Solve : XP professonal vs XP home? |
Answer» I recently did a clean install of XP Professional onto my laptop COMPUTER. It runs slow and I wondered if Pro takes up a lot more space then the Home edition? Can I install the Home edition without having to totally wipe the drive clean and start over (losing everything I have already set up)?No. Quote from: SuzanG on November 05, 2011, 06:53:03 AM Would that make my computer run faster? No. Quote from: SuzanG on November 05, 2011, 06:53:03 AM Computer is older and does not have alot of memory or a fast processor. Can you provide some details on the hardware specs? What processor does your computer have? How much RAM? What size hard drive? And, if you can, does it use onboard/integrated video or does it have an add-on video card? Did this laptop originally come with Windows XP? Did you install Windows from a CD that came with the computer or was this edition of Windows one you bought separately from the computer? Have looked in Device Manager to see whether any yellow triangles with an exclamation mark appear there? When you installed Windows, did you also install certain device drivers? Processor is 1.40 Ghz Celeron Ram is 480 mb HD 37 Gb NTFS I do not know if onboard or integrated All hardware in device manager are fine came with XP Home and I upgraded to XP Pro originally This install was complete with total format of DISK first-XP Pro SP2 Any advise on making it run faster would be appreciated. Setting it up to give to granddaughter. This is a computer you've used for quite some TIME, right? When you say "slow", do you mean it's slower after reinstalling Windows than it was before you reinstalled Windows? Can you quantify the slowness in some way? For example, is it slow starting up? How long does it take? Do programs (Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer, etc.) take longer to launch than they did before this re-installation of Windows? What make and model is it? I have used it occassionally for a long time-since new in 2005. It is slow when it starts up and when opening programs-pretty much all programs it seems. Not sure if it is slower then before but thought by reinstalling and starting over completely, it would be faster with these two things. Any suggestions? I have defragmented the disk and run cleaners etc.Did you install up-to-date drivers from the manufacturer for the various components?Well, a few options for improving performance come to mind but two of them involve some cost, so I'm not sure you want to spend money on it. Those two options are adding RAM if the computer can accommodate more RAM, and replacing the hard drive with a faster, higher-capacity, one. Without knowing the make and model of the computer, we can not tell whether your computer can unitize more RAM. The other option which involves no cost is increasing the amount of RAM designated for the video function of the computer. As it stands now, I believe 32MB of the RAM is designated/allocated/shared for video/screen display. I DERIVED the 32MB figure by subtracting the 480MB figure in your first post from the amount of physically installed in your computer, which if probably 512MB. If the computer will allow increasing video RAM to 64MB, that may improve performance, at least for some tasks. For a discussion about doing this, see How to increase my video RAM? If your computer can handle 1GB of RAM, that would probably yield noticeable improvement. Again, we need the make and model. Note: I'm also still wondering about this: Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 05, 2011, 01:15:08 PM Did you install up-to-date drivers from the manufacturer for the various components?Oops, I knew I was forgetting something. It is an HP Pavilion ze4900. Yes, I did update all the drivers. Will try your suggestion regarding video RAM. Thank you. By their very nature, laptops are less powerful than a proper desktop computer. Maxing out the RAM, (take the scan at www.crucial.com, to see what you have and what you can install and how much it will cost. Heck, if you want to buy the best ram available, you can order it right there. I do this all the time for my customers.) Then, due to the slower CPU (a Celeron is the very bottom of the heap, in CPU's) you will need to seriously limit the number of TSR's and Services that run in the background. You need to shut down absolutely everything that's not required to run Windows. I do all this for my laptop customers all the time and I can usually double the efficiency of most laptops. But it takes more tweaking and tuning than I'm prepared to tell here. But start with the ram. That's critical to windows running right. Good Luck, |

