Solve : Win2k Server BSOD?

Answer»

I recently got an old machine and I'm trying to set up a SERVER. This problem started after I got all the windows updates through express install on the website. 4 out of 5 times I log on to the machine, after about a MINUTE I GET a BSOD which says

Solve : Safely Remove Hardware Error?

Answer»

I have a thinkpad T60p, windows xp sp2.

I have the option to safely the HL-DT-ST DVDRAM, or Drive D:, which i never understood why. Can i get rid of this? Everything works, the drive reads cds fine, but it just seems strange that i should be able to "safely remove it".First thing to try...
Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and RUN CCleaner
While running CCleaner, MAKE sure, you have a checkmark in Old prefetch data under Advanced section.

Restart computer, and SEE if DVD drive is still listed in "Safely remove hardware". I assume, it's internal drive?

If that doesn't help, registry edit is needed.
Download ListUsbDrives: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/files/listusbdrives.zip
Unzip, and double click on ListUsbDrives_To_Notepad.cmd file.
NOTEPAD will open with all of your USB devices listed.
Copy all text, and paste it in your reply.

Solve : XP Install will not recognize hard drive?

Answer»

So, I just connected my brand new HARD drive (Western Digital Caviar SE, 80 GB) to my motherboard (Soyo Dragon2 KT880, a few YEARS old), and I'm trying to install Windows XP. Windows Setup says I don't have a hard drive installed. As what I know about hardware could fit into a thimble, I'm at a loss for what to do. Everything is set up correctly as far as I can tell. I've TRIED replacing the cables, resetting the CMOS, and pleading tearily with my system, but nothing has worked yet.

Some back info: I installed a new power supply as my old one was insufficient. Everything was going fine, but after the install I started getting a message that said "Insert BOOT media or select boot device". I thought that maybe during the install I'd killed my old hard drive (there was a funny spark when I first powered it up), so I got the aforementioned new hard drive and copy of XP, only to have this come up. I'm wondering if it was even the hard drive in the first place, now

Can SOMEONE help? What do you need to know?

Thank you VERY much!

JenQuote from: Chidori on July 19, 2008, 05:53:39 PM

(there was a funny spark when I first powered it up),

Where was the spark? Does the motherboard look damaged?

Is the hdd detected in the BIOS?

EDIT: Do you have both the data cable and the power cable connected? The spark was actually from one of the cables. I'm not sure which. There is no visible damage to the motherboard, and I'm still getting the Soyo Dragon thingie (technical term, lol) when I boot up.

The hard drive is NOT being detected when I start up, and when I go into the BIOS I don't see it.

Yes, both the data cable and the power cable are connected. ^_^

Thanks!Try using a new power lead.Same thing.

I have also tried connecting only the hard drive and not my CD or DVD drives. If you can, try drive in another computer and see if it works. If not, return it. Or, try another drive in your system.

Solve : Windows - Registry recovery?

Answer»

Hi, I've been having some what-seems-to-be harddisk stop errors. I have been trying to do a Windows Recovery and if won't let me.
Message - "One of the files containing the system's registry data had to be RECOVERED by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful."
But it takes ages to log into windows, even after start-up, and this message keeps coming up every TIME I restart, and system restore keep saying that it cannot restore, no changes have been made to my system.
For some reason also, it keeps saying some new hardware has been found. It doesn't specify which, and I've checked device manager... no signs of anything foreign there.

Any help or suggestions, please help me.Try starting with Safe Mode and doing a system restore to one week ago. Does this work?Post alot more info on the machine; what happened prior to this and any new programs or hardware installed and someone will be along shortly...Hey I tried allsorts with SafeMode. I have a feeling it's not my harddisk, just the installation of Windows when I LAST reformatted must have had a few bugs... for instance, the standard installation of windows brings it's own zip utility, this one didn't have it. There seemed to have been problems with registry, cause THINGS were just not on.
I hadn't installed anything new when I started having the stop-bluescreen errors, I was just on MSN messenger, and all of a sudden, chaos!
Do you guys think I need a new hard disk? I have now reformatted it again and hopefully no more problems will happen after updates and drivers installed. I just hope it was a one-off thing and not the hard disk.
What do you guys think? What is your OS? Is it an XP?

And also, as what Patio said we need more info about your PC. Please read this

Good LUCK and keep us posted after your reformat! Quote from: InfadaStone on July 20, 2008, 06:36:17 AM

Solve : Unlocker?

Answer»

I have unlocker installed on my right mouse button. On almost all my files or folder I right click on I can SEE and use the unlocker button. Yesterday, I noticed that when I click on any file in the Temporary files folder, the unlocker button is gone. Has this ever happened to anyone else? What location of temp folder? Windows version?Windows XP SP3 I've ATTACHED two pictures. I hope they will explain what I'm writing about.

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Second picture

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]This is very good question, and I can only GUESS the answer. I don't know, if this is correct answer.
Temporary Internet Files folder is the cache for IE. I suspect, Unlocker may not treat them as real files, since in FACT they are just copies of web pages, you visit.
I looked for any contact at Unlocker web page (to ASK a question), but I couldn't find any.Why would there be a need to use Unlocker on these files anyways ? ?
I believe Broni's suspicions are correct though.I was just curious as to why this was the only folder where the unlocker had disappeared.Because it's a Temp folder...EDIT: If it isn't a Windows file then it is 'seen' differently by Unlocker.
If you chose Delete and it was locked you would then get this.

