Solve : Windows XP Professional Boot Problem(s)?

Answer»

My computer simply refuses to boot up.

I start up my computer and the Gateway screen comes up. Sometimes it stops here, but most of the time it continues on.
When it gets to where Windows should be starting up I recieve either a error message stating that there is a disk read error and that I need to restart or that some system32 file is corrupt.

When I booted and hit "F8" I was taken to a MENU that gave me the option of booting from a PARTICULAR operating system, there were none listed so I went into advanced options.

Once the "Safe Mode" option worked and I was able to boot into Windows, but when I restarted after that I was never able to get it to do it again. Basically nothing on the advanced options menu seemed to help.

I began frantically searching for some sort of Windows XP disk. All I could find was a disk titled "Gateway: Microsoft Windows XP Professional System Recovery CD/DVD."
I inserted the disk and set the CD drive to be the first to boot. So now, when the computer decides it wants to read the disk, after the Gateway screen I get a message saying something along the lines of hit "r" to enter the recovery menu. I hit "r" and I'm led to a menu with two options.
The first option is to start a normal system recovery. When you choose this you either get a "disk read error" or a "I/0 error."
The second option is a "full system recovery" and it WARNS that all data on the hard drive will be erased if you choose it. I am a little reluctant to pick that option, because once upon a time I did that on a Windows 98 and I "killed" it.

Sometimes, every once in a great while, the computer will start normally. When it does start normally virus scans show no viruses and everything seems to run fine. That is until you shut it down and attempt to reboot.

Also I must note that I can get into BIOS, but most of the time when I try to bring up that menu the computer locks up on the Gateway Screen.

As for system specs, all I can give you is what I remember:

Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP3
Model: Gateway E4300
Processor: Intel Pentium 4
RAM: 1024 MB
CPU: 2 CPUS 3.00GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600
Direct X: 9.0c

Hard Drive Order:
1. C:\ (WDC WD800BD-22JM)
2. F:\ (Maxtor OneTouch)

Boot Device Priority:
1. CD/DVD ROM Drive
2. Hard Disk Drive
3. Floppy Drive
4. Ethernet

If you need any more information that is available through BIOS just ask.You don't have a CD or floppy disk in the computer when you boot right.I assume no but,who knows.

Did you try 'last known good configuration' when you were in safemode?Could be that your hard drive is CORRUPTED. Run diaganostics disk.

Until I put the recovery disk in I didn't have anything in the floppy or CD drives. As for the "last known good configuration" it didn't work from the advanced options menu during boot and I haven't been able to get it to log into Safe Mode since it did that one time.

For the first part...
I'm assuming I need to download the program, write it to a disk, and run that disk on my desktop.
I can't burn any disks from this computer (aka my crappy laptop). The problem computer is my main computer and it is the only one with disk writing capabilities.
I could download it to a Flash Drive, but I'm not sure how I would get that to work without Windows.Have someone else DLoad and burn it to CD for you...it needs to be bootable to run.
Also check to see the IDE cables are snug.

Hi there, I have been having some issues with how Windows is running.

When I run the disk defragmenter it constantly freezes when it hits this point

My AVG antivirus used to lock up at that point as well...curious.

Solve : XP SP2 won't restart/turn off?

Answer»

Hi, a couple of things I don't know how to fix:

When I try to restart or TURN off Windows, it gets to the 'windows is shutting down' screen but doesn't actually turn off. Does anyone know why/how to fix please?

ALSO when I first press restart/turn off I get the 'End Now/Cancel' timer box that says EAXModule is still RUNNING - but I have no idea what this is. I have a creative X-Fi Fatal1y soundcard but don't have the front panel connected up, it's in Entertainment mode all the time but EAX is not switched on - any ideas please?

I have also had the same type of box but with DLLsomething INSTEAD of EAXModule?

Any ideas would be great. This is directly RELATED to the card...either it's the wrong driver or it was installed improperly...

Many others have had this issue...Here...

Solve : Shadowing Effect?

Answer»

My computer TOOK on this kind of layered shadow effect. A small example of what's going on is in the attachment.

I have a Windows XP

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]You mean the blue rectangle around the name of the file?I mean behind the icon, there's like a ghost. This is with like, everything on my computer. And it seems to SHOW itself the most in the center of the screenYou mean the desktop background, or the slight shadow behind the icon itself?

If it's that shadow you're talking about, RIght Click My Computer and to go Properties.
Click on the Advanced Tab and then click on Settings under Performance.
Go through that Visual Effects Tab.Still nothing.
And that effect applies to EVERYTHING on my computerYou sure you did this?

And pressed OK?yepQuote from: CARBON Dudeoxide on November 22, 2008, 11:54:08 PM

You mean the desktop background, or the slight shadow behind the icon itself?
Try a different background color...the background was PURE gray.
My problem is the shadow
And it seems to be fine on STARTUP, but it gradually looks badOKYeah.....

What about Right Clicking the Desktop and then clicking Refresh?sounds like a monitor problem. I don't think anybody else can see it in the screenshot.

Do you have this behaviour with another monitor?

I now that an hear it all the time but I just dont think restating at times when you mentioned something should be nessary. The red ball fell. The red ball is red. See what I mean it becomes repetative.

your red ball analogy doesn't really hold water. the first sentence "the red ball fell" conveys the information provided in the second, since it also specifies the color of the ball. Now, if you had sentences such as "the red ball fell" and "the red ball popped", you could say they were repetitive, but on the other hand, you can simply say "the red ball fell, and popped" and provide the same information, with the benefit of the second verb actually having a subject, instead of forcing the reader to disambiguate, possibly wrongly, exactly what the subject was.

