Solve : HELP! Before I throw my Hard Drive at the wall! BLUE SCREEN+REAL REAL SLOW! ARGH?

Answer»

Hi.
I am running Windows XP Pro SP3, 1.7 GHZ, 256mb RAM. Very cheap COMPUTER! But, as I am only a student and have very big finantial issues. I am planning to upgrade in about 4 Months.
It takes me 5 minutes to open basically every window! I have run CCleaner, deFrag, AVG, and it is still slow! I have a program called RAM booster. I don't know if it is okay for my computer... It is ment to INCREASE speed, but only uses most of my MEMORY usage it starts from 3,000k and increases to 100,000k!!!
Oh and the blue SCREEN usually appears in the 3 times that I try to start the computer! Then it pops up after 30 mins of usage. Then it should be okay after I reboot again.I would add some RAM...
And run your maintenence such as diskclean and defrag....and get rid of RAM booster.

Solve : You can re insstall XP on a Dell even if you lost the CD.?

Answer»

You can re insstall XP on a Dell even if you lost the CD.
Without breaking the intent of the law.
Dell and some other manufacturers have been shipping Desltpps and Laptops with XP installed, but no CD for repair of an badly damaged system.
The photo below is from a vendor on eBay who sells this for the express purpose of doing repair work on a Dell computer that has a legal, but damaged XP system on it.
Click to see the IMAGE of the Dell recovery CD for CP sp3
http://headservices.net/ebay/items/xpsp3/xpprosp3.JPG
The price is about the same. as from Dell.
The eBay people are well AWARE of this. It is not pirate software.
http://reviews.ebay.com/Using-a-Dell-Recovery-CD-to-Install-Windows-XP_W0QQugidZ10000000002153942QQ_trksidZp4295.c0.m328

I put this here as reference so I would not have to say this again.
The moderator can edit, delete or do whatever with this.

Its just a media CD and if you have a valid CD Key then it should be fully legalYes I use this type of media all the time at my work. This type of media comes with all shipped Dell systems all the time. U don't even need a key for this type of reinstall as long as it is a Dell. Check to see if u r STILL under warranty with Dell and they will ship u a free set including application CD. I do not KNOW the price on ebay. U can also purchase a set from Dell for about $15 (US). Write back and let us know?

Solve : An odd problem: user account that appears in safe mode only?

Answer»

So a few years ago when my laptop was new and I was foolish enough to think Norton was enough to SAVE me from viruses and hackers, I went on a downloading binge (movies, music, games etc). Sure enough something did come and bite me in the arse but surprisingly not a virus...I had left my laptop on standby overnight and when I woke up I was shocked to find that the user account I frequently used had disappeared from the blue login screen. At the time I'd been more baffled than worried and instead of trying to find where that account had disappeared off too, I created a new one, paid for a good anti-virus that my computer savvy cousin recommended me, set up a firewall, and etc.

I never gave much though to that lost account again until recently when an ATTACHED document gave me a couple of nasty trojan viruses that I couldn't find scanning using XP's regular mode. I restarted under Safe Mode and when the blue login screen opened up, I was surprised to see my long lost user account.

Anyways I eventually got rid of the Trojans and was able to access the lost user account in safe mode...however I still cannot see the lost user account on regular mode. I just don't understand how this happened or and I don't know what to do about it.

Please HELP!
Sounds like you have had this windows install a long time and it has taken allot of abuse. Remnants of the Trojans may still be effecting the system. Removal of these things can also do damage to windows. I will suggest starting over with a clean install with reformat or TOTAL restore with the CD's if you have them.

You will be pleased with a new fresh install is my advice or you can spend countless HOURS trying to put band-aid fixes on it and still have ongoing problems.

Solve : Power hook up.?

Answer»

Hello.
I'm having a real problem (not unusual) Recently I loaded a stripped down version of window XP pro onto my daughters computer. The O/S was Win 2000 pro & I thought that since it was an old system, that it was TIME for a upgrade. I wiped her system with Boot Nuke and then installed the Tiny XP.
Things seemed to be ok for about a day then she found she couldn't ACCESS the net, I checked out the BIOS to make sure the boot sequence started form the CD rom and then tried to reload it.

Long story short, all it does now is do the "Verifying DMI pool data then goes to needing the system disk to boot.

I checked inside the computer itself & noted that the power cables that say Master & Slave were unplugged.
My question is: How do I know which to hook up to what?

I know, I know, I shouldn't have tried to use that stripped down XP, but it worked good on mine, so I don't know why it didn't work on hers.

Any suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I assume the power cable was from the HDD. Check the HDD if should have a detail label show a jumper setting has to which is master and slave. The cables should be IDE, connect the HDD to the closes connector (the first) if it as two connector on the IDE cable. Lastly u can always go the HDD website and it should tell u all the infor to the HDD.Thank you for the responce, I'll check that out.
lol expect to hear form me again
Dweebster57, a few points:

I don't know how you got your "stripped down" Windows XP, but it may not have been legal. This site operates a strict "no help for piracy or breaking MS license terms" policy, so unfortunately you are on your own in that regard.

Quote from a moderator at the EeeUser forum:

Quote

Tiny XP is illegal. Any further DISCUSSION of it will get this thread locked and people advocating it may be banned.

