Solve : Free Download Manager Question? |
|
Answer» I had Free Download Manager on my old computer (Windows XP Pro, 32 bit) and it automatically popped up whenever I wanted to download something. This worked out fine because I could schedule a big download between 2:00-6:00AM so that I wouldn't use up my 200MB quota for a 24 hour period and end up with no internet service from Hughes until I'd paid the TIME penalty. I now have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Recently I download the Free Download Manager and can't seem to figure out how to get it to load automatically whenever I WANT to do a download. I can't figure out how to use it at all. Is there someone out there who is familiar with the settings for Download Manager who could explain to me how to do what I'd like it to do? I've gone through the settings and can't seem to FIND just what it is that will do the trick. Thank you |

Solve : Backing up entire mail file within Outlook? |
|
Answer» I wish to periodically back up all my e-mail from OUTLOOK. Outlook Help provides a method of doing this which involves having to back up one folder at a time as a .pst file. As I have a number of folders, to do this would be very tedious. Help on this website talks in terms of finding out where there is a .pst file held, but doing a search on C:\Windows within Windows Explorer SAYS that there aren't any files consisting of *.pst. Can anyone ADVISE on how to back up ALL e-mails from ALL folders in a fairly simple way? Your version of Outlook?Outlook 2003 (11.8330.8333) SP3Quote doing a search on C:\Windows within Windows Explorer says that there aren't any files consisting of *.pst. It's not in C:\Windows. You need to search your whole C: drive or you can use Outlook itself to tell you the exact path of your PST file. Open Tree View of your folders and right click "Personal Folders" click Properties and then Advanced and you will see a box labelled "Filename:" that contains the path to the PST file that holds all those folders. Or you can tell us what OS you are running and we can advise where to look. All Outlook emails are contained within 1 file (??.pst), contained not within C:\Windows. Probably under C:\Documents and SETTINGS\"Your User Name". Just search the entire C-drive.When I tried to search for '*.pst* on C:, it just gave a message "Nothing found for query '.pst' because the folder C: is not indexed. I went to the path C:\documents & settings\ ... \Outlook and found files there called Outlook, Outlook1 up to Outlook4, but it doesn't say whether they are .pst files (in Windows Explorer). It says they're OFFICE Data Files. Do you think they are the .pst files? If so, do I need to backup all 5 files to be sure of getting all the e-mails backed up? I'm running Windows XP Professional.Quote from: Dronfieldman on June 21, 2011, 12:50:15 PM it doesn't say whether they are .pst files (in Windows Explorer). It says they're Office Data Files. Do you think they are the .pst files? Have you set Explorer to show file extensions? Have now shown file extensions but none of the Outlook files at C:\Documents & Settings\ ...\ Outlook is a .pst file. |

Solve : shops putting os on systems? |
|
Answer» how can a shop format your hdd and put on a new os? do they put on new ones and you pay for the whole thing or do they have copies with special product codes?Okay, you know what? This is your third ridiculous post. You want to go into the computer repair business but you barely know how to turn on a computer. You need to buy a book.Yes, get a book. Read it. is that not what the forums for?Yes, and from time to time we give homework assignments.Quote from: scrappydooo on June 23, 2011, 08:40:52 AM is that not what the forums for? It's for helping people fix their computers and ask questions. The questions you ask bear the mark of Did not do the research (tm). There are two kinds of Repair shops: The shady ones that just throw pirated copies of windows on EVERY machine. The legit ones that actually have a system builders LICENSE and will install a legit copy of windows on the machine using the product key on it. There is also a third type, which basically just installs whatever Linux distro they think is cool, gives the person a link to a help forum and LET's them deal with it. Because the best way to get people to switch from windows is to force them, I guess. The link I gave him is for a real book sold in real book stores for under $20. He should buy it and read it. That is much, much faster than sating online and asking question with no structure. Most people can not type much more that 40 words per min. An average reader can read 300 words per min. And with good comprehension from a well-prepare textbook. This is not to discourage the OP, rather to encourage him to make the best use of his resources. A computer is spoor resource if you do not have any idea of what you are looking for. Some independent research and study away from then keyboard is needed to get the big picture of things. The OP MAY find thee is a better future in WRITING books instead of repairing computers. Of he can not afford a book, he can go to the library.thanks BC |