Folder/file doesn't have to be locked for Unlocker to show up under right click menu (post #3)

I's one of those that's clear in my head but explaining it is tough since I don't know the right terms to use. It depends on where and what the file is on how Windows "sees" it. It's no biggie. I was just curious. I guess the answer is that it's a temp folder.Don't worry, Dave.
I provided my guess, but I'm still curious, too.

Solve : help to delete a user profile?

Answer»

you MEAN...like a pre-set signature on documents?

that...isn't exactly the same as COMPUTER profiles.I agree with JXY. Removing the profile might not get rid of the signature and you may be stuck with it forever without that account.

Can you tell us what printer you have?In WINDOWS EXPLORER, in C:\Documents and Settings, what username is listed? Yours, or the other guy?
If the other guy, it can't be changed without reinstalling Windows.
I know exactly what it is, a signature or a profile. But whenever I print something, on the bottom of the page appears something like Canon/XYZ/document1.doc, where XYZ is the name of the user.

How do I get that XYZ to be replaced with my name or profile? Beside, in documents and settings, there is a folder for XYZ, like there is for the current users on the computer, Administrator and guest. Thats what leads me to believe its a profile

if you're talking about word documents, could the previous user be using MS Word's Letter Wizard or one of its default templates?

just a thought...

and, is your account also an administrator? if so, did you install your printer software using your account?

if not, then perhaps you might want to try re-installing the printer software using your account. just another thought...

also, there might be a built in SETTING in your printer software, which automatically prints the directory of the file at the bottom of the document?

Solve : Unable to access/view an initiated program?

Answer»

I have MS XP operating system. Currently, when I try to utilize Windows MEDIA Player, the tab shows up on the TASKBAR but I am unable to view the player, though I can HEAR the sound. When I right click the taskbar tab and minimize Windows Media Player, the program seems to be coming from the right side of my monitor but offscreen. If I right click the tab and try to move the program, the mouse cursor disappears from the screen and as I hold the left mouse BUTTON down and drag to my left, a 4 way cursor comes on to the screen from the right but without the Windows Media Player. Why is this happening and what do I do to correct it

I also noticed that the mouse cursor will deadend at the top and left side of my display screen before going off the screen. It will go just past the screen view and out of sight on the bottom portion of the display. But the cursor seems to go for some distance past the viewing area of the display on the right side of the display screen.

Thanks,

but loaded {all} the back-up files back on to my Drive C: !
That makes sense, since you tried to "back-up" with the zip drive as the source. We haven't been informed of what backup application you're using, but you "back-up" by getting the files onto the ZIP disk. (that is, the hard drive as the source, the ZIP drive as the target). I'll assume that you actually have 2,400,000 bytes not gigabytes, (on account of your OS), backing up your entire ({full} ) C: drive would require around 200 zip disks at 100MB each(unless it actually isn't a ZIP drive but rather your using ZIP drive as a blanket term for removable mass storage).

Solve : need help in restoring back up?

Answer»

I'm a beginner with PROBLEMS. Backed up hard drive before changing it. Used back up cd's that came with the computer but they don't have all of the information and programs and WORK books that I have gathered over the past few years.
Can I do a restore from the Maxtor external drive even though I have things on the hard drive or do I have to erase the hard drive and start over? When I open the Maxtor drive I see 3 listings: 1 is for the Maxtor drive, 1 for the c drive and 1 for the system restore. Which of them do I use to restore everything? If I have to erase the hard drive and start over, how should I do that?
As I said, I'm a beginner and stationed overseas and i need help.

Ken

Did you use your external HD to back up your data and then use the restore disk to reinstall XP? Have you formatted you C drive? I think the new hard drive is formatted ALREADY. The external drive is a Maxtor one touch with 300 gb capacity. Can I restore everything from the maxtor to my computer even though there is a lot of information already on the drive? Won't I end up with 2 copies of most everything?
When I select a date on the Maxtor I get 3 things: 1 is Maxtor, next is C drive and last one is restore drive. Should I try to restore all 3 to my current C drive?
I am using Windows XP home edition.ok.... so the new hard drive you installed in your computer is empty or have you already installed windows onto it.

You should be able to copy your entire hard drive from the Maxator external and it should just work.

keep us postedNo the drive is not empty. I reinstalled the 7 cd's that came with it. But so much stuff is missing.
Again, won't I end up with a lot of duplication or will it sort itself out? Which files should I try to get from the Maxtor, the Maxtor files, the C drive files or the restore files? I'm completely lost.
I would not do anything but since i downloaded the SP3, the computer is REALLY messed up.
thanks for your advice.

Solve : Access Denied (tmp and lck files)?

Answer»

I have two files that I cannot access one is a temp file ~DFB*.tmp 16kb the other a fb_*.lck file. 256kb. I am running microsoft xp service pack 3 my system is a HP media Center 4mb of ram 256 video card.

When I attempted to access the above files using "run command %temp%" I attempt to open the files and I receive the following message : "the process cannot be accessed because it is being used by another process".

I have not been able to find out which program writes the file and what the files consist of. My next choice would be to use DOS commands running in the safe mode but not sure how to write the code. It has been awhile but I have used basic dos commands in the past for writing batch files and such. Where do the files reside - what directory (folder); complete path?

Why are you concerned about them? What kind of command is "run command %temp%"?
How do you expect to open .tmp file?%temp% in the run command shows all of my temp. internet files from here I delete all of these files. The fb_1512.lck file
and the ~DFB17C.tmp files I am not able to delete or access. I believe they may be associated with malware of some sort.
The folder path is C:\document and settings\HP_administrator\Local Settings\Temp, files in this temporary folder are meant to be temporary for some reason I am not able to delete or read the file the lck file is 256k in size and the ~DFB file is 16 KB in size.