However, ignoring the OS for the moment... (Others will decide on this)

If you were able to use Boot Nuke to wipe the OS on your daughter's computer, then at least one HDD was installed and working.

If you were able to load the "stripped down" Windows XP, then the same applied.

If things were alright for about a day and your daughter was able to surf the web then likewise.

So your daughter found she could not surf the web. That MADE you decide to reinstall the OS from CD? Why?

Anyhow, the BIT that confuses me is where you say "power cables that say Master and Slave". The power cables for IDE hard drives end in 4 pin white Molex connectors that look like this

It does not matter which one goes on which drive. Do you mean they have "Master" and "Slave" written on them? I have never seen this before.

But the big riddle for me is that your badass pirate Windows may be capable of many things, but it definitely cannot unplug cables overnight! Either somebody has opened the case and disconnected some cables, or else you are confused about what is what.

Solve : wiki.dll error?

Answer»

hi i am having problems with my computer agai9nj and it needs to be fixes asap cus the LAST time this happend after about a week the computer would not TURN back on
it keeps on comming up with a bad image error about a file (WIKI.DLL) now ive tryed going on run and typing SFC /scannow and scanning the computer and that did not work i tryed regcure and i tryed ccleaner (formaly known as crap cleaner) and i cant FIND anything else to do plz i need help the bad image error comes up on every program that tryes to laungce even befor i log on
plz help me tnanks
ive opend up the file and all it has on it are a couple of numbers (10 to be right)You MAY have a malware/virus infection. Some malware camouflage themselves as wiki.dll, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. You may want to do a virus scan with your anti virus program and post again in the malware section.

Solve : my computer needs a dll file but i don't know how to install it.?

Answer»

my desktop got a nasty virus posing as an antivirus. all it would do is open windows and kill the system TRIED to restore the computer with the disc provided by emachines. it made it worst now all it does is startup shut down over and over. when i try to start it up in safe mode it says i'm missing the dll file below.

windows root\system32\hal.dll

i tried to call the manufactures but the warranty is up and now im stuck.
is there any one that can help.

my specs are below

my computer is:
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Processor
1G PC2700 DDR Memory
160GB 7,200rpm Hard Drive
8x DVD+/-R Multiformat Optical Drive
nForce2 Audio (AC'97) and Stereo Speakers
nVidia GeForce 4MX Integrated Graphics with 64MB Shared Memory
v.92 56Kbps Modem and 10/100 Ethernet
Five USB 2.0 Ports and 8-in-1 Media Card Reader
Windows XP Home, MS Works 7, Money 2004, Nero 6 Suite, PowerDVD and Norton Anti-Virus
thats all there is to it find the missing file, unzip, then move it to c:/system32/ it seems that its just in the root of it. The FILES in it would be subdirectories.hal.dll error is not that easily solvable: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/missinghaldll.htmIf u have a Win XP CD boot from it and do like if u were going to install. Do not USE THE REFORMAT COMMAND. Follow the INSTRUCTION and u will come to a fix this install. Choose this option and it run. This will fix all your dll problems, back and let us know what happen.if you have upgrade cd of xp, you can upgrade in place, which means upgrading with same version of windows and it should repair your xp system files. Solve : Problem! Please help?!?

Answer» K. Will do! I had no clue. When I get the space free, will the problem be corrected on the .jpg files or have they been damaged for good?I don't think, you caused any damages by running your computer with low disk space, and your problems may have some other causes, but we have to start with making your hard drive operable, first. Then, we'll see what's going on.ok. It took some work and alot of deleting, but I now have 14.3GB free disk space. What should I do now? Defragment?
First...
Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner.
Then, defrag.alright, finally got it done. Took a long time to defrag. What next?is there anything else i can do to FIX the .jpg files? Are they showing in Windows Explorer ? ?
If so right click one and select Open With and then choose your image viewing program from the drop down list...I just tried again, and I cannot opn the pictures in any program. all say Preview unavailable. How are these photos being listed in Explorer ? ?
What programs have you tried to open them with ? ?
Sorry for all the questions but they are necessary to understand what's happening...
You may need to repair the thumbnail cache which would involve editing your Registry...is this something you would be comfortable doing yourself ? ?So Sorry for the delay in getting back to you Patio. Been crazy here. Ok, to answer your questions,
In IE the pics just show a little red X.
My Pictures Folder, click on the thumbnail, says "No Preview Available"
Windows picture and fax viewer, "No Preview Available"
Sony Picture Motion Browser, (came with my camera) all grey X
Microsoft Office Picture manager, Red X
Jasc Paint Shop, the specified file cannot be identified as a supported type
Adobe Photoshop elements, Could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short(the file may be truncated or incomplete)
Microsoft Paint, Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported.
HP Photoshop Premier, No preview or X, just blank
Kodak Easyshare Software, Cannot read the file. The file exists, but may be damaged.

