Solve : .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 update will not install?

Answer»

I purchased a new Motherboard and installed it and reinstalled Windows XP Home ADDITION and proceeded to install everything back onto my computer. Now Microsoft does an automatic update and I restate the computer only to have it want to update the same thing all over again because it can not install .NET Framework 1.1 SERVICE PACK 1 I have gone to SITES and Microsoft mentioned if a Netframe HOTFIX 1.0 (KB886906)or 1/1(KB886904) were installed first it would create this problem and I should uninstall it. Well I have a HOTFIX but it is not ONE of those. I do not have enough experience to know what to do here. Can you help me? Thanks for listening.Try This...

Solve : degfragmentor problem?

Answer»

For some reason the defragmentor in Windows XP isn't working like it is suppose to... Basically, it is unable to defrag. some of the fragmented files... I ran it twice with the same RESULT. I've never had this PROBLEM before

I posted a screen shot of what it looks like after the defrag. is complete..

[attachment deleted by admin]Download the trial version of either PerfectDisk (my choice) or Diskeeper and see if either of them do the job for you. (BTW, XP's defrag utility is ACTUALLY a scaled down version of Diskeeper)Quote from: ADG on August 31, 2009, 07:57:58 AM

(BTW, XP's defrag utility is actual a scaled down version of Diskeeper)

Interesting thanks, will try well the trial version of PerfectDisk worked well... I wonder why Windows Defrag. wasn't up to the task this time..I don't know. For important utilities (and I consider defragmenters important) I always go 3rd PARTY (the built-in utilities are okay, but just not as robust as full, dedicated apps). I've been a PerfectDisk beta tester for years and am a big fan of their products.well thx again SureDisKeeper Lite is still available and FREE all the features except scheduling....
I currently am running Auslogics Defrag...also a Free version...
Needed it for 64bit ...the Vista defrag isn't as improved as MS says it was so i moved on.Quote from: patio on August 31, 2009, 08:49:54 AM
DisKeeper Lite is still available and FREE

thx, I stuck DisKeeper in my tool box That TOOLBOX should be overflowing by now as you grab all the goodies we happen to mention....

Solve : Check Disk Will Not Run Even Scheduled with Reboot?

Answer»

Running under Win XP.
Can not get Check Disk (or disk defrag) to run at all.
Even with reboot, the computer just goes back to XP logon page and boots back to desktop.
Have tried entering commands DIRECTLY from C> prompt. No good either.
Any HELP appreciated.
Thanks.
brian10253Boot to the Recovery CONSOLE (boot to the XP CD and choose the first repair option) and run chkdsk /rThis worked, thank you.
However, one has to be very precise on entering dos commands.
For example, the precise way to enter the command is:
chkdsk_c:_/r where _ represents a space
Since Win2K most command line switches require a space between the command and switch...
Glad you are fixed up.

Actually it may be even older than that...I believe, switches always needed a space since I saw DOS for the first time. All you had to do was enter the command as I posted it (and when running checkdisk on the system partition there is no need to enter the drive designation)But quite a few people miss the space...even when it's right there in the Post.

In fact i used to always type out " Note there is a space between the command and switch" ....but i grew WEARY of it.Quote from: patio on August 31, 2009, 06:40:13 AM

I suppose. I've been doing this so long I forget others haven't......

So i disconnect it and PUT it back in comes back as same. I DISABLE it/enable it same. I uninstall/and let it reinstall it does the same again. SAYS something like the registry for this driver is damaged. Please help I know small things to do to fix computer problems, but I haven't faced this yet.One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through DEVICE Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.

- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled. Also, insert a bootable disc in the drive and reboot. Does the system see the disc / drive at boot?

Solve : DELL Windows XP installed in a COMPAQ presario V2000?

Answer»

Hello, I had some problems with my LAPTOP Compaq presario v2000. I need it to format it, but the only cd that I have is the DELL Recovery cd for windows Home. (my laptop has the code for the windows xp home, so i thought that it was not illegal because i already paid for windows)
anyway, I have windows, but a lot of hardware is having a problems: mass sotorage controller, multimedia audio controller, network controller, pci modem, sm bus controller, universal serial bus (USB controller and video controller) I tried to install them from the HP WEBSITE, but it didn't work, I download (paid) drivers from a website, but it says "The INF file does not contain information for this SISTEM's hardware"
What can I do? is there a place where I can download the recovery cd windows xp home for a compaq?
Thanks
you can't download compaq windows recovery. Either you use recovery system built into the compaq computer by HP, or you buy a recovery cd from HP.

