Answer» Hello, I have the same problem as a lot of people, of an external drive on which I have STORED data from a precedent computer (like music etc), and then when moving it to another computer, I get "restricted access" messages. I know the procedure to take ownership of the folder and subfolders. It did work: the problem is, the authorizations themselves would not propagate, because for some reason each and EVERY of the subfolders have the "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects"...unchecked. All of them. So they are jut protected from inheritance. And ALTHOUGH you can propagate permissions if no subfolder is protected against that, I found no way, to propagate the inheritance behaviour itself! Or reset this behaviour by default: although some people told me about a magical "reset all ACL on child files and folders and allow inheritance by default" box, I never found it... Any help about that? I am on XP HOME edition, not professional, and I have downloaded some program to update windows so that the "security" tab shows up even in normal mode...this might explain some things... It TOOK a long time to keep clicking "enter" and trying delete and backspace keys before I would get the "did you forget your password" notice. Then I was able to enter my password. It got progressively worse as even the search boxes on Firefox and IE were filled in by forward slashes. Then my separate e-mail client inherited the problem. I run Zone Alarm, AVG free edition, Malwarebytes. None showed any viruses or malware. I ran CCCleaner and that didn't cure the problem. After reading the "how tos" on here, I used Spywareblaster which found one registry problem and removed it. I can now type in all input FIELDS (except for password LOGON) WITHOUT getting runaway slashes being entered. I also have a "Hijackthis" log file on this. A couple times when I rebooted, my network connections didn't show up until I rebooted again. Can you help?Tried another keyboard yet ? Wireless keyboard = new batteries ? Or is this a laptop ?I haven't tried another keyboard because it HAPPENS before I even start to type anything (logon password). This is a Micron desktop - not wireless. I was wondering if it's possible to set up my XP so that when I plug in the USB keyboard (the one with both, cyrillic and latin letters on the keys), the computer automatically recognizes it and switches to cyrillic and when I unplug it, the computer returns to the latin alphabet? I've heard of this sort of thing at our university computers but I haven't gotten to snoop around the settings myself so I'm relying only on second-hand information with this. What with my computer SKILLS being PRETTY much granddad-level, I need some help with this. Is there any way to make switching back and forth between latin and cyrillic easy and quick? Or do I just need to do it the hard way every time? That'd be annoying since often I need to change languages within the same e-mail, for example. I'm using Windows XP on my main comp but I also have an Asus Eee PC with some kind of a Windows 7 mini-edition (not the full version of Word, ads on the side panels ETC). I would really appreciate any advice with adapting the Asus for the occasional use of the same cyrillic/latin USB-keyboard as well or are the settings exactly the same for both PLATFORMS? Answer» Some friends asked me to look at their Computer which KEEPS telling them that Virtual memory is running low. This is what I found: 1) They have a 140 GB hard drive. Parttitoned into 2 parts. One part is 40 gb and the other is 100GB. 2 ) The 40 GB portion has about 30 GB used and of course 10 gb is free. 3) Almost all of the 100GB portion is free. 4) They have 1GB of Ram but almost all of it is used up. They prpobably have lots of apps open. 5) This leads me to believe that becuase most of the ram is being used the OS is resorting to " Virtual Ram" on the C: drive. (But even the Virtual Rams seems low. LIKE 672mb ??!!??) My solution(s) would be the following: A) Increase RAM to 2GB or the max that the MB will allow and have them not open up too many apps simutaneuosly. B) HOWEVER, by increasing the RAM the OS should not have to resort to " Virtual Memory, right ? C) I could also increase Ram to 2GB like i mentioned above and also increase Virtual Ram on the 40GB portion on the C: drive but it only has like 10 GB left. D) I could also try increasing RAM to 2GB and how about increasing the Virtual Ram on the 100 Gb portion of the C: drive to its maxium reconmendation? E) And if I did chose option 'D" how would i do this and tell the OS to use the Virtual Ram in the 100 GB portion and not the VM in the 40GB portion of the C: drive, Whew ??!!!! What do you think, any recomendations..... Increase the RAM to 2GB and leave the windows pagefile at default is what I would do. Increasing the pagefile is probably only a temporary solution, as hard drive read/write SPEEDS are far inferior to that of RAM, which is solid-state. Answer» I WANT to set it up so that when one of the users on a computer logs in, a small program RUNS (it is an EXE). I am not sure if the "Start up" FOLDER will do this or not. If it is that SIMPLE, GREAT! Otherwise how do I set it up so that the program runs only on that users log in? Yes. Just drag the shortcut of the program in question into the start-up folder of a particular user.

