Solve : laptop screen very dark and faint images?

Answer»

After I spilled water on my RELATIVELY new laptop several days ago, I thought killed my computer and was about to suffer major depression. Each time I tried booting it, the power light and cpu light would come on, but the screen was black. Today, interestingly, I discovered the screen some very faint images, even though it was still almost black. I shone a lamp close to the screen and I was able to see slightly better--I was able to click around, log in, and access files as normal. I also attached an external monitor, which worked. My files and stuff are all there!

So my comp is not dead! But...what should I do about the dark screen? I did some research and the 2 causes of dark screens are: broken inverter and broken CFFL BULB. Which one do you think is broken in my case? Is it difficult and costly to repair in a shop? Do you think I can repair it myself, without putting myself--or the computer--in too much danger? (I've next to no experience dealing with computer HARDWARE and stuff, but I'm willing to learn).

Thanks for any help!
Yes the Blup which is there on the corner of the LCD Screen are gone Bad
dont try to do any troubleshooting for that blubs as they are very small & minute.
this can CAUSE the damage to your LCD Screen also

Tell me which company Laptop u are usingso I guess it needs to be repaired

btw it's a sony vaio laptop, < 1 yr old...how serious is this problem? Quote from: funnyman_123 on May 08, 2010, 10:01:31 PM

Sunnysky, I think you still have moisture inside the laptop. I would recommend just letting it dry out and see if the problem persists. There may be a chance that something is damaged, but it's less expensive to play the waiting GAME at this point.Yes you can wait for sometime..
but yes one more thing, if it has some moisture it can damage other parts as well, so please think

Solve : laptop battery dead? :(?

Answer»

Another problem resulting from a water spill on my laptop...my laptop's battery doesn't work! If I put the battery in, nothing HAPPENS. No indicator lights, no HUMMING, no boot, 100% silence. However, by connecting the AC power cord, I was able to get the comp to boot with green indicator lights.

Does this mean my battery is broken now? Or does this mean something's broken inside the computer, preventing the computer from connecting to the battery? When I spilled the water, the battery got wet, and so did the area near the battery. Before I water spill, my battery was perfect, lasting over 3 hrs.

Note: this happened days ago, so everything should be dry by now

Any ideas? thanks QUOTE from: sunnysky on May 08, 2010, 10:25:38 PM

Not necessarily, moisture can hide in spots inside the laptop for easily beyond a week, depending on ENVIRONMENTAL conditions.i tell u the BEST way for your saferside,, go to Sony Service center & get your whole system check..
they will check the whole system & dear do it fast

Solve : Freezing on boot.?

Answer»

I am assuming this is a hardware issue.

When I boot my computer it freezes. I get the typical message press f8 for BIOS, press f11 (for another command but I cannot REMEMBER what it is at the moment) So I wait for a few min and either press f8 or f11, It does not go into the BIOS but instead boots the computer. Then it runs fine.

If I press f8 at start up It goes though the normal motions of BIOS pop up. When I exit the BIOS it does the same freeze.

My Google searches have come up fruitless. Any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated.

System info:
Windows XP sp2
Abit IL9 pro mother board
4 gig ram
e7300 lintel processor
gts250 graphics card
Nod 32 anti-virus (updated this morning)
What happened since the last time the system booted properly and the first time it did not (new hw, sw, virus, error, power failure, etc)?Nothing that I'm aware of. Everything was normal when I shut my computer down night before last. The only thing that was strange was that my gaming pad (http://www.boyntontech.net/images/Ideazon-ZGP-1000-I119-1020-.jpg) has a light at the top of surrounding the z logo, It did not shut off the night before last or last night. If that device were failing would that PREVENT the computer from booting properly?

The only other thing that I have been playing with is a new cell phone: TRANSFERRING photos, MUSIC, etc. But it has been almost a week since I have hooked it up to the computer. At that time I was having some issues getting the cell phone to be RECOGNIZED though 2 of the usb ports (the two that are permanently attached to the computer case.)

Power down and dis-connect the gaming pad.
Do a few cold boots and see what happens...Ok so after mistakeingly unplugging the printer(insted of the gaming pad) the computer booted fine no freeze But I noticed the light on the gaming pad turned off when the computer shut down. I turned off the computer, unpluged the gaming pad then plugged the printer back in and again it rebooted fine. For good mesure I plugged the gaming pad back in and for a third time the computer booted fine.

Assuming the light remaining on is causeing this issue. What is it about the light that would cause the computer to freeze on boot up.It has nothing to do with the light.

Next time you post a question PLEASE provide ALL pertinent information in your first post.Quote from: Allan on May 09, 2010, 09:06:17 AM

It has nothing to do with the light.

Next time you post a question PLEASE provide ALL pertinent information in your first post.

I did not think the light was the problem, by your post you have confirmed that. So the light was not necessarily pertinent information to solving my problem.

I am always thankful to anyone that offers me help, But simply coming up with a solution to my immediate problem in not enough for me, I would like to know why it happened in the first place. That way If someone else needs help with the same problem I can pass that information along to someone else in need. Just as you are doing with me.

Solve : Broken Screens on Acer Netbooks?

Answer»

I have considered buying an Acer Aspire One 751 netbook, but have found a number of threads on the internet saying that a design fault on Acer netbooks causes the screen to crack, sometimes within days of purchase. Acer then refuses to accept responsibility under warranty, saying that the netbook has been dropped.

Does anyone KNOW how WIDESPREAD this problem is, and does it also affect the 751 model? If you are talking about this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0SvcZmC89E) problem then it does seem quite common.

May people claim to have fixed it by disconnecting and reconnecting the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard but since I don't have an Aspire One I am unable to test this. No, that apparently is another problem they have!

TYPICAL of the posts I have found are here: http://www.netbookchoice.com/209/05/06/acer-aspire-one-751-reviewed-%E2%80I'd look at ASUS or Toshiba's...Personally I have the Samsung NC10 which is an old model now but there are new Samsung netbooks available and they are great!

GOOD quality and AMAZING battery life!

GroovybluedogI really don't understand the question. Without a long story, exactly what is the problem?Hello,

Basically The Sims 3 lags in windows 7. I wish to know what i should do, Some suggest installing XP. I get "Hard drive not found" errors with the XP install. All the specs such as hard drive make/model and stuff are above.

RegardsSo you are trying to install XP and the XP CD can't find your hd, is that it? If so, you NEED the sata drivers. Either slipstream them into an XP setup cd or copy them to a disc and press F6 at the beginning of the install when prompted to and let the installation routine find the driver. Make sure you have all of the appropriate XP drivers for your system (including the chipset driver).Hi,

Im confused now. I have 2 different stories. One says (on chat) to get dban and wipe the hard drive, and other say to get drivers. What do i do?

Regards"wiping the hard drive" has nothing to do with your problem. You need the sata driver.

Of course you can always go back to chat and listen to those geniuses if you prefer.Hello,

No no, Your helping fine. So where do i get these drivers from and how do i use them without a Floppy?

Regardshttp://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtmlHello,

Thanks for the link. I will report back when the Hard drive manufacturer replies with the drivers.

If i was booting to the F: drive, that didn't have a running Windows enviroment, then i formatted the F: drive, what would be running Windows???

Nevermind them. At this point They're just trying to FIND a reason for the prompt you got. Of COURSE, if you were booting from that drive it would be labelled the system drive and DESCRIBED as such in the error message, and no reference to "disk utilities" would be made.

Sounds to me like a program you have installed likes to access your hard drives. perhaps windows search is indexing it, or something similar.
Ahhh, yes, there is a index program that runs.

Solve : New blu ray burner?