The other interesting aspect is that part of the file NAMES keep changing the fb_xxxx.lck and the ~DFBxxxx.tmp.
Any ideas what they could be? In safe mode I can delete the ~DFBxxxx.tmp file and the fb_.lck file is not there. Once I go to standard windows the files appear with different numbers and so it goes.

I have been dealing with these files for about 6 months, no one has offered a single idea what they are or who they belong to. I looked at all of my start up files and nothing out of the ordinary is there.

I suspect I have some hidden files that are not coming up, the other problem I also noticed is that when I do a msconfig file change I get a message that I am not authorized, however the CHANGES do get made in SPITE of it.......Again any ideas would be welcome. http://filext.com/file-extension/lck
Extension: LCK
Lock File
Quote

Various programs use this extension; too many to list individually. Take clues from the location of the file as a possible pointer to exactly which program is producing the file. The file's date and time can also help if you know which programs you were running when the file was written.

You may not be able to delete some temp files, because they're in use.
Some temp files may not show up in Safe Mode, because the program, which creates them, may not be running in Safe Mode.
Any particular concern about those files?Do you have ACT! installed or any other database program?I have tried using the date as a code to finding out when a process was runningnoting the date and time stamp, not much success.

I rebooted and the lck and temp file have the same date and time stamp. So they are connected not sure to what.

I tried using a process summary program by microsoft and I am not sophisicated enough to know all of the process steps I am viewing, although it is interesting. The program is microsofts "rawview" of views and thumbnails" it is a real time process viewer.

So I am getting closer to an answer, just do not know all of the questions to ask.

The only data base program I have installed is Lotus suite.
What is ACT?Can you zip both files, and attach them to your next reply?
...and again...

Lots of programs keep data in a .lck file. I have seen quite a few queries identical to your own about ~DFx and fb...lck files; the answer seems to be that they are nothing to worry about.

The DFxxx.tmp files are to be expected; Windows creates them when you logon and (usually) deletes them when you LOG off. They are necessary for the proper operation of Windows and should not (in fact, cannot) be deleted by the user while they are current. I would be worried if they were not there! Often, when people become aware of the Windows temporary folder, and start poking around, they become alarmed at what they find in there.

If you are concerned about what is being loaded at startup, and also WISH to be notified if any new programs try to insert themselves into the startup sequence, I suggest you try Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and his Startup Monitor. I have used them both for years. They complement each other nicely.

Solve : Download dialog box not staying up. (Fixed)?

Answer»

When I download a file from the internet, my download dialog box shows up, continues to end then disappears and then winzip starts. I don't KNOW what I changed, but I would like the dialog box to stay up so I can have the option to send it to another directory or open or save. If this MAKES sense. I've checked winzip and the only thing that does it, is if i disassociate .zip files with winzip. The dialog box will stay shown then, but then I don't have a right click menu item for winzip in the context menu. Any help appreciated.

Solve : Only AOL browser is loading pages?

I'm using XP Home edition. After a lightning storm (coincidence or not I don't know), neither IE or Firefox will load anything at all (page not found), but AOL explorer is going full speed. What can this be? I ran Spybot and MCafee, reformatted just 3 weeks ago...What could it be?Hmmmm....have you downloaded any new programs recently from when it worked fine to this point?Nope, no new programs...tried system restore to a previous date....and about 4 VIRUS scans...I reformatted just a few weeks ago too, everything was fine.

I can say that when I run a test on speedtest.net that the "ms ping" is around the 150's as OPPOSED to the usual 40's-60's before, and the download speed just rapidly goes by in a shakey, unusual WAY, thought it still SHOWS a good 9 out of 10 megs, which isn't full speed but still..what are you trying to download that its running at that speed? are you using any P2P programs?try resetting internet explorer (if you're using IE7 .... ask someone else if you're using ie6.) and make a new profile for firefox.

Solve : Memory Test Fail?

Answer»

I shut down my pc for a week to GO on vacation. I got BACK and turned it on and tried to check email. My computer went into a shut down/restart. It came back on with a BLACK screen that reads Memory test fail. Then after 2 minutes the black screen starts to go crazy with lines both black and white and color to the point where you see nothing but the lines.

I don't know a lot about computers, so any help will be much appreciated. My mother board is a couple of years old. Socket 478 system board with a Pentium 4 processor. Let me know if more specs are needed.
Turn computer off. Open computer CASE. Clean inside, USING can of compressed air.

Solve : unable to use flash usb ports but computer recognizes the hardware?

Hello Guys,
Have had this PROBLEM for about a week now... Nothing I input in my usb drives will WORK, meaning usb flash drives, mp3 players, cameras etc. EXCEPT for a usb mouse. Now I even tried the same usb mouse on all the usb ports with correct results. As soon as I insert a hardware into a usb port I get message "safely remove hardware". When I look at the device manager, flash drives shows error as Mass Storage Device -Generic. I wouldn't think that all the flash drives I tried will have the same problem, so I tried reinstalling the usb drivers from the Recovery CD but does not help. Seen on this forum that this can happen while trying to install SP3 for win xp - now this do came up frequently as a win. update and failed on installation. I followed microsoft advise and d/l the file "fixccs" and this didn't help. Checked add/remove programs and sp3 does not exist.

Solve : nvidia geforce fx 5500 graphics card driver.?

Answer»

Hi.

Just had to do a system restore cos I got infected with both blusod and joke blusod and downloader the other day.

Soooo, I reinstalled everything, got avast anti virus off the net, and then downloaded the latest driver for my graphics card.

