Solve : Intel Processor for Server and Workstations?

Answer» HELLO, I WANT to know, what is a good processor for a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and a processor for workstation running Windows 7? Finally, a MAC running Snow LEOPARD? thank you! I want intel!Almost anything.
Servers were running years ago on CPUs that most users would now throw away.
What performance level do you want?
Do y0ou have a giga bit connection?
Is this a business venture?
Is cost an issue?
Budget ? ? Quote from: patio on October 18, 2011, 05:31:28 PM
Budget ? ?
Very important question.
Quote
Lease-to-Own Server -- $49/month:
Intel Xeon E3-1230
8 GB RAM
1,000 GB HD
So that would mean anntel Xeon E3-1230 is a good basic server CPU.
But that might not be a good choice. That is why I added more questions. The Xeon is the best choice for certain applications. The OP needs to be more specific about objective.Hmmm, concerning cost, no major problem! I want a good intel processor so that it can run the Windows Server 2008 R2 without problem. And the workstations connected with it as well. On the workstations, I can put Intel i7 becaue some compouters will have VmWare.

Only the server I'm a bit hesited, whether to buy Xeon, or i7! The server will have 8GB RAM, internet speed 4MB!OK. The Xeon is a dead end. Go with the current Intel family of high-end CPUs  I only mentioned the Xeon because it is a cost-effective solution at the present time. But it is old technology.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xeon
Here is what Intel is doing now. and coming soon.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_future_Intel_microprocessors
Any advances in software nwill target the newer CPUs. So if you ever wamt tp upgrade yhour software, you want the new generation of Intel processors.
Yes, some i7 CPUs are part of the 'Xeon' family, but I meant the older Xeon.

Intel i7 is what you want. Good capital investment.

(But you can buy a USED old  XEON  dual-core server for $120, keep if for a year and throw it away.)

so I can put Intel i7 then? If yes, then its good! Thank you! Now, have to search a good MOTHERBOARD...

Solve : Video card compatibility?

Answer»

I got a HP Compaq dx2200 :
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/12454-12454-64287-321860-3328893-1844701.html

I must KNOW if a GeForce FX 5200 video card will work on it.

I tried to find some informations over the internet, but since I'm not that good in computers,I got very confused understanding AGP, PCI, PCI-X, PCI Express and all that stuff.

I've installed the video card in a slot that says PCIE16X and connected my display, but it STAYS black.Right now I'm using the onboard video card.
I've tried a search for hardware changes in Computer Management, but nothing new comes out.

If anyone could answer me if it should work or not this video card, thank you.http://www.nvidia.com/attach/56807?type=support&primitive=0
Read the above link as i believe it will answer your question. You will need to have DIRECTX9 on your computer. You will also need to uninstall your other video/graphics card (but don't do that UNTIL you have read the article) and met the required standards of the card for installation. When you did install it did you get a message "new hardware found"?Do you have the software disc for the card? A brief reading of the linked site seems to indicate it will work in your computer.truenorthhttp://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00625223/c00625223.pdf
p.14 -

Init Display First (VGA Setting)
Allows you to select the primary display device:
• PCI Slot
• OnChipVGA
• PCIEx

Choose PCIEx.  On some computers, if the monitor is connected prior to power-up, it will auto-detect & select the proper one for you.Well, I tried all three options.
I've set on each one of them, pluged my display to the video card and restart, but always black screen and the GREEN light blinking.
There is no "new hardware found" message either; even so, should I STILL try to install its drivers, and try again setting PCIEx, plug it in and restart?
And right now I will try to put it in the PCI slot maybe it will work.
If the same thing will happen, then I'll just consider it's broken and doesn't work anymore.
Thanks for your replies guys.
Quote from: doublin on October 19, 2011, 09:20:38 AM

...And right now I will try to put it in the PCI slot maybe it will work...
Nope, it will only fit in 1 type slot, PCI is not PCI-e.doublin, If not already too late STOP. If you try to insert the PCI-E card into a PCI slot the worst case scenario is that you will damage the slot thereby eliminating it future use for anything--also you may damage your card (which may NOT be damaged at this point). These 2 slot types are NOT interchangeable. Is the PCI-E card a new product with all it's software and documentation? Is it still under warranty? truenorthMake it fit.
Yea,I took a look inside there and didn't took me too long to see that it will never fit in the PCI slot
The card is not new.I had it dumped in a box along other old pc components for a long time. It's just that the video card that I was using now got fried, and I thought I could use this GeForce instead of the onboard video, untill I buy a better one.
Seems like it broke after all this time staying in there, scratching with all the other pieces.
Thanks to all of you!At least you have a backup video with the onboard.  The graphics card fans are the weak link.  Nowhere near the quality of a CPU fan.  Can't expect much of a $50 card.  Not sure if the expensive ones have better fans. One more thing.
On this website http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/12454-12454-64287-321860-3328893-1844701.html if you click Specifications and scroll down to Graphics and Input/Output devices you can see that it says:
Graphics cards
Integrated ATI graphics processor derived from the Radeon X300
ATI X300 PCIe x16 Graphics Controller
ATI Radeon X1300 256 MB DDR PCIe Graphics Controller

Does that means I can use only ATI video cards? :/No, you can use any (any brand) PCI-e graphics card.  All the models say:  Integrated ATI graphics processor derived from the Radeon X300.  The GPU's are ATI & nVidia.  While those 2 make their own cards, many manufacturers use the GPU's on their own cards.  I happen to have EVGA which uses nVidia GPU chips.

The main issue is the Power Supply (PSU), it's only rated at 250W, but read the nameplate for the +12VDC, since that's what the graphics card uses.  Most graphics cards will state their requirement for the 12V.  You're probably looking for a lower end card since that's all your PSU will support.  Depends on what you will be using the computer for.Does the card have a 4 pin white female slot on it ? ?
Does your PSU have a male 4 pin plug ? ?

If the card does have it then it's required for it to run...Never mind, solved the problem.I threw it back in the box and ordered a new one from Ebay.
Thanks all of you for your time.

Solve : New to Forums. Need help with hard drive.?

Answer»

Hello everyone.

I was wondering if I could get some help on deciding what hard drive to buy? I have a Gateway that only has a 298 GB hard drive.
As of right now my biggest issue with this tiny hard drive is that it takes ages for the computer to turn on, and ages for my game/my
boyfriends game to load. I play The Sims 3, and he plays Aion. Whenever we try to start our games the computer gets extremely loud
and makes this odd squealing noise from time to time. Now, I only have one computer supply store near me, which is Best Buy. I checked
their website and came up with these two hard drives..

Solve : Intel Processor 32 Bit, who knows a good one??

Answer»

Ok, I did post a QUESTION like this before, but now I'm in a real dilemma, I want an Intel Processor 32 Bit which can support Windows Server 2008 R2 and some workstations which will have VmWare installed, can you suggest me one? I have gone on Intel website, I'm seeing only 64 bits there, but I want one for 32 bits! Thank!Intel's 64-bit processors also execute 32-bit instructions. The last processor that was purely 32-bit to my understanding was the Pentium 4 (or MAYBE Pentium D)Can you give me a good Intel i3 or i5 to support my software I mentioned above? I have cheked all, but confused! Quote from: angel2011 on October 20, 2011, 01:48:11 PM

Can you give me a good Intel i3 or i5 to support my software I mentioned above? I have cheked all, but confused!

What motherboard is this going in? There are different socket types..
What is your budget?

What else is the PC going to be used for?You seemed to be satisfied with the replies in your other Topic...
Are you 2nd guessing the advice...or your choices ? ?

I guarantee if you provide WAY more details on what you want to accomplish here you will WIND up with more QUALIFIED responses...Well, I don't have problem with the budget. Socket, maybe 1366 is ok. The only problem here is I'm confused which to choose among these motherboards of i7 series on Intel website! I'm going to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on one machine and its 32bits. I will put only 4GB RAM as its 32bits. The rest of the machines will have Windows 7 and VmWare to run different operating systems like Linux. that's all! Problem, I'm confused which to choose! Well it's a bit clearer...
Just because you are going to use an i7 InTel CPU does not mean you are limited to only InTel MBoards...

Some i7 MBoard reviews

NewEgg's i7 MBoard choices...

Hope this helps...For the server, I'm buying this:

http://ark.intel.com/products/52213/Intel-Core-i7-2600-Processor-(8M-Cache-3_40-GHz)#compatibility

For the workstation, it's this:

http://ark.intel.com/products/53428/Intel-Core-i3-2130-Processor-(3M-Cache-3_40-GHz)

For motherboard:

What all of you think?

Solve : second CD drive?

Answer»

I have a pryon desk top with Windows 7. The tower appears to have two CD DRIVES but we have only used the top one (D:) to date. We have been unable to open the lower one. Help says there is only one hard disk drive. Does this mean that if we wish to make use of the SECOND drive we have to buy the hardware and instal it. And would we use a second drive for copying CDs and DVDs.It sounds like you may have one CD drive and beneath it is an empty drive BAY with a front cover on it.  Is there any writing on the front of the second, lower "drive"?

Look in the case and see if there is a lower disk drive with data and power cables.
Thank you. There is nothing on the front of the lower drive. We have no GREAT need for the second drive so it is not worthwhile to open up the case. The drive does not open when we press on the button on the side. Your comment just tends to confirm our belief that there is no hardware in the lower drive.Sounds like you have a case which has front flaps with buttons in front of the actual drives. If you are in Oz and you got it from Harvey Norman you can look at their web site and maybe tell us the model?
It is a Pyron PRY-i530SC. I have now asked Pyron Tech Support by email what is the second drive and how to use it. I will post the response. Thanks for providing guidance on what I should do. google of PRY-i530SC led me to the Pyron site which shows this desk top computer. If this is your computer and you or someone else has NOT added another optical drive then you only have one (as Salmon Trout has suspected). Read the specifications listed in the link to confirm for yourself.
http://www.pryon.com.au/solution/Solution_viewSolution.action;jsessionid=C6E542829DE05E750B1746F03209BAA1?id=2140&type=specs
truenorthA lot of cases nowadays, even on entry level machines, have the optical drive hidden behind a spring loaded hinged flap, sometimes called a STEALTH cover. On the front of the case there may be a button which extends inside and when you press it, it pushes the actual eject button on the drive itself. The drawer shoots out and makes the flap open. When the drawer goes back in the flap closes because of the spring. So some people may suppose that each flap hides a CD or DVD drive, however the flap is just part of the case.

I followed Salmon Trout's advice and prized both flaps open against the spring. This confirmed truenorth view that there is not a second DVD/CD drive in this Pyron. I had been to the Pyron site but missed the point in the Specifications about the second drive not being in the machine normally. I expect the Pyron Tech Support response will say this. This seems to close off the issue. Thanks for the help.

Solve : HELP new computer build?

