I have a laptop with an optical drive with an older version of MS Word installed. I also have a copy of the CD. I have a newer laptop WITHOUT an optical drive. I can't seem to figure out how to use a memory stick to copy it from one pc to the other. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.I would suggest picking up an external optical drive, it would make things much simpler.I have actually done it before but it was a long time ago and I can't remember what I did! The main issue is how to copy it from my CD or the HD of the one laptop to the memory stick. Hi, i'm having an unbelievable annoying experience with my HEADPHONES at the moment... and NO this is not a hardware issue cause everything was fine till i INSTALLED skype..
My stats at the current time are: windows 7 64bit, hp laptop, and some gaming headphone with mic.
Ok so what i have are two sound options and that is the laptop speakers and the Independent speakers. For some reason even when skype is no longer running and i have the headphones plugged in the sound is played through the laptop speakers... All sound... I cant find any solutions to this problem so i decided to post this up to see if any body COULD shed some light onto my situation....

Create another user on your computer, with same privileged level. But do not install or USE Skype on that user. Reboot your PC and log into the new user. Try your favorite game. You may have to import some settings from the original user, or just start with new settings for the game just to see what happens.

Now then, use then fast user switch thing to just go over to you normal user. Bring up Skype, use it, then close. After that, switch back top the new user and start your game again. What happens? You might find the problem is attached to user settings. Skype modified user settings and failed to restore them.

i right clicked the volume at the taskbar, then clicked playback devices. right clicked and disabled headphone. All sounds go into through headphones no matter what so long as ur headphone is plugged in for some reason...

In Windows 7 (64 bit) I store all my music in the Library as you are supposed to. My question is, some (but definitely not all) of the music files display the album cover associated with the file when displayed as icons, how do I make them all do it ? Is there some way to ASSOCIATE the album cover with the file (Mp3,WMA,Flac etc) The files are complete and correctly STATE the album name etc but only some files do this.The media files play correctly and all else seems in order, I know its not life threatening but would be CURIOUS to know if anybody else has this problemIt may be that some of the MP3's have the album cover written directly into the ID3 tag.

You can actually do this for your entire library USING something like MP3Tag; automatically in most cases, as it finds the cover art online and then embeds it in the ID3 tag data.

I have always used Wordperfect, but I have a new computer with Win 7 64bit. The Wordperfect that I have is too old and will not work on the new OS. I have MS Works 9 as an OEM on the new computer, but I don't like it. I am retired and do not want to spend much on new Office software. I checked my GMAIL this past evening on my windows dell desktop and all of my stored email is gone. Folders are still there but no email. I quickly scanned my system and reset password using my IPAD. Is this likely a GMail issue or someone got bored in hack land. The only thing I did recently on my Pc different was a defrag. Any ideas, thanks for any input.

That would bring you a command prompt, you can CD to the directory your want then start the batch. The DOS box should STILL be on the desktop. Or in the task bar.

My wife created a cd disc of family pictures. They all have a .tl FILE extension. I have spent the better part of an hour trying to research how to open them without success. No idea what program she used to create them. I can display the various files as content of the cd but cannot open them. Anyone have a suggestion of what will open them? truenorth

Try copying the files to your HDD and renaming the file extension to jpg/bmp...BC & Transfusion, Thanks GUYS . Yes the points that you both mentioned were presented in my searches. Certainly would NOT have been a user selected choice to use that type of save function (Roxio) that would have resulted in the .tl extension. The only saving grace is (and please let us keep it our secret) my wife has a bad habit of NEVER deleting anything so while they are scattered all over her HDD they are still ALL there. This is far from the 1st time she has used the ROXIO (infact she says it is the ONLY burning program she uses) to perform this task. She is on automatic updates and was wondering if some recent update caused this file association to kick in.