Solve : Can not run program under another user name? |
|
Answer» I recently SET up some computers at my work with two USER names, one for Admin and one for the individual user. The Admin was set up as the computer administrator, so that no one could LOAD unauthorized programs. The individual users were set up with limited. I just installed a new program on two of the computers (under the computer administrator user name", but when the individual user tries to run the program it tells them they must have "administrative privileges to run the program". I really do not want to give the individual user names computer administrative privileges but I want them to be able to use the programs I have installed. Does anyone know how this is possible? |

Solve : Opening Ports, Help!? |
|
Answer» I hope someone can help me out here, I cant seem to find help anywhere, not even from my ISP.... So basically what you're saying is that you get the above error message after you've filled in the info like shown in the image called "window 2"?Yes, that right, I follow the steps exactly so I dont understand the error... Not sure what firmware is, but I can look into the update QUESTION....Firmware is basically the software that makes the modem work. It is for the modem what Windows is for your computer. There is no firmware update for the speedstream.... I wish I could find some software that would let me adjust my port settings, I cant believe allowing a port to be used can be so much trouble....As long as the modem throws you an error when creating the FORWARD no amount of software or tweaking will get the port open. The forward needs to be done on the modem using the config supplied by the firmware. As far as I can see you're not doing anything wrong but just to be certain, what exactly do you do after you get to what is shown in "windows 2"?Quote from: Deerpark on March 23, 2008, 09:06:13 AM As far as I can see you're not doing anything wrong but just to be certain, what exactly do you do after you get to what is shown in "windows 2"?Below the box is an 'apply' button, I just click that and then the error page come up.... As you can see below I have tried different ways of configuring this, the results always the same.... [recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]Have you created all the entries in shown in the image? Do they appear to be saved even though you get an error message? I.e. if you power cycle the modem (pull out the power cable and reinsert it) does it still keep the port forwards you create? Quote from: Deerpark on March 23, 2008, 10:26:26 AM Have you created all the entries in shown in the image?Well, when I log back into the site they are still there, I havent unplugged the modem as of yet, never thought of that, but I will a little later as my wife is on another computer using that modem.... Thanx for the help Deerpark..... Alright, I seem to have found a way around this problem, while browsing through torrent threads around the net I read that 'UTorrent' uses different ports, and that you dont have to release them, after getting rid of Bit Tornado and installing UTorrent I am now able to upload again without port problems....(Whew!) Thanx for the help Deerpark.... Well you're welcome, but uTorrent requires forwarded ports just as much as any other p2p program.Well, the program itself did tests on my computer while installing checking if needed ports were open, and they were/are, I think the ports were in the 6000 range, in any case I can now seed on 3 different torrent sites....Your modem must support UPnP then. uTorrent can tell the modem what ports it needs forwarded and it is done automatically.Interesting, until the last few days I knew ZERO about ports... |

Solve : Windows Media will not play AVI video, only audio? |

Answer» I have Windows XP SP2 with Windows MEDIA Player 11 INSTALLED. I am able to watch an AVI file that I downloaded from BitTorrent. When I downloaded the same file on my Windows Vista Home Premium, I opened Windows Media Player and was only able to hear the sound (no video). Windows Media said that it was unable to play the files because it "is missing media usage rights." I TRIED to open this file on Rhapsody also, but it WOULD not play there either. What can I do?You may have some codecs missing. Get some here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Vista_Codec_Package.htmThanks. It worked!Cool |

Just changed break apart message length to LONGER than 120kb - was at default 60kbHave you tried disabling that OPTION altogether? I've never used it; never saw a need to use it. I've never used it; never saw a need to use it. You could install another email CLIENT and try sending PDF attachments from it. Two options: Windows Live Mail and Mozilla’s Thunderbird. In my mind, there's some doubt that the problem is in OE. This could be a way of proving whether it is or not. Good News! Unticked the break apart large files box accounts/properties/advanced Now sending pdf files normally Big sigh of relief - as I have tried Thunderbird twice and never got on with it - until this last problem express has been a breeze! Solve : Greyhound Tickets? |

