Solve : DAX error access voilation at address....?

Answer»

awhile back i started getting a DAX error only when my browsers were closed and computer had been sitting idle for a while. the error read:
DAX error- access violation at address 133ECBC7 in module 'IOLOSM~1.DLL'. read of address 00000008. it happened every time the computer sat idle for a while. but now it says: DAX error - access violation at address 133ED00B in module "IOLOSM~1.DLL'. read of address 00000008. it only happens like i said, when the browsers are closed and computer is sitting "idle". i have "system mechanic" which comes from iolo.com. i have tried several posts but can't get any certain info as to what it is, why it happens, or how to fix it. is it serious? any info would be greatly appreciated thanks'I suspect System Mechanic to be the culprit....Boot to Safe Mode and "uninstall" the System Mechanic software. Reboot to "Normal" mode and you should no longer have the "problem".

Why do you need "System Mechanic"?

See "Sabo" post, at the end of the following thread DAX Error Access Violation. Sabo suggests you can resolve the error, but need better understanding of your startup environment, objectives, and how System Mechanic was installed and setup to run. I don't know, but might be FUN to try.

Let us know how much effort you want to PUT into this...
--dahlarbearMaybe there's more information in Microsoft Event Viewer logs.

Click "Start", "Run", type "eventvwr.msc" without quotes and press Enter.

Look for errors in Application or System with date/time stamps that coincide with the problem you are having. They will be under Type and be red with a white cross (X) in them. Then check out the Event ID:my thanks to PATIO, dahlarbear, and sabo for the posts. i will try uninstalling "system mechanic" as soon as i can figure out how to get into "safe mode" i am more of a click junkie than a tech monkey so off igo to learn:) thanks!Power up the machine...
Repeatedly tap F8 before you see the Windows splash screen...
Select safe mode with networking.
A long display list on a DOS style screen will SCROLL by...be patient.
When it finishes your icons and screen appearence will be different...don't panic this is normal and will revert back next time you boot to normal mode.

Good Luck.

Solve : Ntldr Problem.?

Answer»

Ok i had that error, and instead of coming onto a forum like this i tried to fix it myself. My friend threw away the startup disk when i first got my 3100 dell dimension. It was Windows Xp Windows Media Center Edition 2005. Now i tried to BORROW my uncles Windows Me Disk and i was TOLD you cant downgrade. So now my real problem is im stuck on the Me setup and it freezes at the same spot. So heres a step process of what happens.

-I boot the computer

-Windows Me Logo comes up (used to say XP)

-The setup initializes and goes through.

-The setup says adding hardware.

-My Mouse and Keyboard wont work at just this moment so i guess its not frozen.

-And i restart and it says the same thing, i can get into bios and all but not SURE what to do.

Please help me, thanks.

-Nickso do you want me on that computer or do you want xp back?i want xp back. =DQuote from: NickNero on September 06, 2009, 11:49:44 AM

i want xp back. =D

good Hopefully you have a backup of your PC....
Unfortunately since you ALREADY attempted installing ME on that machine your XP install is probably hosed...
Do you have an XP CD ? ?oh ok. where can i purchase one. i am on a mac right now. The broke computer is a dell dimension 3100. i checked staples and wally world. but they dont have a startup disk.Call Dell...give them the machines service tag # and see if they'll ship you a new one.ok but with that can the service with them expire? All you can do is ask...
Whether they decide yes or no i can't predict.

Solve : 2 installs of xp?

Answer»

my friend has managed to INSTALL xp on his system twice how can i uninstall 1Has he partitioned the disk into two disk "drives" and installed a copy on each?

--OR--

For NTFS drives:

1) Start your COMPUTER to Safe Mode with Command Prompt

2) Type “cd\” press “Enter”.

3) Now type cd\windows\system32 , press “Enter”

4) Type “osuninst.exe”, press ENTER.

5) Now follow onscreen prompts to uninstall XP

For FAT32 drives:

1) Start your computer with a boot disk, and load to command prompt.

2) Type “C:” press “Enter”.

3) Now type “cd windows” press “enter”,

4) then “cd system32” and press “Enter” .

5) You should now be at C:\windows\system32. If so continue

6) Type “osuninst.exe”, press ENTER.

7) Now follow onscreen prompts to uninstall XPMuch too complicated. Just boot to the XP INSTALLATION you want to KEEP, open Windows EXPLORER, and delete the other Windows (don't worry, you cannot delete the installation to which you booted). Then edit the boot.ini file to reflect the change.

Solve : Problem with installing windows XP SP3?

Answer»

Hi,

I am trying to install a bootable windows xp sp3 CD , but i get this message when i start my pc :

"NTLDR is missing , PRESS ctrl+alt+del to restart " , and the CD doesnt get to work .... can anyone help me solve this problem plz ?You are not booting to the cd. Change the boot order in the bios so the cd is at the top.no , the cdrom is the 1st boot deviceYou cannot get that message if you are booting to an XP CD.Quote from: ADG on September 05, 2009, 11:11:34 AM

You cannot get that message if you are booting to an XP CD.

Are you sure ? coz that's the case now ...YES, I'm sure. The system doesn't need a bootloader if you are booting to a cd.so wht COULD be the problem ? the CD itself ?Either the cd is not a bootable XP cd or the bios is not set to boot to the cd.how do i set the bios to boot from cd ?

wht i did is press del on startup then from advanced bios features choose cdrom as 1st boot device is that right ?That's CORRECT. Did you save the change on exit? And you might want to try booting to the cd on another computer.hello I downloaded xp onto my computer i had a message like that i'm not sure exactly what it said i used a different cd rom and it workedQuote from: superdupermido on September 05, 2009, 11:58:01 AM
so wht could be the problem ? the CD itself ?
No.

No.

Solve : Dual-boot, splitting & renaming the partition?

Answer»

Hi all,

I messed up my computer today. After a few seconds when the desktop is finished with loading, a blue screen pops up and I have to reboot my computer. Now the problem is I have lots of essential files I do not want to REMOVE with a new WINDOWS XP Installation. What software could do this? (If it's possible):

  • Split the partition
  • Rename the old one to D:\
  • The new one to C:\ (on which I will install Windows XP)

Thanks a lot mateys! (arrr) What you want to do is POSSIBLY achievable and you should look at the available free partitioning tools such as Easeus Partition Manager.

But, as with all partitioning, when there are critical files involved you must backup your files and ensure your backup is viable before proceeding. Don't take a chance on not losing your files.

Please read this.

Depending on your blue screen error it might be possible to correct the situation by doing a non-destructive repair install without overwriting files but even in those circumstances backup is essential.

Good luck. You could try a couple of options, a XP repair install or download Ubuntu / Mint and transfer your files to external media.

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/1. Save Data. Pull the hard drive and slave it to a working system to recover the data.