Answer»

Just install new Pioneer Blu ray burner.Do I need to install a driver?Or do anything else?I tryed today to burn video from my project in Corel Pro software and it didn`t find anything when i inserted blu ray empty disk into drive, when asked. But it would work with original dvd burner.Does Corel Pro support blue-ray? It may not. But to answer your question no, you do not need any driver.Yes ,Corel Pro X3 supports blu ray.Yesturday i tryed to burn disk ,just through windows, got two videos total of ~20GB and recorded them in 4x speed as it says on BDV ,inserted in Panasonic: it says Nothing Recorded. Then Inserted it in LG blu ray player-it showes both videos on MENU,it PLAYED only 14 min from total of 1.5 hr of first video clip and on second clip in menu it says :Empty. ?Is the Pioneer burner bad or problem with software?Could be bad disks.
Just recorded another one with one video clip of ~15Gb.First I `ve CHANGE some settings in Corel software and made blu ray #1 to be used.It took 13 hours to burn blu ray disk from AVCHD format wich is in computer (I think). But after all video is in great quality.May be first disk was bad.Thanks.

Solve : DVD drive not reading all disks?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba L500 Notebook, which I have had for about 2.5 months and I have RECENTLY been having trouble with my DVD disk drive. It will read some disks but not all. It is mostly alright with CDs but is worse with DVDs. It will read MUSIC CDs and CDs with files saved onto them and it will burn CDs, but it would not play a CD that had had music burnt onto it. It registered the disk, but not the files on it. It said that the disk was blank and asked me if I would like to burn files onto it (which I didn't try because there is already files on it that work FINE).
I have had a lot more trouble with DVDs. I have tried to play several DVDs (some of which have played fine before) but it has only played one, which was a cheap movie (so it might not have the same protection/quality!!) When I put a DVD into the disk drive it starts making loading noises, but they get quite load and it vibrates, a bit like when you put a scratched disk in, but worse. Then it dies down and some start making a scratching type NOISE, (a bit like you make in the back of your throat) but it doesn't damage the disk. When the disk has finished ‘loading’ and you go into ‘my computer’ it says that there is no disk in the disk drive.
I did download SecuROM Diagnostic Tool so that I could play an EA Game and I’m not sure if that would have done anything, but I’m sure everything has been working fine after that anyway.
Maybe try to clean the laser inside the optical drive with a little bit of spirit on a cloth.

You bought this only 2.5 months ago so its still on warranty so the best WAY is to go to the shop and let them do it. If you decide to clean the laser your self remember that your warranty will expire once you take out the DVD-DriveTake it back to where you bought it with a few of the DVD's that won't play to demonstrate for them. Get it replaced.

this is for a microphone wire and has NOTHIN to do with the charger... -,-Remove the battery and use only the adapter.laptops have been able to run perfectly fine with dead batteries or no batteries and just run on a charger for over 20 years. Whoever told you "the power just goes back into the charger" has no idea what they are talking about. the battery doesn't "absorb" excess power that is ALWAYS delivered.

Anyway, the reason your chargers are frying is probably because they aren't the correct ones for your laptop.Quote

Maybe not. The battery can fail in a mode that will stress the charger. Still, the charger should protect itself.

He may have to replace the charger.

Solve : Help narrowing down hardware suspects?

Answer»

Hi guys, how's it going? Not well for me. Recently built a new HTPC (specs towards the end) and it has been working fine for a week, in I watched a few DVDs and BDs in it, listened to some music, checked out some of the diagnostic stuff it comes with (power usage, temps, etc.) but today, it started acting up. What it's doing is, in normal mode, freezing after I open certain programs, or freezing a minute or two after it's just running. I can get it to work perfectly fine in safe mode, and in safe mode with networking, I can do torrents and use firefox, but once I opened two firefox windows and it froze.
What I've done so far in trouble shooting this is I removed all recent drivers. I got a network card today so I downloaded all the programs and such I had on my old computer. CCCP (codecs), Firefox, utorrent, and some Microsoft updates for DirectX and other programs. I removed all those, didn't fix things.
I started looking into hardware, since I wasn't in the mood to reformat (will if I have to). What I've done so far on that end is:
-Monitor system temperatures in the BIOS. Computer runs at 36 C. All case fans and CPU heat sink with fan are working great.
-Checked mother board to see if it had any problems. It has an onboard LED readout that will give some numbers and the manual has a list of what they mean. No problem on this front.
-Currently running check disk to see if it's the hard drive. It's about 50% done, been running for a long time now, hopefully it will finish without any problems.
EDIT: HDD check done, after like two or three hours. No problems, so cross that off the list.
-After that HDD check is done, I was going to pull one of the sticks of RAM, then do the other, to see if one of those is bad.
From there, any suggestions on what I should try next? At this point I still don't know if it's hardware or software related. Should I pull the CPU, clean it, and reinstall it and the heat sink? Should I just reformat now and see how things go?
Specs:
Windows 7 Professional 64 bit (legitimate purchase + install, if that matters)
ASRock P55 Extreme mobo
Intel i3 CPU
Radeon HD 5670
Corsair 650W PSU
G Skill 2x 2GB RAM
Let me know if you need any more info. Appreciate any help I can get. Sounds like either a driver issue, or a bad OS install.
From what you've said you're already TROUBLESHOOTING this logically, which is good to see.
As the HDD has checked out ok, the next thing to do would be to run Memtest on each stick of RAM overnight.
Check your temperatures just in case - run OCCT as this combines a stress test with temperature monitoring.

It does sound more driver or OS related than hardware but it never hurts to check everything just in case.
If the hardware all checks out OK, the next thing would be to reinstall the OS, then load each driver one at a time, checking the PC in between to see if the problem starts happening again. From what you've said it sounds like a possible network driver issue, but that's more of a guess at this point.
Did you install the latest Windows updates?

