Solve : Two operating system?

Answer»

I have two operating systems in my laptop. One is Windows XP Home Edition and the other is Windows XP Professional. I want to erase the Home Edition without harming the Professional files.

How can I do this?

Thanks Depends on how it was ORIGINALLY setup and installed so as you can GUESS we'll NEED alot more INFO...I used my desktop operating disk to install it in the laptop. Both the laptop and the desktop are from Gateway.

The problem started when I got about 18 trojan viruses. I did a recovery that came with the laptop. But I thought I lost everything (including the XP Professional OS) but I didn't. Now when I boot my laptop, a boot menu comes up and I have to choose which operating system. I want to eliminate the XP Home Edition. Additionally, I get a message that the hard drive is full. I believe the XP Home Edition is taking me disk space, which I had prior to the viruses attack.

Thanks

Solve : Slow computer, Need assistance please?

Answer»

Hello,

my computer is ridulously SLOW and i am having some trouble keeping some of my programs' data on my computer and not just randomly vanishing. I have a very low amount of DISK space and when i try to delete things, it says no space available. I ha tried numerous GOOGLE searches with very minimal success and believe it is time to take things up a notch. Anyone available for a RA seesion perhaps? email me if interested in helping. I could paypal some money for successful helpers if necessary. Preferrably an admin or mod, someone with some rapport built up on the website if possible. Thank you!

Solve : PCI IRQ Routing Table Error on Boot?

Answer»

On boot, system froze at Black XP loading screen.
On reboot, I noted this error listed in POST
RAM loads fine, then white Win ME screen flashes (I'm running Win XP Pro!) then circles back to POST.
Recent changes to system:
installed PCI eSATA card over a week ago
installed pair of Corsair VS1BG400C3s and removed the old 512 pair over a week ago
installed Adobe CS3 Master Suite 3 days ago
installed drivers for a Kensington micro Bluetooth adapter, and the adapter is in a USB slot.
I have a 1TB LaCie external drive that I have not yet set up to go in one of the the eSATA ports.

When I installed the memory, the system autodetected and everything was running fine, so I've not messed with manual config.

I'm a novice, so I appreciate any help you can provide! Thanks!

a) Did you get an error message? What did it say?

b) Remove all peripherals except mouse and keyboard.

c) I would start by removing the new RAM and re-installing the old. Boot?

d) Leave the old RAM in and remove the eSATA card. Boot?Thank you for your repsponse!
Error message is, "PCI IRQ routing table error 00:03:00"

What I don't understand is where Win ME came from? This system has always had Win XP Pro.

Are PCI IRQ errors always hardware conflicts? Or could it be trying to load the new drivers for the Kensington micro bluetooth adapter?

Thanks...I appreciate your help.

What happened when you tried the above?

If no good after d) try to revert the bluetooth drivers back to the previous version - or delete them.as a side note, it probably wasn't a Win ME boot screen, especially since the BIOS didn't even get to the point of trying to load an OS- it was likely the OEM splash, but it was so quick that you couldn't really see it.

PCI IRQ routing- Go with drm's suggestions, personally sounds like a problem with a PCI card (IE, the eSATA card).Got sidetracked with work...and will get back to this in about an hour.

Thanks for the replies
Will proceed through your list ASAP
I have to just try reseating the RAM -- I'm too nice -- gave the 512 modules to a friend in need, so I can't go back.

Though, I'll be suprised if it's the RAM, as the system was completely stable & fast for over a week and Corsair specifically chose those for my system specs. They run at 2.65 v which is the exact voltage recommended by my motherboard specs. Actually, now that I think of it, the old pair were actually NOT recommended as they ran at 2.75v (both 400 MHz) and Corsair recommended stepping down to 333MHz if I tried to pair them up with the new ones. I chose to not mix modules, but thought I would add a second set of 1GBs after all the other updates were complete.

Re: Win ME -- definitely was/is ME -- the white screen & splash logo are up for 2-3 seconds and if I F8 during boot the black screen says "Windows Millenium".

After trying drm's suggestions if you still get errors completely un-install the SATA card and its drivers.
Do 2 or 3 cold boots (power all the way down and back up)
Then re-install your MBoard drivers...repeat above then re-install the SATA card and it's drivers...
Best of Luck. Thanks for adding comments, Patio -- wanna trade systems? LOL

Okay...just booted with just the mouse/kb and got DMA FATAL ERROR - System Halted.

Is it safe to go ahead and pull the eSATA and try to reboot?1) Make certain that both RAM modules are seated properly.

2) Yes, pull the PCI card.

3) Check that you didn't knock any cables loose!Quote from: drmsucks on September 19, 2008, 05:06:32 PM

Boots to post fatal error screen! -- Should I choose last known config or try normal start?
Last good config.

If you get good boot, disable re-start on errors: Control Panel>System>Advanced Tab>under Startup, click Settings>deselect "Automatically Restart"

Post the exact contents of any error messages.drm...you're awesome!
Good boot and changed settings.
Anything else I should do?

If you don't mind...IYO, should I keep this external and use the USB connect or exchange it for the model with firewire connect? My goal is to set up an external REDUNDANT backup system for large amounts of graphic & video files . I'm also getting low on HD space internally, but didn't see the sense in dropping in new hard drive(s) on an older board/processor. Or, am I thinking about this all wrong? Good work by drm...

Good work by drm...
Post specifics on what exactly your major tasks are on this machine and we can better advise on a solid backup strategy...
Thank you both so very much -- I am very appreciative.
This is my primary desktop for graphic/web design, so I am running the full Adobe CS3 Master Suite, Office XP Pro, Quickbooks.
I used to exclusively use this for business back in '03, but moved and took a hiatus. So, it also has critical family files (photos, tax data, etc.) I'm not ready to drop the bucks for a Duo Core and upgraded MB. So I'm trying to make due for now and upgrade or add a totally new system when the cash flow is there.

OnTheChesapeake: Glad that you are up and running!

As far as backup is concerned, I personally believe that internal drives are more reliable than external drives at this time. (This is a subjective belief based, in large part, by reading others' reviews of external drives. There seem to be a much larger rate of failure than for internal drives. This is hardly a rigorous or quantitative analysis ) Nonetheless, to preserve data on multiple hard drives (internal or external), the object is to reduce the probability of the drives failing AT THE SAME TIME; not the reduction in probability of a particular drive's failure. The probability of failure for a hard drive is 100%; the probability of the failure of two or more hard drives at the same time is very, very low.

Clearly the more drives that contain the same data, the lower the probability of the failure of ALL of them at the same time - but, for my data, 2 drives is plenty: the "source" drive and the "backup" drive. Further, data can be recovered from almost any failed drive, albeit at high cost, so the implementation of a backup strategy really isn't about saving data, but, rather, about saving money and hassle.

Based on what you said about your data, I would use one backup drive. Further, I would do "full" BACKUPS (not incremental) without any type of compression on a regular basis. "Regular basis" is a function of how often, and how much, your data changes. I would also back up certain critical data (tax data, Quickbooks data, kids' pictures, etc.) periodically to CD's or DVD's.

I use Cobian Backup (http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm) and have been very pleased with it. I use version 8 and manually back up every week or so but the software has the capability to back up on a scheduled basis.

Best of luck!

