I know for a fact, that in some cases, changing SMTP port helped.Hmmm - had looked there Broni but all I have showing is the entry FORM field for the SMTP info - no ref to any port choices.

I use netscape.

I'd advise you to change.

AOL has now officially announced that they will end the development and support of all Netscape browsers.

After February 1st 2008, there will be no more development, support, or security patches for Navigator 9, or any PREVIOUS Netscape Navigator browsers.

Users are ADVISED to stop using the browser.
Agreed.

I suggest Mozilla Firefox:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/It's possible also that the issue lies in Hotmail itself....there are alot of people screaming about the changes.
Every so often MS decides to open it up and muddle around in there...changing things with seemingly no feedback or regard for it's users.
This is why i DUMPED it...years and years ago.Thank you for your help and advice. I switched to Mozilla and everything is fine!

Solve : Bootable cd/floppy??

Answer»

Is it possible to make a bootable disk that runs windows 95/98, provided i have an install disk and COA?Are you running 95/98? If so then a floppy is probably way to go as BIOS may (or may not) support a change to CD as first boot option.

The most basic boot back then was IIRC command.com to get you into DOS. Then include the ''usual'' tools.

"COA" - not with you - tho maybe should beSo all you have to do is copy some files to a disk? If so, then which files do i need to copy? You haven't confirmed you are running 95/98 but I am thinking you are?

I cannot recall the route to do this but seem to REMEMBER there was a facility within that would make you a boot disk and add all the NECESSARY files - well, a boot to ''c'' prompt anyways.

I have a copy of DOS 6.22 on one of my servers - the three floppy set of files in a zip - from that you can copy to three floppies. The first disk will act as a boot to get in. If you want that I will let you know the url if you message me.Sorry. I forgot to mention that i have win 98. I just found out my floppy drive aint WORKING. .Hmmm - well, is that a faulty floppy drive or does the system not ''see'' it?

If it shows in device manager and present as an "A" drive then a new one could be worth getting - they are very cheap these days.
Not sure what it is that you need to do, after you boot from floppy or CD.
But, have a look around here: www.bootdisk.com .

You've said your floppy drive doesn't work - much of what is on that site is for making bootable floppies, but I think there are also files for making bootable CDs. Maybe that would help you.ChrisXPPro: The FDD appears windows just says 'A: drive not ready' or something like that. Jameco sells FDDs for ten bucks. WillyW: Thanks for the link.UPDATE: I used Ubuntu to make a FAT16 500 MB partition. Then I used the built in formating tool (windows 98) to 'Copy System Files' (to the new partition, D drive.) Then I copied WIN.COM to D drive. Then I made NEEDED changes to BOOT.INI. I rebooted and selected the new option, D:. It said somthing about a missing file. I booted win 98, used Find, and copied the missing file. Then, when I rebooted into D:, it said that HAL.DLL was missing. I cant find it. Please help me.Just on the off chance I searched in an old CD from way back - which had all my win files backed up from '95 days. No dll of that name so drew a blank I'm afraid.

Maybe someone else can help - or, have you tried a google search on the filename.?

Solve : my speakers dont work and monitor also keeps saying no signal?

Answer»

If monitor shows a ''no signal'' on screen then it should be Ok itself.

The advice re turn off (unplug) puter is good - an ATX with power cord still in back of PSU is not TOTALLY ''dead'' ..... tho risk of dangerous shock is minimal IMO - more to the point is the slight risk of shorting something out inadvertently while fishing around.

Hoping that a reseat of vid card just might help. Oh and, INSPECT pins in VGA cable to make sure all 15 are in good shape each end - unless you are DVI connected.jj: i checked the monitor by hooking it up to a different computer. It came on. So its not the monitor. Its the computer.

I had a question. This setup of the MOTHERBOARD is different, I am attaching an image. In the image, the port where the video connector attaches isnt near any video card or audio card. So how would I know which one is the video card?

Oh nuts, how do I attach an image
Sounds LIKE you have an on board video card.

If indeed that has failed and you have spare PCI slots or even an AGP - you could get a better quality card, shut off on board vid thru BIOS and then enjoy better video than before and hopefully cure the monitor output problem.

Have you checked that VGA cable tho - just to be sure no pin problems at either end.chris yes i checked the vga cable no pin problems. By the way, how do you put an image in this reply?
Under the reply window message box .... look below at ''additional options" ........ the ''attach'' is where you browse to your own image location on your puter.

It must be an acceptable format and size.oh okay thanks

jj and chris :
this is what the inside of the computer looks like. The place where the monitor atttaches to the computer does not have an attached card, the cards are to the side, so how would I know which one is the video card

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Well - that's a bit basic!

I do think tho the chances are you have an ''on board'' video - meaning that the chipset etc is INTEGRATED into your motherboard.

So - if that has failed then by shutting down the on board thru BIOS you could well add a new card (and a better one) to your PCI, PCIe or AGP slots.Does anyone else have access to that computer? I'm thinking that someone may have unplugged it and then plugged you cables back into the wrong ports. If you have a motherboard with on board video and you manufacturer added a video card then there should be two places on the back of the computer that the monitor will plug into. Are there two?JJ: No there is only one 15 pin port on the back of the computer, not two. Should I just try reseating the cards both of them? It wouldnt hurt would it, cause one is the video card (even though I dont know which one it is), and the other is the sound card I guess, but even if I reseat them, it shouldnt do any harm right?

Chris: First, how do I get into BIOS if the computer doesnt give out any video signal?
Quote

Chris: First, how do I get into BIOS if the computer doesnt give out any video signal?

Good point!! I was thinking that you'd have basic vga at that stage of boot but - if zilch then yeah - no BIOS access. Sorry - was thinking of most usual situations. Tricky.

Solve : win 2000 to xp?

Answer»

I have a compaq E700 laptop that I just bought. The Floppy drive, cd, worked fine. It had win 2000 on it, and it worked fine. But w2000 does not have a SYSTEM RESTORE prog. Win XP does and I need that prog. So I attempted to load xp over W2000 as a dual operating system. MY laptop has a 13.5 gig HD and about 190,000 mb of memory. The first time I did it win xp was a bad load. so I tried again and made a mistake of formatting the hd with ntsf. The first time I did not.

Needeless to say , now I have absolutely NOTHING.

Each time I try to load xp, now on the 10 th try, I get a very quick flashing note and then the puter begins to reinstall. This is the vicious circle that I am now facing.

The best I can read the flashed note is as follows.
"a write operation in an attempt..... to complete.....after .... the API"
the ..... = missing words. It flashes to fast and connot be read.

The second problem.

After initializing the f 10 button to get to the bios, I changed the boot sequence from Hard drive to both the cd and the floppy.

I have a beautiful floppy which has on it MEANS to fdisk, format and load to the c drive the INITIAL startup progs. Now I cannot get to the floppy. I get an error code "Remove all media and click any key to continue.

I have original win 95, win98, win98s and xp cd's. I do not have win 2000.

I just tried to format, using the xp cd to non ntsf, hoping I might be able to install win 95 or 98. That also failed.

Now I am staring at a black useless laptop. I NEED HELP>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am WONDERING what causes youy to need the system restore prog?