2. Blue Screen. If it's a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), Microsoft is trying to tell you what the issue is. Post the "exact" STOP code and hex number string along with any error message string and/or "RESPONSIBLE" module or filename.

3. Safe Mode. Can you successfully boot into Safe Mode?

what do you mean? TaskswitchXP?

I don't see why a youtube video is necessary- it works by replacing Alt+Tab- if you want to see what it looks like, install it- don't like it? Uninstall it, and it's back to the original.

Personally I never use the "flip3d" feature of vista to switch- I still stick with Alt+Tab, and SINCE they finally changed that in vista I get functionality about the same as taskSwitchXP (also, I'm not sure if taskswitchXP would install on Vista anyway).

The neatest part of it is that it uses uxtheme, so whatever theme you have installed it will look like, and not just the window title/borders, but the entire window and elements. (I had Royale Noir installed and the program matched perfectly).

I'm not sure what you mean by "bottom toolbar", if you mean the taskbar/start button it doesn't change that, so I don't see the relevance of including it in a screenshot if only to confuse people.

Additionally- wether or not a program has a video on youtube doesn't reflect wether that program is good or not but more or less reflects how complicated it is. If it needs a video does that not imply that it isn't intuitive to begin with?i really can't dowload this i'm really carefull about what i download there's nothing i can get from any realiable sources telling me the program is safe when i type in the program i can't hardly find nothing out about it can't even find any reliable sources telling me that the sight is safe i'm not talking about taskswitch shock earoahh, I see, in order for you to deem something "safe" you must have screenshots of the program that include the taskbar and also you must find videos on youtube created by god knows who god knows where demonstrating the features of an otherwise intuitive program.

if you cannot download programs just say so, but to use youtube and google image search to judge wether a program or web-site is safe is an exercise in both futility and naivety.

http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/www.ntwind.com

type in shock earo and look at like the FIRST ten sights that pops up they just looks like virus sights to me there very small
that doesn't mean the program is bad but i can't find nothing much about it telling me it's safe

type in shock earo

I thought you were talking about taskSwitchXP...

I've never used, or even heard of "Shock Aero" myself. And in fact the technical limitations preventing it from being feasible at all (namely the fact that the XP desktop doesn't use DirectX, like Vista does) bring into question it's LEGITIMACY as well.
ive tried it for a while before, it works nice. just....not good with low ram.
do any of you know of any other programs like shcok earo i might be able to find more about

System Restore?
Thanks for response.
Sorry, forgot to mention 'System Restore' is the first I tried.
Did not cure the problem of opening Thunderbird. 1. Uninstall Thunderbird.
2. Delete the Thunderbird program directory.
3. Reboot.
4. Disable Firewall.
5. Disable Anti-virus.
6. INSTALL Thunderbird.
7. Re-enable Anti-virus.
8. Re-enable Firewall.
9. Launch Thunderbird.
10. Report back the results.Hi Broni,
Did everything listed above.
Launching Thunderbird results in only it flashing then disappearing to give that same box--'Mozilla Quality Feedback Agent'.

The Thunderbird 'Safe Mode' given in 'Programs' only flashes also, and will not open.
Even downloaded another full Thunderbird version--2.0.0.22--from Mozilla.
Does same, no launching.

Does ntdll.dll in System32 corrupt?
Please see event log above.
I have another extracted from my WinXP-Pro CD.
Of course, it will not let me replace the one in System32.
SteveQuote

Of course, it will not let me replace the one in System32
Restart computer in Safe Mode. Rename existing file to ntdll.old, and paste new one.Broni,
Thanks.

The new extracted ntdll.dll was placed in my System32 as per your instructions.
Thumderbird still does not launch.
I discovered that 'Guest User' and creating another new 'User'--that it does launch.

So is there something in my User appl.data under 'Thunderbird', or in the registry regarding a 'Thunderbird key" that prohibits launching? Even restored the system back to last month, and there was no correction of the problem.

I also tried eliminating that 'Talkback' which does launch everytime I try launching Thunderbird. No Luck there.

SteveLet's redo.
I forgot, TB creates another folder, so...
Uninstall TB.
Remove TB folder in Program Files, and TB folder in C:\Documents & Settings\<your name> \ Application Data
Restart computer, and try to install fresh copy.

Solve : Windows will not startup?

Answer»

My "good" computer is having problems starting up. A few days ago I had to erase the hard drive and reinstall windows due to a SERIOUS malware infection that couldn't seem to be erased any other way. I ended up being able to use my computer for games and other things afterwards, meaning everything seemed to be running smoothly.

Today I started it up. It went to the screen that was all black and said something like "Windows stopped working unexpectedly last time" and asked me to choose safe MODE, and the other two types of safes modes and "last good config" as well as "start windows normally". If I choose any of the sade mode options, it runs through a bunch of text (Hopefully you know what i mean, i can't recall the long strings of text) and then just hangs there... doesn't startup. If I choose "last good config" it also hangs on that very black screen, doing nothing, even the number at the bottom that counts down until windows starts up stops (screen appears to be frozen). Start windows normally does the same thing. This happened a few times, eventually I got it to main screen and was doing normal things (Internet) when the screen flashed blue screen of death and then restarted. Then this happened again and it's not working.

This doesn't make sense, it was working just yesterday PERFECTLY with no bad happenings. I remember in the past it would flash the BSOD and I would freak, but it would restart normally (It didn't happen often).

All my drivers are up to date, as I have checked that yesterday and made sure everything was fine.

Also note, something in the tower is making a strange buzzing noise when it is running.

I would really appreciate any information as to what is going on with this computer.

PC info that I can remember (I am not computer savvy, and because I can't start it up to check). 1GB RAM, Geforce 6600 GT GFx card, good processor (can't remember the NAME, it's not old though) and power source working fine (Had checked PC Wizard just yesterday, no abnormalities). This just in. Computer is still being funky. I'm on it right now.

I was just sitting here messing with my screen, I hit "Recall" option on it, whatever that does... then restarted the computer seeing as maybe I would give it one last shot.

I started in "Last good config" it startup up and at desktop gave me the following two windows both titled "RUNDLL"

C:\Windows\System32\NvMcTray.dll

and C:\Windows\System32\NvCpl.dllBoth Nvidia related. Don't know what "Recall" option is and have no idea exactly what message(s) you are getting.Bothe of those are related to the nVidia Control Panel APPLET...
Try booting into safemode by tapping F8 repeatedly upon powering up and before you see the splash screen...
Then re-install the nVidia drivers from the original CD that came with the card...newer Drivers are not always better Drivers...and this may be the cause of the issue.

Solve : ADVENT T9201 ------ XP - Can i get it as 'out of the box ' condition again??