EDIT: Just re-read your question -> I think that using the external drive with USB 2.0 will be fine, but, of course, it's up to you. Firewire 800 would be faster than USB but Firewire 400 will be about the same speed as USB 2.0. Looks like your system has USB 2.0 and Firewire, but I doubt that it has support for Firewire 800. If it does support Firewire 800, and you can swap your drive at no cost, then, I guess that would be the way to go because it would be much faster. Of course my choice would be to return the external drive for a full refund and install another internal drive for backup

Solve : opening in safe mode post virus?

Answer»

My Acer aspire was attacked very quickly by the "AntivirusXP2008" virus. Now I am unable to open in Safe mode as recommended by Norton. After choosing any of the safe mode OPTIONS I get the page of code which either freezes or goes into a blank screen. what can I do?How long does the screen of code appear for? It MAKE TAKE a minute for windows to get into Safe Mode.Longer than 1 minute, what MAY be the reason for that? You're not being patient enough...if safe mode has not been used in awhile or if you are recovering from an infection it can take upwards of 12 minutes...
Try again and grab the Adult Beverage of your CHOICE...Thank you, we shall try. That would be coffee...

Can you all tell me where to find on this computer what I need to know??

"List as much about your computer as possible. This includes operating system (what version of Windows you are using), service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video cards"

Thanks!Knowing your OS helps initially but let's assume you have XP

Just GO straight to .... --> Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system information ... and check out what that tells you.

You may also find some extra info in Device Manager ...... -->Start - settings - control panel - system properties ... select the hardware tab and then click on button for Device Manager... there you can inspect aspects about each item.Or Download and install Everest Home from by clicking Here and install it.
Run it and have it save a TEXT report...
Copy and paste the Computer Summary portion and we'll know everything we need...

P. S. Thanx for asking AHEAD of time ...most skip this IMPORTANT step.

Solve : Computer hard drives?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

Computer 1) is a Aspire AMD Sempron Processor 3000+ 1.81Ghz, 192MB Ram
with windows XP home edition.

Question 1)

Can ANYONE tell me if I can take the hard drive from one computer and put it into another computer.

I PURCHASED another computer and a new hard drive 320Gb
I installed xp pro (everything fine) I then installed XP pro SP2. Now the resolution is terrible. I have tried fixing it and am unable to do anything with it.
When the computer boots up a message Display settings---Your computer's screen resolution and colour depth are currently set to a very low level. You can get a BETTER picture by increasing these settings, to do this click this balloon.
I have done that...............Then it asks do you want windows to automatically correct your screen resolution and colour depth settings? I click yes (nothing happens)
When I go into display properties settings.......Screen resolution is on 640 by 480 pixels and colour quality is lowest (4 bit) You can't change anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This computer is: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.80GHz - 1.79 GHz, 120MB of RAM

I have tried to also install bigpond on this computer, all i get is a grey/black screen, so unable to install.

I not a computer whiz, know a little but obvisiously not enough, any help greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to set one computer up just for the internet and the other for general use.
Problem with computer one is it is running so slow...........
You cannot simply move an XP drive from one machine to the next and expect it to boot properly...this is by design.
Do you have a video card in this machine ? ?
If so re-install the drivers.
If it is onboard video (no card) re-install all your MBoard drivers and re-boot.
Then re-set the settings accordingly.Hi,

I had to re format the drive.
I didn't install windows xp pro SP2 and the resolution is fine, which is what HAPPENED before.
As soon as I installed SP2 resolution shot to pcs so am leaving as is.

I don't intend on CONNECTING this comp to the net or emailing from it.

Many thanks for your help
Tabby I've never seen SP2 wonk out the video settings on a machine...
You may not have needed to format had you try the suggestions but i'm glad you got it running.

Solve : How do I ? Formatting a Aspire Acer AMD Sempron Comp, totally lost.......?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have a Aspire Acer Computer, AMD Sempron (tm) processor 3000+
1.81GHz , 192 MB RAM.
It has windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

I have the FOUR disc's that CAME with the computer. When I insert disc 1 (hoping to go into mode for formatting it just asks what would I like to istall and gives me a list of windows xp items, eg: Drivers and so on.

I want to format this computer as I have been having too many problems with it.

I do have windows XP professional: Should I just use these cds or try with the acer cds??
If so how do I go about it.

Thanks in advance
Tabby You can format the computer if you BOOT from the XP Disc.Using the Xp pro disk, yes

Is it possible to use the acer DISKS to do this? or just wasting time?
Update to xp pro after to formatting the drive.

Thanks
Tabby Not sure.

What exactly are the Acer discs?

I also have a suggestion. GET at least 512mb RAM.System cd, disk one bootable, 2 - 3 & 4 reovery cd.

As I mentioned when I insert disk one it takes me to windows xp, but if you click on it it just gives you a long list to choose from like: drivers, some programs etc.

With the RAM (comp blonde) would that explain why this comp is so slow.
To get the RAM you suggest (many thanks) what do I need to ask for (purchase)

Tabby I would just ask for another stick of RAM (preferably a 1GB stick but 512mb would do fine.)
-Make sure you have an extra slot on your Motherboard though.

As for formatting, can you try the discs. I think you are looking for the Recovery Discs though.

Solve : Laptop Double error?

Answer»

so i have this acer laptop with valuable files,(Yes keep on hitting me with "You should backup your files!) and I don't anything to back up to. here's getting on to the problem.
So it hits me with a black screen that says safe mode and those choices, here's what happens when I use these options:
Safe Mode: Stops at MUP.sys
Safe Mode with networking:*check above*
Recent settings: check below

Okay, if I hit recent settings, It takes me to a blue screen but not a BSOD, that says it wants to check for disk consistency and the file system is FAT32 *check below*

If I choose to skip it, itll freeze for about a good 1 - 2 minutes, then it goes to a real BSOD for about 3 seconds, then restarts.

If I go along with it, itll take like five hours then itll restart still.

I need a SOLUTION to this! When you choose to START in Safe Mode, it should show a bunch of CODE and freeze there for a few minutes. (it can freeze at that screen for about 10 minutes).

How long are you waiting for?

What Operating System?

What happened before this? (downloads, installs, HARDWARE CHANGES, ect....)

Solve : My computer shuts down!?

Answer»

I've been having this problem for a while. Every time I play a game (Half-Life 2 ect.) my computer just shuts down for no particular reason (it's a laptop, btw). I can play for a couple of minutes, then my laptop starts making noices like a vacum cleaner, and then the game starts LAGGING an awful lot, then the sound usually DISAPPEARS for a couple of seconds, then the whole thing just shuts down. It hasn't been like this forever, only for a year now, and I can't remember anything from the past that made my laptop this way. What is the source of this problem, and how do I fix it? Sounds like you have a very dirty fan or one that is going bad. Start by using a vacuum around the air intake and exhaust ports on the laptop. If you are more adventuresome, get a manual and partially disassemble the laptop to get all of the dust and debris out of it. Also look to see if you can replace the fan.

If the vacuuming doesn't solve the problem and you are uncomfortable opening up the laptop - don't. Take it to a reliable repair shop.

Good luck.

EDIT: If you go inside the laptop case, don't use the vacuum, but, rather, use a can of COMPRESSED air to blow AWAY any dust. You may also install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php, and post your laptop temperatures, while idle, and while PLAYING game.

Solve : Problem with internet explorer and outlook express?

