Solve : If You Had To Take Your PC In For Repairs....?

Answer»

I asked this in another thread, but it was a tangent, I wanted to ask in a separate thread.
Sometimes your PC needs something beyond internet help, it needs a live person to diagnose.

I think I have been burned using staples, so when I have a problem again, I don't ever want to be in this position.
What do you all recommend?

Why is it places like staples/best buy aren't that good?  As a consumer, that stinks because they are in every market and have easy name recognition!

If I have to look in the phone book, well one that varies city to city, and two, tough to know if they are good or bad.

Just so I and other like me do not get sucker punched by staples, any general criteria on how to find and where to go for a good in person PC repair (Too bad you all do not solicit yourselves for in person repairs!)You might think about getting a warranty when you buy.
But EVEN that can be a risk.
http://www.technibble.com/national-it-warranty-companies-the-good-and-the-bad/

BTW,  Staples is mentioned in the article.Without knowing any shops where you live (or even where you live for that matter, you don't need to share that here though) we couldn't really recommend a good place to go.

Finding a shop without a reliable recommendation is trial and error really. Usually, when you find a good shop, you'll know it. They'll do it right, they won't give you excuses that just aren't possible, and they'll stand by the work they do. They won't do things to prove you wrong, they'll do things to prove themselves right.

Look some up in the yellow pages, like I suggested. You don't have to pick one right off the bat, go around and just TALK to a few and get a feel for how they treat their customers. Be straightforward with them, tell them you're looking for a good computer place to rely on.

When you find somewhere you think might be pretty good, take your laptop in. Many places will diagnose the problem for little or no charge, and many have a "if we can't fix it, you don't pay" policy as well. Look for things like this as you talk to them. Many Communities have local PC User groups...some even do repairs for people that cannot do it themselves...
However they would be the ones to ask for recommendations on good shops. Quote from: bluecountry on September 30, 2011, 11:01:07 PM

Why is it places like staples/best buy aren't that good?

Although typically I don't really like anecdotes, I feel this is not something that was an isolated incident.

I have a friend who used to work at a Future Shop (pretty much the same sort of store as Best Buy). She knew what she was doing. I don't recall the exact occurence, and it was what she told me so it might have be a bit different from what really happened (but I trust her). Anyways, I'm sure you know about all that warranty stuff they are supposed to offer people. They had some "super" plan (or some ridiculous name) that was totally over the top in price. A customer asked about it, and she basically told them "If you are going to get a warranty, just get the regular one". Of course one of the Derps WORKING there heard this utter travesty (Customer service? WHAT? HOW DARE SHE!) and the bossman was not pleased, and she got a lecture about how she should always upsell everything, regardless of- and I quote- "how useless it is to them, because it's money for us". This is quite unfortunately a very common attitude with big box stores, and also some smaller shops. I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense. Even if you were to "lose money" on a repair or sale (By which I mean not squeeze every single cent out of them by making up stuff and trying to sell stupidly overpriced warranties that you can't even use half the time)- you would still gain a loyal customer if you do it right. As far as I'm concerned, if you lie or cheat somebody, they will find out eventually, and even if they didn't, it- well it's just not right, obviously. You are providing a service, and the customer pays for that service. The last thing you want to do is alienate customers which easily falsifiable nonsense, because they will just go elsewhere for that service. Whereas if you establish a repoire as somebody who they can trust to not cheat them for unnecessary money, they won't only become repeat customers, but when one of their friends or relatives has a problem, they might say "Well I know this one place run by a great guy, I get my computer fixed there all the time and he's great"- and word spreads.

It's service stores staffed by exactly those types of folks you want to find. I'm sure there are some big box stores that are like that, even up to their managers, but they are still under a lot of pressure from head office to PUSH the unnecessary crap, which puts salt in the tea (so to speak). With a smaller repair shop, it's repeat customers and word of mouth that they rely on to make a REASONABLE profit, not over-the-top upselling and lies. Now, to be fair, this doesn't mean that you can trust every single small operation; there are quite a few unscrupulous ones, so like Quaxo says you'll have to search around. You should be able to tell by their demeanour and conduct, at least hints of their true intentions. Something else I've noticed is that around here Computer Repair shops seem to appear rather often in all sorts of places but I've noticed it's only the ones I hear good things about that last very long, so you might want to see how long they've been in operation.BC_Programmer,
you finished September with the best post of the month.

Yeah, when I was in high school I worked in the computer department of a certain large office supply chain. We were required to upsell the extended warranty plans, and we got commission if the customer bought it. The bigger the package they bought, the bigger the commission.

Absolutely agree with you there BC. Basically, I treat my customers the way I would expect them to treat me if I were their customer. I make money, but I'm not in it for the money. I enjoy this line of work. No lies or trying to lose the customer in technical nonsense they won't understand.

Our department manager was pretty nuts about pushing that stuff, but our store manager wasn't. He pretty much let me do what I wanted because whatever I was doing, customers were actually coming to find him to compliment me. I remember there was this Nigerian guy who used to always come in with his entourage and he absolutely refused to be helped by anyone but me. Apparently he was a diplomat or something.

People would also come in and ask us to do service for them, but at that point in time, our chain didn't do in-house service. We were, however, allowed to do out-of-store service in our own time for the store's customers. I remember one lady wanted to give me $50 just to come over to her house and hook up her new computer she bought from us. I told her it was simple and tried to show her, but she insisted that I just come and do it, which I did. I told her she didn't need to pay me $50 for that, but she insisted on paying me for my time and no less than $50.  Good man!

Solve : maxtor external hard drive - recognaize by comp but not visible?

Answer»

Hi, I have Maxtor external drive, it has a Norton Ghost BackUp copy of my computer. Computer crashed - when I use Maxtor external disk it is not working.  so I connected it to my notebook. got mes: hardware found, installed, ready to use.... but I don't SEE the disk in "My computer? i uninstalled it in device manager and install again nothing worked. I need it as it has a Norton Ghost BackUp. And again all INFO: found installed, ready to use... but not visible??? I am confused.

Any suggestins?  Welcome to the CH forums. What caused your computer crash? Was the external connected to the computer at the time and turned on? Did you ever verify that the Norton Ghost data was actually there? truenorthHi all is not lost,

I think you need to assign a drive LETTER to the external drive which you do through Windows diskmanger. How exactly depends on your windows version so could you please post your windows version.

Lisa

With many versions of Ghost the drive will not be recognised until after you boot tot the Gost bootdisk.Maxtor was not connected -comp crashed as a boot errors, Yes i checked maxtor after back up it was there.
I don't  see Maxtor  in disk manager
I can see it in device manag as a usb device but i can not do anything there
Also if i want to disconnect it, it is in the list. but that's it.if you are using windows 7 you have to search for something as harddisk manager then you need to initialize it and after that assign a letter to it.
i didnt understand the problem totally so maybe this is an unusefull answer Quote from: andrew-z on October 03, 2011, 11:18:45 AM

Solve : PC wont recognise ext hard drive.?

Answer»

Hi,

Im having problems with an external HARD drive.

It was initially used with a PC.

Then it was used with a mac and now my windows vista laptop wont recognise it.

I tried HFS Explorer but that didnt work.

The Ext Drive shows up in Device Manager with an exclamation mark.
Under device status it says:
Quote

"Windows is uninstalling this device. (Code 21)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

Can anyone recommend some free software to render the drive usable for a PC again please!

What does it say in disk management?Apologies for my tardy reply.

The ext hard drive does not appear in disk management.

It now does not appear in Device manager at all.  I tihnk Windows carried out its threat and uninstalled it! Did you try placing it in another computer? What is the brand an d model and type of Hard drive?
Do you have a Desktop PC with both SATA and PATA(IDE) ports?

When Windows does not recognize an external device there are two general areas of concern:
1. ) The device or the connector is defective.
2. ) The device exhibits a signature unknown to Windows.

To help sort this out you can discount the HDD from its adapter and place it directly in a Desktop PC as a secondary device. For testing purposes, it may not be necessary to close the case. When you power up, get into the BIOS and see if the BIOS has recognized a new device.

Hope this  is of some help.

Cheers for the explanation Geek.

Im not at all technically mindede.  I plug in a device and assume it will work.

I will have to TAKE the HDD into work to plug it into a PC.  Everyone else seems to be using Macs.

Could you please tell me how I place the HDD directly as a secondary device in a  desktop PC?

Id like to try that before I have take the unit to a professional data retrieval expert.

Thanks for your time both of you.  I APPRECIATE your time answering my questions. It has been a very long time SINCE i also did this combination and some memories of it come to me. I guess my question before i get into that is did it ever work on both the PC and the Mac? It seems to me there is an issue to be dealt with in regards to what Apple O/S is being used when this sharing is desired. Different Apple O/S's require different formatting of the drive as i remember (which need to be done PRIOR to the sharing )and if memory serves correctly must be done on the PC before introducing the drive to the MAC. Also if i remember correctly there is a need to differentiate the MAC drive to Fat 32 as opposed to NTFS. I am hoping others that have done this will come on-board to assist as my recollections are vague on this. truenorth
P.S. Using a data recovery service will be very expensive hopefully some other alternative can be found. After reading the post by truenorth, I thin k he is right. The drive is ,OK. Windows just does not know how to deal withal drive that was used non a MAC. Find a program that will change the type and format to suit Windows. Do you have important data on the drive?
Two programs that will mount the drives formated HFS on a PC neither of which are free,

Paragon Disk Manger  http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hdm-personal/
Recover Data for Mac you can DOWNLOAD a trial from here  http://www.recoverdatatools.com/

Worth trailing to see what they can find  MQL, I undertook some research on your behalf to see if i could find something that related to my earlier reply to your post and found the following. It seems to provide an easy to understand guidance to help you with your issue.