A: it may not activate properly because its a already used COPY of windows
B: NEVER pay for drivers if they are not free you are getting scamed
C: we avoid assisting piracy
however, if it is a used copy of windows for which you are 100% SURE it's genuine windows product key, then microsoft/HP would be willing to help you get the product activated (on same computer for which said product key came with)Call Compaq for replacement Recovery CD's...
Another alternative would be to borrow an XP CD to do the install.
You will still have to contact MS upon activation...use the #800 number.

Attempting this with the Dell CD will give you nothing but grief...especially since it's a laptop.

Solve : c000021a fatal error?

Answer»

hey all please help

i've followed the instructions for a previous post from BC_programmer but the automatic reboot is still "looping" a friend told me. Please help I try and I try to fix this and it just keeps happening. I can enter safe mode for about 10 seconds and then it reboots...is this a virus or something that occurred when windows updated automatically, also can this problem be fixed?

my computer is a compaq presario notebook R3000 and I'm using windows xp.

in short i did the instructions for a XP repair install and it will not stay booted up still

PLEASE HELP ( I am not 100 % computer savvy so please easy explanations are appreciatedDid you happen to write down the contents of the entire "fatal" message? What are the contents of the entire message? Fatal Message
Stop: C000021a {fatal system error}
The windows LOGON process system terminated unexpectdely with a status of oxoooooo5 (oxoooooooo oxoooooooo)
the system has been shut down

does that help?I can find hardly any useful info. on this specific error

Are you able to boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt?no unfortunately the computer goes quickly to the error message (less then 3 seconds) and reboots.

I did try the xp repair and that let me at least get to my desktop (with the originaly xp disc in) then it rebooted.

I can get into the prompt menu but it reboots after about 8 secondsA. If you have more than one RAM module INSTALLED, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. UNZIP downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. OPEN ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, then you have bad RAM.

im not sure at all what you mean..... note the test pass may go to 120%I suspect, you may have RAM problem, so if you have more than 1 RAM stick installed, try starting LAPTOP with 1 RAM stick at a time.how do i do that?open the ram panel
and if you see 2 sitcks of ram
if they have a lock
unlock one and pull it out
otherwise just pull it out

Uh. there's a lot of stuff that could be happening. Is it just randomly restarting, when you're doing something or even sitting idle? Unfortunately, there's too many variables out there.

Solve : Reinstalling issues...?

Answer»

I recently bought a new HD for my HP pavillion 7400 Slimline. I installed WINDOWS XP but I screwed up and installed to the H drive. I'm trying to reinstall to the C drive, but I cannot create nor delete EITHER partition.

H: Partitional [NTFS] 953859MB (949225 MB free)
Unpartitional Space 7MB
Unknown Disk
(There is no disk in this drive)
There's two more unknown disks aftet that.

Any help?

Btw, it can't go online, so I'm using my Wii.How are you trying to repartition? It should be done by booting to the XP CD, starting the install routine, and then deleting and CREATING partitions.I put my XP disk in that came with my pc, that I used to install it before. It gives me the OPTION to install, delete, create, or quit. When I try to delete the partitional H drive from above, it says "setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporary Setup files that are required to complete the installation."
You cannot try to do this from within Windows. You need to BOOT to the CD.Why thank you SIR. Select Cd/dvd drive as boot device?Yes sir.

Solve : multiple operating system but only boot's to one?

Answer»

a m8 has suggested to try Ubuntu so ill give that a GO cause i have no idea what else i can try just had another look at the bios and the HDD's are set up like this

IDE Channel 0 master {none}
IDE Channel 1 slave {none}
IDE Channel 1 master {sony dvd RW]
IDE Channel 1 slave [hl-dt-st gce-8481b]
IDE Channel 2 master [WDC 74]
IDE Channel 3 master [maxtor]
IDE Channel 4 master [hitachi]
IDE Channel 5 master [none]

so looks like all my HDD are set to master, should i only have 1 master and the rest slaves?Just use the BIOS to switche between drives at bootup...
Does this machine have an addon PCI IDE controller card ? ?i dont think this machine has the option to CHANGE what order the HDD boot
its either HDD or floppy cd/dvd ect.

i dont if it has a PCI IDE controller card m8 ok so now i swaped my main HDD with the other HDD on my mobo
and when i boot up i get the NTLDR is missing.
would this be the reason i have no duel boot?

Solve : Laptop does not recognize some CD's but other discs work...?

