Google Search CAME up with a lot of advice.

Solve : office files?

Answer»

When i purchased my new laptop i had all my files transfered at the place i bought it. All the files i had in Microsoft word, on my old computer, got put into microsoft office on the new one. One of the PROBLEMS i am having is with some invoices i had on word. My office trial period is up and now i can't use the invoices without purchasing a full office subscription. I believe that's around 400.00 and i don't want to go that route. Is there a way i can transfer those invoices from office to something else such as Microsoft Works? What is the FORMAT of the files?  Are they .doc files or .xls (Excel) files?

I suggest starting with Open Office.

Open Office is a free office software suite with the FEATURES of Microsoft Office.  It won't READ the newest .docx format from Office 2007, but I'm pretty sure they're working on that format.I would agree with Aegis. Open Office works great and is free.

Or if all you really need is word than try out ABIword. Its free and looks like and works like MS word.

http://www.abisource.com/

Both of these programs will open your files.

They are doc files. I'll try open office. Thanks a bunchHey, Spoiler, do you know if ABIword will read that new blinkin' .docx format?

I swear Microsoft did that just to mess with OpenOffice.    Quote from: Aegis on June 19, 2008, 11:33:47 AM

No it will not.....and they are working on a patch....I think MS offers a viewer...not sure about that.

Sorry to raise your hopes!

No, it's cool.

Oh, and thanks for recommending ABIword earlier.  I'd forgotten about it, but I've heard GOOD things about it.Yeah, Abiword is great.
OpenOffice is good, but bloated, it's very slow to open.
For anyone using OpenOffice, make sure you take a look here.
Oh, and MS do offer free viewers for the new Office 2007 file formats, but as far as I know no other programs can modify them yet.Open Office 3 beta will open M$ Office 2007 files.

Solve : If i re-install XP??

Answer»
Just a quick question,

My Windows media player won't start and i can't seem to download it from anywhere.

Is Media Player on the Windows CD, and if so will it delete my emails from Outlook Express if i re-install XP?

Thanks for you time. Here, straight from the Microsoft Website

Windows Media Player 9
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/9series/default.aspx
Windows Media Player 10
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/10/default.aspx
Windows Media Player 11
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx

Choose your version
Thanks for you very quick reply

Unfortunatly i have tried Microsoft themselves and they keep asking me to verify ( which i do ) and every time it gets denied

I have an original version of XP and still it won't except it, thats why i thought about re-installing the cd but, i'm worried it will delete all my emails and photos.

Its like running into a brick wall!

  Quote

Verify? Verify that your version of Windows is Genuine?

Do you have the Windows XP CD?

If you are going to do a complete re-install of Windows XP, you will need to back up EVERYTHING because it would re-format the drive, erasing all the data.

If you're having trouble with activation/verification, contact Microsoft, they can help:
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/

Don't be put off by the "piracy" in the link. Not accusing you of anything, but through that page you can learn how to get your Windows license activated again.Or you could try going to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
When it's finished remove the CD and re-boot.

Qther than that Contact MS directly to solve the registration issue...if you are legit they will correct it.Wow! I never knew there were so many people helping.

I have a genuine version of XP with code but it denies it everytime,

I was just hoping that it would keep all my personal data and just re-install the software from the cd. Its only media player i am having a problem with.

I have formatted the hard drive before and thats why i thought installing would just copy over the top anything missing or having problems.

I have heard winamp is a good PROGRAM to use, have you ever used it?

Thanks again.  Hello!

Try this:

Click "Start", then go to "Control Panel".
On the Control Panel, choose "Add or Remove Programs".
When you're there, click "Add or Remove Windows Components" on the side.
See if Windows Media Player is checked. If not, check it. Then click Next, then Finish.

Good Luck! and keep us posted!
you never said what you are using media player for.  Music, movies.  Personally, I do not like wmp .  I do not like media monkey because it is very unstable.  i also do not like winamp.  For a stable media player try J River Media 12.  It is easy to use for the newbie, or very complex for the advanced USERS.  Another good one to have is Media Player Classic.   In the past media players were loaded with UNDESIRABLE software( spyware).  Not sure if that is still the case, but some players are nothing but a total hassle.
Another THING to considered, you should back up all your data, computers can just crash, and you could lose some data. Quote

but i gave it 1gig of ram, and an fx 5500 nvidia vid card, runnning  windows xp, upgraded to sp 3

for future references the blue error screen which i talk about:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been SHUT down to prevent damage to your comp."

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

2 more paragraphs saying to check hardware and software
and then says

"'Technical Info
***STOP: 0x000000ED (0x862B9438, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x000000000)"

alright, so i was playing grand theft auto san andreas.... got bored and quit the game, and left the room for about an hour, thinking it would go to the desktop.
When i went back, i was in a black screen and the only thing i could see was the mouse pointer, i ddi alt ctrl delete and the taskbar didnt show up, tried to TURN off the pc with the swicth u use to turn it on, did  alt f4 and nothing happened. So i have a surge protector or suppressor or whatever it is called.. and i flipped the switch to turn off the POWER and restart the pc.... but when i turned it back on it would go to a screen prompting me to choose my operating system either windows xp or windows recovery system. i choose windows xp and another screen followed prompting me to pick from
safe mnode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with something else
last recent settings that worked
or start windows normally

in start windows normally it would go to the windows screen where it has like a little green loading bar and then show me a blue error screen for like half a second and restart
the same thing happened with last recen settings
in all the safe modes, it shows me a list of i guess sytem files and then just restarts
btw the list that it shows is
multi(0)DISK(0)partition2\windows\system 32\drivers\agp440.sys
^^^thats the last file
and then says
press escape to stop loading stp.sys

ok..so i went back to the operating system promp screen and choose recovery but afterthe white line loads it shows the same blue screen that i had seen before.... btw.. i pressed f8 in the os promt screen and it showed me some choices
all the previouse safe mode options
enable boot logging
enable vga mode
lat knwo config (*didn't WORK)
directoryt services mode (windows domain controllers only)
debugging mode
disable auto restart on system failure
start windows normally reboot
return to os choices menu

i did the disable system restart and when i did everything normally it showed me the blue error screen

btw i looked up 0x000000ed on google and it took me to this page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297185
but i can't put anything into the system recovey toolTry putting your recovery cd in from HP and choose restore.  It may give you the option to do a non-destructive restore, it may not.