Solve : I need genuine software but impossible here!? |
Answer» Hi moderator! from which source may I avail gratis software but authenticated one? Possibly you can contact the computer manufacturer for a "recovery DISK" . Otherwise you must pay for a legal copy of Windows or use a free OS e.g. Linux. Hi Salmon! Thanks a lot giving advice. Your mentoring is to the point but I still HESITATED to change the operating system(os). Now a day, I can't d.load the Adobe for unknown reason! I am an avid learner so that I am searching the solution when I reach this nice 'forum' it is sure I can solve the problem very soon. Would you pls. show me how to make link with my wordpress webpage with another webpage? -as this link is showing me black only -no blue color! If you right click on the address then it comes the new windows open or other etc- right now. Take the computer into a reputable computer SERVICE store and acquaint them with your problem and seek their assistance in getting a legal version of your operating system installed on the computer. truenorthFrom what I read, I understood that you were scammed twice. Ehm, are you sure you got two counterfeit copies of Windows? Did Windows ask for for an activation? And LAST but not least, is there any Microsoft Windows sticker on your computer? |

Solve : Input boxes (including password logon) filled with slashes? |
Answer» This started with my password box being pre-filled. It TOOK a long time to keep clicking "enter" and trying delete and backspace keys before I would get the "did you forget your password" notice. Then I was able to enter my password. It got progressively worse as even the search boxes on Firefox and IE were filled in by forward slashes. Then my separate e-mail client inherited the problem. |

Solve : Favorites Export/Merge? |
Answer» Hi Everybody I have two lap top computers I do not want them on a network. On each computer I have Favorites some are duplicated and over time I havel PLACE a site the one computer I am working on, but meaning to put it also on the other, however I have never have gotten around to it. I was wondering – is there a way I can export both of the Favorites into one file without duplications? I have gotten suggestions from “so called experts” to use a flash drive, export all to two separate files in word then merge them together, plus other IDEAS. Any suggestions, ideas, instructions etc would be appreciated Thank You I don't know of a way to merge them. And, I think the advice to use Word makes no sense. Did they EXPLAIN exactly HOW that would be done? I have two suggestions regarding Favorites. 1) Use Delicious.com. It allows you to save your Favorites on the web and ACCESS them from any computer. 2) Use the Opera browser on both computers and ENABLE it's Link feature, which synchronizes Bookmarks between computers. Or Firefox Sync (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_Sync) also: http://mashable.com/2007/09/20/sync-bookmarks/ |

