Solve : XP-Unable to increase screen resolution & color posterized?

Answer»

I am trying to help my friend with his computer running XP. Last night when turned on it would boot then switch between the splash screen & a black screen. I then booted & repaired XP from the boot disk. After completing this, I noticed the screen looked funny--posterized like only 3 or 4 colors to it. with a large cursor, menus & everything large , like when I run "safe mode" on my Vista.... Checked & it was at the LOWEST it could be for resolution (not sure of actual #'s-600? x 800?) & 4  (lowest). The really strange this was that in the menu to change these setting the slider for resolution won't move to "increase" when I try to slide it. With the color bit choice in the drop down there is only one choice where I'd expect to see at least 2. I am wondering if after repairing-reinstalling XP it might be in a safe mode? If so how to get out of it...Anyone have any ideas about what might be happening? Thank you for your time!                   The GRAPHIC card drivers are dead most LIKELY. You'll need to reinstall them first.Do you have any idea, on how I'd do this? (Thanks for the reply!)

---Also where would I look to see what kind/model/type he has?--Thx again :-)    Well...
Option #1: delete it from 'Device manager'. If You are lucky enough, the system will find and install the proper driver (in CASE it is DETERMINED 'properly' and showing it is feeling good. But I suppose You should see a yellow mark aside).
Option #2: examine the installation disks that were coming with the computer (it is assumed that one owning a hardware does have installation disks for it).
Option #3: follow this link. Everest Home should help You with determining of Your Graphic card type.
Option #4: wait for someone else to answer as I do not say there's no more options

Solve : Anyone have a Samsung NC10 Netbook??

Answer»

Where do you live? (state) LOL!!!!!!!!!Look at my profile Then I am safe....unless you have a private jet. ha-ha.  I am in NY.

But honestly, upon start-up, it absolutely asks how you want to partition. If you have time, check and you will see. I have read 100's of reviews but since they are all opinions, I wanted to know the best way to partition according to my needs.

DeniseNY is not that far
I have an aunt there. I may come for a visit....

I already checked up your laptop.
Give me the link with those absurdshttp://www.sammywiki.com/wiki/How_To:Partition_a_Netbook_Hard_Disk

Ya see, I am only using this new netbook to email & surf the net and maybe watch some hulu.com while on the road. I have nothing important and nothing that I care about enough to want to protect it by partitioning drives. I think most partition to keep Data seperate from the OS. To me, I don't think I give 2 craps about that as long as a recovery disc comes with it and I believe it does.

Now, IF the netbook will run faster being partitioned a certain way, I would want that.

Also, I have read that one must save some room for a recovery partition.  Huh???  I don't even understand what that is or what that means!!!   DENISE, the link, you gave me has nothing to do with the laptop, you're buying.
Here is your netbook: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-NC10-14GB-10-2-Inch-Netbook-Processor/dp/B001I45TA8
It comes with Windows XP preinstalled.Yes, that's it! But.....when you turn it on for the 1st time, it asks how you want to partition the HD. It recommends 1/2 to C: and 1/2 to D:   I think it also suggests to save some for recovery. (I don't understand why if it has recovery discs??)

Since I will have little data, should I do all to the C: drive?

If I give all to the C: Drive, I can still download movies/TV shows and other crap, right? It just means if it crashed, I would lose the data....yes???  Does the way I partition have anything to do with speed?

THANKS!! Quote from: MomNEEDShelp on June 12, 2009, 05:48:18 AM

...when you turn it on for the 1st time, it asks how you want to partition the HD.
Why do you keep insisting this is what will happen when Broni had stated, and as all other experienced users know, that this is not true.  Computer manufacturers for the general consumer market simply do not sell their computers in a way which requires buyers to have to partition the hard drive before they can use the computer.  This really just makes common sense; think about it.  Manufacturers know that such a practice would probably result in an immense technical support burden since many, perhaps a large majority of, new users would need assistance with this.

As Broni has stated, the new computer will have Windows already installed and will be ready to use. As you will see in the link below, it states you do not HAVE TO partition (meaning you can DEDICATE all to C: drive)  BUT you do have to choose/decide HOW you want it set up when you start the machine. I am not being difficult. I have read hundreds of reviews prior to my purchase. Something must be chosen and I was asking which was best for my simple needs. Some want to keep XP on C: and the data and other files on D: drive.    I think I am going to give the full 160 to the C: drive.

Granted partitioning is not the norm when you get a new computer or laptop, it is how Samsung set up this NC10 netbook.

http://www.sammywiki.com/wiki/How_To:Partition_a_Netbook_Hard_DiskPlease post links to some of your sources.  http://www.sammywiki.com/wiki/How_To:Partition_a_Netbook_Hard_Disk is a general discussion of partitioning, not a statement that new NC10 netbooks must be partitioned before they can be used.  I see no mention of having to partition it at http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/samsung-nc10-blue/4505-3121_7-33343697.htmlAll I can tell ya is I read many reviews, which said you must choose how you want the HD partitioned, before making my purchase. The link provided is of actual buyers' comments. They are not the best 'sources' I have read but I did not save the others. Notice how every user MENTIONS partitioning. They are describing how they chose to partition upon first start up when prompted to do so. Also, I have seen many "non-technical" people like me in Samsung NC10 forums asking what to do (percentage wise) about partitioning upon set-up.

