Solve : Windows update crash. Hardware??

Answer»

Hey my mum's computer broke so my info is limited.

From what she tells me she did a system update (its Wins XP SP2). When the computer RESTARTED it failed to work. The OPTIONS are given to start windows again in last known configuaration, safe mode etc etc, but when selected the computer just goes to blue screen of death or restarts.

I tried reinstalling Windows but to no avail, it came up with the SET up screen but eventually goes to the blue screen of death. I messed around with the BIOS but couldn't get anything to work. From the APPEARANCE the CPU is at 81 degrees celcius, is this normal?

I'm not sure what else I can do as I'm unable to reset the HDD, any ideas?

Thanks81 degrees celsius isn't normal, some computers shutdown by auto when their cpu's reaches 80 degrees or higher

25 to 40 degrees sounds more normal, assuming it's a computer with normal COOLING and it's not under load (Bios is almost like idle, so the temperature should be low)

Solve : Malwarebytes blue screen crash?

Answer»

Installed Malwarebytes, received an error and ran it any way. It scanned for a little while and crashed to the blue screen. Restarted again, windows loaded and then got another blue screen. Something about a critical file missing or something like that. Now windows won't start. I get some Dell info on the screen and then it looks like the BIOS loads. The screen flashes a line of text that reads LOADING PBF descriptors "or something like that" then the screen goes black. I can't get into the set up or the boot menu. CPU fan runs and there are no error beeps.
Can anyone help?1. Computer.
a. What is the make and model name/number of the computer, if brand name computer; otherwise make and model number of motherboard?
b. If it's a Dell, what's the "service tag" number? Easiest to access Dell website support via service tag number...

2. Operating System. What is the version and service pack level of the operating system? For example, Windows XP Professional SP3.

3. Recovery Media.
a. Is there a restore/recovery partition on the hard drive (possibly "hidden")?
b. Do you have the restore/recovery CD/DVD for that system?
c. Do you have the appropriate install CD/DVD for that operating system? This is a Dell 8400 desk top
Pentium 4
Service tag OU7670
XP Home SP3
If there is a restore partition it is hidden.
Have the OS disk and should have the restore disk.
The browser had been a bit buggy.
Not accessing pages. I could access most but not all by refreshing the window.Sometimes a clean install is the best solution...
You can hook up the drive as a slave in a working machine to get your data backed up...

Slave Drive Tutorial...Another thing to try is booting into Safe Mode and doing a system restore to a point prior to the problem.

Alan <>< I am unable to get into safe mode or any other set up.
Machine crashes to a black screen and will not respond to F2, F12 or F anything.
I NEGLECTED to mention it above but Windows does NOT have to be running to use the slave drive method above to get your data...How do I do a fresh install if can't change the boot order in order to read from my DVD drive?Did you read any of the info above? ?
All of a SUDDEN we are at a clean install ? ?
What did i miss ?Quote from: patio on February 08, 2010, 02:09:58 PM

What did i miss ?
The part where they decided to jettison (abandon) the "data"...

1. Backup Data. If you want to "save" data off the hard drive, you should do that before attempting any further restore/recovery options. Did you read the "Slave Drive Tutorial" link patio provided?

2. Service Tag Number. The service tag you provided "OU7670", comes up as "invalid" when entered in support pages of "www.dell.com" site.

3. Restore/Recovery Partition. It appears that your system does support restore/recovery from the hard drive. See the "PC Restore for Windows XP" link below. There's also INFORMATION in the "Owner's Manual".

I'm not sure what's going on with your "function" key access... Hope they work, because you'll need them. Follow the Dell instructions carefully. Let us know how it goes.

4. Reference(s):
a. Technical Support for Dimension 8400
b. PC Restore for Windows XP (from restore/recovery partition)
c. Manually Reinstall Your Windows XP Operating System (from CDs)
d. Enter the System Setup on the Dell™ Dimension™ 4200, 8100, and Later Computers
e. Manuals - Dell™ Dimension™ 8400 Series (Owner's Manual)Not quite ready to jettison yet, but close.
I won't be near this broke machine again until tomorrow evening.
The only other readily available machine I have is a little Insperion desk top. I'm guessing there isn't room to stuff a hard drive in there. I'll have to pull an old machine out of the attic to attempt the back up.

Sorry about the sevice tag.

Solve : HP 5610 all-in-one?

Answer»

whenever i print something from my computer screen, the printer spits out a sheet with 1 or 2 lines on it before printing the stuff i wanted. i've contacted HP and tried the 5,000 things they suggested.....and still i get the extra sheet. they had me download another printer(?), even,....deskjet 990......that did zero. i went back to the default settings, too, and there was no change. still an extra sheet. anybody got a secret THING to try?? Did the printer COME with a CD?Quote from: phobarbenix on February 19, 2010, 05:48:14 PM

whenever i print something from my computer screen, the printer spits out a sheet with 1 or 2 lines on it before printing the stuff i wanted......and still i get the extra sheet.
1. Print from computer screen.
a. Is this a screen shot?
(1) Of the entire screen, selected window, or user defined rectangular area of screen?
(2) What program (software) is used to select and capture image off screen?
b. Is this a print of website data from within an internet browser?

2. Has it worked correctly in the past (and this is a "recent" issue)?

3. What do the one or two lines say? Perhaps you could "post" a couple of examples...

4. Separator Page. Check to see if a "Separator Page" is configured for the "defined" printer.

Start -> Printers_and_Faxes -> right-click printer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> "Separator Page..." button.

5. What operating system and service pack level?yes the printer came with a CD and it was downloaded.
the last thing i wanted to print was a belarc profile. the FIRST page printed had the following at the top of the otherwise empty page " belarc advisor current profile file:///C:/program%20files/belarc/advisor/system/tmp/(barb).html copyright 2000-7, belarc,inc. all rights reserved. legal notice. u.s.patents 6085229, 5665951 and patents pending." another empty page said { "itinerary _______" and "http:www._____________________" } another said {"20 DAY mediterranean adventure________" and http://____________"}

it seems like this has always been this way, but i hadn't given it much thought.....assuming it HAD to pump out the extra sheet.

i went to the separator page settings, typed in "NONE" and the little window said that no separator page existed.

i have windows XP home ed service pack 3 (build 2600) IE8 and mozilla firefox (i use the firefox most of the time, but have found there is no change in printer behavior with IE. i have a cable modem too.

1. Page Setup. Within the Firefox browser, on the "File" pull-down menu, there's a "Page Setup..." selection. When you choose that, a "Page Setup" window appears with two tabs, one LABELED "Margins & Header/Footer". Select that tab and you'll see a "Headers & Footers" subsection at the bottom of its page. That subsection allows you to setup a header and/or footer on every page you print (from within the browser?). For troubleshooting purposes, please set "Page # of #" in either the left, center, right of header or footer so we can tell what page number the "extra" page is within the content selected for print. (I think it may be the "last" page of your document rather than the "first" page.)

2. Belarc Advisor. The example you provided appears to be the "last" page of a "Belarc Advisor Current Profile" print out. It contains the "header" as set in Page Layout followed by the last two lines of the profile. It looks normal to me. If you add the page number as requested above, I would expect it to be the last page of the profile; e.g. "6 of 6".