Try booting to Safe Mode Command Prompt / type the following at the prompt  c:\   then     sfc /scannow

I've not tried it from here but it's worth a shot.  Make sure you have your cd handy.

Solve : Restoring Access to Safe Mode?

Answer»

OS Specifics: Windows XP Professional SP2

Ok, here are my problems.

1: Pressing F8 (repeatedly) during reboot does not LAUNCH boot menu.  Nor does holding it down during reboot.
2: The BOOT.INI tab in MSCONFIG is misssing.  The boot.ini file on my hard drive appears to be fine.  Attempts to RESTORE BOOT.INI tab have so far failed.
3: My computer is a laptop, and thus has no floppy drive.  The CD drive is currently broken, so I cannot use the XP CD to access the recovery console and attempt to rebuild my boot.ini (just in case that is the problem).

So... with all this... I just cannot get to safe mode.  I have tried downloading recovery console ISOs to install the recovery console locally, but none of the ISOs I have found contain winnt32.exe.  I haven't been able to find what I need anywhere on the 'net so far either, been looking for hours.  If anyone can help me here, I would greatly appreciate it.is there any particular reason that you need to access SAFE MODE?At this exact moment?  No.  But surely you can see that being able to access safe mode in general is rather IMPORTANT, yes?  ^^I found this on Google.

Well, I would like to not have to spend the money on that if I can avoid it.  If there w as something really important I needed to do in safe mode *right now* that'd be different, of course.  ^^  But, at this point I am just trying to correct the actual problem, as opposed to working around it.  Thanks though!Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...

ok here is the thing

my friend had some problems with her pc so I took a look.  It was infested with viruses and rookits and other things.  I used Avast in a boot time scan to get move everthing to the Avast CHEST.  Now the Pc won't load windows.  It gives a NTLDR is missing  problem.

I am tryiding to fix it
The PC had windows millenniuim first put onto the hard drive and it looks like someone came by and did an upgrade to windows xp pro.  So I have a fat32 with windows xp pro on it.

any ideas how to fix?

If I try to do a windows repair do I use a millenniuim cd or a xp cd?

any other options would be greatfull thank yountldr is the xp boot loader, so you would use an xp cd to reinstall ntldr. You probably erased it, or quarantined it with avast. Good Luck!do a repair install though Quote from: ramp on June 18, 2008, 10:52:35 AM

Instructions for Windows XP:

Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
Once in the Windows XP setup menu, press the “R” key to repair Windows.
Log into your Windows installation by pressing the “1″ key and pressing enter.
You will then be prompted for your administrator password; enter that password.
Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter “E.” This letter may be different on your computer.
      copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
      copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Your system should now boot normally.

ramp if you have any questions Post back...
thanks to all the people that took the time to try to help me out.

I did what you said to do Patio but it still says the NATLDR is missing.  I even tried it this

Boot to the XP CD. When it asks you if you want to install or Repair, choose Repair. This will take you to the Recovery console. Choose the XP install to log into, usually there's only 1, and enter the password when prompted. For Home, the default password is blank. At the C:\Windows prompt type the following commands:

FIXBOOT, answer Yes
CD \
ATTRIB -H NTLDR
ATTRIB -S NTLDR
ATTRIB -R NTLDR
ATTRIB -H NTDETECT.COM
ATTRIB -S NTDETEC.COM
ATTRIB -R NTDETECT.COM
COPY X:\I386\NTLDR C:\
COPY X:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
In steps 9 and 10, "X" is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.

I FOUND it on some site when I was researching this.  I even tried making the 6 disk setup disks on the microsoft website and that didn't work either.  any more ideas?  It looks like I am just going to have to format it and start NEW.. probably be better off anyways.  So its windows xp with ntfs and not windows with fat 32

Without knowing anything about the pc in questions it's very hard to advise you.

Only three files are required to get Win NT to boot, these are NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI.   If the pc has a floppy drive you could copy these three files onto a floppy disk on another system running XP then boot from the floppy in the suspect pc (change the boot sequence in Bios to boot from the floppy first).  Ntldr will detect (from the boot.ini file) that the Win XP files to be loaded are on drive (0) partition (1) in the folder named Windows and Windows should load normally.   You can then copy Ntldr from the floppy disk to the root of C:

Check the contents of the boot.ini file using a text editor such as edit.com or Notepad, (do not use Wordpad or any other word processing program) it should be something like this:
Quote
[boot loader]
timeout=30
Default= multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="<OperatingSystem>" /fastdetect
The string between double quotes "" is not important.

If the pc does not have a floppy drive you could use the XP Boot CD from this site, scroll down to FIND it.  It comes as a zipped ISO image so you can burn it to a cd.

Good luck

You could also try at the Recovery Console prompt type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Answer yes and re-boot. Quote from: patio on June 18, 2008, 03:59:17 PM

Solve : HELP! Cannot install my new Nikon Coolpix and I think its a driver issue...?

Answer»

Hi There,

I just bought a Nikon Coolpix camera, and Microsoft 2000 Professional is not recognizing it. I tried scanning for driver updates to no avail. Wondering if anyone else might be able to help me out with this....

Thanks!Did any CD come with the camera?yes, the cd is INSTALLED, but the computer wont read the camera. its hooked up to the only USB port that is available, the cord came with the camera... i tried updating the drivers, im not sure whats going on.
So, when you plug in the USB cable to the computer and the camera, and you turn on the camera, Windows 2000 does not DETECT a new device?exactly, its so weird.Do you have a different cable you can try?  (I know it's probably one with a "regular" USB plug at one end, and a mini-USB plug at the other.)it is one of those SPECIFIC ones for the camera with the tiny connector to the camera on one end and the normal usb on the other.