Answer»

The laptop is a Toshiba Tecra A2 running Windows XP. There's this problem that i came across just recently. It sounds weird but all the CD's work except these 4 or 5 which i got a while back. And these 4 or 5 CD's work perfectly on another laptop which is a HP having Windows Vista. Also i did try them on a third laptop which is a Toshiba Satellite and those few discs don't seem to work on any of the Toshiba's but work fine only on the HP.
A POSSIBLE workaround would be to copy the contents and store it in some other external device and then transfer it to the Toshiba laptops but that would be a little difficult although possible. But i STILL want to know why this problem is occurring and if there is a solution or fix to it?
Thanks. Are they CD-R/RW or are they store bought, also are there any scratches or marks on them?they are mostly CD-R...no there are no visible scratches or marks...they work on another computer properly but dont work in these two specific ones...If they're HOME made CDs, some CD drives are picky about CD brand, and Toshiba is probably the pickiest oh.. guess i didn't know about Toshiba's pickiness! well there's no other option except to copy the cd's...anyway thanks for replying! For the ones that don't work you can use the Free edition of ISOBuster to extract the raw data to an empty folder...then burn them on the Toshiba and they should work fine...

BTW are these movies ? ?thanks for the program PATIO! No, they're not movies....most of them are audio and i think only one of them has a video....You're more than Welcome...
It's also useful for retrieving data off CD's that have not been finalised and show as empty otherwise... ill keep that in mind!

Solve : linksys wireless laptop connection?

Answer»

please help!to make a long story short,my connection gave me problems for awhile and I kept repairing it on my own(i am just a mom,COMPUTER knowledge minimal);I am using linkys wpc11 v3;after a half day of messing around,i got it back again, and i am showing connection 5 as connected;why do I show no 5?is it possible that i have like 5 connections and they interfere with eachother?do i have to delete them and if yes, how?

please help me;thanksClick Start, right click on "my computer", click "properties", hardware tab, Device Manager

In Device Manager, LOOK where it says, "NETWORK adapters", click on the "+" sign next to it and then right click on the item in the sub menu, click "uninstall" and then restart the comptuer... Windows will then reinstall your wireless card driver..

See how that works out for you.... thanks;but,if I uninstall...than I will not have a connection again?and have to try again to set it up?If you uninstall the way I described, Windows will automatically reinstall the driver for you when you restart the computer...assuming that Windows has a driver for your card

When you first INSTALLED the wireless card, did Windows automatically set it up for you or did you have to install a driver that came with the card?I had to install it...Do you still have the driver that came with the card?yes, this is how I reinstalled it;I just don't understand why am I showing conection 5 on the bottom corner of my screen where you see the little computer icon for the internet conection;how did it became no 5?I never had that before...I think I KNOW what you mean... I've had that problem before, it's nothing major... I was thinking that if you uninstalled in Dev. Manager, it would delete all those extra connections you have, but if you don't want to do that I'll try and think of another way and post back later.thanks!!!!

Solve : DEP Error in Internet Explorer start up?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP service pack 3. Every time I start up Internet Explorer 8 I get a DEP error. This doesn't happen when I start it WITHOUT add ons. I've attached several logs. Can someone please review and HELP?

[attachment deleted by admin]is this a double post?
GuitarGerry,

I think what smeezekitty was trying to get at is that you shouldn't post TWO topics about the exact same thing. When you do it splits up and confuses any help you might receive. If you post the same thing more then once just to make sure you get it in the RIGHT section you don't have to worry about that as it can be moved if needed.

Oh yeah welcome to the forum and just be patient and some one will come along to logs at your logs.

Smeezekitty,

If you know or strongly think that some one has double posted you can read each post to make sure and then advise them not to instead of just asking if it is a double post.

I decided to install firefox so I DOWNLOADED it, but when I double click on the icon, it brings up the BOX that says 'choose the PROGRAM you want to open this FILE' And then it has all the programs like internet explorer, adobe reader, itunes, paint, quicktime,... listed.

I know we get this box when we install programs that are not associated with applications, but this is WEIRD, ive never seen it with an exe. I cant even open regedit or any of the other files that have the exe ending

what do i do
Do all other .exe file open properly?no exe files open. but i found a nifty program called exe_fix.xp.com that fixed it. I tried to delete this post but the board wont let me.

Solve : cant boot into safe mode?

Answer» GOT a dell dimension e510 running win xp. there is a pesky spyware, windows antivirus PRO and total security center, which causes annoying popups. I did a search f or these name USING search for files and folders and I came up with quite a few locations. However I cant delete all of these entries as some of the files are in use (to cause those popups). I cant even go into add/remove programs to see if I c an uninstall the offending program t hat way.I tried to g et the machine to boot into safemode but whenver I do, it crashes, saying this system has been shut down to prevent damages to your computer.

What can I do?VISIT our Virus and Spyware section and follow the INSTRUCTIONS at the top of the page...
Someone will be along shortly.
It's common for some infections to block access to safemode.

Solve : CD becomes "read-only"?