If win 2000 works fine, then what's the problem? If you're attempting to install win XP just to use system restore hoping to RECOVER win 2000 or osmething like that, it most likely won't work.If your Windows 98 boot disk isn't working properly download one from http://www.bootdisk.com and then try running fdisk and then format with FAT32.
It may be the Hard Drive that has died, or a bad partition table.

Let me know how it goes.here's an idea.

try installing linux onto your laptop. Linux is free to download and install. Then once you have verified that linux is all working and good ....

Then try your windows cd again to see if it will format your computer, removing linux and leaving you with windows.

Just an idea, but if Linux works, at least you'll still have access to internet and other basics while you attempt to get windows back to your laptop.

Solve : PC can not boot with external drive connected?

Answer»

Just installed a new external HARD drive (usb), the drive works fine. When I restart, the pc freezes and will not load windows until I unplug the usb drive and force a restart. With the external drive hooked up, if I shut windows down instead of restart, and wait 15 seconds and then start the pc, it boots up and works fine. Any ideas?Try getting into the BIOS and make sure your Primary (Master) Hard Drive is set to boot first.
I THINK the computer may be trying to boot from the USB Drive.I agree it is trying to boot to the usb hard drive. My question is why does it only try to boot to the usb drive when I restart not when I shut down and then start?Beats me. All I know is that it happens on my Desktop as well.

Have you changed the boot order to see if this is the case?I haven't changed the boot order, but I have checked the boot order and it is cd rom then my primary drive. Quote from: pjz153 on November 08, 2008, 09:20:55 AM

I haven't changed the boot order, but I have checked the boot order and it is cd rom then my primary drive.

I think you are wrong.

If the boot order is "cd rom then my primary drive" it is unlikely to be trying to boot from the external drive, unless by mistake it thinks your external drive is a CD ROM or your Primary drive.

Why did you say "I agree it is trying to boot to the usb hard drive" ?
Have you seen evidence to this effect in the system Event log ?

I suspect you may have been DECEIVED by access activity of the External Drive. This does NOT mean it is being booted from.

My system start up takes 20 seconds longer now that I have an External drive. This is because XP Home edition seems to inspect all the directory structures on all partitions before it gives me control. It used to take even longer until I archived as a solitary disc image one complete partition with 40,000 files, and then deleted the original 40,000 files.
I believe the start up inspection means that when I aim Windows Explorer at any part of the External drive, the Access Activity LED remains OFF because Windows has already cached all the directory information and does not need to take another look.

Another reason is that Windows may want to run any AUTO run files on external / removable devices, and if it cannot find them it looks for various things such as video files or music files etc. etc., and then, again before it yields control, it will offer to run whatever applications it thinks appropriate to the files it found. If it has found something which merits this treatment, perhaps there is some Windows error which prevents success, and this could lockup the system permanently.

If you still have difficulty, I suggest you use Event Viewer to inspect the logs, especially the System Log, to observe the difference between a successful start up and a failure. N.B. I do not know if this is dangerous, but I have just launched TWO instances of Event Viewer, and this allows me to view start up sequences simultaneously and side by side, rather than looking at one sequence and trying to remember what I saw two pages earlier. I have now closed the Event Viewers and nothing has been broken.

Alan

Solve : Windows XP can't load because of blackout and crash?

Answer»

Please help me.... I had a computer Acer (AcerPower Series) and then something bad happen, my home was blackout and of COURSE my computer malfunction and crash... since that, I realize that when I turn on my computer, its blank and do not load Windows XP properly (totally black), and can't through Windows XP safe mode. Then i thought the solve of this problem was put inside the Windows XP SP2's CD into the optical disk, then it say to click any key and I did it, but same thing was happen; totally black and don't see any word. As you know, the hardware are ok and good; the proof is I actually installed two OS, the first was Win XP and the second was Xubuntu (linux), and when I turn on my computer and it will be directly into MBR(grub) and I choose xubuntu and its work(can play games, surf internet, ect.), but the windows was the problem; it cant work properly.... So any advice to me?

.:.Here is my computer speculation:

-AcerPower Series
-Pentium 4(1.8Ghz)
-Ram(256)
-HDD 60gb (40 Gb + 20 Gb)

thats all.... Please help me, I would not format my computer because it had a very important data Boot to the XP CD and at the first prompt PRESS R to enter the Recovery Console...
This will be a black command prompt screen.
When you are sure it is finished loading at the prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter.
Then type in fixmbr and hit Enter.
Remove the XP CD and re-boot.
Give it time to load fully and XP should start normally now. When I put my windows XP CD, the message appear "setup is inspecting your configuration" and then nothing.
Please help me. The CD did not work properly even I use another CD .... Are these both Microsoft XP CD's ? ?Yes these both are windows xp cd. (oem and pirate)An OEM needs to match the machine identically......is it for this machine ?
WARNING : ! An OEM CD will wipe all your data and programs and take the machine back to Day One status.
As you stated you don't want to format this is NOT what you should be trying.
Look into GETTING one of these:

2.5" laptop to IDE connector...about 8 Bucks at any PC shop.
Then you can remove the laptop drive and hook it up to any working Desktop machine and copy/burn your Data before going any further. Otherwise you stand to lose it all...Thanks to patio to help me but, my friend took my computer to repair. So, I close this case and thanks 4 help me......

here the answer for the question :

-->The OEM is not for this machine, but I used 4 try cd rescue......

-->2.5" laptop to IDE connector... Do you want me to copy the partition of windows and burn to another hdd just like cd and .iso...

I thing, the problems is my computer is not shutdown properly and it can't load windows. Actually, before my computer crash I was installed a new driver for VGA and than blackout (the installation is not complete 93%).... After a minute, the power comes back and I turn on my computer, then i realized my screen resolution is not same as before(bad things to look at). then, it HANG(crash) and I reboot, after a minute I was try to fix this problem by SAFE MODE Windows and try to remove the driver... and then something bad happen, the blackout happen again... SOB SOB .
After couple hour I turn on my computer, then it can,t load windows... that was an amazing , good , surprise , and ? ... huh.......

Solve : VGA disabled and now can't boot up?

Answer»

Hi all,
I stuppidly disabled my VGA adapter and now my computer continually reboots forever. There is a message about "no video input" during every cycle.
I tried rebooting to "safe mode"
I tried rebooting to "safe enable VGA mode"
I tried RESETTING the bios by shorting the pins on the motherboard.
I was going to look in win.ini but win2000 does not have one.

I'm stuck, can some one pleaaaaas help. can you try Bios settings VGA mode enable or disable. can you check? The BIOS is not going to re-enable your video adapter if it was disabled in Device Manager...this needs to be DONE in safe mode...
You say you can't get into it...what happens when you try ? ?

Power up and tap F8 repeatedly before you see the Windows splash screen...
When it starts to load it will be a black DOS style screen with lots of writing on it.
BE PATIENT. If it hasn't been ran for awhile it can take some time to load.
Once it finishes loading all your icons will be moved around and not look as sharp...this is normal.
Travel to Device Manager and re-enable the video and save the changes and re-boot.response to first question

There is no VGA on board and no VGA setting, unless there is some hidden commands like I read here that others have used.