The computer can recognize that SOMETHING is connected, it just wont recognize the camera itself. The driver doesnt have a record of that specific nikon model, so i tried updating the driver and it didnt do anything. Im not much of a computer person, obviously, but i can usually trouble shoot little things like this.... im at a total loss with this stupid camera. I mean, i can take out the memory card and transfer the photos at like CVS or something, but that could get costly in the long run. try visiting Nikon's website for windows 2000 drivers as they might be different to the ones on the disk. What model Coolpix is it?

I can find support software, but not "driver" software on the Nikon site.Normally with USB devices the Software needs to be installed first before the device is hooked up...is this how you did it ? ?
If not go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and remove the Nikon software.
Power down and unplug the Camera.
Re-install the software and it will prompt you for when to connect the camera.

P.S. Is it showing up in the Scanner and Camera section of Control Panel ? ?I did install the software first, then connected the camera and turned it on as the instructions specified to do. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software a few times. The computer just doesnt WANT to communicate with this camera. What specific Coolpix model is the camera, please?

I tried to run it in Safe mode, Windows normally, last known configuration but no luck......Then someone suggested to Get into the Recovery Console by making a Recovery CD with ISO image but the machine is not responding to any of it......Iam really frustrated and want to find out whats the problem??.....Is it with CD/DVD ROM drive???  I ran a self hard drive TEST,it seems fine...Help wud be highly apreciated
Do you have Windows XP CD?No i dont have but i tried with my frnds back up cd...didnt work.....What EXACTLY didn't work?
You know, this is not 20 questions game...As i hav mentioned earlier i dont hav XP cd and i tried my frnds XP cd.....that didnt work....also i had made a boot disk which didnt work as well.....infact the machine is not responding to any of the cds....which part didnt u understand???I dont think you understand where bronis coming from , the XP disc can only really be used for two main things , to recover xp from a bad error or to format your harddrive and install a fresh copy , it looks as if you have a poorly maintained computer for this sort of thing to happen , either that or your hardware has come to a hault which i doubt as your computer wouldn't turn on let alone boot into windows. So what you need to do is get yourself down a shop and buy a copy of xp , and install that copy onto your hd .

GoodLuck. Quote

infact the machine is not responding to any of the cds
I assume, it doesn't want to boot from CD, right?
Did you check boot order in BIOS?Have you tried USING a bare-bones system..... keyboard, mouse and monitor only?

make sure that is all that are connected.Thnx T-Rex for that idea.....but i think my CD/DVD Drive has gone bad.....coz i took it to Best Buy and they too tried some cds and my laptop did not read it......its just goin in circles....restartin and gets stuck with that message screen.....Broni...i did check whether CD/DVD Drive is setas first boot device in the BIOS Set up and it is first in the boot order.....my CD/DVD Drive is not reading any of the cds....It is not asking to boot from cd.....no prompt appears wen i try 2 run the boot diskWell, I guess, you'll have to start with getting NEW CD drive.

Solve : Find out type of file in Windows?

Answer»

Hi,

Analogous to the "file" command in Unix, how can i find out the same for Windows.

Like x86, AMD64 or IA64

Need not be a single command, i just want to know the file type.

Thanksx86, amd64 and ia64 are not file types, they are processors. Most intel processors are x86, amd64 is an amd 64 BIT processor. File types are .exe .doc .xls etc.Windows is unlike Linux. It does not have file types in the same way. You can tell from the extension as hmar said.
We are in the wrong DIRECTIONS

Basically the files that run on a x86 system will have that architecture.
Same THING applies for AMD64 & IA64 as well.

I want to find out a given file will run in which architecture?

Lemme know in case of any confusions ...depends on OS.
Yup,

But an AMD64 MACHINE can run an x86 file.
Then how do i find out.Maybe this would be clear if you tell us what you are trying to do in detail.

I have windows xp professional. I put in the microsoft cd in and hit repair.  In the command prompt it had c:\windows> and had to put in cd c:\ to get C:\    Then I put in chkdsk /r  It took about three hours to do this because the first time it repaired one or more segments.  Then I had to do it again to make sure I had a good C drive.  I have a D Drive but is only used for backup of files.  I checked that and it was good. Now I am wondering if I should have used the D Drive to also form a boot.  Any way I still have a problem.  Is it worth to diconnect the D drive's power and just reinstall the xp pro in the C Drive again and then put the D drive back on and back it in, (Files), to the C Drive?      Thanks...

Solve : Moving .pst's and rules to a vista computer from xp - office 2003?

Answer»

Hello guys,

I just went through all pits and circles of *censored* with migrating from an xp laptop to vista - now the last one - outlook in office 2003.  I copied all psts (outlook and archive) from old one to new - they seemed to work. imported the rules - they seemed to have set in fine. Set up and tested the email ACCOUNTS while keeping the old laptop SHUT off from internet - each of them worked fine. They are even showing that they are receiving some mail - one of the accounts was GETTING ~6500 emails - but i dont see them in any of the folders that are managed by rules and not in the general incoming one. There is some action - emails are "being received" but heck knows where they end up! i restarted outlook all to no avail...

I recommend you contact Dell with the service tag, so you can obtain the recovery software.  You're going to need it, eventually.  It's relatively inexpensive.

Solve : dual system Vista & XP?

Hi

I've not used Vista, someone wants to put xp sp2 on his laptop which as Vista installed.
1. can it be DONE?
2. will the be any problems or hiccups?

he want to run programs but Vista willnot reconise the program, as it is not the latest version.
so by running XP on his particioned drive, will this solve the PROBLEM.

any comments welcome.

PThe problem you might find dualbooting, is that XPs boot loader will not recognize Vista, so you could lose the ability to run Vista. You WOULD need wither a third PARTY boot loader, or just run XP in Virtual PC or VM Ware.

   2. Location the application executable.
   3. Right click the executable and click the Properties option.
   4. Select the Compatibility tab.
   5. Select the Run This Program in Compatibility Mode option.
   6. From the drop-down list, choose the operating system you ran before upgrading to Vista.
   7. If necessary, select the option to run the program as an administration.
   8. Click OK.