3. Print Page Order. On the "Printing Preferences" for my Lexmark Z42 printer, I have the option to select "Back to Front". This would print from the last page to the first page, so when I pick up the completed job from the output tray, it's in the correct order (with first page on top). See if you have similiar option and how you have it set.

To check: Start -> Printers_and_Faxes -> right-click on your printer -> Printing_Preferences... -> Mine has "Layout" tab with Page_Order subsection.

4. That's the best I have. Let us know what you find out... @ page setup i set headers for date/time on top left center blank page # of # on top right. i set all footers for blank. page order is still at front to back, but still prints the last page first. the page that came out first was
9 of 9 printed top right and the date and time at top left. and maybe i should mention that about 1/2 inch below the date and time is a dotted line with a picture of scissors on it. that is on all these "blank" pages.

what else can i do to force the printer to print front to back??

never mind about the dotted line and scissors thing. i'm a moron. anyway i went to IE and set up the printer again and got a preview of the 4 vouchers i wanted and all footers blank and just the page # of # in the header. the preview showed me 10 pages used.....with pages 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 blank. firefox preview of same material showed me 9 total pages....1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 blank. i tried printing just page 2 (i got the order switched to front to back)( finally) and that worked. then i'd need to get just page 4 printed, then only page 6...... what do you think...beside that i'm a pain?1. "Front to Back" or "Back to Front" is just personal preference.

2. I'm not that familiar with website design or printing content from them. I just know it never comes out the way I hoped or expected (because of the frames, tables, images, whatever). I believe there are ways to just select the data or frame you want, but I've never tried to figure it out.

3. You need to set up a "control" case to compare what you get off your printer (or see in print preview) with what someone else gets (or sees - I really don't want to waste "ink").

Suggest you do a print preview on this thread. When I do it, I just see four pages in "portrait" orientation. No wasted space or pages...

I'm looking at it through Mozilla Firefox 3.6 on Windows XP Pro SP3.1. My "Page Layout" settings.
a. Format and Options:
(1) Orientation: Portrait
(2) Scale: 100%
(3) Shrink to fit Page Width: checked
(4) Print Background (colors and images): NOT checked

b. Margins & Header/Footer
(1) Top, Bottom margins: 0.5 inches
(2) Left, Right margins : 0.5 inches

(3) Header Left : Title
(4) Header Center: --blank--
(5) Header Right : URL

(6) Footer Left : Page # of #
(7) Footer Center : --blank--
( Footer Right : Date/Time

2. Reason I posted my configuration, is the number of pages in my "control" preview went to "5" when I unchecked "Shrink to fit Page Width". So your mileage may vary...thank you for all your help, dahlarbear.
it looks like i'll have to set up each page i want printed one at a time. pain in the shorts, but seems necessary. i wonder if the machine is malfunctioning or if it's MADE this way. guess i'll ask HP (sometime next year)

I WANT two more GBs but would like a single 2GB stick if possible. Would the stick above be compatible with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104072&cm_re=kingston_hyperx-_-20-104-072-_-Product ? I noticed that the voltage was a 0.01 off and i dont think that matters MUCH. I would like to double check before i go ahead and purchase it though.Go to http://www.crucial.com and click on scan my system. I hope this HELPS youI already knew everything that the scan revealed. You should remove those music last.fm sticks from your computer might have issues! jk

The best way to ensure compatible memory is first update your BIOS as they normally add newer compatibility to RAM and get the latest MOTHERBOARD manual which will have a list of RAM it supports.

Ensure it's on the list.

Check the DDR version matchs, well this is simple enough it will normally be DDR2, unless you have a newer computer or a really OLD one. DDR2 comes as DDR2 PC 2700 to PC 8000. Ensure what speed your motherboard can support or has previously in there.

Check the timing/speed of the memory against the old stuff. If it's slower, remember the motherboard will set it to the slowest one, which can be a waste of the others performance.

Check the pins match, 240-Pin or whatever. Check if non-ECC or ECC, some motherboards don't support it.

Double sided RAM, or single sided RAM, makes no difference. Heat sinks cost more but at good for overclocking and staying cool and stable.

The voltage off by 0.01 won't matter.

When installing them check if your motherboard is single, duel or tri channel. Normally it's duel, this means you install the first lot in slots 1 and 3, second in 2 and 4, for the best performance (lots of 2). Newer computers will be tri, which means lots of three RAM is best performance.

Solve : Laptop won't turn on?

Answer»

Hi, i have a Acer Extenser 5230 and over the last couple of weeks it's been doing something strange.
i was using it last night and everything was fine, when i went to TURN it on this morning it wouldn't turn on, the green light to tell me it's plugged in was on and every time i press the power button the light goes out and then COMES on again but nothing else happens.

This did happen a couple of weeks ago i left it charging for a couple hours and it turned on perfectly but now i have to leave it charging for 12/24 hours before it will start. The laptop isn't old as i only BOUGHT it in november so i don't think the battery could be dying.

Sorry that this is so long but i'd really like to get this fixed preferably without costing me LARGE sums of money."The laptop isn't old as i only bought it in November..." If you're able can you return it to the place where you bought it? With only being 3 months old you've purchased a computer with a problem. Don't WASTE your time trying to repair it.

Alan <>< Does it work properly without the battery?

Power laptop down. Remove AC adapter from laptop. Remove the battery from laptop. Plug AC adaptor back in. Power up laptop. Thanks for all the help but nothings working . so i've contacted acer and their going to pick it up on monday to fix it

If desktop replace the keyboard immediately...if laptop get it to a shop even sooner...
He didn't say he spilled LIQUID into the keyboard (not to say that's not what he meant). He said "computer" - though I'm not sure how one would do that unless it's a laptop.Hey sorry for the confusion, Its a desktop actually there are ventilation holes (to reduce heat?) on my tower the liquid went inside there. It hasnt worked since Im going to try opening it up tonight. In most desktop machines the PSU is at the uppermost part of the case...if it does not boot up the 1st time i wouldn't try it much more times than that...

Solve : HP Laptop, HDD, Win XP?

Answer»

So I have a laptop thats an HP. the old hard drive that was in it was kaput so I bought a 160GB WD internal drive. Fired up the laptop and had the windows xp cd in it and it said it couldnt detect the hard drive. So i was pissed cuz i thought i bought a dead hard drive. Went to the store and bought a 320GB from WD, put it in, fired it up again. Still....said hard drive cannot be detected blah blah blah. So this frusterated me more. Then my friend gave me a CD that came with some of his WD hard drives that had drivers on it. Fired that up with each of the drives and the hard drives seem to be fine. So that leads me to believe that either A. The hard drives needa be hooked up externally for some weird reason. or B. HP hardware or WD hardware for some odd reason wont allow you to install windows XP onto it. What do you think? Is there something im doing wrong? What am i not seeing? PLease share any info you may have! Thank you -SchooBoiiwhats you laptop model? Does it take PATA or SATA?

Did you enter your Bios and did you see any HD being detected? If your bios sees the hard drive then it could just be that the HD are RAW format and for some reason the CD did not pickup the hard drive,

If your BIOS is not seeing it try pushing in your HD in a bit tighter to ensure it is not LOOSE.