P.S. welcome to the forums!HEY Calum. Thanks for the post and the welcome! I'm about to sack out, but I discovered something worthwhile so I figured I'd post it before I go to sleep.
So I was messing around with the RAM. First, I pulled one out and left the other in. Turned it on, and it worked perfectly! I had two firefox windows open, media player playing a song, two diagnostics running, and torrents going and it never froze! After about thirty minutes of working, I was convinced. So, I next pulled that RAM and put the other one in, and turned the computer on again. Same, it worked perfectly for the twenty minutes I left it.
So I put both back in, turned it on, and it froze again, same as usual, about five or so minutes in. I then switched them, turned it on, and it went for about five minutes and froze.
I'm very confused by this. Separately, each work great. Computer booted up faster and start up programs came on with in seconds running a single stick. Together, the computer freezes. Don't know what to make of this. I figured one would cause the computer to freeze, but neither did. Only when they are together.
Going to have to sleep on this. I'll try memtest tomorrow to see if it reveals anything about each stick, Calum. You're welcome, thanks for getting back again so quickly.
Hm, that's interesting. Not sure why the issue would not be occurring in safe mode if that's the case, or why the issue would not have shown up at first, that's odd. Nevertheless, I would be inclined to run Memtest on each stick individually first, then together. Also, run OCCT with each stick installed, as it will stress both the CPU and the memory. I would also check the memory timings and voltages in the BIOS, it sounds to me like either the timings are too TIGHT or the voltage is too low, causing this issue only when both sticks are installed.
I have seen this with a bad memory controller too, which would require replacement of the CPU - that's why I advise running OCCT to stress the relevant components and pinpoint any issues. At least now it seems you've managed to narrow the issue down to either the memory (settings or hardware), CPU, or the motherboard although that last is much less likely.
Good luck with it, looking forward to hearing back on this problem tomorrow or whenever you do have time to troubleshoot further.OK, here's an update.
I couldn't get memtest to start up, so I just went with OCCT, which is a pretty cool program! So using OCCT, I tested each RAM (from here on, calling them RAM 1 and RAM 2) in each slot (bottom slot and top slot). RAM 1 performed marvelously in both slots, and so did RAM 2. I did OCCT on RAM 1 in both slots, and RAM 2 in both slots. Large data stream, for 15 minutes each. Both worked great, didn't freeze or anything. CPU temps hit 38 C, MB hit 34 C, so nothing out of the ordinary there. Along with OCCT, I did SOM browsing in Firefox, opened up so music files, looked around the computer, etc. No problems.
So, after that, I put both RAM sticks back in, and started up. It started fine, opened up all programs at start fine, and was working great. At 6:50 up time, it froze. Temps were in the normal range (31 C for both CPU and MB), there was never any spikes in memory or CPU (I opened task manager to check this), things were running just as they did with single sticks in, but it still freezes.
So, I'm taking this to mean both RAM sticks work, both slots on the MB work, but for some reason, these two things don't work well together. Also, the CPU works fine, as I was maxing it with OCCT on five separate tests (I did RAM 1 in bottom slot twice) and it got hot, but kept on going.
Calum, I'd like to try what you mentioned about checking memory timings and voltages. If you could elaborate more on this or post a link on how to do it, I'd appreciate that. I've never REALLY messed with BIOS before, but now's as good a time as ever. OK, so problem is solved. Here I was spending most of the day chasing after problems with the RAM when it turns out it had nothing to do with the RAM. I never would've thought it was the new wireless card I bought, or more specifically the old drivers that came with the CD. Found a post on some forum talking about how Ralink drivers from pre 2008 would wreck mayhem on computers running Windows 7 64 with dual channel. Really annoyed right now. Might try to install the new drivers, then reinstall the card, and see how things work.
I hate computers

There's the link if anyone wants it. That's very odd, to say the least ... I've never heard of anything like that.
Thanks for posting the solution, you learn something new every day (or so I'm told).

To answer a query you had, although it's not relevant to your current issue it may be useful in future, memory timings and voltages are all defined by your memory manufacturer. Each kit will have its own rated specs, and sometimes the motherboard just won't set them correctly. I'm not familiar with Asrock BIOS layouts, but memory settings are usually in an overclocking menu. The correct specifications will be in a format such as "1600MHz 9-9-9-24-2T 1.65V". This would mean the memory's speed would be 1600MHz, the first four memory timings (they are always listed first, but for reference they are CAS, tRCD, tRP and tRAS) are 9, 9, 9 and 28, the command rate is 2, and the voltage is 1.65V. They're just the recommended specifications, the RAM may work above (better than) those specs and will work at lower specs, but those are the guaranteed specs. It's worth setting those speeds and timings manually to avoid any possible issues.

Solve : USB Mult (Octapus)?

Answer»

My PC has 4 USB receptacles on the back PLUG panel. I have a keyboard and a mouse which instead of the old round plugs/SOCKETS (which I also have), are USB. Add a printer and a card reader, and now all 4 USB ports are used.

I have need for 1 or 2 additional USB ports. Is there such a thing as a USB Mult? ONE cable to a PC USB port and four additional sockets? If so, what do they call it? My searches of Tiger Direct and others have come up empty. I might have not used the correct terminology.

Thanks.http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=1&oq=usb+oct&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS304US305&q=usb+octopus+hubQuote from: schuarta on May 09, 2010, 11:55:12 AM

Called a USB hub.

As Allan has pointed you to there are copious types and quantities of these devices available. If my memory (sometimes shaky) serves me correctly it is possible to expand to something like 128 additional USB hubs. One item you might wish to consider depending on the hardware device that you intend to add to your new USB ports is whether to purchase a powered usb hub or a non powered one. Some devices will not have sufficient power if plugged into a non powered extension.truenorthThank you all! It's so much EASIER when you use the right terminology - HUB. I was beating (searching) away with MULT and MULTI and getting nowhere.

Also I couldn't spell OCTOPUS correctly.

So, what do you guys recommend, and how much would it cost?

Because I think Imma save up the money, and hand him the list of parts I need and have him add and upgrade my current PC, (the guy at the computer shop).

Please note that I dont have alot of money anymore, so the cheaper the better.

I do wanna be able to run GTA with default settings without it being slow, aswell as programs like MSN, and Ventrilo/Teamspeak, MODS, and other such things under it so I can pause and alt-tab my game and use those programs. No slowness or lag.

Any help would be appreciated cause I definatly want to upgrade my computer so I can play GTA:IV and make videos on it.

Preferbly if I would have one fast enough to use FRAPS without it being slow.Upgrade Suggested: Unfortunately, your Video Card does not meet this requirement

which means get a better graphics card....above the one stated for startersQuote from: lostcoast on May 09, 2010, 04:50:23 PM

Upgrade Suggested: Unfortunately, your Video Card does not meet this requirement

You obviously didn't read my post so I suggest to go back and reread to find what I was asking for or let it go and not come back to the thread.pricing varies with who you order from....find what you need and and order it..the game site tells you min specs, try to get better then min and look AROUND at diff sellers sites and find a good deal...newegg.com, tigerdirect.com any place that sells systems and parts. and as I said before...buy a better graphics card.

figure that program you ran tells you all you need to know...apply that info to buying better parts as needed.....sheesh

had you done your homework in the beginning you would not be in this predicament..The specs they listed I should have are their recommendations.

I wanna know what SPECIFIC other members of the computer think I should go with for upgrades that are at the cheapest cost.

The plan is to gather this and if It's cheap enough, I can pay this guy at the computer shop to order them and install them onto my computer. Then I just pay him for it all.

Oh, and dont assume that everyone that compes to a COMPUTER HELP forum knows things about computers.

PC without lag.
Is that a Paradox or an Oxymoron?

Here is a You Tube video that claims you can do it in a minute. That does not include the ...
three minutes he takes to bore you to death.
How To Get Rid Of Computer Lag I just dont want my game to lag if I have ventrilo and mods and maybe another program like msn or itunes running while I play.

Thats all I mean by it.you'll probably need an entirely new PC to run GTA4 at all.

recommended specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1GHz
RAM: 2 GB (Windows XP) 2.5 GB (Windows Vista)
Video: 512MB NVIDIA 8600+ / 512MB ATI 3870+

you have:

CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz
RAM: 1023.5 MB
Video: 6200FX

basically, in order to run GTA4 without "lag" you need a quad core machine with at least 2GB of RAM, and a video card less then 5 generations old. Your current system is underpowered for running GTA4, or any game in it's generation; In order to run GTA4 at all you will need an entirely new PC- the Quad core will need an entirely new motherboard, and so would the video card (PCI-E, whereas your current system is probably AGP) and it's fully possible that 1GB is where your current system maxes out.

On the other hand, you could run GTA3 just fine. Although I doubt that offers much reassurance. So I cant just upgrade my RAM and Video Card with a new processor and be fine?

I dont have alot of money and I just got this computer. So I want to play GTA IV in a way I can afford.A new processor will probably mean a new mother board.

May I ask why your "new" computer is a p4? Very old technology and will have problems running most new games above minimum settings. Because we only spent like $300 on it.

It's hard times and we couldn't afford much.

So the guy at the computer shop cut us a deal with a computer he already had, he just added more ram, the graphics card and some more hdd space.

