Solve : Temporary Windows Fonts?

Answer»

My Toshiba laptop seems to be taking longer to boot these days so I decided to do some disk cleaning and removing unwanted programs.
One thing I was aware that slowed the boot process was having LOTS of fonts installed.
I have a font manager PROGRAM called "Font Explorer", and this reports I have a large number of "temporary" Windows fonts installed.
If I try to delete these fonts using Font Explorer, I get the message:
"The fonts you have selected are temporarily installed. Their file locations are not known, so they cannot be used for this kind of operation."
Some programs I have (e.g. Corel Graphics suite) recognise these fonts, but others, like Word, are not aware of them. I don't RECALL installing any of them and I don't want them, but I can't seem to remove them. I've done a search of the entire hard drive for the font names, but nothing comes up.

The normal Windows Control Panel font manager does not report them as even being installed, so I can't delete them through Windows.

I'm running Xp Pro, fully updated (SP3 etc.) on a Toshiba Tecra A2 laptop.

Can anyone help me find the location of these temporary fonts so that I can uninstall them?First off, I'm not a big fan of Toshiba laptops due to the fact that up to 80 processes start the first time you boot it up. As far as the temp fonts. Usually a temporary or soft font is a font that remains in a printers memory until it is reset. Do you have a PRINTER installed on this PC?

Also, you may want to try a wild card and do a search for one of the font names. Now and then, the font file will be the same name as the font.the fonts may be in memory not on the diskUnfortunately playing in the fonts folder is not an effective method of ttrying to speed up a laptop...
Some are required by Windows whether in use or not and getting rid of the wrong ones can render a machine un-bootable...i did some googleing and didnt see anything about computer becomming unbootable
from missing fonts
the worst i saw was unreadableeven so your simply not going to see any perceivable gain by removing fonts of any form.this is very true

what do you mean by packed into one .exe
evrey program has its own exeI'm saying that there are no supporting files for solitaire. Many people learning assembly try hacking windows games so that would have been my first thought. Tinkering around would certainly cause the things he's talking about. However considering he hasn't even posted on this topic since the original post, I'd call it a dead thread.well... no supporting files... not COUNTING kernel32, GDI32, etc.

I can see it, but it wouldn't have been my first guess.Well, DLL's, INI's...you know

Solve : Retrieve files from computer?

Answer»

This is where i'll disagree slightly...i've seen Repair Installs wipe data and partially install the OS...
More than once.

All it takes is for the user to skip/miss one step.Yes, it happens. That's why I mentioned not to format. But again, there's certainly no harm in doing it your way and then doing the repair install.Well....good news! Slaving the drive worked perfectly. I got all of my FILES with no problems. Thank you guys for all of your input. I NEVER thought of slaving the drive, but it worked. I have my files and I am now formatting the drive.

Thanks a million!

Solve : Windows XP - User Accounts - Folder sharing?

Answer»

I have created many user ACCOUNTS with limited & password protection.

I made some folders, shared & GIVE the PERMISSION to each shared folders.

When I access my computer for shared folder from remote computer with option START >> RUN >> \\
On some computers it asks for the password that I want... but on
some computers it opens without asking the password.

I checked manage password option, but nothing stored under it. I tried with CHANGING my computer's administrator password, it still open from remote computer withoput asking the password.....PLEASE guide......It should only prompt you once if your admin passwords are the same, unless you're on a domain. Then policies can be set. Thanks for reply....On change of admin password it should ask for new password. but it can't.
I just want to clear all stored password in the computer.
This setup is not on domain.Start > Run > CMD >Net User Administrator /Active:Yes [enter]

Net User Administrator PASSWORD

PASSWORD = your new password.

Do this for each machine. You won't have to confirm the password.

Solve : how to prevent users from colsing logon script before entering data?

Answer»

I have a command line logon script that is applied via Active Directory. It records the department, time, date and computer name to a csv file on a server share. We use this script to track computer usage. In order to KEEP funding for upgrades, repairs, etc, we have to prove that the classrooms are being used. The classrooms use shared logons. The computers are used by many people from WITHIN and outside of our organization.
Currently, we are using sign-in sheets, but we are having TROUBLE with people actually using the sheets. We need to show when, how long and who used the classrooms.

The script I wrote asks a user to enter their Department while the rest is automatic. The problem I am having is that the users are just closing the window without entering anything. How can I stop this? Is there any other ways I can run this script without having to purchase any software?

I THANK you for any help I get on this. Why not use a unique naming scheme to identify PC's in a department, then run your batch file minimized and instead of prompting the user for the department, use %computername%The PCs are in a classroom, not in a department. I am already gathering the computer names. I need to know who (what department or affiliation) they are. That is why I am asking for the user INPUT. any ideas?Compare the response with a list of valid "department or affiliation".

If the response is invalid, or if the user closes without entering data,
then reboot or shutdown - possibly starting with a 5 minute timeout penalty ! !

Solve : Screen images are upside down and backwards?