Answer»

Running win xp pro w sp1 and I have run updated antivirus and several antimalware programs in the hopes of fixing this problem but its still here. When i am on the net and click on a link to go to another site it starts to go to the other site but stalls at a white, blank page. I cant even get out of it, cant right click and close it, its just stuck there. The only way to get rid of it is by using task mgr and then "end task" feature. Same thing with outlook express, i click on a link to another site the same thing happens as noted above.Sometimes i can cut and paste the link but i cant just click on it, end up with a blank white page that i cant get rid of. Sometimes the system freezes right up. I can move the mouse around but i cant close anything i have open, nothing. I can open new pages and new FOLDERS though. I am running avg a\virus and antimalware, along with spybot and other such progs. Internet is EXPLORER 6 and i am running zone alarm pro, peer guardian. I figure its maybe a setting somewhere but i cant find it or its malware of some type, but cant do any better than that, cant isolate it. Few days ago i tried using "system file checker" but i had to close it because it asked for my win xp pro cd, i put it in both optical drives and i I got a message saying i used the wrong cd. I didnt use the wrong cd as i only have the one. I dont know if this sfc problem relates to the one i am talking about or not. One other thing. Sometimes, the first time i click on internet explorer it wont open, i have to click a few times to get it to open.

Ive changed the batteries on my wireless keyboard and my wireless mouse is working fine as far as i can tell.

Can anyone help me out, please?
.
thanks
It may or may not be part of the issue but when a program like SFC is interrupted at any point it can cause issues...
The XP CD was said to be the wrong one because you have probably ran updates on that machine in the past and for Windows to run SFC properly it is looking for an XP CD with the same service packs you have currently installed.
So let's say you have XP updated to SP2 and your CD was XP with SP1...it won't run.
The versions need to match as well in other words you can't use an XP Home CD to run it on an XP Pro machine...
Find out what Service pak you are up to and try and locate a CD with the same on it. It won't matter if it's someone elses you will still be able to run SFC.

In the meantime post back with what type of internet connection you have and also go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and see if any devices have a yellow EXCLAMATION icon next to them...
Good Luck and Welcome to CH !I was pretty certain i had the right disk. I made 2 slipstreamed versions of my standard win xp pro cd, one was when sp1 only was out and the other, with sp2 in when that came out. Buit i dont recall using them, pretty certain i only added sp1 on top of my setup at the time. I didnt bother adding sp2 to my pc as its now 7 yrs old, been running same win xp pro setup for 7 yrs, and soon time for a new rig. I dont think i have even run any msoft updates since installing sp1. So the sfc should work but it doesnt.

Still, its very very annoying using this rig while i am building my new one, please i will keep this one for other use and i figure i MIGHT just as well learn for the next time or to help someone else out when it happens to them, thats why i posted this problem.

I have CABLE if thats what you mean by internet connection, just a simple cable connection, no network or wireless.
There are no issues showing in dev mgr.
I havent checked event viewer, didnt think of it til just now, will report on that.

thanks

Personally i'd install SP2...it was a major OS upgrade not just a security patch as some would lead you to believe...Okay, i was thinking about this and decided to install direct x 9 and that seems to have worked. It looks like case solved but its smart to wait a bit.
I will post later today if all is well or not.

Solve : What to undo and how??

Hi ! I have a PC that recently someone just install the antivirus PC tools. Then this PERSON made a scan and put the viruses in quarentine. It was ALREADY late cause the antivirus was restarting the PC and I made the choice to unistall it. I recently install AVG free edition. But still havent made anything with this one. Right now Im in safe mode cause the last thing I actually did was turn on the automatic updates on. I did some updates even the updates made some removal of malware. But then it happen I recieve an update to install Service Pack 3 from winXP home edition. I install this one and restart. It didnt HELP to notice can couldnt load the windows and all I can do now is get to the BOOT.INI. Here I made the choice to go to safe mode with networking.
I understand I need help to KEEP cleaning the PC and return to normal windows. I also would like to know if is posible to undo the update of service pac 3 or know if is not necesary. Are you saying you have two antivirus programs installed on your computer?Yeah, your post is very unclear, but start with uninstalling SP3 through Add\Remove. No service pack should be installed on not working well computer.I made a sistem recovery and everything is just fine now. the service pack was uninstalled. I do need to know now. How can I know witch DLL my PC are missing?
Is there a way?
What I said first was that the computer had install an antivirus but I unistall it. I did install another one and make sure it was just one antivirus. Now I just wanna make sure that it wont give me messages while working on it. If you did a system recovery you aren't missing any .dll's...
Your follow up post is still a bit unclear.
What is not working properly ? ?

Up to the point where the Windows desk top begins to appear it is very slow. After that, things seem normal.

Solve : Need help fixing this old laptop?

Answer»

So, I'm trying to FIX up my friend's family's laptop. I didn't have the sense earlier when I turned it on to check out the specifications, and I turned it off. When I turn it back on, I get a message. Here are the specifications of what I believe it is.

OS: XP Pro
Model: ACER Aspire 1350
HDD: I'm GUESSING 40gb, has some valuable files THAT CAN'T BE LOST.
Age: about anywhere from 3 - 5 years old
Battery: 3 cell probably, "IT"s(pun) fricking weak!

Well, now on to the problem.
I Get this black screen thats common when you shut down improperly, (you know boot from DOS, recent settings etc.) I choose recent settings and it XP loads. Then it brings up an XP Blue screen (not a BSOD) saying I have a incosistent disk drive. It checks it (if I choose to not pass it) It'll take about 5 hours. As I was watching the end, it just restarts! The same problem HAPPENS if I skip the Check also.
Back in the Black choice screen, I choose DOS and it loads all the way to MUP.sys then stops.

I'm in trouble here, But i''ve already found a way to back it up. Pushing that aside, Is there anything I can do to return or at least fix it WITHOUT getting a new system or laptop? Any solutions are greatly appreciated.Have you tried safe mode?More info: it reaches a blue screen, but note a BSOD it only stays on for a few seconds until it shuts it self off.

here is what it says in the time i can read it

systemroot/System32/config/Security,
File is absent, lost, or corrupted.

also, booting in Safe mode doesn't work, it stops at MUP.SYS
and The main problem, Checking Disk For Consistenct C:
The file system is FAT32

hope that helps clear up more things.Quote from: Goldenlink12 on September 18, 2008, 04:10:14 PM

hope that helps clear up more things.

Not for me, but someone else might be able to help you. Good LUCK.

Solve : XP install help?

Answer» HEY all,

I've managed to lay my grubby mits on a very small laptop from work. It has no OS on it and no CD/DVD driver either. It does however have a few USB ports.

Now, I've followed a few of the many sites detailing how to install XP from a USB key but I KEEP getting stuck.

I've got a USB key that boots the latop to a DOS prompt and it is large enough to hold the bootup files and the i386 xp folder on.

The USB key is formatted as FAT32 and the HDD in the laptop is in 2 partions. Ones a 3GB recovery partion (it's from the old TOSH laptop i had) and the other is a empty 75GB NTFS drive.

When I boot, I get to a (C:\) DOS prompt which holds all the USB DATA. If I try to access A:\ it tells me the 'drive isn't ready, abort, ignore or FAIL'. I've also tried all the different drive letters it could be but no joy.

Why can't I access the NTFS dirve?? I'd like to copy the i386 folder to it and then run winnt.exe to start the xp installation.

Can anyone help???

Cheers in ADVANCE!

Solve : \system32\hal.dll?