I just tried it again and I wrote the wrong message altogether it was "no signal" on every iterative reboot, not what I said previously, as if the card just shut down completely. Where I killed the VGA was in the properties window in the drop down with 2 choices 1. use this device or something to this effect and 2. don't use this device. After that it did not work when going to windows from boot up. I can see everything on the SCREEEN until after the windows progress bar and it goes black before the normal blue windows is supposed to come on with the dialog box professing to be startingwindows the second time, then reboot occurs over and over like that.

my board is a brand new gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R/DS3 model and the video board is a brand new Diamond HD video board whose drivers just would not turn on the board. It seems like they load but even bofre that I could never change the VGA settings from 640x400 to 800x600 even though it was on option according to the properties display. It was in desparation that I did what i did, disable the vga, that got me into this problem.

Response o second question

Yes I've tried that but I keep getting the no signal message and the box automatically reboots, forever if I let it.
I'v tried most of the safe modes.

Question

Where does windows save this kind of info, in some ini file or some place else. Is it stored in battery backup ram so that if I remove the battery will it be reset?? I have not heard or seen that info anywhere.

Thanks for reponding. It doesn't make sense that it will not run in safe mode...Windows only loads generic drivers...enough to just boot the machine and run safe mode...it wouldn't see the malfunctioning drivers at all.

Are you positive you do not have onboard video on this board ? ?

The info is not stored in the BIOS so that won't help at all.

You could try removing the card and swapping another one in to see...but there's a possibility your Windows install is corrupt with the dual-boot setup.

>machine and run safe mode...it wouldn't see the malfunctioning drivers at all.

I can't get it to enter any safe modes at all.

>Are you positive you do not have onboard video on this board ? ?

Positive, checked the whole manual from cover to cover. and the Bios displays. Besides there is no connector for onboard video.

>The info is not stored in the BIOS so that won't help at all.

I kinda knew that since they stopped doing that are on win95 I think.

>You could try removing the card and swapping another one in to see...but there's a possibility your Windows install is
>corrupt with the dual-boot setup.

I don't have dual boot set up. What gave you that idea, maybe I'm not explaining myself properly?
I starting to think that it might be corrupted too right now, I was just hoping there was something I could do to reverse my actions and go on.

>If you find you do have onboard video remove the card and connect it and re-boot...

I'll try reseating the card but did that once already, maybe not good enough, after that I'm going to reload windows.

Thanks, to you all.
I tried reseating the card ==> no luck, has same problem

I tried another video card ==> no luck same problem.

Since this was a first build for this motherboard I'm just going to start over again. I remember seeing an error measage when downloading .net framework that said memory not accessible in a copy operation, I tried to copy a file from one DIRECTORY to another and could not do it at all, I ran check disk the next time it started up and there were problems. My hard DRIVE may be going out on me, It is only an 80 gb one so it must be fairly old, a couple of years at least, so it won't hurt to get a newer version with more gbs. This could explain a lot if I getting read/write errors or memory is fading. It's like me, getting really old and forgetting stuff I forgot I knew .

If we knew there were pre-existing conditions such as repetitive disk read/write errors ahead of time the diagnosis wouldn't have taken this long...
Good Luck with the new HDD.

Solve : batch script help for backups?

Answer»

I have a group of windows servers which i backup nightly to a BSD box. I have a single master.bat script which runs several .bat scripts, dumps them to a directory and the master.bat script ftp's them to the BSD server.

I need help writing a single .bat script that will look in a specific directory, backup anything in the directory. This way i can get RID of the several individual .bat scripts. The reason is is because sometime new things are added or taken out of this directory without me knowing and i want to make sure theyre caught.

How i have it now is i tar up the FOLDER i want to backup which creates folder name.tar
i move it to a backup directory
i gzip it so its folder name.tar.gz
then a master.bat script ftp's them to a BSD server.

I want to change it to:

a single .bat script looks in the same directory
creates individual tar files still using the folder names still putting it in a directory
the master.bat FILE still FTPS them

This seems easy but i DONT know batch so any help would be great!

Solve : Windows Backup Image?

Answer»

Hey there,

I recently reformatted my computer, and heard it was possible to create a total backup of a current operating system, with all settings applied, all programs INSTALLED, and all data intact.

After the hellish time I had FINDING drivers (lost my driver CD =P) this is DEFINATLEY something I am interested in.

I have a few questions about it though..

1. Can this backup be burned onto a CD and booted from and installed like Windows when installing/reinstalling?

2. Does anyone know of any recommended (**free is better**) Image software that can make a full backup of my operating system?

3. Can someone write a *quick tutorial (nothing fancy, I can deal with vague =]) on how to do this?

Help would be greatly appreciated!
Image It is possible to create a CD that is an automated install, meaning you just put in the CD and watch it install. This will install all the drivers ready for you when you begin to use Windows XP after a fresh install.

The software I would highly recommend is nLite. http://www.nliteos.com/guide/index.html This will guide you though how to use nLite and how to configure it for what you want.

Hope this helps. Not a freebie but Acronis is well thought of by some here.Quote from: DonkyCong on November 07, 2008, 02:08:33 PM

nLite although a FINE tool for what it does cannot make an image of an existing partition/drive...
Please PAY attention to what the OP wants to accomplish before SUGGESTING alternatives.
nLite is used to create a customised bootable CD of an OS and what else you want to add...it's not an imaging program.

Solve : Vista to XP??

Answer»

Two friends highly reccommended it, even though VISTA has been out now maybe 2 years. I have it, but have experienced some issues with programs and an occasional IE crash. I was wondering if anybody else made the switch, and why.If your computer is adequate to run Vista, no reason to go into downgrading problems.
Computer issues are not related to Operating System (except maybe for Windows ME).i just downgraded from vista .it was unistalling my printer and speakers.but if u jave no problem with vista stick with it I would NOT recommend it.
Your computer hardware is designed for Vista if your computer came with it.

Some of your hardware drivers might not even work in XP. As you can imagine, that can cause even more problems.
Depends on the machine and your personal preference...

Zylstra i DISAGREE a bit.

Saying a machine that shipped with Vista won't work with XP is a bit drastic...most hardware on Vista equipped machines had XP drivers written for it before it even saw a drive with Vista on it.

Best thing to do is research your machine as thoroughly as you can driver wise and then make your choice.
To each his own...patio
Check this: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Help-T-T-Vaio-Problems-t216784.htmlSure.
It happens.
And probably more so with laptops than any other machines...
*censored* i had a laptop with XP and none of the drivers worked from day one even after 2 or 3 revisions.

All i'm saying is it's a broad generalisation that only the consumer can decide on by doing the proper research and legwork.Agreed. Simply speaking, it's not a job for an average user, unless provided with couple of bottles of Advil, and Mylanta sometimes- it just TAKES some coaxing. I've downgraded a few machines to XP, and found that some devices that didn't have XP drivers could easily be run with a different one, from another OEM or older model, for example.

Sure, it isn't optimal. Basically, my policy is if I can't get XP compatible drivers for most of the on-board capabilities, I won't downgrade. This will become more and more common until downgrading to XP is a niche market supplemanted only by nerds and retro gamers.

And, of COURSE, a Side of cheerios.

THERE! I got a reference in.

Well, if xp is more convenient to you than vista is, then go ahead and downgrade.

Most devices you have should already have XP drivers for it since XP was alive for 5 years before Vista was BORN. So unless you have something that is Vista only, then I would not worry.

