Solve : Microsoft Word semi-uninstalled itself??

Answer»

Recently, to clear up some space on my C drive I DELETED some log files. According to my research, this was supposed to be FINE. But now I'm having Word problems. For the record, I have Windows XP, and Microsoft Office XP Proffessional.

I clicked on the icon, and the program launches, and I can see my Auto Recover files...but then an installer comes up. It starts, then tells me to INSERT the Office disk. The computer and its parts were bought years ago from my uncle, so I do not have the disk. ANYONE have any IDEA what might be wrong?

Solve : Can't install Service Pack 3?

Answer»

Running XP Pro on a 1.9 GHz Pentium 4 with 512 MB Ram. Could not get USB 2.0 to work. Contacted the motherboard MANUFACTURER (Gigabyte) and they said to install SP3 and EVERYTHING will be fine. Downloaded it to disc on a broadband connected computer and tried to open (install) the ISO file on my computer and get a message saying what do want to open the file with. Tried browsing but came up with zilch. Thanks for any help. An .iso file is an image that needs to be BURNED to cd. Use your burning software to create a cd, then run that cd to do the service pack installation.SP3 boots from a DVD and expects to find a working XP version already on the hard drive.
sear for SP3 info on:

You can install WINDOWS XP SP3 from a "CD".

Solve : Stumped - Help??

Answer»

Hey all I think this is probably one of the first times I'm posting in a forum for help with computers. I've worked with computers since I was about four or five. I typically manage my to figure things out on my own by searching forums and the all around the interwebs

Anyways, right now I own a Dell XPS M1530. 1.8Ghz dual-core, 3 gigs ram, running windows vista (blah) at the moment.

I've installed numerous OS's on different machines, many times and have never really had a problem untill now. I'm trying to load Windows XP Pro SP3 on this laptop, and it keeps giving me the " Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disc..... " error.

Now, I'm the kind of person that hates errors like this, there is clearly a hard drive present because I just got done downloading & burning a fresh *censored* windows xp installation onto my hard drive, then from my hard drive onto a cd.

I looked around and found some answers, tried somenm things - No luck.
I found a topic on some forums that the windows xp installation disc doesn't have the DRIVERS for my SATA drive or something and that I could either: Switch my HDD settings in my bios to IDE, or get a floppy disc and load the drivers onto it and have the windows cd get my HDD drivers from there.

Well, I don't have a floppy drive, especially not on a laptop as new as this. And my bios settings limit me from changing my SATA drive mode to either "ADHI" or "ADH" or something, no IDE or RAID mode..

If anyone can help me out that would be freakin awesome, so I don't waste any more of my life trying to figure this out. I've been trying to do this honestly, for about 6 or 7 hours now and I'm real frustrated.

Thankyou.I am no expert, but I would use another PC and find the driver and download and save it (do not run) then find the saved driver package and send it to the CD Drive to copy. You can then run it on the laptop. I hope this helps.
HubertThanks for the quick response, but that didn't really help. What do you mean by "send it to the CD Drive to copy" ?

I found this post, which is pretty much where I'm at:

http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19257198/19426423.aspx#19426423

So i'll get back to this topic after I try this "nLite" program to create a custom installation.Quote from: Gen0 on August 13, 2009, 05:24:22 PM

That could be your problem.

Possibly, but not. It's straight off the microsoft online download site.

Here's where I'm stuck. Any help appreciated -

I'm at the Windows XP Pro installation screen, after you format your drive and create partitions and whatnot. And It's asking me to insert the windows xp professional cd into my drive, and I do. It then it says:

"The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed"

What do I do?
At this point I don't care if I go back to vista I need some help - I must have my laptop tonight.
I've tried inserting a vista cd and booting from that cd, but a little white line blinks in the top left CORNER and then it goes straight back to the windows xp pro installation.

Anything will help - please?Microsoft has an online Download site for XP ? ?

Link Please ?So I asked myself, "Self, what if Patio is wrong? What if there is a site where you can legally download Windows XP?" So, I made my self, after much whining, perform a search of the Internet.
Our good friend Leo Notenboom informs us HERE, in much nicer prose, that there's no such thing.

I, too, now await developements.

The service pack. not the whole operating system.

Awesome program. But you'll still need a full xp disc. It's nice how we have to "battle" over where I downloaded the operating system rather than getting some decent support - shows how helpful these forums actually are.

My father works for Cox COMMUNICATIONS, they have a partnership with Microsoft - He has an MSDN account where he can download ANY microsoft OS or software ever created as well as all of the DEVELOPER tools and whatnot.

So yes, I did in fact download it from the microsoft site.

Now please, can I get some assistance rather than badgering back and forth where I downloaded my copy of windows?
have you read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311755 ? I personally haven't, but MAYBE it has some answers. You need to understand our perspective...
Being a popular Help Forum we hear all kinds of tales of woe in a Topic that will stretch 4 or 5 pages with everyone genuinelly willing to help only to find that so and so is using a black DLoaded version of whatever OS.....

So had you stated that first you would not have gotten the responses you did.

I understand, and I do apologize for not realizing that. I can assure you that none of my copies of windows are "black DLoaded versions"

I think I found my problem. I've been using DVD-RW's to save cds. I'm going to try booting with a DVD-R and let you know how that goes. I'm going to feel like an idiot if that works.Don't feel bad if it works...they use 2 different dyes in the product...

Solve : Recovery partition and hard drive failure?

Answer»

I have a HP PC with the OS recovery on a separate partition and the disk is now DEAD. No way of booting to the disk or reading from it. All kinds of errors that say the hard drive has failed. I tryed rocovery console to fix the boot and MBR. Still no luck. My ? is if I were to replace the drive and wanted to reinstall XP, could I use an XP setup disk from a friend and use the activation key thats on the side of the tower and still be legal?
Thanks, TomI believe so, it's really the key your paying for and not the disc.

1. Recovery Console. How far did you get with "Recovery Console"? Did it give you a "command" prompt from which you could "map" the drives and/or access the %systemroot" directory and subdirectories?

2. Hard Drive Dead. Since you didn't provide any "specific" symptoms or error messages, it's difficult for us to know if the drive is "dead". (I do realize your question was regarding product key/install CD compatibility - I'm just saying...).

You could test the hard drive using the "free" bootable diagnostic software most hard drive manufacturers provide as a "download" on their support web site.Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 13, 2009, 09:26:47 PM

Agreed !Within the last few days, an article was referenced that an OEM Windows XP Install CD would only accept an "OEM" product key, and a Retail Windows XP Install CD would only accept a "Retail" product key - unless you modified the CD image?

I'm not sure what the deal is with a Volume License Windows XP Install CD. My guess is, it would only accept "Volume License" product keys.

Anybody want to change their answer?I have SEVERAL XP images and they all accepted any key I threw at them. WELL, except for the upgrade keys, since I was doing a clean install. Let's not go into detail of where I got the keys, though, OK?