Answer»

My 2002 Gateway came with Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 installed. Early on I learned that putting pictures onto a CD was a fairly complicated procedure, a fact that seemed counter-intuitive. Through trial and error I discovered that CD's needed to be formatted before I could transfer any photos to them. Roxio supplied a thing called Direct CD Utility; I used CD-R disks, formatted them on this utility, and then was able to transfer my family photos to the CD. Success. If I just inserted a brand new CD-R into the tray, and clicked on the CD drive under "My Computer," I'd get a message like "incorrect function" and "inaccessible." So I kept using the Direct CD utility to format every new CD. Lately, however, certain anomalies occur. The most discouraging one is that if I'm transferring a number of folders of photos from My Pictures to the CD, at a certain point, the CD changes to a read-only CD. On the DIrect CD Utility, there's an option to "make writable," but it is never highlighted, so I cannot click on it with any success. For SEVERAL years I've been saving my photos to these CD-R disks, I've been able to add to them, to delete files from them - in short, things some people have said one isn't supposed to be able to do with CD-R disks. Now the really screwy thing is that when one of these CD's has turned into a read-only CD, and I eject it, the message in the little window indicates that the CD is readable/writable. I have uninstalled Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 and reinstalled it, but that has not made the process go back to the way I've used it for five years. I've seen a site called DriversUpdate.org, but I'm not confident about downloading anything unless I get some good advice first. I recently tried using CD-RW disks, but the same thing happens: what starts out as a writable disk becomes read only while I'm transferring photos to it.
Any possible suggestions short of voodoo would be welcomed.i am not clear on what you saying but are you sure you not finalizing the disk(?)You may have an option selected (somewhere) that finalizes the disk after the recording SESSION is complete.... Some burning software, like CDburnerXP, allows you to SELECT before hand, whether you want to finalize the disk or keep it open (meaning that you can write to it in the future). This might be the case with your burning software...Thus, if you select "finalize" OR, "close session", per se, it will close the session, officially making it a "read-only" disk.

With respect to the CD-RW discs, try doing a full erase on them, before writing to them all over again... CDburnerXP does this job well.. If you are using a "mastered" traditional format when you first write to them, (not the drag and drop method), you won't be able to write to them until you erase them first...

You could try reinstalling the driver for your Optical drive as well... START>right click my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager

Next to where is says, "DVD/CD rom drives", click on the "+" sign next to it and then right-click on the item in the submenu, then click "uninstall" then restart and try burning again seeing if there's any difference...

If all else fails, you could try a firmware update, but I doubt that's the current problem.

You may find some luck here as well..

Uninstall all that garbage you have and just insert the disk normally.

For picture disks you shouldn't have to do much other then let window detect and ask what it is you want to do with the disk.

Should look like this..

Packet writing apps switch a disk to read only when it becomes full, or when a certain number of write errors occur. Thanks for your ideas and suggestions; let me try to clarify what I may have left unsaid in the original post. I'm certain that I'm not finalizing the disk. While I've read many entries on various sites mentioning finalizing CD's I have never been presented with the option to finalize. I understand what it means; the option simply never appeared on my computer screen. On all of the photo CD's I made, I was able to add and delete files as I saw fit; in all that time never once did the option of finalizing appear. What may have been unclear in my original post was that while I'm in the process of transferring photos from My Pictures or my camera's memory card to the CD, the CD changes its identity, if you will, from a writable to a read-only CD; this happens long before the CD has reached its capacity. Could a virus or some other glitch in the computer cause a "finalize" to occur on its own?

For several years I used Maxell CD-R's and Fujifilm CD-R's; when this problem began I tried HP-RW, and they seemed to work okay, but now they don't. I've even used Imation in the past and had no problem with them.

A couple of days ago I did go to the Device Manager and did an uninstall-reinstall of the driver, but the problem persists.

I also uninstalled and reinstalled Easy CD Creator 5, three days ago, and I just recalled that in the beginning of the reinstallation a message came up to say that the program and Microsoft Windows were incompatible; yet the installation proceeded in what seemed to be a normal fashion. That seemed odd to me insofar as Easy CD 5 was already installed when I bought the computer (with Windows XP) in 2002. Could the Windows updates, which arrive automatically, somehow make Easy CD creator 5 and Windows incompatible in some way?

Please bear with me. The following description might allow you some further insight.
I place a new CD in the tray, click "My Computer," left-click on "CD Drive(D)", receive this error message: "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." No Windows panel opens to ask me what I would like to do with the CD. I right-click on CD Drive(D) and in the panel that appears I click on "Format." A panel entitled Direct CD 5.10(121)(Drive D) appears; in it is the message "Formatting CD." After a minute or two, appears the message "Verifying file system just written," and then very quickly appears a new panel entitled "Error: Read data." In that panel is "Illegal request. Drive reported an error with a command it received, please. You will not be able to read and write to the CD through drive letter access."

