Solve : Error regarding svchost.exe?

Answer»

Hey guys, me again. Got a new issue. Been workin on a computer. No viruses or anything visible. Did quite a few scans with misc. programs such as Adaware, Spybot and AVG. Everything checks out. However, I keep getting this issue when I do any task.

AXWIN Frame Window: svchost.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x0274f7a0" referenced memory at "same ADDRESS". The memory could not be "written".

Click okay to terminate the program
Click cancel to DEBUG the program

Either answer is a no go of course considering svchost is a must have process by Windows. If I click okay, it gives a 1 minute shutdown due to the DCOM Server Process Launcher terminating unexpectedly. If I click cancel to attempt a debug. System hangs so badly and nothing works anymore! Now I gotta postpone returning this computer for another day. Included I have the error in a jpeg in which ive described.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Have you tried Malwarebytes? I know you said you've tried several programs but Malwarebytes seems to be the best at finding the Internet Security 2010 virus which is possibly causing this error message.Yes Ive used it on this computer a few times. What would it hurt to try once more? Ill do an overnight scan. In the mean time, lets set a "what if" scenario. If Maleware comes back with nothing, whats my next step. Keep in mind that the last thing I want to do to this computer (since its not my own) is to reinstall Windows. If it is the Internet Security 2010 virus I think a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes will find it. It could take a full scan though. It may not even be a virus, that's my only suggestion though. Someone else may come up with something else.Okay my problem was that I didnt have an updated version of Malewarebytes. I scanned it multiple times and it found a few traces in registry and what not. I even noticed that with Malewarebytes, it keeps constantly blocking access to malicious IPs PRETTY much nonstop. Is that a sign that the infection is still in the computer? I may have to do a Hijack This log so someone here can view it. Im still getting the AXWIN error and I dont understand why. Lemme post a log.

Solve : Windows Search Indexer Running but Outlook items remaining still rising !?

Answer»

Hello - Anyone with this experience ?  After Re-installing WINDOWS Search Indexer 4.0 on my WinXP 2002 SP3, and then Rebuilding the search index, it does not appear to be INDEXING my Outlook Personal Folders.  There are no problems with the computer speed as it is a fast high-end computer which should CRUNCH through things rather quickly  (PowerSpec, COre2 Quad CPU Q6700 2.66GHz Dual PROC/ 3.25GB RAM).  If it is infact inexing, it is running extreemely slowly for Outlook Datafiles.  In fact, when queriying Indexing Status within Outlook>Tools menu, the number of search items remaining across all open mailboxes keeps rising.  It says 23760 items remaining in "Personal Folders" and never seems to start decreasing.  Yet, in the Windows tray icon, it seems to be progressing ok and the "Items Indexed so far" is rising constantly.  (I did reduce the number of directories under Indexing Options...   to quicken completion time ).
Is there any way to accelerate Indexing in Outlook ?  I have already eliminated just about all unnecessary Outlook search directories except for the Outlook Personal data files in order to try shortening completing time.
Please help!  I've been searching for weeks now, tried changing options, doing a few Registry tweeks, and stuff like that recommended by other posts, and  to no avail.  Its unpleasant - to say the least - not to be able to search my INBOX on keywords.
Thanks a million !

Solve : Strange fonts on laptop.?

Answer»

When I went to open up a word document program on my friends laptop I noticed that when I pressed certain keys different symbols would appear.  For example a colon would give me a strange symbol that would look LIKE an A and an E merged together...sorry for that vague description, if you could picture that AE but merged into one symbol.  Some of the other keys seemed to be doing this as well.  Letter keys seemed to not give me any problems.  My first guess was that the font in word was just set to some crazy theme so I placed it back to Ariel and I had the same symbols pop up.  This problem exists in all of the typing programs she has on her laptop as well as even typing in the run menu.  Any ideas on this?  The computer is running Windows XP Home edition.

I know. Only The Faroese and Danish keyboard layouts apply here though. Apologies if I MISSED the all-important fact that the SETTING could also be the Danish layout.

Yes. other layouts have the AE character. But how many have it INSTEAD of a colon? And how many of those layouts leave the letter keys untouched? Only two: The Danish and Faroese layouts. At least from what I can see. Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 27, 2010, 05:51:06 PM

Solve : Desktop Display Bar: How to Display??

Answer»

Dear Forum,
I ran across a really neat feature yesterday by mistake, and I can't FIGURE out how I did it. It DISPLAYED a vertical LIST of all my desktop items. This would be really useful while I have numerous windows open and need to access a desktop item. Does anyone know how to display it?
Thanks so much!
Sincerely,
Mike
Sounds like software provided by the computer manufacturer like Dell Dock provided by Dell. Who manufactured the computer?
Winky+D will minimize all open applications to the taskbar TAKING you directly to the desktop.
Or, you can right-click on the taskbar and select Toolbars and PLACE a checkmark beside Desktop. This will place a Desktop arrow on your taskbar with a menu of your desktop.Cruisin: That was it! The toolbar arrow.
Thanks so much!
Sincerely,
Mike

Solve : Run for your life. Another SP1 horror story!?