An "Upgrade" CD will even accept any other XP key for the non-upgrade edition... the problem being that most upgrade discs aren't bootable to begin with, so you need an OS to start the install anyway.... but using it you can enter the non-upgrade key (be it VLK or retail) and perform a clean install, an option not available using the "upgrade" key.

Quote
Volume License Windows XP Install CD

the thing is- there is no "Volume License" XP install CD- a "Volume license" is issued to manufacturers, Dell, Toshiba, HP and so on so that they may preinstall XP into the PCs without having to go through the standard activation process- they are "preactivated" in a way. "volume license" discs simply aren't produced.

they key word of the title of the link you provided is "OEM Restore Disks"- an OEM restore disc is simply not an XP CD in the general sense- but a recovery Disc. for all intents and purposes it is not a "windows" CD.I've tryed to do a recovery through hard drive diagnostic software but no luck. The hard drive makes a loud CLACKING sound when it appears to access info from it. I was able to get it to boot for about 5 MINS. till I got the dreaded blue screen. The POST errors stated that the hard drive was in fact failed and I tryed to see if I could at least retreive files from it on a working computer, but it was like it had no filing system on it. In MMC disk management it said it was healthy but not formated. I tryed fixmbr and fixboot in recovery console and they seemed to find that what was on it was corrupt and that it successfully fixed them. If anyone has a suggestion as to how I could recover pics and whatnot off of the dead drive, I would appreciate it very much.
Thanks, Tom Slave Drive Tutorial

I suggest doing this as soon as possible...the noise you're hearing is probably the dreaded "clik of death"....the sound of an imminent HDD failure.Quote from: tommcat1208 on August 13, 2009, 09:10:07 PM

If you can get the "...activation key thats on the side of the tower ..." to work (and successfully activate), I don't think anyone would come after you.

I'm having a little trouble wrapping my mind around this problem (don't have the luxury or resources to go try it), but here's another link regarding Using an OEM Key.It's really quite simple...if you have a valid key it should work...

If it does not work all it takes is a call to MS's 800#...Thanks for all the help peeps! I now wait for the new disk to arrive and we will see if all goes well.

Solve : Windows XP on Dell Inspiron 6000 computer & Epson 595 'All In One' printer?

Answer»

Printing from COMPUTER is no problem. Can I PUT a document on the glass of the printer and have the image transferred to my computer, and ultimately send this image to someone?Yes, there should be an option of 'print to file"or "scan to file".Because you will be SCANNING this document, remember that it will be a picture of that document. NOBODY, including you, can modify that image unless you RUN OCR(Optical Character Recognition) software on it to turn it into a document again. Until you run OCR on it, it's only a picture of the document.

Solve : Tweaking the Registry?

Answer»

This post is about a page from Tweaks.com ( www.tweaks.com/articles/36746/brand-your-copy-of-windows-xp/ ). I am slightly concerned with the code. I am not familiar in the least with how to modify the registry via code and this is totally boggling me. I just want to make sure that the code does as it says it does. Can anyone look at it and confirm what it does?I am the forum admin at tweaks.com and I can assure you that we check all tweaks before posting them. However, if you want to be safe you should always create either or both a disk image and a registry backup before making a major registry change.Yeah, ALWAYS BACKUP first!

Solve : tray icon width?

Answer»

does anyone know how to change the width of a particular tray icon? namely weather pulse. it has settings to change font size but not the width, so you increase font size and the text gets cut off. the only method I can find is making all the icons bigger from desktop - properties - appearance - advanced - active title BAR. is there another option? maybe some registry keys I could add? preferably only modifying the width of weather pulse.I don't think so, you can change the minimum width, but that will change all taskbar button widths

http://www.gammaphase.net/q14168.htm

Now, we are talking about the taskbar button? or are we talking about a system notification icon?system notification icon. thank you, though, I tried exactly what that link said earlier today thinking it was what I was looking for. it's STRANGE that it'd have a FEATURE to increase font size but not icon width. ah, it sucks that the developer no longer provides support for it on his site. I guess not enough weather pulsers to answer questions. I'm having another problem with it not opening in the tray at startup (it opens hidden), even though the settings say to show the tray icon and open at startup. meh. I'm trying to find a low resource weatherbug alternative.Ahh, System notification icon- but, they are all just icons??? Or, am I to understand that it displays the weather information within that icon?

Either way- there is a way, as you said, to change the icon size globally, but there isn't a way- even for the program - to change the size itself. Although I suppose if they wrote it to use multiple icons and span the information across those icons it would be doable, they would have to write it that way.

Personally- I use ForecastFox, since I almost always have my browser open. That's not what I'd call a "low-resource" alternative though, what with requiring firefox to be running and all )

well, it seems to be two icons, one for the temp and one for the sky conditions. it's funny that it has a checkbox to "test 102 F"... which only shows half an 0 and a 2, but it does have an option to cut off the 1 in the program... even though it's already cut off. seems the developer may have been working on it, maybe they still do from time to time.

but yeah, the computer's actually set up for someone else. Personally, I only use windows for gaming, so my system tray is just bare essentials. of course, the gnome applet for weather forecasts is extremely low resource, as most things linux are. their system, though, when I started, took at least 15 minutes to boot. no joke. and about 5 to shut down. it was disgusting. now it shuts down immediately and takes about 5 to boot, most of which is a result of the Norton Antivirus suite, but I really don't think there's much else I can do while maintaining all the automation for them.Try weather underground...weather underground is a good suggestion, but, from their site at least, only has a vista widget. they are using firefox on their computer though, so I think I'll look into forecastfox and see if that'll be acceptable for them, and HOPEFULLY that'll influence their boot time somewhat.Gotcha...
I had thought they had an XP widget/plugin...You could always edit the icon manually with a graphics program.Quote from: Quantos on August 15, 2009, 05:31:24 PM

You could always edit the icon manually with a graphics program.

err... I don't think so, I think the icon is generated by the program dynamically. Additionally even if one was able to edit ihe icon to increase it's width it would still appear in the system tray at the same size.Have you tried it?Quote from: Quantos on August 15, 2009, 09:44:55 PM
Have you tried it?
have you ever used Shell_notifyIcon and gotten it to use a non-standard size? Because I sure haven't, since it always resizes it to the shell icon size. "editing" the icon to change the size won't work. Even IF they could edit the icon, which they can't, since in the same manner as SpeedFan and whatnot, they generate the icon on the fly, so there's nothing to edit anyway.Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 15, 2009, 09:51:13 PM

it would be, if the icon wasn't generated dynamically... for say the windows icons, like the network/sound and so forth, you can edit the resources and change the icons- but to my understanding this is a weather applet that generates the icon on the fly to show current weather conditions and temperature. And even so, the notification API will resize the icon to the shell icon size.

Solve : Help with Booting up.?