Solve : New Fan Controller?

Answer»

Hello,

I recently installed a Thermal-Star Fan Controller/Card reader combo.

The controller can controll 4 fans via a 3 PIN connection, however all of my fans are all molex (only) with two wires (one red + one black) leading to the 4 pin molex head.

No PROBLEM I thought, and I simply bought 4 "4-pin molex to 3-pin" adapters.

Now the fans work connected through the controller, but I cannot control the speed of the fans via the controller. I have tested the controller with a 3 pin fan and it worked flawlessly.

I have read something about molex lacking a tachometer (YELLOW wire?) which is the cause. However, the fans are all molex, and I am not replacing them (they are all high performance LED). The fan controller in question does not have any molex connections, other than to power the LCD, LED's, and Card readers. I need these fans to be controllable. Is there some type of adapter that I can use? Did I get the wrong one? The one I have is formed like a 3 pin, but only has 2 wires, and two pins.

All advice appreciated.
Thanks,
DiatechYour computer won't recognize a case fan if it doesn't have the RPM sensor circuitry.

Solve : 3.5mm audio extension cable?

Answer»

My computer only has a sound port in the back, so I purchased an audio extension cable so that my headphones could reach. The problem is that the quality of the sound is really bad through the extension cable. It is also much quieter. I have to turn my volume up to full to hear anything. I tried the same cable on a different machine to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. So my QUESTION is: Do you think I got a defective one or do all audio extension cables reduce sound volume/quality like this? Should I go buy another? The plug of the extension cable might not be making good contact in the jack of the computer. With it plugged in and something play (keep the volume at a medium level) move the jack around a bit and see if that helps. Quote from: quaxo on October 05, 2011, 10:07:17 AM

The METAL of the jack should be clean and BRIGHT.

If you plug your headphones directly into the sound port, do you hear the sound at acceptable volume?

I actually found that I can make it sound better when the cable is only plugged half-way in.

If it doesn't work right with just the headphones, and adjusting the plug position helps, it's likely the jack is messed up.

In your first post you specifically said that the sound is bad when you use an extension, so I asked if the sound was also bad if you bypassed the extension and plugged the phones in directly. You appear to not understand the question.
There's only two answers to this problem.

Either your jack on the computer is bad, or you got the WRONG plug on the extension cable.  You never did fully answer if it worked OK when the headphones were plugged in without the extension cable. We don't know if he's using a line-out socket or a proper headphone output, and what make, brand and impedance his headphones are, and whether they have ever worked OK with that computer, and what kind of computer and sound card it is.  We also don't know if the extension is a proper stereo cable or not.

What brand BIOS? If Award then 1-1-3   means "CMOS read/write failure". Diagnosis: There is most likely a problem related to the motherboard. Recommendation: Troubleshoot the motherboard.

http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/mbsys/gen_Failure.htm

Try cleaning it as well, while you're at it change the thermal paste on the CPU.It is AMI BIOS.
tried to boot with bootable cd, still no result. The Intel 845 (Pentium 4) motherboard SERIES was introduced in September 2001 and used in mass MARKET machines such as Gateway etc. Thus machine is likely to be venerable. Maybe also check CMOS battery and - if recently assembled from parts check compatibility of parts, especially since 5 beeps is listed as CPU error.

Over the YEARS, I've been given several PC's that were apparently DEAD.
Once on the bench, I pulled the CMOS battery(s) and checked them with a digital volt meter.
In every case the battery was effectively Dead (checked out at less than 3 vdc.)

After letting the PC set, totally UN-Powered, for a half hour or so, I put in a new CMOS battery, plugged
in the power cord and the PC would boot up normally.  Then after resetting the time, date, etc, in
the bios, the PC would boot up and run normally as if nothing had ever happened.

If this only happened once, I'd probably not even mention it, but since I've seen it happen
several times, it's at least worth a mention.

If you had a PSU tester, I'd suggest testing the PSU for a missing voltage.

My own PC failed to boot recently and I pulled out the ram sticks and cleaned them and then the PC booted up normally.
So there are several things that can prevent a PC from booting up.

Good Luck,
The Shadow

Solve : Problems with Canon MF5700?

Answer»

I have 2 Canon MF 5700s.  Problem with one is that when it prints, there is a line about 2" in from left margin that messes up the characters going right down the PAGE.  If there is a BLANK spot on the page, it leaves a black mark on the page.  I thought it might be the cartridge. Have cleaned it off and same thing happens.  So, I tried the cartridge in the other printer, and no problem.  The problem only occurs when printing - not copying or when receiving faxes.  Any ideas? The troubleshooting manual doesn't address this issue and can't find anything online.  It is REALLY becoming a problem for me and I don't want to spend the money to get a new printer if I don't have to.
ThanksDoes printing from a different program change anything. Try OPENING a page of whatever in notepad and printing it.

Solve : My Graphics Card Problems?

Answer»

My Acer Aspire 5735Z has a Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics card, and while attempting to game upon my laptop I have experienced issuses with the graphics card, I have been on a game tester site to see the cause of my problem and it has said that my graphics card is failing on all games. However when I look in detail at the key components needed within my graphics card, my card covers them all, but yet it fails the overall test. Can anyone HELP or ADVISE me on a solution to this problem? The Intel GMA 4500MHD is not a dedicated graphics card.  It's not for gaming.  Read this:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMAEven the highest rated Intel chipset (Intel HD 3000) is useless for gaming, and the 4500 is ranked at about half of that that is. Intel chipsets are really only good for EVERYDAY computing.

If this were a DESKTOP, I'd recommend getting a good card put in, but given that the Aspire 5735Z is a laptop, you won't be able to change this. If you want to want to play games, I'd suggest building a decent desktop system. If you want to play them on the go for whatever reason, get a decent laptop with at least an Nvidia or ATI chipset in them, but you probably still won't get as good performance like you would with a desktop.

Bad connection between screen & motherboard (not keyboard).  The place to look is usually the hinge, the signals to the screen go through the hinge on notebooks.  I suspect netbooks are the same. Quote from: daveid on October 06, 2011, 06:56:47 AM

If the laptop is under warranty, send it in. If you open it, it may void the warranty for any further work you might need in the future.

If it's not under warranty, and you're comfortable opening the laptop, check the connection. As CC said, it's between the screen and the motherboard. ODDLY enough, the connection usually seems to be on the left hinge, but it might be on the right. (Most of the ones I've worked on had it on the left)

Check that the connector is securely connected to the motherboard and that NONE of the wires look worn through. Checking the wires themselves might be difficult depending on how they put the laptop together, as sometimes the wires are wrapping in something, sometimes they're a flat ribbon cable.

If they're wires, you might be able to find a good electronics repair or computer repair shop that can replace the bad wire. If it's a ribbon cable type, some of them are replaceable without changing the screen, and some aren't.Thanks guys, I may just live with it using my desktop monitor as its larger, I have LOOKED at the manual online and it seems you have to take everything out to disconnect the lcd before lifting off, If i do that and its not a loose connection but a damaged wire, i may struggle to get it repaired, where i live. You have saved me thinking its some virus or setting though, cheers

Solve : When i plug my headphone sound quality drops?

Is it crackling? Static? Signal loss?

Is the quality ok with just the laptop speakers?

With the headphones plugged in, try (very gently) rotating the plug in the jack. Does it crackle or change when you do this?

If you've tried more than one pair of headphones, it's possible the jack itself is damaged. This can HAPPEN over time. It can also happen if the plug its knocked too hard while plugged in, causing it to damage the jack. Certainly wouldn't be the first time I've seen that with a laptop.its like a bit crackling and for example when i listen to a song or play a GAME the voices are very low and the rest is much louderYou only answered the first question. You can buy laptop PSUs in electronics stores. They are commodity items.

I know I mean the PSU. Which powers the laptop from AC and also charges its battery at the same TIME. They come with cables with DC power jacks.

Okay, because whenever I talk of a laptop "PSU", I think of the DC input assembly, which would INCLUDE the charging circuit and battery input. What I mean by "DC input." I notice that my usage of the term is incorrect, as an assembly is not a unit.

It is hard to tell what you are trying to say. An assembly can be a unit and vice versa. Is English your native language?

It is my native language.

Maybe I should start off like this:

from http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/powersup.htm

In a desktop, all of those components are inside the PSU.
However in a laptop wouldn't the smoothing and regulating portion be inside the laptop so as to control input from the battery also (when its running on battery power only)?as you said your laptop is hanging ( which means its working )

i think this problem is from your windows try to re-install your windows in another partition or an other hard drive or wipe the previous one.

if it helps let me know Quote from: Transfusion on October 04, 2011, 07:29:07 PM

Yes, you are correct.
AC Power Adapter would be the correct terminology.
Your block diagram does not apply to Switched-mode power supply:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply
The AC Power Adapter is sometimes referred to by other names, so you have to figure out what is being referred to.
Laptops don't have a PSU, which is generally the terminology given to the Power Supply Unit in a desktop only.
Computer PSU's are switchers.

Solve : RAID question?