Answer»

My Advent is about 5 years OLD and i want to wipe the whole thing clean. I have done this with Vista and it was a piece of cake as it rebooted from a stored space on the hard drive so no disks were needed. I have tapped F8 on START up on the Advent- XP and it doesn't seem to be the same? is their any help or tips out their please?!.......................Well, you need to have the XP CD, then choose to boot from the CD. I'm not familiar with Advent T9201.

Normally you would SEARCH manufacturer's website for users guide or RECOVERY instructions for that model. It should tell you whether it comes with recovery partition on hard drive, recovery CDs, or both (and instructions on how to access). Look for a DOWNLOADS or Support link on the website.

A quick google came up with this. See if the Recovery Disc subsection of this link Advent T9201 PC looks reasonable.thanks for the google link,

very helpfull and i do need the recovery disc's. i will have to purchase them as i cant find the original !

thanks

Mahesh GoliYou seem to have given three input file names Files.lst, File.lst and Filename.lst so uncertain that this is what you want:

Code: [Select]@echo off
cls

setlocal

set path=c:\informatica\srcfiles\

for /f "delims=" %%# in (files.lst) do (
if not exist %path%\%%# (echo ----- %%# does NOT exist in %path% -----
) ELSE (
echo +++++ %%# DOES exist in %path% +++++
)

Solve : Computer loops into a reboot during XP startup?

Answer»

If your data is important, by all means, back it up first.Ok,

data safe. Used robocopy to make a COPY of the system partition. On a whim decided to try and boot off that. No luck! same problem.

Booted into the recovery console. Typed "fixmbr." Exited. The system rebooted into the same problem.

So I'm no different than before.

I've seen some places that talk about a repair install. But they all require a restore point. I don't have a restore point. I TURNED that off years ago because it clogged up my system so bad I was fighting it on a regular basis.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your HELP so far.You do not need a functional restore point to do a repair install...
Here Ya Go...

I suggest reading thru it to get familiar and printing out a reference copy before starting...
Done properly all your apps and data will be intact...
Done improperly all your stuff will be gone but you will have a fresh install of XP.OK!

System now boots and SO FAR everything looks to be here!!

YEAH!

I am running a virus scan now before I connect ONLINE. During the repair install a few files were asked for. I hit cancel and let the system continue.

I want to upgrade to SP3 since my install was SP2. Will that happen automatically?

Thanks so much. When I am able to get online and read all my E-mail I will know I am back to normal! Will what happen automatically - upgrading to sp3? No, you have to do that yourself.I am unable to get online. Did the repair remove my network? I can see some my accounts but I cannot get online.

pinging the router gives nothing (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). running ipconfig only displays "Windows IP Configuration" and nothing else.

The computer I am on is connected to the same LAN so I know it works.

What do I do to restore my internet connection?

Thanks.Networking is back on. Loaded the Mainboard drivers and everything came back.

Thanks for all your help!

This ticket is CLOSED!!

Solve : Opening programs?

Answer»

I get a message on different programs when I try to open. "Internet Explorer has encounted a problem
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have
created an error report that you can send to help us improve Internet Explorer".
And another message that says Symantec Services framework. Microsoft has encountered a problem and
needs to close. Etc, etc,.
It happens when I try to open my college practice PAGE.

Help
GeorgieDoes it happen ONLY when you go to that 'College practice' page? if so, something about that page won't work in that BROWSER and is crashing that. Try using a different browser. No, I get the message at other times on trying to open other sites.Well, install firefox anyway and give it a try. IE is complete crap anyway.Do you think I need to install active x? If so how do I do it?active x is only available in Internet explorer. It's a (stupid) PROGRAM system that lets a website run a program in the browser that has full access to your hardware. only IE uses it.1) Does Internet Explorer actually open?
2) Did this just start happening or was it always this way?
3) Active X controls are site specific. There's nothing for you to install unless the site asks you to.Yes, all works well. JUst some sites won't open and I get the message. Is there anything common about the sites that generate the error (for example, are they all java enabled)? Just as a test you might try uninstalling Norton AV and installing a different one (Avira, Avast, AVG are free) to see if there is some conflict with NAV (based on that error message you reported). DO NOT RUN WITHOUT AN AV INSTALLED.Yes, it always comes upQuote from: gdawson on September 03, 2009, 01:22:11 PM

Yes, it always comes up
Huh?Internet Explorer always opens. As I stated, everything works perfectly, but sometimes, randomly, I get the message.Okay, this is like a time warp. You're answering two questions back but not the most recent ones. Let's try to STAY together on this, SHALL we? It's tough enough troubleshooting problems on a forum - your attention and cooperation are really important to the process.

Solve : Solved!!! HP freezes on startup but not on restart?

Answer»

Its an HP a1010n, running XP Home Edition.

The PC starts up fine but when it is shutdown through the start menu it will freeze on the HP screen when the computer is restarted. But when the power is removed from the back of the tower and plugged back in, it will start with no problem. The pc will not freeze if it is already on and restarted by selecting the restart icon on the start menu, but if you select shutdown and then try to power the machine on manually thats when the problem occurs.

It might sound a little confusing but it only freezes when I try to turn the pc back on after performing a shutdown.

I updated all the drivers using driver detective, any help would be appreciated. As I'm sure you know, hard shutdowns are not good for the system (you should run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console frequently if you continue to do that).

Let's make a few registry changes (if you are comfortable in the registry) and see if it helps. Also, I'd be curious to know what happens if you try to shut down from within safe mode.

Here are the changes:

1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - REGEDIT
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the NEXT two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000I changed the registry to what you stated and nothing, when I shutdown and restart it freezes on the HP screen. It still boots up fine when I select restart instead of shutdown. The problem is only when shutdown is selected.

Same thing happens on safemode.i am fairly certain its a hardware issue
reseat the ram
download memtest and burn it to a cd and let it run 4 passes
inspect the motherboard for bad caps
1. HP Logo. Is this the logo that's displayed instead of the POST diagnostic screen? Disable it so we can see the POST diagnostics during boot. See Logo Startup Screen is Missing for instructions.

Are there other settings in that area of the BIOS related to POST diagnostic tests/display? If so what are they? Probably want to ENABLE all available POST diagnostics while troubleshooting this issue.

2. USB Devices. What USB devices, if any, are connected during system boot? Disconnect the ones you don't need and see if that makes a difference. In other words use a PS/2 keyboard if you can and disconnect all external USB connections (including the mouse - don't need to boot).

3. Ntdetect.com. Any chance you have a bootable floppy drive (or possibly USB flash drive)? It's possible to create a boot floppy replacing NTDetect.com with NTDetect.chk to display debug output as it attempts to enumerate hardware devices during startup.