Answer»

I put together a computer today and I find it funny that it doesn't turn on my monitor, no beeps  I cant see anything, the only THING that is working is the fans, hard drive ,dvd rom and the fan for the pentium other wise the video card s fan does not run so I know that is not responding .I tried connecting to the video card and also on the mb, I removed the video card and no video from the mb Is this a dead mb or am I missing SOMETHING?
barracuda seagate 1tb
nvidia 1024 mb ddr3
biostar t 41 HD express chipset
intel pent e 6700 775
4 gigs of memoryDo a few cold boots with the vid card removed and then retry the onboard...
You may have a dead vid card.Yep did that  I still dont get any video from mb  should I return?I would...and test the vid card on another PC to make sure that may NEED to be returned as well...Hi

Looking at the picture and manual for the motherboard there needs 3 connections from the power supply to the motherboard. Do you have a 4 pin molex connector plugged into by the pc1e slot as well as the square connector and the main power connector.

I hope this helps

Lisa
Ya you MIGHT not have all of the power connectors to the motherboard. If not the motherboard may be fried. Good to test all the components on a known working PC too. Might be having a shortage of power from the power supply.

At first my computer was working in top notch; however I had several issues with " Black/White/Gray/ etc etc color screens; I presume it was overheating since No virus, malware was present. With overheating as my first guess; I start to clean my CPU heat sink [ Fan ] . while using a Q-tip on the heat sink dust wasn't present. Therefore I had no issues with Color Screens. Everything was working fine for several months.

However a month ago I had no problem with my USB ports; then I had a " Unknown Device " Install. With that problem arise; I did several forum/solution search.

1 - Start in Safe Mood - Control Panel > Device Manager > Universal S bus > Unknown Device > Right Click Uninstall > Restart [ This didn't solve the issue; at desktop re-installing that "Unknown Device" was still present ] Next I decide to uninstall ALL USB > Windows reinstall. Problem no longer exist.

However two days ago; I was on my computer watching anime on youtube then my screen with Black. Power was present in my tower and my monitor was working. Since I couldn't do anything; I HOLD my power button for a few seconds [ 3 ] it shut down safely. Pushing the button once more; the light came on/ off / on / off / on.

Finally it decide to stay constant; however passing boot screen was an issue. I try a few times and the same results with power / off and on / + Cannot pass boot screen. So i was thinking could it be a corrupt software; let me system restore to an earlier point. While i was in the process of system restore; it frozen once more. I waited for 15 mins to see if it was move; but nothing. Restart once more to system restore to see I didn't any my "Points". Without any options left system factory was decided. I back up my data [ So it wasn't an issue ]

After system factory, everything was fine. My drivers + USB were working like brand new. However yesterday [ Oct 11 2011 ]; I had that problem once more " Unknown Device " Installing.

Software such as FireFox/AVG/CCleaner/Gooogle Chrome/Speccy/Open Office/Unknown Device ID 7.00/ were my only downloads.

Using Unknown Device

* If the full DeviceList notepad is needed, simply ask. *
* Using unknown device ID 7.00 I cannot find any problems listed [ No red lines of any device ]

________

Update [ Oct 15 ]

Methods I did

1 - Uninstall every USB > Reboot > Windows Install > Problem once more
2 - " " [ Safe Mood ] > Reboot > Problem once more

3 - Update Nvidia Drivers / USB Drives / Windows SP1> SP2
3 - Malware scan; No Malware / Any form of Virus /
4 - System Factory > Problem came up after a week days [ As i mention above ]
5 - DriverScan > All my USB [ Green Check ]
6 - Uninstall Display Adapter [ Nvidia Geforce 9100] > Problem exist

Try reinstalling the drivers for your motherboard chipset in addition to troubleshooting each individual USB device-I had the same problem on an MCP61-GeForce 7025 chipset motherboard.
Basically one day my Standard OpenHCD controller drivers were not working-but My Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controllers were. Several "Unknown Devices" appeared.Just to be safe; may I ask where exactly I need to uninstall the [ Motherboard chip set ] Better to be safe than sorry. I have to make sure it's the correct way of doing this.

In addition I will Device Man > USB Controller > Uninstall every sub division. Reboot and see what happens ?
You don't need to uninstall-you can just download the setup exe and do a repair install.
Yes you can uninstall every subdivision of the USB controller section. The drivers will be automatically reinstalled at reboot. That setup exe [ Meaning the motherboard chip set driver executable ]  Correct. Just making sure.

- PEGATRON CORPORATION VIOLET - Main Board.  I believe this is call Mobo as well. I'm looking for a offical site; however I cannot seem to find it.  Can you assist me in the right direction.Pegatron makes proprietary motherboards for HP-you might have more luck searching on the HP site for your computer model.Under the TITLE of " HP Pavilion p6116f Desktop PC " I found the page where the choices were listed

I cannot believe I forgot to mention this important detail; Sorry My USB Ports Under "Computer doesn't show" Only C/D Driver & DVD RW Drive.USB has Malfunctioned? Have you tried with different USB Mass STORAGE devices? Have you tried plugging it into the back of your computer? It could very well be that one of your USB devices is drawing too much power-try plugging all of your USB devices out of your computer, leaving only the USB drive in question plugged in. I tired back and front. However no form of USB are in use. I'm using a normal port for my mouse and keyboard.  What I was thinking if it's possible to temporary disable that one Bad USB [ Unknown Device ] If that is possible. Okay... do other USB devices work? Can you try the USB drive on another computer?
It is possible to disable it in device manager:
It's possible to do exactly what the image is saying.  I try my other USB sticks; Mirco SD / SD Cards etc. All of it works. Disable that unknown device

If this helps

Port_#0005.Hub_#0003Most likely it is your USB drive that is broken-have you tried to plug it into another computer?Sorry for the late reply. I had my finish my midterms. Regardless; I believe it's a hardware problem as several people mention in the forums. However I was thinking if it's possible to disable that one bad USB and not let windows auto install that single driver once more.

USB Flash Drive work PERFECTLY on other computers. I believe it's the actual physical hardware of the USB.

Solve : Overclocking i7 920?

Answer»

Hello all, I just have a QUICK QUESTION. Is it better to overclock a i7 920 to about 3.6 with water-cooling, or to buy a new processor? Also, If i do overclock it, does the memory frequency and voltage requirement for the memory change?I have a i7 930 overclocked to 4.0 and I have had no problems at all, but it's up to you to decide if you want to overclock. I say this because OVERCLOCKING can LEAD to damage if not done correctly and I don't think anybody would want to be blamed for giving you the wrong information.

Solve : VHS to DVD?

Answer»

I have a bunch of VCR tapes and would like to copy them to DVD. I picked up a Roxio easy VHS to DVD. I copied three movies and they didn't copy the sound. Any ONE know any thing about this stuff? It is all hooked up the way they said to hook it up. USB to the computer and the colored connectors to the same color on the out of the VCR. Then do what your told. The moves look good they just don't have any sound. Thank you much for your time.I also have one of these devices that I used to convert Sony Hi8 aka Super 8 to Digital format. Mine is called EasyCAP.

I ended up finding out that the issue was Windows 7 related. I installed the same software on Win XP box and everything worked correctly. When troubleshooting this it came up showing a digital capturing device, but audio support was missing. Driver also came up as not-signed. I ended up sticking with Windows XP for the conversion process and I was good to go without driver complaints etc. There is some loss of picture quality in mine. Not as crisp colors etc as the original playback of the hi8 tape, but acceptable for converting to DVD vs magnetic tape.

For my device the web is full of complaints like the one below, same issue I ran into, but I didnt attempt Vista driver on 7 :
Quote

Or lack thereof. With great effort, I managed to track down the Vista version of the driver, which worked passably on Windows 7. If you then track down some windows 7 compatible third-party software (currently using Media Player Classic to watch live, Debut VIDEO capture to record), you can view and record footage. Mind you, it s not very good footage. And the brightness/contrast is off, so colors bleed and are faded.

What OS are you using? And what is the exact model # of this device such as Roxio NP-640 etc?I can't find a number on the box. It is called,( easy roxio VHS to DVD ). I have gotten a hold of support and they are saying that they are WORKING on it. As of yet no help. Every thing works but I have no sound. The thing came with a DVD that has all the stuff on it that makes it work. I loaded it. Like I said it works yet no sound. I am using Windows XP. Thank you much for your time.As you are just embarking on this project i SHALL give you some of my impressions from having done hundreds of them. Firstly i am NOT happy with the picture quality particularly if you use a  compression format so as to get more than one vhs movie on the disc. I found the more (up to 4) you put on a disc the worse they all are. Whatever you do do NOT put paper labels on the disc. I bought 2 different brands of direct vhs to dvd player/recorders once i found i was not satisfied with the computer based process and was still not impressed with the picture quality. I gave up on doing it.truenorthInteresting discussion.  I have been using a product called DAZZLE since late 2007/early 2008 to convert our 'home videos' to DVD.  It is a small device which plugs into your VHS recorder/player and to your
computer via USB.  Follow the setup and run instructions and it works ... AS THEY SAY IN THE MARINES "WORKS FINE, LASTS A LONG TIME, DON'T RUST!"

Semper Fi ... & regardsDazzle is what I had first. It would copy to the hard drive but then you had to down load to a DVD from the hard drive. That would take twice as long. I have like 200 VHS tapes to copy to 200 DVDs. Still no word from support. I think I am going to take it back and try and get the MACHINE that will do. I was told that they make a machine that will do it. I have not found one yet. Any one here know of one or where to buy it?Btw, I have tons of VHS tapes so what should I do? I hate that VCRs are becoming extinct  I do have tons of VHS tapes like said. Wouldnt it take a lot of money to transfer them to DVD because you have to buy the DVDs. I do think there are a few VCRs with a DVD player with them.

Solve : New HDD Failure After Replacing Old One?

Answer»

I recently experienced some problems with my computer. After running Dell and Norton diagnostics both came back as hard drive failure. I purchased a new hard drive and had a professional install it. I installed the OS and drivers from the Dell disks that came with my computer. The computer was running fine after installing Microsoft Office, QuickBooks and Norton, downloading Java, Adobe and Blackboard IM. Windows then performed a 104 MB update. When the computer was re-started it started a Windows Configuration. It only made it to 30% and then froze for over an hour. I restarted the computer and Windows was able to restart and complete the configuration. Once I was logged in to my computer Windows Explorer continually froze or was super slow. I restarted the computer and it will not start normally. It mandates that I launch system repair and takes me to the System Recovery OPTIONS. From the next screen I am only able to restore computer using a system image created earlier. It is not recognizing my computer as having an operating system and I cannot restore from a system image because there is none. I ran the diagnostics TOOLS off of the Dell Driver and Utilities disk and from the Dell screen (F12). Both come back as telling me there is HDD errors.

I am wondering if the problem is really with my HDD or if it could be the motherboard or Windows itself.

My system is/has the following;

Windows 7
New Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Internal Desktop Hard Drive Bullk/OEM - WD1002FAEx

I am familar with computers but I don't know a lot about the inner workings of them so please feel free to simplify replies  It shouldn't be a problem with Windows, seeing as you have already done a fresh install. Would it be possible to take the drive out, slave it to another computer, and run this tool so we can eliminate your PC being the problem?

New systems, like the old on es, still requires backups. Especially before you do an update.
This is about XP SP2 to SP3,  but hoods true for any large update. Error recovery from a bad download is still a weakness in the Windows OS. MS recommends Backup before major update. This can even apply to Vista and Windows 7.