Answer»

My 3 year old Dell Insipiron E1505 laptop was working fine for hours until the screen IMAGES suddenly TURNED upside down (on the upper half of the screen -- the lower half was solid blue)and began rapidly scrolling sideways. After making SEVERAL attempts to get it to stop, I turned the power off. I popped the battery, even though I had not been using the battery to power it (it had been plugged into a Dell surge protector) and put it back in. After letting it sit for a while, I turned it back on and it started up normally, with one exception -- the screen image was upside down and backwards. After powering it on and off several times, the problem persists. How do I correct this?Try this....

http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=18692

Did not work.sounds like a hardware issue with the laptop screen or graphics circuitry.Check the graphics adapter drivers. You can usually get the original ones from the manufacturer's website. They may also have a hardware diagnostic program you can use to check that it is working properly. Another possible solution is to use windows system restore to restore it to a date you knew it was working/i faced this problem for almost the whole day.i somehow manage to get my comp screen normal to back.i went to a lot of websites and most of the websites suggest- 'ctrl+alt+arrow key' -which did not work for me.i than come across a website that suggest to look for rotation option under control panel-which i did not manage to find.

Finally i cme across the solution to my problem at one of those sites-right click on desktop, choose navdia option(im using ATI CATALYST ) and adjust the rotation drop down box(choose 180 DEG.).

my prob finally solverd-but im having headace due to looking at the screen upside down!but i'm still glad my prob is finally sloved!!

Solve : Wndows fails to start after merging drives?

Answer»

hello good people, i merged 2 drives with Partition Magic to free up space for the OS but when i reboot Windows fails to start. im asked to choose how to start Windows; normal/safe mode etc. but no option starts but just loops back to the beginning again after the Windows XP welcome screen then a flash of the blue screen of death. i checked the HD on a friends LAPTOP using an external case; it still works and the 2 drives are mergedwith all the data in tact. i was adding a HD just before this happened and had the primary HD undocked and did move the computer a little while the HD was just hanging by the cables and running. Did i kill the motherboard? what can i do? THANK you for any advise. robStart saving all of the data from that drive now. Trying to merge partitions that have an operating system on them rarely ever works. You best bet would be to do a clean install. If you dont want to do that, can you give us the blue screen ERROR message?

Tap F8 as the system starts to BOOT - that will take you to a screen with startup options. Choose the one that says Do Not Restart on Error (or something close to that). You should now get the blue screen error to stay up - what EXACTLY does it say?

Solve : Well, this is confusing. Hardware issues? help??

Answer»

But why would 3 hard drives fail to work.....could it be a BAD IDE cable?okay so about the three hardrive:
1. original is PROBABLY fried
2. old one came from a LAPTOP that broke a few years ago(never tested it, so couldn't say if it had bad sectors or not)
3. came from a working computer but as I learned from another forum you cannot PLUG a working HD with an OS from one mobo into another without reinstalling. Bad things.

So pretty much disregard the fact that I 'tried' three hardrives in the computer.

I'm pretty sure that if it were the cable it wouldn't work at all, I find that cables are either an all or none thing.'

EDIT
12 passes with memtest and no errors.

Hardrive for sure? After everything you have done it's CERTAINLY pointing at the HDD.

Solve : dell wireless keyboard and mouse don't work after login screen????

Answer»

my dell with xp is having a problem after it froze yesterday the usb wireless mouse and keyboard appear not to work after the user log-in screen. (or it's operating really slow)

Any help would be greatly appreciated I'm pulling out what LITTLE hair I have left!!!

Thanks,
JoeDo you have a 'wired' keyboard and mouse that you can test with?

How about the batteries, are they charged or replaced?

Not around but I did REPLACE the batteries. the mouse and keyboard are working before the login screen like if I want to restart the computer. Is there a button on the bottom of the keyboard and/or mouse for restoring the connection?tryed all of that. I can't select anything in the startup in the users but the end program window will COME up afetr awhile but I can't move the mouse to click on it. even when position the mouse before it freezes it doesn't click on any thing inside the user. I do have control and it works NORMAL before the login screen.

thanks for your help!!!So you tried the connect button and still no joy?

Can you try the mouse and keyboard on another computer to test them?

They are working when I boot but not inside the users. This all started when my kids had up Itunes and playing Sims if that means anything. If i put in a DVD the program opens but can't move the mouse. This is very frustrating. It sounds like one of your settings was changed.

You may need to borrow a 'wired' keyboard and mouse to fix this.that's my next step. Thanks for the help

JoeNo problem. Let me know how it goes.

Oh, and welcome to CH.OK will doThanks for the help and I got everything working again. I had to make my bluetooth recognise the keyboard and mouse again.

Solve : product code from sticker not working?

Answer»

I was given a seven year old unknown notebook. The sticker on the bottom said MS xp pro. The computer os(xp pro) was basically locked up. So I had an old copy of xp pro from an old build I did years ago. It was my understanding that you could legally install xp if you owned a legal product code for the machine it was being installed on. Which, being the rightful owner of the laptop, I would own a copy of xp. So xp installed correctly, but the numbers on the bottom sticker did not work. They would not work in at any step of the install process.
I did a work around, which I can not comment on. So I am up and running with xp pro. So my main question is why did my product code numbers not work. Maybe there are several types of xp pro, and I needed to install the exact version? My next question is, can I legally downgrade to xp home edition, but still use the product keys on the bottom of the laptop to register. That is to say, will an xp pro product code work for xp home? The version product codes are not swappable...
I'd call MS 800# and have them issue a new code.1. Okay, so he should call Microsoft for a new code to avoid future problems with the operating system installation.