What happened? It made everything BAD! SOMEHOW, it reset my COLOUR scheme to 4 bit! So I downloaded a previous driver and that had the same result.

Anyone got any advice? I've been working on it all day and its doing my head in!!

Cheers, guys.

FeenixCan you TRY to Roll Back the driver via Device Manager?

What Operating System are you using?still using xp. Rolled it back using device manager - thing is, the animation I'm getting is jerky as *censored*. Think I may just get a new card - anyone suggest one?

FeenixOK. This is a little strange.

I downloaded the 169 driver for the card and....its working. It didnt work the other day, but now it is. The only difference in my system is that I am now running on wireless internet rather than using a cable to connect to my ROUTER. Could be as simple as having a dodgy cable? Would that have any effect, maybe scramble the download or something?

FeenixIt could be. Try using your cable again and, if the internet is still dodgy, try using a different cable.

Solve : XP keeps "resetting" itself?

Answer»

hello.
I've been experiencing this strange problem with my pc. Almost everytime i start my pc, xp "resets" itself as if its a fresh copy of windows....the background is set to "bliss" (the default one) ..all desktop icons and settings are gone... the xp silver theme is changed to blue again...and it even asks me to take a tour of windows xp which usually pops up upon fresh installation of windows. moreover the worst thing is that every program goes blank as if its freshly installed too... firefox loses it's bookmarks and asks me to "import bookmarks from IE" (a prompt *again* displayed at fresh installation). Azureus (torrent downloader) lost all the torrents i've added and every option is set to default. i customized taskbar and start MENU... (added quick launch etc) ... switched to default... and messenger doesn't remember my ids... every program is as if its newly installed.. this problem has been bugging me for months... i doubt its anythin related to ram or hd cuz i recently added a new hd and ram and a power supply as well... COMPUTER specs are:

D865GVHZ (recently changed under warranty)
P4 2.8 Ghz (recently changed under warranty)
1.23 GB Ram, 120 GB HD,
running windows xp professional..

Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks in advance....
How do you log on to your computer? Administrator or User? Password?

Sounds like Windows is opening with a "default" profile. How many User Profiles do you show?

If you log on with a different User Profile, does Windows "reset?"Did you make any changes to your system before this started happening? Does it happen every time you restart? Is this a cracked version of Windows? Do you have any virus protection? There's only one user account on my pc and i dun even keep any password for it... apart from it the administrator account exists (which comes on that safe mode THINGY) ... i recently added more ram to my pc but the problem existed even before it.. I've been using AVG Anti-virus but i dun believe its a software problem... my pc's taking more time to boot even before that "windows xp" WINDOW shows up... i flushed my windows and installed a newer version yesterday...yet it's the same... i can't believe it... 1.23 GB of ram and 120 Gb of hd without any program installed on the pc (after re-installation of windows) should take a jiffy... it shouldn't lag this much... often my taskbar and desktop "freezes" as if it's loading a heavy program... when there's actually no program running... i often keep a track of task manager but whenever it "freezes" there's no program running ...the highest CPU usage taken up is by "system idle process" running thru system... obviously meaning there's no program running and everything shud be normal... i have a clue maybe it's due to my hard drive... i bought it recently but it developed some bad sectors...had it repaired from the company (seagate)...it wuz running fine... i m not quite sure if its the same problem... scandisk doesn't show any bad sectors though...help needed...! What do you mean by this? Did you repair your existing Windows installation or did you re-format the hdd and re-install Windows? What version of Windows did you install?

Why did you replace your motherboard and processor? Are you sure that Seagate "repaired" your hdd instead of replacing it? Finally, how much physical memory do you have - number of modules, type (DDR, DDR2, etc), brand, and size? It APPEARS that you have had a lot of problems with this system - right? Solve : Help! Computer will not start!?

Answer»

Hello, my computer recently stopped working. I get the blue screen of death fairly often, but usually I can just restart and the problem is fixed. However, one popped up yesterday, and like usual I try to restart, but when the Windows XP logo comes up (with the little loading bar under it) it loads for a while and then automatically goes to a blue screen every time. Before this, though, it tells me to pick an option out of these: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe mode with command prompt, Last good configuration, and start windows normally. No matter which of these I pick, it ENDS up going to the blue screen no matter what. I can't do anything but get into the setup options by PRESSING F2 and that does me no good.

This is what the blue screen says everytime:

" A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Disable or uninstall any antivirus, disk defragmentation, or backup utilities. Check your HARD drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82751c00, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000) "

And that's it. But I have no clue if I can even do anything it tells me to do since my computer won't start up! Is there any way to fix this? Would I need an XP disk?Disconnect from the internet, disable all anti-virus, anti-spyware programs.

Start>Run, type cmd, enter; type chkdsk c: /f, , enter; this assumes that your system drive is C:, if not, substitute the correct drive for C:.

After chkdsk runs, do a shutdown (not re-boot) wait 15 seconds and power on.

Post back.

Best of luck!Do you have your Windows XP CD?
If so, boot from the CD first, and after your computer loads XP setup, then run recovery console...
Select your system drive to be repaired then type chkdsk /f or /r
Good luck!
Keep us posted! The poster may not be able to do that, since he's stuck with BSOD.
That 024 error, may indicate, as you suspect, some bad sectors on HD, or system file corruption.
I'd do two things:
1. Run free diagnostic program available form HD manufacturer site: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
...if HD checks out OK, I'd go for...
2. Windows repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmYeah, I can't really do anything because I can't start the computer...