Answer»

Ok recently i had some computer problems. So i decided To Do PC Recovery on The boot up menu.
I did that and i selected Factory Default Settings (didn't care for my FILES).
When it started the PC Recovery I NOTICED it was acting up. It Did not count the TIME it was running.
And about 37% complete, it said "less than a minute Remaining" So I know it Wasn't going to do it correctly.
When it finished I clicked to button to restart my computer. Then it loads and then it asks to me select my county. I did then it starts to load The Microsoft Windows XP screen, Then it Could stay on that screen for hours.
I let it do this for about 2 Hours and nothing.
Then i Restarted the computer To give it another go. then i GET a ERROR "The system is not fulling installed. Run the setup again" And I've done this process about 3 times.
and i cant do safe mode or anything cause it removed the files in PC recovery and Hasn't finished the full setup.
and I have no setup disc.

Any ideas? You say the reason for the wipe was that you had some problems. What were they?

What is the brand and model of your computer?Well i just noticed it had slow boot ups, and my laptop would just randomly Disconnect From the wireless.
And Compaq.

Solve : Xp recovery CD Error?

I recently installed WINDOWS vista on my laptop, but just after i did so i changed my mind and wanted it back to XP. So i inserted the Acer System disk into my Acer travelmate 4650 and it boot the cd just fine, i follow the instructions and insert the recovery CD and the computer reboots. When it boost up it asks me if i really want to install Windows XP on my computer, i PRESS ok the computer STARTS to load but then i get the error messege from ''Norton Ghost'' ( something like that, not so sure of the name) the messege is saying: Usage error, Not enough room on target partition.
Please, i don't know what to do or whats the cause :/ Hope you guys can help me out!
Thanks!Using the Acer CD once XP setup starts you should see an OPTION to delete and re-create the partition...this step needs to be done.

Warning all your data will be GONE so make your backups first. From what i can see i do not get this option, when i boot up with the system CD it will only display some information about the computer and the operating system and then the CD will load :/

Solve : My big mission.?

Answer»

Hey everyone,
First i would like to say thank you for haveing a Forum where people can post their computer problems and questions.

My Problem.

A couple of months ago i Bought a barebone kit and a Windows XP upgrade for my own personal use.
I got everything but together and started the task of installing Windows. Since this was my first build i started by putting my XP update disk in, It then asked me to install a previous version of Windows. The only disk i had for previous was 98. So it install all that, then it would not boot into 98. So i just kept on going into installing XP. while copying the FILES over the first time it kept saying certain files could not be copyed. These files are as followed:

dvdplay.exe
kodak_dc.icm
mdwmdmsp.dll
nikedrv.sys
rio8drv.sys
spnike.dll ni
sprio600.dll
sprio800.dll
srgb.icm

At that point i thought maybe it was a dirty disk. So i stoped the install and cleaned the disk with a clean rag and started the install again. This time it went through most of the files until it reached the sprio600.dll. Then i left it installing and kept track of the files it could not copy. As follows:

sprio600.dll ni. - same
sprio800.dll ni - same
srgb.icm ni - same
streamci.dll
tosdvd.sys
tsbvcap.sys
tsbyuv.dll
usbcamd.sys
usbcamd2.sys
vdmindvd.sys
wowfax.dll
wowfaxui.dll
fsvga.sys
paqsp.dll
usrcntra.dll
usrcoina.dll
usrdpa.dll
usrdtea.dll
usrfaxa.dll
usrlbva.dll
usrmlnka.exe
usrprbda.exe
usrrtosa.dll
usrsdpia.dll
usrshuta.exe
usrsvpia.dll
usrv42a.dll
usrv80a.dll
usrvoica.dll
usrvpa.dll

When that was finished. It would boot and run, but it crashes about everytime you try to install anything.

My question is: Is there anyway i could get these files back into my System32 file and have it working?
You need to check that everything is assembled correctly, especially that the RAM is both seated correctly and compatible with the motherboard, and that the disks are in good condition and not scratched, and definitely legal, licensed, pressed (not burnt) disks. That "files not copying thing" often means a RAM problem, or it could be disk damage.

I have noticed VERY fine scratches in the disk. The ram is seated correctly and it is compatible with my motherboard. I was able to run Ubuntu very well on the machine but i need my Photoshop and web design programs. Quote

definitely legal, licensed, pressed (not burnt) disks

Bought it from Academic Superstore. It is a legal disk.

Everytime i reinstall XP there will be different files that wont copy.Either the CD is dirty/scratched or the CD drive is dirty. Try a different CD drive. If that doesn't work you will probably need a new CD.

The local used record store in my town has a machine that polishes CDs. It looks like a shoe buffer. They charge fifty cents to buff and polish scratched CDs. I've taken a few down that were so scratched that they wouldn't even play and they were able to buff all of the scratches out and they looked and played like new after that.

If you have a used record store close by, take the disk to them and see if they can polish it for you. They should be able to, as long as their aren't any big scratches on the top of the disk. It might save you a lot of money.

Good Luck!Quote from: JJ 3000 on August 16, 2009, 12:19:31 AM

Worth a try, sure, but CD polishing is much more likely to make an audio CD usable once more, where the result of partially reading a block of data is quite possibly just a faint click, than a data CD-ROM where every byte matters.

A faint click?Quote from: JJ 3000 on August 16, 2009, 01:38:40 AM
A faint click?

Or a tick or a pop or something inaudible. (Is there a problem?)

I don't understand what you are trying to say.
Quote

Can you explain what that means? Are you referring to the disk or the read/write head or the arm or what? I don't get it.
If you do mean the disk, then what click or pop? Are you talking about the pits and lands on the surface of the disk or do you mean an audible click?Quote from: JJ 3000 on August 16, 2009, 01:58:49 AM

The process of reading data from optical disks whether audio CDs or data DVD or CD-ROMs and -RWs incorporates error recovery. The chipset in an CD-audio player tries to "rebuild" the data from a damaged block. If the damage is slight, or the dirt or GREASE on the disk is not too thick, the person LISTENING to the music may not hear anything unusual through the speakers, just the music they were expecting to hear. Of course it may not be possible to completely mask the effect of the errors, and then the listener may hear a slight indication, such as a 'tick' or 'pop' or even a skip. In general the player will just carry on playing. (Until the next error if there is one. Surely you have heard a 'bad' CD?) However, an optical drive in a computer will signal an unrecoverable error to the operating system and the entire file being read at the time is regarded by the OS as not READABLE. Okay. I (kind of) get it now.
I still think that he will have luck installing XP if he polishes the CD. As long as there are no scratches on the top he should be okay. Also a new optical drive will do a much better job reading a scratched or damaged disk.

1. Why do you ask?
2. What do you think?

(If anybody is wondering what country I am a native of, a quick Google for my screen name plus another of the names in my sig, and the number in my sig e.g. "Salmon Trout Lemberg 4472", will surely tell.)

Solve : Acer Aspire M5641 Audio Problem?