Something called ADBLOCK has blocked CERTAIN addresses(specifically SlingBox sites) and I can't delete it. I couldn't find the PROGRAM anywhere on my HARD drive and when I clicked the tiny block window, I got a CONFUSING screen of different block choices, none of which allow me to operate my screen. I have an old computer that has many old movies on it from a Sony handycam. The files are listed as IMA Files. When I click on them, they open the program named Image Mixer that came with the camera but the individual movie clips are not there. My husband deleted a lot off the computer in preparation to junk it but I don't want to get rid of it till I can salvage these VIDEOS. The ASSOCIATED icons are IMX as Image Mixer is the program that opens them.

The movies that do open are listed as "Movie CLIP" and open in Windows Media Player.

Is there a program that I can convert these files to something else? Anything else?

I have a DOCUMENT which has red and green lines due to AUTOCORRECT (the words in question are names) and I would like to know if the lines will be visible when the document is opened by the RECIPIENT. I emailed the document to myself and at first blush there were no lines however when I clicked on the document...the lines reappeared. Does this mean they will appear for anyone who has autocorrect? Is there a way to avoid this.

If not, try cutepdf for turning it into a PDF document. That way it will open in a new program, uneditable, and will apear the same on all MACHINES.

Let's take the ip address of 218.10.19.21 for example which Mbam blocked.
l can do a WHOIS on this and quite frankly, don't KNOW how they linked to my computer.

hi GUYS i have a tone of .mkv files (proximally 117GB of battlestar galactica =D) but when i try PLAYING any of them its like one of the sound channels is not playing, what i MEAN is when its playing i GET the sound effects and the background music but you can barely hear the voices on it. it does this on both VLC media player and DivX player... any ideas what's wrong?Don't use that video format. Hi: this is more of an advice question, than a help issue. I would like to download an MKV converter that can handle subtitles. My problems are:

1. I want this to be free.
2. I want this to be safe.
3. Most of the programs online don't specify if they can handle subtitles as well, and I've had some problem with that.

How can I find out specifically if a particular program can handle subtitles? Does anyone have any experience with this?

He has Windows 7 and several different converter programs that he uses to go from MKV to AVI, etc. But, he says when he converts the files, the subtitles don't go along with them. He seems to have heard that there is such a thing as an MKI converter that will also convert the subtitles along with the film.

Whenever I search for this on CDnet whatever I've found either--a)doesn't say whether it also converts subtitles or not, and based on my son's experience that the converters he now has don't do this, we figure they have to state this at the beginning. b) It has terrible ratings (junk, memory hog, etc.) or both. Plus, c) Most are free only for a few minutes trial and then you have to pay.

What do you suggest?

Subtitles come in two ways.
1. If subtitles are hardcoded into mkv file, when you convert the file to avi, subtitles will come along as well.
2. Your son may be dealing with a different situation, when he has two separate files, mkv (movie itself) and srt (subtitles).
In that case, if both files have same names (movie.mkv and movie.srt) and you play them on your computer, using, let's say VLC, VLC will pick up those subtitles and it appears like subtitles are included in a movie, while in fact, they're in a separate file.

In order to tell you more, I need to know, what exactly he wants to do with those mkv files. Burn them to a DVD, USB stick, or....burn them to a DVD.

DVDFlick downloads just fine for me.Broni: The downloads part works fine. But when it comes time to install, there is a problem. I had this problem (still unresolved) with Amazon "unbox", which is a device you have to download to be able to download films from Amazon. The download works fine, but when it comes time to install, I get a message that the unbox can't connect to Amazon. When I wrote to them they said it was a security problem on my end. I'm not using a firewall. I use AVG and disconnected it, but the same problem occurred. I do use a proxy cloaker. Could this be the problem?

I've asked this question in several other forms & constantly get misunderstood.
I know how to change the SOUNDS of the PC,what I want to do is add my own "events" in there.For instance have the PC play a sound when I start control PANEL, or when I open Win amp, or when windows finishes defrag,or whatever "event" I choose.

In order for a event sound to be played when you start- say, winamp, something has to basically say "hey, windows, this event occured, make the appropriate sound for it".