Mine will arrive at around 7PM EST. I think the best is the entire 160 to C: drive for me.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/community-content-search/results/ref=cm_srch_q_rtr/?query=C&search-alias=community-reviews&idx.asin=B001I45TA8Well, if it does, INDEED, work that way, I'm sure Samsung has designed this so that you will only have to answer some questions, including the hard drive issue, and the SYSTEM will proceed with setup.  Based on what you've said, I would agree you have no substantial need to partition.  So, you might as well allocate the full drive to one partition, being C. Super Duper!!  Thanks so much. My b-day gift arrives in 7 hours but who's counting.

Have a great weekend.

Solve : how to remove packed.generic.200?

Answer»

Pls. help how to REMOVE packed.generic.200. Got this virus over the weekend. Pls. hope someone can help me out. I will appreciate it very much
If you're anti-virus program will not remove it, boot your computer into SAFE MODE and RUN the scan again and see if it will WORK...

To get to SAFE MODE, restart your computer, tap F8, when the Advanced Options appear, select Safe Mode...

If this doesn't work, click on the link and run a FULL "computer" scan using kaspersky online scanner...It only scans and does not delete any viruses...It does however list the exact file path (location) of where the viruses are located...After the scan is complete, write down the location of each virus you FIND, including packed.generic.200, navigate to the folder it's in and manually delete it.
Keep in mind that Java must be ENABLED in your browser and the scan will take a very long time..

Solve : Sharing Contact Info on Microsoft Outlook?

I would like to create a SYSTEM in which one person in my office could manage all of the contacts, but all members of the office could IMPORT their Outlook contacts. I would like to have these contacts automatically update to the main computer when each individual edits a contact and also allow each person to DECIDE the amount of INFORMATION they would like to disclose about a contact. Solve : De-Frag?

Answer»

You probably deleted something big.

I wonder if you have used the windows diskcleanup too land clean out your system restore points? That's ONE PLACE where it gobbles up a lot of space if you've always left it on and it's always been just doing its job. I got a lot of free space BACK by just cleaning it out (and I think diskcleanup saves your LATEST restore point and cleans out the other ones)We had another thread where a user gained back some forty gigabytes of disk space by deleting restore points.   It's a strange one?? Thanks for your time though. Quote from: Aegis on June 11, 2009, 02:30:56 PM

Solve : What did I do??? (oops)?

Answer»

I saw something pop up the other day that said something like 'There is an update waiting' so I clicked on it. I think it was IE8. I downloaded it and eventually re-started my PC.  Now it takes like an entire 5 minutes staring at a white screen before I see my home page appear. (At first, I thought my pc blew)  My http://www.____.com  box at the top of the screen is wacky. I just hate it so.... I remembered how to do a system restore and did it to the day before I did the download. OMG!!! I almost had a heart attack. When I was re-started, the blue 'e' icon did nothing. Nothing I tried would get me connected to the internet. I was freaking. I thought I erased my system or something. (No, I am not technical at all)  It finally dawned on me to see if I could un-do the system restore and it worked; I was able to get online again. So now, I am back using my PC and hating whatever I did to it. Please help!!

Solve : Network controller vs Ethernet controller?

Answer»

If I go to the dell website or hp website or whatever to get drivers, SOMETIMES I dont see drivers that correspond to what I see in DEVICE manager.  like for example I see ethernet controller and network controller with yellow question marks in my device manager on my dell inspiron 5100.  But on the dell website, when I search for the drivers for inspiron 5100, I only see a driver for network controller.  So where is the other one.

and what is the difference between ethernet controller and network controller,, i mean what does what
A Network Controller assists with the Ethernet card's ability to work. Helps with computers that have the ability to be servers or work on NETWORKS. they seem to be about the same dealing with the network. this is what i have found on the internet. have you downloaded the driver for the network controller?  i TRIED to download the driver on a different computer that had internet access , and then put it on a thumb drive so I could transfer and load the driver onto the computer that needs it so it can access the internet.  But I dont know which one to pick.  can you help
i need your service tag
is there an error code?if so than these might help out:
http://barugon.wordpress.com/2008/08/01/windows-cannot-load-the-device-driver-for-this-hardware-the-driver-may-be-corrupted-or-missing-code-39/

http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?s=gen&c=us&l=en&cs=&k=Dell+inspiron+5100+drivers&cat=sup
this one might solve your prob.
wish you the best of luck Thanks all,  I got the driver finally by trial and error, and then I just went to device manager and let it find the updates fori the other drivers by connecting to the internet.