Answer»

I have recently done a clean install of XP on an ACER M5641 machine.
I was able to make a custom XP install USING information from http://komku.blogspot.com/2009/01/aspire-m1641-m3641-m5641-windows-xp-and.html
Everything is working except the audio.

When I try to install the audio driver it fails.
When I go into system and attempt to UPDATE the driver it does not respond.
Windows update did install a new driver, but still no audio

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

DaveIt's possible the driver listed at that SITE is INCORRECT for your machine...i'd go straight to the Acer site.Acer site does not offer drivers for XP only VistaThere's your problem...
It was built for Vista.

download Ch shell (i think its from softintegration)

Ch shell is a C and C++ interpreter.

We have already established:

1. He ASKED about "sh files".
2. "sh files" are Bourne Again Shell ("Bash") Scripts.
3. They are for LINUX.
4. He is running Windows XP.
5. Linux bluetooth drivers won't do anything useful on an XP system.
6. Acer didn't make XP drivers for his netbook.

i know the drivers wont work
but Ch DOES run .sh files
i use it to configure open source programs
such as ./configure
Unix shell commands such as grep and awk run inside Ch shell in the same manner as in BASH and csh.
and the ORIGINAL problem was drivers. running the shell script with ch won't install them.Quote from: smeezekitty on August 17, 2009, 12:58:34 AM

Solve : Help safe mode loops, disk errors and I'm alone!?

Answer»

I need help with a safe mode boot and I have the cd and its not loading. i posted a thread earlier and NONONE responded to it.

Pretty much i get an error whenever I tried openening in safe mode and I tried to make it go into safe mode by checking "/safemode" in boot .ini and it restarted and now I can't acess normal mode again.

I read up and found I could recover via windows XP Home Edition cd and I found my cd, I think I know how to LOAD it and I've tried an "F12, run from disk drive" approach and it started loading. The problem is it wont get to a thing where I can start windows It says that windows is starting and It comes up with another error!

I really want help because this is not my computer and the person needs it for work and I messed it up.
Help Please!

And I said before this is not a major problem but that is because I thought I could fix it, HELP!!!!

Quote

This isn't a major issue but I'd like to solve it fast. I could not enter safe mode and stupidly went into boot .ini and made is so the default login was safe mode. and is still cant go into safe mode, so no matter what i click to get onto to windows, it comes up with
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you computer.

I am on a different computer and I know that you can run a recovery PROGRAM from the Windows XP disc, but I seem to have... misplaced it. I've tried everything I can think of and looked through the setup menu and other options for starting but each one tries to boot into safe mode. If there is a way to boot back normally so I can change the boot .ini without the disk, I would love to know.

I'm confused... Can you still boot into safe mode?

If so use notepad to open boot.ini and remove the /SAFEMODE, save and reboot.

otherwise, you can try to edit the boot.ini from a Linux Live CD, such as Ubuntu.

Once Ubuntu boots, you can use it's text editor to open the boot.ini on the hard disk and remove the switch- then shut down, remove the disk and restart.I cannot access safe mode, that is what I was trying to fix and I went to boot .ini and clicked safe mode. I restarted and then the "normal startup" was safe mode and I still couldn't acess it, my computer would just come up with an error. I have put in the windows cd and still it will come up with an error when I try to run it, Im stuck in a loop because safe mode wont work.Without the error message we'd be just guessing...

What happened prior to this ?A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you computer.

What new hardware have you installed recently ? ?I had recently installed audacity, some malware things, and adobe reader, and had a virus Windows Antivirus Pro. I got rid of the virus and was having some problems so I got rid of the other 3 programs and uninstalled and was going to reboot into safe mode and then this started.Does it boot into normal mode ? ?
If so do that...then turn off any apps running in the tray.
Open a command prompt and type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...

Let it run to completion and re-boot.
DO NOT interrupt it even if it takes awhile.I cannot boot into any mode at all, because to get to normal mode I would have to change the boot .ini again and I can't do that unless I'm in windows. its funny you say that because this is how everything went

Got a Virus
Got rid of the virus
computer would randomly have an error and shut off with something to do about new hardware
Checked safemode and it suggested to run CHKDSK
Tried to run chkdsk and it said that it couldn't
looked up online how to run it and it said do it in safe mode
changed the boot .ini so it would only do safe mode and restarted
now the "normal" boot is safe mode and the "safe mode" boot is safe mode, and neither of them work
look up solutions and try to run the windows cd on the computer for the recovery and get the second error.

Now what I want to try, tell me if you have any thoughts on if this would work or not is to get my flash drive and download the windows files from the cd onto that. Then see if I can start the computer using the windows files from the flash drive and bypass the internal hard drive. Then go into the internal harddrive from windows and change the boot .ini.Boot to the windows CD...
Choose R at the first menu...this will load the Recovery Console.
After it loads at the command prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter...
Remove the CD and re-boot.
If this produces no joy-joy repeat the above excepr this time type in FIXMBR and hit enter.
Re-boot.

In future leave the bootini alone.I cannot get to the first menu, it gives me the second error right before it gets to it. I think there is a problem with my hard drive.

And yes the second i fix it i'm never gonna screw with the files again.

Is there any way to create a recover disc for the HP? Am I completely overlooking something?you dont need a recovery disk
i WOULD say just reinstall windows
most data should stay where it is
some other member of the forum can give better advice on installing windowsBoot to safe mode & go to system properties - advanced - startup & recovery settings then uncheck "automatically restart". NEXT time the blue screen will remain up - post the contents of that screen here. If you can't get to safe mode, Press F8 as your system boots and choose "disable restart on error".

Solve : Computer turned itself on?

Answer»

I woke up today and my computer tower was turned on. Everynight I turned my computer off fully and ive used the computer itself for 2-3 YEARS and ive changed no options that should make this suddenly start occuring. Ive searched other forms and most of them say this is related to BIOs and turning off the "wake on lan", but I dont think its likely this would suddenly begin effecting me when it never has in the past. On top of being on I found that my date/time was set incorrectly (sometime in octorber) and about 80% of the stuff in my start menu in the programs list are highlighted as if they were a recently installed file (Even the "New programs installed" bubble popped up). Im quite confused to how this HAPPENED seeing that ive installed nothing new over the past few weeks and I havnt been to any strange websites (Though I dont think a virus could do this EITHER), so im worried SOMETHING might be going out in the machine. According to my roommate the power went off for about 20 minutes while I was asleep, but I cant see a power outage making it turn on. Any ideas of what might have caused this and if I should be worried or not?Quote from: BBsa on August 17, 2009, 10:54:03 AM

Many BIOSes contain a "wake on AC power restore" or "AC power loss restart" option which does exactly that.

Another POSSIBLE setting to check in bios is "wake on lan"Quote from: ADG on August 17, 2009, 11:30:53 AM

2. Tweak UI v2.1. This utility is one of the Windows XP PowerToys. From within Tweak UI, expand the "General" category in the left hand pane. On the right hand side of the window, it's the last item listed in the "Settings" subsection. Clear the checkbox for "Show Windows VERSION on desktop".