I think I have tried every program I have... this started with just a few files in one folder. Now it is affecting some entire files and only parts of others. All are .jpg/.jpeg . I have cleaned up(deleted unneeded files, uninstalled programs I dont need or use), and defraged and run CCleaner. I cannot tell you when this all started. I installed SP3 about the same time I was making backup discs of all my pictures, so who knows what started it... Thank you so much for your help. I am lost and these are precious pictures of our kids, one a new baby. I cannot tell you how much i appreciate your guys help!
Not sure if the files have been damaged or moved or other...
Go to Start/Search and type in *.jpg and hit Enter...
Give it time to load it may take awhile.
You will now have a list of all .jpg's on your machine.
Right click one of them and see if you can open it with the image viewer of your choice.

Repeat the procedure for *.jpeg.

Unfortunately this will be a tedious process to check them all but move the ones you need to the folder of choice and then you can organise them accordingly and burn them to CD/DVD

Best of Luckok, I have the good .jpg and .jpeg files SAVED. The ones that would not open before are still not. I am wanting to make sure that this problem does not continue to new files. Is there a way to ensure the future files are okay to transfer to my laptop, then to CD without them messing up too?

Also, do you think the damaged files are recoverable?
Well we're getting somewhere at least...
In a recent post someone had success with a Photo recovery program from Easus.
Here is the Link.

Check to see because i believe they had a 30 day Trial.
I don't normally recommend buying software until you have tried it out.

But as a side note i have used a few other PRODUCTS they have...
Good Luck !

As far as preventing it in future...
Keep your hard drive organised and clutter free.
If you install a new app and don't LIKE it get rid of it immediately.
Know where everything is on your drive. Get in to the habit of creating and maintaining your own folders instead of letting apps decide where stuff should land.
Do your regular maintenence such as disk cleanup and defrag on a schedule.
And last but not least ...Backup your important data regularly.

Solve : renaming a photo?

Answer»

Since my computer crashed 3 months ago, I cannot change the name of my photos on windows "My Pictures". Used to be easy but now shows this message:
"If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable.
Are you sure you want to change it"
Sure ENOUGH, it becomes unusable.
I am running XP Pro and have Webshots as my default system for downloading from my camera to My pictures" . It's the easiest way.

How can I correct this problem???It says that same thing on mine xp home what you have to do is rename the file but KEEP the same file extension jpg bmp or whatever it is cause otherwise it will not work To avoid this in future, open a folder, click Tools - Folder OPTIONS, View, and CHECK the box to hide file extensions for known file types.

Hope this helps. Thanks Calum! WORKED great! Hope you have a SUPER day! BechapYou're welcome, glad I could help you out.

Solve : error when i try to install a game. need help.?

Answer»

iam running Microsoft window home edition and iam trying to install a game i have called " independence war" made by ocean in 1998, the game would run on my older windown 98 computer. when i try to install i get a error pop up saying
" C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/AUTOEXEC.NT.
This system file is not suitable for running ms-dos, and windows aplications."

i can click on two buttons " Ignore, cancel" but no matter wich one i click on it just stope the instalation.

Does anyone have any IDEA on how i can fix this thank you in advance.I think I replied to your message on another forum..... If you click on the link below, it could fix your problem, but I haven't tried ot myself.... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

[glb]Flame[/glb]You could try this. Right-click its icon and go to compatability. Try a variety of different modes. If that doesn't work, try what Flame said. Is this a DOS game?I agree with Neil.... Check the compatibility. MAYBE if you give us some of your system specs, we could help just a BIT more.....

[glb]Flame[/glb]I kinda play this game myself...well used to..
This game has tons of problems but alot of the problems get solved in the forum of the game..if that doesnt work u can check out the website
http://www.i-war2.com/forum/default.aspFeel free to give us your ystem specs. at any time now..... lol

[glb]Flame[/glb]Is it a DOS game?No the game is not a dos game, and i dunno why it could give him an error like that, but again, the game is full of bugs as i play it and i have problems with it CONSTANTLY.
Its a great game man, but want my suggestion? return the game, and buy X2-The Threat or The new space simulation called something jupitor incident
I believe u r into space simulations so u can go to the store u bought IW2 from and ask him for suggestions but i persoanlly like X2, and space rangers.

The problem ur having might not even be a faulty thing in UR pc, it could be the game itself
When you get an answer, I'd sure like to know. I have a problem using existing software or trying to install new XP compatable software after installing XP2
and I've spent an entire month troubleshooting w/ Dell support with no results. I've been through all of the microsoft "fixes" like expanding config.nt, autoexec.nt and command.com. Nothing helps. I even tried UNINSTALLING XP2 service pack and even that did not work. I don't see any comments I have not yet tried here. I'd like to find a fix without completly reinstalling XP from scratch and loosing all my files in the process.
BechapHaving the same trouble as you. :-/ Unable to load anything under the 16bit sub system> I've tryied the fix at microsoft and it doesn't work. Please let me know if you come up with a solution to this problem.
Scottsee if there are any patches on the makers website...or use a ps2 box..... See Calum's reply. It worked for me. bechapThis is a 4 Year old Topic....

Solve : Internet randomly disconnects?