Answer»

First, just a warning...I write long posts and they are very detailed. But this one is guaranteed  to challenge you.

I have an MSI K8MM3-V motherboard that is Vista Basic compatable. It runs an AMD Athlon x64 processor at 3200 Mhz, 2 GB's of Kingston RAM, an NVidia GeForce 7600 256MB graphics card, a Creative Audigy SE sound card and a Coolmax 550 watt power supply. I run Vista Basic x64 on my machine.

I just recently bought my Vista DVD. The first time it was installed was on a motherboard different from the one I am currently using. Right after I installed Vista, I downloaded all of my Windows Updates. I then proceeded to install Service Pack 1. I believe SP1 was not available at the time for download frrom Windows Update, so I downloaded it manually.

Right after SP1 was finished installing, it rebooted and showed a screen that said installation was successfull. Also, everything seemed to working fine. Then by chance I right-clicked My Computer and clicked Properties to view basic information about my computer. Then I saw it! My memory was listed as being 16.0 GB's, when in reality I only run 2 GB's!!!

I immediately called Microsoft and over the course of the next few days, I must have talked to about 5 different technicians. No one could solve the problem. Finally, out of desperation, I called one more time and lucked out by getting a tech with some insight.

He figured out that the reason I was getting this misreading of the RAM was DUE to an incompatability between SP1 and my Realtek onboard audio. See listing:
http://vista123.net/content/vista-sp1-driver-incompatibility-issues-still-unresolved

So he first had me disable my Creative sound card, then go into the BIOS and enable the onboard audio. Right after Windows rebooted and the desktop came up, Vista recognized the NEW hardware and installed a driver for the onboard audio. Then even Windows Update downloaded an update, though I found out later that wasn't even needed.

I now checked in the System window again and it showed the correct amount of RAM as being 2GB's. Problem solved and I even sent the techinicians manager a letter of praise for the young man who figured out the problem, after so many others didn't.

Next, for one reason or another, I think it's because either my motherboard was failing (it was an ABIT) or I discovered that it was not Vista-compatable. (ABIT never was able to tell me if it was or not) I changed MOTHERBOARDS and put in the MSI M8MM3-V, which I knew for sure was Vista-compatable.

I went through the whole process again and installed SP1. Once again, it listed me as having 16.0 GB's !!!. So, once again, I called Microsoft and the technicians tried to fix the problem. This time , they could not. But this was a different motherboard and I found out that my onboard audio was not RealTek, but VIA AC 97 Enhanced Audio, though I didn't know that at the time.

To make a long story short, the Microsoft entry-level technicians had such a hard time trying to find a solution to this, that my support ticket finally escalated up to the higher tier technicians. They were all ready to start looking into the problem, but I found out my PCI slots on the motherboard were dead, so I had to send it back to MSI for repairs, So I was never able to take advantage of dealing with more expert technicians.

The last thing I told them on the phone was that as soon as I get my board back from MSI and load Vista and Sp1 again, I would call them. We also briefly discussed the issue and they assured me that the at least the incorrect displaying of my RAM wasn't hurting anything, That is was just a cosmetic issue. He even said that when he deals with me next time that he might even be able to fix the problem by editing the registry.

So I just recently  got the motherboard back from MSI and everything is working fine. I  loaded Vista, then downloaded all of my Windows Updates. But this time, instead of immediately installing SP1, I decided to do a little research. My hope was that, if it was indeed a driver issue, that maybe I could fix it myself first, then install SP1 and then I wouldn't have the probem.

And I had found out that the reason SP1 was not available to certain customers through Windows Update is because Microsoft could detect when there was a driver incompatability issue. I just wish they had a tool you could download to tell you excactly which driver it is that's causing the problem.

But I was unable to find any updated drivers or drivers that worked. And like I mentioned, I had now discovered that my onboard audio was VIA AC 97, not Realtek, so I tried going to the VIA website and I thought I had found an upddated driver. It said it was for the audio chipset in the southbridge. Even the numbers matched what was in my manual.
But it didn't work or change anything. It still showed 16 GB's.

Then my attention turned to a Creative Labs driver update. Something the company has not really been on top of. I found nothing I thought I could try on their website, but I did find a site that offered updated Creative Audigy drivers for Vista and SP1 that were designed by some guy in Brazil. See web page:

http://www.vista4beginners.com/Windows-Vista-SP1-Drivers-Creative-sound-cards

I tried installing one of those and it did install just fine, even though I got the message that the driver was not signed and all. Still I did not notice any change. Luckliy I had been SETTING system restore points for all of these driver "trials", so I just reverted back to where I was before every time.

But that got me thinking. With my first motherboard, the problem was fixed by uodating the Realtek onboard audio driver. It never had to do anything with the Creative Sound card.
And now I have VIA AC 97 as my onboard audio, though I disable it, and it's not listed on Microsofts list of imcompatable drivers. So I figure, it has to be with the Creative card, but installing an updated driver for that didn't work, so at this point, I was stumped.

At that point, I just decided to go ahead and install Sp1 anyway. I figured, who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and the problem won't show up. But after the SP1 install, it still did show me as having 16.0 GB's of RAM. So, once again, I called Microsoft and this time they, very quickly were able to tell me that they couldn't find any fixes. So it is now going to passed on to the original higher tier technician that I had talked to before. He will be calling me next week.