Solve : gateway desk top?

Answer»

I have a gateway DESK top that's only 3 years old. I have not used that pc in a while because of laptop. I started using the desk top again, I did a full system restore and everything WENT fine until the next morning when I tried to turn the pc on, when I pushed the power button it would not turn on, however as I pushed the power button at the same time the FANS would come on until I let go of the button. A friend told me to replace the battery inside the gateway on the mother board. I replaced it by unplugging everything then installing when I went to turn it on only the fans came on and they would remain on. Only way to turn off is by unplugging the pc.

Does anyone have any clues what it could be? I NEVER had this happen to me and I am not a computer guru. Its a gateway with windows vista and is only three years old. any advice would be great.Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnite...
You'll know right away if this is the issue.Does it beep when you turn it on? If so, then maybe you should try a different graphics card. If it has onboard graphics, then try that.

Well, if that link won't create some confusion, then nothing will.     The smorgasbord of wireless adapters.  Felt it to be QUITE appropriate due to the general nature of the inquiry--perhaps if the O/P finds his/her choice from the "smörgåsbord" we may need to be more SPECIFIC with our answer. However my answer after that pretty much fits them all--i doubt the choice will be one of the more elaborate ones anyway.truenorthThe original post is vauge, with very little information. But the question asked is 'how to install a wireless adapter' - Not which wireless adapter to "buy". THEREFORE that's why I asked the questions that I did.

Solve : My HP C4795 will not print files from certain programs/websites?

Answer»

Well basically the title explains it all. My printer will print files from any microsoft office program, but certain websites just won't cooperate with my printer. One example of the websites that my printer can't seem to work with is aplia.com and notehall.com, I use both for school and this issue is very frustrating as a result. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions of why this might be happening? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Everyone!I have run across websites with protected content that wont print. When you try to print it nothing happens, nothing even GOES to spooler. I wonder if the web site has this block on their content. Such as can you print from say YAHOO with no problems, and only these SITES are not printing?

There are ways to print protected sites, but I cant share how to BYPASS that here.Problem likely isnt your printer. Yes as read above there are no print websites. Could screen shot/snip and then copy paste into MS Word if its not a huge amount of stuff your printing off.

Solve : Multipal start ups followed by a flickering screen during bootup?

Answer»

So I press the power button and turn my pc on. the pc is on for all of 4 seconds when it shuts down and then turns back on. this happens three times followed by a startup success however when It goes to the "loading page" my screen goes black and I have to restart the pc. this all occurs about three to five times before I can actually successfully get on. on a side note Once its succesfull for the first time I can turn off the pc and tur it back on and It works like a charm. on some occasions the monitor will not even turn on. Id love it If someone could help me with this?

Windows vesta OBVIOUSLY. Dont know MUCH more then that. If it gets past the BIOS screens, use a working computer to get a linux live CD. Try booting the comp from that CD and see how it works.

If not, sounds like a Power Supply issue. Quote

Laptop or Desktop? Post as much details to your computer such as model/brand. Do you see any ACTIVITY(led lights) from the HD loading/reading while its on blackscreen? Any previous issues that might have cause this behavior or recent changes to hardware or software? One cause for random reboots is that the computers processor is getting too hot. To CHECK this, enter the computers bios during boot (usually by pressing Delete, F1 or F10 when the computer just starts) and there will be an option about the computers temperature (often under “PC Health”).

This should show you the CURRENT temperature of the computer and the emergency shutdown temperature. The emergency shutdown temperature is a safeguard for when your computer gets too hot it will shut itself down to prevent damage.

You can either raise the shutdown temperature or switch it off completely, however be warned that you may damage your computer (or the clients) if the computer gets too hot. If the temperature was causing the reboots then you should consider getting better cooling for the computer such as more powerful CPU fans and more case fans.

Solve : Startup failure pc?

Answer»

Hi,

My computer is having some Bios-beep-errors during startup. We hear two short beeps, a pause, eight beeps and than again two beeps. The Ami-Bios-Beep-list told me that it has something to do with the graphic adapter, so we've PUT another one in it and initially he started up, he did everything well. We shut him down again and when we tried to start up for a second time he started beeping again.

Does anyone has a clue? I'm not so into computer-hardware

FYI, greets.Did it beep the same code the second time?FRPM Our Archives...Doug: It beeped the same code after replacing the videocard yes.
Patio: I found that it had to do something with the Display MEMORY Read/Write test failure, so we replaced it by a new one and he's still beeping, I am out of solutions right now Try replacing the CMOS battery...Part # CR2032...available anywhere...

Has someone been mucking around with the BIOS settings ? ?We've already tried to replace the CMOS-battery, and the same story, two beeps, eight beeps, two beeps and still no screen?

But I think it's weird that with the new videocard we were able to start the whole thing one time and afterwards the same as mentionned before? It may be because the motherboard has static electricity. Unplug the power cord from the motherboard and all the cards you have inserted and wait a day. Then reconnect everything and see what happens.

Solve : Acer laptop Shuts Down after seconds?

Answer»

My Acer Aspire 7520 shuts down, loses power 5 - 25 seconds after powering on.
It started when I was playing a video game and the laptop suddenly shut down. I thought it was overheating, so I let it cool down. About an hour later I turned it on and it boot normally, but 45 min. later the laptop shut down again. Next time I tried, it turned off 20, 5 minutes, then 30, 20 seconds later. In those 20 s after pressing the power button no errors or BEEPS occur, just the Acer logo screen. I even get past Acer logo sometimes or go to Bios password prompt if i press F2, just before laptop powers off. This all happened in the course of a few hours, laptop was working fine beforehand, no overheating (think so cause games lagged when laptop was overheating previously). If I turn it on again, just after it powered off, the laptop shuts down in 7 seconds, as opposed to 25 seconds if i leave it alone for a while. Also, according to task manager CPU and RAM usage is normal when shut down happens.

Tried
Cleaning out the fan and the heat sink (wasn't that much dust).
Applying new silver thermal GREASE to CPU and GPU after removing the old one.
Powering on with only one RAM stick, then only the other.
Powering on without the battery, only on AC power. Then only with the battery in.
Powering on while putting pressure to the middle of the keyboard (read that this might pop the CMOS battery to it's slot if that's the problem).
Pressing the power button for 1 min.

There are a lot of people with Acer Aspire 7520 who have powering on and off in endless loop problem. Supposedly GPU reflow helps. I don't think my problem is the same, though because my laptop shuts down and doesn't restart. Also, my screen is working.
This is the only computer I have. Any help or tips would be GREATLY appreciated.Do you know how to remove the Hard Drive?
Can you get a find a 'kive' Linux CD that will run o  your laptop?
Or, just the Microsoft memory test CD.

Here is the plan:
Carefully remove the HDD from the laptop.
Power on with the test CD in the drive. If needed, you may have to set the option in the BIOS.

See how long the test will run. Or, if Linux, play a simple game for haft an hour.

The idea is to see if it was really the hard drive that was overheating. That is why you do it without the hard drive. If it runs OK without the hard drive, then it must be the hard drive.
I removed the hard drive, but laptop still shut down after a few seconds, even if i tried to enter bios.Remove other removable components. All RAM module(would beep normally) then power on. Wifi card then power on. Check the ventillation if air is coming to know if the fan is working before it shutsdown again. Any changes or improvement? Most likely the built-in chip for the video is fried so there is really less you could do at this point. No change after removal of Wifi card. Black screen (no Acer logo), no beeping, but laptop stays maybe 2 or 3 s longer than normal after removing both RAM modules. Fan is working. How can I determine if it's really my GPU that's at fault? Then I could try blasting it with a heat gun.Have you tried using AC adapter, no RAM modules and network card removed at the same time? Have you check that your CMOS battery is not drained or replacing it? The CPU might be your next step if all fails, while I've already stated the onboard chipset graphics might be DEAD or faulty. If you FACE the laptop, lift it up and on the left hand side towards the battery there is a vent (not the large vent that stretches across the front). This is where I tapped it and it worked. Have to say though I needed to give it more than just a gentle tap before it started working. Nevertheless I am amazed that this worked. I though it was going to be off to the repair workshop for a few weeks.

You can also try this.

Solve : Lenovo Thinkpad T61 Touchpad button definition and use?

Answer»

I recently acquired a lenovo thinkpad t61 running Windows Vista Business Edition.  I found that the UltraNav program was not installed so after some research I downloaded the correct version, but have not installed it yet because I would like some further information.

1.  There is the little RED stick which allows me to navigate up,down, left, right ... this works but DEPRESSING it as the documention indicates does not produce a mouse click.

2.  There are five buttons on the touchpad, three above the pad and two below.  I have searched high and low and cannot FIND any documentation on the proper use of these buttons.  The bottom two are the left and right mouse click buttons, that is axiomatic.  However the three buttons above the pad INDICATE left and right mouse click and a middle BUTTON ... NO KNOWN USE as yet.

3.  Can anyone provide me with a place to instruct me on how to use what seems to be a great tool?  I have never used or seen documentation on the use of a three button mouse but maybe that would be helpful if someone could point me in the right direction.  I tried Logitech but no luck so far.`

You would think that the operation of the device would be documented in the user guide or reference guide for the T61 both of which I have and neither of which describes the use of the five buttons.
I have played with it but all I can get is the normal PS/2 mouse functions.

I really cannot afford to lose any more hair at my age, so I hope someone and provide helpful information.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!Use an external mouse.

Solve : graphic card dying??

Answer»

Hello,

I ask you now as a last resort to a problem that I have found no solution to, this far.

First: I run Windows XP, SP2, on a Dell Latitude D830 (laptop), with its warranty expired of course some months ago. My graphic card is a Nvidia Quadro NVS 135M. Processor Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 or T7700 I don't remember.

Now, the problem: when I start my computer in normal mode, the moment when Windows should display the "welcome screen" (and at the same time, activate the graphic card and its driver), I get a beautiful random screen made of strips of different colors, that look very "computerized". But nothing else. If I look at it too long, sometimes the system stops and understands there is a problem. At first this problem took some time (like 5-20 minutes of normal operation, then gradually malfunctioning until it came to this state mentioned above of complete graphic bug), then it became instantaneous, then I opened the laptop and took off the huge pile of dust in the fan: the laptop worked again for some SESSIONS, totalizing several hours. But then the bug came back, and no update in the graphic card driver, no reopening to check if there was a problem with the thermal-cooling assembly or the heat sink compound (thermal paste), could get it right. Now my computer cannot start in normal mode, no matter how weird my ideas can be to get around it.

Now, the other modes: in safe mode, the computer works completely normally. In VGA mode: after 1 second of coloured stripes, I get a black screen, but windows keeps starting up, not noticing the screen does not respond anymore.

About the drivers update: at first, I tried the only update available for my graphic card, on the Dell site: I did it just before taking off the dust of my fan. The update corrected some little malfunction of the card (horizontal lines while playing videos with fast changing images), but it did not stop the bug from coming back after a while. Then I installed the update available on the Nvidia web site ("verde" driver, that was not on the dell site) in safe mode, but still, no way to start normally or in VGA mode. Then I updated the chipset driver, the BIOS, and some "netbook software" mentioned as "urgent" by Dell. None of it helped.