Answer»

Since the folks here are very nice and helpful I thought I would ask for help with another problem. (Thanks again Carbon Dudeoxide )

A while back I had a problem with my internet disconnecting. I installed Zone Alarm a few months ago and the problem seemed to be fixed for a while. But since about a week ago it's been happening again. I really have no idea what could cause this or what I can do to fix the problem. All I can think of is that when it disconnects and I try to go to a webpage it'll show megaclick.com at the bottom of the browser but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. I've RUN spybot seek & destroy, adaware and NOD32 antivirus but nothing came up. When it disconnects my modem still shows as connected but no web pages or anything online will work. I have to restart my computer and then it's fine again. I'm using a cable modem and firefox. I REALIZE that isn't much to go on so I'll post any info about my computer or internet if needed.

Google megaclick.com and read up about it.

The tech name for it is a browser hijack. There is a program called "Hijack this" that was built to find and kill them, but it's not the most straight-forward program out there. It's pretty labour intensive and requires a bit of knowledge about windows inner workings.

Before I found Hijack this I usually googled the problem and 9 times out of 10 found a safe manual way to defeat it. Personally I know nothing about the exe program you named above but would caution you about using it with little info about it. It is not unheard of for hackers to use this type of tactic to get you to download and execute a more vicious virus.

Picture a GUY who sends out a pasky browser hijack and then writes a virus exe program that claims to kill it, knowing full well that you'll google it and having the knowledge to place his download page at the top of googles search results.

Be careful.

Google megaclick.com and read up about it.
Wether this is the reason for drop outs I'm not sure. May be two different issues.hiloed, thank you. I did google for megaclick.com but saw conflicting opinions on whether or not it was some type of virus or adware. I found this topic

http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-86178-megaclick.html

Do you think it's safe to do what's suggested in one the posts?

Run HJT with no other programmes open(except notepad). Click the SCAN button. Have HJT fix the following, by placing a tick in the little box next to(if there).

O9 - Extra button: Poker.com - {6FDD5236-C9F0-49ef-935D-385F5E21991A} - C:\Archivos de programa\Poker.com\poker.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

O16 - DPF: {AED98630-0251-4E83-917D-43A23D66D507} (Download HELPER Class) - http://activex.microgaming.com/DLhelper/version7/dlhelper.cab

Click on the fix checked button.

Close HJT and reboot your system.

Other than the above, your log files are clean.

Turn off system restore.(XP/ME only) See how HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html).

Now, turn system restore back on. This will have deleted all your old restore points and any nasties that are in them. It will also have created a new, clean restore point.

Solve : Remote desktop connection, hidden file. Can someone please help??

Answer»

I really appreciate any HELP or peace of mind concerning this. I look in my "My Documents" folder just now and see a hidden FILE called "Default." It's a remote desktop connection file. I've never used this service and have long ago done all the usual steps of disabling Remote Connection (such as disabling remote desktop and remote connection in Control Panel > System > Remote). Right click > Properties SAYS it was created 11/16/2008. I have no idea why this file would just show up in My Documents. I'm not a paranoid person but this type of thing does worry me. Is there a simple explanation for this file appearing after "Show Hidden Files" and I should stop worrying? If more info about my computer or the file is needed, please LET me know. Again, very much appreciate any advice or expertise.

I have Show Hidden Files turned on, and I see it in My Documents too.
My other three computers has the file too. I don't think it's anything to worry about.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on November 21, 2008, 01:55:01 AM

Carbon Dudeoxide, thank you so much. After seeing your post I also did a google search about this problem-on second thought I probably should've done that in the first place-and saw that it's very common as you said. THANK YOU!

Solve : XP will not shut down or restart?

Answer»

I am having a problem with my computer it an XP it won't SHUT down or restart. Any SUGGESTIONS on what to do? Now I have another problem on my XP I downloaded service pack 2 from microsoft it rebooted and now it just keeps rebooting it's missing winsrv that's what it said when I disabled automatic reboot. You shouldn't install any service packs, if computer is not working correctly.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will FIND any errors, it'll ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
The computer will not BOOT all the way. It keeps shutting down when I disable automatic shut down it says missing winsrv. The computer didn't come with a CD.Did you try to boot to Safe Mode?Yeah I tried that. My friend has a DISK that I can borrow next week so I'm probably going to wait on that.

Thanks for your helpNo problem

Solve : Windows XP Themes?

Answer»

I've seen people customize their Windows XP to look WAY cooler, does anyone know any sites that I can download themes from? (Eg. change the colour of the explorer bar from blue or silver to black or red)There are variants of the LUNA theme ALREADY built in to the Display Properties - red, silver, green I think.

I am using the ZUNE theme which has a black task bar and orange start button

go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=75078

Or there is the Royale theme

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Themes/Royale-Theme-for-WinXP.shtml

Other themes

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/desktop/default.mspx

Or SEE here

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&num=100&q=xp+themes&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=

For non official Microsoft themes you have to hack certain system files like uxtheme.dll

customize.org is a good site

Solve : Boot Partition Deleted?

Answer»

On my dual boot computer, I deleted the LINUX boot partition which had the bootloader - grub. Is there any way to move the boot flag to the Windows partition without ANY bootable CD.Have you tried running fixboot and fixmbr from the Recovery CONSOLE ?
How do I do that?Boot to the XP CD....at the prompt follow the steps to enter the Recovery Console....
Let it load...sometimes slow.
At the command prompt type fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the XP CD and re-boot....
If no joy joy repeat the above EXCEPT this time at the prompt type fixmbr and hit Enter...
Again remove the XP CD and re-boot.
If you have a flash drive or bootable cd is all I think will work.Ya cant expect me to have the windows cd and stuff here at holidays. Lol No way without the disc?Nope.Thx anywaysI forgot this was in my bag of TRICKS:::
Bootable RC .iso
Here
You use it in your burning app to make a bootable CDNow this makes the situation impossible-the only comp here, sits unbootable. I contact you by WAP enabled mobile phone. You have friends with computers...right?