But the thing is: if you check out your device manager and then go to your company website, you dont usually see drivers there that are named exactly what you want.  For example your device manager might show ethernet controller, but on your company site, you may not see  driver that is called ethernet controller.  Weird.

Solve : XP Installed on one hard drive, want to install it on the other?

Answer»

I have Windows XP full version installed on a computer. I have recently added an old drive and formatted it. Now I have two drives, on empty, and one used and with XP installed on it. I am planning to put my blank drive on another computer, that does not have a drive at the moment. Due to technical problems, I am unable to boot from CD on the other computer to install XP on the blank drive.

I would like to know if it is possible to install XP on my blank drive, from the desktop, so that when I install it in the other system, XP boots normally.

Any takers?

Me.why is it unable to boot from cd? and your SAYING that "I would like to know if it is possible to install XP on my blank drive, from the desktop"  is this the one that has been deleted or not? You cannot install XP on one MACHINE and move it to another machine and expect it to boot properly...
This is a combination of their anti-piracy attempts coupled with how the OS is designed to operate.

So LET's address the machine problems you WANT it on and why it won't boot to an install CD.

There are ways to do this however as long as you are legit and the machine is liscensed to run XP.

Solve : restoring choice of file when opening attachments in Thunderbird?

Answer»

I    selected "always use this file" when opening an attachment, but find that some files will not SAVE in NOTEPAD - which Ichose for speed of opening.  How do i RELEASE this binding to Notepad? If a copy of the email remains  on Thunderbird, point to the attachment and save as another name to your desktop.

Point to the desktop icon, right click and choose open with.  Choose Word when the EXTENTION is .doc.  Choose MS Office Power Point viewer when the extention is ppt or pps.

If you only have the ORIGINAL saved icon, repeat above steps and choose another program.  The program you choose depends on the extention. The old choice of always use notepad will be repaced by your new choice.

If a new default is not established, you may always use the steps To open the file.Important security rules:
1. Never open any attachment directly from the email program. Always save, first.
2. Scan every saved attachment with your AV program, before opening. Even, if it appears to be from someone, you know.

Solve : Weird blue object on my desktop. Help!?

Answer»

Hi, this problem started only a few days ago and it pops up a few minutes after I start up the computer.   It is a clear blue box at the bottom left of the screen. The time it TAKES to appear DIFFERS everytime.  Sometimes it takes a few minutes... others maybe half an hour.   I also THINK maybe it pops up when I click tabs in the toolbar a certain number of times.

Please help me.

I would start by disabling ALL start-up programs to see if that isolates the problem...There may be a problematic program running at boot-up...

Click START, type RUN into the search box, when the RUN command appears in the menu, click on it and type: msconfig........and click OK

when the program opens up, click the "start-up" tab, and then click "disable all", then click OK and restart the computer... If the problem goes away, then you can likely attribute the problem to some program that needs to be reinstalled or removed...

If this doesn't work, you should boot into "safe mode with networking", update all your anti-virus definitions, and run a scan....Also, download "Malwarebytes", and Spybot Search and Destroy, and run a scan with them.......

edit: if you install Spybot DO NOT install the tea timer!  It will just COMPLICATE the scanning process, and believe me, you don't want it anyway!!Do a system restore to before the problem started.Does it move when you hold the mouse pointer and drag it ? ?What is the make and model of your monitor?
I am using a Toshiba notebook.  I'm not too sure about the model.  And no, it doesnt move when I use my mouse pointer to drag it.

I did a system restore first but that didn't fix the problem.

I took blockHEAD's ADVICE and have been using my computer for several hours afterwards and it appears it worked.  The problem is gone.  Thanks alot BlockHEAD, that was really impressive how you precisely diagnosed the problem.

Thanks to everyone else for the help too!   you're welcome

Keeping all those start-up programs disabled will help the over-all speed of your computer, as well.  If you get REALLY curious or bored, you could go back to MSCONFIG, in the START UP tab and enable one program at a time, to see which one was causing it...
Make sure your antivirus or firewall is running

What browser are you using to download?IE 8Okay, this could be a malware problem.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By DEFAULT it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Mirco\HijackThis.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this THREAD and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or required by the system.

I can boot from install, remove it and the C: works.Where did this copy of Windows come from ? ?First install was with a copy I had from an older computer (legitimate copy) second and third, I borrowed a friends copy (legitimate) on the off chance that had SOMETHING to do with it.Thanks for all the help, but I got it working. I wish I could tell you exactly what I did that made it work, but I'm not sure myself. I cleared the CMOS by removing the battery (everything unplugged) plugged everything back up, set the BIOS for optimized default, I plugged a slave drive into the IDE, and rebooted. Everything worked and still seems to be working.

This was my first build so I've learned a lot. Thanks for the help and all of the suggestions.something PROBABLY wasnt connected firmly then.  You'll find that you may want a bigger drive, I have 2k on one like that an its rather limited.