Actually, if you're feeling "lucky" you can replace ntdetect.com on hard drive with ntdetect.chk for troubleshooting purposes. Rename ntdetect.com to ntdetect.bak; ntdetect.chk to ntdetect.com.
How Windows Starts Up (Part the second)
Use Ntdetect.chk to Identify Hardware Problems in Windows 2000

NTLDR
Ntdetect.comIf this happens from safemode I have to agree it does not sound like a software issue. It was the memory stick all along, I had run the memtest before but only let it finish through 2 passes, so nothing came up. Luckily I had a spare stick around, popped it in and shut down and powered up smoothly.

Thanks everyone for your help!!!

Solve : explorer.exe not loading?

Answer»

I have a computer that only loads to wallpaper and MOUSE pointer. The desktop icons and task bar are not visible. I can hit control, alt, del and look at the processes and applications running and explorer.exe is not listed. I can see the contents of the hard drive by telling it I want to open a new application. I think the computer has infections, but I can't get any of the anti-virus or spyware removal programs to load because of explorer.exe not running. I have tried to start it manually, and I get the following error: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I have tried in normal mode and in safe mode, both with the same results. Safe mode boots the same as normal mode. In both boot methods, I am logging in as admin. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Chris (buddyclm)sounds like explorer.exe is actually missing
do you have your windows xp cd?
It is a HP that has a restore partition. Explorer.exe file is in the windows folder.try CTL+ALT+DEL
and FILE->new task
type C:\windows\explorer
press enter
it should come backsmeezekitty, please refer back to the original post. When I try that I get the following message: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." If you think your system is infected you need to boot to a bootable AV cd and run a scan at boot (you can DOWNLOAD and create one if you don't own one). Worst case, you can boot to your XP Cd and either:

1) Do a repair install if you don't think it's a virus (but if it is you'll have the same issue) or
2) Format and reinstall. The format will eliminate the malware.Infected.1. Safe Mode with command prompt. Can you boot to this mode from the Windows Advanced Options menu which may be accessed by tapping F8 function key once or twice per second immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black PRIOR to displaying Windows XP logo with progress bar during system startup?

2. Bootable AntiVirus CD. Avira AntiVir Rescue System, may be found here.

There are TWO links: the "exe" icon will automatically burn the CD and the "iso" CD icon requires you to manually initiate the burn to CD.

I assume it's "free" for home personal use. There are other tools out there, but I don't have their links handy.

From the link:

Avira AntiVir Rescue System

The Avira AntiVir Rescue System a linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore. Thus it is possible to repair a damaged system, to rescue data or to scan the system for virus infections. Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD. You can then use this CD/DVD to boot your computer. The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available.

If your system has a working NIC, it is possible to update both the program and virus defs prior to running a scan. Comes up in German. Click British flag lower left corner for English. While I've played with it several times, did not have an infected system; so not fully checked out on it.

I created the Avira AntiVir Rescue System and put it in the computer and all I get is a line that says [emailprotected]:# and I can't get past that. Any ideas?its a stupid linux shell
try boot
or avira or scanit will only let you put in a number.

I copied explorer.exe off of another computer and renamed it zexplorer.exe and changed the registry to look for zexplorer.exe and I now have desktop icons and taskbar, however, when I go into device manager there is no hardware listed no matter what options I try and I can't get online, and I can't get any virus or spyware programs to run. I got Malware bytes to install by changing the name of the install file from something other tham mbam install. Any other ideas as to how to get it to do a scan?Quote from: buddyclm on August 31, 2009, 09:04:49 PM

it will only let you put in a number.

1. Say What? It's supposed to boot from CD into a GUI program. The only time I see anything similar to your command prompt "[emailprotected]:#" is when I choose the "Commandline" button from the main GUI Window. This gives me a warning that I'm about to enter command window and must hit "ALT-F7" key combination if I wish to later return to GUI window. Once in command window, I see command prompt string "[emailprotected]:/#".

Perhaps it would be best to practice on a "working" system.

3. Avira Tools Forum. Avira Tools - Support Forum

4. Boot Sequence. This is my personal observations of successful boot sequence of a 30 June 2009 Avira Rescue System CD.

When I startup with bootable rescue system CD in CD-ROM drive, I see following text screen display:

then display goes black for several seconds and a Penquin (~ 2 by 2 inches) appears for several seconds, top left corner of display.

The Avira AntiVir Rescue CD main GUI screen appears covering entire display. Basically has left-hand navigation pane and right hand program/ data pane. Two flags displayed bottom left corner, German and British. Click on British flag if you prefer English language display. This screen will show activity as it loads program and virus defs into MEMORY and mounts devices. I believe it will also attempt internet access to update program and virus defs if not current. When done says something like "AntiVir successfully updated itself".

Is this what you see or are you booting straight to a command prompt?Hi, try moving the explorer.exe with the cut option in system32 or somewhere else and watch if a new explorer.exe appears in your %windir% (It should be replaces with a fresh copy). If it's replaced with a new copy, run it and see it explorer starts now, if not u got a corrupt explorer or reg errors. Try placing the explorer.exe I uploaded in ur windows.

Never ran on an infected system so not sure of its behavior.

She can't. They've already got her contact list. But she should run a virus check. By the way, so should you. They may have yours as well now!

Solve : Randomly Loosing wired internet connection, but wireless works fine!!!????

Answer»

Running windows xp on a pc.....
We have been experiencing random drop offs on the wired connection to the desktop which is wired directly into the cable modem. We also have a d-link router connected to the modem and the wireless connection HAS NO PROBLEMS...
Called Comcast, we have no signal problems, which is evident with the wireless working.
This, to not so computer savvy me, means its a desk top problem....
I can always reconnect the desk top to the internet after a drop off by clicking on CONTROL panel, clicking network connections, disabling the internet connection and the enabling it again, But doing this every 2-10 minutes doesn't let you get anything accomplished!

One questionably important tidbit...We have a "warning" that is popping up from microsoft that we may be the victim of counterfit software, as we had to reformat our hard drive several months ago, and our computer came pre-installed with the XP and we were not provided a disc....You get the picture. I don't know if this may be the issues or not.

Also, There was No virus protection on the desktop!!!??? So I have run Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and cleaned up a few problems, also installed McAfee and run a complete scan, cleaned up a little more.
Been reading though a few similar posts and ran HijackThis and Remove It Pro
Restarted a hundred times
But I must admit, with hijack this, I didn't know what items were valid and what were not, so I did not "fix" file information it produced.