What I am suspecting, is some kind of "degenerative disease" of some component of the graphic card, that would be exacerbated by overheating. I can expect my computer to have been overheated slightly over a long period of time, while the fan was almost blocked by dust, and this overheating may have started the problem. But now it looks like the graphic card's maximal supported temperature gets lower and lower. Or maybe it has come to a point where it is no longer triggered by temperature. I cannot know for certain, since I have not run my computer in abnormally cold conditions yet.

There may be two outcomes to this situations: either the graphic card is already beyond any repair or workaround, and I just have to wait my first income to buy another one (which I would really avoid if I could: I am in a "hole with no income" right now, and It's been 3 months), or I can still do something with it, downclock the GPU or whatever, and still get something of that old thing. The problem is, I found no way to downclock the GPU, or lower any parameter of the graphic card, since every NVIDIA utility is disabled in safe mode, because the graphic card is disabled in safe mode! This is why I tried VGA mode, but it does not work: which means the problem is really with the fact of using the GPU, whatever the driver may be, and something in it is weak and maybe already broken.

So if anyone could help, or tell me about any similar story (with the final cause: too big graphic card on a small laptop - compatibility? Special care by a manufacturer for his computers to die completely for us consumers to buy new ones? Just no luck and should have cleaned my fan earlier?), it would help me out a lot: I am in a dead end right now...

Thanks! Quote

That sums it up. You tried drivers and it did not really resolve the issue. Dust and heat can cause permanent damage. On not.

Here is something you can try. Bit the laptop in your refrigerator for an hour. Cover it so that moisture will not enter. DO NOT let the laptop get down to freezing. About 50 F or 10 C is enough. Now turn the laptop back on and notice if there is a noticeable improvement in normal boot mode. If so, then yes, it is a over heating problem.
The logic to this is that it will take longer for the GPU to get to the critical temperature where is fails. This is not a cure. Your GPU has a thing internally called 'thermal runaway' and happens  after damage is done to the silicon. If it was a desktop, could try extra cooling, but not easy to do on a laptop.

Here is a video. This guy says it is easy. I don't believe it. But see for yourself.
How to remove and install a laptop graphics card. (Part 1)
Yes...Someone on the chat suggested that I should also use a better paste that the one I used when replacing the thermal cooling assembly (a silicone paste, white in colour: better use arctic paste?). I will do both of them at once (the paste and the fridge), and yes, maybe it will start in a better way. What I do not understand yet, is how a GPU can be damaged (irreversibly damaged) but still work sometimes. Is it a matter of the distance between conductors, that allow tunneling effect at higher temperatures, but not on lower ones, and the max temperature getting lower and lower?
So it seems this laptop is beyond durable workaround. It will teach me 2 lessons: first, get 5, not 3 years of warranty, and second: clean your fan more often!

Thanks for the reply, it puts words on it!

And by the way: I cannot replace only my graphic card, as it is integrated together with the motherboard, on the same card! And the GPU chip cannot be taken off on my motherboard from what I saw...maybe I'm wrong...Dell Latitude D830 motherboard is about $200 as a used or refurbished item. They have a limited warranty.

The CPU has built-in protection to prevent thermal runaway. Plus it has a fan. And you can replace the CPU.

The Graphics processor should not generate as MUCH heat.Dust will shorten the life. Dust impends air flow. Tao bad they don't put fans on laptop GPUs.

Maybe soon we will have mobile devices with better thermal control. Are you interested in  Thermal runaway? Some of the research gets kind of deep. Here is a sample of what they want to do:

Quote
Abstract— Preventing silicon chips from negative, even disas-
trous thermal hazards has become increasingly challenging these
days; considering thermal effects EARLY in the design cycle is thus
required. To achieve this, an accurate yet fast temperature model
together with an early-stage, thermally optimized, design flow
are needed. In this paper, we present an improved block-based
compact thermal model (HotSpot 4.0) that automatically achieves
good accuracy even under extreme conditions. The model has
been extensively validated with detailed finite-element thermal
simulation tools. We also show that properly modeling package
components and applying the right boundary conditions are cru-
cial to making full-chip thermal models like HotSpot accurately
resemble what happens in the real world. Ignoring or over-
simplifying package components can lead to inaccurate tempera-
ture estimations and potential thermal hazards that are costly to
fix in later designs stages. Such a full-chip and package thermal
model can then be incorporated into a thermally optimized design
flow where it acts as an efficient communication medium among
computer architects, circuit designers and package designers in
early microprocessor design stages, to achieve early and accurate
design decisions and also faster design convergence. For example,
the temperature-leakage interaction can be readily analyzed
within such a design flow to predict potential thermal hazards
such as thermal runaway. An example SoC design illustrates the
importance of adopting such a thermally optimized design flow
in early design stages.

Pretty heavy stuff.
EDIT: That link is hard to find. Here is another that sounds like your problem. Notice they focus on the CPU and ignore the other overheating issues, such as the GPU overheating.
http://www.howtofixcomputers.com/forums/dell/dell-inspiron-1525-overheating-296811.htmlAbout motherboard replacement, I came to the same conclusion: it costs far less than a new laptop, and if I use good thermal paste with regular cleaning of the fan, my laptop should last this time.

The problem is: I am afraid of compatibility issues. Like:
will my processor (T7500 core 2 duo) fit on every D 830 Motherboard?
will the GPU always be aligned with the cooling assembly I have?
Will it always support my WSXGA+ screen (1680x1050)?

On all the links I saw, the said nothing about such compatibility...And I cannot make dell tell me the dell part number of the motherboard I already have (this way I could be sure). Is there a spot on the motherboard, where this part number could be written? Or some hardware recognizing utility on the web?

Once I am sure, I buy the motherboard, the thermal paste, and then pray whatever computer god that all my guesses were right...

BTW thanks for the link :-)In my opinion you are throwing money away resuscitating a laptop for any reason and looking down the road for things to get better or stay the same is wishful thinking at best...

Others here may have differing opinions however...I have thought about that. Although this laptop is old, it has a lot of advantages, modern "cheap" laptops lack:
- a good screen with good resolution, good refresh time, very clear, you can see everything _ really everything _ no matter what angle you are looking at it from;
- not bad calculating power
- The Gpu, when working, can cope with 60 fps HD videos, works well with Cinema 4D and other stuff,
- the system is still XP and works well (I have some science computing software that would not work on Seven)
- I recently purchased a second battery
- and...I won't have enough money to buy a new good one, before 2 months! Because of a hole of 3 months with no income at all...and this computer is also kind of my workstation (I have a computer at work, but a PC: I like taking my data with me, like in the train as I travel every weekend, or at home, and I have no PC at home!)

And compared to all that, now I understood the problem that killed this laptop, for like 200$ I could refurbish it...if I find something trustful, why not!EDIT: after a useful lshw command on a live cd I have (pretty useful command, this is), I knew everything I needed to know. From my motherboard part number (OHN338: apparently Google too hears it almost for the first time, and never heard of resellers), to the true name of the enemy inside my PC: the G86M chip. By browsing about that I found a lot of complaints about overheating, even someone who had his motherboard changed 5 times because of that by dell (he had warranty of course), until I stumbled upon this:
story
don't know how reliable this is, but this might explain a lot...about precision laptops failing the same way etc...or maybe it is just today's laptops that always want a too big graphic performance for the cooling and thermal stress they can afford...So, maybe you're right about that motherboard stuff, maybe it's still too much money for what it is...I will keep searching just in case, and just to try out, but this is quite embarrassing...I did not want to buy a cheap computer just to link today and in 4 months time when I will have all the money needed to buy a true good laptop...But *censored* if I can live with no PC for all this time! Thanks for sharing your research. The reference implicates that you will have the same issue again with a replacement motherboard. It seems THET the designers did not pay enough attention to thermal design.

All Nvidia G84 and G86s are bad
Comment No word on MCPs yet

THE BURNING QUESTION on everyone's mind is what Nvidia parts are failing in the field? No GT200 jokes here, NV personnel are still quite sensitive about that, but our moles have told us about the bum GPUs.

The short story is that all the G84 and G86 parts are bad. Period. No exceptions. All of them, mobile and desktop, use the exact same ASIC, so expect them to go south in inordinate numbers as well. There are caveats however, and we will detail those in a bit.

Both of these ASICs have a rather terminal problem with unnamed substrate or bumping material, and it is heat related. If you ask Nvidia officially, you will get no reason why this happened, and no list of parts affected, we tried. Unofficially, they will blame everyone under the sun, and trash their suppliers in very colourful language.   ...

In my opinion you are throwing money away resuscitating a laptop for any reason and looking down the road for things to get better or stay the same is wishful thinking at best...

Others here may have differing opinions however...
If you can fix it for less than $100, then OK; otherwise, I agree with patio, new laptops have never been cheaper.

Solve : memory cards?

Answer»

:(Although the maximum memory for my DELL dimention 2400 is listed at 2gigs my machine will not boot up with any more than 1gig. I have the model compatible cards from Crucial , is there some changes needed in the bios I should be  making?. The O/S is windows XP  service pk 2.Do you actually have 2Gb of ram installed? Just because that's the maximum it will handle does not mean it has that much installed.I currently have 1 gig installed and  the computer  boots up normally but if try to add any more memory it willnot boot even though Dell says it will take 2gigs. System info recognises the 1 gig .So  i gather the computer up until your decision to increase to 2gb has up to now always had 1 gb and worked properly? That being so you do state " I have the model compatible cards from Crucial " in reference to what  i assume is the additional 1gb ram you PURCHASED. In the event that it is "compatible" as stated by Crucial still leaves the possibility that is NOT in fact the same MANUFACTURER and/or the exact same model as the original 1gb. That can be the basis of your problem. Also does the single "compatible " module WORK on it's own in the computer? If not EITHER it is NOT compatible or is defective. truenorth Dell says 2GB, but they also say modules up to 512MB & it has 2 slots.  Usually, this is because 512 was the largest available at the time.  In your case, it appears that 512 is a real limit.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/specs.htm
My Dell Dimension 2400 runs only on 2 512 sticks of RAM. But I would like to test it on a 1.5 or 2 GB if given the chance to acquire another 1 GB DDR RAM. They are quite expensive nowadays and hard to find. Since its just running on XP for light tasking, it runs better today compared before on a 512 module. Having the same computer model, I have seen threads online that have used a total of 2 GB max of RAM on that dell machine. Just a thought on how I added the other 512 stick. The lone 512 stick was on the 2nd slot and when I added the other 512, it makes a beep code/message for the changes or new hardware installed. Making it unbootable.  Removing/Clearing the CMOS battery and swapping places the two RAM on slots went smooth after.

Solve : Refresh rate and FPS I'm confused.?

Answer»

Hi, i have just purchased a 23" Asus 3D  monitor that has a refresh rate of 120hz and so is capable of running games well over 60fps with vysnc on. The problem I have with this is people keep telling me the human eye can only take in 60 fps in games and so I'm wondering what benefits there are for having a monitor with a refresh rate of 120hz? Please only answer this question if you know something about this subject because I am thinking of taken this monitor back and exchanging it for one with a refresh rate of 60hz. Does the 120hz maybe have something to do with the 3D?