But I wouldn't downgrade annd just get used to Vista's learning curve, unless problems piled up to the point it makes me feel that computer should be thrown into the fireplace.Biggest problems you are likely to run into:

Hard drive drivers if you are using any kind of computer with a RAID system or a different SATA configuration

Video card drivers, which can result in lower quality graphics if you dont get the right driver, but, it should still work fine nevertheless

Sound drivers, it seems a lot of manufacturers manage to make sound drivers an issue... to think, the same technology since 1989, and they STILL cant figure out how to make it as universal as possible, yet, Linux will probably handle it fine...

Solve : How can I correct my XP clock using GPS clock??

Answer»

Hello,
I have a basic GPS module that is CONNECTED to my computer via serial port. I want to be able to correct my XP clock with the signal of the GPS (which contains ACCURATE timing).
Any ideas? Why not to use Windows own time checker?Because I am using another computer, and both to measure something, and the timing should be accurate and the same, on both of them
AdiDo a search for Atomic Clock....there's a ton of websites that can do this on each machine.
If the GPS unit supported doing this i'm sure it would say in the OWNERS Manual.Thank patio You got it...patio,
I saw the atomic clock softwares. It not good for me because I don't have Internet connection on that computer. And I also don't have the GPS manual any more...
I want to write some KIND of batch file that would do this operation. What I need to know is how to access the XP clock.
thanks!

Solve : SYSTEM RESTORE??? Please Help!?

Grrrrrrrrrrr............

Why can't I do a system restore?? I tried picking 4 different times/dates and each time I get a message STATING it was incomplete and to pick a new date. Something is not right.

I ERASED some stuff (big mistake) Wednesday around 8:00PM to try to speed up my computer, then had the BRILLIANT idea to do some kind of WINDOWS LIVE clean up at 10:04PM I NEED to get back to about Tuesday when I was NOT messing with my pc.

Please tell me what the heck I am doing WRONG. I am NOT technical at all so go easy on the explaination & help.

MANY THANKS!!Quote

I erased some stuff
System Restore deals ONLY with system (Windows) files, so it won't bring any "stuff" back.
1. As for System Restore not working, try Safe Mode.
2. As for deleted "stuff", try Recuva: http://www.recuva.com/

Solve : Is it possible to connnect to Xbox Live through a laptop??

Answer»

Is it possible to connect to Xbox Live through a laptop?

Like many people I have an Xbox 360 and PLAY Xbox Live. I recently heard that it was possible to connect to Xbox Live through a laptop computer as an alternative to buying a $100 wireless network adapter. I connect to Xbox live through an ethernet cable and therefore I am limited to one room in my HOUSE, but I would like to be able to play in other places. I figured using my laptop's wireless INTERNET connection would be a great alternative, but it has proven rather difficult. I haved scoured google and everything I'm told that will work doesn't. I've tried bridging my wireless connection to my LOCAL area connection and playing with all the settings, without success. And I've tried windows XP's network internet connection wizard many times. I have seen on many other blogs people who have the same problem as me and also have been unsuccessfull. This post is part of many attempts to try and find a solution so any help would be greatly appreciated.
As for myself, I'm using a Dell Latitude C840 running Windows XP connected wirelessly to a router.

Solve : disk space low- tried troubleshooting...?

Answer»

I recently installed itunes and music but put it all on my D drive on my laptop. However, since then, my C drive is saying its out of space. I cannot uninstall programs with Add/ REMOVE programs b/c it says I don't have enough space... (obviously...that's why I'm trying to delete...) I tried all of the suggestions found on this site (system restore options, hibernate, defrag, compress, etc) and I freed up a tiny bit but still won't allow me to delete programs.

The thing is, when looking through the installed programs, anything that uses a LOT of space is in the D drive, so I am not sure how I am out of space. Can I have a virus?

What can I do?All right, first thing I want you to do is go to My Computer and Right Click C Drive and go to Properties.
Tell us the Free Space, Space Used and Capacity.

Then do the same thing with D Drive

Also, what Operating System is this?C drive: 59.3 GB used, 2.20 free

D drive: 23.2 used, 51.3 free

It's Microsoft XP.

Again, all of my larger programs like Adobe video editing software is on the D drive, but still, bc it seems to be the largest thing on the comp, tried to uninstall and it wouldn't...Quote

Can you confirm that all your music is on D Drive.

Also, Download and install CCleaner
Once installed, make sure you check the following boxes:
Internet Explorer --> Temporary Files
Mozilla Firefox (if you have it) --> Internet Cache
System --> Temporary Files

That will clean your computer of unnecessary files.

I also suggest you move all your media like pictures, music and videos to D drive if you can.Quote from: danielleizzi on July 22, 2008, 04:07:24 PM

Is that 2.2 GB?it did read 2.2 GB. I fixed the problem. It seems I had my Adobe software on both the C and D drive...when I deleted it from C, it freed up half of the disk space. I also lost my itunes and all my music DISAPPEARED but I can transfer that again now that I have space.

thank you all for your responses. Glad I got this solved...now back to working on my network issueAll righty then. You should make sure you have at least 15% disk space free on C drive for BETTER performance. for reference... when you IMPORT music into itunes even if it is on another drive, it will put a copy on he drive that it is installed on.Wait a sec, I thought, iTunes stores list of files (libraries) only, not files themselves...Quote from: Broni on July 22, 2008, 08:53:51 PM

There is an option to have iTunes manage your library and keep all of the music in one folder, but maybe he meant the files are still there and he / iTunes can't find them now.

Solve : One particular site very slow to load?

Win 2K. One of the web sites I visit frequently suddenly has become VERY slow to come up, and very slow to read the next POST, etc. This has continued for more than a week now. The other sites I visit come up quickly. Have asked OTHERS if they experience this and they say no. Had my Son log onto it from his computer and it came up normally. Any ideas? Tnx. What is the site ?Clear the history and INTERNET cache from your web browser.

CCleaner is a great free program that will do the job (and more) for you - just spend some time on their website and read take the tutorial Quick Tour. http://www.ccleaner.com/

EDIT: If you install CCleaner, don't install the Yahoo toolbar unless you want it. The Yahoo toolbar has nothing to do with the operation of CCleaner,The site: http://www.pfs-ware.com/talkshop/

Tnx. It loaded fast for me you may try 'drmsucks 'IDEA with CCleaner.Took about 8 seconds to load for me - but inside the site was quick. When I went to CCCleaner I ended up with RegCure for $30. Before I pay for it is that what I need? Tnx. No. That's not what you need. You need Ccleaner without the toolbar and it's free.Quote from: SuperDave on July 28, 2008, 11:09:29 AM

Does it need a Restart to be effective?

Just to double check: a) what browser do you use? b) For IE, select at least the first three IE options, c) for Firefox, select all of the options (except Cookies, if you don't want to lose them), d) for either, select Temporary Files under System, e) go to Options>Advanced and deselect the first item regarding files over 48 hours. Re-run CCleaner.

Always a GOOD idea to re-boot. In fact, if you haven't done so in awhile, why don't you shut down, leave the computer off for 15 seconds, then power back on.

Solve : dodgy screen and resolution after xp reinstall - tried display settings. HELP?

Answer»

I reinstalled windows xp and everything seems to be ok but the screen is half size(box in the middle) and the resolution for video and photos is very bad. I have tried display settings to change the slide resolution but it wont move and cannot change adapter drivers either. Can you suggest anything.
ThanksWhen you reinstalled XP you LIKELY did not reinstall the proper drivers.