Solve : missing os or unformatted active partition?

Answer»

I have a gateway notebook running windows xp & when I boot up it says 'missing os or unformatted active partition'. What do I need to do to get it fixed? I'm not very computer savvy & prob. need step by step instr. Please help, thanks!
Do you have restore Cd's or a Windows install CD that come with the laptop?

Please check your manual that CAME with the laptop to see if it has a restore function command built in?

please also post the exact model of the gateway laptop? it may be on a sticker located on the bottom of the laptop.I don't have the restore cd's, & don't believe there is a restore function command either. The model is 7330GZ (I know, pretty old!) Thanks for your help.Quote

when I boot up it says 'missing os or unformatted active partition'.
...and what happens?well it only runs XP due to DRIVER availability ...got a windows XP install disk?

see if this works:

1# Restart the computer.

2# As the computer restarts, begin pressing the F8 key after the Gateway BIOS logo appears until the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen appears.

3# On the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and then press the ENTER key.

4# On the Please select the operating system to start screen, select the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, and then press ENTER.

5# At the login screen, LOG on as the administrator or a user who has administrator rights.

6# At the command prompt, type: c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe. Press ENTER.

Note: If Windows has not been reinstalled, the folder is c:\winnt\system32\restore\rstrui.exe.

7# The graphical user interface (GUI)-based System Restore utility is launched. Follow the instructions on the screen to begin restoring your computer to a previous, functional state. No, I don't. After that msg, it says 'press any key to boot floppy'. I read that there is a way to download windows xp setup discs, but its only recommended if the cd/rom drive is not WORKING- which it is because I can run fix it utilities.will let you know how that fares out shortly, thanks.
Didn't work, after pressing F8 I still get the 'missing os...' msg & then a msg 'Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device & press a key'?
I will ask again if you have a windows xp install cd?

thats the boot cd it needsNope. So that's what I'm going to have to OBTAIN in order to fix it, huh?yepThanks for all your help!

Solve : DISTRESS CALL! Desktop Icons deleted accidentally!?

Answer»

I started the Optus Wireless Broadband software as usually, which is normally just hitting Connect and surfing the web. UNFORTUNATELY... my fingers slipped into the right position so I all I needed to press and it would give me the option to delete the files without sending them to the recycle bin (SHIFT + DEL), which my clumsy fingers did. Without thinking I just clicked 'Yes' and now they're gone. Is there any way I fix this WITHOUT adding them one-by-one? Some of the programs I rarely use so I forgot most of them.

THANKS in advance.I think System Restore can bring back the icons, but I doubt it.

If you've Shift + Deleted them, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do.

Trust me, I've had experience. *censored*, okay, thanks Carbon. I'll TRY to go through my memory files.

Thanks again.

Solve : Resolution too small.?

Answer»

I have a laptop, i dont know what brand or anything like that. But one day when i started it up the resolution was MUCH too large, so i changed it but i didnt know i made it as small as it would go. now everytime i start it up, my screensaver is very small, and it shows the windows are open, but they go off the screen so i cannot SEE them. Is there a solution to this problem? I am on safe mode at the moment, is it alright to use safe mode on a regular basis?Boot into normal mode. Right-click the desktop, and select properties.

If you cannot see the display dialog after this, press Alt-Spacebar and then M. Then use the keyboard arrow keys to move the window until it becomes VISIBLE- and press enter.

Once you've DONE so, select the settings tab. Then you can change your resolution using the provided slider.

Solve : unable to save as jpeg, jpg, gif in paint?

Answer»

My computer is a dell gx60with Windows 2000 PRO SP4 and Microsoft Office 2003 Pro. I have no option to SAVE AS jpeg, jpg, gif formats in Ms Paint. I have done a FULL install of Windows 2000 Pro, and FULL install of Microsoft Office 2003 Pro.

The only SAVE AS options that I get in Ms Paint are BitMap formats.

On another computer that I have, I installed the same Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro, and Microsoft Office 2000 Pro, and I get all the options: BitMap, Jpeg, Jpg, GIF and some other options too.

Can someone please help me? I really would like to keep the Office 2003 Pro.

Is it possible that with Office 2003, the Jpeg, Jpg, Gif options are not available?

[email removed to prevent spam]Well - this is not a solution, just an option. I am not sure why you are not getting the choices for save format, have to say.

If you have or get Irfanview - a freebie and very useful even as a viewer - you could open a saved BMP in that and save then to what you want - delete BMP after use if so desired. Roundabout method but maybe useful for now.

www.irfanview.com

Be on LOOKOUT for the Google bar option during install and UNCHECK it if you do not want it. The install itself is very light with minimal registry writes. The plugins pack option too is handy.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299953

That link talks of Windows XP and not Windows 2000, though.