Another thing - Can I play 3D blue ray movies once I have the shutter glasses and all and is it any good? Thanyou!! Quote from: Crafty on October 25, 2011, 08:26:38 AM

people keep telling me the human eye can only take in 60 fps in games

"The human eye cannot detect more than X FPS in games" is an inherently flawed statement as humans are not digital machines. The human brain is always on, always receiving input- it doesn't see "frames". Light HITS our eyes as a wave, and the information it carries is almost instantly transmitted to the Visual Cortex. The brain analyzes this data, focusing on CHANGES brought on by motion and fluctuations in intensity. Displacement is interpolated via motion blur and identical input is discarded to avoid extraneous processing. Basically, what we see is mostly dictated by "video post" filters that take place in the brain.

The “decoded” image is further analyzed by various parts of the brain, but the overall process — as complex as it is — is quite fast and versatile. Much faster than 60 fps.

The main reason for this myth starts with the older "can't see more than 30fps" myth, which exists because most video formats are 24-30 fps, so people assume that value was chosen based on some sort of opthamalogists recommendation or some nonsense. It wasn't. The reason films and movies get away with 24fps is simply because they have things like motion blur in-frame that assuage the brains sensation of motion. not always accurate, and in many cases purposely exaggerated to create a distinctive visual effect. The processing of such motion blur effects lowers the framerate even further, anyway, and that is noticable at an input-level. More  granularity helps to smooth out movement and the human eye has no upper limit to "Frames per second" simply because the human eye and Visual Cortex have no concept of a "frame".

That said, if the monitor is 3d the 120hz is probably to allow for 60hz display of 3d.BC_Programmer I can always rely on you to give a good explanation of how things work. Thankyou!!I have to say after reading this other link I'm confused again, so I would appreciate someone looking at the link and telling me what they think. I am just not sure when I am not using the 3D glasses, if I am then suppose to revert back to a refresh rate  of 60hz. Somewhere in the text it says leaving it at 120hz will confuse your brain and make you see a blurred image, is this true?

120Hz is used for the glasses. alternate frames are displayed on screen and synced to the glasses, which flip from left to right at at 120Hz, giving you an effective frequency of 60hz for a binocular image.

What other link?120 Hz monitors were originally designed for better viewing of fast action and SPORTING events to reduce motion blur, before 3D monitors came out.  I would think you could leave it on 120 Hz full time and not need to SWITCH back and forth.  You just have to try it and see what you like. THANKS to whoever tries to help :3Crystal Disk will run the cars flat out thru various tests...if it crashes it's most likely the card...

P.S. the info i read on the card said although a PCI-e card no external power is needed.Crystal Disk Info

Crystal Disk Mark 3.0.1
500W is more than sufficient for the GT 240.
"Suddenly things are like invert colors" Does this happen with your onboard GPU? Were you overclocking when the issue occurred? How much did you overclock from stock settings?

Can you run Furmark and do the 720p preset benchmark to stress-test your GPU?

"How do I make sure the processor is not used for graphics?" It depends on the game-some poorly optimized games like CRYSIS put a full load on both the CPU and the GPU. If your game supports nVidia PhysX you might WANT to set your graphics card to render PhysX effects, not your CPU.

Just a moment; do you connect the HDD while the system is already running?

I wondered that myself; if so, worst case is 1 dead hard drive and 2 dead motherboards...
as amritpalpathak post, PC can run with Live Disk.

many reasons here.

1- check your data cable (SATA/IDE) of HDD. un-plug data cable but plug power one. if your system start normally, the problem is your data cable. so, check your data cable and data port on Mother Board.
2- check power cable of HDD. try another power cable
3- plug data and power cable to HDD, but do not install it in the case. hold it in your hand carefully and from its side. when you power on, if it shuddering for seconds, your HDD may stile healthy.  if not, your HDD maybe dead.

Hi

What make and model of hard drive. Some models have over voltage protection that when it is activated shorts the rail  where the fault occurred. If the power supply is outputting the correct voltage you can remove the shorted component and then transfer the data to a new drive.

Hope to hear more information soon

He said that he has tried it on another computer. I presume "samppe haened" means same happened there. For that reason I'm guessing it's the HD if he didn't use the same cables on the other computer. As for the vote, I thought a Hd was a Hard disk, so I didn't vote.Meanwhile he's been abducted...

Solve : technology of CPU and video quality?

Answer»

Hello
It’s better that I ask my question in here.
I have a simple question,
Is the technology of CPU (MMX, SSE and ETC.) can effect on quality of video CONVERTING or DVD ripping?
What about TYPE of CPU (AMD, Intel, 32bit and 64 bit)?

Thanks
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/charts/index.php?pid=59,63,69&tid=8
A chart for the best-performing CPUs under the x264 BENCHMARK. Note that real-world performance may vary.
Intel has also included a new technology called "Quick Sync Video" on its latest Sandy Bridge processors(except some of the low-end Pentiums), which some claim are even faster than GPU encoding.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sandy-bridge-core-i7-2600k-core-i5-2500k,2833-5.html

As for the quality of the video, there will be no difference if you encode a video on a single-core CPU or on the latest hexacore CPU. You can select the resolution and bitrate of the video output in most video encoding programs, though. The technology level of the CPU and its clock speed will affect the speed of ripping, and higher quality will always take longer overall.

Converting a video, say a AVI, to a DVD format is a CPU intensive tasks. Given the quality,  size and frame rate do not change, the TIME to convert is a function of the CPU performance.. And yes, the MMX and other improvements affect the speed. Unless the application does not use them.

Very possible. HOWEVER, there are a number of other issues that can look LIKE hard drive failure. A type of virus can MAKE that happen. Don't ask why. I t happens. Hard to say if that is your problem. It is not obvious.

If you have another PC, you can download a program that you put onto a CD and it will boot your PC and look for that kind of problem.
Here is one site that offers it for free as an introduction to their products.  http://www.avira.com/en/for-home
Click on the tab that says 'free' and find instructions. Search for 'rescue' and find the page with the free download. Kind of a hassle finding it, but worth the effort. (Of course, the hope you get lost and end up buying something.)Thanks Guys!

Solve : updating my dell gx240 on a budget !?

My laptop was stolen back on 9/11/11 and that is was a great blow and i was without a computer for 1 1/2 month but lucky i found a organization that can help me because i'm " legally disabled and have limited income " so they discount pc from $75 down to $50 plus taxes and before i when to see it i ask the AGO and is was 1 to 2 yrs old but when i got there is was more like 6 to 7 yrs old but i was desperate so i got it and after a few day..........well is was a big mistake but i need a pc so now what can i do and i want t see what are my option because i want to see if i can " swap or upgrade component " and make in a low/mid range pc for under a budget

now i posted this QUESTION on dell forum and i know is a dinosaurs and they really didn't help me they NEVER gave me option of what to do with regard to swapping parts now i read that you can put a gx280 mobo w/ tray in this also and i want to see if that so to possible  because the case is in great shape and is got a cd-rom drive " don't care for dvd " and a 240watt power supply in this mini tower and might need upgrading but i can get them refurbished/used.......so let me know A dell gx240 for $50 was a good deal. Why do you want to upgrade it? It works. I also am handicapped and I used an old Dell GX280  for a long time until I got enough money to get sorting better. There is an old proverb; 'Beggars can't be Choosers.'

Dell gx240 specs:

It works just fine with Windows XP. You can upgrade the CPU, but, IMHO, that is the the best interment. Instead, get a larger Hard Drive and use the old one for backup.
Well i read that you can put in a gx280 w/ tray into a gx240 case and i was looking on ebay and i found some cheap as $25.00 but downside is memory is max at 1 gb maybe there is something from the gx optiplex lines that i also can put into this cases ? All i ask is that i was in a [email protected] SITUATION and i got this dinosaurs pc and i want to see would it be possible to updated it and how in a budget that all !

and since i got that out of the way i saw on ebay gx240 w/ 2.0gh P4 motherboard with tray for $25.00 with free shipping will this speed up my machine more from what i have which is a 1.7ghz P4 That's not bad.  The processor is minimally faster, but you may be able to add the Ram and an extra hdd.  Never turn your nose at a good parts machine.I was simply pointing out it's not neccessary to quote your posts in order to reply...

Solve : CPU heat sink to fit my motherboard?

Answer»

I have a GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard and I am searching for a good heat sink for my CPU.  My CONCERNS are the 3 heat sinks on the motherboard getting in the way of a larger CPU heat sink.  I have been playing BF3 and have noticed my CPU has hit as high as 90C which is causing me some concern.

Motherboard:

If ANYONE has any suggestions to good heat sinks that would work with my system please LET me know.  I am somewhat stumbling around in the dark and having trouble figuring out where to start since I have not dealt with aftermarket heat sinks before.Have you tested the temp with the side panel off so that you know its truely the CPU heatsink and not a heat build up ISSUE within the case itself? I have rarely seen where a heatsink cant keep a CPU cool and have it be due to the heatsink itself as the cause, unless the heatsink is under-rated for the wattage of the CPU and/or the CPU is running overclocked to cause an excessive amount of heat than in native clock. If you find that the temp runs cooler with the side panel off, then all you need to do is add positive or negative airflow in your case so that the CPU heatsink fan isnt recirculating the air creating a hot air pocket and causing the CPU temp to climb.

If you find that its truely a CPU heatsink issue and you have a properly bonded heatsink to CPU with heat exchanger pad or thermal compound, and you have issues with no room to place a monster heatsink, you could always go with liquid cooling in which you can have a nice flat heatsink with 2 tubes leading to it and the heat exchanger box mounted in a location to send it external to the case.i will reccomend the same heat sink im using with mp p4 3.40 ghz socket 775 cpu ... a thermaltake ruby orb it has a 12cm fan on the heat sink

Ill test that tonight, I currently have two 120mm front intake fans, a 120mm side panel intake fan, a rear 120mm exhaust, and a top 140mm exhaust.  If I turned the side 120mm into an exhaust do you think that would HELP?

Solve : Acer Aspire - Blank start up?

Answer»

Notebook
Acer Aspire 5810TZ
Operating System: WINDOWS XP
(I'll try to determine model number if it's required)

Hi.
I've had my Aspire (refurbished) for approximately a year. At one MOMENT, it worked fine perhaps a little slower than usual, but about 30 minutes later, it had trouble starting up. It sounds as it usually does when it starts, but the screen remains blank, and only the blue light next to the green battery light will come on. At one point, it would sometimes be a different one (usually the one PREVIOUSLY mentioned though), but it would STILL not properly start up.
I have done power checks on it, removed the battery and ran it via power cord alone, left it alone for a few days, tried to restart it, but nothing has HELPED. The warranty is out on it, and I don't have the money to take it in for repairs.
I was wondering what caused this and if it's possible to fix it (and for a decent, if no, price).
Thank you for your time.
Try removing/replacing the RAM Dimm; it has happened to me as well in an old Acer Travelmate. Apart from that, there's nothing else that I can think of,

Solve : Random Power Loss?

Answer»

Hey guys.