We still cant afford much to be honest. Unfortunately while you can dress up a donkey to look like a race horse it is still a donkey. The best advice given thus far (though you probably don't kike it) is to buy another computer that meets (or better, exceeds the requirements) of the game you "must" have. You are only inviting more issues (and wasting your short supply of money) to start trying to upgrade what you have. For instance potentially from the upgrades noted (even if they could be achieved) you will probably need to upgrade the PSU. Which at this POINT isn't even in the list. The only other alternative that certainly will work is to wait until you can afford what you need and postpone your " ambitions" for the game you want.truenorth

Solve : HDD cable connection?

Answer»

Hello folks,

In another thread about wnidows OS, some fellow had made a
comment about connecting the HDD cable between the mobo and
the HDD:

Quote from: JJ 3000 on May 12, 2010, 08:35:42 PM

Make sure that the connector that's the furthest from the middle connector is plugged into the port on the motherboard. Make sure that the other end is plugged into the drive - not the middle connector. You'll notice a small notch on each connector that will let you make sure that you are plugging the cable into the drive the right way (not upside down).

MOTHERBOARD==============NONE=====DRIVE

Because I didn't want to change the thread topic, I didn't pose
my question there; but I would like to know the reason for the
importance of the choice of which connector head?

Thank you

zilooIt was the CD drive actually......

Anyway, the reason for the placement of the drive on a certain connector is that older, parallel ATA drives use a Master/Slave setting. The end connector is for the master and the middle is for the slave.

The most popular drive interface today is serial ATA (SATA) but a lot of motherboards still have one or more parallel ATA (PATA) controllers. This was the case in the thread that you are inquiring about. The original poster gave his motherboard's model and when I looked it up on the internet, I saw that it had a PATA controller. He had already stated that his hard drives were SATA so the optical drive was the only drive on the computer that used the PATA interface. I had to assume that, as the drive had previously worked that it was set as either cable select or master. So I asked him to make sure that the drive was plugged in properly. It was, so I can only assume that his problem lies with the drive itself or the controller on the motherboard.

But, to answer your question “What's the reason for the connectors”?
Well...
You see, way back in the bad old days of computing (1984), IBM introduced the first personal computer to include BIOS support for hard drives – the IBM PC AT. This new BIOS could support two physical hard drives that could be up to a whopping 504 MB each. At that time however, installing and configuring hard drives could be very tedious and difficult. So, five years later, Western Digital and Compaq came up with a brand new drive interface to address these problems which they submitted to the ANSI (American National STANDARDS Institute) committees. The ANSI committees put out the AT attachment (ATA) standard in March of '89.

The ATA standard specified a cable and a built-in controller on the drive. All modern hard drives have a controller on the drive. If you have one lying around pick it up and look. Do you see the circuit board on the bottom of the hard drives case? That's the controller. The controller lets the drive interface with (talk to) your motherboard. Before SATA most people referred to PATA drives as IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics). That circuit board that you see is the Integrated Electronics. The drive and the controller are integrated on a single package. Technically all hard drives are IDE (even drives that use other standards like SCSI) but most people only use the acronym when talking about ATA drives. But wait! Stop. Earlier I said that the problem poster's controller was on his motherboard. How can that be? What almost all computer techs refer to as the ATA controller is, in fact, just an interface that provides the connection to the REST of the computer. So, even though the real controller is on the hard drive the connection on the motherboard is called the controller. Don't ask me why.

Early ATA drives connected to the computer using parallel communication. That is: simultaneously sending data signals over several parallel channels (wires). The early PATA CABLES had forty wires inside of a flat ribbon cable and connected to the drive and controller using a forty pin plug.

The first ATA standard (there have been many revisions to the original standard over the years) defined that no more than two hard drives can connect to to a single IDE controller on one ribbon cable. Because two drives can be attached to a single cable you need a way to identify each drive on the cable. The ATA Standard identifies two separate drives as “master” and “slave”. You set the drives as master or slave using jumpers (small plastic shunts). If you look at the business end of a PATA hard drive you can see the jumper set on small pins that tell the drive's controller whether it is a master or slave. Later revisions to the original ATA standard improved on the original. ATA-2 added support for non-hard drive devices, like CD drives, and added support for a second controller so that you could have up to four drives as well as adding support for hard drives with larger capacities.(remember, the original standard was developed for the old BIOS that could only support drives up to 504 MB).

Now, let's skip up to the ATA-5 standard. Each revision had been improving on transfer speeds but with ATA-5 the data speeds were so fast that they had to define a new type of ribbon cable to handle those higher speeds. The new cable still had forty pins but it included an additional forty wires (eighty total) that acted as grounds to improve the cable's ability to handle those higher transfer speeds. Previous versions of the ATA standard didn't SPECIFY where the master, slave, or controller were plugged in but ATA-5 defined exactly where they had to be plugged in. They even defined colors. The connector that plugged into the controller was blue, the middle slave connector was gray, and the master connector was black. Almost all ATA-5 standard controllers (the ones on the motherboard) are colored blue also. This standard is also backwards compatible with older drives and controllers. You can plug an older drive into a one of the newer eighty wire cables and it will work just fine.

ATA-7 defined a completely new way to transmit data, Serial ATA. SATA does away with the entire master/slave concept. There is a point to point connection between the drive and motherboard. Also, with SATA there is no longer a maximum number of drives. SATA improved on a number of PATA's shortcomings. I'd explain more but I'm getting tired of typing. Post back if you want more info. Or you could check out the ANSI subcommittee that's responsible for the ATA standard at http://www.t13.org/You explanations were monumental !
GREAT job JJ... Thank you!

Now for a PATA setup......if I misplace the connector's end,
so that the shorter section of the cable is towards the
mobo connector, and the longer section is towards the
HDD or DVD drive, would it screw things up? Why?

zilooWhy would you want to do this ? ?Not knowing otherwise, I have probably done/misdone this
many times on my 486 machines and I haven't noticed any
difference! Should I be expecting something to happen !

40-conductor or 80-conductor cable? On a 486, it's likely ATA-"old". IDE was 33MHz, then 66MHz, then 100MHz, then, 133MHz. Faster speeds induce crosstalk between adjacent wires. 80-conductor places ground on every other wire. Connectors are still 40-pin.

I hope I don't sound too inquisitive , but if I had two drives

would be the consequences?

If they work without issues, there would be no consequences. Generally what happens is the motherboard controller can't figure out who is the Master and who is the Slave. If it sees 2 masters on 1 cable, the computer will crash. The HDD activity light will go solid red (or orange).

However, if it does work, I don't know how many 1's & 0's have to get scrambled before there are consequences.I guess what I don't quite understand is distinction
between master/slave by motherboard based on
their relative distance from motherboard on the
connecting cable ?

Motherboard================Slave=======Master

Motherboard=======Slave================Master

You see what I am trying to get at? Why should there be
such a big difference so as to cause a crash?

high speed data signals are crucially affected by cable length and microsecond delays in timing can destroy/impair performance.
You have heard the phrase: "timing is everything" ?
This is a perfect example of what that really means.
The details of signal propagation along a transmission line are far too complex to discuss here.Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 15, 2010, 04:31:53 PM

Exactly.

the relationship between the input signal, \displaystyle x(t), to output signal, \displaystyle y(t), of an LTI system is governed by:

Thank you all for your explanations .

If you connect the slave to the end connector and the master to the middle connector-

nothing will happen. the connection method is, pure and simple, a convention. (at least, pre ATA-133, I believe the 80-conductor cable and the various protocol and standards defined therein make it a bit more strict) neither drive can determine which connector it is in.

the actual controller on the motherboard (which, is an appropriate term, since we are dealing with multiple drives, each with their own controllers, something needs to manage the communication between the multiple devices and the single motherboard- thus the term controller, which coincidentally was also used for the add-on cards used in older PCs before on-board controllers were placed on the motherboard, you'd have an ISA card that would interface with your IDE drives. since it was in control of the I.O between all IDE devices and the motherboard the term Controller is nothing if not accurate.)