There is no code in winamp- or any other application, for that matter- that is coded to trigger your custom event. You can hack in new events via the registry and utilities and whatnot, but unless an application actually invokes those event sounds, they are NEVER used.

I have been using Microsoft Excel and always open application and do work from it and also SAVE it. But suddenly when I try to open an Excel file saved work, I am receiving the following message

Have any SUGGESTION for solving the above ?

I was trying to remove voice from a song. I was using many programs which google "recommended" me , such as "Audicity", "Launch VDJ" , "Karaoche Power" , and many other but none of them worked, actually they transformed the song into a "horror" ONE ), having the voice still there .

May some of you used a soft which really did its job for this, please suggest me one if you know. (because now i really believe that this can not be done)

Why would a directory containing certain Excel and WORD DOCS be moved to ANOTHER directory on my server? It's not being erased, just seems to move to another directory indiscriminately.Files dont normally move on their own. Do you have multiple users who have privileges to the data LOCATION to move it? The most common issue with
MS Office is default save LOCATIONS, so I would look into your properties on MS Office to see if the default location is where the data is moving enexpectedly

What it is, i have an acer aspire ax3950 desktop pc and i wanted to buy a new GRAPHICS card for it..but i was told it had to be a low PROFILE one..ive had a look at a few and cant find a good one..what i was wondering is, would i be able to basically take out all components and put them into a bigger tower were ID not have to worry about buying a low profile card, how easy would it be transfering the insides over to a new tower?, also would i be able to then buy a normal graphics card for it?.. This is a BIG one. My daughter left her laptop here and I decided to clean it up for her because she never does it. She was not complaining about it running slow and she had no problems with it.

It's a HP Pavilion dv2000 running XP.

I tried running malwarebytes and it needed upgrading I then tried running superantispyware which also needed upgrading.
I upgraded superantispyware and proceeded to run it. It ran for almost 1/2 and hr with 573 objects found then I got the blue screen of death.
I rebooted to last known good start up and wanted to run a disk clean up. I started disk clean up and it ran for about 15 minutes and came up with the entrys to check what you wanted to delete I checked them all and continued the clean up. Again I got the blue screen of death and proceeded to reboot only this time I received the following message ;
Windows could not start because of an error in the software
please report this problem as
load needed DLL's for kernal
Please contact your support person to report this problem.

I do have my laptop to go on the net and create disks if I need to. I already looked for any system cds that may have come with the dv2000 and none can be found.

What can I do !

Thanks in advance for the help.I usually wait for a response but being I can't afford to replace her laptop right now and edgy to see if this is fixable I decided to use the PC Recovery option available when the laptop was booted.

"IF" this does get me back to being able to use the laptop what can I do to guard against this happening again and can I create a boot able cd for future use ? The oddest thing I ever saw.

MP.You OBVIOUSLY need to follow a finer grain cleaning procedure. (which is absolutely logical since this is not your own pc).

Also, you could have created a ghost IMAGE or something beforehand.

Actually it is my youngest daughters laptop the one I gave her when I got a new one.
She usually asks me to do a "clean-up" because she never does.
Her superantispyware and malwarebytes were so old I had to download new versions.
I've been on this SITE a LONG long time now and very proficient at a general clean-up and also know enough to stop at a certain point when things go wrong.

Her laptop right now is up and running I ran Superantispyware,malwarebyte and avg I also ran hijackthis and then used the tool provided here to weed out the suspects of which there was only 1 and I also ran chkdsk/f/r with no errors.

Here's the problems that persist - When I try to run disk cleaner I get the blue screen of death. For this I went in and checked boxes one by one until it was almost to zero. For compressed files I had to view files and manually delete them one by one. Again I try to run disk cleaner thinking it should run clean through since there is nothing in the but the compressed files still comes up with an amount but when I go to view files nothing is present?
I also cannot UPDATE to sp3 from Microsoft updates the error code I receive is 0x80070017.

hi i am wanting to use windows dvd MAKER to burn my AVI files to dvd. This program is great as it does everyting for me however there is no sound on the OUTPUT dvd when playin on tv or laptop. I thought I'd give it a try, since I didn't have to go to work this morning. I have Windows 7 and I have been using the built-in imaging tool, and it has got me out of trouble more than once. I firmly believe that only a fool relies on a backup scheme unless they definitely know (a) that it works (b) how to use it, so I decided to do a backup and restore. In case the Macrium restore didn't work I made a Windows 7 system image on one of my external hard drives, and a Macrium image on another. I have 3 external hard drives, and I normally make an image every few days, rotating the disks, and overwriting the oldest backup.