I log out of that account and log onto the other and it just brings me back to the one I just logged out of until I F5 then brings me back to where I wanted to go... This happens with EVERYTHING.. I am constantly HITTING F5  F5  F5  .. and now when I list something on Ebay and I want to list another item, I have to log off, shut down, UNPLUG the computer start back up, log onto Ebay again (which goes to my other account) F5 again to bring me where I want to go and then list another item.. This is getting very tiresome.. someone told me that internet explorer is "REMEMBER" too much.. ??  I am a beginner so any help on this would be greatly appreciated..  it's the machine from he** that just doesn't want to forget..... Are you autosaving ur passwords to the internet and have you tried deleting your history?HI.. NO I am not saving my passwords and YES I delete my history ALL the time..  any other suggestions?I would ensure cookies are being removed when you clear the history.
You may also want to clear the SSL Cache.
Make sure you are not setting "remember me" when you log in and make sure you log out when done.
If all else fails then i would try resetting Internet explorer.

RuslanComplain to whoever sold you this system?  Try a different keyboard/mouse?try seeing if it is your software    http://www.microsoft.com/library/errorpages/smarterror.aspx?404;http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/Download.mspx  this link should help out a little. You might test the connection for each unit, the Keyboard and then the mouse, by making sure they are in their correct socket in the laptop.

These days many connections are color coded. However there is also a little picture near each connection, showing which unit needs to be plugged in to that socket.

Try to swap them over and test it.My mouth isn't working either.

There is more than enough information for ruslan to resolve the issue, or if required I'm sure we will hear from ruslan at a later date.I read his initial post thinking that maybe some KEYS were non functional....but there are "S" and "E" elsewhere in the cry for help in which he was trying to find words that sounded the same that would work with the 92 of 104 keys still functional.

Solve : remotely take command prompt?

Answer»

how to to remotely take ANOTHER computer command prompt without 3RD party softwaresIf your version of XP is "Professional" try this:

START>All Programs>Accessories>communications>Remote Desktop

type the IP address of the computer you wish to control.  Once you connect, just open a command prompt and DISCO!....you've got remote control of another computer WITHOUT third-party SOFTWARE (using a command prompt)...        Just be sure "remote desktop" is enabled in the FIREWALL exceptions, of the computer you with to connect to...BLOCKHEAD is correct & You will need proper credentials to connect username/password. If the nature of this is to hack peoples systems to try to get their command prompt as I was feeling that is not permitted and even with some flaws in the Terminal Services of specific Windows versions cracking them will not be discussed here.

Firewall exception will be required at port 3389 on the system to be managed if this is for non-malicious activity as well as RDP set up with specific users allowed for XP Pro or Windows Server 2000 or newer.

Also if this is to another site, port forwarding of port 3389 will have to be open for this system at the router at that site. If no router and direct connection to modem then your in with IP and credentials, and if router and router configured with port forwarding your in as well with proper credentials.

Thanks,

If PICTURES you want you can generally right-click and select print and just get that. If you only want a specific range of content you may have to highlight what you want copy and paste it into MS Word or Open Office Writer then print that to have just what you want and nothing more.

Solve : Winows Outlook problem?

Hi,
In my system, i have a virus problem so i download AVG 8.5 and scan. After scan complited, my virus program is finish but now when i start xp, outlook express error displyed on desktop and outlook can't open. When i switch to microsoft outlook, only account imported but mail is failed to import. How i get a mail from outlook express. When i try to import messages, "Failed to import message, another program may be USING this" error pop-up.What i can do now for recovaring mails?Sounds like corrupted data which will not export. What virus's did you have so we know the type of ATTACK you had to try to see what damages you have to your system.

Generally a system that once had a virus or virus's can never be trusted to perform correctly or be used for secure computing as for ROOTKITS etc could have opened your system up for information theft etc.

A clean rebuild is always suggested if this system is to be usde for online banking or PURCHASES or any personal information usage.

You may need to consult in a person who can run a repair utility against the OE database where the information is stored.

Do you get any specific error messages pointing to dll's missing or anything ELSE that would point to corruption? ( You stated there was an error message...what did it say )

Solve : Computer suddenly choppy / fps loss.?

Answer»

My COMPUTER Vista64bit  labtop 2.53 dual core 4 gigs of ram 512 video card.