Currently running another complete McAfee scan to see what it turns up....
I would appreciate any help that anyone could provide, with no virus protection for so long there is just no telling what may have been picked up....and this could be the problem, and then again maybe it's not!
Thank you in advance for any ideas!Quote from: indytoo on September 01, 2009, 06:49:40 AM

Let's see - no AV protection and a pirated version of the OS. Hmmmm. Yeah, I think we can guess your problem. Please don't be rude....
I am having a serious problem....
There REALLY is NO FUNNY business going on here.
Yes... I do not have a legal copy of my OS, because when we legally purchased our computer, a high end graphics computer, We did not get a copy of the software on disc, it was already installed. And quite frankly, it just didn't occur to me that we didn't have one until the hard drive crashed in Jan.
I have read that several other people on this site also have had similar no disc issues when they purchased their computers.
The reason there was no virus protection on the computer was probably oversite. My husband is an artist and he has all the adobe packages (LEGALLY!!) He didn't even realize that there was no virus software on the computer until we started looking into this problem.

When our desktop computer crashed at the beginning of the year, and we had to redo the hard drive we realized we didn't have an XP disc. We were also in the midst of changing internet/phone/cable companies. When we got Comcast instead of RCN we also changed Security Services. With all of the other things that had to be replaced he just never downloaded the new McAfee.
I have a Legal copy of XP on my personal laptop, but the XP disc's branding will not allow us to put it on any computer but a toshiba. AND I even have had the McAffee installed since January.

So please don't make a judgement about our situation, which is not how it may seem, and help us resolve our problem.
If there is someone out there with constructive assistance ideas to help us resolve our problem, it would be more than appreciated.
You're right - my post was unnecessarily sarcastic. So let me attempt to explain politely:

1) Unless I am completely misunderstanding your two posts, you've installed a pirated version of the OS (and the fact that others on this site are also violating the law doesn't make it right). Regardless of the reason or "justification", the fact is that it is not a retail version. The likelihood of problems arising as a result is not insignificant.

2) You were running your system without an AV. The likelihood of problems arising as a result is enormous.

3) McAfee is at the bottom of the list of software providers. Their products are, at best, not good.

How to address your problems?

1) Download a good AV utility (paid or free, your choice). Paid: Kaspersky, Nod, Norton/Symantec. Free: Avira, Avast, AVG
2) Uninstall McAFee and install the new AV. Update it and run a full scan
3) Download and run a full scan with Super AntiSpyware
4) Either purchase a retail version of XP and do a repair install or contact your computer provider and ask them for a copy of XP and do a repair install. Each copy of XP is licensed to one compter.Thank you for your apology...I have not intentionally created these problems, and as I said in the other posts, the desk top is totally my husband's territory.

This has been really frustrating and I am really not a "computer" person.
I just have way more patience than he does to try to resolve these problems once they have occurred....

As far as not having the AV installed, I was screaming at him about it not being on his computer too, especially since we have so much personal information on it.

The XP issue is being worked on, I already have a call in to the retailer....

I guess there is no other way to find out the original information from the desk top since we reformatted it in January....correct?

I will follow through with the the AV providers, I had no idea that McAfee "SUCKED", so I will uninstall it and choose one of the other providers you suggest.

I was already following the steps for removing malware from another part of this site, which INCLUDED scanning with hijackthis and Super Spyware etc, from evilfantasy.

I will work on these issues and post a result asap.....

Thank you for your help I realize that this problem has been created by our misguided attempts to fix our last issue, but I really hope that THIS time we can fix it correctly.

Most of all, have PATIENCE with all of us out there who find these electronic contraptions fun to email, shop and play around with but haven't the slightest clue what to do when things hit the fan.....

you need to argue with the computer manuafurer to get a licence key
and xp without an antivirus is like going in space without a space suit
Spent most of the day doing that exact thing.... THEY CLAIM IT WAS AN OVERSITE.....SURE!!!
They are sending me a new copy by FedEX!!!!
Yeah for me.....
Sometimes the little guy wins!!!!

In addition, I ran all kinds of virus scans all day,
we've got the following:
Trojan horse Dropper.generic.AVZD.......in several places
Trojan horse Dropper.generic.AWAO
Trojan horse downloader.generic8.BKAT
Trojan Horse Nakgo.A
and last but I'm sure not least.....
Backdoor.Bot

Now I do not know what to do with these files, I can't seem to find a place on the internet to tell me how to "clean them out"? but I'm still looking.
Right now they are just sitting in a quarantined folder of some sort.
What do I do with them know?
What if I need that part of the file they are attached to if I can't get rid of the Trojan?
That is why I am afraid to just delete them....

But you should all be very proud of me, I actually was not having a problem caused by these little Trojans, (I think)....
I noticed, as I stated in my initial post, that if I kept disabling our internet connection icon in the network connections, (even though it always said there was an internet connection when windows said there was not), it kept identifying the connection as Nvidia network something. Somehow, I remembered that my husband just updated Internet Explorer and I wondered if the drivers for the Nvidia whatever were compatible with the new Explorer.....
So I went to the nvidia site and downloaded all new drivers for all the hardware we had and sure enough after a restart......We have had a internet connection ever since ! So far it has stayed on....
I may be actually learning something by reading all of these posts afteralll!!!!

I'll keep you all posted, but, so far, we're up and running.
Now if someone can just let me know what to do with all these messed up files without causing any more problems, I'll feel like a genius!!!
Thanks to all who helped with out even knowing it.......
If you read enough posts, your dreams just may come true!!!!I would copy and burn any data you need from that machine and once the CD's arrive format and do a clean install of XP...Quote from: patio on September 02, 2009, 06:25:24 AM
I would copy and burn any data you need from that machine and once the CD's arrive format and do a clean install of XP...
That would have been my next suggestion too.
But by COPYING everything I need from the desktop won't i just wind up copying some of the trojans/viruses with the other files?
I thought I should clean them out from all of the files then copy over my file and reformat once the disc comes tomorrow.....
Please advise....
ThanksScan the files with all your protection packages before burning them...Yes yes, I understand that, but the files that have been identified as having trojans are not "cleanable" and they are sitting in a special virus file, can I just erase them or can they be files I actual will need.....
I'm a little lost now as to what to do with the identified filesThen ignore them if they are infected...not sure why you would want them in the first place...

Solve : Crashing computer at random (blue screen)?

Answer»

Use Comodo if you want a third-party firewall.

Also, uninstall the Netgear drivers, go to another computer, download the latest drivers and save to a flash drive, connect flash drive to your computer, and install the new Netgear drivers.I'm not sure, if firewall is a problem.
It all started with Netgear card, and I suspect it may be causing errors in any other program, which has anything to do with internet connection (AVG, firewall, ETC.).
I may be wrong though.
Can you POST the newest dmp file?I have done a better install of the drivers. Last time I couldn't find the old driver as on the WEBSITE it told me to remove the stick before un-installing... So this time I un-installed while the stick was in the computer and then reinstalled it cleanly.

I also installed Comodo (I like) which seems to be making my computer run better so far. We will have to wait and see tomorrow when I get home from work!