2. Just so I understand what didn't work:
a. What is the brand of the "seven year old unknown notebook"? (I suppose "unknown" truly could mean you don't know.)

b. Does Windows XP Professional sticker on bottom of laptop indicate it's an OEM license?

c. Did you use OEM, Full Retail, or Upgrade Retail Windows XP Pro Install CD?
At what Service Pack Level (original, SP1, SP2, SP3)?

The laptop brand? I tried everything, all I could find was intel processor. Any IDEAS how to find the manufacture?
Oem-I would assume all the stickers on the bottom of laptops are oem license, no? How can you tell the difference?
About five years ago I walked into a bigbox, found windows xp pro and bought it. It came with a whole booklet, yellow sticker, and an orange looking cd with halograms on it. That would be full retail, I am guessing!
Before I call microsoft I need some advice, I really do not want Xp Pro, the sound does not work, I would rather borrow xp home from a friend then call microsoft for a new product code? What is legal? You see, the people around me in life would become uneasy if my computer goes to FLASHING a microsoft warning about authentic copy or something like that. I need everything on the up and up. Is microsoft still selling xp home edition? Maybe I could up the ram and BUY a retail copy of windows 7? Thanks

If the machine liscense is for PRO then that's what needs to be installed on there...
Unless you go buy a retail ver. of XP.
Why do you want Home vs. Pro if i may ask ? ?

As far as being legal as i stated you can borrow an XP Pro CD and re-install...then track down your drivers and install them all...then call MS for a brand new key...

You have 30 days to do all the above and as i said it's all perfectly legal.Home edition instead of pro. I have home edition on my other laptop with no problems ever -for over two years. The xp pro I installed will not produce any sound. From the people I talked too, (google) it seems to be a common problem, one guy claiming he had three different sound cards in his machine with no luck getting sound. I looked at xp pro and saw 36gb of space being taken, I am running linux puppy right now, it takes like 32 MB or something very small. Puppy does everything I need. I would rather loan out the seven year old laptop with windows on it, as opposed to linux , because people are generally more familar with windows os.
Laptops are fast becoming throw away products, the computer guy at the corner wants 150$ to reformat xp pro, when for 300$ I can march down to bigbox and buy a brand new laptop. I would end this discussion and just run Ubuntu except for the simple fact that linux never came up with an install wizard. It is a lot easier to click next than type some crazy set of commands. Also the availability of simple clear cut instructions on how to use linux are greatly lacking, in my opinion. If you want to resuscitate that machine i've instructed you on how to do so...
The sound drivers need to be re-installed when you fix the OS...ie after the fact...
They are NOT different for Home or Pro.

Other than that i don't know what else to tell you.
Your MINI rant on laptops becoming obsolete holds no water...there is no reason to pay a guy down the street $150.00 to do what we've instructed you to do...
All this can be done by you...not the guy down the street ...for Free.

Best of Luck.1. Proprietary Hardware. The "point" you're missing is laptops use proprietary hardware. You may need the audio drivers from the laptop manufacturer's support page. If you can't determine laptop make and model number, look on the motherboard manufacturer's website.

While you're there, look for the "chipset" drivers and any other components your motherboard may include.

Anything else not working... Like the onboard NIC?

Pay attention to the service pack level of your Windows XP Pro installation. Go Start -> right click "My Computer" -> left-click "General" tab -> Should list operating system with service pack level, if any. Any Windows XP problems should be fixed in subsequent service packs.

2. System Component Identification. The following "free" for personal home use software may help identify your laptop components:
Belarc Advisor
EVEREST Home Edition 2.20

3. Sticker Info. For the "detail oriented" individual:
What is a Certificate of Authenticity (COA)?

4. Operating System. I would always choose Windows XP Professional over Home Edition. They use essentially the same software. Professional is just a "superset" of additional features and/or components. No way your operating system installation is using 36 GB. More like 2.0 to 3.5 GB depending on how many service packs you've installed.

5. Call Microsoft... "patio" knows best...

Solve : Problems Installing Factory Settings?

Answer»

I am trying to reinstall my buddies OS on his HP Pavilion. His CD-Rom drive is not working because it got to much dust in it while he was in Iraq so I am doing the installation thru an External CD-Rom drive. It is Windows XP and when I run the recovery disk everything goes fine up until I am instructed to put the second disk in. I hit OK and I GET a ERROR:

Cannot load bitmap x:\i386\system32\res256\banner.bmp

When I click OK the computer turns off and tries to load up to finish the installation, but gets stuck on a blank blue screen and does nothing. I know that it is reading the external drive because verifies the system configuration and then freezes.

Could it be that there are corrupt sectors in the HARD drive? Should I try replacing the hard drive?

When he first gave the computer to me it had so many viruses and corrupt sectors that it would not even allow me to run the installation of and kind of recovery programs.

Please Help

Thank you,
MikeSince restore disks are OEM Preinstall, they include many files that aren't required such as the banner bitmap. If I were you, I'd copy the contents of the CD to a directory, Delete the files in the i386\system32\ folder, excluding NTDLL.dll and SMSS.exe and the other DLLs they may have there.

