Solve : Copying MS Word from 1 laptop to another? |
Answer» I have a laptop with an optical drive with an older version of MS Word installed. I also have a copy of the CD. I have a newer laptop WITHOUT an optical drive. I can't seem to figure out how to use a memory stick to copy it from one pc to the other. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.I would suggest picking up an external optical drive, it would make things much simpler.I have actually done it before but it was a long time ago and I can't remember what I did! The main issue is how to copy it from my CD or the HD of the one laptop to the memory stick. Drag and drop might work but only if the right FILES are involved.Quote from: Quantos on July 08, 2011, 10:22:29 PM I would suggest picking up an external optical drive, it would make things much simpler.I would suggest reading (1) the rules of this forum concerning piracy and seeking advice about breaking copyright and licensing restrictions (2) The MICROSOFT Office EULA. Quote From the Office Standard 2007 EULA So with standard Office you can install on 1 (one) fixed (desktop) COMPUTER and 1 (one) portable (laptop, notebook, net top, netbook) computer. Two laptops would violate the EULA. Nice CATCH Salmon. |

Solve : Album Cover Icons? |
Answer» In Windows 7 (64 bit) I store all my music in the Library as you are supposed to. My question is, some (but definitely not all) of the music files display the album cover associated with the file when displayed as icons, how do I make them all do it ? Is there some way to ASSOCIATE the album cover with the file (Mp3,WMA,Flac etc) The files are complete and correctly STATE the album name etc but only some files do this. The media files play correctly and all else seems in order, I know its not life threatening but would be CURIOUS to know if anybody else has this problemIt may be that some of the MP3's have the album cover written directly into the ID3 tag. It may be that some of the MP3's have the album cover written directly into the ID3 tag. ID3v2 tags have album art support-can confirm this with ITUNES, MP3Tag, and an iPod.Quote from: reddevilggg on July 08, 2011, 07:26:55 AM Are all your albums original, shop bought CDs or copies. That will obviously make a difference. No, not really. |

Solve : WordPerfect vs Open Office or Softmaker Office? |
Answer» I have always used Wordperfect, but I have a new computer with Win 7 64bit. The Wordperfect that I have is too old and will not work on the new OS. I have MS Works 9 as an OEM on the new computer, but I don't like it. I am retired and do not want to spend much on new Office software. Can anyone tell me which of the 2 other software is most like Wordperfect? I second open office a a good free word processor. The Major turning point was that the first stable version of wordperfect for windows came nearly a year after Word for windows 2.0. (5.1 was released rather soon after Winword 2 but you had to install it from DOS and it had all sorts of messy stability issues, too). They just never caught up after that. I imagine that whoever was in charge of it at the time was banking that windows wasn't any different then, say, Desqview or any number of shell programs, and that developing a program exclusively for it was sort of a waste of resources (at the time this was not an unreasonable assertion, really). They just got unlucky, and they never caught up, especially because of the ownership changes, which basically took off little bits of the product with every ownership change ("we'll sell all of it, except for this component" type of stuff). Basically, they were a year late with a Windows version, nine months late with a 32-bit version, and a year and a half late with a version that worked on NT, and even these late versions were all EXTREMELY buggy compared to the MS Office releases they were supposed to compete with. In many ways it's more a casualty of the DOS->Windows migration whose corpse is still being passed around. I don't think it was ever "the" word processor. when I think of old word processors whose various shortcuts got so ingrained in PEOPLES skulls despite them being completely non mnemonic (wordstar diamond, anybody), I think of Wordstar, which was the undisputed champion for a very long time. ANYWAY, I have to agree with the OpenOffice recommendations. Thanks for all your answers! It's great to have some expert opinions. I have downloaded Open Office and have not done much with it, but what I see, I like. It has a lot more than Works (OEM on this computer) and a lot of the items I miss from WP. Thanks for the history lesson. Thanks again, RoneeeI use version 11 with SP1 and SP2 updates. New version of Word Perfect is on Amazon for about $40. But you can get a 30 day trial here: Quote What's NewWed Perfect can use VBA macros. That COULD make it a good choice for an organization that is currently using Microsoft Office.I haven't, but you might, look into the Win 7 feature for running XP software. It might save a ton of re-learn time & hassle.Quote from: LoveMusic on June 10, 2011, 08:15:02 PM I haven't, but you might, look into the Win 7 feature for running XP software.Just for the record, that requires Win 7 Pro or Ultimate. Solve : GMAIL Issue? |