I know I've been long-winded here, but I'm guessing that the more details you know , the more you might be able to offer me. Thanks again for your responses and for your patience.
edgavin, you have made things very clear. Thank you. You confirmed one thing to me. You are using packet writing to get the data on these CDs. I mentioned this before. Maybe I'll write it in capital letters so that other posters (not you) understand this. PACKET WRITING. That is not the same as "burning" a disk. Comments about "finalizing", "sessions" etc, do not apply. Great. Now we have cleared that out of the way.

Briefly, there are two common WAYS to get data onto a CD or DVD disk.

(1) Using a "burning" application (software program) such as Roxio Easy CD Creator, Nero Burning ROM, etc. With this setup, the data is transferred onto the disk in blocks called "sessions". You start off with a blank disk. You start up your burning app, tell it what files and folders you want to burn. Then you write the data to the disk in a "session". This may be a whole disk's worth of data, or less. If you finalize the disk, that's it. No more. You have a "single session" disk. If the session is smaller than the disk capacity, you have the choice of leaving the disk "open" so that one or more sessions can be added. This makes a "multi-session" disk. When you try to add a session that is bigger than the remaining capacity on the disk, the burning app will refuse and you then have to finalize or "close" the disk. Note that at ALL times during this process, the files that appear on the disk are read-only. They start that way and remain so, and are never otherwise. Even with an RW disk. To make an audio CD or video DVD you have to burn it. Disadvantages: perceived as cumbersome and complex by some computer users. Advantages: robust, easier to tailor the disk how you want it.

(2) Drive letter access. You can create, delete, copy, move, drag and drop files using Windows Explorer. This uses a technique called packet writing. After formatting the optical media it is then possible to write data in small packets, hence the name “packet writing.” The optical drive UNIT has to support the ability to write in small units, which all modern CD and DVD recording drives do. This way it is possible to save files onto optical media, as well as change, rename or delete them, or copy files separately onto the media. It is built into some versions of Windows where it is called Drive Letter Access ("DLA"). Also there are competing apps such as Nero InCD, and Roxio Drag-to-Disc (formerly Adaptec DirectCD). Files are read/write until an error occurs, at which time the app marks all files on the disk as read-only to protect your data. This is a simplified account, so please, no flames.

A handy page of information about DLA is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive_Letter_Access

Many people have problems with DLA. These can be caused by bad disks, deteriorating drives, and software conflicts. You have been lucky for a while, it seems, but now you are having problems. I honestly think your best bet is to enrol in and post on a specialist forum such as CDFReaks. For example see here http://club.cdfreaks.com/f34/data-formatted-dvd-rw-becomes-read-only-143021/

I meant by "not you" that edgavin is not the person who is getting burning and packet writing confused, but some of the others posting "advice".
I'm aware that you were not referring to the OPTo Salmon Trout: Thank you so much for your clear differentiation of the methods of putting information onto CD's; I had never heard of or read of packet writing until you brought it up in your first response to my original post. The term "drive letter access" now has some meaning for me. This forum has helped me a great deal on several occasions, and while personalities naturally do emerge from postings here, the spirit of learning from one another is clearly paramount. My greatest respect goes to the people who share their knowledge and experience. I will take your advice and enroll on the site you mention, and will return here with what I learn. Solve : Missing Internet Connection Icons?

Answer»

For the PAST 8 months or so I've been unable to locate the internet connection icon for my wireless internet. I am using a USB adaptor Linksys WUSB600N but when everything was first installed a year ago everything was ok. Since then I have uninstalled and REINSTALLED the adaptor a few times and have also done some other editing of network preferences and now my icon for my wireless internet connection has gone away on both the system tray and in network connections menu. I have tried Microsoft's troubleshooting for Missing Icons top to bottom with no avail: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825826

When I have the 3rd party Linksys CONTROL panel control my adaptor I can connect to the internet just fine without problems. However I have the option to switch control over to the XP Wireless ZERO Configuration utility and when I do that I loose internet connection.
So maybe with messing with some of the preferences I had accidentally deleted some files? I'm not sure, hopefully someone can help out.
I also have run numerous virus scans and malware scans with Adaware, Spybot, and Avast! All have come back negative.

I can update with more information as needed, thank you.See attachments

Weird problem out of the blue I have never had happen before today, all of a sudden my laptop screen is displaying sideways, first some info....