Thanks guys,

Lol

You'll need your installation disk if you want to reinstall Windows... There's no need to uninstall ANYTHING first... Just put your installation disk in, making sure that your CD drive is set as priority over the hard drive, in CMOS..

Clean Install of XP...Are your prepared to lose everything on the drive? If so, just boot to the XP CD, FORMAT, and install.make sure that you have a majorty of the drivers needed.

Solve : Installed new hard drive and won't work?

Answer»

I upgraded from a 60GB HARD drive to a 320GB hard drive. Copied everything from the 40 to the 320. When unhook the 40 and start up with 320 it goes to start up and goes to a black screen saying Disk error occured press ctrl + alt + del to restart. there are no disks in the computer. The other hard drive will start up just fine though. Any ideas? Is that a SATA drive or IDE?

The 40G can't simply be copied to the NEW drive...
What method did you use ? ?

Travel to the manuf. site of the new HDD and DLoad their disk utilities...FREE.
Create a bootable CD following the info at the site.
Hook up the old drive as primary or master with the new one as secondary or slave.
Use the "Clone Drive" option of the utility with the old drive being set as the source and the new drive set as the target...
Let it run to completion...DO NOT interrupt it for any reason.

When FINISHED remove the old drive and hook up only the new drive as primary or master.
Once it boots properly and everything checks out you can then re-introduce the old drive format it and use it for extra storage...Quote from: mp3chic on September 02, 2009, 09:21:20 AM

Solve : Computer start up with black screen with white flashing line?

Answer»

When I power up the computer, the intel screen comes up and quickly goes AWAY and then a black screen with a flashing white line comes up and I can't do anything. My HUSBAND told me to eject the CD drawer and close it and well the computer started up perfectly! What can I do to fix this? I am replacing the hard drive with a larger one today. Was there a cd in the drive when you cycled it?No. The top disk drawer was stuck and i fixed that. But i was opening and shutting the one below that. Now everytime i cut on the computer i have to open and shut the cd BURNER drawer. Odd. Anyway, LOOK in the bios and see if the hd is at the top of the boot order. If not, move it there. You can always put the cd back on top if and when you need to boot to a cd.Disconnect the power cable from the top disk drawer...with all power DISCONNECTED of course.
Plug in the PC and re-boot.i will try that. THANK YOU!!It was the boot setup Good to hear you're fixed up and Welcome Aboard !

Solve : auto log off?

my friend has an compaq pisarrio runnin xp everytime he logs in it auto restarts how can he fix this problem, he said after he downloaded norton anti virus thats when problems started,he also cant run in safe mode any help appreciatedYou're going to want to try a Repair Install:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

(you will need the Windows CD)thanks for your reply is there any other way of fixing it I don't see how.

Note: Repair Install will not remove any of your files. Is he able to boot into Safe Mode with Command prompt?

do that, and type:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

press enter, give it a few moments and see if it will allow him to restore the system to before Norton was installed..no he cant go in safe mode it does the same thing as SOON as he as logged on the main screen comes on for a second and logs off straight awayTry removing one of the memory modules and see if it boots...
You MAY have some bad RAM....... If you have two ram modules, remove one, and see if it works... If it doesn't, put the other one back in, removing the other one and try again..

If you only see one memory module in the COMPUTER, remove it and power one the comptuer... Some laptops have onboard ram that cannot be removed, so removing the additional ram stick is all you can do..

OK il try that cheers il be back with the verdict

Solve : slow keyboard?

My keyboard is very slow- drops lots of letters- is better if I type very slowly but still drops letters- bought a new keyboard but that didn't help- seems better on some websites and worse on others- also having problems closing some pages- I have to go to task manger to shut down to close tabs.Is it only on websites or is it also in apps (Word, notepad, etc)?

Run full scans with BOTH your AV and with either Malware Bytes or Super AntiSpywareNot in word- WEB sites only- but not this website- yahoo email and facebook is what I use most and it is really bad- also my son's school website- this web site is not doing it at all- AVG last ran this am and the problem is about two weeks old- I'm rescanning now. Any more suggestions? I'm quite COMPUTER illiterate but am moderately intelligent so with a little help I should be able to do anything suggested.Does this happen in all browsers or just IE? If you haven't tried, download either Firefox or Opera and give it a try. What is IE? I'll find firefox online?IE = INTERNET Explorer (the default browser built in to Windows)
Firefox and Opera are well known and excellent alternatives - and they are free. They will not replace Internet Explorer, just give you an alternative OPTION. Download either (or both) and install.I installed firefox and the problem seems to be gone. Thanks so much my aggravation level is DECREASED dramatically!firefox saves the day againWell, you're welcome but that doesn't really solve the problem, just gives you a workaround. You might want to try updating java.

Solve : Any good FREE TV sites out there? (Besides YouTube)?

Answer»

i would recomened agenst it
quite a few have the 2 following issues
A its illegal
B there is virusesnow that i think aout it AOL video its fairly goodWent through many of the links and removed illegal content and reguarding the original question try the below link Joost has one of the better collections of old cartoons.

http://www.joost.com/epg/us/shows/animation/cartoons_retro/I UNDERSTAND that is wrong to post oinks to legal sites. My question is:
How do we know the SITE is illegal?
The original post wanted to see TV shows, which are copyrighted, but made available by the networks. For example ABC will allow you to WATCH some regular shows after they have been aired.
As for movies, here is a legal site that talks about the issue:
http://www.mpaa.org/piracy_LegalOpt.asp
Please read this link! How I determine what is legal and illegal is the following:

* Is the site hosting the content? If not the site itself is not illegal however almost always the content they're linking to is illegal, e.g. just linking to files posted on sharing sites like zshare.
* Does the TV show have ads? Almost any content provider is going to have some type of ads if not and it's something that aired on TV it's likely illegal.

Unfortunately it's pretty confusing to know what is illegal / legal. However, following the above two rules should almost always eliminate the bad from the GOOD.Quote from: MomNEEDShelp on June 12, 2009, 02:58:35 PM

Any good FREE TV sites out there? (Besides YouTube & In2TV & CRACKLE)

Not looking for episodes of current shows really like those on NBC.com and/or NBC.com. I am looking more FULL EPISODES of cartoons like Scooby Doo or Dora the Explorer. Also, older tv shows like Everybody Loves Raymond, King Of Queens, I Love Lucy etc. Again, basically shows that are no longer on tv. Figure you guys would know where to look.

Also, when you MAXIMIZE the screen in Youtube & other TV places.... why is the picture blurry? (It's not blurry when it's small)

THANKS!!
They upload videos in 320*240 or 640*480.
If I watch YouTube in HD on a 1024*768 screen it is crisp.

Solve : Computer will only load Windows XP Recovery Console?