As an example, take your post:

Quote from: squall_01 on November 17, 2008, 10:55:57 AM
dont now if you can flash it back but there is a way to roll it back. Service pack three is the most recent heard there still was issues.

It's informative, and answers the questions. However- look closely at the second sentence. Disambiguating it leads us back to the first sentence, about BIOS flashing. I, for one, was thinking exactly what Dias posted.

Now, we could reconstruct the sentence to be less ambiguous:
Quote
Not sure if you could roll back a BIOS flash, Some manufacturers allow it. You might need a more recent service pack to get windows to install properly.
Sure, it really doesn't change a lot- but- it is now clear that the service pack comment is referring to a windows service pack, as opposed to say a BIOS service pack... whatever that is.

It might get repetitive, but the idea is the pass ideas to other people, not save yourself time typing.

Take special notice of my above sentence. you'll notice my first clause was "It might get repetitive..." Which helps you identify exactly what I was referring to.

Basically- it doesn't matter how well-informed your response when nobody can make heads or tails of it.

Thank you, this has been a grammar/idea provision lesson by BC_Programmer.

Now anyway- I have an on-topic suggestion-

Non-SP versions of XP could not access more then 137GBs of disk space, if I RECALL, and have problems with some very large drives. TRY creating a slipstream CD, viperx45, and see if you can install XP with the slipstreamed SP.Yes that is true however you still did get what I was saing. Yes thats all so but you should be able to install xp without any problems.SQuall does not speak or write English. Everybody knows that.
I dont do it fluently there is a big differnce. dont like to use the spell check on here ether hard to get too. Should have mentioned that.Is it hard to get to because it's RIGHT at the bottom of every Post page ? ?spelling isn't the issue anyway- it's grammar. I'm Pro-Grammar, after all. HA HA! get it, programmar! lol.

I think he may want to know how to delete a locked file but doesn't know how to ask us.....
He keeps saying about doing automatic......

Or of course it could a prank...

Why would anyone want to delete explorer.exe while the system is running? Or at any other time?

OK I will tell you why, because I want to set up a prank for my friends to deliberatly freak them out in a bat file script loaded onto their computer to delete explorer.exe at the same time as deleting taskmgr.exe therefore they cannot load WINDOWS lol unless they know how to open it another way but then again, it would be fun to do... so? Is anyone GOING to tell me how to do it?I know how to delete corrupt/locked/bad files with screwed up scripts but I just want to learn how to script 1 thing in particular, so can you help? I don't want a manual command/script I want automatic so when you load it, it automatically deletes the specific file which I have set, I have tried all of the things on the internet commands and all and they don't work? So are you the person who can help me or are you a drifer?I don't know what a drifer is, but quite frankly I don't care.

Read the rules.

Topic closed.I feel sorry for your friends. You PROBABLY don't even know how to repair the damage that this 'prank" would cause.

Solve : hello...new here need help with using re-boot disk?

Answer»

Hi all. My friend is here, HP laptop runs loops on start up. Tried using system recovery disk and hard drive is not recognizing it.

Friend did not have up to date virus protection................ahhhh hem.

Anyone willing to help? Burn this disk with another computer and then use it on the INFECTED computer.

Avira AntiVir Rescue System

1. Download the Avira AntiVir Rescue System
- If you need a free burning application, CDBurnerXP works on all operating systems from Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 onwards.
2. Place a blank CD in your burner and double-click on the downloaded file.
3. The PROGRAM will automatically burn the CD for you.
4. Place the burned CD into the affected computer and start the computer with the CD in the CD tray.
5. On the bottom left side of the screen there are 2 flags. Using your mouse click on the British flag to use English.
6. Click on the Configuration button.

- Select Scan all files
- Select Try to repair infected files and Rename files, if they cannot be removed
- Select Scan for dialers
- Select Scan for joke programs (Jokes)
- Select Scan for games
- Select Scan for spyware (SPR)

7. Click on Virus scanner
8. Click on Start scanner at the bottom of the screen.

9. Let Avira finish it's scan and then REMOVE any threats found and then exit out of the scanner.
10. Take the CD out of the CD/DVD tray and then restart the computer.
Thank you. Done. Started computer with disk in. STILL looping, will not recognize.

Have blue screen with or F10 key then laptop loops.

Suggestions?Moving this to the Windows forum so others with more experience in this area will give their input.Progress.......perhaps.

Made it through........laptop finally caught the disk and ran it.

Now, it SHOWS 35 files scanned, and 7 directories.

Is that all we can do? Still need hard drive to recognize system restore disk.

Really appreciating the help.......many thanksNext messages with recovery disk.................."no hard drive found"Sounds like the hard drive is going South...
The more you try to use it the further away any chances of data recovery get.I would back up everything you can (starting with your most important files, then other files, pictures, ect).
After you have your data backed up, take the laptop to the HP Service Center.

Solve : Computer Reboots At Startup!?

Answer»

eMachines
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
1gig RAM
200gig HDD
Windows XP

6 months ago I noticed my computer would reboot occasionally when I'd play WoW. I thought it was a overheating issue so I opened up my comp and found that my CPU fan and heatsink were caked with dust. As I lifted up the heatsink to clean it I DAMAGED my CPU, breaking a few pins. Now I had an even bigger problem on my hands.