Answer»

I have a mother board that has 4 SATA connections. I have SATA 0 & 1 set with identical drives running RAID 1.
My question is If I purchase a new SATA drive to replace my IDE OS drive, can I connect it to SATA 3 or 4
and use it as a single drive not affiliated with raid?

My second question is SMART STATUS on the raid drives. I have  identical drives. brand size etc.
I beginning to think this was a bad idea. WHY. I get smart error of "SMART status for disk ST380013AS returned NOT OK."
The ST380013AS  is same on both drives. So how do I tell which one is at issue?
I ran smart test on both and they both pass, and say healthy. My smart failure HAPPENS about EVERY 3 days.
I hate to replace 2 drives, if only one is about to break.

Any help on these would be greatly appreciated. Is the RAID configured thru your motherboard bios or is it a Windows Software configured RAID? If motherboard configured, what is the make/model # of motherboard?

I had a similar SMART failure like you describe that doesnt show all the time and it was with 2 500GB Maxtor SATA drives that I was using also as RAID 1. Because I was running RAID 1 as exact mirror I ended up just running them until the one that failed died for good... such as it wouldnt spin up. In the end I found out that the early Maxtor 500GB SATA drives ran hot even idling, and the PROBLEM was that sandwiched together in the case there was a heat build up and that was the cause for the SMART failures which lead to the 1 of 2 drives crashing. I also would hear strange noises coming from my tower a day or so before that 1 drive died for good. Sounded like a metallic ping noise, which when I opened the case was coming from one of the 2 at the time that I wasnt able to distinguish. When that drive died it was burning hot as well as the other same drive next to it. Felt like you could roast an egg on it. Ended up decomissioning this 500GB drive as a vital drive and retired it to occasional external drive usage for moving large files between systems. And with the 500GB that roasted, Maxtor's warranty expired on it, but when Seagate bought out Maxtor, Seagates warranty then applied to Maxtor products with longer replacement warranty and so I shipped it back for a brand new Seagate Refurb 500GB that is almost 1/2 as thick as the other drive and runs cool and quiet.Question #1...Yes you can add additional HDD's outside of your RAID array and the will be seen as slave drives...
Question #2... Smart monitoring can be turned off in the BIOS if it AGGRAVATES you with those messages...but to be certain it's not s HDD DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. SITE an run it on both RAID HDD's...

BTW that Smart error has been known to show up in systems setup as you currently have...
Personally i would trust the HDD drive test results. Quote from: DaveLembke on October 07, 2011, 09:07:52 PM

Is the RAID configured thru your motherboard bios or is it a Windows Software configured RAID? If motherboard configured, what is the make/model # of motherboard?

It is on the mother board a GF615M-P31 less than 3 months old. I am also getting bad block errors under system event viewer.
SO I am pretty sure a drive is bad. Since I am in raid 1 I am assuming it writes and reads these blocks from the good drive.
I went out and got 2 new SATA drives a WDC and Seagate, just so a future error should have the ST or WDC in the message.

I decide to replace both since I am not sure how old they are.

Thanks for your info.

Great idea. I am replacing both since I see bad block errors also in system event viewer. Once I have them replaced I plan to run ms disk check first, run a format on them, I will try tio find Seagates disk check software and try it first.

My wifes computer has a small data disk that is running out of space so teh good drive is heading there.

Thnaks What is the reason you are running RAID-1?  If only for backup, there are better ways for home use.

Solve : Not starting?

Answer»

Hey,

So, I have a desktop that I built myself about a year ago. It was working just fine until summer when I tried to move it into a new case (dumb idea). I moved all the parts over being careful not to short anything. Anyways, as soon as it was done I booted up and normal functions worked just fine (internet, word, etc) but when I would try to play any games (specifically minecraft) the computer would run for 15 minutes or so and completely lose all power. There was no error message, just simply loss of power. After trying a whole bunch of things, including 2 new power supplies of different larger voltages (no success), trying new RAM, and taking out my video card and using the onboard mobo video processing, I came to the conclusion that it was the motherboard. So, a few weeks ago I sent that back to the manufacturer (everything is under warranty) and got it replaced. Today I reinstalled everything with the new motherboard and went to finally use the computer. Except now when I press the power button the computer starts for a split second and then completely turns off. I have tried a few different power supplies and no success. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with something like this, or if I just need to take it in somewhere. I'm really confused what could be wrong.

The COMPONENTS are:
Intel H55 Micro ATX Motherboard
GeForce GTS 250 Video Card
Intel i5 Dual-Core Clarkdale CPU
Ripjaw 4GB (2 sticks) RAM
Hitatchi Deskstar 1 TB Hardrive
Blu-Ray drive

Any help would be greatly appreciated.Might be a weak CMOS battery. Replace or reinsert after a couple of minutes. Diagnosing this type of behavior could be something else but you could start simply from the battery. When you moved everything, did you REMOVED the processor and/or CPU fan? If so, did you reapply thermal past before putting it back together. It's possible it is overheating.

Depending on the condition of the transfer between the processor and the CPU fan's heatsink, the computer can overheat in as LITTLE as 5-10 seconds from powering on and automatically shut off. Sometimes it won't overheat until you actually apply some load to the processor, such as you were having an issue with before.I tried the CMOS thing, took it out and put it back in - nothing. I don't have another to try right now, but I could get one tomorrow. I didn't reapply paste, didn't even think of it. You think it could overheat that QUICKLY? Right now it's starting for literally a second, right after I press the power button it dies. Another thing to note is that after it does that I press the power button again it won't start but if i unplug it and plug it back in it will do that same start and die thing before not starting again.

The protection from thermal events is caused by auto shutdown. You need another battery. Use also first onboard video and a stick of RAM alternately. Make sure the Heatsink and processor are locked properly.Whether or not it's the issue, you might want to reapply thermal paste. Clean off the old paste from the processor and COOLER and reapply. This will at least eliminate that as a possible culprit. Best to clean it off with just a bit of rubbing alcohol applied to a cloth.

Depending on the conditions, it doesn't take long to reach a shutdown temperature. I've worked on computers that didn't have thermal paste applied or the the paste "seal" was broken by removing the cooler from the CPU. Like I said, depending on the system, this can cause it to overheat when a decent load is applied, or in some cases in a few seconds from boot.

From what you're saying, where it's shutting down within a second of booting now, this might not be the case but at least we can eliminate this possibility.Ok, so progress. I did the thermal paste thing and the computer started. Now, I have the issue that I'm not getting pictures on my monitors. I have a 2 screens and it was set to multiple monitors until I had this issue. Any suggestions? So the computer is staying on now after applying paste?

If it is, disconnect one of the monitors, reseat everything and make sure each goes in firmly, check all the power cable connection and fan connections and make sure they're connected properly.

Solve : CPU temp?

Answer»

what temp should the CPU be.  Just put together my new box and CPU running at 85c.  Fans are running at full speed.  Its a Intel core 2 duo E840, 3 GHz.  Win7 64bit.85c is a bit hot for that cpu especially if at idle. Did you apply the thermal compound between CPU and heatsink, and is your heatsink the correct heatsink for the wattage rating of your CPU? Also does your case have adequate airflow. Such as if you run it with the side panel off of it and your temp comes down to normal 40c etc range you may need to add 1 or 2 fans to bring in cool air and exhaust the hot air. Also are you running native clock or overclocking? At least your CPU has thermal throttling, so that it wont china syndrome your socket and motherboard.

My first focus would be to make sure the heatsink is RATED HIGH enough to cool and that you dont have a dry CPU to heatsink flat causing the cpu to run hot.Exactly what temp is he READING?

As a very old tech, (30 years and counting) I have one rule of thumb when it comes to heating of components.

If you touch it and quickly draw back your hand and say #%&!!! (Ouch!!!!) then it's too hot. Eh?
Any time of any day, I can lay my digital heat sensor (index finger) on any component in my PC and it will feel no more than warm to the touch.  My favorite JOKE is "heck, my first wife ran hotter than my PC".

It sounds almost like there is NO heat sink grease between the CPU chip and its Heat Sink.

Just my own personal preference, but since the old 486 days, I've used nothing but AMD processors.  Typically, they will run a lot cooler than the Intel chips, cost less, draw less power and come with a heat-sink and fan more than adequate to keep them cool.
I just ran Speedfan on my own PC and my CPU temp, after about five hours of run-time, is just 100°F.  Only slightly above human body temperature.  If I lay my finger on top of the CPU heat-sink, it actually feels cool to the touch.  That's normal.

Good Luck!
The Shadow

I applied some compound and all seems OK.

a few years back when I purchased a CPU it came with fan and compound with instructions to apply compound.  The last 3 CPUs purchased have a fan but no compound.  And instructions do not say to apply compound.  The fans seem to have some kind of pre-applied substance on the surface where they contact the CPU.  Is compound still necessary?  I did do one previous without compound and it stays around 35c.  This one is a different story.

either way I guess I will always use compound. Quote from: wando red on October 09, 2011, 09:11:59 AM
And instructions do not say to apply compound.  The fans seem to have some kind of pre-applied substance on the surface where they contact the CPU.
Did that pre-applied substance have a clearly defined shape, which is typically square?  If so, it is probably a thermal pad, which serves the same purpose as thermal paste.  So, you could try using it or you could remove it and apply thermal compound.  But, don't simply put thermal compound on top of a thermal pad.  Pad vs. paste/compound is a topic of numerous forum discussions, like http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/267188-28-thermal-thermal-compound  You may find that discussion helpful.yes, it was a pad.  I had problems with the computer so I had to remove the CPU a number of times.  I guess the pad wore thin.  I did clean it off the fan and CPU before applying the compound.

thanks for you help everyone. Quote from: wando red on October 09, 2011, 12:18:56 PM
I guess the pad wore thin.