Solve : Setting Up Headset Problems?

Answer»

I am asking this for my boyfriend. He has an EMachines computer which is from 2005/2006. He has just gotten a headset(Sweex) and has it connected to the computer. His operating system is Windows XP. How does he go about setting up the sound and playback so that I can hear him. We tried it with MSN Live Messenger and he could hear me just fine but I could not hear him. What does he have to do in order to hear me? Both he and I are beginners so we need very basic step by step layman's terms. Also, he did try the headset with watching a video in Youtube and was able to hear it. I just cannot hear him. I have an Intel Pentium with Windows XP version 2002. I really appreciate the help. What application are you TRYING to hear him in, is it a game, or something online?CLICK Start then choose Control Panel. Now choose Sounds and AUDIO Devices. This will bring up the sounds and audio devices properties window. Click on Advanced and you will be at the volume control window. At the far right of this window you will see Line in. Make sure that the mute box near the bottom is unchecked and the volume is turned up.Some computers have a microphone socket which is different from the line-in. Some headsets work better if you use this. The Windows volume control has a slider for "microphone".

I had this problem when I tried to Skype using a new headset.

First thing is to check he's plugged everything in fine. (Microphones usually plug into the pink socket in my limited experience) Assuming you have plugged everything in fine he will need to go to "Tools>Audio and Visual setup" in MSN. In there you can set up MSN to make sure it is using the right microphone input (mine for example defaults to the webcam microphone if I don't set it to my headset microphone). skype is very bad it sends information from yhour bios
and maybe even your harddisk
thats invasionQuote from: Sivany on August 16, 2009, 07:11:29 AM

The one thing I forgot to mention is that he is in the UK and I'm in the USA. He siad that a friend told him he would have to subscribe in order to be able to chat and that it is pretty expensive like a premium phone line. I have chatted with others over in the UK and they nor I have ever had to subscribe to or pay for anything. We have just called each others computers and been able to hear both ways just fine. My boyfriend can hear me just fine but his VOICE does not come over at all. There are times when I hear a little noise like the line is open but, then nothing from his end at all. We have run the gamut of checking the sounds and audio devices and his are the same as mine and all WORKING properly and he is able to hear music with his headphones in music and video websites just fine. It is just in MSN where he can't hear me. I cannot install Yahoo IM as I'm having a problem with my computer always saying there is not enough free disc space even though the pie is always showing ample disc space and I have even cleared a bunch of things out and defragmented and it still tells me that. I'm working on a computer given to me by a friend who had his business through it and he had left a ton of programmes and things I have no idea of what they are on here. I took off what I could that didn't interfere with anything but, still I have issues with downloads of software.

Basic details on your computer, manufacturer (Dell, HP, custom built), how much RAM, CPU (Intel/AMD), etc.

defwatch.exe is part of Norton AntiVirus from Symantec Corporation. It detects out-of-date virus definitions for Norton Anti-Virus software and warns you about them. Required only if you don't update your virus definitions manually on a regular basis.

also, i can run these off a boot cd?Chipset Drivers FIRST...then audio and video.
The rest you don't need.all the drivers need to be installed while in the OS, so i cannot make a bootable cd to install any drivers.

Solve : Accedently Deleted Adminastor Files please Help?

Answer»

Hi I have a Sony Vaio VGC-RB34G I also have Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0- I was on the Internet and came accross a site that GAVE me some Trojans PSW.WIN32.Agent.nhv and Win32.Rabbit.ki among others that My Internet security found but could not delete. So i had to go into Safe Mode an delete the files manually. I also had to get give myself rights to the folders as the Trojan had messed with them.. After deleteing all files found by Kaspersky 7.0 I restarted. Ran a full scan and Nothing, I felt safe. My Internet EXPLORER was running real SLOW and after a day the trojans were back. So I so I deactivated System Restore thinking that a restore point would safe the trojan Restarted computer. I only had One user profile set up so I wanted to delete the Adminastor thinking the Trojan took over rights so i WENT back in safe mode and Made another Adminastor with a Password also renamed my computer then Deleted the Old Admin . restarted and Forgeting to Save Files on My desktop and Documents It was ALL gone.. I do Have a Recovery Software but I would Like my Old Desktop Folders as they were organized for my work. Can ANYone HELP?? when you deleted the account, you deleted the files, as well.

you'll need to use your recovery software.I was afraid of that, but I read somewhere that in Regedit I can trick the registry back into the old adminastor if I typed it back in the registry in the user profiles But I had to remember the Name of what I had it before? Is this Not a Option? I CANT find that Site anymore.?err no... the files were deleted...Unless you have some trick recovery software, and have written nothing to the HDD then the files are gone.

Solve : Task bar Locks on top of windows??

Answer»

Hello. Thank you for taking an interest in my thread.

I have been trying to get my TASK bar to autohide while Im useing the computer, but it always ends up sitting on TOP of all the windows.
It doesnt matter how many times I RESET it to autohide, it eventually ends up on top?
Have I set something incorrectly?

AND

I loaded Lotus 123 onto the drive a while ago and it starts up when the computer starts.
Is there a way I can remove the icons from the right hand LOWER corner but still have the program loaded?

OR

Can I remove any of those icons in the taskbar lower right hand corner? The icons in the lower right represent the applications that are started when your computer boots up. Most applications when you install them put themselves in this list but are not needed at startup. A free app called "easy cleaner" will help you edit this startup list. Google Easy Cleaner, download it and give it a try. The taskbar thing I can't help you with. Sound like one of those goofy things windows sometimes doesRight click on Task Bar>properties>CHECK Hide inactive icons>Apply>Customize>click on each program you wish to hide.

When you select autohide try lock the taskbar.

Solve : Memory dump then Reboot. Rinse and Repeat!?

Answer»

So my girlfriends Sony Viao vgn-a160 LAPTOP shut itself off the other day. I turned it back on and as soon as windows boots it does a physical memory dump. Then it restarts and does the whole thing over. I have about 2 seconds in win xp to do something before it does it again. I read some other forums and thought it might be the registry so i downloaded registry easy. I had to remove the battery while it was on to be able to boot it in safe mode. Then i INSTALLED registry easy ran it and restarted. Same [emailprotected]#$ happens. I NEED some help here. I really don't want to lose all the info on the computer. Alot of it I could never get back. Any help would be more than appreciated!!! registrey easy sounds scamish
i think a driver may have gone south
or you have bad virusBoot to safe mode. Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and uncheck "automatically restart". Next time, instead of a reboot you should get a blue screen error. Post that error message here. However, if the system still reboots you almost certainly have a hardware problem. It says DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUALThat was the entire message? There was no file named?