Answer» I checked my GMAIL this past evening on my windows dell desktop and all of my stored email is gone. Folders are still there but no email. I quickly scanned my system and reset password using my IPAD. Is this LIKELY a GMail issue or someone got bored in hack land. The only thing I did recently on my Pc different was a defrag. Any ideas, thanks for any input. Do you always access your gmail VIA web browser or do you use an email client such as Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows Live MAIL. etc. for it? I log directly in via the google site to gmail.Quote from: 06Honda on June 11, 2011, 05:57:23 AM I checked my GMAIL this past evening on my windows dell desktop and all of my stored email is gone. Folders are still there but no email. I quickly scanned my system and reset password using my IPAD. Is this likely a GMail issue or someone got bored in hack land. The only thing I did recently on my Pc different was a defrag. Any ideas, thanks for any input. If you do not use any email client for your gmail account, as you've indicated, and you do not use Google's Gmail offline tool, then your email always resides out on Google's mail server and whatever maintenance you do on your computer has nothing whatsoever to do with your email. Do you have any indication that someone might have gotten your previous password and signed-in to your gmail account? Otherwise, I have no idea what is the cause of your dilemma. Thanks for taking the time to post back, MUCH appreciated. Maybe it was just a glitch, with a much harder password now we'll just move forward and chalk it up as a tech issue. Thanks again.Gmail had a security issue a few days AGO and it seemed to cause a few problems. I use Comcast as my primary email account but have gmail as a back up. After the security problem I couldn't log in to gmail for a few days but it seems back to normal now. |

Solve : Cannot open a .tl file? |
Answer» My wife created a cd disc of family pictures. They all have a .tl FILE extension. I have spent the better part of an hour trying to research how to open them without success. No idea what program she used to create them. I can display the various files as content of the cd but cannot open them. Anyone have a suggestion of what will open them? truenorth This would not be possible FROM the cd disc ...Why not? Edit: You might at least try it. soybean, I believe in order to be able to do something/anything with them i would need to be able to do more than just display them as icons and determine their properties. As i stated in my original post this is all i can do " I can display the various files as content of the cd but cannot open them. " I don't know if this is the manner that you are suggesting. However as an example if i place the cd in the optical drive and open the content of the disc (using explorer) then i right click on a particular file many options are presented for dealing with it. Properties/send to/etc/etc. However trying to perform most items (such as send to=my documents) results in a never ending activity light on the optical device but never an execution of the chosen action. All this to say i have tried and no opportunities ever arise to do anything with the cd files. truenorthIts because you cannot change a files properties when it's on a CD... Copy 1 to a FOLDER on your HDD and then try the suggestion of renaming the file...Patio, Yes i do understand that anything on a CD/DVD is for want of a better expression "hardwired" and cannot be altered whilst in that medium. It was my understanding that what Soybean was suggesting was to take one of the files (from the cd) and relocate it to a HDD then change it. Now i am beginning to wonder if what you (and perhaps he also ) are suggesting is to go to the original file (which as stated is still on her HDD) and change THAT file to a jpeg or whatever and locate the resultant image on her HDD. However as i already stated there is really NO reason to do that as they are ALL already a jpeg or bitmap. To see if i could add more to this issue i just went up to her computer and selected 670 mb of photos (all jpegs or bitmaps) from files on her HDD and had her burn them using Roxio Easy Cd Creator (data disc) to a cd-r disc. The only DIFFERENCE created was that previously ALL her stored pictures were associated with a viewer called "Zoner". She uninstalled that software and they all became associated with a software we have by "Magix". Really cannot see how that would have made any difference. The newly created disc has all the images she burned VIEWABLE and all are jpeg or bitmap as they were before being burned to the cd. So as to why and how the disc that prompted this post came out with .tl files is a conundrum.truenorth |

Solve : mkv converter with subtitles: any suggestions?? |
Answer» Hi: this is more of an advice question, than a help issue. I would like to download an MKV converter that can handle subtitles. My problems are: But when it comes time to install, there is a problemWhat is the exact problem, when you try to install DVDFlick? Details, step by step and exact error messages (if any), please.Broni: Great news! After I wrote to you, and the question came to mind "could it be my cloaker/proxy", I thought, well, why not disconnect the proxy. I changed my browser settings to not use a proxy and shut off the proxy and then tried to install. It worked! Now, all that's left is to actually try to copy the MKV onto a DVD and see if the subtitles come with it. Any special instructions on that regard? As I mentioned in a previous LETTER, some of the files are hardcoded with no separate files for subtitled versions, and some have separate files. Thus far, neither type have carried their subtitles with them when burned to the DVD. We'll try with this converter that you suggested and let you know. Thanks so MUCH for being here with us. DrDClick on a LINK, I gave you to DVDFlick manual. All is there.Thanks. We'll do that and let you know how it worked. Dr. D. |