This week I finally got a new CPU, I installed it and booted up and the computer STILL rebooted at startup. But it seemed like every time I rebooted it would get farther into the startup, eventually I got to my desktop and was able to use my comp for about 30 minutes. I restarted the comp to see what would happen and it's never been able to get to the desktop since. It will restart right before it displays the desktop. Sometimes it will get the BSOD, the messages I've gotten so far are:

1) NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS
2) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Thinking it was a hardware problem I did a few things to pinpoint the issue:

1) Booted with a brand new PSU (Still restarted)
2) Installed working RAM from another computer (Still restarted)
3) Booted with a hard drive from another computer (Still restarted)
4) Took the hard drive and booted it using another computer (Booted up fine)

I also tried booting up with an Ubuntu Linux CD which I had no problems with. So my conclusion is that it's a motherboard issue. Can I get everyone's opinion and what I can do to solve or further pinpoint the problem? Thanks!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906866

NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS
you install more than three programs that are related to file security. For example, you install more than three antivirus programs or file-encryption programs.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818501

Some good reading to start with.....

Maybe those error messages are a separate issue from my rebooting problem? I don't get those messages every time I try to startup my comp. Also as I stated in my original post, when I took the hard drive and started it in another computer it worked fine, however when I took the hard drive from another computer and started it in the problem computer I encountered the same problem.Hello
Can u start in Safe Mode? If u can start in Safe Mode it is some kind of DRIVER issue.I don't think it is a hardware problem, u have pretty much done your homework with the swapping of parts. That only leaves one item u have not check. Try going into the BIOS and select the BIOS defaults. Let us know the results. No I can't get into safe mode it gives me a long list of files/drivers?Quote from: 5thape on May 15, 2009, 12:21:40 AM

No I can't get into safe mode it gives me a long list of files/drivers?

This is normal....you have to be patient and let it finish loading.
I've seen this take over 10 minutes on some machines.okay let me give it some time and get back to you if i get into safe mode...

i just tried it, it'll list the files/drivers then the comp reboots

Solve : Screen Resolution Issues?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm having an issue with my laptop. The issue is that every time I GO to change the RESOLUTION up to 1024 again in my preferences, or even up to 800 for that matter, the resolution changes, but then the actual screen area shrinks smaller into the upper left corner, and gets surrounded by BLACK screen space to the right and to the bottom. The black around the screen exists even when the computer is first starting up before Windows initializes. I've tried to uninstall/reinstall/upgrade the DRIVERS for the video card to no avail. I hope someone can help me with this! The only way I can get a full screen display is to change the resolution to 1600 but then I can barely READ the text despite that I've had to change the DPI setting to 120 DPI. Please help!

Solve : Application Errors?

My Windows XP isn't working properly (not loading up CORRECTLY) and many application errors keep flashing up every 5 minutes or so. The messages are headed with the following...

gtb1a.tmp.exe
OfficeWatson: dwwin.exe

MSN_SL: msn_sl.exe

with this message... "The instruction at 0x7c90de6e referenced memory at 0x5f0b001e The memory COULD not be read. Click OK to terminate program"

What can I do/ download to clear up the problems? It seems you have been infected. Download or USE a good anti-virus software and a Anti-malware software like MALWAREBYTES. Run full system scans and then see where we are up to. GTB1A.tmp is an unknown issue at the moment in the sense if it's malcious or not but if the question is being ASKED then..

Solve : Best free anti-virus program for 2002 XP Home??

Answer»

isntall service pack 3 instead. Actually, install sp3 and then install avast instead of avgI'd suggest, you install SP2.
Don't rush SP3.
I don't recommend AVG.
Your CHOICES:

- Avast! free antivirus: HTTP://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

- free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will ALSO allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine ONE Comodo product with some other product.

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

Solve : Does cleaning the pc helps longen the life span of the hardware??

Answer» PLS help. . .Cleaning out the dust from inside the computer improves air flow. Heat BUILDUP is the big threat to most electronic devices.
It is important the the fans are not clogged with dust. Othkrewise the fans have reduced ability to move air.
External cleaning may not be as important. But is is EASY to do, so just KEEP it looking good. Just don't forget to CHECK the inside every six months.

Solve : black screen problem??

Answer»

I left the computer for about a half an hour, and when I returned, there was a black screen with white text. It has a bunch of system info and then at the bottom it says:
Pri Master Hard Disk: S.M.A.R.T. STATUS BAD, Back up and replace
Press to run SETUP.

I've tried escape and turning on and off. This just appeared from nowhere. I had notice slow performance recently and had run several scans, but nothing major came up. I felt there was still a VIRUS and was going to back up my thousands of photos, which I fear now I may have lost.

Help!!!!
ThanksBasically, SMART is a hard drive self-test that detects the 'health' of the hard drive. What your computer is saying, is that your hard drive has died and needs replacing. If at all possible, you should slave the drive to get all of your data off of it, and replace.

The drive was getting slower not from a virus, but because of the fact it was failing. It had to READ the same information over and over to retrieve the data it wants to read. If it fails to read the information altogether it will generate an error. A slow computer should ALWAYS be investigated - they don't slow down for no reason!

If you're lucky, the drive might not have died completely, and your data will be recoverable when you slave the drive.

If you definitely NEED those photos, and slaving the drive does not work, you can try a data recovery service which will retrieve data from dead hard drives. ONE example of such a service is OnTrack but there are many more. Please note however, this is a very expensive service. Expect it to be in the 500+ dollar range.Hurry take the hard drive out and put it in the freezer. There may not be much time. Be careful with it. Put it in a ziplock baggie of some sort. HURRYY!! Your time is limited. When was the last time you blew your computer out with a can of compressed air?

Solve : No sound --device manager says card is working but. . .?