So I need my XP CD? It was already installed on my computer when I got it, so sadly I don't. I do know it was running SP2 however. Are you hearing any beeps while it tries to start?Hard drive diagnostic tool creates self-booting CD.Quote from: SuperDave on July 21, 2008, 08:11:13 PM

Are you hearing any beeps while it tries to start?

Sometimes. Does that mean anything?

Although something I forgot to mention: Usually (most of the time, but oddly sometimes not) a screen will come up before the "last known configuration, start normally, safe mode, etc." page telling me either "The amount of system memory has changed", or "Memory read/write/address failure blah blah blah expecting blah blah blah...decreasing available memory". What does this mean? What kind of beeps (long, short, pattern)? Do you know what BIOS manufacturer you have - Award, AMI, Phoenix, etc? Also, report your motherboard manufacturer and model, or computer make and model.

Did you run the hdd diagnostic? What was the result?

Try to remove and re-seat the computer RAM. Shut down the computer, unplug from wall, and ground yourself before TOUCHING anything inside the computer. If you have more than 1 memory module, leave all but one module out of the system and try to start the computer; if no boot, try again with the other module.

If you are uncomfortable inside the case, download memtest86, create a CD from the .iso file and boot from the CD and run the test. Run at least 4 hours - ANY error means bad RAM. You'll need to remove a module and test separatey to determine which module is defective. http://www.memtest.org/

Solve : Restoring XP Registry Point, what are possible dangers??

Answer»

So XP has "System Restore" that allows me to go back in time and use a copy of the registry from a previous point in the past. Any downside or possible issues to this? Seems easy enough right?

Thanks,

ScottWelcome to the CH forums.

System Restore has the reputation of not working when it's really needed. I have experienced a few (less than 5) occasions when the Restore Points created automatically could not be USED, only those created manually would perform. Not only does System Restore restore the XP registry, it restores many system files. My PREFERENCE is to have System Restore disabled, others will have other preferences.

If you are only concerned with Registry Backup and restore I recommend the Erunt utility which, in my case, runs automatically on the first boot of each day allowing registry restore to that time if necessary.

From my experiences, System Restore has been very helpful. However, it can be a little annoying.
For example, I remember restoring to a point a few days back and some of my work on the computer had been moved to the desktop because the folder I put them in hadn't been created yet.
Start menu Shortcuts may be deleted as well. Stuff like that but I have NEVER lost any files that couldn't be replaced. Some installed programs may be lost. For instance...if you use System Restore to roll back to last Wednesday, any programs you've installed since then will have to be reinstalled. Also, many files that you have deleted since then will return (this is how viruses are able to return via System Restore). As for personal files, they should be left alone. In my experience, it has been very rare for anything of MINE to be deleted, and even if it is, it can be retrieved. Certain files that you have moved may be returned to their original locations or you may experience something like what Carbon described. So, with that said...there's a chance of some of your DATA being moved around, but for the most part, using System Restore is safe.Obviously, System Restore is very useful feature.
Remember Win 98, without it?
But, I prefer ERUNT, as Dusty does. I have it running on all installation. It saved me, where System Restore failed.

Solve : IE BROWSER WILL NOT CONNECT TO ON-LINE BANK?

Answer»

I am using Windows XP Pro-Serv. PAK 2 with Internet Explorer. Something has been erased from my Internet Explorer and I am unable to connect to my on-line banking site. I am also unable to download any version of IE from the Microsoft site. It seems that the banking site is the only web site that I cannot connect to. I can connect to almost anything else. One strange THING. I have tried to download Mozilla Foxfire and have downloaded it successfully, but it will not run---it seems to be blocked in some way. It will not even START up though it appears to have loaded successfully. Why doesn't it work? I thought I might try to get to my banking site using it.
I do have a back up of my system on another media drive that can restore to a point before this occured. But I am inexperienced. To use this backup, will I need to erase my "C" drive? I am using StorageSync Backup Software with the external drive media.
Just one other point. Does anyone know how to save the ADDRESSES of "Favorites" in Internet Explorer. If I have to delete IE, I need to make sure I have the addresses (perhaps that I can print out) of my favorite sites so that I can get back to them after perhaps doing a restore of some type. My backup has these sites preserved but I would like another way to keep the addresses in addition to the backup I have.
Thanks for any help====JLDYou can open all the other web sites and even download stuff but you can install another browser? Or UPDATE the version you have now?

I would be looking for a virus or malware. What anti viruse program are you running? Also do you have any spyware software running on your machine?

are you using ie7? If you are, try resetting it. And backup your favorites if you want to be sure you don't lose them.

See if that can get you connected to your bank site.

Then I suggest you give your computer a checkup. Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware or EMSI's A-Squared free seems to be good programs --> just update them before you give it a run.

If you want more help with malware specifics, shoot a message here to Broni or Patio or Evilfantasy and they will check for you.Have you contacted the Bank ? ?
What are your browser security settings at ?you could try an alternative browser such as safari Quote from: programming_pat on July 22, 2008, 08:48:31 PM

you could try an alternative browser such as safari

opera or firefox or seamonkey are all other alternatives as well. I like seamonkey and it seems to do fine but firefox supports the most number of sites as far as my experience tells me --> less "unsupported browser" problems or problems where website doesn't load as intended, although in general, all the browsers are ok.

FYI, in firefox or seamonkey, you can install ietab extension/addon and you will have ie only when you need it (browser will use ie to load the page, then display the results in a tab within firefox or seamonkey)

In any case, I suggest you try alternative browsers to see if problem is within IE or if it's a problem coming from elsewhere within your computer--> try installing in safe mode to see if "blocking" problem is gone.

Solve : Can't boot, can't reinstall...help??