Answer» HELLO, All... I am going to be reserving some greyhound bus tickets. Does anyone know what FORMAT they SEND you the tickets if you order them over the internet? Probably in the Adobe Acrobat Reader format. I don't know. If it's PDF, do you have a PDF reader installed? In addition to Adobe Reader, there's Foxit Reader, and Sumatra. If you need to install a PDF reader but SELDOM have a need for it, I suggest Foxit Reader. It and Sumatra are much SMALLER downloads than Adobe Reader. I haven't actually used Sumatra, so I don't know how it compares to Foxit. |

Answer» I don't understand. Where is 0KB FILE coming from, and where is 3.75KB file coming from?I think you have some problems with ur Windows Installtion ...! in two seperate emailsAs I told you, one image was just corrupted. The one that I ATTACHED for you that was 3.75kb does not open full size on my computer, though. It will open it whatever program I am USING, but only the same size as the thumbnail that is in my email. On other computers it opens full size, though. Also, the one that is 0kb will open fine on other computers.I've never heard of any computer, which would open 0KB file. Mine, obviously, doesn't open your 0KB file, so I guess, there is something wrong with my machine. Second image (3.75KB) is only 113x150 pixels, so how do you WANT to open it in full screen? Full screen, depending on MONITOR resolution, may be like 1280×720 pixels. Surely, you can save 150x113 image as 1280×720 image, but it'll be very grainy, and blurry. Below is your 113x150 image enlarged to 760x1280... |

Solve : Help with photoshop cs3 extended for Windows XP? |
|
Answer» Quote It has a value, otherwise it wouldnt WORK on the other computers It WORKS on machines that have ProgramFilesDir undefined. It does not work on your machine where it is defined. Correct so far? Just for kicks, on your machine what is ProgramFilesDir set to? Make note of this, then set it to NULL from the command prompt set ProgramFilesDir=. Now test it on your machine. What I suspect is happening is that value of %ProgramFilesDir% is being CONCATENATED with \Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\PhotoShop.exe and resolving to an illegal or non-existent LOCATION. |