Answer»

No Sound. Either from speakers or working headphones. Windows XP SP2, already tried the fixes on this forum. No option in BIOS for sound card (or controls for sound card are under a different listing that I'm not aware of). According to Hardware profiles sound card is working fine. no hardware conflicts. However, in control panel under audio icon audio properties is in grey and indicates no audio installed. Delete, modifications buttons for audio drivers under the system device manager is in grey won't allow me to delete. Deleted hardware in Device manager, computer found card. Can't or don't know how to delete drivers to allow windows to REINSTALL. Downloaded and installed a more current driver for card--didn't fix problem. I get soft beeps for error for postings in Quickbooks but in no other software. When try to play Cd's get this error 0x00D11BA--can't play file. No other programs that I know of are using device when this error is DISPLAYED. This was working last week! Please help!!!!Thanks. What kind of sound card did the computer find?

Is your sound via built-in / on-board sound, or is there a separate sound card installed?Wrong or missing Drivers...
As stated above...more info.Mcwoode, I had that exact same problem with a computer I was fixing. Finally, in desperation, I downloaded a diagnostic program for my hard drive, burned it to a disk and ran it. About 3/4 WAY through the program I received a "do you hear the SONG" . Sure enough, my sound problem was fixed. it's a sound card on the motherboard. According to the device manager a Realtek AC 97 Audio card. Device manager lists 2 sets of "legacy audio drivers". Tried to delete them but right click and properties does not leave any options for deleting. Downloaded driver from net for this card, didn't fix problem. Any ideas? Thanks McwoodeI have a Compac EVO desktop with the same card. The first issue was the drivers, then open the audio controls (spkr) icon and check to see if the audio is on mute.

SIMPLE fer sure but that was it.Thanks. In the control panel when I click on the sound and audio icon it comes up grey--no audio device installed (and I know there's a sound card on this system!!). tried to download and install a more current direct X driver and it wouldn't let it install something about a corrupted CAB file. Any ideas??? What's a CAB file??? Thanks

Solve : Removing the Screensaver?

Answer»

Every so often, my screen either goes totally black or it goes black with the standard XP icon floating around. Seems to have a mind of its own!
One assumes this is the screensaver kicking in, which l suppose means processes should continue in background. However if l'm running say, Spybot S&D, the file count seems to freeze whilst the "screensaver" is in operation.
Did a google and a suggestion was to go into regedit, and in one of the hk_keys alter a value to "2". Did this, but blowed if l can remember what and when. It still persists though.
GOING into Start | Control Panel | Display | Screensaver, the screensaver is Windows XP, which shows the icon moving around, and the wait is set at 10 mins.
As l do not leave the computer running 24/7 how do l get rid of the screensaver option?
Thanks
Display properties>screensaver>set to none ..... the topmost option...click Apply. Can I start by saying do NOT mess with the registry. So many problems are made worse by changing the registry. And do not be fooled into buying a registry fix programme.. anyone on this site will tell you how destructive they can be to your system.
Anyway have you checked your power SETTINGS? Especially hibernation settings? On a laptop you need to go into 'control panel' then ' change battery settings' if its a desktop then.. I'm not quite sure of the exact folder but it will be in control panel. Let me know how you get on.Sorry guys, usually like to reply as soon as, but have been a bit tied up.
Set screensaver to "none". It's so blimmin' obvious!

Solve : Windows update notification icon missing?

Answer»

I have just INSTALLED a fresh XP SP3 and all went o/k. I now have some windows updates ready for installation. I know this because when shut down the machine there is a notice with the shutdown button. This notice states that I can click on a link that will install the updates as the system shuts down.

Unfortunately, this way I don't know what is being updated. How can I get the notification ICON back into the system tray?
ThanksYou can configure Automatic Updates in Windows XP using the System applet within the Control Panel. Click Start, POINT to Control Panel, and open the System applet. From the System Properties dialog box, click the Automatic Updates tab.

Once there...select the following radio button: Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them

Click the OK button...and the next time there are updates...they will be downloaded automatically...and you will be notified in the System Tray that new downloads are ready to be installed. Thanks,
That is the setting I have. No Icon, just the notice in the shutdown windows.
Frank...

This is the setting that normally works...and does show the icon in the System Tray when the updates have been downloaded and are ready for installation. Is it possible you just didn't notice it when you began the shut down process?

You can also check to see if the icon is being hidden by checking the following:

Check whether Windows XP is hiding Inactive Icons...
Right Click on taskbar and choose properties and uncheck "Hide Inactive Icons".

If you did not notice the icon and began shutdown...the updates will automatically begin installation...and should not be interrupted during this process. If you did interrupt this process...there is the possibility you may have corrupted the installation process.Sorry, I incorrectly stated that the notice states that I can click on a link that will install the updates. In fact it's the other way around. The notice states "Click here to shutdown without installing the updates". CLICKING the Turn Off button installs the updates.

I always press the link to shut down "without updating" so that I can click on the icon after booting. But in this case there is no icon after booting.I would try this...

Run your updates manually and use the Custom or Express option to download and install your updates. Also note...that during installation of these updates, any antivirus software you use should be disabled, as NOTED during the download/installation process.

For more information, visit this Microsoft KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910340Looks like I need to do it manually.
Thanks a lot for your help. You're welcome...

This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose "Switch To" to activate the busy program and correct the problem.

This HAPPENS EVERY time we log on to the computer as we are trying to bring up an Internet Explorer window to surf the net. I do not know what it means or how to STOP it from happening. Any suggestions?Did you call your ISP?

Solve : Sieve benchmark?

Answer»

In the olden days of just Dos, I used the sieve.exe benchmark often to see differences between computers.

Now, with Windows NT style computers, this benchmark is almost useless with process priorities and such like. My Sieve.exe in a cmd.exe window runs for about 30 seconds, but the CPU % is only about 7 - 10%. On another computer I noticed the CPU % is only 0.3%. These are not very meaningful.