Answer»

Ok here is my dilemma. A friend had my computer for a time, and during a storm lost electricity. Upon rebooting, he kept getting an error that stated: “Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\drivers\Ntfs.sys

I thought perhaps the hard drive might have been damaged, so I checked it in another machine and it was fine. So then I tried reinstalling windows, and upon booting from the cd I get this error:

“The file Dac2w2k.sys is missing or corrupted”

So I am at a loss as to what to try next...I’ve googled that file and tried the update from mylex, etc. but I can’t even access anything within the pc to replace the file. I also tried running the drive on another machine to replace the file that way, but I can’t even FIND that file anywhere in the Windows directory. Any ideas? Thanks!

By the way I am running XP Pro.Do you have the Windows Pro CD?With a problem like this, it might be less of a hassle to backup everything on the drive, reformat, and then reinstall Windows. After spending a week trying to fix an un-bootable hard drive, I have finally DECIDED to resort to this tactic for my own computer. It isn't the most ideal method, but it's certainly better than having no computer at all.Yep I have the cd, and I can't reinstall at all...as I cannot get past the error screens to do so. The hard drive is fine, as I tested it in another machine.0. More information might be helpful. See here

1. Quote from: servo2112 on July 22, 2008, 06:08:59 PM

I thought perhaps the hard drive might have been damaged, so I checked it in another machine and it was fine.

How did you check it in another machine? Did you access it as a slave drive or did you actually boot its operating system on the other machine? (Don't boot it.)

2. Test the System RAM. Reseat and test the memory. Install one memory module only and test it. Then replace it with the other memory module and test it. Then test both together. If you get errors, you might try the module in the other memory socket (in the UNLIKELY event the socket has a problem). You need to observe Electro Static Discharge (ESD) PRECAUTIONS when handling electronic components (like memory modules).

MemTest86 is a standalone program on a bootable floppy or CD that will rigorously test your memory. It will run until you manually stop it (or the program crashes - not normal behavior). Let it run for several complete passes. You shouldn't have errors.

See MemTest86. Follow the "Free DOWNLOAD" link (left hand side of web page) to either the floppy:
Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.4a installable from Windows and DOS

or CD versions:
Download - Memtest86 v3.4a ISO image (zip)

The "Technical Info" link (left hand side of web page) is the documentation for the program.

3. Test the Hard Drive. Go the hard drive manufacturer's WEBSITE and find the diagnostic software for the make and model number of your hard drive. Download the software and create the bootable floppy or CD to test the drive. Run the non-destructive tests only (to preserve the data on hard drive).

4. Use Recovery Console. Boot to the recovery console from the Windows XP CD or the downloadable five volume floppy disk set (Microsoft web site). Use the chkdsk command to check the integrity of the file system as well as the disk surface. If errors are found use the chkdsk command to repair them. Then attempt normal boot from disk.

If you're still having problems, you can use the recovery console to replace "ntfs.sys" with fresh copy from Windows XP CD.

Restart the computer. It's funny, because it's only in America that PEOPLE think the 12 hour clock with AM/PM is "standard" for time on a PC. Here in Europe, 24 hour time is pretty standard. We don't call it "mililtary" time either.
Thank you so much...this was driving me nutzo...i really appreciate your answer and your time evilfantasy!

I perhaps should say that here in England the 24 hour clock is not as universal as it is in the rest of Europe. Informally, at home, people will still say "nine pee-em" or "half PAST three" or "two in the morning", rather than "21:00", "15:30" or "02:00" but in business use for schedules, reports, time sheets etc, the 24 hr clock is mostly used. Some, mainly older people mentally subtract 12 for "PM" times, (and sometimes get it wrong, e.g. reading "18:00" as 8 PM) and complain about having to use "continental" time, like they do about metres and degrees C.

(You will need the files installed for complex script and right-to-left languages to view this post correctly.)

It would sound something like "sam toom" (สามทุ่ม), "sam" (สาม) means 3, and "toom" (ทุ่ม) is the word for evening hours. 7:00pm would be "nueng toom", where "neung" is 1. Here's a complete list for those interested in reading it:

1:00AM ตีหนึ่ง (tee nueng)
2:00AM ตีสอง (tee song)
3:00AM ตีสาม (tee sam)
4:00AM ตีสี่ (tee see)
5:00AM ตีห้า (tee ha)

Solve : XP Installation Issue!!!!!?

Answer»

Hello everybody, I have an Issue installing the Windows XP Professional SP2 OS on my new PC. It has installed by default Windows Vista Home, but I would like to install Windows XP.

The point is that my PC (Packard Bell Imedia D7221) comes with a new featured devices for me:

- USB SCSI Hard Drive
- USB SCSI DVD-ROM

I don't know why, but the boot XP boot loader starts PERFECTLY until it finish, because it shows me the old fashioned Windows BLUE Screen and don't start the OS installation menu.

Please I need your help!!!

Best Regards!!are you SAYING that you're trying to dual boot vista and xp?

or do you want to replace vista with xp?

either way, i think it would be good if you explained how you went about installing xp.Well, I'm trying to install WXP with Vista, everyone in one partition. The point is that the WXP installation menu doesn't start.

I think is a compatibility stuff between WXP and the HDD.

I've been read in other web sites and the solution is to get a fixed XP installation including the OAS SCSI USB drivers.