Those pads are meant to work ONE TIME. If the heatsink is removed you should clean all TRACES of the pad from the CPU and from the heatsink, and use fresh compound.

Solve : HDD Partioning?

Answer»

Is it possible to unpartion a HDD? If so, how would you go about it?Can you give some more information about what you want to achieve. You can delete, move, resize partitions using programs like Paragon Diskmanager. There are other programs some FREE. If you want to recover a drive after partitioning then I can recommend some programs.

LisaCheck this: How can I Unpartition my Hard Drive? When you acquire any HD Management (partitioning) software,  like Paragon or Easeus, there will be an option in the program to make a Recovery CD.  Always do that!
Then you can work with the software on multiple PC's without installing the software on them.
You can even repartition the HD on a PC that will not boot into Windows.

Having ONE extra partition on any computer is really a good idea and very handy for storage of PICTURES, MOVIES, etc., that you don't need on your C: drive all the time.

When someone GETS crazy and makes too many partitions on their drive, HD management can become a real nightmare.

Good Luck,

Solve : Should I try lowering my graphics card fan manually or leave it alone??

Answer»

I have an asus geforce gtx 560 dcii oc, and when i play mafia II it slowly but eventually starts to get really loud. So I was wondering if I could manually lower the fan speed so I don't have to hear it as much. Is it normal for a graphics card to get that loud? I have to put on earphones everytime I play otherwise I have to hear that fan going.

The only THING that worries me is that allowing the graphics card to heat up too much can CAUSE performance drops. Those fans...especially on graphics cards should never be throttled back...it's normally the hottest component in a PC...
Remove the card and take it to the store and fit a replacement fan for it...i suggest a ball-bearing one for longevity.Hi again Patio, and group.

I think any PC tech would agree that the fans on VIDEO cards are the pits (cheap crap) and will be the first ones to GO in any PC.

When the one on my own vid card started growling, I took it out, cleaned it, re-oiled it and put it back in.  A few months later I had to do it all over again.  Then it finally BIT the dirt and totally froze up.
I took it out and replaced it with a CPU fan from an old K6 chip.  I secured it to the top of the heatsink with HOT Glue.
The larger fan is very quiet and provides much better cooling than the stock fan.
Here's that video card with CPU fan.

So, take out the fan, clean it and the heatsink, really good and that may help.
When those little fans and their heatsinks get dirty, cooling suffers and the fans will have to run harder to COOL the GPU.

Good Luck Mate!
Howdy Shadow...good to seeya.TY everyone, I will take your advice as a future reference.

Solve : computer sometimes not starting?

Answer»

hi all.
i have a friend that has a 3 year old Acer Desktop Pc (not sure on the exact model) but it is sometimes having the problem where it starts to load up windows and crashes on the 'Sliding Bar' screen. Then after being forced to do a hard shut down, the computer comes completely dead. The computer doesn't even try to start up, no fans, nothing.
The only way that I can see to FIX this is to UNPLUG the power and a minute or two later after plugging it back in it springs back into life as if nothing ever happened. This is a random problem. I can't really see any pattern with it.
I have already installed a new PSU, in case that was faulty, and cleaned out the heat sink and re-applied thermal paste in case it was over heating (desperate stab in the dark) and shutting it self down.
I'm kinda at a loss here, can anyone think of anything it might be?
Thanks,
Luke
It could very well be the RAM-try each stick of RAM in each DIMM slot. Is it possible to boot other OSes(i.e. Ubuntu) from a USB drive/DVD? This happens randomly, as you say...Thanks for replying. Unfortunately he is at university at the moment, so I don't have access at the moment. But would failing RAM cause it to not respond to the power button all together? To be honest, I've never tried to start up a computer without it - I'm not sure on the outcome. Also, how would taking the power out help? Do you think that is just a coincidence?
I have the Windows Ram testing software to test it. I also have the 'Ultimate Boot CD' that tests all kind of stuff (not really had a chance yet..)
But it sounds like the RAM is a good possibility with it's age and price range. If these all come back okay, then I'll lend him some spare RAM for a while to see if fixes it.

LukeRun MemTest from the UBCD...let it run at least an hour...
Any errors at all and you have a bad stik of RAM...
If it doesn't even respond to the power button... 1) Bad PSU 2) Bad On/Off Switch 3) Bad PSU Cable (I once bought a REPLACEMENT for my PSU thinking it had fried. RMA'ed it because the replacement still wouldn't turn on. I was sitting there scratching my head when I suddenly thought of the power cable. Both PSUS are still as good as new.) 4) Dead Motherboard.

If you attempt to boot a computer without RAM, there will be beeps from the case speaker(If you have installed one. Please consult your motherboard manual for beep codes.) If you attempt to boot a computer without the CPU, it will not beep, fans will run, and need to hold the power button for around 10 seconds to turn the system off. If you attempt to boot your computer with a fan with a faulty RPM sensor, it will have symptoms identical to that of booting without a CPU. If you attempt to boot a computer without a PSU... well... good luck.

Solve : can you connect your computer to your TV??

I'm wondering about this...  NetFlix doesn't have everything I want to watch "instantly" so I've downloaded some old movies and stuff from torrents but would rather watch them on my TV's larger screen - if possible. I already tried burning the stuff to DVD-R DISCS (with both DVD Flick and one other program) but I guess my DVD player can't play home-made discs and I don't want to buy a new one.

I wonder if there's a way to connect my computer and TV so that anything I play in Windows Media Player on the computer would be viewable on the TV screen...Yes, most recent PCs have a way to drive another monitor. The refresh and scan have to match the TV set.  The sound is separate. Except on a HDMI interface. Dos you TV have HDMI?

Solve : laptop doesnt power on?

Hello
I have a HPG50-109NR laptop.  But for some reason the power doesn't turn on.  I plug in the AC adapter. It only LIGHTS right next to the ac adapter input on the laptop.  I tried pressing power button while having ac adapter pluged in as WELL as the battery.  I don't even hear the fan turning on.  No response even if I take out the battery.  Please help find out the find out the diagnosis of my laptop.  Thank you If you leave the laptop charging does the battery charge indicator LED ( light ) ever change from orange charging to green fully charged status? If it NEVER makes it to green it could be a bad battry that wont take a charge. If you charge it and it finally goes green, keep the as adapter plugged in and try to power up laptop.

Also, have you tried powering the laptop up with the ac adapter powering it with no battery present. ( a friend showed me that his laptop could actually run without battery direct from ac adapter, while I didnt think this was possible, on his model it worked.) He had a bad battery pulling down the ac adapter, so there wasnt enough power to power the laptop, but removing the bad battery load from the equation, it powered up when powered from ac adapter direct without battery installed.

Also any additional info would be helpful, such as if it was acting up prior to this final failure, was the battery life not so GREAT to show that the battery may have been on its way out, or was this laptop involved in an accidental situation of dropped, drink spilled on keyboard, ect.

Solve : Printer and printing problem?

Answer»

Hi Everybody

I have been trying to print a document and  I seem to be  having some problem printing.

 1. When I go through the steps and I hit print, nothing happens I have tried several times nothing happens. \
2. Then I chick on the PRINTER icon on the bottom tool bar on the desk top then a box COMES up comes which says
HP Officejet 4500 (name of my printer)  - use printrer off line   ( I have wireless printer connection)
3. Then inside the box a list of the number of times I tried to print the document.
4. Then on the bottom it will say 6 document(s) in queue.

What does this MEAN and what can I do to corect this problem and print the document.

Thank you for your help
Do you think the printer is damaged?
Did it work for several weeks and then one day quit?
Are you using a wireless router?
What changes did you recently make?
Which OS do you have?

Quick fix is to remove the printer, reboot and install all over again from the HP install CD. Don't SKIP any steps. Do it just like they say in the setup guide.

Solve : No Scan options?

Answer»

I have a HP C7180. It is set up on a wireless. I have never before used the scanner (no need until now). When I scan, it STATES that there is No Scan Options available. I tried doing it from my computer (HP Pavillion, XP) and still no luck. So I reloaded the software and it still didnt work. I ran a dx and it tells me that there is no software found, I went back and check the FOLDERS and the software is most definately on my computer.

Not sure what to do now. What is this software scanner, no scan options? Welcome to the WONDERFUL world of HP.

Reasonably acceptable hardware, but the worlds worse software.

That's why in my business, I always recommend "Epson".  Good hardware and GREAT software.

Good Luck,

My apologies, but I am not EXACTLY sure of what you are ASKING me. Are you asking what type of software the HP has? I don't know. It's a HP C7180 All In One Printer.

No scan Options: It thinks that there isn't a scan set up (no drivers) or not connected to the computer.

Solve : LITE-ON DVD SHD-16P1S is not recognised by XP SP3 as recorder?

Answer»

LITE-ON DVD SHD-16P1S is not recognised by XP SP3 as recorder. XP doesn't show Recording tab in DVD Drive Properties, although according to http://www.liteonit.com/global/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=103&Itemid=99&limit=1&limitstart=1 it is supposed to be recorder. MOREOVER, it's been OK before, untill from some point on this issue started.
Just in case, just upgraded firmware from GS03 to GS07 and tryed finding a better DRIVER from Inet with "The wizard could not finnd a better match..." result.