Anyway, that error is generally caused by a faulty driver. Update your audio & video drivers (get them from the OEM web sites, not from MS Update). Also check for a bios flash.careful if a bios flash is done wrong
it can mess up you motherbaord big timeQuote from: smeezekitty on August 17, 2009, 04:40:40 PM

careful if a bios flash is done wrong
it can mess up you motherbaord big time
Nonsense. It's almost impossible to make a mistake with a bios flash these days as long as you don't turn off the system in the middle of the udate. Just follow the instructions that come with the update.dankvideodude- can you still run in safe mode? Also as ADG asked was there no file mentioned in the bluescreen? Generally a file is listed near the bottom of the screen, which can help isolate exactly which driver/component is causing the issue.

Yeah it still seems to run in safe mode. At the bottom it does say
w22n51.sys - Address F817E8D base at F814D000, Datestamp 404c5c4
Also I was looking on the sony SITE and found a couple of bios updates im going to try.
See if you can find a new driver for your wireless card.So I cant seem to use EITHER of the 2 bios updates. Its stops and says WBFLASH Cannot read the system information. Okay, just update the wireless card driver. So I updated the wireless driver and it seems to have worked. I googled the file and read some other forums about it. They said the same. Something with the intel wireless driver. Been 10 min and nothing yet. Crossing my fingers..w22n51.sys is the driver for your wireless card. Once you posted that info it made it easy to identify the problem. Good luck with your system.

File->Save As...

In the "save as type" box, select "All Files"

in the File name box, ENTER C:\windows\inf\oeaccess.inf

Click "save"

now try to open Add/Remove windows components, and see if it works.

No. Still same.did the file save properly? No I don't see it! I'll try again.I did everything you said but it still won't work. Where did it stop working?

Where did you run into TROUBLE?I have the folder(oeaccess.inf) in windows\inf but it's empty. I don't KNOW how to put the contents you listed in it.it's a folder? if it's a folder, delete it.

Solve : Windows XP loading problem?

Answer»

I had two OSES installed Windows XP and Windows XP x64 SP2. Both were installed on a same drive but on diffrent partitions, since I wasn't using my 32bit windows I decided to delete it and merge partitions. I have done this before, so I thought there shouldn't be any problems. Unfortunately I forgot that everything needed to boot both OSes (like boot.ini) was on the same partition with my 32bit windows, so after merging nothing would load (I can't remember the exact error message, it was late at night yesterday, but I believe it's not important here). Luckily I found old Debian CD, so I cut a new partition from my drive and install it. After playing a bit with grub, I manage to start booting windows.
However it says "NTLDR is missing."
I used on of this sites amazing guides to recover NTLDR and NTLDR.COM files from my windows install CD.
There comes another problem there is no boot.ini so I need to create one, I tried to use windows install CD to automatically generate it with "bootcfg /rebuild" but it failed, since I had ext3 partition. So I created it manually
(here it is)
Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
and after few tries I found the correct partition with my windows and it actually started to load. I get the black screen with windows logo in the middle and a line with blue running cubes, then I see the same screen that you see when you select users to login into windows and mouse pointer appears. However instead of userlist there is windows logo and loading hangs up on this point, I tried to wait (~5min) but nothing changed.
At this point I'm lost and need advice. It seems like you're pretty close. It seems like you have everything except User Accounts. You might have to perform a Repair Install.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

1. Try removing the /noexecute=optin from the boot.ini, it's only for 32-bit Windows.

Something like this http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx ?
Will Repair install cause any data losses?

By the way, there is one weird thing, I've cut my hdd many times, and after each time when I booted to windows, It did some kind of disk scan (can't remember how exactly it was called) to identify how large partition is now. However this time it never made it, maybe this is the cause and I need to run it manually somehow.Quote from: Antor Pritcher on July 29, 2009, 12:32:36 PM

That's one of the links, good find!
You will lose no data or any installed programs. You will have to perform Windows Update again as if it were a new install. Just be careful when it asks you what you want to do or you will get a 2nd Windows installation on the same boot drive partition. You want to overwrite the old Windows installation, not add a new one.

Don't know what you mean by "cut my hdd", unless you mean resize partition? Resizing partitions should have no effect, I used to run a triple boot on my previous COMPUTER. I still resize partitions from time to time on one of my computers, then Windows will see it as a new drive and ask to reboot.

If you can find out how to add a user PROFILE where none currently exist, you may not even have to do the repair install, but the repair should fix this for you and might be easier to perform.

Solve : Scanner requiring a SCSI (2 -Fast /8 bit) card / interface?

Answer»

I am thinking of buying an older used scanner (for 35mm slides) that requires a SCSI card / interface.. I have a 2 PC systems a 3 yr. OLD Dell DIMENSION E510 (XP OS) that I do not think has a SCSI card... and a ~ 8 yr. old Dell Dimension XPS T600 (Win. 98 os) - that I think may (but not sure) have come with a SCSI card/connector. I would appreciate any advice on whether I should be able to use this scanner with either of my systems - and if not - whether it would be difficult (or costly) to find a compatible card to MAKE this scanner work with either of these. Any advice is appreciated!See Here...

Solve : multiple clicks on paging?

Answer»

Hello out there

I have an issue, not a big DEAL, but one I'd like to solve.

Each time I enter or change a page in IE7 , my cursor will sit and blink and click for a short time, and I have to wait on it to continue. It seems like the number of clicks KEEPS getting more all the time.
I just dumped Norton for Avast, added a gig of new memory, deleted all registery cleaning programs, and cleaned up everything.

My speed increased a BUNCH but now I have all this clicking, which was there before, to an extent.

Any suggestions on eliminating this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks BucxDid you use the Norton Removal tool ? ?

Solve : Xp64 triple boot??

Answer»

Hello all.
My problem is that I want to dual boot xp and xp 64. I run xp and win 2000 in a dual boot situation at the moment but never use 2000 at all now. I want to utilise of all of my ram so I want to install xp64. I have read that there are problems running xp32 with xp 64 as regards startup/boot. I want to install xp64 onto a new drive by itself. Is this possible with my current setup and if so what problems, if any, should I be aware of?
I run a dual processor msi k8n master 2far motherboard with 2 opteron 285's with 6 gig of ram.

thanks in advanceI have XP32, XP 64, and Vista Ultimate x64 triple booting on my laptop with no issues.

It's easy, if you start with a clean drive. always go from oldest OS to newest OS; in my case, I installed XP-32 first, XP-64 second (which recognized XP-32 and installed a boot menu) and lastly Vista x64, which found the existing boot loader and replaced it with the vista bcd.

so now, when I start, I have a choice of "Windows Vista" or Earlier Version of Microsoft Windows", selecting the latter runs the same boot loader installed by XP64.

In your case, starting from a wiped drive you could install XP 32-bit onto one partition/HD, and then XP 64-bit onto ANOTHER afterwards. XP64 would setup a boot menu for you.

If on the other hand you just want XP 64-bit, then it's even easier, just install from a clean drive.