Answer»

I cannot reinstall windows because of this file. it says that it is missing or corrupted. that is the screen that it comes to and i can't get any further. the COMPUTER did not come with any discs. i did make back-ups for my drivers and applications. someone please help. thank you in advancewell do u want to reinstall windows? how are u trying to reinstall it?I see my buddy HAL is GIVING you a hard time.

Hardware Abstraction Layer: When you perform an in-place upgrade, or a re-installation of Windows XP, if the Setup program detects that you have an unsupported HAL installed for your computer type, and the Setup program determines that a HAL that supports that computer type must be installed, it installs the correct HAL. When this issue occurs, the HAL is changed from what was previously installed.

For more information: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299340so how do i go about fixing this?i am tryng to reinstall xp.

Not knowing your model number I can only give you general information.

Did you fdisk the drive? If not you most likely have a restoration partition on the drive. You have to find out what key to press (F11, 10, 2) during reboot.

If you used fdisk and repartitioned the drive you will have to get a recovery CD. I don't know if emachines offers them as I work mostly on Dell, ACER, Compaq/HP, GATEWAY. All the manufactures I have mentioned at one time or another offered a recovery CD (with full OS install on it) for a small fee of 25 to 35 (compare that to 100+ for Windows XP Home) The few emachines I have worked didn't require partitioning and formatting. I have included the link for your convenience http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html Folks he is trying to install Windows Media Center from a drive that has WMC installed on it...
We know this cannot be done...
He has no WMC CD and has been advised he needs one.

Here is the Other Topic. That's it.

Solve : Cannot Complete Windows XP Pro Start-up Process on HP Laptop?

Answer»

Hello and Thank You,
I am having trouble with my HP laptop that runs a Windows XP Pro Operating System. All I did was a simple restart and now I cannot access my COMPUTER. It will boot up fine and begins to go threw its normal start up process, the 1st Microsoft Windows XP screen appears (with black background and blue strobe under logo) that step is completed without problems or delay. It's the following step that is can't seem to get past. When it reaches the 2ND Microsoft Windows XP screen (with two tone blue background color, and smaller logo) it won't go any further. There is no warning or instruction of any kind, my computer doesn't freeze, it doesn't make any additional/strange sounds, the processing/thinking indicator is not blinking, my mouse still works without hesitation or delay on both screens. (I am using my laptop plus 1 additional monitor) No “Blue Screen Of Death” or error codes, it just will not go any further. I keep my computers updated and defragged, I always run disk cleanup and delete cookies. I installed SERVICE Pack 3 for XP pro. without any issues during installation. Although it has been running a little slow and freezing up randomly since I installed the service pack. (only for 10 to 30 seconds not to the point of reboot) That was about 10 days ago. I run explorer version 7. I have been updating FIREFOX on a regular basis, but I have refused to install FireFox version 3 several times in the past two weeks. FireFox says my Real Player Internet Down loader Add-On will stop working, so I keep telling it to remind me later. I can't see how that could do this.
·NOTE* I had just installed several updates from Microsoft but none that required a restart and none failed to install. It was my choice to restart my computer not a prompt by the system. Just before I restarted it was running fine no freezing or odd behavior.
·NOTE* If I let it reach the 2ND Windows XP screen I cannot power down or access the task manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del It will only power down if I press and hold the power button manually.
·NOTE* Time doesn't seem to make a difference or help in any way. I run both my laptop and PC on one desk so I have my laptop powered up and I am looking at it right now. I have had this start up screen up for hours and it still allows me to move the mouse freely and doesn't give me any indication that it's attempting to process any information. It just won't go any further.
·NOTE*Below I have listed what I am working with and what I have tried so far, please help if you can. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

What I have tried so far is:
·I tried to use a program called "GO BACK" by Roxio, that usually works great, but it told me that there was no safe time to revert my hard drive back to. That was the first time I have ever seen that message in 5 years of using Go Back on 3 different computers.
·I tried to boot from my Norton System Works CD and it told me I had to disable the "Go Back" program I had running. So I did that, and then rebooted from the Norton disk and was able to run an Anti-Virus scan. The scan returned clean, no viruses were detected.
·I Started in Safe Mode but when I reached the 2ND Windows XP screen (with Two-Tone Blue background) it would not go any further, just like before.
·I have since tried all the other choices offered from the F8 DOS (Safe Mode) screen, Everything I try stops at the same point.
·What do I do Please Help!!!

Desperately In Need Of Help
Macks Powerzs
Another great/informative post.

When you get to the two-tone screen, can you see the mouse?

Also, do you by any chance have the Windows XP Pro CD?Yes I can see and even move the pointer with my mouse without any problems.

I know it's around here somewhere but I can't find my windows XP Pro Cd anywhere, I did purchase XP Pro software separately and I have registered it with Microsoft. I might have a reinstall CD, will that work?

What do I do if I can't find the CD?

Do you think Microsoft will send me a new XP Pro CD since I registered my product? Quote

Do you think Microsoft will send me a new XP Pro CD since I registered my product?
I'm actually not sure.
You can ask them via Customer Support and explain your situation.

It will have to be the Windows XP CD (you can borrow one from a friend.)

Once you have it, I suggest performing a Repair Install:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmAlright I know someone with an XP Pro Cd that will let me borrow it to perform a repair.

Will I be able to save any of my personal info? I have so much stuff on this machine, 20+ GB of music, and years of work files.

What other options do I have if I cannot get a XP Pro CD?
Can I get anything off the HD?

BTW Have you ever heard of anything like this I couldn't find any posts that said thay had this problem? Isn't it odd, no error codes, no freezing up, no safe mode access. What the *censored* did I do?
Do you think it was service pack 3?
Is it just a windows thing? I recall a similar situation a while back (don't remember the link) but the member did mention installing Service Pack 3 recently before the problem, but we cannot jump to any conclusions just yet.

You will need the Windows XP Pro CD to perform the repair install. It will not remove any of your personal files, don't worry.

If you want to back your files up, you can remove the current Hard Drive and hook it up to another computer as a Slave Drive and copy over the files on the other computer.
(I can give you more details if you wish to do this)Quote
I recall a similar situation a while back (don't remember the link) but the member did mention installing Service Pack 3 recently before the problem, but we cannot jump to any conclusions just yet.

If he does that then there will be no chance for a Repair Install as the CD would have to be slipstreamed to include SP3....an SP2 XP CD would be rejected as not matching...

But let's wait for more info on the matter.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on September 18, 2008, 05:23:37 AM

Yes please tell me more! The computer I am sending this message from is sharing a desk with my Laptop so I hook it up right here and copy over the files. But how? I didn't know a HD from a laptop could be hooked up as a slave drive in a PC. Does it attach to the same RIBBON that I used to when I put a 2nd HD in my PC?

Any info or websites would be much appreciated, Thanks

Also I do have a external HD if I hooked that up to my Laptop could I boot from it and then transfer the files onto the external drive? Is that possible I don't think my external HD has an operating system on it I have only used it for storage purposes. Crap I think I just answered my own question, let me guess I could install a OS onto my External HD but I need the XP Pro CD right?

The other thing is that my PC that I am currently using is running 2000 Pro will it still work to access the HD from my laptop? Or do I need to hook it up to a PC/laptop that's running XP pro?

Thank You For Any Advice/Help you hav e to offer

First grab one of these:

Laptop 2.5" HDD to IDE connector...about 8 or 10 Bucks...available at any PC store.
This will enable you to hook up the laptop drive to the desktop.