Some HD are picky with the specs of certain HD if we can have you model number of your laptop we can see if there are any restrictions. My notebook model is an HP pavilion dv6500 Notebook PC
processor speed of 1500 MHz
1Gb Ram
it takes sata hard drives, i have this adapter thing thing that allows it to be placed into the COMPUTER.
i dont have a model number?? unless im bein braindead right now lol i have a product number if that helpsss? anyone? any help or advice to offer?I looked up you spec sheet it does take SATA,
In your laptop BIOS do you see the Hard drive listed though? I don't see anything that would restrict you from your computer from picking up the Hard drive.

Also quick question: When you fired it up and said did not detect HD, did you change your laptop setting to boot from CD Drive first instead of HD? A RAW HD will always be undetected.

Is that where the Hard drive is not getting detected?Right this second i am running a hard drive diagnostic that is taking forever. I will tighten the screws holding the drive in place right now and fire it BACK up. The system has the PhoenixBIOS system. I am unfamiliar with it as of now because my frusteration has caused me to RUSH through half the stuff i've done. I am going to look up the HD in BIOs and see if it comes up here in a sec. the diagnostic is at 80%. and yes i had the laptop boot from the CD first. right when it gets READY to start putting the XP files onto the drive is when it says it doesnt detect the drive. hit me with some input and an update is coming shortly after thisWell you are running diagnosis and software off of it, so I assume yes the hard drive is there and it is reconized by the laptop but not through the XP installation CD.

Are you using a Windows XP CD or a recovery CD? It could be that the XP installation CD can not find any SATA Drivers/controllers for your laptop.

According to some research try entering your BIOS F10 or however you get on and look for an option "Native SATA Mode" if you find it disable it and see will the XP installation work now.

Also see if you can find SATA/IDE emulation. (It might not be there)man this laptop is so freakin weird. I have an XP installation CD. tightened up the screws on the HDD. I havent ever seen an option "Native SATA Mode" on here. I looked all over and there isnt one. currently looking for IDE emulation thing thingi tightened the screws on the HDD. nothing. I looked for the "Native..." thing thing. nothing... looked for the emulator thing thing too and still.....nothing......im about done with this laptop. a real test of patience man. According to some more research this laptop originally came in vista?

Its 2am here and I really need to go, maybe some other staff will try to pick off where we left off

From what I read you might need to install a SATA driver for XP:

This package contains the Intel Serial ATA (SATA) Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) Controller Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems. This package is used to create a diskette that is needed during a new operating system installation to ensure that the notebook hard drive is detected and usable for the installation.

See if this will help, you will need a USB or some sort of other device where you can install this driver.

Quote
1. Download the SoftPaq .EXE file to a directory on your hard drive.

2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
A diskette containing the driver is created, and the driver files
are also made available at c:\swsetup\sp37005. If you choose to
cancel diskette creation, you will need to copy the driver files
to the chosen media.

To use the diskette during a new operating system installation, complete the
following steps (choose the procedure that matches the operating system you
are running).

IMPORTANT: This SoftPaq is ONLY required for use with a purchased retail
Microsoft Operating System CD or DVD. It is not needed if an HP supplied
Operating System CD or DVD is used. An HP supplied Operating System CD or
DVD has the Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver included. Using this SoftPaq
with an HP supplied Operating System CD or DVD may result in a "blue screen"
event during the operating system installation.

There is an installation instruction see if you can follow that to get to your driver. If it works the HD should be detected now.

heading off to bed hope other members can help if you still stuck.

Solve : computer upgrades,?

Answer»

hey,
i am here to ask advice not to get my ocurse work done for me, i am wokring on the current assignment below and currently dont even know where to start, i am prob the weakest member of the IT group but i want to get better.

this is the assignment that we got and it is about upgrading comptuers. the BREIF lists various parts but i dont really know what the specifacations of the parts mean, thus i dont know how good they are or where to even start with an upgrade as i dont really know also what i should be upgradeing to. (yeah i know i should know this stuff ifi am taking an IT practitioners,), i was googleing the parts, but it is not really helping as all i am fining is the parts and their prices , and their specifacation, but this is getting me no further with figureing out what to upgrade to.

i was considering just saying to do ram upgrades and hardrive upgrades but... yeah i am at a loss,

any ideas?

Task 2 - Recommending an upgrade (D2)
The machine which is currently used to demonstrate products does the job by showing
PowerPoint presentations which are made up of text and graphics. It is fairly out of date
but could easily be useful in another role. This is the specification:
● Pentium 4 1.4 GHz processor
● 128MB RAM
● Asus P4P8X SE motherboard
● IBM Fireball Plus 15GB hard drive
4 of 6
● floppy drive
● ATi Rage Pro 2x AGP graphics card (4MB)
● ATX mini tower case with 300 watt PSU
● Unbranded DVD-ROM drive
● standard PS/2 mouse and keyboard
● 17” AOC CRT monitor
● Windows XP Professional
● PowerPoint 97
The client wants to take it home for his 15 year old son to use as a gaming and Internet
machine as well as the odd bit of homework (LOL). Obviously it is not up to the job so
what upgrades would he need? He is not keen to spend more than £150.
List at least three hardware upgrades and three software upgrades. Be precise and
specific about the new parts and software (e.g. if you recommend a new mouse then say
which manufacturer and model).
The key thing is to end up with a machine that is suitable for the job.

thank you for your time , Old system; I wouldnt invest in adding anything to what you have.Would be helpful to know what games the son is INTERESTED in. For homework, the computer would be useful as is.

I fully understand xavier's OPINION. If high-end gaming is the objective, then upgrading this machine PROBABLY not a practical idea. But, if decision is to proceed with this, I think the processor, RAM, and video card are the three most critical updates. But, keep in mind a possible need to upgrade the power supply if other components are upgraded.

I see the motherboard supports AGP 8x, so I'd get a card with at least 256MB of memory; 512 or more would be better. I don't want to get into specific cards.

RAM should be increased to at least 512MB. I'm not a gamer, but more than 512MB would probably be the way to go, if possible. Have you determined how much the motherboard will support?

Have you determined what range of processors the motherboard will support? I think you need to provide some of this basic info here. That video card won't run any modern games. A new card with 256 MB will be in the US $40 to $50 range. 1 GB of ram will also be in that price range. Beyond that, I wouldn't put any more money into that machine.

128 MB of ram with XP must be painfully slow.I would advise using the old computer as a door stop.

Im surprised the graphics card even has the nerve to put anything on the monitor!

Then advise that they stop being stindgy with their money and go and buy a modern pc!!

The old pc would do as a general office pc for typing documents and general web surfing. I agree that by updating the graphics card, hdd and memory you might get a bit more life out of it on a basic level, maybe even a more powerful psu. But other than that its a complete upgrade. i.e new pc.Do the math>memory> v card> GOOD power supply = appx. $190.00

Solve : disappearing HDD?

Answer»

Hi

I have a COMPAQ Presario 2019UK.

I have the 80gb sata drive that came with it and allso a 1TB samsung sata drive. SAMSUNG HD103UJ SCSI Disk Device

No matter which sata port i PUT the 1TB drive, whilst transfering data it will suddenly make the pc hang and disappear. I then have to turn the pc off, take the sata cable out of tyhe mobo or drive, reinsert it and reboot.

I know its not the sata ports as ive TRIED the 1tb sata on the spare 3 ports and it does the same but i never have any probs with the sata drive that came with the pc.