Certainly XP does.Alright thanks. I know windows 2000 had a was different than windows vista and 7. but i wasnt sure if windows xp was the same. I went from DOS to Win 3 to 3.1, 95, 98, XP, Vista & 7. So in FACT I guess I lied - never used NT either Just a point - the "root" directory of a disk is the top folder, so that the root directory of drive C for example C:\. The folder where you find the Windows files is the system root folder and is pointed to by the system variable %systemroot% in all NT family OSs and is preferable to hard coding a particular folder name if you want applicability across all Windows NT derived OSs. Simple FACT, that your computer didn't get infected proves just nothing.Quote from: Broni on June 17, 2011, 06:30:03 PM On your personal computer you can do whatever you want, but it's definitely NOT, what 99% of security experts recommend for computer users.can you quote 99% of these security experts? Can you find more than a handful that aren't on the payroll of a company that develops AV software? didn't think so. You're just pulling statistics out of nowhere to back up your alleged claim, which proves nothing more than my anecdotal evidence. I can tell you only two things and this will be my very LAST comment. 1. Recommending using a computer without any protection is totally irresponsible advice. It puts in danger not only your computer, but any other computer connected to the net (by being exposed to potentially your computer being infected, used as a bot, etc.). If your ISP would discover, you're not using any protection, your service would be shut down right AWAY. I ASSUME, they must be ignorant too. 2. I WORK on 10-20 infected computers every day, so I DO know first hand, what happens to unprotected computers. Good luck! |

Solve : Macrium Reflect 4.2.3638 Free Edition? |
Answer» Macrium Reflect 4.2.3638 Free Edition I use Acronis True Image. A 19Gb image of my system partition (on a W7 system) takes 10 minutes to create and approximately the same time to restore. I've never used Macrium, but the fact that it took so long to restore simply doesn't sound right. BTW, I use standard compression as opposed to no compression, so the size of the image is obviously smaller. The other image tools I've used, and believe me I've tried a number, take longer to restore a compressed image than an uncompressed one, I think, due to the compession/decompression cpu overhead. I believe. I made a compressed Macrium image yesterday which is 28 GB versus 47 GB for the uncompressed version. Well, don't know what to tell. you. Even on an old XP system a True Image boot-time restore (of the system partition - similar size to W7) takes less than 15 minutes.Quote from: Allan on June 17, 2011, 06:58:33 AM Well, don't know what to tell. you. Even on an old XP system a True Image boot-time restore (of the system partition - similar size to W7) takes less than 15 minutes. It does seem like a long time. The Windows (PE recovery CD) tool is faster restoring from the same USB drive in the ratio of 135:40, I wonder if there is some issue with the Linux recovery CD that Macrium uses. I had to make a second boot CD using the Macrium "compatibility" mode because the first one I made booted (eventually) but did not recognise my USB mouse. Honestly don't know, but I'm betting it's not the norm.[Update] I tried Googling for "Macrium Reflect slow restore", and Google Suggest was ahead of me! This looks to be a known issue possibly to do with disk controller compatibility. One person in the Macrium forum reported 45 minutes/9 hours so I guess I was lucky. Okay, good to know.Macrium on my Win7 build both backs up and restores in less than 20 minutes... I have a spare HDD so i'll test the time DIFFERENCE for restore from an external and an internal and Post results...I also have my MONTHLY backup from last week...which i burn to DVD's...i'll include those results as well...Deafening silence... Is this the curse of Macrium? I don't believe this is a restore from external vs. restore from internal problem - the issue seems to be the writing of the imaged partition back to its original disk. This appears to be because the Macrium rescue CDs, both the PE one and the Linux ones, do not work properly with every (motherboard chipset) hard drive controller. Some people got over it by taking the Windows PE rescue CD and adding the Windows drivers for their chipset. I feel that since I already have an acceptable image method, I shall not be fooling around like that, ESPECIALLY since you have to buy the paid version to get the PE version of the rescue disk. |

Solve : my Yahoo Messenger ID has disappeared? |
Answer» Hi, I thought I had a very good protection: AVG (running in the background), MacAfee, If The McAfee you have running is anti-virus, then that is not recommended. You should only use 1 anti-virus. Also AVG has started to lag behind other anti-virus software. I recommend Avast or MSE. Ok, I can do that... but I still don't know how to solve my problem. Any idea?Try to sign in from another pc ! May be you have this issue only on your pc. If this is happening you could format it and try after, or try to find an RESTORE point when messenger was ok.Yahoo is the only one that can solve this i'm afraid.Quote but now my Messenger ID is not recognized. EVERY TIME I try to login, I am sent to my email ID If you mean forgotten passwords then see here -> http://www.amitbhawani.com/blog/how-to-recover-yahoo-mail-account-password/ Also when logging in to Yahoo messenger, there is a mail icon to click, open and directly logs in(if the feature was enabled previously or used) to that account. If you can access Ymess. and have same passwords