There are no jumpers on most laptop drives so it will be recognised as a slave drive and will show up in Windows Explorer as the next available drive letter...

Note: Just to be safe i would run all protection program scans available on the desktop machine on the laptop drive just so you don't carry an infection from one drive to another.

As to the external drive question ...it is a ton of work to get an external drive to be bootable with an OS other than a flavor of Linux so i'd suggest scratch that idea.

Third Win2K Pro will read any XP files and vice versa for XP to Win2K...
Take your time and Good Luck.
Let us know.

BTW...Welcome Aboard !

Solve : Plesae help! cant log in either normal or safe mode...?

Answer»

I'm desperate to know what going on with my PC. I don't know what happened with it, he last time I used it everything is fine. Today when I try to log in, it start logging me off right AWAY. I cant even get in using the safe mode. I want know how to fix it or is ther any way to fix this..Please help me. My PC is E-machine with window XP.. Thanks in Advance...How far do you get in the boot-up process? Can you ACTUALLY get to the boot options screen?
Does anything show up at all as you are BOOTING your computer?
Do you hear any beeps? If so, can you describe them?
Have you made any hardware or software changes to your computer recently?
And how old is this computer? eMachines are known for using substandard parts and don't have a very long lifespan. My PC is almost 3 years old and I'm the only one using it. I remember I updated my the XP program because it keeps popping that it needed to be updated. I also download some of my scrap booking files that day. My virus protection has expired few week ago an I have not updated it. There is no beep sound when I log in expect for the NORMAL Microsoft start up sound. It takes my to the usual logging screen that I usually place my password to log in. But every time I log in, it logs me off right away by it self. I try the safe mode and it do the same thing. Evrything is normal when I start my PC except I cannot log in at all.. Okay, so the computer does boot up, it just won't let you login. Gotcha.

Instead of Safe Mode, have you tried using Last Known Good Configuration? What happens?
Also, do you have an original Windows CD?I have not tired anything else other than trying the safe mode because i know nothing about it. Plus I'm scared that I might do something wrong that might cause more problem. Yeah I still have the original Window CD. It shouldn't cause any problems. You can enter this mode the same way you enter Safe Mode. But instead of selecting Safe Mode, select Last Known Good Configuration. Let us know if there are any changes. You might also be able to repair windows using the CD's repair function. That might be something you want to try. Yes, this is one thing we will want to eventually try, but because lizapep isn't very familiar with the technical aspects of computers, we should try to take this one step at a time.Guys I tired the last configuration mode this morning but it didnt help at all. It still knocks me off right away.. Everything is still the same.. Is there any other way?First, let's see if you can get into the Recovery Console. Insert your Windows CD and follow the instructions on this page, under the heading How to use the Recovery Console:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

You can ignore step 5 for now. I just want to see if you can gain access. If not, then a repair install may be in order, unless you have any tech-savvy friends who could help slave your drive for you...I am wondering, did you upgrade to windows xp, install clean copy of windows xp or did you buy the computer with windows xp preloaded already?Quote from: mcxeb52! on August 21, 2008, 11:29:40 PM
I am wondering, did you upgrade to windows xp, install clean copy of windows xp or did you buy the computer with windows xp preloaded already?

I bought my PC with Window XP on it already. Before my PC act up like this I recently updated the XP becuse there's a notice that it keep popping up saying that my it needed to be updated. I just click update and it restart my PC. The problem I was not able to get in anymore. I'm to scraed to used the system recovery CD because I might loss all of my impotant photos.. this is a desktop? Do you have a second computer handy? If you did, I would just take your important hard drive and use second computer to save all the photos off it and then put the hard drive back to MAIN computer to continue with fixing it.

that's only if you had a second computer on hand.Guys thansk you so much for the help..Anway i was able to fix my PC "thanks to you all!!".. I have one more question though.. I was able to save all of my photos to my external hard drive and used System Recovery CD and delete evrything on my PC..My question is why my PC is running a bit slow and fronze at times "especailly last night"..Is ther anything you can advice me to fix this issue?

Solve : file transfer issues with open office?

Answer»

my old computer (e machine) fried; I bought a new Dell Vostro 200. Most of my data was on floppy discs on Microsoft Word. My new computer has CD drive with OPEN OFFICE. I understand I will need an external floppy drive to transfer the data, but how will Word READ to open office? I need to know the best WAY to do this. I could install new Word software, and I am used to Word, but if Open Office is better for my purpose I suppose I could get used to it (I'm an old guy and don't take change all that well).

I have Windows XP, 1.20 ghz, 1.99 gb ram

Tony
I'm in complete sympathy with "don't take change that well."

Open Office Writer (the word processor) is similar to but different from MS Word. It will almost assuredly open your old Word files but the interface and use of the program will be slightly different.

Do you have the install disks or CD for the Word program that you've been using? What version of Word is it?Depends on your documents. I know from experience when OpenOffice opens Word documents it doesn't always get the formatting right and likewise when Word opens a DOC file created in OpenOffice.

Interface-wise, they're really not all that different. As for features, OpenOffice is impressive, but doesn't have as many features as Word does.

If you're really not interested in changing, I'd just stick with Word.Quote from: quaxo on September 19, 2008, 10:58:08 AM

Interface-wise, they're really not all that different.
That's probably the biggest problem getting used to OOo

If the OP has to upgrade several versions of Word, he will find similar "same but different" differences between a new Word and his old one.

His best solution is to install the version that he is used to, but it MAY have been included on his old system and he has no disks. Thanks, people

I realized after I sent the note that I should have my old Word disk. I do, but I can't find it. I'll keep looking, and may have to buy new Word software.

I've been using computers since the mid-eighties, and still don't know what I'm doing. Getting old ain't for sissies.

Solve : Sound driver problems, can anyone help??

Answer»

Hey guys, I'm a long time user of this site, but for the first time I've had to venture into these forums.

Anyway, I have a rather aged Packard Bell IMedia 1408. It's been on it's LAST legs for a while, but thanks to a reformat here and a RAM upgrade there, it's still going strong. I now need the computer exclusively for study though, so I've reformatted it and only installed vital programs so I can get that final year out of it.

The reformat went fine and I decided to listen to some music whilst I was installing MS Office only to discover there is no audio output from my PC.

I've installed the latest sound driver, installed the latest chipset and installed the latest windows update, with a reboot after each. I've also gone into device manager to find there are no conflicts. Also, when I go into system infomation, it says there isn't even a sound card. There's a sound card (it's one of those which are integrated into the motherboard and it has the code "P35-153-11Z9" on it, which brings no useful results up on Google. It's worth mentioning that the sound was working perfectly before the reformat.

Now I really don't need to re-reformat it, use a system restore point or anything like that as I don't fancy losing the 6ish hours of time I've invested in it since then. I can definetly get by without sound, but it's something which will bug me immensley until I can fix it.

I'm running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2. Service Pack 3 will be installed tomorrow, but I can't see how that would solve the sound problem

Any ideas?

CheersAre you sure you have the speakers plugged into the right port?
Have you tried a different set of speakers? The speakers are in the right port, and just for the sake of being thorough, I ac tually checked them in the wrong ports as well. The speakers have power going to them, but I haven't actually tried another set. However, my headphones don't work either, but they're fine with my MP3 player.