But I'm still in troubleQuote

Well, I'm trying to install WXP with Vista, everyone in one partition.

woah woah woah. bad move. two OSs should be installed in two separate partitions.

that is probrably what went wrong. (i'm assuming you've already installed xp and vista on the same partition as you say you've seen the windows xp bootloader).

vista still installed?

use vista repair disc to repair install vista, then boot from that. then remove xp. then re-install xp on a different partition. No, I'm installing it in different partitions. I need the HDD drivers for the mainboard and LOAD it from the WXP installation (When the installer interface shows the press F6 option)

Before many tests I've been found that WXP don't have the specific drivers for the HDD, that's why I receive the famous blue screen, I have to load the HDD drivers from a diskette, and it install successfullyyou mean like raid/ide drivers?XP won't have the drivers...you need to get them from the MBoard manuf. website.Solved.

The Packard Bell iMedia D7221 XP drivers could be found following this link:

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?detailid=838&DetailName=Driver&MenuID=44&LanID=9

It works!

Thanks for your Help!!

Best Regards!!glad to have helped.

Solve : The number of "handles" running in the task manager continuously goes up?

Answer»

Hello,

The PROBLEM - After my computer is on about 4-5 hours it experiences a "fatal error" and shuts down windows.

What I have found out so far - In the task manager there are 44 processes running (this stays about constant) and 480 threads running (this stays about constant). However, the number of handles running starts about 9000 (when first booting up) and continuously rises about 5 a second. This means the available memory continuously GOES down. The commit charge starts about 300M/1224M. When the total commit charge reaches the limit commit charge the computer shuts down windows. It takes about 4 hours or so after tuning it on and the number of handles has reached 72000 by this point.

The CPU Usuage stays low. It's currently 10% as I type this. I have tried manually ENDING different processes. My thinking is that maybe one of them is making the handles go up but no matter what I close the handle number is still rising.

Computer info:
Dell
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80 GHz
Windows XP, Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 2
504 M RAM
37 GB hard drive with 8GB free

How the problem seemed to start about a month ago. I ran out of hard drive space so I deleted years worth of photos. The problem seemed to be there afterwards. May be coincidence - not sure. I don't really know much about this.

Any ideas, advice, or things to try would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Barbvirus check would be a good plan.
Wow - what a great analysis! Kudos

Sounds like a program or service with bad memory management. Does Task Manager show any programs running while the Handles count increases? If so, which programs?

See if you still have a swap file set up after "running out of hard drive space"
- Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced tab>Performance-settings>Advanced tab>Virtual Memory-change>Choose "Let Windows manage" or "System manage" ->Set, then "Okay" out. Re-boot.

See what happens to the Handles count if you boot into Safe MODE. Likewise, in 'Normal" mode, try this: Start>Run> type msconfig, enter>on the General tab, select the 'Diagnostic Startup' option, "okay" and re-boot.

Advise back.

EDIT: Dias and I posted at the same time - start with an av scan, if you haven't already.

Solve : May I lower priority of winlogon.exe in Windows Task manager ??

Answer»

I am using Windows XP Home Edition with SP3.

Many processes are shown as being at "Normal" priority,
but only winlogon.exe plus TWO others are at "High Priority".

If I try to turn it down to "Normal" or "Low" I am warned this could cause system instability - BUT this is a general disclaimer against any CHANGE to any process.

Is it actually safe for me to turn this particular process down to "Normal" or "Low" ?
What consequences should I expect ?

NB what I am hoping for is that the Windows Start up Log-In screen will patiently wait for the COMPLETION of the boot-up SEQUENCE, waiting until the System Restore services etc. etc. are fully armed and ready for action before I am given the opportunity to submit my password and log in. I have determined that it is the CRAZY haphazard launching of the log in Start up processes before completion of the initial boot-up that causes my SYSTRAY to lose icons and have nothing other than the clock.

Regards
Alan.

Yes, you need to actvate your Windows O.S. within 30 days of installing, or it will quit working properly. When it asks if you want to activate Windows, click on the affirmative answer. It will have a drop-down box of several different countries. Highlight you country (U.S.) and it will give you 2-3 numbers to call. You will probably want to call the toll-free number. You need to be in front of your computer. The process is quite simple and shall only take 5-10 minutes.
I always activate by phone, because I've had to reactivate the same computer several times, and if I do it over the internet, it will say I've done it too many times and won't let me PROCEED.
This is your answer ->call MS. If you have a LEGAL copy the entire process will take less than 3 minutes.hi with regards to drmsucks windows xp has already been activated the day it was installed so why would i need to call ms, i expect i have been invected by a virus so looks like i will have to reformat my h/d and start again

many thanks

hi there when i turn on my pc i get my log in logo and enter my password then a message appears saying this copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on - do you want to activate windows now yes or no
when i press yes a screen says windows is already activated press ok to exit - when i press ok it then logs me out

Also it wont let me start up in safe mode

any ideas
many thanks
juan

The activation process is not perfect - sometimes a Windows update will cause the Windows system to seek a re-activation.

If you think that a re-install is easier than a phone call, or you have reason to believe that you have a virus that you chose not to disclose here, certainly do the format and re-install.If you re-install you will need to re-activate .....
Seems like a drastic step to me rather than a phone call...hi again if i call ms will i be able to log in to my ACCOUNT as it is in a loop

many thanks

Solve : Computer cycles during startup, but no boot-up?

Answer»

I have a desktop PC that WAS running Windows XP. For no apparent reason, now, on power-up, it is stuck in some sort of loop... Initially comes up with the blue screen "We apologize for the inconvenience..." but the 30 second countdown finishes, goes to a black screen showing it's "loading"... then goes back to the "Inconvenience" screen, and continues looping. Prior to the "Inconvenience" screen, I am able to hit "F1" and it brings up the Phoenix Award BIOS CMOS Setup Utility", but I have no idea what if ANYTHING to change.
My questions: (1) How can I make a backup CD of files I do not wish to lose, and (B) how can I enable Windows XP to operate? I assume I'll need to use the "System Restore" disk to reset everything, but is there any way to recover specific files prior to that step? Can you get onthe computer via Safe Mode?

