you choose a template from Use this folder type as a template, you apply specific features to your folder, such as specialized task links and viewing options for working with pictures and music.

To apply a folder template to all of the folders contained within your customized folder, select the Also apply this template to all subfolders check box.

Choose a picture for your folder

You can choose the picture that identifies a folder in Thumbnails view.

When you click:

Choose Picture, you can find the picture you want to use to identify the folder.
Restore Default, the last four image files you modified in the folder will be used to identify it.
Change the folder icon

Click Change Icon to change the graphic that represents the folder in all views except Thumbnail view."