Solve : ATI update problem? |
Answer» I installed this update thinking it would help my graphics minor problem and it does cause Firefox to work faster and in some instances BETTER but there several agrivations with it. Occational freezes of screenWhat you have here is a Dell 4700 computer with an integrated video chip added a ATI Radeon X300 card. Is this related to your thread or to any activities aside from gaming. The power supply requirement needed or necessary for any upgrades or any thermal events could be your problem. Compare this for your onboard video to the Radeon card and see what comes up. RAM module could also contribute to the freezing problem.Quote from: jason2074 on November 05, 2011, 01:55:28 AM What you have here is a Dell 4700 computer with an integrated video chip added a ATI Radeon X300 card. Yes the window is wavy and choppy when draging across Monitor screen, not restricted to gaming at all. Quote from: pattybrew on November 04, 2011, 08:28:19 PM I installed this update thinking it would help my graphics minor problem and it does cause Firefox to work faster and in some instances better but there several agrivations with it.Quote from: jason2074 on November 05, 2011, 01:55:28 AM What you have here is a Dell 4700 computer with an integrated video chip added a ATI Radeon X300 card. Compare this for your onboard video to the Radeon card and see what comes up. RAM module could also contribute to the freezing problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled the ATI software and did not improve performance so I uninstalled it completely but kept the codecs Now where do I go from here? I thought the Radeon X300 was the onboard graphics. Will my machine be harmed if I just uninstall all the ATI items? When I reinstalled the OS last year I thought the ATI was part of it but it was not. I had really get it back to it's factory condition. Now how do I do that?Download speccy http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download/standard After the file finishes downloading, double click on it to start the installation. Follow the prompts until the installation is complete. Once you've finished installing, start the program. At the top of the page go to File > Publish Snapshot. You will be asked if you wish to proceed. Click Yes, then Copy to clipboard. Now right click on any empty SPACE in your reply box and click Paste.Hi JJ. Prior to checking back here I went to Hardware and Radeon X300 Properties and did a driver rollback which installed a Microsoft driver. For now that is working just fine. I did check Add/Remove and found that there is still a file called ATI software uninstall utility that I uninstalled but kept the codecs. Is that why the program is still listed there? All I have seemed to find on older machines is that it is best to update the drivers but I have had more problems than I am comfortable with. I will add the info you recommended, but at a later date. I need a few days rest from all this for now. Thank you so much and have a wonderful weekend. Failed to add that there are 2x ati2evxx.exe processes running in Task Manager. Are these necessary?http://speccy.piriform.com/results/hh2DZ2S37ubY15jSCxo74Tm I will check back later to see if you have commented. Thank you so much. BTW the Radeon card is X300. When I did first update last year from Driver Max, this is what I got, a series. I think this is the problem when ADM or AMD downloaded the most recent driver./software last week.Never ever use DriverMax or any other driver finder app///they are crud. If you cannot locate a proper driver in future check here 1st.Go here http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Legacy/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.13&lang=English Scroll down to the bottom of the page. I would go with Option 1 - Full Software Suite, but you can choose either one. Download it and Save the file. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the ati driver you are using now. You will be prompted to restart. Once you've restarted you should see a message saying found new hardware. Close that found new hardware message or ignore it. Now find the new driver that you've downloaded, and double click it to start the installation. You will have to restart the computer when you're finished. That should have you cleared up . If you have any problems, let us know. Nice legwork there JJ... Thank you JJ. This is where I found the update but I think I did not fully remove the old prior to installing the new update. This time I removed all the software, driver and I had Parental Control which I do not know if it did anything or not. I downloaded the option 1 but think I will try the onboard for a while just to see if I am satisfied with it before installing the ATI. Thank you so much. I hope this will be satisfactory with me. By removing the DriverMax, TweakUIPowerpack2011 and a couple of other software I have brought my free harddrive space from 31% to 34%, reduced the processes running and CPU is way down. Now is it necessary to have Windows media player, real player and Quick Time? Are there video that use only specific players or converted to whatever player is on machine? I like this house cleaning ???Hmm I was not expecting what happened when I tried to print an article. I highlited what I wanted to print and went thru process that I have every day, chose selected and size etc then when preview showed it was the whole subject, 2 pages of it. Not just what I selected. Is this the absence of the ATI driver causing this? When ckg hardware devices I found that the Primary Display Adapter is gone which is the one I removed because instead of Radeon X300 Primary it read Radeon X300, X600, X1050 Primary, I may have not gotten all the # correctly but it should read Radeon X300 Primary , Which is what I had hoped the new hardware detected would be. So, in ckg further I found 2 System Boards, one located in Intel Interface Controller and the other on Microsoft ADPI-Compliant System. I don't recall seeing this before As I am looking at them side by side I see that they are in different locations. So this is what should be, am I correct? As I need to print this right away I SUPPOSE I should install the ATI. Which saddens me. I love the low CPU usage. Machine is soooo quiet. |