Installing more than one version of Windows is not that difficult to do however for it to run properly the older ver. should be installed first...which would mean he would be wiping out Vista; installing XP; finding and installing all the correct Drivers for XP; making sure everything works; and then finally re-installing Vista and it's drivers.

If he does want to do it this way post back and let us know. Quote from: pohhop on June 17, 2008, 08:02:15 AM

hi there you of course install win xp on the notebook......i have a compaq presario V6211AU and it came with vista home edition.it was really slow cos it came with only 512 mb RAM so what i did was just formated the recovery partition and installed win xp on it....   there are two problems which u will face here
1)the first one is dual booting which can easily be solved by performing repair operation from a vista cd(any thing will do even pirated one's also work)
2)the second one is of course the drivers problem you can find the relevant win xp drivers from  your manufacturers website.some times they won;t provide u with all the driver so what u need to do is just download the drivers of other notebook which have got similar configuration like your's

this happened on my freinds old laptop it seems with older pcs you need to choose fat 32 instead of ntsf then it works Quote from: computeruler on June 20, 2008, 11:58:48 AM

this happened on my freinds old laptop it seems with older pcs you need to choose fat 32 instead of ntsf then it works

This is bunk.

It may be stalling because of the low amount of RAM and or the CD may have smudges/scratches on it...these are the 2 most common causes of this symptom.

Another cause is if it's a bogus copy of XP...

pls give more info about your system.decrease the number of programs at the windows startup and ALSO get rid of unused junk DATA...........
and lastly install a good registry repair software and scan your registry....
cos with a lot of  usage of the system a lot of junk entries are stored in the  registry which tend to slow down your system...
you can also install CCleaner and scan the system..

Solve : Cant load XP onto new HP laptop.?

Answer»

Hey,
ok so i have a hp dx6500 laptop that came with vista.  I tried to erase vista and load on XP but for some reason when i try to install XP it comes up with a message that says that the hard drives cannot be found... and ideas? How did you get rid of Vista ? ?
Post alot more details on the machine and the procedure you used...Are you using an XP CD to install XP?

Did it come with a different computer?

If so, it wont work because the CD can only be used with the computer it came with.Check if you can see the HDD in BIOS, if you can't there could be a bad connection, if not then theres another problem.
Also if Vista wasn't removed properly then you may have corrupted data. i.e. Formating doesn't actually delete all the data, just the registry that dictates where files are, so the disc appears to be blank, if there is corruption the disk may not be able to be read properly.
If you are RUNNING a RAID config by any chance you need to make a Drivers floppy so windows can detect the HDD
Also a generic windows will install on any PC that meets the minimum system requirements.
hey..thanks for the replies.. OK so i dont think that i deleted the vista properly.. i tried to use dban but it couldnt find the hard drive.. so i used another program that is like a partition program that obviousally corrupted the data..

So how would i fix this problem.. if the hard drive is corrupted is there a program that i can run or something to get this sorted out?so.. i am using KILLDISK right now to delete everything off of the drive.. but im still not sure why the XP disk isnt recognizing the hard drives.. is it possible that they are too new for xp or something like that?ok... so I used the KILLDISK and it did its thing.. writing 0's to the whole drive.. it worked perfectly and recognized the hard drive.   But when i try to install XP it still says that it cannot find the hard drive... any ideas?ok.. so i realized that the xp doesnt have the drivers for sata drives............ sounds like this is a pretty common thing....... the link is for people who are having the same problem.. and cant easily change it in their bios.. and dont have a floppy disk drive...

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/resolving-setup-did-not-find-any-hard-disk-drives-during-windows-xp-installation/ :-[Typically it is vertually impossible to go from an upgrade OS (vista) backwards to XP Pro.  I haven't tried personally but heard from a lot of unsuccessfull ATTEMPTS.  Just at the TOP of my head If I had to attempt this I would first have to completely format the main partitial C: USUALLY....which contains any/ all links to the old Vista OS in order to start dumping XP system files and such ---just make very sure you have a side copy of all of your motherboard drivers as back up.  After the format then attempt the fresh loading of XP and good luck.

You may need to create a bootable CD with the MBoard manuf. SATA drivers on it to go any further...

Have you FORMATTED the drive after using all those wiping tools on it ? ?
It may be as simple as that.
An XP CD should recognise any drive if it's a good CD.

Depending on the make and model of the PC you should have an application in your menu that is for burning recovery discs, do this first. Also, find and download onto a CD or flash drive a copy of XP drivers for your computers hardware.

As for installing XP. You LIKELY can not use the XP install disc you have now. It's whats knows as a OEM version that is tied to the system you bought it with.  You will need a retail version you can pick up at most electronics stores.

When you get a good copy of XP toss it in, install, load any needed drivers and enjoy.....My laptop didn't come with anything but an instruction booklet full of useless stuff.  No reinstall discs, no driver discs, not even sample software.  Just so we're clear, I'm good to go after I burn those recovery discs and back up my files?  By the way, to burn a Vista recovery disc, open up the start menu and type "recovery" into the search textbox, and there it is.  Just in case anyone else needs to know.I would still visit the laptop manuf. site and make sure it has all the device drivers for XP...some do not. Solve : formatting problems?

Answer»

i have a movie that is in a bunch of different files that are hls-mh i dont KNOW what that is and it wont open with winrar so if anyone knows how to view it thatd be coolhls-mh
Is it one EXTENSION, two extensions?
Movie source?one EXTENTION heres a picture of the file:
Torrent, I assume?
"hls-mh" in this case is not file extension, but movie title.
This download seems to be corrupted.
Normally, rar COMPRESSED file would list: hls-mh.r01, hls-mh.r02, hls-mh.r03......hls-mh.rar
When double clicked on hls-mh.rar file, it'd combine all .r01, r02, etc. into one movie (.avi) file.
You may right click on one of hls-mh (with book stack icon) file, click Properties, and SEE what it says.
Bad download...

It just all of a sudden did this. Now that I think of it, I believe it started loading slowly after a windows update.