Ive changed sata cables and still the same.

Any idea's?It sounds like there is a problem with the drive itself

If you have access to another computer, you COULD test it that wayI thought maybe it would be....hoping it wouldnt be.

It came from a working PC and it never had any problems in that.

Maybe a heat issue problem??

At a bit of a loss with this one..

Im stumped.

It reports no errors, just has a heart attack when transfering data FROM it??

Solve : Monitor connected to lap top wont work properly?

I am running windows XP on a latitude D620. I bought a 22" MONITOR to use with it for easier reading. I KEEP getting a message that there is no input, however when I shut down the laptop before it completely logs off the 22" monitor pops on long enough to say system is shutting down, and it comes up for a minute while the system is loading my DESKTOP, but then goes back off and reverts to the laptop monitor. I went to displays, follwed the trouble shooting, but still no change. any advice?Yes:

1. On your laptop, do you see the F1, F2, F3 etc keys?
2. If so, then look for one that looks like a moiniter/Television on there, if there is one there, then simply hold down FN, and whilst holding down FN on your keyboard (Bottom left) then press the F(number) key on your keyboard at the top. This setting allows you to set the DISPLAY visible on your laptop screen/Monitor screen/Laptop & monitor.Thank you so very much. It is now working just fine. Have a super day!

Solve : Recently had a nasty virus, now I can't use my scanner, can't use fax program?

Answer»

I recently had that Internet Security 2010 virus on my computer, and thanks to SuperDave here, I believe I got it cleared out of my system. However, I kept losing my printer driver, and I did get it re-installed and I can print, but when I go to scan, I am unable to. I get an error message about a failure to communicate (lol, what MOVIE is that line from?) it says there's an error in communicating with the scanning device, please check that it's connected properly and TRY again. It's obviously connected properly, as I can print, but I can't scan. I have an HP PSC 1410, I have the full VERSION of the driver downloaded. I've never had this problem before? I also have a fax program, and am unable to use that as well. The error message there is about the ENTRY point? "The procedure entry point Wow64DisableWow64FsRedirection could not be located in the dynamic link library Kernel32.dll." Whatever that means?? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!! Do you have the original installation CD that came with the printer? It might be best to just do a complete uninstall/reinstall.

HP has a diagnostics UTILITY program to help with scanning problems. If you haven't tried it yet, it might be a good place to start.

Is the fax program something that was included with the printer/scanner also?Quote

Also, is it the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the operating system?I'm using Windows XP, no idea about which version? All I know is I could scan before, now I can't, and I just inserted a new ink cartridge, and until I scan the test page, it's going to print out a new one everytime I turn my printer on, which wastes ink. What should I do?

Solve : Virus seesm to have bricked my laptop?

Answer»

So my laptop recently acquired a virus. I had some sort of "WINDOWS security alert" popping up out of nowhere (hadn't downloaded any such program). Anyway at some point MUST have restarted my pc and bam I was screwed. No icons on desktop. Things that normally load in the lower right hand tray (zonealarm etc etc) were not there. Could connect to internet even though my wireless connection was intact. And any application I attempted to open would bring up the "open with" BOX. In safe mode I tried system restore, AVF free, malware bytes and ad aware. None of this worked.

So then I remembered I had a HDD backup on an external. I tried to boot from it and thats when my pc basically bricked. I got a blue screen of death. Anytime I try and boot from the internal or external now I get the MESSAGE "a disc ERROR occured press ctrl+alt+dlt to restart" but it never works I just keep getting this same error.

SO I guess my question is is there a way to overwrite (not sure if thats the right work) my backup HDD onto my laptops internal HDD? Seems that is my only option now as I can't boot windowsWelcome to the CH forums.

Quote

So then I remembered I had a HDD backup on an external.

How was this backup created? Does your bios permit booting from a usb device?

Solve : Still can't scan anything, printer keeps printing the test page.....?

Answer»

I posted a while AGO about not being able to use the scan function on my printer, now it prints the test page every time I turn the power on. I can't finish aligning the cartridges since I can't scan. Can someone please help me? Thanks!
I have an HP PSC 1410 and Windows XP. At one point someone asked me something about which XP I had, I have no idea, or how to find out. Did the printer come with a CD?

How old is it?

Did it ever work?1. The "back story".
a. Recently had a nasty virus, now I can't use my scanner, can't use fax program
b. I can't go on to Facebook, I get a wierd restricted message???

2. The "alignment process" they refer to:
a. An Alignment Page Prints Every Time the All-in-One is Turned On or Off or a Print Job is Started1. References:
a. In Windows XP the Message 'An error occurred while communicating with scanning device' Displays When Scanning with a USB-Connected All-in-One
b. Installing the Product Software in Windows XP for a USB Cable Connection
c. How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system
d. What does "Automatically check to see if the latest driver is installed CORRECTLY" do for me?
e. How to Scan in Windows XP without Using HP Software
f. Scanning with HP Solution Center Software in Windows XP.
g. HP Scan Diagnostic UtilityWhat are all the links for in the 2 replies here? I know what I've posted, so you reposting links to my last posts was a complete waste of time. Posting the links to HP's help pages, again a waste of time, obviously I've already tried that, or I wouldn't be here. If you'd read my post from last night, you'd clearly see that I cannot complete the alignment process BECAUSE I CAN'T SCAN ANYTHING. Hmmmm, I think that is what my problem has been all along. Now, I can't print anything either. As of last night/this morning, I click print on something and the printer icon comes up on my toolbar, but nothing happens. I go to delete or cancel the project, and nothing happens, the icon still stays on my tool bar, the status box shows "deleting", but nothing is happening. I have to reboot my computer for that to all go off, when I start my printer back up, of course the test page prints AGAIN, and most recently the job I was trying to print last night printed, but in a completely different LANGUAGE, or maybe just a bunch of characters, I don't know. The pictures and layout were correct with what I was trying to print, but the text wasn't.
Yes, this printer has always worked fine. No I don't have a cd. Quote from: JJ 3000 on February 14, 2010, 01:47:50 AM

How old is it?

It's about 5 years old, approximately. I've never had trouble with it before, it's a basic printer, really pretty user FRIENDLY, non-complicated, obviously if I'd had it with no trouble. I really think this has to do with all the crap that I got from that Internet Security 2010 virus, if that's possible? That's when everything changed. Thank you for the reply. Do you have an ability to try this printer on another computer. You will need to go to the manufacturer's web site and LOCATE the software for the specific model you have. The drivers you will also need will be specific to the printer and usually also for your Operating system (for whatever computer you try it on).
This will help to know if the problem is with the printer or is it because of some issue with the current computer you cannot use it on. Once that can be determined it might more readily lead to the assistance you need. truenorthQuote from: mcummings36 on February 14, 2010, 10:16:56 AM
What are all the links for in the 2 replies here?

The links are to help you. The HP website troubleshooting is as easy to follow that manufacture troubleshooting gets from my experience. Links to some of these steps were provided in your previous post and you never replied back with what you actually tried, just keep saying that it still isn't working. If you tell everyone exactly what you've tried and exactly what the problem is we might be able to help you more. If you have tried all the troubleshooting that has been listed and still having problems I'm with truenorth and would think the problem is in the scanner itself. Maybe the virus and the scanner quitting at the same time was just a coincidence.