I have a desktop that I have consistently been having issues with. It is only about a YEAR old and I built it myself. I posted a few weeks ago how I was having issues getting the computer to start after replacing the motherboard. I had to REPLACE the motherboard because I thought it was the issue with the problem i'm still having, which is that my desktop will just randomly lose power. It seems to run different lengths of time before it dies each time too. For example, I hadn't had an issue with it for a few days until it crashed again today. It has nothing to do with what i'm RUNNING on the computer (last time it was just a word document, before it has had games and music running). I've been able to power it up and check the windows log and all it says is "computer unexpectedly lost power at xx:xx:xx on 10/31" or something along those lines. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.Do some simple test.
Get a diagnostic program  to run from a USB drive. (Or a Linux Distro.) Disconnect the Hard Drive. See how long the PC runs without the hard drive. This is to eliminate the HDD as the bad guy. But if the PC runs on and on without the hard drive sucking power, you know it was the hard drive that was causing the shut down.

Also, have you checked the CPU temperature recently?I haven't tried the Hard Drive thing, i'll give it a try later. I do not think it's a temperature though because I ran it all yesterday with no issues (when it was a little hotter) and it died within 30 minutes of starting up today (which is a COLD day). I can still check it out though.Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnite... Quote from: patio on October 31, 2011, 09:30:53 PM

Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnite...
That is a good idea.
But I still say the hard drive or the CD drive can cause that kind of thing.Oh I forgot to mention I have tried 3 PSU's and none of them fixed the issues. Solve : Computer Upgrading Concerns?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this board, so I apologize in advance if I'm doing anything wrong.

I currently have a rig that I plan to upgrade.
However, DUE to financial concerns, I can only upgrade my RAM and Graphics Card.

Here is my current setup:
Processor         Intel Core i5-750(2.66GHZ)
Memory            2 X Corsair 2GB XMS3 DDR3 1333MHZ (CM3X2G1333C9)
Motherboard    BLKD955WB P55 http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-board-dp55wb.html
Graphics Card  Inno3D GeForce GTS 250 http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gts_250_us.html
PSU                  Corsair CMPSU-620HX 620W

I plan to upgrade my video to NVIDIA's GTX570. http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gtx-570-us.html
And I plan to upgrade my RAM to either:
2 sticks of Corsair's 4GB Vengeance™ http://www.corsair.com/vengeance-4gb-single-module-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz4gx3m1a1600c9.html
2 sticks of Corsair's 4GB XMS3 http://www.corsair.com/memory/xms-classic/xms3-ddr3-memory/cmx4gx3m1a1333c9.html

Here are my concerns:
1. Can my PSU handle the additional load of the RAM and Video Card? The card lists at 550W min.
2. For my RAM I prefer the Vengeance but it has a 1600MHz frequency while my card only supports 1333 MHz.
I assuming it will go down to 1333 but will it rub smoothly? Is it advisable to get this? Or just go with XMS3?
3. Are my new parts at par with the board and the Processor, or will the latter cause bottlenecks?

Any input would be appreciated

(Sorry for the last post, was prematurly sent)What OS are you running?Sorry forgot to add that.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit.Ok, just checking. I just asked because if you're running something like XP, there's not point in more memory.

It all looks sound to me. I think you'll definitely notice a difference in graphics performance of games (should be able to do max settings without issues).

The power supply should be sufficient if you're running only one card. Thanks for the input quaxo.

Regarding this, any opinion?I don't know about Vengeance off the top of my head, but the XMS3 I bought for my machine is 1600. When I first put it in I forgot to set it to 1600 instead of 1333, but it worked normally for almost a week before I noticed the speed in the POST and changed it. Ahh ok. Thanks for the reply.

Sorry for not including that.
My goal to improve my graphics card to run the newer games more easily on the higher settings. Thanks for the previous responses.
One final question though.

So I'm going with 2x4 GB modules of corsair xms3 (cmx4gx3m1a1333c9).
What I'm wondering is if should mix it with my current ram (CM3X2G1333C9). They have the same manufacturer (corsair) but older, albeit the same, model.

Do you think this is a good idea? Are there any drawbacks?
Btw I'm using the stock/default settings on my rig. No part is overclocked. You won't have any problems mixing RAM in pairs.  I've never had a problem mixing singles, but the specs must be identical, if they are dual-channel.  If not, they won't function in that mode.
My laptop has 2 4GB modules from different manufacturers & it functions dual-channel.

You originally asked: "For my RAM I prefer the Vengeance but it has a 1600MHz frequency while my card only supports 1333 MHz.  I assuming it will go down to 1333 but will it rub smoothly? Is it advisable to get this? Or just go with XMS3? "
It should work at the lower frequency, but you need to verify this with the mobo manufacturer.  It's a possibility that the Vengeance RAM won't work at all.

Based on this:  http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/DP55WB/sb/CS-030682.htm
I would not get the XMS3, if it meets this criteria,
DIMM Capacity//Configuration//SDRAM Density//SDRAM Organization Front-side/Back-side//Number of SDRAM Devices
4096 MB  //    DS   //    2 Gbit  //    256 M x 8/256 M x 8   //   16
"DS” stands for double-sided memory modules (two rows of SDRAM). Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 04, 2011, 05:34:50 AM

Hi Computer_Commando,

Thanks a lot for the response.
I won't get vengeance anymore. My rig can't optimize it anyway I think.

I would just like to clarify something though, I should NOT get XMS3 if it meets the specified criteria?
Sorry, I'm just a little confused (since based on the link) the criteria you mentioned appears under "Supported DIMM configurations".

Reference: XMS3 — 4GB DDR3 Memory Module (CMX4GX3M1A1333C9)
Ok. So I have already completed the upgrade although it didn't go exactly as planned.

For the GPU, I didn't encounter any problems. Everything is working as expected.

However for the RAM, my initial plan of 2 x 4 GB XMS 3 didn't work (in addition to my initial 2 x 2 GB XMS Config).
Unfortunately, I didn't have the foresight to bring the manual of the MOBO at the time of the install to diagnose using the beep code.
I had it installed in a shop (too paranoid to do tinker with the hardware, still have to learn more).

We tried different configurations:
Config 1: 2 x 4 GB + 2 x 2 GB = Did not work.
Config 2: 2 x 4 GB = Did not work.
Config 3: 1 x 4 GB + 2 x 2 GB = Worked.
Config 4: 4 x 2 GB = Worked (My current config).

What I'm wondering is why didn't the first 2 configurations work?
I'm a little stumped. The board specs indicated that it can support 16 GB of memory but could not handle 8 GBs?
I tried scanning through the manual and the specs of the memory but could not find the reason why it didn't work.

Anyone has any ideas? Just something to start my search on. I don't know where to start.
I can't change my current configuration anymore but I want to know the cause of the problem so I don't encounter it again in the future.
(I plan on making a new rig in 2 years)

1.  You did not read the specs carefully in the link I provided previously.  The above configurations do not have enough information to determine why they won't work.  Intel is very specific about the type of Supported DIMM:  http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/DP55WB/sb/CS-030682.htm
Note the organization of the chips on the DIMMs & the organization of the devices noted in the 1ST table on the link provided.
2.  I have not seen these specific requirements since my 10 year old Pentium III with SDRAM requirements for high density vs low density.  By the time you're ready for a new rig, you probably won't have the same issue.  DDR3 will be mature by then.

Are you referring to the density? The density of the SDRAM Density is incompatible with the board?
Is this information generally available on a vendor's website?
I tried searching Corsair's site but I couldn't extract this info.  Yes, it's a density issue, appears to be not compatible.  I've never seen memory manufacturer's specify this.  Most motherboards are DESIGNED so chip density is not an issue.  Don't know why Intel did not take this into consideration.  They probably outsourced the design or gave it to an in-house designer who was a new hire & didn't fully understand.  They were probably testing RAM compatibility & then found out, therefore, the chart noted.  Only some at Intel would know & you will never find out who & they will never admit their error.

Solve : Laptop Using wrong Video Card?

Answer»

I am currently using a very expensive HP laptop with 6G RAM, 2.0 GHZ i7 CPU, and a Radeon (TM) HD 6490M graphics card. But for some reason, when I do a system scan of my computer, all it says is that I am using the integrated HD graphics, and thus my games are hardly running. When I go into my device manager, under the Display adapters it says that I have the HD 6490 as well as the Radeon HD Graphics. I also tried to go onto the Radeon site and update the drives but it says its  not compatable and I need to contact HP to get the mobile versions of the DRIVERS. Can someone please help me? I payed $1800 for this laptop so I could run games on it, but I can hardly run anything, including older games.Maybe its too late but I would have invest on a desktop for gaming for that price. Anyway, is there a switch to toggle on graphics or does laptop automatically recognizing the video effects? As looking on a specific dv6t HP model here http://www.mylaptopreview.com/Laptops/HP/2011/0617/HP-Pavilion-dv6t.html
For graphics and performance quote :
Quote

The dv6t has switchable graphics, featuring both an integrated INTEL HD   3000 Graphics chip and a discrete AMD Radeon HD 6490M Graphics chip with   1GB of dedicated memory. While not as useful as Nvidia's Optimus   technology, which automatically switches between GPUs based on   individual applications, the dv6t can toggle between the cards as a   power-saving measure, asking users if they'd like to switch to the AMD   card when the dv6t isn't plugged in. Also unlike notebooks with Nvidia   Optimus, the screen blinks a few times during the transition.

I was in need of a laptop for my current schooling situation, otherwise I would have gone with a laptop. The laptop is a dv6t I believe, but I have never received a message asking if I wanted to switch to the other card. Would you know where I could find the setting to manually change it?http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/siteHome?cc=us&lc=en

Solve : Hardware problem..?

Answer»

okay, so first off i had a poor single core pc (i know) with a 120gb HDD that has windows xp32 bit and 512mb ram, now i've had some money, i have gone out bought basically bought a whole new PC just not a HDD yet.

the motherboard is an ASRock M3A770DE (new)
CPU: amd phenom x4 955 (new)
RAM: 2 transcend 4gb 1333mhz sticks, (8gb) (new)
GPU: ASUS 8800GTX (secondhand from ebay)
HDD: hp 120gb With windows xp 32bit (from old tower)
PSU: alpha 750w (new)
CD drive: one out old HP tower (...)

Right, so i have it in a new pc case, not the best but it works. i have all the stuff in and have a monitor with a VGA connector, with a DVI adapter to fit into the GRAPHICS card.

the monitor shows me what is going on, i can enter BIOS and change stuff around and all that, but when it goes to boot up, it gives a hardware/software issue, with the options of picking the safe modes, last known working config. and start windows normally, but none of these work. what happens is it loads up, i see a glimpse of the XP loading screen, then a Blue screen flashes before going to this hardware error issue.

I've tried setting the HDD to boot first and then the CD-ROM to boot first but nothing, i've put a vista 64bit disc into the CD-ROM and tried uploading s new 64bit windows...

but it keeps coming back to the hardware issue, i've also tried taking one of the 4gb sticks out to see if that works but had no luck either

anyone with a solution on this? even if it doesn't work i'd still be grateful for your INPUT, thanks martinYou can't take the hard drive from one computer & install it into a different computer & expect it to boot.  Windows installation was configured for the hardware that was in the computer when Windows was installed.