If you are USING a default driver the resolution is terrible and you can not change it with the slide bar in display settings.

You will need to install the video card driver for your specific video card. If you have the CD handy you are set. If you do not have the CD or do not know what type of video card you have you have a few options.

1. go to Device Manager and look for something with a yellow EXCLAMATION POINT. This is hardware that does not have the proper drivers installed, try to let windows find the driver for the device.

2. go to the manufaturers website for the computer if you bought a computer retail ie Dell, HP, Sony, Gateway, ext.. and have not changed the video card. Go to the support link and chose drivers or downloads. You will have to select the model of computer you have and then download and install the drivers. The exact web address is different for each manufacturer so I would google search to find it.

3. If you added in a video card and lost the CD you can go to the video card manufacturers website and download the driver from the support link. If you do not know the type of video card you have, open the box and look. Most video cards will have a small sticker or printing on the card with a model number and will clearly show the manufacturer of the card.

Solve : How do I get rid of name/password prompt for newsgroup access??

Answer»

Howdy All-

Brand new to this site and forum. It contains a wealth of info and I'm glad to have found it. However, after a fairly lengthy search I haven't found the answer to my problem. Or perhaps I didn't recognize it as the answer I need. And I'm not sure if it's even being posted in the right topic because I'm not exactly sure where the problem lies.

About a week ago my ISP went down for about 24hrs. When service was restored I had no trouble logging on and all seemed normal. When I try to access the newsgroups though, I now get prompt screens asking for username and password for newsgroup access. I don't recall this happening before. I haven't got a clue. I don't remember ever setting this up this way. I contacted my ISP tech help and to make a long story short they have no problem accessing the groups thru my account by just using my email addy. They cannot find anything on their end to prevent me from getting in.

I run an older unit with 98SE. I was getting the groups with the email/newsgroup tools in NETSCAPE 7.0., but was not using it for email. I am currently using Net 9.0 as my browser but left 7.0 on the drive just 'cuz. I have since tried three other packages and have the same problem with all(Thunderbird, xnews, ozum). They all WANT names, passwords or some type of authentication for access. I do not have a bios password. I do not have the 'Use password" BOX checked in 7.0 security preferences. I have deleted and rebuilt the account in all the packages I have tried. I do not have passwords encrypted in 7.0 or 9.0. There is nothing listed in password manager for newsgroup access.

This morning I pulled out my "backup" hard drive. It was a copy of what was on my drive from over a year ago. Has a lot less crap on it and doesn't even have Net9.0, just 7.0. DISCONNECTED my current drive, set my backup as master and fired it up. No problems at all until I tried getting to the newsgroups. Up comes name and password prompts. This makes it appear as if it is in the board/bios/? whatever on my computer and NOT in Windows? I'm not savvy enough to know.

I'm at a loss as what to do next. Any and all help will be MUCH appreciated.Your ISP wouldn't be Virginmedia in the UK would it?No, it's located in Arizona.
OK. (Hint: I wanted to know what it is called).
Try re-entering your user name and password info into Netscape again...possibly got corrupted. If it's Time Warner, they have discontinued usenet access. If it isn't, and you told us which ISP it is, maybe we could see if there have been any REPORTS of nntp server faults for that ISP.

Sorry! Don't wish to appear so dense. My access is DSL through my telephone company, Valley Telecom Group. VTC.net

They still provide usenet service, such as it is. As previously stated, a tech accessed my account without problem. However, I may not have been clear earlier in stating that they did not get the prompts that I do. They did not need a separate user name or password. They only required my email addy and password I have with them in order to access. And yes, I have tried that also.

>patio said:

I don't recall ever having done or having to do that when I installed netscape. I checked through Tools/options topics and found nothing. Didn't find anything thru the help topics. I'd be glad to do that if I knew where!

Good Afternoon.

I am running a Medion, Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz 2.81 GHz, 512 MB RAM w/Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.

Bought a Panasonix Lumix DMC LZ7 digital camera recently ALONG with the San Disk MEMORY card. Everything works great, unfortunately, when I plug the memory card from the camera into the computer (without using the USB cable, just plugging directly into the PC) only a fraction of the images appear. I have over 1000 pictures.

I have tried to research online and have found only confusion. Nothing wrong with the pictures on the memory card, and computer runs FINE always, cannot figure out how come only opens some, not others.

I have read the camera manual and also installed the software that came with the camera to no avail. These pictures are so very important, I am almost in tears TRYING to figure out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I have tried using system restore with the same result, hour glass and nothing? Can anyone help me or do I have to restore windows? Thanks. What about Safe Mode?It is the same, boots up but no programs open again. This might also be the time to ask:
Do you have updated antivirus, and antispyware/adware protection on your computer?

Did you upgrade to Service Pack 3?I am running AVG ANTI virus and have Zone alarm FIREWALL but did not update to SP3. Did you reboot?? Try that and if not working, it might be becuase if your computer is really slow when opening the programs, you're probably trying to execute the program again, before it is open so it is trying to open more than one at a time. Paint can be used to cut out any part of a screen print. Screenhunter is just tool that may make such tasks easier.
http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c152800a7698

I'm not sure if that link worked? Just click on any of the engine wiring diagrams.

If your using screenhunter, with the capture set on, (rectangular area), if you move the box over the wiring diagram, the IMAGE in the box, is very much out of focus, if you go ahead and click capture, then bring up the capture screen, the screen is blank, nothing there. You can capture the diagram or part of it using (active window) capture. The version of screenhunter I'm using, is the free version, not the purchased version. Maybe there is a difference, I don't know?

I don't need to use screenhunter on those diagrams, their GIF, I can do anything with those. Some databases use pdf files, they cause me some problems, because some sites don't allow pdf files to be uploaded, I'm learning.

As far as editing files, If I can find a cropping tool, I can do some editing. If there is no cropping tool, I'm lost as far as editing. I am still doing searches on editing and playing with everything. thanksI'm not sure why you posted that link since it's not a PDF document, so it seems unrelated to your topic, "uploading pdf file to internet". And, I have yet to see a PDF on autozone.com. I believe all their installation guides are HTML, i.e. web pages.

Besides, you should not be trying to use graphics from autozone.com without their permission. It's a violation of copyright. See http://www.autozone.com/termsConditions/rulesAndRegs.htmThanks for the headsup, I didn't realize that was copywrited info. I was trying to list a public site where anybody with a computer could go and look at wiring diagrams. I realized those diagrams weren't pdf, I was trying to make the point, that using screenhunter with the rectangular capture won't work on those diagrams. That rectangular capture won't work on pdf files either. At least, I couldn't get it to work.

Some of the databases I go to are pdf files and the info is copywrited, password protected, that's why I didn't post the site. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if the database with the pdf files is copywrited material, I don't remember seeing a disclaimer. I guess I'll have to look. It's an ebscohost database, most large libraries carry this automotive database, If you live in the same county as the library that carries this database, I believe you can access this database from your home computer for free. If you live outside the county, you can still gain access to the database by paying a small yearly fee.

I have seen some copywrite information that says, as long as you don't make a profit from using their information, they don't care. From what I have read of the autozone copywrite, you are correct. thanks for all your helpThanks for the reply, I didn't notice your post earlier. I wasn't trying to be rude or anything, I'm an amatuer at this stuff.