I'm pretty sure the problem is the fact that my computer doesn't seem to think it has a sound card.

And no, my volume isn't muted or anything like that

How did you know what sound driver should be installed, since no sound card is listed in Device Manager?

Also...

Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in TEXT file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under line Debug - PCI If you go onto the Packard Bell Support site and input the computer's serial or part number, you get a spec of the models hardware when shipped and the latest drivers for those parts. As it still has the original motherboard/integrated sound card, I knew which driver to install, and the latest version was from late 2006

Is this the device, you installed driver for?Aaa, I obviously installed the wrong driver.

However, whenever I try to install the SiS 7012 driver, it enters the setup and then says "cannot install driver"

If it makes a difference, I now have Service Pack 2 installed, turned out I hadn't done that when I postedHey

I've tried to install both the latest version of the sound driver and the version from roughly when I bought the PC, but still have no success

I'm out of ideas Did you try this driver: HEREYes

"Fail to install audio driver for Windows XP
Setup will exit."You know, I think, your on-board sound chip is dead. I have no other explanation.I did think that, but it was working absolutely fine moments before I reformatted it.

Anyway, what's the solution now? I'm guessing I BUY a new sound card and use that? I ask because it's currently an integrated sound card so I can't remove it and I don't know if installing a new sound card in one of the PCI slots will cause a conflict or somethingI can't assure you 100%, it's dead, but it looks like.
You buy real sound card (if you don't need anything fancy, they're pretty cheap), you install it, and it should automatically disable on-board sound chip. As ALWAYS, read manual.

actually, i have been reading Mercenaries 2 WIF README and they say that the game would run much better on a x64 system. So i guess it is worth a shot for this game

Solve : Load a External Drive 'as' Removable Storage?

Answer»

sorry if my grammar isn't perfect, I'm actually afrikaans.

My prob: At work; connecting my external hard drive makes in only readable (domain permissions I presume), but a flash disc works perfectly...

So now I'm trying to make my external HDD a Flash Disc.
I don't have rights to view Disc Management and I don't have any rights to update drivers.

Does anyone have an idea how I can make the drive removable so that I can get read&write access via a script or setting or even an application? Any help would be very much appreciated.

Oja, Windows XP SP2Ask your supervisor for permission to copy data to the drive. Your IT guy should be able to assist you with it.I'm a consultant at a CLIENT (bank), I'll have to arrange a couple of meetings for access ;P and not sure if they would approve...You work at a bank?

What are you trying to copy to that drive?

Sorry if I sound suspicious, but I've seen people post here that were trying to do illegal things.Quote from: Galahad

not sure if they would approve...

Then don't do it! The whole point about security procedures set by EMPLOYERS is that they are 1. there for a reason and 2. there to be followed! Routine avoidance of important security or safety procedures BREEDS laxity and leads to all kinds of problems. When I worked in a (UK) regulated financial environment, we weren't even allowed to bring pen drives or mobile phones into the workplace. Also this forum has a policy of not helping with such queries. Others please note. I think we just (temporarily) foiled a bank robbery. LOL, o noes!

What is the diff if I use a 2GB flash disc to copy my photos, pics, MUSIC, etc to the PC or if I use a 40GB drive?
Geez, is it that tough to say "we don't know"

They monitor closely deviced that go in and out of the buildings/network and they don't mind users putting personal stuff on their DOCUMENT folders and flash discs. The prob is; because the external drive is picked up as an drives, makes it fall under the HDD category that doesn't allow admin rights.

I'm not trying to hack security permissions, just change the drive 'type'Again you need to speak with the Bank's IT people or Manager.

Solve : XP Installation Problems?

Answer»

I already got this problem fixed..... There was no problem with the Hard Drive. I got Windows 98 installed and then ran Windows XP once 98 was installed. I did a BOOT with FDISK, deleted all partitions and made a single primary partition. After that I restarted the computer and ran FORMAT. I FORMATTED the C: drive making it usable. I installed Windows 98 off of the CD while I was in DOS. It installed fine. I then ran the installation for XP while in Windows 98. I only had 1 issue installing XP which was after it converted to NTFS, a windows file was missing and I ended up having to reformat and install 98 again. I left it on FAT the next time when I was installing XP again and it installed no problem. I got everything updated on it and it works fine. It only has an issue with the battery. It shows the battery in Device Manager, but it doesn't want to find the battery when booting up or when you unplug the AC Adapter while it's running, it'll shut down. I no longer have to WORK on it as it was sold 2 days after I got it running.

Solve : Changing the background picture on Startup?

Answer»

When the computer is starting up just after the welcome screen, a generic windows XP background appears along with an icon from the computer store I PURCHASED my PC from. A few seconds later it has my regular desktop background which I know can be altered by right clicking, properties, then going to desktop tab and finding an alternate picture.

Can someone TELL me how I am able to get it so the picture that appears temporarily while loading up, is my normal desktop picture that appears after everything has LOADED and is not the stupid one the computer shop has installed with their logo? The one that is appearing temporarily is the same one that was originally installed untill I changed it by following the steps I said above.

If you have anything I can try to fix this annoying issue I'd APPRECIATE you REPLYING.

Solve : vedio joining problem?

Answer»

haii friends

recently i have downloaded one dvd quality movie(.avi extension) from adrive.com. I t contain 12 parts of size 100 mb each. The problem is , only the first part of the 12 is playing, and remaining are not. I have tried some one VEDIO joining sw bt it is not working. So pls suggest me a way to play entire the movie. Here's what I've LEARNED from years of downloading movie FILES:

If they are .rar files, for example, if the sections end in " part01.rar, part02.rar, part03.rar " etc., you need a program called WinRar. It will join the parts into one Mpeg file.

If they are .avi files, for example, if the sections end in " avi.001, avi.002, avi.003", then you will need a program like HiSplit. It splits or joins .avi files into one Avi movie file.

If they end in .mov, they will play individually, but you will need a program like SuperVideoJoiner to string them together. What are the EXTENSIONS of those partial files?Quote

Solve : Problem With Sound in XP as well as Vista?

Answer»

Here is my computer specifications:

Operating Systems: Dual boot, Vista SP2 32 bit, XP Prof SP3 32 bit
Motherboard: Intel DG31PR
Processor: Intel Core2Duo 2.8G.Hz E7400
RAM: 2 GB
Drivers: All drivers are completely updated. (Including BIOS)
Audio Drivers Version: Realtek High Definition Audio Drivers Ver 6.0.1.5939

I am using the sound card which is on built with DG31PR mother board.

Here is my PROBLEM:

When I enable "High Definition Front Panel Audio" in BIOS,

I can hear sound in vista, but it was not proper sound. It was some thing like quality has reduced or similar to that sound is coming from a well.

Sound is not working in XP, eventhough every thing is good to visual. No problem was detected.

When I disable "High Definition Front Panel Audio" in BIOS,

Now the case reversed, Vista had no sound and XP has some sound which is not a good quality one.

Both Operating Systems are newly installed.
I tried all the possibilities....
Reinstalled drivers.
Tried by removing front panel to motherboard.

Here is some other FACTS I observed:
Speakers are working good (intex speakers 4.1 channel, even it was 4.1, it has only one jack to attach with CPU)
In any case, the audio was not good, it was something buzzing and low quality audio.
Always a buzzy sound from speakers which was not observed when I connected the same speakers to laptop.