The key to knowing why you can connect either one in either spot (as long as you don't have multiples of each) is in the Jumpers.

When the computer powers on- it of course goes through it's post, where it checks everything. included in this check is the investigation of the ATA devices. the BIOS simply sends a ATA Identify command to the master, and then to the slave (each ATA command has a "channel" which defines wether it is to be accepted by the master or slave device- note that all messages sent from the motherboard to either device is received by both, so both the master and the slave receive two Ident commands. Wether the drives respond to the master or slave id commands depends on the jumper settings, which determines how the integrated electronics are to behave. (essentially, the jumper settings define a "channel" to use.)

if you have two drives jumpers to master, when the BIOS tries to identify the master drive, it receives two responses, since both drives have been set to the master "channel" (via the jumper settings). What happens depends on how the BIOS is configured to work with this- sometimes it detects whichever response arrives first- other times, it might even accept the second Master response as a response to it's later query for the slave drive configuration. Whatever the case, issues will result, especially as every single ATA command (including reads, writes, and so forth) are sent to both drives. Generally, because of differences in drive geometry, this quickly causes a hang. in practice, the most common result is the for the detection routine to hang, as the two responses are almost never contiguous, but rather "mixed together" so that the BIOS detection routine cannot properly parse it, so it waits forever for a "proper" response.

The same is true with two drives configured as slave/secondary.

With regard to using a cable "backwards"... you cannot plug it in backwards anyways. the connection for the motherboard on an ATA-133 (80-conductor) cable is keyed with a plugged hole so that it will only be able to plug into something that has no pin in that location, and drives generally have pins in all locations. For older cables that can be plugged in that way, it doesn't do anything. remember that regardless of wether you plug it in "forwards" or "backwards" the transmission length is the same.

The main, and deciding factor of why it's not done this way is simply because you cannot reach form the motherboard connection to one of the drives with the short length between the two end connectors.

Solve : What adaptor to run extended desktop with laptop.?

Answer»

I have used a monitor with my laptop before to used extended desktop. Now, I want to use my laptop with my desktop computer. It was easy with using the laptop because it has a vga out on the side of it. ...and the screen is attached. What adaptor do I buy to use the laptop (as a slave device?) to my computer? Are you talking about using a laptop as a second monitor on the desktop? If so then I'm not sure if it is possible. There is probably a way but it WOULD be very complex and NEED fancy software which I can't seem to find anywhere.Yea, use the laptop as second monitor. the laptop only has VGA out and USB PORTS and phone and internet ports. Unfortunately - I don't THINK that that is possible.

I'm in BIOS now. I don't see anything in regards to LBA. What SECTION would it be in?

Come on guys---It's not that the old laptop has any value to me, it's the information that I am learning from these fixes that I am gaining knowledge from.Just did a bunch of reading on the LBA. Don't seem to be an easy task to overcome or even if it can be done with this 3000.

Let me know what you all think. This is all just a learning thing for me.I have no idea what your bios options/menus are. There all different. If you've searched all the MAIN menus and SUB menus, and see nothing about LBA, and/or it's still not recognizing the whole drive, then the update did not include LBA support... Nothing you can do

1. You won't see anything in the BIOS regarding LBA. I'm pretty sure you're stuck at 8.4GB. Original HDD was no larger than 4GB, which was plenty for Win98.
2. I understand, you want to learn; just offering my experience. If something does go wrong with the flash, it's not like you've KILLED a new laptop.
I've got the Inspiron 7000, actually a Compal, (not Compaq) made for Quantex. Hardware is identical, but the BIOS DIFFERS. All Dells have customized BIOS. Bought it new in mid-1999, it's a Pentium II-333MHz. Your Inspiron 3000 is not a Pentium II, but a Pentium Mobile MMX-266MHz, or lower. I estimate your I-3000 to be 1998-99.
http://support.dell.com/support/systemsinfo/document.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&~file=/systems/ptwist/specs.htmI can live with what I have. I got it for free without a hard drive about 5 years ago. Works pretty good from. I might be able to pick up another laptop a bit newer from where my wife works. They change laptops all the time.

Thanks for being frank about all this stuff. I'm economically stressed (no job) at the moment and don't see anything coming up any time soon. So I have time on my hands to maybe check out and learn some things about computers.

GI was able to utilize all the space on the 20gb hard drive I installed on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop. I found this on AOL Discover. Just type on Zoom! How to speed up Windows.

In short it explains how to convert from a FAT32 system to the NTFS, New Technology File System that all new computers are using that have Windows XP and newer OS. Before I couldn't use any more than 7.2 GB on this 20GB hard drive. Once I converted to NTFS I can utilize the hole hard drive. Very simple to convert and is suppose to make the hard drive more RELIABLE, secure and faster.

Here is the manual for the computer I have been talking about changing the P2 in. If I am reading correctly, and I am sure someone here will tell me DIFFERENT, I can make the change to the 450MHZ P2. I'll have to read over the manual again to comprehend it all, but that is my take on compatibility.

Looks like it supports P-II processors up to 550Mhz (MAYBE faster, the diagram on page 3-4 labels some jumpers as "reserved for CPUs in the future".

Ok. I did a quick read of the manual again and if I read this correctly based on what P2 is used the jumpers need to be set for that processor. Am I understanding that right?

Leave jumper in auto position for 100MHZ FSB. You can also control this in the BIOS, p.4-5 Bootup System Speed, toggles between 100 & 66.

Since this one has the 440BX chipset and can be configured for either 66MHz or 100MHz. Look for a PII with FSB (Front Side Bus) of 100MHz. Multipliers are fixed, so 450MHz would be 4.5. The fastest PII is 450MHz, they never made a 550. They did make a PIII-400, that's where the overlap began.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_II
Clockrate: 266 - 450 MHz
* 66 MHz FSB : 266, 300, 333 MHz
* 100 MHz FSB: 350, 400, 450 MHz

It's possible that a PIII will function, too. They came in both 100MHz & 133MHz

Katmai: 100 MHz FSB: 450, 500, 550, 600 MHz

Here it is: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium-II/TYPE-Desktop%20Pentium%20II.html

JP100 sets the bus speed.
I suspect JP3 doesn't do anything, because bus multiplier is fixed inside the cpu.

I used it for a while until I got a 2nd one, different manuf & a 700 instead of 650. I overclock my 700 to 933 by increasing the bus speed to 133 from 100. I got an oversize fan for it and it's been stable for over 5 years. My Asus supports overclocking, your mobo does not.Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 14, 2010, 04:31:50 PM

Can we introduce our selves? I keep calling you Arnold to my wife because of your avatar...and I like to put a name to someone if I can't put a face. I'm a look in your eyes kind of person. I'm Gary, most of my friends call me "G".

I first would like to thank you. It seems (so far, except for the a little confusion earlier) you have a knack for helping and I'm an infant when it comes to computer hardware. I've been fooling around off and on with them since 95. I don't want to say I'm a novice, but I am NOT sceert to pull one apart to see what makes it tick. There are so many old ones floating around and I get to use my brain other than a sive (sp). Your help has enlightened me as has on my other occasions. With that said, here is what I found. I was checking out EPAY and posted some link. I you don't want to look that's fine, but I appreciate your input. I'm not learning anything if you don't. See below.