My kids showed me everything I know about computers, how to turn it on and off, surf in between. My kids are all growed and moved on, for me to learn this new stuff, is like trying to learn a foreign language. For an old dog, I can still hunt, I just don't pick things up quite as fast.

I read all your posts, I tried everything that you suggested, using the rectangular capture, the image in the box is not focused, the diagram itself is clear and easy to read.

I listed the link for the autozone site, that has wiring diagrams, it was just the easiest site I knew of, to look at wiring diagrams. Soybean told me according that sites copywrite info, it's illegal to make a copy of any of their info, I don't know what to tell you about that. Those are not pdf files, they are gif, but using the screenhunter with (rectangular area) capture on either type file, the result is the same. The VIEW in the small box is not focused. If I go ahead and click capture and bring up the capture screen, the screen is blank. I guess, I'm doing something wrong, just don't know what.

So far, I've MADE alot of posts, taken-up alot of space, given alot of info, that you folks probably didn't want or need. Done one or two things that I guess was illegal, that I didn't realize. Maybe I better STOP. thanks for your help.you can post those diagrams on your website if you don't make money for it and you give credit that it is autozone's diagrams you're taking and you have link to the original.

I'd not be worried about that. Thanks for the reply. Talking about screenhunter, I'm using the free version. I did notice on the jpeg setting, there was a quality control setting, numbered 1-100, it is set on 90. On the free version, that is not an active control, I can't change it. Maybe that's why I can't capture anything using the rectangular capture. The active window capture will work. It was fun to play with. I've been playing with the prtscm key also, it's all interesting.

mcxeb52!, Soybean, kpac and everybody has given me a lot of info. thanksno problem You might compare gadwin printscreen also if you want. I personally haven't used it but my dad says he uses it and likes it.

Solve : WKT file?

Answer»

I've tried opening a WKT file with Adobe Reader and WORD to no avail. Word will open it but ENCRYPTED. I know it's an encrypted file because it's my own personal document that I EXPORTED from its main site in the WEB. Does ANYONE know how can I open this file, what program would I use to decrypt it and read it normally?

I exported it because I want to make changes constantly and don't want to be going in and out to the site every time I need to do so. Later on I can import it back to the site.

Thanks. What was it encrypted with ? ?

Solve : Everytime I try to play a video file, Errors occur, and Media Players shut off?

Answer»

Hmm...for some unknown reason, the CORE TEMP IS GRAYED OUT AND SAYS N/A

Help... OK. Let's try something else.
Get VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/, and see, if you can play videos.Ok, any of the videos WORK when I play them in VLC. Thank you for that.

HOWEVER

They DO NOT WORK IN ANY OTHER MEDIA PLAYER (such as Media Player Classic or Windows Media Player). There's always an ERROR message!

And when I open any files in any WINDOWS EXPLORER FILE, the computer always goes haywire, and there's always a message saying that "Windows Explorer has experienced an error and needs to shut down" etc, etc.

HOWEVER,

When I open any video file (ON VLC) ON THE DESKTOP, there is no problem!

*censored* is happened to my computer??? As for Windows players, it looks like you have some codecs missing.
Get this: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm

As for Windows Explorer error, go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy. But I don't have any Windows CD's

What do I do?You can BORROW one.
Sooner, or later everyone needs Windows CD.OK, I've done the whole "sfc /scannow".

The whole "please wait while Windows checks" etc, etc, has been finished. It's taken nearly 1.5 hours. BUT NOTHING'S HAPPENED. It just finished! I waited so long for NOTHING???

But on the other hand, there are no more errors whenever I play videos on WMP or Media Player Classic. Thanks to your RECOMMENDATION of downloading that codec thingy.

But whenever I click on a video file, there's this pop up asking whether or not I want to use ffdshow or something like that...Quote

there's this pop up asking whether or not I want to use ffdshow or something like that...

Solve : Trouble! Please help! My monitor is blank and black.?

Answer»

This is what I did:
"""Removing Old ATI Software
Click on Start, then Control Panel, then go to Add/Remove Programs.
At the top of the list you should see several ATI entries. Select the entry entitled ATI Software Uninstall Utility, and click Change/Remove.
You will be PROMPTED to restart your system once the uninstall is complete.
Once restarted, check the Add/Remove Programs list again for any remaining ATI software.
If any ATI software is still listed, click Change/Remove on those entries to uninstall each one individually.
Next, please SCROLL through the list until you find an entry called DAO (see screenshot below).
Select DAO, then Click Change/Remove to uninstall this program.
If you do not have the ATI Software Uninstall Utility listed in the add or remove programs list, you can simply uninstall each listed ATI component by clicking on it, then clicking on the Change/Remove button. """

And then I installed the RadeonX300 and attempted to run it, but it now told me that I need to install Directx8 first.

Everest says you have directx9.0c installed, re run Everest & check it.
Use msconfig to confirm this.

When you downloaded the X300 drivers what type of file did you get, was it an exe file?FieldValue

I did get an exe file when I downloaded the x300 drivers.By the way, I downloaded the Catalyst Drivers from the Radeon site. Were those the ones I needed to download?Yes Catalyst drivers sound like the right ones, did you download
8-7_xp32_dd_65993.exe to your computer then double click on it?Yes I downloaded the catalyst drivers and double clicked on it. I also "ran" it and I got the same error message that I needed Directx 8 installed.

I don't believe you can remove or even roll back directx but it wouldn't hurt to reinstall directx9.0c. Did msconfig report it as 9.0c too?
Do you have any of the original software for that computer, perhaps that will be of some use.unfortunately I dont have any of the original software for this computer. Where in msconfig do I check to see if it reports it as 9.0c too?Does anyone know if i can install any other drivers besides Radeon x300 to correct this? The x300 requires that I have Directx 8 installed and I can't find it anywhere!Oops, I meant to say dxdiag, sorry about that.
I think dxdiag will report the same as Everest.
You could TRY contacting Dell and Radeon, maybe they can help.

Solve : Remote Desktop not working, XP Pro SP3?

Answer»

I just built a media center computer for my new apartment, and I want to control it via Remote Desktop to perform administrative tasks as needed. Since I am not sure if I will stay with a Windows based, or switch to Linux I have not activated this copy of Windows, but that should not matter.

When I open the RD connection windows on the CLIENT (Vista SP1), I put in the correct information, hit connect, all the buttons except for Cancel get grayed out, it waits about 10 seconds, then all the buttons are clickable again. No error message or anything, it just doesn't work. Any time fromt hen on that I click connect, it does not wait the 10 seconds. This client can access Remote Desktop on my server no problem though.

Here are a few things I have tried:

-----Using the IP instead of the Hostname on the client

-----Using a different client

-----Disabling the Firewall

-----Selected "Always connect, even if authentication fails" on the Remote Desktop client

-----MADE sure Remote Desktop is enabled on the server (server = the one needed to be controlled)

-----Unchecked and rechecked the box for Remote Desktop in System Properties

-----Made sure the user is set to allow Remote Desktop connections on the server

----- Used the "netstat -an |find "3389"" command which returned the following:
TCP 0.0.0.0:3389 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

-----Used Microsoft's "PortQryUI" to test the port, it RETURNS the (correct) status as:
"TCP port 3389 (ms-wbt-server service): LISTENING
portqry.exe -n 192.168.1.164 -e 3389 -p TCP exits with return code 0x00000000."