Toshiba Laptop

1.60 GHz, 0.99 GB RAM

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Just last WEEK I reinstalled windows due to a problem connecting with the internet so everything is pretty much new, and runnig great until today....
Out of the blue the sctreen is now showing everything sideways, my neck is kinking just typing this, lol, I have run Spybot, AdAware, CCleaner, AntiVir (2 trojans found in that but deleted them and still have the problem) Ewido, and a Panda online scan, rebooted and still the problem...

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how to fix it?
I really dont want to reinstall windows all over again unless I have to, took me days just to get back all the programs I had....
I remember a few weeks ago I think seeing a thread where someone else had this problem, cant find it now though, and dont remember much about the thread other then that...
Can anyone help?
Oh, one other THING, just before this happened my wife plugged in a new microphone to try out just before it happened, could something like that have anything to due with the screen going sideways? I dont see how...
Right click on your desktop, select Properties>Advanced and look for the 'rotate' button.
The steps to do it were slightly different, but that did it, I didnt even know there was an option to rotate the screen, I have no idea how it got changed in the first place, thanx FED, cheers! 8-)I believe there are some hot keys that can rotate it too, you may have mistakenly pressed them. You have said that your wife plugged in a new microphone to try out just before it happened, maybe she destroy it.

Solve : dvd player will not recognize dvd disks?

Answer»

Hello all,

I'm using an HP pavilion 750n, XP home, SP2 with current updates, with preinstalled OS, no recovery or install CD's.

Yesterday (082609) Broni suggested a solution to run "cdgone" to correct a CD reader that would not recognize CD's. That solution worked for the PERSON with the problem.

This situation is that my DVD reader (no burner) will not recognize commercial or home burned DVD's, (asks to insert a disk). It will however recognize and run a CD lens cleaner and will also see and play commercial and home made music CD's.

I have checked the power & ribbon connections, device MANAGER says the device is working and have uninstalled the DVD drivers & rebooted to reinstall them, to no avail.

My question is: If I run "cdgone" to try to fix the DVD burner, will it cause any problems with the CD reader/burner, which still works.

Thanx much for any input.

CheersDVD and CD are two different laser readers...SOUNDS like the DVD laser is shot.
No software fix will correct this.

As a matter of curiosity, do you mean that there are two lasers in the DVD reader?

smeezekitty, thanks too. FYI, under computer management>device manager>CD/DVD drivers, both devices list the same drivers.

As patio said, you don't need any extra drivers for optical drives.

If none of 4 steps, I usually list, works, in 99% cases, the drive is dead (or one of its lasers).Broni, you is OK. I don't care what "Bill" sez about you. The cdgone fix fixed the DVD player. I'll tuck this away for future reference.

I understand about the drivers, I was just posting what's listed for smeesekitty's information.

One for DVD, one for CD. Different wavelengths. (CD laser 780 nanometres; DVD laser 640 nanometres)

A DVD writer drive has 4 lasers: CD read, DVD read, CD write, DVD write.

Nice Four lasers, whoda thunk. Thanks Salmon.

Solve : Office 2007 out of office warning message?

Answer»

Hi,
A number of us here have this problem.

In MS Office 2007 Outlook is there a setting to make a warning message appear when opening Outlook when the Out of Office assistant is on?

We used to have this is earlier versions of office but no message APPEARS now that we have 2007.

Thanks Some very good INFO at this Microsoft page with related links to other information:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HP012328301033.aspx

RosieThanks Rosie, much appreciated, but the page didn't answer my question. It was full of usefull information though.

I'm unable to find any articles COVERING this subject. has anyone got any IDEA what's causing this?IN Outlook 2007 the OOF warning appears in a balloon. Do the users see this?

This is the message that doesn't always turn up.

When they have OOF switched on and they open outlook 2007 they sometimes get the message and sometimes they don't.

I can't see any option to switch this facility on or off. So, I'm at a loss as to why they don't always get it.

Solve : Windows Update xp?

Am having problems updating Windows XP on my laptop, which is used very infrequently. Was fine until about a year ago, then was a bit erratic. Error code for all failed updates is 8009310B. .
Have turned off Automatic Updating for the time being and ALSO uninstalled Avira A/V and downloaded AVG instead.
Tried updating with anti virus switched off and still won't work.
A very few of the updates get as far as the download but then won't install.
This is getting a bit worrying as there are now 30+ updates ( mostly security) waiting to be installed. WOULD be GRATEFUL for any helpAre your updates LISTED in Add/Remove programs ? ?
If so try removing the last one in the list and re-booting...
Then try the Update process again.Have tried uninstalling the last update in the Add /Remove programme, as you suggested, but still unable to install new updatesAre you trying to manually update or using Automatic Updates ? ?Always used to use Automatic Updates, but since the problems started, have tried updating using both the auto and manual update from Microsoft website. at present, auto update is switched off.
Have also tried installing one update at a time.
Still no luck
Thanks for you suggestions and do you have any other ideas?
Have also trawled all over the place, to try to find the error code 8009310B and failed to find itMore Info...