So here I sit with the problem still at hand and I hate to just sit around. So I've still been trying to find my own solutions while I wait. One thing I did try was to run my Driver Updater Pro, which, like many such programs, will scan your system for outdated drivers.

http://dup.xpctools.com/

I have found out through reviews that many of these types of programs, like Driver Detective are not realy that good and can actually do hard to your system. But I did my research on this one and it seemed to be one of the better ones, though I've never actually used it before yesterday.

When I ran the scan on Driver Updater, it showed that there was an updated driver for my Creative sound card, though where they found that is a mystery to me. The scan also showed that many of my VIA system devices also had out of date drivers, though I know that is not the issue right now.

And I had installed x64 chipset drivers for my VIA chipset when I first installed Vista, so I thought I was covered there. But my techinical expertise, though about average, has never included any knowledge of VIA system devices, what it is they do, or even if they need updated drivers. But like I said, I don't think that has anything to do with my current problem. At least I hope it doesn't!

So that's my story. I just wanted to find out, first of all, whether I should trust these driver update programs. Because right now, that's the only thing I can think of to do, while I sit and wait for Microsoft to call. And I figure this is one of those issues that Microsoft may just not be able to fix and that I may just end up finding a better solution through tech sites like this one.Very informative description.

I'll only make two brief comments - While I had Vista Business on my new HP workstation I attempted to get to grips with it - reluctantly but - gave up and downgraded to XP Pro after applying Vista SP1 ... it produced problems and won't bore you with descriptions but - suffice to say I was not happy.

Re Driver scan progs - I treat them with caution and am ''old school'' in as much as - "if it ain't broke ...."  I applied an updated (supposedly) ATI driver for my Radeon on last machine and it generated troubles .... in the end I rolled back and decided to not go for updates just because they were there - prefering a stable platform which works!

If indeed a device is not performing at best then a driver update can well improve things - but otherwise I don't want to risk it usually.

As for 16Gb RAM being shown - wow, that's a good one!I did not take time to thoroughly read your post so I my comments may miss the target.

I have a Compaq Notebook PC that came with Vista.  For about two months or longer after SP1 was released, Windows updates would not OFFER SP1 to me.  Then, it finally happened. As I recall, it happened after an automatic update from HP for a device driver was installed.

I suspect you would have been better off to continue searching for driver updates and see whether you finally discovered one that caused Windows Update to finally say - OK, your system is ready for SP1.

Did you visit the motherboard manufacturer's website in search of driver updates?

As far as using a service such as http://dup.xpctools.com/, I really don't know what to recommend, but I think I'd be inclined to try it in your situation. I'd be careful with these driver update utilities.  That xpctools one looks a bit scary, I know driver detective is pretty popular, but requires that you pay for it.  This one is free Link Removed

Nope, but it's perfectly OK to borrow a compatible Windows XP Home Edition CD as long as you use your own "product key".Right. Compatible means you have to know whether your key is for Retail, Upgrade, or OEM. Quote from: jkolak on January 27, 2010, 04:36:41 AM

jkolak:  Since you took the "bait", what are the "compatibility" rules?  I've never been able to sort that out...
     a.  So, Retail, Upgrade, OEM "product keys" are not interchangeable?

     b.  Am I correct in assuming Windows XP Home Edition, Professional, Media Center, and Volume License "product keys" are not interchangeable.

     c.  What about "product keys" across service pack levels?I'm deep into that right now myself because I tried to use an Upgrade SP3 XP edition for repair install of my because I heard that you can get errors if you use the OLD XP (No SP) Full Retail CD. The end result is a WGA failure that I am trying to fix.

In my research on this problem, I found the Product Key rules here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328874

The article isn't about this SPECIFIC case, but the rules for keys are in the first paragraph of the Introduction, "Warning":

Quote
When you install Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, the media must match the product key. That is, the channel (MSDN, retail, OEM, Volume License, and so on), the SKU (Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, and so on), and the language (English, French, and so on) must match between the product key and the media.

Solve : word documents will not open?

Answer»

Something is blocking ALL my word documents from opening.  Where would I begin to look for a solution to this? How are you trying to open them?  What happens? Please provide as much information about the situation as you can - including what happened between the last time everything worked PROPERLY and the first time it didn'tit is a long story. I don't know when this STARTED, so can't take a step back.  a few weeks ago I installed the IM booster which is a disaster. It was hijacking my home page among other things. I couldn't uninstall it from add/remove.  I USED revo uninstaller and GOT it out.  I do think that is where the problem started. Now when I go to my documents and try to open a word document like usual, (double clicking on the file) the hour glass sits there, and after about a half minute or LONGER, it finally opens.  All my other files open immediately it is just the word documents. What would affect these files? What happens if you open word first and then open a document? What take longer to open, Word or the document?

Solve : occasional missing prompt on user account?