Answer»

I had previously been running Windows XP, then decided to install Windows 7.
Everything went great, Windows 7 was beautiful looking, but I decided that I'd be BETTER suited to just stick with what I know and love - XP.

I wasn't too sure what I was doing, but I restarted my computer, and played around with the settings in the boot screen, thinking that I would eventually find my WAY back to re-installing XP.

Long story short, I ended up *accidentally* switching the partitions on my drives, and now my computer will only boot to the Windows Recovery Console.

I keep logging onto C:/Windows, but I can't figure out what to re-enable/toggle with whatever it is that I messed up - which, I'm not exactly sure what I messed up...

Any help would be fantastic, and I'll be sure to check back often if anyone needs any particulars about my setup.

Thanks,
AnthonyQuote

Where is your XP OS installed to ? ?

From the RC type in fixboot and hit Enter...
Re-boot.
If no joy-joy repeat the process this time type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Again re-boot.
Good Luck.I would imagine that the XP OS is just installed to the default location.

I tried those commands and they didn't work.

When the RC boots up, it lists the drives on your computer.
And then it tells you to pick which one you want to log-on to.

In my case, I have 3 options:
1) C:\Windows
2) D:\iniNT
3) D:\I386

And what happened is that I logged-on to either 2) or 3), then switched the partition (something to do with the boot sector?) away from 1). Now I can't figure out how to reverse whatever it is that I did. I would think that commands posted by 'patio' would do the trick, because it did tell me that I was switching the boot sector back to C:/Windows, but when I reboot my computer, all I've got is the RC...So you have yet to try my recommendations...Quote from: patio on September 01, 2009, 06:06:10 PM
So you have yet to try my recommendations...

My posting at 5:33pm today was in reply to your recommendations.
Sorry, I'm just not quite familiar with how to post on this site.1. Hard Drives. How many hard disk drives are attached to the system? Did you keep them as "basic" disks or did you change them to "dynamic"?

2. Partitions. How is each drive partitioned? Primary partition(s), extended partitions, logical volumes within extended partition, something else? Which primary partition is SET "active"?

3. Windows 7 Boot Loader. Did you make any effort to remove the Windows 7 boot loader or attempt to restore the Windows XP boot loader?

4. Recovery Console. Is this the Windows XP recovery console? And at some point you installed it to the hard drive?Quote from: dahlarbear on September 01, 2009, 08:42:58 PM

Oh boy.
Where to begin...
Some of the things you've asked, I'm not even sure what they mean/are.

1. 2 hard disks, C:/ and D:/, C: is Windows and D: is some kind of HP recovery console that was pre-installed on the machine. I never switched anything with the disks, that I know of. So I imagine that they'd just be "basic" discs.

2. I know that C:/ was the primary partition, then I accidentally switched it to something on one of my D:/ -- In the RC, there are 3 options for me to log on to:
1) C:\Windows
2) D:\iniNT
3) D:\I386

What I did was switch the primary to either 2 or 3, now cannot seem to get it back to 1, despite using the commands. It says that I've switched it back when I type certain commands (fixboot, fixmbr), but when I reboot my computer, nothing has changed, i.e., only RC will load.

3. Did not make any attempt to do anything with the boot loaders, although, my ORIGINAL intention was to go back to XP; but, in regards to what you're asking, no. I did not remove or restore any boot loaders.

4. This is Windows Recovery Console, and I did not install it to the hard drive myself. It must have come preloaded like that.1. Model Number. OK, you have an HP computer. Can you give us the complete model number from the sticker or plate (which also has serial number and Product ID)?

Is this a desktop or laptop?

2. Hard Drives. Are you sure you have two "physical" hard drives? I'm beginning to think you have one physical hard drive with two logical drives on it; "C:" and "D:".

3. Windows 7. Where did you install the operating system to; the "C:" drive? Did you uninstall it, delete its partition, or remove it? How ? ? ?

Was it a "dual" boot machine; i.e. did you have the option of booting to either Windows XP or Windows 7 (when everything was working well)?Quote from: dahlarbear on September 01, 2009, 10:37:59 PM

1. This is a desktop PC.

Model # - Pavilion a1560n
Product # - EXQ78AA#ABA
Serial # - MXX6220752

2. I'm not sure at all if there are two "physical" hard drives. It's just the standard HP computer, so if they don't come with two physical drives, then I would imagine that they're probably "logical" drives.

3. I installed Windows 7 to the default location, which I would imagine is "C:" drive. Basically, when I opened the .exe for Windows 7, I just clicked install, and... installed it.
Did I uninstall Windows 7?? I don't think I messed with it at all. What happened is that when I rebooted my computer (while Windows 7 was still working), it would make me physically click to load Windows 7 from the boot menu, as well as there being other options, and something about Windows XP which is what I clicked on thinking I would find myself being able to reinstall that, and somehow I ended up messing with the menu I've mentioned (1. C:\Windows , 2. D:\MiniNT , 3. D:\I386), and entered a command into either 2. or 3. and that switched something away from C:\Windows (the boot sector, or partition).

To my knowledge, it was not a dual boot machine. Like I said, I would have to choose Windows 7 from the boot menu, but I obviously couldn't get into Windows XP (as I thought I might be able to...).

Solve : computer freezes when trying to load Windows?

After I TURN on my computer I receive this error message: "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or SOFTWARE change might have caused this."

I've tried starting it in Safe Mode, Last Known Configuration, Normal mode, and just letting it count down but every time I press a button, it freezes.

Here are some of the solutions I've tried.

Unplugging it, pressing the power button 10 secs uplugged, disconnecting all hardware except PC and moniter, letting it sit all night unplugged. I don't know what to do.

I have a hp 700 if that helps. Thanks. What's the inside of your computer look LIKE? Is there a lot of dust? When you power on the computer, are all fans spinning? What is different between the last time the system started normally and the first time it didn't (new hw, sw, virus, etc)? Two weeks prior I installed a CD-ROM dinosaur game for my kids that didn't act just right so we didn't play it. I wasn't sure if it was going to work anyway because it was for Windows 2000. That was the only thing installed within the last 6 months. The fans are all working FINE and I CLEARED all the dust but still no change. It sounds like it may be a hardware issue and that's not really my strength. Solve : NTLDR Copy Access denied!?

Answer»

Hey everyone,
My noebook HP Compaq nc6400 RUNNING XP Professional Updated to SP3 was running just fine, resently displayed the NTLDR missing ERROR, I´m sure that its not the SP3 upadte that caused this because i installed the update in January and it has been working just fine. This just started today.
I tried to copy the NTLDR file from an original XP CD, when i type the command copy D:\i386\NTLDR C\: i get the following error
Acess is Denied.
What could be wrong?
The file system in the NoteBook is NTFS. Could this be the issue?