I know that this sieve is no longer very useful, but I am used to it.

I am running Windows XP SP3.
How do I give this cmd.exe window 100% of CPU time?
ThanksIf you want to measure, in a meaningful way, how fast a modern 32 or 64 bit system runs a 16 bit 8086 DOS program, with NOTHING else using the cpu, because that is what "100% cpu" means, I reckon you'd have to BOOT the MACHINE from a DOS floppy.

But you could see here

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1545365/how_to_speed_up_windows_xp_change_cpu.html

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I was just interested in how the cpu performs and compare it with another cpu.
You brought up another problem for me. The FACT that my sieve.exe program is a 16 bit program and MAY have little relationship to how fast the cpu would run with a 32 bit application.
I had a look at your link and it talks about process priorities. I tried to set my processes to high and real with no difference in performance.

So, now I need to find a 32 bit cpu benchmark.

Solve : system restore xp?

Answer»

Hello All,

My wife's emachines (T3065) pc seems to have officially died. I have the restore CDs in which I have been trying to restore the XP Operating SYSTEM.

Mscdex.exe says it is already running
CDR101 says Not ready reading drive R.....any suggestions?Quote

pc seems to have officially died
What exactly happened? What are the symptoms? If you are not worried about losing all of the data (all of the pictures, videos, music etc...) on that computer, do this:

You need to boot to the CD. Do this:

When you first turn your computer on, before windows loads, you will see a message that says to press a certain key to enter setup. Pay attention, as the message may flash very quickly. It is usually an Fkey or esc or del. Tap this key as the computer starts up - before windows starts to load.

This will take you into BIOS. You use the ARROW keys to navigate through BIOS.

In BIOS you want to look for Boot order or Boot sequence or maybe even just Boot. You want to set your CD drive as the first boot device. You usually use the plus and minus keys to move your devices around in the boot order.

Once you have your CD drive set as the first boot device, place the CD in the master CD drive. Now exit setup and SAVE changes (F10).

The computer will now reboot. You may see a message that says: "Press any key to boot to CD". Just keep tapping the space bar as the computer is starting back up (before windows loads). You will HEAR the Cd start spinning in the drive and see a blue screen with the word "setup" at the top.

Once all of the files have loaded, enter setup. Press F8 to agree to the license agreement. Now you should see a screen LIKE this one:

You want to install a fresh copy of windows.

Follow this order

1. Delete partitions
2. Create a new partition
3. Format your partition (to setup windows on the selected item press enter)

Keep in mind that this will completely wipe out the hard drive and erase all of the data on that computer! Make sure that you have your windows product key. You need it. Setup will let you get this far, but if you don't have that key You will be left with a blank hard drive!

If you choose to do this, the very first thing you should do after the install is make sure that all of your drivers loaded.
Click Start then Run and type in devmgmt.msc and press enter.
If you see any yellow exclamation marks you will need a driver for that device. Your computer should have came with a driver CD. If you don't have it the Emachines website will have drivers available for download.

Post back if you need anymore help.thanks for the help....here is the situation that I am facing. I have the restoration CDs. When the CD is not in I try to boot up and it takes me to the screen that says start windows normally, in safe mode, safe mode with command prompt ect....Regardless of which one I SELECT it reboots and takes me straight back to that screen. I have no options to press any of the function keys or the delete. I have tried them all but I still cannot access the BIOS steup.

When I boot up with the restoration CD the DOs screen flashes for a few seconds that says Starting Windows Millenium Emergency BOOT then goes to the DOS screen "System Restore Menu / Windows XP"
1) Restore Windows XP
2) Boot to Command prompt from CD-Rom

Please select 1 or 2:

If I select 1 then is says all contents will be lost press any key, then Y or N is you want to continue. I press Y and it says "CDR101:Not Ready reading drive R Abort, Retry, Fail?"

If I select 1 it says Bad command or file name.

I am stuck at what to do next. It looks like you need new CD drive.

config.sys and autoexec.bat are text files.

he needs to boot to that boot disk and run the commands:

Code: [Select]SYS C:
copy command.com C:\
copy config.sys C:\
copy autoexec.bat C:\

then it will boot from the HD; and autoexec.bat and config.sys will be on C:\, as well.

I did it (see below picture) and it seemed to work good. Now what?

edit the files to add the proper DEVICE lines we covered earlier. Make sure tthat hte MSCDEX and the "DEVICE" line for the driver use the same name.

No one has told me how to edit the files yet. How do i edit them?Open them in Notepad...
NOTE: save the existing ones as .bak files in case you screw up...I did the config.sys (picture below).
But I can't open the autoexec.bat, it tell me it can't open with notepad.
Also can i get step-by-step directions from here?

[attachment deleted by admin]So how do I get autoexec.bat to open in notepad? You can follow the advice from this PAGE of the CH site. You'll have to use the EDIT command to change the autoexec file.Squall, there were CDs during Windows 3.1/DOS days. How do you think games like The 7th Guest, PHANTASMAGORIA, and Mechwarrior I & II were installed and played? Phantasmagoria alone had 7 CDs if I remember right. 7th Guest was one of the first CD-ROM games, it was only made for DOS.

Solve : C000218 BSOD-x64,No Disk, NTFS?