I have a 100 GB system partition, with 47 GB used. A Windows 7 image takes about 40 minutes to create, and the same amount of time to restore. The Macrium image (no compression) took 25 minutes to create and 2 hours 15 minutes to restore. Maybe if a person had an earlier operating system, they might want to use this, but I won't be switching! I must say I got quite a few household chores done during those 2 hours and 15 minutes, so I suppose I should be grateful to you, Allan...

I use Acronis True Image. A 19Gb image of my system partition (on a W7 system) takes 10 minutes to create and APPROXIMATELY the same time to restore. I've never used Macrium, but the fact that it took so long to restore simply doesn't sound right. Well, don't know what to tell. you. Even on an old XP system a True Image boot-time restore (of the system partition - similar size to W7) takes less than 15 minutes.

Recently lost the use of my webcam and SONY gave me an update for my MACHINE VGN BX51VN but this has failed to correct the problem. This is the updte they gave me. VAIO camera Utility upate 2.2.23.11150
.After downloading the update, I was told to verify it's success which it fails to do, INSTEAD bringing up the NUMBER of it's original install. I have repeated this many times but it makes no difference to the outcome. I need the webcam but fail to be ABLE to solve this problem.BTW checked that the drivers are working correctly and they are.

Is there a WAY to display date and time in VLC? I know I can do it thru the COMMAND line. But this is only possible via the command line. You would still need to open your old account to import/export contacts in Ymail. Just not sure if there is another software to do that but I doubt there is one. You may have been hacked other than someone literally knows your password or username. Make sure you have better protection SOFTWARES installed and updated. Always Practice safe browsing.

May be you have this issue only on your pc. If this is happening you could format it and try after, or try to find an restore point when messenger was ok.

I do not recommend formatting your PC to fix your problem, thats VERY over the top.

How can you make it easy. In read the article in Wikipedia as best I could can came out knowing less that when I went in. I mean, I started out thinking I KNEW what a RNG is and I could whip up a little program to make up passwords for me. But after I read over less the half the article, my knowledge has evaporated into thin air.

So, please, is there a simple little trick to making a small set of pseudo random numbers? In the RANGE of 1 to 100. No actual code needed, just the outline of a simple algorithm using some constants, addition, subtraction thin gs like that. Yeah, and modulus is OK. Gotta have modulus. I can understand that.

Today I was fixing networking issue for one of my client (router and a parallel HP printer).

He is using a desktop with windows XP professional SP3

During my work on his computer I used two softwares which are CClenaer (tune up his computer BROWSER ) and Kyocera Printer Driver Deleter to remove the driver for the HP printer (it was not working properly)

When I finished my work Before I left his office he was able to download a file from his outlook (used as mail client for his ISP) 2007 (means it was working), to test the printer if it prints or not.

I chose an option : “Install windows updates and shutdown” and I left his office then I received a call from him telling me that his outlook is not finding a file :

When I drove back to his office and checked the file “test.pst” I could not find such a file in the location above(i.e C:\Documents and Settings\omrion\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook) !!!!!!

For sure I had not touched his outlook when I was working the first time.

I felt embarrassed he might have thought that I had damage his outlook.

I checked the Control Panel --> Mail --> Data Files I found those 3 profiles :

I tried to use either one of : Outlook.pst in C:\emailfile or Outlook.pst in C:\omrion\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft

All I can see the old emails till 2009 but not afterwards !!!!!