Answer»

Hi all. I have an admin user ACCOUNT that I USE when I'm offline and casual user account for use when I'm online (apparently this is more secure - any opinions on this?). Occasionally, when I log off from the casual user account, I click on the admin user account but no prompt appears meaning I can't enter a PASSWORD to log on. Logging on casual and logging off again fixes the problem. Any ideas anyone?Hi,

It sound like your COMPUTER may not be logging you off PROPERLY by not closing all the connections to the user registry hive.  I support a large network where we've haven't had the problem you have, but something similar.  Try installing Microsoft's User Profile Cleanup Service from the link below.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

Hope this helps.

Does this happen every time you try that?

Try this method.  Right CLICK on a link you want to open and select Open in NEW Tab, or Open in New WINDOW.  Does that work? Please explain exactly what it is you are trying to do, how you are doing it, and exactly what happens when you do it.Clicking on the link doesn't always work. With IE 6 I was able to copy/paste the URL into the address bar.  With IE 8 you can't do that.  When I hit the refresh button ( guess that is supposed to be the button to use ) I get an Earthlink ( I use dial up) error page. All I want to do is copy/paste into the address bar like I did with IE 6.  Thanks for your responses. What happens when you copy and paste the link and then press ENTER on the keyboard?I thought this was interesting so I checked my IE version and it's 8.  I POINT put my mouse pointer over a link and clicked copy shortcut and then I clicked in the non-blank address bar three times which blocks it.  Then I deleted and pasted and was able to hit enter or once you paste the link a green arrow appears that you can click on.  I had no problems.

Solve : restoring windows xp?

Answer»

I have a benQ joybook R53. I bought it a couple of years back so the format of the drives is still FAT32. So i want to format the HDD to NTFS. However I found out that I did not get a windows installation CD with the laptop, I just have the OEM recovery CD (It does not allow me to partition my drives during installation). Hence I am having great difficulty in formatting my C:.

I have tried taking the HDD out and formatting it with my other computer. However when I PUT it back into my benQ, the recovery CD reformat my drives again so they are FAT32 again!

Is there any way (APART from obtaining someone elses copy of windows installation CD) that I can format my c: to NTFS and partition my drives?

At the same time the battery was removed?YEP. would you like a screen shot of how it ASKS for the password?
maybe you can find how to override it manually?

that is what is asks me for.

There should be a JUMPER on your motherboard. The pins that the jumper is on will probably be labeled: pwd or something similar. Remove that jumper. Make sure that you ground yourself to the computer's case the whole time you are working inside. Static electricity can fry your motherboard!

The manual should tell you where that jumper is.
Go here for your manual:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx280/en/ug/index.htmThat password screen is not for the Admin password...
Try the next screen down.
Where is this machine from and what is the History on it ? ?
guys it works!   i did the jumper and restarted computer and went into bios finally and found out cdrom was disabled. so i enabled it and booted off a cd and did a CLEAN install. thanks for the help

Re-check your IE settings...Why check my IE settings when it is Google Chrome that is not working? What would I check for??If flash is enabled...or if Chrome takes it's own flash plugin...

Since you seem to know what's going to work or not before you try it, maybe you could enlighten us on how to solve this problem.

Actually, he's using this magical thing called "basic logic"

First, the errors say a file is missing. When INSTALLING programs.

what file is missing? who knows. chances are, this is an error message from windows installer. But whatever the case may be, it is almost certainly not from the VIDEO card, since as the OP stated the errors occured when Installing the game, program, and windows 7, not when using the game. I haven't seen a game installer "push" the video card at all, since they are desktop applications, nor have I seen it suddenly decide to delete files it needs for no reason.

Additionally, the BOOTMGR error simply means that, the NT6 equivalent to NTLDR is missing; I imagine this is simply because the install failed.

At this POINT I think the various "missing file" errors and the file(s) they refer to may be extremely useful. The "bootmgr is missing" issue is likely just a result of the failed Windows 7 installation due to another file that is missing.

All I can suggest to do would be to perform a completely clean install of XP, or 7, or whatever OS you prefer; delete all existing partitions on the HD and install a completely fresh copy in a new partition. Make sure to copy down any and all error messages you receive during the install, as they may point to the true culprit for all these issues.I simply love when they get sarcastically critical ...then quit the Forums.

Another one bites the DUST, I suppose.

Although to be honest wasn't "hanging on the edge of my seat"...

copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config

to restore my PC but I was made aware that I my need to reinstall all my applications which I did.

My computer is better now however now I'm having problems connecting to certan websites. Some tell me I need Active-X?!   Others time i get a message the says my security settings wontt ALLOW me to view this sight.   Other time I click on a link and ANOTHER internet explorer window opens and nothing loads. The screen stays white. Also everytime I try to save a website as a favorite I get a message that reads something like:

Im sure all this has to with my system crashing a few weeks ago when I had to recover by using the commands mentioned above, but maybe like all my applications do my internet settings have to be that be reset ??
What happened to the nice young man Allan who was helping me ??

Thanks in advance. You gave have been great......
Hi!

Personally I don't trust System Recoveries. They work but not very effectively. Its better to install a fresh copy of Windows, otherwise, not all problems are sorted out on re installation esp cases like yours. Yours is a result of corrupted system files which are corrupted mostly because of viruses.