I read both LINKS. The psychowire looks like something I could do, but won't because I can't justify buying anything else in case other changes need to be made, and the second link, well lets just say I don't need to spend that much. Remember, I am economic stressed at the moment, but have prospects in the fire. Besides, my daughter says she'll buy a new one next year if I can't do anything with the one I'm currently trying to upgrade.

Solve : Can $330 Buy PC Desktop with great specs??

Answer» Can $330 Buy PC Desktop with great specs?
It is for eternal at home use
This is to be a Desktop, not a laptop.
It must be new, No use parts.
Exclude shipping and tax, but stay under $330.
Either Intel or AMD, Prefer 2 core 64 bit.
LCD screen.
Windows 7, any version. NOT TRIAL VERSION.
DVD burner required. Does not have to be blue ray.
Basic Ethernet required.
Video, Hard drive and Ram:
Whatever works great and within budget.

Any ideas welcome.

A titch (very technical term) over but lot's of stuff in it.

truenorthI do recommend the Athlon II CPUs - Very cheap and reasonable power (Only problem is no Level 3 Cache)

Personally, I have the Athlon II x4 620

Why not build it yourself? This is the best I could come up with for the price and you would have to build and use Ubuntu for an OS. Oh I didn't add a DVD that would be an extra $30.00

I agree it's an unusual amount. But, I guess a system could have 5GB. For example, if the computer had 4 memory slots, it could have 2 x 2GB plus 2 x 512MB, for a total of 5GB. Quote from: I Shooter on May 11, 2010, 12:37:56 PM

I can't confidently give an answer on that question. I'd LOOK at the specs shown on the adapters. What do they show in terms of watts, volts, etc.? You might be better off to just replace it if there's some doubt about using the other one you have there. You might try Amazon.com as a source; just use the search box on their site to search for it.

Note: I just saw patio's post. I'd heed his comments on this and replace it.Quote from: brotherskeeper74 on May 11, 2010, 02:17:18 PM

There are 4 factors to consider:
Volts, Amps, Polarity, Size of plug (inner and outer DIAMETER)
All must be compatible, not necessarily identical.

Solve : wireless usb modem?

Answer»

Just got new cellphones and US Cellular now has awireless usb modem which I have just hooked up to my laptop. What a difference between this and our old WILD Blue SATELLITE service. My question is the salesman told us we could hook up both our desktop and the laptop by CONNECTING the modem directly to the wireless router thru a usb port( if the router has one) My doesn't have one. Do I have to buy a new router? Or is there some alternative?he told you that you could directly connect to the router with a usb port? are you sure he didn't say ethernet? It sounds like the modem they are using for broadband doesn't use an RJ-45(ethernet) connection, but uses USB instead. It sounds like you will need a new router.
To confirm that you should call your ISP though. There are some routers with USB ports. It sounds like the salesman is suggesting that your USB modem be plugged into a USB port on the router and be used instead of a cable or DSL modem for internet access. Interesting concept.

I'd first check on your wireless plan for how you are charged for internet time. If you have got the wrong plan, it could cost you a lot of money for TWO computers and several cell phones.

If it does work, and I've got my doubts how well it would work, yes you need a new router.

Solve : is my computerscreen broken??

Answer»

Hello,

i have a belinea 22" flatscreen,
now recently it started flickering alle the TIME and then suddenly the screen WENT black!

everytime i turn my screen on i see my desktop and then its gone again

is there anyway to fix this or is my screen total loss?First, check to make sure that both connections are secure. One going into the monitor, one going into the computer. Make sure that they are tight! Most have screws that you can secure the connection well.

If that does not solve the problem, TRY a backup monitor if you have one. You may need to adjust some settings on the backup, however most of the time they will self adjust.

If it does NOT work on the backup, it could be a video card issue. If that is the case, then it is your video card (or on-board video) that is faulty, and that can have a whole set of different problems from software to hardware.

Let me know how it turns out!Mostly good ADVISE. However, you didn't say what kind of connection you have.

If you have a HDMI connection, they don't have screws and can come loose. If it's a HDMI CABLE just unplug each end and plug them back in.

Solve : OS Hard drive swapping?

Answer»

I have done some basic research on this idea already but am not entirely sure what I need to look for so I am hoping I can explain it and SEE if anyone has come across this setup or used this setup...

Basically I have an environment at work where we have about 6 core 2 duo processor machines, we recently came to the conclusion that we could dual boot the machines with a 32 bit OS or a 64 bit OS. As our conversion progressed we started talking about having a shelf full of hard drives that we can just move from computer to computer (Same model/hardware for each computer)

What we want to do is have 10+ hard drives for the 6 computers that can act as the boot drive OS installed the way we want. This way you can take any hard drive and move it to any computer. A different OS with a different Setup rather then having to USE a particular computer with a dual boot that would make the other boot option useless to another user. Make sense so far?

Ok I was looking at eSATA, I found a low profile PCI card I can install to each machine and was hoping to get an external cage/enclosure to house the hard drive. Most of the options I am finding though have more then 1 bay, are their any single bay options people know of? I don't need hot swappable, from what I have read it doesn't appear to be a great option for my needs anyway. In most cases the machine will be shutdown and the drive will be put back on the wall or something.

I want some sort of enclosure because I would like to avoid bending the cable that connects from the enclosure to the computer. I don't have the option to have the drive swappable from the front of the machine. The machine is low profile and the only thing that fits it he CD drive.

Any help is appreciated, thank you for taking your time to read this post. I think your group at work needs to re-think this. Why do you need 32 bit and 64 bit OS available for each user? And, if that's necessary, why not go the dual-boot route? I don't see the advantage here of using external hard drives which can be used for different OS. Indeed, I see that SCENARIO as being more hassle-prone than just using dual boot configurations.

And, if there's a need to frequently switch from 32 bit to 64 bit OS, or vice versa, I would be looking at setting up one of the OS as a VM (virtual machine). This would allow running two OS simultaneously on one computer. When you install Windows a unique hardware signature is generated, and the activation of Windows is tied to that signature. Shifting a hard drive from one computer to another would cancel the activation. Also, there would probably be some kind of licencing issue. Finally, I would be very surprised if you could get Windows to boot from an e-sata drive.

He did not say, but it would make sense for them to have it in their office environment. It would save money.

nothlit, we're waiting for a reply from you. Yep we have a corporate license. The goal here is to build a better testing environment. The machines are in a test environment we plan on using to test different products with different OS flavors before we release to clients so basically their is a good possibility all machines will be in use at the same time another reason to avoid the dual boot.

VM is a good option and we have used that but a lot of testing requires attaching scanners to do the product testing. And in the past even if we do get something to attach fully we end up creating additional problems.

A big part of the issue is that I'm in a group that is supposed to support a product, I am told it works by the developer and it doesn't really or hasn't been fully tested correctly. Plus live environments tend to generate real problems that the developer isn't always able to produce. Here's an eSATA enclosure that fits into a 5.25in drive bay.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817364015

As much as I would prefer an internal drive it won't work for the model of computer. The computer is smaller and the CD/DVD drive already takes up the space that that enclosure would, thus the need for an external solution.

Model of computers

Is this one better?

You will need an eSATA bracket or controller card to fit you model of computer. That looks better then the options I was finding. It looks like it will work with one of the PCI cards I found as well.

https://www.eio.com/p-17430-syba-sd-lp-pex1es-pci-express-sata-ii-raid-card.aspx

Thank you for all the replies and all the help.
After all this we started talking again. We are in an environment where in most cases we have ISO images anymore rather than the need for CD/DVD drive so we are thinking about pulling out all our CD drives and replacing them with a bay to do the hard drive swapping, if we then really have a need for CD drive we can use an external USB drive.