Reburn the disk and it should work. One more thing, your friend's restore disk will contain a file called WINNT.SIF in the i386 folder. OPEN it in notepad and it should contain the Windows XP Product Key. You can use a different XP disk of the same version and service pack with that product key to skip the OEM Preinstalled OS. HOWEVER, by doing this you'll have to redownload the PC drivers, default software, and firmware.XP fits on one CD...
Where are these disks from and what do they say on them ? ?They are the disks that came with the computer. It is a HP and they say System Recovery on them. It basically states "Insert disk to restore computer back to original manufacture settings". I believe that the first disk is XP and the second disk has the drivers. HP tries to simplify the process for novice users.I think the problem may be that you are trying to install windows from a usb CD drive. Try to use a laser lens cleaner on the computer's CD drive to see if it will read the disks. And gently clean the CD's...
Use a lint-free cloth and wipe out from the center...not in a circular motion.

Which software i con use to do this and from where I can download that software.

please help. Thanks in advanceOffice will install to I:...
However i'd suggest either a larger HDD or re-doing your partition layout.
Windows likes approx 15% total free space on it's partition to function properly.

I can isntall the office in I:. but it copies some files in the C:\ and uses some space in it. Even in future if I want to isntall some big size softwares they will use C:\ also.

So I want to combine the I:\ and C:\

How to do that? pls helpThere are no programs that can combine partitions that have a 100% guarantee of no data destruction.
I suggest backing up anything important...
What is the Total size of this drive ? ?The total size of C:\ is 7GB and I:\ is 5 GB. In C:\ I have only XP installed and in I:\ i dont have anything. it is emptyYou NEED a larger HDD...Forget Microsoft Office. It is rubbish.
I have experienced 3 versions and all of them took a shot at using the Excel macros I wrote on a previous version - took a shot and were 95% successful, which was 100% useless in my role as treasurer of a registered charity.

I strongly recommend free of charge Open Office.
I downloaded OpenOffice from
http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable.

It only takes 230 MB and can be held on a Flash drive, or on your empty drive I:\

I actually have a whole bundle of stuff from Portable Apps, and it only takes 357 MB on my drive H:\.
n.b. It all worked well when Drive H:\ was a partition on my external USB connected hard drive - it is even better since Christmas when the 30 GB internal drive grew to 160 GB and I moved the old partition H:\ to the internal drive.

Okay, clearly that's just a touch biased . MS Office is anything BUT rubbish, even if you're not particularly fond of it I can laugh at the stupid spelling / grammar mistakes Office makes,

But when I have to add CHECKSUMS upon every row and every column of a spreadsheet,
and additionally add together all the horizontal checksums and compare with the sum total of the vertical checksums;
and then run the spreadsheet and printout on each of the computers before I can submit financial reports that may be inspected by charity commissioners,
then I obviously have an untrustworthy tool that could put me in prison.

I even found that when creating a new Excel macro from scratch, using the Excel Wizard, the new macro failed. I read the documentation and discovered the Wizard was NOT incorporating the correct quantity of arguments.

Sorry, but in my view Windows BSODs are the price I pay for using a common operating system in which good quality third party applications can run ! !

Alan
It's been several years ago and several machines ago, but if I remember all the details I had a machine that began life as a W95 machine which had limited support for hard drive space and had 3 partitions. When I upgraded windows I used partition magic to combine all the partitions into one drive and didn't lose any data."Macro's" have sucked in all versions. I just use the VBA editor if I need that type of functionality. (also, it works from office 97 onwards)

"Checksums" wouldn't need a macro, anyway. just a SUM() function, I WOULD imagine.Yes, it was a simple SUM() to get the result.

But it was very tedious that if I had to use a different P.C. I needed to first use a special "test case sample" spreadsheet and print it out and then inspect and compare the 50 or so intermediate checksum results on the new printout with an older printout from a previous computer that seemed to work.

why not use a more compact alternative? We're not here to argue about what Office app he is running...
We're here to solve his issue of running out of drive space consistently. You can use http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ to re-size your partitions. But I would just backup all of the data that you want to save and do a clean install of XP using the whole disk for your C drive.

I've never heard of anything that will do this.Give 'Input Director' a try. I personally haven't used it, but the feature log says...

Quote
- Miror input - Broadcast mouse gestures and keyboard input to all computers simultaneously
- Keyboard MACROS - record a sequence of keystrokes that can then be run by hotkey. Macros can be broadcast to all computers, PLAYED on the system being controlled, or tied to a particular computer

That SHOULD be what you need.

Well, your C: drive is obviously the SYSTEM drive- if I had to guess, I'd say that D: was your optical (CD/DVD) drive, leaving "MYSTERY" E and F drives.

One way- another screenshot- Start->Run "diskmgmt.msc" This should show you all your drives, as well as what kind they are

@smeezekitty: No. Windows was installed twice. D: drive was probably already taken by the optical drive when the second install was made, so when you boot into the first installation it lists the second partition after the optical drive. (drive letter assignment is a bit more confusing with NT then with DOS/9x)- wether E: or F: is the "actual" partition is yet to be seen.F:
may be an external driveHere ya go Got your normal C: drive and the D and E (had a disc in there, hence it said BMT) are both CD Rom drives....then I have normal removable drives that I had in there via USB ports.

so that means that the other entry in boot.ini is simply invalidyes.... speaking of which we never asked... can you boot to the second option?

Just delete the line:

CODE: [Select]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

from your boot.ini and all should be well again. And so I deleted that extra line....and.....she fixed

I think that is what I did the last time ..... now to write down note in case it ever happens again

THANKS!!!! to all of you that helped me sorry to have dragged you on that wild goose chase, always best to be thorough. Oh no...wild goose chase is fine with me I am just happy it fixed now

Now to figure out why out of all my computers, this one doesn't do VoIP well...LOL..but that is for another section to place that in...