The best you can do for you to surf without problems is install another browser like Firefox. Most viruses attach the windows media player and browser (Internet Explorer). You can be a victim. Alternatively U can use Opera or Netscape Navigator. The idea is to use another browser apart from Windows Internet Explorer.

By the way, what anti-virus are u using?

Best wishes
EdgarYap I go with Ek.Try using a Different browser like the Mozilla Firefox which is quite Popular Nowdays.

If the problem persist the best thing for you would be reinstall the Operating System.

so i just got a hand me down laptop from my dad and it was filled with a whole bunch of computer programing files and a lot of other stuff i didnt need. it was also stuck in classic VIEW with no option to CHANGE it back to regular view. so i figured the easy way out was to just reboot the system again with the same version of xp professional that it already had. i installed xp again thinking my dads version would be ERASED leaving a new fresh version for me to make my own. i somehow created a version of windows xp home edition that i cant get into on top of my dads old xp professional which i can still get in to. now i dont know how to get rid of the newly installed home edition and still dont know how to replace my dads version of xp professional with a clean slate. please help me. thanks. You need to start over, and perform clean INSTALL.
Manual: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.htmlim going to try it right now. wish me LUCK.All the luck, you can get alright so i performed the clean install but now i have two (hopefully small) problems on my hands. after installing windows xp professional my infared device isn't recognizing the wireless internet system in my house. i checked to see if i need to enable it or something but it says it already is and that its working. i tried to troubleshoot but to no avail. im pretty lost and don't know what to do. also a smaller issue i have is that for some reason when i go to turn the computer off the standby button is there but it is not an option to click. help is appreciated. thanks.Install chipset driver

Sounds like it's overheating...When you say overheat, can you actually feel the laptop hotter than USUAL? Because I don't feel any increased heat when it shuts down. However there was one time when I was using my laptop on my bed and it shuts down, that time I can actually feel that the laptop is a lot hotter than usual. That one I can see overheating as the cause for the shut down. But with this current problem, I don't feel any unusual heat.

Moreover, another problem with regard to video files, is that when I open a folder with video files, a message appears saying that the folder needs to be closed. This thing only happens when a folder has a video file.

Solve : IE Compatibility View?

Answer»

Hi guy's just a small one this I'm sure. USING IE8. I had a thread with EvilFantasy a while ago about tracking cookies and with his sage advice I stopped third party cookies to my system. SINCE then I am getting the message (see pic). Evil has never seen that related and obviously I take his word. Is there something else causing this? It's not the most TERRIBLE issue as it just refreshes but can sometimes be very irritating! Cheers guy's in advance

[attachment deleted by admin]I BELIEVE the issue is with the Yahoo page itself...
I've had issues this past week with it.Any solutions that you know of Patio? Thanks for the repy.

Solve : Explorer opening windows wierd?

Answer»

when I open a new browsing window through a link, it will always open the window shrunk down to about a QUARTER screen. How do I change it to open full screen? When the window opens to that small size drag it to a large size (do NOT MAXIMIZE the window, but drag it to full size). Then, while holding down the CTRL button, close the window. Next time it should open to the large size. If that doesn't WORK, REPEAT the above but this time hold down the SHIFT KEY and close the window.

Solve : Itunes messed up?

Answer»

I bought an external hard drive and transferred all music from my C drive which was full to the external hard drive.  Now my itunes doesn't recognize all of my songs.  I have tried to redirect where Itunes recognizes the path but to no avail.  ALSO, when I download a NEW CD to Itunes now, it doesn't recognize it either.  I think it is going somewhere ELSE.  I guess what I am asking is, can someone out there help me streamline all my music into one folder where Itunes can recognize it again and the downloaded CD's will import to that folder?

PLEASE help.

Solve : D: Drive has disappeared?

D: DRIVE in my Dell Optiplex GX-240 desktop pc running XP Professional has DISAPPEARED.  I can't find it anywhere.  What should I do?More info...Have you looked under the desk?

WHAT is d: drive? What happened before it "disappeared" May be you have a different file system format, for instance you format c drive using ntfs and d drive using another format.

Try to check this , and if its true reformat d drive using the same file system format as c drive.

Ummm...the drive would still show up...

And i'd never suggest a format until we know what's on the drive and whether there are proper BACKUPS. Quote from: umbra on March 08, 2010, 03:06:06 PM

D: drive in my Dell Optiplex GX-240 desktop pc running XP Professional has disappeared.  I can't find it anywhere.  What should I do?
1.  What is/was "D:" drive?
     a.  Separate physical drive:
          (1)  Hard drive
                 (a)  Internal
                 (b)  External
                 (c)  What interface:  IDE, SATA, USB
          (2)  Flash drive
          (3)  CD/DVD drive
                 (a)  Internal
                 (b)  External
                 (c)  What interface:  IDE, SATA, USB

     b.  Logical drive (or volume) sharing physical drive with other logical drives or volumes.Sorry if i was misleading, in this case this action i have done.

Any way i am curious to see and learn other solutions.

Regards,I meant to say that D: drive is the CD-Rom drive and E: drive is the DVD/CD drive.  After booting on an antivirus cd, both drives disappeared or are not showing.