Answer»

Hi
I have c0000218 registry failure cannot load the hive file.Safe mode, lastgood, nothing
works. have read pages of information and have become more confused. I have XP x64 and NTFS. I do NOT have the CD but it is genuine.
I have read about bootdisks, downloading a recovery console and repair installs,on this
site
and
others
but I don't know what I can do with x64 , NTFS, and no CD.
Apologies for briefness, I am writing on a PSP. I will have access to PC tomorrow.Hey there, is your computer a name brand or a home built computer? If it is a name brand you can easily go to the manufacturer website and order recovery disks for about $15.

Past that you may need to post as much information you can about your computer and what did or what may have caused this.
Hello,
The computer is a Soltek Qbic. It has been having BSODs and_corrupt_files
when RUNNING GAMES, so I ran a couple chkdsk and then Auslogic Defrag. The computer restarted successfully once, and then I think it did chkdsk and had c0000218 right afterwards.

Thank you for your help.I have the recovery console on a CD, should I use it to do chkdsk or the series of commands involving deleting and copying files?Well I was looking for something like Dell, Gateway ect... Those you can easily get recover disks for. Googled your computer and from what I saw its home built or did some form of Windows come with it? Do you REMEMBER anything you could have changed before this error?
Yes, I can't even find a working website for the company. I don't think he homebuilt it, but I would not be surprised. The computer is my brother's old computer, and he does not have the CD, so I assume it never had one.

This is a vague timeline of what happened before the error.
1. A month ago, I ran a virus scan after suspecting my flash drive was infected. I ran Spybot Search and Destroy and Spyware Terminator.
2. After that, I had BSODs when running the computer for about 20 minutes, and immediately if watching an online video or game.
3. After updating various drivers and changing memory management, the computer would not fail when doing normal use, only when running games (single player games worked, but not online games.)
4. I started GETTING much more "Corrupt files please run chkdsk" on various files, and only an occasional BSOD.
5. I read about Disk Defragmenting and I think this is a good idea. My Add/remove programs never worked, so I had to delete folders to uninstall, which I suppose left many fragments. I ran the Windows Disk Defrag PROGRAM, but it had an error and closed. I downloaded Auslogic Disk Defrag, and it went much faster and worked. It said after defragging the C: drive (which windows is on) that speed was improved 9% and the D: drive 18%. I thought this was good, and my problems were solved.
6. A couple restarts later, I get this error. I tried safe mode, then last good configuration, but nothing worked.

I need to print Word files off of it before Monday, so I am really getting nervous.

I have read of several cures that might work, but I am concerned whether they will work for my specific problem.
1. Repair install with CD (I am talking to friends to borrow one, but apparently XP x64 is not popular).
2. Recovery console (I have it on a CD, but I don't know whether to do chkdsk or a series of commands as listed in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545).
3. Bootdisks

Thank you for your help.Well as far as printing files off I have a temporary soultion. You can download and burn a disk of Ubuntu. Its a linux disk that can run right from the cd-rom without being installed. Just put it in and boot from cd-rom. There is several different boot options in Ubuntu and you may need a certain x64 but I know its available. Some tinkering and you will get it, like I said it doesn't install anything so dont worry about messing anything up. Just make sure you select "Run Live" or "Run from Disk" cant remember exactly. Or you can just pull your hard drive out and put into another computer. Seems kinda tight with that box though.

I cant help much with the long term. Without a recover disk or Windows disk you cant reinstall unless you buy a new XP disk ( you may have to do) I think they go for $50-$100 now.

Or if you like Ubuntu you can just install that as your Operating System and use it. Its great, free, and good support. It's not completely compatable with Windows and takes some time learning.

Hi!

Thanks for your advice of Ubuntu! I had never thought Linux because all I had heard was "Linux is only free if your time is worthless!". I will keep the Windows on as a dual boot until I can get a CD. Thanks!
Glad I could help ^^

Solve : I do not have enough memory for installing McAfee?

Answer»

I have a Microsoft Windows XP, version 2002, service pack 1, amd athlon processor, 1.00 GHz, 128 MB of RAM. The only things at the moment being used to rid of spyware are spybot and yahoo antispy. I have ran a disk compression already which made the system faster but didnt help with memory. The CPU usage on my COMPUTER stays at a constant 5% I bought McAfee to place on the computer for virus protection. It is not allowing me to install it beause it says "your system does not have sufficient memory to run this application. Please refer to the product documentation for the minimum memory requirements." I have been told that I most likely have a virus that is taking up or eating memory, but this is why I am trying to install McAfee. I am incredibly ignorent when it comes to computers but I am the only one at my house capable learning how to fix it. Thank you and sorry 128MB of RAM is not enough to run Windows XP sufficiently. You need to install more RAM.

OK, I'll bite... What is the minimum memory requirement listed by the product documentation?---->LookHereThank you "street1". Of course I was hoping "Mallory0715" would answer because I (we) don't know which McAfee product and version they are attempting to run.

It appears Mallory NEEDS to either add more system memory or use security PRODUCTS which require less memory. There are a number of anti-malware products that are free and provide adequate protection for PERSONAL home use. I'd rather see them spend their money on hardware (e.g. memory) than on commercial anti-malware products. A good place to start would be here.

I also believe they should update to Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Solve : Compputer freezing, says the issue is with Visa....help!!?

Answer»

I just GOT a brand new $2000 computer for Christmas and it was working fine until a few days ago. I left it on over night, probably around 17 hours and when I got home from class that day it was frozen. I haven't been able to get it to work since then. I'll turn it on and get all the way in to log into my admin profile and then maybe get one program open, but after that the screen goes opaque (if i have a program running) and the mouse does the circle spinning thing. I am pretty good with computers so I think I can fix this myself (I really do not WANT to have to take it to CompUSA!!!). Is anyone else having this problem? Im also sometimes getting this error "Logon Process has failed to create the security options dialog" but not verytime I restart the computer. Like I said, it was working just fine before I left it on all of that time, so I have no idea whats up!! My roommate downloaded something a few days ago, but it was working fine even a dew days after that so I am not sure whats up. Please help!! You're still under Warranty...i would consider TAKING ADVANTAGE of that.Quote from: patio on March 21, 2008, 05:36:07 AM

You're still under Warranty...i would consider taking advantage of that.