Solve : Blue Screen of Death help??

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP right now on another computer, and the "BLUE screen of DEATH" keeps popping up whenever I turn on the computer. When I start it up, it gives me the options of starting Windows in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking, Starting Windows normally, and starting Command Prompt, and the computer will not let me use any of these options; the blue screen pops up every TIME. The error code for the PROBLEM is STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x871519F8, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000), and TELLS me to run CHKDSK/F (which ran the day before this occurred)

Can anyone help me fix this problem? it would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228888Are you sure this will work? Because I can't access safe mode or any of that, so booting from disk should work?Am I sure? There are very few things in life I'm "sure" of my friend. Go ahead and boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r just as Microsoft recommends. If your computer blows up you can always write them a nasty letter. What's the full error message, to start with?

Solve : system recovery-help!?

Answer» RECENTLY i had problems with Win.xp,,,,, friend repaired computer and installed xp-pro in place of xp-home. Now i have lost a lot of factory installed programs. Original manual for comp.says there are no recovery discs because of built in program to reinstall all lost programs. Problem is-- xp-pro only seems to have system restore not system recovery. Will system restore bring programs back or have i lost them forever?Well, your friend put an OS on your computer that we can't support. That is called piracy.

What you can do to remedy this is to call the manufacturer of your computer and ask them to send you the disks for that machine.

They are rumored to charge for this, but I've never been charged for it, or seen anyone else charged for it.
They want your BUSINESS, so it's not really in their best interest to not send them to you.

This will put back the computer back to its original state. lets assume the disk was legal (we dont know that)
how is it piracy if they installed it from a legal disk?

Because it's not meant for that computer, and his key would not work from that disk, so the key was copied.its unlikly but possabe that maybe hask007's friend had a non installed disk laying around
and installed it with a valid unused key
that ould not be piracyTell your friend in case he doesn't realise it that a re-install of Windows wipes out all installed apps and data...THANKS for the input guy's! will try to CONTACT compaq, about getting recovery discs since that is the only option i've been given on this post so far.Is this all i can do?You would be surprised at how easy this will be. Yeah, I'm sure that's exactly what happened...Right. we all know it was illegal

Solve : the display on my laptop dpoesnt come on?

Answer»

When I boot up the computer the display doesnt come on but the lights on the case come on. However when I bend the screen or yank it, the display comes on

One thing I could try is to SEE if there is display on an external monitor when I conect it to the laptop. If so then maybe I just have to toggle the display from the external monitor back to the laptop monitor\

Second thing is that I could open the case and see whether the connector cable is loose.

Is there anything else I can check

That's NOT GOOD at all, and indicates hardware PROBLEMS to the display inside the laptop.

I recommend taking it to a repair shop.

Solve : How can I remotely control another person's computer.?

My brother in law lives in L.A., while I live in Arizona . He calls me frequently when he has a (minor) computer problem and I try to talk him through it via the telephone. We are both running Windows XP. I am not a GERU but I do have a little more experience and I am often (not always) able to help him. I read somewhere (forgotten where ) that there exists a program that can be downloaded free that will allow me to hook up with his computer via the internet (with his permission of course) and I could try to SHOW him what to do rather than TALK him through it. Can any body tell me what this program is and how to link to it? Thanks for looking, JIMGoogle remote desktop.

it is built into XP so no DOWNLOAD.....

I had a problem with Microsoft's remote desktop; I believe it may have been due to my ROUTER. Anyway, if you have problems with it, there are other options, such as TeamViewer, GoToMyPC, LogMeIn, etc. Thank you...... I will give it a go. JIM

Solve : Slow Pcs?

Answer»

Recently I have formatted the Pc of a friend because it was not booting correctly to Windows XP, so I decide to formatted it an reinstall the windows XP. It was fine. Then she had another slow Pc which did boot but when it opens to desktop it will hang up and nothing will work neither mouse nor Keyboard. I couldn’t format like the first Pc. So I wanted to be sure that it was only the hard disk that it was GIVING trouble so I dissembled the hard disk of the first PC and did it with the 2nd one but still it couldn’t boot up...Then I reassembled back the hard disk to the 1st Pc but a problem occurred....

The Ethernet controller was with a question mark and it said... The network card could not be configured error (code 01) I tried to download the D-link 530-tx Driver but it didn’t work (cause I checked the network card)
Then I decided to reformat the hard disk and reinstall the windows and I also changed the PCI slot for the network card...

with the result that the computer seems to be slower than ever... what could be the culprit of this slowness...even to make the installation it took ages and even to SHUT down it is taking ages...and it didn’t let me see the properties of the computer itself how slow it was so I decided to switch it of an try 2morrow.

Help me please....I am also wondering of the 2nd Pc what it might have gone wrong (something with the hardware) can you SUGGEST a good software to identify the a hardware problem and deduct if it is malfunctioning

Thanks in advance

Re-install the MBoard chipset DRIVERS...
Then re-install the network card and any other device drivers needed.please mention the configuration of the system. it might be because of using high configuration hard disk with an older motherboard.you disassembled the harddrive?
older MB I dont think so.... and I did not dissamble the hardisk, I have just got a hard drive from the 1st PC connect it to the 2nd PC which have the same MB...I still have to download the chipset drivers for the MB of thhe 1st PC... the 2nd one if i will not have the right tools I will not know the cause becuse it has more than one problem at least thats what its giving me

Thanks for your help

Solve : reformatting problem:unknown disk, there is no disk in the drive?