I cleared the malware which was a Trojan Fake, but now the disk drives don't show.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Solve : question about Sandisk SD cards?

Answer»

My personal computer was recently infected with at least one virus and some malware. I have a few Sandisk SD cards that I usually USE to back up files and transfer them to other computers. One card was used with the computer that was infected. If I reformatted the card, could I reasonably expect that it would be safe to use with the non-infected computers without infecting them with whatever my computer has? Could a virus still SOMEHOW hide on the card and escape being deleted?Have a look...

http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_remove_a_virus_from_a_memory_card.htmlThanks If I reformat the card with the computer that is not virus-infected, will the virus have a chance to get into the computer just by even plugging in the card reader into the USB port? Would it be effective to reformat the card on the virus-infected computer before using it with the non-virus-infected computer or would that not work out that way? I have no other way of getting the files I need onto the virused computer so I was downloading them onto the SD card on the non-virus-infected computer and then transferring them over VIA the card.

haus_kat

I'm going to defer your questions to someone with more experience as I'm not up to speed on SD cards.Without knowing which virus you have on the card I can't be sure it won't write back to a clean machine. What I would SUGGEST is to make sure your machine is up to date and has a good anti-virus program runing on it. Than go ahead and format the Sandisk. Don't try to remove files from it just format it. You should be ok to do this.

After you are done formatting it run a full scan with your anti-virus software.

Solve : bios virus maybe??

Answer»

well from all erlier posts i had, to no sucess, i believe i have a greater prob.
after trying to re format the hd i`ve  come across all kinds of barriers.
i`ve tried xp with boot disks, no luck, had second hd with w95 with errors, had hd re formatted on other computer and written with xp (which works fine on other pc) but blue screen on my pc.
i`m starting to wonder if i have a bios virus or not. keep in mind that i`m not TOTALLY new to re formating, i`ve been down this road before but not with this outcome. with fresh hd installed back into pc, automaticlly i get prompted to go into safe mode. that brings me back to blue screen error that says: had to shut down windows to prevent damage"
"tecnical information ***stop: 0X0000007B(0xf9678528, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
any ideas?Download the MBR Rootkit Detector to your desktop.

  • Doubleclick mbr.exe and follow prompts.
  • A black DOS window will quickly appear then disappear.
  • When mbr.exe is finished it will create a log on your desktop.
  • Copy and paste contents of that log file to your NEXT reply.

(even with 2 totally different o/s on 2 different hard drives, same prob.)It's not a BIOS virus...

If I understand correctly, you formatted, and installed ("Written") XP onto one HD from another PC, and then put it in yours, and it Blue screens. Not surprising.

Install from the OS disc ON your PC. If it doens't start from the CD-ROM double-check the CMOS boot order settings.yes, i installed xp on my hard drive on another dell dimension (just like mine)and it works fine on other pc. i set cmos to 1 cd drive, 2 cd drive 3 hdd,4 floppy. i keep gettin "INVALID drive" in the dos prompt for the cd drive. i've went thru every letter on the keyboard, sometimes i know it will default to another letter like "r:\ for cd" but still no luck.
should the hdd only have 1 partition when only running os? i know before the was 2 partitions.
before all this started i was able to boot strait from xp disk, but now the pc dont recognize the cd drive, even with boot floppies.

you lost me here- the XP CD, should boot, and guide you through the install.

Shouldn't have a prompt.thats basically why i chose to reformat the hdd on a diff pc, no matter what i tried i could not get it to boot from the cd on my machine. like i said earlier, that i never had this prob before, no matter how screwed up the pc got, i was always able to boot from cd.
but now its is reformatted, it should just boot the os now, but it dont.....Is this an MS CD with shinu holograms all over it ? ?
Have you tried another data cable for the CDROM ? ?
It should boot...

Solve : disk partitioning?

I am trying to resize my NTFS partition from 200 GB to 600 GB.  RIGHT now I have a smaller FAT32 partition which is about 7 GB with the 200 GB NTFS.

With the increase in size of the NTFS partition should I also increase my FAT32 partition.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is all based on my assumption that the smaller FAT32 partition is my swap file. What OS ?
What size is the drive ? ?
I doubt the FAT partition is a swap file...Windows XP, 64-Bit, Sp2

596 GB is available to me on the entire drive.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319
That is the hard drive I have.Perhaps the FAT32 partition contains recovery data?  Have you tried mounting it?  As Pat SAYS, UNLESS your setup is extremely exotic, it is not being used by a swap file.

Solve : Netbook / Laptop (Easy Question)?

When I watch Hulu, the powersaver goes on and the screen goes dim.  While watching a tv show, I have to keep tapping a key or the scroll pad to fully wake it up to full color. This is sooooo annoying!  How can I stop it from going into powersaver/dim mode?

NC10  Samsung Netbook w/ XPDoes it do this if the AC power is hooked up ? ?Funny U ask.........Nope!  Just when the CORD is out.  So it sounds like there is a setting that does this to save battery
Go to start then CONTROL panel and click on power settings in classic view.  Change it to something else like home/office desktopTHANKS!!!  I changed everything to die out after 2 hours so if I am watching a movie, it wont be effected by power saving.