using on logging Ymail, then you might be in luck. This is how I've set my Yahoo messenger account accessing my Yahoo mails. I remember one time I have forgotten my different password assigned on Ymail, but since it is set to access automatically on Ymess. when clicking an icon, I was still to view mails and retrieve the account by the secret question during registration(see above link). Quote from: umbra on June 18, 2011, 03:29:10 AM Kill me with stones I can't tell if you appreciate my Latin scholarship or not... Hello and thanks to all. My issue is not solved yet... after many emails EXCHANGED with Yahoo (before posting here), so I am hopeless about this way I reformatted my laptop a few weeks ago, too much job to backup EVERYTHING to do it again. With the risks of losing something anyway. But it was working afterwards. I know perfectly WELL my passwords, I have 2 different IDs (3 now) with 2 different pass. Of course, Jason, I did all that many times... they talk about PASSWORD recovery, not ID!!! And they send me to my mail ID. On the other hand, I think a hacker would be more interested in my bank accounts.... and I have no problem. I didn't try to connect from another PC, I am not in the US now... with some health issues. I would have to go to a cyber cafe. I am curious to know if I can connect from my desktop but I won't for a few months. I didn't do a restore, there is a program I would lose, I need to secure that beforeQuote I didn't try to connect from another PC, I am not in the US now... with some health issues. I know google and some other large portals have different sites in different countries...ah YES . It has been hard enough (they are stubborn), but I succeeded. And in any case, I used to login normally wherever I was!!! Actually, I am not really a beginner, I have worked all my life in computers... Solve : Random number generation. How easy?? |
Answer» Random number generation. So, please, is there a simple little trick to making a small set of pseudo random numbers? That is like asking if there is a simple little trick to understanding quantum mechanics or particle physics. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 19, 2011, 05:50:48 PM That is like asking if there is a simple little trick to understanding quantum mechanics or particle physics.Well.. how about just a simple bit of particle physics. How could I do RNG with particle physics.? Does that mean a pair of dice? Here's one way: http://spreadsheets.about.com/b/2009/09/23/random-numbers-in-excel-2007.htm A lot more from GOOGLE here: http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=random+number+generator&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggestTanks for the link. I made a set and saved it in a text fie. Now I can just use it when I need s set of random numbers.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 19, 2011, 06:48:52 PM Tanks for the link. I made a set and saved it in a text fie. Now I can just use it when I need s set of random numbers. why did you ask for this: Quote just the outline of a simple algorithm using some constants, addition, subtraction thin gs like that. Yeah, and modulus is OK.if it is clearly not what you needed?I would have like a algorithm. Failing that, just copy a table from a generator and use the table as a base for other sequences. An algorithm like this: X=((A*X)+B))mod C (given x has an initial value >0) depends on the constant A, B and C and the results vary widely So I gave up. What would you do? Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 20, 2011, 03:13:38 AM I would have like a algorithm. Failing that, just copy a table from a generator and use the table as a base for other sequences. You have to choose proper values for the constants for that to work properly, as illustrated in "Art of Computer Programming". The Assembly that is used in the book to illustrate the algorithm: Code: [Select] .DATA align 4 random_32 label dword dd 0ffffffffh ; any seed except 0 .CODE random proc push edx mov eax,[random_32] mov edx,0019660Dh mul edx add eax,3C6EF35Fh mov [random_32],eax pop edx ret random endp The book itself describes why the two specific constant values were chosen(a=19660Dh, c=3C6EF35Fh and M is 2^32) for the formula RND(n+1) = (a*RND(n) + c) mod M). This generates a 32-bit random number; if you want a 8-bit value you take the lower 8 bits, for a random 16-bit value, the lower 16-bits. (the lower bits have more entropy than the upper bits for reasons the book also explains). Quote What would you do?I would simply use the established Random number generator in whatever language I was using, seeded with the SYSTEM Timer, or, and if it's a game, salt that value with some data that is specific to user input, like the amount of time between button presses or something. GETTING an entropic seed is the tough issue, once you have a random number generator that doesn't fall into a sequence.Yes! It is all about the constants to start with! Thanks BC. That will keep me busy. Where did you get that book? Who wrote it? Is it a current work?Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 20, 2011, 03:48:14 AM Where did you get that book?I forget. I think it was given to me, I got a lot of old computer books from my high school Computer Science teacher years ago. Quote Who wrote it?Donald Knuth Quote Is it a current work? if you mean is it recent, well, yes and no; no in that it started in 1962, and yes in that he is still working on it.On Amazon, third edition, hard cover, three volumes, boxed set, about $150, new, in print. Solve : ms OFFICE WORD (2007) question? |

Answer» This thread is getting out of hand.