I cannot see any further issues, except perhaps driver issues. For the most part, it just takes the proper "google-fu" to find the drivers.

one last thing though- you might want to try to search for xp64 drivers beforehand, and then burn it to a CD; at the very least I'd get your network drivers and motherboard chipset drivers, to start.thanks for the response.
Hopefully mine will be as painless an install as yours.
And i'll definitely check for the 64bit drivers this weekend before I try the install.
If you don't hear from me, all went well. Fingers crossed

thanks

Hello again.
Well I didn't get to INSTALLING XP64 yet!

I had a serious error on my system last night and it took me till about 3am to get it up again ...but I don't really know what I did or what really caused the error.
The crash/freeze occured when I had booted into my XP system as normal and just after the desktop appeared I opened Nero media player and clicked on the button to open the music folder so I could choose something to listen too - and the system froze. I then switched off and rebooted after about 20 secs. It would get to just before the screen to logon with your password and it would flash up a blue screen too fast to see and it would either hang or restart.
It would boot into XP in safe mode but I'm not too sure what that proved and I could also get into Win2000 but not XP. I had the new hard drive powered on but not formatted and the new ram was in place too so it was running 6 gig instead of the usual 4. I disconnected the new hard drive and removed the newly purchased ram. This did not initially fix the problem.
I then thought to disable onboard audio SINCE it was an audio program that caused the problem ( or so it seemed to me ) and I got it too boot but only after several tries.

The following is the error from the first night after I got it too boot:-

This is the following evening....
I re-installed the new ram and it booted up fine first time. Then I restarted and went into the bios and enabled onboard audio and after the reboot I got a blue screen again with the error message, " IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ". Can somebody explain what this error MEANS please.

I then removed the new ram from slots 5 and 6 again and disabled the audio.

I got a different error window when I finally got it to boot into XP after this.
It read:-
error signature
BCCode : 9c BCP1 : 00000004 BCP2 : 8054D5F0 BCP3 :

F6062001
BCP4 : BA080813 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product :

The error window also states that these files :-
D:\DOCUME~1\David\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER8f6f.dir00\Mini073009-01.

dmp
D:\DOCUME~1\David\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER8f6f.dir00\sysdata.xml

- will be included in the error message but annoyingly I cannot find them on my system.

I have not had any blue screens since I built this machine 2 years ago and everything has worked without a hitch.

Can somebody with superior knowledge please tell me what is going on!!

thanks.

Solve : Temporamental Desktop - Moments from being thrown out of a second storey window!?

Answer»

MY first post on this forum, so HI all!

RIGHT. Im currently having an annoying issue with my XP desktop. It quite commonly refuses to start up when I turn it on. IT behaves like this: Press the power switch, and the light comes on and the fans whir up - but then it doesnt make the usual dual beep noise it usually does just before loading with the Dos like SCREEN before loading XP. It just sits in that docile state, with the monitor not receiving a signal at all. The only solution is to pull the plug and try again.
The funny thing is though that it only happens some of the time, perhaps about 1/2 of the time - the rest of the time it starts completely normally.

The specs I can remember are below, but can post more if required:

Medion Desktop PC
XP Proffesional
1.8Ghz Dual Core Intel
2GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 8400 GPU

Any ideas you may have that could help solve this issue would be fantastic!!
Thanks!
Welcome to CH.

How old is the mother board?
Hi,

Not very - perhaps 2 years?? Given a little more time I could find out the exact spec of the motherboard, could post that up later today if it would help.
What part of the motherboard do you think could cause such a problem?BORROW a known good PSU of the same or GREATER wattage and swap it in there to see if that's the culprit...Start with the basics, check all connections out side and in side the computer. It could be something as simple as a loose plug.

My PC have an Error !!!
Here's Dr.Watson file :

Application exception occurred:
App: C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE (pid=1164)
When: 17/8/2552 @ 10:36:22.515
Exception number: 80000007

The "date" (year = 2552) above looks funny. Is your system clock set correctly?

While I can't necessarily help you, it would be helpful to know whether this is a "recurring" error or a one time event.Thank you so much
*Note : 2552 [Buddhist Era] = 2009 [A.C.]What is the actual problem with the computer?Quote
*Note : 2552 [Buddhist Era] = 2009 [A.C.]

Computer programs won't take this into account. Values could be overflowing- if this is a recurring problem try temporarily changing it and see if the issue goes away.

Solve : What kind of Files are these? Legitimate or Junk?!?

Answer»

Hi Friends!

I accidentally got a 'Sneak Peek' into the 'C:/Documents & Settings' folder of the my Windows account & it displayed 3 Weird looking files with 2 of these carrying .DAT as File extension.

Please have a look at the sequential screenshots & help me decipher the AUTHENTICITY of these files. The two with .DAT file extension displays a 'Warning' message on double click & the 3rd one is a O Kb file that do not displays an error message but displays a list of probable programs that can be used to open that.

Check out...!

[attachment deleted by admin]BEST to leave the Ntuser.dat files alone, they are an integral part of the system and can be found in each user account.

I have not found any INFORMATION about the odd named zero byte file. Is it protected by the system?

The Y9Y9 file is part of HP software/drivers:

Quote

You are running an HP system; the file is a temp data holder used by some of the proprietary software HP runs on the system to help the user 'experience a better more enjoyable computing environment'.
I don know whether the 'Strange looking' 0Kb file is system protected or else, but its neither Hidden nor Read only!

I do have a HP 3-in-1 device(PRINTER,Scanner,Copier) & around half-a-dozen of Virtual printers that aid the conversion of any file format to .pdf

Screenshot is rather irrelevant...in this context!

[attachment deleted by admin]Found some info - I'm with WyattSoft - it seems the file is created by HP drivers and can be deleted if you uninstall the HP software but then you won't be able to run your 3-in-1 so I suggest you just forget it.

A bit of info here

Solve : want to format c, not an option on boot disc?

Answer»

I have two drives, C and D. I want to format so I can reinstall windows, which is on the C drive. When I boot from the installation cd the only option that even appears is the partition on the D drive. So I formatted D but everything is still on the C drive, and windows boots up as normal. My BIOS shows both drives, but I can't see the C drive when booting from the installation disc, it only shows the now unpartitioned D,...what do I need to do?How I did it.
Do you want Windows on C or D. Which ever drive you want windows installed on should be set to boot first in the BIOS. Also CD ROM should be set to boot before the hard drives, then select 'Enter" when the start-up screen gives the option "Press any Key to boot from CD".
The option to format should come up during installation if the drive is not formatted.
After Windows is installed, you should be able to see both drives in "My Computer" and "Disc Management".
I have CD Rom set to boot before the hard drives. I want windows on C as it has been, but I want to completely format it and reinstall. When I boot from the CD it gives me the option to delete a partition, but only the D drive. So I formatted the D drive, but did not install windows on it. Then it warns me that there is no windows installation on my computer and if I restart I'll have to boot it from the cd and install windows. Of course there is a windows on my computer, on my C drive, and I can start windows as normal without the disc. But with the disc in I can't find a way to format C, it's like the boot disc doesn't even know its there. Did you set C to boot before D in the BIOS then run the installation CD at start-up?YEAH I've got from first to last set to:

onboard or usb cd-rom drive
onboard SATA hard drive (C)
onboard IDE hard drive (D)

it boots from the installation CD, before going into windows. I also tried disabling the D drive in the BIOS, but it's still the only thing recognized when I'm running the installation CD.I guess the IDE controller starts before the SATA. Try unplugging D from the IDE CABLE then reboot in safe mode to install.