Do u know why it was happened and what should I do in order to get a proper sound from both OS.

Thank you.

Adding More Information:

In any case, Realtek Sound Manager not showing speaker jack was connected to back panel, instead it was showing that there is two jacks connected to front panel (mic and speaker).QUOTE from: TheGodWings on October 17, 2009, 12:12:43 PM

Where is what?how do I (Run a full scan with your anti virus utility. Also download and run a scan with MalwareBytes (do both, not one or the other) I can't find the utility If you don't have an anti virus utility installed, that's your FIRST PROBLEM. You should not run a system without a good AV running at all times.

You can download Avira or Avast for free (use google). Ditto Malware Bytes (which is NOT a replacement for an anti virus utility, it's an anti malware utility I'd like you to use to run an additional scan).

If all this is really that difficult for you I suggest you ask someone more familiar with computers to help you. This is really pretty basic stuff and you do need to have an AV installed.

Solve : Windows Genuine Advantage, -Your Opinion.?

Answer» Windows Genuine Advantage is still out there.
The scenario is something we saw again yesterday.
Somebody that has had an old PC that was not used for awhile, he was asked if he wants updates. He gets all the updates and get the WGA warning and is told to buy a new XP or call MS and beg forgiveness.
But Windows XP is no longer supported by MS.
Yet the retail price is still $149.
If he buys it, he has have a product that is at end of life.
So what is the advantage? Relief of a possible guilt trip?
He says that he believed the copy was legit at the time or purchase, but never keep the invoice.
Does that matter?
Do you feel sorry for MS because of all the money they lost?
Did they LOSE money?
Is it wrong to remove the WGA nag?
Why do they still have this thing?
Or is it pointless to even talk about this anymore?

Note to moderator, please correct errors in my post.
OK...i will...

XP support is live until 2014...so that was innaccurate...

2nd) if it is in FACT a legit XP install all he has to do is call the Mothership on their #800 and they will verify it and issue a new product KEY if need be...

3rd) no invoice is neccessary...they can run a 10 second scan and determine this.

4th) I've never felt sorry for MS.

5th) They haven't lost money.

6th) Yes it would be wrong to circumvent the WGA...this is considered piracy.

7th) Because they can.

8th) That only/he you can determine

Keep in mind that the WGA has had issues and has actually reported valid installs as invalid...he has all the tools to jump thru those HOOPS and get it fixed...

Are you getting any IMFORMATION at all are is it when you click on the link nothing happens are does it just go into a white screen do you even get anykind of error like a 404 error with my computer some websight won't work are are very slow with some web brownsers than another have you tried to delete your web browser and reload it if so try another and if that don't work try a web proxy if that works i would believe you were booted for a reason but they will usually tell that you that you are your ip was banned to use that websight so if the proxy works you most likely have being banned for a reason.

if that doesn't work i would get ccleaner delete all internet data and everything else you don't want do some virus and malware scans i would reccomend
superantispyware and avira and them malwarebytes and hijack this and clean up your computer sometimes that will helpThere is an instant change of screen to "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page", making me think the block is on my own computetWhat protection apps are installed on your machine ? ?out of date NortonSounds like it maybe a virus i don't know why it would want to block a gambling sight i had a antivirus profram i noticed it was at the bottum right of the screen i didn't download it so i clicked on it and you had so SIGN up and give credit card imformation i thought it was a scam diffenittly after i opened up my browser and it wasn't WORKING half the TIME it said internet explorer couldn't be displayed but it wasn't the normal look it looked fake i managed to get to google tried to download some kind of anti virus but nothing quit went on a few minutes later a p--- sight was now the home page it was a scam by the antivirus i think to make me want to buy there product i managed to get antimalare bytes to run and it got rid of it i would also sugjest running avira are superantispyware with hijack thisThanks.
I accept it is probably a virus.
My computer is running fine, except for this one complaint.
I am financially broke at the moment.
When I have more money I will buy an anti-viral update. No need there are great free ones to download avira and superantispyware and malwarebytes there free i'ts not even a trial you could try a trial of avg are something else but i think some of the free ones are just as good as the paid ones

Solve : Mouse moves itself!?

Answer»

I have been having problem with my mouse, it moves itself. This happens when I download a particular file (Comodo firewall or just MICROSOFT mouse drivers) or when I update McAfee virus software. I have even uninstalled McAfee Security Suit and replaced it with Avast. McAfee is a memory hog! I have tried three different optical mice: Two Logitech, one with a cord and the other cordless and one Microsoft comfort 3000 with a cord. I have tried cleaning the optics. I have replaced the mouse pad, uninstall and reinstall the drivers in the device manager. I have scanned my PC for viruses with McAfee Security Suit, Trend Micro house call and Kaspersky and nothing. I do have a KVM switch for my other computers, so I hooked up the USB mouse directly to my computer and nothing. What I have not done is uninstall, in the device manager, all the devices under Human Interface Devices, plus the Mouse driver, which is the only one there. Then boot up and reinstall and update the drivers. In the back of my mind am thinking it might be the power unit which is a 600W OCZ with 72 amps Well on Monday I will be replacing the Motherboard with a Gigabyte, the CPU with AMD Phenom 2 X2 550 BE and the Memory with Corsair 6400C5C 4GB. I want to keep the same operating system, but if I have the same problem with the mouse I might as well grab one of my fresh images and install that. Then change the Mass Storage CONTROLLER to the default settings, so I don’t get the BSOD when I boot from the new hardware. I will not be fooling with the Hardware abstraction Layer. Or I could transfer the Windows XP Activation Information on to a clean install. Does anyone have any advice here?

I presently have on this computer:
Windows XP
MSI K8N Neo Platinum Motherboard 754 socket.
AMD Athlon 3200+ CPU – Frequency is 2.2GHz
1.5GB Corsair memory CAS 2.5
NX6600GT-VTD128

The most common problem is a wireless mouse.
Have you tried it with not wireless mouse?
I mean just remove it and use a standard or USB mousse.
I have never had to clean an optical mouse.
Could it be that the mousepad or desk has a pattern that 'tricks' the mouse into mimicking movements? I don't use a mouespad and have noticed the mouse moving across the screen LEAVING me wondering "*censored*?", then I realize the pattern on my desk. The same thing happened with other mouses, even on another computer it did the same.Because of the present threat of the swine flu...
Always have a pad under your mouse! YES, I mentioned that I have tried three different mice one being wireless and the other two that I tried were WIRED mice. I also mentioned that I have tried different mouse pads. I usually prefer dark colored mouse pads.

Thank you for the input

Solve : pxe-e61 media test failure check cable?

Answer»

Hello,

I am the owner of a Toshiba Satellite A215-S5837. I have only had it for a little over a year.

I got a virus on my computer the other day, which DISABLED all of my anti-virus software, and the ability to download any new software. This left me no choice but to back up all of my files onto my external hardrive, and RESTART my system completely. I inserted the recovery CD that came with my computer, choosing to delete all files from my computer, waiting for over an hour for this process, and restarting my computer.

When I restarted my computer, the main "Toshiba" screen popped up, and then it took me to a screen that said:

"Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8100E/8101E Fast Ethernet Network Adapter v1.02 (060529)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, CHECK cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE Rom"

This repeats over and over again. I have gone to google, searched for answers to my problem, went through about 5 pages with no solutions. I pressed F2 when it first booted up, went to "boot" and the boot order is in the order that everyone tells you to have it in: HDD, CD/DVD, FDD, LAN. Here's a question that I might already know the answer to, but just want your opinions: would removing and reinserting the battery & hard drive help my problem at all?