Any tricks to bypass this issue?
Appreciate 1) Boot to your XP CD and choose the first Repair option (press R) - this will take you to the Recovery Console
2) Once you are at the command prompt enter the following two commands (press ENTER after each):
fixboot
fixmbr

3) Type EXIT and press ENTERThanks for the post,
I forgot to mention on my first post, i did that too, tried fixboot and fixmbr and i tried it just now again.
still no solution.

Any other idea.
My main concern is why i get the Acess is Denied error when i attempt to copy D:\i386\NTLDR C\:
Please helpI assume you are working at the Recovery Console? If so, it's because you NEED to enable a couple of "switches" in the Recovery Console in order to access off-disc media and multiple paths. In order to make these CHANGES you need access to the Windows Registry, which you don't seem to have.

Meanwhile, just do a repair install (boot to the XP cd and choose the SECOND repair options)Yes i´m working on Recovery console,
I will try the SECOND repair options and will post back.
Thanks for the helpThank me when we're up and running

Solve : Reload HP Desktop with Windows?

Answer»

I TURNED on my PC yesterday and got the message "Error file is either missing or corrupt". It is a Hal file and Windows cannot load. I have an authorized Windows Installation Disk, but I don't know how to load it. Windows will not open under any OPTIONS including all of the "Safe Modes", and I tried running the CD through my External DVD unit, but it won't start. Thankfully I have this ACER Notebook, but it has a problem also. It was recently reloaded with Windows because the Wi-Fi stopped working. After the new Windows installation, the Wi-Fi still doesn't work, but I'm using an external Wi-Fi that works just fine. I am pretty good at fixing issues on my computers without any assistance, and my friend is even better. We went through every option numerous times to connect to the internet and got a connection to the wireless network, but it still wouldn't connect to Internet EXPLORER. So, my 2 questions are: How do I load the Windows (authorized) CD onto my HP Desktop? And how do I get my internal Wi-Fi card in my Acer Laptop to work? If anyone can answer these, I will bow down to you for a year. Sincerely, jamesgodzilla1) Boot to your XP CD and choose the first Repair option (press R) - this will take you to the Recovery Console
2) Once you are at the command prompt enter the following two commands (press ENTER after each):
fixboot
fixmbr

3) Type EXIT and press ENTER

If you still get the error message you can either restore the hal.dll file or do a repair install. I prefer the latter. Come back if necessary and we'll WALK you through the next step.

I couldn't get my full system info because my mouse only carries out certain tasks. I can open from 'start' but I can't activate any of the keys.

I can get webpages from my bookmarks, but can't open any links on the pages.

I have tried to run a diagnostic programme, but again, I can't open it. I tried to run defrag but can't even open that.

Thanks for your help.

What I can do is use the laptop through a good part of the day and then it just stops doing things one after the other. Can you get to safe mode to run AV & MALWARE SCANS?I don't know what safe mode is.

I was able to do a Malware scan, I even updated malware first. It found 1 trojan horse in the registry. I deleted it. and it found

'Files Infected:
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\atmgr.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> No action taken.

which I also deleted.

It still doesn't make a difference.

Solve : Media center not working?

Answer»
when I click on media center to watch t.v. this is the message I get
Decoder Error - The video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed

How do I correct this please??
It looks like some missing codec.
Get this: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
I finally figured out what was wrong. The media center would not work (live t.v.) nor would windows media player PLAY a dvd movie. It was missing a decoder. I tried to find a free decoder to no AVAIL. I purchased one from NVIDIA for $20.00 and both are working like a charm. I don't know what happened to the decoder, but it was gone. I woudn'g know how to get it back either...An nVidia decoder ? ?Yes a decoder from NVIDIA. My graphics card is NVIDIA, there were a lot I could choose from, but I CHOSE NVIDIA. All working perfectly now.. Just wanted to share this so there could be closure to my post. They don't charge for them which is why i asked...where did this come from ? ?If you can find free decoders that will work, I would like to know where. I looked and could not find anything. They offer decoders for a price. This came from NVIDIA..ClickThis says "Free Download" Does this mean after you download it for free, when you go to install it you must pay? Most so-called "free" downloads are exactly that, you can download them, but you cannot install with out paying. I dont' want to TRY it because I don't want to mess up my computer, but I suspect that is what this is. I will keep the link however and see if it is really free or not..How would I know if this was a "free" installation??Read the article...at the bottom it tells you how to register it for Free...

Solve : help please w/freezing computer?

Answer»

my computer is a mess...really slow and constantly is freezing. Error messages saying that ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address and now there is another error message --

"provider REGISTERED in WMI namespace to use the LocalSystem Account. Account is privileged and provider may cause a security violationif it does not correctly impersonate USER requests."

Would like to wipe out and start fresh but i cant figure out how to do that either. When I PUT the only XP disk in that I have it SAYS it can't install because the version i am running is newer.

Help please am extremely frustratedQuote

When I put the only XP disk in that I have it says it can't install because the version i am running is newer.

This is because you have installed Service Packs that are not on the original CD...
The solution for this is called "slipstreaming"...where you copy the XP CD into a directory...slipstream the Service Pack(s) into it and re-burn it to a new bootable installation cd...

The othe r alternative would be to borrow an XP CD of the same version and installed Service Packs you currently have and use it to re-install...completely legal.

Best Guide on Slipstreaming I've Ever Found...

Solve : xp booting through pen drive?

Answer»

how to make xp bootable through pen drive Why?
It can be done...however:

A) You will need a better than average experience with using command line arguments...
B) It will only run on the machine you create it on...
C) It runs pretty slow due to USB transfer speeds...
D) You'll need about a day and a half to spare to create it...

In short
Yes it can be done
Mostly it's a waste of time and effort...I can imagine creating a bootable pen drive that would substitute for a floppy, for use in a situation of e.g. damaged or missing ntldr, but installing XP on a pen (or any other external) drive is very very difficult verging on impossible. Out of the box XP REQUIRES an internal HDD. So hence I asked "Why?" to try to find out the OP's requirement.

Gotcha...
I've done this twice myself...just to work out that it CAN be done.
However it serves no practical PURPOSES...
The difficulty in doing this was actually by design starting with XP...Gates didn't want a ton of copies of his new OS floating around out there on bootable USB devices...hence the roadblocks in making it simple...i agree with both of you guys. I think a better solution would be BartPE or *CENSORED* Small Linux if you want to run an OS via pen drive to do repairs, but there is no sense in RUNNING full time. And hard drives are much bigger

ACTUALLY,I just downloaded that about an hour ago! It doesn't work that well. Maybe I have to restart my computer first. I want it to block You Tube, but it's not on the list that it's blocking. I will restart and SEE what happens. As I said earlier, you're not going to find a GOOD free ad blockerBlock youtube ads? As in the videos? Not going to happen with any adblocker I think. Even blocking google ads doesn't work.