Answer»

When I attempt to reformat my computer, we reach what should be the partitions screen, but INSTEAD of listing all the partitions, we get the error message "unknown disk. there is no disk in the drive". Is this a problem with the HARDWARE's ability to detect the HARD disks? Or is this a problem with a required DRIVER?

Our CISNET computer motherboard model is A8R-MX, and our processor is AMD Athlon 64 processor 3700+.

Please help!Which Os is it? and is it the first TIME you are formatting it?The current OS, as well as the OS we are attempting to reformat it with, is Windows XP Professional. We have reformatted with the same OS, same disk, on this computer, and there had been no problems. This is the first time we encountered this problem.download a dos 6.22 boot disk
and format with that
then use windows XP disk to reformat to FAT32 or NTFSSo you're trying to reformat your Hard Drive and reinstall XP?

It should be as simple as booting off the XP CD and formatting the HDD.

Ive been having problems recently with my desktop in that it has been randomly capitalizing my typed text. This alone is very annoying but it isn"t a stand alone problem, since whenever this happens I also have several other annoying bugs:

I've ran several virus/malware scans using AVG, Spybot S&D and CCleaner which I run regularly and that has not seemed to fix anything so I don't think that this is a virus problem

It was hard to even type this short post with minimal errors. I've noticed that these problems won't start up immediately when I begin using my desktop but after an hour or so of typing If i restart it will still bE PREseNt AfterWArd. I"D really appreciate some kind of help as this is very frustrating Did you make any hardware or software changes right before this started? No I dont think ive made any significant changes to any hardware software for a while Have you tried doing a system restore to before the problem started?

When was the last time you blew the dust out of your computer with a can of compressed air?

TURN the computer off
unplug keyboard and mouse
plug them back in turn computer back on
and have you hot pluged PS/2 ?
i hope not
overheating is doubtful to cause that but download speedfan and report the tempsJJ
- No, I've never system restored, I don't really know what point I would have to go back to before this problem started. I don't think I could anyway, since I use CCleaner and EVIDENTLY that deletes your System Restore points?
- It's been a really long time, evidently. I opened up my tower and blew it out and it was just insanely dusty. I was shocked. I did my keyboard and mouse while I was at it as well.

Smeezekitty
- I UNPLUGGED everything, when I disconnected my tower to clean it out.
- I didn't know what 'hotplugging' meant so I had to look it up. Plugging in your keyboard after starting Windows? No, it's always plugged in and I've never really yanked it out/plugged it in without shutting down first.
- Okay, I installed SpeedFan. I'll post the main readings:

GPU: 55C
Temp1: 40C
Temp2: 48C
HD0: 33C
Temp 1: 48C
Core: 55C
Ambient: 0C

It's probably worth noting that GPU and Core both had a flame icon next to the temperature readout.

only 2 things left i can think of is
driver or some kind of teaseing malwareHave you cleaned your keyboard?Yeah, I cleaned out the keyboard when I was doing the tower. The keyboard was also fairly disgusting. I'm going to feel really stupid if this incredibly irritating problem was a result of me not cleaning out my comp. : u

So far, no problems after the cleaning, but they probably wouldn't of shown up by now even if they were still present. I should know by tonight, after it's been actively running and I've been typing for a while. You may have a faulty switch on one of your shift keys. If it's still a problem try a new keyboard.

Absolutely. That's what trouble shooting is all about. One of the first things I did was try using a new keyboard, but the problem persisted, so I don't think that it would be a faulty switch.

I'm not going to have time tonight, but tomorrow afternoon I'll run sfc/scannow, and then post up what the results are.

I thought of a parallel install, but I don't know if your system drive is large enough. If you have room to install the OS anywhere on your system go ahead and try.I have more than enough space in the drive to install another windows
now, how can I uninstall the broken windows xp?Don't uninstall it. Do what we call a parallel install - install a second instance of XP then grab the files you NEED from the drive and copy them to an off disk medium. Then you can reformat and start from scratch, which you really need to do. okay, I already save the data in my hard drive
now, how should I reformat the windows?PLEASE be more clear on what your goal for this machine is...
You're bouncing around and trying to get this done yesterday....this normally does not produce good results...

How did you backup ? ?You saved it to SOMETHING other than your hard drive, right? Let's assume so.

Boot to your XP CD and start the install process. Choose C: Drive as the destination and you'll be offered the OPTION to format first. Take that option.THANK you very much for helping me.

Iam not able to follow your 2nd advice!?

Boot.ini is NOT required to boot your system when your OS is installed at C:\Windows which yours is. NTLDR is programmed to AUTOMATICALLY boot to the OS at C:\Windows if Boot.ini is not found. In Windows 2000 the OS would of course be at C:\Winnt. All that's lost is the ability to select which OS to load in a multi-booting environment which you don't want.

NTLDR is clever enough to also issue the advisory message "Invalid Boot.ini file - booting from C:\Windows"

As CC says ignore me, but I'd put a six-pack on it that he's not tried deleting or renaming Boot.ini just to check that's true, but it makes it easier later on to add switches to the boot line...

after all... the ones listed are not the defaults that would be used without a ini file. Thanks Guys!