Would you please indicate what does make you believe it's not a recorder?
My sane arguments are: it'd been recording before and the link provided, plus I can clearly see the "DVD R/RW" writing on Freont panel. Quote from: gev on October 16, 2011, 06:43:46 AM

Solve : Desktop hard to boot after A/C power failure??

Answer»

ATX full tower, Celeron, Intel D845GVSR, XP professional X86, Intel integrated GPU.
It boots fine as long as I shut it down via 'Start > Shutdown/restart' ect.
But when the A/C power is interupted I have to go through a SERIES of --- 'power supply switch off / front panel power switch cycled on-off / wait several minutes / enable power supply switch / front panel power button on? / and presto! (And sometimes I have to go through this sequence several times before it boots.
Fact: (If I enable the switch on the power supply and hear the cooling fans come on, then it will not boot... But If i enable the power supply but subsequentially have to depress "ON" switch on the front cover before I hear the fans, it boots fine.

I also noticed the monitor gets no input signal while the PC is attempting to boot in this situation.
At the point when I finally get the machine to boot, I noticed that the VGA monitor input indicator light is the first sign of LIFE (green as opposed to yellow).
In other words; After a few attempts with this issue, I now know it's finally going to boot via watching the input LED indicator light on the monitor.
I'm thinking I may have a setting wrong in the BIOS but I don't know. What should I check to resolve this issue?
As always, thanks for any help,
Mike

From personal experience with a MSI 760G chipset motherboard:
The 350 W power supply was of some random Chinese brand-it did not have a switch on it. I had just finished blowing all the dust bunnies outta the case and plugged the power connector into the PSU. The computer automatically booted up without the use of the front panel power switch. I thought I was hallucinating and pressed the power button once. It shut down without issues. The computer worked throughout the day without issues, too. The next day I pulled the plug and put it back in to ensure that the computer was working as it should, and the computer powered up again by itself. I was just about to walk away when a MASSIVE stream of sparks came from one single voltage regulator near the CPU socket. I noticed that the motherboard was POSTing.   I immediately pulled the plug. *censored* it did not smell good. The motherboard wouldn't power up anymore with a new Hyundai PSU.
For the sake of curiosity, I got the motherboard back out again just now and put another Athlon II X2 240 in it. Its up and running now... but how long will it last?

Does the problem persist if you swap PSUs and reset CMOS?

My monitor's light changes from orange to green before the POST text appears.Check the BIOS for an option of what to do in case of a power failure. What is it set to? Should have an option to either remain off or reboot. Toggle it to whatever the other option is from what it is now, and SEE if that helps any.

I had an Intel D845GB, which I believe has the same BIOS, and it had the option. Quote from: Transfusion on October 15, 2011, 08:20:45 AM

I don't know yet. I'll swap the PSU and reset the CMOS tonight after my uncle gets through using the machine playing his POGO games (probably ~11pm CST US) I'll post the results then.

Yes this monitors indicator light does this - normally, but during the situation in question here, the green light never comes on. No text ever appears.
I will have more information on this issue later tonight.

I agree that the Intel D845GB should have the same, or similar BIOS configuration. I'll post the results later.
And to you quaxo, as always, thanks again!!!  Bingo!
In the BIOS, under 'power', it list - 'after power failure',  Options are; "stay off/last state/ power on".

This option was set to "last state". I changed that value to 'stay off' and saved changes.

I've now run 7 sequences of full start-up - then shut off supply power. So far the machine re-starts correctly.

I replaced it with the new one but I keep getting the "not recognised" message. I have tried resets and also the tip I found about PUTTING sticky tape over the contacts but still getting the E14 message. Can anyone help other than suggesting that I send it back, or that compatible cartridges don't work.

Solve : USB ports fail to work, now fails to boot up.?

Answer»

For about a year now, our desktop computer's USB ports have not worked. One DAY while my dad was using the computer, I connected my iPod to the computer. At that point, all USB ports failed to function. We had a wireless mouse, webcam, and flash drive plugged in. The iPod connector cord is never taken out of the computer.  All the USB hubs are fine according to the computer. I'd LOVE to give you specs, but this is where I encountered my second problem.

2 days ago, I finally decided to REPORT the problem (somewhere else). When I went to turn on my computer, it froze at the screen that says Windows XP with the little blue bars loading thing (I've heard it called a splash screen). And when I go to reboot it in any Safe Mode or Lask Known Good Config, it stops loading at this file:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys

The processor SIMPLY stops making sounds. I left the computer on overnight once and it still hadn't loaded past that file.
I will be starting a class that focuses on Repair and Support on Monday, Oct. 24 so when I get more or better info, I'll update this post.

Thanks for any help that you can provide.
What the 1st issue (USB) has in common with the 2nd issue (Mup.sys) is the power supply (PSU).  While it's hung, can you measure the voltages on a spare molex connector?  USB needs +5VDC.
http://www.helpwithpcs.com/courses/power-supply-basics-inc-pinouts.htm1. I don't know where I could obtain one of those, and I'm unsure of what to do if I should happen to get one...

1.  You'll probably learn how to use a multimeter in school.  You can get a cheap one for less than $5 from Harbor Freight.
2.  The same 5V feeds all USB ports.  USB devices need the 5V to function.  5V needs to be +4.75 V to +5.25 V

Solve : How to Increase The Speed of Your Laptop/Computer Without Hardware Upgrades?

Answer»

If you approach a computer company about an issue with a slow computer, its first response might be to urge you to purchase a new computer or to upgrade your hardware because the company wants to sell products. However, if your computer was once fast and now performs poorly, the problem is unlikely to be related to the hardware. In many cases, you can significantly increase the speed of your computer by making software changes that cost nothing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

        1

Examine your Windows Add/Remove Programs list for items that you do not use. A Windows program might install a background service to make the program open more quickly when you use it, or to check for updates periodically. These background services reduce the available system resources for programs that you actually use. Removing programs also creates more free space on the hard drive.
        2

Run a full anti-virus and anti-spyware scan of your computer to check for and remove MALICIOUS programs that run in the background. Malicious software can cause your computer to suddenly drop in performance.
        3

Run the Windows Disk Cleanup utility to search for and remove old files that Windows no longer needs. Some of the files that Disk Cleanup typically removes are software installation logs, the contents of the Recycle Bin, memory dumps from PAST operating system crashes and Internet Explorer temporary files. If you have never deleted these files manually, Disk Cleanup may recover a large portion of your computer's hard drive space.
        4

Defragment the hard drive after removing programs and unneeded files. Defragmenting moves the remaining DATA to the fastest part of the hard drive and eliminates split files and small blocks of empty space, allowing your computer to READ data from the hard drive more quickly. Do not defragment if your computer has a Solid-State Drive.
        5

Revert to an older software version if you experience slowness with only one program. Complicated programs -- such as video and picture EDITING software -- tend to consume large amounts of system resources. Your computer may barely meet the hardware requirements for a new version of a program, while the previous version might run at an acceptable speed.
        6

Connect a flash memory drive to your computer to enable ReadyBoost if you have a machine running Windows Vista or Windows 7. If you have a high-speed flash drive that you are not using for anything else, Windows can utilize it for temporary storage to make some programs open and close more quickly.
        7

Disable Windows Aero. Aero uses your computer's video card to enable enhanced graphics in the Windows desktop environment. Although Aero may look pretty, it may also slow down a computer that has marginal hardware.

My motherboard P8P67Le comes with onboard sound Realtek 97 drivers are installed but when my creative XiFi Titanium sound card is installed the Realtek drivers DON'T unistall and there seems to be a conflict. When I manually uninstall the Realtek drivers after a few days they install themselves again, DISABLING them seems to work is this correct? How are you uninstalling the sound drivers? Have you tried manually removing the sound drivers from device manager?Check the documentation for installing your sound card. Some onboard audio are disabled by DEFAULT once sound adapter is installed. Check first your BIOS settings before booting to Windows.I UNINSTALLED from the device manager tab and all is well for a few days but suddenly I get the windows is installing device drivers message, if I just disable the drivers the problem doesn't exist but the drivers have red exclamation marks over them in the device manager tab Have you tried uninstalling the Realtek HD Audio Manager from "ADD Or Remove Programs"?

EDIT: 666 Posts... *shivers* Quote

if I just disable the drivers the problem doesn't exist but the drivers have red exclamation marks over them in the device manager tab
If uninstalling the driver and Windows keeps detecting the onboard sound on boot up, then just use disable option. As LONG as the sound card is functioning and check BIOS option for onboard audio status. I don't quite get what you mean conflict.Nearly every board I've seen has the option to disable the onboard in the BIOS. Do that, and Windows will stop detecting it.

Solve : Is this the black death??

Answer»

I have a EMACHINE T6212. Windows XP.

My screen started to vibrate and I thought that I NEED to upgrade my onboard video card. I bought a new video card and insert it into the connector. But my monitor was still plugged to my onboard video card. I turned the machine on, and it was just like before my screen was vibrating. I realized that I forgot to plug my keyboard and I turned off the machine to plug the keyboard and restart again. That was the end of it. My monitor always showed that "No signal" and it is black. I cannot see anything. Only time I was able to see was when my monitor was plugged to my onboard(old) video card, I pressed R key when booting and, recovery option showed to ask me if I WANT to format the machine.