I probably wont be able to get to this issue for a while an the unit isnt with me.The IDE card probably requires drivers...have you installed them ? ?
How is the drive jumpered ? ?

You haven't provided much info....sorry, its hard to recall right off. I dont think, I need a driver but course from what I have of the 486. There isnt any driver with it. I think its set as master. I probably should of checked that. It seems that this may have been a drive from this machine though, this is a SECOND hand machine however. I do have a driver for the harddrive, thing is that I dont know how to run it.Hard drives don't require drivers...
But that addon IDE card will.
Make sure it's for the flavor of Windows you're currently running....I am aware of that. Thing is that I have a floppy for the drive, so I dont know. Quote from: Gin on March 28, 2010, 10:35:04 AM

If it is a custom build post all your hardware specs....Possibly you have overclocked too much. Maybe your hardware is not suitable. Try increasing CPU core voltage (in BIOS) in small steps. You may damage your computer.

i have a little problem with overclocking .when i over clock .the pc keeps restarting,

You NEVER posted your hardware specs. What do we have to work with here?

At first glance I'm guessing that you increased the Front Side Bus speed.. This would cause both your ram and cpu to operate at higher speeds (this is, if the board uses a traditional FSB and not QPI)... Over clocking the ram could cause the system restart as you described. I installed a PC100 ram module into a motherboard locked at PC 133 speed, forcing the PC 100 module to run at 133 MHZ and caused the system to restart... Your system shutting down is probably due to the cpu over heating, due to inadequate cooling, a factor that must be taken into consideration, DEPENDING on how far you want to go...

Assuming you haven't already permanently damaged your hardware by increasing voltages, we may be able to get something going for you here..Post your hardware specs. eg: Model and make of your Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Heatsink/Cooler. Also tell us what frequency you are trying to run your CPU at.

No one will be able to help you until you post this information

Why? You have a laptop. Patio, this is a Dell unit. I dont really have funds to change everything out an the OS. Which is all ready installed with a bunch of software which I havent used in a good while, such as my BANKING stuff an what not. Cause the laptop has issues too an as a tech I ended up getting it as a carry around an second hand as well as for classes too. But it needs worked on as well.

Doesn't seem to have stopped you though Well know, but just certain things that he needs to change is all. Like I lost all of the text to my post which was rather long. Thats not the point.I had always thought that most of the lower end Dell computer cases had a non-standard MOTHERBOARD form factor. I know that my old dell did. I could only replace the motherboard with another dell motherboard.exatly, not to mention that the power supplies are differntUmmmm...
We're talking about a laptop here...correct ? ?No, it's a tower unit. I would have indictated that it was a laptop if it was. Some of the older Dell DESKTOP have a unique pinout for the power supply. I'm not sure about a Dimension 2350.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=DIM_PNT_CEL_2350
The motherboard does not appear to be a micro-ATX, so there may be no extra mounting positions on the case.
I wouldnt know about that but I ment in general hardware wise. I still need a board though. If all the lights are off on the back, it's possible that more than the motherboard are bad. If you're lucky, it could be only the psu is bad.the board gets soft power an turns on the rest of the unit. So I assume thats all it is I had the same results with a Dell Dimension 4100Quote from: Gin on March 28, 2010, 03:04:33 PM
1. the board gets soft power an turns on the rest of the unit.
2. So I assume thats all it is I had the same results with a Dell Dimension 4100
1. What is "soft power"? Maybe you are referring to +5VSB (+5 Standby)?
2. All "what" is? I had a 4100, same symptoms, and it was only the psu.
If you want to buy a replacement motherboard, without further testing, it's your MONEY, go right ahead.

thank you for link....

but i tried to follow this THOROUGHLY. by making posts clear as possible......not one long post with 3 QUESTIONS.....people find it hard to reply long letters, most especially if they come here with similar problem and he has to read so much.....hence my decision to split my posts.

however, back to the problem, i did not physically damage the disk, i have working UPS, my wiring and jumpers are fine, system setup is straignt out of the box, computer is about 2 years old.

warranty is not an option....am in Africa, we dont have a seagate centre on the corner of the street. i just want to SOLVE his problem or have an insight about what to do when it happens.

Did the Seatools indicate what problem you have?
Do we understand this is a internal SATA disk in a Desktop?

If you have not made any changes to the system, and if the BIOS does not give the correct ct information about the drive, you would just assume the hard derive has been damaged.

Now any changes, we would mean CMOS battery replacement, changes to the BIOS setup, installation of another Operating system, use of drive partition software, change of SATA drivers or change of chip set drivers. Even opening the case may cause significant changes. Without knowing it, you may have damaged or dislocated a cable.

As a troubleshooting trick, you would want to try the drive in another machine. Or, find a similar drive and try it in your machine. The motherboard SATA connector or interface may have failed. Try the other SATA port.
seatools for dos could not acess the drive......seatools in windows could see it but no tests work...or return a fail.

yes, it is internal SATA disk for desktop.

i am resigned to that option of failed hard disk...so am actively looking for a solution...and will follow up here in case i find anything.

tried in another machine as you suggest....he drive is recognized, bios still reads 0mb SIZE....but no luck with actually reading the drive.

it was a backup/storage disk, no partitioning, no OS, just data.Quote
tried in another machine as you suggest....he drive is recognized, bios still reads 0mb size....but no luck with actually reading the drive.

Bad news. That fact that another machine says 0MB sounds very much like a premature end of life for the drive. But maybe you can ship it to a friend for a possible replacement. Many Seagate drives NORMALLY have a five year warranty.

http://www.seagate.com/www/support/warranty_&_returns_assistance/oem_warranty_statements

But it is only three years on some OEM products.

Solve : I want to boot from second CD Drive but Can't?

Answer»

My Dell PC has a virus. I realized a reinstallation of the OS was the fix, but didn't have the original disk. So I reqeusted one from Dell and they SENT one right away, to their credit. So I backed everything up and made a list of all my apps to reinstall and set about to try to boot from the disk.

However, I have run into a snag. My original Dell CD-Rom drive broke awhile back, so I installed a Sony CD/DVD-RW drive in the SLOT below the original drive, leaving the original drive in place. The Sony drive works fine for playing disks, but--and here's the problem--the computer will not boot from it.

I figured I would just disconnect the old drive so the computer would be forced to see the new drive, but that did not work. The computer then would not recognize any disk drive at all. Then I tried switching the positions of the two drives (replacing the cables accordingly), but again came up with a beep during the startup and a message saying no disk drive was recognized.

So, frustrated, I then put the broken drive back in again as drive O and the Sony as drive 1, as originally, and the computer started up and appeared to operate normally again (no beep during startup), but of course it still will not boot from the Sony drive in position 1.

I tried searching the web, but could FIND nothing for this particular set of facts.

Thanks in advance,

MitchMake sure the cd drive is ahead of the hd in the boot order in bios. Thanks, I should have mentioned that I did that. Forgive a silly question, but are you certain the disc is bootable? Hey ALLAN--

I assume so. It's the disk I received from Dell. It is labeled "Reinstallation CD".