Solve : Soft Agent Controls & Soft Assisted Service? |
Answer» I found these in my machine. Are they necessary and, in layman terms, what do they do? In JUNE 2009, SupportSoft products became part of the Consona CRM family of software solutions Quote Sprtsvc.exe also known as SupportSoft Agent Service is an automated support program for SupportSoft products such as Sprocket Service. It is usually installed as a separate entity and automatically launches at computer startup. It is not a considered an essential program and can be removed without damaging any system resources. Because it uses system resources and CPU memory with no immediate benefit, you can uninstall it and remove it from startup to prevent it from running. How to Remove Sprtsvc EXE http://www.ehow.com/how_5166416_remove-sprtsvc-exe.html Too many gee-whiz no-benefit packages installed IMHO. For a start, any program that "defrags" your registry is snake oil. That iobot thing too, and Tweaknow Powerpack too. QuoteI found out that they are not running in Task Manager and are not in Add/Remove. They are not harming my computer so I will leave them there. IE8 is running better after I did a little more cleaning after posting this.Your missing the point... Get rid of them...Quote from: PATIO on October 29, 2011, 07:37:19 PM Your missing the point... I agree with Patio.I did a full uninstall of the IObit product using Revo Uninstaller and the Soft Agent Controls and Soft Assisted Service are removed also. Thanks for your advice. So things are better i assume ? ? Here's a good protection package that has been flawless for me for a long while... Anti = Virus: MSE Avast AVG NOTE select only one of the above and keep the 1 you like the best... Then add the following: MalwareBytes =Anti Malware SuperAnti-Spyware WinPatrol... After you decide which A/V you like get rid of the others... Keep MBAM and SAS... WinPatrol runs in the background,,,however with any of these apps do NOT run more than 1 scan at a time... Now it will be up to you to grab updates and run the scans on a regular basis... Best of Luck to you...I actually have not seen any difference. I have used the IObit ASC for around 2 years and loved it as I could do everything with just 1 click. I have noticed that CCleaner does almost the same tasks. I am happy with it. I will uninstall the TweakPowerPack 2011. And keep the TweakUI Powertoy. Thank you so much. Right now my biggest problem is the Graphics ATI update. I think it was a BIG mistake. I posted it in another post. Thank you for all your help. My goal is to reduce the amount of memory used and Processes that are running in Task Manager, ALTHOUGH everything I try adds more processes. One example is the search indexer after updating to Windows Search 4. I uninstalled WSearch 4 but realized very quickly that I had no search that I could detect. Have reinstalled it and now not only is the searchindexer.exe running but WindowsSearch.exe also. I am beginning to think that I am tackling a lost cause. I also wanted to update the drivers but everytime I run a check I am told that all the dirvers are updated. They are 2002, 2002 and 2004. All very old. Even Dell says they are the newest one for machine. If I could afford a new computer I would go that route but that is not possible. Thank you so much for your help.Quote from: patio on November 04, 2011, 09:09:12 PM So things are better i assume ? ?Quote from: patio on November 04, 2011, 09:09:12 PM So things are better i assume ? ? Yes, I have been using Avast for over a year now. It does a very good job for me. Any that I suspect any malware/problem I do run MAMB. Thank you.Quote Causes problem when playing games in Webkinz.Searching on those previous problem have made a lot of hits on google. A number has been on connection with the site itself, cache, infections or flash player problem. Also, the high CPU process is also discussed. I cannot consider it as an intermittent problem. Its most likely users have a unique case on the site itself. Have you tried directing the question to their support site, if any? Found this also http://en.forum.laptop.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=150514Thank you Jason. I do not have a Laptop. Dell Dimension 4700 is my desktop machine. Yes, I mean the site is not about laptops, just the thread and suggestions given on webkinz.Oh cool. I will take a look at it. I did some MJR house cleaning and removed the new graphics ATI suite that I had installed a few days ago. I am still not happy with the actions of my graphics. It still seems unstable but Windows is happy, LOL I have a thread posted on need help for the 'Ati driver update'. I hope someone can help me with it. It is the correct one for my Radeon X300 so there has got to be a way for it to work better for me. Removes a few other software and have the memory down by 200 mb. Thanks again jason. WW: Webkinz World Checked out the site. Yes, Flash is a must to keep updated and Java or WW will not work. FF is a bear to deal with when a new ver of Flash is installed as is each new ver of FF to work with WW. WW/ Ganz, techs have to adjust WW for use with the new versions. It has caused some headaches a lot. 2 yrs ago I was unable to load WW for the entire month of October. It took them that long to work on their end following a big WW update. |

Solve : Is this even possible (easily alternating between latin/cyrillic via USB)? |
Answer» Sorry for the lengthy title, I tried to describe the problem as accurately but it's kinda hard to do it in a compact manner. Anyway, here's what I'm wondering: I have a keyboard which has both, the cyrillic and the latin alphabet and then I have a regular latin keyboard which I'm using right now. I was wondering if it's possible to set up my XP so that when I plug in the USB keyboard (the one with both, cyrillic and latin letters on the keys), the computer automatically recognizes it and switches to cyrillic and when I unplug it, the computer returns to the latin alphabet? I've heard of this sort of thing at our university computers but I haven't gotten to snoop around the settings myself so I'm relying only on second-hand information with this. What with my computer SKILLS being PRETTY much granddad-level, I need some help with this. Is there any way to make switching back and forth between latin and cyrillic easy and quick? Or do I just need to do it the hard way every time? That'd be annoying since often I need to change languages within the same e-mail, for example. |