Solve : Problems With Task Manager?

Answer»

Hi, I'm on a Windows XP Home Toshiba laptop, SP3 and some problems seem to be creeping up....

If a program get stuck and I launch the task manager it doesnt run right, if I choose to close a program it closes it, but then another 15-20 task manager windows appear, and the button to close them disappears, the only way I can close them is to right click the window on the bottom of the page and close the group, that sometime works but restarts Windows Explorer...

Sometimes that wont work at all and I have to use a program called 'Kill Process' to do the job....

In another issue, if I put my laptop in 'standby' mode, for example by closing the lid, it will not come of out standby after that, the only thing I can do is reboot....

I have run SuperAntiSpyware and Malewarebytes but thats not finding anything, I cant tell if this MAY be a malware issue or maybe my harddrive is slowly on its way out?

Any help with this is appreciated....

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista, most likely, you won't need it).
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
Thanx Broni, I just ran it and it just closed after running, so I assume it didnt find anything, and the problem is still there, anything else I should check?SFC is supposed to close after running. It doesn't really "find errors", it replaces any modified or missing system files with their original versions.

Have you run a full scan with your AV app?Quote from: Allan on January 04, 2010, 06:53:40 AM

Have you run a full scan with your AV app?
Yes, a few times actually, I have had this problem for about a month now and just got around to trying to figure it out, my malwarebytes program found a couple of things last week (which surprised me, my Kaspersky works really well) and cleaned any infections, yet the problem remains.....So Kaspersky did find malware? Okay, If I were you I'd go to the malware forum on this site and follow the instructions in the ANNOUNCEMENT at the top of that forum. Might as well be 100% certain the system is malware-free before we start looking elsewhere.Quote

This is only partially TRUE, because in case of XP (this case), if sfc finds corrupted/missing file, it'll ask for Windows CD. It's not like Vista, which keeps backups for most of system files.

I agree with Allan about going for malware check.Quote from: Broni on January 04, 2010, 05:27:36 PM

XP keeps copies in dllcache, and a "precopy" folder can be set that contains what would normally be in the XP CD's i386 folder.
(I'm not sure if it copies from dllcache, though) Also, Allan did say "replaces with their original versions"... just because he OMITTED where they are copied from doesn't make it incorrect However not all XP's system files are in .dllcache...which is why it will request the CD.Quote from: patio on January 04, 2010, 06:40:18 PM
However not all XP's system files are in .dllcache...which is why it will request the CD.

yes that too. I think that, if manufacturers have EVER done something right with a preinstalled environment, it was what I witnessed on my win98 laptop; a folder that contained the contents of the CD-ROM's "win98" folder. I think they did this with a few XP laptops.

Basically, somehow they manage to make windows believe it was installed from that location, so that instead of prompting for the disc when required, it was able to search the "disc" (which was really a hard drive folder) and copy all the necessary files without prompting at all. This extended to anything that required the disk, not just SFC (which of course didn't exist in win98) but also to things like driver installs and so forth.

On the other hand, it was the first folder that I deleted. (hey, it only has a 2GB hard disk...)Vista (I assume Win 7 too) is pretty good in that matter. It keeps system files copies (sometimes several copies) and I yet have to see Vista's "sfc" asking for any disk (most people don't have them anyway).Quote from: Broni on January 04, 2010, 07:53:13 PM
(most people don't have them anyway).

Which brings up the fact that they really should but manufacturers are too cheap to provide them. That has been always driving me nuts.
Then, they're surprised, people use torrents to get that disk...You guys are correct that by default system file checker will ask for the XP CD to replace missing/changed/corrupt system files. However, the sourcepath in registry can easily be changed to look wherever you like. Still, my post above certainly could have been more clear In all the years i've been here when XP machines were being cranked out with no CDs provided i can count on one hand how many people were sharp enough to be pro-active and install the Recovery Console on their machine along with a copy of the i386 folder......

Yet this option was always out there...

Probably the most famous and used line on here has been/was "i don't have an XP CD"...

Solve : recovery cd's dell?

Answer»

I have a dell 1500 vostro running windows xp sp3. I have the two recovery cds that came with it. My question centers on what will exactly happen when I install the drivers and utlities cd. Will the cd automatically LOAD all the drivers. Or will I have to PICK and chose each driver in the proper order. Maybe there is a youtube video that does a step by step for this, all I could find was installing windows.
A second question is, should I delete partions and then create a new one like dell does, or can I just reinstall on the big partition like the rest of the world? This is in regards to reinstalling the first cd on the same hard drive.A few QUESTIONS first...
Are you LOOKING to wipe this machine ? ?
Using the Recovery OEM CD's on any machine completely wipes out any data and takes the machine back to Day One status...