It's not a startup after boot issue, it's a boot issue, you know the page where it's black background says windows xp with the loading bars. That page is there for an extensive amount of time. It used to be around 15 seconds, now it's almost 2 minutes.

The day this issue arrived at first it booted fine quick 15 seconds or so. Then I installed the windows update, rebooted, and then all of a sudden it TOOK around 2 minutes to boot.

I quoted a previous post of mine to show you that I already said that I ran CCleaner. How is booting in Safe Mode?My computer gives me no option to boot into safe mode. Also, now XP is having trouble detecting my dvd drives. Now it only detects my drive and not my burner, and sometimes it wont detect either one after reboot. Windows is really starting to piss me off. I think it's about time to go Mac or Linux.

Forgot to mention Phoenix Bios RECOGNIZES both drives.

I also just opened the case and unhooked both drives and hdd and hooked them back up. Still not recognizing.

DVD burner drive does not show up in device manager.I just restored to 18 days ago, xp boots in 9 seconds. So i guess that's my route. Thanks anyway. As you said, maybe one of updates. That obviously wasn't the culprit. The restore worked until I started to install the disc that came with the mobo. Then after reboot xp took FOREVER to boot. So now I'm reformatting drive, and im not using the quick option this time. My HDD has never been formatted without using the quick option. It may be a problem with the mobo, which sucks because it's brand new. Anyway, I will post something after I do a clean install. We'll be here.Did a clean install and xp booted quickly. I then installed the drivers from the disc that came with the mobo, and all of a sudden xp boots slowly again. The blue bars travel across the screen exactly 75 times before the boot but, once xp does boot my pc starts up extremely fast. Before I installed the chipset drivers the blue bars only traveled across around 15 times, which is the way it used to always be until yesterday it mysteriously started taking longer. This really aggrivates me, especially because I just did a clean install. Oh well, that's Windows for ya.

Problem is now SOLVED. It was just issues with the nvidia chipset drivers. I downloaded the latest installers from the net completely uninstalled old drivers, and then installed new ones. XP boots quickly and normally again. Thanks for all of the attempted help and gained knowledge. Nice job
Thank you for posting back. I learned something, too.

Solve : Windows Install Cleanup?

It list ALMOST all my programs and warns me that I may NEED to reinstall some applications on my system that used Windows Installer to be INSTALLED. CHOOSING remove will make PERMANENT changes. this is scary! What should I do, please, gurus?
i have updated 3 computers with SP3 and have never seen thisWindows Installer Cleanup is a downloadable utility which can remove some applications, but can also break some.
Unless you need to use it, don't try it for the sake of it.thankyou Calum - I am duly warned! You're welcome.
I don't think it's actually a part of XP SP3, it may have been downloaded at another time.Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

Solve : Missing or corrupt windows/system32/config/system?

Answer»

Thanks...

Solve : AUTO CLEAN UP?

Answer»

I am running Windows XL and have programmed it to do an auto clean up to remove the Int Temp Files at a certain time each day as they do not clear themselves out when the computer is shut down.
My problem is that it only goes as far as ASKING me to carry on to clean the selected files and then asks me if I am sure, just as if I had OPENED the prog manually.
How can I get the clean up to complete itself WITHOUT me having to click TWICE to get it done. It means that if I am not at the desk, it doesn't get done.I guess you could have a script to press Enter twice for you.
Do you think something like that might work?I have it set up under the 'Schduled Tasks' via the Control Panel, but it does not complete the task on its own.If you need it to click on confirmation boxes, a script running with the scheduled task should work.

Here's what I'm suggesting.

Code: [Select]set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WScript.Sleep 5000
For i = 1 to 1
    WshShell.SendKeys "{TAB}"
WScript.Sleep 500
    WshShell.SendKeys "{TAB}"
WScript.Sleep 500
    WshShell.SendKeys "{ENTER}"
WScript.Sleep 1000
    WshShell.SendKeys "{ENTER}"
WScript.Sleep 500
Next
WScript.Sleep 5000 means it will wait 5 seconds before starting its next commands.

WshShell.SendKeys "{TAB}" is basically like pressing TAB on the keyboard. I put those in there as an example in case the confirmation boxes aren't selected.

WScript.Sleep 500 means it will wait half a second (500 miliseconds) before executing the next command.

WshShell.SendKeys "{ENTER}" press Enter.

For example, this script will wait 5 seconds before pressing TAB. It will then press TAB again after half a second, and then Enter twice a second apart.

Save that as filename.vbs In Notepad (file --> Save as --> File.vbs) and have it RUN with the other program.

Note: you can CHANGE the order of events simply by changing the time in between the commands or just adding some.

I hope that made sense to you. Thanks, will give it a go.

Solve : how to make system shut down automatically??

Answer»

hello experts,

is there any internal setting/dos shell script to make system shut down automatically after a desired time duration?

for windows xp

regards
sanYou MEAN Command Prompt?

Shutdown /?open command prompt.

to do this, go to start menu > run > cmd

hit enter

and the familiar dialogue box should APPEAR.

now to set up a shutdown timer for a computer with the NAME "pc",  type in the following exactly as it appear

in your case, replace pc with the name of your computer.

shutdown -m pc -t "60" -s

the number inside the brackets after -t represents time before shutdown in SECONDS. HENCE in this scenario, the computer named pc will shutdown by itself in 60 seconds.

note: if you have any open programs such as ms word open, shutdown will interrupted by the "do you wish to save" dialogue box.

if you wish to force all running applications to shutdown without prior warning, then add -f to the command line.

Solve : installing xp on e and booting from e?