I WOULD really appreciate if anyone can help me with this problem. 'Vibrating screen' can be anything farm a bad monitor, bad CABLE, bad video card, bad PSU and so on. Try another cable and monitor. Or try both monitor and cable on another PC.
Do you have the documentation for  emachine T6212?

Solve : problems with installing new hard disk?

Answer»

I have taken delivery yesterday of a 320 GB IDE Hard Drive, replacement hard disk for a NEC Powermate VL5 Desktop PC and 2GB Ram as there was only 512MB.  I will list the specs below of the relevant bits.  The old hard drive wasnt very big and it crashed recently so we have bought a one large enough for what they need it for - mainly surfing the WWW and homework.

I created three back up disks when we bought the NEC and have used them a number of times in the past with no problems but with this new disk I am having problerms. as the replacement disk is an empty disk I used fdisk to create an active partition and format the drive which worked absolutely fine but when I tried to use the restore disks to recreate the PC back to factory state this wouldnt work and I get the following message -
Error while running glue part : 1-
Press any key to continue...
and when i press any key it says :
Error 5 in a box, glue parts error
Exit from OEMSETUP.
d:\>

The three disks that I created when I first bought the PC which are the main restore disks that contain XP Pro and all the programs, as this PC came without an XP disk.  The disks are being read fine and the disk checking utility within them confirmed that the disks are in good order.  I have a few choices within the menu for the NEC disk - full system restore to factory state or just install the windows software & Drivers as well as some other utility options such as formating the drive and Fdisk.  None of the install options are working and I really want to do a full restore as this is a replcement disk.

I think part of the problem may be that I used Fdisk to create an MS Dos partition and have set this as the active partition, so I think I may need to delete the MS-Dos partition and recreate the partition as a primary or extended logical partition.  I will try this when I am back in front of the pc unless this is not the right thing to do and someone can suggest a better alternative.

The bios is seeing both the new RAM and the new disk.

Remove and re-create the partition as a simple nTFS partition...
Any reason for having to use FDisk ? ?From what I could find with a google search, glue parts error 5 is format related.

What I would do is take that new hard drive and hook it up as a slave in a working computer. Then I'd fire up disk MANAGEMENT, delete those partitions that you've created, then create a new primary partition and format it as NTFS.

Once that was done, I'd put the drive into the NEC and try running the restore disks again. Quote from: patio on September 20, 2011, 09:50:47 AM

Hi Patio

I used f disk as the drive came empty and I dont have windows so I need to be able to restore from the recovery CD's.  I did just update my previus post which hasnt worked but what I wrote was

I have just spoken with the NEC tech support and the chappie there reckons that it looks like there is a problem with the hard disk being able to communicate with the CD drive as we did a Q:/reloadhs command whoich worked fine but we then got an error message saying that the c: couldnt read the media (sorry cant remember exactly what the message was).  We then did an abort as nothing happened with a retry and when I pressed abort it took me into the recovery cd menu.  when i selected the option to fully recover it looked like it was workoing but in reality nothing was happening - i had this issue the other evemning with the old hard disk.

I was using Fdisk as I dont know of another way of formatting the hard drive - any thoughts? Quote from: JJ 3000 on September 20, 2011, 10:24:33 AM

Hi jj3000

I dont think I have another suitable machine that I can use to hook this up as a slave but I did delete the partitions.

OK I just tried to do a c:\dir and I have the message invalid media type reading drive c - abort, retry, fail?

pressing F gives the message Fail on INT 24

OK so have just gone into the DOS prompt and at the c: I typed "convert c: /fs:ntfs" and go the same invalid media type .... ,message.

And I am now formatting the c: drive - so lets see if that works!!

Any other thoughts?

Hi JJ - yes its an XP machine.

I am running F disk from the command prompt but I can run it from within the recovery disk menu too.

The dos prompt is coming up if I cancel the recoery disks at boot up and then it takes me to the dos prompt. OK format finished and c:drive is now showing 305,168.25 MB free.

tried to but couldnt convert c: to ntfs from dos prompt.

Pressing abort takes you straight to the recovery program copying files to the hard drive routine but it did this once before on the old disk and nothing happened at all after about 3 hours.  Normally the files would be all copied over from all three disks in about an hour or so.

There is no blinking hard disk light and not a lot of NOISE from the CD or the disk so I am assuming this is again not backing up but I will give it enough time

Please be patient.  This will take some time it says  - not convinced.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful. Is there anyone on this forum that can help me please as I am now totally stuck.

it was clear after 2 hours last night that nothing was happening - I really dont know what to do now.

Any help pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease Just checked over all the data you have supplied great to get so much detail thank you. I would suggest the following. That  the nec doesn't support drives over 137GB not 48 bit LBA support. There fore you would need to jumper the seagate for LIMITED size of less than 137GB that model is able to do that. Also check the ide cable for drive 0 drive 1 plugs if this is the case then you need to jumper the drive for cable select. Once the drive is under 137GB the system restore disks you made will work. I hope this helps

What are you converting? FAT files, all in DOS mode? You need access to another machine using Disk manager utility included from the OS as suggested. Quote from: Lisa_maree on September 21, 2011, 08:59:46 PM

Lisa Thank you very much.  We are getting into area I have not ventured before so I may have to come back to you for a bit of assistance.  I think I am OK to find out which is the correct setting to limit the drive but can you expand a bit on how to check the cable please? Sorry to be a nuisance.

Thanks again.Hi Lisa - I just had another thought - if the maximum size of drive that this NEC supports is 137GB then can I create three partitions of say 2 x 137 & 1 x 46 which would then allow the full use of all of the 320GB disk I have?

I have just found a great report at http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/tp/137gb.pdf which is 27 pages of details about the 137 capacity barrier.

Can you suggest any other sources of detail to help me with the set up.

ALso I cant see anywhere on the drive that specifically allows me to set the jumpers to the 137 size - I have the set up guide for my drive http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/iguides/ata/100402370a.pdf and it details where to set the jumpers for various options but I cant see anythign that just refers to 137GB.

Am I missing something?

Solve : Brand new HP Envy 17 laptop with Intel Core i7?

Answer»

I am asking for some help because we just bought a new laptop and have not EVEN taken it out of the box! Well, just bought a month ago. I will be having some time soon to go through what I guess is a lengthy process of setting it up. Howeve, I have sooo many questions.
Like:   1. what is the first thing to do when TURNING it on?
          2. If it has Windows 7 Home Premium on it, is this a trial? how do I tell? and what relation is the Office Home and Student KEY I bought to this program... or is it Operationg System?
          3. We bought Norton 360 for Security program when should this be installed? is it self explainitory?
          4. What is this I read about making back up disks and reboot disks? Should I use CD or DVD? My system can burn either.
          5. Also what are they talking about when they mention I need to download drivers? These dont COME installed?
          6. We already have a HP 5 in one printer we used for our old laptop which was a really old computer. with this 64bit one do we need new drivers etc?
          7. I have both a transfer cable and a flash drive to get some of my old files and programs from the old Laptop (it is a Dell with Windows XP 98 or 2000 I think ) not sure if iTunes can be put on my flash drive with all my music (about 5G)
          8. The only other program we plan to load up right now is Photoshop CS5 and my Nikon camera software. So I guess that makes it about all... for now...
My apologies for such a long request. It is just that we are such beginners. I can use a computer pretty well, but have never started one up from scratch like this. We bought it from Frys.
I plan to write out a list of just what to do and we will follow it. Just need to make sure I get everything down and in order. Got a pretty penny in this Baby and the Photoshop.
Thank you in advance for any help! Bless you for answering a Beginner!

1. what is the first thing to do when turning it on?
The laptop will guide you through the initial setup. if it is anything like my laptop (which I bought Feb 2008) this will consist of selecting a language, and then waiting for it to complete installation.

Quote
2. If it has Windows 7 Home Premium on it, is this a trial? how do I tell? and what relation is the Office Home and Student key I bought to this program... or is it Operationg System?
Windows 7 is the operating system. It is not a trial. Generally these days systems do come with trial versions of Office. If you bought a key though, you will be able to enter that in Office when you start it.

Quote
3. We bought Norton 360 for Security program when should this be installed? is it self explainitory?
Typically these days systems come with some sort of basic protection pre-installed. My laptop came with Norton 360, for example. (Which I uninstalled but that is another matter)

Quote
4. What is this I read about making back up disks and reboot disks? Should I use CD or DVD? My system can burn either.
Personally I myself only back-up stuff I made; that is, losing it would mean I would need to recreate it myself. For programs, windows itself, etc, I don't bother. For your case the system will likely prompt you to create a "recovery" disc, and if it doesn't the option will be available in the start menu somewhere. I suggest you do so. The purpose of the disc (or discs, sometimes) is to allow you to revert the system back to it's initial state; Basically it's like running through the initial setup again. Don't forget to back-up stuff like your photoshop work, though. if you ask me that sort of thing is far more irreplacable.

Quote
5. Also what are they talking about when they mention I need to download drivers? These dont come installed?
Who mentions this?

Quote
6. We already have a HP 5 in one printer we used for our old laptop which was a really old computer. with this 64bit one do we need new drivers etc?
Depends. Windows might already have the drivers, it might not. A of printers do not have 64-bit drivers- at all, so you wouldn't be able to use the printer with the laptop at all in that case.