Any THOUGHTS suggestions on going this route? I think I can find the products I need but thought I would still ask here for input if anyone has two cents. Sorry for the time you took to look up external options Computer_CommandoQuote from: nothlit on May 12, 2010, 03:36:59 PM

That's exactly what I was going to suggest next. Corporate users have little need for a CD/DVD drive. Don't get any SFF computers in the future; they're just too much trouble to deal with. Time, I've got, no problem. I was never an IT guy, but worked with them all the time at several different jobs. Some things never change. At least you're considering all the options, before making a decision. Good luck!

Solve : toshiba won't load?

Quote from: gator on May 14, 2010, 09:49:35 AM

...I ran the WD hard drive diagnostics and it checked out as a "pass". I checked the Fujitsu HD using Seagate tools an it also checked "pass". What I am currently doing is erasing both drives (the Toshiba recovery disk is telling me 16:53:28 to complete) and will try to reinstall OS using the recovery disks from Toshiba. I also have some extra Kingston memory laying around and I will try that also. That's the latest............if I sound frustrated, I am not; I like the challenge...
When data gets corrupted on RAID-0, you're SOL. Drives are probably good, but the testing tools are not perfect. 16 HRS to "erase" drives seems excessive. You're right; the drives checked okay; the only thing I haven't done is to load NEW drivers for windows xp, or try a new copy of xp. I have been using the recovery disks that came with the laptop

FYI: when the system attempts to come up for the first time, is when I get the blue info screen with the loop back message; however it is only up for about 3-4 seconds. I did notice that if I LEAVE it running for a few more minutes, you can "faintly" hear the MUSIC that Microsoft uses as you set up your new system? no screen image though. If you have access to an XP CD i'd suggest this is the way to go...
DLoad all the appropiate drivers BEFOREHAND so your ready.

You won't have all the pre-installed bloatware on it after the install and the activation key will work as long as
A) The CD being used is an MS CD and
B) The machine has a legit Code sticker on it.

Solve : video card role?

Answer»

Can you please tell me-does videocard have any role in capturing, additing and burning dvds?Or it does have its role in playing on video display only. What it`s PURPOSE ?BASICALLY it renders images. So no, it wouldn't have ANYTHING to do with dvds. Unless you are converting the file you captured and the converter has gpu supportMost video cards integrate a DVD decoder on-board, usually the DRIVERS for the video card include the appropriate codec that uses the hardware, so any DVD ripping program or playback program will use the hardware codec to capture the DVD video.

It seems that my Corel Video Studio Pro X3 doing capturing and additing -OK, but when i want to burn DVD and BD with its burning software, o boy it so slow!Every step through takes forever! And to actually wright BD takes like 11-13 Hr.Yes,it CONVERTS but not that slow!I have HP 6250,but apgraded chip to Quad 9505,standard stock videocard.Do I need to upgrade videocard to speedup that video making process or it will not make any difference?upgrading videocard shouldn't have too much effect on the burning process, unless you are doing something that is graphic intensive.

burning dvd and bd are more of cpu, and perhaps also hard drive and burner drive dependent.

Faster CPU, better hard drive with decent read speeds and if burner drive can support a faster burn speed then you'll get a the burning done faster.

Solve : Black/blank screen. 3 beeps when turning on computer?

Answer»

This is probably a well known problem etc but I'll ask for help anyway. Any help is GLADLY appreciated.

I sent my laptop to Acer for not very long ago because the screen was BLURRY. So I've now got it back and it was working fine for a few days, but then yesterday the screen went black after a while. Have restarted it several TIMES. SOMETIMES the thing beeps three times, other times it doesn't. But the screen is always black.

What's wrong with it? Is there something I can do to fix this or should I send my computer back for repair again?
If your repairs are being covered under a warranty then definitely send it back. I would be PUSHING for a replacement rather than a repair given the previous problem.truenorth

Solve : Can you suggest a mid range video card to replace Radeon x600?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 9150 with 1.00GB of ram and a Pentium 4 cpu 3.00. It has a Radeon x600 graphics card and I would like to upgrade the card so as I will be able to play some of the newer games such as Fallout3. I'm told if I get a new card I would also need more memory as well but if it MEANS doing lots of technical stuff, I think I’d need to think about buying a new computer or forgetting about the games. I only occasionally play games so I don't want to pay a fortune for a card but I would like to play some of the newer games if that’s possible. If it's reasonably easy to fit a video card and perhaps some memory I think I could handle that because I looked at Tony's 'how to install a video card' but if it's more technical than that I would have to RECONSIDER. I would be grateful for any help. you do not need to have more memory (ram sticks) to USE your card. You have a radeon x600 graphics card. Do you care if you are using nvidia or ati graphics cards and what is your estimated budget you're willing to spend? Ya we need a budget. It also seems that you have a pcie X16 slot, so you should be good for all newer cards. Well, bedsides your power SUPPLY. If you get anything too power hungry your power supply will not be happy. Thanks for that. About £50.

Solve : Video card problem?

Answer»

hello,
i have a 9600 GT 512 MB video card and its been working up in tell 2 weeks ago. now when i play any game it gets all pixel-ed and locks my computer. i cant alt f4 or Ctrl Alt Del EVEN. Is that my video card causing the problem or is that something else. all the drivers are up to date....

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?Sku=V133-92200
above is the link to the barabone kit i bought which is my comp basicallyYour card may be overheating - Have a look and see if the fan is spinning and that it is free from dust.Get a new video card.

The 9600 is completely riddled with problems. I have a 9600 GT Superclocked from EVGA. With mine, my screen would go black, fan speeds up, and the computer is locked up.

It thought it was an overheating issues, I used 3rd party software to increase the fan speed, nothing helped. I RMA'd with EVGA, and the new one had the same problem. It was spontaneous when it would happen, different games would trigger it, some were completely fine.

9600 is trash. If you have the money, upgrade to a new one. I know the 9800 is pretty stable, and by now, it should be fairly CHEAP. Just a dissenting opinion...i have 2 of them that have had Zero issues...
Follow cameron's advice above.i checked the Video card temp with Speed fan and its overheating from where the SPECS showed it should be. i turned off the PC for a couple hours and tested it while it was cool and i still have the problem. i BELIEVE the video card may have been over heating and is now junk.Quote from: jblab on May 12, 2010, 06:33:57 PM

Statistically insignificant.

if a hamster chose Carrot A(organic) 8 times, and Carrot B 4 times in 12 tests, this is meaningless- Since the test is statistically insignificant. Most people would, assume that this means that the organic carrot is preferred by the hamster. It's not- in a statistically insignificant test, the results are determined more by chance them anything else.

The way you determine whether an A/B test shows a statistically significant difference is:

1. Define N as "the number of trials."
For the hamster carrot test this is 8+4 = 12.
For your video card debacle, this is 2+0=2
2. Define D as "half the difference between the 'winner' and the 'loser'."
For Hammy this is (8-4) ÷ 2 = 2.
for the Video card "test" this is (2-0) ÷ 2=1
3. The test result is statistically significant if D2 is bigger than N.
For Hammy, D2 is 4, which is not bigger than 12, so it is not significant.
for the Video card "test" D2 is 2, which is not bigger then 2, it is not significant.

human beings are notoriously bad at guessing these things from gut feel. For example, most people are more afraid of dying in a plane crash than a car crash, even though the latter is sixty times more likely. In your case, you had TWO cards. they both failed. out of a million, a test amount of 2 in an A/B test is statistically insignificant, and in fact, hilariously so. I could go on, but... meh.