--MitchLet's be 100% certain. Try booting to a KNOWN bootable cd or dvd. That was my original issue. I don't know where the original disks are. Was there a switch changing the drives from "master" to "slave" I should have used? I vaguely remember something about that when installing the drive, but I just pulled them out and looked for a switch and for the life of me I can't find it.

I obviously should have indicated "beginner" not "intermediate". ANY bootable disc. Borrow one. While it's certainly possible you are having a hw problem, there's a chance you are not. Let's be certain.I had failed to change the jumper position. Quote from: washdup on March 28, 2010, 08:15:30 PM

I had failed to change the jumper position.

This would have nothing to do with being able to boot a bootable CD...It had everything to do with whether the computer would boot from that drive.

Solve : ECC RAM Questions?

Answer»

I had gotten some ECC RAM without realizeing that it was differnt then non ECC. Thing is that I have an unit that maybe able to use it. I install the DIMM an nothing but beep codes. I figured that something in the BIOS needs CHANGED, but I dont know what to look for. Case in note, what am I suppose to look for?Not all boards execpt eccram. Check with your BOARD mfg.You shouldnt have to change anything in the bios when adding ramI understand that, I did look at the box an said that it would take it. Thing is the unit isnt with me currently. But I dont think that I can return it if nothing else. The processor would also have to support ECC. What processor is installed on the system..Quote from: EEVIAC on March 28, 2010, 04:59:09 PM

The processor would also have to support ECC. What processor is installed on the system..

I don't think so. ECC is handled by the memory controller, which is part of the CHIPSET; not by the CPU.

Either way, he's posted this issue at least 5 times before with his PREVIOUS account, and almost every query will have something like "thing is I don't have it on me at the moment" or, in this case:
Quote
Thing is the unit isnt with me currently.

How the he** are we supposed to diagnose issues when you're talking about a unit that you don't even have? you want theoretical answers or what? where is this "unit"?Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 28, 2010, 10:24:28 PM
I don't think so. ECC is handled by the memory controller, which is part of the chipset; not by the CPU.

Here is a quote from a motherboard manual:

Use of a CPU that supports ECC is required if you wish to install ECC memory

I guess my point is, it seems that some systems DO require CPU support for ECC. Perhaps not all systems are that way, though

Solve : Black dots on LCD flat screen?

Answer»

I have a Dell 17' LCD flat screen monitor that was given to me, and when I TURNED it on it has in the middle of screen 2 black circles that don't move and I can not see anything under them as if some took a black sharpie marker and drew 2 circles on it, 1 is about the SIZE of a quarter and the other is about the size of a dime does anyone know a way to get rid of them or fix them or is it unrepairable or any info on what they are?

It seems to be getting WORSE and growing in size It seems you have some clusters of dead pixels. As far as I know they cannot be fixed. In some other cases, "stuck" pixels can be fixed, the kind when you see red, green, or blue dots on the screen, but this clearly not your case.

See video here:

well, there may be some hope. Have a look here

Your situation seems pretty extreme THOUGH, so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Solve : Case Pin/Motherboard f_panel question.?

Quick Question:

Does it matter if I Insert the positive/negative ends of my power /reset switch case pin connectors into the wrong pin polarity on the f_panel header of my motherboard?

The connectors are grouped together and I can't tell which side is positive and which is negative. I'm worried I might do damage if I plug them in backwards. No, it wont WORK. There is such a lower level of power running threw its not like connecting a floppy drive. Right??? If memory serves, "the RED pin always CONNECTS to pin 0" pin 0 is SOMETIMES indicated on the motherboard with a little triangle in one corner or sometimes with numbers.

Solve : Should I send back this hard drive??

Answer»

I've recently brought a new Seagate 7200.12 1TB drive for my new gaming computer.

When it's in use (Activity) I get a NOISE like this but much louder:

Should I send it back to eBuyer under it being faulty?

It passes the short tests in the SeaTools software.I did not click on your link, but if the drive is making any unusual noise at all then yes, exchange it.Well, the noise it makes is like the noise the old Windows 95 era drives used to make, that crunching sort of sound.

I was just wondering if it was normal for a 7200.12 1TB, considering the 250GB 7200.10 in my HP is virtually silent.Did the old drive sound like that? Hard drives should not make any such sound. That doesn't sound right. My HDD doesn't sound like that (Western Digital 1Tb drive). As you bought it from ebuyer I WOULD send it back to be on the safe side. Nearly everything that I have ever bought from them has broken prematurely, but that's just my personal experience. If you're talking about the drive in my PREVIOUS HP computer, then it's barely audible, you could just hear when it's reading/writing but it wasn't noticeable.

The new PC is a new build, the drive is loud and very noticeable.

I'll be returning the drive back to eBuyer and getting a Samsung F3 instead.

EDIT: Also to add, the hard drive does also vibrate quite a bit when it's making the noise.

Solve : Computer suggestions?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a friend who is looking to buy a new computer. He is looking for a light gaming system. The price should be about 1500.00 or less.

What I am looking for is a prebuilt or a parts list from Tiger or newegg. I will be the one putting it together and SUPPORTING it.

He has a keyboard and mouse and speakers as well as a monitor so I don't need to put money into that.

Thanks
Ya know.. you can ask that to the guys at the computer store.. they know their equipment.. they have EXCELLENT pre-built gaming-focused systems (at least where I go)..
I don't find Tiger to be super good.. but then again that's in CANADA I think? Thanks. I had BAD luck using a store.

I am in the US and have had no PROBLEMS with tiger.

Solve : Replacing Thin Clients, Need laptop / netbood advice?

Answer»

Hello,
The company I work for purchased a Server back in 2003 with Microsoft windows Network 2003 software. The person making the final buying decision was talked into ordering THIN Clients instead of desktops. The Devon IT Thin Clients were the worst decision ever, as they can't handle the amount of information being fed from the server to the individual work stations. They freeze up or disconnect from the server multiple times every day. The person that purchased the thin clients is no longer with the company. I am not an IT person and I'm looking for better advice than the sales guy at our IT service company can give. The thin clients have started dying and everyone is looking to me to decide what to replace them with. The owner of the company WOULD like the workstations to be mobile, so I'm looking at laptops or netbooks. I need advice, because I don't want to be the person who REPLACED one bad system with another. I have already decided every laptop will get a separate full size keyboard and screen, so the size of the actual laptop is not an issue as LONG as it has at least 3 usb ports, a port for a network cable, and the processing power to connect to the server. Employees will not need to save any information to the laptop. Any suggestions? Will a netbook work? ThanksIt all depends on your budget. Since you are buying separate monitors and keyboards I recommend a universal docking station. They make it much easier to hook up and unhook a laptop.

Even low cost laptops will probably be faster than your existing terminals.

I would stick with name brands with good warranties.

Personally, for a business, I would stay away from netbooks. Others MAY disagree with that, but that's just my opinion.A critical factor in the equation is how much time do you have before the replacement equipment needs to be in place? If your company does business with other companies that use this type of office environment i would suggest talking to their people to find out what they think about their system. What to they like what would they change.
Taking the time to learn from the experiences of other --the good and the bad--will help to make a better decision. As this will undoubtedly involve a fair amount of money and commit the company to an operational environment for years to come the time should be taken to do it as well as possible. People here are quite knowledgeable in many ways but i would want to be getting at least part of my knowledge from actual users of a system i might wish to concider. truenorth

Solve : External Hard Drive Keeps Changing Drive Letter?