Morning i have a refurbished  Dell d520 laptop,i have had it about 12 months and it as been running fine.(although little slow ) i have a 512 memory card in.
a friend gave me a new 1gb card so i changed it over.into the            A dimm          slot under the keyboard. but i forgot to take out the battery.(DOPE.)when i turn it on i just get flashing lights for a while,i/e 30 secs then every thing go's off the power light comes on ok but the battery light just flashes about every 30secs.
i have tried it with the battery in/out also with the power adapter from electrics in/out.i have taken the battery out and unplugged from mains.then pressed the
on/off button for 20/30secs,still no joy have i made a mess of it.or is there a chance it can be revived .hope you can help.Maybe the 1GB memory module is the wrong type for your Dell Latitude D520 laptop.
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Latitude%20D520&Cat=RAMIf you put the 312MB MEm back in what happens?
I do not think you have enough ram. Or if you took it out, try putting it back in the ram the right way. If a computer does not boot sometimes you put in the hardware wrong.  Quote from: blindhelpfultech on September 25, 2011, 01:18:29 PM

He was putting in more RAM than he had before. You can't put them in the wrong way. They're slotted to prevent that.  computer COMMANDO /Johnny Alpha/blindhelptech/Quaxo.   thanks all of you for your answers quaxo is right i have changed from 512 memory to 1gb.
when i tried with the 512 back in i got nothing.as to it being the wrong type  i don't know NEVER thought of that.i will check to make sure it is comaptible.Ok let's be logical here your laptopnworked fine then you changed the ram it didnt work so you changed the ram back and now even that doesn't work maybe it's Electro static discharge hence why you should ground yourself before changing things and hold the power button for a while to discharge the laptop.was it just dimm or sodimm? correct me if I am wrong, but you don't use DIMM in laptops, you use it in desktops, did you find it easy to place the ram, or did you have to apply force? He managed to get the RAM in, so it was a SODIMM. They are drastically different shapes, I'm sure even my dog COULD tell the difference.

Chances are it just wasn't compatible with his system, or the module is bad.but now his other SODIMM doesn't work, so it is unlikely it is a bad module. Morning all well i have tried every thing been on other forums got loads of advice .(some i DONT understand)not that good on computers.other advice i followed but to no avail.by the way (luck of the Irish)i have downloaded the manual for my laptop and it clearly says;there are two slots for memory DIMM SLOT A/AND/ DIMM SLOT B.??  thought about a multimeter but not sure what to do with it.(keep the answers clean).also a dignostics card, what do you think.Morning to you all.Computer Commando/ Johnny Alpha/ BLindhelpfultech/ quaxo/ Canham??.  i am pleased to tell you,i have fixed my laptop . Quaxo was right i didn't have the memory stick in right.is was the right way but it wasn't seating right.i tried about 5 times ,but was afraid of pushing to hard .i tried one last time wiggled it about and pushed.it went in,tried the laptop and it lit up.so once again thanks to you all great job.

Solve : screen Acer Aspire 5920g?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I have an ACER Aspire 5920g.

2 questions:
The screen is broken, as in, externally is fine, but inside something broke and I have a BIG black stain on 1/3 of the screen.

Qs1: Can it be repaired or do I need to buy a new screen? What price am I looking at to buy or repair? Will reparations be 100% good or is there a chance they won't  .... in which case better off buying a new pc.

Q2: It has Vista, which I don't want! Will it run well with both W7 and XP ? Would you reccomend one of these two?
I'll use this pc fo general stuff like skipe, chorome, office, itunes, VLC,  and to play WOW... of course! xD

Thanks,
G.If you go to a professional, to get a new screen, it could cost you $200+ easily.
Doing the repair yourself, after you find and purchase a replacement screen, unless you've got some technical EXPERTISE, you could wind up with an expensive paper weight.

Have you tried it with an external MONITOR?  That would be the cheapest way out, if you use the little PC at home.

Just a thought.

I have a Compaq laptop with a dead keyboard, but the little PC still runs great with an external keyboard, so that's the way I run it.  I don't throw anything away, if it has an ounce of use left in it.

Good Luck,
 Hey,
thanks for reply and idea, which does make sense.
Unfortunately due to my lifestyle (travelling a LOT) it has to be a lap top...
Thanks again for replying.
Ps. looks like will cost me about 140 €, so about 200 dollars, you were right.

Solve : Partition Problem Unable to Shrink?

Answer»

Hello All
I am trying to create a 50GB partition on my HD.
However when using Windows 7 Disk Management its
telling me the following:
*****************************************
Total SIZE before shrink (MB)----------------476938
Size of available shrink space (MB)----------9594
Enter the amount of space to shrink (MB)----9594
Total size after shrink (MB)-----------------467377
*****************************************
When I try to change the amount I want to change the
amount in the enter line and hit enter nothing happens
The only amount that works is 9594.
Could some ONE help me with this problem.

Thanks
Ralph You can use other partition tools.
From my personal EXPERIENCE, partition tools may fail if there is a significant issue with the disk. Either an unusual LAYOUT of the files system, or a defect on the disk itself. I don't really know. I have come very close to losing all my data. I now make sure I and prepared to restore all if I wish to change my partitions.

One that works well almost always is:
EASEUS partition manager
http://www.easeus.com/

Another way is to just get a new drive. Create new partitions on the drive and move your stuff onto nit. Now you also have a backup. This is the conservative way. Thanks for the reply.
Looks like I may have to to try an out side app.

Solve : ASUS G60 HDMI No Signal/Invalid format?

Answer»

Hello,

   I have an ASUS G60JX-RBBX05, with Windows 7 64x [ INTEL i5-430M, 4GB DDR2, GeForce GTS360M 1GB GDDR5, 500GB, HDMI output ]
I plugged it with a VIZIO M260MV 26" LED LCD HDTV via HDMI.

The problem: No Signal, or sometimes Invalid Format.

I made some research, and I FOUND that CHANGING the resolution can help. But The resolution is already 1920*1080 (And the TV is compatible with this resolution)
The rate frequency is on 60Hz (compatible with the TV)
On the NVIDIA control panel> Multiple displays, the VIZIO M260MV is detected, and selected as the second display. (I tried Extended desktop, duplicate... didn't work)

The weird thing is... As opposite of many people, when windows is rebooting, there is no display on the TV... But, when I change the resolution of the M260MV display(From the computer), my desktop shows up on the TV for a second, and then disappear !

So, the only time the TV shows my desktop is during the second after I click on "APPLY" when changing the M260MV screen resolution (from Windows7 Screen resolution)

I play with the PS3 with the same TV and HDMI CABLE. So, when I plug the same HDMI cable on the PS3... the PS3 works fine... But when I plug it on the laptop... No Signal... or sometimes Invalid format... But again, the desktop shows up on the TV for one second after applying a screen TV resolution change from the computer ONLY.

Please help... I tried everything I could think of... Updated Windows and graphic card drivers... I don't know... Any help ?  Nobody?  You have a PS3, laptop and desktop using one LCD TV... The cable could be faulty. The No signal could also mean that the video being set is on the selection found on the TV itself. TV1, TV2/HDM1, HDMI2.
Quote

Have you tried using Single display or direct output only for TV INSTEAD?There is only one laptop and one ps3
when I said desktop, I meant the desktop of windows (of the laptop)

I tried a single display for the TV only.
And I checked all the TV selections (HDMI1, 2, 3 ...) But the HDMI1 is the one that respond for the PS3, and sometimes for the laptop.

Overclocking::

Overclocking can be really USEFUL at times, for my cpu i can raise it from 3.1 ghz to 3.7 and mabye more with a good cooling FAN,  that's a BIG improvement but yeh you're right, it's very risky. The best way to determine this is to weigh the performance gain vs. the cost of the components...Unfortunately OC generates heat, and like Patio says, heat is your enemy.

If you want more power just pay for more power.I run my Athlon II X2 240 ( which is OC'ed to 3.71 GHz stable from stock 2.81 GHz) and my Celeron E3200 (which is OC'ed to 3.30 GHz from stock 2.40 GHz) 24/7 [email protected] (in addition to a GT 430 on the Athlon rig and a GeForce 210 on the Celeron rig.) Temps are perfectly fine, they max out at about 60C (both the CPU and the GPU temps.) The chipset temps are around 36 C, which is perfectly fine. My DRAM speed on the Athlon rig is 1771.6 MHz, on the older Celeron rig, which only supports DDR2, is 930 MHz.

I overclock because I simply cannot afford many of the higher-end CPUs/motherboards/graphics cards.

ryukis215, your motherboard doesn't have that many features, for example it doesn't allow you to change the NB frequency and DRAM frequencies, all of which have great bearing on your CPU overclock. It doesn't allow you to change the voltage, which may be a good and a bad thing...

I would leave the SB overclock and PCI-E alone for now-until the CPU is done then you can start upping those
Okay. To start off, change your HT Link width to 16↑16↓. Then change your link speed to the minimum possible. I would leave the ACC options alone for now till we test for stability and because I doubt AMD has started cripping Phenom II X6s into Athlon II X4s. ACC can be a useful tool in increasing the stability of individual cores, though.

Now for the fun part! Increase your CPU Reference clock(that's what it says on your motherboard) all the way up until you cannot POST. When you find the maximum value that will still allow you to POST, boot into Windows and run IntelBurnTest on Standard, 10 loops. Most likely it will pass. If it doesn't, back down by 5 MHz on the Reference Clock and try again. You can try with Orthos which will GIVE you reports for indivual cores. If a single core fails, enable ACC and add 2% or so to the core that failed, and try again.

When you find an FSB value that is stable, begin upping the HT-Link Speed until you find the highest value that will still allow you to POST. Repeat IntelBurnTest, Standard, 5 loops this time.