Windows XP-32bit will only see about 3GB of the installed RAM.  That's a limitation BUILT into that version of Windows.
Vista64 should be able to be installed, utilizing all the RAM.  Don't know what you mean by "tried uploading s new 64bit windows...".sorry, what i meant by that is, i've got a windows vista 64bit disc in the cd drive, but i can't for some odd reason i can't get the cd to boot so i can put a fresh format and have a new 64bit operating system on the HDDChange Boot Order in BIOS.  CD-ROM 1st, HDD 2nd.that's the thing, it is in that order, yet it won't boot the cd for some reason :sHow old is the CD drive?not 100% on how old, maybe 5 years or more, but it's a HP DVD-writer +R/+RW 4x.

it's been okay installing windows 7, when i wanted to see if it would truly install on a pc with 512mb ramVista & Win7 disks are DVD's, so your HP DVD writer should read them.
What do you mean, "...install on a pc with 512mb ram..."?
You said you have 8GB RAM.
You also said, "...it's been okay installing windows 7..."
You said you are trying to install Vista.on the old system i installed 32bit windows 7 fine, but went back to windows xp because of the RAM.

But i have a copy of vista i am trying to put on nowWhat does it say "exactly" on the Vista disc?  I don't think it's a bootable disc.Try reading this2nd time you've spammed that Help site...

Am I right that a Drive can have up to 4. Primary Partitions?

Or is it that a Drive can have 1. Primary Partitions and 3. Lagicale Partitions?http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/structPartitions-c.htmlI did go there but one THING I don't understnd is the Partition with the OS on it is the Primary Partition.

So how can they say a drive can have up to 4. Primary Partitions on it?

If you have win xp on one Partition then this is the Primary Partition. And if the other 3. PARTITINS are just Blank they are Lgical Partitions right??This is what I ment to say.

A Drive can have up to 4. Primary Partitions and any one of these Primary Partitions can be Booted from at a time.

Now only one of the 4. Primary Partitions can be Partitioned again and this ne Partition will be called a Lagicle Drive.
And you can not Boot from a Lagicle Drive I GET all of this so far.

One thing If I make 2. Primary Partitions they booth will SHOW up a Drive Latters.
And if I Partition a Primary Partition again the new Partition that they call Lagicle Drive will also show up as a Drive.

So if all 4. Primary Partitions will show up a Drives and even other Partitions will show up as Drives as well are they all not called Lagicle Drives?

Because all I read SAYS Primary Partitions are not called Lagicle Drives why?

Solve : something's wrong with my keyboard/laptop?

Answer»

at random times today, my keyboard/LAPTOP has been playing up. the functions of the keys have gone weird.. some of them include: when i press escape it switches between two windows, i can't type anything, double clicking on an icon on my desktop opens up the program's properties, pressing enter full-screens some programs.. and probably others i don't know about.

the only way i have been able to fix this temporarily is to restart my laptop. but the THING is it starts to happen again a few minutes after turning on my computer again. i really can't stand having to keep RESTARTING it! have i been accidentally making it go like this without knowing? or is there actually something wrong with my keyboard? The first thing that pops to mind is water damage/a drop-but seeing as rebooting does momentarily solve the problem, it might well be a virus. Before we go into virus scanning, can you plug in a USB keyboard and see if the problem PERSISTS?
Windows already has the DRIVERS installed for keyboards and mice, so drivers shouldn't be the problem.
Can you think of anything that might have caused this problem? What happens in safe mode?

Hi I have a really old notebook, the ide cable and connector for the HDD have broken i have searched on the internet for EVER but had no joy. Has any body out there got a spare one they want to sell?

Broken image link removed...At what end have they broken ? ?
If at the notebook end the notebook is shot...if the drive end the drive is shot.Hi Patio Iv'e just managed to upload the photo, it's the cable that has split and the end contact on the connector that has brokenSurely someone must have one PleaseBegging and bumping won't change anything.

This looks to be a proprietary connector for a specific notebook (or series of notebooks). It would help if you could tell us what that notebook MODEL is and the region you're in.

Things like this are usually quite hard to find, if not impossible. You find the same model on EBAY that is being sold for parts.
But without a model number, it is just guess work.
Do you know if the connectors are standard? If   so, you fabricate a new cable.

They look like the IDE used on laptop HDD. If so, you can make one. Or have somebody do it for you.$9.00

Hi I'm living in Spain. The Notebook has no brand name on it, it's just called a notebook, but i think it's a Kapok Notebook 7800T. This Name came up after searching for more ram. If i can make my own strap could i plug it straight on to the motherboard and bypass the connector that is screwed on to the HDD caddy and would the strap provide the power to the HDD. Thanks for all your replies Roger Quote from: rogerlewis on October 18, 2011, 03:52:44 AM

Try to repair the one you have.  5-minute epoxy should work & post another pic.
From the pic, it's hard to tell how it's supposed to look like when new.  Black connector on left goes to drive.  Does the section on right go to the ribbon cable?  Put it back together the WAY it's supposed to look.

Hi thanks for the reply, The contact on the Black connector had been mended before but has broken again and i don't see how i can mend the strap as it is split. Roger.
I don't see any contacts on the black connector; how does it mate to the other half?  Usually notebooks have a special interface on the motherboard; the cable is an adapter; yours doesn't look special.  Put it back together the way it's supposed to look, then take a pic.

You image is not showing.  You can upload directly to CH.  See additional options below message reply box.Hi Hope this helps

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]Your other pics are gone now.
If you have the skills, this can be fabricated with this, which would replace the "split" ribbon.  The broken contact on the pc board can be soldered with a small 28ga jumper wire.

IDE laptop drives are 44-pin, +5v & +Gnd are on the extra pins.  IDE desktop drives are 40-pin.

The Xeon CPU's are used in servers & require special RAM & other hardware.  I would steer clear of it for home use.
This is the CPU:  http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon%205110%20-%20HH80556KH0254M%20%28BX805565110A%20-%20BX805565110P%29.html

You mention photoshop, so I assume you know that graphics card will also be an important factor.

Photoshop CS5 (and possibly PREVIOUS versions) use OpenGL to display their workspaces, but all filters and actual MANIPULATION of bitmap data is done in software. The actual card being used is not an important factor. As long as it supports basic OpenGL (and you would be hard pressed to find one that doesn't) it will work perfectly fine. Versions before they started to use OpenGL, and it won't matter, since all bitmap modifications and filters (with very few exceptions, aside maybe addons) were in software.

Solve : Processor to buy .. under Rs.9,000 (indian currency) or 184 USD?

I am confused between the following PROCESSORS.

Intel i5 2320 (3 GHz, 4 core)
Intel i5 2400 (3.10 GHz, 4 core)
AMD phenom II X4 965 (3.4 GHz, 4 core)
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T (2.8 GHz, 6 core)

I know that i5 2400 is better then i5 2320 and X6 is better then x6 but what I want to know is that :-
1) Which one gives best VALUE FOR MONEY

2) Which is best processor of the 4 without considering the cost FACTOR

3) If possible please let me know about a decent motherboard for your picks.

Thanksthe phenom II X4. it's what i have.

there is a better one though: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103934

don't get the bulldozer. look in the computer news FORUM for info on it.http://www.anandtech.com/show/4310/amd-phenom-ii-x4-980-black-edition-review
The Phenom II X6 1055T will definitely be the fastest processor in most cases.
As for "bang for buck," the i5-2400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074
is $189, only $20 more than the Phenom II X4 980 BE.
However, the Phenom II X6 1055T http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103851 is a mere $149.

You can get the Phenom II X6 1100T http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103913
for $189, which will beat all of these processors.

So I would suggest getting a Phenom II X6-more bang for the buck. A 1100T is the same price as the i5-2400, and outperforms it by a large margin.

If you want a best bang for buck motherboard for the processor I recommended, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157208
$124.  Be aware that it doesn't have integrated graphics.

Solve : Recovering from an electrical surge?

Answer»

Several months ago, the new Intel  motherboard that I had used to assemble my desktop became useless because of an electrical surge.

A technician tried to fix it up but after a month he ended saying that it was better to buy ANOTHER one.

We spent another month trying to to FIND the same Intel motherboard to replace it but we finally gave up.

I was really needing my computer back because my work was heaping up and getting behind schedule and the morning he offered to solve my problem in a few hours by replacing  my mobo with a MSI 945GCM7-L V2 which he said was similar to the electrocuted one I accepted.

That night I began to recover the backlog and I've been busy with that until some days ago.

During these months of backlog recovery I didn't notice the difference between the Intel and the MSI mobo but now that I have more time left and that I'm trying to do certain things I had planned to do when the unexpected misfortune arose I'm feeling kind of lost because I'm not familiar with its BIOS and kind of uneasy because I've lost contact with the technician who I assume knew more about it than I do.

Is anyone willing to give me a hand with some questions I have for this MSI motherboard?

PS: My first goal is to to remove the  internal HDD that is connected to the MSI mobo, connect it to a HI-SPEED USB 2.0 TO SATA/IDE ADAPTER that's  also connected to the MSI mobo to see if  I can boot my computer from it in that way.

I am aware that if I want to do this I will have to make changes in the BIOS but I don't know how to recognize if the BIOS accepts the changes or not.

Can somebody please help me with this please? Why do you want to boot Windows from a USB hard drive instead of the internal hard drive (IDE or SATA)?Also, if you had a good surge protector, preferably a UPS (the better ones all have very good surge protection), your original mother board wouldn't toast.  It's not too LATE to get one to protect what you have now. Hi Computer_Commando!!

My reasoning is the following:
I allways wanted to know as much as possible about my motherboards.
One of the things I was planning to do with my Intel mobo was to test her ability to boot from a USB device.
I already have a HI-SPEED USB 2.0 TO SATA/IDE ADAPTER  that has worked in the past.
I've got a SATA HDD that's working with my motherboard and booting my system.
Why not use all these components to find out what I want to know?

Having a personal UPS is almost useless where I live. We've got an electrical system that protects us of that sort of surges. This was an unexpected  lightning surge that fried my broadband internet modem and the motherboard and spared the rest of the system.

Thank you both for your time
I look forward to hearing  from you
Regards Windows is not designed to boot from USB devices...
This is by design.

It can be done with brute force but we don't recommend nor sponsor it here...You can boot an installation disk from USB, same as booting from a bootable CD.  Booting an Operating System like Windows is as Patio describes.  You can boot DOS, I've done it.

As for lightning surges, a UPS is useful, but no guarantee, especially if the surge comes down the center conductor of the COAXIAL cable.  I live in the lightning capital of the World.  I have a whole house surge protector in the Load Center (fusebox/breaker box) & UPS's on all electronic equipment, except appliances.  Thank you patio & Computer_Commando
Your mails have been two notable pieces of news.
I'll try to remember both.
Regards While Windows isn't designed to do this, there are many Linux distributions out there that are designed to boot from USB devices if you wanted to do it simply to boot an OS for testing purposes.