It is still DIMMING after I leave it alone for a few minutes.  Any other tips/tricks to stop this dim?  (When I tap anything, it goes back to full light) I don't want to have to do this.Try changing the power scheme.  Try the home/office pc first and if that doesnt work keep trying different ones until it worksI changed to Home/Office when u said to but I will try another. Solve : Anyone have ROBOFORM form filler??

Answer»

I just got a new Samsung NC10 Netbook. (XP)  I do not have a CD drive.

I PAID for the pro version which runs great on my desktop.

My QUESTION:  How can I get RoboForm on my new netbook??

(I am not technical so go easy on me guys... )

Thanks!! What about our bet??
Did you partition yet? I WAS RIGHT!!!!   ha-ha!  You had to choose whether to scroll the bar to the left or right which determined how much of each drive you wanted to have. I slid it all the way to the right and gave the full 160GB to the C: Drive.  The recommended or shall I say the way some might have left it and just hit the 'NEXT' BUTTON was like 76 to the C: and about the same for D: with a 6% set for the hidden recovery that could not be changed.

Gee, If you understand what I WROTE I am proud of me. LOL!!!

Now, smarty pants (kidding ) ..... I have to get my form filler on the netbook. I downloaded it and got the free version but I believe in like 30 days, It will only allow 10 of the passwords to stay unless I buy the pro verson.  I bought the pro version for my desktop though and I need to know how to transfer all the passwords to the netbook without a CD drive. HELP!!!

DeniseI've never heard of anything like what you had to do, but...we all learn

Free RoboForm: http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/airobo.htmlI am so proud of myself. LOL!!!

What is that link? I already downloaded the free version from the website. Need to know how to get my pro version to the netbook.

Solve : Windows XP RDP issue ---strange?

Answer»

So I have a SYSTEM at my home set up with RDP enabled for remote access to it. To avoid brute force scans and detections of it I changed the port to 8079 from 3389.

From 3 locations I can connect and maintain a connection to myip:8079 via RDP through those SYSTEMS. At a 4th location lately I am connected for about 10 minutes and then get greeted with a message that the connection has been lost and its trying  counting 1 to 20 to re-establish the connection.

** This problem was happening prior to changing the port from 3389 to 8079 so its not related to the port change **

Problem is that when this happens at this 4th location to my home system, my home network storms and it takes down my local network. IP Phones and all which is BAD. I then have to drive 8 miles home from this location and reboot the network devices to get rid of the storm.

The network is a simple 5 port Linksys router with port FORWARDING for 8079 at IP 192.168.10.101 so that RDP will function at myip:8079 to this Windows XP Pro SP3 system. This system is also SETUP with a static IP of 192.168.10.101 instead of DHCP giving it the IP. DHCP then gives 102.103.104 etc to the other systems and devices.

Do I need to move this static IP higher to that its not in the range of the normal DHCP scope - or - is the 4th site poisoning my local network somehow through the RDP session?

Going to go home for LUNCH and will move the IP to 192.168.10.249 to set it outside of the normal DHCP lease scope to avoid potential for IP conflict if DHCP tries to give out 192.168.10.101 when 101 is static to a device. But I am concerned that that might not be the fix given that 3 sites have no issues with connections lasting hours on end even idle connections at times without disconnects. So I am concerned as to if there is a way to poison one network over the other via a RDP session. Windows XP Firewall is also enabled with exception for 8079 to allow for RDP service through that custom port.

Very ODD

<< UPDATE >> --> Went home to confirm that local network was not storming as I had originally thought, but instead my Motorolla Surfboard SB5100 Broadband Modem was getting stormed. Local network inside Router to all my devices was quiet and confirmed with Wireshark. IP could not be pinged during this period from inside or outside of network. Rebooted the Motorolla Modem and everything was back to normal.

Also changed the IP to 192.168.10.249 and changed port forwarding to 192.168.10.249 to get that system out of the normal DHCP scope to avoid any DHCP issues with leases etc. Confirmed that I could get back into home location agin from locations 1 and 2 as well with no problems.

Any ideas what can be causing a DoS type of storm between this 4th site and my home Broadband Modem ? The 4th site is a corporate location with a large network, and they have a sonic wall to control internet access. This remote access is so that I can do my job going to specific sites that the normal workers are blocked from access too from any system via RDP and use of home internet connection as actual gateway to the internet. Now come on Dave - how would this avoid brute force scans?

How about checking for a firmware upgrade for that router?

And have you considered VPNs?

Solve : Using "search" under the start/menu freezes up my computer?

Answer»

Hello,
When i go to use the "SEARCH' for my windows xp mytaskbar freezes.  Any explorer windows or other programs that are up on my desktop i can STILL use.  to turn off or restart the computer i have to use "control-alt-del" to do this.
i have used several programs to search for virus' and malware.
AVG, spybot search and destroy and malware bytes are the programs i used.
my computer works fine to my knowledge, the only issue is using the "search" on my start/menu taskbar.
i am current on all of my window updates.  is there a virus, trojan horse, ETC. that could be causing this or have i possibly deleted part of windows and to to fix that.
thank you for any help,,,Link REMOVED until further notice...