Can someone please tell me that on how CC is able to decipher my Computer's IP Address, ISP name & the Browser used by me?!

GIGABYTE EP43-UD3L motherboard
INTEL PENTIUM E7600 Core2 Duo 3.06GHz, core 45nm, fsb 1066 MHz, L2 Cache 3MB, socket 775

Early on in the setup process you will see aprompt at the bottom of the screen stating "PRESS F6 to install additional drivers"...do that.
Then insert your MBoard driver CD and it will pickup and install the SATA drivers and continue the install...I would set the BIOS to default settings.
If that didn't help...
I would test the memory

If the memory passes, I would try a different data cable for the hard drive and run hard drive diagnsotics.

I changed the AHCI to DISABLED AND used the Western Digital diagnostic tools AND installed the drivers for SATA by downloading from the Gigabyte mb disk to a removable little 2GB usb drive. I PUT the usb in the back and also inadvertently used WINDOWS XP HOME s/p2, (which is an upgrade!) and I didnt realize it had downloaded past the point I had been stuck @ for 3 1/2 weeks.

One thing though, with AHCI disabled, my dvd/cdrw isnt listed in boot first list but SHOWS in the cmos. When AHCI is enabled the dvd is listed where you can select it to boot at whatever position AND you will get the 0x0000007E blue screen error again.

That was truly a headache but I gotta say THANKS to JJ3000, patio, dahlarbear and the 'BC Programmer' who simply said, "I can guarantee, this is related to SATA."
you could try looking in your BIOS and change your SATA settings to "compatible" instead of "AHCI" or whatever it may be; or try installing the drivers via F6 during setup again.

SO im up and running and grateful, Thank you ALL!!

Solve : Running a series of silent installs?

Answer»

I've created silent INSTALLS for Lotus NOTES, Office 2003, IBM iSeries, and a few others. Is there a way I can run them all at once, or at least in sequence? Is there a command that will have a command wait or pause until the current setup is through RUNNING? Unfortunately I don't have too much experience in RunOnceWhat OS ? ?

Solve : Trying to install WinXp but having problems...?

Answer»

I have a formatted hard drive and i'm wanting to install WinXp, but im having problems getting the install CD to run. Since its formatted do i need to use a WinXP boot CD and copy the cd-rom drivers back on to it for it to load the CD? When you start your computer, it should display a BUTTON to press to get to the "setup" or bios. make sure the boot order places highest priority on the cdrom drive.

ANOTHER concern would be the type of xp install disc as a quick restore disc won't work. The Bios was set as: Cd-Rom, A: Drive, Hard Drive. But the last time i tried it, it tried to access it but then said 'invalid system disk' and wouldn't let me do anything else. another thing. check that the cd is clean (no dirt or something on the side of the disk that your computer drive should be reading .......). Just a thought that came to mind ... The CD's still in good shape and i've used it before, but since i'm trying to install it on a blank HD its GIVING me *censored*! I've got a disk to let me boot to ms-dos but when i try to change over the Cd drive which should be X if im not mistaken it says invalid drive letter. Could it be cause theres no cd rom driver?A disk to let you boot to MS-DOS, is that a floppy disk?

If you do have a floppy disk drive, maybe you want to see the FOLLOWING links.

1. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=55820edb-5039-4955-bcb7-4fed408ea73f&displaylang=en
2. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E8FE6868-6E4F-471C-B455-BD5AFEE126D8&displaylang=en

Both are supposed to allow you to make new installations of the operating system on computers without bootable cd drives. (On above link, I believe one is for Home edition of XP, other is for Professional edition of XP, get whatever matches your official XP CD you have)

Hopefully this may work for you Hey i wanted to say thanks. I think thats exactly what i was looking for but the bad thing is i dont have 6 floppy's!! Arrrgh this is gonna kill me.no problem. But I think floppy disks are actually pretty cheap, at least on EBAY it is.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview
Brief Description
Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all PREVIOUSLY released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of NEW FUNCTIONALITIES, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system. This WHITE paper summarizes what is new in Windows XP SP3. You can obtain Windows XP SP3 from Windows Update, at http://update.microsoft.com.

That should include RTM. You can't slpstream SP3 into an XP CD with anything less than SP1...So what you are saying is that I need to get my XP CD RTM and slip stream sp1 to that and then with that SP1 XP RTM cd slip stream SP3 to the XP SP1 RTM CD to get a good XP Pro SP3 RTM? Yes.

Hopefully there is a solution...i didn't read the whole thread.

I cant tell what half of the references mean though because i'm not that clued up on adjusting voltages and timinings, etc.
I may well have to accept that i've wasted money on ram that doesn't work and end up building a new system. Thanks MSI!

Solve : Copying to cd?

Answer»

As of late, I am unable to copy files to a cd DISK. I have a DVD drive and a CD/RW. My OS is XP. Various CD based programs will work in both drives so the drives are working. I have attempted to use both the Windows copy device via "send to" and drag, drop and copy methods and also my installed "Nero" burn program. When attempting to copy files onto DISKS, the message boxes indicate that there is no disk and I am instructed to insert one even THOUGH one is already in the drive. When reinserted, it will still not be recognized. Any thoughts? It's possible, though highly unlikely that your blank disks are bad, you do get more bad one's in the spools than if you pay a little more and get brand name.