Solve : Problem with toshiba laptop!? |
Answer» HI! I'm new here, I'm sorry if I make some mistakes in posting or in English or in anything else. I have toshiba laptop which has 1.5 GB of RAM and 50 GB of HDD. Originally I had Windows XP installed on it. All of a sudden the laptop became slow and I couldn't turn it off (I could turn it off just if I press the button). So I tried to reinstall the windows with both Windows XP SP 2 and SP 3 discs and it would get stuck on INSTALLING NETWORK or something like that. Then I tried with Win 7 but it would show blue screen with some dll error. Once it even showed blue screen and message which was saying something like dumping physical memory... I can't REALLY remember now. Then I remembered to disable network settings in BIOS and then I succeeded in installing SP 2, but I had the same problem like before reinstallation, I couldn't turn it off, it was slow and in addition I couldn't access to SYSTEM in CONTROL PANEL and sometimes to DISPLAY SETTINGS. And also when I run a program or when I clicked on My DOCUMENTS or My computer it wouldn't show it in the taskbar. After all that I tried again but it wouldn't accept those same discs with SP 2 and SP 3. The screen was just black. Can someone help me? I know that maybe all this is confusing. I would RECOMMEND you to try checking your RAM first. You may use memtest86+, which comes for free. http://www.memtest.org/What model Toshiba laptop? And oh by the way welcome to the CH forums.truenorthToshiba satellite or something like that. It doesn't matter anymore. I solved the problem. The RAM stick of 1 GB was bad. And then when I took it out I installed windows 7 - 32 bits, I don't know how but I succeeded and laptop is not slow at all. EVERYTHING is working fine. Thank you.Wonderful, truenorth |

As to how it really works is a mystery to me.I beg to differ...it can't possibly "break" a link to the partition as it doesn't exist... Link is down... Although it would not touch the Recovery partition, the MBR code written specifically by the manufacturer will be OVERWRITTEN if the MBR gets fixed using fixmbr. Therefore, the shortcut keys Ctrl+F11 would cease to function, because the code in the MBR is not there to "call" the recovery process. That clarifies things... Thanx JAY.Quote from: DragonMaster Jay on October 28, 2011, 07:26:23 AM Although it would not touch the Recovery partition, the MBR code written specifically by the manufacturer will be overwritten if the MBR gets fixed using fixmbr. Must be careful about invoking fixmbr on certain computers.Even if that were to HAPPEN a Dell Recovery CD would solve the issue... Solve : DTV 1000 S TV Tuner card won't work? |
Answer» I am using Windows XP as my Operating system and have installed a Leadtek Winfast DTV 1000S TV capture card on my computer. The card was bought in australia and now I am based in India. The Winfast PVR has been installed properly but when I configure and hit the list of "countries" button India is not on the list. Most are all European countries with the exception of Taiwan. I would like to know if these capture cards are made region specific or can they be used in different regions of the world. I am unable to watch live Indian TV on my computer via the TV card although I have CONNECTED the card to a cable antenna. |

Solve : Need help burning photos to CD-R? |
Answer» I have NERO StartSmart installed on my computer and I have photos in My Pictures folder that I would LIKE to copy to CD-R's. I have a CD-RW drive but am unfamiliar with the Nero software. I need instructions on how to copy the photos to CD-R's using Nero. I am also unfamiliar with CD-R's. Can anyone tell me if I could use the same CD-R disc at a later time to add more photos to the disc until it is full? Or would I need to copy the photos all in ONE session, at one time? I've heard that once you add something to a CD-R disc, it cannot be erased. But does this mean you can't continue to add items too? I understand that Windows XP also helps copy photos to CD-R's. |