DLoad and run the Windows Explorer shell fix tool....4TH one down on the page...
Re-boot afterwards.Oooops....http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/pcbutts1.comcould there be a virus or something attached to a video file? so going under "search" to locate the possible video file the taskbar freezes and the ability to search my computer is possible?

Solve : Best Forum Section to Ask Audio Codec Question?

Answer»

Hi

Please let me know if this is the most appropriate section of the site to ask an audio codec QUESTION in.

I'd like to know where I can OBTAIN the Microsoft MSN Audio (32) Codec.

Years ago, it automatically downloaded to my old PC and I recorded lots of material with it. Awkwardly, these will not play back on my new machine.

I found one site that claims to have the correct codec for download but the file bore the unrelated name : "AMClient.exe" and so I was reluctant to blindly install it.http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/6009p1.html

A few others have had this issue and seemed to find a solution.
Thanks for the link.

Fortunately, I didn't need to edit my Registry. I just saved and ran the AMClient.exe PACKAGE from http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/321d.html and have access to my files again.

When I asked Microsoft if the program was O.K. they told me that they didn't know and that I'd have to ask MSN and that that would REQUIRE creating a Live Account.

It did not work, how do u update the drivers? When i watch movies online its fine, its just from a dvd or when i want to burn a cd or dvd
What SOFTWARE are you using to burn? What software are you using to play DVD's? Make sure you have updated both. Also check to see if you have any available Windows updates.  Also i have had issues with codec's before. The one i have had alot of LUCK with can be found by googling "ac3filter_1_51.zip".

-HoFLMedia center edition i use or ill use itunes to burn cds. Both are updated, and so is windows. What is a codec pack?http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htmDLoad; install and try CDBurnerXPro....
Try a burn.
If it doesn't work all you've lost is a blank CD.A codec encodes/decodes the video for playback. Some movies or video need specific codecs to play. The one OI recommended has WORKED quite well for me. Quote from: evilfantasy on May 29, 2009, 11:56:16 AM

Solve : computer privacy at work?

Answer»

If I access my home email from work can the employer find out who or what content I'm looking at?They can view the URL (the link of your inbox), but they cannot see your emails. All you have to do is be sure to logout every time.Ensure that whatever you access on your work pc is permitted under any rules imposed by your employer..For example, the firewall where I work blocks the access of mail sites like gmail and yahoo, among other types of sites.  I can send and receive e-mail to and from external sources, but I cannot access my GMail account. In my old High-school, the teacher was able to take control of the screen, see what was on it- even put what was on one persons screen onto everybody elses. Why, this one time he took control of somebody who was using E-mail W/o permission, and changed the LAST line of his NOTE to his girlfriend from "see you soon Lisa" to "See you soon, Debbie". I can only imagine the trouble he had EXPLAINING that.

But, anecdotes aside, some companies have monitoring/auditing of a similar sort in place- the ACTUAL screen content could be being viewed for example by a security auditor.

However since for the most part companies trust their employees to use their time for something productive, they PROBABLY don't actually go so far as to literally record the actions of employees on such an extended level. They may, however, be able to see that you have been accessing your home E-mail (via network logs), so if this is frowned upon you may still catch some flak.

Solve : NTLD File is missing! pls help!?

Answer»

Hi, im trying to help my friend out who has got a problem with his COMPUTER. When he boots up his computer he gets the error that the NTLD file is missing. He presses Ctrl + alt + del to reboot his computer and gets the same errror again. We are aware of that there can be many different things that can have occured this error, we are still not sure of what. This error occured after he acidently hit the power switch to the computers power outlet. And when he rebooted the computer he got this error.

All Help is appriciated !1) Try the reboot again. Shut down slowly with a regular shut down. Unplug from the wall, wait 30 seconds and reboot.

2) If reboot does not work, shutdown with regular shutdown and then reboot again.

Tap F8 as you reboot and select Safe Mode with command prompt.

run
C:\>SFC /scannow  ( REM You will need an OS installation DISK to replace bad system files. Sfc wil instruct when to insert the disk). Sfc is a System File Checker.

C:\>sfc /?

Microsoft(R) Windows XP Windows File Checker Version 5.1

Scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with CORRECT Mi
crosoft versions.

SFC [/SCANNOW] [/SCANONCE] [/SCANBOOT] [/REVERT] [/PURGECACHE] [/CACHESIZE=x]

/SCANNOW        Scans all protected system files immediately.
/SCANONCE       Scans all protected system files once at the next boot.

/REVERT         Return scan to DEFAULT setting.

C:\>

Insert your XP installation disk and restart the computer...when prompted, press "any key" to boot from the disk.  When the disk is loaded, select "R" for repair... Select "1" and press enter, then enter your administrator password and press enter(if there is NO existing password just hit enter)...Next at the prompt type:  cd \    and press enter

Next, type: copy d:\i386\ntldr    and press ENTER

Once the file is copied, type "exit" and reboot the computer, and see if it workedHopefully I am not telling you something obvious -- but take the floppy out of the drive.