Or are you simply trying to correct a Driver issue ? ?
If so the Driver CD will not destroy any data and is safe to run....
Most just have a setup.exe that automates the process...but i've also seen ones where each driver needs to be done manually...

Let us Know. The utilities disk will not install anything without user interaction. Trying to bring her back to day one. Actually back to day two after I removed all the bloat ware. Maybe I should mention that these recovery discs were MADE by dell, and there is no recovery partition on my hard drive.the discs should work fine then... as long as you understand you are about to lose all your data...
Carry on...

my disk is 90% empty. I went to my computer->properties->tools, and tried to run t he chkdsk. says cant do the chkdsk. and also still says cant defragment. Why is this happening

Usually the error message is a little more "specific" than "cant do the chkdsk". What is the "exact" message?Boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r2x3i5x: I cant do the defrag or chkdsk for errors in safe mode either.

ADG: To get to the recovery console do I have to get to the options screen (the ONE that shows safe mode, safe mode with networking,....) or do I have to do something ELSE. Can you tell me how to get to the recovery console?
When it says "cant do the chkdsk", does it ask if you'd like to schedule it to run at the next "boot"? If so, say "yes" and it should run at next boot.Do NOT schedule checkdisk from within the OS.

Boot to the XP CD and choose the FIRST repair option. That will take you to the Recovery Console. From there, run chkdsk /rthanks
You're welcome. I assume you're problem is resolved?yes, actually I couldnt run anything because of a malware popup. So I did a search for the popup name in search for files, and I deleted all the results. After that I was able to run the defrag
I suggest visiting our Virus and Malware Section...follow the instructions at the top of the page and make sure you are clean...

Solve : Windows xp error message?

When I boot up my Dell desk top, the screen is black and I get a message that "This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation. The product key found on this computer is not valid for use in your region." Windows was loaded on my computer when I bought it two years ago and always worked until now. I have tried to reenter the product key number unsuccessfully. Can anyone help?If you purchased the system from Dell with Vista installed I'd suggest a call to either Dell or Microsoft.can you get to windows at all? because sounds to me there is an error in a recent up date that is going arround. ive seen this happen twice this week. if you can get into windows do a system resore on your comp to the LAST date it was not showing that and then manually INSTALL the latest windows updates!!!Do you have the ORIGINAL RESTORE disk?

If so, insert your Restore disk, Right Click your CD rom, Explore and SEARCH for a file called WINNT.SIF. Open this file in Notepad and it should contain your Product Key from the original disk.stupid paranoid microsoft

Solve : Dual Boot XP and Vista. Now going to boot into XP and getting STOP error?

Answer»

Okay.. so I am trying to dual boot XP and Vista b/c I need XP operating system for work. I has Vista installed first then tried to load XP but I could not for the life of me get that to work. So what I ended up doing was installing XP first and I was able to get that installed and working. I downloaded the necessary drivers for that and had it good. Then I loaded Vista and had that put and downloaded all the drivers and necessary information. I restarted and wanted to boot into XP ( had the options for both ) I got the XP PRO loading screen and the blue bar went 1/5 way across the screen and I got the message of:

A Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
Technical information:
STOP 0X0000007B (0xF78AA63C, 0xC000000E, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I have a feelings its by XP bootloader menus but if I could fix it I wouldn't be POSTIN'

I appreciate any information/help I can get. THANK you for at least reading.I'd suggest you start by booting to the Recovery Console (boot to the XP CD and choose the first repair option) and run chkdsk /r - let's see what happens after that. I'm guessing it's not the bootloader if you XP actually starts to load.

Solve : Deleting files created under old XP account?

Answer»

Some time back I had to restore / re-install Windows XP on this machine. I used a different account name (Jonathan vs Jonathan Thomson). My defrag program shows that there are some very large files (email message store) that are under the directory C:/documents and settings/jonathan thomson. However Windows Explorer will not let me delete that directory or its contents - it tells me the folder is not accessible. I would dearly love to delete these large files so I can re-use the disk space being occupied by them. Can anyone please help. (I'd really not rather re-format the harddrive and re-install everything if I can POSSIBLY avoid it!)You need to take ownership (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421). Do xp sp3 useful to a HOME PC?

have installed a vista theme for xp which will not work on sp3.

Thank you for your consideration.Every user should install the latest service pack for his OS.Quote

I had that, then I got Zune, then I FOUND a modified Zune with a black START button. There is a patched SP3 version of uxtheme.dll