-----I enabled CredSSP as detailed in this Microsoft KB article

-----My roommate found another site which described problems with Remote Desktop and XP SP3, he got a different version of a DLL and a registry edit (No idea what site that was, I'd have to ask him, and he is gone for a few days)

So....with all of that tried, I and my roommate are out of ideas. Why can't I Remote Desktop into this machine?Quote

I have not activated this copy of Windows, but that should not matter.

This may in fact be the issue...That is what my roommate considered as well, but I can't find anything online saying you have to activate for Remote Desktop to work. Also, that would make no sense at all, why would Remote Desktop not work until activated? What is the point of that? All that would do is make an systems administrators job more of a pain in the a*s. Have you seen this issue before? Can you find anywhere that says activation is the problem?Because Bill Gates is a control FREAK perhaps ? ?
Why not activate ? ?Quote from: patio on July 27, 2008, 10:20:04 AM

Solve : registry problems??

Answer»

This is probably an older computer because I' ve been out of the mix for awhile as to computing anyways. I have recently INSTALLED windows xp on a freshly formated c drive. When this computer begins it kicks open the main cd rom drive. You can push it closed and the lights blink and then it opens right back up. any idear? Also I have been reinstalling the old programs and was putting word on and trying to get thesaurus working it keeps telling me windows cant open mssth3am.lex file. After a lil investigation everything on this world wide web is trying to tell me its a registry problem. The old system on here was all bootlegged and im wondering if something is still out of whack possibly? Any help on this probably easy issue for all of you? That CD drive opening happened to me, when the drive was about to die.

Are you sure about spelling: mssth3am.lex?

Is CD drive made by Matsushita?Error 1305 reading from file
E:\PFiles\COMMON\MSSHARED\PROOF\MSTH3AM.LEX\ COMPAQ 140S CD ROM That's different spelling, and yes it's part of MS Office.
After Windows reinstall, did you get all Windows/Office updates.
I can see in Google, there was some Office update addressing MSTH3AM.LEX file.
What Office version?
What Windows version?WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL

OFFICE 2000 UPDATED OFFICE 2000-SR1 PREMIUM Try Office repair. The problem with your CD drive is very LIKELY a power supply problem. If there is some AC on the DC lines or the DC isn't stable or low it can give you problems like you're describing. If you have a multimeter you can test the 5 VDC and other lines and see if they are stable or low. You can also put the meter on AC and see if there is any AC voltage on the DC lines.

You can get a cheapo multimeter for around $ 10. Auto parts stores sell them and RadioShack or the internet.

A bad power supply could cause problems all over the place so it WOULD be good to check it. Even if it checks out OK if you have a multimeter you'd be prepared to check it in the future. None of the voltages that a computer power supply puts out will hurt you. There's 5 volts DC + and -. 12 volts DC + and - and 3.3 volts DC typically. You can put the negative lead to the frame and use the connector that goes into the back of your CD-ROM drive to check for the voltages. A multimeter may not be able to see an irregularity in the voltage that is causing some problem though. An oscilloscope could but I wouldn't recommend that you go out and get an oscilloscope.

They make computer power supply testers

http://www.911forpcs.com/atxposutefrs1.html

And if you need a new power supply for your computer the best deals are on the internet. The same site has quite a selection and very good deals.
http://www.911forpcs.com/powersuppliesb.html

But then maybe your power supply is doing just great. The DOOR opening and closing like you describe sounds like a typical power supply problem though.

Solve : End Program Message During XP Home Shut down?

Answer»

When I shut down XP Home, I get a End Program cc Svc Hst message. Until I select End, the dialogue box REMAINS open, and Windows will not shut down. How can I get rid of this message?Hold the power button? That looks LIKE a Norton file I think - I have at times had this show up - sometimes it'll end for itself, others it needs my input to end. Right now my shutdown has been 'clean' but I'd not be surprised to see it happen again. Another culprit I have had in past was '.NET' COMING up this way.

I regard it as mainly an irritation and in fact on LAST computer I USED to often get a Zone Alarm file do it too .... and never found a fix so - just lived with it.Quote

Solve : My Computer won't load past the splash screen after XP SP3 Install?

Answer»

Hey there guys,

SORRY I've not posted anything since my last query... I hope that someone might forgive me and help me out with this one; otherwise I'm really up the creek.

Its been a few weeks now since I started installing XP SP3 on my machines. It worked fine on my brother's DELL machine and it worked fine on my super old XP machine (Now, sadly, arguably the best machine I own). But after following the usual "please restart" instructions my main rig now completely refuses to boot past the mobo splash screen and has been reduced to a paper-weight.

I cannot get into the BIOS screen or boot from a CD nor see any error messages; just the splash screen (a snake \ flame pic if you must know). It responds to no button presses nor does it make any particular beeps that would be helpful.

My System Specs FOLLOW (to the best of my knowledge).

OS - XP (SP3!!)
Motherboard - ECS Elitegroup RS482-M
Graphics- Onboard ATI RADEON XPRESS 200

And other than the superficial size of my RAM and HDD I can't remember the details of the individial devices within the system.

Is there anything I can do, except for using it to hold open my door? I'm guessing theres something in the boot.ini or registry that I can change but all my searches thus far have turned up no results and I'm at a loss and don't want to boot it up as a secondary drive without knowing what to look for.

Many thanks for any help,

Duncdid you try BOOTING in safe mode ? then uninstalling the sp3 ?
You can't get past the BIOS POST screen? Wow. Doesnt sound like its an XP problem then. What you can try to do is reset your BIOS settings to factory defaults. Now there is a jumper on the motherboard for this, but if you're not sure exactly which one it is, or it is hard to get to (you might just BREAK something trying to get to it!) then take out the CMOS battery for 20 minutes, with everything unplugged from the tower. Put it BACK in and try it out, saved many systems that seemed unworkable this way. Dont know what a CMOS battery is? do a search on google images.

Solve : Battery Help?

Answer»

I've had my current laptop battery for about 3 years. Now, I can't take the computer off the AC adapter without the computer saying the battery was low and then shutting down a few minutes later. I bought a new battery. I got it in the mail yesterday, put the new battery in and plugged the computer into the AC adapter to charge overnight. When I woke up this morning, I UNPLUGGED the AC adapter and the computer shut down. What's going on?? What's wrong?? I have the same problem with one of my experiential laptops. I think it MAY be a hardware problem.

What model is your Laptop? What laptop mfg and model do you have? Did you buy an oem battery or a third party?

Unless there is a re-calibration scheme required for your laptop, the suspects, of course, are the new battery or the power adapter. Power adapter works to power the laptop, therefore, I would assume that you got a bad battery; assuming that there is no procedure to follow to replace the battery. No help to you but - my rather ancient HP laptop (Pavilion xl328), which I bought used - had a pretty ''tired'' battery so at vast expense bought a new one.

Was not overjoyed when I found that the improvement was way less than stellar. I had EXPECTED something like a 2 hour session on battery but it seems to still be very poor. Maybe not quite as bad as yours but far from impressive.