Solve : Can QBasic access COM Ports for I/O?? |
|
Answer» Can QBasic access COM Ports for I/O? I wanted to be able to write a Program to access my POP Server in order to download Headers, and delete Junk. Have you tried free MailWasher - review and download here.. I thank you immensely Dusty. This is exactly what I need as a Dial-up user. I do use Mozilla Thunderbird which has an excellent Message Filter setup, but it unfortunately has many Bugs! The "Size" Condition doesn't work with Message Headers -- which defeats one of the advantages to only downloading Headers. Thanks to you my life is now simpler with MailWasher. Terry Mester Glad to be of service. Thanks for coming back at us to report your success.I'm always happy to conclude a Thread, and not leave it hanging. I should update the Website Address for the newest Version of MailWasher: http://www.mailwasher.net. The PC World Magazine Link is for the old Version 5. Quote from: Dusty on March 28, 2008, 04:09:57 AM Glad to be of service. Thanks for coming back at us to report your success.I've been reviewing the C Language Tutorial on cplusplus.com, and it appears to me that much of C is redundant compared to Basic. If Basic were the English Language, C looks like Eastern European. I simply cannot comprehend why the designer of C didn't appropriate Basic's English terminology. This was a dumb mistake! As far as I'm aware, C was created as a Language for compiling a Programme into Machine Language code. Back in the 1980s, there were no compilers for Basic, and programmers actually wrote in Machine Language. Given the ability to compile QBasic Programmes, I have a few questions regarding Basic vs. C: #1 - Is a COMPILED (Machine Language code) Basic Programme any "longer" or "less efficient" than a compiled C Programme? (e.g. looking at the length of modern software files like MS Windows and Mozilla, C Language doesn't look very efficient.) #2 - Can C Language do anything that QBasic cannot? (I know that there are some limitations to QBasic as noted in my Post above.) #3 - Is there a BETTER version of Basic which can do as much as C, and which can be compiled into Machine Language like C? I'm really not sure if it's worth me SPENDING my time to learn C++. I began using a computer 24 years ago when software was compact and efficient. Now it is bulky, fat and slow! Mr. Terry Mester I'll put in my 2-cents worth but don't give any guarantees as to accuracy. #1 No. But how do we judge program efficiency. Your experience (1980's) was probably in the days when Ram was very expensive so any fat had to be trimmed from programs to make them fit, program efficiency was all important. Nowadays with zillions of gigs of Ram being so cheap it doesn't really matter if the programmer uses one or a hundred instructions to achieve the same result. Also, with the vastly improved speed of processors, no-one needs to care how efficient a program is as long as the desired result is achieved! The major cost in programming today is manpower. #2 Yes. Basic, in all its versions, was written to run in a Dos environment (lets not get into the True-Dos/Emulator argument) so does not take kindly to modern Operating Systems. C, in all its versions, is fully compatible with most OS's. #3 Not to my knowledge (which is limited). Visual Basic (VB.6, VB.Net etc.) is very good and might be considered as Basic with a Visual add-on. i.e. one can create windows as well as use the Basic programming commands. That description is open to all sorts of criticism BTW QuickBasic is also compiled before running, even in the IDE. We mustn't overlook Visual C++ or Visual C#. Express editions for VB 2008, Visual C++ and Visual C# are available for free download here. I understand that Express editions are cut-down or lightweight versions of the read thing just to whet your appetite to part with a few dollars for the main attractions. I have some programming experience with VB and C++ but like to slip back into the dark ages so sometimes use Assembler, Fortran IV and - would you believe it - Cobol. My preference is for Assembler when the opportunity arises. Quote from: Dusty on March 30, 2008, 01:08:53 AM - would you believe it - Cobol.I can't believe it Dusty. I believe COBOL dates back to the 1960s! Seriously however, I fully agree with your line of thinking in not wanting to waste time and brain CAPACITY to learn a new Language when the old ones work perfectly fine. Personally, I WISH that the C Language had never been created simply because there was no reason for it to be created. The predicate behind C is the "COMPILER" which converts the C code into Machine Language code. This simplifies computer programming since it is much more burdensome to programme a computer in Machine Language. However, there was no reason whatsoever why the designers of C couldn't just make their Compiler work with BASIC. Just imagine how much better off the computer world would be today if they had just designed their Compiler for the Basic Language. The Line Numbers in Basic make it so much easier to find your way around a programme. I absolutely hate the fact that C doesn't use Line Numbers which makes no sense whatsoever since, unless I'm mistaken, Machine Language uses Line Numbers! What were the C designers thinking of? The lack of Line Numbers results in more programme duplication! It is also more difficult to diagnose Bugs in C than in Basic. Just look at the hundreds of thousands of Bug Reports filed with Mozilla. If you search my name on bugzilla.mozilla.org you'll see the many Bug Reports I've filed -- only one or two of those Bugs have ever been fixed. I just downloaded Mailwasher a couple days ago, and found Bugs in that too. I was flabbergasted to find that the V6 downloaded File (at 7.6M) is 120% LARGER than V5 (3.4M). The increasing size of programmes is almost certainly the fault of C Language, and its failure to use Line Numbers. This increasing size is a real problem on two fronts. For people like myself with 128M of Computer RAM Memory, Firefox gobbles up 50.8M to 59.8M of Memory; Thunderbird gobbles 10.1M to 30.2M; and MailWasher consumes 6.8M to 19M! By comparison Internet Explorer only registers 15M! This really slows down my Computer, and this is a big issue for people with older Computers. Programmers should not expect everyone to get a super-duper modern Computer! Additionally, there is the increasingly serious problem of the "bogging down" of the Internet! The Internet is expected to have a deficit of transmission capacity within a few years! These large software programmes being downloaded are causing this. Even though I only have 50K Dial-up, it actually doesn't take long to download an HTML Webpage. What takes long with Dial-up is downloading these multiple-Megabyte software programmes. This is thanks to C and sloppy programmers! Pretty much everybody can afford the cost of Dial-up which only costs me $18 for 25 Hours which I have 3 months to use up. I conserve my Internet Time very well, and this 25 Hours lasts me the full 3 months. Were it not for the amount of time it takes to download Megabytes of software, more people would have Dial-up home Internet service instead of nothing at all. The frustrations of downloading large software programmes is what causes people to just cancel their Internet service if they can't afford High Speed. However, once Internet transmission capacity hits a deficit, High Speed is going to seem rather slow -- thanks to C. Thanks for the Link to Visual Basic. I'm going to check it out. I'd be more than happy to pay for it if its good, and not full of Bugs. I'd be happy to pay for Mozilla if it weren't full of Bugs, and constantly suffering more Bugs. It's of course not reasonable to expect people to pay for a programme with Bugs which will never get fixed. Terry MesterThat's a real good rant about C Not sure that you're on the right track but each to his own. As to line numbers - well perhaps you're a Goto fan and like to produce spaghetti coding. Way past time for a move to QuickBasic 4.5 with its inbuilt compiler and forget line numbers. Can't recall MENTIONING that my line of thinking is "not wanting to waste time and brain capacity to learn a new Language when the old ones work perfectly fine.", the outdated languages work well in some, though very few, circumstances and the opportunities to use them are diminishing. Good luck. |