Hey folks RECENTLY iv noticed I have been getting around 25% of the fps of what I used to when I try to play any of my games (counterstrike, WoW etc etc.)  this just started happening tonight.   I dont think its a driver issue as the games I play have been running smoothly ever since i got my labtop unless i changed something without noticing(which i dont think happened).  I am currently googling all the exe's on my process bar to make sure i dont have a virus.  Any SUGGESTIONS as to what may be the problem? If not a configuration or malware issue eating up resources if your laptop is running too hot it will thermalthrottle the CPU and GPU to run cooler. This will slow the system down. Another thing to check is go into the BIOS and see if power saving features are ENABLED. Most power saving features will underclok the CPU and GPU to use less power. Set the onfiguration to maximum performance with no regard to saving battery life and see where that brings you. (( Have your laptop powered with the AC adapter attached for a configuration like this as for the system is ready like a drag car at the light tree waiting for green to go as for it USES much more electricity and battery life will be reduced even when idle just like a drag car revved up waiting to launch off the line drinking lots of fuel. ))

The only thing I remember from this computer game is that I had a WIZARD and a Archer and also a knight on my side. And  I WOULD go around this map and BATTLE different people. The fighting style was taking turns with each MEMBER of my team. I know that the way I upgrade my three members was to level up each of their towers and that about it. so if you think you know what this game might be please let me know.  Was it an ONLINE game? Do you remember any of the characters names, might help search for it. And is it an old game or farly new?

You really shouldn't have too many processes running. Try googling all your processes and see which ones are necessary?a Lot of them are 'Svshost'..
and is it true that you cannot stop the 'System' processes ?I only have 37...

svshost is likely malware (unless it is really spelled svchost...) either way, I recommend running through the guide here,

create a new topic, and post your logs.

As an aside ENDING processes willy-nilly is a sure way to CAUSE programs. several processes are necessary for the PC to keep functioning, and handle windows TASKS. the SYSTEM process is more or less a placeholder for driver FUNCTIONS and other kernel mode operations.

Thanks BC..
my mistake ....they are 'Svchost.'....just a lot of them

I tried to download the AVG and it says I already have a security /firewall program. I know you have to uninstall those others first, but I cant find what it is in the Add/Delete Program
How can I unistall what I cant see in there ?

Solve : hp defrag problem?

Answer»

I have a hp w19e computer with WINDOWS XP 2005, and when I click control panel/performance maintainence/Rearrange items on your hard DRIVE to make programs run faster, a red X box pops up with the following message: Disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the VOLUME: HP_PAVILION (C:).  Please run Chkdsk/f.

How do I fix this problem?  I am not very computer savy, so please be as simplistic in your explanation as possible.  Thank you. Right clik the C: drive in My Computer and select Properties...then Tools.
Error checking is what you need .
Let it run to completion without interrupting it and you should be good to go.
Then you can defrag.

This may be what is causing your shutdown issues so you might just kill 2 birds with one stone here...Click Start, then Run, type cmd, and click "Ok". At the prompt in the command window that opens, type:
fsutil dirty query C:
and press "Enter".
Does the result of this indicate the drive is "Dirty"?

is there a PROGRAM to erase CERTAIN things on my COMPUTER, but not erase the drivers and things like that that are needed? I bought my computer from a friend and there are some games and stuff that only unninstall if you have the disk, and I just want to have a fresh start, like i just bought it, but when i had bought it from him, he had lost the windows disk... so the program shouldnt erase needed things, like the OS, of course, and other things like drivers and stuff, but I do want it to erase things like UNNEEDED FILES, games, and things like that... also, I want to keep things like internet explorer, microsoft word, and some other things ... any suggestions???The best thing you can do with a used computer is collect all the neccessary drivers beforehand and then do a complete format and clean install of Windows...
We'll be glad to help you with the process...wont i have to rebuy windows though? Not if you have a product ID sticker on that machine that has a Windows reg code #
Even still if it was running a legit copy of Windows there are ways to do it properly.

Solve : Remove icon from the taskbar?

Answer»

Windows or Network? Plumped for Windows!
Just TIDYING up the taskbar and there is one last icon CAUSING me a problem. It's a small double monitor display with a red cross, left over from when it went in for repairs and they had to locally connect to it. Just can't get rid of!
If l CLICK on it, it comes up in the network connections panel under Lan or High-Speed Internet and is using the Via COMPATABLE Fast Ethernet. It wont let me delete it as it says it's still in use.
It's not life threatening, but just annoying.
I can disable the Via Compatable through Device Manager, but I didn't want to disable anything if it would cause future connection problems.
Is this in fact the way to remove it?
Hello
First click the icon and it should tell u the name of the connection. Next go to My Network Place>view network connection>u should see a list/icons of networks connections. Find the one that is disconnected (the one that had the red X)>right click and deselect SHOW (click the check mark out)  shoe icon. That should do the trick.Hi midsail,
Had another look in device manager, and the Via connection can be disabled as well as deleted. Disabled it and it's done the job.
Thanks again

Solve : Screen Corrupted?

Answer»

Ok, so I just got rid of a virus by formatting the DRIVE. I installed my operating system (XP) with no problem, setup the internet, and downloaded all those other programs that I used to have (Vuze, VLC player, Firefox, etc.). Then I remembered I needed to download Service Pack 3. I SUCCESSFULLY downloaded it, but when it rebooted, everything looks real big and the color/resolution is VERY poor. For example, the task bar at the BOTTOM is supposed to be blue, but it looks turquoise. I tried to system restore to prior installing Service Pack 3, but that was useless. I am frustrated from wasting my time on the virus, reinstalling everything, and now trying to fix this. Does anyone have a SOLUTION for this?Download this http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

once downloaded, run it. in the menu on your left, right-click DISPLAY, quick report, then plain text
copy that into a code or quote block. Your missing your driver, most likely.I would put my money on a missing driver.