Do you happen to have another computer handy?

What kind of computer is this? (desktop or laptop)

Also, do you have the Windows CD?The problem unit is a desktop, and the only possible CD's I have are Disks 1 & 2 that say "Quick Restore" (Version 1, 1999), and they came with a different desktop PC (but same brand), which I am on now, in the next room from the looping unit. And I have tried every screen I can jump to during this "cycling", including F8 (Advanced Options Menu), and also can bring up the Recovery Console, but no matter which option I enable on any screen, it returns to the same cycling loop... You can back up the files on the broken computer if you REMOVE the Hard Drive and hook it up on the other computer as a Slave Drive. Then you can access the hard drive in My Computer and copy everything off.

Do you have the Windows XP CD? (can you borrow one)
I don't think those Quick Restore DISCS will do anything. No, I do not have the Windows XP disks. XP came pre-installed. I do have a NEW hard drive, so swapping those out will allow me to be ready to resinstall the OS when I locate a source.
Thanks for all your help on this, CD!!!!!!!The Restore partition contains everything you need to take the machine back to Day One status...i would suggest contacting the manuf. for instructions on how to create the Recovery CD.
Then i would install it on the new drive since if you do it on thew old drive all your data and PROGRAMS will be gone...
Then hook up the old drive as a slave after everything is running properly and rescue your data...

Solve : C: folder question?

Answer»

Hi, I have NEVER posted here, but I thought maybe this SITE could help me figure out what is going on with my computer. I have not been having any problems, but I have about 90 or so random file folders in the C: folder. The all are made up of random letters and numbers and when you open them there is just a text file with what looks to me is jibberish. I was on the phone with tech support a while ago (for something unrelated which has since been solved) and they said that was abnormal but not to delete them if I wasn't having any problems. Can I just delete these? Here is a screenshot of some of them.

Oops I just realized the pic was too blurry, but you get the idea. What directory are they in ? ?
Or are you saying they are in the root of C:\ ?Correct, they are under the C drive in My Computer. Open one of those folders, and post a screenshot.Quote from: computermoron on September 20, 2008, 11:59:51 AM

Oops I just realized the pic was too blurry, but you get the idea.

We'd get a better idea if we could read the folder names and DATES. Maybe you could post it again, properly?
As far, as my eyesight allows, they look like random alphanumeric names, dating back to 2006.They're probably leftovers from updates. Memory tells me this used to happen with Win.2k, a strange looking folder was created during the install of each update.

My solution would be to move them all to a unique folder somewhere and if there is no "file not found" PROBLEM after a couple of weeks delete the lot.

Good luck.

Good advice Dusty ...

They could also be scandisk logs.

Solve : Corrupted Zipped File.?

Answer»

I wanted to format my computer, so I backed up all my important data on DVDs. My most important folder was about 5Gb large, so I zipped the file in order for it to fit on DVD. But now that I have formateed my computer, I cannot open the file. It is telling me that the file is corrupted. Its gona send me mad!!
What can be the problem? Is it because before I used Windows XP SP2 and now I am using SP1 ? cannot think of any other REASON

Thanks BEFOREHAND for any suggestions.First, I would install SP2.

Second, I would try to unzip the file using a PROGRAM called 7-Zip.
http://www.7-zip.org/Zip files do sometimes GET corrupted, usually during copying, burning or downloading. Sometimes (not always!) they can be repaired using software.

You could try this program

http://www.objectrescue.com/products/objectfixzip/

or look here

http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=repair+corrupted+zip+file&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Quote from: SimonA

Is it because before I used Windows XP SP2 and now I am using SP1 ? cannot think of any other reason

There are plenty of other reasons. A bad burn, the disk got damaged or is poor quality, the Zip program had an error while it was CREATING the zip, your DVD drive cannot read the disk, lots of possible reasons. I don't think the change of service pack level is the likeliest cause, or even likely at all.

You could try copying the zip archive over to your hard drive and trying to unzip it from there. If it fails to copy then you know it might be the disk or the drive. You could try the disk on another computer. You do not say if you created just one big zip file (what size?) or if you used split settings to break the zip archive up into parts. Sometimes a big zip file can get corrupted.

You were foolish not to check that the zip file was a good one, and that the burn was good, and that you could get the data back from it before you destroyed the original data.

Solve : My dvd player wont respond,or moniter, mouse,or keyboard !!!!?

I am currently trying to fix my old computer I sold a month ago !! I have a hunch the guy messed with something he should not have !! The moniter turns on but dont respond to computer, the dvd player is not responding at all,the mouse and keyboard arent responding (both USB)! The computer has 2gig ram and duo PROCESSER !! I hear no beeps !! If someone can give me a clue or a hint of what this is let me know !! Also I run Windows XP pro !! I had this computer about a year and had no problems except a couple of months ago I changed the power supply box !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You only need one of these at the end of a sentence ("!") Not EVERY sentence needs one. A period is the usual WAY to end a sentence.

Do hdds, FANS etc spin up? Check all wiring. Try changing power supply. If the guy is claiming it just went wrong, and he did nothing to it, is he asking for his money back? The fans run ! And no he will not get his money back ! Hes had it over a month ! I had no problems with it before ! The wiring looks fine ! I don't have any spare power supply but when my last one went out it didn't do this ! If you sold it to him and it was running at the time then why is it up to you to fix it ? ?
Who knows what he's done to it...