EDIT = spellingWell I'm going to have to ask someone else to do that for me, I'm not knowledgeable enough about opening it up. Thanks for your help though! Hopefully I can get it fixed soon.Sorry I couldn't help. One of the Guru's will likely help you out though. Good luck! Quote from: kujen on July 28, 2009, 12:15:59 AM

I have two drives, C and D.
Are C and D both hard drives? If so, what letter is your CD ROM? I ask because D is usually the letter given to the primary optical drive (CD ROM). It sounds to me, as mentioned, that your Drive C is a SATA drive, and your drive D is a IDE drive.

if your trying to reinstall XP, it will NOT see your SATA drives at all; just IDE drives (it was created before SATA).

However, all is not lost. if you notice, during setup XP states at some point "press f6 to load third party or RAID drivers..."

At this point you'll need to have the SATA drivers for your motherboard ready (available from your manufacturer's site). XP should then load the drivers, and POOF! you'll see your C: drive.

Another option you can explore is setting your SATA controller to "compatibility" mode. This will (rumour has it) slightly reduce the speed of your disk accesses, but XP will detect the drive as it would an IDE drive.Quote from: lectrocrew on July 28, 2009, 06:51:29 AM

Yeah..originally I had a C drive and a CD drive. Then I had my brother add on a DVD writer and an extra hard drive. I don't think the original CD drive is even enabled anymore, just the DVD writer. I guess that's the way he wired them up, maybe its contributing to this problem.

The C drive was the original hard drive that came in my Dell computer. The D drive was a later addition. So I still don't understand why it won't recognize the original drive windows was installed on. I'd like to try your suggestions though...a few questions first. Where do I download the drivers to? And how do I set the SATA controller to compatibility mode? Can I change it back later after I've formatted and reinstalled windows?Quote

it cannot recognize the drive if it is SATA, because XP was created before SATA; it doesn't know it exists. It worked before because the drivers were installed.

if you set it to compatibility install windows, and the appropriate SATA drivers (usually part of your chipset drivers), you *might* be able to change the setting back, but I don't know.Quote from: kujen on July 28, 2009, 02:24:21 AM

Disabling drives in BIOS doesn't seem to WORK for me, either.

I guess the IDE controller starts before the SATA. Try unplugging D from the IDE cable then reboot in safe mode to install.

EDIT = spelling
My P4 BIOS sets IDE controllers 1st, SATA are 2nd.

However, there is also a setting in the BIOS called:
Integrated Peripherals---SATA Devices Configuration---On-Chip Serial ATA---Enhanced
PATA and SATA will both be enabled. 6 IDE drives are supported (although 2 are SATA)

Integrated Peripherals---SATA Devices Configuration---PATA IDE Mode---(primary or secondary)

it cannot recognize the drive if it is SATA, because XP was created before SATA; it doesn't know it exists. It worked before because the drivers were installed.

if you set it to compatibility install windows, and the appropriate SATA drivers (usually part of your chipset drivers), you *might* be able to change the setting back, but I don't know.

Yes it is. But the windows CD is an OS and it does boot and if it doesn't have the drivers to see the SATA drive, it won't.

This is why there is a compatibility option for the SATA ports in the first place; so that older OS's will find them as IDE drives.

Additionally, without SATA drivers, the OS will not function.(unless SATA has been set to compatibility mode) VISTA has this support built in; and if I disable compatibility mode on my laptop, it works fine. however, neither of my XP installs will boot if I do that (BSOD: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME) since they do not have the Toshiba SATA chipset drivers installed.Would a service pack 3 installation CD have the drivers? I've been using the service pack 1 CD that came with the computer. Otherwise I'm not sure how I can load the drivers because I don't have a floppy drive. I'm still thinking of enabling/disabling the compatibility mode, but I've read elsewhere that disabling it after installation causes a blue screen.

Edit: Ok problem solved. I created a new boot cd with the SATA drivers installed on it. Thanks everyone for your help!

Solve : System Restore won`t work?

Answer»

Hi Everyone

Can you help me ? Each time I try to use my system restore and set to a previous time (with bold date shown) the machine goes through the sequence but then sayes it did not make any changes. Could it be that the system resore is switched off if so can someone tell me how to switch it on.

Many ThanksUnfortunately System Restore has always been buggy at best. I've always been a strong proponent of disk imaging software. I use Acronis True Image, but there are a number of good free alternatives.Enable System Restore

I tend to agree with Allan on this one however...i also use Acronis.

But Here you will find my recent Review on Macrium Reflect if you need a FREE solution for backups...

Good Luck.
A good freeware alternative for Windows System Restore is a registry backup program called ERUNT [Emergency Recovery Utility NT]. http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
It’s quick and easy to run before you install an app or a Windows update or whenever, in case anything goes wrong. Google it and read a couple reviews.

It saves backups in a folder in C:\WINDOWS\. Navigate there and run ERDNT.EXE to restore.
I’ve used it a few TIMES to correct some minor glitches and it SEEMS to do the trick. Has anyone else used it?

ERUNT is a great app and many of us here have not only used it but recommended it as well...
However to say it's an alternative to System Restore is a bit misleading as all ERUNT backs up is the registry...not important Windows system files...

Nonetheless a good reccomendation.Quote from: TonyT on August 16, 2009, 05:06:03 AM

Do you have Norton Antivirus? If so look here:

I uninsulated it and things are now fine, If you also have Zone Alarm it might be worth trying?1. Safe Mode. Perform the system RESTORATION from "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with COMMAND Prompt". Safe Mode loads a minimal set of software (and drivers), so there's LESS chance of interference from third party software (particularly security software).

To invoke system restore from a command prompt, enter the following string (without the quotes): "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe"

Warning: When restoring a system from Safe Mode an Undo restore point will NOT be created!

So... Before booting to "Safe Mode", create a restore point of the machine's current state (in case you want to return to that state).

Solve : Function Key Not Working?

Answer» HI,

I am using a Dell Inspiron E1405.

The function key has stopped working for me (sort of). I can hit FUNCTION and F2 for instance and the wireless web will turn off. But I will not see the icon for it. I try to VIEW the battery life by hitting FUNCTION and then F3 but it doesn't DISPLAY. Is there a way I can get my computer to display for me when I hit the function button? Thanks.

Your Fn key MIGHT be disabled via your BIOS settings. Try looking there.Could you explain this in more detail?