Answer» HI! I'm new here, I'm sorry if I make some mistakes in posting or in English or in anything else. I have toshiba laptop which has 1.5 GB of RAM and 50 GB of HDD. Originally I had Windows XP installed on it. All of a sudden the laptop became slow and I couldn't turn it off (I could turn it off just if I press the button). So I tried to reinstall the windows with both Windows XP SP 2 and SP 3 discs and it would get stuck on INSTALLING NETWORK or something like that. Then I tried with Win 7 but it would show blue screen with some dll error. Once it even showed blue screen and message which was saying something like dumping physical memory... I can't REALLY remember now. Then I remembered to disable network settings in BIOS and then I succeeded in installing SP 2, but I had the same problem like before reinstallation, I couldn't turn it off, it was slow and in addition I couldn't access to SYSTEM in CONTROL PANEL and sometimes to DISPLAY SETTINGS. And also when I run a program or when I clicked on My DOCUMENTS or My computer it wouldn't show it in the taskbar. After all that I tried again but it wouldn't accept those same discs with SP 2 and SP 3. The screen was just black. Can someone help me? I know that maybe all this is confusing. Answer» My PC is old but works ok. I have 2 hard drives in the box both internal. My C drive is ok but it wont detect my E drive ( 2ND hard drive). This occurred after i performed a cold boot. In fact it twouldnt start up. I paused the boot up process, brought up on a blue dos screen and entered restore defaults button. This fixed it all but no E drive. Can anyone help? DescaldecFor any old pc do these thing things first. 1. Clean out all the dust with low pressure air. (Canned Air) 2. Check and exercise all connectors to hard drive, PSU etc. Even RAM. Maybe even the PCI CARDS. But be careful you get them back in FULLY seated. (You EXCESSIVE a connection buy repeated removal and insertion.) 3. Replace the CMOS cell. Do not test it. Replacer it. Don't do anything to the CPU unless you know it is overheating. Does BIOS show what you wanted? Are both drive now recognized? Is Auto-Detect enabled? Reboot again and see. Routine maintenance on old PCs can solve almost half of the problems users report here. If you still have problems, come back and post more INFORMATION.

If it does do the job they are very inexpensive and can be very tiny if size is a concern.truenorthYou could also try disabling touchpad device settings/scrolling on your mouse properties by unchecking enable vertical and horizontal scrolling to see if the problem PERSIST or not.You can also try to minimize your scroll sensitivity. Go to the touch pad settings and click on properties and make SURE that your scroll settings is not really high. If it is you can lower it and hopefully it will regain control.

Answer» So I've got a very peculiar problem. I just installed windows XP on this computer a while ago, before I installed this though, I had the default XP Media Center Edition, this computer system was BOUGHT from the store so it had all the drivers and such pre-installed in the recovery OS. I don't know how much info is relevant so I will put as much as POSSIBLE, skim this paragraph if you want. I installed Defraggler by Piriform a while ago, while I had Media Center Edition, and it was taking forever to analyze the HD, I thought my computer froze, so I held the off button. When I tried to turn it back on it wouldn't go past the BLACK screen after the blue boot screen, it had the "Safe Mode" "Safe Mode with Networking" "Start Normally" you know the default error screen. None of the options work and I tried them multiple times. The biggest problem was on the blue boot screen, it had , that usually worked flawlessly, but this time it didn't even open the System Recovery screen, so I thought I had some HARD drive damage, which I confirmed I do through Error Checking and SeaTools (the official hard drive manufacturers error checking program) there is half of the hard drive 114GB taken up by no files at all, ever since I did a Error Checking through the default windows Error Checker, 114GB was occupied when I opened C:\ and highlighted everything even hidden folders it was only about 3GB taken up, so obviously there is damage to the hard drive, but it still works just fine for some reason. On to this OS install. I used an XP install disk and installed it, I can't remember if this was always like this since the latest OS install, but whenever I turn my computer on the CPU hovers at 95% - 100% and it's unbearably slow. After an arduous time installing drivers for my Processor which didn't do anything, I opened YouTube to watch some videos, and it fixed the CPU problem. That is the only way to fix the high CPU problem from what I've found. I've tried running .SWF files through "flashplayer_11_sa_32bit.exe" which didn't do anything, I've tried playing .FLV videos from YouTube through VLC Player which didn't do anything. I've also tried uninstalling Adobe Flash and reinstalling that didn't do anything. It's a very peculiar problem indeed. I don't think it has to do with the hard drive damage because I don't think watching a YouTube video would fix something that severe. This is every time I turn my computer on it's at 100% CPU all the time, no matter how long I leave it on it stays at 100% CPU, ONLY IF I watch a YouTube video it fixes itself, that's the only solution I've found. And when I check the processes as to what is high, it's usually the most prominent process, first it's Yahoo Messenger when it's loading up, then Dropbox, and when I start any browser it's that browser at 99 CPU. So any help would be much appreciated as this is a big annoyance, and if I lose internet this computer is bunk which worries me because I'm moving soon so it's important to figure this out. I have the program Everest which finds your system specs so I've attached a report detailing basically everything about my hardware and software. I have entered in WORD a list of books that I want to read and have SAVED the titles in a folder in the bookmarks list, which folder I called "Books to Read". When I open the folder "Books to read" the list of books pops up as desired but then when I click on a particular title to read the book information, such as, the full title and the name of the author and publication date , I get a window showing an advert for a dictionary and covering the whole screen. Moreover, this advert will not leave the screen . And the dictionary advert has nothing to do with the titles I saved in the folder "Books to Read".