Apparently they can not help him with Windows 7. There may be third -peaty solution. But at the point The OP is LIKELY fed up and does not wish to pursue this.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 26, 2011, 12:12:07 PM This thread is getting out of hand. So, ATT cannot use any E-mail client at all? I see nowhere in the OP's posts where they even suggest they are creating a second account, or trying to use a second account. Also, they can send E-mail just fine, they just want to be able to send a word document as an E-mail. presumably- and again this is a presumption- they are using the webmail service to do this. Are you suggesting that it is impossible to access an AT&T E-mail using a standard mail client like outlook or Thunderbird? if that is the case it seems dreadfully silly for them to have either SMTP or POP3 on a network facing server, since those would only be used by such clients. http://support.microsoft.com/gp/outlook-express#tab0 http://www.tucows.com/preview/194179Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 26, 2011, 12:15:39 PM Are you suggesting that it is impossible to access an AT&T E-mail using a standard mail client like outlook or Thunderbird? if that is the case it seems dreadfully silly for them to have either SMTP or POP3 on a network facing server, since those would only be used by such clients. No, I am not saying that. But let's say if e-mail came in colors, we would HEAR this: Quote User: Can you help me with my email.Quote from: myming on June 26, 2011, 01:14:49 PM http://support.microsoft.com/gp/outlook-express#tab0You aren't using Outlook Express. You can't use it because you're using Windows 7 and Outlook Express does not work with Windows 7. So, why post links to web pages about Outlook Express? Quote from: SOYBEAN on June 26, 2011, 05:45:00 PM You aren't using Outlook Express. You can't use it because you're using Windows 7 and Outlook Express does not work with Windows 7. So, why post links to web pages about Outlook Express?Because the information from AT&T is for Outlook Express. The issue here is larger that the problems of just one user. The big companies are trying to destroy our freedom to choose our e-mail provider. Namely anyone like Incredimail, a small successful e-mail company that will lose marker share if the big guys push them aside. http://www.incredimail.com offers web mail, and POP3 and IMAP accounts. For reference: http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/tips/protocol.htmlGeek...just stop now. The thread isn't outta hand...the responses are. On top of the OP not illustrating the true issue. Let it go...patio, the OP asked a direct question. why can't i email a "word" file DIRECTLY to my email address ? answer: because that's the way ms set it up. it's not a nuclear fission question...Quote from: patio on June 26, 2011, 07:22:05 PM Geek...just stop now.Yes, I agree! Please lock this thread!Quote from: myming on June 26, 2011, 07:36:22 PM patio, That's also not the answer. I really have no idea where hotmail/MSN came into the equation, particularly since you use a ATT ISP account, and you can send mail just fine. The "problem" is that you use webmail (your actions with the smtp and pop3 account details makes it fairly clear you haven't set up a Mail client program) web-mail works through the browser and you cannot make your machine recognize a web-site as your E-mail application, you need to use an actual E-mail application. The problem is that they aren't using a E-mail client application, they are using web mail. And personally I don't thinkQuote from: BC_Programmer on June 26, 2011, 11:03:15 PM And personally I don't think Sometimes me too, but I wouldn't put it in print.Quote from: rthompson80819 on June 26, 2011, 11:15:47 PM Sometimes me too, but I wouldn't put it in print.heh... woops, that sentence ought to be "And personally I don't think that setting up a E-mail Client is something they are capable of doing with their current experience." |