Answer»

Lately, my HD Passport has been changing from J:/ to H:/ and stays there. I end up having to go to "Run" and go to "Regedit.exe" and renaming H:/ to J:/, and then restarting. But then I'll go out along my business, I'll hear the sound like something has been disconnected, and reconnected right after. It's like my hard drive is disconnecting by itself and changing to a letter drive I DON'T want. When I leave it alone, it'll have the sound it disconnected again and reconnect, but it doesn't change from H:/. It stays at H:/. I don't think it's a virus.

So why do you think this is so? And how can I fix it?OS?XPYou don't need to go ANYWHERE near the registry. Just go to START - RUN and type compmgmt.msc then press enter. Then go to Disk Management. Then right-click on the drive and change the drive letter. The change is immediate - no reboot required.Ah you SEE. Even THAT was a temporary fixed. Just now I heard the disconnection sound and reconnection sound, and my external hard drive's letter was now H:/. I didn't touch it EITHER >_>

Solve : 5 Secs = 1 Min?

Answer»

I have two PCs that I built during the week end of the 27th of March. They are from NewEgg. It was a combo deal and here is the website (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.359881) with a Power Color 5570 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131341&cm_re=5570-_-14-131-341-_-Product). They were built exactly the same and I was installing on them that i noticed that one was quite a bit faster than even my quad core. When you would click on a letter KEY it would type it 5 times in a row. It boots the OS in under 5 secs. I have changed the CPU with the other one and changed the HDD. I am beginning to think that it is the MOBO. Please help? PLz and Thx!!!My computer boots in a matter of seconds and shutdowns just as fast, has fast cursor and keyboard rates, instant click reponse (as it's been tweaked by me). It's not necessary just the computer itself but could be a PERFORMANCE tweaked OS and/or software. ALTHOUGH my computer does have auto-overclocking FEATURES on the motherboard and graphics card.

However, it's a bit overkilled if it types the letter MULTIPLE times in the row on one keypress.

Most of this tweaking is done by removing unneeded services (services.msc) and security holes from the OS and advance hacking the registry (regedit). Also software can adjust these, such as if you have a gamers mouse like mine you can create multiple profiles for speed, accuracy, etc.

You can change some of the basic speed features for the keyboard and mouse in the control panel. So it would be best and easilest to look there first:

Control Panel > Keyboard (repeat delay, repeat rate, cursor blink rate, testing)
Control Panel > Mouse (cursor click speed, movement speed, scroll rate, etc)

If you are after a good tweakers site and for removing the unneeded services, try: http://www.blackviper.com/

Hi again. I would like to know which is the best CPU cooler for Intel core i-7 920.

The heatsink and fan included with ANY CPU is perfectly sufficient, as long as you don't overclock...

aside from that just CHOOSE one, they are all pretty much overpriced metal fins with a fan attached; just go with the reviews.Actually i would spend some time determining which one will fit given the constraints of clearance inside the case and taking all other components into consideration...
That's where'i'd start. This does not answer your query directly but I guess it will help.
Intel is hosting a live chat event with their experts where people can ask for any question regarding their core processors. I reckon that it will be a good platform to ask this or any other question. The event is on 26th Feb at 9:30 am GMT.

Is there a preference in hardware? Intel or AMD? Nvidia or ATI?
NoI gotta go if you could find something that works under $600 and i'll LOOK over it and we could change it to his likings. : )Mid class for $600 will be hard to do. Especially with the input devices and monitor added to the bill. But i'll give it a shot. Here is what I come up with for $600. You said mid level gaming, and this is my idea of a mid level gaming system. None of the parts are high end, but will get the job done WITHOUT overclocking.

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/TemporaryWishList.aspx

Note that this list doesn't include the following:

Case
Keyboard and mouse
Speakers

In my opinion, if you want a good mid level gaming rig, and you don't already have any of the items stated above, then it's probably gonna cost a little more than $600. Another reason I left those items out, is because they are items that you should PICK out yourself to meet your own taste. This list is just my own opinion though. Someone else could feel differently about the specs of a mid level gaming PC. Also, I think it's important to point out that a mid level PC, and a mid level gaming PC are two different things.Quote from: t_blake07 on February 18, 2010, 06:15:35 PM

Solve : RAM Memory?

Answer»

Classic question which do I buy? The situation is that I have a motherboard with 4 memory slots (DDR2: PC2-5300, PC2-6400C5 & DDR2 PC2-8500 supported). The build currently has 2x512Mb 5300's installed but I want to add another Gb. I am now only able to buy 1Gb> sticks and the only company that had 512's wanted to charge me $50 to send them.

So do I add a single stick of RAM to the current installed?
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Memory-PCAndLaptop/DDR2-PC2-5300/667MHz/Corsair/VS1GB667D2.html

~Result~

Slot 0: 512Mb DDR2 PC2-5300 Dual Channel (667MHz)
Slot 1: 512Mb DDR2 PC2-5300 Dual Channel (667MHz)
Slot 2: 1024Mb DDR2 PC2-5300 Single Channel (667MHz)
Slot 3: Empty

Or replace the memory completely with newer/faster?
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Memory-PCAndLaptop/DDR2-PC2-6400/800MHz/Novatech/RAM-802GK.html

~Result~

Slot 0: 1024Mb DDR2 PC2-6400 Dual Channel (800MHz)
Slot 1: 1024Mb DDR2 PC2-6400 Dual Channel (800MHz)
Slot 2: Empty
Slot 3: Empty

I'm thinking performance here, will matching pairs of dual channel memory be worth the MONEY? Or will 2 dual 512's and a 1Gb be just as good?Go here and let them test your memory and make recommendations. Good company, good PRICES, good service, and good warranties. Even if you don't buy from them it's a good starting point.

http://www.crucial.com/index.aspxCan your computer even go at the maximum speed? I have a computer with DDR2 memory and I brought PC2-5300 which goes 667mhz/533/mhz/400mhz

My computer is running the memory at 333mhz which is slower then the slowest the memory can go..

I would say check out your memory speed and motherboard to see how fast your memory can go.

Based on what you want and your current memory speed how about:

Slot 1: 1024MB
Slot 2: 512 MB
Slot 3: 1024MB
Slot 4: 512 MB
____________
3 GB of memory ( Remember to pair up the memory in there slots dual channel for MAX performance) Mine is slot 1 and 3 2 and 4 to pair them up yours look like 1 and 2?

There is no harm in adding slower memory because the faster memory would slow down to the slower memory.

Can your motherboard handle more then 4 GB of memory? If you install 4 GB of memory you might get 3.2. or 3.3 GB recognized out of 4. Even though it says max is 4. There is some addressing issues so the max it can recognize is 3.x

If you have 3 GB of memory you would be a couple of hundred MB short but, better then getting 4 GB and not having your PC use all 4 GB.Quote

There is no harm in adding slower memory because the faster memory would slow down to the slower memory.

This sounds backwards....or i'm mis=reading....
Why add slower memory for any reason other than to use what's on hand ? ?
With today's RAM prices there would be no reason to do so...Also, the RAM speed that is shown in BIOS is half of the speed it's running at.

DDR means "Double Data Rate". BIOS reads it as SDRAM, which is why it's only showing half the speed.