Answer»

my problem is that i have 3 hard drives E: is the biggest and has heaps of space on it - c: is a pain in the neck and keeps filling up all the time, can i install xp on e: then boot from or is there another answer. if it means fdisking e: i dont mind starting from scratch as most things are recoverable and there is nothing like a clean sheet. i had a go at xxcopy but it froze. any help would be much appreciated. With some exceptions, you can boot XP from any drive letter. Is e: an external drive? Your computer may or may not boot to external drives. If you want to leave c intact, you can install xp to e and simply choose it from the boot menu every time you boot, or you can wipe all three and let e become the new c. That might be EASIEST. i think  most probably u r refering to the local disk drives(C,D,E)...
if my guess is correct  than u can install on any of the drives.if you want to install it on E drive than simply go ahead and install   this is one of those things which gets u dreaming - in the middle of last night i realised that because e: is so big and empty all i had to do was add another parititon instead of destroying the data with xxcopy.

i could of have created a large partition on e: and loaded xp onto it i suppose.

However before i do that if anyone knows how to have emails stored to a different drive (other than c:) it may save me a lot of trouble also - i can't find anyhing in outlook or outlook express that allows you do do that?  I get rather large emails and it is one of the reasons C: keeps filling up.

If that is achievable i may only have to point MYDOCUMENTS folder to E: which will also save me a lot of room on C: and solve all my problems

all help appreciated  regards ross
i just had another thought - will moving mydocuments to e:  solve my problems with email as welll.   ?  where do all those buggers go?back again!         i found out where all those little creatures go -  they are stored in - C:\Documents and Settings\ross hardy\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{D4D3054C-58B3-41FB-B3B8-1CAFC09A8D82}\Microsoft    --  can i have documents and settings on transferred to e: - i know i can just copy across but can i get the system to point there all the time?  Ok, list out all of your drives and total size of each drive (I mean the actually drive, NOT the partitions), and the connection of those drives (IDE, SATA, USB, etc.)

Then list the partitions that are on each drive. From there, we can decide what's the best way to partition your drives, where to install Windows, where to install programs, etc.

You can alter where most programs store their files, where My Documents is located, etc. but we'll get to that after we see the layout of your current drives and partitions.

e: (NTFS on drive 1) 160.03 GB 148.59 GB free

no other external drives in useHere's what I would do with that.

Make a backup directory on E:, copy EVERYTHING from C: and D: that you want to keep to E:. Since C: and D: are partitions on the 20GB, after you back up your files from them, delete the partitions and make one large 20GB partition. Install Windows here.

At this point you should have two drives, C: (20GB) and E: (160GB). Either:

1) resize the E: partition to ~80GB and make a second 80GB partition on it
or
2) delete the current partition and create 2 new 80GB partitions.

(Note: size the partitions as you wish, like 100GB/60GB, 80GB/80GB... up to you)
In either case, back up whatever you need from E: before partitioning.

Use C: as your system drive with Windows and essential software like Firefox, Office, etc.
Use the new D: to install other programs and games.
Use the new E: for storage, media files, etc.

We'll talk about adjusting your program settings after you've got the drives set up again, so that you can tell your programs where to store their files and such.i now have a problem with ie7-  i cant open additional sites or tabs the only way i can access sitrs is to place the site name in the internet options ADDRESS bar then start ie7 - i tried to download an update from microsoft but it wont let me - i reloaded xp which does not seem to fix it either?  any help appreciated.  regards rossit is the same for links i cannot open ie7 from links - i have to paste the link into te address bar in internet options to load the page - this is confusing

Solve : lan on work computer?

Answer»

Hello again...I have another question...my husband has LAN on his work computer where he SAYS they are controlling all his INTERNET whereabouts...but he has Internet Exp. and I'm not sure what the difference is? Is this giving him a window to still go outside LAN undetected? He can not send email other than work through his Lan network...does Internet Exp. help him to bypass this?
SummerUsing Internet Explorer does not provide a way of bypassing the LAN.  In a work environment, the employer is entitled to set controls over computer use.  Besides, trying to circumvent such controls is not a wise thing to do; it could get a person into trouble.Perhaps the user is not deliberately trying to circumvent the Internet controls PLACED on his work environment.  Perhaps the I/T department has done a poor job.

I once worked in an office where the managers bragged that we couldn't SURF the Internet, although they allowed us (supposedly) access to one web page for a network news AFFILIATE (so we could keep track of anything major going on in the outside world.)  Well, once we went to that page, we could click any link that was available to that page.  (I don't remember if we could enter URL's of our choice, but we weren't as "blocked" from the 'net as our managers liked to brag.

Solve : WinXP continuous loop on start up?????

Answer»

HI,
I am usually able to solve most of my computer problems, but this one is wayyyyy beyond me.
I have Windows XP, and 2 separate operating systems. My main system had a Trojan virus and I have been working on getting rid of it for several days. I have ran the Microsoft virus programs, and Malwarebytes and i finally thought it was gone. I RESTARTED my computer and now it just goes in a continuous loop and wont START my main system. I have tried in safemodes, last good config., and i disabled auto restart and got the error C000021a fatal error, system SHUTDOWN. I am able to LOG onto my second os fine.
Any ideas how to fix this?If you have your x-p disc , try and REPAIR the Os .

Rex. I wont lose any of my stuff, pictures, music and such?Nope. A repair install just repairs Windows. None of your file will be lost.great, thanks I'll give it a try~

any CLUES?

thanksxcopy supports file type exclusion. Place this in your exclude file:

Solve : system password gone ?...?

Answer»

computer has become unusable. My son (who's almsot 14) decided he didn't like having a limited account and looked online (?utube?) and found out how to change things by getting into the system administrator.    When we put on computer, it shows black screen asking for system password    He told us what he used and I put it in.
Some kind of weird looking blue window came up, gave me CHOICES for removing password, which is what I thought I did    I was able to log into my husbands account like normal after that. But he shut down the computer by accident (normal way). When computer was turned back on, up came that black screen again asking for system password!
Since I had removed the password, I didn't understand why this was HAPPENING and also why nothing I tried to do would fix it.  When I had originally changed the password, I put in old password son has used, then left  it blank for new password area to "REMOVE" like it said to.
I am not very knowledgeable about computers, but this is SOMETHING I had never thought to see happen. I myself had never put a passowrd on anything but the users because of reading about what happens when it is lost. It sounds like one huge nightmare. Which is exactly what it feels like now 'cuz microsoft nor Dell will help unless they get thier hands on wads of money that we don't have.
The worst part is that I cant even get the computer to go into "safe" mode or anything. It just endlessly asks for system password that I thought I had removed.  (after all, I DID get husband's user account to open normally and thought things would be fine after that-boy was I wrong    )
How do I get into safe mode again or anytihng that will let me access any user accounts at all?? None of the F* or ANY other things work...I am at a dead end and have been reading online for past 2 days since it happened. PLZ help!!
I know I wanted to learn mor about computers, but not like this!! All we have working now is my laptop... Make sure the BIOS password is not set. You can press a CMOS button on the motherboard or reset a jumper, or remove button cell battery carefully to reset that and put battery back in while system is off.