You should be able to get your driver via Windows Update.Drivers should be downloaded form:
1. computer maker site
2. device maker site

Micro$oft is not always sure what it's doing.

1. If you have Windows CD, FOLLOW the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

Give more information, for one thing.
You may have adware on your COMPUTER so I would recomend running a FULL scan with a program such as ad-aware http://www.lavasoft.com/. (Use the free edition)

If you have a commercial anti-virus I would recommend scanning with that too.  you meant to SAY pop up windows. CLICK on the 'Tools' menu on the IE then SELECT 'Pop-up Blocker' & turn ON the pop-up blocker

Solve : STOP: 0x0000008E, the boot error returns.?

Answer»

Hey all, My PC ran fine for about 2 months! It's a miracle! But today, this morning... I have ran into problems I have never seen before. First of all, it started yesterday, While playing The Last Remnant (AWESOME game) I often ran into crashes, then after trying to reload the game, a DLL was missing, trying to load something that DLL was still missing! Restarting the PC would fix it. I cannot remember the name and cannot access my PC for now. After, I had problems with Opera which couldn't find a file and telling me to reinstall it and it would help... Simple, eh? Never did so though.

In any case, right after having finished downloading a file (Trustable) and trying to run it.... my PC crashed down and showed me a BSOD Error I couldn't find anymore. My first reflex was to try and run it in SAFE mode... which failed lamentably! PC rebooted. I tried reloading it in multiple ways and then finally took off my windows CD in rage and tried reformatting my PC... To my great surprise, while trying to delete the partition, the partition couldn't be read! and then BAM a BSOD with the following error code.

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xF77BDE54, 0xF7399788, 0x00000000)

setupdd.sys - Address F77BDE54 base at F7795000, DateStamp 48025277

Note: My PC always ran into multiple strange problems when doing ram-extensive operations... might it be a ram problem that destroyed my HD? I REALLY doubt so but I start to wonder if those things are possible!

In any case, thank you all for your answers as to "How do I fix this?"Courtesy MSDN:
Quote

A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues (which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS UPGRADE).

What's new on the machine ? ?
Changed/updated any DRIVERS recently ?the only thing I changed was the fact that I installed TLR (Standing for The Last Remnant)... apart from that, nothing at all.Try to re-seat RAM.I will.... HOWEVER pc was able to start again and everything seems fine... I start to think it might have been done due to overheating. When was the last time, you cleaned computer inside?a week ago or so >.< that ain't the case, I'm almost sure of it

Solve : How to remove Windows Registry Recovery message?

Answer»

When I LOG on to any ACCOUNT (having done a repair yesterday, I'm thinking this is the cause), I get the following message now:

Windows Registry Recovery
One of the files containing system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a
log or alternative copy.  The recovery was successful.
                                                             OK

I can click "ok" and the message goes away.  Why does it show up other than for informational purposes (and what would be the purpose?)  Why does it show up every time since I've clicked ok?Can we have some more info on your OS and anti-virus\malware SOFTWARE please.1. Click Start, click Run, type chkdsk /f /r, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type Y to let the disk scanner run when you restart the computer.
3. Restart the computer.
4. Chkdsk will run.

If the above checks out...

Run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html

If RAM is OK, create new Windows account, and see, if it solves the problem.Hey Broni,

Could you tell me what each of the processes you suggest do?  What does chkdsk do?  And what do you mean "if the above checks out?"

And I took a quick look at the website for http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html and it looks like it's a process to test my RAM (which seems to entail opening up my computer and removing memory so I can test memory sticks individually).  Is that correct?

Currently I have 5 accounts on my computer.  If what you surmise is true, do I have to create all new accounts?chkdsk will check you hard drive for errors, and it may even FIX some, if found.
Yes, memtest will test your RAM.
Don't worry about any accounts, since we don't know what the problem is.I ran chkdsk yesterday but had to go to work before it was finished.  Is there a scanlog kept somewhere of the results? In XP, open the Control Panel, double click on "Adminstrative Tools", double click on the "Event Viewer" icon, then click on "Application". In the "Source" column, look for the "Winlogon" item. Double click it and you should see the results of your Chkdsk.Thanks. I looked at the log.  Since I don't know what I'm looking for and it won't let me copy the info I'll say, it seems there was no problems, otherwise I'm sure it would be obvious chkdsk found one.  Is that a correct assumption?
I'd say so. Normally, when you run chkdsk, and some errors are found, it'd tell you during the scan.Ok.  Now to the memory test.  I'm ALWAYS a little squeamish about going into the guts of my computer (although I have changed a power supply, added memory and a couple of other things with guidance from a friend on the phone).  Do I need to change my BIOS settings to boot from a CD once I burn the Memtest CD?