I remember a while back dealing with pst's reaching a critical size and causing problems. Your client should be running a backup or redundancy process to protect from lost data. It is possible for the outlook to write to the pst and crash and KILL the pst file in which it can be written as a 1k file. Just CREATING an empty file creates a 1k file. I would suggest implementing a backup procedure for your client either daily, weekly, or monthly backups depending on how critical the data is to protect from deletion. If your lucky his system might be able to get the pst back by restoring the system back to an earlier recovery date...BUT be sure to save all recent data to a thumb drive and remove it from system. Bring system back to date when his pst is functional, then roll recent data back to the system. Backup the PST's to thumb drive in case ccleaner or driver removal has a strange behavior of affecting the PST, then safely remove thumb drive. You may have to perform your ccleaner and that printer driver removal again as for it will restore what you worked on to remove. Then verify his pst is there and move on.

i'm trying to CREATE a straightforward invoice and budget tracker in excel. right now i have 3 worksheets in my xls.

the first is the main page. it has 4 columns: project #; planned budget in $s; invoiced amt in $s; remaining $s (=planned minus invoiced). except for the invoiced amt column, all the columns are already populated.

i want my co-workers to be able to be able to input invoices as they come in into another worksheet. that worksheet will have the following columns: project #; invoice amt; vendor name; employee name

i've tried creating a pivot table that will populate with just project # and invoice amount data as it comes in throughout the fiscal quarter/year and is entered in the table described in the paragraph above.

basically i want the "invoiced amt" column on the first main page to continually update with the $ amt info as it is entered. i'm running into difficulty because there are multiple invoices per project #. so i can't SIMPLY populate the pivot table with the project #s right off the BAT. they have to continually update and coincide as the info is entered.

i hope this makes a little bit of sense. obviously i am not an advanced excel user by any means. any help/guidance would be GREATLY appreciated.

thanks very much I haven't worked much with pivot tables. So, I may not be able to offer advice on them. But, if I were doing this project, I'm pretty sure I'd want to use Access instead of Excel. Access reports can automatically update when additional data has been entered into a database.

If its free and you are looking for a piece of backup software, I suppose its worth a try if you need something like this. I have tried other Paragon products and I have only had problems with one program. They made a drive emulator that I was hoping to use to create virtual images of my games to be able to play games without having to swap DVD's. This worked for some games, but most WOULD not FUNCTION using this utility. ( Likely that the anti-piracy of these disks was at play ) So I bought it and wasted money. I dont see a need to virtualize a CD or DVD for any other PURPOSE other than to play a protected disk in what would make it act like its native emulated environment. Music CD's and other data, DOESNT need to be emulated you can have MP3's or just the regular data on your systems hard drive. It was a disappointment of wasted money.

A friend bought me his Toshiba Satellite L300, to have a look at, as he had got a virus and it would not allow anti/virus/malware PROGRAMS to run even in safe mode.
I used Avira rescue disk to boot from and did a scan and it deleted two trojans and one virus.
After rebooting into the OS, (Vista home basic), all of the programs had lost there links to start them up, including IE.

Is it possible to do sfc /SCANNOW and point it at the recovery PARTITION to resore these links.

Or is there a simpler way.

The purpose is to help the OP. The problem the OP has is related to the problems many others have with the AT&T SMTP protocol.

I have my own SMTP SERVERS available to me, but I can not use them with my AT&T account. When I had Comcast I could SMTP all day long with no problem. I even forgot what e-mail Comcast gave me. On the other hand, AT&T wants you to use their email as your default and maybe only service. It is posible, but AT7T is loath to ever let you use some other SMTP other that what they have. The SMTP requires specific ports that are blocked ny ATT servers.

Here are his OPTIONS:

• Call AT&T and do as they say.
• Do all email with web mail only.
• Get an account with somebody else.

Are you suggesting that it is impossible to access an AT&T E-mail using a standard mail client like outlook or Thunderbird? if that is the case it seems dreadfully silly for them to have either SMTP or POP3 on a network facing server, since those would only be used by such clients.