Solve : scroll bar problems? |
Answer» I have a Dell laptop, M1330 XPS. I am using Windows XP. I know all of these are antiques! For some reason, my vertical scroll bar just DEVELOPED a mind of it's own. Most of the TIME, it JUMPS up and down on it's own. At times, it just sticks on the bottom of whatever page I am viewing and refuses to move up. I have never seen this before. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong and how it can be fixed? I am not using a mouse, I am using a touch pad. |

Answer» I have WinXP with IE 7.0. Not sure if this is an OS or browser problem. My wife isn't sure what she did but the bottom TOOLBAR has changed. It still has a Start button on the left corner, but the date stamp and various icons are all squeezed into the left corner with nothing in between EXCEPT a BLANK blue field. How can I get my old toolbar back. Thanks.http://www.coolnerds.com/XP/Taskbar/xpTaskbar.htm |

Solve : My XP Computer won't boot.? |

Answer» I have a 2005 Dell Demension E510 Series running Win XP Media Edition. One day when I was vaccuming I knocked the POWER cord out of the wall. It's not the first time that has happened. So I plugged it in and turned it on. I let it get to the normal but weird "Missing Floppy Disk Drive" error message. I would always hit F1 to get past it. But now whenever I hit any key on the KEYBOARD, I hear a beep internally in the computer. It does not go past the "Missing Floppy" error screen. Havent been able to use since June 2011. I am stuck using my IMAC G3 from 2001. All I know how to do with the dell is open the tower up. I have no idea where anything is. I have been lately LOOKING in the BIOS but I have no idea what to do in there. Help would be very Appreciated.Quote from: Arvai on October 18, 2011, 03:07:17 PM I have a 2005 Dell Demension E510 Series...All I know how to do with the dell is open the tower up. Solve : BSOD only under certain circumstances? |
Answer» I am trying to diagnose a problem with random BSODs. The BSODs show different errors each time in different files, so I am suspecting a hardware problem. I have been having this problem for a while now (probably 4 months), but the BSODs would only happen like once every 2 weeks. They are starting to occur on a daily basis, so I am now determined to find the cause. I am currently doing a memtest (it's 80% complete with no errors). The strange thing I have noticed about these BSODs is that they only happen while flash player is on or I am recording with Camtasia. This made me suspect a problem with the graphics card, but I can play 3D games and do video benchmarks with no problem. Any ADVICE?Memtest complete. No errors.I suspect a flakey PSU if the Mem tested OK...Why PSU if it only happens with flash and camtasia? Those don't USE more power. Sorry, but your conclusion doesn't make sense to me.Oh well...Quote Oh well... ........So far, it seems to work in VGA (safe) mode. . .Quote from: Linux711 on October 16, 2011, 06:54:42 PM Why PSU if it only happens with flash and camtasia? Those don't use more power. Sorry, but your conclusion doesn't make sense to me. A flakey PSU is the NUMBER one suspect in cases like this. So far you've already "concluded" that it's not the graphics card. Personally your conclusion doesn't make sense, since last time I checked the graphics card capabilities that are used by recording software aren't the same ONES used by 3-D games. especially if you are running XP or not using Aero, in which case it could be an issue with the 2-D portion of the graphics driver. Flash specifically tries to use the 2-D hardware acceleration provided by most graphics drivers, too. (Even with desktop composition). Barring that, again, the PSU can cause any problem. It has nothing to do with it using more power, it has EVERYTHING to do with it not providing consistent power and kernel-mode race conditions involving hardware-level assumptions about the quality of the power the power supply gives when it is sending out PWR_GOOD.Quote So far you've already "concluded" that it's not the graphics card. Not really. It worked in safe mode, but when I went back to normal mode, it happened again. Quote an issue with the 2-D portion of the graphics driver. Flash specifically tries to use the 2-D hardware acceleration provided by most graphics drivers, too. (Even with desktop composition). I updated my drivers and the problem still occurs. I am thinking that it is an issue with the 2D acceleration of the card. Now I just have to find another graphics card to test in it. |