It sounds like the optical drive is failing, is there a known GOOD one that you can put in your computer to check with?
They are cheap to buy, but I would rather save you money if it can be helped.

Solve : Aurocad RevitStructure Crashes in XP with 3 GB switch?

Answer»

i've system with 4 GB Ram,250 GB HDD,Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset Fmily DISPLAY adaptor.
As per the AUTOCAD SUPORT instruction, i'v modified the boot.ini with 3 GB switch to create
XP Profile named as "Windows XP Professional 3 GB". I've been use this dual xP Profile.
For Revit2010, i've been using the 3GB XP Profile, it was working fine three days. Suddenly the 3GB Profile shows error while windos loading theProfile, After enters any username password
showing following Error:
"Windows cannot create a Temporary Profile. This might caused by Insufficient security previleges." Also the system is HANGING whenver i tried with 3 GB Profile. So ive to mnually shutdon, after i power on system CHKDSK is running in E drive and C drive. I've set the Virtual memory in E drive as 8 GB for this system has 4 GB as Physical memory. Even i changed the virtual memory location to F drive which has enough free space, the 3 GB xp Profile.

could yoy anyone working on this ISSUE and revert back. Thanks have a nice day.

Sorry, no quick answer.
Earlier I had read through the material from MS about the 3GB switch as it applies to XP. I cane to my private conclusion that MS does not wish to give much support to this feature.

Have you checked in at the AutoDesk Forums ? ?
Perhaps someone there has found a solution...

Solve : Odd screen problem, can't describe?

Answer»

I understand that...I don't need anyone telling me I need an English lesson; simply indicating my misinterpretation of the dictated procedure would suffice.I will confine myself to remarking mildly that possibly ubermensch (the name alone inspires a certain degree of dislike) has misspelled his screen name, (and I don't just mean the MISSING umlaut) since only untermenschen whine GIRLISHLY in the face of sarcasm, particularly the imagined kind.
I wasn't whining. I was joking around. I figured "English Lesson" was sarcasm, so I responded with such. no whining there. And the proper spelling is indeed Übermensch. It is a concept of Nietzschen philosophy.Quote from: ubermensch on August 14, 2009, 01:59:34 PM

So did many others, but that doesn't change the philosophy in the slightest. Any group can assimilate it in some way into their own belief SYSTEM, it doesn't phase the essence of the idea. There is nothing negative about being driven to overcome our conditions and shortcomings.GUYS! This is a thread in the Windows section. Not a section for philosophy. If you wish to argue about that sort of thing, go to the off topic section. Or even better, could a moderator SPLIT this thread?haha, I said something like that before. Solve : Is It possible to...??

Answer»

I am still fighting with tryin to recover my old user profile destop folders. is it possible to TAKE an image file of my C DRIVE and reformat then when I have more time run search and recover4 to find my old files from the image file? I want to reformat now becase i need my computer and can try to recover the files later. I know that reformating will cause the computer to overwrite the old files thats why i was wondering if the IMage file would save EVERYTHING from the Hard drive.. Just a thought. Do a search for "free data RECOVERY software" There are several products that might work. If the data is valuable buy a new hard drive and reinstall windows to get your computer going until you can recover the data on the old drive. If you reformat the old drive all files will be lost.I wouldn't recommend doing that.

Back up your files to another MEDIA. That is fool proof. Recovery isn't.

Solve : Can't Locate C:/WINDOWS folder?

Answer»

This is pretty scary for me because I know this folder's pretty darn IMPORTANT. When I came home tonight, I noticed that something wasn't quite right with my folders in my C drive. My uncle, who isn't that computer savvy, used my internet while I was gone and he said he used task manager to shut down the computer, but it didn't do it fully, so I came home to nothing but my desktop's wallpaper and nothing else--that's what got me to notice the missing WINDOWS folder. He told me he didn't delete anything, so I have no idea how to get this thing back.

Other than that, everything seemed functional. I know there's a Fonts folder in WINDOWS and I was still able to use Open Office and all of its fonts. So the folder may just be hidden. I really don't know. I just hope I don't have to do anything drastic.

Help please?

- Raevenwell, if you have the system restore always on, and there is a recent restore point just before today when your uncle used your computer, you can try using that.

At the very worst, either nothing will have changed or you restore back to an earlier time. But if you successfully restore to an earlier time and decide that it's no good and want to undo the restoration, you can do that too. That's the first thing I did, and for some reason, I press Next on the FINAL stage of System Restore, to actually RUN the restart and everything, and it doesn't want to go on. Shady, but I haven't tried it again, so maybe I will now. Thank you. xD maybe you want to boot into safe mode and then reattempt the system restore procedure to see if that works Quote

If Windows will start and is working correctly, then the C:\Windows folder is definitely there, and not only that, it still contains the files and subfolders necessary for Windows to work properly.

So, have you tried these steps?

Control Panel | Folder Options | View -

1. check the radio button "Show hidden files and folders"

2. uncheck the box "Hide protected operating system files"

3. click Apply

4. click OK.

*sigh* That did the trick. Thank you so much! I learned something new. xDglad you had it working.I was already wondering why that folder was missing if windows was loading properly, as windows folder contains the windows system files anyway.