Also note that half of 667MHz is 333.5MHz. BIOS doesn't show the .5MHz.

If your motherboard's FSB is 667, and you install 800, then it will only run at 667. From what I can see though, your FSB should be 1066MHz, so 667 would be the slower RAM in this case. With faster memory there is only a slight performance difference to me.

I currently have 2 HP DC5100MT, same hardware specs EXCEPT the only difference is the memory.

one uses the new PC2-5300 x2 and the other uses PC2-3200 x4 memory

The faster memory boost my CPU speed by only 2MHz

Intel Pentium 4 2.80 Ghz (520) Prescott

With PC2-5300 x2 2793.22MHz
With PC2-3200 x4 2791.56MHz

I don't know what uses alot of memory or where you will notice a difference, but from what I have seen there is very little boost in performance when doing anything.

Opening applications is about the same, running games are about the same also.

I have yet found a justification for faster memory, from my experience faster memory does not guarantee that "wow" performance for the price.

I upgraded my SDRAM PC100 to SDRAM PC133 and Then my DDR2 from PC2-3200 to PC-5300 and I see very little performance boost per the price I paid for memory.

The only reason why I brought PC2-5300 was because I needed to upgrade to 2 GB and it was what cruical recommended that or PC2-6400.

My computer is not high tech or anything "exciting" it gets the job done on what I need. Maybe the prices have come down now, but when I went to get memory I think they were a bit PRICEY and I have yet seen the cost per boost.

I agree, Windows98.

I just thought i'd point out why a PC shows half the speed of the RAM installed. It's not that it's running slower, that's just how BIOS shows it.Thanks I think that just having the single works out just as good from what you have said.

Some of you had the wrong end of the stick though. My second option (replace memory) only had PC2-6400 memory because it was cheaper than getting the same amount of PC2-5300.

Thanks anyway though and my bad in the first place for listing too much info

Now is everyone is sure that I wont loose performance by mixing single channel with dual? I.e. the single channel wont run at 333MHz to match the dual?

I NEED to get a new hard DRIVE for my computer and want to be sure that I don't buy the wrong thing. It is a back up computer and I have my magic jack tied to it so I REALLY don't want to drop a LOT of money into one. Can anyone advise if I need a particular hard drive or what I need to look for when searching for one. thanks a heapKinda depends on the computer, can it use a sata driver or does it have to be IDE. How much space do you want. what are the specs of the computer?

Solve : WD My Book 1.5tb Showing as "unallocated space" after removed from case. PLEASE HELP!?

Answer»

I had a Western Digital 1.5 Tb My Book essential edition (pictured below) that my wife GAVE me for Christmas. i have filled all but about 400 gigs with very important data. MY ENTIRE LIFE WAS ON THIS DRIVE. for the purpose of securing it in my COMPUTER (via sata connection) versus having it possibly damaged keeping on my desk. i removed the HD from the case, unplugged the "usb convertor chip"(Pictured Below) from the sata connector on the drive and PLUGGED it into my machine. at first the drive does not show in my computer. The computer recognizes that a drive is plugged in but that is as far as it goes. When I go to Disk Management, the drive shows up 1.5 tb of UNALLOCATED SPACE. At this point my stomach drops to my feet. Panicked and worried I disconnect from the internal machine and reconnect to the “ wd chip” and fire up my machine. Still no drive. However the Western Digital program that comes on the drive shows up(must be contained on the chip). I have done much research online and have have been so far unable to find somebody who has the exact same issue and how to resolve it. Western digitals forums are “closed due to maintenance” and ive been unable to get an answer from phone support either.
I work at a computer store/repair shop and have access to technicians and limitless tools and programs. If somebody could please tell me what it is ive done and how I need to fix it It would be greatly APPRECIATED. I know my data still has to be on there because no formatting was done at any time. Ive even had my techs at work take a look at it they have run programs such as testdisk and recovermyfiles. But have so far been unsuccessful in finding out how to restore my partition. The entire culmination of my life is on this drive… including pictures and video of my newborn daughter

Please. If some body could please help me.
I need this to work.

If you have tried to plug the drive into other MACHINES and they all say unallocated space then it seems it got wiped somehow. You could try to use Recuva. It's a tool by Piriform software. Its for recovering deleted files. Download here: http://www.piriform.com/recuva then install, open the program, target the drive, scan, and pray! Hope this helps. Good Luck!because its an unallocated drive, there is nothing to scan. it doesnt even show up in several of the data recovery programs ive tried using at my store. but i will give it a shot. thank you for your timeI'll ask a quick question...was the MyBook software used on this drive ? ?
If so there were issues with it and i can dig up the linx if you let us know...Have you tried SpinRite?

Solve : Is my power supply the reason for all this??

Answer»

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion 576x Desktop computer at my home that uses an ATX motherboard. The problem with it is that it does not boot for crap, (not even knoppix). I used a voltage tester for the POWER supply on it and the P.G. value would always be DIFFERENT each time I disconnected and reconnected the ATX power connector. For example, it would SAY 280ms the first time, 0ms the second, then up to 380ms the third time. I believe that this is a major problem with my computer, but I just WANTED to know what you guys think. Thanks Borrowing 1 and swapping it in there would answer this question without spending any cabbage...It is a power supply for 99.9%. Try another one and you will be sure.

Solve : how to remove Buffalo's vitual drive?

Answer»

Dear all,

Yesterday,
I bought a Buffalo 500GB exteranl HDD for backup of some important school project files, but for the first time I connected it to my PC,
it automatically created a virtual drive for me.

The External HDD was assigned an I Letter, and
the additional virtual drive it automatically created was assigned a J letter.

Since the external drive was USED by me and not other users will access it,
I really don't need its built-in encryption function.
But matter what I do, the virtual drive just happens to exist in my PC whenever
I connect the Buffalo external HDD to my PC.

The virtual drive is also annoying,
but what I am concerned about is that I am not sure if
the virtual drive may cause damage to the files that have been backed up in the external HDD.
Do you know how to remove it?
I WOULD really appreciate if you could help.

Thank you

Kitty
1) Why is the virtual drive annoying?
2) No, it cannot "cause damage to" files already backed up - or anything else
3) The external drive should not be connected when you are not USING it, so I really don't see with the issue is
4) The virtual drive has to be created by some software that is loading when the external drive is connected. If it really bothers you that MUCH, identify the software and stop it from running. You should be able to do this in Disk Management...
Richt clik My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management.
Find the drive...right clik it and select dis-mount.

Re-boot to make sure it's not re-created.

Solve : What are intel processor threads??

Answer»

i dont understand. intel has on their website that their i3,i5, and i7 PROCESSORS have threads. for example 2 cores/4 threads. does this mean it acts as a quad core? does anyone know?when in doubt www.google.com can answer alot of the questions you have about PROCESSERS and the differences in the model numbers.i found a wikipedia page, but it wasnt clear. it said that they share ram with the processor, but whats the purpose of processor threads? what do they do?You can image thread as virtual core ... PHYSICALLY they have for example 2 cores but each could run more less independly 2 threads. In summary, 4 processes could run at the same time more less INDEPENDENT. More less because threads are sharing same MEMORY or someting like that so one can interfer with other that's why are they not so independent.
Hope it gave you an overview.thanks