So I wonder if that suggestion applies in my case. You could try Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
This launches System File Checker which will repair/replace any corrupt Windows files.
Have your Win2K CD handy...it will ask for it.
When it finishes remove the CD and re-boot.
This may or may not fix it but it won't do any harm...Normally after a fresh install the "Save as .jpeg .jpg option is NOT available in MSpaint until you open Paint and import one .jpg image/photo...then the "Save as .jpg, jpeg option appears and is always available. So perhaps you should try that?

Or look here?

Hmm, that's hard to believe but I'll take your word for it. What file format options does Paint show without that initiation procedure? What is Paint's initial default format for saving files?BMP format is the default.

See here

I see this is related to having MS Office installed. I've had Office so long I guess I completely forgot that Paint does not support .jpg except unless induced by other means.

Solve : CAN AN ETHERNET CONNECTION SAVE INFORMATION??

Answer»

I recently CONNECTED my laptop to an ETHERNET connection at a hotel... when I want to login to Facebook there was someone else's username that appeared.. Can an ethernet connection store someone else's login or has someone been using my laptop at the office??? I did not recognize the username..

ThanksIt sounds to me like some one else has been using your comp.Quote

Can an ethernet connection store someone else's login
Can what store what where?Maybe not store, but somehow remember my login id... After I connected to the ethernet at the hotel... I went to Facebook's home page... and someone else's email address was in the username... was that the last person connected to the ethernet? Is that POSSIBLE? Can it remember email addresses? My laptop was not used for months... so I do not know why there was a STRANGE email address that appeared..

Thanks First, I believe you mean Internet.

Second, yes it can remember username/email fields.

Third, if the computer was not used for months, the last person who used it must have logged into facebook and got the computer to remember it.Sorry I meant connecting to the internet using an ethernet connection. I did not know if security can be compromised using the connection at a hotel room. So a computer can only remember username/email fields and not a connection? Say for example, I hook up my laptop to the internet and type in my email and password and LOG in.
Then I disconnect and another laptop comes in and connects to the same network. They cannot see what I just did.

It doesn't work that way.

Solve : Multi-core processors and 32-bit operating systems.?

Answer»

Hi,
I have recently come into the possession (at work, anyway) of a PC with triple-core processor. The spec tells me that the processor is 2.4 GHz but the systems property box tells me that it is only running at 1.15GHz.

Somebody TOLD me that the 32-bit xp PRO operating system I'm using does not see anything beyond two cores. He said that it USES all three (or four in the case of quad cores) cores but it cannot interrogate them for the systems property box details.

What's the logic behind this and is it true?

Thanks DLoad CPU-Z to see how the CPU is reported....
Your friend's info is innaccurate...since NT windows has supported multiple cores regardless of whether it's 32 or 64bit.Yep!

CPU-Z says 1155.4 MHz.

My "friend" was actually someone I rang up on the HP helpdesk.

I felt a little uneasy about his answer, so I decided to google the problem. I found nothing. So I thought I'd ask you guys.

Maybe I miss heard him.

It correctly identifies the processor as an "AMD Phenom(tm) 8600B Triple-Core Processor".

By the way, The BIOS identifies it as a 2.4GHz processor. I'm confused!

Have you looked in your BIOS screens for settings related to CPU speed and memory speed? Some incorrect setting there MAY be throttling back your speed. You might also try setting BIOS settings to default.

Solve : Resize cells in Excel?

Answer»

Hi Everybody

I am working on a spread sheet in Microsoft Excel 2003. COLUMN A the cell is to small to TYPE the information “computer information” so I went to Format, Cells and then to wrap so “computer information is now in one cell. Now the cells B contains dates and.C will contain numbers only and there is no need to wrap any information.

Now I would like to sort this information by date. I then hilite all the information go to Data, Sort by column B. I get this message:

THIS OPERATION REQUIRES THE MERGED CELLS TO BE IDENTICALLY SIZED

Since Column A is larger the REST of the columns. How can I sort the information??

Thank you

This is not a windows issue. please try to post in the correct heading in the future. What this is indicating is that somewhere in your sheet you've merged two or more cells into one and has nothing to do with the width of column A. In order to be sorted, merged cells must be identical in ALIGNMENT (for example, you can't sort if there is a merged cell in columns A & B and B & C in different rows) and identical in size.Quote from: LOSTCOAST on April 26, 2009, 08:26:33 PM

Solve : OEM XP Pro CD doesnt work with Compaq XP Pro Case Key?

Answer» RAN into this issue yesterday where I had a Compaq given to me with a blown motherboard. I replaced the motherboard and installed Windows XP Pro SP2 from OEM CD, and when trying to USE the XP Pro Key on the case to use the copy of Windows XP licensed for that box it said invalid key, but I verified that I typed it all correctly.

I didnt want to install a second copy of that OEM CD onto another box and run both with the same key.

I ended up calling MS and activating the Windows XP Pro over the phone.

Only problem there is that I believe that I am still running off of the key activation from that OEM CD that I own that goes to my other system and I am concerned that the Key Entered off the Compaq Case may not have registered with Microsoft through the activate by phone.

Anyone know how I can verify my key to be the key that is on the outside of the case and if wrong if I can change it to the correct key that is an official label on the outside of the Compaq tower?