Solve : Making transparent gif.'s for PRINTING in Word97? |
|
Answer» I write snail mail letters with Word 97. (My OS is Win98SE) I also often make my own stationery to do that LETTER WRITING on W/97 as well. When writing, I like to insert free clipart/icons that I have downloaded to my PC in my letters as I go along (to help with creating expression to my words for the snail mail reader). |

Answer» Hi again, there are also keystroke recording programs that you can find anywhere.Well, you're talking about something that would track all keystrokes by a user, whether in Excel or any other application; in other words, a key logger. Solve : Quicktime problems...? |
|
Answer» SERIOUSLY, I challenge you to figure this one out. This is the third WEBSITE I've been to and no one has got a clue what's wrong, let ALONE how to fix it. To put it simply, my quicktime is BROKEN. "Stuck" so to speak. I cannot use quicktime, or Itunes, without getting an illegal operation warning and it closing before it even opens. I cannot install quicktime. Mid-way thru it encountersan error. I have tried several different versions of quicktime. But yet, the same issue during installation. I cannot un-install quicktime. It encounters an error very similar to when attempting to install. I cannot run any quicktime files. This is VERY annoying, as many web pages, often ones I'm interested in, have quicktime. As soon as a quicktime file is loaded in FIREFOX (or IE) it tells me the plugin has preformed an illegal operation and I'm strongly advised to close firefox. Upon clicking "ok" firefox locks up, and crashes. No other programs have this problem, and I've swept my computer for viruses several times, with several different programs. I am running Windows XP, and this problem has not always existed, as I used to run both quicktime an Itunes.Anyone? |

Solve : Need help with Excel formula!!? |
|
Answer» Hey squall01 and soybean. Thanks to both of you for helping me out on this one. You're both a great help!! I REALLY appreciate it. Been struggling w/this for 4 days now!! Anyway, first off, I am using Excel 02 version. Below I've COPIED some data from the first two columns of the spreadsheet I'm working on. Soybean, what you've mentioned is giving me a good idea, but I'm not quite there. When I said time periods, I should have been more specific. I meant periods of the year, so the first column covers Jan., 2nd column, Feb. I need Feb column to show either yellow for a 10% or below difference and red for above 10% difference. I'm not sure if I need to write and actual formula for this or if I can select an option from the dropdown list in the conditional formatting box. I should have been more specific. You need one or two columns to calculate the change. In the example-image I posted earlier, I used two columns; that can be consolidated into one column. So, column C could be used to calculate the percentage change between whatever is represented in A1 and B1. Conditional formatting would be applied to Column B, then, to accomplish your objective. If you don't want to see the column(s) used to calculate the change, then just hide it/them. Here are two images to illustrate a three column layout and the conditional formatting panel for B1: |