In an interestingly similar experience, I had three nvidia cards before this one I'm using now (a 9800GT).

a 6200 FX would blue screen every time after installing drivers.
a GF-2MX would blue screen every time after installing drivers.
a 5500FX would blue screen every time after installing drivers.

however, unlike your case, I took the logical approach- given that I had four different cards that all failed to work, it seemed obvious that at least one of them was fine. Therefore, since none of them worked, it was fair to say that the cause was in fact, something else in my PC. the problem ended up being with my motherboard. it's called, Finding the common problem. having a single card fail on a PC can be the cards fault. RMA-ing that card and getting another defective card back is highly unlikely, so the problem is probably something else, not the card or how "riddled with problems it is"

looks like you were unfortunate sometimes you can get lucky and have a card overheat and still not have permanent damage (I came for help on this forum before in a similar situation, when my 5500FX started having problems- underclocking fixed it, but the problem ended up being that the fan wasn't spinning). You could try underclocking the card by a few mhz with RivaTuner, and see if that helps, at least until you are able to replace it.how old is this graphics card??get a graphics controller software from the manufactures siteThe card is a year old. i will try under clocking but i still think its junk cause i cant get any game to work.

my other PC has a 9800 GTX works great i might get another one for my 2nd PC

If the problem still occurs and the card is at a decent temperature - It it probably damaged.

Have you cleaned the fan/heatsink? Does the fan spin at a decent speed?

Solve : Components ready-computer won´t work?

Answer»

Hi!

I had this kind of HP Compaq (dc7100 SFF) computer:

I decided to upgrade it a little bit. I bought RELATIVELY new graphic card (ASUS HD 4670 1GB) and new power supply (Modecom Premium 500w). My old 400W power wouldnt fit to HP motherboard and i hoped that HP would have newer pins than my old power suplly. I was wrong, old and new power supply use standard ATX 24pin and HP has it´s own small 24pin cord.

So I bought "20pin to small 24pin" -adapter from Ebay. I plugged it to both ends but nothing happened. I tested adapter and electricity run normally trough adapter. Both ends fit perfectly so problem MUST be with order of cords in adapter. If I only could know amount of voltages in cords so that I could possibly change order of cords. My dad is electrician so he could help me out

Can anybody help me with any part of this problem??

Solve : Mouse movement problem.?

Answer»

I have a Logitech USB optical cordless mouse. Never had a problem with it. I got myself a new capture device, a Video Grabber with ShowBiz 2 software. When I run the program, it changes my 800 X 600 screen to 1024 x 768 and the mouse slows down dramatically. There is a distinct "delayed" reaction of several seconds and it is difficult to aim the damned thing.
I tried to capture with another program called VirtualDub. When I switch to the "capture mode" and the preview screen comes on, the mouse reaction is also slow, THOUGH better than the much bigger ShowBiz.
Is there some reason the mouse reaction slows so much with the video capture. I'm sure it must use a LOT of RESOURCES. Is there a way of changing the reaction TIME fot the better?

EspeciallyThe Dlink DNS-323 seems like a good choice for your requirements. If you did not need the device to function as a print server, the lower cost D-Link DNS-321 might be a good choice. See it here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822155009

Many printers are network-capable, meaning they can be connected to a router and shared over the network. This eliminates the need for a print server. I gather your printer is not network capable.Quote from: soybean on May 13, 2010, 09:55:49 AM

Solve : Canon i550 Printer - 7 amber flashes on indicator light?

Answer»

I have a CANON 1550 printer I bought in 2003. Until a week or so ago, it printed very well. I work at home and rarely print in color. Last week it wouldn't print in color at all. I'm sure this is related to non-use. So, I used the Cleaning program AND the Deep Cleaner with no results. But, today the printer woudln't print at all and there are 7 amber flsahes on the indicator light which, acording to the manual, means to check the print head. I took the head out and cleaned the contact and the residual ink on it. But, still no luck. The BLACK ink was running low so I replaced that cartridge but still NOTHING - the light keeps blinking. I called Canon and they want $10 just to GIVE me advice. I'm hoping someone on here has a solution. ThanksCan you get the printer to perform a self-test? Does it print under self-test?No it won't It's very possible that the printer died.nards01, While it may well be that the observation made by Quantos may be the reality there are a couple of things you can try 1st. On the current computer the printer is connected to you can remove the printer(disconnect) and also from add/remove programs remove the software. Then following the precise order reinstall the printer as REQUIRED from your printer manual. Another ALTERNATIVE if available is to install the printer on another computer to compare the result as to what it is now doing. If the result of doing both of these does not change anything then a fault in the mechanics of the printer is most probable necessitating a repair. Normally the cost of such repair is more than a REPLACEMENT printer would be and is not cost effective.truenorth

Solve : dead/stuck pixels along the same vertical line...?

Answer»

Hi, all. I'm currently running windows XP on my system. These are my current spec's.

AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core PROCESSOR 4400+
2.21 GHz, 4GB RAM
Geforce 7600 GT
ABIT AN8 32X motherboard
450 W Rosewill PSU

I just reformatted my hard drive. I reinstalled up-to-date drivers for my video card and all other hardware. However, I've noticed strings of dead/stuck pixels on dark backgrounds on my monitor. It normally starts right after bootup, only less uniformly. You can see larger red, green, and blue blocks (1-2mm) spread in various spots on the "press tab to enter CMOS" screen...and some on the windows loading screen.

In addition, once I'm connected to the internet, I will see single stuck/dead pixels against dark backgrounds. Once I scroll down with the wheel, they will form patterns of dots at even increments along the save VERTICAL line. When I scroll with the bar (in a smooth sliding motion), it will almost make completele lines of the colored pixel--almost like the single pixel is making imprints on the webpage. However, this never happens when I'm playing a game. All pixels seem to stay solid.

I'm trying to FIGURE out if this is a problem with my video card or with my monitor, so that I can correct it. I've clocked my video card, and the problem will occur, even when it's running at 55C.

Any ideas on possibly figuring out the culprit would be appreciated.Possibly a stuck or bad column in the display panel driver chip and/or circuit in the monitor. A test by substitution will identify whether it is the monitor or the video card.

under or over clocked?

Could have been overclocked to the extent that it cooked a chip, and now is FAULTY even at normal settings.

Solve : video problem?

On a computer I have Vista Business installed.....1.5 Gb ram, 256 Mb video memory (onboard)...........when I watch HULU MOVIES on it, while in full screen, the video freezes every 5 minutes or so....The sound continues, but the video freezes...I have to press teh ESC key to get back to default screen, then the video works fine, then I switch back to full screen then and it works for only another few minutes.....I've got DVMT mode enabled in the bios but that doesn't seem to help....I've also tried disabling AERO and using Classic View instead...no go there....Tried a different browser...no go there. There no viruses or spyware (I keep a pretty close check on the system).....No excess programs running in "start up"......

On another computer I have, with Windows XP, 512 MB ram, 64 MB video memory... I can watch HULU video just fine on that computer, in full screen...
................Is Vista just a hog or is there something else I can try on the Vista machine, before buying a video card?Have you tried reinstalling your DRIVERS for the video card?I'm pretty sure I tried that a while back....but just to be sure I'll try it again and see if it MAKES a difference..I went into Dev. Manager and before uninstalling (to reinstall), I THOUGHT I'd click on "update" really quick just to make sure I was using the latest driver......and what do you KNOW..I found a driver update!

I tested HULU after the update and it ran with out any interruptions..

I have a nasty habit of skipping over fundamental troubleshooting steps, believing that a lot of situations are unique..

All I can really say is................DOH !It happens to all of us sometimes. I guess...............thanks, sir