Or do you know how to put the memtest on a USB memory stick and how to boot from that?Try to boot from memtest CD, first. If it won't boot, then check BIOS boot order.

Could it be the new card phoning home to CHECK for updates ? ?
HP products are notorious for this but i've not HEARD of it happening with a vid card...None of the above. I even checked the open connections and nothing new added there.

On a side note is it any worse for the system to just be left on all the time? I can use Process Explorer to suspend but it cuts the connections which I need to stay active. My main machine is on always...i re-boot it about every 2 weeks.

Answer»

Hello,

I am TRYING to help a friend who seems to be having an odd problem.  She currently uses Firefox exclusively for internet BROWSING, but back in February of this year, the day after she renewed her McAffee Antivirus, she lost her emoticons in her MSN Hotmail account completely.  (Side note - she has them if she uses Internet Explorer while accessing Hotmail.)
Anyway, she has Windows XP, Service Pack 3, the latest version of Firefox as well as all updates from Windows.  I don't know much else but if anyone needs more info, I will ask her.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Carpenter63I'm not sure if they use JavaScript at all, but just in case, does your friend have NoScript installed on her Firefox?ANOTHER test would be to make new firefox profile. This is mozilla's page on how you go about doing it. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles

This will reset your firefox (similar to resetting internet explorer) and see if problem go away. In making new profile, I suggest you do not delete old profile if you want to keep it, and you can always select old profile so that your firefox WORK like before.

Solve : computer restarts over and over?

Answer»

Hi,
First time poster here.  We have an Emachine with WindowsXP (I think professional).  I just found out that whenever it would "freeze" my husband would unplug the computer and just restart it.  Now, it brings up the SCREEN to start in safe mode, but no matter which option we choose - it just keeps restarting.  I've tried hitting F8, the timer stops, but nothing else.  I've tried to download a reboot disk, but had no luck.  I'm going to go home and open it up and dust it out based on other posts I've read.  Any other IDEAS or suggestions?Hi Mulreay here. To me and I'm no expert it SOUNDS like you may be infected or your hard drive is shot. Rather than give you some USELESS advice all I can say is the answer will come just be patient. How often was it freezing...? Freezing at startup? How long until it freezes? Unplug before opening the case, blow out the dust, but don't touch anything physically.Unfortunately, I don't know how often it was freezing or what he was doing at the time.  I have defragged and debugged and compressed and scanned for spyware a couple of months ago (still have firewall and spyware) because of slowness and popups.  But I just found out yesterday that it would freeze and how my husband handled it      I do know it wasn't freezing at the startup, it was while he was on the internet.  I DEFINITELY will unplug it and wouldn't consider touching anything inside!!  Thanks

Solve : Problem Importing My Outlook Express Folders?

Answer»

Hello all.  First post.  I just completed a RECOVERY of my laptop.  Before I did, I CREATED several folders within Outlook Express to SAVE all of my email in.  I then copied those new .dbx folders from the store directory to an external backup drive.  After recovering my computer and updating all of my software, I tried to copy in those "newly" created and backed up .dbx files to the store folder.  They show up in windows explorer with all of the other normal .dbx email folders, but will not show up when I open Outlook Express.  I tried the import method from within OE as well, but when I get to the point of selecting the backup directory and clicking next, I get an error message stating that another program is accessing the files.  I am not aware of any other program that would be doing this.  The .dbx files are NOT marked as "read only" either.  Seems very strange.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.  I have many EMAILS that I do not want to lose.  Thanks.

KvitenseSee http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_move_my_outlook_express_folders_to_my_new_machine.html and then try it again.I had already tried that.  The files are NOT marked as read only.  I still get the same message.  It appears the files have content.  The one folder I created that had the most emails in it has a value of 102MB, which implies there are emails in that .dbx file.  I still can't figure it out.

I just completed a recovery of my laptop.  Before I did, I created several folders within Outlook Express to save all of my email in.
Where was "all" of you email before this step?  Was it not in Outlook Express?

Here's a different approach: http://www.accuratesolution.net/solutions/oesolution1.htm

Yes, "All" of my messages were in OE.  At the advice of another web forum user for backing up OE, I created additional folders with slightly different names to copy & paste all of my email into, so that upon importing on my new machine, it would not "confuse" things with the default folder names being imported.Soybean,

Thank you SO MUCH for that link!!!   The "first" option worked for me.  I created new folders in OE that had the EXACT same names as the backed up folders.  However, the store directory would not list these newly created folders until I copied an email into the folder from within OE.  Only then did the folders show up in the store directory.  Once they showed up, I was simply able to move the backed up .dbx folders into my OE store directory.  I was able to overwrite the existing folders and when I opened up OE, all of my backed up emails were there.  SWEEEET!   Thanks again.

kvitenseExcellent!  Glad to hear problem resolved, and thanks for the feedback.