I have noticed relatively minor FPS gains(like 5 FPS or so in Crysis 2, 1280x1024 No AA) when upping the PCI-E frequency-on my motherboard I can go up to 150 MHz, and have been running it like that ever since. I had a MSI 760G motherboard that allowed me to set the PCI-E freq. to 700 MHz , so I would rather go with a max of 200 MHz. I did set it to 700 MHz once, it posted, but I had a gut feeling if i booted into Windows 7 with its DirectX Aero effects, something would definitely go wrong. If you want to overclock your GPU, use EVGA Precision. I will leave that out for now. A good GPU stability test is FurMark.

A quick google search shows that people have had zero performance gains with overclocking the SB(I have never come across any motherboards which allow you to do that...), so I will leave that up to you.All I want to say is make sure you fully understand what you're doing before you do it. Make sure you case is ready to vent the extra heat and that your CPU cooler is SUFFICIENT to handle the extra heat as well. Thanks transfusion, ill try your tutorial *censored* soon as i fully understand what i'm doing, i don't really wana fry my pc.
quaxo My pc is made to let out heat, it nearly = to just  the hardware on its on no case + 2 fans on it ^^ i also have this little display screen on the tower that shows me all the deatils of the pc including the temprerature

EDIT: Transfusion, i can't seem to change the CPU Reference Clock, however under it theres an option to enable lots of different things like voltage etc,  i think i need to change them? You can't change the CPU Reference Clock? That's odd... Have you tried using the +/- buttons on your numeric keypad or the PageUp/PageDown buttons?

It's "busted".
A lot of us have worked long and hard to learn what we know, with years of experience and training. You, on the other hand, APPARENTLY haven't. While I have absolutely no problem giving someone free advice, free help, etc. I do have a problem with giving advice to someone who is attempting to run a "BUSINESS" based on that advice which they have no idea how to run. I think most of here would object to giving you free advice so that you can profit from your "clients" and make them think you know how to do something you don't.

If this is something you really want to do, go to school. Attend some classes. Get some books. Read. Practice. Learn.

Yes it is true to this extent: if you are USING DDR memory in dual-channel configuration mixing sticks of different speeds in the same bank can lead to lockups and instability. To be safe the RAM sticks in each bank should be identical to each other. It is not so much a question of making the system "perform better", more of making it perform properly, not risking crashes and BSODs.

I presume "bank" means two RAM slots.  And, in the case of dual-channel memory, they two slots that need to be paired together to get the benefit of dual-channel memory are usually color coded and they are not necessarily next to each other.  You MAY find this reference helpful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-channel_memory_architectureok tyvm

Solve : No sound on my Windoxs XP???

Answer»

Hi

I have not deleted or changed anything, the sound has just stopped working?

I have gone into my devices and deleted the sound/gamecontroller (sorry not exact name) as I've read about and rebooted the computer and it seemed to re-find them. But this has not worked?

What else can i try?

All CONNECTIONS are correct, all settings are correct (I've gone through them all, they are coorect as I'm aware)

Please help!

Thanks in advancePlease go to Device manager (start>run>devmgmt.msc>click OK) and tell US if there are any yellow exclamation marks beside any hardware.

by sound/gamecontroller I take it to mean "sound, video, and game controller." if you deleted your sound card driver I am not surprised it doesn't work anymore... It would help if you elaborated on what you deleted-I doubt you made the entire sound, video, game controller tab vanish from Control Panel and posted a link to the webpage from which you got the directions on altering the settings of the mentioned tab.No, no yellow exclamation marks.

I got the infomation from this site, it was from another post... and similar 'no sound' posts...

To elaborate; I went video/game controller '+' and opened each device and deleted each individual thing listed by going into their individual properties.. (Which im now regretting)

I unistalled 2/3 things (i foolishly cant remeber what), as they had the option to in their properties. The tabs and lists are all still there...

When i re-booted the pc seemed the install some of what i'd deleted?

I only did this after every other attempt to get sound I could think of.

Thanks for replying.

all I can think of is to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices and tell us what you see...

Please tell us what make and models of graphics cards, sound cards, and game controllers you have. I'm thinking the graphics card has an integrated sound module, and when you deleted the video settings you messed up the sound driver.

On a second note, where are you getting the video/game controller dialog? Control Panel only has separate sound and game controller options, and I wasn't thinking clearly when I posted sound, "video, and game controllers."In the previous instructions it just said delete 'sound/video/game controller' from the device manager folder... so i assumed that meant the whole thing... Oh no!

In the control panel;

There are no devices in the game controller folder

There are loads in the sounds and audio devices folder (all the ones {i think all} i deleted from the 'systems, device manager, componants, sound/video/game controller' folder...) Do you need me to list them?

The model of sound card is the 'Sound Blater Live! 24-bit', which is installed and in the settings.
Where i found this info, there was also 'Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device', i dont know what that is though. I afraid I dont know where to get the graphics card details. Quote from: wojuliette on AUGUST 09, 2011, 08:25:48 AM

Okay thanks-I do not need to know your graphics card details becuase I know it is a standalone sound card. All Modems on laptops include an audio driver for the DIAL tone-that is nothing to worry about.

You uninstalled all the drivers by "deleting" all the elements of the sound, video, and game controller tab in the device manager.

You can download your sound driver here:
http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=206&prodID=10315&prodName=Live!%2024-bit&subCatName=Live!&CatName=Sound+BlasterThank you so much. I've had a look and Im sorry but it's not clear to me which I need to download. All of them?

I downloaded a couple, and it did say my windows didnt support it and I needed to download windows vista? If i download windows vista would this affect all my other programs?

sorry, im not the best with computersI don't know what site that you tried top obtain your drivers from as the one offered by transfusion continues to display an error when i use Opera to try and access it. However here is a site that offers the drivers http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=206&prodID=10315&prodName=Live!%2024-bit&subCatName=Live!&CatName=Sound+Blaster
The one i believe you require is "7:12.00" about midway down. truenorthThanks. Its downloaded but i still dont have any sound?

Alos to verify, on the volume controls the options are either 'line in' off, or 'S/PDIF-In' off? Either off at the same time or either off with microphone?

Thanks Quote from: wojuliette on August 09, 2011, 12:03:23 PM

Its downloaded, but have you installed it, just to make sure?
both the line-in and s/pdif should be off for normal purposes.

On the windows master volume controls, is the "Wave" slider set to its max?Ok, have changed the volume settings now...and yes, i have installed it.

Still no sound though?
I had to try and simulate your problem on a spare test rig-after I deleted those tabs(by right-clicking>properties>properties tab>hit remove for everything you see.
I couldn't get sound to ever work again. I had to do a repair install with the windows setup disk to FIX the problem, which was the most efficient way-manually replacing the lost files would have taken forever.

Are any tabs still present under sound, video, and game controllers? The tabs are there listed when I click on the + of the 'Sound, video and game controllers', but when i open their properties theres either nothing or only one or 2 things are listed?

Should I re-install the windows?

What will this do to the pc, wipe it clean of everything?I would try system restore first: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084
This article describes how to use the System Restore tool to return your computer to a previous state. System Restore takes "snapshots" of critical system files and some program files and registry settings and stores this information as restore points. If your computer is not functioning correctly, you can use these restore points to return Windows XP to a previous state when your computer was functioning correctly. It can also change scripts, batch files, and other kinds of executable files on your computer.

If that fails try going to Start>Run>cmd>Click OK and type in "sfc /scannow" without the quotation marks. A description on what it does: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747

If both of the above (and all else) fails, you will have to perform a repair install, which will not cause you to lose any existing data but which will mess your preferences up.
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htmThere is also another possibility... the speakers have died? I have had this happen randomly to me !

Solve : Dell Precision 530 last RDRAM model 02/2002?

Answer»

I think it is a hardware problem, but it may not be (?)
I have a Dell 530 with dual 280 GHz Intel processors with an Adaptec SCSI controller (biggest effectively for 32 bit I believe) 4932 or 3932?, dual cheetah 15K scsi's, and 4GB RDRAM. XP Pro version 3.

Every few years it acts up by showing 3 yellow lights on diagnosis and won't start up every time. Usually the fix is a new SCSI harddrive cable (because of cable ends loosen up) or my spysweeper is about to run out.

I got a new cable and a new ($2 off amazon) spysweeper and it worked for about a month. Now the 3 yellow lights (which code out to a new bios, which I checked my is still the latest version, or a mobo - hope not). Here is the sequence of events on the screen:
1. Dell bios processes,
2. Windows first dos screen processes,
3. The Adaptec runs through all 15 slots of both sides of card I think and it finds the one I am using for Raid 0.
4. Then it STOPS with the cursor blinking_ _ _ _ _ _ _

Also, recently it started up better in the summer with cool AC blowing vs. cool days without AC blowing. The new SCSI cable is a China special and does not seem to fit TIGHT like they have in the past. Both of these factors may point to another cable from a more reputable (Country) manufacturer. But the sequence in where the start up screen stops may point to a new controller card. I just have one monitor, key board, and mouse hooked up to trouble shoot and it still does nothing. Please help.

I also have a Matrox AGP card, an MMS 4 way , and a dual video cards, so one of them may have gone out.

Not only do I not know how to trouble shoot the hardware, but now I have to find a way to get it started back up too.
Thanks!!Replace the cable....

Then TRY swapping in a new PSU...see if that changes anything...