If it is a password as part of the boot.ini string, like a 3rd party password tool, then you will need an emergency repair disk or a way to boot the system to manually fix this.

You can also use a tool called NTPassword to force change the password of a user, generally an Admin of the system with this tool....
http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

OR..... you are looking at a rebuild of the system or sending it off to the repair shop....

Sorry there is no easier method than the ones above...we tried the removing battery part already -after reading about it somewhere. That unfortunately did nothing. I was afraid to touch anyting else in the hard drive. Was worried about making things worse.
I don't know what my son did to computer to begin with. I asked him and the only thing he told us was the password HE used , and that he used F2 (F two). i was thinking if he had used  F8 maybe things wouldnt be so messed up, but I dont know for sure since I am not a expert (or anything near it).
Is it possible to use my laptop for making a bootup disc then putting it into the messed up desktop cd drive? Because so far, I can't get nothing but the prompt for system password... Take it to a repair shop. It may cost a few $$ but it is better than things getting completely messed up.Without providing a link to the youtube video and/or what your Son installed i'm afraid any advice further at this POINT would be sheer guesswork...

Solve : Shutdown dialog won't come up?

Answer»

I've noticed this weird problem..
I have Windows XP Professional SP3 (I've had SP3 installed SINCE I installed windows last, cause i slipstreamed it), and every time I go to shut down, i click Start > Shut Down, and then nothing happens. My computer just locks up for about 10 minutes, and then finally starts responding again, but no shut down dialog. This just recently started happening, but I can't think of anything i've installed that would cause this.. and no, I don't have system restore enabled, so I can't do that.
Any suggestions?
-JohnPress CTRL+ALT+DELETE and go into the Task Manager and look to see what is eating up the CPU % during shutdown HANG. You will have to sort by % to have the System Idle Process at the top and look at the next few services etc below that and write them down and report back here or search Google with them in reference to system hang to see if you get any hits.

Also look to see if there are any hung apps that might not be in view, but in a hung state.

Also check EVENT Log of system for any error blats. Unsually problems like this will blat about a service or something hanging to give you a direction to go in.

What is happening is that an event is in a hung state and until the timeout it hangs from the sound of it.

Also I have seen this behavior with some HP Printer Software Packages which are flawed, which have CRITICAL security updates for that are not Microsoft Updates, but HP Critical Software Updates where a hacker could get in, and this software is so flawed that it causes the system hangs you report. I saw this with a HP All-in-one 5510 Printer/Fax/Scanner at my company. Ran patch and all was better, no more system hangs and no more vulnerability with HP Software/drivers!!!

Solve : Install MP 10?

Answer»

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, version 2002/service pack 2
256 MB of RAM
Explorer 6

I was told I needed MP 10 to receive video streaming.  I had MP 11.  Followed directions and removed MP 11 - acquired MP 10 setup.  When I try to download MP 10, I get error message, "This version of Windows Technology is INCOMPATIBLE with this version of Windows."  I think my COMPUTER meets all the specifications except RAM.  The specs recommend 512 RAM.  Is this the problem?  If so, how do I increase RAM?   I'm assuming that MP is Windows Media PLAYER.

The software should install if the minimum requirements are met.

To increase RAM you need to purchase compatible RAM and install it.

But LET's go back a step or 4. Window Media Player 11 will play streaming video.  (If you think about it, does it really make sense that basic functionality would be removed from a media player when a new version is released?  [Nope, not even for Micro$oft.])  There was probably an issue with some settings in your web browser or with the video you were attempting to view.  Just to make sure, are you downloading WMP from THIS site?

Although I don't think the RAM is the problem here, I would SUGGEST upgrading it depending on how long you will keep your current computer.
If you're planning on replacing it any time soon, I wouldn't bother upgrading the RAM but if you are planning on keeping your current computer for a while (maybe the next few years) I would suggest getting more RAM.

Solve : Can't get out of Advanced Options Window, (won't boot in Safe Mode or otherwise)?

Answer»

Inspiron 8600 Laptop running Win XP Pro SP2

put my PC in Safemode so I could do a System Restore as it was not working in normal mode... but instead of just tapping F8 repeatedly, found another way to get there by going to MSCONFIG and on the BOOT.INI tab, I selected the /SAFEBOOT option then restarted... I was told that after solving my issue, I could just go back there and uncheck the option...

However, now my PC is in an infinite loop with the Advanced Options Window and will not boot at all- in safe mode or otherwise, and I can't get out of this window... it won't even start using Last KNOWN Configuration..  my screen cycles from Advanced Options Window- counting down from 30 to 0, then goes to Windows XP logo screen, the Dell logo screen with filling BIOS bar, then back to Advanced Options Window again...

Is there a way to get to DOS, then a command line?  Ultimately I want to get back to MSCONFIG and the Systems UTILITY Screen to uncheck what was checked (ie /SAFEBOOT)- that was what started the problem.

Thanks.
Boot to Windows XP CD, and run repair INSTALLATION.1.  Disable Automatic Restart.  From the Windows Advanced Options Menu select the item "Disable automatic restart on system failure" if there is such an option.  This should break the reboot cycle and hopefully force a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).  Record the the message text and numbers exactly as they appear and post them here.  An internet search on "exact" substrings of the message frequently identify the problem and resolution.