Not REALLY worried about any legal problems because its GOT an XP Key AFFIXED to the tower as required, showng that that box has a legal copy of XP Pro associated with it, but concerned if 2 copies are running with same key and trying to talk with MS India support is horrible with trying to address this concern.Your Compaq Windows key will not work with an OEM version of Windows. You need the Compaq restore CD.

Did you get this latest graphics driver direct from Nvidia or the Toshiba site? Actually on the NVIDIA website they don't have the driver (NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200) and on the Toshiba website either =/ anywhere else i can go to find it?
Go here and choose option #2,, or find it manually

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 71.89 Inventec requires that you download the driver for your GPU from their support site.

Laptop drivers should come from the manuf. site...try Toshiba again.I can't find it on the Toshiba website and i tried to google it and all that keeps coming out is Driver Detective.

Solve : XP Boot problem?

Answer»

I am trying to do a clean install of XP on my puter but the disc will not RUN. It runs but nothing comes up on the screen. I got a message earlier saying I have a system32 problem and that something is corrupted. Probably registry problem. How do I get around getting the disc to start? I have done this numerous times but have never had this happen. Thanks for any help.Do you have the CD-Rom as the first to BOOT?

Instruction to CHANGE your boot order:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4533733_change-boot-order-bios.html?ref=fuel&utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=ssp&utm_campaign=yssp_art

good Luck!

spiderThanks Spider. Yes, I have changed the boot order in the bios but I still can`t get the machine to run the os disc to reformat and reinstall xp. Could it be, somehow, that I need to make a floppy to try to get it started? I`ve never had to resort to that so I`m not sure. It seems that my optical drives are not functioning. Could I be missing the drivers or could they have been corrupted also? Make sure you put the CD in the MASTER DRIVE. It is usually the top one.Or if you do have a working floppy drive DLoad a WinME boot floppy with CDROM support from bootdisk.com.
Use the file to create a bootable floppy...boot to it and you should be good to go.
NOTE: I believe it sets R: as the first CDROM drive so you may have to try a few drive letters

At the A: prompt type R: and hit Enter. If it stays at R: then that's the CD drive...at the R: prompt type setup and hit Enter...the XP setup should now start.

Solve : Cannot Get Windows XP To Start?

Answer»

I am having a problem that I am not familiar with.
I am unable to get Windows XP to start.
Everytime I turn on my laptop, things look perfectly normal.
Gradually as the icons down in the lower right hand corner next to the time begin to appear one by one, nothing seems unusual. HOWEVER, about halfway through that process, the screen goes black, there is a slight pause and then it begins to start all over again from the beginning. This never ends. I left it on for about fifteen minutes to see what would happen and it just keeps trying to start over and over.

I do get a screen that comes on occasionally suggesting that a program has been installed incorrectly. However it stays on for about two seconds at most and I am unable to read all of it. The problem is that I have not installed anything at all on this computer recently. I also sometimes get a message that comes on that tells me.."a serious problem has been corrected" but the problem continues.

On the advice of friends, I tried safe mode as well as the
F8 key but neither one had any effect on this problem.

I have a DELL laptop..it does not play cds or dvds at all.
I have Spyware Detector installed and that has been there for almost a year.

I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone has on this.
You can post it here..or you can contact me at my email address:

Solve : On board Sound no longer works?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a PC which has been working fine with regards the on-board sound for a couple of years. Suddenly, it was noticed that the sound no longer works. I have checked the sound and audio devices properties box in the control panel. This told me that there was no sound device attached. ALSO, all of the controls were greyed out.

I rolled back to the oldest system restore point I had. This was about a week ago. This time the sound and audio devices properties box said that there was a device attached. Also all of the controls were back to being in black and usable. When I tried out various sounds, no sounds actually came out of the PC. I tried headphones and the speakers, but to no avail.

I backed out of the restore as I had installed a number of programs betweenm the two points in time and I didn't want to lose them.

The only thing I can put this down to is that I run a regular registry scan. This fixes my registry but perhaps this time it's fixed it good a PROPER as they say.

Is there anything I can do to repair the damage? I've tried reinstalling the drivers (using Driver Detective) but got NOWHERE. You ran a "regular registry scan" using what software? Is that when the sound problem started, immediately after that? Did you notice any gradual degradation of your sound function or did it just suddenly stop working?I was going to say reinstall drivers until I saw that you did....
It might just be a coincidence that it brkoe after you ran a registry scan. You might need to get a new sound card but you can get one for 10 or 15 dollars at neweggIs you sound card integrated? If so what make and model is your computer. Problems like these can usualy be fixed by going to the manufacturer website and downloading the sofware packaged with drivers. For example my card is integrated and the drivers alone are not much help since there is a software package that runs it all. Quote

I've tried reinstalling the drivers (using Driver Detective)

The best place to get drivers is your computer manufacturer's website.

Have you tried to roll back your sound driver in device MANGER? Right click the audio device and select properties and then choose the driver tab and then roll back driver.