Many distributions will do this, but I know how to do this from Ubuntu so I will use that as an example. You'll want a minimum 1GB flash drive (or other USB-based drive) to do this. BACK UP ANY DATA ON THE DRIVE BEFORE DOING THIS. It will be erased during the process.

1. Download and burn an Ubuntu CD (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download)

2. Boot the computer from that CD, run the Live version (runs from the CD without replacing any existing operating system on the hard drive).

3. Once booted, connect your USB device.

4. Go to System -> Administration -> Startup disk creator

5. Next, choose your USB device from "Disk to use". Erase the disk (ALL DATA ON THE DEVICE WILL BE DELETED AT THIS POINT).

6. Choose the option you want for saving documents and settings (saved in specified reserved space or discarded on shutdown).

7. Click "Make startup disk", wait for the process to complete, and you now have a bootable USB device with Linux.  Wow!!
Thank you for this tip  quaxo!!
I must remember this message too.!! you don't have to do all that,  just download the Universal-USB-Installer from here http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ and follow the instructions. easyafter you have the OS on the usb plug it in and restart the computer. During the post on my computer i PRESS F8 and a list of options comes up asking what i want to boot from, choose the usb drive and press enter if you don't have the option of F8 you will have to change your bios Quote from: rogerlewis on October 04, 2011, 10:59:22 AM

That only eliminates the burning of the disc. He still has to download some version of Linux to make that work.Hi rogerlewis & quaxo !!!
I just now found your messages because a health problem kept me away from this forum during most of October.

Solve : Would the broken power switch cap lead to unstable performance of my computer??

Answer»

Hi all,

My PC is 3 years old, running windows XP SP3, 3.05GHZ CPU,
2GB RAM with a 130GB HDD powered by a CoolerMaster 550W PSU.

Recently, my computer's power button cap was broken and I removed it.
I used a pen to TOUCH the small projection on the power switch (as shown in red circle) to turn on my PC,

Since then, something strange kept happening:
I could hear some grinding noise from my PC, and
I could not see the Windows loading even thought the PC had been turned on.
At first I was thinking if the noise was caused by the HDD,
so I disconnected the Power Cable from the HDD to see if the problem would persist.
But after I had disconnected the power cable from the HDD and turned the PC on,
I could still hear something keep grinding every 10 seconds for a minute and then the PC turned off by itself.
Sometimes I could go to the BIOS setup screen but sometimes I coundn't because the PC just kept rebooting every ten or twenty seconds.

I have no idea what exactly happen and why there have been some grinding noise out from my PC even if the HDD had been disconnected from the PSU.

Could you give me some idea please?

Thank you.

Kitty

I sit corrected...Could be a CD drive. The OP should start the machine with the cover removed and observe (watch and listen) carefully.

Agreed. It could simply be a loose component being vibrated by a fan, or if the PSU has had heat issues the fan in the PSU itself and the rebooting could be due to a faulty PSU.one more strange thing I have to mention is that when I plugged the power cable of the computer to the power outlet,
my PC would immediately turn on even if I had not pressed the power button.
Is it related to CMOS problem?
My computer clock is sometimes wrong and I need to update the computer time by "time.windows.com"

My first thought was a cable touching a fan.

That is a CMOS problem. Prob need a new battery.

Many comps are set to boot up after power failure, so if you just unplug your comp to turn it off, that's probably why it starts up like that. There is USUALLY a BIOS setting that controls this. Something like 'power after failure'.

Solve : Asus G1S-A1 stuck at boot screen?

Answer»

I haven't actually turned off my laptop in some time (only hibernated). I took my laptop to a friend's and hibernated it before I left, turned it on over there, but then closed the lid. The laptop went into sleep mode and I pressed the spacebar to turn it back on, but it just went to a black screen. I held the power button to turn it off and back on, but it just goes to the "Asus gaming series" screen and does NOTHING.

The FRONT power button shows a different, colorful Asus logo, but that screen also does nothing (Except you can press ctrl+alt+del on both screens to restart).

Pressing the top power button goes to that "Asus gaming series" logo, and I can press Esc or F2 to get to the American Megatrends BIOS screen (as if it's going into setup or going into the boot selection menu) but it never does that either.

What I've currently tried:

* Removing and reseating the RAM and HDD
* Removing the battery and AC cord and holding the power buttons for 45secs
* Pressing the little >o< button on the bottom for about 30 secs with the AC cord in, and with it out
* Trying each stick of RAM separately
* Reflashing the BIOS (but I couldn't because it wouldn't enter the flash utility [F4 I believe])
* Nothing was in any USB port, except for a flash drive when I was trying the BIOS flash
* BOOTING a few different discs (couldn't even get to screen to choose where to boot from)

I've tried something once before when I had this problem that got it working again, but I'm not sure what it was. (

Thanks for any help.

Specs:

Asus G1S-A1
Windows 7
2.20GHz core 2 duo
4GB RAM (not stock)
1TB HDD (not stock)
BIOS is already FLASHED to 3.00 (or 300)Hi

Thanks for all the info. I would remove the harddrive and try powering the laptop up if it reports harddrive failure, then you know that there is something wrong with the boot sector on the harddrive. I would then suggest that you run the manufactures diagnostics for the harddrive. if that checks ok then it's just a boot sector data error and repairing that will be dependent on the version of windows.

Tried it just now. Powering up without a harddrive does the same things as stated above (no difference), unfortunately...Bump? Quote from: Bkid on November 02, 2011, 12:24:50 PM

Solve : WD My Passport 070a Freezes Computer?

Answer»

I have an external Western Digital My Passport Essentials 070a HDD and I have a lot of critical data/backups on it. I recently, just after having connected it via USB, saw Windows notifications of "Delayed Write Failed" for almost every folder on the drive. I received 40 notifications before someone who was walking a little too close pulled the plug. After that, when I tried to connect the drive to the PC, it freezes, even my mouse becomes nonresponsive. This is my school PC, so I cannot download anything onto it, HP Compaq TC4400 with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Service Pack 3. Thanks in advance to any help I can receive.Disconnect the drive...
Do a few consecutive cold boots and then POWER down...
Re-connect the drive and power up...

Does it see it now ?I should probably present another piece of information that I neglected to mention earlier, I have tried this drive with five different computers, but to no avail. I am also using a Nook USB cable, on which the B-end connection is the same, but is a little short. With this information, it seems more likely to be an issue with either the drive or the cable. Any other suggestions? I thank you.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330174
BTW, Steps 1-8 under "Resolution" are missing the steps to enter the Device Manager.  Nice job Microsoft. Thanks to Computer Commando for trying to help, but Registry EDITOR and all MMC snap-ins are restricted by group policy. I can bypass this by doing a "jailbreak" of sorts, but I would not be able to save changes in the CASE that I did this.Have you tried what i suggested above yet ? ?I did indeed, and no joy. My computer simply failed to get past "Applying computer settings..." on the boot. I was forced to perform a hard shutdown.Do we have any other suggestions? I have a group project that's due in two weeks and my group members are irritated because of (hopefully) temporarily lost data. Quote from: bobsklarservices on October 27, 2011, 03:06:25 PM

If the computer belongs to the school & you are not granted full access, there's nothing else you can do, other than contacting the school's IT department & let them deal with it.I believe it is a problem with the drive, it has occurred with every computer I have tried to connect it to.All Windows XP computers?Indeed. Should I try a different OS?I'm not sure, but the issue may be limited to WinXP & certain computers using it.  I have seen the same error on a WinXP machine from time to time.  Formatting of the USB device ALWAYS fixed it, but that is not practical in your case.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330174
It would certainly be worth trying it on a computer with a different OS.

Are the computers all laptops?  Is the WD drive Notebok (2.5) or Desktop (3.5)?  i.e. 2.5 drives are self powered, 3.5 drives have their own power supply.  I have several WD USB notebook drives.  1 older used to exhibit the same behavior, been reformatted FAT32 a few times.I tried it on another computer running XP, had a little more luck. Was able to list folder contents for the drive, but then rendered unable to actually read anything, and after CLOSING Explorer Window, the computer had the CPU/memory usage shown below. I also tried it on a computer running Win7, got a warning that the drive needed to be formatted before being usable.
Computer_Commando: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=440#tab3 - but it's a 300GB model.

Another thing:
Windows Delayed Write Failed to:
  • E:\$Mft
  • E:\$MftMirr

But at the same time: Disk Write Caching disabled for WD My Passport 070a

I can't REALLY answer very effectively because of your english. You are sure that the video card works. Maybe check the monitor cable for bent pins.

Solve : Hardware Detect Reset w/o Post Diagnostic Card?

Answer»

Working on a project where I need to know when a system restarts. Cant use PING to watch for when the connection disappears and comes back since the project doesnt have another networked computer at the other end. The post diagnostic card sold here has an LED that shows when the hardware reset happens by sensing the Reset Signal:

Quote

LED to monitor the Reset signal

from:
http://www.millennium-solutions.co.uk/diagnostic-tool-pc-computer/post-probe-code-reader-card.html

If this reset signal is the internal reset signal and not the front panel reset status, I could use this to drive a 4N25 optoisolator to know when the reset signal is sent, but was wondering if ANYONE knew is there was an easier way than tapping into this post diagnostic card for sensing the reset signal.

Best methods of interface are USB, Serial, Parallel to interface with the project I have. TRYING to be simplistic and keep costs down. This post diagnostic card would work, but checking to see if there is a better method.

Another idea I had was to drive a relay off of USB or Serial and so when the service ends during a system reboot or shut down, the relay opens until the system boots back up and service starts back up to close the relay contacts. And then enable interfacing with my project. This may be the best method, but figured I'd run it past you all.

Most simplistic idea ... Not sure if reset can be sensed thru USB, Serial, or Parallel if a system is given restart command. Haven't connected my multimeter to my 5V on USB and Serial to see if the power resets during the reboot cycle or if it holds steady thru reboot. If it does cycle the 5V out to these ports, thats awesome and the easiest vs having to run a software service to drive a relay.
ThanksGuess I am going to go with the option of relay driven by service thru USB. Tested USB port during reboot and 5VDC doesnt cycle. Also looked at pins 2 and 3 with scope for D- and D+ usb communications and nothing there helpful to pin point a warm reboot condition such as a communication flatline vs timed com bursts. I was HOPING it would be that easy given that my thumb drives always BLACK out and come back on during reboots, but I guess thats just because their service was terminated during the reboot. Going to close this request for assistance and go with the relay enabled via service to know when the system reboots and comes back online. Quote from: nixie on November 04, 2011, 04:38:36 PM

Front Panel Reset is not a status, it's a control.  I think it pulls the cpu reset line low.

I would stay away from the USB, Serial, or Parallel because the OS has too much control over them.  You want to be at the hardware level.
Get a copy of the PCIbus specification & study it.
http://www.dzjsw.com/shu/bz35.pdf
You may find that it's not as simple as you think.  RST# is not a status.  It is asserted or deasserted by the card.  The Bus provides no useful signals, it only DEFINES the signals & how they are used.  The cards do everything & must conform to the spec to function without interfering with each other.

In the long run, it will be cheaper to find an existing card & use it.  Not sure if the one you selected will work.  It's not clear if it locks the bus after completing it's routine.