2.  RECOVERY Console.  If you get a Windows XP Professional SP2 Installation CD, you may boot to recovery console (from the CD) and attempt to fix your current installation.  Try these commands in the following order with normal system boot in between to see if it resolved the issue:

    a.  chkdsk /p
    b.  chkdsk /r
    c.  fixboot
    d.  bootcfg /rebuild

3.  Safe Mode.  If you just want to eliminate the "Safe Mode" hard drive boot, start with the above "bootcfg /rebuild" command, ALTHOUGH I'm not optimistic that will resolve anything.

Solve : USB 2.0 extension cable Not Recognized?

USB 2.0 EXTENSION cable Not Recognized
Please HELP Me ……..?
When I connect a USB 2.0 extension cable - M/F. 1.5 Meter Extension cable A-A
My computer Prompts as
Pen Drive Not Recognized
Memory Card Reader Not Recognized
Web Camera - Working Normally
Bluetooth dongle Working Normally

And

When I Connect A four Port hub
I Can use only 1 Hub at a time and the other 3 Hub are Not Recognized.

i use Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2

What Should I Do to over come this Problem..?
Will internal USB Card over come this Problem .......?USB Extension CABLES and Hubs by themselves usually aren't 'recognized' by your computer, as your computer is not even supposed to 'know' that they are there.

Do DEVICES that you plug into your USB extension cable function properly? Also, do devices that you plug into your four port hub function properly? If they do not, the problem is that either your computer does not have a proper driver for the device, or your USB cable, hub, or device are damaged.1.  Do your USB devices work properly without the extension cable plugged in?  If not, which one would you like to get working?  Pick one and only one for now.

2.  Is this a laptop or desktop computer?  What is its make and model number if "brand name"; otherwise make and model number of motherboard?

3.  Please clarify:

Solve : DVD Drive/burner Problem?

Answer»

I have a windows XP Media center HP pavilion a1310n. It came with a DVD drive/ burner. I went to put in my Handycam DVD+RW and my computer says their is nothing their, but when i put in a regular DVD it works.  I put it in my other computer and it open the files on it.  I don't know what the DVD drive/burner is called, All I know it that it has LIGHTSCRIBE.  Does anyone know why??   Is there any more info i can give to be more helpful to solve this problem. That is nice machine, comes standard with 1gb ram but can install up to 4gb.

But that does not solve your problem.  First how old is the machine, is it still under warrany?
I don't know what the DVD drive/burner is called, All I know it that it has lightscribe.  Does anyone know why??   Are ASKING why it has lightscribe or why it won't run your Handycam dvd?

lightscribe = label burner

Actually lightscribe's BURN the actual DVD/CD's themselves. They come with impregnated ink in the blank media. Much NICER than labels as labels can ruin a burner.

Smitty have you installed the handycam software on the machine ? ?
It may be needed to translate/read the cam DVD's...Check your camcorder instruction manual. You may have to format the disk to make it read in the DVD drive. I'm asking about the Handycam DVD+RW

Ok I think i might know what the problem is. Its most likely the format then because the dvd from the camera worked on my other computer.

The Camera is not actually mine. I'm USING for a school project so i'll check with them and see if they can change the format

ThanksLet us know and good luck.

Solve : Sound keeps going to zero?

Answer»

I have a WinXP computer, with Sigma Tel-C Major Audio for my sound card.  Every so often, the volume goes to 0, even when I know I had SET it to the maximum.  And this happens with the volume control box that you get when you double click on the volume icon in the status bar.  Its the WAV level in the volume control bar that goes to zero, all other controls are the same.

Why does  this happen, when I dont modify the volume setting
Start with reinstalling sound driver. The sound works well right now, it just goes to zero every so often.  So you think maybe the sound driver is corrupted or messed up?
Worth to TRY.i tried it, but I WONT know if its fixed the problem, because there is no CERTAIN time when the sound goes to zero.

is there anything else i can try?

Solve : need help.....computer only can run in safe mode but not normal mode?

Answer»

as title stated...my computer only can run safe mode for a couple of days ago....after i press the power up button, it run normally until it reach the windows icon....after the windows icon...the screen turn black and soon it restart...

i have RAN system restore and also TRIED to untick the startup items but it still doesnt work...

can anybody help me? i appreciate ur help very much thank you.Do you have Windows XP CD?no, my windows cd lost to somewhere else....got any other alternative way to do except reformat?Do you have any important data there?
Do you have Recovery CDs?
What brand, and model of the computer?Maybe its nothing to serious. Have you done the basic things before you attempt to format and re-install or run the recovery disc.

If i was you i would first boot up into safe mode, run disc cleanup, run disc defragmenter.

reboot into Safe mode with networking download AVG and CCleaner (crap cleaner) and finally grab a copy of spybot search and DESTROY install the three programs and update them, run ccleaner, run spybot and finally run avg.

Was anything found out of the ordinary if so where they all fixed up?

If there where alot of problems found i would then suggest trying a normal boot again and see what happens, if it hangs it maybe a driver issue, or registry issue, also what start up items did you untick? And whats still available?also, you can RIGHT click your HD - properties -Tools tab and you will see "error checking"  click the tab that says check now- put a check mark that says "Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors- click start. you will have to restart your PC and let the computer do its job.

also, go into safemode with Networking and update your antivirus and scan your PC and check for spyware.

it would be nice if you had your restore CD... contact the manufacture and order it. You may NEED it in the future.

good Luck!

Whenever I am listening to or watching any type of media my computer works fine.  Then if i stop/pause the file and try to restart it again my SOUND doesn't work.  I have to close the lid on my computer and then open it again for the sound to start working again.  I have a Sony Vaio... any help would be great... and please in lamens TERMS...The first THING to try always is to reinstall the sound driver.  To do this , go to Star. right click My computer. Click on manage and then  select device manager.  In the list on the right , click on the plus sign next to Sound, video and game controllers.  In the list that shows up, double click on each one until you find the one that shows you a driver TAB.  Click the driver tab and click reinstall.  And let the computer search from the internet.  One the driver is reinstalled, restart the computer, everything should work fine