If you try to fix it, and fail, or even just open the CASE, or reinstall the OS, and it still gives trouble, CompUSA could say the warranty is worthless. At least call their warranty helpline and let them talk you through their procedure.

hard drive is noisy, LIKE it's running a program or something is writing to it. all my programs are not responding even IE and FFox, no internet connection is found but i'm connectedIm running windows xp pro, sp2 and the latest IE version with cox cable internet. yesterday i noticed my computer was running sluggish so i ran an updated avg scan and finished with no problems REPORTED. The problem i'm having is today i can't open IE or Ffox, I tried to open them from my desktop, through my program files and explorer menu and all i get is an hour glass, no errors or anything, when i open my task menu I can see them running, and my control panel shows a connection of 100mbps. I contacted cox support and they said to call MS. any suggestions would be helpfull. I ran an updated ad aware also with BUGS reported and removed but no change with the browser problem.

You might be replacing this hard drive but don't panic yet.
BTW what version of Data Lifeguard Tools is this ? ?Sorry, this was not a brand new cable, i took it out of another working computer. I can't get a new cable till morning. I will get a new one and rerun the test. Thanks for your patients and help, i will re-post the results tomorrow.
AroplateNo problem at all...

P.S. I noticed you DLoaded the ver. that runs inside Windows...the bootable version is a bit more thorough and all thats needed is to have your burning softwarecreate the CD as bootable.ok, brand new IDE cable, installed, retested w/same results, how do i create bootable disc?Instructions on the DLG page depending on what burning program you have...

Actually what you may want to try at this point would be to hook it up as a slave drive in a working machine with a burner and see if you can access the drive/Data...
If so copy/burn what you need from there right away.

Solve : How can I make a HOT KEY??

Answer»

I am NOT technical at all. I was wondering if I could make a hot key for this reason...

I sell on Ebay and would like to send each buyer a thank you email after they pay. Instead of having to type the same thing (Thank you for your puchase etc.) over & over, I figure maybe someone can tell me how I can EASILY create a Hot Key.

MANY THANKS

DeniseNot sure how much trouble you might have with this, but you could try using AutoHotKey.

Of course, you could always create a canned SPEECH. Just type out your message, save it to a Notepad file, and copy and paste it whenever you need it.Thanks Chris but....

Does anyone have anything easier??? I have no clue how to do it from the link 'CBMATT' provided. Might anyone have a simple step by step method? (Oh, and free without having to download anything. My PC is very low on memory)

Thanks for all help given. APPRECIATED!!

DeniseCould you not just save the email letter to a .txt file using Notepad and then copy & paste the letter into the email? Ummm, with the amount of sales I SOMETIMES have in a day, I think it would be easier to just hit a key and 'viola! I am really not technical at all and to have to go and retrieve it will take me time.

Is making a hot key that hard? I was wanting to do a few different ones and thought it was a great idea.

Anyone?I tried to make hot keys once, and met with terrible failure.

Ok, enough with the joking...

What email program are you using (Outlook, etc.)? Or are you using some form of webmail (Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc.)?I have internet explorer and I pay for AOL mail. (Windows XP)

Hope that helps. THANKS!!!!!!!!!I'm not familiar with AOL mail, so I'll give you an example with Outlook.

When composing a mail in Outlook, you can actually save the mail as a file before sending it. Then any time you want to send that particular mail, you can open the file, enter the e-mail address, and send.

I'll dig around and see if there's a way to do this or something similar with AOL mail.I just figured it would easier to hit the REPLY button in my mail and click onthe HOT KEY and my message of choice would APPEAR. I would hit SEND and I am done. Is it not that easy once the hot key is made??

Dee

Not without installing something extra, like the software in the link mentioned by CBMatt. The three simplest options have been mentioned. Take your pick:

1. Install hot-key/macro software to do the typing for you.
2. Copy and paste from a file.
3. Use a saved/draft e-mail.Got ya!!! I think I will write the email to myself and save it. Then I can bring it up and re-enter their email. I guess I always think there are newer easier ways that I am unfamiliar with.

Thanks so much everyone!!

DeniseUnfortunately, there's a bit of a trade-off here. Using a hot key macro is easy. Making it is a bit harder.

There is another alternative that is much easier and would probably be better for you, but sadly, I can't remember the NAME of the program and I currently don't have access to my computer. But when I can get access to it, I'll be sure to LET you know what the program is.

Not sure what you want to accomplish with this; effectively you "WIPED out" the whole computer when you attempted to re-install the recovery disks. If you want to SECURELY delete the contents of the harddrive, look here: http://dban.sourceforge.net/.

Presumably you want to recover the use of the CD drive, toward that end, I'm confused here:
Quote from: Zelenia on July 17, 2008, 11:04:04 AM
Okay, so something is definitely wrong with the CD drive. My boyfriend did something to it to make it show an exclamation point next to the missing hardware in the boot order list in Setup. The laptop doesn't have a floppy drive, so obviously that had a "!"...but, it said there was no CD drive, either.

Sounds like you are referring to the Boot Order SCREEN in the BIOS. Refer to the first BIOS screen, is the CD drive SHOWN there? Is the harddrive? In other words, are the CD and harddrive detected by the BIOS?