Odd tho, as I have seen numerous instances of folks on air flights using a laptop for absolutely ages - obviously on battery.Quote

Odd tho, as I have seen numerous instances of folks on air flights using a laptop for absolutely ages - obviously on battery.
You can plug them in on the plane. As for the lifetime of a battery, it depends on what you are doing on the computer. For example, MS WORD takes up less processing power than a Game like Crysis so it would use less power. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite M55-S139. I'm assuming the battery is a third party because it is not a Toshiba brand battery. Would a suggestion be to return the battery or is there another way I can check to make sure it's not another issue? Also, what is a re-calibration scheme? How would I perform that?Quote
I unplugged the AC adapter and the computer shut down.
If it just shut down right when you unplugged it but, with the old battery inside it stays on for a while, it would be a fault with the new battery.

Quote
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite M55-S139. I'm assuming the battery is a third party because it is not a Toshiba brand battery.
If the laptop is Toshiba but the battery isn't, that would probably be your problem.Have they changed the way the batteries work? With my laptops you need to discharge and Recharge them before using them or when they have problems holding a charge.Li-ion batteries are used now and they don't suffer the "memory effect" of NiMH and Ni-Cad batteries. Discharging and fully charging has no effect on a Li-ion battery; likewise, you can charge a Li-ion battery at ay level without suffering from reduced capacity.Quote from: drmsucks on August 02, 2008, 12:12:43 AM

Well, not on the battery itself, but most of them have some circuitry that keeps track of the power level. the batteries still lose charge over time, so if you store a battery at 100% for a few years, and you retrieve it, it might actually have 80%(probably less) charge, but the circuitry still thinks it's 100%. Only way to really fix that is a discharge-recharge CYCLE, unless the circuitry is self-correcting...

Also, that explains why only my thinkpad provides a discharge/recharge option. strangely the laptop reboots wheneber I try to do it, but it's there, and my Toshiba (which useda lithium ion) didn't have any such options. Still suffered strange symptoms, like not charging past 86% (which I forced it to by constantly removing the battery and replacing it until the charging light went off, and repeating...)Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 02, 2008, 09:01:24 AM

Well, not on the battery itself,
Yeah, the battery itself is what I was talking about. Re-calibrating the "power meter" is a separate issue.

Li-ion batteries have a self-monitoring circuit - I don't know why the laptop manufacturers can't tie-in to that and get an exact readout of remaining capacity instead of the highly inaccurate (imo) 'battery' meters used.

Wonder how the OP made out?

Many thanks............Sunagor What did you do b efore this problem? (hardware, software, installs, downloads, ect...)lol yeah ok

IF you can get to your desktop at all before this error comes up, try this:

Get a copy of the latest driver for your video card, or use what you already have if it is the latest. Uninstall your existing driver installation and REBOOT. Run the latest driver installation. If its a software problem with the existing driver installation you should be fine. Hi Carbon and Win

I just love the internet........people are so generous the thier time.

Thanks guys for your replys.

Carbon.... I can't think what I have done that might have caused this.It happened a couple of months AGO and I am doing this on my lap top.I did try all the available restore points.Do you think if I uninstalled all the programs ONE by one it might help ?

Win.....sorry about this but I'm a complete idgit regarding all this. Would you be kind enough to explain in more detail your solution.Where and how would I get the latest driver ? and how do I uninstall my existing driver installation ?

Many thanks................SunagorWith the internet, I found this:

Since this first happened I have now gone wireless and successfully run two laptops. However when I disconnect the router to plug in in the modem I cant get on line in the safe mode on my PC. Should the light for the usb and the asdl be on ?.At the moment it is only the usb light. How do I get the asdl light to come on and hence allow me to go online ?

Download the driver file on another computer, put it on a DISK or memry stick and load it on your disfunctional computer. Remove your old driver as described in the link and install the new one. That should work. That sounds great SuperDave.............I'll give it a whirl and get back to you

Thank you thank you thank you soybean. You don't know how many people I have asked. When I did as you suggested I found that nothing was selected as a default web browser.

It all works now!!!!!!!

THANK YOU Soybean's the Man.

Solve : Can I get a free MalwareBytes??

Answer»

I am sure I tried to get a free Malwaqrebytes, but for some reason it keeps telling me my trial has expired.
What trial?
I am sure it said free. What did I miss? I am sure it used to be free. It's just a nag screen they have gone to...the trial continues updating and WORKING NORMALLY...Awhile back, Malwarebytes switched from having the free and paid versions be separate. They now have you install a "trial" (30-day?) version of their paid software that expires at the end of the trial and reverts to the free version. I just INSTALLED Malwarebytes on my sister's laptop the other day, I can't remember where it was but there was an option buried in the PROGRAM settings to exit the trial and revert to the free version. I wanted to do that in order to prevent a phone call a month from now asking what to do because her Malwarebytes trial expired! Also, no nagging.See Here...Thanks for sharing the fix to get rid of the nag, I have been just blowing it off when it nags by exiting out of the pop up. Cool to see a work around to get rid of the nag for now.BTW they have also bought out ADWCleaner which is also an excellent product....
WORKS great. Thanks Patio. There is a checkbox during install along the lines of "Enable Trial of Malwarebytes Pro" or something to that effect. I always disable it.

Solve : Vista will not allow me to install Windows XP! Why? HELP! BB is watching!?

Answer»

Hi all...

My post on the software forum lead me to try to install XP Pro on my new laptop, deleting Vista and changing the partitions slightly.

Upon inserting the XP disk... Vista warnings come up and tell me, "Sorry! The version you are trying to install is older than your current version! Check the Web for solutions!"

Upon connecting to the web, windows tells me, of course, that no solutions are available.

So... I need to wipe this %$^% off my drive! It annoys me! Vista has four or five stages for every thing you want to do... XP has one. YES or NO. Simple!

How do I CLEAR an entire drive in DOS and create partitions?? I'm HOPING there is a link I can go to for instructions? I really want to start afresh with a clean laptop, as there is so much crap on the new laptop I do not want. 61 processes were running at first log on!

Are you booting from the Windows XP CD?Yes, well trying to.

Is this the way to go?

It should be as simple as booting from the CD and formatting the disk. (you will loose all current files)Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 01, 2008, 08:39:15 AM

Yes, well trying to.

Something doesn't add up here. If you are booting from the CD, having set the BIOS accordingly, you would not be getting Vista warning messages. You get those if you are running Vista, and try to run the CD from that OS (which won't WORK, because Vista won't let you do a 'downgrade' as you have found.)

Ah, Ok. I entered BIOS and changed BOOT LOCATION to cd. NOW it's working...

But new problem... I get an error message once it starts to load XP... is this a BIOS setup issue?

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure your hard disk drives are POWERED on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related configuration is correct.

Setup cannot continue."

No need to double Post...

Solve : Problems with install?

Answer»

I am reinstalling XP, the last resort to GET rid of a virus. Just before I decided to reinstall I used MSCONFIG to enable booting into safe mode. Now after starting the reinstall process, the pc reboots and still boots into safe mode. Setup can't continue in safe mode so it restarts. I am CAUGHT in a loop. I need a way to disable windows REBOOTING into safe mode so that setup can continue. I tried fixboot and FIXMBR from the recovery console. It is ntfs so I can't use a floppy to rewrite boot.ini. Is there a command line I can use to force booting into normal mode, or some other method that will work? Thanks.Did you remove the old partition and re-create it in the setup process ? ?