Solve : How to record sound??

Answer» Okay first of let me warn you I don't know MUCH about a computer so I'm here for help. I would like to know first of all how do I know if I have a sound card on my pc that will record my voice? Also tried to record on my husbands laptop but it only would record 2 min. at a time. I need to be able to teach a class and record the lesson on his lap top, how do I do that. And how do I know if I have the same capability on my home computer? If not then what do I need to download onto both his lap top and my home computer to do so?
Thanks!
Summer
Pretty much all you need is a Microphone (newer computers have them built in) and recording software. At school, we used to have podcast lessons and they used Audacity.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Try it out, I think this might be what you're looking for. It has the ability to record for as long as you want, add background music/sound effects and you can cut part out of the recording. What software are you using now, summer?  I'm guessing it's Sound Recorder under Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder.

I wasn't aware it had a time limit (though I've not recorded anything over a minute or one and one-half minutes or so.

I've never used Audacity, but it is an open-source free editing program.  I know people who use it and like it.  It's free, and
you may FIND it HERE if you are interested.

I CLICKED ON YOUR SITE TO DOWNLOAD AND IT NEVER LOADED, WHY??? The website didn't load?

Try here for a direct link to the installation file:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/latest/audacity-win/audacity-win-1.2.6.exeHi Summer,

Very few PCs do not have a sound card that will not record your voice.
I was just doing some voice and music recording the other DAY.  So here is
what you will need.
1) A PC with a sound card.  You already have that I am sure.
2) A good PC Microphone.  I am using one that I bought at Target.  It is made by
GE and is called the PC Microphone.  It was inexpensive too. Less than 10 bucks.
Don't let the low price fool you.  It made a outstanding recording from my voice.
and gave me good sound volume without any background noise or dropouts.
2) A software program that will record your voice for unlimited time.  The Sound
Recorder program that is included with MS Windows is junk.  I downloaded a free
Sound Recorder that WORKS great with no ads or spyware.  You can get it here:
http://www.sound-recorder.biz/free_sound_recorder.html  This program is easy to use
yet has enough user friendly settings to make a good recording.  Did I mention it is
free?  I don't know about you but I like that part.
3) Save it as a .wav or .mp3 file.  Microsoft Media PLAYER on all Windows PCs will play
the file.  You can even do a recording mix for CD sound quality too.

That is about it.  Hope this helps you out.

Carbon's and Aegis' links worked fine for me...

i dont want the office packet :/ so i downloaded microsofts free excel viewer, and i wasnt able to import with it. :/ solution or freeware ?
doesn't open office contain excel? Yeah, its called Open Office Calc.

Microsoft Excel Viewer is only for Viewing ready-made excel files.  thank you, are you sure that it has a import wiz?I'm not exactly sure but Calc does a lot of the same things Excel does.

Also, depending on where you got that DATA from, you might be able to Copy and Paste it into Calc.ok , thank you I'll find out how it works.

thank you

Solve : i want to disable dreamweaver extension openings.?

Answer»

I INSTALLED my adobe master collection CS3, and Dreamweaver came in the package, when i dblclick on any css file it automatic opens with dw.
Before it opend with notepad.

can i change it so it will open with Notepad++?

And so with Adobe Fireworks, it opens gif animations, and other pictures can i remove all fileopenings? if so how?Right CLICK the CSS file.
Where it says 'Open With', click Change and change it to Notepad++ (great program by the way)

Same thing with the .gif animation.

Is that what you're looking for?it doesn't help with dbl click.
and if i go by "something.css" -> properties -> open with npp it works as i wanted.
than all css files will be opend with npp , but is there a place in regedit that handles all file extensions so i can delete all at a time such as gif,png and css?I don't think I fully understand...

Do you want one file to be opened with Notepad++or all .css files? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 23, 2008, 06:59:02 AM

all.

ok, let's remove all auto opening extensions. the computer will not know what program to open the file with.Try this:

Right click the file and go to Open With

Click on Choose Program

Choose the program you wish to open the file with, check the box and press OK.

Is this what you're after?
still dont get it?Right Click the file (LIKE in your First picture)

Click Öppna Med and choose the bottom option (like my pictures)

That way you can check the box to open like that EVERY time you double click that file. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 23, 2008, 07:56:59 AM

 - ps opens lots of extensions. (i dont want it to open anything)
 - if i do as you SHOWN with, jpg i still will have to doo it with every other image format. There aren't a lot of image formats.....Pretty much .bmp, .jpg and .gif

I don't know of any registry key that does this and I wouldn't go messing with the registry unless I knew what I was doing.

I know that if you go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT you can see all filetypes. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 23, 2008, 08:04:44 AM

okay thankyou finaly i found it.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\[.imageformat]\(standard) delete string.
and then you have a computer that opens the file with the default windows program, if existing. So you got it? yap

I would try another keyboard too.