If the CD is not detected by the BIOS, I would remove the CD drive and re-install it and see if the BIOS detects it. If not, I would replace the CD drive.

Once you have a working CD drive, it's back to installing the operating system. You said that you have recovery disks. Did you ever go to the HP website and DETERMINE what recovery disks you have and how to use them? I would do that, if you haven't, and then follow the directions to recover the OS.

When re-installing or doing any CRITICAL task, I suggest that you have the computer plugged in.

Please let us know how you make out!

Solve : Blank Desktop??

Answer»

When I turn on my computer, everything loads right as normal. Then when the computer finally loads up to the desktop part, my background shows, but my desktop doesn't. I don't even see the "Start bar." I can still run programs, when I do Ctrl+Alt+Delete then I click on New Task. I then click on browse to run a PROGRAM. This is a pain in the *censored*, if I don't use the desktop or "start up bar"Seems as though explorer isn't starting.

Bring up the task MANAGER and click new task, and type in explorer. That'll bring back your desktop until it next restarts. A CHEAP work-around for your problem might be to put explorer.exe in your startup folder. What was the last thing that happened before this happened?
(Eg: installing TWO antivirus scanners at once)

After typing Explorer.exe in the run box, like Anodoin SAID, go to:
Start> Accessories> System Tools> "System Restore"
Restore your computer back to the point BEFORE The issue occurred.

Do you have Antivirus installed? Explorer explorer where are you my explorer Doesn't anyone else think this might be a virus, because it's happening to me too!

Solve : BIOS flashing?

Answer»

does anyone know how, if so i want to update my BIOS for my tablet and would appreciate some instruction and if you know things i can do to help lessen the chances of screwing up and ENDING up with a no good motherboardWhat is the make and model?

To be honest, a BIOS update isn't necessary unless you're having problems. The saying "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" really fits here.Take your pick from this lot..

i downloaded the NEWEST version of the BIOS from the MFG website and have it saved to a USB drive and can be put on floppy or whatever i need. i'm not having any problems but the system is 2nd hand and has a BIOS password that i never got from the last ownerForum rules rightly prevent any discussion on the removal of security measures regardless of circumstances.

You should approach the distributor with proof of ownership, they may be able to assist you.

Good luck.well i got it from a kid i was in school with and it was on his dads credit card and they wont give me any help unless i can provide the card number, plus they said that flashing was the only option other than having the BIOS chip replaced witch is expenciveQuote from: lilnate1191 on July 17, 2008, 01:18:30 AM

well i got it from a kid i was in school with and it was on his dads credit card and they wont give me any help unless i can provide the card number, plus they said that flashing was the only option other than having the BIOS chip replaced witch is expencive

You won't get ANY help here.

IF the story is true, if the kid is a minor, then the machine may well be his father's property legally. ANYWAY, how come he doesn't know the password? Somethings smells funny here.

If anyone is buying a piece of computer equipment, they will be stupid to pay money unless they see proof of ownership and also proof that the *censored* thing works. In the case of a device with passwords, that will mean seeing it demonstrated fully that all and any passwords are SUPPLIED and working properly.

If anyone offers to swap or give you such an item, they may be giving you a useless piece of junk, and possibly a police record.

Yep, the only advice we can give you is to ASK the original owner for his password. We're not accusing you of doing anything wrong, but it's impossible for us to tell who's being honest in this situation and who isn't.

Then either you'll have to get the password from him, or ask his father for assistance with the manufacturer.i see, so no help with flashing then because of the password thingReflashing the BIOS may not actually reset the password. In many cases the password information is held on a separate chip soldered directly on the motherboard.

I don't understand:

1. Why the person who you got the device from, didn't give you the password.
2. Why you don't ask them.

Solve : read call waiting-dna?

Windows xp, just had COMPUTER redone after lightning fried it TWICE through phone line and surge protectors-but although I have call waiting, meaning another call comes in, if I aon ONLINE like now, it INTERRUPTS and disconnects me-that's why I have call waiting so this doesn't HAPPEN.

Whjen I access control panel, to phone and modem, get to call waiting area, for windows xp home, what do I insert as again, I do NOT want to be disconnected-this is maddening!

Your wordage here applies to lesser windows and says 70 or whatever-I want folks calling to be able to leave message and NOT disconnect me

I don't think that this is possible. If you disable call waiting with *70, I believe that callers will get a busy signal - but, you will not be disconnected.
Do they offer DSL internet SERVICE in your area ? ?

Solve : Yet another problem. USB ports aren't working...?

Answer»

This is, I think, the third problem I've POSTED about here in a month. -.-

Everything was running fine on my computer earlier today and then my MOUSE started freaking out. It would turn on and off and eventually, STOPPED working altogether. I tried plugging it into every other USB port and it's not working. I also tried using an ADAPTER to plug it into the actual mouse port and it's not responding to that, either. The laser thing on the mouse was working when plugged in, but it still wouldn't respond on the screen.

I need more help. v.v I break everything I touch. >.<

Edit: I just tried a system restore, in case it was something software-related and it's still not working...If you've posted here before, you will know that We need more information, Please look here.

Also, does this HAPPEN in Safe ModeIt's a custom computer. Gigabyte motherboard, intel pentium processor, 3 gigs of ram...what other stuff do you need?Quote

Also, does this happen in Safe Mode

What Operating System you are using will be helpful too.Did you try another mouse?I'm using XP.

And actually, I think it IS the mouse. I plugged in my ipod and it worked. The only thing is, I tried another mouse before that and that didn't work, either...so, I'm guessing I just have two screwed up mice. I'm planning on picking up a new one today. We'll see if that works. ^.^