You may have to buy a sound card and install it in your computer.Quote
I run a regular registry scan
Absolutely not advisable.JJ are you FOLOWING my posts just to repeat what I said? lol...so your advice sounds stronger.....LOLHe aready reinstalled driversI looked again at the Device Manager and found that although the sound card was not flagged as in error (i.e. no yellow triangle), the drivers had been uninstalled.

So, I reinstalled them and all is well.

Thanks
Glad you got it working!

Solve : Computer wouldn't fully turn on till I renamed Explorer, what caused it??

Answer»

After having read a few forums and help groups, I still cannot find out what exactly caused my computer to not run Explorer.exe or report it as "not found" when I tried to manual load it. Renaming the file and loading worked fine, but that doesn't get to the root of the problem.

Does anyone know what caused this to happen?Do you have Antivirus protection installed on your computer?
What operating system are you using?
Did you do anything prior to this happening? Install something, download something, run something... anything?

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to access the Task Manager.
Click File> Run
Type:
sfc /scannow
Be sure you have your XP DISC ready. This program will search your computer for missing system files, and will replace them.
In some cases, this can be a temporary virus solution, but it should at the very least get Explorer back.

Sorry, I have Norton ANTI Virus on my computer, I'm running XP, and last night I shut down my computer like normal and had no problems at that time.

Everything happened this evening when I turned on the computer and all it showed was the background image for the desk top without icons or a task bar.I WOULD put explorer name back to what it was then scan it for any type of virus or spyware. restart the PC and see if explorer works if not uninstall explorer .

restart the PC and install explorer again.

go to add/remove programs and click on the add/remove windows components and look for explorer and uncheck it.. this will remove explorer... after the PC starts go back to add/remove windows components and put a check mark on explorer to install explorer again

Zylstra ideal will work too.

I hope this helps!

sigh. You can't uninstall or reinstall "explorer" because explorer is a required component of the operating system. For the same reason, it doesn't appear in the add/remove windows components dialog.

sorry about that BC_Programmer ... i way over look what i saw on the post.. thinking "internet explorer" which is what i was talking about.

Thanks for letting me know!
spider P.S. Just so you know ...Internet Explorer should not be removed as well.why not patio, i never had a problem doing it myself in the pass

I don't think IE 6 can be removed from XP without nlite...
Nope. I dont think it can even be removed from 2000.

Its an important component of Windows Updates. BC_Programmer, i understand that part... I know you could uninstall but, why shouldn't you?

that was the question i should have made clear... sorry!

ok.. Zylstra , here we go... you said Its an important component of Windows Updates. HOWEVER, that information is wrong or the person from Microsoft with that information was incorrect.

There's a book by Leo Laporte's PC Help Desk pg133 Fixing a broken windows update it was called.

Leo said windows update is actually a component of enternet explorer.

Leo also said, go to the add/remove programs windows components uncheck internet explorer to uninstall explorer.... i did and restarted the PC and reinstalled it with no problem. I just want to know why you shouldn't remove it. because if it's because you guys are saying it's a component of enternet explorer... then that answer is wrong.

I did ask Microsoft if Windows update is actually a component of Internet Explorer... they said no and i told them where i GOT the information from.

correct me if i'm wrong but, if i am.... talk to Microsoft... they said it wasn't.

not breaking balls... just want to understand

spider

Thanks again.
spider

I had a very similar problem with Norton Anti-Virus as well-- it quarantined Explorer.exe, thus making the system useless. Your problem very well could have been the same. Renaming the file might have made Norton release it.

You might check the quarantine logs in Norton to see if it's in there.

Solve : i'd really love some help?

Answer» OK, so i have windows XP, runs fine, does everything it's supposed to, but when i try to watch streamed videos on youtube or w/e it never shows a video, just a white space where the box should be.

i tried some of the methods i found on this site to fix the problem, i updated flash player, fiddled with the custom security settings to try and make sure nothing was in it's way

idk what's up, i use IE7 i believe, but no other browser will work either. ANYONE know what to do?Does this happen to every video? Or does it sometimes work?

Choose any Youtube video, open it, and hold down CTRL+F5 for a few seconds. Wait, work? Try again. If on the second try, nothing happens, we can rule IE7's crazy Flash management out. i tried the CTRL F5 THING, nothing happened but a really long refresh TIME. also the box for the video seemed larger. but that's just me.

it happens when ever i open a page the streams video. myspace can't disply certain ads either. kind of thankful for that though..... lol

Solve : Transferrring files from XP to Vista, but no video on old machine?

Answer»

My computer table GOT knocked over and screwed up the built-into-the-motherboard video card--now I have no video. So I used this as an excuse to buy a new computer. Now I want to get the files off the old computer. Is there a way to do taht without having video capabilty on the old machine?

Could I perhaps install the C; drive from the old computer and make it a slave drive in the new computer. The C drive has the XP on it and and new one has Vista.

THANKS for any help you can offer. there are important work files on the old machine that i really need. There is really no way of doing this with a video card. U probably could put the old HDD into the new pc and try setting it up for dual START up (meaning which OS boots up first).
There r few option buy an external HDD enclosure install the old HDD in the enclosure and COPY the files u want. This option only works for files not programs. The last resort is: try talking to a friend to barrow his pc. Remove his old Hdd install yours. U could trans form files this way. Let us know how it worked? You can recover your data. Its not that hard. Check this out.