I am currently on my Mom's computer, as I cannot get past the "Media Test failure" error messages, so if you send me any links to software I should download on my other computer, I won't be able to access it. That's an obvious statement, but that's what those 5 page of links on google seemed to result in...

Hoping to hear some responses throughout the day...and wanting to get this fixed ASAP...the new Sims 3 is out today...and my copy is on it's way...heh. :)Thanks for any help you may provide!! I'm not super amazing at fixing computers as most of you seem to be, thus...my plea for help. Go to BIOS. Make sure, that the boot order reads: floppy, CD, HD
Disable Boot from Network (wording is different on every machine, may say Integrated NIC, Network, PXE-xxxxxxx)Yeah, that didn't work... still getting the same message. Disabled LAN and reordered boot. Still nothing.Does the error still pop-up?Unfortunately, yes.Last time i saw this on a Toshiba it was a hard drive failure...Quote from: patio on June 02, 2009, 12:07:39 PM

Last time i saw this on a Toshiba it was a hard drive failure...

Eh, that's what I was afraid of...I really dislike those Toshibas...I'm not too fond of them myself, either right now, Broni. I'm hoping to take it into Geek Squad at Best Buy this afternoon. It always seems that you just approach their desk, they press three BUTTONS, and everything is working properly. I'm hoping when my Mom bought this computer for me that she got a service plan with it, and if so, I can get a new hard drive at no charge. That would be great. Is it still under warranty?I would guess so, but I'm not 100% sure. Like I said, my Mom bought the computer, and she knows more than I ever will about what it's under.I still have a Toshiba Satellite from 1996 going strong.

Although, I suppose that's little consolation...Quote from: klkastle on June 02, 2009, 04:49:05 AM

klkastle,
Have you tried cleaning the CD or using a laser lens cleaner on the CD drive?
Do that and try the system recovery again.I just had the same problem with my Toshiba, here is what I did, again my problem drove me nuts,no one could answer it ,I guess I got lucky first I made a burned copy of the instalation disc that came with the computer, then I used the copys to reinstall in computer, then I went into the bios and changed it so that cd/dvd was the top pick and had the little white flag next to it hit f-10 on mine to save it and then exieted, shut down computer and did a restart after about 1 minute wait ,viola...it started up and reloaded the instaltion ....all is working fine again I know I am probebly not very good at explaing things, but I did have exactly the same problem as you and thought after so many failures that it must be the hard drive, but it wasnt...hope this helps you out ...I had this problem with a laptop I've been restoring sadly for me it meant my cd-drive was fried.

Mine is a HP Pavilion dv8000, my suggestion to you would be try uninstalling it and rebooting, it will reinstall on it own.

Beyond that I'm not sure what can be done. You could remove the complete drive itself and clean it up and put it back making sure everything is attached properly.

The other option is finding a boot disk. I had to put the cd-drive at the bottom of my boot list so that it wouldn't finish the boot cycle.

Good luck

Solve : Installing XP onto a Vista preinstalled laptop?

Answer»

hi there, i realise theres a few threads related to this but i couldnt FIND the exact information i needed so thought id reitterate here.

Ive just purchased a Laptop which comes with Vista preinstalled, and i wish to wipe it all and reinstall XP

the laptop is this

HP G70 212EM Notebook
CPU - Intel Pentium Dual Core T 3400 (2.16 GHz)
Memory - 3GB
Graphics - Intel Graphics Media Accellerator 4500MHD
Hard Drive - 250GB
Optical Drive - Super Multi DVD Writer
Comunication - 56K & LAN & WLAN

I have a copy of Windows XP Professional i wish to install on it. when rebooting it from the setup cd it says somthing about hard drive not recognised, and after having looking into it here (http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c01675438) i realise it is somthing to do with the type of hard drive that isnt usually used by XP.

id like to know how best to do this and what the dangers are, as in what would i lose from doing this in terms of performance of the computer. also where can i find the SATA drivers and how best to PUT them onto the laptop, what happens if i disable them etc.

thanks a lot. the main reason i want to do this is because i liked the way XP worked fine for me, and Vista seems a BIT annoyin, plus ive heard a lot of bad things about it, and also to get rid of a lot of the preinstalled HP programs that seem to fill the computer. 1) It has nothing to do with a hard drive that isn't used by XP. It's simply a SATA drive released AFTER XP so XP doesn't have the driver for it
2) You can create a slipstream cd with the sata driver if you like
3) Better yet, forget what you heard about Vista - it's just fine. Try it for a while and see what you think for yourself. At a quick glance it does not appear they have XP drivers for that Model...
Better make sure before you wipe it or you'll have a paperweight.hi thanks for the replies

heres a page i found claiming to have XP drivers for my model of laptop

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=uk&lang=en&product=3879670

does that look like it has everything?

what is a slipstream cd and how does one make it? also where would i find the SATA drivers to include?

also do you know if there are any major problems in doing this?

i think i will give vista a try but just want to know what the implications are in putting xp on, the hp article i linked to seemed to suggest there would be quite a few problems...A keyboard and a network driver aren't gonna cut it i'm afraid...especially with a laptop.
PS. That's the page i was at.

See #3) in Allans post above...fair enough, think thats what ill do, thanks for the help guysYepper.

Although they don't admit this was intentional on their part (the manuf.) this is kinda new to the PC industry...
In years past a downgrade (some would say upgrade in this instance) to an older OS was pretty much a given...
I suspect we'll see the trend continue with the release of Win7...

After all if the manuf. don't have to pay their staff to write Drivers for older OS's think of how much cabbage they are keeping in their pockets...

But Good Luck with Vista...i think you'll find after using it awhile it's a solid OS...they just moved a BUNCH of things around from where you were used to finding them in XP...
I myself run the 64bit ver. and i even experienced a small learning CURVE...

BTW Welcome Aboard !

Solve : No video, but only audio?

Answer»

Currently my VLC player is playing all my videos with only audio but no video (its just a black screen!)

How can i fix this?

I use a Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3Reinstall VLC player.........If that doesn't work, try reinstalling your video driver in device manager..

Click Start, right click on "my COMPUTER", click "properties", click "hardware" tab, click "device manager"

Click on the "+" sign next to "display adapters", right click on the item in the submenu and click on "UNINSTALL"....Restart the comptuer and windows will reinstall the driver automatically .... Make SURE you are using the latest version of the driver as WELL...Open VLC - go to TOOLS - PREFERENCES - at the BOTTOM put a tick in Show ALL - Click on the VIDEO setting - remove the tick from OVERLAY VIDEO OUTPUT

Did that help?It helped, but now my videos are incredibly laggy, is this normal?
No. Check the other video settings (play with them a little). Also, try GOM player - I actually prefer it to videolan.
Im not good at "playing" with video settings

Does GOM player play .mkv files well?

Solve : Taking forever to delete shortcuts from Windows Menu?

Answer»

I've been dragging applications to the windows menu. I find it convenient for FREQUENTLY USED apps. But I've noticed that when I delete one from there it takes like 30 seconds to a minute for the delete to complete. For a test I deleted one off my desktop it's fine. Never seen this before. Did a search prior to the POST. If it's there I just screwed up on the search keywords. Any IDEAS?
